Crashing. I like the idea a lot but every time I try to delete a song it crashes and won't delete. Also wont load and play any songs but the first test song. Need some fix here.

Smart & Easy. What a great app. You have got everything at your fingertips. Easy to record your music, edit and play what you have already recorded. What a great idea for the iPad, you have your music just where you need it , in your hand at your fingertips.

I love this app!. As a songwriter, I use this app for capturing ideas on the go. I would love to see more non-diatonic chords (specifically the major III)! A better way to structure songs would be nice to (verse, chorus sections). But for creating progressions on the go, this is the app for that!!

Needs suspended chords. Really great app. The style is perfect for how I compose music but when I get into a groove on a song I find the lack of suspended chords kind of limiting. If this could be added as a mod button I would totally bump this to 5 stars. Great app. Totally worth the price. :) Another suggestion. If you were to make the ui landscape you could allow for easier pressing mod buttons and chords. It would give you more room to play with. Keep up the good work.

Love it!. I stumbled across this by misspelling a search term. I thought this was dumb since I play piano guitar bass drums etc. However curiosity got the best of me and I'm glad it did. I've been playing my favorite tunes on my iPhone! Please hurry with the voice recorder. I'll pay for the upgrade. I'll even pay more for the ability to edit the song in the chords used section and please please please add additional chords, the ability to modulate, and minor keys. I can use relative majors for minor keys but I'd rather not. I like this app. I'm serious about being willing...no...happy to pay for the additions listed. Hello simple songwriter, goodbye free time!

I wish I could export songs. Overall very useful app, but I can't export what I write.

Very nice app. This app is a go to during the songwriting process! Last weekend I pulled up a song I had created a year ago that never really seemed to work. I was in the middle of trying to hash out a rewrite of the first verse when in frustration, I pulled out this app, hit the key I was in and found chords that worked and more importantly, made the song better. I was inspired to rewrite a verse melody for the good of a song. I know this is simple music theory, but having a quick interface that you can start hitting chords that work together while in the heat of a song writing moment is a godsend.

Great Way to Learn & Create. When I am standing in line or on the bus and get a musical idea, I use this app to quickly play through the chords I think may work and this helps me change a progression or get more ideas. This is easy to use and cannot image why anyone would not love this app as much as me. Keep Playing - Keep Learning

Cumbersome. Cumbersome and quirky at best! I think some of these reviews must be insider... I’m a Pro w/ ProTools studio and I make my living in music. By the time you get a short idea down your inspiration will be gone. There is no count off for recording- the 1st metronome sound is “it”. I resorted to leaving a bar up front. That’s works…. there are no directions or manual for the Simple Songwriter. I think it’s called Simple due to the fact that it’s nearly impossible to do what you need to do. The chord choices are decent (Full diatonic chord scale with an added b7 and b3 chord in Major) But it’d be nice to have a 2nd page of the parallel minor chords, or something extra just because those are usually the cool chords. Still it’s cool as is… What really bothers me is after you get an idea down there is no punching in to continue the song. So if you recorded a cool verse idea you have to start a new song in order to carry on. Now this morning all my songs are jumbled together. (they all play at once….) Lame!

Wow I was really impressed!. I love it! I think that this was an ingenious idea for an app. It could be better though. I think that it would be amazing If suspended chords and the inversions of 7th chords were added. I also agree with previous suggestions that a landscape GUI would be necessary for more space for addition features. Other than that it is a beautifully coded app and I use it everyday. Thank you for such a useful and well thought out application!

Any updates or support coming?. I have loved this app for years and will give full five stars if they will continue to support. It no longer makes any sound. I haven’t found any app that does what this can do so I hope they update it soon!!

Useful educational tool for me. It is very helpful in learning Nashville Number system with chords in each key

Extremely useful. I've arrived at many chord progressions that I've used in compositions by using SSW. My only complaint is that I can't find anything with all of the same exact functionality for my PC.

Crap, won’t save song. Worthless. I bought this app a few years ago and it’s always been like this. I thought maybe one day they would fix it, nope. Can’t save anything, worthless. I want my money back.

Excellent. Amazing sound and beautiful combinations! Maybe other instruments and plain notes instead of just chords could make this app into the top tens in....a month? It would be worth 3 times as much at least!

Great potential...quantize/phrase record!. This app has been extremly useful. Things I would like to see from it: The ability for basic quantizing to the the metronome. Sometimes you get ahead or behind on your taps. It would be nice to have the option for it to fall within some sort of grid. Recordings done in phrases. Rather than have to tap a whole song, give the option of recording a verse, chorus, bridge, etc. Then provide the option of putting phrases together in whatever order we see fit. Maybe also include just a simple powerchord chord option for simple guitar players to get a more root note approach for writing.. This is a great app with great potential for scratch ideas...

Limited interface. Only 9 chords available at one time.. would be nice to have a screen of all chords one can scroll down and sample.

No minor keys!. Beware no minor keys.. Huge oversight & not worth the money!

Great app. Love this app helps me record ideas everywhere I go... One thing I am entirely bummed out about is that I can't record lyrics to the music. One of the most important things too most songwriting is lyrics and would have to be fairly simple to add into this app... Will totally be worth it and a 5 star app once that is added on to the program... Can you please please please add a lyrics tab?

Great App. Love it! Perfect for when I get stuck and need to find a chord or work out a quick melody idea.

Great app!. I've already come up with progressions for my next two songs using it. Perfect for brainstorming while at work or on the go. Get this app if you are a songwriter and ever experience writers' block. (Bonus: Devs replied positively within 1 day to an email I sent regarding the high quality sound upgrade.)

Negative reviewers are crazy...Awesome App. I never write reviews, but this app is beyond "hopefully useful"...it's endless inspiration. In fact, selfishly, I didn't even want to write the review because it's one of those secrets you'd like to keep to yourself - but these guys deserve props. The bad reviews are complaining about sound quality, lack of instruments, lack of chords (which is just someone who doesn't understand scales)...they clearly don't get the concept, and aren't using it for it's intended purpose. If you're a songwriter, run...don't walk, to purchase this app. Great concept, and well executed. Developers - as a few other reviewers have mentioned, the ability to record a vocal track in combination would absolutely take this to the next level - and would be worthy of a $10 "pro" version. It would truly be a portable writing solution that way - as this is only tackling half the process. Please, please consider adding that as part of the next sprint (or as a pro version)...you'd be bringing a ton of good music into this world (and that's not a bad life goal!).

Needs minor keys. It is a good start but needs to have minor keys to be fully useful for sketching ideas.

Potentially the most important app a songwriter could have, except.... This would be my most used app during the initial songwriting process, except that you can't specify other specific chord voicing for each pad. And it needs this desparately. I need an F# sus4 chord in my progression. No can do... Call it manual mode so you can go outside the circle of fifths and it'd be like having an octopad full of self-chosen chords. That would be so useful it'd be beyond ridiculous. PLEASE do this. It's a 5star app with that capability.

#1 App on my phone. For any musician this tool is invaluable, I am amazed how quickly I can tap out a song then change the key/tempo to my liking. Not sure if I agree with a previous user about the 7th chords, I'm pretty sure the V chord is dominant, which seems correct to me. Anyway great app well worth the 2 bucks.

Great Start. Helpful app to tap out some chords with the melody in my head when I'm not around my instruments. Needs: 1) tap tempo. I want to at least be able to hear the tempo before recording. 2) exporting feature. I want to send an audio file by SMS or email. Also, great feature to record through the microphone while recording chords. But I have two saved files and they both use the last microphone audio file, so not sure what went wrong there, but excellent start nonetheless.

Worth it... But.. Still new and still needs some tweeking to make it more simple and less complex. But still? Worth the money. And any yahoo that says this app is usless is not very inclined music wise and just likes to hit buttons to hear the noise they make. Give this app the respect it deserves and needs so that they will provide better upgrades later on. In short? Get this!

The Review. I love this app, works great and makes me creat songs differently. The only thing I do not like is I cannot save and export the songs and it is not audiobus supported.

Songwriter's Dream. Man, this program is a MUST HAVE for any real songwriter. Being able to hear the composition and figure out where the song is going is key. Yes the sounds aren't the best quality, but if you want a piano then buy another app. If you want to compose then look no further. I'm sure other software developers will try to steal the idea of this app. I give it five stars because it deserves it. One suggestion would be to add a vocal track so you can record your words also.

Useful!. If you are looking for an app that will play chords reliably at the touch of a finger this is one. There appears to be zero latency on this app. You touch and it plays. You don't feel lagged and you can concentrate on what you are playing. The modifier buttons are easy to get used to and don't fuddle the fingers. I wouldn't mind a gentler sounding piano but the one offered is fine. Bottom line is that this really is a useful app and it's the first instrument app I don't regret buying. Use it!

Helpful with chord ideas. Love the app. When I need ideas on chord progressions for new material on the go or if I need to transpose to a new key and transcribe on the fly this app is my go to.

It's worth the money. While there are some things missing, you can't expect to get it all from an app on your iPhone or itouch. This is a great app well worth the money helps with simple songwriting. I also can't wait for their guitar version.

Awesome when it works. When this app works, it is the single most helpful songwriting app I’ve found. However, MANY times I will record something only to have the app quit and not save what I recorded. I would pay a lot to have a better working version of this app.

Demystifying songwriting. I highly recommend this app to my songwriting students. It really facilitates the process and allows you to easily customize and alter suggestions given to your own taste. Well done!

Musicians new best friend!. There are a lot of musical toys on the app store, but this one might be most useful for letting a musician write harmonies and melodies. The sounds are nice and the interface is simple. I only wish I could control the balance of recorded sounds and the midi chords and/or export audio via audio copy.

Awesome when it works but deletes my songs all the time!. This app is awesome but it seems to lack support. When it works, it is an awesome app for songwriting. One major issue that I am discovering is that it continually deletes my songs! The whole point of the office so that you can quickly jot down some cord progressions for him some tunes for later and if it cannot save those simple things, It's pretty much useless. When I go to load an old song, it does not load any of my songs even though it shows that there is a file that is saved. If the developer would spend a little time working on this app and making sure that songs are saving properly, I would definitely change my review to a 5. One other thing that is extremely annoying is when you close the app in return to the app, it brings you back to the home screen where you have to either resume a song or start a new song. They need to change that as soon as possible as well.

Wow!. I've been a songwriter for a while now, and on non gigging trips and vacations, I'm often inspired to write. My wife is tolerant since this is how I make my living, but she hates me bringing digital recorders, or Pearlcorders and my late son's beginner half size guitar to try and record what I've hammered out to go with the lyrics I just wrote... This app is a solid WOW! Now I can play with melodies and chorus' without disturbing anyone, record the result, and with the lyrics stored in Notes, get home with a finished song... Would I like it to do more? Sure, but for what I just paid I know I've gotten a deal! I'm gonna be first in line if yup go with a Pro Version as well... Kudos!

Great app. Very easy to use

My most used app. I love this thing. I would like to be able to loop what I recorded, listen to the click with the recording, and adjust the tempo while it's playing back. Other then that it's perfect! My song writing is more streamlined, I write way more songs now, I enjoy song writing more. This is a wonderful app for anybody even remotely musically inclined.

Good, not great. I like this app, but there are a few things I really wish they'd change: I wish the 'new song' button would take me to the screen where you choose the key instead of the default C key screen. Also, I wish I could choose the chords that I wanted to use for a particular song. Nothing too complicated, I'd just like to be able to throw in a II or a iv chord here and there. Speaking of Roman numerals, it would be cool if I could choose to use them instead of just the Arabic numerals. Another reviewer mentioned that they wish you could select minor tonality, and I agree this would be a big improvement, since you miss out on altered harmony when just using the relative major key. Lastly, almost half the time I try to use it it won't make sound. My phone is new, yes the volume is up, so what's going on?

Awesome!. I use this for my students to understand how chord progressions work. It's easier for then to hear how a song creation will sound and will add in more complicated stuff because they want the result of what they played on this app. Then they are more motivated to learn the chords. It deserves 5 stars if they integrate minor keys..

Simple and fun (and educational). I know a bit of music theory, but not enough to easily figure out chord progressions for a new song. This app is very simple to use, and makes it easy to choose chords that work together. You can choose the key you want, and make a song that sounds good in a few seconds. Right now, you only get piano chords sounds, but the developer says he may add guitar sounds in the future. You don't need this app if you're an expert, but it's great for beginners. A very nice app.

Seriously?. This is the single worst music app I have used on the iPhone. It's incredibly basic and allows for zero customization. The only option given is to change the key, which only makes the existing 9 notes higher or lower accordingly. Overall it is simple to use but very specialized to a small frame of how certain individuals believe a "pop punk" song is formed. Overall, an absolute waste of 2 dollars!

Great idea!. I love the basic concept, but for those of us who compose on guitar, the piano just doesn't seem to translate very well. Would definitley be a five star program if they would add a guitar option. Add a few strum patterns and you've really got something! A great way to formulate song ideas when you're on the go.

Great app for fleshing out a new song. Really nice app that has a lot of potential and very useful for fleshing out a new song. I would really love to see the chords be exportable in some capacity via the iTunes file sharing: MIDI file would be great! or some sort of list / chord names / notes. I am enjoying this.

Not worth. I didn't think this is worth the money

Definitely useful. I'm an experienced musician but found it particularly useful for working out songs from memory and changing key. Most musicians would already know the theory but this is very convenient for the lazy. Novice musicians can quickly work out songs without much theoretical knowledge but they will quickly get to know relative chords in various keys by using it. Its good fun just playing it. I recommend the next version should include the ability to record melody line as well.

Great tool!. This app has made my song writing so easy! The chord combinations are great and it takes seconds to record. No issues on my touch either

Excellent. I am average at playing guitar. This really helps put a song idea together by hearing something you like then taking it to the guitar to learn. Really simple, complete app. Love it

Awesome but has a Metronome glitch. This has the potential to be a very useful app. It's great! A few of things need to be added like an editor for the chord list so you can alter the song without having to re-record, a loop function and the metronome needs other time signatures (3/4 time at the very least). There are a couple of bugs/glitches like the cancel button in the clear song screen doesn't work and you must MAKE SURE YOUR VOLUME IS SET TO MAX DURING INSTALLATION otherwise the metronome won't work.either.

Five Star Quality!. This app is of five star quality! The app is just awesome and it is incredible how easy it is to create amazing sounds! When I sent a contact form to them via email they replied in about two hours!!! Now that is great service! If you are considering purchasing this app I say definitely do; it is more than worth the money! Thankyou for this great app! 

Well worth it. This is a well built app, easy to work out yourself, but has a great tutorial vid you can watch to explain the features. This makes an excellent song sketch pad, and is helping me understand the music theory behind the ideas I come up with, I find this quite valuable. I haven't tried the Guitar version, but I'm definitely interested after my experiences with simple songwriter.

Review. This app is simple yet very effective tool for songwriters to record melodies and frames for songs and also to enhance existing works and song starts by adding different chord structures demonstrated within this application. A must have for songwriters.

Really good. It would be good to be able to delete chords in the side panel , and interchange them, move them about, like Chordbot , and Suggester, ?? Also airdrop export.

One of my Favourite apps. This little gem is great for songwriting. I find it especially usefull for finding changes to chords I already have. Yes a loop feature would be great. What I would like though is the ability to choose more chords. Instead of inv2 you could have "select your own"? Anyway keep up the great work. Love it! Thankyou!

Good app but some suggestions. Good app. Works well. 1. Why can't I set a minor key? 2. If I can't set a minor key at least let me customize and pick the 9 chords I have access to.

It seems to play a mix of all the songs I’ve recorded when I load a song. I like this app. But you’ve got to sort these problems out.] On my way to teach a songwriting workshop this morning and thought, “I wonder if there’s a decent songwriting app?” This brilliant app is perfect for my workshop. It helps to illustrate how simple songwriting can be. By showing my students the basic chord progressions used in today’s country, rock and pop songs, then demonstrating how easily a song can be created on the app, I’ve completely demystified the songwriting process. A fantastic tool for my students and one that I’ll be using myself from now on. Thanks!

A Catalyst for the Creative Process. A very useful little tool for songwriting. Many have commented that it helps on the road, which is true. I also find it useful when I'm stuck creatively with the guitar on my lap, or trying hard not to 'write the same song' again! Road trip. Good for when you are on the road. Only downside is it gives you set chords. Sometimes you would like a certain chord... But it's not there.

It's okay..... Very nice app, but It would be SO much better and worth the money if we can pick specific notes for piano and vocal. I'll change my writing if you add this. Not too happy, but it's still a nice app.

Eh. It's alright, but I think it needs more chords for you to choose from per key. Maybe like four of each, instead of just 3. Or maybe have that be customizable. Like, want a major key, up beat happy song? You got 3-5 chords, and that's all! Over all, it just needs a little more.

Love it. It has the chord numbers as well which makes it worth while.

Great app, needs instrument choices. I love this app, and I'm using it to write music for my song Worst Part of Heaven. But more instruments would be helpful, as well as possibly the ability to record vocals and turn the finished song into an mp3.

Recordings Don't Work Well. Love this tool except that no matter how perfect you get your rhythm while recording, it will be irregular during playback. :( Fix this and it would be a great tool!

Ok. They need to put more instruments on it because all they have on it is piano and I play guitar so it would be more useful to my if it had a guitar

Great! But. Please add modifier buttons that change the selected chord to its opposite major/minor third, and that make a chord suspended. I think this will fill a big gap.

so much for the new update. i updated and now it just crashes when I open it..I can't even use it! aren't updates meant to improve apps?? very diappointing. >:(

Needs MIDI Export. Great app, bought and was creating progressions, literally, seconds later. The first new feature should be MIDI export, that'd be excellent. Then after that, worry about adapting this to guitar.

Could be better. It is kinda fun at first but after just a couple of minutes it gets slightly boring. I say it's good but it could use some improvements.

just get the free version. i bought this app to be able to write songs with singing in it so i figured id get the 5 dollar one instead of the free one. there are so many annoying things you cant turn off- like the metranome! even in my final song theres no way to get rid of the annoying ticking. and when you add voice to it you have to shout so you can hear it after. if youre thinking of buying this app, instead get the free one. theres really not that much difference.

Great app works well on the ipod.. Not sure what the previous review was on about, it works great on my ipod touch. This app is fantastic for composing music on the go and really lets you sketch out a tune easily.

Needs work. Great little app, but some of the "7" chords aren't really "7" chords at all. They're other suspensions or jazz chords.

Pretty cool...but.... Nice app. Does what it claims but needs more instrument sounds (guitar). Also, the icon name needs to be shortened! Any app icon that displays as "iPhone App....." is kinda lame.

Who writes in the key of A#?. I think it's much easier for me to use the chords that use less flats. Please let us has the option of using the enharmonic of a key please

Needs more options.. This is a nice app, but needs improvement. Needs the ability to use slash chords as well as other chords that don't fit their formula. When they add that it will merit a higher rating.

What happened?. Shortly after I PAID for the full App it stopped working. There was an update where it opens in landscape direction, and crashes instantly. My new songs are in there and I can't get to them. You guys should be liable for the time it's going to take until I can get back to work on them. Livid. Inexcusable.

Does what it says. Easy to use. Very "casio" sounding though. Wish you could change instruments...?!?..

Great idea! More updates to come?. This app would be a very powerful educational tool if more chords were added and options were available change chord views from simple, like basic chords to more complex aug, sus, etc. That would be neat but good beginning keep building it :)

it would be nice......... It would be nice just to be able to pick notes not chords just all in one place instead of having to scroll through the whole list of note stuff I mean like a keyboard option would be really nice I mean I paid for this and I didn't find it all that usefull

Good app. Simple as name implied. Nice app overall. Wish it supported flat 6 chords for natural minor songs. Slash chords would also be a welcomed feature.

Bona fide composer. This app kicks a#% for 5 bucks. I would love it more if you could specify chord groupings for modulation of modes or keys

Great. But crashes.. Love the app. But now it just crashes since I updated it. I had two compositions saved on there. Will I be able to get them back? Please fix the crashes.

It's kinda ok. Its ok to play around with when waiting around. Wish you could export in midi or export in any form for that matter.

TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!. Omg! I luv this app! Its worth all the money I paid fir it! When my friends come over we write songs and sing them! It's sooooo cool!

Missing key features. Going with GigPal --- 1. Can't choose your own chords. If you listen to songs by the greats, not every song is built on the circle of 5ths 2. Have to record the song - you can't just lay the chords out on a score or tab. 3. I have not played through my headphones but through my phone speakers the audio quality is not that great.

Some people like it.. If it had a nice pad sound instead of a piano sound and a tempo adjustable percussion track it would be more fun to fool around with for those who don't know any music theory.

Where are the numbers?. The previous version allowed you to toggle to chord numbers (Nashville Number System-style), but now it's gone?! Please put this function back in, and this time, allow it to be "locked" in the numbers mode, please! Thanks!

Could be better. Needs different instruments. I'm a professional beat maker and I just scored a big hit from a tune I cooked up on this app. It works great with my KP3.

Crashes at opening. Same here, I downloaded the update and the app just crashes when I try to open it. Not sure how long it'll take for this to be fixed but how can I go back to the way it was before the update so I can still use it?

Terrible. New updated version is terrible and will basically destroy old song produced by previous versions, it change the speed among other problems.

Fun + Great = Great Fun. I bought this 'cause I thought it would be a useful tool, which it in fact is. What I love is how much fun it is to simply play.

Crap. This doesn't help create songs, it doesn't give me any ideas. There is no room for October keys or anything other than a major key signature. This app isn't even fun to play with. This is insulting to a real musician
