Geo Synthesizer App Description & Overview

What is geo synthesizer app? Geo Synthesizer is a musical instrument and MIDI controller. Originally a collaboration of Wizdom Music's Jordan Rudess and Kevin Chartier (MorphWiz, SampleWiz) and Rob Fielding (Mugician), Geo Synthesizer is an incredibly expressive musical instrument specifically created for a multitouch surface. Jordan is now working with Roli-Labs, creators of the amazing Seaboard instrument on an exciting future for Geo Synthesizer and it's users!

A comprehensive Geo Synthesizer manual is available at: http://www.wizdommusic.com/GeoSynth/manual.html

Jordan says: "Since touching a preliminary piano keyboard on an iPhone screen and realizing the amazing potential for musical expression on a multitouch device, I have been inspired to create next-generation musical instruments for iOS. Geo Synthesizer is a dream come true in many ways. It is the fastest truly playable iOS instrument that I have put my hands on to date. I can fly through the range of an instrument while expanding on the kind of advanced pitch control we introduced in MorphWiz. As someone who grew up with synthesizers, I can tell you that pitch bending has never been this good!

"Geo features many of my custom sounds and in addition, Geo is also a MIDI controller, so you can use it with any external midi instrument or virtual MIDI. Virtual MIDI allows you to control an app running in the background on the same device! Geo Synthesizer also now features AudioBus, a technology that allows one to interconnect audio apps in exciting new ways! A great feature of Geo is that internally and externally we send independent voices on each note played, so as an example, you can pitch bend one note and not the other, or add unique expression on every note! I can't wait to see the YouTube videos of all of you guys rocking out with Geo Synthesizer!!!"

My favorite iPad app. Excellent midi controller. Works well in conjunction with Reason running on my computer or Arctic Keys on the iPad. Doesn't require additional hardware to interface with your computer.

Pretty awesome.... I LOVE this app, don't get my wrong, it just keeps sticking on me. Either no sound what-so-ever or (yes, the volume is up) it keeps sticking on the last note. Uninstall and reinstall and it works great, don't know the problem. iPad Air here. Still, all in all, HIGHLY RECOMEND!

A Must Own IPad app!. The sounds are fantastic, and the interface BLOWS MY MIND. if you play guitar, BUY THIS APP. The interface is basically like a guitar fretboard, and you can add as many "strings" or "frets" as you like. I have played guitar for 15 years, but am new to synth. Took me about 30 minutes to get used to the interface on this app, and then BAM, shredding this like I do my guitar. Chordwork is easy, the smart octave feature is absolutely BRILLIANT, and the fact that i can midi control my other synth apps on here, such as NLog or Sunrizer, is worth the price alone.

Jordan & Team Knock Another One Out of the Park!. Outstanding feel and quality that you can expect from Wizdom Music. The patches are worth the price alone. Truly amazing what these guys come up with!

Great instrument. This app is downright fun to use. It's also really great for more serious recording with all it's different patches or as a controller.

My favorite touch-based controller. The built-in synth is cool, but I tend to use this app as a controller for other synth apps and for external MIDI devices. My only suggestion for improvement would be for the max columns to be 1 more (like GeoShred) and to output MIDI note velocity based on touch pressure, if that's even possible to do well.

Samplewiz + Geo Synthesizer = Awesome!. I love this app not only as a standalone but I also like how you can connect and trigger sounds and samples in Samplewiz.. Originally before Geo came out I was hoping that Samplewiz would support the AKAI Synthstation25 so I can play it out on some keys instead of on the screen. But with the Geo Synthesizer it provides a unique and easy way to play music with what appears to look like a six string guitar like feature that can be adjusted to fit more or less chords on the screen and is fun as well as effective. Even though playing on the Geo is cool, I still want to see Synthstation 25 support sometime down the line for both Geo Synthesizer and Samplewiz Thank You Jordan, Kevin, and Rob for putting a great app in Geo Synthesizer.

Very cool. I'm having difficulty sending midi to Reason though. I have rtp midi installed and can get reason to recognize my iPhone as a control surface, but when I select a midi track I get nothing. Any ideas what I might be missing? Wifi midi is on in app and I'm using network session one under midi config. No luck.

Outstanding!. No matter what, I always buy Jordan's apps. They are always steps ahead our expectations!

Fantastic Midi Controller. Adopt this midi controller app if you want your melodies, licks, and chords to become alive. The note arrangement allows for greater expression than a standard keyboard layout would. Wish list: 3D Touch for velocity and after touch

Excellent!. Absolutely love this app! The fact that I can use it as a midi controller over my wireless network makes it that much better. Very fast, stable and great price.

Very useful.. A great tool. Been using this since release and have used it for many of my projects. Great for leads but also fantastic for filling in the gaps.

AudioBus Please!. Easy five star but needs audiobus and or copy past. WHY? WHY? This should be a no brainier. Nothing on earth sound like this and to be able to use this with loopy hd. Please and other audio support and I will update to five stars ASAP. Thanks for a great app. Now get on audiobus support. PLEASE!!!!

Favorite app of any type. This app is awesome. Jordan Rudess and Kevin Fortier are geniuses. I start every morning with an improvisation along with whatever happens to be playing in my car, and it starts my day like black coffee. And I only have the phone version, I can't wait to try it on an iPad:) If you're a musician, GET THIS APP. Or even if your not:)

Hooray for 6s!. Hooray, Geo Synthesizer is back in the game for the iPhone 6s! The stuttering (due to the 6s higher native 48k sampling rate) is now gone. Kudos to the developer, who was very responsive to the issue. Great support on their part.

Fantastic!. Jordan Rudess and his team have essentially created a new and sensational instrument. It is the best thing I have seen come along in twenty years of experimenting with music stuff. Four years ago I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and haven't been able to play an instrument. The iPad has made things better but Jordan has just piled up icing on the cake! His understanding of how things should work is awesome. If you have a disability and miss your music this is the app for you. I consider all of his apps essential tools for any musician, hobbyist or professional. If you don't have it, get it, get it now!

Good controller. It works and the key structure is well thoughout. The upper controlls are a bit of a throw off.

Great interface but.... Needs an update to work with Bluetooth midi. I really love this interface but can not get it to work with Bluetooth midi.

Not working with GarageBand. It does not work with GarageBand it does work with other synth but the tutorial shows it with GarageBand and that’s what I was looking for.

Disappointed.. :( no updates in the past 3 years. I love the tones in this synth but there hasn’t been an update for 3 years which disappoints me

Another cool app.. This is a bit like Mugician and Cantor as far as the incredible interface, I'm not real fast on a iPad keyboard graphic, but the way these apps are laid out I can seriously fly. Works great controlling other apps through its Midi output, and all in all this is just a lifelong 5 star app. I can see why bands are actually using it on their new albums. This is a real 5 star app. 4 sure.

Back and Better Than Ever!. Thanks for the update for my favorite iOS instrument. Links to SampleWiz like it's supposed to! Woohoo!!

Too much fun. I must admit I was a little put off by the screen shots of the "keyboard", thinking it would be way too hard to figure out. But after watching some vids of GeoSynth in action I decided to give it a shot. And after just a few minutes of playing it I was ripping some pretty impressive "solos." All I can say is, this thing is amazingly fun to play! I'm thinking how way cool it would be to be able to "split" the "strings" to allow say, bass on one side and guitar on the other. It could then played somewhat like a Chapman Stick. I love it!

a $10 haken continuum? with a tap-guitar layout?! YEAH BABY!. Having been an early tester for this app (full disclosure) I can unequivocally state that Geo's become my favorite instrument and midi control surface. Being able to actually see the pitch geometries during play has taught me many things I never knew, all while just playing... This is a true stage and studio performance instrument. Rob, Kevin, and Jordan have hit a grand slam with this one, and that's only considering it as a midi control surface! You also get a slew of lovely new patches, and you can import your own directly from editing them in SampleWiz! (buy that too, as a companion app.) ... and don't forget that Geo honors background midi applications, so you can *play* SampleWiz or other ipad-native synth apps as a self contained unit, without having to get out the midi mobilizer or camera connection kit usb adapter to control an outboard midi synth. If you're a musician, you need this app. You need to be exposed to this control interface. It's something new and delightful that improves on the keyboards and guitars you already know.

Expressive, flexible interface; some limits. + Some very good sounds (and you can import your own through SampleWiz) + Expressive, flexible control interface - Does not currently work with Sunrizer (as of Nov. 1, 2011). - Graphics aren't on the same level with the rest of the instrument.

Great playability on the iPhone. Get instrument! I've been looking forward to this one since Rob made Mugician. It sounds great and plays wonderfully! And I love the MIDI in the background. (Didn't try it over Wifi yet...) Best $10 I've spent in awhile!

An Experience like no other. After the initial 15 minutes of progged out bliss, I can only offer that it's kind of like playing a kaleidoscope. If that seems crazy, well amazingly enough the app makes perfect sense after your basic survival instincts kick in and you let go of the ropes. I think I can fly now.

Very nice. I love the sound quality and design, but I have had to tap the drop down menu button numerous times to get it to work. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Help, I deleted some presets. This app is amazing, awesome features, great feel, great presets. I am going to use some stuff as intros to my band music. Can anybody help me get back some of the presets I deleted on accident?

Nice. Great app and very ingenius. But, these guys need to get away from the cartoonish look of all of their apps and tame the "wiz" reference a bit in everything. You're really not wizards of music by any stretch. I think most of the real wizards of music are either dead or really old. Might want to have a look at some of the new Moog apps for some interface design ideas.

Average. Ever since I downloaded Animoog, I've had very little need for this app. First of all, the sample sounds are a bit adolescent and the app is nowhere as intuitive as Animoog. I was impressed with the slide feature but again Animoog has it beat. A for effort just the same.

Good Sounds & Midi. Having Audiobus support really allows you to get some great combinations with other apps and it's guitar like midi controller is very useful.

Great. I have all of JR's apps, this is a real trip . The only gripe is where is the manual?? Most everything is straight forward but some midi configs are a little blurry and can't seem to get sample wiz to work with it. All in all that's small stuff compared to what this power house can do. Thank you Jordan and team for a new tool that outshines all previous apps that are out there. GREAT

Clicking issue on iPhone6.. Software will run on iPhone 6+, but it makes a clicking sound when you play any of the notes. It's annoying, but can be corrected when you wear headphones, as the clicking stops. Neat little toy.

the iPad continuum has arrived!. This is my third update of this review. I've gotten tougher with issuing 5 stars, but the more time spent with this app, the better it feels. 1. Works great as a wifi controller on Win7 64 with rtpMIDI and Live (or other DAW/VST). 2. Works equally well on iPad or iPhone so I can pick one and still use the other to control another app for performance 3. Octave auto feature truly makes this an astonishingly intuitive controller with features truly new to the iPad. Check out some of Jordan's videos to see this in action. Finally the best reason, The developer is on top of taking care of problems. Thumbs up to Wizdom. Can't wait for other devs to update so more apps can be controlled this way.

Clicking sound is terrible. Please fix the clicking sound. (iPhone6)

Well executed, but somewhat disappointing.. I paid $9.99 for this? It's okay, but it seems unfinished and lacks the sophistication, ease of use, and patch-prgramming quality of Animoog. It makes terrific use of multitouch, but I can't imagine using any of these sounds in my music. Is it too late to get my money back?

Broken. Does not work on 2017 iPad Pro with iOS 11.

Thanks for keeping this going!. This is one of those apps that I've always liked.

The iPad is now a real musical instrument. This is the best music performance app I've seen. I've been using the Animoog in my keyboard rig for a while now so I am comfortable playing the touch screen surface but this app changes everything. The sounds are lush, rich and vicious when they need to be and the playing surface is incredibly expressive, easily adapted to after just the first few minutes of playing. But once you dig into it and get a feel for the non-linear layout (similar to the Harpejji), you'll find it to be a serious musical instrument. I used it at a gig on Saturday and it turned a lot of heads. Being a lefty, the unique playing surface makes it ideal as a left-hand soloing instrument, a nice surprise that brings a whole new palette to work with. I hope future updates will include additional sounds but it's so useful right now that it's cool the way it is. I highly recommend this to pro keyboard players. This is not a toy.

Simply the Best 🎹 app for live performance! Please fix the iPhone 6+ clicking sound. Amazing app / controller that works as a separate instrument not only on iPad, but on iPhone as well! The controller every keyboardist dreams of. Must-have iOS musician app. 🐞 Please fix the iPhone 6+ clicking sound.

Just one thing i ask. Please please please, include and enable the option to insert at least 1 Major 3rd break between the rows on screen. I have so many voicings from my guitar playing that would really make this a dream come through. Right now it bores me as I climb past four rows. Please with a cherry on top. This will be a 6 star app if you do this. Cheers... Please.

My life is changed. I'm already a big fan of Jordan Rudess' work and the fact that he is always teaching and sharing his secrets just inspires me to do the same and makes me a better musician. Amazing instrument-- it will complement my Kronos 2 coming in the mail in august :D -B. Hasson

Abandoned. Geo Synth is just a fun toy anymore. Jordan has collected his money and has now abandoned it. It had such potential. It’s too bad. I wonder what Jordan is hawking now.

Such a waste of money!. I’m a keyboardist and I’m not happy with this app at all. While the Geoshred is the holy grail of the guitar emulation, I was expecting to have the same feedback on synthesizers on this app. I was wrong. Such a ugly interface and nothing intuitive, this app is such a waste of my money, and I want it back! It’s not fair paying $10 on something I would literally throw in the trash can! Why I cannot have my refund on this??

Fantastic!. I am having so much fun using the MIDI in background with Geo Synthesizer controlling SampleWiz and other synth apps that support that feature. The app is very stable as I have played constantly for the last three days and not a single crash. I love the octave rounding switch with arpeggios...WOW! I'm still trying to get Geo Synthesizer to work with Animoog. That could be one wicked pair with the MIDI WiFi network connection.

Smokin!!!!. Yup Audiobus. Coooooool. Presets: Click just to the left of the load/save/email buttons on iphone/ipod 5th gen. On my ipod 4th gen. the actual buttons work. Whew. I thought I would need to leave it on the Violin setting for life.

Another great Iphone app from Rudess. I knew that this was going to happen eventually and now it's a reality. An iphone musical interface that allows me to really fly on its playing surface, unlike anything I've experienced on any instrument to date. There is this magical function which enables one to soar through the register of an instrument (perfect for the small screen of an iphone) and I could hardly take time to write this review because I didn't want to stop practicing my 5 octave arpeggios! The sounds are awesome. Some really great guitar like tones included. Wow. Thank you Rudess and team!

decent but glitcy. While it can be expressive it is also oddly glitchy for an app that costs $10.... my main concerns are how the sounds sometimes drop out completely when controlling other apps or when they are loaded it is horribly noisy until you adjust the volume up or down. Also, there is no smooth transitions between notes and they always sound "stepped". I would love to be able to smoothly glide between chords. I actually wanted this app to use for chord work but it doesn't perform how I had expected it to.

Making a case for copy and paste. Geo Synth has been out long enough for the IOS music world to realize this is the finest super-speed synth and Midi controller in the world. It is an app for your IPad or phone that you can play as a professional instrument and sound better than most. However, Geo limits its universal application going forward by not being able to record itself for Copy&Paste or whatever is coming on IOS-6. Right now recording must be dependent on an outside source, which dimishes Geo's utility! The World is moving rapidly toward inter-app audio and Geo needs to get ahead of the curve by including Copy&Paste ASAP. Great utility is why music apps like your are successful. Don't start short changing the movement you helped create!

brilliant!. this app is what finally convinced me to take the plunge and buy the iPad! Totally in love with this app!!

Will not open since I updated my iPhone software. I really like this app, I used it at a number of performances but immediately I updated my iPhone 4S to OS5 it started shutting down on the boot up. Jordan I'm a fan mate, can we get an compatability update. Thumb jam is one of my go to live apps now. I perform fairly regularly. LC+

Crashes on start-up. I can't review the sounds and interface because the app won't start up; I get the start-up screen, then it vanishes. I have upwards of 200 apps, and it is the only one which has ever behaved that way on my 3GS iOS 5. The developer isn't answering my request for support and I am very disappointed in the situation all round. If I ever get it up and running, I will update this review if possible.

Pricy. For what you get, really don't feel worth the price. This app really needs polishing.

Brilliant app!. I really like the playability and sounds in Geo Synth. I only wish there was a built-in midi and audio record feature that could then be played/recorded over top of inside the app, then copied/pasted, exported to computer, etc. Otherwise 5 stars for sure.

Fantastic!. What a great app. Can play at speeds I never thought possible before on iOS. Still learning the scales, but once I've mastered them it's gonna be even better! :)

Bug iOS 9. Core midi doesn't work like before.

Crashes. Looks good but, sadly, it crashes immediately upon start. I have an iPhone 4. Until this is fixed, the app is unusable!!

Absolutely Brilliant. This is not only a great synth power and versatility wise, but the interface is brilliant and innovative. They have really broken out of the box with this one.

Great app! but.... This app sounds awesome but it doesn't communicate well with audiobus keeps crashing With other apps like bias fx and cubasis and i'm also running it on a ipad air 2 please fix this problem, otherwise i would give it a 5 star.

Works.... I think this is a good app, I mean it works and does what it says. But the thing has an ugly interface and cheap graphics. Limited scales. I was expecting a little more for $10. I will continue to use it along with all the other midi control surfaces I have purchased but not happy about paying more than I think it's worth.

Doesn't work!. Bought it for my iPad 2 to use with Logic, however it keeps on crashing at startup!

I WILL TRANSFORM THE WIRLD WITH THIS APP. Needs a SIGNIFICANTLY broader SOUND library though

Simply amazing!. Thank you so much Jordan. You inspire me to make music. This app is amazing. Still learning all its features! ;)

I love this. Always have, it's awesome. Now you include AudioBus support? You guys are the freakin best! Wish I could give six stars.

Outstanding. Thanks for all your hard work

Not Mugician. Yes, it has a similar interface, and a more "advanced" synth engine, but... My fingers are accustomed to the spacing in Mugician. Yes adjustable here, but I'd love to be able to get the exact spacing as before instead of having to adjust it all the time. Next, the interface colors are nothing like Mugician. I have found that my eyes are tuned to the color and grid layout of Mugician. When I play this thing, my brain keeps telling my fingers that I'm going to miss the note, and I play fast at times (on the original, was not a real problem), so the difficulty gets exacerbated. Unfortunately, it is like learning all over again. Very disconcerting. And probably nearest and dearest to my heart was the synth engine of Mugician. I can't seem to create the same sounds on here, and it is very disappointing. Imagine playing a guitar, getting to know the instrument well, the sounds it makes, and then one day you strum it and all you hear is a canned violin sound. Or some weird noise. The emotional connection to the instrument has been trashed, all in the name of "progress." So, while I still have Mugician on my iPads, iOS 9 has introduced a nasty bug that sometimes makes the audio drop out. I went to the App Store to see if there was an update, but to my surprise, it was removed. I got a replacement app that was named something else, but installs as Mugician. All it does is crash. So I got this with high hopes, since one of the authors is the author of Mugician. Sad day. :( I guess like everything else, as time goes on, I'll just have to get used to change, even if it's just for the sake of change.

LikeIT!. I was fabricated in 1950,I am an Analog Man in a Digital World. Simplicity, functionality, are the things I like.People expect complex features in an iPad app. I have a computer for higher featured Music programs and synths.I run Geo through my wireless guitar rig,and its a fun and easy way to make music. I like playing for nursing homes and shut-ins,they enjoy the music and could care less about the source of the sound. When my grandson visits,(almost 1year old) he will be mesmerized and delighted to make music as he moves his little fingers on the iPad.

Caveat: For musicians only. Five stars because this is a musical instrument of great sophistication and endless potential. I just noticed that Rob Fielding (who developed and literally gave away the mind-boggling Mugician) was involved in this along with Rudess and other geniuses, all folks who spend a lot of time thinking about how to revolutionize music by harnessing the power and features of mobile devices. GS is either for like-minded musicians or other more conventional synth players who want to see what the fuss is about and maybe get on board the music o' the future train. The overall design is truly cheesy and, for just one example of U/I weirdness, the keyboard's display of a bunch of criss-crossing lines, which I think has to do with microtonality features--looks almost alarmingly complicated. Most of us are going to need guidance with this, and in spite of what other reviewers say, there is definitely a decent manual on the app's site, but I can't find a link to it from within the app, which goes along with some of the other almost passive-aggressive nature of the menus and buttons. The site offers some tutorials on how to play the instrument, with very helpful fingerings and scales. These tutorials were made by Rob Fielding, who, based on Mugician and these lessons, is obsessed with playing very fast, as if that were the main point of music. Also, these tuts, plus the very prominently displayed whammy features on the first menu, also can give the impression that GS is primarily a guitar emulator, which it is so clearly not. I've griped a lot, but that's because I would hate for a beginner to be put off from synth apps because they grabbed this one first. I also think Rudess et al should be more forthcoming about the fact that this is not the way to acquaint yourself with music making on the iPad. But, five stars based on the fact that it is a truly amazing, mind-boggling creation that will reward a knowledgeable musician looking to take part in the future of music.

THE app that had made iPad a unique musical instrument. This is absolutely my favorite app as far as musical instruments go; it has a layout that is intuitive and adjustable, it has an auto-ocatve jumping feature that allows you to do incredibly fast runs and arpeggios, the subtle control options for pitch-bends are unparalleled, the patches that are included sound great, and importing new voices through Samplewiz is a breeze. And these are the more-or-less basic features. Advanced users: Want to have play your other virtual MIDI synth apps via Geo, no problem! And you can adjust the volume levels of the MIDI voice and the Geo voice so you can have both a volume levels you have balanced to your taste. Do you want to explore or express your microtonal inclinations? Geo has you covered! And so much more than just quarter-tones. There are many other advanced features (filter adjustments, FM and harmonics adjustments...), almost all of which can be controlled on assignable performance sliders. All this being said, I will agree with a previous reviewer who said this is definitely not a toy. But hey, if you had never played a guitar before, would you expect to just pick one up and start rocking out? No, of course not! This is a totally new instrument! (Ok, maybe not totally new if you have played around with Mugician) This is an instrument with deep possibilities and, I believe, the instrument which best utilizes the touchscreen interface to date. One last note, before you buy this app read the feature list carefully, it is not a DAW, it is not a sequencer... It is an instrument and a controller and a very good one. I know it is frustrating to not be able to easily integrate the music you produce in various different apps, but with a little patience I believe these types of concerns may quickly become a thing of the past.

No words. Siri, find me a new adjective

Needs Update for iOS 8.3. Crashing on launch

Latest update makes this app unusable.. Dear Geo developers. Thank you for taking the time to update the app and make it iphone 5 compatible. It's nice to see the screen fully laid out on my iphone 5. However, with this new update new presets can't be loaded, envelope filters can't be adjusted once they're maxed out, and I have no access to the menu config page. Contact me at dj kipper dj at (g) mail if you need an iPhone 5 beta tester next time. I have loved this app but this recent update has made it unusable.

Ummm wow!!. Not really certain how to describe this! Truly unique, brilliant and incredible! Yes that works for now!

Very cool instrument. There is nothing about this that is a toy: it's a musical instrument.

Audiobus error. Keeps giving me "Audiobus initialization problem" error. Happening on iPad mini retina. On first gen iPad mini it seems to be ok.

Ridonkulous. I shred this thing to infinity

Amazing !!. Best app ever ! !!

This app is a miracle. Try it with MIDI!

Update needed. It's about to be April 1st 2017.Why has this app not been updated? It looks like this app was abandoned for no real reason.

Great. Incredible tones and versatility. It's incredible it this app allows you to do these arpeggios so fast on a small surface like an IPhone. Great job

Help. So I'm not sure why I can't figure this out. I'm trying to achieve two sounds One: A simple bass guitar sound. Two: A electric guitar sound. Also is there a way to record on geo? Aside from that this app is awesome once I figure out these 3 things I'm sure I will come back and give it 5 stars. :)
