What is genki vocab for 3rd ed. app? Learn elementary Japanese words at your own pace!
GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. is an app that enables users to learn more than 1,200 words essential for beginners.

This is the official iPhone app for the 3rd edition of GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 3.5 million copies sold worldwide.

Advantages
◆Users can view the words and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.
◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.
◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the study set, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.
*This app will not play audio if your device is in Silent mode (Vibrate mode). To hear the audio, please turn Silent mode off.

Study methods and functions
This app has three main modes: Study, Check, and List.

◇ "Study" allows users to view the words, their meanings, and the example sentences over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・Audio recordings of all words and example sentences are provided with natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese.
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Users can bookmark the words they like. The bookmarked words are compiled in the Bookmark list in "List."

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・The words already mastered are taken out of the study set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order. The words bookmarked in the Study mode are also listed in the Bookmark list.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The Study view of words can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.

○This app is based on the vocabulary from the third edition of GENKI.

GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. Comments & Reviews 2026

Sound Works - Take Out of Silent Mode. I had the same issue of the sound not working with the Genki vocabulary app until I read a review that said in order for the audio to work, your phone cannot be in Silent Mode. I turned off silent mode and the playback audio totally worked! Same for the Genki Kanji app as well. Just make sure silent mode is turned off.

No sound. Audio doesn’t work

Genki needs to fix the audio so it actually works. It’s uber frustrating to pay for an app and have basically half of its function not even work. Especially when you’re trying to learn how to speak a language. :/ I need to not just see and read Japanese I need to hear it so I can practice. Also, the textbook has places I’m supposed to listen to audio from the app. Again. Not helpful. Just fix it please

Good but could be better. That app needs animations for kanji to show the correct stroke order.

No sound. There’s no sound. I just paid for all three. I want a refund

No sound. This new version has no sound which defeats the purpose of hearing back the word and learning can this be fixed PLEASE???

The audio doesn’t work. It could be a good and useful app if the audio worked. Please fix this!!

Sound not working. Please fix the sound issue for IPhone 🥲 I would love to use the app

2nd edition is much better. In the “updated” app for the 3rd edition textbook they removed the best feature of this app, which is for every flashcard, they also had the vocab word placed in a sentence, which was a terrific tool for listening comprehension and understanding grammar. Even if you are using the 3rd edition, I’d suggest buying the vocab app for the 2nd edition. A few words have changed, but that extra feature makes all the difference in the world.

Helpful and easy to use. This app is very helpful for studying along with the text book, and I have my flash cards wherever I go. I use an iPhone 11 and haven’t had any issues with the sound so far.

Not really an app. Just a list of words with barely any functions. No real testing or learning ability. Try Quizlet or something else

Audio doesn’t work. Audio doesn’t work

Sounds broken. Really wish I could use this app as a companion to the book, but it’s broken.

Worth it. This has increased my learning speed dramatically. I take an online class at college but use this app to memorize vocabulary before lessons. Now I can actually focus in class because I’m not lost and wasting time looking up words in the textbook. Also, it’s easy for me to know which words I struggle with and then I can practice those words more efficiently.

Crashed. I took a risk despite the low review average and bought this app. There’s no spaced repetition, and when I got past about six or seven cards the app just crashed. It worked the second time I launched it but I don’t like that we only either have sound on when cards appear or off. Why can’t we tap to play the sound? If we could do that we could repeat it and practice our pronunciation, and we could test ourselves by saying it before we hear the audio. I already own Anki and have a couple of N5 decks, plus my own custom deck. I still wanted to try the Genki app because I thought it would be good since it aligns with the book’s lessons, but everyone would probably be better off just finding Genki vocabulary decks for Anki.

Great Product (Audio Works…atm). Good app, nice to have the official audio and graphics, but you can get the same from a community Anki deck. Not worth the $6 price tag if you have access to Anki.

Initial audio issues ( but it is fixable !). Been experiencing the same audio issues as others have mentioned. Once fixed, the app is exactly as you’d expect it to be. TO FIX AUDIO: 1) make sure your mute button on the left of your phone is turned off so the phone is not silenced. 2) if this doesn’t solve, people recommend closing all apps. The first step solved it for me, I am really happy this was able to be resolved.

I wish it’s better. It’s a good study tool when textbook is not being around, but I would expect more as an app with additional cost. 1. Aggregated list of all the sentences given in this app for practice the vocabulary in listening. 2. Store the study process from the last session. 3. A better way to check, other than the self-answering on whether feeling confident about the vocabulary.

Barely usable. I love the idea and content of the app, but unfortunately it is not well maintained. It’s broken in different ways on my iPhone and iPad.

Good Vocab Practice. I gave it a 4 because it took me forever to figure out how the audio worked. Make sure you are on Ringer Mode. If your phone is on silent the audio does not work. Other than that it helps with practicing basic Vocab.

No Sound. Using this app on an iPhone 8 for supplemental studying for my 日本語 class. Cool idea if the sound worked. Update: found a reviewer that mentioned that your silence button has to be off for the sound to work. Now that the sound works, it’s a great app.

Missing feature. No sentence for each word. They have the flash card feature in the Android app, but not in iOS.

Please fix the sound!!!!. The sound doesn’t work at all

Audio playback doesn’t work. Anybody else experiencing this? So i had the 2nd edition which is free and suddenly the audio playback wasn’t working. I thought maybe if I upgraded to the paid version it might work. But it’s still not working. It is really frustrating. Can you please look into it?

Additional vocabulary missing. I gave it four stars because the additional vocabulary is missing (or I can’t find it).

Sound doesn’t work??. The sound hasn’t worked from the get go, not sure what’s going on. Tried uninstalling and a few other methods, nothing.

Not worth the price. Unless you care about the audio, this app isnt worth $6 when quizlet is free and has more features.

The audio just stoped working. There is another review with the same issue! :(

Sound does not work. Sound never worked.

No Sound. How am I supposed to learn how to say the words if I can’t hear it?

Broken. This app should be free because it is early beta quality. Apple used to not allow such broken apps to be sold. Fix the audio and include spaced repetition. Get it together. What a joke.

Better than making your own Anki. This is app is good for what it does: a way for you to save time from making your own Anki or flash cards. Because honestly - if you made your own Anki, it’ll be the same vocab. This app at least saves you time from making the vocab that’s already on here. So if you save time studying or making an Anki deck without vocabs from here.

Terrible Value. This app is so bare bones that it should be free… especially if you bought their text book. I’m just gonna use Anki

Problems with sound. Great app, should be 5 stars — but the sound function (crucial for me) only works sometimes. Sound cuts out, and restarting or redownloading app makes no difference. Then sound might reappear for awhile…then go away. If this bug was fixed — 5 stars ! UPDATE: the sound works, as long as you keep the phone’s “silent mode” button OFF. This is not intuitive, and should be made clear in the app…!!!

Buggy and in some cases incorrect. Sometimes the sound doesn't work, which is annoying. Worse, I've seen some words where the pronunciation is completely wrong, which is terrible for a student trying to learn.

Too many malicious bugs. If I'm memorizing words and there's no sound when I click on a word, what's the point of buying this app? I don't recommend it at all. The business doesn't care and doesn't fix the bugs.

Audio stopped working. I have the paid 3rd edition and the audio stopped working as well. Use on an iPhone 11. Perhaps due to an iOS update? Running version 14.3

One this Missing for me. The only thing missing to me is a spaced repetition function. It be easier to keep track of the things I need to study again.

New Update Is Buggy (FIXED). UPDATE: App no longer crashes when attempting to do Study or Check. Can no longer complete studies and checks as reaching the final card/word crashes the entire app.

glitches. has a lot of glitches that make it hard to navigate the app

It is worth it overall.. When I say it is worth it, I mean the app itself. It is much better than writing thousands of flashcards either from making them or the purchase of them (the paper and time to write the flash cards with minimal mistake.) in the long run, it is alright. I left out one star out of the five because of the price. It is too expensive. Some other reviews mentioned that this app should be free - especially with the purchase of the book. I agree to some degree. But if there has to be a price, I still don’t think it should be that expensive. Comparing to other reviews I’ve seen, at least some of the additional vocabulary IS in the flashcards. It’s just that the flashcards for each set is what should be known for that lesson. The additional vocab is for one, additional, but just not required YET. What I mean is, at least some of that earlier additional vocab is indeed covered in this Genki app, just in a later set. There is also sound, example sentences, and the cards are scrambled nicely every time. I like it.

Buggy. App is currently bugged to where if you swipe down to see the example sentence, majority of the time it kicks back to the vocab word.

Yes there are sentence examples and sound. Just a note—Some of the reviews state the app (3rd addition) no longer has sentence examples, but it still does. You just have to click the caret (upward arrow) at the bottom of each study card to switch to the full sentence. The examples are shown in English & Japanese with Japanese audio for the whole sentence.

Badly made. I bought this app despite the low review because I’m studying with GENKI books. I thought it would be a good edition. I tried to use it but there is no sound at all (everywhere else there is, and sound is “On” in the app. I tried to reinstall and then it doesn’t work at all. It’s a waist of money.

Sound not working. Paid for the app and it was pretty expensive and the sounds not working

No ability to Review. After you mark a word as “known” you have no ability to review it as a flashcard. You can only browse to it from a long list of all words… meaning you can’t practice and you’ll forget older lessons… the app is also a big buggy. Should honestly be a free app included with the books. Do yourself a favor and get Anki instead of this.

Sound is tied to Silent Mode. I thought I was having the audio issues others mentioned. I found the sound in the app is actually tied to the phone’s silent mode for some reason. So if you can’t hear any audio try turning your phone off silent.

Doesn't Work. Great app on the phone but doesn't work at all on desktop. Doesn't show words when using flashcards and titles etc are all messed up all over the app.

Sound used to work. Sound no longer works. Otherwise, a good app to try to not forget everything. I don’t think it’s over priced but wish someone would fix the sound. The ui also gone weird. Difficult to see other side of cards. Used to swipe up, but now it takes more care or it immediately flips back.

Sound doesn’t work. Bought the app and the sound function doesn’t work at all…

Good but pricey. Very useful app for remembering your grammar if your using the Genki textbook. Sound works for me just fine on iPhone 11. My only minor complaint really is that it’s a bit pricey.

No sound. Just bought at full price and none of the sound features work, I want a refund

Sound does not work. Just downloaded - nothing I do will make the sound work. Disappointing!

Audio works if you have your phone not on silent. So, I’ve figured out that if you want the app audio to work, you need to have your phone not on silent. I quiet like it that way, just different compared to what I will expect from other different apps.

Sound is not working. I can’t hear anything

The sound function doesn’t work. I paid full price for this app and the speaker function doesn’t work at all

Sound does not work. When playing the sound of a word, it does not work

Basic but perfect if you’re using the (excellent) genki books. This app is really basic but I love that it’s got all of the genki vocab and nothing else. If you’re using the genki books this app is worth the money for the simplicity and accuracy.

Crashes at end of every lesson. It seems like I useful app but it crashes every time I get to the last item in the lesson.

SRS would be very, very useful. A good flash card app, charming drawings and good audio, however I think that SRS systems would make using the app easier and more enjoyable overall.

Stopped Working. App has stopped working as of iOS 17 for me. Issues with audio, cut off text and flash cards auto flipping back when you try to see the sentence on the other side. Was a great companion app but can no longer recommend. Do not get if on iOS 17.

2nd editions apps work better. Text cuts off when you flip to the example screen and the app is glitchy at best. Content is good but the app is frustrating to use in comparison the the 2nd edition.

Edition 3 finally. Looking forward to the remaining apps to hit Edition 3. Had to wait almost a year for the second volume, and now Spring 2021+ for the apps is disappointing. However I suppose the wait is worth it.

Faulty. Audio doesn’t work

Audio doesn’t work. Would be much more useful if it did.

Sound does not work. Even after checking and modifying settings the sound does not work in the app

Audio doesn’t work. It would be a great app if the audio worked. Unfortunately it doesn’t so it’s not helpful for pronunciation.
