I love the cameras, the app? Not so much. I 100% agree with Stephan Brown’s complaints, I’m having the same exact issue and it’s very annoying. Someone tried to break into my house, so I finally put my system up for a piece of mind. But the app needs work. Multiple times a day I have to manually reset the cameras on live view for each channel and when I do get a motion notification, I always get a spinning black screen. If I go back to check what it was, it didn’t even record it. Now, I have it set to continuous recording so I can just watch the entire day or go to the times where I need something. Pretty inconvenient for me. I LOVE the cameras, though. Great quality. I just hope the developers can work through these issues.

Great System / Horrible Mobile App. My system is outstanding. All 8 ports have a camera connected to it. Wish the system had more than 1TB of space. The system works great and I have no issues reviewing records while I am at the system itself. My issue is when I want to view it from the mobile app. It really needs to be updated for the larger screen devices. It should also stay connected for a few mins after closing the app instead of terminating the connection immediately. I have the fastest internet connection available in my area but the lag time is horrible when viewing recordings remotely with the app via my cellular data AND when I’m connected to the same WiFi network.

Works pretty well. Like the app, works pretty good. Only thing I hate is that you have to keep reconnecting to your device. If you close the app out and then hear something outside it takes too long to open and connect to the camera. You have to open it, click live, click device, tap your device then it loads the cameras. It’s quicker go over and look at the monitor. Should stay connected or connect automatically to the device that was last selected.

Decent System, Bad App. For the price, our camera system is decent, so no major complaints with it. The major downfall is the app. It crashes frequently. When it is "working" it isn't necessarily working. For example, when choosing Live View, you typically have to open it 3 or 4 times to get the cameras to load. Then, when they do, many times they are just black boxes. Sometimes you get all the cameras, sometimes a few, other times none at all. Also, the app seems to disconnect from the camera quite often, so you are constantly having to reconnect it. Night Owl needs to do some major improvements to this app!

Basically useless.. I so wanted to give a good review, but this system and app are terrible. The cameras are OK, not great. The app, which is supposed to notify you of activity via alert notification, only works when you are actually in the app. Whenever you leave the app, it disconnects from your cameras. This also means that if you hear a noise in another room and want to quickly check what it was, you have to keep restarting the app until MAYBE it connects. While I haven't had issues with skipped video, it's impossible to sort through the video at all, so if it did catch someone while you were away, you would need to watch through the whole day to actually be made aware of it. I had a recent break in and this system fails to make me feel safe. At the price it's at and the amount of customers they have, they should be able to meet even our lowest standards. They do not. Seriously, don't waste your time. Return this system now.

Needs an update. I have been using night owl for almost 2 years now since I moved into my new house with my children after separating from their father and I heavily rely on night owl camera system to protect my children in my home. But the only problem is I really have with this camera system is the app is very laggy and glitches if you want to fast forward or rewind and I can’t hear any sound even though there is a sound bar option at the bottom and also when I have notifications turned on they are constantly going off which causes me to have to mute them and not be able to really get notifications unless I go to look at it but other than that I really do love the camera system and the quality of the picture is pretty good so no complains there but please update the app!! 🤲

Failure. I bought this unit for a peace of mind, but l was wrong. My alarm system went off and l tried to review my camera system remotely to see if someone broke into my house, but the system was not working. It keeps disconnecting me. So, l have to bother someone to check my house just to be sure. If nightowl was working right, l would have seen it right away and cancel the alarm. I guess this was a waste of money and should have bought the other brand instead. There was only one justification in buying this system, to have eyes on my house while l am away. I agree with everyone's comment regarding the remote access. Its a failure. They could have done better than that. I will buy a different brand with a better remote access next time.

App is not effective!. I think the system is great but the app is not and without the app being efficient then the system is of no use! First of all it is ridiculous that I have to constantly re-select the cameras I want to see for my live view....perhaps there should be a save button to save the cameras you’ve selected and edit button to change them around...or it should just save automatically. Next when I get an alert on my phone 99% of the time when I go to check I can’t see the video, it’s just loading even when I’m connected to WiFi so I know it’s not an issue of me not having service on my phone. If these issues were fixed this app would receive a 5 star rating from me....please update the app to fix these issues!

Worst app ever downloaded, system useless if I can’t use the remote app. Purchased the system because it had all the features I wanted. But it is all useless to me if I can’t remotely see my store when I’m not there. Only time it works a little bit is when I’m actually in the store on the same WiFi, other then that it doesn’t work 99 % of the time, and the other 1% it works for maybe 15 secs before it crashes. If you just purchased your system, look for Your receipt because this app is useless. If you’re thinking about buying this system, don’t! There are a lot better one out there that actually work with an app. I just wish I looked at the reviews of this app before I bought my system

Good product. Weak App.. The Night Owl system itself is pretty good. Here are the biggest concerns with the App. Motion notifications: I often get a notification but when I press it, it opens the App and goes to the previous camera, or plays a video from earlier in the day, or sits there spinning. Even worse, the notification doesn’t indicate which camera had motion so you don’t even know which one to go check manually. This really makes the system almost worthless to me and seems like it would be so easy to fix. (This is not occasional. This is well over 50% of the time). (The other two camera systems I have both list which camera right in the alert and pull it up flawlessly in the App when there is motion). Live View: The App constantly (several times a day) goes back to blank on Live View and I have to manually go in and add all the cameras back in to the view. To make matters worse, it’s about a 50/50 shot whether the App will respond when I go to add a camera or I may have to come back and do it a few minutes later. Makes it really hard to trust the system when it’s so buggy and you don’t know if it will be there when you really need it.

App and firmware updates. Whenever I open the app to view my cameras I have to swipe to the next screen and stay there for about 30 seconds until I can swipe back to the main screen and get views of my cameras. Sometimes I have to hit the square and add/select the camera channel to view live. Not sure why that is but it eventually comes up and I would like it to come up automatically when I open the app. Second thing is viewing recorded video. When using the app or logging into the system I find it hard to scrub the video to the point I want to review. Either I go to far or not far enough and I have to wait u til the video plays out to see what I want to see. Is there a way to add a feature where we can actually type in the time we want to go to and have it jump to that time? That would make it so easy to review recorded video without having to wait until the video plays out to the point you want to review. Other than that, the system works great for me. Thanks!

Needs update (iOS 14 issues). I used to enjoy this app (easily 4-5 stars) and worked well for what it is. However, as soon as I updated to iOS 14 this app has become almost unusable. Lucky to get the feed to load - when I do, it is frozen and unusable. Still works well on old iPad that is not updated and Apple computer. But please please please - provide an update for ios14 compatibility so this app works again!!! update: Developer response generic and shows little interest in customer feedback for acceptable user testing. I will need to look to another competitor on my next upgrade. While the system is decent directly to the monitor - the app is a critical aspect of the need to the consumer. Without being useable or updates being provided the system becomes obsolete. Thanks NightOwl! Enjoyed it while it lasted.

App DOES NOT Work. Every time I try to go to live view it just shows it's loading, feed is blacked out or the feed is paused. Then I go to device manager and it either says connecting or connected. I've done several test from the main unit and it says it's connected. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the app. I even checked for updates and nothing. The whole point of buying this security cameras system was to view when I'm not in the store. Should of gone with a different brand. If I could give zero stars I would because of how frustrating this is and the time spent setting up these cameras feels like a waste. I highly DO NOT recommend this for businesses if you're planning to use this for live view on mobile devices.

Straight Forward App. The application itself is very straightforward and easy to utilize. Though in update is needed for recorded videos formatting, so that you can save it on your phone and also send. Currently at this time the video format is too large and will not send via email and cannot be watched. I had to purchase a separate application to convert the video to a format that can be saved onto my device, for the purpose of viewing and sending it via text or email.

Can’t see or doesn’t connect. During the day you can see unless you try to zoom in, if you zoom in to see who is at your home it’s fuzzy and pixelated. At night you might as well not even try you would need spotlights to see and then still have the problem of the picture not being good when you zoom in. My favorite issue though is no matter if I’m connected to wifi or using my data half the time I can’t even connect to my device. These issues are the main reason I won’t purchase anything new.

Disconnect. This app need to be updated ASAP. The only review is from 4 years ago and the complaint is the same. Hasn’t been fixed. It lags when you want to re play on the app. Also it gets disconnect all the time. I can’t see the cameras on the app when I’m away. It’s very frustrating. I have high speed internet. The app is been updated, so it should not be a problem , but I still do have a problem been disconnect. It defeats the purpose of having the cameras, when you can’t see them on the app when you are away. Why you haven’t updated? If I would know this issue, I would have not bought them. Very disappointed!!

App needs to be revised. This app is completely outdated, when you open the app it does not open the camera view, you have to select the veiw, and then it loads the cameras! The push notifications stop working one day, and has not worked every since. The last app update was 1 year ago, developer, you need to revise this app with the new OS updates. Also needs a revamp of the appearance, it looks like an app for iOS 4. Update February 22, 2020: The app now crashes, I’m unable to use it! The system is awesome, but the app needs a major overhaul. I don’t know why Night Owl still has a lot of problems with the app, and refuses to revise and update the app. I’m in a point that I’m going to throw a good system on the trash and get a new one with a company that offers better support.

Will never improve. When I bought this camera system two years ago I believe the app was at 3 stars, unfortunately it has declined over time and now sits at 1.7 which is poor. My wife and I are probably just going to sell the entire thing because it is frustrating trying to connect when we are on vacation. We always get the same “disconnected” error when it clearly is connected straight to our modem. There are systems line Blink that you can connect to within seconds. Night owl however, if you don’t get the common disconnected error then it’ll take a while. I don’t recommend using this app for safety. As someone mentioned in the reviews that if you needed to see what a noise was from outside your home chances are it’ll be too late. The app is what’s going to kill this product. The cameras are great and quality as well but the app is a major fail.

Worst security camera app. I normally never leave reviews for anything, but this app just pushed me. The cameras themselves are great but this app makes me want to get a whole new security system. Every time I go into the app, it needs to reconnect and takes about 30 seconds before i can click my system and view my cameras. Then when I’m finally viewing my cameras, I have to keep changing it to 4 channel view since default is 8 channels. THEN after that I have to manually put each camera view in HD mode. This is the stupidest thing. I have to do this EVERY TIME I leave the app and go back into it. I seen the other reviews for this and for months the company replies saying they are on the issues. Yea I doubt it... FIX YOUR APP!!!

Garbage. The question is, what are you waiting to update the app ?? I have the system for almost 4 years already and there were always problems with the remote view of the cameras. At home with my own wifi always work or at least 99% of the time but if I was away sometimes works and sometimes not, but now is no way you can make it work..I called the customer service and after being working for an hour doing the same thing over and over again the representative just “throw the towel” and told me that engineers have to something with the app because they’re having my kind of phone calls every single minute and till now no way to fix it. The representative was so nice and definitely she tried to help me in all the different ways she can, but if the “masterminds” don’t update the app will be no solution.. I don’t want a surveillance system that I can watch only if I’m home.. It’s a shame that you bought a system for $400 and 4 years later you have to throw it away. Never a Night Owl product again..👎👎👎

Good cameras, horrible app. I wish I would’ve researched 5e reviews on the night owl apps prior to purchasing the system from Costco. The reviews on the system were very good, so I purchased, installed, tested, etc. You have to download multiple apps if you want access on your phone and your MAC or tablet. Both night owl apps are terrible, very slow and dysfunctional. Luckily I purchased from Costco, as I will be removing all of the wiring and cameras and returning them. I would strongly encourage people to check out the apps prior to purchasing the systems. I will never buy anything related to Night owl again, given how horrible both of their apps are.

App Needs Improvement. The camera system is pretty good.... The app on the other hand not so good. The notifications only work sometimes. The videos you save can’t be sent in a text on the iPhone. When viewing live video the app doesn’t keep the phone from going to sleep, if you want to continue viewing you have to manually turn that off in the iPhone settings. Would be nice if you could also set the cameras to always come up in HD mode instead having to change it every time you open the app. When you do get notifications it doesn’t tell you which camera had the alarm then when you swipe to open the notifications it just sits and spins nothing ever opens.

BeSafe. I love Night Owl. And here's my review, written on June 16, 2017: I wrote a review about two days ago but I do not see it anymore. I wanted to say that I had a problem a few days ago where I felt that I needed to delete the app in order to resolve the problem. But deleting the app did not resolve the problem. In any case, the app is now working for me. I was very happy that the developer was conscientious and had the insight to get involved and resolve my problem even without my having to call Night Owl directly. Very good job. If I could find the words to express how I feel about that without sounding all mushy, I would do it right here. Thanks again Night Owl. You're great!

Terrible. I just bought this system last 1 week ago and it has its advantages and disadvantages. But the main reason why I bought them was to see from each door we have. It seems to always happen at night when the box goes down all of a sudden and I can not see the front door camarera with the app....mater of fact I can no see any camarera with the app at night! During the Day I have my TV on and watch the cameras from their but beside that I can’t see it either way! System is a little pricy would be nice if they would take the time to fix the app! Might just return the product tomorrow since it does me no good! I keep receiving notifications about “motion detection” mainly at night but the camarera will NOT load! During the Day I have also noticed that it does not send an alert for the motion detection. I can see the cameras but just no alert is sent to my phone.

What’s going on here. The whole point of a security camera is to be able to view the going ons around your house. I liked the fact that the app allowed me to do that even while on vacation but for the last few days when away from the house I cannot connect the app attempts to do what is required I think but goes straight to disconnect. Why is this happening and are you planning on fixing it cause based on other reviews I guess I can answer my own question with a resounding NO and that is disappointing. I saved up to get what I thought was a decent system and the part that I really like about it doesn’t work correctly.

the worst camera app. the worst camera app with the worst service the app practically doesn't work it's always offline it takes time to connect and every time you go out to do anything on your phone and return to the camera app not only is it offline but it also knows It takes a long time to connect and 90% of the time it does not connect if you have to see the camera fast for emergency to see what is happening outside your house by the time is connect , if you do, the emergency was over, please do not spend your money in crap. it's so bad that giving it one star is too much.

Not so great now. System worked flawlessly for a year then came some hiccups. Started out I would get a notification to my phone but when I clicked on it nothing it would just sit there churning away. I finally found I could hit stop then play again and I would see video. Then it just stopped sending notifications altogether. I have tried everything reset defaults reloaded nothing left but throw the whole thing in the trash. I see this has been a issue for quite a while for several other people who have reviews here. They say they are working on the problem but you can see by some of the older reviews it has been going on for awhile. Very frustrating

Lagging. Please update this app ASAP playback recording takes forever or might not load as it keeps spinning. The only way to by pass that is hitting stop button twice and then play , but the should have to get technical at all i should just press play and relax. Also about every other day my cameras say their disconnected even tho every cameras still working. Only way to by pass that is un plugging and plugging power back on . Again i shouldn't have to get technical i should just press play and relax . On another note if it glitches so much whats the purpose of having surveillance i could imagine being in Hawaii a thief comes and gets away with a robbery because you couldn't go home or tell a neighborhood to disconnect and reconnect you box i like night owl but i dont like the way the app works so please fix this issue so i can give you 5 stars . For now your only getting two.

Never should’ve updated to the new version. I had the previous version 3.0, it worked great, it connected remotely every time I was away whenever I needed to use the app. Now this new version I just updated to 4.0, it crashes and doesn’t let me connect at all, when I am remotely away. When it does let me log in and connect, it doesn’t save your camera locations in live view. I have to select it every time and it annoying. The last version didn’t have this issue and was addressed from previous version(2.0) now we have to go back and address this issue again? Please Night Owl, let me go back to the previous version (3.0) please

Would give Zero stars if I could.... The HD cameras on the Night Owl system look and work great. But this review is for the App which does not give me remote access to see my camera displays. This is a priority function needed for a home security camera system, and one promised on purchase of this system. I have 8 cameras installed professionally around my house but can only view the camera feed from my home. This is a gaping hole in the expected security standard I thought installing these cameras would provide. What a shame. This app never has worked properly no matter how many times I have gone through the setup wizard, re-downloaded the app and completely reboot the system. I think it’s time customer service reaches out with a solution and/or provides options/reimbursement for a rather expensive cost of installation and setup.

Horrible App. When my husband and I bought and installed the Night Owl cameras, the app worked well on our apple devices. Once the iPhone 8 and the OIS software came out, we could no longer open the app. Every time I got an notification, the app would act like it was opening then shut down. In order for me to see anything I would have to go through my internet browser. So I got rid of the iPhone app because it no longer serve a purpose. So now in order to watch what our cameras have recorded or view in live view, we have to go to our desktop or our television. What a shame. Wished we had waited and got the cameras with our ring doorbell.

Needs updated badly. Every time you open the app you must go to device, choose your device, then go back to live view to view the device. We have two setups, but ideally we would have an option to default to one setup regularly. We've done the recent firmware update and that doesn't resolve his bug. They need a programmer to fix this... Unfortunately we're going to return our second system and try a different option to see if we can find a functional app....we just spent another 400$ on this hardware thru Costco...it should fully work...

Zero Stars. Terrible app...even worse customer service. Called over a week ago about app not working and they told me it has been down for a few hours and that their techs were working very hard to correct the issue. It’s a week later now and apparently their techs stopped trying because still nothing. Good luck calling this company. First you are calling somewhere in India, secondly they make you wait over an hour before they take your call, then then don’t understand a word you say to them. “I don’t understand” “I don’t understand” then they say “let me place you on hold” and then come back with “our systems crashed, sorry is there anything else I can help you with?” Then they conveniently disconnected me. Useless!!!

Update this app asap. In reading the reviews here I noticed a lot of complaints about this app being outdated and from a consumer stand point I can’t comprehend why such an irresponsible responses Night Owl is giving. I understand that newer wifi type digital systems are out and from your business stand it’s probably more lucrative for customers to migrate to newer systems, and apps that only work with your paid cloud service thus generating more profit for you. You have to honor and service each and every system you advertised and sold until they all literally die or there is no way to fix them. It’s very easy to advertise your product as a no-fee system and then as your financial goals change just “leave us hanging in the sun”.... Fix this app asap so our systems will continue working properly.

Camera live view. The camera love view after the most recent update is pretty much unusable. I used to be able to swipe back and fourth between the blank camera views and it would pop up. This no longer is the case. It won’t ever load unless you click on ‘device’ and then wait for the device to become available. Once it does you select it and then it connects but it defaults back the 6 camera view not the 4 camera view I had it on. From there the app works ok until you close it. Once you close it this song and dance starts all over. This recent update is horrible!!! Fix it!

Horrible camera system. Save your money and do not get this camera system when I try to view my cameras on my device it’s constantly coming off disconnected. When I do open the camera system off and it comes up it takes forever for the actual picture to show up by then it is too late. Buy a camera system worth your money just don’t by this camera system. For example when I hear a noise outside I pull up my camera system to see if there is anything going on to where I need to call 911 rather than going to my door by the time the pictures show up on the camera everything is over and I could’ve went outside to look myself and jeopardize my safety. I plan on buying a new camera system and throwing this one in the trash where it belongs so don’t buy this camera system where you will be doing the same thing that I am going through it is not worth it.

Needs an upgrade!. The cameras are pretty good, they work as they are supposed to. but the app is quite the opposite. connects when it wants to.(even though it always have internet connection) app crashed often when trying to open the cameras on apple ios 12 using cellular data. Works fine with wifi. tried resetting phone, reinstalling app and the problem still persists. would be much better if the app was updated and all the bugs were fixed.

Good camera. The cameras software will need to be started over as new as you have the first day of purchase, if you start having trouble with the camera WiFi are cell phone data when you are trying to connect to see your cameras and view property. I notice that every time Power goes out you have to shut down Manually and unplug from the device not the plug to the outlet, then restart software manually, customers service was good as well, they tried helping me fix the problem so the 4 star is because I had to fix the connection issues.

FIRMWARE UPDATE REQUIRED!!!. The app works! You need to update firmware on receiver first. To do that, open main menu. Click on Advanced tab, then click on Auto Upgrade tab on the right. Then click Detect. That should find the latest firmware update and prompt you to install. After update is done, receiver should reboot and you should have to login with admin and password. Boom! Now you can connect to app! *Make sure device name is correct, though... you can check device name in Main Menu-System-Info.

Great system, mediocre app. The cameras and system were easy to install (I have a construction background and running wires through, attics, crawl spaces, and walls is easy) and the internet connection was easy to set up. Now.....the instructions in the app that tell you how to set up recording, alarms, phone notifications, remote playback, etc....those are terrible. There are a ton of grammar errors(English was not likely the tech writer's primary language), so it takes a long time to understand that a lot of the instructions are poor or missing. I honestly can't even figure out how to change the time stamp displayed on the video feeds....I feel like I'll eventually be able to use this whole system and it's features, but I'll have to figure it out on my own. One review was right...download the app and explore it before buying this system or any system.

Waste of time and money. I bought and installed this system so I could keep an eye on my second home 250 miles away from where I live . Cameras work ok , but app is pure junk. Initial set up and motion detection activated constantly. Went back into the set up and moved motion select to medium hit ok and that was the last time I received any notifications of motion alerts. Call support and spend a good deal of time with nothing changed . I wanted to factory reset it , but I can not find out how to do that. Video that is captured when motion is supposed to have happened shows nothing I have given up on trying to get this system to work. Wish I had never bought this system but to late to take it and get my money back. Believe me I would not recommend this system to anyone

Good at start. When we first got the product it worked as it was supposed to and was great peace of mind was there. Since one of their updates nothing as far as the remote view has work. Like many other people we just want to have the security of checking in and seeing without having to walk around the property. Work well other than remote viewing those the two, but main reason for getting was the ability of remote viewing. After working to the service reps found out the updated there software now the monitor won't even work. Don't buy

Horrible - looking for an alternative app!. Where to start! The app is horrible, connection almost never works. Called support to confirm ports are correct and was told my network connection is "horrible" 75mbs down and 20mbs upload. Ya okay my network is horrible. What's horrible is the app crashes constantly, hardly loads all 12 of my camera, even loading one camera the app doesn't load the view. Configuring the DDNS was a separate issue alone. Support never acknowledged the issue was on there end until 4 calls later and hours of wasted time. Get some better developers update the app to be compatible with the latest iOS.

Okay system - Bad app. System is ok. A week ago my cameras were not switching out to night vision. Before that, the cameras had horizontal lines. Then they just died. Found out the root cause of it all is the power cable. Cameras should be wide angle. For the money customers pay, the small angle really is not useful. NOW, the app. I had issues since I bought my system. 7 out of 10 times I cannot connect remotely (feature you market). I seem to get that red circle icon on my device icon either in the LIVE VIEW or DEVICE MANAGER. It happens when I am on my cellular connection or on another wifi connection away from home. Also, even at home, if something is heard on any prt of my house outside and want to see it quickly, I am not able to do it because the app does not give me a rapid image. It has to load or fix the red icon issue. Paying high dollar for a system like this now seems very messed up. I cannot justify this expense with these features. Enhance your app and angles on your cams. Good luck guys!

Great system with excellent stability. I’ve been using Nightowl systems for close to 10 years. They just keep getting better! Their Mobile app has greatly improved its loading speed and stability. It actually works great. You can immediately record as you monitor and also take picture. I’ve done both with no issues from my office. The one feature I’d strongly wish they incorporate in later revisions is the ability to lock the displayed cameras so that the app opens to that locked prearranged display to avoid having to manually set them. GREAT PRODUCT!

Stop loading images after awhile!!!. The app worked okay at first. There was no major issue to complain except the app could be slow sometimes. It is pretty slow if I’m not in the signal range. But isn’t that the whole point of this app? To see what’s going on around your house when you’re somewhere else. Yet worse, now that whenever I try to open the app, it doesn’t even load the screens. I have to wait, turn off the app, then turn it back on, and pray for it to work properly if I’m lucky or the screens just stay black. This is so disappointing!!! Please fix the app! What is the point of setting up a camera system if I can’t even see what’s going on?

Night Owl HD needs to update ASAP. With the introduction of iOS13 my app is sluggish if it works at all. My husband and I both have the app but he hasn’t updated to the new iOS. And his phone can monitor all cameras perfectly as I could before the Apple update. You need to support all phone services. Yearly update comment I see tells me you’re not monitoring your product enough to support all WiFi changes for all devices dependent upon your security systems. Please put through a change to be able to view all camera aspects seamlessly as it was prior to last week’s Apple upgrade...PLEASE. My security depends on NightOwl being proactive!

Good enough. I still cannot load my cameras at startup. I click on ‘device’ and select mine then it works. App is not optimized for iPhone X. App always silences other audio apps, even though my cameras do not have microphones and doesn’t playback audio. I have 4 screens of 9 cameras but only have 8 cameras. I suppose I could use the other screens to ‘rearrange’ my camera setup. The ‘Help’ selection is not help, it’s a tutorial on using the app, it’s helpful but could benefit from a redesign. Need the ability to save video to iPhone ‘Photos’ app. Need better controls in playback. Need multi camera playback too, at least four cameras. Should be able to save video quality to HD. Especially when connected to WiFi, video quality should be HD. Playback controls should be reorganized in order. Such as: previous clip, rewind/reverse (by the way it just slows down the video), play, pause, slow motion, fast forward, next clip. Remove ‘audio’ if cameras don’t support audio. Remove PTZ if it’s not available. In portrait mode, set camera screens to widescreen format. There, now you don’t need to figure out what to fix or how to.

The camera system hardware is okay, the app is atrocious.. I am having the same issues over the years much like everyone else. I’ve had the hardware for several years now. It is an adequate system, but you will be replacing the external power supply for the cameras about every 18 months. But the app is a whole other store. It borders on useless most days. It disconnects from the cameras / system constantly. About every 45 days you will surely have to uninstall and then reinstall everything. It will notify you of movement when no one is there but not allow you access to the cameras so you will be hopping in your car for frequent visits unless you have another security system in place. This has been my experience over the last several years. That is why I am sitting in my office on Christmas Day writing this review. The system is crapped out again. 🤬

App is not good. Cameras and hard drive is a good system for the money. The app......not so much. Same complaint as majority of the previous reviews whereas you get notifications about motion but when you go to see what the motion is, it says your device is disconnected so you can see any of the camera views. I saw one of the tech supports response saying that too many devices connected to the WiFi but I ran a dedicated cable and router for this device and I still can’t see the camera views from my phone. Hoping with everyone working from home with covid the developer could figure the issues out but it doesn’t seem that way.

Push notifications. Generally the app works well but the push notifications have not worked in weeks. Tech support says they are working on a fix but may not see it for a while...

Terrible. I have had my system for a few years now and at the beginning everything was working great. I could always check in on the app. Over the last 2 years it rarely (once every few months) works. It either saying connecting or disconnected. I’ve tried unplugging and rebooting the system, changing internet cables and even upgraded our internet to see if that was the problem. I have tried everything and it just won’t stay on. Last time I unplugged the unit, waited, plugged it back in and it worked, for a few days and now again it won’t work at all. As previous people have said we have spent a lot of money and time setting this system up and forever trying to get it to work. Once the weather is nice I am ripping the entire system out and replacing it with another brand. I will NEVER use or recommend this system/brand to anyone. In fact I will happily tell anyone who is considering purchasing a security system to not even look at this brand. I am not one to write bad reviews but this has been an absolute nightmare for 2 years. If it wasn’t such a hassle to install a new system, I would have changed it 2 years ago. It’s pretty bad when you look up things online to help with the problem and it’s just one bad review after another. Just terrible.

Doesn't work anymore. Title says it all. This worked fine when I first set up, although I always had to close/reopen app and reselect device whenever reopening. Now it is just trying to connect.....but it never does. UPDATE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Full of connectivity issues!. First, the app stopped sending notification. Later, it stopped doing remote playback. Now, the live view is not working either. All expensive hardware is useless as there is no access to the recordings!!!

Needs some work. This app needs some work. Connections are flakey at best, and when a disconnect occurs, you often need to close down the app and restart. Terrible!!!!. I have this Night Owl camera system for over 2 years now! I already regret many times that I purchased it and did not listen those bed reviews. I thought that for over $300 dollars camera system can not be that bed! But I was wrong. The setup is not easy a spend installing hardware a lot of time to get it right and now it’s not working as it should be! I used to have notifications and for last 2 months they stop working! Disconnecting from my phone ALL the time! I have to disconnect the hard drive manually from the power and turn on again if I want to see it on my phone almost every day. Can some one fix it for once and all!!! We paid good money for the system that I want to work! Please, please fix it.

Works, but.... Every time I launch the app, I have to re-connect it to the device, and re-select the 4 camera view (instead of the 9 cam, even though I only have 4 attached.) Why can't it remember these basic settings? Otherwise, remote playback and 1080 live streaming are nice.

Can still see cameras but not notifications. This system was a god send last summer when I was away. The area I live has bad internet but I could receive notifications when I was in Thailand to stop a break. I’m setting it up for this holiday and when I turn push notifications on and walk past all the cameras, nothing gets sent to my phone?! 😥

Just purchased the security system and was excited about this app. Unfortunately the app crashes a lot, needs to be restarted to see camera and for some reason the notification setting gets turned off for no reason. Remote Viewing Doesn’t Work!!. I instead a UPS and verified the IP address but as soon as I leave my home network I can never, ever, ever view my live feed. What good is a camera system if I cannot view it when I leave? If I’m home, I don’t need it! All it ever says is “Connecting..,” “ Connecting...”... but it never does. I’ve done the “Scan” setup so many times that I lost count. Then I started connecting to the IP address... it’s all the same. Terrible system. Do not buy it if you want to watch your property while away. It doesn’t work. Period.

20 X wired system. I Purchased this system about 2.5 months ago. I just got installed my camera views are really good. I have one problem cant get my cameras to show up on my phone like the product was advertised. What really is alarming can’t seem to find anything about what causes that problem nor can I seem to be able to get help from Night Owl. If I would have known wouldn’t have purchased. I would have purchased another. The main reason I purchased was to be able to monitor from my phone. Not very happy at all.

App is disappointing. The camera and system are great, no complaints. The app is terrible. It’s great at sending you notifications, but you can only see the video on rare occasions. Some times it works for a week, and then just quits. You will click on the alert, and then... the app opens but it never shows video. Usually it shows the device is not connected. But it will continue to send you notifications. Guaranteed to let you down when you need it most. Do not buy this system if you want to remote view reliably.

Glitchy connectivity and functions. Some times it works- most times the app features do not. Interrupting power (unplugging and replugging) the camera system can help. Of course, that’s not helpful when you need to access the video remotely. I tried reinstalling the app - don’t make the same mistake I did! I just lost all saved videos and photos but had the same issues connecting remotely. No option to even choose which camera I want to playback and not many options to fiddle with resetting the app. It’s good when it works

Total Waste of Time and Money. I purchased this system without reading the reviews because Costco usually has quality products. Big mistake! Mobile app was glitchy at best in the beginning, now it won’t connect at all. Someone came and slashed my daughters tires during the night and the “motion sensors” didn’t even pick it up and I have one of the cameras pointed directly at her car! The cameras only pick up about 50% of the activity at best. All I purchased was a headache and a temporary false sense of security. If that’s what you’re looking for then this system is for you!

Cameras are good but App not reliable. Cameras are good. App on the other hand is terrible. I came back here checking if there had ever been an update or if maybe I had missed it because the quality of the app isnt good at all. Each time I need to check whats going on outside I have to go to Device Manager and reconnect which takes about thirty seconds . Then I go to Live View and wait for the cameras to load. The process makes this app super unreliable. You should be able to view your cameras instantly as needed.

Works great!!. I love this app it works great even when Im away from my home. First, you have to install it properly. If you don't know how to set it up seek a professional. Second, you can call always call customer service and they will gladly assist you. Lastly, I feel more secure now that I have the night owl monitoring my home!

Horrible Service!. Alerts don't work at all. Opening the app doesn't automatically turn on live view when you click on it, have to click each one to open if it works. Have to constantly reboot system to see if that helps which doesn't last long. There has been a few robberies in the neighborhood and I always wonder when I leave what will I come home too since this doesn't work. Looking for another system but will do my research first.

Still waiting. I needed to get the password reset so they sent me two of them that were good for conservative days. The password per Night Owl has to have eight characters. Each of these passwords sent to me were six characters in lengthen. So obviously they didn’t work. Called help desk was put on hold for 45 minutes. Called again put in my phone so they would call me. Over a week........ still waiting for that call. System still not up. Going to buy from a more reputable company.

Zero stars.... This app never works. Can’t bring up camera view and it never remembers my settings. Always shows disconnected when I start it up. Security system in general was tough to set up, came with the wrong firmware and couldn’t get the mouse or keyboard to work because it needed the firmware update to work properly! Stay away from this system, save your money. I’ve spent more time messing with this system to get it to work than I have been able to view actual video footage.

Previous systems appear to be better. So this new system records in two minutes increments. When viewing in the phone app you cannot fast forward or rewind, you have to watch the whole two minute movie in one shot. I wish this was not the case, sometimes you want to review snippets over and over. Also the wireless cameras have bad connection issues, and when trying to review from a wireless camera it is a 70 % failure.

Needs to be updated. **UPDATED RESPONSE** So, it seems everyone keeps getting some variation of the same generic response from the developers. “We are working to fix the problem”. Well, It’s been Over a year since the last app update. You’ve had plenty of time. Every single person on here has now wasted their money on a camera system that either quit working altogether or stopped sending out critical notifications. We are all frustrated. We all have one question for these developers. “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX IT? WHEN???” ******************** Once iPhone was updated to the latest version, app stopped sending notifications. It also seems to have stopped recording, as I try to go back and view a specific timeframe (after the iPhone update), it states that “no video was recorded”. Grrrrr. What good is the system and app, if it doesn’t notify you and let you play anything back? PLEASE UPDATE AND FIX BUGS!

Notifications stopped working. I bought night owl system so I could be notified if someone is around my house when I’m not home. But after a year and a half the system stopped sending out notifications. Now the system is useless unless I check it manually. Called up help line and they said they would look into it. That is as far as that got. So much for the help. So what do you do buy another system. I doubt it. To bad because it was a good system when it worked. Would not recommend.

Total garbage app. Get anything else is my suggestion Hate that I went with this system as it’s the worst possible and most inconvenient app you can imagine. Most of the time it doesn’t work, or it closes when you try to use the app to playback a recording…or it might not connect for no reason at all. Doesn’t work over cellular, servers are down. The app only works while connected to WiFi. I can’t use it while on LTE. The app just crashes every time I try to launch it. When I connect to wifi, the app works. Please fix this! I haven’t been able to view my cameras since last week because the P2P servers are down, both night owl apps I have give me an offline message for my recorders which are connected to my network and working perfectly fine connecting to it via LAN.

Needs better UI and an update. Please fix the UI, it’s not at all intuitive nor does it make sense. Why do I have to exit out of live view to do a playback? Also why can’t multiple cameras play back at once? Please these are fundamental features. I’m considering getting a new security camera because the software development for this is terrible. Also when selecting time for play back rewind doesn’t work (it only slows it down) and think about using an clock input, scrolling is a terrible way to get accurate time for playback.

App works great. Have had my system for a year and a half love it and the great picture it provides. Have had no issues with the app works great. Next update please make it so the screen doesn’t turn off while live viewing or watching recording.

Here is an honest review.... Bought the nigh owl Hd 1080p 8 cameras from Costco($400 +tax) . If it were for Costco concierge this App would be a 5 stars, because they are terrific on helping you setting this thing up. But app would need a little bit of work/ updates... Easy to setup on smartphones. like i said it's kind of slow to upload at times . But still better than 3 previous camera system that I've tried in 3 weeks time frame...

Nite owl is great. I’ve been using night I’ll I will for the last eight years. I could be in Nevada, California and I can still see my home is the easiest set up you can get but if you have bad Internet you won’t get anything it’s not because now it’s because of the Internet night owl is good I even have a swan 360 camera hooked to it

App rarely works. Camera hard wired system works well. App rarely allows you to stream cameras. If you are depending on that feature, look elsewhere. Update 12/31. Developer apologized and asked for patience after my last review. That was 3 months ago. App still doesn’t work with brand new phone, updated software.....etc. I was going to add another one of these systems, but I’m switching companies. It just plain doesn’t work. And as a small business owner, I need it to work all the time.

Worst app ever. Only reason it’s getting 1 Star is because I can’t go any lower. This app literally never works on my phone. Had the camera system for over 2 years. And it’s worked on my phone maybe 2 times. Always says disconnected. I’ve restarted the system. Deleted the app, logged out. Literally everything short of buying a different system. If I can save anyone else the hassle go a different route with a camera system. This is by far the worst I’ve ever had... and I’ve had 3. Vivnt is a great one may have to switch back unless they fix the issue on the phone.

Cameras work - app not so much. I have to unplug the unit at least three times a week. When I open the app and click on live view and then device it never connects. This happens when I’m on WiFi and off WiFi. Very frustrating when I hear bumps at night outside and the app just says connecting without ever connecting. I have to crawl out of bed and unplug it just so I can see what’s going on outside.

No push notifications. This problem has happened “several times in the past”. It’s a problem on their end. My phone is not notifying me when motion is detected. The only thing technical support says is that it has been escalated to level 2. Now my ticket has been escalated to engineer level. They said that they have tons of customers who are complaining about the same thing. DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM, RETURN IT. Garbage system Update: It’s 2021 and I still own the system. Same problem as before. Will now definitely get rid of this garbage. I’m shopping around

Dead app. It’s not as if the app works sometimes and other times it doesn’t, which would be very bad, too. But this app is totally dead. It simply does not work. It will not even open. I’ve reported this dead app multiple times. The developer responds that it’s been fixed. But it has not been fixed. It’s still dead. This seems to be a common response to many complaints in the reviews. Don’t believe it. A security camera system without an app is practically useless.

Night owl no longer supports its product. I can’t see myself upgrading and buying a new Night Owl. I have had this device a few years now and Night Owl will no longer support their product. Since I’ve had this device, I have had to call tech support for various issues several times, but now they are not supporting their product. The manual is not very in-depth enough for my particular issue so I guess I will have to try another brand of security camera.

Needs serious work. Something about your app or system is seriously wrong! If you open the app and hit live view you should see your cameras, first time and every-time and quickly, but instead they NEVER are there, i have to try to get them to view by changing views 2 or 3 times and sometimes that dont even work and i have to reassign camera! I thought night owl was a big enough name you wouldnt have these kinds if problems! Seems like i bought a $99 system and not a $300 that it cost, very sad and very lame!

No notifications. I have waited over two months before leaving this review. Probably should leave it somewhere else, because if you are reading this in the app review you already purchased a system. System hardware works great however the system stopped sending notifications over 2 months ago. Contacted tech support and they said many are experiencing the similar thing and are working on it. That has been 2 months ago. Great system if you don’t need to be alerted to someone getting ready to break in your house!

I should've looked at these reviews before buying the system. If I would've checked these reviews, I would've gotten a different system. I constantly have to reboot my system, delete and reinstall the app on my phone. I get alerts but cannot access the cameras because the system is "disconnected." What is the point of having mobile "access" to my camera system when I can't access anything. I really should start a class action lawsuit against night owl because they haven't improved anything although it is promised in the app description.

Long standing issue.... 1) On iPhone, the camera view is black when one switches to another app and then back again,... requiring one to swipe back and forth to another page just to update the views. This should automatically occur when the app becomes the active one. 2) Also, the connection is lost frequently for no apparent reason.

No activity recorded. I had one of the cameras setup to view activity at the backyard shed. One day, I was back there for about 30 minutes. When I later viewed the camera footage, there was NO ACTIVITY RECORDED. When I went to the time of the activity, it showed a picture of the shed with no activity and it skipped past the time that the activity occurred still showing the same picture of the shed. Anything could have happened and it was not picked up or recorded. Sometimes the cameras are unreliable.

Update. The app has not had an update in 2 years and needs it. Half the time my app doesn’t even connect to my device so I can not view any of my cameras. If I don’t see an update soon then I am going to be forced to trash the system and purchase a different brand of cameras. This is an ongoing issue the video doesn’t load but there is audio and no matter what I can’t get the video to come back. This system needs a major upgrade....I am contemplating buying a whole new system with a different company

System is good. App is garbage. I spent $700 on my camera system, which means I expect to be able to view my cameras remotely. The cameras are great, but the app is COMPLETE GARBAGE. I can only view playback or HD lib view when I’m connected to my Wi-Fi network at home. When I’m away from my home, even if I’m still on a Wi-Fi network, playback WILL NOT WORK! Nor will HD live view. Sometimes live view doesn’t work at all. It’s very discouraging. The motion notifications come through no problem. But I can’t check if the motion is someone breaking into my house or not!!! Might as well not even have the system.... THIS APP ALONE WILL PREVENT ME FROM EVER BUYING NIGHT OWL AGAIN!

Works pretty well. Like the app, works pretty good. Only thing I hate is that you have to keep reconnecting to your device. If you close the app out and then hear something outside it takes too long to open and connect to the camera. You have to open it, click live, click device, tap your device then it loads the cameras. It’s quicker go over and look at the monitor. Should stay connected or connect automatically to the device that was last selected.

Can’t connect remotely. Seems like I’m having the same issue as a lot of other people on here, for the last month I can’t connect to my cameras remotely on my phone, the only time they will pull up is on WiFi. Called tech support and they blamed it on poor upload speed (they say app needs more than 4mbps upload speed) I have 9mbps currently and have had over 20mbps and it still won’t pull up. Worst customer service I’ve ever dealt with, spend your money else where

If 0 was an option 0 it would be. Worst ever!! The app is horrible the systems horrible! My app never works always says “disconnect” or “disconnected” literally always something wrong with it! Clarity is horrible, customer service must hate their lives because they’re some of the rudest people I’ve ever talked to on my entire life!! Do NOT waste your money time data or storage on this piece of garbage! I hate it! No wonder the people that I bought my house from wanted to leave it! I’ve had multiple break ins and nothing!!! Nothing even on record.

Update struggles. In the last couple of weeks the app has not connected while I was out of town. Frustrating when your trying to check if things have been moved inside by neighbors or delivered to notify neighbors. Plus, now that it's working and I'm home, it's crashing and won't load up all the cameras. I still love the app and the program, I'm just frustrated with not being able to scroll through cameras.

Terrible app. The web page for viewing on the computer is okay. But not very portable. So you turn to the app. When I try to playback video. It might play for a few seconds than it appears to be ok super fast forward. I can watch minutes go by in a second. And this is video that I can view on the device, but it won’t let me export it there. But the iOS app is absolute garbage. 9/10 times I open and 10 seconds later it crashes and I have to start all over again. And the fact I can’t review video on the phone reliably.

You get what you paid for.. When I purchased this product it was like a piece of mind but it turned out to be a nightmare. It stoped recording at night. When you are on the road and you click on the app, it never connects to the camera system so you can check your home. I called the company and the first person did not know what to do. When I called again I spoke with a female and I explained to her what was happening and she said sorry you are stuck with this and she cannot do nothing and hung up. I calle a friend of mine who specializes in security and he told me that this is a cheap camera system. I wish I can go back and get more feedback. My recommendation is to save money and get a better quality camera and do a lot of research. I wish I could of give this junk a zero star. It does not deserve a one star.

2 years. I like the camareras but the app needs improvement. It seems I’m not the only one have the same problem since there is another review with the same issue that I’m having. Every time I open the app, it says my device is disconnected however I have to press saved several times to get them connected and view my live cameras. This is no good! PLEASE TRY TO FIX THE APP. Also another complained, some days I get notified for any movements but there are days that I don’t get no notifications.. and trust me there are movements

Don’t waste your money. This app is garbage. It’s 2020 and it should be way more advanced. The only consistent thing about this app is that it crashes. Most of the commands don’t work. We had a robbery at an elderly mans house down the street. Our area is one way in and one way out. My camera that was pointed at the road didn’t pick up the two white vans that did the robbery that HAD to drive right in front of my house to leave. You would have better luck trying ANY other camera. The developer hasn’t updated the app in TWO YEARS!!!!!! My one star is generous. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Never buy these products. If I could go back in time, I would travel to the point when I purchased these terrible cheap cameras and spend the money on good quality ones. The app is constantly crashing on a brand new iPhone and brand new Samsung. Hard to run a business when you can not rely on seeing the visuals on camera. I ended up throwing away you’re cameras and bought Samsung ones. You guys should really up you’re tech especially on the app where millions of users depend on it. Again thank you for teaching me that cheaper isn’t always better. Peace

Not happy. About to give up on this company and your product. Can’t get any better if you don’t actually do some engineering to the app and actually give everyone the update it needs to work properly. Looks like you been feeding the same crap to everyone and I’m no buying that. Invest money into the update so you can keep your customers! Word of mouth is how I heard of y’all, I promise my words aren’t going to be positive anymore, I will point people away from your equipment every chance I get. Fix it now please!

Doesn't connect to the receiver. It worked for a few days after installing the app.. it often crashes or worse, it doesn't connect to the receiver.. so it's useless to me.. Update... I contacted customer service and they walked me through the process and ever since my app always connects with the receiver.. so my advice to y'all is to contact the customer service desk, so that they can walk you through the set up..

App not working. I don’t know what you all did but something happened to the app and the app is not working on 5G network it will only work on my Wi-Fi system please update as soon as possible not able to connect from away from home ????

Can’t access view from app. More times than not I can’t open a view remotely from my phone. The system itself seems to work well but I really need to be able to get a view when I am away from home. Most times the app won’t open the cameras or connect to the devise. And when I do get a connection I often have to add each camera to the view manually. I am thinking of getting a whole new system because of this unreliable view.

Night owl app. This app is pure trash make you want to get rid of the night Owl altogether and go with the Lorex or something better For as long as this item has been on the market you feel they would have updated this problems already I don’t see them in market too much longer I don’t even see them on shelves at the stores that I usually shop anymore other name brands have popped up and showing better ratings if there’s no fix for this soon I will absolutely be getting out of their brand

Setup was easier than expected.. I don’t know but the reviews almost made not buy the system but it turned out really great setup was smooth I’m tech savvy so maybe that helped but thanks night owl for the system and oh love the no subscription part hate that bout other cameras just update to the iPhone X Screen and I’ll be good

Unreliable App, but good cameras. Edited: I restarted the whole system and the app is working much better. Not sure if they fixed the issue I was having, but so far so good. Old issue: I do like the camera system, but the app is unreliable. Often times I open it up, I can't even see my cameras even when I have great cell reception. Other times I can. I hope they update their app, and put a little more thought and effort into it.

App keeps crashing, no update in sight.. I’ve been using this app for 2 years with my business and home. When I first purchased my cameras, this app worked beautifully. Didn’t have a single issue with anything. Nothing has changed with either my home or business, but yet the camera recording now plays at almost Stop Motion speed. And that is if my app doesn’t crash loading my feeds. Every single time the app crashes, it won’t even allow itself to open the main menu again after resetting it. I love the camera hardwhere, but this app needs some serious TLC.
