Focos Comments & Reviews 2026
Pictures look professional. Love this app. I find myself going to this more than any other app now. Easily give that portrait style to photos. Tweak the bokeh with multiple choices or create your own. The lighting features can really add some depth and other tools like soft glow and tilt shift give another layer of character to your photo. You can view your picture in 2D, 3D or AR, which is pretty cool. You can do a lot to your photos for free. The only thing I don’t like is that if you have two objects, like people, in the photo, it only keeps one section in total clear focus. There may be a way to manipulate that, because there is a tool bar with shapes, but I haven’t figured that out yet. Otherwise, a very good app! I’d definitely recommend it.
Great App for the “Bokeh” Effect. I had a iPhone 7 Plus and a Google Pixel 3 that had the hardware and software to take Bokeh effect pictures naturally. Well I wanted an iPhone 8. Not the 8 Plus because I wanted something smaller for my hands. The iPhone 8 doesn’t have the additional camera that it needs to take Bokeh pictures like the 7 and 8 Pluses have. It certainly doesn’t have the amazing software that the Google Pixel 3 has where it’s able to take Bokeh pictures with its ONE CAMERA! So I did the next best natural thing and searched online for any apps that can take Bokeh like pictures. Google recommended me this app! It certainly does take great Bokeh pictures, AND it also modified some of the past pictures you took that’s already in your gallery. So it makes those pictures have the Bokeh/Blur effect too! It’s wonderful and beautiful really! I am really pleased with this app. It also will either make a copy of the blurred/bokeh picture and you can keep your original unsalted photo, or it offers to overwrite/modify your original picture to make it seem like you originally took a picture with a Bokeh effect! It’s wonderfully and a Godsend for the iPhones who don’t have the portrait lenses! Like the 5s and above! 😍🤩
Costs over $200 a year to use this app. This used to be my all time favorite ever since portrait mode was brought to the masses. This app enabled it on all iPhones. The original app developer used to provide personal updates and even called out Apple for copying his work. There used to be small purchases to enable features and support the developer or even a larger purchase for lifetime access. Because the quality and features and personal updates to the users was consistent I didn’t mind providing financial support. Now I think the developer sold to another bigger company and switched to a subscription model which completely disables any functionality, even for previous customers who’ve paid for access, unless you subscribe to the $3.99 a week service model. This equates to over $200 a year. Considering portrait mode is available on most recent iPhones and many other apps offer similar functionality for much less if not free it’s unfortunate on the direction this app has taken. I’ll be deleting this app and using other apps moving forward.
Great app, a little resource intensive?. Great app. Great features, I really like it. It’s got quirks. Perhaps the biggest thing for me is it slows down and eats up the battery life of my Xs Max. Seems odd to do that, but a lot is going on, I suppose. My battery health is excellent still, too. Another big thing (and maybe it’s just me missing something) is that there seems to be no way to automatically overwrite my regular photos with what Focos is doing; it asks me to modify the photo every single time. It gets exhausting. And there’s no way to share them easily from the edit panel—but it’s the edited photo that I want to share…And lastly, I wish I could mass-select and export them all at once, as edited photos. If there’s features are tucked away somewhere or I have to do something to enable them (I bought the pro version), then I’ll change my review. Honestly a great app, I just wish my phone was better at calculating the depth maps like the SE 2020 is. The 2020 SE looks nearly like glass.
All free functionality removed. This has to be one of the sleaziest developers I’ve ever seen. Did you buy the app back in the day? Too bad, they push updates anyway that remove all free functionality. Over the past year or two they’ve been gradually stripping functionality away from the free version, and now there’s zero functionality left. If you try to anything, it pops up the intrusive purchase advertisement. Before, you could dismiss it and use the app’s very limited functionality, but now that’s no longer an option. This is not at all a free app and should be removed from the App Store for being falsely listed. Oh, and even if you’re a paying customer from back in the era before they forced a $208/yr subscription model, the company won’t return your support request emails.
Great app, one sep left. I love this, the AI is amazing and only misses proportions of objects which usually isn’t a problem. I am a complete fool, while using it now I found the undo/redo buttons. Would like them to be out of the menu for people used to that, I think there is enough space. I would like if when you exit instead of hitting the check it doesn’t save it/ undo every edit, just common editing app features. Would be cool if you could take multiple shots for one angle to help the AI too! Still rating it full stars!
Return of the 2x focal length on iPhone 13 Pro. I've had this app for a long time and have used it minimally here and there. Now since the iPhone 13 Pro models don't have the 2x focal length for Portrait mode it's been a hassle to use. The new 3x lens just seems to be way too close and doesn't give enough room to time the shot. I know it will have better results in other situations but my subjects tend to not stay still for more then a second. Now my new workaround is to capture a non Portrait mode image with the camera at the 2x length (a crop or so). I put that image into Focos and add the blur and it's perfect!
Features stripped. Before my mom passed, I used this app on my iPad to edit some photos for her. I went in and used the brush feature with my Apple Pencil to get the depth effects exactly right and the photos turned out amazing. Fast forward to yesterday when I opened the app to edit some portraits I had taken for someone at work, I didn’t bring the lens I needed for shallow depth of field so I remembered this app and figured I’d go in and add it manually with my pencil, only to discover that that’s no longer an option. Every feature is now on sliders and I have no manual control. I still have this level of control on my phone, but Pencil doesn’t work on phones and using my finger is incredibly slow and tedious. I used to love this app and recommend it to everyone, even fellow photographers but now I can’t in good conscience tell people to use it because sliders just don’t cut it.
MAGNIFICENT 👏🏼. Right off the bat I can say I’m really enjoying this app. In a very long search of an app that has amazing quality blurring background effects I have come across many that just didn’t fulfill what I wanted until I came across this one. Not only do they have gorgeous effects, they have many options for everyone who is looking for a blurring background editing app that gives a truly professional appearance. Very easy to use as well. My photos look amazing and high definition which is why I love it so much! Just like most you’ll get the best effects with the pro version but I must say “ TOTALLY WORTH IT!!” You will not be disappointed that I can guarantee!
I will alwaaaays love this app. Super easy to use, portrait mode for older glow boxes, and most importantly free to use. There are some locked items, but it’s not a lot!! Thanks Focos ❤️❤️❤️😘😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (that part was generic, but I like totally agree 110% with that) See, I looooooooooooove loooove love photography. I absolutely love photography (incase you didn’t get that) and I lost my phone sooo I had to photographer on my iPad, which was hard. The camera was reaaal crappy (excuse my language) so I got this and it’s just the best, it’s Literally even better than my old camera. Then, my grandpa of all people got me another phone/iPad and I’m downloading it on all of them. Thanks so much focus
Maybe my first review ever?. I’ve been buying apps since 2009 and never felt compelled to write one. I’ve been using Focos for about 10 months now and it’s simply the most powerful camera app on the store. The ability to capture, view and edit depth maps allow you manipulate an image artistically doesn’t exist to my knowledge. The free version is great but I felt it was worth paying for out of principle. I use it more than the camera app itself. The developers have made this app run more smoothly over the last several months and added new features. (Great work). Highly recommended
This app re-writes how to edit apps. Bought the full edition for 12 bucks and it is the BEST 12 bucks I ever spent. There is a very large learning curve so you need to be patient. It isn’t for beginners neither, it is for those that want to really get into video editing in a 3D dimension. For 2D dimension, stick with photoshop express. My only complaint for lack of better term is using the various lenses for effects. It’s very difficult to find the effect when applying the lens filter as it is extremely subtle changes. I am sure it is user induced as I am only 24 hours into using this app.
Focus on Background. This is awesome. It’s exactly what I was looking for. I design media for a school. I don’t know a ton about photography terms, but I know what I want photos to look like. I was looking for an app that would let me sort of “reverse” portrait mode—focusing on the background instead of foreground. This does exactly that. And it’s adjustable. AND it’s free. If there’s a catch, I haven’t found it yet. Whoever made this almost deserves my money, but hopefully a good review will suffice because this is perfect and I’m happy about it. Thank you!
Great App. A bit pricy though.. EDIT from my original post: The app does wonders! Really good at what it does. The issue I have is how expensive it is. In USD it is $3.99 per week!! That’s $17 per month or $200 per year!! That’s insane! That is paying for the top tier of Netflix! They do NOT provide that much value. I understand if they are adding new revolutionary features, or if they are adding some ongoing value that is a cost to them. But I don’t think there are any backend costs that I’m unaware of. So yes, I think this app does an amazing job, but I think you need to pay for the subscription only as needed and not on a recurring basis.
Was once my go to editing app, until last update. This app used to be so good, it was the only editing app I needed. I even outright bought the software because I loved it so much. It had so many features, I could do all my editing in it. It was perfect for a hobbyist photographer. Then the update came a few months ago and took away everything. The only thing it will do now is let me blur the background, but it won’t let me use the brush tool to choose the areas. Nope. Now the AI blurs it and if it blurs or doesn’t focus on something you want in focus, screw you there’s nothing you can do to fix it. I have tried everything from deleting and redownloading the app 3 times, to restarting my iPad, nothing. It remains useless. I’m truly heartbroken over it. I loved this app so much, now it’s just trash taking up space on my iPad while I open it once in awhile to see if it’s been fixed. It’s been months now, and now it asked me to rate it. Yeah, you would have had a 5 star raving review. Now you get a 1 review calling you useless.
Portrait mode editing. I love taking pictures. Sometimes it’s hard getting a picture of my toddlers. Sometimes I hate the background when I get a good shot in regular mode pictures because I forgot to push portrait mode on my iPhone. You can fix it with this app. I just love it. It’s worth my money to be able to fix any picture into portrait mode where the background is blurry and the main subject is focused. I will keep this app as a main staple because I love taking pictures!!
Some sort of witch craft!. I got this app a while ago when I got an iPhone X. Mainly wanted to customize the bokeh of my portrait mode pics. But wasn’t super impressed so stopped using it. I just started using it again when I heard there was a way to add shallow depth of field to any photograph. The feature works amazing. I would say 95% of the time, it creates a very convincing depth of field blur, finding foreground, mid-frowns, and background elements and blurring them appropriately. I’ve been applying this effect to photos I’ve taken over the past 20 years. I currently have an iPhone 11 Pro and getting a native Portrait mode pix is still my fav option, but sometimes I don’t have enough space wherever I’m standing to get the portrait mode to activate. This app is able to turn those pics to great portrait mode pics. If they figured out a way to add this to videos, that would be amazing.
Updates killed this app. This app was truly a unicorn, and the developer is a genius. In the past I rated it 5 stars and used to rave about it to friends. This is an app that I would have gladly paid for. It allowed a creator to manually adjust focal minutia that the AI cannot capture, and the results are amazing. For some unknown reason, the developer a) locked the app into portrait mode, which is a serious pain for working on a large iPad; and b) all of the manual editing functions were omitted. So while the app is still useful for the average person doing pics for Instagram, it’s become next to useless for any serious photographer or graphic artist. It’s such a complete waste of some incredible development and algorithms. There’s no other app out there that I’ve found which can let a user manually paint the focus by brush or eraser size and percentage on a granular level. I rated it two stars because—like a gazillion other apps—it automates selective focus. This is redundant for me, so I’m trying to be fair. Otherwise it would be one star.
Problem lately, but used to be perfect!. I've used this app for some time. It has been my "go to" app for taking pics for selling my items on Poshmark, Mercari, EBay, etc. I am a full time retailer now!.... But lately when taking pics one after another, just as I always have, it freezes kind of. It will make the shutter sound and stop on the screen as tho it has taken the pic, but there is no pic below. I can continue to press the shutter button and it will continue to do those things and there will still be no pic. If I force close the app, SOMETIMES it will fix it, sometimes it will not and I just have to stop working altogether. This is a huge inconvenience! This was my last ditch effort before finding another app. I didn't want to delete it and re-install it because I'm not sure what work I would lose in the process? Idk. Maybe a developer might read this, maybe they don't even care about these. Who knows. It was worth a shot for me, if nothing else, I'll end up knowing I need another app... Is anyone else having this issue??? P.S. that's the only reason I deducted a star.
PLEASE RETURN THE NEAR & FAR CUSTOM DEPTH SLIDERS. Where did the custom near-far depth/focus sliders for the bokeh effect go? It was your BEST feature! It seems like the app has been simplified for the sake of usability but sadly at the expense of removing this golden fine tuning control. I admit there was a bit of a learning curve, but sooo worth it. (About a day or two of fiddling for me.) One or a series of short video tutorials could have easily overcome this. I got introduced to this app two years ago when I endeavored to take the family Christmas photos with my iphone when our usual photographer was unavailable due to Covid. I achieved professional results all on my iPhone using primary this feature, which is now gone. The single auto depth slider is not sufficient for photos with multiple subjects at varying depths, even slightly apart. Focusing one subject, unfocuses another. A real bummer. You had a good thing…
Not worth it. I just got this app and I already hate it. It’s so complex even for intermediate photographers like me. It’s so hard to use and the app doesn’t even work that well. Every time I put a photo to edit, it never catches the background, I even put a picture of myself that could not be mistaken for a background, however when I blurred the background it also blurred my arms and some of my face, such bad quality. There’s no way to fix it either. Also, EVERY time I try to save the new pic, literally nothing happens, no changes occur. I can’t believe this app got 4.8 stars, it’s probably one of the worst apps I’ve come by. Very disappointing and they want me to pay for the pro version? These people are crazy. Trust me and skip this app.
The most amazing photo editing app you’ve ever seen. Once you learn the basics, this app will completely blow your mind. It’s not an app for the casual user. It’s an app for the photo enthusiast who wants to win the photo contest every time. The possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to your 3D/portrait photos. Literally add new lighting sources (like a light bulb) to your photos as if they were there when the photo was taken, even allowing photos taken in the dark to spring to life with light and color; squeeze in blurring or glowing effects behind your photo subject that simulate motion or weather; heck, add in a completely different background. Once you’ve figured it all out, it’s up to YOU to just set the scene. This app along with the Hallide Camera App will make you feel like a photographer extraordinaire! Can’t say enough good things about it. My ONLY wish is that it allowed you to save photos with the depth map still embedded. Since Focos only really lets you change lighting and staging aspects (and not actually alter the photo) I would think this should be possible. But these guys are such geniuses with what they’ve done here, it must be something I’m not thinking about that makes this feature untenable.
Excellent portrait shots. Apples native portrait mode was giving me a headache to use so I looked around for a better third party solution. This app is not only faster at processing the portrait, but it does so more reliably and with fewer errors. It is a very strong app that is much better than the stock apple app. It still has some issues with hair and any sort of stringy background pattern such as willow tree branches and cobblestones, but this is an issue with cell phone cameras in general. Overall I recommend this app completely as it makes mobile photography good enough that I don’t have to pull out my mirrorless that often anymore.
NOT FREE AT ALL. I would give this zero stars if I could. A while ago, I used to be able to use a limited selection of the emulated lenses and other features, which was more than enough for me. It was fair for a free version. Now when you open the app, the first thing you see is a subscription page and a free trial button. There was no “continue to free version” or anything like that, so I clicked on the free trial. Nope. It just opened an App Store popup for authorizing a payment after however many days. So I clicked around a bit and finally got the subscription page closed. This lead me to a screen of my photo library, and when I tapped on a photo, of course, it just opened the subscription page again. Don’t waste your time with this. Apple stop letting these companies market paid subscriptions as free apps.
Hidden gem makes FaceBook 3D pictures POP!. Aside from the focus features the tool has a hidden gem called Patch. This utility allows you to modify the bump map of a Portrait photo to really enhance the 3D option in FaceBook. The tools take some experimentation. The color overlays options are too dark for the background. It lacks a magic wand selection tool fill color option and paint brush is just not as smart when it cones to borders as other image manipulation tools. If the author could add color gradient range fill users could create elements smooth basic like a 3D globe with realistic depth and planes in perspective. Maybe even a copy/paste of smoother perspctive planes? I’d also recommend that when the user selects a depth color, the tool jumps directly to the Brush tool for ease of use. Maybe a rub push / pull to have more fine control over the depth of the bump map. The 3D lens view is really good at spotting where the bump map needs to be fixed. I only wish the Augmented Reality mode had an edit mode so I could push pixels right where they need to be. The downside: The is nothing else out the that does bump map editing at all. That’s why I bought it.
Most useful post production app for iPhone but I see there is a new subscription model?!. I’ve paid an ungodly amount of money for photo manipulation apps over the years. Year after year I find myself editing more things in the photos app and not needing 3rd party. I paid for focos with my first portrait iPhone and forgot about it. Well I’m back and I love what this app can do that photos can not. Depth control and lighting control with an easy to use interface and a ton of lens presets from lenses I know and have wanted to emulate. Wow. Just wow. But wait. Missed the 5 star because I see there is a subscription model? Thanks for letting my purchase work, but it’s hard out there in the streets with all the stupid subscriptions.
Almost PRO but no DNG. Focos is an amazing app that generates a depth map, similar to Apple’s PORTRAIT mode, and creates a great illusion of depth-of-field in photos for savvy photographers. The ability to change the point of focus after the fact is HUGE! It looks great for most uses but the lack of DNG format for output limits it to non-professional use. The latest generation of iPhones 12 and 13 ups the ante for apps and produces outstanding images capable of professional use, but does require post-processing as an option— that means DNG format. It’s too bad that FOCOS does not deliver to that level. It’s TIFF format comes close but is just not good enough. I hope they add DNG format as an option.
Way too expensive. Dec. 2022 update: Happy Holidays from Focos, now you can’t even save a copy of your edited image! 🙄 I’m a professional photographer and I enjoy playing with this app using iPhone snapshots — it’s a cool app but $4 a week is crazy. That’s $208 a year before tax! $208!! 🤪 It’s still functional without the subscription but you’re punished with reduced-size 720-pixel images and unending prompts to pay up. I also find it takes a long time to load this app, which is a problem if you’re someone who pulls out their phone to quickly snap a photo. How is that compatible with that sort of price tag? The app also seems to either take forever to load or doesn’t load at all if you’re not connected to the internet. Again, fun to play with but if you enjoy shallow DOF images, for $200+ I’d say you should invest in, you know, a real camera and lens
Intuitive and functional. Been seeking a camera with RAW capabilities as well as an intuitive interface. Could this be the one? Am loving it so far with the easy controls and so didn’t even think twice to score it a 5. I’m still exploring and hope to provide a more valuable feedback in the future. So far it’s pretty much giving some of the professional capabilities at a touch away without making me think twice. Am amazed at how it’s actually able to apply effects to existing pictures while making them look good without much tweaks.
I LOVE IT!!. I have an xs max and sometimes portrait mode is annoying and you have to get all up close but with this app you can literally take a normal photo from a further distance than portrait mode and make the background unfocused afterwards. and it actually looks like it's unfocused and not just blurry like some other apps. i would 100% recommend this if you don't have the portrait mode function on your iphone. im very impressed!!
My go-to photo app, most of the time. I’ve always been intrigued by bokeh. I have a f1.8 lens for my DSLR that I love. Since purchasing this app, I rarely take my DSLR and f1.8 with me. I have a iPhone 12 Max pro and with this app, most of the time I have what I need in my pocket. The fact that you can focus after taking the photo and dial in the aperature is amazing. Admittedly, I usually use it for photos of my dog, but is is great for still life or other types of photography as well. I typically don’t edit the DOF at the time of taking the photo- but wait until later when I have some time where I’m less distracted and have better light for editing photos. I find the UI to be very easy to use and mostly use the editing in Focus to get the desired DOF and then export a copy to edit in other apps, such as photos for a quick edit or Lightroom for more detailed edits. Personally, I don’t use a lot of the more advanced editing tool in Focos, as I have my workflow which doesn’t incorporate the Focos editing tools. For me personally, the DOF was always a big hurdle when taking photos with an iPhone vs. a DSLR and this app bridges that gap effectively- I feel. Just be careful, sometimes you can take the bokeh a little too far and make the photo seem over-edited, in my opinion. Would totally recommend and have. 👍👍
Predatory Pricing…. You list several different options for subscriptions and even a lifetime subscription, yet when you open the app or click “Get PRO” in the settings, you’re only offered the $2/WEEK option. That’s $104/yr for an app that I guarantee most people will use only a handful times a month and there’s plenty of other apps that do the same thing without this predatory pricing model. Developers will learn sooner or later, I refuse to support an app with this type of price model, a once a month, year or lifetime subscription is perfectly acceptable as long as the price matches the value of the product you’re getting. I seriously hope you reconsider your subscription model, if you do I’ll happily revisit this app and subscribe. Best of luck.
Unrivaled Portrait Mode editing app. I love this so much, there is little to complain about. The AI is amazing at detecting the depth. And I’m so happy you can extract and export the depth map out of the photo. However, I really want one feature, and that’s to be able to import a depth map. I have been dying to do this as I like to make 3D posts on Facebook because it’s super fun. The patch function is cool, however, for things such as art and media, it’d be cool if we could import our own depth map. Everything else about the app is great though, from my time being on there. OH AND ALSO LIDAR SUPPORT PLEASE
My go to app for depth & blurr. I just can’t get enough! when ever I forget to turn on portrait in the main camera good old trusty comes to save the day. One of jewel apps, I just love it!! I do have 3 wish list items. 1: Being able to take out blur for blurry photos. 2: Let us know in the main photo album which one was edited with the app. 3: keep iPhones animated photos after edit. But that’s just wish list the app is awesome! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing!. I really love this app. It helps editing go by faster, you get on it, and just click where you want it to focus and it works all the time. I used to have this app that I would have to actually blur it out myself. It was good until I realized each photo took 30 minutes to blur out. Now if you want to do a 2 person picture it’ll have some trouble focusing on both. But all you gotta do is work with it and you’ll figure it out!
Amazing 🤩. I have tried a lot of these kind of portrait camera apps and no one does it better than Focos! It lets you control a lot about the photo even after you have taken it, like what part of the photo is in focus, the aperture size, and lighting. When I go to take a portrait photo on my phone I always use Focos. The best part is that most of the really nice features are free to use (some with limitations, but that’s to be expected) but you can still pay for the higher-end features. Overall wonderful camera app!
Free Version is Gone. The app is great BUT they’ve nuked the limited/free version which was great for my purposes. There was a time when I spent a lot of time doing photography but now I’m caring for my elderly dad. It’s not worth $60/year for the frequency I now need it. To me, the app devs are declaring that they’re not interested in anyone except serious photographers. I’m disappointed. If they had never offered a free version before I wouldn’t be as annoyed. I understand that there are apps geared to a specific audience but the switcheroo rubs me wrong. They need to edit the app description because as of 8/5/24, under “In App Purchases” it still says you get unlimited lifetime access for $12. (BTW I would willingly pay $12-15 for the free version but now I have to delete it.)
Recent updates have me looking for an alternative. It used to be you could export your edits in a lower quality without paying, which was good enough for posting to social media. Now you can’t even do that. It’s also worth noting you can still export a low-quality version to your iCloud storage, then from there download it to Photos. If this workaround exists I’m not sure why the devs felt the need to put that speed bump there in the first place, except maybe to incentivize people to pay to avoid that hassle. Disappointing. The depth of field adjustment has been removed; it never felt buggy or incomplete so I’m not sure why it was removed. That set it apart from other editors. The price has gone up for no discernible reason, and it’s still only weekly. No monthly, yearly, or (ideally) pay-once option. I’d have spent $100-$200 on the app if I could have just paid once and been done with it, but $4/week is laughable.
What happened?!. Got a response from the developer on the following rating/question, told me the studio effects in B&W were “better” than black background effect. What if I’m tryin to get a studio effect with color? Still miss this effect and the rating will still be just a solid 4 without it. Will have to find another app to fill in the gap. What have you done with "black background"?! This was a feature I most enjoyed about this app. The new models are a welcome addition, but why must something always be lost when new is added? Return this option and it would be the most used app on my device and would get a solid 5 stars.
I’m having fun but I can’t find my saved images.. I’m using this free, and I enjoy the tools. There are lots of functions I can’t reach without paying-I may subscribe eventually. It’s not completely intuitive, I think some of the tools are just over my head. I would like to be able to save an image that I edited to my photo stream when I hit save, that hasn’t seemed to work. I don’t normally review stuff because I want to play with it for a while before I give an opinion but this is certainly worth downloading and trying out. The 3D effects are great and I like switching the focal points in my photos. Update: I can do things to the image that I want to save. I haven’t found how to make that save happen. Yes, all images that are saved go to my photo album but I can’t save while it is doing bokeh.
I still cannot believe how advance it is!!!. Honestly, this is the first time I ever write a review on something, nothing has impressed me this much before! At first I couldn’t believe the features it offers, and how advance it is, I got a feeling I’m at least 5 years in the future! The app offers amazing focus on a chosen point, it than creates a 3D version of your picture which is very close to how it would really looked like, if your picture is focusing parts around the object you wish to be focused, the app offers coloring corrections - the darker the color the more depth it represents. And like that’s not enough, it also offers you lightning options, to add a light by your choice of type and place it on coordinates in the 3D version to be as close to the object you wish to set the light on as you want, (similar to Autodesk Maya). All this on a tiny phone! And most of these options are FREE! UNBELIEVABLE good. Well done guys, hats off.
Favorite photography app for the iPhone. If you want more control of your portrait mode pics (or even the ability to mimic portrait mode with your standard images), this app is for you! My three favorite features: being able to refocus the portrait mode images to any subject, the magic wand to fine tune the blur in front and behind the subject, and the AR view while adding additional light in an image (which also happens to digitally create accurate shadows as well)... With practice, your photos will look more professional!
Amazing app. I got to try out the app before I even got a dual lens phone and loved it. So it was my first download when I got my phone. I absolutely loved the app. But the downside for me was the lag taking a pic with portrait mode vs a regular picture (this is due to the phone, not focos) I love taking spur of the moment photos and couldn’t always use portrait mode. When I opened the app today to edit a picture and saw the new update that made it possible to use on all pics I excitedly tried a regular photo and it was absolutely perfect. I’m so thrilled that I just had to review. I have no real need for pro version but I think I’m going to buy it anyway just to support the developer. This is a must have app for photo lovers, hands down!!!
I love it!. I really hope you see this! It would mean a lot! But I love this app so much everything about it is impressive! It’s not the worlds best but s crazy how much detail it can put into a phone that doesn’t even have portrait! Is there a way you can put it to where the face is blurred only? So I can take photos of my dog without going into another app and blurring it? If so that would be amazing I wouldn’t have to upgrade my phone and use this app all the time! It’s totally okay if u cant but it would mean a lot if you do!! :) although I’m rating it 5 stars because it’s the best app I’ve ever downloaded :).
This App is Something Else. I had an iPhone X and a Nikon so although I could use this app it wasn't so interesting to me. Fast forward I pawned my camera to pay some bills and I have an iPhone 11 Pro so I thought let me stay active on social media and make the best photos I can with the tools I have. Lemme tell you this app if you give it the time to actually check it out is AMAZING. The level of computational photography at play here actually lets you do some things not even possible on a Pro DSLR or Mirrorless camera. Wow. I really like this app plus the price is not expensive. Of course the developers have to make money and this is not a product I choose for price. I choose this app for QUALITY, but the affordable price is just and added bonus that makes this app really attractive. I'm glad i've rediscovered this app. Great work developers!!!! Update: it’s 2021. I stopped using this app, but i’m back. Breathing new life into old photos. This app is better than ever! Wow. 🤍
Definitely one of my favorite apps. With the advent of this app I now rarely tote around my DSLR on trips these days. The ability to control the DOF and amount of blur is mind boggling and addicting. So much so I find myself using this app on photos I probably shouldn’t 😉. I think there is a way to paint in a mask so certain smaller details in the photo don’t get blurred but I can’t quite figure it out so I’ll have to watch some tutorials. Otherwise I have zero complaints and only wish something this amazing and powerful was available on the desktop. Hint hint…
My favorite app to play with. Mind boggling how deep this goes in terms of just the lighting alone. I’ve felt this way since I discovered how deep it went, nearly 4 years ago! I wish wish wish there was a desktop version. The mobile is great but sometimes when working on animations and videos I want to be at the helm with big screen and full controls, not hunched over an iPhone or iPad. I just saw clip drop released a “relighting” feature similar to focos but far less sophisticated. Still, since it’s on desktop and mobile I’m drawn to checking it out. Please consider a desktop version!! Focos is hands down my favorite app of all time
Mind blowing results. Once you go through the tutorial your photos will come out like if they were shot with a thousand dollar Nikon Len. This app has brought my photography to solid results, I’m very satisfied this app exist because the tools and effects are amazing. It got bokeh, lighting effects, blur effects, even a blur brush that is easy to use. When you open the app it already does it for you, you just need to use the brush icon tool to adjust the results. I highly recommend to purchase the features it provides, they are worth spending money on.
Be aware: Will delete photos. After trying this a a couple of photos, I’m having trouble finding the results. I expected to see the updated pic in my camera roll. And that is indeed where they are copied, but only TEMPORARILY. It appears there is metadata attached to the modified pic so the app can delete it after one minute. Particularly not cool since I could not a place where it’s mentioned on the app page. Hard to know if this is a “free” version feature or not. I suspect it is, but now I’m concerned this “feature” could wreak havoc if/when a bug is introduced. I understand the developer should be paid for an app of this quality, but I seems a watermark would achieve the same without removing pictures from my library.
Still loving this app. I do underwater photography with my iPhone and find this an indispensable tool. I love this app, and I recommend it to everybody who is shooting anything macro with their iPhone. There’s still a lot of things I would like to see improved. More zoom in patch and better patch options! The pop-up zoom window when working on details doesn’t actually zoom in more than the main window. I’d like to see better line definitions, or way to highlight the lines when trying to patch. Apple Pencil integration, my fat fingers can only do so well with the current set up. I realize it’s completely nich but better outlining and identification of sea creatures so that does a better job of mapping around fine hair like tentacles and fins (total corner cases). When shooting with raw, it removes any configurations already applied in other applications when you open it and focus, I’d like a way to either preserve the other edits or better editing, and particularly tools for color balancing. Color, brown blue and green waters specially within intense levels, such as in northern CA is an art form, So it’s frustrating to have to switch between so many apps to get it done… only to end up back to lose any of that work. Partly a workflow problem, but still frustrating. I’d like to be able to build a few of my own preset filters so I can quickly apply effects the images that I use as a regular basis, such as brightness split back ground down 80%, hdr 10, contrast 10 etc.

Brilliant little app. I usually don’t go out of my way to review an app but this little app is brilliant and deserves much more credit. Very focused at what it does and does it really nice. These are the apps that make iPhones - iPhones and helps exploit its full potential.
Absolutely fantastic!. I’m totally blown away how your App is capable of calculating dept of field even when using photos taken with single lens! The ability to further adjust and edit dept of field is amazing! All other editing features are fantastic! Excellent work! Thank you!
Stunning application. I downloaded Focos after seeing some incredible photos online, but was disappointed when it wouldn’t work on my iPhone 6s, but nonetheless I kept the app on my phone. Now with this update I’m so glad I kept the app as it makes portrait photos look amazing, thank you so much.
From amateur to professional. Super easy to use and will turn your photos into super professional ones.
Amazing 🌟. This app is really really handy and provides the resources to make your photos that much better. Would definitely recommend.
Probably the best app I've ever paid for. I use this all the time, and while there's a bit of learn curve for the more complex adjustments, with a bit of tutorial research it's an extremely intricate app that offers so much more than the default IOS camera. It's amazing, and if you love the portrait feature already, this app is a must.
Extraordinary. I have never bothered review an app before, but I felt compelled to write one for Focos. This app is remarkable. It does things that professional desktop software cannot. It is better than a DSLR in many ways, because you can change focus distance and aperture after the fact. You can also change the character of bokeh to simulate a clean a modern lens, wild vintage anamorphic, or anything in between. You can edit depth mattes to fix annoying errors (usually around hair). And on top of all that, you can re-light photos after shooting them in a simulated 3D environment. I would pay hundreds of dollars for Focos it I needed to. It’s that good.
free. this is absolutely the best app ever. periodt. I have an iPhone that no one ever uses- I used a photo and IMMEDIATELY it looked like it was taken off the newest iPhone. other apps are like “tHiS iS fReE” but it isn’t. this app should be advertisments-
Good …. But!!!. Like your program, but ever since the latest update, I can no longer use it in landscape mode on my IPad, it seems to be portrait mode only. And that’s a real shame, because it makes using it with the magic keyboard attached, unviable 😟 UPDATE: - Does anyone there actually read anything of these comments, or do they only read the good ones? Does you actually provide support for the App.?
Gives portrait mode on disabled devices. I’m never bothered to write a review but the is had to be said. I only have an iPhone 6s. That phone doesn’t allow portrait mode but when you use this app. It is easy as cake. Thank you Focos 🥰 10/10
Fall from grace. Used to be an amazing app with ability to change where the front and back bokeh began. I used to recommend this app to a TONN of customers i had but i dont think i will anymore. No one off payment and just subs is just crushing and destroying the app industry. It is still good for re-focusing a portrait photo which is great, hence the 3 stars, but thats about it. Also, if you modify the existing portrait photo and save over it, you will no longer have the ability to adjust the bokeh effect in the regular photos app which is a real shame.
Awesome utility which should be used by everyone.. I am absolutely gobsmacked how incredibly powerful this utility is. You can get an almost limitless number of different Bokeh focus effects bring iPhone/iPad photography up to DSLR camera quality. To say that I am gobsmacked would be a gross understatement. I haven using the program for only a week and have now discovered all the filters. More amazing by the minute. Best wishes to the developer and thank you for providing a great app at an affordable price.
The previous version was better. I liked the previous version of this app because you can erase an unwanted area that is being focused that the AI recognise. In this version, you only can add the focus the area (in depth tool) but cannot erase unwanted focused area. Please do work on it.
fcw. Excellent, having fun using the app, simple quick and easy to use. Just straight forward nothing complex. I have the choice where I want the focus on my image and have control on the aperture setting.
Some fantastic features. Focos, despite a difficult interface at times, is able to meaningfully improve my mobile phone photography in many situations that the built in photo app just doesn’t have the flexibility. I appreciate having the option to use my phone hardware a little more effectively. Thanks!
Must have app!. This app is really an essential tool for playing with and adding focus on photos, great tech even works on non-portrait photos and really amazing advanced features.
Was the greatest app…. I’ve used this almost daily for years. Loved it. Mostly because of the power of having a depth map and adjusting the depth of focus. Which they have removed and I have no idea why. The most powerful useful part of the app. I really hope they bring it back !!! 5 star rating if they do. 3 stars without.
Free version ideal for messaging/social quality. Limited to 1 MP sharing on free version but enough for sending to friends and family or posting on social media.
Almost there. A wonderful app with potential for improvement. The patch feature is pretty rough. It allows you to retouch depth masks by painting over them with a brush, which is finicky. It would benefit from a dodge and burn tool, allowing misaligned depth information to be corrected locally and globally without having to worry about edges bleeding into one another. The brush magnifier would be more useful if it was toggle-able, instead of appearing when painting slowly. And a tap-and-hold colour picker would make selecting a colour range far more intuitive than having to swap to the depth-colour slider. Alternatively, the ability to export and import the depth masks would remedy this issue by offloading editing to another app. The UI feels like it needs a polish pass: the padding of UI elements and icon choice don’t feel ‘professional’, and certain UI elements are hard to interact with, such as the front and back bokeh sliders in the effect tool.
Transforms your photography to professional level. One of the best apps I’ve come across and almost makes your switch to iPhone just so you can use this app.
Absolutely incredible. Amazing that this works so well even with photos that were not taken in portrait mode - or even photos downloaded from the internet.
Goes out of app when I try to go in. The app has normally been good, but recently it has started playing up, because it has started playing up, like I it goes straight of the app whenever I try to go in! Why is it doing this?? I have sent an email to support hoping that this gets fixed ASAP!
What happened to all the functions!?!. Update I have found the full app is available on my new iPhone 14. So frustrating that my iPad Pro 12.5 is only four years old, but not supported by this app anymore. I will not be recommending this app to anyone anymore and I’m actively looking for a replacement. So disappointed. _____ This used to be my all-time favourite photo editing app until the last iOS update and presumably a Focos update. Now it crashes all of the time, does not open properly and I’ve lost most of the tools. I especially miss the depth paintbrush. And why on earth can’t I use it in landscape on my iPad, what the heck?!? How can I go back to an earlier version?
Better than photoshop!. I use photoshop to edit photos and posters, it is good but complicated. And almost impossible to use on iPhone. Photoshop is the #1 when it comes to posters and text for me. But when it comes to photo editing and detailing, this app is the best in the business! I was amazed when I first saw the 3D effects on my favourite portrait photos! I love photography on plants, cities and Diecast cars, and for editing those photos this app has become my daily driver! (Pun intended) This app is my go-to for recommendations for friends. I don’t know what I would do without it! Great app!! One thing though… I would love to see the ability to add text, emojis and such. I still have to use photoshop to add watermarks and hashtags so I would love to see it make its way over to this app. Other than that it’s perfect!!!
Great!. Does what it does really, really well. Make subjects ‘pop’ by adjusting depth of field. If you only use one photo app-this should’ve the one.
incredible control. Takes phone photography to another level
Disappointing. I purchased this expecting I could buy the advertised lifetime access subscription , only to find they don’t offer it.. They’ve also stopped offering the yearly subscription.. all they offer is 8 different weekly subscriptions of varied prices with no explanation as to what differences they offer.. Extremely disappointing..
Wow. Got this because my iPhone 12 Mini’s default photo mode doesn’t have f stop adjustments, and the portrait mode blurs on the edges of the focus target which is incorrect. Not only does this app have “real” depth for blurring, you can also adjust it in post which is so dang useful! And very generous features for a free app. Thank you!
Should have been made by Apple. This makes my iPhone X the perfect travel camera. It will give me 98% of the photography capability I would otherwise need to carry my Canon 5D Mk2 for.
Great app. I love this app, the only thing is the fees, in my opinion if you made a few more free options it would be the best 😀
Deceiving update for already paid customers. I’d previously paid for the lifetime update and now since updating to todays latest, none of the previous features I’d paid for can be access unless I submit to paying weekly for a subscription. There’s no warning of this is the update description, just updated for a ‘brand new experience’. So it’s gone from paying a smaller one off fee to $6.49 AUD a week ($337 a year) which is way too much money. Not even a smaller one of yearly fee available. I’ve emailed to ask why. Until then - 1 star from the 5
Stonkingly good photography tool. This is the app that makes the iPhone X worth it: the postprocessing creativity it enables is just amazing. Bring up the exposure of a single element in the scene by singling it out in the depth field or desaturating all the elements behind it. Create lush, deep bokeh and lovely tilt-shift shots. And it's just continually improving thanks to a most diligent and active developer. The new feature that allows depth of field editing on non portrait photos is incredible. Keep up the lovely work, and thank you!
CANNOT SAVE TO CAMERA ROLL!!!. The only way I can save my edits is if I Overwrite original. That’s the only way I can get it to appear in my camera roll otherwise I just says processing & image saved and it doesn’t show up anywhere! Not in drive, not in files.. It just goes nowhere? I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Am I doing something wrong? I paid for it. lol. HELP!
A must app. Exceptional app. Use it to make your photos special. Focus in on the most important part of your pictures
5 Star Camera app. I used this app for 1 month, it was just like you bought something like Pro camera. Its just amazing I recommend that use this app instead of buying camera.
A million times better than the native portrait photo app. I use this almost routinely now, mostly for cat photos. So good.
An app that others can’t achieve. This app deserves a 5 star in ALL ways it’s free features feel sooooo professional and premium in a way that other apps will make you pay for them! This app is simply perfect for photography!!!
Very good — very useful. I downloaded this app about a year ago as I take pictures of students who win awards for the school newsletter. I never even used it once (too set in my routine with my iPhone camera ability). Recently I thought of taking in my DSLR and then remembered this app. Who needs a fancy camera when this app gives me exactly the quality and functionality I need? Thank you for a great app.
Absolutely love this app! I have a question though!. Hi Team! Long time user and I absolutely adore using this app but I was just wondering if you took away the feature to export the Live Photo as I have noticed since an update I don’t have that feature anymore, as when ‘live’ photo was activated I could see the depth and focus would pull throughout the image and it was awesome!! Kind regards :)
Continuously restricting features. Been a strong advocator for this app but they’ve recently removed a lifetime and ready subscription. The dev now wants to charge $4.99 per week for old features that were accessible to all users. That’s $250 AUD/yr less than an Adobe Litghtroom subscription with online storage, various apps for desktop, tablet, mobile AND web.
If you own a dual lens iPhone this is a must have app!. There are so many “same, same but different” photo editing apps in the App Store. Focus does not fit into that category. An outstanding app with simple built in tuition that changes what can be achieved with portrait photography on an iPhone. I am totally blown away with the results. So simple to use. If you have a dual lens iPhone you have to be crazy not to use this app!
Amazing.... This app is incredibly well designed - with every update it gets better and better! Edit: somehow I missed that the app can now do depth of field using any photo. Insane. (in a good way)
Love this app!. As an avid photographer this app provides me with the ability to highlight any subject anywhere, any time. Busy backgrounds just fade into the distance. I'm also impressed that you can take a photo in any app and adjust the f-stop in THIS one! Thanks gang. This saves me from lugging my DSLR everywhere 😊
WoW Depth of Field. What a great update. You’ve added even more value to this app with the new addition of a Depth of Field feature to any photo. Unbelievable. I am impressed and thank you because now I have this option available for the front camera after taking selfies on the iPhone 8 Plus that was never supported in iOS.
Stripped all the features!. Unless there is some kind of serious software glitch. Here is what is going on!! when I bought a lifetime license some time back this app ha some nice features. Now 90% of them have gone…I am figuring it’s because they changed their minds and decided to rip out all the best features and leave the app threadbare and make lifetime buyers rent those features. I don’t think I have experienced this type of blatant manipulation before….this is the lowest and most ruthless act I have seen yet from a so called software company, it’s literally a gangster mentality. A total rip off, they deserve to go bankrupt!
The best. For me, this is an insta buy to unlock full feature. The degree of freedom this app offers is out of this world. Being able to adjust focus in edit time and add my own lightings is already feeling like having my own studio on my phone, but on top of that, I can even correct the depth map by simply painting. Absolutely breathtaking. I've used this app to produce so many great results that my family and friends have all liked my photos. Thanks for making this!
Turn an Ordinary Photographer into a much better one. I love my iPhone for taking my photos but honestly I am not so good. Focos is easy to use and make a photo better. One of the best apps on in the store
It’s fine but…. The tools are terrific but the fact it’s subscription based payment feels a bit anti consumer. If there was a one time payment of $4.99 to give you better export tools I’d be all for it. But for now three stars.
Avid User. In a few words, this is indisputably the best photography app in the present market. I use it 5 days a week with my photography. New comment as of February 7; 2023. ATM, with the latest update, all tools are missing however I’m sure the Bending Spoons software engineers are working on this bug or bugs (for M2 IPads).
Clever, and effective when used subtly.. Though would love the albums to be organised more easily - they don’t follow the Photo’s order, not are ordered alphabetically so finding the album you want to work from always involves scrolling for ages. Otherwise it’s a genuinely useful tool - though often requires going in and using the paint tool which can be trick when you can’t easily see underneath the paint layer…

Already paid the app but Focos decided to change for subscription and erase the fact that I paid. Hey Focos, what’s that about not recognizing that your customers already paid for the app and just think we will “forget it” and pay the subscription. The option to restore my purchase does not work and prompts me to buy the subscription which I will not. If this is a mistake I will be glad to edit my review, but if it’s not a mistake I will ask Apple or my credit card company for a refund :)
I am unable to use the lifetime subscription. I purchased the app in 2018 and unable to access the lifetime subscription
Broken on Ipad for months. For a long time now this app has been completely impossible to use on ipad.
$$$. Too greedy, app is completely soft locked until you pay
Money hungry. Was my favourite then became a money grab
Instantly uninstalled.. After being met with a paywall when opening the app - which I closed - I proceeded to select a photo and I was met with the paywall again. You have to pay to use this “free” app. Very misleading.
BEST APP EVER. So happy with this app it’s amazing for making your everyday pictures look professional and totally free as long as you don’t get pro!🥰👌
Is it really worth $5 per WEEK?. Does it work well? Yes. Is it worth a few bucks a year or maybe a few months? Yes. Is it worth $5 a week? Absolutely not. This is an photo app that does only does ONE THING: compute the depth data and apply some blur filter. That’s it. In what world is this more expensive than Adobe Photoshop AND Adobe Lightroom combined?
Seriously, get this MF app. This app is so fun to use and is a must have for phone-photography. Works best on an iPad for more complex edits, but the phone application is fire too.
No way to get the lifetime purchase in the app.. No way to get the lifetime purchase in the app. Fix your app or edit the app description.
Free trial deceptive practices. I feel ripped off. Evaluated the program using 7 day trial. Trial expires on the 30th. I cancelled on the 29th and still got charged! All confirmations reference the 30th and fine print specifies cancelling the day before (on the 29th) which I did. How can they take money the day before renewal? Ridiculous business practice. The free trial isn’t free unless you cancel TWO days before and that you will not find written anywhere. People might love the software but I surely do hate the company. Give me back my money.
Love Focos, I use it everyday. I’m amazed how much this app improves my photos!
Already paid but got locked out anyway. Paid the old fee for the app and got all features and then suddenly after an update, most of those features became unavailable and locked behind a (sit down for this) 4.99 per WEEK subscription. So yeah, another app that used to be nice that ended up going the capitalist subscription route even though it has no ongoing cost per app and it’s excluding previously available features. Total joke and I’m not interested in this gimmicky feature set for a monthly fee. Deleted and devs added to ignore list, you’ll never get another cent from me.
No reason to be a subscription. It was a good app until they changed it to a subscription model only. RIP
Bad. Very disappointed… there is no free version. These guys only want money
Just keeps asking for purchase. Should have known that you have to purchase the pro version to use features. Wouldn’t have downloaded.
Updated: scam, paid in full for app, update forces a monthly payment for paid for product.. This was purchased as per license agreement, and paid for in full, but update forces monthly payment to use now. This is normally considered fraud, but appears to be good in the iTunes world. Works as you would expect it to. Solid. Adjustable aperture works better that my old school manual camera, of course
Payment information. I have no payment details for God sake Why is the app not free😡😡😡😡
Awesome. Fast and easy way to blur backgrounds
In app prices are obviously not true. App looks cool, but for 4.99 a week! As the only option. Me: uses app for five minutes. Values app at worth about $10-15. Erases app minutes later. Greedy greedy guys.
⚠️ They Track You. They track you across apps and the web, and likely collect your images too. Do you really trust a company that does that? See the App Privacy section of their App Store page for details.
SCAM!. What a scam of an app!!! They set it up as weekly payment because they’re banking on people forgetting to cancel after the free trial. I found this app was not worth what they’re charging so I cancelled immediately after I got the charge on my account and they wouldn’t give me my $25 back. Even after appealing the refund they still wouldn’t give it back. I used this app maybe once or twice and i’m out $25!! Such dishonest business practice!!
Decent app but Way too pricey. They ask you for $5 per week right after you turn on the app.
Ridiculous - unusable. I occasionally need to use software like this to edit a photo. Maybe once or twice a year. I want to be able to buy it and have it in my app collection for those rare times it is needed. But no, the only option is to continue to pay a subscription fee monthly? That’s so stupid I’m almost speechless. In addition, they offer a free trial but they won’t let you start the free trial until you have already agreed to paying them after the free trial, and if you don’t cancel promptly they’ve already got your payment. There should be a free trial and THEN it asks for payment. Developer, you have a lot to learn about business practices. I am deleting the app and will look elsewhere for my needs.
Paid to unlock, then they switch to weekly subscription.. I paid to unlock the app which I use occasionally, but after recent update they switched to a ridiculous $5/week scam. This is not $240/year app lol it’s not full photoshop, it’s a plugin.
$260 per year to use. I don’t care if this app has waltzing pandas spinning on a carousel. Even photo shop and adobe don’t have that gall and they are about as bad as they come. TOO FREAKIN EXPENSIVE!!!
Got it on my iPad & it doesn’t show anything. I don’t get how I got it on my iPad Pro and when I go only shows me aperture nothing else I can’t use any other thing and I even got the pro for the trial and refreshed multiple times nothing it sucks
4 stars where?? WORST CASH GRAB EVER. You can’t even use a single feature without a subscription. 4.99 per week? Are you kidding? 99.99 per year? You can find way better, far MORE professional and LESS expensive tools out there. This app is a TOTAL RIP-OFF and clearly the people running it are not tethered to reality.
nice app. works fine thanks
No free version available after update. They used to have a free version with an option for a paid PRO account … after I updated my app, it got rid of it and now I can’t use it unless I pay weekly or yearly. It is a fully pay-for app now if you’re wondering!
Uh oh.... This app is so powerful, as a photgrapher, it scares me. I put a lot of friggin’ money and time into my photography and even the free version of this app can render an iPhone 8 shot into a dramatic, effective image in minutes. You can even re-light the bloody image! If you shoot in RAW then use the pro version of this app, you can TECHNICALLY relight your whole shot! It doesn’t quite work like that, but it is powerful enough to alleviate the hobbyist photography from a $900 lighting setup purchase. You still need to put effort into your images; this app won’t build the foundation for you, but it can take a good foundation into the stratosphere. UI is solid. Straightforward. Editing images on a phone still makes me want to kill myself, but in a pinch, if I must, this app represents a UI that removes as much of that pain as one could ask. I think that an entry-level dslr with wireless connectivity, or an SD card reader for a phone, a basic kit lens, and this app, would be an incredible bang for your buck setup. You would have all the tools you would need to make top tier images. You might not have Photoshop and Lightroom, and your pace of editing large volumes would be too slow, leaving professional work out of reach, but the only thing stopping you from having a beast Instagram account would be your own skillset. There are still physical-technical barriers that even the best AI cannot surmount. The sensor on phones will inherently never compare to the sensor on an APS-C or Full Frame camera. This app cannot turn your garbage shot into a great one. But with that being said, while Focos may not let you work actual magic, its incredible AI gets you about as close as you possibly can to doing so.
The Best Photo App. The Best Photo App
Gets job done easily. And has more advanced features if you want to experiment more
Typical free app scam.. Totally unusable unless you sign up for the free trail first, which will automatically start charging you a few days after you forgot all about the free trial.
Won’t let me cancel. Umm…it won’t let me cancel. I click cancel in subscription and it just flicks. Wrote them and yet to hear back. Hoping I don’t have to do a chargeback on visa :/
Excellent. Very clean and user friendly. Makes photos look amazing. Thank you.
Lifetime unlimited access???. On the app store it says you offer lifetime unlimited access. Where is that??? I cannot find it anywhere. The only option I find is for weekly which I do not want.
Nice App. Its easy to use simple no complication and updated regularly so go for it if you dont have one
Locking Features behind Subscription? No Thanks. From a former user who purchased this app - this subscription switching behaviour has got to stop. Terrible business practice.
Bought the lifetime payment. Now it start asking for more monthly fees. This is illegal business practice.
Nice App!!!. I love this app. Its easy to use. highly recommended for editing for focus on sudject. One thing why I cant get a focus pro?
Red flag. Downloaded it and delete it. As soon as I open the app the asking me to pay. Red flag
Sad change in direction. This app used to be good and offered a lot. Now it’s a paid subscription weekly which is a terrible direction from the developers. They have essentially killed this app. Unless you pay weekly this will not be of any value to you. The developers have forgotten where they came from.
There is nothing free about this app!. After you set your level of obtrusiveness by the app with your information, and you want to see what the app can do… send money for free trial. There is no free trial.
Edit : Ruined experience. Previous status restored. 5 stars! I loved this app so much that I took the lifetime option even though I do not use the app extensively. Today I opened the app to find I have to subscribe weekly at $5 per. Not cool. You’ve lost an early supporter
Disappointed.. This used to be my favorite editing app, and I've had it installed for over a year and then suddenly I can't use it anymore because it's not free anymore. It doesn't bother me, I would've paid, but these prices are ridiculous. $4.99/week?! That's $20/month and $240/year! How can you go from free to $240.. If it wasn't so expensive I would've 100% get a subscription because I love this app so much. So upsetting.
Oh. Your “lifetime” not lifetime anymore?. If it's lifetime or Pro in the beginning, respect your legacy users. It's ridiculous. I' give it 1 star and also post on reddit. It never should be like that.
Used to be free. Default features used to be free and now its behind a monthly subscription. Do worth paying nor downloading this app
Don’t ever down load. Don’t download this app. It’s garbage. I can’t even try and is asking me to pay $3.99/week fee. No way..!!
Bad practices. Paid for the app, but they switched to weekly payments. Not worth it, especially after paying for the app initially they took away your features and require you to subscribe for 5.99 a week to use them. After paying. Very sus. 👀

Ruined by update. Loved this app for a long time. But now an update has taken away all that made this app great. Paid for lifetime access but didn’t expect that would eventually mean losing what I paid for. If I knew this was going to happen I would have stopped updating it. Getting tired of paying for apps only to have some developer decide to rob me of the features I bought the app for. Who thought this was the thing to do? Who asked for this? The app was good, but not good enough that you can remove the tools to manually adjust without degrading the results. I’m sure there are plenty of apps out there that do the same thing that Focos is now limited to. Why should I use your app now? I heaped praise on this app and it was an amazing app. No more. One star. Very disappointed. Big thumbs down. I’m guessing the average rating on the App Store will magically remain high but many reviews will probably indicate otherwise.
Great App But have suggestion. I love this app and use is frequently. So frequently and while editing multiple photos at a time that i wish the app had a way that i good edit a picture and then just swipe left to the next one to edit. Instead i have to hit the home button and relocate the next picture. But overall i will continue to use it and look forward to seeing growth and improvements
One of the best apps out there. I've used the native camera and a few 3rd party apps, and this is by far the most useful for editing. There are others that can do more, but none do it with the simplicity and ease of this one. Also, with everyone jumping on the awful subscription model, focos is still a nice one time purchase for pro. Please keep it that way.
Fantastic app, great usability. As someone who has worked in mobile app development and design, this app really impresses me in its functionality and usability. It does a great job at automatically detecting depth and creating the bokeh effect, and the tools for adjusting the depth layers are fantastic. I use this app regularly to fix photos where my iPhone didn’t get the depth quite right, or when I forget to use the portrait setting. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. From my time using it , I haven’t encountered many ads , if any at all! It helps so much with portrait pictures , making them much more in depth or much less depth. And even if need help with a picture that wasn’t taken in portrait mode , this app now automatically renders pictures that aren’t in portrait mode. So you can edit any picture!!
Way better than the iOS camera. This app seriously makes the native portrait mode look like a joke on the iphone. It was so limiting and doesn’t even let me take closeup portraits because of odd focus distance limitations. Focos gives you all the flexibility you need and it’s fast AI depth calculation is absolutely astonishing. I run almost every photo thru this app including old ones taken on different devices now.
Love the iPad update. Update: what’s going on with the iPad version? A majority of the features are missing. No contest—this app handles the depth map to produce results better than any other app out there (AND better than Apple’s stock portrait). Love using it to edit photos from the iPhone X. This app needs a phone that can take Portrait Mode photos with the Camera app. For those concerned with low star reviews, please read through some of them and note how it’s usually a compatibility issue with an older phone.
Amazing. So I do a lot of photography and unfortunately my main cameras are down right now. I have an I phone 11 but the one that only has 2 cameras on the back. I figured I might as well see what it can do and this app has blown me away. I can change the aperture which is exactly what I was looking for. Aside from all the other stuff this app has to offer I’m stoked on it. Definitely recommend
WORTH EVERY PENNY & MORE.. I’m somewhat skeptical about Cam Apps these days. But this APP delivers on every level & more. It’s totally worth the full purchase. It’s pretty much a complete manual focus ‘in cam app’ that will give you all those lovely effects created by Bokeh & wide open apertures + a multitude of manual adjustments necessary to take the perfect picture with a smart device. The best thing is - when you buy the App upgrade. It will automatically synch with your purchases for the IPad as well. No 2nd purchase. Thanks FOCOS.
Absolutely incredible!. The new update is remarkable. I do have a dual lens camera, but being able to get depth data out of non-portrait photos is insane. Amazing app, super helpful developer too! A few months ago I asked about an issue and got a response promising it to be fixed in the next update, along with a feature I requested. And it happened! Great person, awesome app and overall a must have tool for phone photography.
❤️10 Stars for Focos!❤️. App was already amazing for tweaking our portrait-mode photos taken with newer iPhones. With today’s update, we can turn ANY photo into amazing portrait-style with bokeh background. Just brush on the places you want to stand out and it automatically blurs the background, plus provides many other options such as lighting, aperature, shapes, etc. Highly recommend it; just purchase Focos Pro—it’s the best of its class!
Great app for quick edits. I used to use a Adobe app that they discontinued. It was perfect for editing photos of my desserts. This app is comparable and fairly easy to use. Since I’m not a photographer, a better tutorial or guide would be helpful. I’ve muddled thru and it’s a great app for quick edits. And much simpler to use than most of the other apps out there (trust I’ve tried lots) and it doesn’t take up tons of space either. Def give it a try!
Better than built-in camera - even on new iPhone 12 Pro. The default camera added synthetic depth data for "portrait" photos with their first dual-camera phone but didn't allow editing. The Focus App added that. Later, the default camera added editing "depth" but only for the newest phones. The Focus App allows editing depth on all phones and also allows editing all filter settings based on depth. Even with the newest iPhones. The default camera decides if a portrait photo is available. The Focus App always allows portrait photos and lets you choose the initial point of focus. It may not be natively integrated like the default camera but the Focal App is a much better Camera (and editor) for portrait photos.
Great app. I don’t exactly write reviews as often as I should but after extensive use of this app I found it’s profound usefulness to be significant. I really cannot express my satisfaction in words but believe me this app is amazing.. even the free version Belice it or not . 5 stars any day .. my only suggestion is that the AI is worked on a bit as the layers can be mixed up but otherwise noooo problem.
Revolutionary mobile technology, wow!. This new update is amazing, I have the iPhone 8 Plus and although portrait mode and everything is built into the phone the selfie portrait mode isn’t available on my phone, this app allows that feature to come alive, and any other photo it allows me to change the depth of field regardless if it was on portrait mode. This is a game changer and it looks so accurate! Must have!
Pro level photo magic. Absolutely blown away at this app and it’s abilities. Not only does it offer the capability to edit portrait photos like never before, but it offering the absolute to estimate and very accurately measure depth in non-portrait mode photos is wild. It takes my iPhone photos into DSLR levels with almost always accurate blur levels to emulate a shallow depth-of-field. A must have for photo takers.
PROFESSIONAL. I never write reviews for apps but this is necessary at this point. I just started using this app and it’s exactly what I was looking for. I don’t want to scribble out where I want the blur to go. That’s time consuming and looks tacky. But this app just does it it seconds! I want to thank the makers of this app because this seriously made my life so much easier and my pictures look so PROFESSIONAL! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
OMG. My favorite photo app of 2018 AND 2019!. I have recommended this app more times than I can remember! It transforms your iPhone into a DSLR (of sorts) because you can change the focus on ANY photo after-the-fact! And then with the full purchase, you can change the shape of the blurry background bokeh into other shapes - like hearts, stars, Apple logo, etc. SO fun and amazing!!!
New Update Removed Critical Feature. I have been using FOCOS for years, and the single most important feature is being able to adjust the size of focus in focal depth in an image. While your tutorials within the app say you can still do this, I have spent a long time looking and the feature is nowhere to be found. I will change my review to 5 stars if you guys add this back, as this app is unlike anything else out there and extremely useful for so many photographic applications. Very disappointed you removed this feature. I hope you correct this soon.
Great App Never Fails. I’ve been using this app for about two years now and it has not failed me. I’ve taken some of my best photos with this app. The customization and features are unmatched when it comes to this application. If you are looking for an app that really pushes your camera to the limit this is for you. The bokeh is much better on this app than default one.
Thank you!
Excellent tool - I love it. If frigging apple wasn’t going to charge me every week for it I would gladly pay the price for this one it does exactly what it says it’ll do and it works great no hiccups no problems just an awesome program A shame that Apple has to shoot themselves in the foot by being greedy again I’m not paying for this thing 35 times a year
REMOVED PREVIOUS FEATURES. Developers removed all the features the iPad app used to have. I paid for the lifetime license, and come to use the app a few months later to find all the features but the most basic missing. Not sure if this is a bug or if the devs are just completing disrespecting their customers with such criminal actions; unfortunately they won’t respond to anyone regarding this topic. They shouldn’t be taking away features people previously paid for. DO NOT pay these developers anything until they show a change of heart.
Disappointing. This app used to be my favorite. I paid the subscription without even using the Pro features just to support the app even though the main features were free. Now they've removed the lifetime price, screwed people out of a "lifetime" option they've already paid for, and exponentially raised the price. You also cannot use it at all anymore without paying for Pro, when all of the basic features used to be free. Extremely disappointing that the developers decided to go down this route.
$3.99 a WEEK?! I’m deleting.. I used this app constantly and I loved its features, back when it was free. I will now have no choice but to delete an app I like because of the developer’s decision to charge $3.99 a week to use it. I’m sorry, but I’m not paying as much as I pay for Netflix for a photo editing app that I only use for one thing—even if it does that thing well. There isn’t even a free option to watch an ad instead of pay actual money and still use the app—it there were, I’d still use it. Essentially, the app is now useless to me. I am going to delete it and find other options.
Does a good job but options are confusing. This app does a very good job of mimicking some lenses, but has a confusing range of options. It’s hard to tell the difference between many settings. Also, I was hoping this app would all allow for true depth simulation with both items in the extreme foreground and far background blurred, it handles background blurring nicely, but has problems with items in the foreground (often the blur looks like bad photoshop). Still under most portrait circumstances, the results are decent.
A #shotoniphone game-changer. The things you can do with this app 🙌. Portrait mode is great and all, but it still doesn’t give you that wide open look you get with a larger sensor. This app really gives you so much control over how your depth of field looks. Honestly I can’t tell the difference between some of my iPhone and actual camera shots now (without pixel peeping of course). The yearly pro price was very reasonable as well.
What in the world? $$. Being a Focos user from a long time, was about to buy both Focos apps for the one time price but now when I try to purchase it I only see the subscription based pricing and not the one-time option that was visible earlier. I still see that available under the app pricing description though. Why is the one-time purchase option not visible? I had recommended this app for so many camera savvy friends but …
The best iOS camera app out there. Better than the stock camera app. Especially well with low light photos where the stock camera would have trouble making out finer details in a darker environment. Practically turns my iPhone 7 camera into a 7 Plus camera (without the dual camera features). AIA there's absolutely no reason not to use this app. Wish I could rate 5.5 stars
Great app for a pocket DSLR. I come from a photography background back to the dark room ashes and digital has take. Over but the basics of your manual settings on a dslr can be achieved with the Focus App. Highly recommended for a fast and user friendly app on your phone to mimic what can be captures with a larger dalr camera. The aperture, wb, and exposure features are simple to use and intuitive (you will not miss a beat with this app) enjoy it! Thanks guys! Great app!
New updates make the app far worse.. I used to love this app, it was once perfectly great. But with every “update” (and I use that term loosely) Focos will experience some issue or another or broken features or removal of functionality. I rarely use it anymore. The latest update breaks the “patch” feature so much it basically doesn’t work. It makes me question, did anyone even bother to test this??) If you try and zoom on the picture it jumps all over, the brush tool stops working and you simply can’t use it. It seems with every update they break some feature or another and simply don’t prioritize fixing them. It’s a shame as it was once a great tool.
Chooses wrong photo in Photos. Fantastic app!! But with the latest update it chooses the wrong photo to edit in post, from Apples Photo app. By that I mean that when I choose a photo from Photos that has previosly been edited in another app, and saved as a copy in Photos app, when opened in Focos, it chooses the Original photo over the edited version instead, and which is the one I want to edit.... Strange. That only means that I have to edit in Focos, and then edit in other app. No big deal. Thanks!!!
INCREDIBLE. I’ve been using this app for almost a year now. Me being able to adjust depth, change where the depth is in the photo, allowing me to add effects etc. Every single one of those features are amazing. It was a 5 star. Now with the added feature of taking any picture and being able to add bokeh is a 10 star rating. Incredible work you all are doing. Lifetime membership is even better!
Features stripped out and removed, problems ignored by developers. This will be familiar to anyone who looks at the most recent reviews of this app, but the most recent updates have removed key abilities from this app, particularly much of the depth mapping adjustment abilities. I’ve reached out to the developers asking if this removal was intentional and if this feature will be restored - and got no response. And it sounds like many other people have been asking the same thing and also been ignored. It’s disappointing because this app was so good until a few months ago and now it’s been made deliberately worse with no explanation.
The Best of the Best. Focos is one of those apps that changes the game, the parameters, the expectations of what I thought was possible with computational photography. It can take gorgeous Portrait mode imagery or brilliantly recognize the foreground of photos NOT taken with Portrait mode, creating accurate depth and customizable bokeh in the background. Testing it up against other apps, I find it is one of the most accurate at this kind of iPhone digital photography magic. And then, last but not least, the Focus team is prompt and detailed with iOS updates, which makes all the difference as photography continues to evolve with each new OS. Highly Recommend!!
Bummed with new paywalls. There used to be basic features and pro features (paid) but now the whole app is behind a paywall so I can't use it at all anymore. I used to use this app to tweak the focus on photos. I run a social media account for the small business I work for. I never used any of the other settings, that was the only one I needed. Sometimes my boss or customers will send us photos of our products that we want to use on social media but they are out of focus or don't highlight our gear. This app was always helpful for that but since I only ever used one feature, it's not worth $12 a month or $70 a year for the lite version, it's even more for pro.
This App Rules. Get the paid version. It’s truly amazing. It even makes photos that you didn’t use portrait mode or the in-app camera to take look stellar. That’s especially useful when you need to take a photo of a fast moving subject or pull out the camera app really quickly to snap a fleeting moment. Really amazing stuff.
Great app but one problem. The app is amazing and makes your photos look high quality. One problem is that sometimes on certain pictures, for example a full body picture a friend took for me, it won’t focus on my hand which is sticking out a little. It focuses on all my body except my hand and I get frustrated because whatever I do it won’t focus in my whole body. This needs to be fixed asap.
This the one y’all. Yo tryna get a regular pic to look portrait is dumb easy with this app. And the fact that I’ve been able to save a picture to my gallery without having to watch an ad first just makes me keep using it more. I’ve already edited about 45 pics already and I just opened the app not even 5 min ago
From Great to Greedy. I used to really enjoy this app because it offered great features for free, and it stood out from others because of that. Unfortunately, now even the most basic functions that were once free are locked behind a paid subscription. It’s disappointing to see an app that was so useful turn into something you can’t even use without paying. I understand the need for revenue, but removing what made the app appealing in the first place just pushes loyal users away. Really sad to see this change.
Revolutionary app. This is by far the most revolutionary photography app for the iPhone. The developer of Focus is very passionate about pushing the boundaries of iPhone photography at it shows. Version 2.0 is SUCH a powerful update, bringing portrait mode to non-portrait photos. Let that sink in... any normal photo you take can now be enhanced with this app to add depth of field and elevate your photos to the next level. Kudos to the developer, I cannot wait to see how Focus grows.
