Falling Fruit App Description & Overview

What is falling fruit app? Falling Fruit is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Boulder, Colorado, USA. All proceeds from sales of our mobile app help pay to keep our servers and website online. Purchasing the app is itself a tax deductible donation, and we greatly appreciate your support in keeping Falling Fruit online!

Our global map of edible plants is not the first of its kind, but it aspires to be the world's most comprehensive. While our users contribute locations of their own, we comb the internet for pre-existing knowledge, seeking to unite the efforts of foragers, foresters, and freegans everywhere. Imported datasets range from small neighborhood foraging maps to vast professionally-compiled tree inventories. So far, this amounts to over 1,200 different edible types (most, but not all, plant species) distributed over nearly one million locations. Beyond the cultivated and commonplace to long-forgotten native plants and the exotic flavors of foreign plants, foraging in your neighborhood is a journey through time and across cultures.

Falling Fruit is not associated with Fallen Fruit. Fallen Fruit can be found at fallenfruit.org.

App won’t allow you to Register. The app requires you to register, but then will not allow you to sign in

Works well. It’s got some minor bugs and there’s plenty of room for improvement, but it does what it needs to do! I’m really enjoying using it and contributing to it.

Stuck loading. Cool concept, but the app is unusable. I have a strong internet connection but the app is stuck loading. I’ve tried a few different times this past week, but same deal, the map is stuck loading Boulder CO. Oh well, it was only a dollar.

Catch Us. We are flying through this country foraging for frinedly fruits and un-empty dumpsters. But catch us because this app needs an update. To be able to find location of user using a better map service, or at least to fill the screen of recent phone screens with bigger format/screen size. Thank you, we are falling

Registration issues. I just downloaded the app after finding out more about the organization. I was hopeful that it would work but I am having issues registering. It prompts me to send a confirmation but I still have not received one after multiple attempts. The idea of the app was nice but looks like I just made a $2 donation.

App is a mess. I just paid for the app and registered but it’s telling me that I have the wrong password and also that the email address is taken. It is taken by me and it’s the right password, but there seems to be no way out of this. I can’t even open the app.

Don't buy. Doesn't work - this is obviously not a maintained app. I bought it years ago and it has never consistently displayed listings and navigating the app is frustrating. Don't waste your money.

Can’t even log in. The log in screen glitches every single time. I bought the app on accident and now I DEFINITELY regret it. It can’t find my account even though I just made it and it crashes constantly.

Aesthetically pleasing, needs some improvement. I am so happy that an app has been created to promote easy foraging in my town! Thank you for turning this great idea into reality. It's a pretty app, but it needs a couple fixes. First, it would be nice if you could click the pin point and it would say what is there. Second, the "edible type" feature does not feature any drop down menu (there may be a glitch here). Otherwise keep up the good work, and I will continue to add to the database!

Five Stars for Potential. I’m really looking forward to exploring and adding entries. I know there are many untapped locations in my area. *Is there any way to filter/remove “dumpster” entries? I can’t tell of they’re there as a joke, but they distract from the purpose of this awesome app.

Unusable. This app is entirely unusable. Location services are nonfunctional, and it won’t even refresh to my location when typed in. Resets to Boulder Colorado, and doesn’t even show their data. Essentially the only thing I can do in this app is open it. Not to mention everything listed in my area on the website was planted in 1991? My large metro area landscape has changed in that time period. Great concept but poorly executed.

Doesn’t work on my iPhone 6s. This is a great idea, but when I try to use it, often times my keyboard doesn’t come up to type anything in. I was going to list my loquat trees for foragers, butI can’t. Maybe I’ll try it on my computer next time my loquats are ripe.

Confirmation not working. Really interested in this app but it is not allowing me to sign up. It seems that the confirmation button won't work. Would be awesome if this could get resolved seeing that I have spent the money for the app

Was skeptical to download bc of reviews. App works well now!

Great concept but app is nearly unusable. Registration is weird because it stops you from retyping the password in any field after you make a mistake once. Then when you finally get in, the ability to filter fruit types just plain does not work. Also despite the name, people have submitted a ton of non-edible trees! So I see hits all over my neighborhood, but on closer inspection they are actually an oak, Madrone, dogwood, hawthorn or any number of other trees that are obviously not fruit and, with the exception of acorns if you are extremely desperate, not even edible. Considering that this app costs money, I was expecting it to actually do the basic things it says. But the addition of non-fruit trees that cannot be filtered separately from fruit trees makes it worse than useless.

Too buggy to function. This app may have worked at some point but it’s broken now.

Worst app I cancelled and they are still charging. Be careful when purchasing this app I had cancelled my subscription on the website because you won’t find it on your phone if you have Apple ID and it said they cancelled it but I never received a conformation email and now I’m getting charged for this app that doesn’t even work. I feel like this is a scam and they just trying to take peoples money. I will be contacting my bank and whoever else I need to get this solved quickly.

Doesn’t work. UPDATE-Having attempted to use the app more, indeed it has many flaws that make it pretty useless :-c Original thoughts= Began using this app on Sep 25, 2021. Due to the well-written negative reviews I was hesitant to buy the app, but I really wanted to support the concept so I figured 4$ was worth the risk. Fortunately, SO FAR, everything is working as intended. The initial registration email took a bit longer to arrive than modern expectations allow patience for but it did arrive within the hour and I signed into the app without issue. The map content, for me living in a densely populated city, could leave something to be desired, but that isn’t the app’s fault since it’s user sourced content-if you want the app to have UTD local content, don’t complain others haven’t served it to you; get out there and participate. The content is only as good as we make it!

Can’t sign in. Unable to sign in, create account, or use passwords function for iPhone.

Outdated information - waste of $4. Ugh. Wish I could get my money back on this one - what a waste of space. All of the listings in my area were dated 5–8 years ago! Idea is excellent, but this is clearly a project that lost its momentum a while ago.

Nope andddd Nope. Literally the most useless thing I have used in a long time. - longest...or just wont... load - list view won’t show you the location - it is actually called falling fruit but 90% of the markers are just trees... everyday trees. Why would I ever need to know where to go to look at a tree? - search for edible options has no categories but instead genus listings... does anyone know how many trees have the name cherry in them. - ooh and the edible list search results are non-edibles - registration is a nightmare. Why do I need a password when I have the app? Is someone going to hack my falling fruit app to find normal trees? Are these people elves?

Works…perfectly?. Thw previous reviews had me questioning whether this was worth trying…but it works perfectly? Registration email was sent instantly and I logged in without trouble. I’m now looking at about 100 dots on the map within blocks of my home (I might be a slight outlier given my urban setting). Thank you Falling Fruit!

No confirmation email ☹️. As stated by others, I paid, signed up, but received no confirmation email so could access the app. I messaged them via Facebook. Got a quick response and resolution. Great concept and good service. Happy to be part of this community!

5 stars for a great idea. Needs a little fixing As soon as you're finished that, how about a falling nuts site! Walnuts, pecans, acorns, etc When we lived in Texas we had a Pecan tree in our yard that we never had time to pick because we were so busy with our jobs, and people will stop by and ask if they could pick pecans, and we always said yes! They took several bushels of Pecans out of one tree that was less than 25 feet tall!

Unmaintained. Barely works. Used to be a great app, but the latest version is 3+ years old and doesn’t seem to work with newer devices. Specifically, when tapping into a text entry field, the on-screen keyboard doesn’t pop up. :(

Great App :: Powerful Tool for Botanical Discovery. Hey y'all, thank you SO MUCH for developing this great interface for people around the world to share knowledge about discovering the great green growing world around us. Tracking the edibles in urban landscapes brings up an idea that there may be scarcity if everyone knows...and also the opportunity for us to become aware that we can plant edible landscapes into our communities. It is a cause worth working and fighting for. Fruit trees on every corner. This app is has an incredibly easy-to-use interface that is functional from the get-go. No learning curve here. I just wish there was a way to edit/delete location on a pin I dropped in the wrong place, or, for example if a developer bulldozes the incredible elderberry grove I shared in the past. I would love to see that addition.

Working great!. I was skeptical to download based on previous reviews but a few recent reviews were positive so I went ahead and bought the app. It’s working great! You can search for specific edibles in your area. I did not attempt to edit a point or create a new log yet though. Overall, worth the $2. Would be great to get more crowd sourced data!

Sorry, I don’t believe in registering for apps like this. I just want to use this app, not share information. I hate it when apps that are designed to provide information, require registering with email info.

This app is a joke. Not worth a penny.

Very slow and buggy. Frequently crashes and fails to find my location.

So much promise. But severely lacking. You can tell this app is someone’s side hobby. Someone with limited app development skills. Super bugged, extremely tedious. Always resets to Boulder Colorado upon opening. Has a filter by fruit search that never works so there are often dozens of tags that you have to click on to find your fruit of interest and even when you find something, you can’t save that tag for future reference. Almost not useful features. I would hope that since it’s a paid app, some of that money would go into development. Overall a great concept that is unique and in need, but barely usable due to poor app design.

Regrettable execution. I have to agree with the folks below, the combination of multiple inedible trees and the general lack of information makes this app fairly useless.

Doesn’t work. App won’t work. Can’t register or sign in successfully. I need a refund for this!

App does not open. I never received an email for registration so am unable to even try the app. This app appears to be no longer maintained

Basic fixes would make this worth using. What I’d really like is to be able log in. For some reason, I can hardly make the app recognize when I click on the login and password fields. Come on. Paid $3.99 to struggle to even sign up. That one fix will make up for so much. Please do it and then I’ll update my review. A lot people will continue to hate on this app and feel cheated when it’s really a super cool thing to have!

It says $3.99 but I was charged $12 ! AND the app will not let me register!!. After paying the $3.99( which turned out to be almost $12!!!!! NOT $3.99!) Then I try to register and keep getting an error message! Saying HTML /oops! I would like a refund!

Registration?. Tried to register and got no confirmation email. Cannot open or use a paid app. Not a happy camper. Fix this issue. Or at least make it easier to contact support for help. Really want my money back.

Don’t Bother. Super buggy, even down to sign in, not sure if anyone ‘really’ uses it.

Some issues. The app seems to lock up when taking pictures and have problems with GPS even though I am outside with no GPS issues in other apps. Also needs ability to add picture from camera roll rather than just active picture taking. No updates for 3 years?

Great! (after creating account via web browser). Based on previous reviews (thanks, everyone!), I first created my account view web browser and did the email confirmation. Then I downloaded the app and entered my account info. So far, everything is working great. I am really excited about summer forays around town, working with both Falling Fruit and Litterati! (I gave 5 stars to encourage folks to try again. Maybe create a different account via web browser. Then the app should be useable.)

Great start. Based on the fact that this is a beta it is Fantastic. I was able to add a point to the map and I was able to explore trees in my neighborhood. There are definitely a few bugs to work out. When I brought up the left menu when I was in list mode had a hard time getting back to the map mode.

Can’t log in. I paid $3.99 for this app and it won’t even let me in past log in 💔 I could’ve bought some spinach.

Still waiting…. Still waiting to receive the email so I can then be able to log in. Paid $1.99 for the app a couple hours ago now.

App is faulty. I was so excited about the potential of this app so you can imagine my disappointment that I cannot even use it. I signed up as instructed and clicked the Send Confirmation button and I waited. And waited. And am still waiting a day later. I tried to sign in but it doesn't recognize my email address since I never got the confirmation email. I tried to re-register but it won't let me due to the fact that my email address has already been used. I went on App Support and tried 5 times to have the confirmation re-sent. All to no avail. And what it the most disappointing aspect is that there is no way to even use the App without completing registration. Very disappointing.

Charges. I’m a little confused as to why I am getting charged another 1.99 when app stated 5.99 one time fee? And how or where do I cancel if this is in fact a subscription?!

Doesn’t work. Don’t waste your time or money, I have not been able to use the app at all since I got it. The map always starts in boulder Colorado but it NEVER loads. I’m not even able to see the fruit trees in boulder.

Finicky but Still Fantastic!!. After seeing the previous reviews I was a little hesitant on purchasing the app but I have not regretted it once! It is a game changer for any food forager out there and I’ve already recommended this app to friends. It’s great to contribute harvest spots and to be connected to a greater network of fellow food foragers. There’s some glitches to work out but you figure out how to handle the app pretty quick. Hope this helps!

doesn't work. something went wrong during registration, so i could never open it. interesting idea, but useless if it doesn't open.

App not working. Hello- the app is not working nor the host website for app help. I would like to get my money back from this purchase please.

Dumpsters. This app slows people to list good dumpsters to find food! Discussing!

Love the concept, hate the app. I have been using Falling Fruit for years and it is fabulous, except I cant add any new things to the map in Australia. I’ve tried on three separate occasions to add an olive tree and it won’t show up on the map. Wish it would work properly so I could use it as intended!

Not impressed. Didn't think I was signing up for dumpster locations for free 'food' also thought it was fruit trees on common land not in people's front yards. Isn't that stealing ?

Don’t waste your money. App doesn’t load at all, whether full coverage or not. Should have read previous reviews before buying. Waste of money. Don’t bother with this one.

Broken App. This app must no longer be supported or maintained because I see now it hasn’t been updated for 6 years. When I open it it just says “loading” and it never loads and nothing happens and you can’t do anything or click on anything. It really should not be for sale since it is not functional.

Doesn’t work. Claims that GPS or network signal is weak when it’s not, and so never loads. Disappointing, clearly no longer maintained by developers, don’t buy it.

Great resource, very user friendlyy. Really useful. My only gripe is that every time you zoom in or out the location tags have to reload themselves - presumably chewing through both data and battery unnecessarily.

Waste of money. Great idea but so poorly executed I can't believe I wasted $7 on this. Can't search by fruit type and if you do eventually find what you're after in the list (as the clickable map is terrible) you can't actually go to its location you can only see that it's X distance from you!! Can't save any finds in your favourites to come back and check on. Clunky and awful and I wish I'd not wasted my money.

Love this app. This is a great app I love using it when ever I am in a new area to see what's around just wish it had a feature where you could load directions to a location via google maps or some other gps type app!

this app is garbage. learn to code

Excellent app. App was quick to respond to email regarding lack of receiving confirmation email. I can now check for snacks wherever I am!

Map not working. Very Bad, Map display not even working! Waste of money!

Falling fruit. Don’t bother, the free version works better. This app does not work AT ALL! Don’t waste your money!

Purchased but no account support. I purchased the app and attempted to create an account. The app wants me to verify my email before it will let me log in, but it will not send the verification email. I am locked out.

Horrid! Do not buy!. I should have listened and not bought this app. It glitches constantly. I can’t register. I can’t sign in.not one iota of this app works. Thanks for robbing me of four bucks. Wish I could turn you in for faking an app, and taking my money. Do not buy! I’m not just one of those angry people complaining about something small, with a chip on my shoulder, that you should ignore. If you download the same thing will happen to you. Zero stars for this app. Wish I could give a negative four stars for the four bucks I’m out.

Not worth 99 cents. After repeated attempts to get the app map to stay on my California coastal location it returned to Boulder, Colorado so it’s not working well not intuitive. By contrast, the Savage Kitchen app located me correctly right away. So, after typing in my full address and zip code numerous times to force the map to my location, I noted zero entries for local plants, so I tried entering a plant and the “take a photo “ button was dead, so unable to take photo of plant. Can I get a refund of my 99 cents?

Login broken. Login/account creation broken— -verification email never arrives -subsequent attempts to register state that email address is taken -password recovery email (on web) never arrives (and yes, that includes "checking my spam folder"—thx)

Fun but boring. First yea I am the first 2 write a review. This game is fun 4 the first 10 minutes then it gets really boring then u end up deleting the game :(

Phenomenal. This update makes the app much more stable. This app is my favorite app of all apps. It reveals to you a hidden world of food growing all around you! It's like a super power. And I love that it's a collaboration between everyone. Essential app.

Great content, app can be improved. I love the purpose of the app, and the basic features are there, but there are some more features that would be great. Thank you for compiling so much data on trees, and for making a smartphone app. I love how users can review other trees, noting their quality, abundance of harvest, and the dates that they flower, fruit, and ripen. I would like to see the developers add: - Feature to search for types of trees nearby, or to filter the map by type of trees, for example showing only mulberry trees on the map. - Feature to click on a tree in the list mode, and see that tree on the map. Without this feature it is hard to find the location of a tree in the list mode. - Feature to mark favorite trees and add trees to lists (think playlists)
