Beautiful!. This is just stunning! A friend told me about this app, showed it to me at lunch time. I instantly loved it, so looked it up when I got home. No wonder... Brian Eno! Fantastic app, truly. I love just letting this play and soothe and just randomly add my own touch here and there. Thank you for creating such a beautiful, soothing app. To the users that want a "sleep" mode: your phone already has one. Just go into the timer functions, first one is "sleep iPhone". Set how long you want it to play for you (15 min, 30 min, 2 hours, whatever), start it, then go back to Bloom. Your phone will play soothing music for you, and turn itself off, conserving your battery. =)

greatest music app. Worth the $4! Wish more people would try it

Brilliant application!. I can think of a number of new features that would be fun and useful - the ability to control decay length as well as delay, for example - but I'd hate to see such a beautiful, elegantly simple application clogged up with needless doodads. It's wonderful as it is; if Eno and Chilvers do add features (and I assume they will) I hope they include the option to run Bloom in original mode. In just a few days this has become my absolute favorite iPhone app. It's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of drone or ambient music, and like to tinker with sound, you'll dig it.

Wonderful start.. I am enjoying this app on a nightly basis. It's one of my most-used applications and I don't want to sound ungrateful, but the addition of just a few things would really make it five-star (at least to me). If I could drag my finger to make longer sweeps of sound, if I could "take back" a misplaced tap, if I could set some notes to echo, and if I could add an underling rythem I would be happy to give it five stars (and pay for the update). I do hope someone reads these reviews/wish lists and decides to do an update. Until then I'll happily play with the options I have.

Years later, still enjoyable. This is such an underrated app. Bloom is lovely, peaceful, contemplative. A hidden gem. Do yourself the favor of downloading it.

Truly Amazing. This app is incredible! I've had it for awhile, but did not realize it had a sleep timer until last night. I am a terrible sleeper, and have trouble falling asleep and waking often. Last night I set the sleep timer to 30 minutes, created a melody, and was asleep within minutes. I did not wake until morning. I don't know why it works so well at soothing the soul, and I don't really care. Just happy that it does. The price for this app is unbelievably low, and I have never had a problem with it. Buy it now, and enjoy...

classic Eno. This app reminds me of my favorite period of Brian Eno '77-'81. I think he did his best work in that time. This app has the feel of those long slow waves of sound that just seem to ebb and flow. I actually will just be walking listening to it and without looking at the screen just tap in a series of notes to add to the soundtrack. I didn't expect anything more that a simple sound pad and that's what this is. Great for driving in the car to zen out the stress of traffic and lame Muni drivers..Great that they have the multitasking feature now so you can do other things on the phone while this keeps on playing. The only thing that I'm curious about is why so many apps don't have any tutorials or instructions on how to use them...? There's nothing on the app itself and no notes on the page if you go to their website.

Essential app. I’ve had this app since it’s release and use it almost every night to help calm down before falling asleep. The generative music and it’s programmed forever changing order is both soothing, the almost repetition leading to a sort of gnosis.

Great. Inpiring. Musically-intriguing. Interactive art.. This is sort of a musical instrument and sort of a piece of interactive art. It's inspiring and relaxing. Don't buy this if you don't like ambient music. But if you do like ambient music definitely get it. Basically the program generates two sounds at once. One is a piano sample. This is triggered by the user. You tap the screen and depending on where you hit it the note changes. Then, as with a delay pedal, it repeats after a while. The other noise is a distant pad that sort of surfaces and morphs depending on what notes and chords you play with the piano. Also if you leave the instrument alone it just sort of regurgitates old patterns they you played indefintely. Very cool.

Gorgeous, but many reviewers don't get it.. this is, in short, the best app i have bought. it's my personal favorite right now. people who are saying "it's not truly generative" or are asking for more control or the ability to save just aren't seeing the forest for the trees: it's not supposed to be a replacement instrument for you - it's a piece of generative art that works in this instant, and then fades. you're not supposed to be able to save them, or have that much control. it's elegance is in its simplicity, and it is very, very elegant indeed.

Please give option to remove the self-advertisements??. I’ve been a fan of Bloom for 9 years. I wish SO much there were a way I could revert to a version where you don’t see the ad on the initial screen for the other apps by the same people. For me those ads, even though they’re small, are so distracting and against what I think the spirit and experience of Bloom should be. It’s frustrating. Please give an option not to see them - I would pay for it!

beautiful. this app is really gorgeous.. you can easily get swept away while playing it. really relaxing, but also really moving and fun to play! i highly recommend it, money well spent! what brian eno said about this app being like a music box, made a lot more sense after playing with it.. it's gorgeous. really well done! i hope that future updates will bring a way to flip on and off the background drone whenever you wish, not that i don't love the drones, they're really gorgeous, it would just add some dynamic to be to create sections without it and bring it back in! and some sort of tempo light or measurement for the loops would be fun to be more precise with the looping.. BUT this app is beautiful and simple, which is exactly what makes it so charming.

AMAZING! One of the most unique iPhone music apps available.. The concept is simple. You're presented with a subtle drone. You tap on areas of the screen to create sounds and make loops. You can tap different areas to create layers. The end result is a beautiful and somewhat relaxing. The presentation is also amazing with all the unique colors and shapes. You can clearly tell Brian Eno had a part in this. If you're a fan of ambient music or just enjoy making fun making sounds on your iPhone, this app is for you. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Definitely my favorite music app so far.. Finally someone is starting to actually use a unique interface like the iPhone for something new, and not just rehashing older ideas again and again. Great sound and interface, really unique to be honest. I could easily see wasting too much time with this. My only wish is that there was some way to save what I've created when I close the app, would make it easier to make sounds on the go, and then record them when I get back to the studio.

Did good, do better. Simple, clean and addictive. It's very easy to lay down nice sounding patterns, and the generative mode does fine at making its own. The obvious missing feature is recording, as many others have pointed out. The different "moods" do a fine job of changing the tuning, but as others have said, there needs to be more variety in the available tones. Less obvious is the missed opportunity. The only gesture in the app is the "touch"- tap to make a sound. The app should leverage gestures to allow me to drag my fingers and alter the tone. Bend the note, or add sustain, for example. I hope to see something like that in a future upgrade.

Relaxing and fun for all age groups. As a long-time Eno fan, I picked this little ditty up as soon as I found out about it. I've spent tons of time playing with it or just listening. Last night, our sick, cranky 14 month old wouldn't go to sleep. We'd tried everything to get her to relax. In desperation, I pulled out my iPhone and started Bloom. She giggled when she realized that her fingers were causing the sound. I think she even realized that her patterns were repeating, but I'm not sure. She played with Bloom for the better part of a half hour—a long time for a toddler. Then, as I noticed her start to relax, I put it on play, and we lay down on the couch together. She was asleep in minutes. Today, when she saw my iPhone, she started reaching for it and pointing towards the screen. Consider that a pre-verbal endorsement.

A musical zen garden. Instantly calming, mesmerizing chill, & a lovely app if you're in to ambient sounds. I asked my kids to each touch screen & we created a beautiful soundtrack for a lazy Sunday morning. Would like to see a sleeptimer added as this would be a great lullaby for grownups, I could definitely fall asleep to this. I'd also like to be able to have this run in background while doing other things on iPhone. All in all I'm enjoying very much. Adding a few other options for underlying tones and a choice of something other than a synth piano "ping" would be a plus, but without cluttering up the intended atmosphere.

:) That moment .... That moment when you realize Bloom can make chords :)

Ambient music pioneer is now an iPhone/iPod Touch pioneer too!. As a fan of Brian Eno's ambient music for almost two decades I was thrilled with the idea that Brian Eno was undertaking a new medium for his atmospheres - and an interactive one at that! In the past Brian Eno has dabbled with alternate mediums with various sound installations and his 2006 computer interactive project/album 77 Million Paintings but none compare to the ease, simplicity, and effectiveness of Bloom. Endless original ambient textures both audible and visible are literally at your fingertips looping, layering, and floating continuously. If you don't like your creation no problem, just shake your iPhone/iPod Touch and start crafting your new ambient space. A few years ago there was a stand-alone ambient tone generator in a little transistor radio form factor called the Buddah Machine that, at the time, was a step forward in portable ambience. Bloom takes both portability and Brian Eno's musical brilliance to a new level. Think of it as your own 'Music For Airports' app. Highly recommended!

It's like having the soundtrack to Spore in your pocket!. This application is a must-have for anyone who enjoys the work of Brian Eno. When I first started playing Spore I could not believe how amazingly beautiful the music in the game was. But when I found out that Brian Eno & Peter Chilvers, the creators of the music for Spore, decided to release a new program entitled Bloom, I immediately made the purchase and was not disappointed. This program is great for both creating your own soundscapes or to just listen to it generate it's own soundtrack. If you need to concentrate on something such as work, there is nothing better. If you're trying to relax/meditate, this program is for you.

Perfect. Truly something new and amazing. Whole new twist on the Music for Airports and similar environmental music pieces. The best so far at making something from nothing. Don't have to learn anything to make beautiful listening experiences. I can save a lot of space on my iPhone since I won't be needing the majority of my playlists. This kind of music experience could be a real challenge to the music industry. Hopefully a peek at future trends. Love to be able to save compositions to recordings for exporting to my computer and others.

MIND BENDING little app!. Most incredible ambient textural creation machine! Touch the different parts of the screen and become part of the creative process. Experiment and learn expand your knowledge of this amazing little app and then let it take you away into worlds unknown. Sit back let it evolove and relax....forget about all the things that have been bothering you and clear your head. The words CALGON TAKE ME AWAY come to mind when I listen to this cool little exploratory application. I think that even Steven Wilson might not smash his iPod if he saw this application! Now that's what I'm talkin bout!

Unique. Strangest app I have, by far. Best app I have, by far. Every time I use bloom, I discover something new such as a different feature, or hear something new. I love to listen to all kinds of music and the music that you can create with this app falls into its own genre. The organic sounds created mesmerize me. The repetition almost forces you to pick out meaning and familiar music in the seemingly random notes. I was surprised the other day to hear the app begin to play a piece that I had composed and cleared long ago. I was pleasantly surprised to be brought back to something that had been forgotten. The music that I create with this app plays in my head even when I'm not listening. It is a very calming and worthwhile experience to purchase this. The sounds are like no other.

Love it - but some suggestions.. I love this app. I’ve had it for a few weeks now and I still use it all the time. It’s simplicity and depth makes it enduring. But there are some little additions that would make the user experience even better: -A lock mode that would prevent interruption of a “frozen” cycle if the screen were mistakenly touched. - The ability to turn off the screen in order to save power or not light up a darkened room. When the sleep button on the top of the iPod Touch is pressed the screen does go dark, but it seems to clear the current programming. I know one can turn down the brightness on the screen before starting to use the app, but that takes more foresight than I have. - It would be fantastic if Bloom could play in the background as other apps on the iPod are used. This request seems pretty unlikely, but it doesn't hurt to check. - It seems that for some reason, even when the evolve mode is turned off, tones will begin to speed up and glom together, or slow way down over time. This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to make it a bit irritating. I would hope it’s a simple bug to fix. Thanks for a great and involving app.

The sounds are too limited.. I downloaded several generative music apps. Bloom was one of them. Unfortunately the loan was a paid app right off the bat where as the others gave trials. The app that I downloaded and like the most is and Endel. Endel is much more complex in the sounds that it generates in the textures that it creates. I find Endel much more enjoyable to listen to then Bloom. Bloom is very sublime, and generates an ambience rather than an engaging musical exploration or experience.

Not quite generative, but wonderful. This is more like a touch-screen Frippertronics, with the gradually fading loop of input sounds, which is its own type of wonderful. However, if anyone from Opal (authors included) are reading this, I'd suggest this to make it more similar to Eno's installation sounds: The vertical axis of the screen controls pitch - but let the horizontal axis control the individual note's delay. Then, like the Bell Studies, there would be a series of differently timed repeating tones, re-connecting as they loop back in various ways. Even without this modification, this is a nice implementation of the idea of generative tones with its visual component. Many thanks for this!

Good to Great. I just recently downloaded this app, and it deserves much of the hype it is receiving. I look to rate apps on three levels: execution, creativity and practicality. This gets a 4, 5 and 4 using those criteria in my view. I dropped it to a 4 on execution as there are some improvements the developers can make - some have been expressed by other reviewers more knowledgeable than I on this kind of app. Creativity is a full 5 because I haven't seen anything like it - kids from 2 to 100 can enjoy this application on many levels. On practicality, my one beef is at the same time a veiled compliment. I find value in using this app to relax, but without a 'time to run' setting, I find I can fall asleep at night while playing Bloom and find my Touch drained in the morning. Being able to set this to run for a set time, either manually entered or for presets (15 minute intervals?) would be a big plus for this enthusiastic user. Get this added, and I nudge my overall rating to a 5. To those reading this review who haven't yet taken the plunge, I strongly encourage you to purchase this app.

Sleep So Well. This is not a game. It does not say it's a game anywhere. So stop complaining that it's not a fun game. That being said, this is a nice, and nicely designed, app. The "music making" aspect of this app is fun, but I have to admit I almost never use it. It's fun the first few times, but you can only tap the screen to make a plinkly noise so many times. I do love to let the app just do its thing and play me to sleep. It's like a more modern and musical windchime. I've always been skeptical of those background noise things that are supposed to make you fall asleep, but every time I use this I fall asleep faster and sleep deeper.

Excellent Music App!. I've been waiting for a generative music app to come to the iPhone and this one not only delivers, but it goes above and beyond by allowing you to perform with the application. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that it does not have enough tones built in so every time you use it, it has the same general feel to it. More sounds or the ability to change the sound it generates would take this app to the next level (which I'm hoping the developer will do in future updates). It's an over all great app and definitely worth checking out.

Generative music you (or it) makes!. Not going to change your life, but one of the most ingenious apps out there for any medium. The built in tone sets are just about perfect for this kind of thing. The underlying chordal structures move independently of your prescribed 'melody' and generate new textures. Patterns you create will fade away, only to reappear in variations over new layers. I love that you can freeze a spot to repeat - it works great here as a compositional tool in the classic sense. But the real beauty is what it was designed for - to generate music and evolve. Another huge plus is that it does not put your host to sleep - the music keeps going until you quit. Sonic creation: active participation, partial participation, or non-participation. Your choice! Would love eventually to hear other 'lead' timbres, rhythms(?), etc. but right now it's just great as it is. You could compose a complete indie film score with this if you wanted! This app totally knocks it out if the park on first at bat. Great job Fellows!

Speechless. At first I thought this app was kinda cool, but more of a curiosity when I was bored and bought/installed it while laid over in the airport. I played around with it for a bit... and got this very strange feeling I was "playing" with something completely new. I've never interacted with anything quite like this before. Thus far, this has to be the most innovative... creative... relaxing... inspirational.... app I've downloaded to date. Would buy it again in an abstract heart beat. For the next version, I'd like to see a way to either select a different base sound, or a way to alter it's freqs. And, it'd be nice is the basic artwork created varied more than just circles. Still, the genius of this app in part is it's simplicity and intuitive use. Makes me wonder why I was always so enthralled with ambient, minimal music compositions when it's soooo easy to make your own. ;-) (warning: after awhile... I thought the app wasn't working right. I could no longer hear the lower tone sounds from the iphone. I tried everything to try and fix it, ie. reinstalling, rebooting, and even restoring. Then, I realized when I was first playing with it in the airport I was using my headphones. Some of the lower pitch tones aren't quite audible with the little iphone's speakers. But with headphones, or hooked up to a stereo.. the audio quality is very good at all pitches.)

Brilliant. A transformative app! The power of the iphone is that a single app can be what it becomes; its default; its raison d'être; its one and only; its dedicated purpose; the thing that makes it worth it. The iPhone is a vessel; what it carries, what it becomes, can be different for everybody; and even that can change like some kind of shapeshifter depending on the time, the place, the mood, or the mission. Bloom is just one of these kinds of apps; it is worth it just for this! It is at once an instrument and a meditation tool/device! It is like a trampoline for the spirit; when you go there you enter an orb and leave everything else behind. Eno makes things possible. He gives permission. He opens the door with Bloom and says anyone can come on in; anyone can play. Anyone can be a musician. Anyone can be creative. Anyone can make art! Just Bloom!!! It is a beautiful thing!

Bloomin AWEsome... 5 Stars!. This app is great, especially is you like ambient music. I work in tech support (a stressful environment). I've been playing with bloom all day in between calls, and when I get a call I just turn down the volume a bit and let it go random. It's non distracting to me or my customers. I'm going to fall asleep to it tonight. Two features I'd like to request though is a way to dial in exact BMP/Tempo, and a separate volume control for the evolving background tones (because sometimes I would like to bring those tones to the front more). Have you guys ever thought about making a Generative Percussion App? One that has lots of break beats and it picks single hits from the breaks and chops them up randomly, occasionally flipping a sample around backwards, timestretching it, or pitch shifting (also with a bpm dial). That would just be the most awesome app I could come up with.

One of the first apps you ever downloaded is still strong. After watching games, music, entertainment, and social media come and go, it is encouraging and exciting to come back to this work again and again. Highly recommend this one.

Fantastic for both fans of Eno and just people who want an ambience generator.. I've been following Eno's work with ambient music and generative systems for a long time, and Bloom is the perfect, distilled essence of many of the projects he's been working on, most especially Koan, although this nowhere near as complex and configurable as Koan. Bloom basically generates ambient music based on nine differet chord patterns (or "moods" as the software calls them) and the work is comparable to Eno albums like Shutov Assembly and Thursday Afternoon (also some his older work like Apollo and Music For Airports). You can manipulate the sounds yourself by touching the screen and adding notes which will repeat for a certain amount of time which can be somewhat adjusted with a delay setting. What you get is a fantastic music app that can just sit in the background and provide you with an endless world of light ambient suspension. The only downside is that you cannot exit the program and leave the music on while you surf the web or whatever, you have to stay inside of Bloom to listen to it. But it is really is perfect for when you want some light, continuously evolving background noise, but want something musical and tonal as opposed to a white noise generator or whatnot. Best $4 I've ever spend on any piece of software ever.

Short-Lived Fun. This is quite a unique app for simple composition and it offers cheap musical entertainment for a short amount of time. The idea behind it is great: easily compose moody soundscapes on the go, even if you're not a musician. The game's design basically makes it impossible to fail. For the money, Bloom delivers a good number of different variables to work within, and it is fairly enjoyable. However, I quickly lost interest in it and moved on to other, non-musical applications, saving music creation for my desktop computer. Others might find it more interesting than myself, but I found the musical confines the app provides to be a bit too limiting to mess around with for long.

Pretentious Nonsense. This is not a music application. It's not even interesting. It's the application equivalent of filling up a bunch of wine glasses with water and hitting them with a knife. Interesting for about 45 seconds - add another minute of interest if you make the water in the glasses different colors and you like pretty colors. Ooohhh it must be great because Brian Eno helped - guess what - his last interesting work since his Roxy Music days was with the Talking Heads and U2 almost 20 years ago. He phoned this one in, folks. For anyone who is on the fence about this application, let me give you an example of what you will get for your money - ready - touch iPhone - "ting"; touch it several more times - "ting, ting, tiiing, ting, tiing tiing tiiing - wait about 30 seconds and then the tinging will stop. Repeat ad nauseum = dull.

This is what the iPhone is all about!. There are many apps for the iPhone, but few of them truly showcase what the device is all about. To me, Bloom is one of those apps. Bloom is a simple but very powerful and visually appealing musical song generator. The app meshes exactly with the iPhone brand the Apple brand of powerful elegance and excellent interactive design. Bloom is interesting enough for the adult music lover, but easy enough for my 5-year-old son to play and enjoy, and even to go to sleep listening to! As soon as I saw it was built by Brian Eno, I knew it would be a great app. If you like this app, you'll probably also enjoy Brian Eno's albums on iTunes. I'm hoping that a few enhancements are made to this application over time (ability to play a continuous tone run by dragging your finger, a way to add in more "instruments" other than the current tonal notes, and a way to freeze the generated song and then play other songs on top of it, amongst other things), but I still give it 5 stars. It opened my eyes to what the iPhone is truly capable of... and just wait 3-5 years from now when the device is 2-4 times faster and can handle tens or hundreds of simultaneous notes playing and displaying.

Relax everybody!. I am a licensed massage therapist and whenever the satellite radio channel goes on the fritz, I turn on Bloom and in between effleuraging some muscles, a few taps and it's ambient live music for the guest as well as a completely zen soundtrack. At less than a pack of cigarettes, it's paid for itself. If one wants to record, plug a mini stereo cable to a recorder input and play it live into a portastudio, GarageBand or other source. I just wish the app was compatible with my iPod composite cable so I could watch it on my TV while I play! This is the best original app available. Even if you are not musically inclined, pick this app up and start jamming! ... To sleep! Lol.

A bit pricey, but still enjoyable.. I really like this app. You can create pretty relaxing melodies that play on loop, while watching an artistic looking sort of bubble light show. They kind of remind me of ripples in a pond. There is even an option that you can set if you would like to use it as a sort of soundscape. You can set the timer on it to play for let's say... 30 minutes and it will shut off. It can get old after a while but it is nice for what it is and I would recommend it to someone who is into meditation or just likes sounds and pretty things to look at. The price is a little high, though. I would go down a dollar or two.

Pocket installation. I give this 5 because I am aware of what Eno is trying to provide and because I have not had the sound difficulties that other reviewers have reported. I can understand lower ratings if one is not familiar with or does not enjoy Eno's recent ambient work and installations. I can also understand deep frustration with audio issues. I have found that by turning the volume down a bit, both in the preferences within the application itself, and of the master volume of the iphone, that I have not encountered any audio difficulties. What I enjoy most about this is that it is like a portable and interactive ambient Eno installation. That is fun for someone like me who goes for those kinds of things. But, of course, I am writing this review to encourage those who have similar musical and artistic taste to purchase this application, and to warn those who do not have such inclinations not to buy it, so that they are not disappointed (and thereby they will avoid writing another unnecessarily negative review). Enjoy!

Beautiful app!. Incorporating Eno's minimalist ambient music into an application such as this was worth the 3.99. This was the first app I bought and it has been enjoyed on a daily basis. I've been a fan of Brian Eno since Ambient 1 and this app fits the music perfectly. My 2 year old loves it as well with the colors and gentle sounds. Waiting for what comes next! Just downloaded the update and it just made this app better than ever! More sounds and moods are an addition and not a replacement which is great. Going to try out the other apps from Opal in the near future.

Great for chilling out, needs more options. I really like bloom. It is meant to be an ambient music generator, not a techno beatbox, so those wishing for beats are missing the point. Eno's philosopy of ambient is that ambient music can be ignored as background atmosphere, or it can be carefully listened too, and so it must be subtle. Bloom combines two different ambient sounds - a synthesized background drone playing a long, morphing chord chosen from 12 different scales called "Moods" (which have odd plant-like names like "Neroli" and "Tofu") and a feature insturment that sounds like a cross between a piano and a xylophone. The feature insturment has notes that are played by touching the screen, and then looped. What I would like to see from Bloom is more ways to manipulate the background drone - let me choose a specific chord and timbre, and a time period of change. Also, I'd like to see more timbres for the feature instrument - the piano sound gets old pretty fast, although it remains pleasant.

Wonderful!. A fantastic app from a wonderful pioneer in music. It isn't so much an "instrument" as it is a program which (with your help) generates "musical wallpaper". Anyone expecting an app with the level of control associated with a piano or synth should refrain from buying this app. Those interested in generative music and ambient sound textures should check it out. Bloom is simple and soft-spoken, a Zen koan embedded in color and sound. I use it in meditation, and I know I'll find a use for it in my live sets. Way to go, Opal. Bloom is everything it ought to be! Along the lines of improvements, perhaps the following would be nice- * A BPM marker of some kind * A simple, intuitive drum option, for those who wish to enable it. * More than one voice * Recordability These are mere suggestions to improve an already outstanding product. I can't wait to see what Bloom 2 looks like!

[Update] Game works flawlessly after the update. [Update] - 5 stars Initially this game was fun but had severe issues with crackle on the iPod Touch 2G. Now that those issues have been resolved, I highly recommend this music based app to anyone. It's fun and relaxing. [First thoughts] - 4 stars I love this app. I've been playing around with it for a day now and find it a great way to de-stress. There is one big problem with it though. The sound quality is awful. It constantly sounds like there is some static feedback while the app is on. It doesn't matter whether I use the app with or without headphones. Please fix this problem, otherwise this is a fantastic app.

One of my all-time favorite apps. Bloom represents a brilliant fusion of Brian Eno's ideas about "generative music" with the computing power and mobility of an iOS device, courtesy of software designer Peter Chilvers, a fine composer in his own right. It was innovative when it was first released several years ago, and thankfully Chilvers has now updated it to be compatible with iOS 10. You could regard this as a sort of infinite album: a software engine that you can either customize or leave to its own devices, which will endlessly create a kind of music that Eno has, at different times, called ambient, generative, and "thinking music." The music never exactly repeats itself, though of course it's restricted in other ways by the specific design of the software and the limited number of sound-types available. If you've ever enjoyed the work of Eno and others in this vein, I highly recommend Bloom.

Music therapy anyone?. This is first rate, and complelled me to finally review an app. Bloom takes you back to Eno's "Neroli" recordings, but puts you in the drivers seat. I've had this for half a day and already see SO many ways to enjoy it: creating evolving backgrounds to improvise against (with a flute, clarinet, sax, voice, etc.), maybe even live! (can you hook the iPhone to an external monitor?). Young children (with clean hands!) can enjoy this and learn about hi-lo/fast-slow, etc. The drone makes it ideal for styles like Indian Classical. Then again, you can just sit back and enjoy the tranquility you will be creating all by yourself.

Very unique. Worth the money.. Great app, I'm happy to see a usable instrument. I have some requests: Some sort of tempo indication so you can place notes more easily. Now it's a bit difficult to count the 'measure' until it's too late. Ability to move, change velocity, and delete specific notes. More tones and the ability to combine them. Ability to export as midi or aiff. I suppose line out would work. Ability to save and layer compositions. Ability to play nonrepeated notes over a frozen pattern. Please don't think these limitations are a reason not to purchase this app. I have over a hundred apps and this is a new favorite. Very relaxing, beautiful and easy to use. Highly recommended! 5 stars.

Ambience + Performance Art. I've downgraded my rating to 3 stars. My opinion of the app hasn't changed, but (a) there are now so many other quality music/sound generation applications of equal or better value (imo) and (b) the "room for updates" has been left entirely empty by the developers. Still a decent application, just not all that special anymore. (my original review) + easy to use right away + the "bell" tones you get are very pleasing and work well together with no effort + visually pleasing + although the parameters are narrow, within those parameters there is a lot of room for experimentation + room for expansion with updates However, if you are looking for a synth-type app. you will be disappointed that you can't do more with the application. This was designed to be used and enjoyed, not as a studio tool.

Tune Out EVERYONE At Work!. I work in an office that has all kinds of talkative women (not to be sexist, they just love to process out loud far more than men). Anyhow, I pair this app with Bose noise eliminating headphones and I've had the best concentration that I've had EVER! There's a meditative quality to this which makes the mind go into a trance state and makes focus outstanding. I used to listen to music at work, but I don't think music always matches the brain's natural waves...the way this generates sounds doesn't let you concentrate on the app, but it lets you concentrate on work. BIZ-NIZZ! Goodbye talkative chicks!

Could be better. Very good at what it does, but I have 2 suggestions. A bar showing time until repeat and a use for the 2nd dimension (like fade speed or amplitude).

Here come the warm jets. I want this application full screen on my iMac. Supercharge it with an update? If you do that I'll never quit. Transcendental.

Boring. Just trying to balance out some of the other reviews here. If you like ambient meditation type sounds, then I'm sure you'll love this, but if you're like me and buy this thinking it'll let you hear or create some interesting music, then you may not be so happy. Basically a very limited set of features - one style of sound, and when using the 'create' mode, the control over pitch is fairly random (no way of telling exactly what you'll get by pressing any point on the screen), and also no way of tracking the beat, or timing of the loops etc. Also, the bass notes are practically inaudible over the iphone speaker (better using headphones, but hey!) Interesting for 5 mins, but boring after that.

Disappointed. I feel stupid but I have no idea how to use this app; I have a feeling I'm not experiencing its full potential. Not everyone has used a music synthesizer before; it would have been a good idea to add a help tool or at least explain the basic functions.

Excellent. Similar to electroplankton on DS, but with only one mode. The iPhone/touch needs more apps like this.

Brilliant!!. The BEST app on here by far! Just wish you could record your pieces and have a different instrument other than the piano sound but these are minor problems! Thanks heaps!

eno to go. Very impressive. Now I don't have to buy another Eno album again.

Gorgeous!. My all time favourite app for my iPhone. Impossible to describe, but beautiful to explore for hours on end. Why 4 stars then? Because it doesn't have a record function, which is a pity as you can't save your work. That's a real shame as I'd like to record my first album with Eno! (wouldn't we all!) LOL!

Good app. I'll tell everyone to try it if it can be a little bit cheaper

A cure for insomnia. I love brian eno and his Ambience for Airports music. With bloom I can now turn on my iphone and sleep on those long and restless no-frills flights at midnight and rest comfortably waking up with such a fulfilling sleep. I only wished it had a record or save button to save my sometimes-awesome compositions though. Great app!

Love it, BUT. Export? Esprcially for the price, should be able to export "compositions". You lose a couple of stars for that. :-(

I can' stop. Love is a drug called Bloom. Blooming brilliant. The guy is a genius. Apple should pay you Mr Eno for showcaseing the iPhone's potential.

Fantastic. I love this app, have used it for years, I still use it almost every day. The way I enjoy it is having my iPhone docked on a speaker next to my bed, set Bloom to listen & 60 min timer, then drift off to sleep before the timer runs out. Works every time. I never hear the end of it:)

Oh The Awesomeness. This is a fantastic app. Totally unique way to create music. I would imagine I'm not alone when I beg the creators to get to work on a midi controller version of this (as in the iPhone being the controller). Excellent app.

A simple masterpiece. I bought this app based on knowing the name of Brian Eno, not knowing what to expect. At first I was looking for all the buttons, to be a little disappointed. What I found was pure creativity, simple, but yet so wonderfully conceived. A truely calming, pleasurable experience that opened my mind for imagination and delight! I anticipate future updates!!

My Favourite App. This app is a true gem (an opal to be exact) My kids gravitated to it like magnets. They now insist on going to sleep with opal generating on the bedside table between them. I love it too and can listen and fiddle for hours. I look forward to enrichments to the software, but is very cool indeed, just as it is.

Yep this is a good one. Wow I like it! Simple, well thought out app, innovative and quite simply, fun. In my opinion worth the money.

Amazing!. I loved Eno's 77 Million Paintings ad this is just as amazing! Relaxing and beautiful to watch and play. So glad I bought it.

An Amusing Novelty and Not Much More. Now I know that $5 is mere pocket change, but in comparison to most apps available in the App Store (and this is the comparison that is most salient), $5 is at the higher end of apps. And--as much as I hate to admit it--the score one gives is relevant to the price of the app. The higher the price, the more one expects. At $1.19 or around the $2 mark, this app would get 3 or possibly 4 stars from me, however for $5 I expected a lot more. I found that the sounds produced are fairly limited, and (as a previous reviewer noted) with the "mood" setting merely effecting the colour of the visuals (which aren't that elaborate or aesthetically impressive anyway). The variety of compositions available with this app are really very limited. Although I did enjoy the few sounds and melodies I created in the first few minutes, I then found that they clear from repetition too quickly to be enjoyed or expanded upon. It really is a fairly basic program that doesn't seem to have been worked upon or expanded greatly since its inception, and although many reviews suggest this is some sort of revelation, I think it's just a mere novelty at this stage ... with the price of a complex and well updated app. This has to be one of my most disappointing purchases.

Relaxing with your creativivity. very relaxing and definately worth the price, a must have for every iphone, ipod touch user ...

Can only get better with time. Bloom is wonderfully enjoyable and immensely relaxing. It takes the idea of the sequencer and breaks it down into something less structured and more intuitive. A few additional controls would serve to increase the experience even more; - the inclusion of additional instruments/sounds. - pressure sensitivity for altering keystroke volume. - control over number of delay loops. - ability to record sessions (in bloom format for later play/restore). All in all a fantastic app which I recommend to those looking for an involving way to relax to ambient piano sounds.

This is magic and wonder!. Bloom is the best iPhone app ever, period. It's fun, magic, joyful, wonderful, mistery, always different, so minimalistic, colored, but not only. Now anyone can create his own mood color visualizer sonograph and travel for a while in a fantastic, personal, neverending emotional discovery.

Disappointed. I liked this at first. Given the talent involved in the creation of Bloom, I thought this app would be improved with updates for reputations sake, if nothing else. Like the program supposedly does itself, I expected it to evolve with user suggestions in updates. But face it, this one was dumped here and soon forgotten. The obvious possibilities for improving this app being ignored for so long have left me disappointed to say the least.

Love it. I bought this before the update and was very impressed, now after the update it's even better. With new modes and sounds you can play or just sit back and listen. Nice one!

Thank you Brian!. I can spend hours on this one! Simple, easy to use! It is a delightful app!

Everybody is right - Fantastic. I ummed and ahhhed over this. Finally weakened and bought it. You start out thinking this is good, then you realize it gets better as you develops and change themes. Great !!

Creative. Engaging Ambience.. A wonderful addition to my iPhone. I have composed and played lovely ambient music with Bloom. So much more satisfying than just playing games, this application has an elegant simplicity at it's heart.

Very impressed. This app is magic. I had no idea what it did when I bought it, but it had such good reviews that curiosity overcame me. And I'm very delighted to say that it is the most beautiful, relaxing and intriguing invention ever.

Wonderful, compelling, hypnotic. I intially delayed getting this because I am not really into "whale music"/ambient music and I wasn't sure how much use I would get out of it. However curiosity luckily got the better of me and I bought it. It gets more addictive the more you play with it - I was worried the novelty would wear off, like it does with a lot of apps, but in this case you love it more and more. It is soothing, fascinating, hypnotic. I give it four stars not five because there are some features that could be improved/added. I thought one would be able to choose different kinds of instruments/tones, but you can't, just different pitches. The tone it uses is very beautiful though. As others have mentioned, you can't hear the low notes through the iPhone speakers so do try headphones. Adding a record function would also be great. I also wondered if there would be some musical significance to the different "moods", but they currently seem to be just different, though very pretty, colour schemes. All in all this is a wonderful app, fully functional and brilliant as it is, but as you play with it you kind of think of more things it could perhaps be doing. You also start thinking of hardware that could allow you to project its patterns on a wall while music comes out of decent proper-size speakers.

A beautiful twist on composition.. All I can say is this is amazing. The interface is easy to use and I'd recommend it for anyone who needs some meditation music or for anyone looking for am interesting new way to make music.

Wonderful!. This is a fantastic app! Buy it now! 2 requests for updates, option to change sounds and a timer so that it can play me to sleep and then switch off. Oh and the full screen iMac version would be awesome as well! Thanks for making a great app!!!!

Great!. This is a nice little app - will be cool to see how it evolves. Wish there were more creative apps like this one available.

Absolutely Fantastic.... Absolutely fantastic, can play with this App for hours on end and never get bored.

Benchmark app. Groovy and trippy. I can play with this for hours layering sound and rhythm. Simple but mesmerizing.

Amazing. I wasn't sure at first what this application actually did even after reading the description. I knew it made music and that's it. However it's the most wonderful application. With the touch of your finger you can make the most beautiful sounds that over time turn into a mesmerizing, calming & soothing sound to take you away from the hustle & bustle. I would like to see the ability to record your musical creations on the iPhone somehow, the ability to use different instruments and the ability to set up Bloom to play for a set amount of time before fading down over a minute or two & the application closing. Perfect for falling asleep. Well done on a most creative and amazing application that allows even the non musical to make the most beautiful music. I hope there's more updates and features to come. If this is version 1 of Bloom, I can't wait to see (and hear!) what future releases hold in store. Well done..

Awsome. This is a great little music app - I am a pro musician and have had a lot of fun with it and love seeing how excited others are (non musicians especially) are when they try playing it - great job - thanks. WOuld be terrific if we could change the instrument from the piano, could send out MIDI wirelessly from the app and could record the pieces that are generated

Mesmerising music generator. This was one of my first apps on the first iPod touch. It remains one of my favourites. Incredibly simply but completely captivating.

very very neat. I love this, Eno to go, or try and emulate the master. Just so cool. Maybe for a future update, a timer to turn itself off after a certain time would be nice. Nice for bed time and drifting off to sleep. Thank you guys Richard

Freakn Awesome. Amazing App.! Woul dlove to see in the next update: • Variable Sequencer Controls • More Tones/Sounds - Organ/Guitar/Kalimba • Record Function • Additional FX Please....

Amazing.. Just wonderful. Eno has once again proven that he is the king of ambient music. This is by far my favourite app.

Still no save??. Bought this years ago....still no save option, export ....?

Ready for more options. Stunning app, use it to show off the capability of the iPhone. The second dimension definatelty needs to be utilized though. Time for an update.

Best iPhone App!. Mr Eno has done it again. This is a beautiful app! Hopefully it doesn't end here and they continue to update 'bloom' with more features. Extra moods, instruments, more ambient background tracks. Thanks for now Eno!

Great. The latest update makes a great app even better - just the best generative music app I've found.

Hypnotic. Looking at the reviews of this app. It is easy to see that many people are besotted by features. Even when extra features are usually the hallmark of an inferior main act. Sigh. Well this program gives you less, but what it gives you is beautiful and hypnotic. You can see a run down of what it does elsewhere but know that this is a wonderful little box of sounds. What I love about it is that it makes a musical arrangement completely visual, allowing you to see the phrases and motifs you have entered. This effect is quite emotional and entirely appropriate. It's interesting that almost a thousand years of musical notation has never tapped into this. I could see children learning to writ music with this app. If I could be developed to show pitch and a few other elements, it could also serve as an educational tool. Of course that is not what it is at this point. Right now, it is simply a transfixing ambient music generator. Well done on this.

Genius.. Eno does it again. This simple app has lifted the bar so high regarding iPhone apps. Art meets music for the masses. Yay.

Just ok. It's relaxing, it's pleasant, but it really doesn't go anywhere, and at a 'premium app' price, I expect a bit more. Not recommended unless the price comes down.

Soothing. This app is strangely mesmerizing and relaxing. I've been listening to it for almost an hour since downloading it. Sorry, but I must return to Bloom now..... Cannot resist

Magical. This magical app is a simple way to relax, go to sleep or get creative. I’ve had it for years and have never tired of it. Highly recommended for insomnia and stress. Set the timer and drift off. It has an interactive mode or you can set it to self play.

Best iPhone application yet. An amazing use of the iPhone. This is the kind of app I'd happily pay $10 for.

Nice and simple. People are always asking for more features but I like the simplicity of this app. I don't have to make a tonne of choices and it's very relaxing. Keep it simple!

WOW. OHHHHHH this app makes my soul explode with joyfulness! ITS THE best app out there for relaxing. Just some ideas for possible updates - being able to hold the notes longer by holding your finger down and maybe a wider range of low notes. This is going to keep me busy for years to come!

Elegant & Enjoyable. My girlfriend is rarely impressed with an app but when she used this one, she said that she might buy an iPhone Touch just to use it. While I wouldn't go that far, I certainly recommend it.

Brilliant. Quite possibly the best app ever.

An elegantly designed app that hides what's really going on behind the scenes. As a musician, computer programmer now working primarily on designing user interfaces, I'm deeply appreciative of the elegant design that hides what's really going on behind the lovely hypnotic bubbles. A nice nod to the world of scent and perfumery in the choices of "mood" names. A couple of possible improvements: 1) ability to load/save compositions 2) a more immediate way to access "delay" as a composing mechanism--I'm using "delay" to create loops of varying length. All the other features under "control" don't affect the composing process and apply when you're done with a loop. Would love to be able to vary the "evolve" factor so different sequences have different half lives :) But over all, very, very awesome. I'm hooked!

Bloom. Very cool!

EASY AND FUN. super simple to use, instantly fun, you just turn it on and go, not much to learn, and it can even play itself if you want! relaxing. use it on your next flight!

Whoa. Was disappointed for a minute, then realized Im an impatient idiot. This is an amazing app.

Amazing app. I really enjoy this app, you can come up with an infinite amount of melodies that are nice to relax to. It would be great if you could slide between notes or even hold a note for longer to give the note more sustain. I would have also liked to be able to play around with backround ambience, but that's the thing about this app its really fun and it leaves you wanting more features to play with.

Bloom App. Great creative application that is wonderful therapy after a hard day.

Very nice - but Needs work. Nice background music and cool ability to add notes but needs some enhancements: 1) add ability to record and save your compositions! 2) scale overlay - so you can see the range instead of guessing 3) remove a note placed by double tapping it or it will endless repeat; move notes around by dragging 4) some sort of sequencing ability so you can make compositions 5) add strings please! Piano is great and combined with strings would be surreal

Inane Orb Strikes Again. A natural extension into the portable computing realm of Eno's experiments with generative music and the technologies associated...remains to be seen (in light?) if additional soundsets or formulas will make it into free updates, or if we'll be shelling out more $$$ for additional aesthetics.

One of the most fantastic app for your mind. Go get it, it worth the money. Less less than a ticket for a movie, or a burger.

Not nearly as interesting as the reviews say. I'm not sure what others are doing with this app but if they're legit then these people must also be entertained by wind chimes too. There really isn't anything terribly interesting about this app and it's certainly nothing very advanced or exciting. Considering it's price I was really expecting more. Grew tired of it within a few minutes. Gave it another chance later and the sane thing happened. Save your money and don't buy this one.

Still amazing.. Thank you for the update. This is still one of the most enjoyable music apps for iOS.

Pretty good, but.... This app is pretty good. It's relaxing, and it allows for creativity with music. I've got 2 issues with it, though: 1) The music pretty much dies if I turn my screen off (background sound continues), and suddenly compensates when I turn the screen back on. 2) Sometimes when I'm trying to relax it seems like the notes come in a little strong. An option to have the notes crecsendo in would be nice. Different instruments, instrument sets, even random chords instead of notes would also be a welcome bonus. I'd be willing to pay for a premium version with that on it.

Very cool..... Great app, I bust it out when I got five minutes of quiet time, calms you down. Also, great for kids my daughter plays it and gets into it, she's three!!! Thx.

Worth 5 even with the crackle...... without it I probably would't be wasting time writing this review, so busy would I be playing with this remarkable app. I wrote the developers and Peter Chilvers said the crackle seems limited to the new Touches, and that they are working with Apple to solve the problem. Since Bloom was released about the same time as the new Touches it would be unfair to give it anything but the highest rating it deserves. For 4 bucks Eno's practically giving you the keys to the vault with this program. A reward, perhaps, for those of us who have supported his musical adventures all these years. Many, many thanks and I look forward to the crackle fix.

Inspirational. Delightful, seductive and innovative.

Released 10 Years Ago. And still au courant... Brian Eno blended sound and movement to create this breakthrough app. Sublime ambient music in connected loops, circling, swirling and forever changing. I was one of the first to buy this 10 years ago and I gave it a glowing review, I still love it. If anything, I appreciate it more now than I did 10 years ago. A must-have for ambient lovers.

Pure Genius. If you like the style of Brian Eno or Robert Fripp, you will be amazed and delighted. No bugs on my iPhone. You'll create music like you never did on your iPhone.

Bloom!. Oh man, I love this app so much. The music is like pouring honey into my ears. I listen to this one all the time and I can't seem to get sick of the melody.

Give me my bass back !. A good item, used it a lot. However since last update bottom 1/3 of the screen - the bass - does not produce sound. Rebooted, took it off, put it on ... no bass ! Give me back my bass !!! I am not buying your other two until this is fixed. I want my BLOOM back !

Almost Relaxing. I didn't use this app as much as I hoped to due to the extremely high pitched notes that Bloom sometimes produces. Still decent tho if you select the right mood. However, these developers made an even better app called Air. Be sure to check that one out first.

Perfect iPhone App. This is the perfect iPhone app. It's deceptively simple and makes great use of the iPhone's touch screen. The random musical patterns sound great. The raindrop patterns are very soothing. My only complaint is that there is nothing more. I'd like to see other apps like this. I'd like to be able to drag my finger across the screen and have it play that instead of only picking up discreet touches. I'd like there to be a difference in notes from top to bottom on the screen (not just side to side.) I'd like the program to sense how hard I tapped the screen and adjust the volume accordingly.

Fantastic. Great for ambient sound and for creative music exploration too!

Neat. I like this app, but to me the gushing five star reviews seem a bit excessive. It is cool, yes. It is unique too, but I got bored after playing with / listening to it two or three times. It's very simple and basic- some different sounds ( like percussion) would probably make me play with it more. Very deserving of four stars, but not five at present IMHO.

Worth every penny. If you're an Eno fan, this is definitely worth getting. Think of it more as an interactive Eno installation than a music making app. True Eno fans will know what I mean. I find Bloom very addictive.

Music for Space Ports. A lovely tool for creating ambient soundtracks on the fly and then drift off into deep lucid dreaming. The Music for Airports original still rocks but creating your own sequences is blissfully effortless. XLNT!

Worth it. Even as someone who likes ambient music I hesitated at the price...but it turned out to be worth it. Simple but pleasing. ...Except when I let it play through the stereo it really creeped out the cat. He was not a fan at all--especially of the high note--he crawled off and hid.

Very relaxing. Ahh...

simply fantastic. I love this app... fantastic to study to and fun to play with. Very mellow ambience to work to

Very impressed.. I have to say, no other application has captured me over and over like Bloom has. It's replay value and rewarding results really make you want to play with it forever. Easily my favourite app out there.

Awesome app!. Well worth the money Nice to put on when you're trying to relax or do homework or something

Moods. The "moods" are various scents.

Absolutly beautiful. This is an original, beautiful app. Well worth the price. Wow. So simple and yet so much room for ceativity and relaxation. Thank.

Weak sauce. I was expecting more variety in sound types. Bloom is pretty much a one trick pony. Two bucks, not four.

Beautiful app. Very simple and elegant music machine. Worth purchasing!

Blah. Gives me a head ache after a few minutes. Don't understand the types if 'moods', would better appreciate names if moods that have descriptive English names.

Annoying. I've enjoyed all of the ambient music I've ever heard - before this. It's really annoying after about the first 30 seconds, or so.

artist. bore bore bore

yes!. buy this if you love ambient, medidative sounds and colors.

Amazing Experience. An outstanding achievement and a sign of things to come - developers take heed of this app! I had a great time walking through the Art Gallery of Ontario, "composing" a unique piece of music for each room "on the fly" as it were. 3 hours of great fun. On the downside, you're basically just playing variations of the same tune - playing within some scales predefined by Brian Eno. So you can't really compose your own stuff here, but it's still a really great, intuitive way to sequence loops. Still, you can't go wrong with this, whether you're a musician or not. It's so easy to use your grandmother can be creating haunting ambient tunes instantly.

Omggg :O. This is realy baad. I didnt know that it's for relax soo.. Baaaah, maybe thaat in the futur it gonna be a nice apps for me buut not now. Im not saying that this is a not good game.. But for the person like me, like the person who have 12 years old, this is very boring! But heheee dont forget this a good game if you have nothing to dooo and that your are nervouus LOLL

Beauty!. Beautiful! Feels like being inside the next “ambient music for airports” Brian Eno album

The champion of music apps. This app engages the mind and heart, as tonal patterns converge and diverge under the user's touch. This is a beautifully conceived and implemented musical experience.

Magical. This is an incredible application. If you like ambient music and want some pretty drops of colours to dazzle your screen, then jump into Bloom. The sounds are full and beautiful, the visual representation is simple and elegant, and the places that you can escape to have no limits.

Cool app. Very cool app, but I except to have the air play feature for the price!

Awesome. There should be tons of apps like that.

Eno can do better. Not worth money yet. It's like an intro to something that could be somewhat useful to electronic musicians. I'd like to turn off the background drones, or manipulate them myself. Also the ability to mix layers would have been easy to implement. Please update with anything of the sort.

Lifesaver. This is absolutely my favorite App for the iPhone. I stumbled across it the night my twin girls were born. A week later I find that I have it playing for their afternoon nap everyday. They quite enjoy it! I grew up listening Eno and they in their own digital age will as well. I have always enjoyed his deck of Oblique Stratagies which I often use in the studio. Truly Bloom is a new world digital music box. A golden lullaby machine. Cheers, Michael

One of the nicest things about my iPhone. A big thank you to the inventors. My two dogs and I get magical deep uninterrupted hypnotic rest from the evolving melodies i program in every night using the Neroli mood setting. Mr. Eno, you have created a tool of peace. Would that everyone could use it. Modifications I suggest are: 1: Include the normal iPhone "timer to screen-off" because the device gets extremely hot when running all night on its charger with the screen on; could be a potential battery problem too. 2: Enable Bloom to resume audio after being interrupted by an incoming call or other alert - the screen comes back with patterns still visible, but without audio. Thanks again for a wonderful instrument. Namaste.

Simple app, simply love it!. Of All the other suggestions for "improvements" I have only 1 suggestion/request, and that's for a percussive instrument/tone or 2. A deep thud drum, and maybe a violin-esque instrument. These would allow for a more transcending sound, without the pings of the piano. I use this app while at work- I can create custom music, which is a nice change from the music I've already heard a thousand times in my itunes library.

Needs more variety. This might sound stupid for an "ambient" music generator, but I think this things needs more variety. It needs more sounds, and more interactivity. It would be interesting it tilting it did something, or dragging, or pinching. It could translate gesture to moods or themes. That would be cool. As it is, it's just a drone with echoing piano plinks. Maybe it's more sophisticated under the hood than it sounds, but I think I would go on a shooting spree if I had to listen to this for more than an hour. I love Eno, and I "get it," I just wish there was more variety.

Well done.. I appreciate this app as a musician and as a software engineer. I would like to see them add the ability to choose a different primary tone, like a pad-like tone, or some kind of bowing type sound. However, for a 1.x release, this is very nicely done. My 13-year-old daughter especially likes this app (she's playing with it right now before she does the dishes). She said Bloom is the first she'd get if she ever had an iPhone.

Temporarily Interesting, But Not Deep. It's amusing for a short period of time, but there are a lot more advanced/different things they could offer for generative music, that would be both more interactive and long lasting. Many of these are available on the web as basic flash applets, or even in javascript. Bloom here is pretty, but not something I go back to on a regular basis. It's also not really that deep if you want to compose something that sort of fits a particular mood. I do not find it was worth the money spent on it.

Groovy!. I absolutely love it. I enjoy a wide range of ambient, new-age and nature recordings, but I've found nothing of the sort as relaxing as Bloom. My hopes in an upgrade include a selection of sounds (synth, deep chimes, water drops...), a sweeping function like that accross a harp or keyboard, and something especially cool would be surround sound (perhaps via USB/iTunes). Yeah, surround sound would be totally trippie. Even as-is, I feel it's worth the 4 bucks; I was skeptical at first, but I've used it frequently without loss of interest.

music is heaven. First off i had to do a double take when i saw the name Brian Eno!! It was kind of coincidental because i just picked up his David Byrne album collaboration. I bought this app based on the Eno name. Its very cool... I only wish you could do swipes to create different sounds instead of just taps. But, im very pleased with this now, and look forward to all the updates....:)

Most Unique and Amazing IPhone App. Without doubt a wonderful way to meditate and create generative music. Also a very good implementation and perfect for the IPhone. Would be nice to have some alternative user-controlled tones other than the default piano. However, the piano rendering is excellent and it is elegant in its simplicity. Would be even better if Bob Fripp colloborated with the team on some of the generative drones. But I am only dreaming.

Ambien(t). This app was my first favorite. Since, I have found many new favorites, but BLOOM still holds it's own. It would seem boring if I was into really lame music. But I love eno, cage, basinski, etc so I love BLOOM! Think of it like having a piano in a world where you're floating in purple slow motion, and you'll be happy. It's a live looper, also, but you'll never know when it's about to loop, so get creative! My only beef is UPDATE! Make it audiobus compatible and port it to iphone 5s. Give me the ability to have a midi clock sync. Plz!!!!

Great for Eno fans. This is one of the best apps on my iPhone. It's like having Brian Eno in my pocket (in the musical sense, of course). Very calming and simple. Listen to it when you need to collect yourself. Only wish there were a few more options and the ability to save & convert the tracks to listen to on other devices. Still, one of the most perfect apps for this platform.

Crackles and pops on my new Touch...are now gone with new update!. Hopeful for an update soon; otherwise this app would have received the full five stars. Very unique audio-video experience...great for relaxation. Splurge and pay the four, you won't regret it (just as long as they fix that crackle). Update Oct. 25, 2008: All's well (no more crackling)...now deserves a full five stars...thank you.

Delightful and Magical Musical Fun. Almost everyone I show this app to is delighted by the simplicity and beauty of the app. It is a pure delight to tap on the screen and make looping ambient songs. What starts out as a basic colored screen, transforms into a palette of round raindrops of music as you interact and perform with the app. And with smart intelligence built in, you can feed it a few notes and get hours of ambient background music in return.

Superfly.. When I come across apps like this in the store, it really makes me happy about my hardware purchase and the iphone/ipod touch as a platform. It's wonderful just to leave on and dabble away at it while working, it makes me really wish there was something like this in a desktop screensaver version. My only guff with this app is the consistent cracking sound it makes in the high end samples (maybe due to the low quality?) I can only hope this is fixed in the a future update!

I don't get it.... This app is the perfect example of a good idea that has been poorly executed. It has the semblance of ingenuity but you are basically listening to and/or watching colored circular representations of random notes which are mostly dissonant and therefore slightly unnerving. The repetitive nature of the sounds is creepy rather than relaxing. Maybe if it played well known classical music it would be better. The mood names are unfamiliar and seem pretentious. Ylang? Really? The colors are about the only redeeming quality to the app. I had one of those disco lights that would keep time with the music about 40 years ago - I liked it better. Can someone take this "diamond in the rough" and make something useful out of it?

Would have been 5 if not for crackling (updated. As of writing, there is a serious bug with this app that causes a 'static'ey crackling noise on the iPod Touch 2G. I hope it gets fixed because this app is awesome. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch 1G then don't even hesitate to buy this, but if you have a Touch 2G then you probably want to wait to get this until after it gets fixed. Edit: It's fixed! Five stars for a great app. I use this all the time to tap out a nice little loop and take a nap.

I LOVE Brian Eno!!. This app is fantastic!. Just how fantastic... I'm extremely passive when it comes to posting reviews. I have over 50 apps on my device, and this one is the first to inspire me to post some remarks. I actually dropped the Binaural Beats app to make room for this one. Bottom line... If you're looking for a 'soothing sounds' relax app, this one is great! And if you're an Eno fan and/or a fan of ambient music, this is a must-have!

Bloom is a wonderful interface to generative music. Thank you for a wonderful app! I get lost in the creation of patterns of sound. Simple intuitive interface allows for the musician to focus on nothing but touches of sound!!! Brilliant. Wishes for 2.0? Swipe the screen to control delay or other controls directly on the surface instead of a tabbed interface. Thank you so much! I'll be sharing with others. All the best!

Nice but only one set of sounds. Boring quickly.. Nice music App. The design and implementation are well thought out. Quite disappointing as there is only one set of sounds no matter what mood you choose. You get one timbre for melodies and one for drones. Each mood should have it's own sound set, or there should be a selection to choose from. What you have is basically one soundscape with few possibilities. Instead of being a great application it's quite marginal. After 5 minutes it got really old......

Fun to Play With, Perfect for Getting Work Done. On top of being beautiful (to look at and listen to), Bloom is a great time-waster. I can sit down for hours just punching away at the screen creating music, but where this app truly shines, I think, is in its ability to create its own music. I've found that letting the app play itself creates the perfect kind of unobtrusive, patternless music that lets me concentrate and get work done. Well worth the $4 just for its ability to help me get stuff done.

Eno on iPhone... enough said!. I'll admit that I'm biased, because I think that Brian Eno is a God, and love just about all of his work. But even so... this program, for less than FOUR dollars, not only gives you an original Eno composition, but allows you to create your own version of it. Electronica and especially Ambient music fans need to get this. It's also a great tool for stress relief--just try it out and you'll see what I mean.

LOVE it. Stunning but simple. This is probably the best app I have purchased yet. I sat and played with this app/instrument with a friend for nearly an hour last night and we only stopped because it got late and I needed to leave, not because we got bored with it. I am looking forward to seeing updates to this app and more from this developer. Wonderful.

Wow.... This app could not be Better! It seems like any melody u type comes out beautiful. I used it to help me sleep last night, and it worked beautifully. The design is simple enough for even a child to use, and even simpler to play with. Ull be creating wonderful songs very soon. Only thing that would be cool to add is a timer that shuts off the app when you use it at night like I do.

Pure pleasure!. I had no idea that I'd fall in love this app when I read about it and decided to try it! I've been a Brian Eno fan forever, especially his ambient experiments and this is like having your own ambient sound box in the palm of your hand! Time and space simply cease to apply when playing this app. You don't so much control what's going on as have a kind of conversation with it... fall into it and forget everything! The sounds, colors and pure spacey-ness are absolutely wonderful. And it's cheaper than a cappuccino!

Almost perfect. I have enjoyed creating ambient music for years. Because of my great respect for Brian Eno as an ambient artist I was intrigued when I read about this app. It is a wonderful instrument and clearly has been influenced by Eno's recent multi-media art/music adventures. The only imperfection us the lack of variable instrumentation. While each "mood" will change the colors and possibly the octave it is always the same instrument. It would be nice to change the pads or even just modify tone or resonance of the primary instrument. Otherwise it is a great app and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic so far. There are certainly a couple of features I would like to see, such as more synths, and biggest of all, accellerometer influenced synthisizing to follow a beat (walking) or direct music generation based on accelleration (think waving iPhone around in the air). The only other issue is the crackling sound the 2g touchers are getting, only I have a 1st Gen iPhone and it only happens when I touch the metal on the back or have it plugged into the wall. But all in all no major complaints, and other than the one technical issue, this app is simply amazing.

Love this app!. I listen to this all the time and it's my number one app! It's so calming and great background noise for when I'm focusing on other things. However it's also very interactive and creative too! I wish they'd add a timer feature to it though so that I can listen to it at night as I go to sleep. Also, I would like to see a "sleep" (or maybe "audio only") mode--where the screen turns off, but the "music" plays on. The visual eats my battery if I'm just playing it in the background. :o(

Relax and chill out with this great app. I love this app. I love the generator and using it as an instrument. I've plugged it into my home stereo for ambience and jammed out with in a comfy chair. I use it for end of day lullabies that are never the same twice. It sounds great. Opal Limited has done a fantastic job making something new and visually beautiful. I've used this for hours and it's never crashed, never caused a problem and works flawlessly. What more could you ask for? This is a page one app for any ambient music lover.

so perfect!!!. Really quite astounding! Spent hours of creative bliss after purchase. So intuitive, beautiful and perfectly suited to iPhone. Brought it to band practice tonight- we were having an "acoustic" session... lyre, violin, voice, guitar and hand drums. After the lyre intro I brought in the BLOOM. Like ethereal bells in a fairy church the sounds were perfectly in tune with the song. I created some sparse patterns, then picked up my violin and jammed over the top. The patterns kept evolving during the whole song and made a beautiful outro. A real musical instrument!!!

Relax with this App.. This App is very relaxing and worth the $4. Not only do you get to create some relaxing sounds, you get to see your pattern come to life. The App is very easy to use... just simply tap the screen and make magic. The lower you tap on the screen, the lower the tone... the higher you tap, the higher the tone. I would like to see more layers in the update & be able to choose my own background sounds.

Incredibly Relaxing And Entertaining. This has got to be one of the most incredible and entertaining apps on the app store. Bloom lets you create ambient melodies and sounds. It is blissful and wonderful—it gives you a level of creativity that very few apps can. And it is beautiful to watch and listen to. I have literally spent hours playing with Bloom. If anything, I should knock off a star simply for being too addictive. I recommend it fully!

Wonderful Creativity. Great application, part music, part graphic art, 100% relaxing... the latest version [available as a free update to those of us who already bought 'Bloom'] corrects the crackling problem experienced on some devices. I'm using it on my shiny new iPod touch as I write this, so I think I'll just drift on off with a smile on my face...

Just plain Wow!. I have been a Brian Eno fan for years, and have several of his CDs on my iPod for long flights...but THIS is supercalifragilistic AND expialidocious. It lets you create your own Thursday Afternoons or 77 Million Paintings by simply tapping on the screen; the bubbles arise along with the music; the whole thing creates an ambient sound-and-picture show that takes your breath away (well, takes MY breath away), in a very soothing, ambient way. Try that on your Blackberry!

Needs more control. This is a very interesting app and with its simplicity comes beauty. That being said it still needs more control for variety. One thing that immediately comes to mind would be a continuos tone along with the "percussive" aspect. Drag your finger up and down for tone, left to right for volume. Easy enough to implement. A slider control along one edge could enable control of many variables. One review likened this to an instrument, but it is not. It is much too limited for that. Electroplankton on the DS is much more fleshed out, though it also falls short of an instrument.

Simply Amazing ! !. I have never bothered to take the time to write a review on any of the 20 or so apps I have downloaded, but Bloom is so amazing I just had to review it. If you enjoy Brian Eno's music you will absolutely love this app. The beauty lies in its simplicity and the ability to not just listen, but to create. I love the fact that there are no keys or chords to remember; Bloom allows everyone to be a musician. This free-flow type of music creation exemplifies the beauty of ambient music.

Good app, could be great.... if the developer could add Open Sound Control (OSC) so it can be used to control other softsynths. Imagine using its cool interface to control Logic's Sculpture, for example. That would open up many more possibilities other than Bloom's stock Harold Budd-like piano sound. I think OSC controlling a softsynth on another computer is the way to go, rather than trying to add too many synth features to Bloom itself.

Seriously Mesmerized!. Get it! This App is fantastic! An artful, beatifully designed ambient music generator by Mr. Ambient himself, Brian Eno. Careful, very addictive...it just puts you in a great space and you will feel like a musical genius as you create an ever-evolving sonic atmosphere. I cook up a group of motifs and hook the thing to my stereo and just let the music take off. One of the greatest things I have seen for the iPhone. The real deal and WORTH the price!

Truly a masterpiece. I was skeptical at first because of tue reports of crackling sound, and i half suspected that the developer wrote all the five-star reviews. However, after playing with this for the past twenty minutes (without hearing a single snap, crackle, or pop (on a first gen iTouch)), i can honestly say that this is now one of my favorite apps, and i'm looking forward to more features, though with all the different "moods" there is plenty to keep me occupied. A great way to spend $3.99.

it's brian's world...... as william burroughs almost said, eno is a virus from outer space. we now have multiple possiblitiies for iphone infection. two requests: 1. can bloom include an option to continue playing when I switch to other apps (so I can consult oblique strategies while blooming)? 2. it would be nice if the notes I enter keep the same rhythm when they repeat, but gradually change pitch. a prediction: we will soon see the release of a line of eno perfumes to go with bloom's mood names.

Perfect ambient music generator. I'm not sure what the complainers are looking for, but might I suggest either iFart mobile or Be Like Lil Wayne? Anyone who is a fan of Eno or ambient/minimalist music in general needs to buy this app. One if the coolest features is tapping out a few patterns and then setting the iPhone down. Eventually you start to hear the patterns evolve and reemerge, against a new drone and in a new context. Totally relaxing and really, really well done. Even better through a good pair of headphones.

Best music app ever! And more.. One of my very favorite apps of the many that are in my iPhone 4. It has sustained my interest for a few years now as an uncomplicated way to generate ambient music. I've also found it a great way to relax before drifting off to sleep--more so than any kind of prerecorded music. The creative interface before sleep makes my night more restful and my dreams more interesting.

Surprisingly Good. I admit, I bought this on a whim, it looked neat. It turns out to be a truly creative application, it generates some great relaxing sounds either on its own or based on your tapping the screen. Great for getting a massage, or just tuning out the world around you. I'm not right brained at all - and i love this. It needs to shut off the display when idle.

Wow, this is no gimmick. What an interesting way to make music. I have one suggestion, and that is to be able to set the number of taps/notes, or at least allow the user to control the fade. That way you can keep tapping new melodies without too much overlapping. If you enjoy Brian Eno's ambient music, this app is for you. Well worth a few bucks.

My Favorite Program (So Far). I was attracted to this program initially because of the boundless imagination of Brian Eno; everything he commits to is worth experiencing IMHO. I was right to trust my instincts. This is a beautiful and fun program. I get a good deal of joy out of just a few minutes of play. On one hand, I wish I could save what I create, on the other hand, I suspect that my creations would be somehow deminished by capturing them—ruining their etherial and ephemeral quality.

Perfect baby toy!. My 11 month old neice LOVES this app! Whenever she sees my phone on the floor, she will crawl over to it and grab it. When I start up Bloom, she loves looking at the colors and hearing the sounds. The soothing, windchime-type music she makes has put her to sleep more than once. I just have to keep it out of her mouth... :-) Overall, great app, great sound, innovative and very entertaining- for kids of all ages!

Absolutely stunning. This app is unbelievably relaxing and mistifying. The sounds are brilliant. I have absolutely no idea what distortion other people are complaining about. The randomness of the sounds you create makes you want to keep playing with the app. So simple yet so profound! I could swear I couldn't count the times where I almost dropped my iPod while creating music because I have unknowingly fallen asleep already! Marvelous app!

Worth every penny. This app is fantastic, very relaxing and very fun to play. This is really the best app I own on my itouch, and the ability to let the app 'play itself' is great. It reminds me a lot of the game Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS, and if you have played that game this app is very simmilar. I would pay 10$ for this app it is so great. If you are a fan of ambient music this app is perfect.

Insomnia. I have partial insomnia. Some nights I'll sleep fine, while other nights I won't sleep at all. When I got this app, I realized it was perfect for falling asleep too. I put it on, and in about five minutes, not only is my ten year old sister asleep, but I'm dozing off, barely there. And when I do sleep, I feel rested. I really do love this app. 

A lovely, lovely program. This app creates peaceful music that is perfect for napping, doing yoga, meditating, or simply to move in the world with a beautiful relaxing soundtrack. This app is very simple to use, but not simplistic. An infinity of beautiful music, personally customizable by YOU! It seemed a bit pricey to me as I was pressing the "buy app" button... but I've now had it for a week, used it every day, and would pay twice the price for it. If you like Eno, you can't go wrong buying this.

Way Cool. This app is something I've been waitng to see for the past 10yrs. Truely an achievement for interactive art technology, available to everyone to explore. Medatative, entrancing, calming. It pulls me in and it really seems to have a spirit about it. Sometimes I am following it and sometimes it is following me. The only wishe I had for it would be to make the visuals even more interesting. If, say, the bubbles would morph into other things, like an ongoing hallucination, it could be very psychedelic. Its awesome to have this work of art in my pocket.
