Overall a great study/teaching tool. I really love the way it's set up like a textbook. Each lesson has a review at the end. I wish there were more questions because ultimately you do wish to learn all of these words. Not just "pass the class" as if in school. So I had to get a few supplementary apps to review more. Especially the kanas. But overall I really love it so far. You get to learn a bit about the culture and history along the way too which is helpful if you plan on going or living there. Which I do.

Still a fantastic app after all these years.. This was one of the first apps I ever bought back when I got my iPhone in high school. It explains Japanese beautifully and it still receives updates. I even noticed that now it has notes regarding changes to some text compared to the previous version. This is a fantastic app, and if you are looking into learning Japanese, it’s a great companion.

Just a couple of very minor things. I am loving this app. I struggle with language. Even learning new things in my native language can sometimes be a struggle, but I am slowly progressing along. A couple of minor things are missing in my opinion. One example is 0 (zero) in the numbers chapter. But after writing to the author, he responded with the answer I needed to understand zero in Japanese. I would have originally rated this with 4 stars, but his service immediately brought it to 5.

Best learning app!. This is by far the best way I've tried to self-learn Japanese. I've tried a PC program like Rosetta and an audio program, but this is by far the best way to learn for me. It's very well explained and has audio clips from a native speaker who speaks clearly so you can hear the subtle sounds. It has easy navigation for chapter reviews, tests, and a great game for helping test/memorize the katakana/hiragana characters. It's also decently priced for the full version and the lite version has a lot to offer so you can make an informed decision whether to purchase the full app or not. I couldn't rate this app higher or recommend it more. Thanks for this wonderful app! I also recommend anki app for flash card style help. It pairs well with this app.

One of the best. This app is incredible. It, along with the intermediate, will get you fairly far into Japanese. I couple it with Genki and Textfugu to get as much as I can. Though I use Genki and Textfugu, I keep coming back to HJ. The cultural notes are exquisite. The stroke animations are perfect. They lay out all you need to know to get a good foundation. I can't recommend it highly enough. The ONLY downside is that the same program is available on multiple platforms at different costs. I bought both HJ apps for 13 dollars here when I really wanted the PC version, which costs ~18 each. There is no universal access.

Amazing. It is a really great app for learning Japanese, it teaches you the kana, the correct pronunciation of the words, the use of the words, and also more direct translations so you don't look stupid when you actually have the chance to speak with a native speaker. It's also fun on top of everything else. It's the super explanatory part missing in all the other Japanese apps that actually makes Japanese make sense. The only thing this app is missing is the super repetition that you can easily get in any other Japanese app out there, so not a hard fix at all. Ten out of ten, would recommend.

The Gold Standard. In my opinion, Human Japanese remains unparalleled and my go-to choice in my recommendations to people starting out with the language. All those years ago when I first used the Intro+Intermediate apps, it was my foundation, my staple with my budding Japanese journey. This beats any novice textbook in my opinion. All these years later I found myself returning to Human Japanese to refresh myself with Japanese. From the bottom of my heart, I thank the development team for creating a truly special piece of work, at a fraction of a cost it would take textbooks to attempt to even come close to this. If you're on the fence, just do it, you wont regret it. Always and forever, ありがとうございます。

Great app. If you are going to Japan next week and want to order sushi, download any phrasebook app on the store. If you actually want to learn Japanese, get this one. Teaches the grammar, not just the vocabulary. I would also recommend the free app Tae Kim's Learning Japanese, but this one has audio recordings of everything, and that is huge. It would be nice to be able to turn the screen vertically and make the font smaller. But five stars anyways.

The right way to learn Japanese. I have been searching for Japanese learning app for a while. So far this is the best. I especially like the comparison between English and Japanese in terms of culture and habits, which are usually missing in many other apps. If there is one thing I'd suggest for improvement, it would be more variety of exercises. I was using Duolingo for French as well and I really like Duolingo's exercise style. It would great this app can have more ways for users to practice.

Really wonderful for a returning student. I took Japanese in college (10 years ago), but had to let it drop after I graduated. At that point, I knew all the kana, some kanji, and could hold basic conversations; my skills went downhill considerably after that. Since then, I've been looking for something to refresh what I knew and put me on the path to learning more: after a few false starts, this turned out to be that app. The lessons proceed at a quick pace, but with plenty of opportunity to stop and practice, or to go back and refresh topics or vocabulary. The kana matching game is surprisingly helpful for keeping in practice. The cultural notes and explanations are top-notch. I've moved on to the next app (and am really hoping to eventually see an Advanced level 3) I started over pretty much from the beginning, despite many chapters of things that I still could handle from my decade-old lessons. It felt a little slow, but the culture notes were nice, and I ran across the occasional vocabulary I didn't remember, and after a dozen or so chapters I was feeling challenged. What this app won't do is teach you to speak the language out loud with any kind of real proficiency. Yeah, you can and should practice your pronunciations as you go, but without the ability to have it listen and correct you (which is beyond every other app I've seen, too) you'll need to seek out real Japanese speakers to practice. That's not a bad thing at all, in my opinion.

Really good. When I first started learning Japanese I didn't know where to start. Because I was (and still am) learning a new language on my own I had to figure out the best way to learn. This app is extremely good for anybody wanting to start learning Japanese. The only down fall is that this app has is not having any practice sheets to try to create a lot of your own sentences. Besides that it's pretty perfect. 👍🏻👍🏻

Excellent, but…. Why have you abandoned the human Japanese app? I just revisited it and was willing to pay an additional $15 in order to have the iPad version. Complete but, why should I bother? Although it should work for both the iPad and the iPhone, you made us pay twice. OK, I’m willing. Oh wait, you no longer care about this app. It’s really too bad since it is quite possibly the best Japanese learning language app ever. It’s really a pity that you don’t bother to answer any questions in app reviews. Completely incomprehensible.

Incredible find...I’m hooked!. Human Japanese is awesome!! It’s fun to read and full of information that’s extremely helpful and interesting too. I love it because unlike any other Japanese textbooks I have tried so far, Human Japanese is actually a page-turner! It had never occurred to me that a textbook could be like this. I feel like I lucked into private lessons with the best language teacher ever! (And it’s super affordable too.) I recommend it highly.

Fun, Never Frustrating. The app does a great job of teaching you exactly what you need to know when you need to know it. It provides ample opportunity to practice with lots of spoken pronunciations of the characters. I've been taking it slow (deliberately) but find the information on how to write, pronounce and recognize the different characters consistently useful time and time again. Highly recommended.

Learning Japanese made FUN and EASY. I never realized how straightforward it could be to learn the basics of Japanese. I'm self-teaching myself starting from nothing and this app provides such interesting explanations that the material just sticks with me. The quizzes at the end of each chapter reinforce everything. To be honest, with the number of lessons in this app I feel that the price is a steal! I'm so happy to have this app and I hope that by the end of lesson 40 there will be more lessons on the way!

It's decent. Grammar explanations are what makes this app shine. It's better than most books out there even if at times verbose. Severely lacking in terms of practice and retention, so it's mostly good as a reference. The worst part is that the iPad version is an entirely separate paid app. The fact it's the exact same UI on iPhone and iPad makes it even more irritating. It's a tacky business model. I wouldn't have bought the app had I noticed.

This app is terrific. I wish there was an app like this for every language. I'm so glad I bought it and it's making me feel very prepared and excited for my upcoming trip to Japan. I don't know how much I'll really be able to learn before that trip, but just getting the fundamentals of Japanese from a few hours with this app so far have been fun and fascinating, and I expect I'll keep going with it even after I've returned from Japan. I have nothing bad to say about this app; it's well-written, well-paced, and extremely engaging and clear.

Not far from godly. This program has made learning Japanese a fairly easy and enjoyable task! I took an interest in learning the language, and had been self teaching online from various websites. It was hard that way, and I never knew how much progress I was making. Now I get feedback, and can trust that what I'm learning is correct. There is audio of every word you learn, making it easy to know what the words sound like. There are cultural notes, experience points, organized chapters, and easy lessons. Now, I'm doing great! I am fourteen years old, but this program seems good for all ages. The lessons are clear, and go in an order that makes sense. It's inexpensive compared to many programs, but the contents are the best I have seen so far. The demo to this app was even better than the demo of Rosetta Stone, so it's really a great deal! I think you should check out this app, and know that once you try the free version, you will want to purchase it!

One of the best. This is without a doubt the best foreign language programs out there. It use a comprehensive and old school approach of teaching Japanese that immerses you in both the language and culture. I am terrible at learning new languages but I found this program to work great. This program works best if you want to make notes and put in a little extra effort. It would still work as a casual learning program if you repeated chapters. Great app for those interested in Japanese. I would also recommend there PC platform too.

Absolutely amazing. Astounding.. I would recommend this application to any and every person who is looking to get in to the study of the Japanese language. Not only does it cover grammar, but also vocabulary. The intermediate version goes in to kanji as well, if my memory serves correctly, thus giving you the three keys to learning the Japanese language. You will eventually need more sources to continue to learn, but this app is VERY extensive.

Very useful. This app is very useful, it takes you one baby step at a time into Japanese grammar. I can see somebody criticizing the way the lessons are arranged or how in depth it goes. But honestly if you are just starting this will be very helpful, you will grasp different concepts of the language without getting overwhelmed. By the time you finish you will be able to tackle more in-depth books about grammar or expand vocabulary a lot easier. Great app for beginners. And the fact that there's audio and a grammar break down in every example, but only if you click on it, lets you practice every single time you read an exercise/example.

Excellent. This is a spectacular app. It has been absolutely crucial in my study of Japanese; it has taught me so much, and I still have more to go. Human Japanese was clearly thought out, from the order the subjects are presented, to the teaching style, even down to the app's design, which uses inviting and warm colors that are easy on the eyes. A great thing about Human Japanese is that it doesn't just teach you the language—it also teaches the culture and geography of Japan. I've yet to find another learning tool this good. My only complaint (if you want to call it that) is that it's not offered for other languages. I would love to see a Human Italian or Human Spanish.

Great!. I'm only a few chapters in but it has been so helpful! I bought this bundled with intermediate for about 14 dollars I believe, and I'm so happy, the price is a steal! I love how it shows you the incorrect way for a few things because I've caught myself doing it like that before, and thats something you won't get with just a text book. When I've tried studying Japanese before i always get bogged down, but this app makes it fun to do.

An excellent foot in the door. I used the Human Japanese beginner and intermediate app when I was first starting to learn Japanese, and it was honestly the best thing I could do to seriously start learning and practicing my Japanese everyday. Having an app that I could use wherever I went really helped me keep up with my practice everyday. There’s pretty thorough explanations to grammar concepts that you don’t get from normal textbooks, and I even cracked a few laughs when going through some of the explanations and side notes the author leaves to make the concepts relatable to English language concepts. I suggest this app to anyone who wants to start learning Japanese fundamentals but doesn’t know where to begin, as well as anyone who wants to learn, but can’t take a book with them everywhere they go. I honestly wish I had started using this app many years ago. I also suggest the Satori reader app that the developers made to help learners that finish Human Japanese Intermediate.

Best app I’ve found. I work for a Japanese company and travel to Japan frequently. I’ve always found it difficult to really master Japanese as I lose so much between trips and as a global company English is the common language so we don’t use Japanese as much as you might expect. The big benefit to me with this app is learning to read and write plus understanding the nuances of the different syllabaries. It let’s me understand conversations and menus etc. much better and helps me form sentences when I need to speak strictly in Japanese. Thanks for a great, well designed app.

Best App Around. One thing I love about this app is you can learn at your own pace. I've bought this app a while ago, probably 09' or 10'. I briefly read through the first few chapters. I didn't really hook as I didn't have the sort of ambition you need to start to learn a new language. Then I've made some friends that speak Japanese. Finally, I had a reason to learn this language. So, I've picked it up again back in 13'. It's been over a year now, with countless hours. I enjoy reading this app as it is engaging and just fun to read. Kinda like talking to a friend with the same interest in you. I made sure I understood every sentence in this book, and thankfully, I've learned many other things outside this app through talking to my friends. It really encourages you to share what you've learned in the real world. Now, I think it is safe to say I can start the intermediate version. Who knows how long that will take. But as long as it remains fun, I can read this software forever. Get this app! If you really want to learn Japanese. Just know, you can learn any language you want, just like the language you were born into.

Perfectly structured into bite-sized chapters. I grew up with several foreign exchange students from Japan. I took Japanese all four years of High School. My university didn't offer Japanese, so I dropped it and haven't practiced it for nearly 17 years. Still, I love the culture and the food and the people and it has been a dream of mine to visit Japan. With a first time visit to Japan in my near future, this app has been perfect for getting back on board remembering the things long forgotten and recalling proper sentence structure. At chapter 31 I am recognizing that I need to supplement this with more listening to speech and speaking, but this is my basis for truly understanding what I am drilling in other practice apps.

Best Japanese language app. This is definitely the best Japanese language app I have used so far. I took 1 year of Japanese in college have tried multiple apps and books to continue learning but have struggled to find much use out of any of them. I found this app extremely informative and filling in a lot of the gaps in my understanding. It is very detailed in it’s breakdown of the Japanese language, which really helps to adjust your thinking when trying to form and understand Japanese.

Amazing App. I can't even put into words how much I love this app except to say I so look forward to my lessons. The lessons are very clear and anticipate my questions well. I think that is extremely "human". It lives up to the mission and promise of the creator that it is fun to use and yet impart the ability to teach user Japanese. I have tried so many years and so many ways, but never enjoyed as much as I do now learning via this app. The only thing I would like to see is the ability to slow down the Japanese pronunciation. Amazing app. This is such an awesome app to have on my phone, i use it in conjunction with WaniKani for learning kanji. Between the grammar in HJ and supplementary apps, i feel like learning japanese has been a breeze so far; definitely worth the price, especially for one time. I admit i got stuck around chapter 8 with reading everything, but once i started taking a break from grammar and learning kanji and vocab, things started to click when i came back to HJ. Couldn't be happier, and i'm excited to learn at my own pace (which is picking up quite a bit).

Spectacular!. What makes this the best learning tool is not the language instruction. There are many tools available to help teach you the Japanese language, but only Human Japanese adds the cultural background that helps you put the language in context. This is hands-down the best language learning app I own (and I own many), and asked from living in Japan is likely the best way for a gaijin such as myself to learn.

人間の日本語. This is the best possible resource I have found for anyone learning Japanese. I details every point of beginner grammar ( assuming you buy the intermediate version after finishing this one), and gives tips on culture as well as aiding in pronunciation. You really get to know the author of the app over time, and he paces the learning and exercises very well. The photos that accompany many of the lessons are artistically captured and provide beautiful visual insight. The only fault this app has is that it does not exist for Chinese, Korean, Arabic, or any other asian language for that matter. I also wish the series went on to the advanced level. All that aside, It is the best foundation I could imagine for Japanese aside from a live teacher or complete immersion.

More like a tutor than textbook. There is a connection between the author of this app and the reader, it's not cold like a textbook. The app has a more conversational feel which engages the learner and makes one stick with the app. Other Japanese learning apps are simply dictionaries or vocabularies, but this app guides the user through the very basics smoothly. At the end of each chapter there is an interactive quiz and vocabulary building quiz to help cement what was learned. The Japanese words need only a simple tap and audio of a native Japanese speaker reading the words plays. That feature is one major reason this app is superior to a textbook. Well-designed, friendly author, lots of content, and audio examples make this my favorite Japanese language learning app. I took 3 semesters of Japanese in high school and I think I learned as much then as I did in this app

The best way to learn!. I’ve tried dozens of different ways to learn Japanese over the years, and this is definitely the best source of instruction I’ve found so far. Just treat these textbooks like a class, and you’ll be learning in no time! This isn’t just about memorizing phrases and letters, these books tell you exactly what you’re learning and why it’s in that order. Not only that, but the reading itself is entertaining and informative. Do yourself a favor and get these textbooks!!

Fantastic way to learn Japanese. My brother and I began studying Japanese using HJ when I was a sophomore in high school. We loved the way everything was explained and presented, and we loved how we also learned about Japanese culture through this app. When I went to university, I selected Japanese as one of my majors. Just from studying with the Human Japanese apps (beginner and intermediate), which cost a total of $20, I was able to test into 3rd year Japanese, saving literally thousands of dollars. Now, I use this app as a sort of “textbook” to give my mom Japanese lessons every week. I could not be more happy with Human Japanese.

Extremely well designed. Human Japanese is an excellent app. I say this confidently as someone with a smattering of experience in both instructional design and Japanese language. The explanations are crystal clear in a voice that never bores, with a clean visual design that is easy to read. Each example is available for listening and can be broken down into all its individual parts if the learner wishes. The topics are seamlessly progressive so you will follow along at every step. I am a subway commuter, so I also love the fact that the app is 100% offline, and I can learn and practice even without an Internet connection. If I had a wish list for this app apart from Duolingo-style translation activities, I would like to have all the kana and stroke order animations together in one place for reference. I would also like to be able to shuffle quizzes and conversations from multiple chapters, and be able to jump to the chapter where a particular sentence or question comes from if I need to review it. (I finished all the lessons now but to review conversations I have to go through chapter by chapter.) However, these are just possible improvements to something that is already いいです. I'll be moving on to the intermediate level soon. どうもありがとうございます！

Excellent teaching app. I really enjoy how the author engages with the learner in this app. I started watching a lot of anime and then I decided to learn some Japanese. I tried the demo of this app and I was immediately hooked. After a month or two, I was starting to pick up different words and phrases. It's really helpful and one can learn at his/her own pace. It is convenient to sometimes go back a few chapters and refresh the memory. Great app, I didn't know any Japanese besides the three words you see in the movies, and this has helped a lot so far

BEST app for learning Japanese. Better than a textbook. The writer of this app really takes the time to teach you the characters before throwing you right in. The constant switch between characters, vocabulary, and cultural notes keep it interesting. Interactive quizzes at the end help you remember what you've learned. I didn't hesitate a bit to upgrade to the full version. Doumo arigatou gozaimasu!!!

This is awesome. I tried out like a million apps trying to learn Japanese, they are all just giving you sentences to memorize, it doesn't actually teach you how to speak Japanese, but this app tells you what everything is doing in a sentence and why. Even though you will still have to memorize a few words, but it's because you have to know a few now no to actually understand the sentence. You HAVE to try this out, if you are still hesitating about whether you should spend your money on this app, you could try our the human Japanese lite, it's the same as this but only has 5 chapters to let you try it out. Last thing, all this came from myself, it's NOT the app who told me to write a 5 star review.

Better than a college class. If you are an English speaker and want to learn Japanese, BUY THIS APP!!! I took Japanese 101 in college and I enjoyed it BUT, my teacher was Japanese and as such, there was a bit of a bridge to cross for my teacher to relate concepts to us because for her, it was instinctual. This program was written by a native English speaker who sees the problem from our side of “the bridge” and he gives much better explanations and relates it more naturally to us because he is one of us. If you complete this beginner app, you will speak and understand more Japanese than I did after a full semester of college level Japanese. Seriously, buy this. It’s good.

Love it ! :). I love this app so far. I finished the lite version of this and immediately bought this one. I have recently decided to learn Japanese and I was struggling to find a starting point because I'm unable to take classes at the moment. This app gave me the structure I was looking for. I considered buying books and something like Rosetta Stone but I was hesitant because of bad reviews and the prices. When I came across this app I couldn't put it down. The way this app teaches makes it feel a lot less like work and it breaks it down in a way that anyone can understand. This app is designed perfectly for beginners and I highly recommend it as a starting point. It's easy to understand and relaxing. You never feel like there is a bunch of new things thrown at you at once. Instead everything is done step by step.

Best app for getting into Japanese. I was a bit concerned about the price of this app at first. But after having tried other online resources with little success I finally decided to buy it, and I'm glad I did. The text is incredibly well written and easy to understand. Nothing like reading a dry and boring textbook. Although I haven't finished the beginner course yet I went ahead and purchased the bundle that includes the intermediate course as well since I know I'll enjoy it as much as this one. My only wish is that there would be more review and grammar exercises available for practice. Other than that it's an excellent app and I highly recommend it to anyone studying the language.

Convenient, excellent. I really like this app because it is straight forward, cuts to the point, methodical, and convenient because it's always available to take another bite whenever I have a few minutes free. That keeps it fresh. You use it or lose it, and this app allows me to keep using it, even if its just a small bit at a time. I feel as if I'm learning.

Must have JPN app. After trying out the lite versions, I bought the Human Japanese bundle and, although I'm not one to spend money on apps, I am far from disappointed. There are few resources for learning Japanese (for pay or otherwise) that do a good job helping you learn. This is the exception. You'll learn to read and speak, but also tidbits of culture that give the learning process more purpose and keep you motivated. Don't think about it, just buy if you are interested in Japanese or Japan itself. It's definitely a good value.

Best Japanese learning app out there, hands down.. (I was in the middle of leaving a longer more thorough review about how great this app was, but it got deleted since I clicked to install a different app later on, so I'll try and keep this short and to the point.) -If you're skeptical about purchasing this app, try the free version, Human Japanese Lite, first. It took me through all of Hiragana, which is well worth it for a free app. -Teaches you what you need to know, when you need to know it. The saying, "There's a time and a place for everything" comes to mind. -Teaches you in a way that makes sense, hence the name "Human Japanese"; teaches in a "down to earth" like method, almost as if you were, you know, human? :P -Teaches in plenty of detail, along with examples to help with understanding and to retain the knowledge. -Quizzes you at the end of each chapter to make sure you're ready for the next one (with the option to disable if you're not fond of the feature). If you're really interested in learning Japanese, there is no reason to not get this app.

Best language learning app out there. Totally worth getting. Wow! This is THE best app I have ever used; I loved the way the author mixed some comedy in the text to make it more fun... Also the way he explained things made everything SO MUCH easier, he shows you how simple it really is to learn Japanese. Another thing that makes this app better than other language learning apps, is the cultural notes, they give you a good idea about what it’s like to visit, work or live in Japan. I also like the cultural notes because they give you a break after a long grammar lesson and you always get some really nice photos. The only bad thing about this app is that the author sometimes didn’t know how to prioritize the vocabulary, for example: he teaches you the word for "green grape" before the word for "mom" or "school". Ok, now to those who are wondering wether to get this app or not, I have one thing to say: GET IT NOW it’s totally worth it. And finally to those who made this app: Well done snd THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!どうもありがとごさいました!!!!

Amazing. No other app can compare to this one. It teaches without being boring, it switches up the topics so the process doesn't drag, and the narrative gives every day examples in easy English to help you understand the more complicated topics. Very well made and I can't wait to continue learning. The audio really helps, and it teaches not only the language, but the culture too. Absolutely worth the (cheap!) price, plus some.

I love this app but…. This app is great. I had it on my old phone and I was able to make steady progress with the language by using the app for a short per of time everyday and I love the result. But my phone broke and I ended up having to re-buy it. Now it won't let me sign in. The keyboard does not disappear when I'm done with my user name and so I cannot hit "done". This is very frustrating for me so if someone could address this issue it would be much appreciated.

Excellent. I've been studying Japanese for about 8 months now and the more I learn, the more I appreciated Human Japanese. The lessons are clearly and concisely presented with a lot of examples. I like the quizzes at the end of each section but wish that there were more questions. I also loved learning Hiragana and like it that HJ dropped automatically showing the Romaji translations after a while, forcing me to practice reading using just the Hiragana. Excellent app! My husband just told me that there's an advanced version now--hurray. Now I can keep learning!

Beautifully Accessible. I have several apps for learning Japanese, and I like all of them for different reasons and purposes; however, Human Japanese is the most effective of any I've tried. It guides me through the language, giving me fascinating historical, grammatical, and useful reasons for the way the language works. It's clean and elegant. I love the quizzes. It has all the helps you'd want (audio from native speakers, visual and auditory comparisons, animations for stroke order, bookmarks and note-booking, etc.). I love Human Japanese. It makes learning Japanese fun and fascinating!

Great Introduction .... however you really need to know hiragana and katakana before starting, while you are shown, hear and are tested on the kana there are no mnemoic memory aids... search tofugu hiragana. Otherwise this is fantastic, I completed each chapter handwriting all sentences, vocab and test answers and memorised all vocab thanks to the memrise course - search memrise human japanese. Going on to genki 1 before starting HJ Intermediate.

Leaves the others far behind ... Without any doubt, this is the best Japanese learning app. Lots of content, audio and examples, with clear explainations. Grammar - so many other apps ignore it. Best Japanese 101 course on the iPhone.. By far the best learn japanese app on the iPhone, it's well written, easy to understand and easy to use. After trying others this is the only one that seemed to be written at a good learning pace. My only suggestion would to build in a better flash card system to help learn the huge amouts of words you have to learn, it does not concerntrate on words you are having trouble learning.

Highly recommended app for Japanese beginners!. Highly recommended app for Japanese Beginners. Everything is explained concisely and accurately and it's very easy to understand all of the concepts. The grammar points in particular are explained very well, particularly the difference between the は and が particles, which some other learning materials have trouble describing. All of the examples are useful for explaining the concepts and the voice recordings are superb. The book might move a bit too fast for absolute beginners, but if you can already read hiragana and katakana you'll really enjoy the book.

Total Engagement. Simply incredible.. The thing I love the most is the conversational tone this app is written in. It makes the learning fun and easy unlike an information dump from a textbook. Having the ability to attempt to read a sentence, and then check whether you correctly translated is incredibly powerful. Furthermore to this, you can tap to listen/practice the pronunciation. I love this app, and I will no doubt be purchasing the intermediate edition!

Easy for anyone to learn!. Great app. Written in such a way that anyone can understand and learn. I bought the app two days ago and I (almost) can read hiragana. You'll want a workbook to write in while using it though.

Brilliant.. I bought this app ages ago, with the interest of learning Japanese as a hobby. But I never did have the time to properly invest in it. However, i've recently started university, and taking Japanese as a breadth course. This is when I truly discovered how amazing this app is. Thanks to this app, I was able to learn a whole new alphabet (Hiragana) in no more than 3 hours! A lot more useful than my textbook. Each lesson is fun and engaging, which helps to make you eager to continue learning this beautiful language. In conclusion, a must have app for anyone new to Japanese.

Awesome!!!. This app teaches you how to speak Japanese in an easy to understand way, unlike other apps that are so confusing. At school in Japanese, I could never understand anything. But now I can read and speak (sort of) Japanese!

Great for the beginner.. Excellently laid out and designed app that provides everything a beginner needs to begin learning Japanese. I quickly upgraded to the full version at the conclusion of the first five chapters in the lite version. If I could suggest two things - The inclusion of a search feature would be very useful (perhaps with some Ingredients integration?) An possibly the rearrangement of some sections further towards the beginning - for example, moving the 'Counting Objects' chapter after the Numbers chapter, as counting objects are obviously a useful concept that could be tackled with not too much difficulty after learning the numbering system. Other than that, a good app for the aspiring beginner.

Sensational resource. I too have gone the path of the free trial and quickly moved to the full version. Absolutely well worth the price! Such a gentle and supportive intro to the language. Great for revision for those of us who have begun learning Japanese several times. Great work! I'd pay even more for a version with embedded video conversations, what about it?

Absolutely brilliant. As someone who doesn’t have time to receive a formal education in Japanese (but learnt the basics in school), this is an incredible course to fill out my knowledge. Seriously, dive right in with this one. It starts out with the basics of the basics and is an excellent foundation for learning alongside other apps like anki and WaniKani.

Great app a must for beginners. It can feel a bit slow in the beginning but this helps build a foundation of knowledge. I didn't know any Japanese before using the light version and have received so many compliments on my pronunciation and handwriting I felt I had to buy the full version. It is worth every penny. I can't recommend this app enough.

Definitely the best I've used BUT.... It could be better. When practicing kanji strokes, why not have these touchable for pronunciation? Also, the look of kanji is different. The first appearance page has them looking differently to when they appear in the reading practice. I find that confusing later on in the chapter when there are lots of new characters. However. I like this app, and so far finding it super helpful.

Yes, recommended.. I particularly like the book mark. It’s a thoughtful touch. Useful when you’re getting into the weeds of the chapters. 3 years it took me to summon the patience to tackle the hiragana. Overjoyed that I persisted. Once started it took about 3 months in the end. One character per day and I got it. Now I’m about 4/5 of the way through the chapters and satisfied with my progress. I’m pretty sure I can do this. I’m on my way!

Excellent. I feel I am making great progress in a short amount of time, because the format is so enjoyable. There are some technical issues like occasional crashes, but the content more than makes up for it. It's a high price for an app, but it is far cheaper than any other effective language-learning approach. Some improvements I would like to see are an expansion to include more conversational, in-depth audio, and a quick reference to all the characters and words, rather than having to hunt them down among the chapters.

Mr. Solid grounding - what I thought was going to be nothing but review actually included information I hadn't learned before, and the explanations for language idiosyncrasies, like why na-adjectives are what they are, was really helpful. Went through it quickly because I'd studied a lot of it before, but very easy to use and great to have native speakers for all the vocabulary

Fantastic Learning Tool. I am really enjoying this app, I like the way it only unlocks as you progress and tests you. The explanations are interesting and easy to understand. I'm looking forward to getting to intermediate. Well worth the cost:-)

Best app i have. This is by far the best app i have. i memorised the entire alphapet (just hiragana not kanakata XD) and learned basic grammer in a week. And im only on chapter 6 of 40. Its well worth the money if u dont know any japanese and u want sonewhere to start ty for the great app.

If you're learning Japanese, get this app. Simply the best app for learning Japanese vocabulary and grammar. You should probably learn hiragana and katakana characters first though otherwise, brilliant resource for learning Japanese.

Great app especially for beginners/those revising. *Tried out the lite version before purchasing the bundle with both apps* I'm currently taking beginner Japanese classes at my local language centre and unfortunately, the teacher doesn't explain the grammar points well so I often have to re-read notes for them to stick. Not with this app though. Everything is explained clearly and is very easy to understand. Felt that bit by bit, things finally made sense. Loved the chapters about Japanese culture too, they were very interesting and a nice break from all the studying. I did find however that the chapters were often quite vocab heavy so it would have been easier to revise them if there was a compiled list at the end rather than having to flip back and forth trying to find the vocab in each chapter. Other than that, this is my first time purchasing a language app and I'm really pleased with them. I can really see the effort that went into creating both apps and I can't wait for future releases from the HJ team! ありがとうございます!

Great App. I haven't been studying long but I've bought a couple books and even tried Rosetta Stone and this is the most interesting and organized program. I'm not scared to jump into learning Japanese. Already I know this is a great investment. Yatta!!!

Best iPod app, quality content. By far the most useful and worthwhile app available. The author appears to have genuine enthusiasm for this subject and it shows in the quality of her/his writing and the ingenuity of the app. I enjoyed learning with the app so much, it inspired me to join a Japanese school, however I'm still using the app for reference and practice. Great Japanese App. This is probably as close to being in a class as you're going to get. While you could argue that this app leans more to the learning "about" Japanese end of the scale, there are plenty of ways to learn Japanese vocabulary elsewhere. This app helps you learn how to USE that vocabulary.

Great app. By far the best app for learning Japanese. The whole experience is great in presentation of the information and the logical progression. The only downside is there are no exercises to solidify your understand minus the short tests at the end of the chapters so you need to take it upon yourself to make ways to practice the information.

Great app!. I'm very impressed with the Human Japanese program. I use it everyday to learn Japanese and it makes it very easy to actually learn. Very much worth the $15.00 for the combo bundle. The only thing I wonder is if I was to download the version for my computer would it be able to verify my email so that I would have a full copy since I purchased it on my phone. Otherwise, totally worth the money!

Best app by far for learning Japanese. I've tried about a dozen apps for learning Japanese, but this one is on a whole different scale. Unlike the other monotone memorization camps, this app did really well as to explaining everything in an interesting way. It was interesting from Beginning to end and I Highly reccomend this to anyone (and I often reccomend this to friends aswell) who is thinking of tackling the wonderful language of Japanese.

Personable and Fun. This app is hands down the best language learning experience I've ever had. Even learning French in French immersion wasn't as organized, interesting and useful. The app also feels like you have your own personal instructor who tells you funny jokes. The fact that the creator took the time to make such a great app is amazing to me. It's not one of those language apps that teach each language the same way, it's specifically designed for the language and I wish there was an app like this designed for each language I want to learn by this developer. I'm onto the intermediate app already! Please make an advanced one!

Excellent learning app. 10/10. In less than 2 weeks, using the app each day, i'm now able to read hiragana and a bit of katakana without major difficulties. I learn new vocabulary, and more about japanese culture. A must have app. I did all that with the lite version so give it a try, i just bought the full version, the guy deserves my money more than any app i've tried.

Best way to learn Japanese. I have paid for a few programs to learn Japanese and have spent allot of money on them, this app is by far the best way to learn the language. Well worth the 10$!. I first got the free version and it was the most useful thing I have read. I recently went to Japan and every single thing in this app helped my japanese incredibley. I just bought the full version because even just the first 10 chapters taught me soooo much. i would have bought it if it was 20$ or more because it taught me alot more than the 100's of dollars i spend on textbooks and dictionarys and workbooks! Perfect introduction to a new language. Starting out as a complete beginner in Japanese, I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of options available for self-study. Coming from a background in education and music, I knew I was looking for two things. First, I knew I wanted an app that would allow me to practice on a daily basis wherever I happened to be. Secondly I needed a resource that would be a kind of one-stop shop and save me endless Google searches. Human Japanese fills both those requirements, especially the latter. The author’s explanations along with the practice quizzes and exercises have been indispensable to me. I currently use a number of different apps, each with slightly different strengths, but Human Japanese is the one I keep running to for help. Couldn’t have asked for a better 先生! ありがとうございます！

かんたん. Ça marche assez bien, mais il faut savoir que le japonais est une langue vachement difficile et t'auras besoin de beaucoup de temps et d'effort. Mais fais-le! On va réussir, puis après on parlera couramment et on va aller au Japon et on mangera du sushi et on embrassera tous les nanas.

Excellent introduction to the Japanese Language. Human Japanese is a quality application that will be very useful for people new to Japanese or for students of Japanese who want a quick review of the basics. The information is well laid out. It feels like you are reading a well written text book, but with the added bonus of having multimedia built into it. The author has put a lot of thought into the content of this app. It is well structured and has a beautiful interface. There are lots of small interactive games to help you with the tedious task of memorizing Japanese characters and words and the mix of vocabulary study, culture and history is well balanced. There are tons of Japanese education apps on iTunes at the moment. Almost all of them are glorified flash-card programs. Human Japanese is not one of them. It is well worth the asking price and one of the best apps I have bought this year. Hopefully the company will release levels in the future!

Best Place to Start. When I decided I wanted to learn Japanese, I felt overwhelmed. I still do. But the authors of this app understand this, and go slow enough for me to understand and follow along. The writing is conversational rather than technical, and I *really* like that. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we know this is hard, but start here. We'll cover more later."

Excellent for beginners and reviewing!. As someone that learned and forgot, this is an excellent app! Learn all new things, even if your just using this for review. The extra information about Japan, the language, and all of that fun stuff makes it fresh and new, even if you know your hiragana and katakana.

Best app dedicated to Japanese. Not like the other apps that have multiple languages that you can choose to learn from this one is solely dedicated to teaching Japanese and does so greatly. It is at least one of my top two learning apps and the other being Memrise. I would not hesitate to buy this app again if I did not already know about it.

Good app. So far so good! I have finished the first 2 chapters and I am on chapter 3. This isn’t the first app that I have used to learn Japanese. I like how in the description this app was called your personal sensei in a box. It’s like an all-in-one Japanese app that has everything you need.

Wonderful!!!. I started learning Japanese a few years ago, and used this app. Then I stopped learning. But when I decided recently to start it up again, I returned to this app because I love the way it flows! The audio attached to the lessons is a wonderful tool to help with correct pronunciation and the review quizzes are not overbearing. I will always refer friends wanting to learn to this app! Really great Japanese program. I was referred to the program from a Japanese learning group. So far enjoying the course. He makes things easy to understand. Best course for an awesome price.

Closest thing to a live teacher. I use HJ in conjugation with some books on learning Japanese. HJ really reinforces what I have in books BUT does a great job of explaining what is going on with the language. You can use it alone I am sure, but I really like it as a great learning aid. Well worth the money.

It's almost like being back in class.. This app is fantastic. It's very in-depth and easy to follow. I've tried multiple other sources for learning Japanese but this one takes the cake. In the span of a day I learned the entire Hiragana alphabet. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Insanely entertaining and educational. I never thought I would have this much fun with learning a language. Everything is explained well and it is very obvious that the teacher is proficient with both languages. Way better than the Pimsleur approach or Rosetta Stone. I'm also doing the Pimsleur approach with this app and I like Human Japanese more. Totally worth it.

How had I not heard of this before??. I honestly believe this is the best beginning tool for learning Japanese. In the three days I've had this I've learned more than the three years I've been studying... $10 dollars is nothing for an app as amazing as this! SERIOUSLY, just get it.

Money Well Spent. The Human Japanese teaching method is an engaging learning experience. You'll love the history tidbits, and the chapter reviews forcing you to read and understand what it is you just learned. Don't spend hundreds of dollars on other learning systems.

Great resource when using Duolingo. I find the synergy between this app and Duolingo to be very good. Trying to learn Japanese using either app on its own is tough. However using this app along with Duolingo is near perfect. This app provides the logic behind Japanese sentence structures while Duolingo provides a fun way to drill Japanese vocabulary and Kana.

More engaging than Genki. I was struggling with the Genki textbooks, but Human Japanese has engaging lessons that are comprehensive, yet understandable and interesting. 10/10 would recommend. I only wish that the iPad version was a bit more optimized for the size of the screen, but it is a very minor nitpick. I’d recommend using this along side the Human Japanese Anki deck to help with vocabulary memorization.

Great app!. I started learning Japanese (にほんじん) with this app. I'm still a beginner, but I'm making progress. This app has a great way of describing the language and keeping it interesting. The quizzes at the end of each chapter have been great at testing my knowledge. I'm looking forward to continuing my education with this app.

The best learning app you will ever own. I am studying for the JLPT N5 and this app has been the best tool I have discovered so far. It reviews what I already know and sheds light on the language in an easily digestible way. It makes learning not so daunting. If you are serious about learning Japanese, get this app and the intermediate. It will rock your world.

Sugoi ne!. I love this App. I think The creatires of HJ was born to make this App because of how well it is executed. The lessons are clear, the writing fun, and the aesthetic pleasing. My Japanese made leaps and bounds of improvement compared to every other site or book I have tried. Download it!

Makes learning Japanese a breeze. Exaggeration. Japanese is still far from easy but Human Japanese makes it easier--and pleasant. Great writing and use of multimedia. The best way to learn to write kana! But not good at helping you remember them. The end of chapter quizzes are not helpful. I use Memrise to learn to read and remember kana.

Love it!. Very smooth interface and design. The app is easy to use and the teaching method is very understandable. This app makes learning a new language fun instead of tedious. I have not experienced any technical issues at all. I love the clean interface. I have learned so much in a way that I can actually understand and remember. This app is great.

Great ap. I wish the Japanese vocabulary words were written in the kana they are meant to be, even in the beginning of the lessons. It's hard to learn it one way and then have to learn it the right way all over again. Otherwise, great ap for learning the basics.

The Best And Most User Friendly Way to Learn. I’ve tried different apps and sites and this is the best way for me to learn so far. The way the language is explained feels personable and speaks in a way that compares what we’re familiar with in English to how it would/wouldn’t work in Japanese. It also feels like a modern person is explaining it to you as opposed to a cold distant textbook. LOVE IT!

Very good app, almost complete. Getting back on the horse and picking up my japanese studies is something that I have been postponing for quite a while, but this app actually got me motivated. The language is really natural and some and the pacing is great, *almost* a 5-star app for me The only thing missing, to be honest, are exercises. You do get a few ones with the chapter review and test, but not nearly enough, ESPECIALLY when it comes to writing.

One of best Japanese learning apps. Learned about the app from a mention by the host of “Abroad in Japan,” Chris. He made the point that Duolingo is good for vocabulary and practice but is lacking in areas that “Human Japanese” is very good in. As a user of Duolingo, that critique of it matched my experience. I really like it, use it daily but feel my grammar is not progressing. HJ has lived up to the description. I am half way through the first app using it as a review. The lessons are clear, engaging, with a bit of challenge so you feel you progressing. I see there is an intermediate HJ and the same group produces Satori Reader (wish that was less expensive).

Logical and useful. I love the set up of this app! Instead of just having you memorize phrases, you actually learn parts of speech, grammar, etc, so that you can say what you want, not just repeat standard phrases. For some reason, I've had a really hard time find such thoroughness in other Japanese language tools. Highly recommend!

いいです. This app is wonderful. Not only does it teach you the Japanese language but you also get to learn about their culture! The way you're taught is in short intervals. You're taught in depth about the alphabets as well as learn some vocabulary. I would recommend this to anybody just getting into learning 日本語.

すごい. This is absolutely the best app for getting started in Japanese learning. In just a few months I could start stringing sentences together and I find the teachings amazingly easy to follow . I would give 5 stars 100x for this app and the intermediate version.

Great, easy to follow. I love that this app gives you context and explanations that you completely miss with something like Duolingo. This is more like a textbook in the form of an app, but it’s been an essential companion as I try to tackle the language.

Beat Japanese app. I bought this after doing the lite version. Humor, context, culture, grammar, history sprinkled in. This really helped me as I was struggling with grammar! Also it taught me a lot about WHY the language is what it is. 10/10

Well worth the money!. I love this app! It's made the infamously daunting task of learning Japanese easy, interesting, fun and entertaining! There's a great balance of history, useful phrases, cultural explanations and of course hiragana and katakana characters that are spaced out well enough to be fairly easily grasped. I wish I had started this years ago!

Enjoyable Japanese. I enjoy learning Japanese from this app. I think it's a good and comprehensive crash course for a person who has no experience. However, I wish that the vocabulary was split up more. Some chapters have more vocabulary than others and this was harder to remember all the words. Overall great app.

Fun, helpful and addicting!. I've always wanted to learn Japanese and this app has helped me start the journey. It does more than just teach you in an organized fashion, but also gives you appropriate background information that helps the language and the culture make more sense to those who adore Japanese culture but have never been there.

Best Language App. This app is the most engaging language learning app I've ever used. It's cheaper than the popular alternatives and, at least to me, better written, so if you're serious about learning Japanese, this app is for you.

Worth the $$$. I have Human Japanese on my home PC and love it but wanted to be able to review wherever I went. Sure it's a bummer I've gotta buy the program again but at only 1/10 or so what other comparable programs cost I could but it for my whole family before the price became a concern.

Most fun way to learn a hard language. I'm only on chapter 5 but love this app so much. It's well worth it and I have excelled quicker in the language with this app than I did with work books.

Perfect for self learning!. I've been self learning for around 2 months, and with a mix of HJ and Mango Languages, I know hiragana and conversation so well, in just a month of using these specific apps. I use others as well, but mainly for extra review. Human Japanese is amazing for learning history and writing, and even some vocabulary. I love it so much, I bought the bundle, and I'm pretty cheap lol.

Fun, Convenient Way to Learn. I'm trying again to learn Japanese, and it's been a good way to refresh words (and writing/speaking eccentricities) that I'd forgotten. It's a very friendly way to get back on track (and I wish I had it when learning the kana systems!)

Amazing!. This app is nothing short of amazing. I'm almost through the first course and am learning at a fast pace thanks to the layout and design of the app. The developers are great at keeping the information interesting and have a unique way of presenting material that makes it fun and easy to remember. If you want to learn Japanese, I definitely recommend this app!

Incredible app.. This is the most well written, and well constructed app that I have ever had the pleasure to use. Seriously, nothing comes close. It is extremely accessible and understandable. I paid for the full versions, and I have no regrets at all. I look forward to finishing them both and completing the course. Well worth the cost, and more. This app is a steal.

Great for starting out. I’m just starting out in Japanese and this has been a great tool so far. Really helps to present the foundations of Japanese so you can learn them easily. I also love that they integrate cultural lessons along with the language lessons. Helps to break up the monotony and put things in context.

Forget Rosetta Stone.. This is by far the best resource for learning a language. If there was a Human series for every language, I think we'd be seeing many more bi- and multilingual people around. I'm so excited to have finished up the first text and to move on to Intermediate!

Well written lessons. The chapters are thoughtfully laid out—you can tell that the dev is really passionate about teaching Japanese and that felt enthusiasm is what separates this app from all other foreign language apps. I definitely recommend Human Japanese if you're interested in learning about a new culture and a new beautiful language.
