Simple, fun, entertaining. Can be finished in about two days (probably less if you look up a guide). No ads, no in-app purchases. A simple RPG (perhaps THE original simple RPG) that delivers a fun experience for all ages. Recommended.

Grind Quest. Dragon Quest 1 on the NES is known as one of the most grind heavy games ever made. As versions are released, it gets less and less like this. Luckily, this version I feel gets the exp and gold system just right. 4 Stars for Classic rpg gameplay and open exploration with a world that feels like an appropriate size. 1 Star missing for lacking music. (I know it’s the first entry, but I’m looking at this game retrospectively.)

A wonderful time.. I love the Dragon Quest series, but because I don’t own the older consoles I’ve only been able to play DQ 8 and 11 on my own. Bought this on a whim and while it didn’t take me long to beat I’m really happy I finally got to play the original dragon quest game, even if it’s a remastered port. Hooray for Dragon Quest!

No audio iPad OS 15. I love this game as it’s the first rpg I ever played as a young kid. I am annoyed with apple, always breaking apps and games with their OS releases. I am selling all my apple devices and never purchasing from the App Store again. Piece of crap company.

Classic goodness. Classic, simple, enjoyable. I wish, though, that after this many years they would allow the option of playing as a female hero. I would buy it all over again if it meant I could rescue Gwaelin as a woman.

Great game. I love old school RPG games. This one is another great addition to my collection. I used a guide on line to help me out a little which made the game more enjoyable for me. I really like that the game makes you do a little grinding to level up. Am definitely going to be looking at the other ones. The game plays great on the phone and I had zero issues. The story wasn’t bad for the time period of the game either. Buy with confidence if you like these older games.

Finally Beat It!!!. I started playing this game back In the 80's. I never beat it. I tried again in the 90’s again did not complete it. Being able to play it on my ipad is an amazing journey. I love the smooth controls on the touch pad. The sound track is memorable. The "Quick Save" option is definitely an added bonus. The graphic looks insane on the IOS device. What else can I say. This game has been around for 30+yrs. Thank you Apple/iTunes because (I Finally Beat It)....

Annoying glitch. When I save the game does not save the same happened in dragon quest ll also it deleted all my saves Please fix this otherwise good game

On iPad Pro cannot get ‘search’ function to work. I like this game, but I when I press the screen I cannot get the search function to come up. Can someone help?

Very well done. This Game is absolutely amazing. It is just challenging enough to keep you from getting thoughtless, yet not so much that you feel frustrated. Very great retro play. Totally worth spending the money to play this game. I imagine I will buy each mobile port to this game series. I look forward to each new adventure.

Awesome!. I played every Final Fantasy out there and I needed a series i could start from scratch. I have Dragon Warrior in the 80s but didn't beat and hardly remember it. This game is awesome. I'm writing this after just finishing DQ 3. Give the series a chance, it tells and awesome trilogy story!!

Great port. First time playing through these classic dragon quest games and thanks to the mobile ports they are easy to grab and go. play for 15mins and stop, go do what ever and come back and pick up right where you left off. The port is self is pretty good to me at least being able to customize the controls location and only once during my play through did i freeze, but because of auto save the game froze or crashed, I closed the game and start up right before that event happened truly a great port.

Dragon Warrior. Loved this game growing up cause I got it with my subscription to Nintendo Power. The only reason it's not getting five stars and my only complaint about the app, the game audio (even if it is all muted) wants to be in charge of the audio. So I can't listen to podcasts or music and play because the menus stop responding to taps unless I exit the game and re-enter ... which will mute my music or podcast. This makes me not want to play or buy subsequent games in the series. Fix this and I'll continue playing and buy the rest.

THE BEST WAY TO PLAY THESE GAMES…kinda. These games are amazing on mobile, I can’t say the same for the other ones but the first one is a condolete remake built from the ground up, it is an AMAZING way to play it, but…there are other ways to play the game and playing a game that’s kinda long on your phone is…not that great…but it’s still a good game, I would recommend to anyone who wants to play dragon quest for the first time and only has an iphone

nostalgia is strong. I'm not sure if the gameplay will cut the mustard for roof fans that have never played Dragon Warrior/quest. The gold and exp updates are very welcome and cut the uber grinding down to manageable levels. The graphical updates are very nice bumps it up to Snes levels. If you had fond memories of this game but couldn't deal with the grind this app is perfect.

Still good after almost 30 years. After playing Dragon Quest Builders, which takes place with this game’s plot line, I felt like I should go back and play this game. The last time was nearly 30 years when it came to the US. I figured this version should be the one to play. At first the updated graphics were a bit jarring, but I got over that quickly. Some of the game play elements are a little easier than its first incarnation, but I still had a lot of fun with this and it brought back all those memories. On to the next one...

Weirdly amazing.. If there is ever a game that aged as well as wine and milk at the same time, this game is the prime example. Honestly this game makes me feel so weird. The controls are simple enough that porting it to the IOS store works out really well, it’s decently priced, and is as nostalgic as it can get. That being said, this game also has the plague of most old games: It’s hard as hell and grindy as hell. Seriously, it’s refreshing to fight monsters that are as strong as you, but god help your soul-and your gold sack-If you decide that you can risk something. You will die. A lot. The smallest numbers add up and can easily screw you over even if you are 1 level lower than you should be. That being said this game is still as charming as the day it was born. It’s the timesless tale of “Rescue girl, Slay dragon, kill villain (in this case this and the last one at the same time!), win everything.” And Toriyama’s monsters getting a fresh coat of paint makes them feel right at home. Would recommend. I gaurentee you will spend more money on something and be far more dissapointed.

Nostalgic but a little disappointing. I played the original Dragon Warrior on NES, and if you are looking to relive that experience then you’ll be a little disappointed like I was. 1. Graphics. This game is less pixelated and more cartoony than the original. I was looking forward to the classic graphics and was let down. 2. Difficulty. The challenge of the game has been reduced to the capability of children.

Great for a stroll down memory lane. I spent so much time grinding this game as a kid, it’s a real treat to play on my phone. I recommend anyone who loved this game back in the day to pay up and spend a lazy afternoon reliving their childhood. Newer gamers have the opportunity to see the classic 8-bit RPG that in many ways was the genesis of a whole genre. This game, as klunky as it feels today, was a real original at the time and inspired a generation of rpgs.

A solid remastering; some bugs. A great JRPG classic brought forward in time with some good polish. Unfortunately, the game has a few bugs that can break it pretty easily. Try not to lock your device while using the app.

Glitched endgame boss. First game I tried in the series and really enjoyed it. I liked it much better then FF1 which I also played. Only thing I didn’t like is at the final boss battle the bosses 2nd form is glitched. He is suppose to use a series a different attacks and he only used his strongest one the entire time. That didn’t happen in my friends game who beat the game the same day I did and the only difference is he bought his in the play store. Other then that frustrating part I enjoyed the game

When and where?. Loved DQ1-3 on IOS. Just got 4 and 5, and will eventually get 6 and I haven’t yet played 8 but do own it. I only have one question. WHERE IS THE BEST GAME IN THE SERIES? WHERE IS SEVEN? It’s the one I played the most in my childhood. Making your own village, solving the gray stone rain, good times. Also, when are you gonna import Dragon Warrior Monsters 1-3 with Coby and Tara’s adventure titles as well.

Generally worth it. The game plays pretty easy, it is definitely a game from the 80’s. And it’s a great casual game to have on your phone to play in downtime. The level progression is strong, where you definitely feel that your character is getting stronger. The bosses where they exist are challenging but not impossible. Really I only have a few negative critiques (but a lot of these are just because of the games age): 1- the game is artificially made longer by the amount of world traveling that’s needed, the goal points that require you to travel between are on opposite sides of the world and the trek is done on foot exclusively. 2- not a single NPC is story compelling in the slightest. Mostly non existent actually. When I think about it the protagonists story is actually very weak as well.. 3- there is no direction to point you from point A To point B. Not that I like games holding my hands, but there is nothing in the game indicating any direction at all to complete the game. It’s quite literally just “to kill the dragon lord” and you’re expected just figure it out yourself. All that aside it still plays pretty nice, it’s a short game and I would say the price is right on the game. You pay for what you get here.

Worth the price. As a Dragon Quest fan it has been a pleasure to play this game on iOS. The quality of the app is very high and the controls work well. My only complaint is that I wish I could quickly close the app and have it create a save state rather than having to do that manually. Lastl, SquareEnix please release an English version of Dragon Quest X! I’ve played it in Japanese and it’s very good I just wish I could understand it. Trust me your leaving money on the table.

Still a great game!. This game was great when it originally came out and it’s value has not diminished over the years. Developers: Please fix the back button, it doesn’t work very when exiting menus.

Thou shalt love this game, if thou art inclined to play. This incarnation captureth all that was the original Dragon Warrior, yet it lacketh a true understanding of Early Modern English. I shall grant thee that ye olde NES game suffered worse. But if it be thine desire to bear witness to a classic for all tyme, then thou shouldst look no further. It be a fantastic adventure for a paltry sum of silver coins. Thy quest awaits thee!

Wonderful with one shortcoming. A faithful adaption of a wonderful game. In addition, this is one of the few ways to play the new “official” translation, which is great. Well suited controls for one-handed play for while on transit. Only one major complaint: the game will override any other audio from other apps, even with the game music turned off. Sometimes you just want to listen to podcasts while grinding!

Could really use a couple new basic features. Like controller support and cloud save so you can play on your iPad , pick up where you left off on your phone etc. at a minimum some way to back up your save so a move to a new device (Or formatting your device) doesn’t mean losing all the time you’ve put in.

Disappointed. Three stars for a good try. But not the same as the original or at least dragon warrior the American version. The difficulty has been lowered. Monsters are easier to kill, they are not in the traditional locations therefore you can walk farther without danger. Your gear is more powerful so they are easier to kill. In addition, they all give you more gold and XP making the game move along a lot faster. Although I can appreciate that. They also give you a minimap with key loa toons listed. It almost feels like cheating. With auto save included they basically dumbed it down so there is no risk reward involved. You can play 100% mindless. Although this is the case in the original for the last 1/3 of the game when you have to grind for 2+ hours to level up. The beginning 2/3 requires you to fight with caution and conserve gold to get ahead. One misstep and 1/2 your gold gone and your back to the castle. May seem rough to the new guys. But back in the day it was normal for games to be rough if you missed stepped. Wasted 2.99 for a sub par experience of the original.

This is classic RPG gaming!!. I freaking love this game!! The quick save and auto save features reduce difficulty but it also reduces a lot of frustration and wasted game play! Purists, get over it! Lol. I’m so glad they put these on iOS! I’m now beating the whole series!

Nicely done. Played on iPad... 2021. No problems at all. Game is shorter than I recall but still a great classic. Around 7-10hrs to complete. You do have to grind exp at three points in the game. Need your heal more spell plus your level does effect your power unlike any other rpg I recall. Beat the game at lvl 26 with ease. At a $3 price point hard to pass this one up. Additional comments: developers made the game too easy by highlighting items on ground that needed to be found. Technically you didn’t “look” for anything, just picked it up.

An amazing game. This is an outstanding game. It's a short, basic game, yet fun and nice. Nothing too hard, nothing too easy. It was something I thoroughly enjoyed playing again and even a second time. It's s classic and a great one at that. My only problem is that you can listen to music as you play the game. The game just shuts out music entirely. Maybe make the game cheaper as well since it also doesn't have that much of a replayability to it, nor is it a long game. I beat it in a week. Maybe ¢99 or $1.99 is a good price. But other than that, the game itself is great.

Well done!. The bad: This is Dragon Quest not Dragon Warrior so it’s more anime and less barbarian. Same music but updated, I don’t like it, I wish it would’ve stayed like the old NES version. The name of some enemies, items and spells is different, don’t like that either. The good: It’s the same game feel, missions and objective. I really love this game. They did a great job making this for the iPhone, the 8-bit texture is spot on. They used the same bad guys from the original game so it brought back a lot of memories. Fantastic work!

Needs landscape mode. The game is good, if dated. The worst part to modern gamers will be the required grinding before you can beat the final boss. The game can only be played in portrait, which some phone users might not mind, but as someone who plays exclusively on tablet I find it highly annoying. The Final Fantasy ports are much better for no other reason than they are landscape games, which better fits how the game was actually designed

Great game - keeps crashing. I’m level 15, and about at the town furthest south, and for some reason the music will cut out every now and again, and when that happens I know the next monster I engage with or town I enter or leave will result in my game freezing. It was a great game up to this point, but considering the fact that you have to save at the castle (which I do think is a nice old-school RPG touch), it just isn’t playable. I’m going to take a break from the game and see if the issue fixes itself.

Button Bug fixed in latest release. I notified Square Enix of the issue in this game when I contacted them about the same one in Dragon Quest 3. The support ticket was escalated with a fix on the App Store a few days later. Kudos to the app developers on fixing this! What issue was: Broken back button and button for switching directional pad on iOS 11 + iPhone SE. App works ok on iOS 9 + iPhone 4S This game is a classic RPG and the Portrait oriented UI and touch controls work well too. Treat yourself and get this app.

Dragon Warrior 4 life… ;). The Dragon Warrior that came with my Nintendo Power magazine changed my childhood. My curiosity turned into creativity. I have never stoped trying to create simple JRPG games on paper or with simple software. I played this game with my young kiddos again here nearly 30 years later. It was so much fun to do it on the floor with them… taking turns with battles and navigation. I highly recommend sitting down with a kiddo in your life with this OG JPRG. Cheers

Still love it, and kids love it!. This was my favorite game as a kid and was adapted beautifully for mobile. My kids love the series now and asked me to write this review with two suggestions (for the series in general). Please consider adding a visual customization for the hero and please consider bringing a version of dragon quest builder to mobile. Thanks for a great experience!

This Game is The perfect JRPG on Mobile. If I only had one complaint Is that the game doesn’t let you listen to outside media while playing and the game goes into an infinite loading loop if you attempt to. But Oh my gosh this game is a masterpiece

This is a great old game but . . .. I liked this game but it only took me about 20 hours of playing time to beat. I booted up my old Nintendo and looked at the original Dragon Quesr/Warrior game and I found that the old Nintendo game was substantially harder than this game. You really have to be an idiot to not finish this game it is too easy.

Fun playing through this classic on iOS!. My first Dragon Quest game was VIII but when I saw the iOS adapt d version for $.99, I had to give it a try. For what it is and it's price, it's a great game to play for historical fun. Obviously, don't expect to much since this is a direct port of an old, NES/Famicom classic from the 80s but it's still fun regardless. I decided to write a nee review today because I'm also glad to see that SE is taking the time to keep their older iOS library up to date so that their software can work for iOS 10 and beyond. Of course, I launched my old save just to be sure everything is working properly. After a few minutes of game play, everything sounds and looks great! Thanks SE for releasing awesome games from your past. Now, what's it going to take to get a re-release of Rad Racer? ;)

Excellent port. This was one of my favorite NES games as a kid and this port is great. Easy to play one handed on the touch screen. A few enemy names are odd but other than that everything is spot on. A great pick up, going to try 2&3

Extremely dumbed down from original. Too easy. Fly through early levels without even taking a single hp of damage. Monsters drop way too much gold to leave even the slightest hint of a challenge. And the dungeon maps are not the same as the original. No challenge at all to this version, not even worth the time.

Great Old Game. Faithfully reproduces the classic RPG: Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior for those of us here in America who discovered the game on NES). This version is similar to the GameBoy version. They did add a "quick save" function that is amazing, especially for mobile devices. All the monsters seem to be there along with all the items, including that cursed belt. The quick save function does make you less cautious because you can always just reload if you run into a scorpion before you learn Sizz (or Blaze), but the save function is definitely needed for mobile gaming. Amazing addition to any lover of classic RPGs!

Hated the over use of Old English.... This is one of the greatest games ever made. I played it in 1989 and beat it, and have been hooked on JRPGs ever since. I have played through twice since on other platforms and loved it. However, the use of Old English in here was not only over the top, but just flat out unnecessary. I felt like I needed subtitles... The controls were pretty good, but I like an actual ACTION button to press. But the graphics were just beautiful - not too smooth, pixellated just right. I wish I could apply a language patch to this wonderful game so I could enjoy it again... a patch that translates Old English to modern English.

Great game. It was definitely worth the money and I love the game. My only complaint is that it took me less than a week to get through the entire game. That's my own fault though

Still great, but could use controller support. Love the updates and I still replay this game (both of the original trilogies actually) routinely on my phone. They’re actually darn near perfect for mobile gaming, but controller support would still be a nice touch even though it’s not explicitly needed (for 1-6 at least).

Bug fixed :). Thankfully, an update was just released that fixed the back button being untappable on iPhone 6 devices. This is probably the best was to play the game, good job devs.

Enjoyable, but not Amazing. All works well. Hero's Journey: gather three artifacts, rescue the maiden, Gwendolyn, and defeat the Dragon Lord. It took me about six hours to complete the game. I did have to look up where the sunshine stone was after searching everywhere that was accessible. Luckily it was extremely easy to obtain at that point! All of the other puzzles were mostly straightforward. My only complaint is that the game is extremely short. I'm okay with the story, straightforward as it is.

Just like old times. Yes it was modified for people to beat easier. People don’t have the time to play games like they used to. It still has grinding like it used to but you level faster. That being said, I love this game, still one of my favorites. Buy it.

Old school JRPG with a simple charm. Dragon Quest is as traditional as you can get with it's simple animations, pixel sprite graphics and a straight forward turn-based battle mechanic. It doesn't have a whole lot of complexity or strategy when monsters and villains are pitted against your courageous hero. However this same simplicity acts as both a reminder of how far we've come in terms of advancing the JRPG genre and also allows the game to easily transition into mobile gaming. Pros - You can save your game progress anywhere at anytime - Colorful pixel sprites - Hilariously funny and cute monster design - Easy to use controls suitable for one handed mobile gaming - Beautiful orchestral soundtrack Cons - Quite a bit of grinding is involved to afford new equipment and learn new abilities - Frequency of random enemy encounters can be grating during long play sections Final words A very simple RPG mechanically, yet still very much enjoyable with it's colorful presentation, graceful music and charming revitalisation of an old classic.

Simplistic but fun. Pretty simplistic old turn based RPG but worth it for the price if you're into the genre. The controls have been optimised really well and the game can easily be played with one hand - making it a great time killer on public transport etc.

Poor quality port. The visuals are all distorted, the pixel art is rendered incorrectly.

A True Classic. A great game which sets the backdrop for Dragon Quest Builders. Works perfectly on iPhone 5S.

Great game. Crashes quite frequently, but I still need to play it.

Faithful update to a legendary classic. Not only did this game start an iconic series, but it also spawned a genre of games. The grand daddy of Final Fantasy, Star Ocean and Tales of series. The mechanics are quite dated, but if you appreciate old school charm this is the best way to appreciate a moment in gaming history. Fans of the NES classic will find a more modern and consistent translation and some nice quality of life improvements such as a contextual action button and redesigned menus. Has a save anywhere feature in addition to the classic save system for on-the-go grinding when you have some free moments.

Classic RPG. Any RPG fan should play this game and learn where it all began

Good faithful recreation of a classic that defined a genre. This is how to do a remake keep truthful to what it was and give it a coat to keep it fresh as is what happened here same gameplay elements (with the new one hand control scheme that works surprisingly brilliant) and update the graphics to look better then they first did but retain a classic vibe it'll probably be the graphics thatll put "graphics freaks" off because this game was released in 1986 in the 8-bit era but the graphics have been improved to look somewhere in between 16-bit and 32-bit graphics one for rpg fans anyone else will have to see where it came from to appreciate where it came from.... Beat the game now and wow I still love it what I want in the next update maybe a tad pushy but square is a massive company so what I want in the next update 1. The option to switch between the new revised graphics and the original NES graphics (for nostalgia) 2. An In game encyclopaedia on the monster (it can be done because they did it for final fantasy all the bravest and that had more then 90 monsters) If even one of these was done I'd be happy (preferably retro graphics) otherwise this is my favourite (and most addictive) game on my iPod 4th gen and also it's good to see that there's no frame-rate or stability issues on this (considered) old device.

This is where it all started. This is a great remake compared to the retranslated version on the snes. Better music and graphics. A great choice for rpg fans.

Simply amazing!. I had never played the original Dragon Quest, but after this, I can now be classified as a fan of the series! Fabulous RPG

Full screen please.. Great but needs full screen. There's black bars on the edge of screen going up since game is played in portrait on iPad. Please update to at least be able to stretch screen horizontal to be full no black bars.

Great. There's lots of quests to do it will keep you busy. Great game.

Good game to play again. I played Dragon Quest I nearly 30 years ago and when I've played it again on iPhone, it's still one of my favour!

Great game. Loved this game as a kid like it now only two problems I have found so far is that my character MP doesn’t go up when it levels up and every time I log back in the character level goes back to level 4 can this be fixed

Awesome. I'm so glad I decided to check out the app store yesterday! I loved this game when I originally played it, and the revamp makes it even better. Although... This time I managed to clear it in a few hours, although it used to take me a few days...? Oh well, it was worth it. I hope they'll publish the 2nd and 3rd installment as well!

My first nes game!. A bit better graphics, but I'm really enjoying it again!

Stable, adapted, nostalgic.. Probably been 30 years since I played this. Great trip down memory lane. Quick game, very much like I remembered it.

The Game that started it all. Great game! This game is a must for any Iphone owners that like Jrpgs. Controls are amazing. For 2.99$ you can't go wrong.

Classic game. This is one of the earliest RPGs ever released on consoles, and it's still fun to play. The grind has been softened up fairly significantly, which I liked. There are some small tweaks to the game, like the inclusion of stat-boosting seeds, but for the most part the game hasn't changed. The graphical and audio overhaul is nice. If you want a fun, old school RPG, you can't go wrong with Dragon Quest for the price of a cup of coffee.

Great classic. Great RPG from the old NES days. It loses a star for no cloud save, though.

Dragon warrior forever!. Awesome!! I love RPGs and this is the game that started it all. Game works great!

Kinda barebone. -no option for original 8bit music or graphics -support for traditional Chinese but not for simplified -virtual gamepad in the way + very cheap + a classic + looks gorgeous

Fantastic Throwback. Beat this game in about 10 hours give or take, the graphics are lacking obviously because of the games age, but the story is solid and it really brings you back to your childhood roots of gaming. Dragon Quest II, here I come!

No controller support. No controller support while the original game has it? Only portrait mode and no landscape mode? This is a terrible port Square Enix.

Epic Series!. I havent played this one but ive beaten 4 5 and 9 So this should be fun!

I wonder how many reviewers replayed it as an adult. This game I loved as a kid. As an adult? Not so much. There is hardly any plot. The enemy sprites just get recycled with different colours. Grind. Grind. Grind. Grind. Grind. Just to safely cross a bridge. To grind. Grind. Grind again. Supposedly they sped levelling up in this version? How bad was it before?

Love this game!. It’s a classic and exactly how I remember it! Thank you for bringing this series to iPad/iPhone!!!!

Worlds first open world RPG!. I purchased this on Friday and had it wrapped by Mid-Monday. I remember my friend Daryl owned this game and I owned Final Fantasy two of the best NES games ever! I revisited my youth with this title and I'm sure you will enjoy this classic, cheers!

Controls just unbearable. Sadly the 4 axis controls are just the worst on ios, too bad don’t waste your money on this.

Epic. All time best RPG game ever

Great game.. Great game. Played the original for NES in the day. Nice redux.

In between calls. Amazing little rpg. Purchased on my phone to play in between calls (working as an admin) and it's easy to pick up and put down. Great to grind here and there to fill the time gaps. Easy and simple game

Old Memory, Old fun .... Really fun to replay that old game who is the first who start that kind of RPG ....

Great for dads of newborns. Great game that plays beautifully even when you have only 1 free hand. I have two newborn twins at home and this game is a real lifesaver when I'm feeding a bottle. Recommended to everyone but especially new parents who need to squeeze in a few minutes of gaming without too much effort.

Love it!. This takes me back. I loved playing this game as a kid and i love playing it now. I wish i could change it to classic NES 8 bit graphics for full nostalgia. Worth buying for a piece of dragon quest history.

iCloud game save.. Great game, it will be even better if we could save our games on iCloud and then play with iPhone and iPad.

Why can’t I have music or YouTube in the background!. I love the game but the game stops completely after a battle or a prompt when I have music or YouTube playing. It’s annoying to have to restart my game for this.

Great port, CLASSIC GAME!. I don’t know why I started craving to play this game, but they did a fantastic job on this! Worth the couple dollars! The game was such an OG little turn based game, if you are like in your 30s and loved this as a kid, it’s great! Newer gens, will be hit and miss! Thanks so much!!

Updated classic!. Great and lots of childhood memories

Great :). I've never played this game before. I wanted to start this before I play the other ones. Well here it goes. :)

Good game. Touch controls actually work Doesn't crash on old iPod touch 4th gen Updated graphics and translations!

Good game, not so on iPhone 5s. Game constantly crashes on iPhone 5s making it in playable

Worth every penny. Super great port, especial for a nostalgia nerd like myself. I miss the old sprites and original translation, but still loved playing through.

FINALLY!! 😃. I used to play this game as Dragon Warrior and have been waiting and hoping for years (since the iPhone 3G came to Canada) that it would become an iPhone game! Countless times have I searched the App Store for this game. Whoever is responsible for making this happen, Thank You, sincerely.

A great game. I have really been enjoying this game. The price is right and the port is pretty good. I have never played the original, so I am not sure if this is a new feature or not, but when you die you just start at the beginning of the game with all your progress saved, this has made the game really enjoyable to play because dying still sucks but I am not worried about losing 30 minutes of progress when it does happen! Thanks Square Enix!

Great game. Wish it would come out for Apple TV 4 though.

The problem is the controls. / Le problème c’est les contrôles.. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Dragon Quest. I’ve played every one of them that have been localized in North America on consoles. I was thrilled to finally be able to play the very first one. But the control pad is such a pain, that I couldn’t even progress properly... It’s a shame. It looked awesome. Comprenez-moi bien, J’ADORE Dragon Quest.

Disappointed. Laggy. The whole experience is not smooth. I want a refund.

I love rpg bro. It is an old game, you don't have an objectives page or a gps i'll remove a stars because the graphics hurt my eyes big time, sadly i won't be able to enjoy it, maybe an option to turn the game with SNES graphics? It was so better that way please and thank you!

Not bad. Great for nostalgia but the color needs to be softened or something. Too much contrast hurts my eyes (ipad). Or could add an in game display settings to adjust to suit the player

Great!. Great game really brought me back

simply the best. This is what I have been looking for. One of the best classic rpg ever made !

Great Game. Simple, but a lot of fun.

Awsome!!!!!. This sure took me back to my childhood. What an awesome game to bring back from the grave. I don't play many games anymore but when I saw this I had to get it. Already finished it. A+++++

Awesome. Want more. Pls bring out dragon quest 2 . I loved playing this game again

Love It. Great game. This iOS version is my introduction to the Dragon Quest series, and now I'm hooked. Currently playing DQ2 🤓

Definitive DQ1 Experience. The definitive version of Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior. The beginning of console style RPGs are right here. Play DQ2, 3, and 4 to see the evolution through the NES era.

Game works again, thanks. Just like the NES game we know and love.

Not bad. The controls aren’t great, and I can’t listen to music in the background. Odd choice. The colour palette could use some softening; the sharp colours and contrasts are jarring.

Wonderful classic title.. Such a joy to play this title from my childhood. No issues with the game play at all on my iPhone 5S so not sure what's up with the other reviewing having crashes on his device. For those that want the nostalgia definitely pick this up. For those who haven't played it or any other old school style RPGs just note that there may be a couple parts where grinding is necessary and you may need to look up where to go or what to do next but it is still a great game. For this price it isn't worth passing up. Now to finish DQIV and then start DQII.

Faithful to the original. Nostalgia overload. The updated sprites are a nice touch. Classic slime killing action.

The screen shots are doctored for a reason. You can only play in portrait not landscape. Seriously SE? Can’t spend the extra few bucks to have the developers port this properly? The ui is half-@**ed if seen cheaper indie mobile rpgs with better ui layouts.

The perfect iPhone RPG. I could almost believe it was designed for the platform. Great gameplay that I would call "streamlined" if I didn't know it was the original! This was the first time I played it on any platform, and I was surprised with how non-linear it was, too.

Dragon Warrior for the NES. This game is everything you want it to be if you’re looking for Dragon Warrior for the NES. This is an amazing game. I loved every minute that I was playing.

Love it. Graphics revamped and looks and plays well my only dislike is I can’t get it to go widescreen

Make it free on phone. So I got this on my iPad and on my phone it cost money and on iPad it’s free make it free on phone pls but over all I love it

Thoroughly enjoyed this classic. Definitely worth the $.99! This is the original JRPG. Loved every level of it.

Loving Port of a Classic ‘80s RPG. You buy the game. You play it. No servers, no log-ins, no in-app purchases, no excessive layers of currencies and pay-to-win mechanics. I had nearly forgotten phone games could be this straightforward. I bought this on a whim after the release of “Hero” in Smash Bros. reminded me of the original game (which was called “Dragon Warrior” in the U.S., in case anyone is looking for that game). Very happy with the purchase. The game itself is very old school. You’ll be doing a lot of grinding, but the touch screen menus make that more tolerable and it’s a decent enough way to pass the time. Most phone games force you into grinding anyway, but suggest you pay money to skip it. In this one you’ll just have to slash away at slimes until you level up to take on better enemies like the old days. The overworld controls are a little goofy, like all phone d-pads, but they get the job done and finesse is not needed in this kind of game. I like the vertical orientation; it makes it easier to switch in and out of the app to do stuff on your phone without having to turn the whole phone. The updated graphics and music give the game a cool SNES vibe. I’d love the option to use the original graphics/music/screen resolution, but I can see how that might be infeasible given the phone layout. In any case, love has clearly been given to this port, and if you like ‘80s JRPGs, this is well worth your $3. I’ll probably play through the series and see if I can convince myself to check out DQ11 for Switch eventually.

No controller support. There is no controller support for this game and you’re also forced to play vertical screen. Classic game but mainly unplayable for me using the onscreen controls. Money for something I’ll never play due to it not being compatible like most games. Suggest that be better stated in the Store.

Honestly a blast. Nothing more to say. Classic JRPG, turn-based fantasy adventure. 10/10. Good stability, no issues (iphone 8, ios 14.8.1, oct 2022)

Still a great game!. This game was great when it originally came out and it’s value has not diminished over the years. Developers: Please fix the back button, it doesn’t work very when exiting menus.

Language. Good Game, but how to choose traditional Chinese? There is no language selection

Start to finish. I couldn’t put it down it’s just fun at what it does perfect for mobile

Great update to Dragon Warrior/Quest. The only thing this and all if the Dragon Quest updates needs is CONTROLLER SUPPORT. I have a blue tooth controller that I would to use with these games.

Fun, but disappointing. I was excited to see a bug fix update. After all this time, what bugs did they fix? Well, not the non-integer scaling bug. Basically the game is rendered to a weird internal resolution such that the ratio of the internal resolution to the actual resolution is not an integer, and this results in the very ugly game art. Which is sad, because the new artwork looks like it’d be pretty good otherwise, and of course the music is the best that Dragon Quest 1 has ever sounded. Maybe next update.

Just awful controls. I have no idea why this is rated so highly. Great game, but the controls are so miserable... There are many, many better ways to play this game.

Fantastic port!. Easy smooth controls, nice updated images, quick save. Overall a great port and perfect for a dad like me that only has brief moments for gaming. Love it!

Audio does not work. Just got my iPhone 8 Plus and this app produces no sound on my phone please fix.

Bug. Game just freezes after a battle if you are listening to something in the background

Blast from the past. This is just like a remember from the NES, just with improved graphics and music. Such classic RPG.

A much needed update to the OG. Let’s be honest, having to select STAIRS was the worst back in the [NES] day. This is a great game. Love it.

Seriously Portrait mode?. Honestly unplayable why would you only allow it in portrait mode when the ff series is in landscape ? Absolutely a waste of money.

I love it but. I would love to see this series support landscape mode.

No sound. I have a iPhone 13 pro max , an the sound doesn’t work an or controller support

Great on IPhone XR!. Dragon quest 1-3 runs and looks great on iPhone XR. Please update DQ 4-6 to take advantage of the bigger screens

SE's inconsistent language support. Best: games that let you choose the language in-game, and support the original Japanese Next best: games that run in Japanese when ios is set to Japanese Worst: no support for Japanese whatsoever, which is what they chose to do for the DQ series. It's unfortunate because I'd buy them all if they picked either of the two above.

Please bring this to Xbox One!!. I’d pay $60 for this on Xbox One and Final Fantasy 4 (FF2 on SNES) too. Please!!!!

A solid remastering; some bugs. A great JRPG classic brought forward in time with some good polish. Unfortunately, the game has a few bugs that can break it pretty easily. Try not to lock your device while using the app.

Reliving a classic and a trip down memory lane. The first RPG I ever sat down to play back when it released on the NES. Great game and now my 7 year old son is hooked as I was 30 years ago!

Pretty solid. I got into dragon quest 11 last year and was curious about the previous ones. Considering this is the port/remaster of the 1985 version it’s pretty good and I’m happy with it.

Bugfixes Needed. I want to love this game. The controls and scenario make it a good pick-up-and-play game for mobile. However, the game freezes on the victory tune after most battles, even with the game sound turned off. I can’t play it. Would be 5* with this fixed

No controller support. No controller support. And can’t play in landscape mode on iPad, which makes it very tedious to play on the iPad. These are two simple fixes. I hope they can update the game

Freeze after battles. I haven’t been able to play. It freezes after nearly every battle on the text saying victory. Ok so I think the problem is listening to music while playing and not sure why that messes it up.

Don’t ever delete it from your phone.. I upgraded from iPhone 8 to an Xs and it deleted my game save, I was having a lot of fun but no way I want to grind back up to level 15 again. iCloud support would have been nice:

Just like yesterday. A great game, just like when I was a kid , have no issues using iPad Air 2, thank you for the retro nostalgia maxima

One of the best RPGs ever created:. I just finished the game. Square Enix, thank you for this gem.

You have got to be kidding me.. Can’t listen to music while playing the game or it freezes after battle...huge bummer. But the game works although I kept it muted because...listen for yourself and you’ll see why.

Can’t save. I would really love to rate this 5 stars however it won’t create a save file for me. I’ll go to the save at the king and also do the quick save but when I close the game and come back I don’t have a save file.

A surprisingly good port. It’s a perfect way to fill small gaps of free time with.

I don't think I'll ever play this again. I got so far in the beginning of the game until there was a save bug and I had to start further back. What a disappointment!

No iCloud saves. I own iPad & iPhone. Can’t move saves between them. Great game but can’t rank higher since they won’t support a basic function. Also landscape mode would be nice.

This Game is The perfect JRPG on Mobile. If I only had one complaint Is that the game doesn’t let you listen to outside media while playing and the game goes into an infinite loading loop if you attempt to. But Oh my gosh this game is a masterpiece

Won’t save games!!. I’ve tried 5 times to save a game where I get good weapons n good shields but then it’s not saved the next time I play even though it’s Saved??!!

Has no Sound!. latest ios updated settings checked. this game has no sound. very unimpressed

Great Blast to the Past. Works perfectly on the iPhone. The game was as fun as I remembered it but I was a lot more efficient this time around. Great for a quick download and can finish in in a long weekend. Cheers.

Classic. My first RPG, still entertaining. Before I downloaded it I wonder how well the controls would work without a controller, it's just fine. I just wish they hadn't decided to rename the spells and some of the monsters, feels weird looking at a wyvern and it being called a chimera. Also casting Zoom instead of return. But realistically the changes are just superficial, the game play is the same, story is the same. Nice trip down memory lane.

Very choppy! To the point where it bothers my eyes.. This game needs an update. It’s very choppy and I know it’s not my hardware. It’s like this on my IPad mini 5 and my iPhone SE second edition. It actually bothers my eyes.

English only!. Ok, says have three different language but I can only find English mode. Do not list other langue options if you don’t. That’s cheating!

Only for completionists. Dragon Quest 1 (Eastern RPG) Beaten: 6-3-23 Platform: Mobile Recommended: Maybe (6/10) - It was okay. Like one reviewer wrote, "This game has aged like both wine and milk." Only recommended for completionists.

Hasn’t aged well. Was great back in the day, but revisiting it has shown its limitations. Very, very grindy and a bit boring. Kinda wish I had left my good memories intact.

Not what I expected. The game itself is good. I don't like that I have to hold my phone straight up and down. Wish it would turn so that I can hold my phone like a controller. Every other game in the world plays horizontally just don't understand.

Favorite NES Title with Important Upgrades. I loved the original Dragon Warrior game on the NES! This game is a basic port to iOS and I've loved every minute playing the game again! IMPORTANT: Increased gold and XP earnings which makes the game less tedious!

Pure Experience. This is just a pure, fun old RPG. If you use a guide, you can beat it in a day.
