Best app!!!!. This is the best app I would never use anything else. It gives you accurate definitions or synonyms or whatever you need for FREE!!!! If your like me and you like things for free then you’ll definitely like this app! This app has everything you need from definitions, synonyms, word of the day, and even they have a brown challenging game. This app is so fun in many different ways but also extremely educational. (This is my first time ever writing a review I usually just put how many starts I think would fit that app but I’m glad that my first time writing a review was used on an amazing app.)

It’s enlightened me. I have used this app now for about 5+ years and continue to learn more words and the meaning of words helping me to expand my vocabulary. I love words within words and learning about people in history. However, like some have said when you go back to the main page it takes you back to the top then you have to scroll back down to continue. I think it could be tweaked to be more user friendly other than that I LOVE IT!

Recommended but the above-average flashcard could be much better..... I love the app, it’s games and its educational purpose. The developers don’t want this to be only a reference app but to also have pedagogical components, thus its vocabulary-building games, etc. Kudos! That’s why the I desperately wish the developers would enhance the flashcard feature, which could be a more powerful education feature of the app if some greater flexibility was programmed into it. Currently, you can create only one flashcard for a word and assign only one definition to a word. Some words have many definitions, of course, and can function as different parts of speech. For instance, one should be be able to create a flashcard for “articulate (adjective)” and another for “articulate (verb)” — one should be able to edit the word shown, too, so that one can add to it cues such as “(verb)” or “(definition 1),” etc. Also, the definition character/word limit is too low, so you can’t, for instance, copy and paste additional definitions into the card in an attempt to get around the only-one-card-per-word, only-one-definition-per-word limitation.

Great for Translation. Because anyone who knows knows that translation can’t be done by AI. Language is so nuanced. Do your best when trying to speak a language, but don’t stress. Wondering about a concept or word you want to use? Look it up here! Slower than copy-paste sentences, but you’ll be much better off this way. For example, “key” in English can mean several things. In Spanish you might use clave, llave… depending on what sort of key you mean.

An excellent app for definition, origin, and regional usage. The app provides the various regions where a word is used. The app seems to draw definitions from various sources so one gets a better understanding of a particular word and how it should be used. If a certain word can have similar meanings in other disciplines it distinguishes it by indicating that that particular definition comes from a medical dictionary, etc. There is also a translation function that tells you the Spanish counterpart. I’m sure there are other languages available. This proves useful if you happen to be bilingual. The dictionary requires access to the internet. There might be a premium edition that allows one to download various dictionaries on your device. I believe there is a screen that allows one to play various word games to increase one’s vocabulary. There is also of course the standard “Word of the Day”. It’s an excellent app that I find both enjoyable and useful. It’s an app that one must have if one enjoys the origin and etymology of words

Why I Like This App. First and foremost, I cannot believe we get so much more than any other dictionary app I have come across over the years, and it is free! Take time to read the apps review of their product and you will be amazed at the seemingly never-ending information at one’s fingertip. If you are the least bit grammar illiterate like I am, this is the Dictionary App for you! Thank-you Fairlex.

A huge thanks!. I do feel sorry for not having the ability to give as much appreciation and attention to this app as I would like. I look forward to using Dictionary everyday and find myself rather down when I don’t have internet access. Yes, it advertises offline availability, though unfortunately, I’ve never been able to utilize it for some reason it just won’t load for me. Aside from that, When I am able to use Dictionary, I’m on it sometimes for hours at a time, or I have it open in my recently used apps line up to be referenced, toggling back and forth when I need it. So again, many thanks to it’s developers.

Purchase Problems. I’m only giving one star because in spite of the high quality content of the Free Dictionary app itself, I spent money and was robbed because I was not able to keep my pro version, and so you get one star, and you will keep one star until you give me my pro version on all of my devices when I sign in with this email. I should retain my Pro version status on any device I sign in on. Not only that, I lost it right away on the very device I bought the Pro version on. I bought pro sometime ago, and right away I lost it. I don’t know what’s wrong with this app, this company or the coding, but I really don’t recommend you spending money on pro because you won’t be able to keep it. 🚨Update: I bought the Pro version a second time and it was taken away again; THIEVES. Don’t spend one red cent on this scam app. It calls itself the “Free Dictionary” so let it be free. 😤

A wonderful tool I’ve used for years!. I remember way back in the days when the App Store was in its infancy. The Merriam-Webster dictionary was one of the first five apps I ever downloaded and I was loyal to it for years! ... I somehow stumbled upon ‘the Free Dictionary.’ I think it took me about two weeks to fully convert into a loyalist to this app from them on! For one thing, all of the definitions I’ve ever come across are extremely thorough and as multi-faceted as necessitated. The ability to search multiple languages is fantastic and I think it’s wonderful that the language of origin is immediately identified in the search. It’s really a boon for the users who get the added benefit of learning links between cultures. I do not use the thesaurus very often* , but when I do, I’m always surprised by the quality of the suggestions as well as the nuances of the queried term. This is a wonderful app. Thinking about it now, I’m realizing I should spend more time playing around with it and meandering through the lexicon. My one complaint is that the words of the day are about as lame as can be - I don’t think I’ve seen one that would present a challenge to a second-grader, but there may be a way to adjust that. Get this app!

Most words I research are contained within this site.... However, occasionally I will have to resort to another dictionary to find the word I need. What I like about this site: Definitions from several sources are given: a helpful feature. Often word origins are included. Common foreign words/phrases are included. There are usage notes, usually when I need them! There is a thesaurus. Some proper nouns are included. There is an offline alternative and it is free. There are two text methods of pronunciation. There is an audio pronunciation feature and it is free. Having said that, the first two audio voices - American and British - accessed by the flag icons - frequently and laughably butcher pronunciations. Witness “ampoules,” which the Brit voice pronounces with an extra “l” as “amplool.” There are many more, and more extreme examples, but I’ve forgotten all of them (fortunately or, with my suggestible nature, I might be walking around sounding like an illiterate fool)! The male American voice, accessed by the speaker icon, is the most accurate. Obviously some thought and expertise were involved in his software. But I use the American and Brit pronunciations only if I want a good laugh, or, if I want to see how thoroughly a word might be mispronounced. Maybe you’d like to think about offing the Brit and the flag Yank! Nevertheless, Thank You for publishing this dictionary because, despite its flaws, it is my go-to dictionary, and I use it frequently. Tam

Truly unparalleled. I have moved this lovely, brilliant, and detailed piece of awesomeness known as The Free Dictionary to the home page of my iphone. It has helped me understand medical terms for so many of the medical studies on Lancet and etc I’ve read since covid began. I’m a preschool teacher rather than a medical professional. Also, non-medical words- there’s always the delicious etymology... multiple detailed entries. Truly I cannot say enough wonderful about this dictionary. $2 to remove ads? Worth it to thank the developers even if ads weren’t annoying. Thank you for making this app & for keeping it ios current!

WONDERFUL!!!!. This is an awesome tool to have at your fingertips! Words that we use everyday are explained in detail once you look them up. This is also a wonderful tool while reading my Bible. While studying, I look up words I thought I knew the meaning for and come to find out that they mean something totally different!! This in turn makes the Living Word come to life!! You first have to know what words mean in your own language then you can study the Bible languages. I also like the push notification with the word of the day. AWESOME!! May God bless you all!!

Only one downside. Good, definitions load quickly. I truly enjoy the app. Downside is if you don’t upgrade to “Ad Free”, the ads will pop up at the most inconvenient times, sometimes taking a few seconds or longer, (there are times that I had to close the app and then go back in to clear the ad before continuing with my word search. But otherwise I love the Free Dictionary been using it for years. Gives me not only the dictionary but also the thesaurus, Idioms, word games and other learning information.

Most Enlightening App !!!. I love this app. As an english lit student, I tend to come across words that are no longer in use or is not used as frequently, and that I need to know the meaning of in order to get a better understanding of what is being read. The Free Dictionary app is very, very useful in giving the meanings of such words. And even the era in which they were mostly used. And I simply love it!! Saves time and energy too!!

A 3 is being generous, still must use search engine. The app is pretty good generally, but when it comes to using or finding historically used vocabulary it is not so hot. And I have suddenly started having self correction take place even when I retype the word exactly the way I wanted to be spelled, sometimes two or three times… It’s very very annoying! End it just writing this review took some doing… One would think that the words “read type”and “vocab you Larry” would already be in your dictionary! But as you can read above that is not so. You still have quite a lot of bugs to fix. It was my understanding that modern electronic dictionaries had a learning process that was supposed to be intuitive, but it seems that I constantly run into the same errors of misprinting and poor dictation over and over again.

Best dictionary app. I've been using this app for years now I haven't found a better one yet. The use of examples along with the detailed thesaurus enable you to grasp the precise meaning of a word and it's accurate use in context. Not to mention the option to translate the word in several languages. Wikipedia resources are also available. I also like the motivational system they created to encourage you to learn more and feel proud of your progress. Soon I am going to upgrade to see what else can I get out of this app.

The best, but a big flaw. It’s a very good dictionary app, the best I could find online, but the main/home page is empty. I customized it in settings, yet it’s still blank. I can only use it as a dictionary, it could be just a glitch, but it’s been a few weeks now since I wasn’t able to use this app other than a simple dictionary, without any other features (word of the day, this day in history, todays birthday and all the word games) it could have.

I'm crazy in love with this app!!. Never in my life have I ever had so much fun with a dictionary app. It's so useful but also provides a variety of games and other activities that entertain and educate. My vocabulary has increased substantially in a meaningful way that helps me recall what I've learned. I recommend this app to everyone. I have been using this app for a long time now and never have gotten tired of it. It’s easy and fun to use. I recommend it to everyone. Try it, you’ll like it.

Too Easy to Buy Wrong Product, No Refund via Apple. Well there’s an ad-filled free version of this app, but you can upgrade to ad-free for $1.99. Only then was I presented with an offer to buy the Pro version (what I was looking for originally) for $3.99. I’d purchased the ad-free update for $1.99, so I requested a refund via Apple and purchased the Pro version for $3.99. Apple says no refund. I appealed the decision, stressing that I effectively bought the same product twice but will only use one. No joy. Apple and the developer are keeping both my $1.99 and $3.99 payments. This is the first and last product I buy from the developer.

Doesn’t work well. I’ve been using the word of the day notifications and tapping on the word launches the app but fails to bring up the definition. After I emailed them, I received a call claiming this would be fixed soon but it’s been months and no fix. That wouldn’t even matter much since the words are so easy that there’s rarely a need to look them up, but you’d think this basic functionality would be perfected by now. Deleting the app since it seems pretty useless to me. Don’t know what the competing free apps are like so I’ll give one a try.

Tracking is a big concern.. I purchased the paid version of this app some time ago. I liked the dictionary. However, I have become more cautious about the apps I use. Since I paid money for this app, I would have hoped the developers would not extract further “payment” by using my data to track me. However, since the developers are using data to track me, I have stopped using this app and am about to delete it. I hope the developers will reconsider their stance.

Omgness I'm so enjoying my My Dictionary. That's right I'm enjoying my Dictionary App, one of my reason are, because it help me so much with helping me pronounce the words more correctly. And if there is a word that I don't have to pleasure in pronouncing it correctly! My Dictionary audio App help me very much. We really don't need a hardcover Dictionary to search for definitions when it's on in. App! This Free Dictionary App is so convenient! We don't need to Carrier heavy Books when we have A apple App! I like it!!

Forced ads with sound while in seminar. The forced ads popped up. It had sound even the phone in silent mode. Could not skip the apps. Had to wait for 5s. WITH SOUNDS ON IN A SEMINAR. Horrible and embarrassing experience. Thefreedictionary is always my favorite website to looks up words. I was so happy when I could use this app. Until this terrible accident happened. I only want to look up vocabulary. You can show ads but without sound please! Don't you think people only use this app in their free time, not work time? SO DISAPPOINTED! Updated: Thanks for the quick response. I will keep an eye on this later and send you more information if I happen to come across same problem again. New update: The audio ads has been found and removed! Great job and prompt action!

Very good useful app but has some bugs. Thank you for this dictionary, I’ve been using it for a year or so. I like about it that it gives fully appropriate and numerous explanations for this or that word (even with pictures). The only thing as of now I dislike and feel inconvenience as follows: 1. When I’m switching from “Dictionary” to “Thesaurus” (on the bottom of the page) it returns me back to “Dictionary”. Some malfunction in the switching process. And then I need to do it second time (all the times), it is so annoying. 2. There is the first line with the word (I searched), sound icon and transcription. I don’t have any big fingertips but when I’m pressing the sound icon to hear the word it goes to another page because it seems accidentally I press on the transcription word (which is situated too close to the sound icon), I think it needs to be placed farther from each other. Please fix all these cons. Thank you!

App for Education. I love this app. It’s the most detailed and thorough app for expansive learning far beyond the meaning and origin of words. I’ve learned a lot about famous and infamous people and places of the world! The only thing is I wish there was a section that I could go backwards and reread information on a certain day, for example, I loved what I read four days ago and I’d like to be able to go back and read that page. Hell on that anyone?

Bookmarks Gone. Like the other person, I’ve also just lost all my bookmarks. I have had this app for years and never had any issues with this. So disappointed as I used this feature frequently. All of them are gone :( EDIT— it was indeed because I had gotten logged out. Updated my rating!

And here we go again.... I had just now gotten comfortable with using your Dictionary-Thesaurus app again after reporting gross profanity usage in the Thesaurus back in December 2017. I am again appalled after looking up another word and again the Thesaurus defines it with profanity. Seriously, what has happened with the English language in the 21st century. I looked up that same word using the Webster dictionary and it did not have the profanity. The dictionary section is great, I rate it with 5 stars, but the Thesaurus, minus zero stars. Shame, shame, shame on you.

Lack of important words and definitions that 'need' added to dictionary, right now.. The word or base word 'pan' as in *pandemic* is n o w h e r e in the Farlex dictionary app. I wondered why the majority of people in my country, the USA are so cavalier about not following basic, simple guidelines like wearing masks. No social distancing, gathering in hoards to join trump in his insanity reality rallies. So i started wondering if pandemic or it's base word PAN is even in the dictionaries for people to look up and maybe begin to understand the direness of this virus and what it actually means. It's not chicken pox, polio, this is new and we know next to nothing about it and I think it MUST be entered into every major dictionary immediately with an in depth definition of how all invasive it actually is. I hope you will consider this and your lon list of pan this and that, probably at least 30 uses or meanings with PAN. But not one has pandemic. Thank you.

Review w/Reservations. I congratulate you for the many features your app has which is absent in many dictionary apps. If it weren’t for the inability to “Clear Recents” individually, I would give your app a four-star rating. I have previously suggested this, but “Clear Recents” still clears every word which has been searched. The list of searched items becomes increasingly lengthy. That creates an inconvenient time-consuming search. How handy it would be to save a list of preferred words to keep. There are other dictionary apps which allow a choice of words to delete or save. For this reason, I fore-go using your app more often and opt for an alternate app. I believe many others feel this sentiment as keenly as I do. Please consider my request as I speak for others in this regard.

Super. Use it most every day. Love learning about people, events, new words. I enjoy the Match and Mismatch games. There is one small thing that I wish they would correct. When checking answers or reading an article, when you tap the return icon it takes you all the way back to the top of their beginning page and not where you were reading. You end up having to scroll down to where you were. Any chance of fixing that? Otherwise, an excellent ap and worthy to have. Amazing app. 2018- still using the app and love it. Love learning definitions to new words. Helps my memory and keeps me active mentally.

My favorite dictionary/thesaurus. I’ve been using this app for years. Tried all the other dictionary apps and this is the best by far. It has everything I need: definitions, synonyms, pronunciation. The main page also has a bunch of fun stuff like word games. The best part is the “word of the day”, it’s great learning a new word everyday, although I wish the words were more complex, they often are pretty regular words that I already know.

The Free Dictionary, by Farlex. This is a great app & I would recommend everyone to install it. Even if you already have a different dictionary app, I would still encourage adding this one to your app library. It is filled with useful information that is fun & educational, & so much more. Making flash cards is simple & quick & there are so many different games & quizzes - both kids & adults will love this dictionary, I know I do!

***### NONE BETTER ###***. For any intelligent person, this is an excellent app with a wealth knowledge. The etymology is par none. The definitions include multiple entries allowing comparison, and it has a thesaurus included. It will even show translations for foreign languages. And finally, it provides examples in classic literature of how the word is used in written form. In essence, it has it all. Note that out of over 23,000 reviews this app averages 4.5 stars!! This is an EXCELLENT APP. Get it!

Ask for feedback but don't try to improve app. I used to love this app but I'm so tired of being asked for feedback, with no improvement to the app. I have repeatedly requested the ability to bookmark words into customized lists or categories instead of the one list especially if you have hundreds of words bookmarked. This is perfect for people who want to separate medical terms from their favorite words, etc. This would make the app so much better but they obviously don't care enough to develop the app in realistic ways to satisfy the people who use it. I also highly doubt that I'm the only person who has asked for this feature.

Ads. Ads everywhere.. This appears to be an excellent dictionary on the surface: the information is presented cleanly and quickly without much fluff. The problem is the ads found throughout the app are obtrusive and get in the way of the definitions. I don’t care what AliExpress has available for 43% off if I’m reading and looking to polish up on the definition of a word I’ve come across. All I want is a clean, quick, ad-free dictionary that I can use to define a word and go back to my book without the constant presence of companies trying to sell me things.

It's the best dictionary so far among all that I have tried.. When you look for installing dictionary on your phone 1. you look for free, 2. For those English is not there native language they would be looking for a word explained in a "sentence"using it as an "for example", along with meaning defined. Now on top of all this basics, you get to see 3. Synonyms, 4. You can make your own books of the words which learnt, by adding them into a book. There are many reasons for not going to look for any other dictionary my friends! - Riken Patel

62 day streak & no spoon ?!. It's my go-to app for definitions, I maintain my 'learning' score above 100, & more than half the time since the last few updates it DOES NOT record when I read something or play a game..so my score doesn't increase..I have a life! But I am trying to help kids out too! Come now on! Fix the bug or stop cheating! Do your part.. 1) Please fix it so points are recorded accurately. 2) Mention how many points are required for spoons so people have goals to work towards & we are not blindly going on for 62 days..I'm thinking of deleting the app if after 1-2 years I have only helped one child! 3) I like the idiom, maybe you can add where it originated from instead of just the repeating the exact same written words in the video.. Sorry to be harsh, but I had to change my review from a 5 to a 2. I know it's not easy to make an app, but we both are working towards a goal - to help kids & I am a constant user of your app, for now. Thanks.

Very handy and straight forward. I write a lot and so I need a dictionary on hand. Well this one comes with minimal to no advertisements cluttering the interface. It’s straightforward and easy to use. They also have a few unnecessary but fun features like a word of the day (which can be added as a widget on the iPhone) and some word related games like hangman or matching games. If you went on the app even when you don’t have a word you need to look up you could spend a little time playing a mini game or learning something every day because of their fact of their idiom, article, and quote of the day. The “This day in history” section is always something I never new or thought about before so that’s a neat feature. TLDR: It works like you want it to plus extra features. Would recommend.

Pretty good but.... I’ve been using this for 4 days and it’s pretty good but please add like a voice that says the word and add more things not just a boring little search bar with words do like a pink and blue background and the letters sorted by the words tbh I don’t like search bars do like the pages like a book get inspiration from iBooks. Read a book and turn the page like that’s what I mean.... But this is actually legit and cool! Just I would like more.... and add tabs to flip to like t a r l o and n like it might be hard for some I understand but make it ya know...fun... I’m a 3rd grader and I really want fun things and I use this to study spelling words and meanings but it’s boooorrrriiinnnng without things and also please make the tabs colorful!!!!! Free Pop Up Ads. This has been my favorite Dictionary Thesaurus, which I have been using for over 4 years now. The free version is really great for people who love lots of Pop up adds, because the amount of them has recently increased. So it’s time for me to do the paid subscription version since I don’t do well with distractions.

Buy this. Don’t hesitate.. I’m a writer, use this dictionary several times a day. It is extremely versatile, and I have never entered even the most obscure word without finding it here. One payment gives access to a powerful, useful tool…..for life. This is one of the best values on the app store, hands-down! And if you work in the medical field, take a look at their medical dictionaries as well! The company’s name is Farlex.

So Much More Than a Dictionary!. This is by far the best dictionary I've used in print or digital format. I love that it has a thesaurus, translations, encyclopedia and medical, legal and financial dictionary. It has a customizable home page with "Word of the Day", "Quote of the Day", " This Day in History", "Today's Birthday"and word games like "Match-up", "Hangman" and more. Today's Article of the Day is "Vlad III the Impaler: The Original Dracula ". This Day in History (May 5) is about the Grand Opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891. It is so much more than just dictionary. You've got to check it out!

Poor quality app but no other options yet. My review is also a feedback to the company. I feel the need to voice concerns this way because it is made hard to give feedback otherwise. I would like to ask to make a dedicated native phone app. Currently, an embedded webpage (it seems) is used to provide content. This make the app extremely unfriendly and hard to use. The only advantage of this app, currently, over others is its content. I hope this will change too. I am willing and ready to pay for an dd-free access but not for such a poor quality. Please improve user experience.

Free vs Pro Version. The free version is fine, though not perfect. Despite its limitations, though, it is still available for iOS versions prior to iOS 13. I emphasize its availability because I paid for the Pro app (separate app, not as IAP) years ago, but it now requires iOS 13, which I haven’t had time to install, yet. Today, I re-downloaded this free version because of odd syncing issues with my account between my activity on the browser site and my “outdated” Pro app. It’s a bizarre and annoying situation. I’m grateful the free app is still available for older iOS versions.

Best Dictionary. English is not my first language, so I have to learn it in different ways, including pronounciations, (Both American and British) which allows me how the word is pronounced in different regions. TheFreedictionary has that option. Also Being a medical student, I always wanted a medical dictionary and this app absolutely serves that purpose as well. Thasaurus, wikipedia, medical, and encyclopedia - alltogether. Just Amazing!!

I like it, but.... I am giving it a five star rating because the free version does it’s job. Later on in the review I will list some features I rhino would help, but I won’t knock the score because it could be in the premium version and I’m just not aware. This is my preferred dictionary app because it is sleek, simple design, it include audio from UK as well as American pronunciation, and I think it’s a crime to not include both and I’m surprised more dictionary websites do not. The entries for each word is brilliantly expansive, including as many definitions as possible, and also a well thought-out, and well designed thesaurus. The app does it’s job as a mobile dictionary, that’s all I could ever ask. I don’t always play the vocabulary mobile games inside the app, but they are legitimately fun brain teasers. Possible features to include: I don’t not like that there is no way to build a list of favourites. So if you come across a word that you really liked you’ll have to jot it down somewhere else on your phone or physically. If this feature exists, then I cannot find it. If it is in the premium version that it is not advertised.

Easy to Use. I love this app. So easy to use, so handy when I need a similar word quickly or when I don’t understand a word. Excellent app which meets my daily needs. Fun to use and I really like the additional notes of interest that it offers each day with fun filled facts. Tests my brain and strengthens my knowledge. I really enjoy all the useful information this app provides. One of the Best free apps I have ever installed. I wish more apps were this much fun, as useful and as helpful. Thanks for such a great app! Bottom line: Quick, fast, fun and easy to use. Wonderful app!

What Are. Direct, easy-to-use dictionary provides quick access to information presented in a clear, user-friendly structure that expands with clarifying details and examples that help to foster understanding and correct usage. A definite must-have for anyone who uses words in their profession and/or formal studies; anyone wanting to affect change, garner support, unify understanding, and/or motivate and encourage action NEEDS this application!

KLR. I love this app, there is not a day that goes by, that I’m not using this app. I write prolifically and many times I write a word, and then a dread comes over me, is that really what that word means. If I always trusted my instinct, I would be fine, but I overthink everything. I always feel great for the confirmation from the app. I have used it for years and this is the first time I decided to review the app, that I can’t live without. Smiles.

Big Help. I love using this app while listening to audiobooks, watching movies and tv, and reading books. I rarely cannot find the meanings to unfamiliar words and/or phrases. I do not love the loud ads that come on when I open the app sometimes. I cannot control the volume that disturbs others near me (since I have to have the volume on for other reasons). Can anything be done? This did not used to happen. Keep helping us 😊

Everything is here. So happy to find an app that actually contains the proper definition of the word facism, and not a political reinvention to push an agenda - I'm interested in honest truth, not preserving feelings.

I would love to see a sentence checker - so I could type in a sentence where I am wanting to use a word but am not sure it is the correct use of the word example: “ unless you unequivocally need my help I need the day off “ ( word being unequivocally (don’t think it is correct use of it but was just for explanation purposes) also maybe a word alternative suggestions for sentences where you type in what u wish to say & you are offered alternatives for certain words

I agree, it's the best all-rounder. I love dictionaries and this one will pronounce words for me too. Over the years I've returned to it again and again. I like the occasional word game they offer, and would recommend it as part of any language lovers electronic arsenal. Thank you free dictionary.

Excellent in all aspects. A comprehensive no-nonsense reference app that is practical and useful without the clutter and gimmicks of other apps. You can have as much or as little detail as you want and it covers just about everything you could want in a dictionary and thesaurus.

2 years' use and I still love it. So many interesting features on the front page, would be good for a primary school child. Layout of definition from many sources is a bit busy and repetitive but you get most info including etymology, eventually. A great mobile app to help with your writing and reading.

The most amazing app I have ever downloaded!!. This all rounder app is superb. Free quizzes and tests really challenges me in an extremely fun way. This has, for me, definitely outsmarted google unless for entertainment purposes.

Best, most useful tool. I use this app often, for definitions in other languages as well. I like that it’s entire focus is as a dictionary (others have too much other rubbish included) that it offers synonyms and antonyms, that i can hear the word spoken, other language and grammar forums. I think it could do with a boost in Australianisms, but that’s a hard task and hey, who couldn’t use a boost in Strine!?

A wonderful Resource. I love this app, I use it consistently over my other dictionary/Thesaurus Apps and will actually use it over the Oxford dictionary PC program I have. It is easy to find the information that I need. I came across the free dictionary when I searched google for a legal term. Highly recommend I have never had a problem with this app or their website, and it has improved my learning drastically. I was so overjoyed with this app I bought the Pro Version within 24 hours and never looked back

Don’t update from versions predating the beginning of 2021. There are now these obtrusive ads (two thirds the way down on each page,) that cover the whole screen when scrolling down and again when scrolling back up - started happening after I updated the app from a 2020 version to the latest version (March 2021)

Farlax Dictionary App:. After consulting the online version of this reference on numerous occasions, for an entirely satisfactory result, I installed the application on my IOS desktop, reasoning that the ability to consult the reference offline would be appreciably more expedient. Unfortunately, that proved not to be the case. I’ve found it’s operation to be cumbersome due to, among other things, having to circumnavigate popups and, the like to get at the substantive content. I appreciate the need for displaying commercial content, however, nothing would be lost by situating it in a manner that did not cause the mischief I described above.

Unusable due to intrusive ads. I understand ads, but after every search? And ads that cut off background apps are instant uninstalls

Great but…. I already bought the pro version in-app. It still has buttons to get the pro version, which is very confusing. Also, the search bar needs to be at the bottom. It is neither ergonomic nor practical to have it at the top unless you hold your phone in a very unconventional way. Other than that, I love the app. I have been using it for years now. But I noticed that I am using it less and less frequently as it is hard to type things with the bar being being on top.

It’s ok when you need help as your iPhone 📱 only helps you when you ask what the word means then it goes a way fast enough that you can’t remember what it told you so this can help as it won’t go away from you fast enough so you can put in what you need and see what it says and copy it when need but don’t use it to where it will get you in trouble with the law as this would fall under plagiarism as it’s VERY BAD. YOU CAN GET IN GET PENALIZED AND GET PUT IN A JAIL-CELL. EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT HAVE PUT IT INTO A DIFFERENT CONTENT OR CONTEXT’S JUST BY COPYING THE WORD FROM THE WEBSITE AND PUTTING ON A NEW SPREADSHEET. It should always come from your comments and remarks and context’s so that way you can back up you remarks and comments. So that way it doesn’t look like you have plagiarized someone else’s work and it looks like your work. And not someone’s work.

Amazing tool for Spanish learners. I paid a few dollars to remove the ads and use the Spanish version everyday on y my iPad and iPhone. It is much more complete than the built-in dictionaries since it pulls its definitions from multiple sources, giving the definitions as they are used in different countries. One element that I appreciate is that it’s possible to select a word or a sentence in the dictionary app and copy it to a note in another application. That can’t be done in the built-in dictionaries provided by Apple.

Handy for interpreters. As a court interpreter and translator, I find myself using this app several times a day. I love how easy it is to access clear definitions of English terms (and I appreciate that different sources are cited for every word), and the Spanish translation function is surprisingly accurate and complete for a free app.

Not the same dictionary!. Hi when I first installed this dictionary on my iPad, it was wonderful. The definitions of the words was in depth and sound. There were many references to biblical scriptures as well...loved it; that was an a+ in my book. The thesaurus was also very thorough in their word selections. However, I now find this app to be quite mundane and rather boring. It is lacking in so many areas that I find myself going to google for my definitions. Please bring back the original, because it was fantastic!

Very sound vocabulary and grammar resource/app that evolves by the update, as well as some interactive stuff (sneaky education) for those who seek (or those who are ensnared, but consciously not intending) to properly grasp and make use of the English language... Deleted it. Every upgrade appears to be just more ads. I’ve deleted it Since writing this the app developer wrote me saying the updates are mostly bug fixes and enhancements. Well I’ve never encountered a bug and I have not see any enhancements but I have seen A LOT MORE commercials or ads. Maybe that’s the enhancements and the bugs address the poor loading of ads. I have no use for this app as is. I can just google definitions etc.

Thumbs up. I recommend this app to people who wants to learn English. Everytime I open up this app,I get to learn new things like vocabulary, idioms, synonyms, antonyms and many more. Hands down, best dictionary!!. I look forward to my daily visit of this site. I’m constantly learning new words & thoroughly enjoy the challenging word match game. Truthfully, I’d say my favorite feature is the option to hear any chosen word in a British accent. (They just sound better that way!)

None better!. I have used this app for years...even the online version before I owned a cell phone. I have always found it simple to use and extremely helpful. Whether I am looking for understanding or a better way to share my own ideas, this app has always been my "go-to" for the help I need.

Includes a visual thesaurus!. I love this dictionary app. It’s definitely above basic in its features, clean and logical interface, I mean I can’t think of a single thing I’d need when writing books, papers, prose or trying to cheat at scrabble. Brilliant app! I highly recommend it.

Spelling section. The spelling section is more about identifying a definition, and not much about testing spelling skills. I suggest either calling the section a different name or change the game to be a real spelling test, not that easy to do unless you play the sound of the word. I use the apps other functions alot and play every day. Thanks

More than a Dictionary. The dictionary is extensive and nearly always supplies the appropriate definition (though typically British). The daily quote, event, memorable individual, and odd facts provide stimulation as well as frequently broadening my knowledge base. The point system seems weighted to frequent use rather than reading the material at a single session (if this is of interest to you).

Dictionary Makes Me a PRO!!!. I LOVE this dictionary!!! I could do a lot of stuff that I can’t do in a normal dictionary. For example, I could hear the words and see which country it originated from. The search results could also read my mind if I caught a typo. Above all, the Free Dictionary by Farlex is the BEST dictionary EVER!!!!🐶🐶

It’s comprehensive and free.... I’m not sure how often most people are using this app, but I suppose it’s often enough that the ads irritate some people. Apex. I prefer the Free Dictionary more than all the other dictionary apps because not only can I find definitions, the Free Dictionary has etymologies, synonyms and antonyms (plus a link to its thesaurus), and examples of the word used in published material. Besides the thesaurus link, there are links to Wikipedia and legal and medical dictionaries to learn about word use specific to "jargon."

Very good dictionary. I use this dictionary often and have for quite a few years. I find it’s content VERY reliable and comprehensive and it is free. I like that it provides definitions from several major dictionaries, except from Webster’s, of course, which has its own online app for $$.

Great app but buggy. For years I have preferred this app to all others-and that is still the case today. I particularly enjoy reading the etymology of words and the easy access to synonyms and antonyms. However, this app (on my iPhone and iPad) has been crashing a lot lately and it’s discouraging. For ex, if I’m reading a book/article and feel the need to look up a word, the app opens and then closes about 30% of the time

I love and rely on this dictionary. I seem compelled to try to know where a word comes from and why it means whatever today. This most often gives my enough of that ( I’m not a deep scholar, just curious). There’s the added benefit of including Spanish when I want it.. I’ve tried others and found them lacking the essentials that this possesses.

The Best Dictionary App. This dictionary combines entries from various sources and after going through them you’re very likely to find what you’re looking for. Apart from the thesaurus, one other feature I love about this dictionary is the examples it cites from various corpora. I don’t care about the ads, the app’s creators have to eat. Kudos to them.

Well done. This app is like a game. Well it does include games. It provides so much information. Unlike other dictionary apps. It gives you so much information about the word that you are searched. Superb app. This sure takes the place of my old English teacher, who always said just spell it out! If i had no idea of meaning of word nor ever seen it in print than how could i spell it out. Extremely dependable. I love this app. It has always given me the results I’m looking for. The options of not only meaning but thesaurus and translations have always completed my searches. I don’t think it needs any improvement, but it probably could in an area I’m overlooking. Anyways, to me is quite perfect!!

Good but 1 Annoying Bug. It often keeps your most recent word in the search box, and then even after you clear it and start typing the new word, it puts the old word back in front of what you’re typing and messes it up, requiring you to delete it a second time and type the new word a second time. Very annoying!

I love the idea of getting a fascinating word each day, but am ready to cancel the option, as it hasn’t had a single word that wasn’t common and self-explanatory since I turned it on. Please offer a more interesting selection of words. There are, after all, myriad, fascinating options. Throw in a bit of etymology for fun.

The Best Things of Life are FREE. This free app is full of useful information and tools. I use it all the time. I especially like the audio option that lets you hear how a word should be pronounced. But there's much more to this app that will help build communication skills. I highly recommend it!

Only 1 comment. I love this app, use it every morning for articles and word games. However, I was taught in school, to define a word the word itself should not be present in the definition. Example...today on the word game prefix is explained "to add a prefix to a word". This defeats the purpose!!! Please improve this feature.

Great!. This is a great app for daily usage. While I own very few apps, this one is always on my home screen so I can quickly look up words in articles I'm not 100% clear on. Also, unlike other apps, there aren't a zillion advertisements popping up or crowding the screen.

Love it! 🏆🏆🏆. I use this app everyday, if not just for the 'Word of the Day' which is always enjoyable. The audio word pronunciations are helpful and you can also set the accent to English or American. There are daily articles for "born on this day", "historically happened on this day", idioms, and a few word games to challenge your vocabulary. Another fun perk is; for every article you read or word you look up (any activity really) you get "Brain Level" points and trophies on your profile, this will show you were you rank next to other users. Perfect. I like to write story's to pass the time and I often find myself using boring or overused words like 'asked' or 'said. These moments are especially present when trying to write captivating dialogue. But with this app all my problems are fixed! Definitely recommend for anyone who actually needs a dictionary or thesaurus.

Needed. Thank you for putting this book at our fingertips, have had it for a number of years and love the facts that come with some of the words. Really understandable as I often look up old words from the KJVA and this is the first source I go to. 👍

Sr Techncial Writer and Trainer. I use this app almost daily. The definitions include every word I have searched from technical jargon to modern slang. I especially enjoy the ‘Word of the Day!’ Learning new words and expanding my vocabulary is a constant when I make time to view this feature. Great app. I love this app! It's easy to use and great for students. But it does have a few adds. I have a bunch of learning/education apps to help me grow in my learning skills. I added this one to my collection. All in all I would recommend this app to you reading this. It works great for a simple dictionary, but yet can do so much more!

Excellent. What's more to say! Excellent as before. I can only repeat what I already said. I said it all, can’t add to my comments! My wife and now my daughter do the synonyms and antonyms daily and we try to outdo each other which makes for a wonderful connection for family fun!

My most used app. Two thumbs up for new dark mode! Kids love the games, hangman and words within words. Every day interesting news and historical trivia. And then it does the dictionary, too. You can download offline dictionaries so it works when you are on the plane or out hiking. My all time favorite app.

Perfection. This app has been a HUGE help! I love how it’s set up to give you the word of the day. It has everything you need all in one app! Like I said “PERFECTION”. Only thing, I wish it had a section that has a section to find words that rhyme because I write a lot of poems. Just a thought.. thank you!

Fun, slightly bumbling, but up to the task. I use it daily.. I’d give it a Five Star but there are lapses. It’s not a master level dictionary. The word games are challenging although using archaic meanings used against the challenger aren’t quite on the up and up. I DO find myself searching words daily not only for lexicographical meaning, but for its idiomatic meaning as well. It’s my go to. It’s a useful app.

Excellent for medical students. There are specific Latin words in medicine that if you know the meaning you can understand the disease. This dictionary has every single unusual and uncommon disease and syndrome I’ve looked up thus far. Love this app- quick easy to use and to the point WITH option for related info. Thanks!

Learning by doing. Thanks to this app,I learn the English well as my first foreign language. It helps me to increase my vocabulary and my knowledge in many new fields. Also I love encyclopedia and wikipedia and so on. But in real life,it's a real challenge for me to deal with the multicultural situations.
