Echoing other reviews. Love the Dragon Quest series and was thrilled with the opportunity to experience the originals remastered on iOS. Sadly, where the first game ran flawlessly, this one seems to crash after each battle when you fight more than one of the same enemy. Given how far back some of the reviews go with users experiencing this same problem I might assume that we shouldn't expect a fix any time soon. Very disappointing, Square-Enix. UPDATE: After a lengthy series of emails with customer and tech support at Square-Enix. The jist of their response was that because the game "started up without crashing" it is, therefore, not broken enough to consider fixing or refunding and I may want to consider upgrading my device (currently have the iPhone 7). This was not merely disappointing but insulting and infuriating. I know I'm doing little more than peeing into the wind by posting my experience here but to anyone willing to talk to their support channels: don't waste your time. They are absolutely not willing to listen when it comes to a two year old, $5 app.

This is a Great game. 👍👍👍👍

Worth the money. A faithful port of a classic RPG from my childhood. While the game is easier than the original on the NES due to exp scaling it is otherwise an almost perfect port.

Bug fixed :). Thankfully, an update was just released that fixed the back button being untappable on iPhone 6 devices. This is probably the best was to play the game, good job devs.

Secret. If you are following the walkthrough that says go up the stairs in Beran and you’ll be in the outside world to Rendarack, but your in a room with an old man, then go DOWN not up to the stairs from the warp. Good game, nice interface, beat Malroth at levels 40, 38, 35. Wish I had know prayer ring has limited number of uses before I sold 2 of them. Poof Dust

Awesome!. I never beat this as a kid growing up in the 80s. Took 30+ years but I finally did it. Awesome game.

Playable Again!. It only took three months to fix!

Dragon Crash II. They fixed the bug! Now it is a delightful game to play! Just picked this up a few days ago, just got the second character, now the game is unplayable due to nigh-constant crashes at the end of battles.

Well worth the money!. It's been a long time since I last played This game. Likely since the 90s. I remember spending months beating the NES version. I can't remember how old I was, 11 at most. My memories of abuse in the last cave and castle kept me from playing subsequent ports. Time having healed my wounds I decided to give this port a go and do not at all regret my decision. This game is awesome. The difficulty feels just about perfect, the world more open than I remember, and the format of a mobile platform fits this game so perfectly. I do have some complaints about the controls, and the lack of precision makes a certain aspect of the final cave a bit more frustrating than it needs to be, but overall this was an awesome port and a great experience. Very much looking forward to other mobile ports (DQ7 in particular)! Keep up the great work squenix!

No iCloud save. I own iPad & iPhone. Can’t move saves between them. Great game but can’t rank higher since they won’t support a basic function. Also landscape mode would be nice.

A Classic. When my Dragon Warrior I & II cartridge for my Game Boy stopped working shortly after finishing the first game, I was glad that I could play the second on my phone. This is a great game. The game itself is a classic. Although, among the DQ games its considered to be one of the worst, I found it quite enjoyable. The story is much more involved than the first one and the additional party members add to the experience. This version of the game is probably the best. The game is generally criticized for its difficulty, but with this version a lot of that has been fixed; the ‘hidden’ treasures sparkle, the prince and princess are pretty useful, there’s a world map, etc. I also liked the updated sprites and the additional save options. The one thing that I didn’t really like was the controls. Coming from the Game Boy, it took me a while to get used to the touch screen controls, but once I did, I did. And to be fair, there aren’t really any better options on a phone. Overall, it’s a great game, well worth the $5 imo

TY Square Enix for listening to us!. FINALLY they fixed the bug issue. I'm grateful they listened to our complaints. I now give this game 5 out of 5 stars!

I’m back.. I finished the second game today. Beautiful experience like the first game, yet more expansive. Felt more alive then DQ1 (to be expected). I wrote long last time so I’ll Make it quick. I can’t wait to start the 3rd game. Everyone talks about how good it is and it’s the 3rd game at that. I got it waiting for me tomorrow. I don’t want to jump right in. I need coffee something to eat and 2 hrs lol. DQ3 here I come. #PEACE

Great Game. Needs controller support along with landscape view for it. Also the virtual d-pad is in the center of the screen when playing on my iPhone XS Max.

Shops crash the game. Thanks for fixing the shopkeeper crashing bug. Still, what happened to the unique musical score in Wellgarth/Burrowell? That delightful townswoman doesn't sing for you anymore, and it now sounds like every other boring town.

No sound effects. Great port! But sound effects are not present for iPhone 4s. Hopefully this gets fixed!

Good. Good

I never got to beat this game as a kid!. Now I can relive my childhood in classic RPG fashion, without an older brother taking the controller away. Anyone who played this as a kid will be a bit sad that it’s much easier with the quick save and auto save feature... but it saves you hours of your life too! Especially for gaming on the go! So glad they put this on iOS!!

Return button barely functional in 7 plus. Love Dragon Quest, always have since the original on the NES but the last update they put out to match the iPhone X screen resulted in the return button to barely work on the iPhone 7 Plus. This is highly frustrating and seriously takes away from the game play.

3rd Times the charm…. I have tried three times (at least) since the late 80s to beat this game. The original NES one was a little too hard for me at 9. My second try was on a flash Cart and I there was a save issue so I gave up. Shame on me for not staggering the 3 save slots… ;) I am so glad I saw this through on my iPad Pro. What a Great gaming experience. It was just about perfect related to the little fixes and QoL features. This version challenges the idea that DQ2 was the black sheep of the series. Cheers

The enemy are defeated. Please read above.

Epic. Really epic game

Combat bug fixed now. Although it took SE a shamefully long time, at long last the combat crash bug appears to be fixed and it's playable once again.

Controller support please. In this year 2024, with Switch ports existing, this game really needs controller support on iOS.

Great Classic RPG, but..... This game is great if you're a 2D rpg fan. I only have one pet peeve about this game, which is the language the game is using or tried to use. I understand the game takes place in a setting of a medieval type of era, but could they at least have the text be in the modern English language? Seriously, I had to analyze each sentence to understand and look for clues of what to do.

Crash issue finally fixed.. This game finally works as intended, and no longer crashes after every battle. Highly recommended for fans of grind heavy classic jrpg's, perfect for killing time and remembering there's actual JRPG games on the App Store that aren't infested with micro transactions and thinly disguised "gameplay" designed to separate fools from their money. A classic in every sense of the word and absolutely worth the one time purchase price for jrpg fans.

Error Report. Not really a review so much as reporting an error. Game froze while on the top floor of the southern dragon's tooth while playing on an iPhone 7. I had a set alarm on my phone go off just as I encountered an enemy "Sekerleton", dismissed the notification (swiped up on the pop-up) and the game stopped responding, sound stopped and had to force-close the app. Not sure if it was caused by the alarm starting during/before the battle started or if it was caused by dismissing the notification while in-game. Other than that, this has always been one of my favorite classic game series, you did fairly good work on this title, aside from losing some of its old charm without the original action menu. Still five stars.

Game breaking glitch::fixed. Updated: now that it works it's a great game. Square Enix: fix the bug on this game. Otherwise it's completely broken and unbeatable. Don't buy unless it's fixed.

Fixed At Last. So last time I reviewed this I wrote an extensive explanation of how this was Not Worth It. Well good news is, Square updated the game with a bug fix, which has now removed the crashing issue (which for clarification had it so battles with multiple of one enemy type upon defeat would cause a crash). Now I can write a proper review hurray! As a completable game it is reasonably worth it and much like an expanded edition of the first, which is responsive and does what it can for the original. As a remake (on the app store no less) I would objectively give it five stars but as it went so long without a big fix I give it four. Not that that matters much besides for the cover. Stars aside and to the real point, now that the game functions properly I can say it is a worthwhile game! Why are my reviews always so long

BUG IS GONE! NO MORE CRASHES!. Bug is gone. Started new game on 10 August 2016 before the update. At Rippleport (Liamport). Once I kill both of the Gremlins, the app crashed. Installed update, and now I got past the Gremlin battle, got the ship, and I'm on the quest to collect the 5 crests.

DQ2 is no longer the worst RPG of all time. After beating DQ1, I kept thinking “how on earth did 8 year old me figure all this out?” Answer: it took me 6 months and a notebook where I wrote down clues and mapped the caves and dungeons. I recall as a child starting DQ2 but don’t remember why I didn’t play it after a couple weeks. DQ2 difficulty level has to be 100X that of DQ1. The world is 4X as big, you need a boat, the dungeons are nearly impossible to figure out without a guide/walkthrough, there are 147,000 villagers to talk to and decipher their Ye Olde English clues. DQ1 had a handful of items you needed to acquire in order to complete objectives. I can’t even guess how many were in DQ2. You gain 2 characters, each with their own rules on what armor and weaponry they can don. Do you sell items back to the shops or try them on your partner first? So much thinking involved. It’s a slow go getting started and I bow my head in shame that I resorted to a walkthrough and auto save scrumming. Nonetheless, by the end I was addicted and neglected my wifely duties to beat this game. Wasn’t the biggest fan of Atlas. His power was very random and it didn’t seem fair that he killed my full HP level 36 Princess in one swipe. But what the original game lacked is more than made up for in this version. It plays flawlessly, there are no ads or hidden fees. Very enjoyable RPG.

DQ for Life.... ...longtime fan from when this series was called Dragon Warrior in the USA. Beyond hyped when they ported the series to iOS. Alas, there is a minor bug that makes it very difficult in the late game stage - Using ANY item for its special ability, (aka - Power Shield, Wizard's Staff, etc.), takes 20+ seconds to use. Please fix so I can finally face Hargon. :)

Nicely done. The grind is a bit real on this one. The monster encounter rate definitely higher than I recall, plus you must grind levels on about three to four different occasions. After getting all the end game gear and leveling all three characters to 46 the last boss was easy. Played on a iPad, controls were good since you can move by touching any part of the screen. Translation was a bit mediocre. Overall a good experience. I guesstimate about 35 hours to complete the game. Tips: get the falcon blade (bought in town), don’t skip the mad cap (last cave, near end game) both items make a big impact.

Pretty good port. Polishes up a classic rpg

Freezes. With update to iOS 14, the game freezes often on my iPhone 6S Plus. Freezes last for 2-3 seconds, but they happen several times per minute, which really takes away from the enjoyment. Without the freezes, the game would easily get 5 stars from me. Last update was 2 years ago. I wish SE would update this again to work well with the updated iOS.

How do I change language?. I know this is a good game and I want to play the game in traditional Chinese but I cannot find where I can switch it.

Excellent port!. Dragon quest 1-3 are all amazing on IPhone XR, they look and play great. Please update dragon quest 4-6 as well to take advantage of the new screen size please!

Nice throwback. It is fun, cheap way to enjoy childhood nostalgia, but the old carts and system would be a lot of money and time.... this I was able to enjoy it on the road. It has been changed... it is the same, but they nerfed the crap out of it, the save log allows you to save anytime (good for the road) but makes the game much easier... save every 5 steps or after every battle... also the level “grind” doesn’t feel as difficult or time consuming The graphics are nice and updated, the games save feature is nice for on the road, and it is pretty much exactly like the original, although some names were changed. I gave it a 4 because it was great fun, but needs a classic mode that is just like the original... heck in today’s insta win game world it would be called “hardcore” mode

Game is still broken auto save. Every time I close the game after real or auto save my saved game is gone idk why

Great retro game!!. Some really great music and a terrific port of the original - now that the crash bug appears to be fixed!

騙子. 怎么沒有中文

Crashes all the time. This is probably one of my favorite dragon quest games, but it crashes constantly on iOS 10. Update: they finally fixed the crashing issue!

Back button bugs fixed in latest update. I notified Square Enix of the issue in this game when I contacted them about the same one in Dragon Quest 3. The support ticket was escalated with a fix on the App Store a few days later. Kudos to the app developers on fixing this! What issue was: Broken back button and button for switching directional pad on iOS 11 + iPhone SE. App works ok on iOS 9 + iPhone 4S This game is a classic RPG and the UI and touch controls work well too. Treat yourself and get this app.

Great Sequel, iPhone X Optimized!. I love the original Dragon Warrior/Quest. It was my first RPG and still one of my favorites. However, many people say this sequel isn’t as good... BUT, I think this game is amazing! It’s the perfect blend of simplicity and customization. The first was very simple and the third has a lot of options. This DQ is a great mix. And now that it is updated to fit iPhone X, I’m really really enjoying it!

Bug fixes. Just adding this review to show SE my appreciation for addressing the bug that made this game unplayable. (Admittedly, it did take them pretty long to fix what seems like a minor yet gamebreaking bug.) Seems to be fine now, and it's a fantastic classic jrpg, and it's probably the best version of DQ2 out there.

Poor design. This game starts fun, but goes downhill quickly. The devs way of making the game more “difficult” is to make it more tedious. The fights don’t get harder, no strategy is required whatsoever. The “difficulty” comes from their dungeons, which as you progress through the game, turn into a mess of random doors and hallways that go in loops, or take you back to the beginning. For hours. No puzzles to stump you, no strong bosses to overcome, just tedious guesswork to find the end of a cave. This game is obnoxious, and to be honest the story isn’t interesting enough to bother slogging through the tedium. Save your money and get a better game.

Stairway Glitch at the Lighthouse Dungeon. This game is fantastic and I’ve had a lot of fun. I’m giving it one star because I am currently experiencing a game ruining glitch. In the lighthouse dungeon there are no stairs populating so I cannot progress. Please fix this or let me know I am missing something. Thank you

Loved it, got through it pretty quick. Definitely worth the price tag. I admit I had a bit of trouble staying immersed and fell back on an old ascii walkthrough to burn my way to the finish line. But it was still worth it. Doing it that way made it a pretty short game. The low difficulty helped. Now I’m on to DQ3 which I like more.

Almost flawless.... Great remake of a classic. Now the bug driving me crazy is when you use any of your gear as an item(like the lighting staff) the delay is really long. You almost think it's going to crash any second. Fix that and you got a five star translation

Useless and apparently not just for me. I want a refund! Crashes after almost every battle, but works great until then. :-/ Tech support was not helpful, as after minimal attempt their answer was "We apologize for the problem you are having. While we appreciate the effort you are putting in to correct the issue, being that this is an app on iTunes, there isn't much we can offer other then deleting and reinstalling the game. This issue will be reported to development, and if there is a fix pushed you will notice an update available for the app in the app store. We'd like to let you know we have attempted to re-create this problem on our systems here at work, only to be able to properly launch the game. We download the game from the same iTunes you do, so unfortunately this points to something local to your device."

The game is working now!. No more problem. It’s a great game after all those years.

Butchered. Oh Square-Enix, again? The original large a pixels of this 8-bit classic have been stretched beyond recognition. Everything looks about 120% too tall and every second pixel is a rectangle not a square. In short it looks awful. The menus and text too are no longer classic 8-but style and instead are some boring san-serif font that looks TOTALLY out of place. The game would be better served in landscape mode OR make the bottom of the portrait orientation a virtual controller. Why? Your thumbs cover the action anyway. The sound is lacking and it's hard to say why. It's like bad midi files and lacks that low-fi charm. Look I get it - it's an old game on a new phone so there has to be compromises and if I'm such a Puritan I'd play it on an NES. But the graphics are bad. You can't deny that. And the font and overall user interface is just so out of place. It's almost as bad as when they ruined the graphics of Final Fantasy VI with those overly smooth new designs. Seriously look on the App Store -- people are fine with 8- and 16-bit looking games! Why ruin a good thing? A shoddy port all round. At least it's not $50 or whatever like some of their other games.

Starry Skies. I love the dragon quest franchise! Still praying for IX to hit iOS (long shot I know but I can dream)

Crashes. Please fix the crashing in battles. It's not possible to play.

Bugs. Great game until it bugged out. I can't talk to shop owners without the game shutting down :(

Broken. Glitched to the max

Relentlessly boring and unskippable intro. The intro was enough to make me feel entirely apathetic towards the game, but then when I left the game and came back in and it insisted on playing the intro again ... it made me actively loathe it. Waste of money.

1.0.2 has the crashes. The new version keeps crashing at the end of battle, please patch Square Enix.

Fixed. With the latest iOS update, all game crashes seem to have stopped and I can finally enjoy this game. I've been waiting for a while now and am so happy to continue my Dragon Quest education.

Post Battle Crashes. There's a non optional battle that will always cause the app to crash when the last opponent is knocked out. Really keen to see this get patched ASAP to continue enjoying the game. Would rate 5 stars otherwise. Thanks! Warning: Do not buy this game until it gets patched up.

Another great remake!.. This is better than the retranslated version as well!. Great job square enix. Can you make final fantasy 7, dragon quest 6, 7 and 9 for the iPhone (iOS)?. It would be great if it is possible.

Great. Dragon quest 2 is definitely more in depth in comparison to the original, but it still keeps that classic feel to it, and I'm really enjoying it, just as I did the first one. Worth it.

Crashes after first fight. Don't buy until or if they ever patch it.

Crashing Fest.... I really wanted to play this classic again. Sadly, the game crash randomly and very frequently after defeating enemies in battle. (Does not happen if you flee...). I guess I will be waiting for a patch hoping that my moneywas not wasted.

Doesn't work. The game still does not work crash, crash, and crash. Can't make it past one fight. Waste of my already limited funds. Thanks a lot Square Enix would of bought something that I can ACTUALLY play.

Game is completely broken. Crashes after first battle.. No idea how this got past testing. Unplayable.

A lovely trip down nostalgia lane. I used to play these games all the time on the NES and this one is better with the superior graphics. The interface is pretty natural and easy to use, though I wish there were an option where the screen could switch to horizontal view. I also forgot how hard all the puzzles in this game were (it's been long enough since I played it that I forgot everything). It was well worth the few dollars I spent on it.

Ignore much?. This bug fix should have been addressed already. Inkeeper prompts home screen. Wish i could get my money back. Someone doesnt care. :(.

Glitch??. Great game love it, the glitch that shuts off game is minor as it has an autos ace feature and u just reload up entry to a town etc but I did notice early in beginning that in the tower of wind getting cloak i always seem to fall through the floor and unable to complete anyone else experiencing this?

Unplayable, bad interface.. Poorly made. Not made for iPhone, the interface has all kinds of weird concepts as if it is ported from PC or something. Unplayable.

Fixed bug. I found a way around the crashing, hopefully it works for more than just me. I play on my iPhone 5c and on startup with a saved game usually crashes talking to inn, shipowner, etc. I found as soon as I start my saved game that if I make a quick save then continue playing the game will not crash! Hope this works! Great game, a lot easier that the items show up as a "sparkle" though...

Solid title and great remake. If you enjoy classic party and turn-based RPG's, then this is for you. Great adaptation of the original NES game with new features such as being able to return to any town or castle rather than only where you last saved. Only problem is a message speed bug when using battle items where the text progresses increasingly slower the more you use them until you reload your game. If ever fixed, then 5 stars from me.

Solid classic. A solid retouch of an old classic. The gameplay is very traditional and much if the difficulty is unintentional due the age of the games concepts. Still a solid Dragon Quest experience and a fun little romp into Alefgard.

Sound effects. I’m getting music but no sound effects even at max setting. I’m playing on iPhone 8 Plus Any ideas

Another classic. The game is just like any other Dragon Quest games. Classic old school Jrpg. Game ran flawlessly on my iPhone 4S. The button layout is amazing, the game plays well with one hand. The game can be frustrating sometimes (the old english doesn't help). But in general, it's a great game!

Sound effect not working!. The game is really fun, but the sound effects are not working on my iPhone XR. Apparently i’m not the only one with this issue.

Fun but crashes. Works fine for the first hour or so, then it's just a parade of crashes. Talk to certain shopkeepers, innkeepers, etc and it always crashes. I'm waiting for a fix before I play it again.

Got it!!!! I Love RPG's :). Please release more. I'll buy 'em all. :)

good game. no crashes for me. can't get into Hargon's castle though. I believe I have tried everything.

Great classic :). I've just finished it , really great version :) Got an iPad air2 run Well and no freeze thanks to port our fav rpg series of all time on iOS :)

Bugs have been fixed. FIVE STARS!!! Now that the patch has been released to fix the crash/ bugs!!!! :)

Good but needs patch.. Yooooooo patch this. It crashes whenever I talk to anyone behind a counter. The main bad guy might actually win if you don't do something about it. Crashing the game is an ingenious way to defeat me.

The game is still unplayable?. Purchased this when it came out. So disappointed to see this still crashes after every battle. Using iPhone 6. Fix the App!

Keeps crashing. After almost every fight the game crashes. Just wasted $6 apparently. I'm a huge fan of the dragon quest series and have not had issues like this with the other ports, so this is extremely disappointing

Bugs & Issues Are Fixed. All the bugs and glitches have been fixed, so ignore the past bad reviews. Now that the game runs perfectly, it's great! I've been playing pretty non-stop the past 2 days. Very fun and addicting.

Awesome!. I love the dragon quest series!! Great game! (Extremely happy they are on the iPhone and iPad..)

Crashing. In the last few days all it's doing is crashing. I just got princess and talking to anyone in town makes it crash. Pls patch this ASAP. I beat part 1 and wanna finish

Major bugs - game crashing repeatedly. I was having a blast with this great classic... Until I got my second party member. Now I can't talk to shopkeepers or inns without crashing. Literally unplayable until they fix it. How they can release a game that doesn't work is beyond my understanding. Did they even bother to test it before release?

Excellent classic. I recently started on the DQ series and just cleared this second title last night. DQ1 felt like a fun, retro RPG but in DQ2 I teared up a bit listening to the ending :p This is a super improvement on DQ1 on many levels - several fun quests to complete and you can take your time exploring the expanded world and richer settings. The 3-member team play made the story and characters far more engaging, and when you finish you really feel like you've overcome obstacles, shared adventures, and saved the world with two best friends. It is amazing that this old game with pixelated graphics can still give much joy to players :) Looking forward to playing DQ3 soon!

Best game ever..but crash everytime. I cant talk to a merchant without the game crashing.. Please fix it. I see that many other people have the same problem. Do something , its the best game ever , we need to play ! ;)

Unplayable. Unbelievable it made it past testing. Apple should be ashamed to let failapps into their stores. I'm getting my money back.

Great game, too bad about the crashes :(. I played through the iPad version of Dragon Quest 1 without issue, and decided to buy 2 as well. The game is quite nice, but crashes randomly when you talk to people, making it pretty much impossible to play. Please fix!

Really great. Love the whole dragon quest series. For nostalgic purposes you can’t put these down. There is a bug though. When you get to the parts of the game. And you fight mobs like pazuzu, they won’t spawn. If you leave the area and come back to that map, you can walk forever and nothing will spawn. This noticeable if both DQ2 & DQ3

Crashes too often. The game crashes about 50% of the time when you speak to towns people, the only way to stop it is leave the town and hope when you re-enter it doesn't crash.

Crash issues!. crashes when I'm at a shop; and every time I try and pick up the Thunderbolt sword. ...please fix. great game; but useless if I can't play it.

Bugged combat fixed!. EDIT: The game seems to work again as of the most recent patch. Way to not bungle the most basic aspects of quality assurance, Square Enix. Good job! ******* I caused a glitch to occur somehow during this playthrough. After exiting the cave with the Silver Key, I used a Chimera Wing, and Tantegel castle was on my list (despite how I hadn't yet been there). This doesn't seem to be adversely affecting my game. ******* DQ2 is a fun, fairly simple classic JRPG. It's scope is smaller than DQ3 (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), and more in-depth than DQ1. I enjoyed that it was much more like older RPGs in that it gives you a decent sized world to freely explore where you will once you get your ship. There is a pretty fantastic sense of exploration in this game, especially considering how old it is! For a JRPG, this game wasn't much of a grind fest at all, which I liked. It moves along at a good clip without you ever really having to stop & level up. There are some minor gripes. There seems to be a minor glitch where if you use an item (like the Lightning staff) in battle, it takes an absurdly long time for the text & damage to load up (like a minute+ for a group of enemies). It'll also often not say "Isolde uses the Lightning Staff", and instead it just says "13". Pretty lazy quality control for a game that costs $4-5. There's some other minor nuisances, like how you have an item called the Echo Flute (which is used to help you locate key plot items) which will only work if you're in the EXACT room where the plot item is found. This makes the item misleading. You walk up to a tower, you use the flute, it says "no echoes here", and you think "ok!" And go search elsewhere. Unfortunately, the item WAS there, only it was like 6 floors up. My gripes are minor though, and on the whole this game was pretty fun! If you like old school RPGs, pick it up.

Bug and closes. Closes when the first fight ends on my iphone 6s... I had no problem with Dragon Quest 1. That was a wasted 5$...

Classic. Everything has a few bugs when first released. Still, it's a great classic to play. Hope DQ III will be next and don't forget to make a classic bundle pack of DQ I - IV if it is.

Ugh. Game shuts off after a battle. As of September 20, no Fix.

Thanks for fixing the bug. A lot better now. Thanks.

Love the game but no SFX. SFX stopped working in menus/battles after a quicksave was loaded up. Haven’t found a fix but apparently this is a common issue that probably won’t get patched.

Crashes. Unplayable until there is an update

Shopkeeper crashing bug. Game needs a patch, it's constantly crashing when trying to talk to shopkeepers. I've reset the game, turned off my phone, tried leaving and getting in battles and nothing works. Using an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.

Fantastic. Really enjoyed this nostalgic throwback. Almost no grinding out levels required. Just one important note, when finding your way to Rhone/Rendarak, in the small room with the teleportation tile, the secret exit is on the southern wall. I’m pretty sure the nes version I played ages ago didn’t have the room with the old man to confuse things (talking about heading West or something).

Crashes and Square Enix is useless. I purchased this game after playing the first one. I unfortunately didn't read the comments to see that so many people can't play the game. I have the same issue, can't get past any battle in the game. Contacted Square Enix thinking they might put a fix through... I've been going through a runaround now for almost a month... they don't read the information they request from you and end up saying they can't replicate it... clearly there is an issue otherwise there would not be so many people complaining. Don't buy this game.

Crashes after the first battle. Read the reviews and assumed that it had been patched by now. It hasn't yet.

Good game, but no levelling. You simply can't level up in this s app. My game crashes every time I win a battle. It seems unable to assign exp to the character.

Used to work, crashes often now. Game crashes after battle. Really disappointed, trying to play the entire series!

Still crashing. Should have paid attention to the other reviews. Game crashes for me right after my first fight, so the game lasts all of 5 minutes. Waste of money right now, do not buy!

Unplayable. Can't get past first random fight, game crashes.

Major bug cant finish the game. Some idiot on the programming team put a wall in the temple that supposed to get to Hargon. Now the final part is blocked until this gets fixed. Who does the quality testing on this thing?

App crashes constantly. This really could have been a great game. I have played both Dragon Quest 1 and 4 for the iOS, and they are fantastic. But, unfortunately Dragon Quest 2 crashes non stop. I mean it actually crashes every other battle. Consequently, it is completely unplayable in its current form. It desperately needs to be fixed before any other poor soul purchases this.

Great. But my previous device only had music, no sounds. Sadly theres no way to find out until you buy it... But having a more compatible device is worth it! Works great on my iphone 6p

Please fix the bug. Huge fan of dragon warrior (dragon quest), and experiencing what recent reviews are saying as well. Game crashes each time I try talking to the inn people and merchants. Problem just occurred today, game has been really fun so far! It's a nice trip down memory lane

No problems for me!. No idea why people are having so many issues with the game - it works perfectly for me. Loved the game when it was originally released, appreciate the re-release for iOS. Great gameplay, excellent controls, loved it. PS the Zoom spell worked properly for me.

Bugs fixed!. I can finally play the game I know and love since the update! Very glad they fixed the issues, and now everything is working smoothly.

Square Enix it needs work to be great!. Ok so there is something wrong with the save feature for this game if you don't immediately Auto save every time you start the game it will crash if you to ann inn or shop and go to talk. Also the renamed items so it's hard to know exactly what you getting. Also you the moon shard from the king dose not show up in the inventory so at this point that no way to get and no way to open the shrine :(. Last your save does not float from device to device play this on the iPhone 5 you have to start over on the 6 or iPad. They need to cloud the saves.

Best RPG franchise. This is a really good dragon quest with an expansive world and being able to use 3 characters. A huge upgrade from the 1st game and still lacking some aspects added in later games, but the story and gameplay is simple and it makes you feel like you're 12 years old again playing on that awesome NES. Truly a nostalgic and fun experience for die hard RPG fans.

Garbled Pixel Graphics. Both DQ1 and DQ2 suffer from this issue. It looks as though the images are stretched over my iPhone 6's screen without taking into account the original screen ratio. Thus, some pixels and squished and others are stretched. It gives both games a seriously unprofessional and unmaintained look. I've heard that other games in the series don't suffer this fate, but because of how these have been released I will not be purchasing other Dragon Quest games on iOS.

Love it, but needed a little hint for the last crest. This is a great game that is so addicting, just another level or a little bit of gold. It will keep you grinding away. This is an older game, no hand holding and not much help on the internet yet. I also want to thank Darrin78 for the Tentangel hint but the king is above the armory not at the inn. Now I can finish.

Crashing reported to Square Enix. I too am having the problems with the game crashing. I have reported the problem to Square Enix. It appears to happen at the end of every battle where two things are true: 1. You are battling multiple enemies in a single battle 2. All of the enemies are the same kind of creature. I don't have an ETA on the fix but at least they're aware of it. There is a workaround that can help you advance until the bug is fixed, although there is a point after which you can not proceed. The workaround is to run away any time you are fighting multiple iterations of the same creature (even if the creature is listed twice). You will get stuck in the town where you can get a ship because getting the ship is contingent upon defeating two gremlins. (But there is a second bug that enables you to move to the next castle via the Zoom spell...) I have three devices: an iPhone 6 Plus, an iPad Air 2, and a fifth generation iPod touch. The game crashes on the iPhone and iPad but not the iPod. This tells me that the problem has something to do with the way the game utilizes the core processing chip in the device.

Crashes on iOS 8. Great game. I had the game on my old iPhone 4 and just recently got the new iPhone 6. Had no problems with the game on my old phone with 7.0.2 now with iOS 8 it crashes at shops and the inns. Please fix.

Works Flawlessly. I love this game. Brings me back to the old gameboy days as a kid. This port runs flawlessly on my iPhone 5s. I'm in the cave to Rhone currently (near the end) and I haven't ran across a single bug. Graphics are more beautiful than ever! Thanks for this port!

Great game, but buggy version.. As much as I loved the release of DQ1, 2 doesn't have the same polish. I'm experiencing frequent crashes and the sound effects cut out constantly. Here's hoping for a patch sooner later. Give III a better treatment, and how about releasing VII and X in English while you're at it?

Kind of buggy. I am using iOS 8. Every single shop I attempt to go to (inn, item, weapon) results in the game crashing. I can fight fine, and I can talk to any other person in game fine, but as soon as I try to spend gold, the game crashes. PLEASE FIX THIS QUICK! UPDATE- I found the shopping issue to be isolated to when loading a game from the auto save option. If you load a game normally or load from quick save data I am able to go into the shops. I have upped the rating from 2 stars to 4 stars.

Sfx. Just like old times! I'm having no issues crashing but my sound effects aren't working. Also, the return spell works like it did in the nes version (no list) XD

Constant crashing and no sound effects on iPad Air running iOS 8. I have every Square Enix game on iOS including all the Dragon Quest series and this release has by far been the worst. First sound effects only work 1 out of every 3 times which forces you to close and restart the app until it works and second is the crashing. From picking up quest items to resting at an inn. I know it auto saves but it kills the flow of the game when you have to keep restarting from the main menu every 10 minutes or so. Please update soon because I'm a huge Dragon Quest fan that will not purchase another title if I don't see these simple problems fixed.

It Works but..... This game so far works. To fix the problem that everyone is having, close every app in the background. This game doesn't use memory well. With that saying, the longer you play, it may crash after an hour or two. Best just to save a lot. As far as the game goes. I haven't finished yet but seems good.

A timeless classic.... Very impressed and satisfied with Square Enix and the classic Dragon Quest ports they have been working on. I hope to see a port of Dragon Warrior Monsters someday. Until then, my only real request is a cloud based saving function so that I can continue my adventures between iPhone and iPad!

Most underrated Dragon Quest. This game is a real joy, with a clever design and fantastic writing. The iOS version is the best English version, and the orchestral music is phenomenal. This is an OLD game, keep in mind, but for people like me who have been around since the first Dragon Quest, you can see the roots of the genre here, and it is amazing how playable it actually is.

Crashing issues. I have downgraded my review to 1 star; I too am experiencing the exact same crashes that MANY others have also explained here. What I don't understand, is why when Dragon Quest 3 had the EXAXT SAME bug, they were able to correct it in quick manner. So how come it can't be figured out with this one? I will change my review once it's been fixed instead of the company blaming it on the gamers' devices....

Fun game, though buggy. I was very glad to finally see a remake of Dragon Warror/Quest II come to the US, and this is an excellent port. However, being version 1.0, it's not without its flaws. I've experienced bugs such as missing SFX and the game crashing whenever I try to stay at an inn (running iOS 8.02 on iPhone 4S). I'm sure these will be fixed soon, though.

Thank you Squareenix. Thank you so much Squareenix for putting Dragon Quest 2 on IOS! I never had the chance to play the original as a child. Can't wait to see DQ3 on IOS soon.

Keep it up S-E!!. This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. I loved the original and own the gbc remake. Fantastic game for anyone looking for a light fantasy tale with great classic RPG elements. I can't wait for DQ III which is my favorite in the series.

Crashes. Crashes often on iPad Air running ios8. I've had it randomly crash 2 times in 30 minutes. Depending on when it crashes the auto save feature may or may not get you back to a point close to the crash. I'll be waiting for an update if one ever comes.

Great Game! Need Help Though!. I love this game even more than the first. But I can't find the Life Sigil. I went through the portal in Beran, stepped out of the monolith, but a flame spirit blocks my path to get to the entrance to the cave of rhone. It tells me I need all five sigils and permission from Rubiss to pass but the fifth Sigil is in the cave that it's blocking. HELP PLEASE!!!

Recent update fixed bugs. The recent update fixed the bug with the merchant crashing, but I still don't always get sound when the app starts. I still rate 5, because I have Dragon Quest 2 in my phone. I love this game so much!!! Great RPG.

Everyone should demand a refund. This game simply doesn't work. It sounds like it used to, but Square Enix broke it. I've contacted their support and got an automated email saying they would get back to me within 48 hours, but I never heard back. Apple shouldn't let something like this stand--no matter when you bought the game, contact Apple and demand a refund. If/when Square Enix decides to fix it, you can purchase it again if you dare.

Read The Review And Then Buy This App. DRAGON QUEST II is an addictive and fun game but I like the first one best. I got so far! I have all DRAGON QUEST except for DRAGON QUEST VIII (8). So what I am technically saying is that if I give a 2-4 Star review it is ok. And one more thing..... Since I got DRAGON QUEST IV, I can't realize why it is 15 dollars and maybe I will buy DRAGON QUEST VIII for 20 dollars in 2015 and I can't wait until DRAGON QUEST III comes out! And that is all!

Dragon Quest 2. Love the game one of my favorite. Please make the game landscape. Great game, graphics and music is really good and addictive. Thanks for the attention.* I love all dragon quest saga but why the last dragon quest vi of the franchise is not available. Why? Thanks for the attention.

Flawed but still amazing. This second title in the series did a lot new but has a few flaws. The Zoom spell only takes you back to where you last saved as opposed to listing all previously visited towns. This sounds minor but it means a TON of lengthy backtracking. Other than that the game is amazing and really worth playing at a great price.

Great game. Great game, apparantly a lot of ppl seem to be having trouble but it runs smooth and perfectly for me. No crashes whatsoever. I enjoyed every bit from start to finish.

Buggy with issues. Game crashes in towns when speaking to anyone, have to quick save before I talk to anyone and it fixes it till next time in town. Also cannot get into Rhone, only teleport to Rhone has a second level that is completely blocked from editing. Cannot finish game at all. Please fix bugs!!

Great game when it works. I grew up on the NES "Dragon Warrior" games, so when I found out they were available on iOS I jumped at the chance to own them again. The problem is, like most releases early on, this is very buggy. Some have reported sound issues (haven't had those myself yet). But I get frequent crashes when I go into a town to use the inn. Or shop. Only fix right now is to go to the king, save, and restart in town to access the inn and shop. This is a great game series and will be much better when the bugs are squashed. Wait a bit before you download this.

Great take on a classic RPG. This is probably my favorite of the DQ games. I love that it's now portable. The only thing keeping me from giving in 5 stars is the fact that there's no Cloud Save like the other DQ games on iOS (IV and VIII) that I have playe so far. I like to be able to play on both my iPad and iPhone.

Bring’s back the old times!. I’ve played the original NES version, and this is nothing like it, its better! The graphics are better than even the 16-bit remake and the orchestral music is great! This is a great revision of Dragon Quest II I’d recommend for anyone who likes RPGs

Crashes after Battle. Just finished playing the first Dragon Quest game and it was absolutely fantastic. So I bought this and every time I encounter a multiple slime battle the game crashes completely out of the game. It is a very consistent crash. I did a quick saving from the world map and each time it crashed I could jump back in, reload and have it crash me out again within 25 seconds or so. I have 2.5 gig free on my currently updated iphone 6 so it's not a memory issue

Highly recommended. At first this was a little glitchy, however, after an update works beautifully. If you like old school jrpgs u cannot go wrong here.

One more one-star review. Since SE's support didn't listen to me when I contacted them about the crashes that literally dozens of people are now reporting in these reviews, I figured I'd add one more negative review and see how many it takes before they take notice and fix it. Ever since the update on 8/10, which apparently added language support, the game crashes after combat the vast majority of the time. It is completely unplayable. If you contact support, after some runaround, they give you form-letter responses blaming your device. Don't bother deleting and reinstalling like they suggest, either; all you'll do is erase your saves. They just claim they're still able to "launch the game" on their end, ignoring the fact that that isn't even the issue. Never written an App Store review before. A company breaking their game with an update and then ignoring the fallout seemed like a good place to start.

Crashing again. I can play again!!!! You have to go into settings, choose Safari, then delete all cookies! I didn't believe it would work at first when SE sent that email to me, thought it was a cookie cutter response, but it worked. :update: It worked for about 3 minutes (about 5 battles) before crashing again... Smh. They really need to run a patch for this glitch...

Amazing!. Have played through the first and second one so far and am sure that I will finish the series. Never played the original games, but these remakes are highly addictive and well made.

Awesome! Only drawback are name changes. DW2 is an amazing and challenging RPG. Playing it brings back lots of good memories and the game itself runs beautifully. My only complaint is the name changing of spells & monsters that are kiddish, albeit clever. Example: Firebal/Firebane = old DW2 good spells; this version it's Sizz/Sizzle I greatly prefer the old (classic) names and would prefer a remake used them but I can look past it because DW2 is just that good and tough of a game.

One of my favorites!. I loved this game a lot when I was much younger. I'm so glad I get to be able to experience it again on my phone.

another broken squenix port. edit: I've noticed it only crashes when I fight all the same enemy... i.e. if I fight 3 slimes (or any other monster), regardless of how they are grouped, it will crash, if I fight 2 slimes and a maulusc (or any other combination of two or more monsters), it won't crash. just like final fantasy tactics this is completely broken and unplayable due to frequent crashes during or right after battles... I've managed to fight 2 battles without crashes... not even enough to gain a level. took them years to fix FFT so don't hold your breath on this one!

Unplayable. I managed to play this on my iPhone 5 awhile back, but it was buggy. Now on my 6 w/ the most current iOS, it outright crashes to home. Apparently I'm one of the lucky ones since I've been able to enjoy it previously, but this is pretty poor on the part of Apple and SE. APPLE - Please pull this off the App Store until SE fixes this. People are paying for a product that doesn't work.

SE needs to fix this.. It is a fantastic game, however SE quality of support of their previous apps is next to non existent and their ability to communicate on the matter is ridiculously poor. If I was a AAA company and it takes me a year that even smaller developers can knock out in a day, I would be very embarrassed. SE you need to set your priorities straight and get to fixing any previous app that have obvious over the top crash issues like this one.

Game Breaking Bug. I love this game, it's been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I grew up on this franchise and I downloaded this with high hopes (despite the reviews about the bug) and honestly, this app is unplayable. First, any fight with a certain combination of enemies (three or more for small, two or more for large) and the app crashes. Ok, just run from those, sure, until you get to Rippleport. It is impossible to get the ship! You have to fight a pair of gremlins to get it, and immediately after the game crashes! Fix this bug!

Game keeps crashing. What little of it I've been able to play has been fun, but it keeps crashing to the point that it is unplayable. It should get five stars, but I'm only giving it three because of how unstable it is.

As good as the NES version but has bugs. It has been very nostalgic playing this. It's not as good as dq3 or 8 content wise but I have enjoyed it. Sadly it gets 3 stars for now because of the repeated crashes. Fortunately the auto save feature when you enter a town has kept me from quitting due to lost progress. If you get caught by the bug load your auto save then perform a quick save from the misc menu and it snaps out of the crash conditions.

Crashes After battle. Whenever I've tried opening the game recently, the majority of the time after I defeat the enemies, instead of showing exp etc the app closes. I read the recent update details and saw it was meant to affect languages, but I'm pretty sure it has also affected much more in a negative way, making it unplayable

Good Times. Now that all of the bugs are fixed, this game is a lot of fun. No complaints here. I think you will like it if you are a fan of the original.
