Of course, the heart and soul of a writing app is its editor. And Ulysses is said to have the best text editor in the world. It offers everything you need – from markup to images and footnotes, from links to comments and code –, and it still manages to stay completely out of the way. It’s a beautiful and focused experience, which turns writing on mobile into *actual fun*.
But since Ulysses takes writing seriously, it does not stop at the editor. Its unified library offers unprecedented access to everything you’ll ever write, be it snippets and ideas, be it blog posts or manuscripts. Every text is at your fingertips, and Ulysses perfectly scales from scratchpad to diary to Great American Novels – and to everything in-between.

And once you’re finished, Ulysses transforms your text into beautiful PDFs, web pages, ebooks and Word documents. Love the app. My go to for writing and long projects. Would buy it again and again and even subscribe.
I love Ulysses, but it's lack of a way to create styles in iOS limits it's usefulness ... iPad is my main computer. Thought I'd found he perfect tool ... so close, so close ...
This is very well designed. I wish they would make a Windows version so I could sync to it. But the iPad version is so slick..,
Ulysses is definitely the best editor on App Store. Fast, stable, beautiful and elegant. Everything is designed perfectly and thoughtfully. Best ever.
Update: I use this program every day now and have most of my writing adventures on it. While I am no fan of markup and it would not bother me if Ulysses went to a traditional format, I enjoy how it is laid out and use it for most of my writing. I have several books I am working on in Ulysses and it is amazingly easy to switch back and forth between them. I love how it works on the IMac, the MacBook, the ipad, and the iPhone, as I constantly write on all of them. I love Ulysses on the Mac and Daedalus on the iPad. They work so nicely together. I had hoped this would be a sweet replacement for Daedalus. This hope was shot down. Ulysses on iPad does not sync with Ulysses on The Mac. Because I am rarely at home, I write more on the iPad. My Ulysses files are on Daedalus. Ulysses on iPad will not sync with this. I cried. Until the soulmen fix this bug, I cannot use it. I paid $20.00 for a program which is useless to me. I hope they read these critiques. I enjoy Ulysses on the Mac and use it for most of my writing. Now it just sits on the iPad. I found it. The key, or at least I think it is the one anyway, to make this work in its current state. I experimented with a stack in Daedalus, physically picking it up and dragging it into the icloud inbox where I dropped the stack. Now, suddenly, Ulysses works like a beauty with icloud and I am back on it again. Sweet. Am digging it.
Perfect score. Minimalist but everything you need. Intuitive and an absolute beauty. It is my absolute pleasure to spend time on this app on a daily basis. Well worth the money. I have tried the most obvious competitor, scrivener and I could not understand their syncing mechanism at all. Technology should reduce stress in our lives, not add to it. These two apps are polar oposites in that regard. This app utilizes iOS's own iCloud. Scrivener uses a third party app called Dropbox. This app reduces the need to even have to worry about pressing a "save" button because every single character is saved automatically for you as you type or edit. Having another third party software to do what iOS could very easily do is at the very core of the word redundancy. If you are a security minded individual, it should be stressed that apple's security track record is arguably one of the company's biggest selling points and at the tip of the spear for the whole industry. This app blows the competition's bloated, unintuitive and needlessly unaesthetic mess of an app out of the water. Good software is why we buy our machines. I can not more highly recommend this gem.
I use this app almost daily. I love the extended keyboard, the multiple themes, and the advanced export options. The only downside is that it spoils you for writing in any other app.
I love Ulysses. No other program works as well for exporting certain document forms, especially for making your own epubs. I do wish there was a way to prevent the popup footnotes though.
I used many other writing apps, IA, Bear, Scrivener, Day One, which are all great in their own way but for pure writing experience nothing beats Ulysses. And with the introduction of passcode lock this will be my only writing app.
Caveat, I use Dropbox as my back-end, perhaps iCloud would be more responsive.

Ulysses was made to perfectly integrate with the Apple Platform. It is optimized and enhanced to take advantage of the unique form factor of the iPhone, iPad and Mac (available as a separate purchase). And iCloud keeps all of these devices synced automatically. The big idea of Ulysses is that you can organize your complex ideas in a simple and powerful way. And best of all, the writing environment is beautifully designed and highly functional. You can also append/prepend text from Drafts app with customizable actions. This is a huge step forward and gives Ulysses incredible power to more efficiently capture your ideas. Ulysses is also incredibly well-supported by the developer, which makes it a great app to invest in for the long term. And the wonderful Backup feature gives you extra piece of mind for your most important work. Ulysses is truly the writing app of choice for serious writers working on the Apple Platform!
If you're reading this review, you're probably hesitating on buying yet another Markdown editor, or you're new to the concept. Either way, apps like Byword, iA Writer, etc might have, or can fail you simply because they don't have enough customization that can make the format better to work with while Ulysses does. To newcomers, I suggest a theme called No Tags that will make it read more like rich-text, and to others coming from other apps I say check out Greyhound, ToMASTER, and Prose Writer. The other thing I personally like about Ulysses is that they make the basic Markdown experience better by adding management tools like groups, filtering, and export options, and aren't trying to make it behave more like a rich-text editor like so many other applications now. They have great customer support too.
I love the design of this app. There are few things that would distract you from writing. I usually use this app to write essays and other homework. Crashes or other problems are also fixed very quickly in new version after being reported. The app definitely worths its cost.
I use this app every day. I use it for notes, blog posts, essays, projects, and my novel. This is a fantastic app. Sync with iCloud is awesome and with the Mac app I could not live without it anymore. Thank you for making the iOS app. Definitely worth any price.
It's iA Writer with more style and much better and easier organization. It has all of Scrivener's features without the learning curve, and pulls it off with way more style and grace (I have both, and have buyer's remorse with Scrivener). iCloud sync is perfect and more reliable than any other options; other apps don't even have this basic feature. Importing your own fonts, if you want them, takes but a tap (Bookerly ftw!), as does importing one of the many beautiful themes from Ulysses' website. Writing in this app is a dream come true. So much so that I've ditched my laptop entirely in favor of mobile, as I no longer need my MacBook. A $20 bluetooth keyboard in my backpack (Anker from Amazon. It's compact and types like a $400 mechanical keyboard!) and my 7 Plus in tow and I am now more mobile than ever.
It flawlessly connects and let you organize and work on your phone, tablet, and Mac. Yes, you have to buy it for iOS devices and for the Mac, but it will likely become your "go to" app for everything related to writing and note taking. It replaced 4 other apps for me, and I use it for everything - professional freelance writing, note taking in classes, even my grocery list! Support is amazing and responsive, this has turned into "the killer app" for me.
Now I can't even delete sheets. It just crashes hard.
Unreliable, buggy and crashes a lot on iOS 10
Very plain no-nonsense app for writing. No pretty backgrounds, just straight up writing tools. One thing for my wish list would being able to edit a style from within the iOS app. I can edit printing styles on the Mac, but unable to edit the same style on the iPad.
