Dargon quest/10. >The game is locked in Portrait mode, the same as DQ8. Again, while I'd like the option I enjoy Portrait greatly. It makes it much easier for me to play with one hand, especially on my phone. >Controls feel a little more cramped on this over 4. I find myself opening the menu by accident just a little to much, especially on my phone. >While many (Including myself) found DQ8 more enjoyable on my phone, I feel 4 is better on the iPad. Everything feels very cramped on the phone, and I feel the game looks better on the iPad to. The backgrounds in battle look noticeably better on the iPad.

Update for iPhone X. please update this game for iPhone X users so that it’s full screen! Thanks.

One of the best in the series. This is the best version of the DQIV remakes. It looks beautiful and since it originally ran "full-screen" (i.e. using both screens) on the Nintendo DS, it is perfectly suited for portrait mode. It's like joining the two screens together and upgrading the speed and resolution. It is a little weird playing with a touchscreen, but you can play it one-handed on your phone, and it's beautiful on iPad. DQIV was a revolution at the time, adding characters with personalities and a chapter structure. This game is a real joy to play.

Love it! But one question. Great job, but Why no landscape mode? I noticed the same thing with DQ8. Thanks!

Great game. Terrible dialog. This is my favorite dragon warrior game of all time only updated. Overall the changes are great and make the game more playable without losing any of the charm. But the dialog completely ruins the experience. In an attempt to ethnicize the kingdoms, the dialog was rendered near unreadable with phonic spellings of various cliche accents. It is so heavy handed as to be offensive, especially the broken Asian English that another reviewer mistook for an unintentional bad translation from the original. Imagine watching a foreign film but to covey that it is foreign the subtitles are purposefully in broken English and spelled with accents.... Not necessary. Not fun. Fix it square

Dragon Quest IV. Always loved this game and when I saw they had it up here I bought it immediately. So very happy. Just one bad thing. It got delete off my iPhone 5 and now when I go to re download it, it says that the item I'm trying to buy is no longer available. Can anyone help??? 😢

Great port, but iPad battle scenes partially obscured. A gorgeous port of the Nintendo DS version. This is a classic, grind-heavy RPG with a great story and memorable characters. The battles have animated monsters, unlike some of the preceding Dragon Quest iOS ports. Be aware - if you play the game on an iPad instead of an iPhone, the battle window may cover most of the battle scene, partially obscuring the enemies. Aside from that, enjoy the beautiful graphics, music and stories! Cheers!

Best iOS Game. Just beat it! It took about 35 hours for me. I love this game!! Anyone complaining about the price needs to realize this is a PLATFORM GAME, not some little iphone game. Remember when we paid $50 for a new N64 game? It's like that, but cheaper, and with the convenience of playing from your iphone. 5 stars!

Cloud sync does not work. The game is fine, but the cloud saves do not work, so you’re stuck playing on one device if you own multiple apple products.

Perfection!!. Works perfect on my Iphone6 Plus! I remembered this game on my friend's Super Famicom. Really happy I'm able to play this game even after 15+ years later! Put in around 20 hrs and so far it's been great! Autosave and Cloud Save are both great adds! With Cloud Save I'm able to switch between my iPad and iPhone seamlessly! This is how all FF and DragonQuests should port from now on!!

Great game! Need option to mute *all* sound. Great game, but the grinding is made almost unbearable since you can’t mute the sound (without turning your volume all the way down), which also means you can’t use your own music (Pandora/Spotify in the background). Super annoying. Many times I sit down to play but give up cause I just want some music playing at the same time. Fix that super frustrating option and I’d give at least a 4 star.

I don’t care about your music or SFX. Stop forcing me to listen to your stupid in game music and sfx. There is zero purpose for you to force my other audio apps to shutdown when I open this app. I played DQ1-3 for hundreds of hours listening to audible and loved it. But now I CHOOSE to not to open DQ4 simply because my audiobook stops the moment I open DQ4. Please fix this.

Cloud Save Doesn’t Work. BROKEN! DON’T BUY! CLOUD SAVE BROKEN! I’m unable to synchronize cloud saves on my iPhone 12. I shouldn’t have to start the game over because I got a new phone. I just want to redownload my old save. I’ve tried multiple networks, multiple times of the day, and tried reinstalling. Nothing works!

Great title great port. Game looks awesome on iPhone and I rather like the portrait only mode Bc you can play with one hand no problem. Wish the FF titles kept the graphics and not update those ugly new character models. This game keeps the graphics from ds and it looks great. The actual game is awesome and cool story. It's a perfect mobile title and hope they release the other DQ DS remakes!!!! Keep them coming!!

Benifaction. ...My life is officially complete. That's the phrase that keeps coming to mind every since I've conquered one of the greatest video games of ALL TIME!!!!!! ENTER DRAGON QUEST 4‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ again I would like to start of my review by stating that I have been on a journey to purchase, play, and beat all of the DQ titles available on the App Store, as I've done months back with the Final Fantasy series. The unfortunate thing though about writing all of these reviews, especially when each installment is better that the last, is the simple fact that it becomes nearly impossible at this point to adequately portray the awe-inspiring majesty of each game I review, and I don't think there's a single game that I have ever reviewed in my entire life that I would like to adequately portray said majesty more than the almighty Dragon Quest. Where does one begin when trying to review a game of this magnitude? Well I guess I would have to start by talking about the sheer goose bump-inducing orchestration. Dragon Quest 4, without a shadow of a doubt has some of the very best music I have E-V-E-R come across in any RPG...EVER!!! For instance the music that plays when you sail around in the boat would send such monstrously jovial shivers down my spine every single time I heard it, and if I just happened to be playing with headphones whenever I boarded ship, FUGGEHDUHBOUDIT!! Another mind blowing aspect of the game are the incredibly diverse and wonderfully ethnic dialogue. The writing for this game is over-the-top fantastic that you can almost audibly hear the words in your head. The programmers achieve this feat by adding many different dialects and English translations from many areas across the world, from France to Scotland to Italy to England and so on. By writing out the words in English as it would sound with that foreign accent is just something that needs to be experienced, and it's certainly something I've never seen before I've started playing Dragon Quest. For instance the French people would always say "ze" when they mean "the" and the British sounding natives would say things like "roit" when they mean "right". These are just a few of the thousands of examples but you get my drift. They even went as far as giving the Italian sounding natives horrible English grammar like "I am for having trouble. Can you be helpful of me" it's these subtle yet striking nuances that really make the game stand out. Many people think it's just bad Japanese to English translation, but it's obviously intended for there are many NPC's in the game that speak perfect English. Again, even saying all of these things could never truly justify how perfect this game really is. I am very new to the DQ series so a lot of these things are pretty fresh to me considering this is a completely different monster than Final Fantasy. Speaking of monsters, after you've spent a hard day obliterating a pack orcs or cute squishy slimes, you can sit back and enjoy a quick game of DQ poker, or even a couple go'rounds at a slot machine, maybe even place a few bets on the monster arena, all located at the casino!! My point is, for those that aren't too particularly keen on grinding till your ears bleed (I for one love to grind😋), there are a myriad of different mini games and side quests to keep you busy through the roughly 40 hour campaign...which brings me to the story. DQ4's storyline is FAR superior to the previous games. Where Dragon Quest 3's story only became really really interesting and critically important in the last ten or so hours of gameplay, DQ4 has a deeply structured, perfectly written, and wonderfully unique story line all of its own. Comprising of 5 main chapters, you play a unique short quest for the first 4 chapters of the game, playing as all of the main characters you'll eventually meet back up with in chapter 5. It's a lot like FF4:The After Years, in a sense that all of the character's stories intertwine with one another to make a story so very intimate and engaging from beginning to end. Speaking of the end, all I am going to say is that the very moment right before the credits started to roll, was one of the most intensely heartwarming and tearjerking moments I've ever seen...just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. On top of everything else you even got an extra chapter to unlock once you beat the game to keep you occupied for a little bit longer...and don't even get me started on the fantabulous graphics, mainly the enemy animations. Each and every enemy in the game have downright gorgeous animations along with nifty camera play, it really draws you into each battle like never before. Which brings me to the final boss. While I think I had a much tougher time with DQ2&3's final boss, (mostly because I went grinding like crazy in this game so I was pretty well prepared...liquid metal slimes yo!) the final fight in this game is something you have to see to believe. With many different forms and the aforementioned jaw-dropping animations. It was one of the most punishingly brutal, and visually astonishing boss battles I've ever experienced and won't soon forget. Well there you have it. Another long review for a game that truly deserve all the praise you can throw at it, and that's what I try to do every time I write one of these reviews. Although I do love this game very very much...I've been seriously looking forward to the next installment in the series and have no doubt in my mind that it will be even better...Next stop, DRAGON QUEST 5‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Not The Reboot You Want. There was so much potential in this iOS release as Dragon Quest IV is probably one of the finest in the series. When it originally came out, it was part of Enix's A-list RPGs. This release however, does not do justice to the franchise or the game. I've seen other review praise the new translations, particularly the "ethnic" anglicizations of the different regions. This detracts so much from the story however, as it causes you to stop and dissect each sentence like a poor-man's woolseyism. It's poor translation on the scale of "All your base are belong to us now". Weird word usage that doesn't belong, such as "Your extinct mother..." Instead of saying "Your dead mother." It's truly atrocious. The name changes are also unusual. It detracts less than the ethnic translations but it seems pointless. Why change names? These are established characters. It would be one thing if the hardware limited the original game's naming system, but often that wasn't the case. Changing Taloon (6 letters) to his first name Torneko (7 letters) perhaps might have made sense. But Nara and Mara COULD have been named their reworked names, Maya and Meena, but they weren't. So why change back? I don't buy the argument that Mara and Nara are confusing, because Maya and Meena don't make it clearer. I think the worst offender is renaming Cristo, to Kiryl or something dumb like that. The item and monster name changes are seemingly pointless as well. Some of them are genuinely worse than the original names. Happily, some of these weren't changed. The game's one improvement is the graphics. It does look better than its 8-bit source material. And I think they stayed fairly true to most of the character designs. I will give the artists a star for that. They've also cut some of the grinding out which is good as well. But the UI for spells is atrocious to navigate on mobile and the control pad is so loose and wonky. The number of times I've walked around something instead of over it because the control pad is so loose was disappointing. I fee this has to do with the 8-direction pad replacing the 4-direction control. The "3D" aspect also seems pointless in all but two or three spots through the whole game. Makes me think they could have just changed the view in these specific areas and saved the hassle of having the 3D "camera" at all. It's playable to someone who has played the original and remembers the story and character and spells and can easily refresh their memory. It's not preferable to the original though and for people new to the game, it can be confusing. I wouldn't recommend this as a first time play-through. Just play the NES if you can.

Great game!. I love the DQ series. I'm hoping that the release of 8 and 4 means that more are coming to the App Store. I know many complain about the lack of landscape, but especially in 4, the control actually makes sense. The game this was ported from was on DS. The screens were used together to show more, and the picture in portrait mode mirrors that. As someone else said, sometimes it's easy to accidentally go into the menu, but otherwise I think the control is perfect. Keep it up SE!

No difficulty.. Good game but I can only rate these 4 stars due to lack of difficulty. There is none. Great story and plenty to do but I wish there was a difficulty setting because there is no way to lose a battle. Without a challenge I just dread getting into battles because they just seem to be time wasters. Maybe eventually they will add harder difficulty options but until then 4* is all I can rate. Once again not a bad game I love this series but even the originals are way too easy. Feels like a beginners or an rpg geared to kids as an intro to rpgs.

Great game. 30+ hours of fun. The dialogue isn’t the result of “poor translation”. It’s simply an artistic effect to give the different regions different accents. I think it’s cute and not at all difficult to understand.

Great game. Only on Chapter 2 so far and enjoying it lots. Nice leveling mechanics, well-made interface, charming characters, and finding the right strategies to pull off combat with different enemies is satisfying. Love it so far!

Translation terrible. I’m a huge fan of the dragon warrior dragon quest series. Played the originals when I was a wee lad. Loved them, I was excited to replay on the iOS. 1 2 and 3 were amazing. But this translation is so terrible. Some of the words are not even words. If this is your first dragon quest game I’d skip this and play dragon quest three instead.

Game is good but does not sync to iCloud. Game is a direct port of the DS version but if you want to use it across devices with an iPhone and iPad good luck. Does not download saves from the cloud unlike other games I’ve played so.

Oh dear god. The iOS versions of 1-3 were improvements in my opinion, particularly 2 and 3. Not so on 4. The gameplay and graphics are wonky and the translation is HORRIBLE. Really, really bad. To the point where I take screenshots of the dialogue because it’s so terrible that it is hilarious. Still enjoyable, but holy god you can tell they put far less effort into this port than they did for the incredibly simple DW1.

iCloud save doesn’t work. Fun game but it is not full functional. iCloud saves does not work in ios 15.2

Honest Review. I am a huge fan of the Dragon Quest series and have been for years. This was the first game I played as a kid and I still love it. The iOS port version is just as incredible as the ds version, plus all the added content. I feel that the chat option really immerses you in the game and gives you a better feel for the view if the characters. I believe the controls are very easy to get used to and that the combat and graphics are quite outstanding. The game was worth every penny.

Drag anywhere on screen to move. Need to add the feature of drag anywhere on screen to move.

Keep them coming!. I am infatuated with the franchise and have been since playing Dragon Warrior NES when I was 5. Fans of the series and JRPG fans in general definitely need to pick this up. It plays wonderfully in portrait mode so I don't even miss landscape. This also plays a lot smoother than DQ8. (Which is still amazing) Dragon Quest games are not the easiest RPGs out there so prepare for a bit of grinding and open exploration. Make sure you speak to everyone, pay attention, and save often. But the added quick save feature makes the game just as playable in short bursts. Back in the day if you didn't have enough time to venture out and make it back to the church/king you might as well not even turned it on. Highly recommended.

Marred by technical problems and interface issues.. My understanding is that the game itself is quite good. Sadly, it is hidden behind an imprecise and uncomfortable interface (seriously, iPad players prepare for thumb discomfort) with no controller support, and a cloud sync feature that never actually works. No escape to the iPhone version for these poor despairing thumbs.

The definitive version!. I clearly remember this game on the NES and I always thought it was an amazing game for its content! I was so disappointed in the PSX port that wasn't, and I was stationed in Japan when this was made into a Nintendo DS game, which is what made me buy my first DS and this game even though I couldn't read Japanese anywhere near fluently. Then it was released stateside but conspicuously missing party chat! I was so heart broken, but past transgressions are forgiven with this release! Initially I was a bit thrown off by portrait mode but it's not nearly as off putting as I anticipated. Worth every dollar, and a must buy for role playing fans.

Great. Loved this game when it first came out for the NES, and it has stood up remarkably well. Great update, sprites could use some smoothing, but music is great. I actually like the controls, despite the complainers. I do play on the iPad mini mostly though. If you like classic JRPGs you won't be disappointed.

Keeps me up at night!. This game is addicting. I played DQ1 when I was a kid. Came free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. This game is a whole lot better. It's very long, took me awhile to beat. Very interesting story. I liked how there were different story lines for each characters, then merged them all together. Grinding was easy with the AI selection. I just control one character and the others just Attack. I was usually half asleep while grinding. Worth every penny. On to the next one.

Better than the original!. It's always been a great game. Some character names changed slightly, but no biggie. Unlike the original version, you can control all of the characters instead of just setting their AI. It's been great replaying one of my all time favorites!

I love DQ. Playing DQ on mobile is very nice. DQ 6 up next‼️

Dragon Quest IV. Let me start by saying that I was skeptical about buying a game $15 and that was made for the DS. But, it's the game that influenced me. Dragon Quest has amazing games and is a true gem franchise. DQ IV is one the best in my opinion. My favorite is VIII. A good reason to buy this game, this is the best and cheapest option to buy this game. I'm pretty sure if a lot of people buy these games (This and the iOS port of VIII) then we will be seeing more releases and hopefully localizations! This game is phenomenal and the controls you get used too in a few minutes. Enjoy one of THE BEST games of all time :)

Japanese translation. I want you to introduce a Japanese translation

iPhone X update!. Thank you for updating this and DQVI! I’m now going to greatly consider buying V and VI!

GREAT but..... I love the dragon quest games and this one, I remember playing as a kid. Overall great game except for the translation of the in game text from NPCs. I appreciate the subtle dialect and even the "accents" that are written down. But what's with all the poorly translated dialog for the Alena chapter?! It makes reading a pain and almost reflects poorly on Square Enix's prestigious reputation. It almost feels like they hired a bunch of middle school Japanese kids to translate the game by only using google translator. Please fix this issue, because paying 15$ for a remade game (that I feel had a better translation team for the original NES version) and getting poor quality translation feels almost insulting especially considering that I can't request a refund, which I would request because of this issue. Thank you.

One of the best. My family and I first played DW4 on the Nintendo entertainment system (NES) many years ago. Back then it was a ground breaking game with new gameplay systems and character development. The iOS version is a great improvement over the original, and will be a enjoyable experience for anyone that likes JRPGs.

Great game; great controls. Yes, I was hesitant about laying down 15 bucks on an iOS version of a classic RPG because of all the things I'd heard about the control scheme. Ultimately, I decided to buy it, and have NO regrets doing so. Portrait, one-handed control = awesome. I can eat a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and grind on DQIV at the same time. What else could you ask for?

Dragon Quest’s Shining Moment. Let me begin by saying that Dragon Warrior IV on NES was and still is my favorite video game of all time. This port is a modified version of the Nintendo DS remake, so it accessible and fun, but not quite as challenging as the original from 1992 (US.) I love this game, but putting nostalgia aside, it shines on mobile devices because the general turn-based JRPGs of the past translate well to touch screens. ENIX had the complex story figured out by the time they got to this 4th installment and it really shows, giving players a fun, but not too heavy adventure with multiple characters that are easy to fall in love with. Get this game.

Awful translation. I originally played this on the NES. This is much worse. To add dialect and accent, they translated the Japanese to a language (such as Russian) and then translated THAT to English. So there are several idiosyncrasies that just fail, to the point of distracting from the charm of the game. I essentially bought this for Taloon’s chapter, but it just didn’t scratch that nostalgia itch due to the awful translation.

Unable installation. I purchased it but couldn't install this game. :( I can't play it please fix it

From the past to now. Despite, in my opinion, having a weaker story to V, its still the same old Dq I love, this port takes the Ds remake and makes it even easier to access!

Great Game, Cloud Saves Don’t Work. Square Enix wants to charge a premium price yet will only provide trash mobile support. The game’s cloud save function no longer works, so you’re stuck playing the game on the device you started on. Apple has expanded controller support, yet Square Enix Dragon Quest games do not support them. Not only that, but these games can only be played in portrait view. Making it awkward playing these games on larger phones or tablets, or even with your device connected to a tv. So Squeenix, either stop the premium price grab, or start providing a game experience that justifies the price. Because right now it’s almost just another mobile trash game.

Controller support. Please add controller support.

Love it. This game is waaaay too convenient when it comes to long trips or free times, especially since you don’t need an internet connection to play

Thanks for bringing DQ back. And one more thing. Could we have a bundle of DQ series?

Great game! Excellent port!. This is the third time I have owned this game and played through it! Not to mention that it is a very fun game with a good story and neat characters, but the port to iOS is wonderful! I love the Cloud Save function that works between my iPad and iPhone so I can play anywhere. I don't necessarily like that I have to manually click "Cloud Save" in order to sync with the cloud, but it's a minor inconvenience at best. Great job SquareEnix! Please do as good a job with DQV and DQVI if and when you port them! Those were great games when I played them on the DS and I look forward to them again on iOS!

excellent game, excellent port, but it kills background audio. Loving playing this but I wish I could listen to podcasts while I play like with DQ1-3

Players read. People try to make fun or complain about the translation. They’re too stupid to realize that the developers were trying to give the characters accents.... so sad. Wonderful game. Takes me back, and I appreciate the effort

The definitive version. Not only is this a great port based on the Nintendo DS remake, but it also features party chat which gives more depth to the characters and their relationship between each other. However, the UI is no longer located at the very bottom of the screen, which is very annoying. The bottom part of the battle menu blocks some of the beautiful artwork of the monster background, while the general map UI separates a small section of the bottom background from the rest. This issue is also present in the other DQ games. I’m playing on an iPhone SE (2020) for reference. Btw I like to address some of the negative reviews even though they’re several years old: - First, no versions of this game ever had voice acting, so to complain about the lack of VA is silly when the game never had it. - And second, there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes in the translation. They are actually dialects that are intentionally placed to give different accents to characters since this is a big world consisting of more than one human race. Sure they are hard to read & understand sometimes, but you’ll get used to it eventually.

Poor localisation hinders game.. I haven't play the original DQ4 game, but this game is fairly solid and enjoyable. The biggest problem is the language conversion. There are significant grammatical errors and spelling errors which makes understanding the game challenging. This made an impact to me as I cared less about the characters and story and just focussed on playing the game to finish it.

Dragon Quest iv Chapters of the chosen. Fantastic game,no bug in pioneer town

Well worth the purchase. A classic

One of my fav. I'm a big RPG freak and this was one of my favourites, I played this over and over on Nintendo Famicom when I was 10 years old and that was 22 years ago! There were no English versions then but I managed to finish the game 100% after playing over and over lol good call on making this game available now and with enhanced graphics. Just bought the game and read comment about a bug in a town. Well I hope it is fixed by the time I get to it. Keep making more old games available please, DQ 1,2,3, Dragon Warrior so on and so on. Thanks so much.

Love this game. DQ4 is better than DQ5

Sub Par. Voice acting? Bad graphics poor sound quality. So far only just started. Had problems figuring out the dialogue it's the middle button. The graphics on ipad really are outdated and don't serve the game well at all not these days. I'll give the game more points if its really good but at the moment for graphics and sound both poor quality I can only give it at most a one & not really recommend it yet. Battle is played out in a small window on the ipad. You've got to be kidding. ZERO points for this. Do not buy for ipad. You will be very disappointed. Controls not that good either. Keep entering and exiting wrong doors because of bad controls. Also no voice acting slices a lot of goodness out of this game.

Brilliant. The definitive version of an amazing game :)

Good Timing!!. I'm just finished my dragon quest 8 1 week ago,and i get another one now. Love this series so much.

Auto save needs to be fixed. I only get a few minutes on my phone at a time and it's really annoying how bad the auto save is. If I beat a boss, the game should auto save. If the stay at an inn the game should auto save.

Wonderful console styled rpg!. As somebody who missed the DS releases of the games, I'm really glad these ports are handled so well! -Great use of cloud save to transfer saves from iPad to iPhone. -music loops unfortunately start over after battles. -weird layout of the battle scene on my iPad, text lays over the battle scene. -great classic dragon quest adventure! Can't wait for more games, I hope they do DQIX TOO

Amazing Game; Broken Cloud Save System. I absolutely adore this game, and I would love nothing more than to give this game a 5 star rating. However, the current cloud saving system is largely broken. My iPhone 12 Pro is able to upload my current save data to the cloud no problem, however the server fails to retrieve and synchronize that data when I try to download it to my 10.5” iPad Pro. This was present on both iOS (and iPad OS) 14 & 15. Will update my review once this has been fixed.

Great game but cloud saving failed!. It’s an amazing game. If you like RPG, that’s a must have game. Everything’s just right on point in that game. The story’s nothing too special, but it makes the job very well. This game offer a lot of future replayability, because the story’s not too thick, and you don’t get interrupted all the time with useless dialogues boxes. DOWNSIDE: It support cloud saving ONCE, after that, I was never able to synchronize my saved data on my second device, no matters how hard I tried. Therefore, make sure you play this game on your best device right from the start. I keep receiving this message all the time: «Data not found»

The definitive way to play!. Usually with mobile releases of games you expect things to be worse than they were on the original console, but this is absolutely the best way to play DQ4, in English at least. It takes the very solid DS remake and improves upon it by translating and implementing the party chat feature that was originally left out of international releases. If you've never played DQ4 then you should know it's a great game, easily a couple dozen hours of gameplay, charming characters, fantastic monster design, and while maybe not the most original story a nonetheless fun tale of saving the world.

Got it :). I just know it's gonna be a good game. So 5 stars. :)

Great game!. This is a good port on a great game! Had some issues with the control like missing a stair once in a while and coming back into a well when entering it but even this won’t prevent me from rating this game 5 stars!!

Great classic game. This is a remake of Dragon Warrior 4 for the 8 bit Nintendo with differences. I have been waiting for square-enix to release this. I highly recommend this game especially if your into Classic RPGs like final fantasy. I would gladly pay 4 times as much to DL this game. Have fun playing

BUY THIS!!!. Dragon Quest is amazing! I hope they release more games in North America. Please release DQ7 3DS in North America!!!!!

Great. This game is awesome I just wish square enix would release the other dragon quest games. It seems like they ignore the dragon quest fans for final fantasy games which have gone downhill.

Just the English release we were hoping for long ago!. Finally! This seems to be the very English translation release that fans were hoping for that was advertised years ago. See this game was released originally for the NES in both Japan and NA in both languages. However years later it was eventually ported and updated for more modern Playstation console, just not in English. Though an English port on the Nintendo DS was released about 7 years ago. This seems to be that version but with a brand new all touch interface. First Dragon Quest story that didn’t follow some generation of the “Erdrick” legacy. This one is my personal favourites and probably the biggest RPG ever released on the origin NES in NA.

Excellent port of a classic. Dragon Quest 4 is a fun, challenging JRPG. The story is a little dated, but it's still passably entertaining. It can be a tad grindy, which is standard for DQ games. You can probably finish it in around 30 hours. A lot of older RPGs that have been ported to iPhones have controls that range from serviceable to full-on misery, but DQIV's is actually pleasant and responsive. The graphics in the game have been given a nice facelift, and the environments are in 3D now (With a rotating camera, like in DQ7). The difficulty in the game can spike pretty brutally at times, but fortunately by the time that starts occurring you're free to explore most of the world, so you can always explore, level up, and return to tackle that tough boss later. You have the ability to swap characters in & out of your party as well (sometimes in mid fight), so sometimes changing up your group can help you beat the rougher encounters. It's a pricier app, but worth it if you're into NES/SNES RPGs.

Great game!. Enjoyable nostalgic adventure! Great story thus far. I hope Square releases the other dragon quests over to N/A. Update 10 hours into the game it's a lot of fun and great adventure!

Amazing port but... I want landscape, only reason it's not five stars.

Great game. Can't wait for 5 and 6

One of the best!!!!. I played the original Dragon Warrior IV for NES but never finished it..and to find out this game came out for iPhone just made my day and love how they made it so user friendly!! Thank You SE for making this available on phone! PLEASE BRING Dragon Warrior I,II,II game apps!!

Dragon Quest IV. Always loved this game and when I saw they had it up here I bought it immediately. So very happy. Just one bad thing. It got delete off my iPhone 5 and now when I go to re download it, it says that the item I'm trying to buy is no longer available. Can anyone help??? 😢

Fantastic. Fantastic game but just one question, I noticed so many spelling errors and grammar errors. I'm just curious was this done purposely?

Amazing. Only 1 glitch (with DS version too)--- Kabuff increases all members DEF by 100%--- it's supposed to be 50 (25 DQ 5 and later) this makes the game too easy after you learn the ability.

One of my new favorites!!!!. Hands down one of my new favorite dragon quest games so far! I so far boughten 1-4 and going to get 5 and hoping for 6 to come out!!! And also hoping for a dragon quest monsters!!!!!!!

Love the game... Cloud save doesn't work. I love this game! Very nostalgic. I would give it 5 stars if the cloud save worked properly. Please fix this.

iPad battle manu. The iPad battle manu cover on monsters and background….. I want to like iPhone don’t cover on monsters and background Please….

More please. I really hope we get the first 3 dragon quest games. As for this iteration, spot on with the one handed controls! Love it! Game runs nice and smooth and it's just as fun as it always is. The sound the game makes as a confirmation tone is very annoying. Perhaps it can be toned down? Also, Dargon Quest :)

Show support for longest running rpg!!. Great game mainly bought it for support because I own every DQ game 1-9. Americans want DQX come one square-enix stop leaving us out on good times!

No auto fight command. Pro: Good graphics and a fresh feel to an old classic. The story is still strong as ever. Con: Needs an Auto fight command, because there is lots of grinding which will put modern gamers off. Landscape mode would be nice for the ipad version.

I'll put 5 stars when Cloud support works. Gives error when trying to cloud connect. "Cloud authentication failed." And it works with other apps! Otherwise, perfect game.

Improper file save. The way this game designed its saving method with the iCloud is terible. Constantly deletes my new saves but erases it when trying to sink other tablets with the iCloud sync. Lost in game intrest , when you lose 30 hours of game play due to iCloud not syncing properly with using multiple tablets.

One of the best RPGs of all time. A great port of the DS game, now with party chat.

Audio. Could the game be tweaked to allow a different application to be playing audio?

DQ4. Awesome game that I can now play anywhere (without carrying my DS). Can't wait on the rest, esp 1-3.

Please fix the name!. Dragon Quest IV is a fantastic game and this version is excellent except for the glaring typo in the title. I hope this series gets the support it deserves in the US so that we eventually see DQVII on 3DS, and DQX localizations.

Masterful port!. This series was my childhood personified through gaming. They've done a masterful job on porting this over to iOS! I also love their port of DQ1 and CAN'T WAIT for II and III! Kudos!

Ruined by controls. Are you kidding me right? 15 dollars for the developers to make no honest effort at porting this game? Control scheme is HORRIBLE and ruins everything. two big thumbs down!

Great. Loved this game when it first came out for the NES, and it has stood up remarkably well. Great update, sprites could use some smoothing, but music is great. I actually like the controls, despite the complainers. I do play on the iPad mini mostly though. If you like classic JRPGs you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic game!. Love that they are making the dragon quest games for the phone now. I grew up with these and they still hold up 20 years later. Looking forward to them them releasing the rest. I've went 1 thru 4 and about to head on to 5!

amazing game!. no problems with controls but played on ipad. love the cloud save for transfer to my iphone. overall, an rpg must have for hardcore rpg fans and dragon quest fans alike...

love SE games but.... they still do not understand their target… they put it in portrait for their “target” of japanese riding the train. however their volume controls do NOT allow me to turn OFF the BGM or SFX. i can turn them down but not off. really… if i am riding the train doncha think i would want to turn OFF the music and SFX. they should pay closer attention to details. maybe then they could spell dragon correctly.

Repetitive. I played Dragon Quest VIII and enjoyed it, but this game is both too similar and too lacking in depth to be worth the price. It may have nostalgia value for those who played it before, however.

Great but the controls.... Another great rpg on iOS. I only have one request: Please Square-Enix... Rework on the control pad. It's frustrating to use and spoils the gameplay. Thanks!

Wobbly walls. Is it just me or is every single wall and building inside towns and caves all warped and wavy looking? Fun game but that is destroying visually. Maybe it's an iOS 8 thing?

Best RPG ever!!. Can't live without this game!

ok, not great.. after hearing all the rave reviews I tried to give this a chance. I played for about two hours before getting frustrated. the game mechanic of only being able to save in certain places is very frustrating. the combat system also takes a bunch of taps for low level random encounters which is a huge encumbrance when exploring.

FINALLY!!!. One of the best RPG's ever invented! Dragon Warrior/Quest is the only comparable NES RPG to the Final Fantasy series. And I actually think its much better. All we need now is a port of Dragon Warrior/Quest 3. 3 is the best, 4 is the 2nd best. Being Taloon is one of the best parts of this game. cant wait to play it! THANK YOU SQUARE-ENIX!!

A Must Have RPG!. Finally English fans have the chance to experience Dragon Quest IV in all its glory! The DS remake had party talk removed in the English release. Thank the Goddess that the universe has corrected this awful mistake on the App Store!

Game breaking bug. It is like none of the other reviewers bothered to play through the full game before reviewing it. At least in my copy, and on my iPad, there is a game breaking bug about 20 hours and it prevents me from finishing. That is just fantastic. I am so glad I spent 20 hours of my life on a game that I am physically incapable of finishing because a necessary boss does not show up where he is supposed to.

Fantastic. Still amazing the manual character control in chapter 5 and extra chapter make it even better.

You, Sir, are WRONG.. Okay, so this is partially a rebuttal to Llama56's review, because it contained an inaccuracie, and my anally corrective self can't let ignorance stand, and I rest until I set the record straight. I don't really care that the review is from a long time ago. What part of "anally corrective" don't you get? Right, so he said that Alena's chapter was poorly translated, and that it seemed that it was, quote, "written by Japanese middle-school students using Google translate." Well, my good ungulate*, you are WRONG. See, the folks of Maestral** are supposed to be a Russian analogue, and they speak like a Russian whose first language isn't English. It's why their speech is often peppered with Russian words and such. Thus, that section of the game ISN'T poorly translated, because it's MEANT TO BE THAT WAY. Alena and her fellow countrymen don't speak English very well, hence the broken "translation." Because they're Russian. It's the same reason people from Bonnie Scotla- er, Burland say "Och" and pronounce "tower" tur. Just imagine that Alena and everyone in Maestral sounds like Yakov Smirnoff, and you'll be good. Anyway, 'bout the game itself: it's 'effen brilliant. This version is a port of the Nintendo DS version (which itself was a remake of the PS2 remake), but with the added (re)addition of party chat, which are fun little conversations the party members will have and really fleshes out there characters. It was, for only Goddess knows why, cut out from the NTSC version of the DS port. (What makes it even stranger is that the DS remakes of V and VI had party chat, making it's absence in IV especially odd.) I have the DS version, and I can say that the iOS version is MUCH BETTER, solely because of the party chat. Seriously, that sh** is awesome. Besides that, DQIV also has, in my opinion, some of the best characters and music in the entire series, and one of the better stories in the series. The battle music and Alena's theme are my favorites, and character-wise, Alena, Ragnar, and Psaro are my among my top personal favorite video game characters of all time. Anyway, if you're a Dragon Quest or JRPG fan, then you owe it to yourself to get this game. * That's a fancy word for hoofed mammals like horses and llamas and the like. I try to use it when ever possible. ** That's the name of Alena's homeland. Yes, I am that much of a nerd.

Awesome. Please keep it up with DQ, SE! Can't wait for 5 & 6 especially 6!!!

Floaty Controls and No Landscape Mode. Glad to see DARGON was updated lol. Graphics and sound are true to the DS remake, but the virtual analog stick is all over the place. There's no option to switch the game to landscape mode, so you're stuck with the awkward portrait mode like DQVIII as well. SE, please fix controls and give us an option for landscape mode like the FF games!!!

I LOVE DRAGON QUEST!. First of all thank you square enix for putting Dragon Quest games on iOS. Keep it up!!! Dragon Quest is my favorite RPG series of time. And this to me one of the best stories of the series. I like the chapters in the game. Makes it really fun to play. I remember getting then Dragon Warrior IV for the NES for Christmas. I still have it. Everyone should play this game for a great RPG story.

Classic Dragon Quest!. This game is a quality port of a classic game and is a perfect fit for the iPhone.

Perfect port. Great additions from NES. I just finished the game. Great additions and alterations to the gameplay, weapons and armor as well as a fun new chapter. Didn't crash a single time. Casino is limited but as a side-game it's not significant. Anyone who enjoyed the old will love this version. Keep 'em coming!

Great considering the title is misspelled..... Awesome games but funny that the title is misspelled. Dargon?!?! Lol

The best RPG. Really fantastic!

Spanish!. I like Dragon quest series a lot. But I want to read the subtitles in Spanish like on final fantasy.. I hope square add Spanish on this fabulous serie

Excellent. Great game. However, portrait mode makes hands sore after playing a while with an iPad. It would be more comfortable to have the controls option to move them higher on the screen to offset the weight. Ideally, portrait mode would be best.

Looks good. Game looks great. Just wished they'd charge a reasonable price.

Fantastic rpg. This is a timeless rpg. The chapter layout introduces you nicely to characters and gameplay mechanics. Touch controls are very comfortable.

Good game, horrible cloud support. I can get cloud to link to my iPad Air, but I cannot link my iPhone 6 so I'm forced to only play on one device. I can see the iCloud save on my iPhone 6 but the game says "cloud authentication failed" always. I purchased this game since cloud support was noted. Regret purchase now.

Decent port. Game's good and it's got restored party chat. Control scheme isn't for everyone, but it's really customizable. Hopefully this and Dragon Quest VIII make enough money so S-E can support Dragon Quest in the U.S. again.

Missing Party Talk Restored. If you are one of the people who wished they had not cut the party talk from the DS version you will not be disappointed with this port.

Awesome. An excellent port of a classic game! Portrait mode is awesome!

Please port dq7!. These games are my favorite RPGs... I would love to see dq7 on a system other than playstation. I'm definitely happy with what's been done so far
