Satori Reader App Description & Overview

What is satori reader app? Ready to take your Japanese reading and listening comprehension to the next level? Welcome to Satori Reader.

COMPELLING STORIES
Read from a growing library of engrossing stories written by native speakers for intermediate students, across genres such as fantasy, slice-of-life, thrillers, documentaries, news, and more.

AUDIO
Tap any sentence to hear it read aloud by native voice actors (no robots!).

ADAPTIVE KANJI USAGE
Crack the chicken-and-egg problem of reading kanji with our unique presentation engine, which adjusts the Japanese text to accommodate your actual knowledge. This allows you to challenge yourself for the kanji you should know without being overwhelmed by what you don't.

SMART DEFINITIONS
Tap any word for a definition. This is more than just an automated lookup. Satori Reader shows the actual sense of each word as it's being used in the sentence. For example, the particle の has many uses: it can indicate possession; it can turn the preceding verb or phrase into a noun; it can stand in for another word; and more. We show you exactly what is happening in every instance of every word.

FRIENDLY ANNOTATIONS
Gray underlines indicate longer annotations that break down tricky expressions, provide cultural background, or help you to read between the lines. Our editors work hard to anticipate what might be confusing and proactively help you to make sense of things. Good-bye, confusion. Hello, clarity!

SPACED REPETITION SYSTEM (SRS)
The built-in spaced repetition review system helps you to build your vocabulary. Create review cards instantly as you read. Each card you create takes along a snapshot of the sentence in which you encountered the word, further helping to cement it in your memory. You can even play back the audio of that sentence while reviewing the word!

HUMAN FEEDBACK

Worth the subscription. The other reviews do a good job of articulating all the good points of this app. It’s the best one I’ve found for studying Japanese. You get reading and listening practice, as well as a lot of helpful grammar notes if you want them. I like the stories and read along out loud after the narrator (shadowing). Very helpful app, thank you!

Happy Subscriber!. I’ve loved this app from day one. I’ve been a subscriber since it was first launched and I was a beta user as well. They provide so much variety of the excellent reading material, so there is something for everyone to enjoy (plus great voice acting). They include lots of high-quality explanations to the grammar and vocabulary. New content is added regularly. I am never bored learning Japanese at my own pace. The app receives nice improvements as well. Thank you to this awesome team for putting out such a great service! Love it!

I like what I am seeing!. I began using this app, but I am immediately interested in what it has to offer! They have a quite a few interesting interesting stories that I can’t wait to read! I like murder mysteries/events/stories so I am reading the Zama 9 murders one first. I like how you are able to see the meaning of each word then at the end you can find out what the whole sentence means which is really helpful. I can try to figure out for myself what it says then I can see if what I was thinking was right! I can’t wait to continue using this app and perhaps I will write another review once I have used this for a while! Keep up the good work!

Best reading app. Best reading app out there. So much care in the details. It’s the first study app i look forward to spending time on. The stories are interesting and make me excited to start the new chapters. Other reading apps can feel overwhelming but on Satori it’s easy to choose the level of difficulty right for you. Thanks for making such an easy-to-use app!

Well worth the money. I can’t say enough good things about Satori Reader. I hit a point in my learning where I knew that reading would be the most helpful thing, but I was having trouble finding reading material that I could handle. Satori Reader bridges this gap very well and gives you a quick and easy way to do lookups while also providing grammar notes. Sometimes I am still unsure about something in an article, but there is a discussion page for each one and usually someone has already asked the question I have so I can read the answer they received. I don’t typically review apps, but I feel a debt to Satori Reader due to how much it has helped me improve. I’ve read Genki, used graded readers, used Anki, and tried slowly working through native content with lookups. All of that has been useful (and in the case of Genki, required - this app does not teach you beginner japanese) but Satori Reader let me transition from studying grammar and doing Anki cards to actually reading, and it is now my primary study tool. I’m really glad this exists, I just wanted to take some time to leave a review because not enough people talk about this and there really isn’t anything like it.

Makes me happy. This app is indispensable. They really put a lot of care and effort into making what is essentially the optimal learning experience, especially when it comes to the detailed explanations for grammar points. It’s so refreshing to have a human-written explanation that really walks you through understanding a new sentence structure. When I learned that I could link this app to my WaniKani using its API token (which makes Satori Reader omit the furigana for kanji I’ve already learned) it literally made my day. Sincerest thanks to those who contributed to this app

Lots of value. Some things that set this app apart from some others: 1. Interesting stories with actual human voice acting and sound effects to really immerse you. 2. Clicking on an unknown word shows CONTEXT RELEVANT definitions and explanations on how certain terms are used, not just the usual dictionary form. 3. When you save words to study later, and you’re browsing your flash card list, you can see the sentence from which they were added from. 4. A team that very thoughtfully answers questions and patiently further explains grammar and other things on comments under the episode when asked. I just wish we had an option to highlight/save certain words with custom colors like some other readers allow. And the option to underline certain words according to their JLPT level would come in very handy since we can’t really tell even if we click a word to see its definition.

Great App. I love that there’s the ability to make and review SRS flash cards right from within the app, which saves me time. Being able to import known kanji from Wanikani was helpful as well. There’s notes on phrases and translation that add a context I would never have gotten reading by myself. Even if you’re a beginner like me worried about whether you have a sufficient vocabulary to enjoy Japanese stories, they have short dialogues that take place in common scenarios at restaurants, hotels, etc. which can be useful.

Thanks a lot for this wonderful app. Since I am a student, there is not much budget for me to go around and it makes it difficult for me to find good free resources to learn and practice my language skills, as I do it as a hobby and not as a profession or part of my studies. Thanks a lot for providing such a great resource. I will surely share this in my language learning community.

Simply the best app for Japanese Learning. I cannot believe I am 3 years in and just discovering this resource now! I am amazed, flabbergasted even, at the power that is now at my fingertips. To be able to check my understanding of not only individual words but sentences too! WITH human audio for each sentence... this is the future. This is the ultimate solution for learning to read ad comprehend. I am in love with this app.

One of the best. I’ve been studying Japanese off and on for decades and Satori Reader is one of the best resources I’ve ever used. A+.

Great app. Wish more people know this great app ☺️

Another request for more advanced content. I recently signed up and have been sampling some of the content. The concept is brilliant and the app design is very well thought out. So far it’s an amazing resource for those at the advanced-beginner to intermediate level. However, like a previous reviewer wrote, I too wish for more advanced content. More challenging vocab, audio read at the speed and tone that Japanese really use when speaking with each other, and maybe some dialects like natural Kansai-ben with no punches pulled. I get that the customer sweet spot isn’t the advanced learner, but if your app does it’s job, more and more of your customers will eventually reach that level.

There Is No Better App for Intermediate/Advanced Japanese. Satori Reader Is the best Japanese language app I have ever used. I was stuck for a long time trying to find suitable material to study. Everything I found was either too easy or too hard. This app is perfect. The material is challenging, yet fun and engaging. And the grammar notes are as fun to read as the stories. This app has inspired me to re-engage in learning Japanese again. I use Satori Reader for entertainment and Sticky Study for the kanji memorization. I just completed the N3 kanji and vocabulary lists. My plan is to finish N2 and N1 next year and then sit for the JLPT N1 exam. At 55, that would mark a great personal achievement. Thank you Satori Reader team for helping me rekindle my love for learning Japanese!

Almost perfect. I’m just getting going learning Japanese. This app is exactly what I was looking for to get started with reading outside of textbooks. The only thing that frustrates me is the speed control. It’s very difficult to use, and it seems to reset all the time (e.g., between uses of the app), so I pretty much give up trying to get it to speed more slowly. It would be nice if touching the top bar of controls didn’t scroll the page.

Incredible. This app has helped me so much in so little time. It is the only place I have found that didn’t only have readings that are too easy or too hard. On top of the amazing effectiveness and resources on this app, the stories are actually interesting and I want to keep reading.

Good content and explanations. This is a nice stepping stone to make native content more consumable. Very user friendly!

Love!. This company has great customer support, and the app has a large library of quality content. I’m a fan.

Amazing app for learning Japanese. This app has made it so much more enjoyable to spend time in Japanese. I have no patience for textbooks and this app is the perfect bridge between native content and foreign language instruction. If I were going to nitpick anything, it would be you can’t adjust the size and color of the text, but even that isn’t a huge deal for me. I just finished all the beginner level stories and I’m excited to continue to the next ones up! Thanks satori!!!

Buggy app not worth the subscription price. Much like the Human Japanese apps, this app is plagued by bugs that make using it aggravating to use. For example if you’re in a lesson and switch apps, Satori will no longer function until you force quit the app.

I love this app. I’m N2 level, and have returned to live in the US. I love this app because there are interesting stories at native level, spoken at a normal rate of speed, and you can choose to have kana, furigana, or just written as normal. Not only can you look up every word in the stories, but some of the word definitions and grammar points go rather in-depth. And then on top of all this you can generate a vocabulary study list that uses a type of space repetition (that doesn’t overdo it if you miss a few days, swamping you with reviews). Furthermore, I don’t always have a lot of time, but the story chapters are short and so you can really just sit back and spend about 10 minutes or so for a quick lesson if that’s all the time you have. If you want more, you can plow ahead, no problem. Very versatile. And given all of the beginner to intermediate level grammar lessons that they also include for those who wish, I can imagine this versatile app being very useful for a very wide range of learners, from beginners all the way to certain somewhat advanced levels. As long as they keep expanding their content to include a greater variety of subjects including higher levels, I don’t quite see why I would ever stop using this app.

Best Japanese App available. One of the best programs available to improve reading and listening - can easily be shadowed also. Keep up the amazing quality.

Great content!. Best Japanese learning tool I’ve ever found. I’ve tried a lot of tools to keep up on my Japanese but Satori makes it fun. I love all the notes in the articles that explain things that are a little difficult. Simply the best!

Love this App!. Cannot say enough awesome things about this app! I went through all of HJ intermediate and have been trying to get my hands on graded readers that fit my level. This app is everything I’ve been looking for in one place!

Exactly what I was looking for. I already speak Japanese but am now learning how to read. After getting half-way through Wanikani, I wanted to find something that would help me see kanji in natural situations. The stories are engaging and reuse some of the more difficult words multiple times. I find myself learning new words just by reading stories. I also appreciate the ease of use in finding definitions, detailed explanations, and marking words for further study. It's also well thought out in how it lets you select what kanji you wish to have furigana or not. I'm able to use my Wanikani API to have all my learned kanji noted and automatically updated. I don't really care for it's study section, but I already use Anki for that. It's pretty easy to transfer my marked words into Anki. All in all, a really great study tool.

Needs dark mode on mobile!. The app is great but I would love to see the option for dark mode. I usually read at night so it would be nice to not strain the eyes too hard.

Best Japanese language app ever.. This app has it all. The content consists of fun and interesting stories, with dictionary lookups for all words, and explanations of any tricky grammar or phrases. The stories have sentence by sentence narration by a native speaker. They can be shown with or without furigana. That alone would be great enough, but you can tap on any words you don’t know, and create flashcards, to review with a spaced repetition system. The flashcards can be reviewed in the app, or exported to anki, and show every sentence you’ve seen the word in. Really, this is language learning done as well as it can possibly be done, especially for Japanese. The only possible improvement they could make would be to add some manga to the mix, but that’s probably too much to ask…

The smoothest reading resource ever. This app is incredibly well developed to help you learn Japanese vocabulary as efficiently as possible while enjoying it. The mini dictionary for looking things up and the SRS is just 😘chef’s kiss! Will hopefully read all the stories they have for free (it’s… a lot) and then subscribe :)

Broken. Login, tries to sync data, fails, tells me to try again or sign out. Rebooted the device, checked my 4g signal, attempt to login 3+ hours after the first time and still broken.

Incredible. The absolute best app for studying Japanese in a way that not only feels natural, but fun! Highly recommend. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Just started, and I love it!. I was wondering if there was a graded reader app for Japanese, and I was so surprised to find out they’re only two. But having just started this one, I’m pretty sure that it’s everything I’m looking for. It has voice recordings, literal translation, translation notes, optional furigana, kana, or kanji—all of which are adjustable according to reading level. There’s also a feature that shows which articles you’ve started, and in-app spaced repetition flashcards that you can create as you’re reading so that it doesn’t detract from the reading experience. I don’t often R&R apps, but I was so surprised that an app this comprehensive has so few subscribers, and I wanted to do my part to get its name out. I’ll edit if any glaring problem pop up, but overall, I’m really looking forward to using this.

Needs a dark theme but great app for learning Japanese. I love this app. Please add a dark theme.

Perfect For bridging the gap between classroom and real life. This app is perfect if you just finished a Japanese class at school or a Duolingo course. I often found it hard to go straight into real life materials like anime or video games coming from a academic setting. But this app does a great job of getting you over that hump with lots of interesting materials that are all fully translated and annotated that you can go through over and over at your own pace and learn from.

Excellent app for learning Japanese. Highly recommended, truly the best

Fun way to build my Japanese language vocabulary. I’ve enjoyed using the articles as the catalyst for learning new vocabulary words. The flash card feature is well thought out and implemented in a way that ensures I’m spending my time on the words that need it the most. Also appreciate how responsive the developers have been to questions and feature requests.

One stop shopping!. The most comprehensive reading app around. It helps in so many ways on an even longer list of levels. Look no further.

Great Learning Tool. When you finish a formal language program, it can be hard to find the next step. Satori Reader does a great job of filling that gap. Pick a story that is close to your current level, and start learning new words and phrases in meaningful context that helps you remember them, and improve your reading and listening skills all at the same time! The built in flashcard system makes it a breeze to assimilate the new vocabulary.

Fun & Resourceful!. I have been (slowly) learning Japanese for a few years now. I have used a decent handful of learning resources, from popular learning apps to acclaimed textbooks. I’m currently stuck in that rut where most beginner-oriented learning medias are rather easy, but I don’t feel ready for the intermediate-oriented learning medias. I have used Satori Reader a while back, but had to discontinue abruptly. Now since I decided to return back to Satori Reader, I’m realizing how resourceful and entertaining it was. It helps me along word-by-word and the audio is wonderful! I enjoy reading, and learning in this format helps me push forward in beginning the intermediate-phase of Japanese. I don’t try to understand every single word and phrase in the stories provided in this app, but rather my main focus is to understand the overall context of each episode. This is the method that I used to transition into intermediate Spanish a few years ago and I’m giving it a try with Japanese. The discussions are also surprisingly resourceful in this app, and I like the feeling of being able to ask questions about grammar if I need to. There is a little bit of everything for learners of all levels in this app, but even then, one could browse through the more difficult titles and get a feel for what’s ahead. The audio practice is invaluable and will come in useful for anyone. Overall, I would highly recommend Satori Reader for anyone curious, or just browsing. The interface, while different at first, works well and I haven’t had any issues with the functionality of the app. Also, the vast amount of information in Satori Reader definitely makes the subscription worth it. This app deserves 10 stars!

Best resource for an intermediate learner. The intermediate plateau is a difficult stage of the learning process to cross, but Satori reader is the best resource I’ve found to help conquer it. Initially I was underwhelmed by the difficulty and length of the articles, feeling they were too simple compared to native media to be truly useful. I was wrong. Each article seems to contain at least one or two words I don’t know. They say the best way to learn is input of “x+1”, where x represents material you know and the +1 being new stuff, and Satori reader is perfect for this, at least at my level. Even when I’m not encountering new material, I still find it beneficial as I’ve noticed my reading speed improve dramatically as I become increasingly familiar and comfortable with reading. With native material, I rarely encounter a sentence without at least one unfamiliar word. Being able to read without constantly hitting these roadblocks allows you to focus on actually practicing reading instead of constantly consulting a dictionary. When you do come across an unknown word on Satori reader, you can just click it to instantly get a definition. You can also add it to a built-in SRS feature, and export the cards to Anki, which is a fantastic feature. If you’re not already using Anki or another SRS, you really should give it a try. Additionally, there are notes that explain various grammar points you encounter in the story. While unfortunately it’s rare to see grammar beyond an N3 level, I still find some of these notes enlightening. For example, one explained the significance of に following a verb in the negative -ず form, such as 食べずに。I originally learned the に was entirely optional and had no significant nuance. This note instead explained how the に turns the verb into an adverb which modifies the following verb, whereas without the に the negated verb is not modifying the following verb, and instead is just a sequence of events. It makes so much sense that it almost seems obvious, but other resources I’ve used neglect to elaborate on these sorts of nuances that I think are actually quite crucial. This is just one of many notes that deepened my understanding of things I thought I knew. There is a wide variety of stories at this point, so you’re pretty much guaranteed to find at least one that interests you. The ones I’ve read have been fairly entertaining. For what is primarily a language learning resource, I’d say they're surprisingly good. I rarely find an article that’s a slog to read, and even then the short size helps when I do. Each article also has voice recordings for every line, which is nice. I like to listen before reading as listening practice. This review is mostly for the service itself, but the app is fine. I prefer to read on my laptop, but it’s nice to have the option to read on my phone as well. Overall, I was really pleased with how much Satori Reader improved my reading ability. I can read so much faster now, and I’ve strengthened my vocabulary and grammar while doing so. If you’re also finding native material a bit too daunting at your current stage, I think Satori reader is a great choice to help bridge the gap.

Amazing for me. I have used this reader for over a year and I love it

From Beta to App!. I’ve been using Satori Reader since it was in its beta testing! I am so excited to now have it on my phone as an app. Each story has their own interest and level in Japanese. I love how they have put it together and applied kanji/vocabulary options to help with reading along. One of my favorite things to do is to listen to the story first, see if I can understand it. Then go through and read it part by part. Then lastly, listening to it again.

Priceless. This is absolutely outstanding. The content is enjoyable and the study features are very practical and user friendly. I wish I had this years ago. I completed a phd in East Asian studies in Illinois a few years ago and my Japanese has always struggled and lagged behind chinese. I’ve been looking for a platform like this because esoteric or super specialized reading (which I’ve done in research) just doesn’t always have the same enjoyment as “fun” learning. Thank you for making this and please keep going!

Well worth it!. I’ve been a subscriber for almost 2 years now, I think, and this app never loses its shine. It just keeps getting better with new stories, great writing, voice acting and just enough grammatical notes to help intermediate readers through some of the more challenging constructs. The difficulty seems perfectly dialed in to Intermediate Japanese learners who have so few resources for level appropriate reading material. I find that it’s always just above me - challenging but attainable. The stories are all gripping. They pull you in gradually and hook you before you realize it. The customer service is too notch as well. Brian Rak responds personally and thoroughly to all inquiries. The community discussions reflect how passionate people are about this app. New production is ongoing. It’s thrilling to see new episodes posted weekly. Great job by the entire production and development team!

Indispensable. TL:DR; The most important tool in my Japanese learning arsenal. When I say I’ve tried the majority of the existing apps to assist in learning Japanese, I’m probably *understating* how far I’ve gone to find the best tools available. That being said, I regard Satori Reader as the most important part of that tool belt, second only to native speakers. It is the tool I do not go a day without using. Trying to learn vocabulary? You have hundreds of stories to mine words from. Need to remember the vocabulary? Use the app’s built-in SRS flash cards, or easily export to your alternate favorite. Need to work on listening comprehension? There is accompanying audio for each of the episodes in a series, complete with ambient sound effects. “But grammar is my stumbling block, not vocabulary or listening,” you say? Well then dive into the grammar lessons included with the app, provided by the maker of Human Japanese, that concisely explain essential grammar points with accompanying example sentences. I have seen my confidence in Japanese skyrocket as I have made the usage of this app. The best use of money I have spent in language learning. Period.

Great. My only complaint was the navigation of the app was not very intuitive at first. But after some clicking around, I figured it out. This best feature is the flash cards pulled from the reading. I love this.

App crashes when playing the full audio for the article.. Quite disappointing since I use the phone app almost exclusively for the audio. Hope it's fixed soon. 3 stars because everything else about the app is fine

Amazing. This is absolutely amazing, but I wish there was an option to hide furigana on certain words.

Wonderful stories but the app takes forever to load on my laptop :(. I download this app a few days ago on my phone to practice my Japanese. This app has amazing stories, beautiful narrator voices, and detailed grammar notes. It also has other amazing features to help you study Japanese! I love it so much that I also wanted to download it on my laptop. However, I was disappointed a bit because the app takes forever to load on my laptop. I waited for hours and it never finishes loading. It freezes on Retrieving Content Manifest. I hope the app gets fix soon, so I can study Japanese on my laptop!

Japanese teacher shocked by how naturally I spoke. I started reading 壁の穴 and used the built in feature to mine for words. Found lots of words used every day in conversations, but would probably not be taught in a traditional class. The voiceovers are really good and the work / grammar explanations are amazing. The app has a built in SRS system to study words you mined, but it also lets you export to anki. I’m personally exporting and super grateful for the feature since it lets me integrate with words I find in other places. High quality stuff

Reading Speed Issue. This is truly an excellent app. Unfortunately, since the reading of the sentences is so fast, it takes three or four readings to understand the correct pronunciations. If there could be a control added to slow down and then increase the reading speed as the readers’ skill gradually improves, it would make the reading more useful to all levels of readers and improve the app greatly.

Great Japanese learning resource. The best App for Beginner to Advanced Intermediate Japanese learners I’ve found. My reading, listening and comprending has all improved thanks to this app. Great explanations of grammer, vocab and context makes it easy and quick to understand. Can’t rate this App high enough! Thank you

Great reading system. The interface for reading and tapping words and controlling kanji and furigana is really wonderful. Please keep the content coming. The real world stuff is especially useful for those of us living in Japan. Thanks

Worth every penny to subscribe. Though I use the app version as a supplement to the online reader, I am so grateful that they synchronize perfectly. Rarely has so much care and work been put into a language resource. (As a language teacher with 15 years experience, I mean it!) Take the time to do the full ‘tour’. The integrated study list/repeat practice flash cards are a useful bonus. It can be used by beginners and more advanced students, even a case like me with high level comprehension/spoken yet lower reading/kanji. Finally a resource that is adaptable from where I am, doesn’t force to redo things I already know. おおきに!

Highly recommended. This app has been helping me greatly to transition into light novels, and the stories are really engaging (with audio too!) Even as a long-time Anki user, I also find all the built-in review tools to be very useful, and a huge time-saver! Highly recommended!!

It’s just what I needed. Lots of good quality original reading content for lower-intermediate / intermediate readers. Fills a gap I haven’t found anywhere else. Favourite features are: (1) Furigana for each word is shown or hidden based on the specific kanji known by each user. This reinforces the kanji I’ve already learned without having to lookup the kanji I don’t already know. (2) Lots of helpful grammar and translation notations at the click of a button. (3) The team is incredibly responsive to customer questions and suggestions.

素晴らしい. The amount of thoughtfulness and care that is put into this app is astounding. It’s wonderful, thank you to the entire team.

One of my favourite learning tools. Satori reader is a perfect tool for tha

Great framework, needs better stories. Pros: custom settings for furigana display, audio version with good voice acting. Translations/definitions are available but unobtrusive. Good language acquisition tool. Cons: not enough stories to choose from, and unfortunately they are all boring. Nothing happens, it’s all background exposition or people reminiscing.

Incredible app to learn Japanese with. Concise and detailed explanations on many of the tricky grammar points and nuances.

Great resource. After taking quite a break in learning Japanese, I’m recent months I’ve been trying to get back into it. Took a couple courses in university, so probably around an N4 level at the time? I am finding this to be a fantastic motivator to improve more - the stories are actually REALLY engaging (Not usually the case with textbook dialogues) and the built in SRS is really helping me to build my vocabulary. It’s tough going at my level, I am running into MANY unfamiliar words per chapter. But the fact that I don’t have to pause to look up these words and make my own flash cards just makes it all feel so much more engaging. Plus they are great at using the words you’ve learned again in following chapters! I really feel that seeing the words in context is a big help for understanding and retention.

love it!. Already a big fan of Human Japanese, I am trilled with Satori Reader. LOVE the grammar series in this app, a terrific addition to my Japanese learning.

Great resource!. This is a fantastic resource to get you reading in Japanese. The explanations with the text are fantastic.

Works perfect for me. It feels like I just hired a Japanese teacher who sits right beside me and knows exactly what I need to be explained. Everything’s very well explained. It’s fantastic! When I’m driving, I kind of hope that I could listen to a series of episodes, but it seems that I can only listen to one episode at a time right now.

Great App to improve your reading. The stories are good, with clear grammar explanations. It’s far better than any other application.

Latest update improved significantly. 12/22/2020: Dev implemented dark mode, which makes reading much easier on the eyes (perhaps coincidental that a lack of a dark mode was my main complaint in my review about a week before the latest update). A big improvement. And syncing, when you open the app, appears to be a little faster. But to nitpick a bit: why can’t it sync in the background instead of forcing the user to wait 5 seconds before accessing the app? Seems like background syncing is commonplace enough to expect it from high-priced apps.

GREAT but not perfect.. I honestly have fallen in love with the app. It’s a great tool to Learn new vocabulary and pronunciation. There’s a few flaws but first I’ll go over the amazing resources first. There’s many interesting articles that will make people intrigued and quick to learn how the grammar system works in Japanese. There are MANY options on how you can learn and read. For example the kana/kanji change or slight kanji to native reading. But there’s no perfect app. It would have a greater effect on pronunciation and comprehension if the reader or listener could control the speed of the reading. It’s not a MUST have but a should have. Also new comers in learning Japanese would be completely confused on the mix up in word formation etc. so if there were some grammar notes or something along that line guiding the reader it would help a lot. The rating right now currently 4.6 is perfect for what the apps worth. Just add speed change, maybe some notes guiding you through, and maybe adding signs saying how preferences work in the beginning. Overall I actually enjoy the app. I was actually surprised because I thought this app would have 1000s of rating etc. it should get more attention because it’s a great app to learn. I will actually thing about getting the monthly Subscription and if these changes are made your gonna be getting a new subscription from me. I support this app all the way so please make some tiny changes. Overall I would’ve given a 4.6 but since I couldn’t I did 4 because it just wasn’t a 5. I LOVE satori reader and I’m excited for what’s to come. If I ever meet someone trying to learn Japanese I’ll tell them about this great app!

Love the app, but never as a subscription. Dear Brak Software, As a recent purchaser of both of your Human Japanese apps, I thought I’d be excited to try your Satori Reader app. And in fact, at first glance it looks really well done. So many good things to say about it. Challenging vocab for me, but great app design from top to bottom, not joking. Being able to listening to topical, near-full-speed, conversational, full sentences (repeatedly) with the ability to translate the individual words or phrases as needed is perfect. The notes describing usage patterns are really helpful as well. But there is one huge, overshadowing flaw. Whoever thought that it would be a good idea to go with the currently vogue concept of trying to get everyone to subscribe to services instead of just selling a quality product like HJ, well, they messed up. This is a great product that will never, ever, EVER get a dollar from me as it stands. Count me among the many people I know that avoid subscriptions like the plague. That said, a HJ model with a Lite app including limited articles and a full app that included several full series, I’d be happy to purchase. Perhaps this would even work as a small in-app charge for each new series of articles. Maybe. Depending on the price per series. I know plenty people who will drop a few bucks for an app, and then a buck or two more on occasion as time goes by for new features/worlds/puzzles/etc., but far fewer who are ready to buy into an ongoing every-month service. I wouldn’t bother to write up feedback if I didn’t care, but this is such a well crafted app that I really would like to be able to contribute to its creation and upkeep. But never as a subscription, sorry. Hard to rate. I guess 5 for the app and 1 for the sales model averages to 3. I hope to be able to increase the rating at some point.

Reasons I Love Satori Reader. I have been stuck at the Intermediate Japanese level for a long time. It was always very frustrating to try to read Japanese, even in textbooks that were at my level, and just not really understand things completely. I always felt like I was understanding only about 70%. And that's after learning the vocabulary and studying the various grammatical explanations in the book. I love Satori Reader. It is absolutely my favorite tool for studying Japanese. First of all, Satori Reader is arranged beautifully. Everything you need is available with just a click, right there in the passage you are reading. This includes the definitions of words, detailed grammar and usage notes, voice recordings for listening practice, and sentence-by-sentence translations. In addition, Satori Reader makes it super easy for you to create study "cards" for new words that go into a spaced repetition program for review. Each sentence is translated very carefully and literally, and there are very detailed explanations of the grammar. In this way, you don't just understand the meaning, but you can also see precisely how the Japanese sentence construction results in that meaning. Now I can read confidently, knowing I will understand the passage accurately and completely and that I am also constantly improving my reading and listening skills. Furthermore, the stories are interesting! I often find myself reading faster and longer because I want to find out what happens next in the story. And isn't that the point, after all, to read for understanding and enjoyment?

All around good.. This app not only helps me with my reading, but also with my listening and pronunciation. It’s a great app to add to your arsenal of study guides and can also be linked to your WaniKani account, so that every time you learn a new kanji it updates and hides the furigana for that particular kanji forcing you to remember the word/reading from memory. If you forget, don’t fret, just click on the word/kanji and the reading and definition pops up.There’s so many more features to this app than I have room to write, but if you’re looking for an app that will improve your Japanese, than I say use this.
