BIXI App Description & Overview

What is bixi app? Official mobile application for Montreal metropolitan area’s bike share system.

It allows users to purchase one-way passes and memberships and to rent a bike. A map of the stations shows, in real time, the number of bikes and docking points available at each station so you can plan your routes. Bixi connects with the Health app and sends ride durations so your pedaling counts towards your health goals. Access your personal space to learn more about your trips and usage statistics.

BIXI Comments & Reviews 2026

Credit Card info stolen. Ripped my info and started having random charges

Easy to use. Great app and service. Just make sure you park the bike every 45 min.

Jump through hoops to cancel. The fact they implement auto renewal and make it so hard to cancel is just wrong, 0 stars for that alone. I never take the time to leave reviews but the number of hoops I had to jump through to cancel my membership was absolutely insane. Their website will tell you you can cancel in the app, that’s absolutely not the case don’t listen to what they say. You have to call the team, wait for the next associate and do it there. Absolutely unethical. Side note: the bikes are a fantastic service no complaints there, but the gimmicky stuff where you can’t easily cancel needs to go.

Best experience ever!. Thanks to Bixi bikes and app, I’ve spent 5 days visiting an ill loved one at the Neurological Institute & Hospital while getting into shape, easing my worried mind and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Bike docks don’t work / Confusing app. visitor of Montreal. signing up for the app and getting a day pass was a bit confusing. but main issue was some of the bike docks didn’t work at the clark / laurier station . i had to shove the bike into multiple docks before finding one that would click. it registered my bike ride longer than i actually rode because of this.

Deceptive pricing. Would have been cheaper to use an Uber. Tried to contact BIXI about the fees and the responded with a useless form letter 5 days later. Beware!

Loving it.

No brainer. This is a must for Montreal!

Love this bike share system!. Stations EVERYWHERE and the app is super easy to use! And the monthly subscription is very affordable.

No grace period for going over 30 minutes.... Even after purchasing unlimited rides. My partner and I rode together and she got tired, so we both got charged an extra $1.85 for being 2 minutes late. I won’t be using this service again after this trip.

Bad distribution of bikes around town. Customer service is poor on the phone. Often bixi docks are either completely full or totally empty. Don’t waste your money

Parfait.

Pretty Good. We used BIXI the entire time while in Montréal (2 weeks) a part from a hidden $200 fee hold on my card which was later sorted out it was really great to use the bikes. If only Montréal had more dedicated bike lanes.

Never works!!. Just doesn’t work, won’t let me check out, gives random error messages

Extremely convenient. Perfect tool for the summer in Mtl🤩

great 👍 value, easy to use. great value ….

it’s great. Love this app, very convenient!

Convenient. Better option than metro if you’re looking to get more cardio into your lifestyle 😁

Highway Robbery. This service is robbery. You can rent a bike for a day, but apparently you have every 30 minutes to return it to a station lock it and take a new one all over again. Failure to do so are additional charges every 30 minutes. Amazing service montreal, bravo for inventing a service to robb people. The perfect tourist trap

Don’t forget to rehook your bike. The bike borrow works well. I only had two issues with it. For some reason you can’t go beyond an half an hr at a time or it changes you 3 dollars every 15 min. So, you have to use it in half hr increments, which makes trips broken up as your looking for bike stations before you reach your destination. On the other hand, they are all around the city. Number two, there are no bike stations at St. Joesph’s. So we almost made the mistake of taking our loaners all the way to St. Joseph’s Oratory. That would have been a big mistake. We forgives the reason for no bikes is because they would have to continuously bring bikes to the top of the Moutain, as St. Joseph’s is up a rathe large hill. Chow for now

Bad experience. The app wouldn’t even let me register my credit card or my friend’s credit card. We wasted a ton of time. Frustrating.

App STINKS!!!!. Bixi's app is worse than useless. It only works for three days and then it stops working unless you purchase a membership. I called customer service while I was standing in the street at the bike rack trying to rent a bike. When I finally got a service rep on the phone she attempted to "upgrade" me to a membership too. All I wanted to do was rent one bike; my credit card info was already entered in the app. I deleted the app and just swiped my card in the card reader station at the other end of the bike rack; that worked. Do not waste your time on this useless app. Just rent a bike the old fashioned way.

Try user testing, as a treat. Deeply frustrating experience. Even the inputs are wrong (numeric requirement on a Canadian zip code).

Garbage. This app is garbage. It doesn’t update and you don’t know until you get to the docks and realize there are no bikes there even though the app said there were plenty. Then you realize it says 14 hours ago. Even if you hit the refresh button. Even if you force close. Junk.

DO NOT USE. WILL OVERCHARGE YOU, especially if you purchase a monthly membership, which they make it very hard to cancel and will charge you if you cancel it anyways

The time. Everything is okay except time limits

UNDISCLOSED CHARGING. Membership maybe fair but if you do not have a membership and you use for a one time use you will have 100 dollars taken out of your account for 10 days maybe more depending on your bank. Note they will take 100 dollars every use so if you use 3 times they will take out 100 dollars 3 times. This is not disclosed vividly when downloading and using the app.

Nice app.. Visited last week. Bixi App worked great. What a great way to explore the city.

Everything I Need. The app is easy you use and provides what you need to get or return a bike. I like the fact that it has a timer so you know how long you have had the bike. Also it is nice to be able to see the bike routes on the map.

Poorly conceived and limited, use a 3rd party app. Congratulations to the Bixi team on finally releasing an official app for the iPhone. Third party apps have only been available for at least two years so I'm happy to see you staying current. My favorite part of the app was when I opened it for the first time and it asked for access to my location which I granted. Guess what it asked next? Which city's bike service I want to use, even though I was standing three feet away from a bike station in Montreal. The start page has seven icons, only three are actually useful and of course they can't be rearranged or removed. Things don't get better at this point. Both the Telus and SkyMotion items open Safari, i.e. take me out of the Bixi app. Would it have been so hard to build a browser into the app like thousands of other apps seem to do? The Settings item only has one setting, which city's service I want to use. The About should really have been buried under Settings. Bixi Perks actually sounds cool until you open it up and see that there are only six participating businesses in Montreal. Honestly six isn't even worth bothering with, what was the sales team doing all winter? The two important items List and Map are simply different ways of viewing the same information. One item would have been fine especially since there's already a toggle once you are viewing the stations. Much like the 3rd party apps there is a list of stations which can also be viewed on a map, all sorted by proximity to you. All the other apps manage to display both available bikes and available docks at one time with requiring me to toggle between them, why can't you do that? What's up with the Timer function in the station list, shouldn't that be a separate icon on the home screen? Max time is 60 minutes and can only be set in 15 min increments, seems far too limited. Now on the Bixi website there is a map with six different colors of pins representing things. On the website, red pins represent "In Service" from the app, red pins with an X represent "unavailable stations". From the app, green pins represent functional stations with bikes or docks available depending on what you are viewing, meanwhile on the website, green pins represent Communauto stations. "To Come", "Sponsored", "Special Event", "Blocked" and "Communauto" indications simply don't exist in the app. Let's pause for a moment and exit the app and head over to the Settins app. Scroll through the list of apps and you'll see Bixi there. Opening that up allows you to select a city. I can select New York or Chattanooga even though neither of those cities are available from within the app, and neither of them is the city I'd like. I was originally looking for a way to change the language of the app to French, but apparently that's not possible. Since the main purpose of the app is to find Bixi bikes, shouldn't the app launch into the Station list? Or perhaps launch to where I was when I last exited the app? How about giving me a basic intro on Bixi, especially important for the tourists so they don't have to try to decipher the instructions on the station computers. How about letting me pay for Bixi service within the app and just display my 4-digit code on my phone? As a Bixi subscriber, why can't I log into my Bixi account and see the same information that I see when I use the website? There's also no link to the Bixi website, there's no News section displaying recent blog entries. There's nothing linking to the Bixi Facebook or Twitter accounts, there's nothing providing info about becoming a member or trying to sell a membership to me. There's nothing for the Bixi store either. Overall what would have been considered a poor app three years ago now looks downright disgraceful for an "official" app. I really hope something more substantial and better conceived is coming in the near future.

Glitchy app, broken bicycles.. I tried a Bixi subscription for a couple months and decided to delete. I usually spend 20 minutes walking around to different stations. I find either bikes in disrepair, no bikes at all, or experience technical issues unlocking a bike. A good idea but very poor execution in Montreal.

Not worth it. The ride was fine, my bike made noises but whatever. I park it AND make sure the light turned green but it didn’t register on my app. I assumed it was fine though and as a first time user I didn’t know any better. They charged me $20 so I called and asked for a refund. They refused so I closed my account. Montreal has amazing metro and lime scooters, so just use those.

Good system. Still needs some tweaking. Some of the E bikes are locked and some of them don’t operate too well. I’m an experienced Ebike rider/Commuter, 4000 miles a year, visiting from the states. Also the seat posts are sometimes too loose and can’t be adjusted by hand easily shouldHave that corrected.

Horrible. Tried to get a bike for a one way trip. My card was declined so I took an Uber instead. Woke up to an $80 charge for a bike the next day when I didn’t even get a bike.

They will overcharge you. I’ve contacted their support, deleted my account, deleted the app, and charges of all sorts of amounts just keep happening. Better off walking… i think i’ve paid $50 and used this app for 4 days months ago… horrible company

Super easy to figure out. Used this app while visiting Montreal - it’s straight forward and the ride share program was widely available

Tourists be careful. Bixis billing practices are quite dodgy and make you end up spending much more than expected. It’s easy to signup for BIXI unlimited but almost impossible to cancel you have to do it from the website, not the app and they make it confusing, the electric bikes are very expensive and not included in BIXI membership, and most important of all be careful to make sure the bixis properly dock as the docks are finicky or you’ll continue to be charged for hours and hours, I ended up spending nearly $50usd just for a few short rides would have been way better off just renting a bike from the hotel. The rides also bill you after 45 minutes. It’s easy to end yo spending much more then you expected you have to make sure you 1. Cancel on website minute you leave Montreal 2. Make sure all rides are under 45 min and 3. Make absolute sure when you dock your bike you see the little green light, sometimes it “seems” docked but it will actually blink red and keep billing you. Buyer beware

Don’t use the app, use the kiosk. Was charged $30 for a ride because one of my 2 bikes wasn’t docked properly. The docks themselves are very difficult to operate, requiring a lot of effort to dock bikes (and I’m in my early 30’s and weightlift). I could only imagine the trouble someone older or weaker than me would have. I guess we missed the green light one time out of the dozen or so times we used the bikes. This was a $3 trip. It turned into the price of 2 Ubers. The policy is you need to call immediately. Called and emailed a day later after seeing the charge, and they are not willing to help even though the operator admitted the system and docks aren’t perfect. If you pay at the kiosk at least you can double check.

Worst app ever. This is seriously one of the most frustrating apps to deal with. It is VERY sketchy about connecting with a credit card, so much of the time the app is unusable. I thought it may have been user error last year when I set it up, but it’s even worse this year. The app will only let you rent 2 bikes at a time (when it’s working correctly, which isn’t often) so getting a family up and running takes 2 accounts. We tried to link it to 3 different phones, with multiple viable cc’s. It worked one time, then my husband’s account absolutely would not work a second time. By the 2nd day, the one account we had that would still scan would only do one bike (despite being set up for 2 on the account). It is unbelievably frustrating. The bikes were great when we got them to unlock. Worst worst worst app. Honestly. Save your time and sanity…. just rent bikes privately when visiting Montreal.

Useless app. Unable to change phone number, unable to change cc info… so basically a useless app. Impressive

Credit Card doesn’t work on the App. Avoid app, credit cards doesn’t work. Trash app

Easy, clear, saving me time and $$$. I’m a very happy new customer. Having used Citibike in the early days when it first launched in NYC, and now moving to Montreal and stepping back into bike sharing years later - wow! So much easier and just all round awesome.

Fantastic! However a method for offline passes is needed. They app is amazing. But if you don’t have data constantly you can’t use it with day/3day/weekly passes. A solution would be random rotating codes, synced so that the app could produce a code correctly even when offline.

THEY DRAINED MY BANK ACCOUNT. SCAM ALERT-DO NOT USE BIXI! It is a fraudulent company. You will NEVER be able to cancel, and they LIE and use unethical business practices. There are CURRENTLY MULTIPLE LAWSUITS against this company. They will drain your bank account. DO NOT USE!

Best way to get around Montreal. That app is easy, and their stations all over the city

Like. Noiiice experience❤️

Best way to get around Montreal. The Bixi system, and the Bixi app, have grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years. It’s the best way to get around Montreal and a joy to use.

Love it!. As a visitor in Montreal, it’s such an easy, beautiful and fun way to see this beautiful city! I can’t wait to go again!

Meh. Keep having trouble with payments as a non Canadian resident. Please implement something more straightforward like Apple Pay

The new update really needs improvement. First, sharing with friends option disappeared: the 2-people silhouette can’t be found. We tried to unlocked a bike for a friend and there’s no way to do that. Second, the app simply says “something went wrong” whereas some problem can clearly be indicated: for example, once I unlocked a bike that’s not great, when I docked it and tried to unlocked another one, the app said “something wen wrong”. Took me a while to realized that it’s simply because the first bike wasn’t docked properly and the app could have said “it looks like you already unlocked a bike” which will solve the problem easily. Then after I docked the bike properly and tried to unlock another one, the app said the same thing, where it would’ve been much nicer to say “please wait for a minute after you dock a bike to unlock a new one”. These kind of things really matter for the app user because it affects people’s mood and stress level a lot, especially when their friends are waiting or when they are in a rush. Knowing what’s wrong and knowing that it’s a easy fix is much much better than not knowing what’s wrong exactly. Hope the developers can fix these issues sooner than later.

Quite reliable. Not bad

Balade. Expérience très satisfesante

Overcharged. Charged $25 for a short trip. Customer service was very unhelpful. Would not recommend to anyone who does not like to be overcharged. Be careful.

100 $ for nothing. When I tried bixi for a first time it is charged me for 100 dollars literally for nothing 😧😧😧my total cost of the ride was 5,49 btw and I paide both !!!

Useless. Useless

Good update. Really like the new UI

Love itttt. Useful, Easy to use

Scam. I bought a 2 pases and the cost was 2.32$ Suddenly I received a 200$ charge in my bank account. What is this ??? I couldn’t even use a freaking Bike cause the app never wanted to read the code and then it said that If I wanted to buy another pass

Buggy, unreliable. Can’t scan, depends on day. Horrible IT AND TECHNOLOGY. Very buggy Still the wordt management and IT. Stations unavailable. I can’t describe what a waste of taxpayers money this app and its developpers are

Great service. Love gaining points for e bike

Unusable unless I update?. Come on

Enjoyable. It took a bit to figure out how to create an account but once it was set it went smoothly and we enjoyed the service.

Terrible experience. Parked the bike and saw the green light. But the app keeps counting as I didn't end my ride. I tried to pull out the bike in order to re-park it, but it didn't work. Nothing I can do during that time. Sent an email to customer service to report the issue, and no one followed up. It was a 20-minute ride and cost me 17.4 dollars. The CS said it didn't park properly and kept counting the duration until the next customer unlocked it. I'm not using it anymore and am not gonna recommend anyone to use it.

High prices with the terrible services. Terrible service, having hard times with getting group rides, no empty docks!!! Usually there isn’t any available docks between Verdun and Lasalle! Always trying to find an available dock and wasting my time on that!!! Terrible!

Writing this as I walk 20 mins…. What an inconsistent app and network generally. I use it numerous times a summer and about half the time the payments won’t go through at all on app or on the kiosk. The other half of the time I can complete a purchase and then half the bikes won’t unlock or are in need on maintenance. Weekend mode of transportation because too unreliable if you ever need to get somewhere on time…

A éviter.

Great interface update. The usefulness and accessibility of the map greatly improved since the last update 👌

Génial. Super service!

Totally disappointed. This is stupid! It is like I throw out my money in garbage. I got the seasonal membership and I can hardly find available bikes in the stations near my place. It is most of the times empty. And it does not work properly! It showed me 3 available bikes, I took the bus and ran for it to be able to get 1. But none of them worked! The code didn’t unlock any of the bikes! I am really angry! It’s like hunting! I run to hunt a bike, and when I get there, no one unlocks!!!!

They charge you 15$ a ride!. They charge you 15$ a ride if you don’t read their minuscule font that the ride is 30 cents per minute and no minute is included when you get the one-way pass! Ridiculous user experinece!

Horrible experience. Worst thing I ever used

Easy going. Practical, updated, usefull, I enjoy my city trips more with bixi!

THIS APP SUCKS!!!!. This is a terrible app. Can’t get a bike to save my life. Always comes up with error messages “payment in progress” or “couldn’t complete purchase please call support” this obviously leads nowhere and now because the app can’t complete the payment I’m late.

How to log out?. I had created a second account with a different email to be able to buy the season pass. However, it has been impossible to log out the app to log in with the new account. It isn’t possible or I just haven’t figured it out?

Meilleur service pour se déplacer en ville!. Merci bixi!

better than bike app toronto. Better than bike app Toronto

Poor for tourists. Cannot rent 2 bikes with 1 account. Stupid if you’re a couple from out of town.. Rented 1 but couldn’t rent another. Rented 1 e-bike and walked to another nearby station where a 2nd e-bike was. Tried repeatedly to set up a second account with a second card/email but couldn’t. Was charged for the first bike even though we didn’t actually go anywhere.

Evil Business Practices. So, I decided to try out Bixi as I was in Montreal. I naturally bought the monthly pass as I wanted to take multiple rides. Little did I know that the monthly pass is actually a monthly subscription. So I got billed two months after I left. And they have no way to cancel that “pass” through the app. You have to go through the website which is not easy because even the billing and password reset emails are in french with no english option. Absolutely disgusting way to conduct business.

Application terrible.

Anti consumer. You can do everything from the app, but to cancel your membership or stop auto renewal, theres no option or even link to do it from app. Its so easy to put all card details and start your membership, but they make it so convoluted to cancel anything. This is purposeful and direct anti consumer.

Absolute rubbish UX. Bixi is great, but this app is terrible. Somehow they revamped it while keeping the awful auto-zoom and in the process made the icons less clear. Please fire the contractors responsible for this awful interface.

Super easy and comfortable!. Bikes everywhere!

BIXI season in mtl rules. In town for business. Took the bus for the first few days. Associate introduced me to BIXI - game changer. It drove my commuting costs from 10$ per commute to about 75cents per (with a 3 day pass). Used it for all quick trips in town. Perfect for a city the size of MTL.

Disappearing trip timer. Sometimes the trip timer doesn’t appear on my bixi app in the corner, super frustrating when the bike apparently ‘doesn’t dock properly’ and you get charged for a 9+ hr stationary trip because you triple checked everything including the app and had no way of knowing. Beware of glitches & apparent user error costing you way more than the bus would have been 😩

Horrible and Outdated. Worst bike app I’ve ever used. No Apple Pay accepted, doesn’t save any information from your sign in and when I enter my credit card it’s just stuck on validating card. Please fix your horrible app!
