Where’s my January 2024 electronic issue???. It’s January 10, 2024 and I still haven’t received the January 2024 electronic issue of Car and Driver. Usually it arrives by the end of the previous month. Phone calls and emails have accomplished nothing. No customer service at all. If I could I would cancel the remaining 6 months of my subscription.

Clumsey, clunky and slow to respond.. You’d think iPads were invented yesterday — this app screams low investment and poor usability. Awful. Avoid. Worse than every other publication app I use on my iPad.

Oh no - here we go again!. The app was recently updated and they went back to the old, crappy way of presenting the magazine. The UI is confusing and inconsistent. Most of the links do not work. In addition, all of my downloaded editions were deleted with this update! That includes all of the favorites I bookmarked. Worse, the space used by the old editions was not freed up. To do that I had to delete and reinstall the app. All this with no advanced notice of all the changes. I really liked the previous, simpler version.

Car and Driver is Always a Great Car Magazine. I have been a regular Car and Driver reader over the last 35 years. In that time frame, Car and Driver has always held the edge on all the rest of the car magazine population. It comes from the writing, the fact that they know exactly what you know, and they are not afraid to admit it. They are upfront and honest.

Does not work right most of the time. Can’t even restore my purchases after canceling my subscription.

Barely usable. Content is great. The app is obscure and incomprehensible. When it takes you to the website you get 404.

Good real world information. The magazine gives current information on cars available and in the pipeline. The information is practical and meets my expectations and interest

App will not let you access your purchase. Support will not respond.. App stopped working for the Jan 2024 issue. Still works for back issues. App support refuses to reply or fix the issue. Have been trying to reach them for a week. You will only get a form response with a solution that doesn’t work. Shameful.

I’ve had issues in the past, but love the interface now.. I have been using the Car and Driver app for several years now. The simple PDF-like version was cumbersome to maneuver. This one makes sense for an electronic version. I love the way that you can continuously scroll from the beginning to the end of an article. It also is great how you can leave the app and hours or days later come back to it and it remembers where you left off. There are a few minor quirks in scrolling. Sometimes I tap to scroll and it thinks I double tapped and zooms in. Another thing I struggle with is how to get the title & navigation bars to disappear so I can see the full screen. Other than that it’s perfect. And the Car and Driver content is always awesome.

Not usable anymore. This app was never that great. Then, for a while, you had to download issues offline or they would render all wrong. No graphics or formatting, all text was in 12 point Times New Roman. Okay, fine, at least there's a workaround. Now for the last 2 months, the links in the table of contents don't work. So there's no way to get to the articles you want to read other than tediously scrolling page by page from the start of the magazine. This is frankly unusable. I have emailed the apps support email. No response. I don't know what to do. I would love a refund but don't know how to go about getting one.

Poor. OK when it works, but I downloaded a bunch of issues to catch up on when on a trip and just came to read them on the return trip (4 days later) and none of them are available offline and need to be downloaded again. Seeing as I am sitting on the plane, it’s completely useless.

No cover story. Hey guys can you fix this months issue. The cover story is not there when you click on it from contents or when turning pages. Otherwise good magazine

Latest update ruined this app. The latest update changed the interface. Now the articles scroll vertically!?! The links are too easy to hit, scrolling is buggy, and the app is sluggish with this latest update. I saw nothing wrong with the old PDF-like presentation; this is, after all, simply supposed to be a digital representation of a physical magazine. Please get rid of this overly-complicated and sluggish interface and bring back the old PDF-style magazine.

Navigation is broken. I can’t navigate through the magazines since the last update. Swiping just bounces back to the previous page and only some links work. Given that the only purpose of this app is to read through magazines this app is currently useless.

Why is the app not updating?. Still stuck on January 2023 issue, contacted support numerous times and only response received is instructions on how to sync or restore purchases. That is not the issue, as other have mentioned, the app is not updating to latest issue.

Bad business practice. After my subscription expired I had no longer access to my magazines. I had 3 unread magazines and only got access after renewing my subscription. I contacted customer service but go a an answer on a question I did not ask.

So close to unsubscribing. I’ve had this app for years and the inconsistency with the release of digital issues on this has gotten ridiculous. Why am I seeing issues available on 3rd party apps like the news app weeks before the official app!!?? Not to mention the physical copies. GET IT TOGETHER HAERST!!

Up and down scrolling is annoying. Call me traditional but I hate having to scroll left and right AND up and down to read a single magazine. Please change it back.

Wish the app was better. This App is so bad I will probably end subscription before having a year. It’s a bit sad because I love the content but don’t want a bunch of magazines laying around.

Too easy to click on ads! Horrible new interface. Guys this is the worst. We spend money on a digital edition and every other page I'm clicking on an ad by mistake. Please over haul the entire UI - this one is just awful.

Forces ads to open, impossible to unsubscribe. When scrolling past an ad page the app forces open a browser that takes you to the product page. Infuriating and disruptive. Good luck canceling your subscription.

Going downhill.. The developer, Zype, has lost the plot. The February/March issue was never made available on the app and messages to their tech support go unanswered. If not resolved I’ll abandon the app and switch to a ZINIO based subscription.

Not working!!. Can not pass the pages, you have to go back to the cover and tap on a highlight to go to the page and then you are stuck there.

Relevance. Too many auto reviews are not relevant in the real world.

Life is better with Car and Driver. Read it and see what I mean!

Content fails to render. I paid for an annual subscription to Car and Driver. Things worked for about two weeks, then the content stopped rendering on every device I own. I have contacted app support, whom cannot resolve my issue and ghost me on subsequent requests for additional help. This has been ongoing for several months, over 2-3 attempts at reaching out to support but get no response, and no way to ask for refund on my subscription.

Worst App in the World. Every month when I try to access my subscription, the app does not recognize my username/password. I send e-mail asking for help, then we start the dance: Delete the app and reinstall, nope I have to send a ticket to reset your account, loose a couple more days Receive e-mail to reset my account! It works!, only after a week of e-mailing. Next month, start all over again (last 4 months) I’ve asked to cancel my subscription Run, don’t walk away from this crappy app.

Buggy as hell!. Been a digital subscriber for at least 5 years, at least 25 years of the print edition before that. App was stable for a long time and it was fine. But in the last 3 to 4 months it’s been terrible! It crashes numerous times while reading, and just this week, I had to reinstall the app a bunch of times because I got nothing but a frozen screen! Just started working now. I don’t know for how long.

Horrible!. I can’t find or access the magazine cover article for the March 2020 issue. The table of contents links to the wrong article. There are duplicate copies of most pages. Disaster! I would prefer giving zero stars.

Sucky app. Sometimes I can download and sometimes I can’t. When reading a magazine, it takes about 5 minutes and my iPhone is almost too hot to touch. For some reason this app takes a lot of processor power and this is a battery pig. I can’t wait to go back to the paper version of the magazine.

Can’t Log-in C&D Support Useless. I purchased a membership. But I can’t log in. I contacted C&D support, they tell me that they have no record of my purchase. But it’s on my discover card. I see it in my apple subscriptions. But they cannot locate me and I cannot log in. Apparently nothing they can do. Thanks for you help?

Still doing a poor job of updating. They released the April issue a few days ago, but still not the February/March issue. I don’t know what’s wrong with this app’s custodians!

rod. this app does not work i have logged out logged in several times as told to do by the support team it will only let me read the preview i have a new paid subscription ! when logging back on the app says its not in the correct format not much help from car and driver support im canceling this and saying dont buy this app

Throw us a bone. Make content available!! Give us the cliffnotes version at least. You’re using the app to hard sell the magazine. Why not just use it to create good will for your brand? Been a subscriber for years... HATE the app.

Very frustrating. I cannot log in after multiple attempts and following their instructions. Worst of all there is no where to email support unless you are logged in. Which is the very issue I am running into. Giving up on C&D as a whole.

Does not work. I love the magazine, but the electronic version does not work as it should. I have a paid subscription so I downloaded the December issue when it became available. I did not get all the way through it before the January issue was released, but I no longer have access to the December copy. To read it, I am prompted to pay again, even though I am a paid subscriber. To make matters worse, I attempted to download the January issue, but an error popped up saying I don’t have the storage space. This Ipad has 15 gb of unused space, so O know there is plenty of storage space. This app needs fixed because as it stands, I will not renew my subscription.

Great reading. Only the price per issue needs to come down for the working man and those on limited income

Absolutely terrible navigation. Awful. Impossible to navigate in a logical manner I honestly can’t even figure out how to read one of the latest comparison test. I see the title page of the test but no matter how I try I can’t scroll to the content using any gestures that makes sense.

Great magazine. I enjoy receiving the magazine each month. I have always been a car guy, and the magazine keeps me up-to date on the latest automotive technology.

Still the best car mag!. My car magazine subscriptions are down to only this one. I’ve been a C/D subscriber since the 80’s and still look forward to the every issue.

Doesn’t update issue on a timely basis. It is now February 13 and it hasn’t made the February issue available yet.

Paid versus free. Your app charges good money for a story n we can find the same elsewhere via other apps. Not a fan anymore.

Politics meets automotive. I subscribed to Car and Driver in hopes to receive information about cars, read about cars and be excited about cars, but instead I was greeted with the same old politics forcing information on electric cars (which cannot be handled on our grids and is lacking in charging stations). I don’t care about electric cars. I am not rich enough for electric cars. There aren’t enough charging stations where I live or in the country where I live to where I would even think about getting an electric car. Keep the politics out of it and just give me information about cars. Don’t force feed electric car garbage in these magazines. I AM paying for this magazine (which I don’t plan on continuing if next months installment has electric car ads and articles) so I want to see cars I can afford, that take gasoline, that are not destroying the environment as spoiled kids keep speaking about while they take private jets to their next big lecture shaming people who own SUV’s and other vehicles. I want to read about proper cars. Get on the ball and give me articles about cars, Car and Driver. Electric cars will never grace my driveway. I will never spend a dime on these powerless atrocities.

Be aware, there is no support from car and driver with this app. Long time subscriber here, for years it was OK, but this last automatic renewal one issue got skipped, AND THERE IS NO WAY to get it back!!! You contact CAR and DRIVER, and the answer is : contact apple! With a link, where of course there is no help… I let you imagine what will be the critic from C and D staff if while testing the last BMW and have a Power steering issue, and BMW send them to the supplier…. BAD QUALITY, BAD PROBLEM MANAGEMENT….

The worst.. I spend so much time trying to get this app to work, I won’t be renewing. I subscribe to many on line publications and this is definitely the worst. I love the mag but will go back to paper.

Burns up battery, won’t remember place in article; content great though. This chews up my new iPhone’s battery at a rate of 25% per hour, heating up the entire phone. This happens even when not interacting with the app! This is in “text” mode on downloaded issues. I rarely use “PDF” mode on the phone because of all the scrolling and zooming required. Terrible quality control in power usage. I can read an ebook for hours without denting the battery. When you swipe left or right from an article, all to easy to do by accident, the app always scrolls back to the top. This is inconvenient. Otherwise I always enjoy the content. Please fix these problems with the app.

Broken in iOS 17. After I updated to the newer operating system on my iPad, the app is broken. Text still shows up, but there are no pictures on subsequent viewing of an article or the TOC.

App is terrible. App is terrible. I have and active subscription through Apple, and issues are not downloading be abuse it says I am not a subscriber!

Worse than paper. Glitzy pictures, and cool cars, are worthless when the app won’t let me open it when “off line”. I download issues to read while traveling, but this app requires internet or it won’t display previous downloads. Subscribed to C&D for decades, and now, I have this awful digital substitute that only works when I don’t need it to.

Swipe still not working for March 2018 issue. Got the latest update on March 8. Swiping is still broken for the March 2018 issue (it’s working for the February issue). I’m on the latest iOS on iPhone X.

No language translation. If your not Spanish don't get this app. Fix it please, want to subscribe to a full year but don't speak spanish

Car & Driver. App for Apple products is a buggy POS. I’ve given up trying to view online and just read the pdf version. The latest issue is rather thin, the “25 cars worth waiting for“ article was interesting, but most of the issue was advertising including a Mazda infomercial which took up a third of the issue. Between this and the decision to only publish 10 issues per year, I’m questioning whether I’m getting value for money.

Crashes. Crashes immediately on opening. Can no longer access current or previous monthly issues.

Great. Great app, only needs an automatic page viewer so you don't have to zoom in and out so often

Not working as promised. They badgered me to subscribe to the digital edition, promising instant access - 2 months and several complaints later, I still have no useful subscription nor productive reply!

Keeps crashing. Used to work fine but keeps crashing since iOS 8. Uninstalling it fixes it temporarily but it crashes the next time... MAJOR let down!

Yah. Outstanding

Content keeps vanishing.. Downloaded content keeps vanishing. I have had to download the huge magazines several times and it takes forever. Retina users will be rewarded with terrible image quality as well. Just get the real magazines... they're infinitely better.

Well. Don't lesten the fa* under me

Love the magazine, but the app doesn't work.. Enjoy reading car and driver magazine, but its impossible to do when the app crashes constantly, refuses to load, or when the yellow dots don't work. Also, I would like to read in portrait mode sometimes too. The original version worked well, but this one is impossible to use. It seems like updates in general tend to make things worse. Please fix!!!

I can't unlock an issue. After viewing an issue for a preset amount of time, I can't unlock an issue. When clicking on it, nothing happens.

Bugs with new issue. Same problem as the others here. The issue stops downloading same spot each time. I've tried redownloading and even reinstalling the app. Another problem is almost everyday I'm reminded again that a new issue (M5 issue) is available.

Bad app. Keeps crashing and last update deleted all my previous downloaded issues.

April fools? Swipe def not improved. I cant swipe from the cover to the first page?

Existing Subscriber Bug. I purchased a subscription and the digital edition is not available in the app via the existing subscriber/email and zip option and the technical support is brutal. You got a better chance meeting the president before they get back to you.

This app is not making me happy.. New m5 issue stopped downloading at 46.9%! I didn't pay to get ripped off! Apple FIX IT NOW! I WANT MY C&D ISSUE!

Wow-What happened???. Car & Driver I hope your reading these reviews. The latest version is terrible. I have been a digital subscriber since the app was introduced and before that on Zinio and I have to say in no uncertain terms this latest release is a huge step back. So bad in fact I resorted to buying the paper version so I could read all the articles completely. Where to start? It only reads in landscape yet your Road & Track version still read in landscape or portrait mode. Some of the pages are missing, the GTI/ Focus article is missing the last paragraphs of the Focus review. The slideshows don't work. All purchases prior to this June show a buy instead of download. I have sent an email to support and they have offered a free subscription on Zinio or a refund for the iTune app. While these are appreciated I would be more impressed if you just fixed the app to work properly .

Very Broken....for a while. This app has been very buggy for a while now, I just renewed a month ago and half the pages are blacked out and navigation is not very good. I am seriously thinking of asking a refund. Very frustrating...again.

Doesn't work on iPad 1, iOS v5.1.1. I tried installing it over, also removing all apps from memory, and rebooting the iPad, nothing made a difference. This app starts and immediately crashes and quits.

Latest update Version 2.3.0. DO NOT DO THIS UPDATE! CAUSES APP TO CRASH! Update: (2012.11.07) So now they have release the December 2012 issue, and you cannot download and read it like before, unless you do the update to the Car and Driver for iPad app to version 2.3.0, which is still buggy! So does that mean no more future issues of C&D? Hmmmm. this is not good! PLEASE FIX YOUR APP! Update again (2012.11.08) Received an email from Hearst Publishing telling me to delete and reinstall app to fix crashing. Did so, and lost all my previous issues. Had to go and "buy again", as they would not download, even with following instructions regarding clicking the "missing issues" link, or even using the "already own this issue" link. Also tried the settings "restore purchases". All this does is ask for your iTunes password. Still unable to restore my previous issues. Now on to the actual issues themselves. NOT A FAN of the new format. Seems locked in landscape mode in some issues, and portrait in others (especially older issues). Scrolling pictures only works in non-zoomed mode. if you tap and zoom you cannot scroll images, as swiping brings you to the next page. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE release of an update that actually crashes way more than not, and is way worse to use than the previous version of the app.

Still no portrait display?. Still no portrait display mode. Some of the articles are cut short. This happened in the older versions too when in landscape mode.

Iphone 6+. Misleading update. This works on my 6+ but I still have black bars on the top and bottom.

Horrible update. Missing back issue rights even after restoring multiple times. I've been a subscriber since march, why can I only download issues since September?!?! New issue only has landscape, this is just terrible. Won't be subscribing anymore if landscape is the new required format.

Huge Disappointment. Downloaded the app then downloaded a single issue (since I saw that people had a lot of trouble with it) and of course, it did not work. The issue says "Purchased", I downloaded it no problem, you click it and all you get is a black screen. What a disappointment, every single app I have ever downloaded has worked, paid or free. C and D just lost a customer.

M. Love the app. It has all the same great articles than the paper version, and then you all the videos of some test drives. The only downside is when a new issue arrives, you have to log out and log in again to have access to your download!

Does not work for iOS. Won’t load any images. I have removed and reinstalled the app and still not working. Come on, fix it already.

Crashes. Crashes as soon as you launch it. Will cancel my subscription unless this gets fixed. I'm using an IPad Air 2 with iOS 8.1.

Crashes. Crashes immediately after opening.

I'm the only one!!. I'm the only one to review!!

bad.... I signed up for the monthly subscription for $1.99 a month. I got my first magazine, but when I got charged for the next month I received no option to download the next one. Support is limited as well. I recommend finding something different....

Mr G. Doesn't work on my 1st gen iPad. I lost subscription downloads after almost each iOS update and it stopped working completely after iOS5 update came out. It starts and shut downs immediately. Don't want spend any money on any magazines on 1st gen iPad. This app claims should work on iOS 5 but it doesn't. Otherwise app is well designed and hope will work on other newer igadgets.

App FAIL. Absolutely awful all I get is black screen after a download At least motor trend works

Rip Off Does not work. Do not subscribe to Car and Driver. It takes your money, but you get no magazine. There is no support number to call. Read reviews above, don't be fooled.

Horrible. Absolutely horrible app. Get with the times. Difficult to navigate, closes all the time for no reason and full of intrusive ads. Basically they scanned the magazine and uploaded it. Come C&D - spend some time to make a proper working app.

Nice App. Very nice app, but the new fly-out ads within ads are incredibly annoying, especially on an old iPad.

A major rip off.....or maybe not (revision). Not much good subscribing to a magazine that you cannot download. Gets to almost 47% and then stops. No contact information within the app. No recourse. I guess I just blew twenty bucks. Revision as of Nov. 27, 2011....... I am upgrading my rating to four stars now that the app seems to be working properly and downloading is possible. Once the issue is downloaded, the magazine is very readable and attractive. It presents the content in a very pleasant manner. The pictures and sideshows are very clear and well done.

Horrible App. I have been experiencing so many issues. Keeps crashing. Deleted and reinstalled the app and subscription to car and driver. Still crashes. I need a refund.

disappointed. I wanted this to be a good app and free up some space in my travel bags. This isn't the case. I purchased a single month and have been unable to read it. The app freezes or crashes constantly. I have erased and re-installed etc with no luck. A very poorly developed app unfortunately. If I can't get my money back then I may have to quit reading it even in paper form. Truly disappointing.

Download....Again?. It seems that every time there is an update to the app you have to download every issue again. Once they are downloaded it is fine.

Ouch!. You have taken a great, visually stunning reading experience and made it horrible. Not only was it unable to restore previous purchases but the "tap for slideshow" seems to have disappeared. Font is smaller and now looks optimized for landscape? Resolution seems worse? Was going to either lose my C&D or Motortrend subscription, may now be easier choice. DO NOT PURCHASE this app, it is a shadow of what it was previously.

Used to Be Good. Wow this used to be my favourite magazine now they changed the design so forced to read in landscape !! The text seems grainy on my iPad 2... So sad !!!

Extra $. Both MotorTrend and Automobile Magazine offer digital free to print subscribers. Car&Driver and Road&Track make you switch permanently from print to digital only or buy the digital separately.

Crashes continuously!. Love the format and full screen photos but can't find any love for the never ending crashes. What are we paying for? Fix or refund!! Last updated Sept 16 2014 Six weeks later and it's still useless but Road & Track is fine. Same f-ing publisher!!

Won’t Launch. Crashes every time I try to open on first gen iPad

Unfortunate update. The latest Car and Driver app update is horribly disappointing. Landscape format appears to be the only format (the previously available portrait format felt more like reading a magazine), and the clarity of the type is sub-standard. The app has taken a huge step backward.

Slow. To download the new article: way faster Features in articles: very very very slow. I didn't mind waiting before. I'm not sure if I'm in the minority. I can't read the article or look at your high definition pictures. It's a flaw. Please fix it. Been a subscriber since the mid eighties. :)

App crashes.... don't bother with this app it's really bad and unprofessional.

Terrible tech support. After 3 months the app now tells me my 1 year subscription is expired. Messaging the support desk has yielded nothing except canned responses 2-3 days between replies that haven’t solved the problem.

$8.49 for older magazine content.... Get real. You guys want to make $$$ as you struggle to stay relevant in a digital space now that print is dead? Charge a reasonable price and people might pay for older content. Try the $2.79 mark like the current subscription fee.

Sad to see how far Car and Driver has fallen.. Car and Driver used to not only be a great car magazine, but a great magazine period. Now it’s just flash and no substance.

iPad Version vs. Hard Copies. June 03, 2011 update: Feb 2011 to June 2011 issues are free. In other words, all available issues are free. Two-thumbs-up! ... note upgraded to Verizon FiOS broadband internet download speed 15 mbps and each issue download is super lightning fast! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ At the moment, all issues are free (Oct 2010, Nov 2010, Dec 2010, and Jan 2011). I have Broadband internet 3-to-5mbps download speed and each issue needed about 10-15 minutes to download. It's a nice User Interface (UI) experience!! This review will change from 5-stars to 1-star if in-app purchases (available issues) are equal to / more than hard copies ($9-10 for annual subscription).

I should have read the other reviews!!!. This app. in a word is HORRIBLE!! I would have never given up my print subscription if I had known what a complete disaster this app is. Car and Driver should be ashamed and fire whoever developed this pitiful app. Like one of the other reviewers I tried to open the app, a few windows would open and close and then it would shut down!!! I also tried deleting the app and reinstalling it to no avail. I also have a subscription to a travel magazine and I get both options of digital and print and I’ve had no problems whatsoever. Does anyone know if there is a way to switch back to the printed subscription?

Hachette Filipacchi or Hearst or whoever, I will not be double billed!!!. I've been a subscriber to Car and Driver for 17 years continuously and was excited when I bought my iPad 2 to begin reading my favorite magazine on the device. It really was one of the main reasons I bought the iPad. Then I discovered the publisher's policy of DOUBLE BILLING loyal readers and fans of this magazine... I am also a subscriber to Motor Trend, Automobile, and Road & Track; but CandD has always been my favorite and the only one I have renewed every year without pause (even the "yellow cover" reformat that made so many mad a while back). I know that MT and Automobile have a different publisher from you and R&T but come on guys, don't let them get one over on you like this and potentially cause subscribers to leave over it. Having a news stand reader or a website visitor without an existing print subscription pay for a brand new digital subscription is perfectly fine; on the other hand, double billing existing print subscribers or even new print subscribers is definitely not. Your magazine is a five star piece in my opinion, though one star is all this app will get from me and all it deserves until this unfair practice of double billing is stopped.

A Great Free Magazine for Car Enthusiasts. What more can you say? Interactive read on great topics. *Note: for those who complain about the long** download: it is stated in the description that all photos and texts are downloaded when issues are purchased. That's why it takes a bit long. However, the size of the issues aren't significantly bigger than most other magazines with lots of high def photos. **On my 50Mbps network it takes about 2 full minutes to download. I can only imagine how long it would take on slower networks. 3G DOWNLOAD NOT ADVISED!!

Beauty and the Beast. No crashing here. Graphic and text quality at the level you expect with C&D. Some other digital mags (this old house) should take a look at how sharp and crisp a digital magazine can be! I guess if I were seeing the crashing issues I would have a different opinion, but my subscription looks and works perfectly.

Not Worth Free…again. Purchased a subscription over one year ago. Subscription automatically renewed because I did not turn auto renewal off. It is off now. In over one year this application has never been reliable. Updates often erase content that has already been downloaded. Some updates have erased entire issues which are often 400MB or more. Content including pictures and videos is often missing. This application does not deserve any stars. Car & Driver does not earn the money they charge for this application and clearly, based on consistently bad reviews and consistently bad product delivery, does not care about their customers.

Fire the developer. This is by far the worst app change I've seen. It's a downgrade, not an upgrade. The old app allowed full rotation from portrait to landscape view, and each view was optimized. It was well done. The new app deleted all my purchased issues, and after I spent 10 minutes re-downloading each one, I see the landscape view is now just essentially the paper issue laid open, so there's are two pages on each screen view, rendering the print basically illegible. So now only the portrait version is readable. And the ability to click on a photo to see a picture show is gone from the old issues and doesn't work in the new issues. This is a fine example of corporate cost cutting run amuck. Go back to the old app, and fire the idiot that made this one!

Bad Update. Just downloaded the app and bought the Nov issue last week. I really liked it - I didn't have the issues other reviewers had and I let my print subscription expire so I can move to the digital version. Now that I downloaded the update, portrait orientation doesn't work nor do the slide shows. I will not buy any more issues until these problems are resolved. I can always read Road and Track instead.

Bad. Pages frequently do not load. Will probably cancel soon.

No subscription for print users and what's with the pricing.. I have a subscription to the print version, and with the incentives I get to re-subscribe, it is way cheaper that the iPad version. What gives? Paper and postage have to be the largest production costs, and the iPad version doesn't require either. I will admit that C&D has the best online format, I particularly like the fact I can have landscape or portrait mode, but you really need to tie into the print subscriptions to allow existing subscribers to download it. I may even move over to the electronic version only if the pricing were more appropriate to the costs involved.

Better. The app, while still slow to download issues, is by far quicker than some other apps I've downloaded. Once that is fixed it will be perfect. Guess that's the price you pay for downloading all content to read offline... Awesome pictures. Breath-taking!

Unfair. I don't think it's fair that you can restore the purchased magazines ONLY if you are a subscriber. I have bought a couple of editions as non-subscriber in order to see whether I want to be a subscriber or not. But after an update, all the magazine that I have purchased went missing. Each edition cost me $4.99 unlike the $1.99 a subscriber pays for. So, a subscriber pays less AND gets to restore the purchased editions. Whereas, I, payed a lot more and cannot restore the previously bought edition. That is truly unfair. Evo Magazine on the other hand, actually "remembers" all the magazines I buy, which makes it possible for me to restore them. And only for that, I have become an EVO magazine subscriber owing to their fair and honest business conduct. Unfortunately, Road & Track, Automobile, Robb Report, are exactly like Car and Driver Magazine. Actually even worse because one edition of Robb Report cost me $7.99. I rarely take time to write a review but this time I felt ripped off and had to share this with others.

Customer appreciation. I'm at a lost for words, so you saying that after years of continuous readership, your saying you would rather I put down the paper and read only digital because having both is to expensive to maintain. What ever happened to something extra for loyal customers who were with you through the print only days buying years of memberships. I guess those days are over, now it's capitalize in any and every way. So I guess I'll stick with my print because in this economy paying double for the extra isn't in my budget.

Waste of Money. I've been a Car and Driver subscriber for over 30 years and this summer decided to purchase the ap so I could have access to the online info & and articles as well. The navigation isn't logical and after just the 2nd month I'm not able to access anything because it says my purchase has expired! Even before the "expiration" I had to "restore" my purchase several times because it wouldn't properly load. Complete waste of money and very frustrating. And, fyi, I gave the ap a 2 rating only because I couldn't bring myself to completely flunk my beloved C&D - it should actually be rated a 1...

Small Text, No Flash. The digital version used to feature stories in landscape orientation with attractive transitions between articles and pages and photo slide shows. The most recent version switched to portrait orientation and is essentially an uploaded version of the print magazine. It is page for page the same with no innovative use of the digital technology. It's as if they just uploaded a PDF. This format makes the text very small, especially on an iPad mini. I can't imagine trying to read it on your phone. Show some creativity!

Long download, couldn't install mag issue. Didn't work, not impressed. Installed most recent version 1.6.3. App installed fine, but had problems installing first issue. The issue took over 15 minutes to download on wifi. That's too long to wait for a single issue. Once the issue download was complete, it wouldn't even install. Would receive "unknown error" message. Had already spent too much time on trying to get it to work so I uninstalled. Flipboard is a much better app to read Car and Driver articles. Although it doesn't display the full mag issue, it does display current articles almost immediately.

A real magazine replacement. I had the Car and Driver Zino(?) electronic subscription but I didn't like it. This app has finally made the transition from paper to electronic media. This is actually slightly easier to read on the John than the paper magazine, and it's easier to take it on the go as well. I think I might let my paper subscription expire and go all digital with this app. The only draw back could be how they charge for the subscription. Currently there are only two free issues which I have already read, I hope i can get a yearly subscription for 20 or 30 bucks.

needs archive. needs easy and effective archive search to be worthwhile

No free access with paid subscription. I agree with the other 1-star reviews. Other magazines, such as Wired, Time, and Entertainment Weekly, offer free access to the iPad version when you pay for a print subscription. I bought my print subscription to support my daughter's school band fundraiser, thinking that I would get access to the digital version, but I'm not going to pay again for the same content. The digital issues and subscription are more expensive than the print subscription (I got a combo subscription for Car and Driver and Road & Track for the price of the Car and Driver digital subscription, along with offers to extend each subscription an additional year for $5).

One of the best magazine apps there is.. Reviewers who give one star because the download and install is slow for them don't seem to know that download and install time has nothing to do with the app, but everything to do with their network and their over-loaded iPad cache. The fact is, this app is really, really great. There is so much more in this than in the print magazine. Video, multi-level interactivity, slideshows, exploded graphics—more interactivity than the majority of magazine apps out there, and I download all sorts. All the issues are free at the time of this review. Don't believe the detractors.

Car and Driver. I really like the idea of electronic magazines but this implementation leaves a lot to be desired. There was an update last month that required all issues to be downloaded again before they could be viewed. The app usually crashes at least once every time I use it. Some features that say "click here for more" don't do anything. I have also had problems with new issues not being downloadable and my subscription not being recognized. I have never had a single issue download in the background even though I check my prefs each month and it is configured to do so. I would love to keep supporting the Car and Driver staff but this app makes it hard to do. On the plus side, the content of the magazine is great.

Wow...... I absolutely LOVE Car and Driver magazine, I downloaded this app when it first came out, and loved getting the free subscriptions. I would read whenever I was bored, and it provided great entertainment. I am a little disappointed that we now have to pay for either each subscription, by month, or for the whole year. And $20?!?!?! Now it doesn't seem like a lot, but that price is a bit ridiculous. I could get a 3 year subscription for cheaper than that!!! I am very disappointed, but I guess I'll have to stick to my same 6 issues until I hit the lottery or something.

Realist. I downloaded the app and I think it is great. It offers interactive features and color photos beyond what one would get in print. To all the people complaining about having existing subscriptions and having to pay $20. Seroiusly? You mean you paid $500-$700 for an Ipad and you are complaining about paying $19 for a magazine subscription? It cost $20 to take your lady/man to the movies and you are over that in 2 hours.

Worse iPad magazine app I have.. Sadly, one of my longtime favorite magazines makes this terrible app. The non-functioning slide shows, fuzzy non-retina text, horizontal only orientation, and general bugginess make for a very poor reading experience. Over the last few months I have realized I have never spent more than 10 minutes or so before closing the app in frustration. Gone are the days of reading it from cover to cover. If this does not improve soon, I will not continue to subscribe. Too bad, I'm a dedicated 20+ year subscriber and I don't want to step back to the paper version. Still like the content, but hate the app.

0 to Happy in 5 seconds. The luxury of having instant access to the latest issue is awesome. The interface is intuitive and the text and image layout is great. It's also convenient to be able to pull out my iPad for back-issues and not have to search around the house for my old dog-eared copies.

App itself is GREAT. I too find it appalling to be forced to purchase the iPad version of the magazine when you already paid for the paper subscription. HOWEVER I did not rate the app on the poor judgement of C&D but merely on the app itself. It is exceptionally laid out, downloads in the background and comes with extras (short avi clips of test drives, etc) By far one of the better iPad magazine apps!

Love it, hate the bugs. I love the magazine, I've been a subscriber since about 1995. But the app won't let me download magazines sometimes. It'll ask me to buy one even though I'm logged in. So I have to log out every time and log in again. Not a huge deal but annoying. Also, it would be nice if when I enlarge pics to read stats if I could still flip to the next page without having to minimize the window again. Also a small issue, but annoying if I have to do that on every page. I still love the magazine and will continue to buy it. But please try to address these if possible.

Not Quite 5 Stars. This app is actually pretty good. The graphics are great and it's easy to navigate. Magazines take time to download. That might be an issue for someone without a good broadband connection. This will be a great app if Car and Driver doesn't charge an arm and a leg for each magazine like some other publishers. Hint, charge less than the print version because your not having to incur print costs. Better yet, offer a yearly subscription at a reasonable price.

Great app - hope it keeps working. I too was having the problem of the download sticking at 46%. However today after having December paused for a few days and downloading other free issues, I decided to try the download again. It started working and finished downloading. If it keeps working, I'll keep my 4 star rating. If it causes problems again next month, I'm back to 1 star. Give your December download another try... Might be working again.

Update to earlier review. I submitted a review earlier and complained that I couldn't get the issues - after I paid for a subscription. Well, it took a few days (processing maybe?) but I was able to download both the July and August issues. I really like this app when I'm traveling because it frees up space in my checked luggage and it also offers video. I might suggest to some others that want Car & Driver to give them the app for free to wait for their subscription to end and then get this. It's a different form of media than the print version (and I see that Motor Trend is doing the same now). This is clearly superior.

broken magazine subscription model, don't use.. they are still trying to charge like its a new magazine that is on a newsstand. since ads pay for your magazine, please quit insulting the iphone/ipad/tablet world and quit charging full pop for a magazine that costs you nothing in digital format. especially back issues that will never get read. Perhaps a buck a month for new content and free for back issues. and yes, your on stand magazines will be gone in a couple of years so quit thinking your competing with the price of paying for paper, printing and delivery. its a new world. get used to it.

Terrible since early 2016 update. This magazine used to release each issue in a great format optimized for tablets. Unfortunately, in early 2016 the format was switched to what is essentially a simple PDF - none of the interactive graphics or articles advertised are left. The new issues since do not automatically scale or adapt properly for an iPad at all. At this rate I wouldn't recommend a digital subscription as many articles are basically illegible. Unless they change back to the original format soon, I'll be canceling my subscription soon as well.

Where’s the article?. Downloaded the app. Subscribed for a year. Opened the mag. Tapped on a article and all I see is white space.

I Love Car & Driver Magazine. Unfortunately this app can only be described as a sin against the excellent content and writing in the magazine. Someone without the knowledge of digital media decided the paper magazine was perfect and all they needed to do was make a "digital" copy of the magazine. If I'm going to pay for a digital subscription in addition to my regualr subscription then I expect to be able to highlight a word and get a definition or hyperlink to additional content. No such luck this is nothing more then a pixel by pixel recreation of the magazine. A complete waste of time unless you just dont want a paper copy.

Last Great Car Mag App. In the good old days, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Automobile offered beautiful interactive iOS apps that were far superior to their printed mags. It's the reason I bought an iPad and saved a lot of trees! Then the company that publishes the other 2 dumbed down their versions to be simple snapshots of the print pages that are non-interactive. Thank you C&D for staying in the 21st century and offering a magnificent experience. I didn't give 5 stars because there are often glitches in the updates that have to get fixed.

Continues to have worst page navigation experience ever. We buy magazines to read them and Car and Driver wants to ensure you have the worst page turning experience possible. Random switches from landscape to portrait is only the beginning. It is so easy to get locked into a page that you can't turn off it. It simply isn't worth getting a digital subscription to this magazine because the app continues to be abysmal. I am just letting my subscription expire unread at this point. Car and driver doesn't seem to listen to any of the ux complaints and still keeps shipping crappy ux.

How can something so simple be so bad. Really no aspirations of capability, but some of the most basic things that are there don't work properly. Subscriptions are confused with print, digital and iPad being treated separately. What that means is you can't get to anything easily and some of your purchases at all. The subscriptions are in no way integrated. You essentially email a help desk to have them try to fix. Try in my case means three strikes. I wanted to go digital to get early, reliable delivery. Hell, I'll let go of previous issues if it would just do that. Unable to get to latest issue eon do again. Avoid at all costs!

WARNING: DO NOT SUBSCRIBE!!!. I've been a subscriber since Sept. 2011, and I cannot restore any of the back issues under my subscription. Contacted the customer support, and they told me to use the buy function to restore the issues for free, only to find out that I was charged for 30 bucks for the issues I already paid!!!!!!!!! This is the worst magazine app on iTunes Store and its basically a scam, DO NOT SUBSCRIBE UNTIL THEY FIX IT or you are just wasting your money. C&D please fix this problem ASAP, I've been a subscriber for a long time and is about to stop subscribing to your magazine for good if you don't fix it soon!!

Your 15.0 release is broken. The only way to view the mag is to force it to download, then convert it to PDF.

Great app, but what about print customers?. The positive: Car and Driver did a wonderful job transforming their print magazine to the iPad. The interactivity enhances the articles rather than feeling gimmicky. For example, tapping on a timeline accompanying a piece on the history of a safety innovation pulls up pictures and additional information that would not have fit on the printed page. Overall a joy to read. The negative: Print subscribers have to pay again for an iPad issue, which I find really annoying. I have no problem paying for the magazine, I just have a problem paying again when I already did. What's more, iPad subscriptions are more than twice as expensive expensive as paper.

Good, but video player needs fixing. I only own a couple of magazine apps, and thus far I've enjoyed this one quite a bit. My one gripe, though...and this is a big one for me...is the embedded video player. Why in God's name must it be set up to play automatically when you start reading a story that has an embedded video? And why does it still play at volume when one has the sound off on their iPad? Please fix!!!

Love the printed version.... I have a retina iPad so there is no reason for this app to run as poorly as it does. I have tried to read the current issue over and over again only to have it crash so many times that i cant even read a single multi page article all the way through. Incredibly disappointing and honestly confusing based on the implementation of multimedia and animations being comparatively limited compared to popular mechanics and other magazines. As a subscriber to the print version for over a decade this implementation is poor enough that i feel swindled and less likely to subscribe again. I feel swindled not because of a initial poor release that often happens when dipping your toes in a new medium, but rather the constant inability to address customer complaints about the bugginess of the app that indicates that Hearst does not care about their customers. I honestly rarely rate apps poorly, and do so in the hope that they will get their act together.

One of the worst iPad apps ever. Where to start? I gave up my print subscription to this and to its cousin Road & Track in order to cut down on paper and for the convenience of toting one iPad rather than several magazines. Oops. Each new issue requires deleting the app, then reinstalling, relogging in, then a step called "restoring purchases" After all that, you download the issues...or so you think. What you download are the cover and several crystal clear adds. The actual content doesn't download until you turn to the page to read it. If, heaven forbid, you're on a plane with bog slow internet, or someplace where you have no connection, then you have no magazine to read. UPDATE: Now it's even worse. App opens briefly, then closes. Can't even read the ads now. UPDATE: Finally got the app to stabilize after opening and downloading the current issue 8 times in rapid succession. then 2 pages into the first article, a pop-up asks me to rate the app. couldn't resist. If my employees designed a product like this, I would fire them.

Wait a month ?. When you buy the annual subscription you have to wait 1 month for C&D to do what ??? This is 2011 guys and not 1960 with Rolodex paperwork, everything is digital ! Get your subscription system in order please before you launch an app. Apple, I thought you had quality control for the 30% you take from your vendors. Ps. An online version 40% more expensive than a paper version ? No switching between paper subscription or digital ? Love the app, hate the rules and admin delays. Grow up if you want to live in this digital world.

Theft. Today, I bought the Car & Driver iPad app, decided to download the February 2013 issue of Car & Driver, confirmed my in-app purchase for $4.99, and have found that Car & Driver has taken my money, and in return, have given me absolutely nothing. I have gotten no notice of it downloading, and the only thing I have noticed was that the button to buy the issue turned grey. I did all possible things. I tried restoring the information using the "Missing Issues" button, and tried what the app claimed was downloading the issue again. No progress. Do not buy this app. Ok, actually maybe buy this app. I have sent an email stating the problem to car and driver, and they have fixed the problem for me, however, I have run into another problem in which the February 2013 issue download status remains at "0% pending..." Hopefully, Car & Driver will fix this issue as easily as they fixed the last one. I would rate this app two and one half stars if I could.

Nice words to drive by. When I started reading CD it was on the john. I was just checking emails and I noticed a reminder to up date an app so I did. Why not got nothing else to do but you know what. Long and behold CD free magazine was downloaded. The writing of the article about the Corvette stingray and Ferrari Testarossa was great. The bowl ring on the thigh was worth it I recommend a read.

Stick with print. I have been a subscriber to Car and Driver for over 15 years and plan to continue to be loyal. However I will be canceling my on line subscription due to the difficulty I have in navigating the app. C&D does an admirable job trying to explain how to get around in the thing but I just want to read the mag not explore new ways of flipping and turning my iPad. Consider how patient and open you are when downloading and switching to the app from paper. My 16 year old would probably enjoy this version just fine but as an old dude of 46 I just need to stick with print!

Paying for print subscription-not getting. Have not received March, April. Have tried everything to resolve.

LAAAAMMMME!!! Only because the support is nonexistent.. The lack of support for this app is ridiculous. The 'app support' button does not allow you to directly contact the developer. Instead, it takes you to the Car and Driver webpage where the support information there, in turn, directs you to Zinio support, which is not the developer of this app. If you are bored enough to read the comments on the bottom of that page, you will see a post by someone who says is part of the development team. I emailed him a week ago and have not heard from him yet. AND... as a subscriber, I can download every issue available except for the July issue where I'm supposed to pay $4.99... really??? Awesome, app, crappy support. Way to soil a good magazine's name. Am I the only one who had to download every issue again after updating to iOS5? Since the issues don't sync, can they be backed up so I can read them when I eventually kill my subscription... whenever I figure out how to do that. I'd ask support, but they don't exist.
