Allegory App Description & Overview

What is allegory app? Allegory is a powerful notes app with a beautiful iOS-centric UI. The minimal and focused writing experience, combined with an impressive set of powerful features, makes this the ideal choice for everyone. Allegory removes the complexity of most markdown editors, presenting a minimal UI that’s welcoming for casual writers and note-takers as well as more attuned authors, making it a great app for you to pick up regardless of your background and skill level.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE ALLEGORY:

Allegory immediately launches to the clean and simple note editor screen, boosting your productivity and reducing friction between wanting to write down what you’ve just thought of, and actually getting it written down. Support for valid markdown as well as custom markdown makes it easier to create your best work.

Allegory also includes a brilliant hand-crafted drawing area which lets you select from a variety of colors, long-holding on any of the tools brings them into focus with sliders to adjust their opacity and stroke size with gorgeous animations that strike awe.

You can bookmark and set due dates on any note from anywhere in the app regardless of where you are, which makes performing essential actions entirely seamless, further reducing friction for users. Seamless iCloud sync adds upon the notion of keeping your notes exactly where they need to be. Notes can be searched for within the app in ways that make sense to you, by words and dates, or by using language that comes naturally such as ‘today’, ‘yesterday’, and ‘last week’. A summary of your current note also provides further context on your writing by displaying character/word/line/paragraph counts, sentiment analysis to portray how positive or negative your writing is, quick links to open the specific note, and more.

Inspiration can strike anywhere, and that is why Allegory supports custom action extensions that allow creating notes and putting down ideas from other apps. You can also use Siri to do the same. Scan documents and text to convert it to notes, or add images within notes to provide more context. When you want to share your work with the world, use one of the many export options to create files that work best for you, from TXT and MD, to HTML and PDF. Or simply export as an image or plain text. It's built in ways that make sense to your workflow.

Tweak and adjust the app to make it look and behave the way that you want. From app icons and tints, to markdown settings and haptics, there's a settings option to make the app your own. URL schemes and Siri shortcuts allow you to perform useful actions in Allegory from anywhere. Allegory is available on your iPhone, your iPad, and your Apple Watch, and supports seamless iCloud sync to share notes without lifting a finger.

All the power of iOS is in your hands with Allegory. It is fully integrated with the latest technologies such as Dark Mode, a standalone Apple Watch app, Siri, Today Widget, Quick Actions, Action Extension, Context Menus, iCloud sync, Notifications, document scanning, biometric locks, custom haptics, Pencil support, keyboard shortcuts, URL schemes, custom app icons, iMessage stickers, fully accessible, and more.

Allegory Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Looks gorgeous but impossible to use. Completely bug-ridden. I wish it actually worked cause its organization and appearance are lovely. But crashes immediately after opening, doesn't delete things I tell it to delete, and is just too much of a mess to be functional. I hope the devs fix this because I'd really like to try it. As it is now, it's useless, don't bother.

Beautiful Disaster. This app is beautifully designed but lacks basic usability and has major flaws. When adding multiple notes in the latest version, old notes get replaced with the new text, creating duplicates and/or completely erasing old notes. I would hope my notes would be retained and not deleted when creating a new one. Secondly, formatting notes as to-do lists needs a major overhaul. It is buried in the “hold” menu three lines in. When selecting multiple lines it creates one large “to-do” line. When selecting each individual line it has unpredictable, nonsensical behavior. I have yet to dive deeper into any other issues as I can no longer use this app in its current state.

App wont launch on new MBP Pro Monterey. App wont launch on new MBP Pro Monterey after downloading and launching (deleting and repeating multiple times).

so cool. didn’t save an hour of writing but wouldn’t actually delete a one word note super cool thanks

Not a Mac App. Mac apps expose their functionality clearly and readily. They make great use of the screen and the platform. It's clear that this is essentially a port of the iOS app with little to no change. I realize catalyst apps are hard to get right. But a toolbar or control window, or *something* at the very least would help. This is a wonderful, beautiful app and it has so much potential.

Opened Terminal then crashed on M1. This should be flagged as unusable on M1 macs.

Constant crashing and sync issues. The description is amusing, claiming a "macOS-centric UI" as built-in notes tell you to swipe left/right on notes despite (seemingly) not being able to do so on macOS. That doesn't bother me THAT much, however the app crashed 4-5 times before I could access the settings. Once I got past that, I ended up with two instances of a folder called "iChat" that were always both selected at the same time despite being able to click and drag either independently. Additionally, I couldn't delete the built-in notes. Despite deleting them all, every time I'd click a folder they'd reappear. With no confidence that I'll be able to access the app and no confidence that content will either sync or even exist once I stop actively looking at it, this app is a complete non-starter.

Love this app!. I mainly use the iPhone stock notes app cause I’ve been using that forever and old habits die hard. But this app is a great second option! I can tell the developer put a lot of effort and love into making this. 💜

Interesting. I really hope the developer continues to tweak this app because it definitely has a LOT of potential. Like others have said, it can be a bit sluggish at times but the design gives me options I didn't realize I wanted. Don’t you quit on this app sir or ma’am.

Does not run on Mac M1. The app looks good but after downloading it will not run. It crashes as soon as I launch it. I’m on an M1 Mac and the app has not been updated in over a year so this is probably why. I don’t think the app will be update anytime soon if at all. Unfortunate for what seemes like a nice looking program.

Sad. Really unsettling when you stay up all night noting content ideas for work and they get deleted once you wake up. Either open source this so we can fix the code or remove it from the App Store. Love the UI. But really disappointed with the code.

Story. Allegory

D.O.A.. Latest in series of visually excellent, substantively poor apps by this developer. Like the rest, this will never be updated. Pity, considering how thoughtful the visual design is.

Deleted ALL of my notes. I had at least 20 notes and everything was deleted after updating the app.

Deleted. All of my notes disappeared!! I had not used the app for about 4 days, when I opened the app & couldn’t find anything that I previously written I knew something was wrong.

Still needs work. The app does have potential. The UI is interesting and I like where it is going, but the app has already crashed a few times on me and I can't figure out how to delete the notes I make. I dont get the option to do so when I "two-finger tap" on the notes stack. I would also like for there to be a list view or a way to find certain notes easier without having to flip through each card.

Hey, buddy. Can we get someone to help my guy with this app - honestly it’s so clean, i try to use it everyday lol but nope you literally can’t use the app. I know someone can help , please!!!

Notes Lost. Was utilizing this as a note-taking application. Lost a weeks worth of notes to this app with no method to retrieve. Saved them and everything. Extremely dissappointed.

Apps constantly crashing. App crashes every 30 seconds. Can’t write on it. iOS

So amazing. Simple, beautiful, flexible It's just a nice app. 👌🏻

Hasn't been updated for M-series chips. Don't buy this if you have an M-series chip Mac. It simply won't even launch. The developers have abandoned their product, which is a pity as I used to love this note taking app. It also doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't make it optimised for the M-series or native, because they've lost out on a lot of business, provided prospective buyers are reading these reviews. Their overall review score would be a lot higher if they made the effort to make this app M-series friendly, and they'd make more money. But not everyone has business sense I guess. Maybe they're too busy developing something else... like a crack addiction.

🤨 3 gigabytes?. Then app has a lot of potential but there’s something wrong. I loaded the app and started to try out different features. When I added a photo and then a drawing to a new note, things got really REALLY slow. I looked in Settings to see how much space was being used up by Allegory and it said over 3 GIGABYTES of data. This for a fresh install where I added literally one or two new notes to test the app. Something is not right ...hopefully it gets fixed so I can try it out. Again, I think there’s potential here for a great app.

A lot of potential. Beautifully designed. Gorgeous animations. Bug: the cycling through top-left stacks is prone to freezing. Suggestions: going from note editing view to note viewing mode could have more space on the side for gesture recognition: right now it only works from the middle section and there's no boundary. Also, handwriting results are quite bad

Not ready fonor produciton.. Unfortunately, what does like look like a great UI has been released to early into production. Whomever is resposible for the development of this applicationn should have tested it a bit more before actually launching it. The app dont work. It's full of bugs, crashing like crazy, wont open; and i haven't even taken a look at the codebase yet or whatever logs it had produced. i simply got rid of everything cuz; in all honesty: this is apple jobs. They don't pay be to download and debug other people's apps. (And from what i gather, submittinng an app to the appstore literally means that someone will test it out before simply making it availble >>> its sh** like this that keeps me up at night and makes me weary of donwloading whatever GUI macguyver-like type solution some dude came up with. )

Simply the easiest and feature rich for a note app. I just want to say is that I’ve been using this app since the beta, the developer has captured a whole new way of taking notes with this new approach, it has all the features you would want in a note taking app, it’s a must have!!

Several issues. I have experienced the following: app crashes, notes won’t delete, notes won’t show in dashboard, duplicate folders clogging up my iCloud

Could be great, if it would actually launch. I'll never know if this was what I was looking for in a notes taking app or not, because it immediately crashes upon launch.

Doesn’t save notes.. This app is so pretty and utilizes SwiftUI really well. However, it is bug-ridden. It deletes my notes and crashes very often. I almost want to remake this app myself seeing how much potential it has. I wish the developer would update it.

Unable to Search Multiple Notes. I tested the app to see if it could find a keyword that appears in at least one note. It failed the test. Additionally, I think the UI is confusing. Disappointment summarizes this app.

Every new iteration is buggier. I am sick of having this app crash and take my grocery list with it while I’m in the store. I am deleting. Good idea executed poorly. Total garbage.

App crashed an writing disappeared. Awful first impression. I downloaded the app and began to write. had a page filled and the app crashed on me and deleted everything I wrote as well as the folder I had created! Beautiful interface but what an awful UX experience. Deleting app immediately.

This App is a Lie. Nothing saves, and it crashes constantly. 0/10, do not recommend.

Lovely app!. This so visually appealing and the features are great. I have loved Bear for years, but have switched to Allegory. It does have a few bugs, but apparently the developer never sleeps because when I have emailed for support I have received help immediately! That says a lot about a developer‘s commitment to an app and those who use it!

Performance issues. This app has a top tier design, with great attention to detail. However, it’s very slow when adding pictures to notes. So slow that the app refused to open after I closed it mid note. Running on an iPhone X and I never had any problems like this before.

Horribly Slow. Way too slow when I add a picture and write a note below it. It doesn’t finish writing what I type until a minute later and I’m on an iPhone 11. The speed is unacceptable for a subscription based app like this.

good idea — not there yet. as most reviews say, the idea is great, but there are many bugs and flaws that would need to be worked out for the app to be useable including the most basic function of being able to save notes you've created

Quits as soon a try to go to preferences.. I dont have the patience now a days for this. It does look nice before it crashes.

Crashes on M1. Can't even open it to look at it on my M1 MBA. No updates in 7 months - abandonware?

Wouldn't stay open long enough to test it. Repeated crashes prevented me from even working with this long enough to understand the layout and design of the app.

Unusable and Bad. I can appreciate the work that went into the design and user experience of this app, it’s quite masterfully thought out. However, the development and reliability of this app is lacking. The app crashes frequently, notes disappear and are gone forever. For a note taking app, those events are simply unforgivable. Until these items are addressed, Allegory will serve as another example of an app that proves that success requires both thoughtful design and proper software development. All beauty and no substance just doesn’t cut it.

Not ready yet.... Not ready for the price.. The app has potential but it is not ready for prime time and certainly not ready for the price tag.. The issues have issues ... Lower the price to .99 and continue improving..

Pretty but that’s all. Where is the watch app that is suppose to be included? No syncing.

Promising, but poorly executed. The premise of a clean, iOS centric note interface that just writes words without any bells and whistles seems nice but the app needs improvement. I can’t figure out how to delete folders, there’s strange gaps between them, and glitched duplicates are created often. Notes are spontaneously deleted and you can export as a txt file without paying. Allegory is just a small side project by an app developer jumping from project to project that requires more attention.

Completely unreliable. Looks so promising but little works as it should.

Fantastic. I'm genuinely not sure what the other apps are complaining about. It's genuinely beautiful, and kinda exactly what I was looking for in a note taking/writing app. I really love it. Thank you! I really thoroughly enjoy this app and it compels me to write more on my phone. I have bear as well, but I've found it ugly. I know aesthetic isn't everything but for someone who cares it makes a difference.

A few issues. Hmmm, I have encountered a few serious problems. 1. Since subscribing, the app no longer syncs between my iPhone and iPad. 2. The last update wiped all my notes!! Hopefully these are just teething problems but I’m disappointed they weren’t ironed out during Beta testing. ===[Previous Review]=== I’ve literally had this app for an hour and I’m impressed so far—and I’m only using the free version. I’m looking for a replacement for Evernote or Agenda (I have a love-hate relationship with Agenda as the developers don’t seem to care about people with any kind of visual disability). Allegory is off to a good start. I love the “Today” view and the way they do the search. My biggest gripe is the use of markdown and not just RTF. That’s a personal thing, though. I don’t see the point of having unnecessary characters displayed in a writing app. If I was writing code, OK. But I’m not. Evernote, Scrivener, and even Matcha (just to name a few) display RT, so it’s possible. Perhaps allow the option to use markdown or RTF. Either way, I’ll subscribe to the Pro version for a month or two and see how things develop.

Not that good. I wish the app showed a quick tutorial instead of a long written instructions. Also the app itself looks good but doesn’t cut ion well, what annoys me is random folders keep adding on like “school work” then somehow another folder is made automatically saying “schoolwork20%” which I have no idea what it means. My notes also randomly disappear which is really annoying I was going to use this for school but not anymore

Completely useless app. I tried using this app but every time I put a note in there it disappears. Using the app is not straightforward, it’s very difficult to navigate, folders where i save a lot of notes turn up empty when i reopen the app and folders I delete pop back up too. Some serious bugs with this.

Inutilisable ☹️. Ça plante, les raccourcis claviers ne fonctionne pas, le menu de notes est étrange est non-intuitif. L'app a l'air belle mais elle n'est pas fonctionnelle. C'est dommage.

UNFRIENDLY UX. Nope, try again. This time focus on the UX rather than the UI (A-) because the UX (C-) should be A LOT more efficient in terms navigation & function than it is right now.

doesnt work well. cant delete folders everything else doesnt delete well either crashes\corrupts files often nice layout wierd when highlight italicize etc

Poor performance. This application looks amazing but there are many bugs this is y second time purchasing it after getting a refund the first time. Why is this application so expensive and it doesn’t even work properly and the dev does nothing to fix the bugs. Looks like I’m going to get another refund.

Beautiful but.... I’m still having problems saving what I have typed. Try to delete the examples from the “notes” folder and they reappear. Nothing gets saved or if it does it gets saved as an empty file. Has huge potential but isn’t ready yet!

Beautiful, but convoluted.. I love the way the app looks, and in the beginning it was a pleasure to use. Now that I’ve had the chance to use it. I have a few issues. First off, what is up with deleting things? It seems like no matter which way you try, your notes do not disappear. If they do it’s random after dozens of attempts. Also this is more a personal preference but I find it’s confusing to use and things are laid out in odd ways that lead to a convoluted experience.

Allegory. Useless.

Pretty but not ready for work. I was impressed by the layout and design touches. But start typing and the app crashes after a few paragraphs, on my up to date iPhone 11 Pro. I would rather have a utilitarian app with rock solid performance than a nice looking one I can’t rely on.
