IA Writer Comments & Reviews 2026
Go buy other writing apps and save yourself. iA writer is a terrible app. I don’t mean to be mean at all. I just feel obligated to leave a review for other people who wants to try this app. So it has syncing issues, which means it will constantly loose your writings and if it saves any, it will make several copies of writings that you are trying to edit so every time you have to be very careful not to delete anything from the mess that it made in my cloud and look for changes you made and copy it. Worst experience ever. Never had this problem when I used Evernote and Note app. The app just doesn’t save changes and doesn’t know how to do so. What’s the point of using an app at all? Save yourselves and get other apps like Note app. It doesn’t support markdown but Note app never loose anything. UPDATE: Thank you for replying on my review. The cloud I am referring to is not just iCloud. I also mean Dropbox. Please don’t make it look like Apple’s doing wrong. I had so much troubles because of your app. Not because I am doing something wrong or Apple’s doing wrong but your app is so buggy.
Exceptional Writer’s Application. Have used iA Writer from it’s beginning because it is what I want from such an application. The developers have taken a balanced and selective approach with the features they’ve chosen to add to updates always maintaining the app’s original intention and not disrupting the user’s experience with unnecessary UX bloat. While there are many of customizable tools and features in the settings, they are focused on writing production without being overwhelming, allowing the user to decide what they need to use. Ability to handle Markdown, can now generate PDF, compatibility with Shortcuts, simple switching option between edit and preview mode and syncs through iCloud which makes using iA on the desktop seamless or vice versa.
I’m not much of a writer, but I know what I like. I’ve tried various different apps, but this is the one that fits me the best. I love the typewriter mode so everything I’m writing and working on *right now* is in the middle of the screen. No futzing around looking for my cursor or pushing words up from the bottom of the screen. When I want to write, I just need to keep moving a cursor to the right and keep things flowing without thinking about the app, the environment, how many things it supports, and all that. If you’re looking to put text on a screen using an iPad, this is your app.
Quality. I know $30 feels steep but hear me out. If you’re like me, finding a good writing app is like trying to find your soulmate—a romantic idea but logically unlikely if not impossible. I’ve cycled through many writing apps: Scrivener, Final Draft, you name it. The good news is this app is The One. The user interface is intuitive and helps to keep words flowing across the screen. This delivers. I also like to go back into my work to do analysis with diction and some invasive editing. This delivers. I had some technical difficulties on my end, not the app’s, and their support helped me resolve my problems without redirecting me to an FAQ and without using condescending language—they were compassionate, thorough, and helpful in a way that was worth well beyond $30. The incredible customer service is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what you’re getting with this app. I really couldn’t be more satisfied by my experiences with this app and the people that support it; I highly recommend this app for its effectiveness, versatility, and stellar customer support.
Great. I’ve been using this app for a month or so. I’m in an MBA program (almost done) and about to start writing my capstone project. I like this app because it’s simple, large documents are quick to load, and it has some functionality for bloggers who prefer to write in Markdown and not be stuck using their blogging platform’s writing tools. I also love not having to add another subscription to my credit card every month. I would like to request an Apple Watch app, even if it’s just read-only, because I have to refer to some quick documents from time to time while I’m in a meeting, class, or out and about, and if I don’t have to pull out my phone or iPad these days for tasks, I don’t.
Not bad, but ignores system font size setting. I like the file browser aka organizer in this app. but it's not as easy to use as it should be because the application ignores the user's font size preferences in the system settings. When I pointed out this glaring omission for the MacOS app, their support gaslit me, claiming they follow Apple's conventions and using Notes as an example. But Notes respects the user's text-size preference in the system settings. Other decent apps do too, but iA Writer does not. Referring me to other accessibility features of the OS is not a reasonable answer for an app that has been around this long. If you've got 20/20 vision, none of this will matter to you, unless you're sharing with a family member who doesn't. Regardless, designs should accommodate different users at least to the extent that the OS does.
Worth every cent. I almost never write reviews, but this was warranted. With my upgrade to iPad Pro 11, I lost access to my usual writing app and tried many replacements, each with their own perks and faults. I’m writing this from the perspective of an amateur writer. This app didn’t have a trial for iOS, so I wrote in to inquire how it operates. Not only was the reply quick and friendly, it was very concise and helpful, addressing each of my questions individually. I have full confidence if anyone using this app needs assistance, they will reach someone ready and eager to help with any problem. If you’re like me, accustomed to having certain tools, their site answers almost any question and they will be happy to answer anything that may concern you. As for the app itself, it is very simple for my needs as a hobby writer. The tools available aren’t confusing or unnecessary if your primary goal is to just write. There aren’t dozens of tolls for changing font colours, or random size changes, or super fancy fonts. It’s minimalistic but not to a detriment, something a lot of apps for writing tend to over complicate. It’s almost like writing in a notebook, but with the ability to have access to spellcheck, find/replace, even a dictionary right at your fingertips. For the price of the app, I believe it’s worth every cent, with no recurring payments. For more experienced writers, there are plenty of tools to make your life easier, as well. If you are looking for an app to just write without the fuss of experimenting with tons of buttons and tools, this is perfect.
beyond my needs. I have been using the older version and had decided to pop $5 for the upgrade. It seemed to work well enough at first. Then I tried to transfer files from my older version it did not work. No big deal, so I wrote a small piece of nonsense and tried to transfer it to Pages. I could find no way to do this. I do not have Microsoft Word as that costs and Pages sufficiently polishes my prose. I should have kept it simple. I have since sent this app to the clouds. I would appreciate it if I could get my five dollars back. This all happened on my iPad Pro. Pages is on this machine too. I can understand you wanting to think big, but my needs are small. I have gotten rid of file savers as they have gotten so complicated I could not find where what it is I had sent landed. Look out Dropbox.
Perfect in every way. Still the best after over a decade. I’ve been using this as my main writing and note taking app since it first came out. I’ve used many other apps both by Apple and other popular ones and this one is somehow the most powerful yet simplest at the same time. Below I’m leaving a copy of my last review from a year or two ago. Solid writing app. You write. It helps you write better. Forces you to focus. Gives you freedom to organize documents how you like. It even lets you tag or just link to other documents to create your own personal wiki. I’ve tried other apps like Obsidian that have some of these features but there are just too many menus and options. This does everything you need and want in a way that keeps you from getting distracted. It’s like having an old fashioned typewriter that has the added benefit of helping you with style and organization. Writing and text is the most important way humans communicate and information architects understand this.
Font Experiment Spoils Perfect App. The latest update removes the primary font the app has used for almost a decade. It’s not an option, just gone, replaced by a typography experiment that may be worthy but would be better left as an option or for a graduate thesis project. The fonts, a modification of IBM Plex, are a clear downgrade. While that is my subjective opinion, it seems objectively strange to remove the typeface that this app has championed for so long. Writer debuted with the premise of few if any user preferences. It was a welcomed change to writing environments muddied with options. But what happens when the user has limited preferences and the creators’ unlimited? This: an app that is otherwise perfect but now rendered unusable. I will return to Writer when the original font is brought back as an option.
I love iA Writer. I have been using Apple Notes, Pages, and Word for writing. I hate the black on bright white background. I needed change. I needed to get rid of the junk. I needed clarity. I guess, I just needed iA. I use it on my iPad Pro with the Apple keyboard, iPhone X with a BT keyboard, and iMac. I love that it syncs quickly (although not as quickly as Apple Notes). Here’s my beef with Information Architects GmbH. It costs me $5 to use iA Writer on *both* my iPad and iPhone. Five dollars. That’s it. But to install it on my iMac, they want $30? That’s six times more the price for the exact same app and functionality. Why is this? Because their competition charges $30 or more for it, so they play along. It’s just price gouging, and that’s why you only get 4 stars. With that being said, I love this app. It has given me new life to writing, and has features that I never knew I wanted. From my iOS devices to my MacOS devices, it is incredible. I just use iCloud sync (works great), and have tested out WordPress publishing (also works great).
Update. EDIT: THANO YOU! It worked! I think the old method should remain a default so nobody runs into the same problem I did. I never would’ve found that on my own. Thanks! New review: when i tap a folder it doesnt open it to make a note inside it anymore. It just turns it into dropdown, and not even an option to make a note inside the folder. I have to press and hold, which is longer. Please fix this back to the way it was. || Old review: Please low pictures to be inserted in documents stored locally. Thank you! ;-; Also could you maybe allow linking to images via html in documents that are stored locally? I try to link to an image stored on my site but it doesn’t show up in the preview. It’s blank. Thank you. Also it would be nice to allow .docx open format that wordpad uses!
This app is essential for writing!. For authors, it is critical to convey your ideas and thoughts with focus and ease. I write at home and work, day or night, desk or couch or bed. iA Writer is my primary tool and it is so easy to use. I am very technically inclined and have no problem diving into new powerful apps, but when I want to write, I need just two things: comfort and lack of distraction. With this app, I am able to write as I need and in the way that I need. I need my page to be black with white text because I often write at night and don’t want to disturb my family or strain my eyes. The text is easily modified to my needs, and the tools provided within the app are nondistracting and can be turned off until I need them. While the app offers the most simple and direct interface, it has features and tools that are very powerful and useful. An additional feature that I love is how it synchronises to the cloud, so I can write on my phone (Yes, I use my iPhone 7) and I can go to my laptop and there it is. The in-app hierarchical folder allows me to write chapters a book within the book series, without having to go to the operating system folder. Super useful! I fully recommend this app.
Lovely but flawed (if you use Dropbox). I was delighted by this app right up until I lost data, which happened almost immediately. I was editing a file stored in my Dropbox, switched to another app, and when I came back the last few changes I'd made were gone. This has happened to me several times in just a few hours of using the app. Whatever the underlying issue is, it also seems to cause crashes, and sometimes the app is unable to start up again. I've seen a couple of replies from the developers in here in which they claim that cloud sync issues are essentially out of their hands. Yet, other apps don't seem to have the same issues. For instance, I've been using Scrivener on iOS for a year or two, storing files in Dropbox, and I've never, ever lost data. I'm sure it's a pain to get this right for all the different cloud services, and I have no idea what constraints the developers are working under. But Dropbox integration is critical to me, and I verified that the app supported Dropbox before I bought it. Now that I'm trying to use it, though, it seems very broken, to the point that I can't trust it with my data. I really wish I could use this app, but I don't think I can until the Dropbox support improves. This three-star rating is just because it doesn't do what it says on the tin; if it ever does get functional Dropbox support, I will be happy to come back and use it, and I think it will be worthy of five stars.
Great, lightweight writing app. I love the simplicity of this app!I have never used markdown or any markdown text editing apps, so take my review with that in mind. I am also using the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard Case to type with this app. The focus mode is nice, and I like that it has some buttons for markdown ready on the bottom right corner, like inserting a link. I wish there was a way to edit the size of photos or images, but I suppose this app isn’t made for that kind of thing. One gripe I have that I hope gets fixed in a future update, is that sometimes when I write... the screen keeps moving up and down in little increments with each letter that I type out, which makes it very distracting when I write (even when I’m in focus mode). It’s like someone is constantly wobbling my screen up and down when I type. If this bug could be fixed (it’s a bug, certainly not a feature) then I’d give it 5 stars. I’m also a little disappointed cause I paid for the app and it seems to have this problem, but I know that there is always an opportunity for the developers to update it so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I would also love it if it had Google Drive or One Drive sync (as in, I could save directly onto Google drive instead of just pulling from it).
Nice app for quick writing. I've tried several writing programs including Ulysses, ByWord, and Scrivener. I gave up on Ulysses after they went to subscription model. ByWord is very nice app, and I support it greatly, but I really want file management within an app, not outside of it. I also want a program that quickly starts and is ready to start writing. ByWord needs interaction (just a click) and Scrivener is a true word processor, so it seems I needed a program for some quick and random notes. Apple Notes is also nice, but I like the idea of being able to back up actually files, Apple Notes concerned me a bit about this. Apple Notes doesn’t feel like a writing program either, that’s just my opinion. So far, IA Writer has been solid. It types quickly and it helps me maintain my writing flow. I do wish we could rearrange files manually in any order we wanted to. I also miss a feature that Scrivener and Ulysses both have which is the ability to select multiple files and see/edit them as one long file.
Pluses and Minuses. There are some really great features to this app. Once I figured it out, the library is easy to use. It’s a generally intuitive and minimal interface which lets me do what I need to do without a lot of fuss. On the other hand, there are some not so great features too. Once you type enough text to fill your window, I can’t find a way to make the text I’m working on appear anywhere except the very bottom of the screen. This is super annoying when anything is popping up, such as the menu bar for the keyboard. If that’s open, I literally can’t see what I’m writing. But the worst is the autocorrect function which makes really strange guesses as to what I am trying to say. For example, mistyping “library” as “librarar” was autocorrected to “kindest.” ???? As I’m typing this review, that same spelling was autocorrected to “librarian” which makes a lot more sense.
Worth the money for a plaintext markdown editor. I’ve been frustrated with almost every WYSIWIG text editor on an iPad. It takes me out of my flow when I have to find the emphasis or list options when I really need to be focused on text generation. iA Writer does it for me. I knew about Markdown but hadn’t found an editor as polished for this purpose until this one. Being able to take notes and emphasize text in-line and not missing a beat has been wonderful. As well, the fact that files are still good old plain text with small file sizes that I could fit on a *floppy disk* if I wanted is wonderful. It’s worth the price, and worth the price across multiple platforms.
Pretty good, best feature is full Files support. Update: developers respond. My complaints, below, turn out to be due to a difference in philosophy with the devs. My four stars remain because I overall find this app less accessible than other similar ios markdown writers. But, I daily drive the app because it’s by far the best one I’ve found for my needs. Your mileage may vary, etc. — I chose this app because it can create and edit my files that are saved in icloud or google docs - just using Files integration. Perfect. Almost works like a “computer.” ;) The big weakness for me is the lack of a true WYSIWYG markdown experience, which my usual markdown app of choice, Obsidian, has. Other apps would let you type “- [ ] content” and then it would transform into just the checkbox when your cursor is somewhere else. Same with asterisks for bold, etc. My preference is to only see the formatting characters when my cursor is on the word. I’ve also noticed a bug where, for some reason, when I type the sentence “hand wash only and…” the word “only” renders as strikethrough in editor mode. It goes away when i switch to read-only, but again I’m used to other apps that negate the need to switch views all the time. I definitely recommend the app overall if anyone, like me, needs a solid markdown app that’s file-system agnostic.
Best writing app on the market!. When I first downloaded iA writer for iOS, I was underwhelmed and quickly requested a refund. After I was unable to find a suitable replacement, I decided to give it another shot, but on my Mac. I quickly realized how many features were available that I wasn’t utilizing. I downloaded the iOS version again and found that it has the same capabilities. Afterwards, I decided to purchase and keep it. iA writer is an a beautiful writing experience. Quattro is one of the best fonts I have used, and the variable replace feature is brilliant. I got into a bad habit of using AI tools like ChatGPT to write for me and I would always get distracted by other apps such as Microsoft Word. iA writer has gotten me back to my roots and has made me a much better and authentic writer. This is one of the most valuable tools I have now, and I own it on iOS, Mac, and Windows. The iA team is committed to what they do, and they do an incredible job. I recommend following their blog! Thank you iA for this wonderful tool. I plan on remaining a customer for life!
The best app for writing!. If you want a simple, straight-forward, no-frills app for writing, this is it. Honestly I’ve grown quite tired of all the complicated/subscription-based writing apps out there. I bought this app years ago and I never had to pay for a subscription or even buy an iA Writer 2. I love that about this app, the one-time purchase is really one-time! I like this app so much that I even bought the iPad version for it, and it is 100% worth it. And that’s not even the best thing about this app. It has an elegant simplicity that’s really quite hard to find in writing apps these days. No need to worry about frivolous features, it’s just pick up and write.
Best Writing Tool, Could Be Better Though!. I love iA Writer, I’ve been using it for years and it’s the sole writing app that I use for everything. The focus mode is amazing and this app makes writing on my iPad a dream. I’m giving this a 5/5 now since it’s been such a great app for so many years, but I’d love to see some extra features for the app. On the iPad, having an easy shortcut to trigger word count would be great. I try to write a certain amount a day and remove the keyboard toolbar so it’s just me and the text. Being able to use a keyboard shortcut to show the word count quickly would help as right now the alternative is clunky and can’t be done just from the keyboard. For macOS, I’d love to see the app be able to go full screen without hiding the notch. I’m one of the few that actually likes the notch and having this be blank in full screen like the iPad would be great. Lastly a true black dark mode option would look great and I’d love this for late night writing sessions. On an OLED screen it’d make it look like the words are floating. Keep up the great work and I hope to see more support for this app!
My go to writing app. This has long been my go-to writing app for MANY years now. One of the key things I enjoy vs other apps is that this app can be as simple as you one or as complex as you want. If you just want a plain writing app with no distractions and no formatting, you can use it that way and it does it well. If you want an app with all sorts of features, mark down, many options and highlights as you type—for narrative writing, technical writing, or coding—this app is also for you. And you can decide as you’re writing. I absolutely love that, love the flexibility, and love the continuous updates and support from the devs. Amazing work!
My favorite text editor, when it’s stable.... Let me start by saying that iA Writer is my favorite app for writing everything from checklists and quick notes to long blog posts. I’ve been using iA Writer basically since iA launched its first iPad app and it’s among my top-3 most-used apps today. Today, I use both the Mac and iOS apps (on my iPhone and iPad Pro), and despite some rare issues with version/syncing conflicts, I’ve so far had a seamless and joyful experience using the app. It’s the app that showed me the full expressive potential of Markdown. This being said, the iOS apps, specifically the current version of the iPhone app, has some serious stability issues. The app crashes whenever I open a new or existing document. It happens regardless of whether my phone is plugged in or on battery power. Thinking it may have been a syncing issue, I tried turning off WiFi and cellular data and it still crashes. I wholeheartedly recommend this app when it’s on a stable release.
Just the writing app I needed. As a longtime business writer and freelance author, iA Writer is just the application I needed to develop and publish a wide variety of material, all without the hassle of having to reformat styles and fonts. For a couple years I’ve been using the app to draft everything from lists and notes to blog posts, long-form articles and essays and even a novel. IA Writer enabled publishing these works with ease, too, whether the final production step was a company website, proprietary CMS, Wordpress site, Word document, PDF or one of a number of other platforms. I use iA Writer daily on a Mac, iPhone and iPad, and for me, there’s no going back.
The Very Best. Hands down the best minimal, focus-driven writing app available. It’s gets out of its own way and mine and lets me get right to writing. Typewriter mode with only the current sentence highlighted is this ADHD writer’s dream. The extra features are nice, but not necessary for me. Just a blinking cursor in the middle of the screen. All my writing starts here, and has for however many years it’s been on iOS. It has been perfect with every update, dependable, and the experience of writing unadulterated can’t be found in any other app. I’d sooner pay this price than some ridiculous monthly subscription, which is a trend in writing apps that needs to die (I’m looking at you, Ulysses). Keep doing what you’re doing, ia writer, and you’ll have me for life.
Almost Perfect for Dungeon Masters. Most of the writing I do is for large D&D campaigns that I work on where there are a lot of small markdown files organized into thematic folders, which this app is perfect for. The writing surface is clean, the lines of text are spaced perfectly and the default duospace font is relaxing to view in both day and night modes, particularly on a large iPad. I also particularly like how the markdown formatting symbols hang outside of the left margin of the text, which makes parsing documents with a lot of formatting much easier. The placement of formatting symbols is not perfectly right aligned outside of the margin, but that is a minor quibble with syntax that is designed to flow inline in a plain text file. Feature Request: The ability to add folders from other applications would make this app absolutely perfect. I use the Working Copy app to push all of my documents to Github and for version control. If iA Writer could add my Working Copy folders to the library, the writing experience and repository workflow would be sublime.
Not worth the price. When theres free stuff out there.. Let me take the hit for you. I mean $30 aint cheap and i am hurt because i felt deceived by the price and pictures and my in ability to not do research. I thought if its for mac os and ios and its editors choice and $30 then it must be good. Haaaaa! Lol trust me when im telling you this is jot worth $30 and it is not gonna help you more than an online service. No it doesnt make a difference if it has a desktop app. It doesnt have anymore capabilities than to see if you extra words. Nothing about grammer or even anything AI. As so they make it seem. So ling story short do not buy this product unless you really like spending money on apps you will eventually forgot you bought because it is not been of help to you. Thats the word on this app.
IAW’s Functional aesthetic. Ia writer seems to have some really nice features that do not superficially viewed seem to threaten stability and IAW devs are scrupulous about maintaining the minimalist functionality which is of course its own aesthetic. Enough said. Much preferred. Chief among its improvements over the years imho is the file management functionality which continues to insist on simplicity of access — such a liberating relief in the ongoing onslaught of the war for the little guy waged between MS Apple and Google … Trampled underfoot our files are of the least concern to them. Signed one who knows— I, too, a writer. :) 2022 ———— Previous review, date unk — Ok I am on ze bus to town it is July 24 there is a beautiful summer rain the typing is insanely quick and alert much improved I really like the iAw system The kB’s expanded functionality with export to pdf among other wonders is just right not too much not too little. Reminds me of my old Mercedes — good choices and restraint It has undo and navigation arrows The side panel is extremely cool In fact for drafting I think the intuitive qualities here make the iOS system the best way to go. Especially if you have a Bluetooth kB. The spacebar double tap makes a period the autocorrect is almost always right the backup and sync and file management features are stable and efficient and finally — memo to google — NO LAGGING
An almost there editor. There are two standard functions this markdown editor does not provide; Table of Contents links do not work with exported PDFs and no Mermaid support. The exported PDF ToC (generated using the {{TOC}} string) sees that the links are present, but are not linked to the sections within the document. So the mouse goes from standard pointer to click to open, but when pressed nothing happens. When it comes to Mermaid support, one might say Mermaid is not Markdown, but Mermaid is so ubiquitous with Markdown it has beccome common place. I see this as intentionally falling sort for serious editing. I hope the team behind iA Writer can address the former and improve with the later.
Inviting Interface. For the act of writing, there is no app I like more than iA Writer. The choice of font, the wide margins, the *white* space—all speak to me, indeed *sing* to me, welcoming me in to a space that is comfortable and warm and energizing. Is it heaven on earth in an app? No, not quite, but the developers have consistently rejected any temptations to bloat the app. Are there bugs? Sure, from time to time—but not often and not major. Does the app ever launch slowly? Not that I can recall. When I press the app icon to call up iA Writer, within two seconds, I have a document at my fingertips, and all I need to do is begin typing. The feeling is amazing. You really should try it.
Definitely worth it!. I have had this app on my laptop since 2023, and while I didn’t use it for a bit, when I started really using it, this past December, it just totally took me by storm. I officially bought the iPhone app in mid-December, and I have to say, I love the seamless syncing to iCloud, and I love the auto-saving feature, as well. I have used this app every day for almost the last six months, and the only thing I regret, is not using it, sooner. Other than that, I regret nothing. Though, there are two changes I would like to be made, such as the “underline” font possibly being added, in addition to bold and italic, and having the option to turn off or turn on the automatic opening of a new document on the Mac app, instead of one always opening automatically by default, when launching it. These are just suggestions, and with or without them, the app is still perfect! Definitely worth the money, to the fullest extent! Update/edit: This is still one of my favorite apps of all time, and through the HTML feature that the app offers, I have figured out how to do the “underline” font, and I have even also figured out how to not have a new document open, when closing the app. Thank you devs for the solution. 🥰
Elegance. This perfectly suited my needs as a touch friendly markdown editor. I was trying to fill my need of a notes app that supports markdown with detailed revision history. Seems simple enough but good luck finding it. But this paired with Working Copy, and Shortcuts Automation is a match made in heaven. The keyboard formatting shortcut customization is also very friendly. Every time I open the app, a shortcut triggers to pull from my remote git repo and every time I close the app it commits the modified files and pushes to the remote repo. Not to mention the standardization of using markdown and being able to add and access the files anywhere across any platform this the best solution for notes IMO.
Good, needs better cloud integration (onedrive, etc), tags support, and TOC sidebar. I tried pretty much all note taking and writing apps available, and I have finally decided to use IA writer. However, i am keeping my notes and writing system as platform agnostic as possible. So, at the moment, I am storing files in OneDrive. Going through the app to get to the location where my note files are stored is a major UI bottleneck. There should be a way to bookmark a location so I can easily add new files in the given location, and search all files and sub files. There are two other features that will make this the absolute best note taking and writing app: - tags. There should be an easy way to add tags and to search through the tags available in the documents in the chosen location. - Table of contents. I know that it’s possible to use {{TOC}} tag to display table of contents, but another app - MWeb goes a step further and shows the Table of contents in the sidebar. Having this feature in this app would further improve the workflow of writing beautifully and in a much more organized manner.
Do NOT trust this app with your writing!. Whatever iA Writer does to sync your text files with iCloud, it does a lousy job of it. It loses text at a frankly unforgivable rate. I've seen it delete chunks of my writing multiple times within the same MINUTE—I write, it deletes, I rewrite, and it deletes again. If you look at the developers' responses to other users who've complained about this on the App Store, it seems they're willing to blame iCloud Sync for this, as if the problem is endemic to Apple's implementation of file synchronization. But other developers have seemingly worked out a solution for this: Bear doesn't lose my files like iA Writer does, and neither did Editorial (RIP). This arrogance on the part of the developers suggests they turn a blind eye to their own failures. At what point does intentional ignorance become functionally equivalent to incompetence? I'm not sure. Perhaps the developers of iA Writer should be asking themselves this question. Fundamental inability to store data aside, iA Writer is a lovely app. File management could be a bit more graceful, but admittedly it's a trickier problem to solve on iOS devices—and the developers seemingly have bigger file-related issues to tackle first. I'd have rated this app four or five stars, but a synchronization issue seems to have wiped a few of them out of existence.
Almost perfect!. This application coupled with an iPad Pro and a magic keyboard have, quite frankly, made my on-the-go writing experience... magical! I’m not a professional by any means, however, as a college student I have had almost nothing to complain about when using this application. My only grievance, you guessed it, is more customization! This means more fonts, more color palettes, and more storage solutions like Google Drive. I totally understand that IA Writer’s aim is to be minimal and focus driven, but more “optional” customization features wouldn’t hurt anyone in my opinion. Overall, this is a wonderful application as is. My only suggestions would be to look into the “show stats” feature as I don’t like how it hangs over your text indefinitely... maybe move the word count to a corner where it doesn’t interfere with your text or perhaps set it to timeout after a few seconds. Also, there’s a wonderful feature labeled “syntax highlight” that I believe shouldn’t be buried within settings but would be of greater use somewhere next to the “aA” button. All the colors hurt my eyes so I never turn it on for long, however, occasionally using the feature helps me identify a myriad of adjectives and nouns to replace without having to read my entire essay again!
Interface is Perfect. I am really into writing in Markdown and have downloaded just about every notes app that supports it. iA writer is one of my main 3 writing apps. The ability to export documents into various formats is one of main reasons I keep coming back to it. iA writer is the only non-free Markdown editor I use but I particularly find that the mobile interface is just more convenient compared to the limitations of Joplin and Simplenote which don’t match their PC equivalents. The fact that iA writer works well with iCloud helps because it means the files are still accessible without being forced to launch the app if I don’t want to.
Simply perfect. “Minimal markdown editors” are all over the place, and at this point are markedly unspecial. iA Writer, however, is noteworthy because of the perfect execution of the UI. It’s distraction-free, of course, but it’s also extremely well-organized and easy to use as an actual writing tool. You can do things like write all of the chapters of a book in separate files, then link them together within one master file with a TOC, and reuse any of those sections wherever you need. You can enter Focus Mode, which can fade out everything outside of the current line or current paragraph. You can add tags in case folders just aren’t good enough. You can customize those shortcuts on top of your keyboard for quick access to the stuff you use most often. You can highlight nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions to easily see if you’re using too much of something. You can do automation with webhooks, like putting your new contacts into a table. There are tons of cool features, and it’s still easy and quick to use. These guys definitely care about good design, and always think of ways to make things better, which makes me really enthused every time this app gets an update. Awesome job!
It’s a great app but—. 2024 edit: this app is great, I recommend it over the other writing apps tbh. 5/5 stars, 10/10 recommend The only feature I think it lacks is an app lock. Either passcode or face ID because without such a feature anyone could access your work & either modify or delete it or simply just invade your privacy. The developer did reach out to me & explain that putting an app lock on this app would be pointless because the plain text files are accessible through file managers, which makes perfect sense. They went on to say that they wouldn’t want to give anyone a false sense of security which is definitely the right thing to do. However, it boggles my mind that there are a plethora of other apps which are focused primarily on text (note taking apps) that can do way more & yet they are able to provide an app lock & iA Writer is not able. What is the reasoning behind that? What I gather is that iA Writer simply doesn’t care for your privacy regardless of their privacy statement.
Text selection, iPad keyboard buggy. Since this is a writing app, it’s important to be able to select sections of text for editing. Unfortunately, text selection seems to not be well implemented on iPhone or iPad. Unlike the text field in other apps like Notes, where you can drag the grab handles to select words or lines of text very precisely, in iA Writer, there’s no precision to the selection. For example, when I drag the grab handle down *slightly* to select the next line of text, the whole view starts scrolling very quickly until the entire document is selected. The same issue happens when using the iOS keyboard-turned-trackpad mechanism. On iPad, things are even worse: in addition to the issues above, whenever I hide the iPad keyboard, the text view jumps to different parts of the document, forcing me to scroll back to where I left off each time. It’s difficult to understand how these kinds of issues were not found/fixed before this app was released.
Everything is excellent, except one small thing :-). Everything about this app is excellent. All the transitions are really instantaneous and latency-free! Unlike Apple's Notes app, the keyboard latency here (something important for fast types) is also excellent. There's no lag between a letter press and its rendering on the screen. This is not a small achievement. My only issue with the app is that in the iPad landscape mode, vertical screen state is very precious. When using iA in landscape, the extra keyboard bar takes a very precious area of state. Combine this with the fact of big fonts and line spacing used by iA (which are lovely), and you get only around 8 lines of text to view while writing, which is quite limited. I wish if an option to minimize (or remove) their keyboard bar exists. A small gesture to minimize that tall bar down would be enough.
The Best. Ever.. If what you want to do is...write, just sit down and write, this is the simplest, most intuitive way. Ever. Using iA Writer harkens back to the best days of the best typewriter you ever had: device, (paper) idea: write. I use an iPad Pro, 10.5”, and the ease and sense of purpose and connection is stunning. I also have iA Writer on the (wretched) iPhone and my MacBook Pro 13”. Again: stunning. I appreciate the ease of sharing across devices, version history, export savvy and essential services this writing tool offers. My one fear is that the developers will tart up the simple approach with bloated, unneeded “improvements,” and render what is a powerful, simple, straight-forward writer’s tool into a gaudy, encrusted dirigible that lifts on bloat and hets in your way.
Great app, well designed. This app makes a lot of decisions for the users, and in my opinion those decisions are pretty good. I know iA was criticized for unclassy moves in the past but I do think this app doesn’t get credit it deserves. Very intuitive and well designed. My only gripe is that it doesn’t handle academic writing very well. The references come out as endnotes rather than footnotes, for example. Even after studying their CSS template guide, I still have no clue how to make simple changes to the templates. (Their own MLA template is not usable for my purposes.) If they can make a simple interface for template-making and simplify things, this app would become much easier to use in professional settings. Right now I use it as a kind of pretty scratchpad.
Great but needs collaborative elements. This is a great app. The way i use it is to formulate templates, Balance elements in each paragraph, and then i used grammerly For spell check. The only complaint i have is The lack of integration in other apps. I mostly use notion these days but some times i still want to proof read in AI and with grammerly but, i dont want to switch from app to app, nor use side card. It would be better if the two businesses collaborated and created extensions from each app with key features. For example, i dont need all three app to be up at the same time. It would be nice to see what nouns, and verbs are present with out leaving notion. It would also be more cohesive if they had the same keyboard extensions, and grammerly wasn’t docked on the on-screen keyboard especially when using a Bluetooth keyboard. I think its possible for all three companies to collaborate in the same way other businesses have been able to with Fleep and slack. Other than that, no complaints
Great writing app but lacks templates feature parity between platforms. I enjoy the simplicity of this markdown app for writing short texts. It helps you focus on composing without distractions. However, the Mac and iOS version lack some very basic features the Windows version and other markdown apps have. This includes collapsable headings to make working with longer texts easier, word count writing goals, and a non-CSS template designer to export work to custom documents without coding. These are essential features IMO and have been requested for years. Their lack of adoption is frustrating for me and prevents me from using this app for longer texts and creating documents.
What I have been searching for.. When Microsoft started pushing copilot and pages turned freemium, I realized I needed to find somewhere safer to keep my personal journal. Thank you for creating this app. Syncing between my Mac and iPhone is seamless. Writing is simple and guides for how to use markdown were incredibly helpful. There are many things I enjoy about this app. The fact that it is a one time purchase and not a subscription is the cherry on top. The only thing that I have noticed was that, on the Mac, the split screen preview doesn’t always show the same spot as where I am typing. I have to continually scroll up and down to figure out where I am in the document. This can be somewhat tedious when editing large documents.
Great Focused Writing App!. I originally bought this app for my windows desktop PC, and I loved it! I use scrivener for bigger projects but sometimes that app can feel overwhelming. I’ve been wanting to buy this for my ipad/iphone but the additional price tag was scary. However, I decided it was worth it as truly enjoy this app and appreciate that it is a one time purchase only. I was previously using Ulysses which is a find app, but it doesn’t look as nice as iAwriter and is a subscription based cost. I dislike subscriptions immensely. So in terms of basic writing this app is great, if I feel the need to plan large works out, I go with scrivener or use this app in combination with obsidian. Thank you to the developers of this app!
Been using this app for years. Fast, simple, reliable. My go-to app for drafting stories on my ipad. Its frequent syncing means I've never lost a word I've typed. I've tried writing apps with more features, but the simplicity and speed of this one has always won out. It is close to being a 5-star app, but I gave it 4 stars because it used to be better. I understand the need for some of the unwanted updates over the years due to iOS changes (like removing dropbox integration -- which has since been re-added, just with a bit more complicated workflow). But there was a toolbar customization which was removed a few years ago for no apparent reason. You could add buttons above the keyboard to navigate and select by word (and, IIRC, paragraph). It was amazing! Selecting and moving text with touch is clumsy and this made writing so much faster. I'm still frustrated and puzzled by the removal of this great feature. However, the reliability of this app means I haven't switched to an app that can do this. And they did leave the ability to go back and forth by a single letter. But I would be thrilled if they considered adding it back in. I do want to report a recent bug: after having the app open for a while, the paste function stops working. I can undo the recent "cut" and don't lose the text. It will work again if I force close and restart the app.
Excellent quality and Outstanding Support. I have been searching for a long time for an editor that works well with voiceover and voice control. Finding a simple text editor shouldn't be this hard. I have considered iA Writer several times over the years but the price discouraged me from tying it. I really wish I had taken a chance years ago when it was much cheaper. However, I don't regret the purchase at its current price point. I'm also impressed with how quickly I got answers from support before I made the purchase. There are several other apps that haven't responded to my requests at all. Even though this editor is designed for markdown, I have had no trouble using it for LaTeX and other plain text file types. Now I can go back to concentrating on my notes and not fighting with the core tools of iOS.
Text bounces up and down. I use this app every day, and I *love* it. But when I have it in typewriter mode (keep the current line in the middle of the screen), it has a maddening bug: the text bounces up when I type a character. When I type the next character, the text moves down. So when I type fast, the text bounces up and down. It doesn’t do it on every paragraph, but it’s probably 50% of the time. I’ve changed the font to no effect. The only solution is to turn off typewriter mode, but then what I’m typing is at the bottom of the screen and hidden behind my hands. So I took off three stars for that because it really subtracts from this wonderful, wonderful editor. Please fix this bug.

Sync not working. The Dropbox sync is still buggy with an error displaying when trying to reopen a document created in the app. Good app otherwise but unusable with my Dropbox workflow. Unstable sync means that you cannot trust the app to save important files.
All essentials for writing anything. This app is a great one time payment for anyone wanting to write anything: note taking, ideation, blog posts, novels, plays and poems. I like the fact that this app has no other unnecessary features like the competition and makes you focus on your most important task at hand : writing. For me, it activates my zen mode because it’s such a joy to write on it. Please keep it subscription-free :)
Love how minimal but powerful it is. Highly recommend!
Awesome. Amazing app which I use all the time across Mac, phone and iPad. Can't fault the amazing customer support either!
Love it.. With a clean, distraction free UI, iA Writer deems itself one of the best, it not the best, writing app on the App Store. Convenient markdown features packed accessibly on a tray above the keyboard, the seamless transition from monospace italics and slashes to a clean, no-nonsense document is just beautiful. One of my favourite features is the reading time count, where I can preview a rough estimate the time it takes to read a document without having to do so myself. Being a school student, I find this extremely handy when it comes to speaking presentations. However, there are a few features I wish I could find on iA. Please add the feature to enable Automatic Night Mode settings, where the dark theme will automatically enable during a certain time span. Great work, Anuja Ariyaratne
Gaensel. This app is ... was a great writing program but it doesn't know if it wants to be a cloud storage app! OR a Writing app. Once had great, file handling, I just want to write which updates have ruined. Another update! This app has got worse! Deleting it once and for all!
Fantastic. New to Markdown though. I’ve given up on storyist 4. Hopeless and disinterested support. When searching for an alternative I found IA WRITER. As a newbie to markdown the app is intuitive and easy to use. I’ve been able to family share the app with my partner. She is my first line editor and so my work flow has been greatly improved. Formatting manuscripts is always a nightmare and this app has done much to reduce my pain. I still have much to learn however. IA Writer is now a part of my daily work flow.
Dropbox integration: technically.. Files on Dropbox must be opened *individually*. No way to link up with a folder within Dropbox. Worthless for my use case.
Can’t Access Cloud Storage in Files. The app has a great UI and is probably worth it, but I am having trouble accessing cloud storage through the files app. When I try to add a location, I can only do so for an SMB share or a local folder. All of my cloud storage providers are greyed out, presumably not given the permission to be used.
Avoid until updated. Constantly crashing; has corrupted multiple documents; avoid until updated.
Good all-round editor and file manager. Generally well thought-out design. You can either use it as a simple text editor and manager, or as a more powerful tool. Syncing works basically flawlessly. The custom keyboard row is super helpful. Receives fairly regular updates.
Fantastic app, has been well-supported for years. Well-supported and devs have been responsible to feedback. Beautifully designed and a pleasure to use for my preferred use which is mainly note-taking.
Poor Dropbox support. Terrific app hamstrung by poor Dropbox support. Works best if one is content with notes being in a sandboxed icloud folder only.
Best Markdown editor I’ve ever used. I started using iA Writer years ago. Every time I try a new markdown editor I’m reminded why iA Writer leads the pack in a crowded field. It gets the little details right. The result is an app that gets ideas from your head into text without a fuss.
good app. Very good
Productivity plus. Fantastic first draft creation software. Pairs well with ipad keyboard attachments. Could use the focus button on screen like the free version has, but that's only a small gripe.
A brilliant tool for writing. I use iA writer daily on my iPad for writing all sorts of stories and more. It does exactly what I need in a writing application. Simple, adaptable, reliable.
Bug report. Saved searches don’t match special characters. # Bug Saved search for matched text ignores special characters. # Reproduce Create a new saved search “@journal”. # Expected output Matches all documents matching “@journal”. # Actual output Matches all documents matching “journal”.
Loving it.. I've used iA Writer for a while now and have tried other writing apps during that time but I always return to this one. Simple in appearance yet powerful in application, iA Writer ticks all of the boxes but one ... A Windows version; for those rare times when I put down the iPad and fire up the laptop. ;) Edit June 2020: Still loving it :-) Okay, so I haven't been paying attention. The Windows version came out in 2019. Oops. Now to go get it. Thanks for the heads-up. 👍
Syncing disaster. Stability, stability, stability. (Even in the new version.) IA Writer Pro keeps having sync issues, documents and folders vanishing then returning. Often goes into la-la land where access to documents being edited is denied for 10,15 minutes. Why oh why is it so hard for a decent note taking app to sync with iCloud Drive? Why must I lose 10min to the iCloud Drive void whenever I try and perform an action such as moving a file? **Manual sync would likely solve all these issues.**
Superior Interface and typrface. After using the original iA Writer, I already knew of the design effort invested on this product. I find the use of the highlighting of nouns, verbs and other syntax makes me think about how much of what I write is necessary. I using iCloud sync and have no issues, so I can't comment on the issues some other users are experiencing. The iA Writer Pro is my main writing experience.
What a great tool!. I’ve been a fan of iA Writer since it first came out. I get distracted by stuff very quickly and Writer (and Pro now) really help me minimise distractions and get on with getting my ideas out using a simple and beautiful interface, backed by some seriously useful syntactical review stuff. It took me a bit to locate ‘focus’ as ‘sentence’ now, but I’m okay with that. Cross-platform access is seamless and delightful, and saving versions to different stages (Note, Write, Edit and Read) is a simple way of progressing iterative writing and a huge mnemonic bonus for me. Markdown is great for prepping blog posts offline. Once you figure out markdown (and it really doesn’t take long) it’s a great formatting advantage if you’re a blogger who wants a standard writing interface to focus on written content. There are a number of other things I enjoy about Writer Pro - if you’re unsure have a look at their Twitter feed for user feedback and I’m sure you’ll see a hugely positive reception, with any correspondence being quick and direct.
The Best. I use iA Writer every day for writing notes and extended pieces as part of my PhD research, as well as for exporting draft pieces to my WordPress blog. I love the implementation of Markdown, the minimalistic writing environment, easy access to plain text files and the inclusion of hashtags, which I use frequently to mark keywords. It has all the power that you need while also getting out of your way as you write.
Great user interface let down by File Browser integration. All in all a great writing app with a flexible UI that you customise to be as minimalist as you like. The app is let down by woeful files integration. It only works with iCloud, Cannot use third party file storage locations - this is a deal breaker. Please fix this so it can open, edit and save to any cloud storage location within Files app.
The (almost) perfect notes app. I love iA Writer. It’s probably my most-used app across iOS and Mac, and I use it for all my knowledge management and note-taking. The team is constantly pushing out updates, the app is polished and reliable, and best of all its all based on portable Markdown files requiring no export step. The one reason I haven’t given this app 5 stars is that there are still a few points of friction and quirks. - It’s difficult to add media (you need to hit a command, and rename files, and it will only display images). This will throw off people used to the flexibility of other editors (e.g. Bear, Ulysses, Apple Notes). - There’s no support for sketching on iPad. - Wikilinks between files don’t work if you rename a file. Ideally these references should auto-adjust (e.g. Obsidian). - Sorting is global, and affects folders too. Meaning if you want to use this for notes and set it to sort by recent, all your folders will sort by recent instead of alphabetically (Apple Notes does this, for example).
Focused, flexible. The best praise I can give this app is that I’ve been able to use it consistently for years at this point. A longer streak than I’ve managed with dozens of other writing tools. The design is great, the sync works really well across devices and (for me) the balance of features is just right.
Shoots itself in the foot. Seems strange for well-developed “professional” app for writers who use text all day that this only handles two types (txt and HTML) - oh and its own proprietary format, I love this app, but I’m tearing out my copious golden locks just faffing about with import and expert of files - all mine are in rft or rftd or OPML. Please make this brilliant app handle all the text files that Textilus handles - oh and that includes Scrivener, and help prevent baldness in a weary user.,
I cannot authenticate Onedrive. I got my app on windows, now I purchased one on my iphone but the iphone app cannot sync my files on Onedrive. I cannot authenticate to see files from onrdrive or googledrive, i can only see files from icloud. How to fix this?
Very disappointing. The four modes (note, write, edit, read) are potentially a useful idea, but the implementation is a wasted opportunity. While things like the fonts and colours change, there is in practice very little difference in functionality between the modes. (Why bother?) The file list is rudimentary and not useful (the only file function is delete). Files are numbered sequentially and there is no way to change that or reorder. The navigation is rather unintuitive, because of nonstandard gestures (eg. pull down returns up a level in the hierarchy to the file list, rather than searching) and strange choices for buttons and their positions (eg. tap the centred number of the file also returns to the file list). The signature "syntax" highlighting feature is full of promise, but in practice not useful. In my testing, the algorithm frequently misidentifies parts of speech, and the basic interface means it is tedious to use. There is no ability to change display font settings (other the three fonts that come baked in to the note, write, edit/read modes) and no 'dark' (night) mode. The function to import all files across from the iA Writer app just forced closed the app. Certainly not a "pro" level app, or worth that level of pricing. If I could have trialled this before purchasing I would not have proceeded. This is disappointing because the app's marketing seems to indicate some real innovations.
JUST A TERRIFIC WRITING APP. I have iA Writer on 3 iDevices and on my MacBook Air! It has become my first choice writing app. It just gets better as I learn more of its features. Highly recommend!
Best writing app in the App Store. I’ve used IA Writer for a number of years, tried others and just keep coming back. The combination of great design, simplicity and features is hard to beat. Thanks IA for a great product!
Lost 4 days of conference notes. I loved this app, been using it for more than 3 yrs, until I lost 90pc of my document in the middle of a conference. Gone, never to be seen again, the cloud version the same. I will never use this app again, I can't afford to lose that kind of data. I am very angry about this.
Deserved Respect. Truly an amazing team of innovative developers, not only working hard for the constant improvement of the app but are also very good at listening to their customers on the social media. A wonderful experience really.
Fabulous. Awesome markdown-based editor. Clean, Simple and effective. Syncs (via iCloud) to my iPad and MacBook so I can work across devices.
Promising. Simple workflow, simple interface. Almost nothing to get in the way of getting writing done. Does exactly as advertised. Providing for bold-italic-underscore formatting would probably be a useful addition for representing semantics/syntax. Some occasional issues with touch sensitivity may be HW or OS issue rather than application flaw.
Lying Devs. The developers have promised to bring the outline function to the apple versions for years. Go look online and you will find them promising it to come soon—years ago. I even received an email telling me the feature will come soon. This is a basic feature that’s already on their windows version.
Neat app that could be improved. The fact that this simple but aesthetically well-designed app is priced at $20 is understandably annoying for a lot of users. However, for something I use everyday it's worth the price of one average dinner out. The iCloud sync is invaluable and the app is generally a joy to write large volumes of text on. There are things I think could be improved interface-wise though. I feel the functions within the 'edit' tab double up on the already well implemented iOS 'cut and paste' features making it largely redundant. For me the backward and forward cursor buttons would far better serve as constantly available undo and redo buttons and the 'Edit' tab button could be a sadly missing, 'Night View' (white text on black background) toggle switch instead. The extra access to most-used punctuation marks is cool but I'd like to have choices between, for example, single quotation marks and double; or Question marks and Exclamation marks; or Colon/Semi Colon as standard 'hold-down-pop over' keyboard menus. Without those choices I find myself not taking advantage of the marks in the dedicated top bar and reverting back to using the keyboard in the standard iOS fashion. Apart from that, a neat app that fills a gap.
Outstanding app. It’s always open. For all my notes and writing across iOS and macOS . It’s my machine home. Fast as my fingers, well crafted visually, built with the right tools for the target environment (that’s so rare to see). I have nothing but praise for the developers of this app.
Consistently excellent with regular updates. Overall just a wonderful writing experience.
Doesn't Work With Seafile on iPadOS. I moved to this App from Bear, based on of the promise of managing my notes as simple markdown files, without a proprietary database. I use Seafile to synchronise my file across devices. IA Writer can open files via the Files interface but is unable to save them. I get a "you don't have permissions errors". Other text editing Apps like Byword can modify files, which makes me believe this is an IA Writer issue. Nice App but doesn't work with my toolset.
Lovely to write letters with. Easy to learn, clean, can write letters both on my iPhone 6s and iPad air2, syncs across to the MacBook version using iCloud. I email from the iPhone/iPad using the app, an improvement on the very good iawriter Classic, Just been adding images and using them in the PDF format the letters look beautiful, a good value beautiful app.
Limited Template For Ipad. Very limited formatting for exporting from Ipad. You will have to create your own using editor on Ipad. Not sure what editors are available for this task on ipad. This takes more time than necessary. Edit: the templates offered for free is also VERY limited. This is not usable when writing in Markdown because the markdown itself does not allow formatting. Ulysses has lot more templates but even that's not enough. There's no professional writing app available for Ipad users at this time for these reasons. It's possible to use Microsoft or Google apps for free for basic use and essay writing.
Finally. Looks like it has the best features of the previous free and pro versions. I like it.
Almost there.... As a writer who spends a lot of time in front of the screen, I love the night mode - pretty much what made me get it. Downside though is that it doesn't have all the features to make it perfect, suggest as the ability to adjust the font and point size, as well as a word counter. Put that bell and that whistle into the package and I'll bump the three star rating to a five star rating.
👌. I really enjoy using this app as both a writing pad and for lists. The todo checkboxes are a really nice touch. My only feature suggestion would be to allow customisation of the formatted preview, or a better default format, similar to how GitHub formats markdown with left alignment and balanced vertical spacing.
Great, but would like more Appearance options. Hi! Thanks for the great application. I however would love to have more control over the appearance/design. Both of the fonts are very nice, but would also love to see more iOS-bundled fonts, such as San Francisco and Avenir Next. These aren’t fixed-width fonts, but that is fine with me. Line height, and character spacing would also be very welcome. Please make it happen!
Serious case of buyer's remorse.. A text editor with a strange set of features from a company that prides itself on 'simplicity.' The workflow doesnt make sense (especially on the Mac equivalent) and the language analysis is paltry compared to competitors (eg Hemingway). The different modes offer more or less the same things and export options are minimal. Honestly, there are several other options that are substantially better. Mediocre and expensive. What a disappointment.
Ok!. Some how I keep going back to the basic iA...apart from the syntax what am I getting? It's always dark when I open it up and I'm not wise enough to figure out (yet) how to change the settings for this...however I like writing with it!
Best writing app on iOS. Hands down the most friendly and intuitive writing experience on the iPhone. Updates just keep making it better.
Does not work with bluetooth kb. The syntax bar disappears when I try to type with my bluetooth keyboard, which is almost pointless as the app works best with a keyboard. Please issue a fix for this. This app would be awesome if not for that silly bug.

Disappointed. I am really disappointed to learn that I have to buy the app a second time in order to use on my Mac as well. This is ridiculous given the cost of this text editor. I guess I have to go through the process of requesting a refund now. 😩
Very good app…. … Can be better. Can you please give us the ability to select lines of text and or words and color code them? Would be super helpful. Also, margined if we eliminated markup mode and simply wrote and marked up directly and instantly in preview mode. No real need for the back and forth and split screen. The same concept of minimalism and distraction free writing applies if we could just simply write in preview mode.
Nothing but beautiful writing. I use Writer Pro on my Mac in full screen mode for nearly all my writing— from emails to blog posts, and from research notes to lengthy report. It's the perfect writing tool, and having it available on my iPhone for quickly editing, jotting notes and ideas or pasting relevant URLs, means that I have a seamless experience from on-the-go thinking on my phone to at-my-desk writing and editing.
No grammar check on iPad. What’s the point of a writing app that can’t check grammar?
Has only gotten better with time. I was looking at the old review I wrote, and things have changed considerably since then. The issues I had with the design of the app then have all been fixed, so five stars. Even then, there are ways it could be improved, but the developers have done a great job of supporting the app and making it better over time. I also really appreciate that the developers have not moved to a subscription model. I have reached my limit with subscriptions. I have gotten a lot of value from this app, and if there is a paid update I will almost certainly be purchasing it.
Thumbs up. Elegant, straightforward Markdown editor. Worth the price.
Nothing opens, writing options are limited. Opens no files either in iCloud or OnMyiPad files. Doesn’t matter which file type the files are saved as. Writing itself is cramped and limited. Not worth the price. Like the idea though.
Articles you read are written here. I’m a journalist and author. Both of my books were written on IA Writer. That’s In addition to almost 4,000 articles that have been published in some of the world’s most popular magazines. All of them written using IA Writer. I’ve tried every word processing and writing app and piece of software on the market, some of which have cost hundreds of dollars. None of them are as good and easy to use. I even use it just for notes or to jot something down. The distraction-free feature and easy-to-read screen are great features, but my favourite feature is how it auto-saves and updates in the cloud so I can pick up and go from writing on my laptop to my iPhone or my tablet. I like this app so much that I actually argued with an editor who wanted me to switch to the magazine’s web-based publishing app. I refused and wrote their articles in here and then copied the finished articles into their software. There’s no question. This is the best writing app I have ever used, hands down. Period.
Good product. I love this apps
Oversimplified Logo. Great app, but oversimplification of the logo is part of an annoying trend.
Great Writer. Nice
Great app but please add NESTED TAGS. That would make this the ultimate note app.
Altering my old opinion. I wrote a negative review about a previous version of IA Writer some years ago. My criticisms of the time, while valid, no longer apply, and I don’t want to unfairly influence their ratings with old complaints. Congrats to the developers for turning it around and making an app the community seems to love!
Superb Text Editing And Writing App. Great app, intuitive to use and bloatware-free. Many decent apps have ruined their reputation and lost customers by going to a subscription model, but iAWriter has stayed true to providing value for money without bilking customers for eternity. 5/5
Finally 👏. Finally a beautiful markdown editor that isn’t subscription based and has latex support. Bravo iA team.
Love IA writer. This app is so useful for writing family history and being able to work on several chapters at a time. I have been using it since before the improvements and appreciate them all. It removes all my excuses to not write! The new improvements are a wonderful addition to app! I realized I needed something like that, but never dreamed an app could do all that. I don’t know what I would do without IA writer. It keeps me going even if I don’t feel like writing! I haven’t tried all the new updates, and they sound wonderful! I have used and loved this app for so long, I don’t know what I’d do without it. I will work at trying the new updates too.
good but pasting is broken. I work daily with iA Writer and I must say I love it. But, the pasting text is broken. Copying text from iA Writer and pasting it somewhere else works fine, but pasting text often does not work, it pastes nothing. When I reboot my iPad pasting in iA Writer works back again. But after a while it stops working for some reason. How do I solve this? It's quite annoying to have a text editor without a working pasting of text...
Thanks for selling apps, not subscriptions!. I’ve been a long time user of iA Writer on iOS and Mac and it only gets better! I admire the company which manages to develop an app for over 10 years and does that without charging subscription. I hope that more developers recognize that there are only so many subscriptions an average customer can pay per month. It’s a dead end... Sell apps, not subscriptions!
Cannot create new documents in Google Drive. Library -> Open... -> Google Drive -> Create Document “Couldn’t communicate with a helper application. Try your operation again, if that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again” Tried revoking permissions under my Google Account, uninstalling/reinstalling both iA Writer and Google Drive several times - doesn’t work. iA Writer works perfectly fine with Google Drive on my Google Pixel, I will update this review if I can get this working again or if it’s patched. As of now, I paid for a product that I cannot use across my devices without installing yet another app to use as an intermediary (Dropbox).
Great App, but adding images has become tough. I’ve been a longtime user of iA Writer, and still love its writing features with all the grammar control and suggestions. That being said, I had not used it in a few months, and now on iOS I’m finding including images incredibly difficult. I recall in the past just importing an image, and it would save it in the folder with the .me file and preview fine. But now, the only option appears to be a image content block, but even when I use iOS files to place a .jpg in the same folder, it’s added extra steps and does not work without heavily breaking writing flow.
A+. Such a great app, I use it everyday and the updates keep coming years after purchase!
Nice when it works. I’m not sure what to say other than, it often just refuses open my simple text files. I tap a text file from Google Drive, it highlights but never opens. Network access doesn’t seem to be a factor. Sometimes works, but often doesn’t for stretches of time.
Fix please. Sometimes when a word says it’s misspelled and i click on it, it freezes then crashes the app. When I go back on, the last five minutes of writing gets erased. Please fix. I really like the app otherwise.
Go-to writing app for 13 years. 13 years and running, reliable as a brick. You will never go back.
IA from AI. I’ve used IA Writer for years. Love it. These new AI tools… I just can’t. I’m disgusted with IA for thinking this was a good idea. You’ve lost my business. I’m uninstalling, and will not be coming back.
Near perfect. I’m a developer so writing notes, blog posts, and readme’s is incredibly intuitive with this app. Their privacy policy is on point as well. If there was a way to collaborate with other people on the same file it would be perfect. Keep it up team thank you!
Overall great. Is it possible to have system installed fonts? I am using Chinese and prefer my own fonts. Thanks!
Minimal & Flexible. I really love this writing app. I've bought versions across mobile and desktop and love them all. The iA Writer team clearly put a lot of passion and brilliance into crafting a powerful, efficient writing experience for those of us who don't need the bits and bobs of other writing apps. I only wish Dropbox integration was a bit more efficient on iOS; though I can imagine that has more to do with the OS's handling of file uploads. Maybe not something that is easily added to apps.
Great minimalist writing. Nothing fancy, just what is required to write and publish to WordPress, Ghost, your own private library of notes or journal. Nothing fancy means this is a great app for focusing on writin. It also makes it easy to learn and use. Highly recommended.
Where I want to write.. iawriter continues to give us reasons to depend on it. It evolves with the platform.
Stills great, but File support is broken. Love it! I've tried a bazillion text editors on multiple platforms, and this is my favourite for daily use. Clean interface, auto-fill for file names and lists, good file syncing.
Easy uncluttered app. I find this unfussy app just right for writing letters which is all I use it for. I use it on my ipad which makes it a portable system. Thanks!
Phenomenal Resource!. I love this app and have been using it for about a year now. It’s been amazing for writing my blog, novels, essays and assignments in university. Highly recommend!
Frequent updates but.... I am absolutely in love with this app and how it feels when I write with it, but it looks like there’s one feature that seems to be absent for a while now! It seems like even if I change the maximum line length on iPhone nothing visually changes, and one thing I enjoyed about this app was reducing the amount of information on the screen and to reduce visual noise! I would appreciate if this could either be fixed, or if someone could explain to me how this worked! Thanks!
Best in class. Looking for a word processor that helps you focus and isn’t confusing to use? I haven’t found a better app. I use it across all my computers and devices and can’t find anything wrong with it.
Simplistic Writing App?. I’m wondering how strictly true this is. Your smart folder set up is very frustrating, and overall I’m not sure what it is you’re trying to accomplish for writers. Maybe it’s only me, but I tend to sort my writing into separate and distinct projects, so Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, Cooking Blog, DIY Blog etc. Maybe there is a way to do this with your smart folders without them all showing up in each others’ folders, but it isn’t easily accessible. If we have to seek help figuring out how to do this, you’ve already taken the writer away from the writing. Even if you do the search keyword option, if you happen to use that phrase in another work, your file about dragon fruit tarts will show up in the folder with your fantasy novel about dragons. Please put an option to configure the smart folders on and off? Machines do a lot these days, I know, but I swear to you, humans are still smart enough to know how to do their own sorting.
IA app. Great writing tool. Enjoy the ease of using it.
Removes the distractions, with the right amount of power. This app lets me do all the things I need to do without getting in my way.
Love this app. Been writing a book for awhile. I love the ease of this app. I’ve tried others this is the best.
The most essential app on my iPad, and my favourite. Sounds a bit fawning, doesn’t it? And forty-dollars for a text app? Are you serious? Yes, it’s just so damn useful and pleasant to use. Worth every penny. If you write with any frequency, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better app for writing in Markup. Works best with the Mac (and Windows) app. I have all three and move constantly between devices. Much snappier and easier to use for notes than either Evernote or apple’s Notes app. The interface is so functional and to-the-point that I’ve ended up doing much more writing on this app — on my Mac, iPad, and phone — than I ever expected. And I’m only now discovering the colour coded grammatical elements feature. I didn’t see the point of this before, but it’s enormously helpful if you’re trying to become more aware of how you use verbs, adverbs, and nouns. Now eager to try out the tagging feature.
The Gold Standard. Still the best product I have ever purchased on the App Store. You can really tell this product comes from a strong company culture. They have been thoughtful and intentional about everything. And they understand the interplay between form and function. Both are exceptional!
Almost perfect!. This is a really fantastic app but it’s missing one thing: Please let me write in ‘preview’ mode. I find the markdown characters distracting and wish I could write, edit and review my text - including syntax & style check modes - with the preview mode enabled. Thanks to the devs for continuous improvement of this app, and especially for not going with a subscription model.
Worth the price and no subscription!. Doesn’t require a manual to use. Distraction-free writing.
Marvellous App. I have been searching for a relatively easy and simple word processor that I could use on my iPad. I found much more, this app lets me work on multiple poems and stories during various edits, at the same time. I think this app is brilliant.
Thank You. First i want to thank the Dev for not following the trend of Subscription service, that decision alone has engage more writers to use your platform, Myself included. The Focus mode is pure genius. Plus you don’t over load the application with useless tool. There is a lot i like about this application and of course their is room for improvement. I don’t believe that any one application is perfect but this one here is pretty dam close. I will definitely pass the word to other writers & Coder i know about this application
Tab as indent is not working. I set the correct setting, but the whole line continues to indent instead of, for example, only the third word in the line
Thanks!. Just wanted to say thanks for not jumping on the subscription bandwagon like so many other developers — it’s greatly appreciated. So, thanks!
Often loses work when you lose internet. Say you continued editing your document at 300 words. Then you board a plane without internet. You write another 1000 words. You decide to pay for the plane wifi. While the iPad is connected to the plane’s wifi but not yet connected to the internet (this is before you pay), the document will attempt to sync with Dropbox or iCloud Drive, fail, and revert to its backup of 300 words. THERE IS NO BACKUP OF YOUR PROGRESS. THIS IS STUPID AND HAPPENS TOO OFTEN.
Hope to improve Chinese writing experience.. A blank PDF exported when wrote in plain Chinese text. And when previewing, the rendering CSS Style has some issues such as the H1, H2 title and blank line shows incorrectly (in Chinese writing). Hope to improve Chinese writing experience.

Excellent as a text manipulator. The developer is behind this product truly are passionate about making good product and considering things like user interface and ease-of-use. I truly appreciate the value I get for the cost of the product. I also appreciate the momentum to upgrade the product with new usable features and maintain its stability with updates in tandem with iOS. Keep up the good work!
I really want to love this iPad app. I love the mac version, everything great. But the iPad version... Why doesn't it hide the status bar by default? I used my iPad Pro with an external keyboard. To someone that's super sentitive about time, I don't want to see the clock at any time. If I want to hide the status bar, I have to touch the screen, and swipe up, which messes up where I'm looking at, and I then have to swipe down to go back to where I was. Then if I'm not careful enough and accidentally swipe right a bit while I'm swiping down, the side bar would come out, oh geez... Another annoying bug: the copy paste sometimes stop working completely, and i have to close and restart the app to get it working again. #3. regex substition works halfway. i can find with regex but if i put /n in the replacement box, all things changed to n instead of new line.■
Very disappointed.. After years of using this app with no problems, it suddenly couldn’t find or open any file remote or local. Regret to say support was less than helpful, enough so that I’m giving up on what was a dependable tool I used every day. I’m really hoping Apple Notes has caught up. UPDATE their support folks did reach out mostly to see it was an iOS issue and asked more questions. I ended up fixing it myself by reopening files through my Mac which fixed the issue on the iOS side. Not clear if it was the app or iOS but I came up with the solution myself.
Inexcusable loss of data leads to inevitable conclusion: This is not a reliable app.. After completing a 1000 word article, Writer has crashed, taking my iPad down with it to a reset. Upon restart, instead of reopening with the document safely stored in iCloud or a local cache, there is no article. Not in the cloud, not locally. The article is now lost forever, nowhere to be found. It is appalling to find out that a modern app fails to constantly save documents either to a local cache or the cloud, but that’s exactly what has happened with Writer today. Which means that, by current computing standards, Writer is not a reliable app and should be avoided. And no, I don’t care if Apple’s iCloud is crap (which it is) and I don’t care that this has been the first and only time this has happened. The simple fact that it CAN happen once, is a clear indication that it is not a reliable writing app. No application in the 21st century can let data get lost in such an embarrassing way. Time to get back to Google Docs.
Bring back option to launch with last file opened. I am a big fan of the app, using it since years. Please bring back the option to open the last file at the same edit location as before. It takes unnecessary time to keep navigating to the same file every time when returning to the app. Older feedback: ‘From other apps’ and recents should be the same folder and only be links to the original files, which reside in their respective cloud folder location, isn’t it?
Almost perfect. I’ve tried a lot of different writing apps, but I keep coming back to this one. It really is just the best markdown editor in the app store. My only complaint is that it won’t let me have two documents open at the same time. I’d love to have a tabbed interface so I could easily switch between documents.
My Favorite Markdown Writing App. I have been back in forth with many Markdown writing apps, and hands down IA Writer is my favorite across all my device. I like the short cut usage on on my devices Mac, iPad, and iPhone, make writing a breeze. The reason for the 4 stars is that I really wish the adaption of TextExpander would make my writing on my iPad and iPhone so much better, works very well on my Mac. I hope that in the future you adopt the TextExpander API, thank you again for a great well designed product.
Updates horrible. I used to love this app and use it all the time. I have no idea what the developers are trying to accomplish with the most recent update. What used to be a seamless integration with my cloud storage is now overly complex, doesn’t update files, and refuses to work correctly. I truly have no clue what the developers are doing with this app now. It makes me regret ever having purchased it because I went from something I liked that was functional to something incomprehensible that is completely unable to open any of the documents ut used to edit all the time. It’s always sad when an app that was 4 or 5 stars has to be re-reviewed to be one star.
Amazing minimalistic note app with companion Mac app. I’ve been using for over a year and I LOVE the simple and elegant UI. I love the comprehensive features that help me focus on my writing and then export to pdf, or share as I see fit. The app gives me control, I love writing in markdown, and having my changes sync across devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac), and having the documents available in the native file store. Great job! If I could give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I would!!
My favorite text editor. I’ve tried myriad text editors, and iA Writer hits the best balance between functionality and distraction-free writing for me. Plus, it just feels good to use in a way that other writing apps don't. If I enjoy using an app, I want to use it more, and the fact that I enjoy using iA Writer so much has been a boon to my productivity. It's obvious that the developers put a lot of care into the user experience.
Please Help. I have spent a great deal of time over the years searching for and using tools to assist me with my work. Last week I purchased iA Writer and spent many hours working with it to see whether or not it could be a useful tool for me. It was very impressive and I was excited about it’s abilities and potential. It exceeded my expectations and provided important assistance. I had already started thinking of ways it could improve the work of my entire team. Tonight I opened iA Writer to review some important notes that I had made for tomorrow and all of my folders were empty, all of my files were gone. Please help ASAP.
Marching to their own beat. What I love about this publisher is they are independent thinkers who ship simple, but not simplistic products. iA Writer has become my go-to writing app because of this combo. The focus on writing, emphasis focus + flow over features are a rare combo. The features are more powerful than plentiful—and this is a good thing. PS iA Presenter is similarly great in its own way but needs a mobile app.
Syncing problems between MacOS and iOS apps. This is a great writing tool, which I use a lot. What I’m frustrated with, however, is that I regularly encounter problems when syncing between the MacOS and the iOS apps. Spent some time on the web trying out various trouble shooting options: to no avail. From experience I know that at some point the syncing will happen - but usually not when I’m about to leave the house. Dropbox is more reliable in that respect than iCloud, but the iOS versions of iA Writer don’t really cooperate with Dropbox.
Best general writing app for iPhone. This has been the best app for my iPhone when it comes to writing. Be it journals, quick notes, or logging of events. The simplicity of just writing text let’s me make sure my ideas get out down unimpeded. As an added bonus, the app is well polished and clean. Exactly what you’d want for such a simple yet critics task.
Love the updates !!. Highlight colors, wiki links, auto detection of links, content blocking. Suddenly IA writer became a powerful tool in my opinion. As a long time user I am always excited by their solid stable releases. Now with more features only thing I want to be sure is they are not losing the stability. So far I am a fan for these updates. Thank you !! This is awesome
Great for writing and very decent autocomplete feature. I like the fact that it is not a subscription-based application, while providing a very simple and care-free interface for composing text. In many other apps, their auto-complete features can get in your way. Here, the feature is most often useful, and much less frequently a distraction.
Can’t create a new file. iA Writer claims to support Google Drive synching, but this is partly misleading. I was able to edit a txt document already in my Drive with no problem. When I tried to create a new txt file in the same Drive folder, however, the app confusingly didn’t let me. After adding the file name in the new doc pop-up, nothing happened. I don’t use iCloud, so this is a bummer after paying $8.99 for the app! Update: I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall the app after it failed twice to open a file from my Google Drive. It opens it successfully a few times, and then fails to do so after reopen the app a while later.
Been a solid tool for years. This app has become a big part of daily work and writing. Just waiting for one feature that never seems to come : folding sections. Especially on a phone, if a document gets to ant length at all it makes navigating unwieldy and impractical.
Nothing better; fix request?. Long-time user. Best writing app I’ve ever used professionally. Something I came across today that’s bugging me: numbered lists. When going from 9 to 10 in the list (and I’m assuming for every added digit), the indented text doesn’t update so that the whole list is equally tabbed away from the numbers. Doesn’t look clean to me with the unequal spacing. Maybe that’s how it always is for every text processor ever? I’m not sure, just stuck out to me today.
Great app, terrible icon. This app is fantastic, but the new icon completely blends into app Home Screen l and doesn’t stand out making it hard to find, particularly with the trend of apps using icons with a white or black theme to accommodate light/dark mode. As a designer myself, I know how easy it is to get “attached” to your designs, but I think the team needs to swallow its’ pride, and bring back the old icon. Less isn’t always more.
Finally fed up with this App…! AWFUL…!. Warning: Do not buy this app…!!! (Review: ZERO stars…) I just spent close to two hours editing two very important reports for work. And when I got home from the office where I was working to continue on at home, I discovered that ALL of my changes were lost… LOST! THE SYNCH FUNCTION IS COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE. I have been using this App for years. I still own the original ia writer - which is still a great app. It still adheres to the company's original promise: clean, simple, easy to use… But no longer supported. This new version is chocked full of features THAT I NEVER USE. And it has ALWAYS been buggy. And sure, while a lot of the (mostly useless) functions they keep adding work… if the SYNCH function fails why use it if you lose all of your data…? Would you fly in an airplane with a significant history of aircrashes. What I have been doing for the past several years is using the old, original 'ia writer' and copy/paste/send to the new version if I want to work on my desktop. BAD App!
Good app but DropBox API sync removed. I have been using this app forever. Good app, serves my on the go writing needs. That being said, they removed the in app dedicated DropBox sync and replaced it with the system wide open method in iOS 11. This is fine and all except there is a bug with DropBox’s open file plugin, causing not downloaded it to hang randomly when I tried to open it from the files app and this app. For now I have resorted to editing files from iCloud.
Miss the old keyboard. I write directly on my iPad a lot, and got the original is write because of the clean interface and perfect keyboard set up. Now the keyboard is pretty much like the iOS keyboard. If the goal is not to take my hands off the keys, why make the user learn a bunch of new shortcuts and whip out a Bluetooth keyboard? Also not terribly fond of the split screen file view. It’s way faster and more efficient for looking through files, but I kind I like the basic version. This still isn’t a bad app and I use it daily, but I don’t see what sets it apart originally anymore.
Good app, except that…. It becomes the default app for opening ZIP files! It’s really annoying! I can no longer open and preview ZIP files in Files app. Please don’t claim ability to open ZIP files merely because you use it as a container for templates. File association in iOS is a black box and users have no control of it. Every app (except the arrogant ones) should claim ability to open a filetype only if it can support this filetype in a reasonable manner.
Nice app for getting thoughts down. I use this app all the time and sync across multiple devices. Overall, very happy. However, I am unable to install update 5.5.1 on my Mac. I am logged into App Store. Error message states “We could not complete your update”. I tried the support tab for IA, but it was of no help. No way to email or connect with developer. I do not like apps that do not provide at least an email to reach out to the developer. Thought of downgrading to 3 stars, but the app has been credible.
Simplicity and ethical. iA Writer has been the standard for markdown writing for the better part of a decade. Their aesthetics are unmatched. The user experience is wonderful. It is simple and yet powerful. With their latest updates to iA Writer 7 and the addition of authorship, their ethics are truly showing through and I'm here for this.
Excellent Writing Companion. I really enjoy using the app to write all of my project requirements, journaling, brain dumps, etc. The UI is beautiful and really inspires you to get the words out. Very reliable have not had a single crash ever. Definitely worth the asking price and the project has been well maintained. 5/5
Sublime. Can one use such a word for a writing app? Yes indeed. Over the years it’s become my go to writing app for notes, thoughts, drafts, and even the odd screenplay when I’m on the move and with my iOS / iPadOS device. I love how the sync with BBEdit on my Mac is flawless. Love the small updates and polishes, though I don’t need much more. And… I love the new icon. Way to go team!!
Simple and powerful. I love that this app doesn’t try to do too many things. The developers included all of the essentials. They don’t burden you with a complex plug-in system, the requirement to keep all of your files in a proprietary database, or endless combinations of themes. The only thing I would add is a keyboard shortcut to insert the current date, akin to the date picker in the existing menu.
Unequalled. There are very few kinds of software which rise to the level of an experience. Most are mere tools or conveniences. Only some truly enrich your life with their craftsmanship. This is one of those few. I’ve tried many writing tools but I always come back to this one and after years I continue to be delighted. It’s the writing app I would have built for myself, had I had the time and love to pour into it as iA has.
Not worth $9 by a long shot. While I’ve tried desktop Writer and it worked pretty well for me, apparently there is next to NO customizability in the iOS version. If I want a dark background, I have to change the entire setting on my device to “dark”. I can’t change the font color. I can’t even set the font to a normal basic serif like courier. At most I would pay $1 for this app, and even then I personally would not want to when other apps exist for free. I used it for 15 minutes and found it miserable and annoying and not nearly as distraction-free as it wants to be, since I can’t adjust it to fit my needs. I’ll be requesting a refund as soon as the receipt comes in.
iCloud issues. I’m giving this app 5 stars because it’s a core part of my life every day, I love this app. However, if like me you’re struggling recently because iCloud has disappeared from your iA Writer library, have no fear. A simple restart of your iDevice (iPhone, iPad) should restore the connection.
Ryan. I love this software and possibly even more so love the support. In the month I have used it, I have been very productive and when I did run into a serious issue that was my fault, the support was incredible and got back to me within 3 minutes. We resolved my issue and I was immediately able to get back to work after what could have and probably would have been a very traumatic experience. Thanks To J from Information Architects Tokyo for saving the day!
Dropbox sync API coming back soon!!! [updated]. Dev just responded saying Dropbox sync is coming back soon!!! This is one of the very few iOS text editors that allow you to move entire lines up and down to easily reorder lists. Why is IA Writer deprecating Dropbox API sync? For now, it appears to still be available, but it’s annoying to always start in the iCloud app folder and then have to browse to Dropbox. If they do fully deprecate it, I’ll have to switch to another app for iPhone/iPad notes.
Authorship updates are fantastic!. I’m not a big reviewer type person, but I wanted everyone to know about iA Writer’s new authorship features to differentiate which verbiage was ChatGPT-generated, which was copied in from other sources, and which was self-authored. It really helps you track things when you’re developing a complex document in a non-intrusive way.
Simplicity. I like the simplicity, the revamped action bar, and the automatic backup. I don’t like that, because I write on my iPhone, the font selection is either too large, or too small (for my eyesight). This is the one thing that keeps me on Ulysses. Big improvement otherwise would be a ToC that worked with heading tiers and ability to jump to headings as in Ulysses and Drafts.
Using since classic. I have tried every app out there, this is the only one I can focus in. That’s not against the other apps and more of a personal problem. I started a novel in 2015. Sometimes I stare at the screen for an hour before a word comes—this is the only app pretty enough to look at that long. Everything melts. That’s a cherry on top of the simplicity iA provides to write whatever it is you have to work on. Since the last few rounds of updates, it seemed like perfect timing. I was able to start organizing in files as I read and edit with hashtags and it all started to come together. Otherwise I might have had to go hunting for a different tool to do the editing in. There are more impressive tools out there, Ulysses etc... But the simplicity of use and beauty of iA is, so far, unbeatable.
Clean, simple, brilliant. IA Writer does exactly what I want. It does it in obvious and simple ways. It doesn’t required a subscription or in-app purchases to unlock necessary features. The more features that I don’t need, like blog publishing, are accessible but not intrusive. If you want to do a lot of writing in a lot of files with a tool as simple and sharp as a sword — AI Writer is it.
Disappointing Experience with iA Writer. I recently tried using the iA Writer app, and unfortunately, my experience has been less than satisfactory. One of the major drawbacks is the need to purchase separate licenses for iPhone and macOS, which feels unnecessary and costly. Additionally, the app frequently freezes when working with documents that are more than 10 lines long, severely hindering productivity. This issue makes it difficult to rely on the app for any serious writing tasks. Moreover, simple functions like searching within the current document require too many clicks, making the user experience cumbersome and inefficient.
Great app, crashes sometimes. Overall great app. I’m using it to write my college essays on my phone, and it’s making life much easier. I am experiencing a few freezes on iPhone X that go away after 15-30 seconds. Slightly annoying but not impossible to deal with. I don’t have any crash log to help out, nor do I have time to debug, but hopefully the devs can fix it soon!
i love this thing. one request. can i make the font size larger? even though i change the dynamic type in the system, it still is small as ants on an ipad and i am 40 years old, i dont like that. otherwise i absolutely LOVE this editor. Thank you ! Have no idea how I’d missed that.
The best. I’ve been using iA Writer for over ten years. I wrote much of my PhD dissertation in it; I’ve used it to capture notes and ideas; I’ve used it to write poems and scraps of fiction; I’ve started countless articles in it. It’s the best tool available to begin a piece writing and allows for easy export and data interoperability. I’m looking forward to using the new AI stuff—thoughtfully implemented, as I’ve come to expect from iA. Writer is philosophical software at its very best.
Do not buy this app. I bought this app so that I could get some writing done using my IPad. This one was highly rated. I don’t know why. The dashboard is unintuitive and for a program that is supposed to be for writers not programmers should be able to synchronize and save files without doing any research. I wrote a paragraph and when I tried to save to iCloud it deleted everything. I reconstructed the paragraph. When I tried to save to files everything deleted again. I have used many programs before I can recover lost data files I am not a computer novice. This program is buggy
Was A++ now F. TLDR: Used to be the best simple note app around. Now it's just alright. The problem with simplicity is it needs to work, every time, no matter what. Otherwise complexity should be reintroduced when something simply doesn't work as expected. Dropbox syncing has gone steadily down hill for over a year. Notes are now constantly duplicating or simply erasing previous edits at will. Makes using the app a pain a best, a nightmare at worst. I've lost countless notes due to this sync issue. Makes me no longer trust that what I am jotting down will actually save on the go. Emailed back and forth with support. Solutions suggested didn't work, kept requesting answers or an update and was simply ignored. I got the feeling I was put in the "he doesn't get how this works" incompetent category. Really sad too because I used to recommend the app to everyone around me. Old version works better at this point :(
Lackluster Cloud Sync support. I really loved this app, have recently moved the app from homescreen to the app drawer library screen. I had difficulties having consistent sync options with iA writer on Mac & iphone icloud stuff. I believe it is an issue with Mac os catalina & some iCloud problems. As it never updates my files from iPhone to Mac. I switched to dropbox on Mac & to my surprise iA Writer + dropbox doesn't fully work properly with editing at the same location to have a sync library. I switched to 1Writer on my iPhone & iA writer on my mac for now. Dropbox integration works fine on that application. But shelling out redundant licenses just for having a proper third party sync, makes it a bad User experience in general. I know its partly Dropbox Files API to blame as well but 1Writer works fine with other cloud providers.
Loved this app for years. What happened?. This has been one of my go-to apps for years, but it is now constantly deleting new files after I have created them in iCloud. I make a new file on my phone...it doesn’t save...and then it is gone. This has happened several times in iOS. What the heck? I can’t use iaWriter any more till this is fixed. ********* Update: Thank you to the developer for the response. Restarting my iPhone did not fix the problem. However, I happened to upgrade from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 11, and that seems to have done it. I will now happily continue to use iaWriter...but this was not a good experience as I actually lost work. Stars updated.
Phenomenal for focusing & GSD. This is one of my absolute favorite apps to write in — it does an excellent job streamlining drafting and editing with tools for syntax & formatting & grammar & focusing etc. The part-of-speech tool is awesome for writing in a second language too, I can see at a glance where I messed up a conjugation instead of having to scan through the entire document. Looks clean as hell too 😎
Crashes just about every time I use it. I don’t know if it’s just me but it feels like my app crashes just about every time I use the app. Want to edit a page with over 2000 words? Crash. Want to switch to a different document? Crash. Want to switch to a different app then switch back? Crash. None of the QnAs talk about this, no one at iA seems to be taking notice of this issue, and there’s seeming no fixes to the issue at all. Uninstalling/reinstalling does nothing, restarting the phone does nothing, closing the app does nothing, no fix seems to work!
I could not love iA Writer more. It is what I use when I want to get serious writing Done. Focused, beautiful, and brilliant. Edit 9/7/24: the new update adds even more functionality with the ability to move documents easily across folders. This team gets it - allow writers to write, without getting in the way. Thank you, iA.
Integration with DEVONThink To Go and iCloud is not stable. I got this app to edit notes from DEVONThink to go. I care about productivity and stability, not fancy eye candy. This app is not stable, it seems that you can edit files from your database on the fly but it gives a lot of problems, sometimes even when trying to select m iCloud files from iA I get the error “contents not available. Try again later”. Imagine: iCloud not available. On an iPhone X with latest software update. Unacceptable. Would ask for a refund but my time is not worth the money.
