Scape App Description & Overview

What is scape app? Scape makes music that thinks for itself. From Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, creators of Bloom, Scape is a new form of album which offers users deep access to its musical elements. These can be endlessly recombined to behave intelligently: reacting to each other, changing mood together, making new sonic spaces.

Can machines create original music? Scape is our answer to that question: it employs some of the sounds, processes and compositional rules that we have been using for many years and applies them in fresh combinations, to create new music. Scape makes music that thinks for itself.

- Brian Eno, Peter Chilvers

Eno's "Music for Living". Scape is an ambient music lovers wet iDream. It is the perfect Eno record… endless possibilities…ever changing. You can save Scapes, create playlists. I create nightly playlists to sleep to. I haven't found a way to repeat or play a list through out the entire night…. but maybe I just haven't found that out yet… if it is not an option it should be. Amazing app for any fan of Eno or ambient music in general. Hands down the best Eno app to date..great job…well done!

The Future.. Awesome. This is how albums need to be going forward. One complaint: there ought to be an iTunes download of the actual record. I find it very relaxing and would love to load it into my nano.

Audiobus it!. Audiobus please.

Outstanding. First, you must be looking into this because you are into ambient music. You will not be disappointed. I feel Scape has a rare combination of simplicity and depth. The user interface is easy to understand, but that does not also mean one will become bored with this quickly. I bought an iPhone about a year ago. Some of the first apps I purchased were Air, Bloom and Trope. Simplistic and beautiful. I often wondered if there would ever be a next generation. I am thrilled Eno and Opal have gotten back together to create something for the iPad. It is just as easy, but even more beautiful because it is the next level of richness, a more full sounding creation. For those who love the Drone FX app as I do, you will also love this - but not for the same reasons. Sorry that's a bit vague. I mean they both have an important place in my sound scape making. For other people like myself who have crazy lives and need some peaceful way to decompress - this is the perfect app to get.

Thanks, but...no.. It was a great app when it worked on my older iPad 2. With the updates, it's no longer compatible. I really enjoyed the app, too.

Cool app…but. This is a cool app, but like most, there is no way to use what you create. I have several music style apps and all seem to be dead end apps. I was hoping for the option to save as a aiff or wave…or at least an mp3. This would be a great app to use for background music for videos I shoot. I can do the mini jack out, but mini's are not the best option for recording! M

Name your scape. Already a great app for those that enjoy ambient music and/or creativity. The new update allows you to NAME each new scape you create, opening up a whole new level of expression and fun. This feature should have been in the original version, but it's here now. I find the generated sound collages excellent as background music while working. The app is also enjoyable for more focused scape creation.

I'd love a sleep timer or time limit. I love Scape! It is my favorite of the 4 apps. Only thing I'd change: The other generative music apps have a sleep timer- it would be great if Scape had one too. As a musician, I love to improvise with Scape live ( or along with someone 'playing' Scape), and a timer would allow for a finite amount if time for a particular improvisation. Also, as someone who can't listen to music all night, it is awesome to have on for an hour or so before bed, but it would be awesome if it would shut itself off.

Music for Airports comes to the iPad. Incredibly useful and fun way to explore the genre. It continues to play in the background, so it makes for a great ambient jam machine. Been a fan of Eno since way back when and this app doubles as a great stress reliever and creative tool. Highly recommended.

Is it me? Keeps freezing up. I think I downloaded a lemon....freezes up in the introduction mode and it won't let me bypass the introduction mode. Also, yes, this is rather sleepy-time music...so boring!!! I'm sorry but I am not impressed with what I've seen so far which isn't much but app won't let me beyond the intro....

Ambient Bliss. I love this app. Easy to use, beautiful visually and sonically. I use it everyday, and it just gets better and better.

Great app on all levels. This is a gorgeously crafted app that looks as good as it sounds. As an ambient album it's top notch music from the master (and creator) of the genre. You can tap Play and kick back and listen. As an interactive music app it's delightful. One part discovery, one part experimentation, and one part musical instrument. Plus it's just beautiful to look at. It's clear that a lot of attention, time and effort went into making the user interface.

Nice interactive sound scape maker. If you like ambient music, and you like to play with sounds, this app is a good one to add to your collection. Please, Brian Eno, add Airplay so that I can beam the music to my nicer speakers!

Nothing exceptional. I was disappointed with this app as I did expected more from Eno. Yes, it's Eno style cybernetic elements which can be used to construct cybernetic soundscapes, but it sounds like pieces Eno didn't want for any other project and so donated these scraps. It's like his heart wasn't in the project. The artwork is very poor and makes for a ghastly, silly interface. Overpriced and under delivered.

Incredible generative music app. Bloom, Air, Trope: I thought they all were terrific. This, however, changes the landscape entirely. It's dark ambient: think Shutov Assembly or On Land, only this time you set the parameters for the music. Among the very greatest music apps out there, and a worthy entry into Eno and Chilver's discographies.

No edits, no problem!!. While I'm still waiting for the full music creation app this does have a nice effect. Sit back, relax.

Cool with some shortcomings. I've been playing with this for three days. I have to say it is quite original and fun to see how the music comes alive. However, there are some fundamental things missing. 1. Ability to edit your scapes after they have been created 2. Ability to rename the scapes 3. Name a playlist 4. Some way to access more elements. All my scapes were sounding the same after an hour or so. 5. Would be cool to have a WAV or MP3 output 6. Some clue as to the affect of elements based on where they are placed in the scape space 7. Maybe a wave editor to draw a random wave Overall I like the app a lot, I just wish it had some of the more basic editing and naming functions that every app in the world has.

Thrilled. I was so thrilled to learn that the guys had created a great new interactive ambient music/art app when I bought my iPad. I have loved relaxing to Bloom for a couple years now, and though quite different, Scape is every bit as relaxing to use. I have just begun to scratch the surface of enjoyment this app offers, and I look forward to years of chillin' with it.

Ambient Journey. Scape is an immersive audio experience that invites you to create and explore sonic soundscapes. I have owned and enjoyed Bloom and Trope for almost two years, but Scape really pulled me in. After downloading it I thought that I would just test it and then play with it in the morning. Well, four hours later I'm at risk of seeing the sunrise instead of my pillow. I'm looking forward to taking some beats I've created and combining the results. This is a real treat! Enjoy!

Eno, always the genius. Nicely done app, I want to give it 5 stars, but one thing holds me back: exclusion dilemma. The point of ambient is to soundtrack your life, so why can I not run Scape and go on to do other things while it plays?

Near Ambience Perfection. A joy to use, even if the artwork and icons feel a little dated to me (80s throwback?). Rewarding to see more elements become available the more I use it! I appreciate that we are only limited to the sound sources within the app itself. I trust Eno's judgement, as to what works best with ambient music. I'd love to see a few more options in the future: editing previously created scapes, renaming, social sharing between friends, etc, but that does not hinder my current state of enjoying the app!

Nice offering, entertaining relaxing and pretty deep. It is indeed Generative, Downtempo, ambient and quite a trip. It's sort of a celebrity guided tour of Mixtikl with good results guaranteed and a lot of the twiddling of randomness behind-the-scenes… There isn't much to criticize except for the fact that the gain is too high on a couple of the Rhodes and synth type sounds and the jarring can, not always hurt the subtlety of some of the other sounds and the spaces between them... A normalize for them wouldn't be asking too much. Maybe a couple of little living creatures to wander around the scapes and fuse or fight or both. It is worth the price, if the developers continue to provide content or flexibility in importation options like other offerings similarly branded. The ability to use your own sounds is the key to immortality for sound software...

Eno does it again!. Awesome app. The progressively unfolding options encourage interaction with the music. My one gripe is that you can't rename the pieces you create, and are left with the rather ambiguous "Scape 1", "Scape 2", etc. for titles. The ability to edit file names is pretty basic, and really quite necessary if you intend to spend a lot of time with the app. I hope to see this in a future update.

It's Alive!. Popular music is about feeling anticipation and then finally getting what is expected. Ambient music (at least with the droning and floating varieties) releases that idea. Nature sounds can be pleasing because, although their are certain signatures to each sound, it's never the same way twice so your mind gives up "expecting". With Scape you choose the elements and the background and then let it live! It's not about giving you a million options (although Scape has plenty), It's about choosing things and then sitting back and seeing (hearing) what they do. This app also adds new elements as you continue to play with it; I can't believe new elements are popping up even a year after I bought it! Think of this as a living, breathing ambient album (animal)!

Needs more dev TLC. Needs ability to name songs and playlists. Would like ability to tweak chord progression as current one is too eerie. Would recommend if those were fixed, not so much without.

Ambient evolution. An interactive Eno & Chilvers album with endless possibilities, an ambient music lovers dream. I'll be checking out more of Chilvers' works. A beautiful and clean interface. Kudos and thanks for evolving the genre.

A must have with lots of room for improvement.. I have downgraded my previous 5-star rating after having had some with this app. I love the music and the creation parts even more than before. But. The inability to leave the music playing in the background is contrary to everything Ambient music should be and Brian Eno has publicly stood for. Pease let me turn off my iPad and enjoy the music. I don't want to fiddle with this when I could kick back and enjoy. - Big Eno and Ambient fan here. This app is a lot of great things. If you are a fan of Eno or of Ambient, you must get this. Eno has a great track record of collaborative work. Now he collaborates with you. It's a weird a great feeling when you listen to a composition that you feel yours and unique but at the same time pure Brian Eno. The musical side was nailed perfect. The graphics are horrible, though. A refresh would be welcome. And you cannot leave the app or turn off your iPad and leave the track playing. Didn't ambient have to be ignorable, according to Eno himself? Please fix this.

Playback Issues.... Sounds are wonderful and intuitive. Lots of options for different ranges simply based on pads and shapes. Though just created my first scape, and was disappointed that playback was not even close to what I originally recorded. Seems as if the playback (after taking a snapshot) is based on an amalgamation of where I left off as opposed to a defined structure. Am I missing something? Is there an invisible record button (hoping so!). But for this significant issue, this would certainly be a 5 star review.

Ambiently Amazing. Granted, you are going to need to love ambient music for this app to be enjoyable to you. But, if you are, spend your $5 right now. This thing is terrific, and terrific in a way that Eno's previous app projects, Bloom & Trope (and whatever the other one is), just aren't. It amazingly easy to create really lovely "generative music" pieces with this app. I love it. There is a lot of room for development. I'm not sure a full version for iPhone is practical, but an iPhone player of the scapes one creates would be amazing. Also, I'd like to see cloud storage of user files.

Subtle, yet stellar...Internal, yet cosmic. This is simply the most amazing piece of 'generative' music software ever. Great sounds to work with...and the way they evolve is masterful. Join Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers as a composer and create your own ambient masterpiece with them. This is stunningly good...

An absolute GEM!!!!. This app is so well thought out! The beauty is how simple yet deep this thing is. I think it's one of my favorite apps! As you work with it, more sounds for scapeing continue to appear keeping me even more in the creative mode. A beautifully unique interface and beautifully programmed. I just passed #300 scape and am still going. What more can I say?

no app development. that’s the thorn.

Marvelous. Marvelous. If you like ambient music this will keep you entertained. Intuitive interface. The app also supports Airplay so that live music can be sent to networked speakers.

The best one yet. Eno and Chilvers have outdone themselves. This is not only engaging and creative, it provides meaningful soundscaping to your environment. Well done.

DO YOU JUST IGNOR US AFTER WE PURCHASE THIS APP?. OK, let me say that I love this app. I have had Scape for sometime now. I would really like to have reporting capabilities to GarageBand, and other recording apps so I can build songs. Scape can be great as a stand alone, but having the option to add more voices would really bring Scape up to the next level. I appreciate the new soundstage you add, all that is left now is making Scape AUDIO BUS compliant. Why is it not when so many apps are already? Pleas add this feature ASAP! A sure 5 STAR THEN! Thank you. BC AUDIO BUS THIS PLEASE, PLEASE, AUDIO BUS THIS NOW! We need it on the bus! NEBBENNY

Generative Music.... Brian Eno has been on the road to "scape" since his first tape recorder. Cybernetics, throwing tennis balls at broken pianos with Tom Phillips, participating in Cornelius Cardew's "The Great Learning", his efforts using Koan, Frippertronics, multiple CD players, Bloom, Trope, Air, Oblique Strategies, Stafford Beer, etc., seem to have led him here. Here are the loosely composed elements required to create endless "places" he wants to take you to. All roads lead to "scape"...

Almost a Perfect App. This is an enthralling app that has engaged my creativity. Usually, an app will fall by the wayside or even be deleted. Only a very few apps continue to hold my attention. Scape has grabbed hold like no other app has. The wish list for most apps is huge since they need lots of help improving their concepts or fixing bugs. Scape only has a few: 1. Naming playlists. 2. Editing existing playlists by adding and rearranging scapes. 3. Combining moods. 4. Make Scapes extensible so I can make it my own with new moods, backgrounds, and elements that use my own sounds and rules. Well done Brian and Peter! Well done indeed.

Soundscape times. I purchased this based on my good times with Bloom. Great follow-up? Spent hours just building and tweaking. It relaxes me. I'd ask for a few more sounds along the minimalistic lines but that's it. Perhaps some ambient space themes. But what do I know. The interface is simplistic which forces me not to complicate but rather immerse and enjoy?

Interactive ambient sculpture. Most Excellent! as an interactive work as well as an ambient release by eno/ chilvers

Fantastic new approach to music. This is a sweet app. You find a sound which is pleasing to you, and you can listen to it while it evolves. Love it. Couple ways it could be better, like making your scapes shareable on Facebook and allowing us to specify how long we want it to play. Maybe a sleep timer too. Also making it available on iphone. But I have to say this is one of the best apps I have found this year.

Don't be fooled by its simplicity...this is deep!. I once spent more than a year in my spare time trying to track down a tune I heard on TV and just couldn't get out if my head. I eventually found it on ITunes to be one of Brian Eno's called Deep Blue Day. Ever since then I have been a big fan of his work. Brian is one of the worlds best composers of atmospheric, ethereal, unforgettable music. This app does not disappoint. It has Brian Eno written all over it. The cool thing is that you can compose music using complex constructs built in by the master himself, and instantly make music that could be straight off of one of his albums. I have read reviews suggesting lack of complexity - what!!!? Play with it a few more hours, listen to what you can make and think again. This apps changes as you creates new tracks so plenty of variability. Don't just play for 5 minutes and trash it. Experiment for a while and you will see that it is well worth the money. Brilliant!

Love it. I listen to ambient music a lot. This app allows me to never get bored. It doesn't seem like loops - very nuanced and textural. One piece, which lasts about 5 minutes, changes from beginning to end Would like the ability loop a piece, or better still, have it play to a specified length.

Great job! The only thing I wish it had..... ...is an iPhone version. This app is a great way for audience and musicians to interact. If an iPhone version ever became available, that would make the interaction truly portable.

Brilliant!. Scape delights in so many ways, especially so if you've tried your hand at generative composition or ambient music, which is deceptively simple sounding but difficult to do well. Scape does it well and is full of subtle things and small revelations. The control and visual representation are masterful and add dimension. A real sonic playground, magic! It really needs: allow naming scapes and indicating what has been saved or modified. Expose a bit more about the rules of generation at play. Specify duration of scape. App Sharing. A nice external display rather than mirroring the controls.

My new addiction. I love this app and use it daily. It really is my newest addiction. I would love to be able to set the running time of a scape, and to name them individually. All this and an Eno ambient album too for the price!

A little stale.... Same bank of cheesy new age sounds that have been around since late 80s... and graphics to match. If that's what you're looking for, then you'll love this. Almost no control over the evolution of the 'scape' and documentation is completely absent. Overall, the music and visuals seem to be stuck in another decade.. kinda like that person you know who looked in the mirror 25 years ago and said, "ahh...there's my look" and never moved on. I know this is a little harsh. Obviously a ton of work and thought went into it. But, if I were an artist on the receiving end of such a review, I'd find it helpful.

Love it but it needs more. Ditto to what others have requested and I would like a regenerative aspect added as several minutes for a scape is too short. Is not really compatible with background play as it frequently loses the unsaved scape when a work is in progress. I like the "potential" of the app.

Endless possibilities in a limited scape. Beautiful, and I love the way it unfolds more and more options the more you use it. But I wish the visuals were as appealing as the sounds, and I really want to be able to name my scapes.

Needs audiobus. This app is great but needs audiobus to be complete.

Outstanding!. With plenty to play with, this ambient music app has lots of flexibility. New elements are introduced as one gets used to working with the program, keeping overwhelm at a minimum, fascination at a maximum. In some ways, the best to come out of the Eno-Chilvers partnership to date. We'll done!

If you only buy one ambient album this year.... ...make it this app. It makes beautiful, haunting, intricate ambient music. It's so far impossible to make it sound awful. Sure, it would be nice to know exactly what the hell is actually going on, but the lack of detail kind of adds to the intrigue. I'm content to learn through experimentation if it all sounds like this!

Love it. Simple, pure, austere, reflective. I love interacting with this app. The generative process is awesome for creative play. 5 stars when I can name my own compositions.

Engrossing and enigmatic.. I have been using this fantastic app for several days - either as 'background' music or by actively engaging with it. I feel like I am deciphering an alien script and when new components unlock, they both add to my pleasure and deepen the mystery. Not about instant gratification, but about investment and exploration, which the app rewards. I'm hooked!

A must-have for any music lover. I've always been a fan of Brian Eno's ambient series, and this ingenious little app allows you to create your own music in a similar vein. The instructions are vague, and the results are a little confusing, but I can't help but think that's exactly the way it should be. The fact that it has 15 built-in 'scapes' means, in effect, that the purchase price includes a free new Eno release. I could play with this for years, and probably will.

Bit of a "black box".... ...but nice enough generative sounds. As other reviewers have mentioned, it might be nice to know what's going on behind the scenes but perhaps that would destroy the mystery! Sounds like source material from Eno's many installation works, combined with 88 Million Paintings and Bloom. Definitely blurs the line between album, app and installation art... P.S. I had to uninstall and then reinstall this app when I upgraded to iOS7. Since then, I have lost all my Scapes and all the additional "instrument" features - it would be nice to have the option of reinstating them rather than having to start all over again

Still as good as ever.. If you like ambient music then this remains the app of choice. While not easily understood it is nonetheless easy to use and creating an album of soothing sounds is as simple as placing images on a background you have chosen from a palette to suit your mood. Allowing infinite tweaking, this app enables you to match and then modify your frame of mind. Enjoy!

excellent can play it for days!. make random choices and let it evolve. Big Eno fan and this is like buying a thousand new Eno ambient releases!

Ambient, generative, musical, creative, meditative. Anyone who likes Eno's ambient music (or his collaborators like Budd or Hassell) should get this app. As other reviewers have pointed out, the inbuilt "presets" mean you basically get an Eno album for free. The app works by allowing you to add visual objects and backgrounds to the screen which correspond to audio elements (drones, synth pads, drums, brief note sequences). The elements interact and change over time. You can then string these together as a "playlist" to create the equivalent of an ambient album where individual ambient tracks fade n and out of each other. I use this app all the time. As in every day. In a noisy workplace like mine, it's brilliant to push out unwanted background noise and replace it with an ambient that I find very beneficial for concentration and studying. If, like so many of us, you're stuck in an environment where you can't control the background hubbub (which for me os a constant low level irritation) then this is worth a try. I plan to use it next time I'm on a long plane trip.

Needs more explanation. How to edit a scape? Where are support options? Who can I ask for help? This seems like a very interesting app, but needs mor explanation.

Remarkable. A brilliant app. A must for anyone interested in ambient sounds, whether you choose to interact or simply listen to the scapes included.

So incredibly cool and smart. Wow, this is really cool. My hat goes off to Eno for this, really awesome!

Eno is and remains the God of Music. If you like ambient music, you need this.

An endless ambient delight. Peter Chilvers is not just Brian Eno's IT tech. His musical instincts have taken Brian Eno's sounds and concepts to a new, unique place. It's a shame the non-iDevice world doesn't get a taste of how interesting these various apps (and Scape in particular) are. If this style of music is to your taste, Scape is a quantum leap forward. Endlessly intriguing.

Don't bother unless you're Eno blind fan. Worst $6 I've ever spent. There are way cheaper and way better apps to create ambient sounds. Unless you are Eno's fan and MUST hear everything he creates...

Another amazing app from Eno. Wonderful app. Very simple and intuitive to use. The resulting soundscapes are fascinating. I like how the app introduces new elements over time so that you are not overwhelmed by choice at the beginning. We are very lucky Brian Eno has taken such an interest in developing these little applications and sharing them with us. Highly recommended.

Crashes. App crashes on start.

Scape is a wonderful step forward. Scape represents one of the next steps forward in music production, where the album generates itself and you control some of the variables. Users will be able to create immersive soundscapes that vary wildly and learn the playful self generating rules that the musical elements have.

Instant Ambient Bliss. Great to fall asleep to 😉

I fascinated and frustrated. I want to give 5 stars but can't get it to work! Even shut down, restart and reload app Every time I try to load the ""element" onto the scape in the intro it will not add into the scape. Can't get to step two. On iPad 2. Is this only for newer versions of iPad? Update Finally, deleted again then reloaded and can play with it endlessly. Will give the fifth star when I can send it, otherwise it's really not mine, is it?

Very nice. Great composition tool with lots of depth. Looking forward to expansions.
