Trope App Description & Overview

What is trope app? Trope, designed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician / software designer Peter Chilvers, expands further on the ideas introduced by Bloom, their acclaimed iPhone application.  Darker in tone, Trope immerses users in endlessly evolving soundscapes created by tracing abstract shapes onto the screen, varying the tone with each movement.

Recommended for headphones and external speakers.

"Trope is a different emotional experience from Bloom - more introspective, more atmospheric. It shows that generative music, as one of the newest forms of sonema, can draw on a broad palette of moods." - Brian Eno

Wonderful. My favorite of the three Eno apps. It allows you more control than the others, especially when holding a touch and dragging it about. Visually mesmerizing. Rich sound quality. A must have!

Doesn't work. I don't understand what the fuss is about this app. Other than my first few moves, it seems programmed. Hmm, maybe I'm missing something. I'll check online to see if there are better instructions.

I like Bloom slightly more. Cool sustained sounds. Still trying to figure it out. I like Bloom's more piano-like soundscapes more

Fantastic. I loved Bloom, but this is something else! The best generative music app I've ever used. It's a steal at this price.

Beautiful, but where's the variety?. Dubbed as an infinite array of sonic combinations, this app leaves me a bit disappointed in the realm of sonic variation. I've yet to make this app produce anything but the sound of an out-of-tune piano being played slowly underwater. The visuals are impressive but not much more so than the average mp3 player visualization.

Pioneering Genius. When Eno makes an app. You better listen. It doesn’t get any better for generative music than this one.

Works for me. There is an occasional crackle in the audio. I haven't downloaded the newest version yet to see if that has been corrected. In spite of that - this is my most used "go to sleep" app.

Great (but). I really love this app. It's a totally logical extension of Brian Eno's ambient music theories and methodologies for the 21st century. In addition, I'm a lifelong insomniac and since I've been listening to this in bed, I've been falling asleep considerably faster than usual. (FWIW, I slept restlessly with it playing all night. The sleep timer came in handy.) My one significant complaint though: I read about Trope in the iPhone edition of the music mag The Wire. However, when I try to open the magazine (in Newsstand) while Trope is playing in the background, the mag shuts down the instant after it opens. Trope is the only app that causes the mag to do this. If I could read The Wire and listen to Trope as I go to sleep, I'd be REALLY happy.

Lovely app, lately afflicted by a bug. Trope is, along with Bloom and Reflection, a wonderful collaboration between Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, fusing Eno's ideas about "generative music" with the computing power and portability of iOS devices. Compared to Bloom, Trope is more flowing though perhaps a bit darker. Unfortunately, as of iOS 10 this app seems to have developed a bug that speeds up the sleep timer and may also affect playback. While I recommend all these Eno/Chilvers apps very strongly, I'd suggest waiting for this to be patched.

My favorite music player. I listen and watch this app make music. I find this more enjoyable than a music service simply because it can shuffle the many moods and generates unlimited music. Each song being different and never the same. I use this more than any other music app, including my music subscription services!! I don’t make music with it, I just listen and let it come up with its own things. Simply amazing. Between this and reflection I have more ambient music than my iTunes library! Ha!

Absolute chilled awesomeness!. This was one of the first apps I bought when I got my very first iDevice and it still remains one of the most used and favorite apps I have downloaded. It's perfect for yoga or meditation, zoning out on a project, and just about anything else you need ambient background noise for. I just wish they would create a version for the Mac app store so I could have the wonderful beauty of this app on the much larger screen of my iMac.

Love it, but some problems with iOS6. This is one of my favorite apps. However, I am having some trouble with this as well as Air and Bloom and how they work in iOS6 on my iPod Touch. The sleep timer, which I have never had a problem with, doesn't work correctly, and the app will stay on. Hopefully this bug can be squashed when the developers update it. This is such a wonderful app, and the sleep timer is necessary for me.

Could be a great app.... ...if it weren't for the self generating notes. User sounds are nice and very Eno-esque. But the self generating notes spoil any creativity and takes what could have been a cool instrument and turns it into more of a novelty/toy. Too bad. Fix the self generation or give an option to turn it off.

Very relaxing. While other reviewers are correct that there is less control of the music produced with this app as compared with Bloom, I still prefer this app. The tones created are more sensuous and the sound is more seamless. I found it to be very relaxing and meditative. If you are a fan of Eno, especially his Ambient series, you will enjoy this app.

Perfect for drifting off to sleep. While fans of ambient will no doubt love this app, as an Eno fan it holds an even more special place in my heart. No longer will I be stuck listening to the likes of The Shutov Assembly when falling asleep at night as Trope contains many of the base elements that make Eno's compositions so dreamy and compelling. This app, along with Air (and Bloom to a lesser extent) really capture the mood of various Eno recordings over the years. If you're a fan of any of the Ambient series, The Shutov Assembly, or Neroli you'll love this app.

Simply mind blowing. Even if you are unaware of these artists, and perhaps have little interest in ambient music, the captative experience of illuminating your screen with delicate water colors that give way to subtle nuances of hums and drones will change your state of mind and actually put you in a better mood. Above all other applications that are supposed to make life simpler, this is something that we need more of. When you need to just relax, this is the best thing an iPhone can provide. Thank you Eno and Chilvers.

Awesome!. Hasn't been updated in forever - I love this app

Not very pretty on ears. The random pop up tones are louder then the other tones you can paint with or let play. If the pop up tones could be turned down and the other tones made louder this would help. Also, I think it would be great to have controll, in Bloom And Trone, over the drone tones that are always on.

Please read app makers. I love the concept but trope needs more sensitivity to the touches we make. You can hardly hear the sounds when you touch the screen hard. This results in basically only the background being heard. Please boost the volume of our touches and also add more variety of sounds, thanks.

Trope for the trifecta.. Another great music generator from the minds of Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers. Buying Trope was an easy decision after having enjoyed using Bloom and Air. This app is the perfect addition for fans of ambient music and the works of Mr. Eno.

Don't let the negative reviews turn you off. At first, I was taken aback by the large number of negative reviews. These must be people who do not like ambient music because I found this to be a wonderful app. If you like Eno's "Thursday Afternoon" and other slow-moving works, this is perfect. I am glad I bought it. Eno fans who bought "Bloom" will be very pleased by this.

Just not responsive.... It's similar to Bloom to be sure, but there is little feedback when u select the notes, hard to tell what u r doing, little difference between create and listen. I like the new droning moods, but maybe too subtle, also hate the grafix, touch the screen and u get an array of spots, why not just a wash of watercolors?

Love it. Warm, therapeutic, adult play, and--why not kids? They'd love it even if attention span would keep it short. Opens creative doors--the simplicity and perhaps even limited or focused direction of these glorious Eno apps are an asset, not a limitation.

Great!. Thank you for the update to now support playing Trope in the background! I love it :)

Excellent. Very cool graphics. Only issue is a bug that changes line type back 2 default after I erase no matter which 1 I choose.

Bloom Plus. While I enjoy Bloom quite a bit, the app feels a little too similar in my opinion. And it would certainly be a LOT more enjoyable if I didn't have to deal with the randomly-generated tones infringing on my efforts. Let's see an update on this please... I'd like to create my own soundscapes!

Works on iPad. For anybody that was misled by NAPSACK's review, iPhone apps can be loaded on your iPad. I have this app on both of my iPads, it is definitely a keeper.

Discreet Music, 35 Years Later. Beautiful. I enjoyed Eno's 1975 vinyl LP "Discreet Music" very much. It was created using a long tape loop between two reel-to-reel recorders with the erase head covered up. This is the same concept, 35 years later, and the whole thing fits in your pocket. It would be interesting to include a user sound input option. Maybe that will be included in the iPad version.

Really not an app. I liked it until I noticed that nothing I did really changed the annoying piano-synth sound. It's really just best to put it on Listen which is like auto and let Eno lull you to sleep. Indeed if you have trouble sleeping or want to waste your life this is the App for you. Worthless.

Different, but I like Bloom better. More trippy and fairly meditative, but Bloom gives more control to the operator. Trope has its place, but Bloom is still my favorite of this kind of app. There's room for both.

Subtler than Bloom. Some say Trope is not as responsife as Bloom. Not true. Each action by the finger is more like moving a finger over a lip of a crystal glass. Not like keystrokes on a synth like Bloom. I like it. It complements Bloom.

Wish it was available for iPad too.... I love this app. There is a multitasking option, so the review that states the app won't "freeze" when closed is inaccurate. I just wish this app was available for iPad as well.

Personally.... I think "Trope" is great. Admittedly, I bought it more to listen to it than to "play" it, and for listening, it's really nice. Quieter and more low key (no pun intended) than Bloom, which is also wonderful. The Opal generative music apps are the logical development of and perhaps the best format for Eno's ambient work. They provide something that "Discreet Music," "Music for Airports," et al suggest but can't deliver given the limitation of their medium: evolving, "perpetual" music.

iSublime. Like a moody, moving Morris Louis painting with soundtrack, more complex than Bloom (and less prone to New Age noodlings). Worth the price just to see the colors it can produce. There should be many, many more apps this inapplicable, so to speak. Could be one of the last great gasps of Romantic Modernism. Yes, I did say that in an app review.

Very nice. I am really discovering some nice results. Can we look forward to streaming to an airport express? The ability to listen on the home stereo and still have my phone close by would be Devine. Thank you.

better than Bloom!. I'm a huge Eno fan, so when I found out about Bloom I had to buy it, and that led me to Trope. Although Bloom may be more fun to play with than Trope, I find that Trope is better to listen to. It's easy to get it to play a slow, soothing pseudo-melody which is extremely relaxing. I don't think any of these apps are really off-the-charts outstanding, but this is a new way of making music and I'm impressed at how good it already is.

Very nice. If you like Eno's ambient work I can't see how you would be disappointed by Bloom, Trope or Air. They are all winners and completely worth the meager price.

Well. Well it's okay I guess I kind of expected more out of a Brian Eno app-definitely needs more options like copy paste music file, there's no way to save anything you create also the sounds are all pretty similar, it's alright to sleep to but really needs a lot more options and some moods that are actually different.

Self evolving soundscapes. Elegant app, sonically and visually. Why this stokes deep associations I don't expect to know. No lack of craft.

Grace. This is beauty ~ Brian Eno is genius for painting sound... Trope is my favorite of the Eno apps, and is the only reason I'm able to sleep most nights. I love it's Listen option and how you're able go set it to play for however long you'd like. (or let it run all night and see how it affects your dreams) It's simply mesmerizing, relaxing, and calms the mind. I recommend it for everyone. ~kaela m.

Unbelievable.. Serenity, makes you feel like you are floating in deep space, past the planets and moons, the stars...Beautiful. You do not want to miss this. Perfect for meditation or insomnia.

Amazing!. Eno has been trying to do generative music for 30 years. This app is the realization of his vision. I listen to it through the stereo while doing random things during my day. The sound and parts are tremendous. It's as Eno intended it. Thanks, Brian!

Amazing generative music app!. Was uncertain since app hasn’t been updated in 3 years; however, it works fine on my iPad Pro with iOS 11. Having been a fan of Brian Eno in my youth, I enjoy creating and listening to these ethereal and calming tones. How to use: Draw several lines or dots with your finger, then wait for the song to develop; the music will follow the patterns you created. Also, the neon color flows and geometrics are beautiful to behold! Very relaxing and meditative, for those into this genre.

Decent for some time. Could be much more representative of Eno's style of music creation. The tones are limited, there is no way to modify the attack of sounds or to make them last. Also there seems to be no way to switch off the random background noises that happen without the users control. Could be a great thing. I like the panning function where the sound is placed left or right depending on where on the screen you click. In Bloom it is much more intuitive to get used to the different moods (I understand they are just different modes of different keys as well as different colors). By 'get used to' I mean learning what each one actually changes and using it in combination with the echo in order to make interesting modulations and stuff of that nature. And there are 12 moods, like zodiac, that's cool. I feel like I have barely any control with Trope. Bloom is better for me in that respect, though I feel bloom is limited too. Cool stuff, but I'll stick to listening to Eno. Sorry but it just feels like Eno and Chilvers threw together a near interesting low grade simulation of ambient music that's prettier than it is usable and marketed it as four separate apps. That's genius I guess, and I'm gonna use it now that I spent the money on it. But for anyone looking for usability and playability, turn around and get something else. If you're looking to relax and help fall asleep, get this. Or just listen to Eno. Okay. That's it. I don't know if I said everything but that doesn't matter much. Goodbye.

What?!. Ok so I'm not Ross Geller from Friends, though I suspect the writers of the show could have had some fun with this app. While I enjoy a wide range of different types of music and sounds this app is just ridiculous to me. I never tried Bloom nor do I know Eno so I came in blind. 1 star for creativity, 1 star for making it through Apple's approval process. Can't recommend this to non ambience fanatics.

So soothing.... I let it develop for hours and hours, it keeps changing and is as interesting as it is ignorable...

It. Take some time to immerse yourself in this app. There's a great deal of depth and nuance here even with the somewhat familiar themes. certainly well worth the price. If you enjoy ambient, self generating and perpetuating music this is for you. As another reviewer says a great compliment to Bloom. A different environment. Looking forward to more and perhaps some upgrades. Many Thanks to Eno and Chilvers for their introspective genius !!!

Random tones. Please give us an option to remove those tones that pop in randomly. Otherwise the app is awesome.

Great, would give 5 stars if only.... ...there wasn't that damned repeating piano riff in the background. If I wanted that, i'd just play bloom. Please update this app w/o the background lead, it's so undermining of what the user can do. Think Eno!

Brilliant!. Though I've only seen demos of Bloom from online reviews, I suspect Trope is a far more intelligent and sophisticated generative music engine. The result is that it takes your input and reworks it endlessly if not literally, thus offering longevity and thematic variation. With its variety of tone, timbre, and mood, Trope is capable of producing real - truly beautiful - music either on its own or with input from you. Well done!

Great to listen to. This app is great to listen to, but like others have mentioned, lacks the control, or feeling of control that bloom had. I love the sounds. Nice work guys!

Not as good as Bloom. This certainly has its merits - the ability to drag notes out and the graphics are an interesting representation of the sonic outcome. However, I would have preferred to have had more control over the parameters in terms of response and the generative function. It all seems a little too impressionistic, whereas in the case of Bloom the user had greater control of the process. Additionally, I really wish Eno would make some more visually pleasing video graphics as opposed to his current output which resembles a series of badly composed Power Point transitions.

Is the glitchy sound intentional?. I've been using Trope for a few days, and agree with other reviewers about the disappointing lack of user control compared to Bloom, but I do like the ability to "draw" music by dragging out the notes/sounds. However, I have noticed that when playing Trope, my iPhone creates a static-like glitchy noise at the beginning of each note, especially short, single touch operations. While I sometimes like glitches in my electronic music, this aspect of Trope seems out of place, assuming it is deliberate, as it is too "samey". Has anyone else noticed this?

Another touch of elegance from Eno/Chilvers. While many apps are interesting and effective, for me, not too many embody the concept of 'elegance'. This one does.

Better than Bloom. Love it. Thanks!

Not as great as Bloom. Not as interactive as Bloom. Not able to play a melody or single notes :( thought it would be better..It's just missing something. Great ambiant sounds if you just want to listen to it.

Very cool. Definatly need to use headphones or speakers. Another great interactive mood music app.

splendid. Visually intriguing, beautiful - and aurally engaging, spacious Longer tones than Bloom, and results look more - to me - like a moving painting Better than TV

I don't get it.. I'm a big fan of Bloom. I enjoy Air, though it's a bit simple. I just don't get Trope. I confess I don't find the music as interesting. I don't feel as in control of the sounds.

Beautiful sound and vision. While I'm fond of Bloom, and it's more "playable", I spend much more time with Trope as I enjoy the synth tones' greater prominence in the mix. Trope has become my favourite sleep music with its soothing tones and the slow evolution of notes when the random modes are switched on.

Not happy. Why is this listed as a iPad app it clearly is for iPhone feel like I was just ripped off to be honest. Low res graphics and well just not cool to sell this as a ipad app

Sweet App Eno!. Just bought the app Thought bloom was ok Like idea and ability to interact more Ps: Try it on black and white if you will.

I'm no expert in ambient music.... But 3.99 seems high for something this simplistic and unimaginative. There are plenty of great artists making ambient music; I wish I'd just spent the 4 bucks on some of their MP3s.

Enjoyable but crippled experience. This app is enjoyable and serene, but it's usefulness is extremely limited as it lacks background tasking. The developers seemed to have abandoned the app, so you must take it as is. If you'd like to use your iPhone for anything else, you must exit the app and end the soundscape. That being said, the soundscapes are beautiful and a pleasure to listen to while reading or relaxing.

Time to update. The screen looks awful. Please update!

It's bloom 2.0. I really like air too

Excellent. Great ambient music generation. Superb droning. Crank up the bass and enjoy.

Waste of money. AVOID!. After using "Bloom" I was expecting more awesomeness, but this program falls flat on it's face with it's super-limited interface. A waste!

Beautiful sleep aid / zen game.. As stated above.

X. Pure bliss! All for less than a cappuccino!

Fantastic. Darker than Bloom and Air. I'm a goth and I love ambient, and this app is great! That is all.

Not awe inspiring. Bloom is much better.

Not for me. I guess how new age people could get into this but I tried napping to this and it just ended up putting me in a bad mood.

Love it!. Another zen garden for musicians. Very calming. Meditative. Music and art therapy at it's best.

Honestly.... Bloom achieved so much more. Trope is simply a very short loop of dissonant piano notes and older marks. The user hardly has any control at all. Save your cash-stick with Bloom.

Calming. Very nice app

Does Exactly Nothing!. What's worse, it wasn't cheap and does nothing and doesn't even show up in my purchases. There are all these moods you can choose only they've obviously been deactivated. What a sad mess.
