Grace 4 App Description & Overview

What is grace 4 app? Grace App - winner of the 2010 Irish Web Awards and United Nations World Summit Award Mobile.

* * * *

Grace App is an evidence-based picture exchange app designed to encourage and reward independent communication through the use of images. While created with and for people with autism, it can be used by anyone with a speech disability or delay. Grace App is designed to be owned and updated by the user, with minimum support from care-givers.

Grace App works by offering a selection of images in categorized folders where users can select a picture to add to the “sentence strip”. The user then shares the sentence with their communication partner who helps them to point to each card, reading the words aloud.

The default setting is for no sound; however, there is an option in Settings to select “Tap Card to Speak” for users who prefer a vocal output.

On handhelds such as iPod touch or iPhone, the device can be rotated to landscape to show a fullscreen sentence view for sharing and pointing. On iPad, simply tap the arrow to enlarge the sentence to fullscreen. There's also a choice of 3 card sizes for user preference and those with visual/mobility impairment.

Category folders contain a selection of pre-loaded images. Users can add their own images using the camera or access any saved and stored images in their photo library, including images saved from the web.

All images can be labeled with text, deleted, or rearranged to suit the individual user. You can add new Category folders, with a selection of your own photos. All Categories can be rearranged and renamed as required. Detailed instructions are available in the Guide to Grace App at http://www.graceapp.com.

Users can also learn about therapeutic strategies for developing other communication goals in the Guide. These include accepting and expressing “No, Wait” and “Asking for Help” There is also a section on communicating pain.

Grace App has been reviewed by senior speech and language therapists who say:

“Grace App is easy and quick to use and set up, it's easy to rename photo labels. Grace App is my favourite AAC app". KM - Speech and Language Therapist.

"I use Grace App with some of my clients who have difficulty communicating and need a system to augment their speech. One client, a school-aged child with Down Syndrome who has difficulty expressing himself using speech loves Grace App. Within a matter of minutes he was independently requesting his snack AND saying the word. In his case, the voice output was not activated, as he was more motivated to say the words and my goal is ultimately speech production. However, for some of my clients Vocal Output would be very beneficial. I also love the support you get from the developer – you don’t always get this with communication apps. Grace App is simple to use, easy to edit, and very effective as a communication device. The pictures are very easy to take on the spot, and now also very easy to label (every speech therapist’s dream). I also use it along with sign language – a true total communication approach! Grace App is a simple and genius app.” MM - Speech and Language Pathologist.

Grace App is continually improved with the feedback and help of users world-wide. If you have any suggestions or need support, please contact us at http://www.graceapp.com.

Please leave a review if you think Grace has been helpful to you or your family!

Grace 4 Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Not user friendly, not able to customize, not worth it!. Terrible app! I REALLY wanted to make it work because I like the bottom row sentence. Problems -Front screen is not customizeable making it confusing for my daughter with too many options we aren't using. -Not very many pictures in app and its a pain to add new ones -The pictures that are in the app can not be used interchangeably in different folders Basically it is a VERY VERY rigid app that unless your child is exactly like the child this app was designed for its not going to work for you. I gave up and got icommunicate. It is much much much much much better. Don't waste your money on this one. I'm sad I did!

Disappointed. Removed immediately there is no sound, the pictures are too small for those with vision problems and the listening partner has to read what is being expressed instead of being able to hear it and respond more quickly and naturally to the person's request. My daughter got so upset because she kept trying to get it to "talk".

Complete and Total Rip-Off--DO NOT BUY!!. If this app were free, I think it would be mildly useful, but paying any money, let alone $38.00(!) is criminal, and I would like a complete and total refund (from the developer or from iTunes). If you enjoy paying that kind of money for something one could probably do with about 15 minutes of flash-type programing, then by all means, support these people. My son has autism, and I bought this app thinking this app would be useful, but now I understand that the creators of this program appear to only want to take money from desperate parents looking for a way to reach their children. Part of the reason my familiy purchased an iPad was to use it for programs like this, but after this experience I guess I'll only try "FREE" versions, and then after testing it buy it. If these developers are legitimate, than why do they not have any sort of contact info? Or a support page? Why doesn't "Grace" have sound? Do yourselves a favor, and AVOID this product; I know I wish I would have.

Great for non-verbal speech students. I think this app is great! Especially for my students who are able to produce speech, but are not motivated to use expressive language to communicate. I agree that the the function of adding your own photos need to be changed. I've added several new pictures but they show up all on top of each other.

Great entry level aac application. The Grace app is a well designed, user friendly application. I really enjoyed playing around with it. It is very easy to use! Many people forget that it is not about how many features an aac app can offer, but it is about finding an aac app that meets the needs of the student. Not every student is ready for thousands of vocabulary choices. Many students DO need to build their vocabulary, and get accustomed to using picture exchange symbols. Grace app definitely can be an app for that. Well done.

Please try the free app before you buy. If you can. I agree with Horribly_Disapponted. I have seen reviews on some positive reviews on some Autsim app review sites. when it was announced this is free for the autism awareness day, I jumped on board and downloaded the app. I am glad I got this when it is free. Here are some of the several issues with this app. 1. Very basic skeliton app. icons are not clear. It may have worked for the kid it is designed for but not for others. 2. No way to change these icons if you don't like them 3. The labels are embedded in to the picture so you have to make them with label 4. All your imported pics go in to one folder make it is difficult to view if you have more than one page of pics. 5. The icon for the custom folder is stack of pics. 6. Operationally, when once I add an icon to the 'velcro' at the bottom it is not easy to move. 7. Doesn't use any features available in iPad/phone such as slide to go back to the categories. You have to click on categories every time to go back. 8. No voice output which is not advertised but is essential for this type of app. The user (kid) is going to say what they want and it is easier for the adult helping the kid to hear it rather than looking at this one. I wish I can write several suggestions but they are so many, I gave up. I think the developer needs to go back to drawing board before putting this online again.

YaY For Grace App. Unlike some negative reviews, I can say that the App Description is perfectly clear , and adding more content into the Grace app is quite simple , I was able to add 12 folder sets via iTunes photo sharing and expanded my Grace iconography to contain hundreds of new special needs requests , and whatever image I don't have , I can get it on Google Image Search. It is unfortunate how some users care more about the cost of this App, and less about it's simplistic & basic communication utilization method to initiate clarity to what may otherwise gone un-noticed. This Application Works Exactly as Detailed !

Wonderful!. Still the best app for those looking for a "true" PECS communication system for their iDevice. Lots of flexibility and perfect for those individuals with Autism just starting to find their own voice.

I like the app. I love the app but I think it needs more cards.

Expensive app with not a lot of functionality. I can't believe the price for this. All it does is display images from a TINY library, or the images that you upload. Only ONE level of categorization, existing categories are arbitrary, no labeling, no audio, no recall of image strings that you make, once you set an image string you can't re-arrange. WHY does it cost 38 bucks???

Good methodology but needs refinement. I am a special education teacher with the Montgomery County Public Schools' Programs for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I am actually on the verge of launching a 1:1 iPod Touch project in my classroom! The idea of migrating PECS methodology to the iPod Touch/iPhone is great. This is a MUST have app for any professional or parent in the autism community. I was very excited about the relase of GRACE and downloaded it immediately for use with students. There are serveral minor changes I would suggest. First, the ability to hide/show & rearrange categories. Second, adding custom PECS under the pre-made categories. Third, support multiple users/students on one device. In other words, multiple PECS books on a single iPod Touch/iPhone. Perhaps menu on launch where users select client/student working with. Once such changes are made, GRACE will be able to be individualized for each child.

Very disappointing, and price/value is far too high. Since it is hard for many app developers to make money, given the limited size of the audience for autism affected families with iPhones, I would support the ability to charge $40 for a useful app which enables a PECS like system in the iOS environment (ie iPad, iPhones, etc). Yet this is not that app. It is far too limited for real-life use, it shows promise but after several months of waiting for new releases with useful features I am afraid this is simply a dead end product with no merit to it. Do not buy this for your autistic child. Unfortunately I cannot recommend any other tool either, but this tool is (apologies to the developer/promoter for being harsh) ridiculously limited. The paper system is far far far better, as difficult as that is. A real replacement for the paper system would be a truly useful system for parents like myself with an autistic child.

good but needs some tweaks. I like the simplicity of it but every time in try to add my own category it places the images I put in the category on top of the picture for the category on the main page.

Great PECS-like, silent communication app for SLPs, teachers, parents. I highly recommend this app that helps children communicate. A must for Speech Language Pathologists, Special Education, Autism, teachers, parents and siblings will find this Augmentative Alternative Communication app useful. iPod vs IPad with Grace. I started my son with IPod and I liked the sentence strip and the size of the strip but he requires a bigger screen for vision. We purchased the IPad this Christmas and I bought the Grace app again. I was surprised that there are differences. I wish the strip was larger and pics easier to organize. Also on iPod the strip enlarges and fills more of the screen. Easier to see. Hope there is work being done o update the iPad!

Very Disappointed. This app does nothing. For $9.99, it lets you look at limited pictures with limited functions. Can't print, edit, etc. I would certainly like a refund.

Great electronic version of pecs. Super start to a usable pecs system. Like options to add own photos . Needs more word sentence starters or makers, such as asking questions like "where","why","how do","who","what",and "when". Need a category of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to build sentences if the child is able to. Also a catergory for times with digital times and general morning, afternoon, evening, and night words to select. AM and PM would also be nice. This would give them a way to discribe their thoughts about activities and objects. an emotion category is also missing. just the option to add our own categories would be great!

Great as an electronic PECS system!. This app is a wonderful replacement of physical PECS and a very good transition to AAC if speech does not develop. I like being able to re-order. Double tapping to remove from sequence is not my first choice, but I am not an autistic user. ;-) I do like that order is retained and other features of the selection row. Sizing if items would be nice for kids who have vision or motor issues combined with autism, that is one of my few knocks. A useful alternative for reaching kids with autism who are productive with PECS.

Awesome. Love that pictures (& pictures of symbols or words) can be added into any category. Also the ability to arrange the pictures within the category is great. I hope future updates will allow me to add my own categories, and will increase the number of items that can be chosen in one series. Would it be possible to save chosen sequences so that a series of pre selected pictures would display with one selection (instead of having to re-select commonly used sequences)? Possibly there could be a category that has multiple picture sequences. Thank you for a very useful app!

AWFUL. My grandson is 6 and not yet verbal. UNDER IMPRESSION THAT SOUND WOULD BE INCLUDED FOR THIS PRICE. WASTED MY MONEY AND FRUSTRATED MY GRANDSON

Way too limited. The app is set up similar to the Pecs system from Pyramid with the categories and a sentence strip. The issues are that the categories you see on the sample page is it. There are 8 categories and in each category there are about 12 pictures (only one page of images). You cannot add more images to those categories. You can add you own pictures but they are all lumped into their own category and you cannot separate. The system would work if the developer would expand the products capabilities. There is a new one coming out on the market soon I have seen from a developer that will have a lot more capabilities. Sorry, cannot recommend this for any users.

This app does what it says it will and does it well.. I am writing this review as an iPhone developer who understands Autsim through a family member and also the system Grace App is putting in place. I am also writing this because I feel passionately that every word of the previous revue is hurtful to the developer and the Autistic community as a whole. The App is not intended to have sound. The system is not intended to speak for the learner but to help them find their voice. This is clearly written above. This is not Flash, it is not cheap. iPhone development costs hundreds of dollars per hour and requires deep understanding of memory management. There is a very good reason why iPhone DOES NOT SUPPORT FLASH. The support email and websites work just fine. If they did not at first the issue has been fixed. I contacted the developers to discuss the app. No corporate entity would make this app. If I thought it would be a profitable App I might even try to do it better myself. The App is made by a mother of two autistic children who is spending valuable time away from them and a developer who is donating his time to work with her to bring it to the public to help others. There are a handful of apps designed for Autistics in the App store. Near as I can each one is effectively a donation to the community even at a $39 price. If you want to see better apps for autistics and ongoing improvements I would recommend buying this and every other app that is out there so they can continue working. If you see a problem provide the developers with feedback so that you and they understand what is needed.

Great app!. I am a mother of an 11 year old daughter with autism. She has been using her communication book (a binder with lots of pecs) for a few years. After a while, she no longer wanted to use her book at home. I am guessing it was because of the size of her binder and maybe she became frustrated because she didn't have all the pictures she needed to express herself. So I was thrilled when I learned her school had introduced her to an iPod Touch with a communication app. That thrill was short-lived. Once I got over the cost of the app (even though it's better than the $1400 they wanted a few years ago for a big, bulky communication device), her teacher noticed that Lauren was relying on the app to talk for her. It took her years to start using her own words. I most certainly didn't want her to lose her voice. While researching the app that is being used in Lauren's school, I stumbled upon Grace. Despite the quantity of reviews and ratings, I decided to read further. Once I read that Grace doesn't have sound, I WAS HOOKED. Hello!! Not having sound is key! It encourgaes your child to interact AND use his/her own precious voice! I also want to note the following to dispute the negative reviews: (1) The developers are legitimate. Just reference the links listed above to their websites or check out Facebook to witness the hard work they've done to assist those in need. (2) I had no problem contacting Lisa Domican. She responded quickly to my email. She was very helpful & very generous. Her assistance exceeded my expectations and is greatly apprecated. (3) This tool IS simple, but not limited. Simple is good for a child with autism. If they get overwhelmed, they will just become frustrated. You can easily customize the app by adding your own pictures. I've always preferred the "real" pictures as opposed to cartoon pecs anyway. (4) This app is much more practical than the "paper system" mentioned in OSullivan's review. No more lost pecs and no more waiting to create, laminate and velcro new words added to your childs vocabulary and no more bulky 3-ring binders. WOOHOO!!! If your child or loved one is accustomed to using a picture exchange system, I am confident they will catch on to this app. It's simple and VERY ECONOMICAL. Even though the Touch is intended as a Christmas present, I just had to have Lauren give the app a test run today. She easily navigated thru the app; and unlike anoher app, making corrections to her sentence was a breeze. So far, I've only added about 40 pictures, but she was able to tell me she wanted a purple toy and what she wanted to eat for dinner :) Kudos to the developers! Thanks for making such a helpful and affordable app for our loved ones!!

BRILLIANT! Highly recommend this App.. So happy that I bought this App. It was simple to set up and easy to change the text to make the picture names consistent between home and teachers at school. We did delete some pictures and have added and named our own. We will keep adding to these as we need to. We are not using the voice over, we use the pictures to prompt our daughter to try and say the words. Great App thank you!

A long way to go. Nice idea. Albeit not picture change - it's more an alternative communication system. Has a long way to go to be functional. Can add pics - but never remove them ! can't add other categories Overall needs a lot of work - ESP for the price. Really feel I cannot use this effectively. Pls work on adding many more features

Wonderful communication aid that just got better!. I love this app. It used to be great, and now it’s great and beautiful! The new artwork, and new features are terrific. It’s great to see such a helpful app being improved so. No distractions; just a great tool for aiding in communication via an elegant and flexible point and tap interface. Extensible via use of the camera and camera roll, so you’re not limited to the images that come with the app.

Updated Grace app 3.0. My daughter used Grace app for 4 years. Grace app updated for 3.0 this year, it's better than before. It is very easy to use rename and right size photo. Now I don't need another apps for photo borders, caption label, etc. Grace app should be enough, very simple to use rename, you do yourself add picture what child need. Thank you for updated 3.0. Good job. :-.)

Great job!. I have been looking forward to using this app for a while now - but waiting until I had my iPhone as well as iPod touch. What a surprise to get it for free on Autism Awareness Day! Such a lovely, easy to use App - thanks for the free download and the new update. Looking forward to testing it out when my iPad 2 arrives :)

Barb Lyons. I am a Teachers Aide in Qld Australia and this app is a step in the right direction for students currently using a pecs folder. I like how when you turn iphone you can then read the sentence strip with nice big pictures. You really need to be able to add to the main categories that you already have. More sentence starters would be great: I hear, I see, I like, I don't like. I love the idea of taking photo's but would be great if you could add them to the categories that you already have there. Especially in "things I like" "places" "food and drink" and clothes. But well done it is certainly easier to use and less time consuming than printing, laminating and that velcro yuk. It is easier for students to carry. Keep the changes and updates coming.

Grace. It's okay not as good as I thought it would be

Great Idea & Applicaiton - Love it!. My 4 yr old son is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with a severe speech delay and is currently using the picture exchange communication system (folder) to communicate. I am so excited about this application. Yes it does need some more functionality to enable the user to categorise photos and add to current categories however the basis of picture exchange is there and it's so much easier than printing, laminating, velcro, replacing lost pictures, having too many pictures to fit in a folder etc. I love it - congratulations on the idea and making it happen. Much easiler to carry around and love how the large picture sentence appears when you turn it sideways this will certainly help as we have had adults struggling to read small picture cards without glasses! Great price making it affordable for families who are doing it tough with so much therapy(I think I have spent that much on velcro alone). Good for communicating back to the child. Please keep this going, it will help so many children and families. Have only just loaded it so will see how my son goes over the next few weeks. Looking forward to the next update, you deserve an award! You really need to promote this app, I only found out through a friend.

Worth all the praise. I really don't understand how anyone could make a ridiculous comment like "I thought it would be better" and not elaborate on how? Better than what?! My family have been using this app since it was released and I can only describe it as indispensable. Only those who have been through the major inconvenience of carting around huge folders to help their child express their needs and wants and effectively give them a voice could truly appreciate the convenience and ease of GRACE. This gives our young one a tool that she relates to and can use easily to express herself without the cumbersome inconvenience of an enormous folder and all the work that goes into it as their needs grow and change. I can see why this app has won awards it's a credit to the developers, I can't speak highly enough. Also gobsmacked that anyone would hesitate to pay a very reasonable price for a learning and communication tool that is in my opinion priceless! Obviously the developers are committed to it's continued development, clearly evident in the latest update. Frankly any negative comments about this app are in my opinion nitpicking and not helpful in the least. Like countless others, I think it's wonderful.

Organization and useful. This is a great app. Very useful to some people who are supplimenting thier communcation with visual cues. Next wishful addittional and sound / speech to visuals and allow voice recording customizable folders and importing your own pictures is one of the winning features.

Be aware.... This app looked like it had great potential but unfortunately, the words do not get read out loud when pressed. It kind of defeats the purpose of supporting non-verbal people.

Wow!. I simply adore this update! Great job every one in making a great app even better :) GRACE is mostly to be used by people who use the PECS binder. The concept is the same, but I love that my autistic son is no longer carrying around a enormous (and heavy) binder with his pictures falling constantly off. The ability to be able to add pictures with the camera in the iPod makes working with the system very practical.

What a price gouging, what a huge disappointment!!! Don. I have just purchased, tried this so-called "app" for a few minutes, only to pull my hair for my gullible decision, feeling extremely frustrated by this horrible app. If your kid can use this app by himself, your kid might not be even autistic. I'll call Apple or Grace or whatever to cancel my purcahse for this app that's absolutely the worst and most expensive app I have ever purchased either for iPhone or iPad. I can't even sleep now for what I saw from this app. You shouldn't gouge those poor parents of children with autism like this. I feel so betrayed and used...

Great app!. Communication is every person's right and this wonderful app allows those with autism to do this easily! Sure it can be improved - every app can - but the core is simple, functional and practical. It doesn't replace true interaction with an electronic voice which I think is necessary to promote eye contact between the child and caregiver - especially when speech is just starting. It's great that you can add pics and personalize the app for each user - but it will be good when they add the option for category sorting. It will also be helpful to expand on the categories to include "Things I need" for pencils and straws and boring stuff that one needs to ask for. I know that the woman who designed this product has used it to great effect with her own child and with other kids - and that it's been truly life-changing for a lot of people. I would totally give it a go!
