Uses GPS?. Works well for an iPhone 3G. The author doesn't go into much detail on what data s/he is using to calculate the shadow, but it's probably a combination of date, time, and GPS coordinates. I was under the impression that an app needs to ask your permission before using your "current location." So either this app doesn't need your latitude and longitude, or it's getting your location without permission. Something to think about. I'd like to see a GPS-based compass that can orient based on direction traveled: pick a point in the distance, start the compass tracking you with GPS, walk toward the point, then when you've walked far enough for the app to tell your direction of travel, you can hold the iPhone in front of you facing toward that point, and the app would point an arrow toward true north relative to the direction you've been traveling. Still not as easy as an iPhone 3G-S, but at least those of us with an old phone would have something that would work on a cloudy day or at night! Maybe in the next update....

Works fine. People writing negative reviews just do not understand how this compass works. Therefore, they think it does not work. It does. It is a sun compass, not a magnetic compass. The shadow on the compass rotates around according to the time of day, as the sun moves across the sky. So why you put your finger in the middle of the compass perpendicular to the screen, your finger casts a shadow. Align your finger's shadow with the shadow on the compass. Now north will be pointing north, etc. It is not super precise and is not supposed to be. But it is plenty good enough for casual use. A couple minor complaints: I wish the name of the app on the iphone would just say "Compass" rather than "Compa...Free". I don't know how to change the icon name of the app so it isn't truncated with the dots in it. This app would get better reviews if Masayuki did a better job explaining clearly how the app works.

Very nice solution, old school and educational. Works exactly as advertised. You line up the shadow to find north (hint the shadow marker moves with time). All the complaints that it doesn't do what they wanted it to do are misguided and unfounded. Yes it is old school. Yes it requires some sunlight. Yes it works better morning or evening. That us what it is designed to do. A sundial, as some misguided people have called it, gives you the time not the direction. Because the app is computing the expected shadow fall when north is aligned this gives you a direction based on the time. Go download one of the hundred other gps based ones (or buy a 3gs) if that is what you want. For me this app goes on the phone.

Not very good. Didn't really work and was too much of a hassle.

Good basic compass - Better IQ test. Rate this app honestly, then multiply the number of stars you chose by 30 to get a very rough estimate of your IQ. For all those who claim it's frozen or doesn't work, slow down and read the instructions. Still having trouble, try a musical instrument because science isn't your bag. To all those 1 star reviewers, your best bet is just to ask someone for directions and stay in well populated areas. If you can't figure out this basic sun based approximation tool, or slow down enough to read, you have no business using a magnetic compass either - buy a GPS with a motherly voice that says "you are here." Apologies to the author for the preponderance of ignorance in these reviews. You have written a clever and elegant app., given it away for free and this legion of fools protest the fairness of this transaction. "It doesn't even work at night!" Neither do solar panels or Baywatch, does that mean both of those are useless? Note: You should implement correct DLST if it is indeed off.

It works wonderfully.... ...and for free! If you read the directions (look at the images given) it works fine. There is no such thing as a compass you just hold up and it rotates to north on apps. If you really want that, please save yourself some frustration and go buy yourself an actual compass. Maybe your grandpa or dad or other resident boyscout even has an old one he would give to you! That's free too!

Great. This comes in handy on hiking trips. Im a boyscout and i use this when me and the boys go hiking or camping and i forget my compas . Its beter than doing it with sticks wich is the same method called the sundail method were you need to know time if u dont have a clock it gets way harder. Big releaf. But only works at day so at night its back to finding the north starwith sticks fo me. Can u make a night vertion. Great app!

It works and is free. I don’t understand why some reviewers are saying it doesn’t work. I note that when launching Compass Free, it doesn’t ask permission to find your location. So, perhaps it simply looks towards the time zone and country one is in. I’m in the U.S. and all I can say is I took it out yesterday to a road that I know is oriented exactly east–west and where I know for sure where I can find Polaris at night. About an hour short of noon, I tried it. I oriented it horizontally (important), put my finger in the middle, twisted the iPhone until my finger’s shadow pointed the marked direction, and the iPhone was pointing very close to north. It does what it says and it’s free. At least for North American users who can follow directions, I don’t see a problem here. Five stars.

Works just fine. I could think this app through enough to use sucessfully after dawn without any sunlight. No, this is not a real compass, it is an app that calculates north using time and sun position. It does not detect Earth's magnetic fields like a real compass. It takes a little more effort and thinking on your part, but still childishly simple to use and quite accurate for an iPhone app if you're bright enough to follow directions. Also, this app is best used during morning and afternoon when the sun isn't overhead and can actually project the shadow of your finger. It also will not work on a cloudy day or in the shade.

I think it's great, honestly.. Now many people who gave bad reviews have one of two problems with it. 1. They can't read the directions by knowing that you put your finger in the center and turn the line under the compass into a shadow to point North. 2. They might not be able to use it at night because they can't use the moon's light that points out the suns location. If you're smart enough to surpass those, you,re good.

Not bad, but not great. This app is a good tool to help you find true north, and it does work well. I gave it only two stars because it really is trivially simple to calculate ephemerides given the time, date, and location (lat/long). I did this in high school. The app could have provided a LOT more useful and interesting stuff, but didn't. Given how trivially simple the app is, one would think the developer would have spent more time on a slick and engaging interface---clearly he did not. What makes this app utterly redundant is the fact that there's another free app that does the same thing, plus a lot more: Planets. The main screen of that app gives you a compass with the current positions of the sun and moon superimposed. Looking for true north? Just rotate your phone until the sun icon and the actual sun are approximatley line up. Same concept as this compass app (undoubtedly the same ephemeride calculations!), but you get even more context info. And as a bonus, it works at NIGHT. Since it shows the moon, you can still figure out true north in the middle of the night. Pass on this app, and download Planets. And, no, I'm not the developer of Planets, and I'm not getting compensated for the plug. It's a FREE APP, morons! Say it with me: F R E E, FREE!

Slavi Glavchev. Doesn't work

It is not a compass . . .. It is an experimental intelligence measurement system. If the 1 stars vs the 4-5 stars are indeed an measurement of those who simply cannot comprehend instructions, or choose not to, it is a sad commentary on the decline of our societies critical thinking skills. It would be interesting to know if the author is indeed in some psychological expermental field and/or a student of same. The app is great though; I actually used it for real once and the measurement was accurate enough for me to get where I had intended.

Absolutely useless. Shame on you people.. Failures, all of you.

It's a reverse sundial. Several reviewers seem to be having problems with this app. Most apparently never read the Help screen. And the name doesn't help! It's actually a reverse sundial. If you know the date and time (and your iPhone/Touch does) and you are in the northern hemisphere (which may not be the case) then you know in which direction the sun should be. From that, you can guess north using a shadow. Clever app, IMHO, but misnamed and not explained in enough depth.

Don't listen to the 1 stars. These guys are computer geeks with no life, and don't know how to use a SUN compass...not a magnetic compass. This app works great. Love it. It's free. Worth every imaginary cent! Everybody should get this right now. Only thing would be to upgrade the graphics just a little bit. But that's just me. Overall ***** (5 stars). Love it. Get it now. Why are you still reading this? Download now!!!

Not worth it.. Not worth it.

Don't get lost in the woods with this app. Billyk94 must know the person who created the app or may be the person who created the app otherwise why would he defended it with such passion? Well I think what people are trying to say is that the app is misleading. The 3Gs has a compass that is really quite good. People like myself may have seen that app on the new iPhone and thought this was somewhat like it. So when you are trying to find your way in the middle of a big city with clouds covering the sun or a moonless sky this app would leave you stranded. So basically this app blows. Unless you are a complete dork who has two or three days plus a degree in astromy to figure this piece of crap out becase the rest of us must just be slow So I guess what I am trying to say is I am really glad this hunk of moose droppings was free. Thank you I will be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitresses and bar tenders. Good night all

Excellent application. For those of you that rated this app poorly or do not understand how it works, thank you for giving me the insight as to how ignorant and uneducated the general public really is! I find it scary that our society is inhabited by such morons. If the schools keep handing out undeserved diploma's to people with your lack of understanding for such a simple but useful concept I fear for the future of our world. I doubt many of you wear or even know how to read an analog wrsitwatch these days much less be able to figure out true north by using that analog watch to find true north.. this app makes that task very easy and it could save a life one day. But maybe you are too ignorant to realize that! To the creators of this app. it is very well done!!

How stupid can you people be?. It's impossible to have a 3GS-like compass app without a magnetic compass in the hardware. A sundial compass is the best you can get with the hardware on the 3G. If you follow the instructions, this app works perfectly to tell you you which direction is north. If you can't make it work, you have some serious mental deficiencies. Try not to give negative reviews because of your own stupidity in the future.

Doesnt work. Doesnt work

Sundials. I think it’s great if you read the description. It can double as a sundial. Great tool for teaching kids how the earth works, doesn’t work so great on teaching adults to read. Disclaimer: doesn’t work very well on cloudy days... I can’t figure out why? Really... all you haters!

Compass. This app works well and is reasonably accurate. Previous review concerning lack of sufficient sun light to use it is idiotic. What planet do you live on? I had no trouble using it on a cloudy day. Just put your finger over a surface and line the compass guide up with the angle of the shadow under your finger. Daylight savings time is not going to have enough impact on the direction to make much difference.

Works away from connection. This is a fantastic app! Marvelous! Wonderful! You don't even need to be connected to any network to use it. It will even work in airplane mode. The reviewers that said it doesn't work don't get it. Maybe they'll get lost and never be able to write ignorant reviews again. My favorite ignoranous wrote "it's just a picture!" The app works by calculating where the sun's shadow would fall if you had it oriented correctly at that time of day...you just work back to correct orientation by aligning the correct shadow to the real shadow of your finger! Old concept updated for simplicity. It works amazingly well! If you don't get it, just chalk it up to your own stupidity or lack if any orientation knowledge. Your choice. You know, maybe charging .99 would keep the morons away! I appreciate your work on this app. THANK YOU to the developer for writing and giving away this great app!

Does not... Does not tell you which way you are facing. It’s a compass to tell you where the sun sets so you know which direction to put your prayer rug. SMH!!

Not a compass. For this "compass" you have to hold your iphone or ipodtouch under the sunlight. That's really dumb. Pretend you and your friend ate lost in the deep, deep woods and it's raining really hard. You take out your ipodtouch and go to your compass app. It doesn't work because it's cloudy outside. Ya, this is one great app. N-O-T!!!!!! And so you and your friend are lost in the woods. And, really, would it be so hard to make a simple app that tells you which direction your going???? If the Chinese could make their own compass hundreds of years ago with just the materials they could find and only their bare hands, we could make a compass in five seconds with no thought at all!!! Are we that lost?????

Cool!. The negative reviews for this app emphasize that lots of people are uncomfortable with science. The only thing this FREE app could use is one sentence instructions telling you to 'put your finger in the middle of the compass and line it's shadow up with the app's shading'. Thanks for the fun app that will amaze children and science refugees, and provide a reminder of our place in the solar system.

SAVED MY LIFE. I was at a boat, until a wave came and rocked the boat, cracked it, and made it in the middle of ****ing no-where. I pulled out the app, changed the time zone to what the guy with the nice GPS said, and it worked. We kept going west, then north, and we made it back. Oh, and for airheads who don't know how it works, it's by sunlight and the time, why I changed the timezone. You must put it on a table, make the time right, and have the shadow of your finger overlapping the shadow on the screen. There. The north is true, the south is true, the east is true and the west is true. Happy? HUH? AIRHEAD!? YA GOT IT?!

App is crap. This app is not worth downloading. But it's not like you're going to find anything better than this app if you have an iPhone before the 3G S and you are looking for a compass app, this is all you're going to get. This app seriously needs work and the fake reviews giving it 5* is kinda sad on the developers part. But this app doesn't work if the sun isn't out, you're inside or if there is any sort of light sorce closer to you than the sun (which is all light on earth for those of you who don't know how close the sun is). And it is extremely inaccurate. And if you need to find your way out of the woods you won't be able to cause there are trees blocking the sun. So don't waste your time by downloading this app.

It’s terrible. I loaded it and all I can get is the logo. NOTHING works!

I'd rather get lost in the middle of nowhere. Honestly, I'd rather get lost in the middle of Montana than rely on this compass to guide me anywhere. Whoever made this app should consider letting a blind person revamp this app, maybe it'll actually be effective. I read the directions and everything, it's just the most complicated compass you could possibly create. If you're lost and you have an iPhone, forget this app and just refer to your maps app to get you where you need to go!

So easy to use!. Not sure why folks rate it so poorly - it's the simplest way to get a sense of direction without carrying an actual compass with you. You do need to be able to get a shadow from the sun, so consider that. Just put your index finger pointing straight down to the center of the compass in the sun and rotate the compass until your finger matches up with the white 'shadow' and there you have it! So simple.

Doesn't work. Doesn't work.

Compass. I liked what AlieninMN wrote, very funny!

The only "compass" for iTouch users. The iPod Touch does -not- currently have a magnetic compass in it, so an app like this is the only way to find north if you use an iPod Touch. It's a simple (albeit, slightly clever) app that figures out where the sun should be depending on time of day and then uses the shadow cast by your finger to find north. Obviously, it can't be used at night or on an overcast day. There is a setting to allow for southern hemisphere, too. So if you're an iPhone user, get a real compass app that takes advantage of the built-in magnetomoeter. For iPod Touch users, this app works. There is an iAd banner which, in my opinion, is a bit questionable given such a basic app.

Gah. It works fine. Like others before me have said, a downside is that it's unusa me at night, and though I suppose if you used the motion sensetivity of the iphone a compass could be made, it wouldn't work well. And to whoever said it freezes: no, it doesn't, I uses the time of day to decide where to put the white line and aside from that, it's just an image. That's why it's free. In daylight, it works fine.

It sucked. It doesn’t even do anything it is useless of all sorts

Works great!/how it works. It's so cool how u can tell witch way your facing and for people that think it doesn't work this is how it works go out side and put it on something flat then put your finger in the center of the compass make sure no ether shadows are on the compass then turn your iPod/iPhone until your shadow is on the white light then take your finger off and now the N E W S is facing the right way

Very Simple but effective when explained. So many negative reviews, ouch... Here’s my take: this is free, and it works. The gray “shadow” moves around the dial VERY slowly throughout the day, so don’t expect this app to ‘do’ something active, it doesn’t. As explained, orient your finger’s sun shadow over the gray shadow on the screen, and you will see roughly accurate cardinal headings (N,S,E,W) but not exact degrees. In a pinch, this will get you un-lost if needed. Works great on my iWatch gen 4 too. No need for cell or WiFi connection. Thanks, app maker!!

Misunderstood. Ahem. This app works perfectly well. The average joe just doesn't understand how to use it. It cannot automatically point north. You have to be in sunlight where a shadow can be cast. You match the compass to the shadow, and it gives you direction. And the gps unit in the 3g iPhone won't give you which direction you are facing. Don't load this app if you don't understand the most simple science of where the sun rises and sets.

You guys are idiots. I've spent several days looking through the reviews for this app and several others, and I have one thing to say... YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS. There is no way on this planet to put a compass on a device like the iPod touch through downloading it from a program. It is just not possible. The only way to do it is to literally install a real working compass inside of the device. iPods and iPhones were not built with a compass, so you idiots complaining for a real magnetic compass, forget it, it will never happen. You can't take gps to get compass directions without moving. Gps finds your location, and takes your location from two spots to find your heading. This app is designed to take the sun (that big ball of light in the sky) and give you a direction based on time of day and the sun's position. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The directions for this app say to put your finger in the middle of the picture, and then use manual labor (god forbid) to rotate the iPod until the shadow lines up with the line in the image. IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING ELSE!!! For more information, google search "hardware vs software" and read some of the results

Awful. I have smart devices so little or NO effort is involved in the use of them. To busy to stand in sun to set this up. Live in Minnesota rarely have sun

Simplicity itself. I'm not sure I believe that there are THAT many ignorants out there in iPhone-land, who can't figure out how to use this clever little gem, or that it's just another indication of where we currently are as the great dumbing down continues toward the final "Mission Accomplished." Common boys (& maybe a few girls too), it ain't that hard to figure out. Hey, I'd like a old-style (traditional) compass that automatically points north too But Free Compass is a pretty nice substitute - at least a good bit of the time - 'till the real thing comes along.

Very useful!. Don't expect a moving compass... this is way cooler. I got lost in London and used this to get us back to the train station. I don't use my finger, it's too difficult. I just line the shadow line up with my body's shadow, or anything else. Maybe it's not 100% accurate, but it certainly does the job. It has helped me many times in travelling. Thanks for a great free app!

If this was clear?. when do you include directions? This is horrid stuff. I am unable to use this,

Seriously?. Most people have no common sense. Which is why I'm not surprised this app has such a low rating. Garentee people will misunderstand this review to... To all who can't read directions go out and by yourselves shovels because your to dumb to do anything but dig ditches for a living. (oppologies to any smart construction/landscapers). Great app if your in the northern hemisphere. Five stars.

Trash. Trash

Does NOT also make toast!. This is a simple sundial compass. I read several reviews before installing, and it seems people expect this app to not only point the direction they are going, but also book a hotel and rental car when they get there. The cardinal directions on the face are NOT supposed to change, as this is a sundial, only the shadow on the screen moves based on the time of day. The directions for use are clearly stated in the provided info. This is a basic survival tool, and its function is obviously lost on the majority of app users. I am very impressed by the clever simplicity and usefulness of this app!

It does as advertised.. Reading these reviews is like watching cavemen trying to figure out how to light a fire. Unless you have the iPhone 3gs, you're not going to have a magnetic compass. In order to use this compass, you must align your shadow with the shadow on the screen, which changes position according to the time. Once you have done this, the compass points in the correct direction.

Junk. Got it and junk don't waste your time it should be taken down

Great. thanks for the info ! will be usefull when 3G or Wifi is unavaliable and being lost

Useless. This app only works if you have direct sunlight, otherwise totally useless.

Hopeless. Hopeless you might as well hold up a stick

UnAmor. This is a sundial. No, I would caution people to use this as something accurate and then bring it to the bush let alone be even more daring a walkabout to the Simpson Dessert, chances of you coming out alive is highly unlikely. Dont bother - waste of space on my iphone. No wonder its free. This one gets negative 1 star for trying. Almost similar to that free Mirror App where the reflection of your screen is a mirror with the apt frame around it.

Can't believe it!!. This app is very simple and basic, I recomend this for IPOD TOUCH users who don't have access to Wifi.

Rubbish. Doesn't work. Don't bother!

Not happy with the feature. Not recommended at all

This is a SUNDIAL, not a compass. This should be called "Sundial" - that's what it is. Doesn't spin to the north or anything - it needs SUNLIGHT to work.

Worst application. It never worked for me. Frustrated.

Not listening to your customers. It is pure arrogance to assume that everyone lives north of the equator. You've had several months to react to your customers but you have chosen to ignore us, this would be a mistake as I notice you produce other products. I for one do not forget poor service.

DOES WORK FOR SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE (Follow These Instructions). This application can work in the southern hemisphere. HOWEVER, you need to view it differently: Pretend that the line from WEST to EAST is a mirror; and the screen shadow represents the sunlight reflecting of our mirror. Use the law of reflection to place the incoming sunlight, at the opposite angle to the screen shadow. [Eg. if the screen shadow is at NORTH EAST, the incoming sunlight should be coming from NORTH WEST]. Therefore N represents North. DID THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE?

yeah it works!. OK in case you haven't worked it out, what you are supposed to do is put your finger vertically on the compass reticule, and then line the shadow of your finger onto the white line that appears on the compass. Once you have the shadow and the white line aligned the compass will be properly aligned to north. It seems that this app uses GPS and the time to work out where the white line should be, as it works in the southern hemisphere as well as ( I assume) the north. Thanks for this free app!

Don't waste your time on this. While it appears to recognize time change, this app would get you lost seriously quickly. It has no idea where north is!

What????. This is just a wired app.... All I want is a Compass!!!!

What about us?. This would be a great app if you lived in the northen hemesphere during the day.... But for us in the south, and in the dark, it's useless. I'd like to see an update for sthn hem users....

Really bad. Worst app I ever had

cooolll... very cool app :) I likey

Use a watch instead. Southern Hem: Using an analog watch, point the 12 at the sun. The point in between 12 and the hour hand is North. Oh daylight saving; then point the 1 at the sun. Simple. Apologies if this has already been posted. Regards

interesting. but not particularly useful. Maybe good for teaching kids about the Sun.

Bad. Not working at all!!!!

Move on it doesn't work. Total waste of time

Awesome. I love it

Not happy Jan. this application is impossible in my view to use, in the sun or out of the sun.

NOT for Southern Hemisphere!. Didn't think to look after those south of the equator did you??

This is just a static picture. unless I am missing something, this is a static picture of N-S-E-W, or as one reviewer noted, a "sundial." What is the point? One could draw such a picture with a pencil or just remember that the sun sets in the west. I was expecting a compass and so I am disappointed.

Wierd. But it works! Taught my kids about sun movement.

WHAT ABOUT THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. Would be great if it worked in Australia and other countries in the southern hemisphere, mabey use the location features of the iPhone and iPod touch to accuratly point to north. If you live in the southern hemisphere DO NOT get this app.

Waste. Shame on you for calling it a compass!

Doesn’t work. No instructions on how to use and does not get past screen showing points of the compass real dud

It does work. As per the write up on the App Store, this app displays a picture of a compass and relies on you using a finger to cast a shadow which indicates North. So it does work. However, the dimensions of a finger and the iWatch give such an inaccurate indication that it would be quicker to look up and see where the sun was. It works in another way too. Although the GPS is irrelevant, it captures your location "always". Who it is working for - is not you.

Free compass. It would not work for me I am in Sydney

Woot!. I walked through the whole charles darwin park with the compass free app. It works perfectly fine.

Rubbish. This app is a waste of time, just a static picture - disappointing

Not so flash. It might help if you’re lost in the bush outside one of Japan's major cities, in that case pray don’t play with your phone, but other than that I would NOT recommend this one.

Great idea. Great idea, simple yet effective. Helps when being in a different town just to get bearings. I'd pay for it if I could enter location and time zone.

Pretty Funny. Masayuki must be having a giggle over this! Sublime though as useful as Origami fire truck in a bush fire.

Great!. Works perfectly on 3rd gen iPod touch. I think that's what it is designed for because no other compass app works. Why is everyone hating on it!

Not for aus. Doesn't work southern hemisphere...

Poo. Doesn't even work. You have to be in sunlight.

Inaccurate. I used this and it is inaccurate

No Good South of Equator. This compas is ment for the Northern Hemisphere. Only time it works in Au is early in morning and late in evening.

No good. Doesn't work on apple watch.

Compass Free Version 1.0. No good for Australia! and I was so excited to have a compass. Please someone develop one that is configurable to current location. Don't get it (even though it's free) if you are in Southern Hemisphere - waste of time!

Press the. Excellent - Location Services need to be on. Press the 'info' on the app. it explains everything. It works in the Northern & Southern hemispheres. Very simple & usable compass (as long as the sun is shining)!!

Ya Kidding!!. Very useful tool !! LOL!! don't waste your time touch users

Dosn't do anything. Ive downloaded this over a month ago. I still have it but... it dosn't seem to do anything so my guessing is it dosn't work in australia or at least not for queensland.

Awesome. this app is so cool i have an ipod touch so obviously i dont have a gps of compass or fancy things like that so i just put my find on it and turned it to match the shadow at it worked!!!

Won't work in Oz. Cute concept, but it certainly doesn't work here in the southern tropics and I would hazard a guess that it won't work in the northern tropics in winter either - when the sun is south of the observer. Should be fixable with location services or a manual latitude - preferably the latter as there are better ways to determine north if you are in range of services.

Time Waster. I live in OZ and I have spent so much time on this getting it to work. unsuccessful so I have deleted it. Waste of time.

Compass Free. A nice, simple program, showing the compass face as a sundial. Works well if it is daytime, the sun is visible and you are in the northern hemisphere. Of no use if it is after sunset or below the Equator as it then shows North to be South (we are in Oz). Domo arigato Akamatsu San.

Wow. What about at night ...?

Terrible. Do not buy this app! It is the worst app on the app store.

Great free application, make sure you read the instructions. I like this application. It works well if you read and understand the instructions. Best of all, it's free!

Inutile. Ne fonctionne pas bien. N'est pas dynamique.

Dumb. You can't use it at night. It needs the shadow of your finger. It should move around like a REAL compas.

Doesn't work. Try as I might, I could not get this app to work. It didn't cause any systemic issues but otherwise it failed to deliver.

THIS APP IS A SUNDIAL!!!. Works good simple yet effective.

FAIL. it was working great for me... until the sun set and then I got lost.

Terrible Application!!. Don't get this application! I downloaded it onto my iPod touch and as it was installing the software my device completely froze. There was no way to restart it or restore it back to it's original settings. I had to take it to the technician but I still have problems now because of it so I think I may have to send it to apple. Apparantly I'm not the only one who's had this unfortunate issue. I DO NOT reccomend this app.

Awesome app. With this, I can easily go for walks out in the bush, and so long as the sun is out I can find my way home. Shame on the previous reviewer that didn't read the instructions.

free, but they should pay us.. Totally useless!

Not even for free !. This app should be simply removed from the store. Who wants to use a compass app on an Ipod when all there is to do is use the shadow of your finger. Silly ! I always looked at an Ipod as a sophisticated gadget .... please !

A compass that perptually points in the same direction.. I apologize for the (useless) reviews. The "info" icon has finally responded on my Touch. And, this application can indeed be quite useful.

I know it's free but.... I can't recommend it - there is no use for it. If you are lost in the wilderness you will need sunlight to find north with this device... Or you could just use a stick, or your arms... Look it up it's easy

I have tried and I have tried.... It should not be this hard to get an app to work. I follow the directions to set it up and it kept freezing. Concept is great though!

It works but is so simple there's no need for it. It's good if you don't know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west; otherwise, it's not worth your time.

System Crashes when you Download. My iphone crashed after I downloaded this app.. Some things still not working right....Lastly its doesn't work right. It has no idea where north is.

Useless. This app is useless. It didn't change directions no matter which way I faced and with my finger on the compass. Not worth downloading even though it's free.

It's ok I guess. You would normally use this in summer

Not good. This is no use

Useless. This compas has a static pointer...doesn't work

This app. is horrible. This app. Destroyed my iPod. It is horrible. I compared it to a real compass and it's so off track.

Don't get it ever. I got it and it made my iPod freeze up.and doesint even work

Silly app. Any person who does not know where the rises and sets has no business operating a sophisticated phone.

C R A P. Does not work

Causes iPhone to reboot and then no apps will work. This app is broken and should be removed from the App Store. Twice now it has caused my iPhone to reboot and then no apps will work. To fix you have to restore your iPhone with iTunes which is a hell of a lot of wasted time. If there is any malicious action taken by this application as some other have stated there should be compensation to customers who've downloaded. I thought the App Store had steps in place to prevent this. I am not impressed.

Great simple ap. Works great as advertised

Helped solve argument with wife. We were in our backyard of our new house arguing over where west was. I downloaded this app, put my finger in the sunlight, and bingo proved where west was!

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY !!!!. I really dont understand why Apple inc. accept this product. Dont download this. Trust me !

Beautiful and elegant. The negative reviews were probably for an old version. This app is simple and has a nice zen like simplicity and aesthetic.

Bad. It's ok

Non. Poche

I guess South West is really North?!?!. I used this application (after reading AND fully understanding) and when I turned the ipod so my finger's shadow overlapped the arrow, it had the "north" direction pointing almost completely opposite of North. Is it supposed to recognize your global position? (kind of important if it intends to direct you with the shadow of your finger)

ok. ok intil sun sets after that fail

do not install. Don't even bother to install this app as it won't open

Don't download!!. Worst App in Appstore!!!!!

OMG ... Put my finger where?. What a useless app. There are enough finger prints on the face of my iPhone without having to stick my finger in middle and the rotating the phone to find north. An anologue wrist watch worms better to find north Give this a 1 out of 5

Literally the worst app I've ever downloaded. Of the more than 1000 apps I've downloaded since the App Store was in existence this is the absolute worst app ever . The developers should do the universe a favour and remove this app for all eternity. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

No idea why?. I have no idea why this app was created? To plot the position of the sun at any given moment of the day? Ridiculously lame. If the thing also actually worked as a real compass it might be worth it. But it doesn't, so it's not.

Don't waist time. Bad app

Basic Survival. The most basic electronic version of a compass. This type of compass can be found in all great outdoor survival guides, using a watch. Thanks for sharing this unique and easy to use electronic application.

DONT DOWNLOAD. IT DOESNT WORK AND BREAKS YOUR PHONE

DO NOT DOwNLOAD. This is a malicious app. I downloaded it and my iPod on my iPhone no longer works and only displays 'no content' I can not open any other apps without them crashing before they load. Do not take the risk of downloading this app like I did even after reading a review warning me. So again, do not download this app. I'm contacting apple to get this app kill switched.

Baddddd. Fuc kkk this app this is stupid! :(

C r a p. This app. has officialy won the stupid app. Award.....

Cool App - Read The Instructions!. Hit the "i" button to read the instructions. Basically this app uses your finger to cast a shadow and then lines up N with true North. A really neat app which is getting unfairly blasted because of people who don't read instructions! Works nicely too!

Not to useable. Lol, everytime I wanted to use it the clouds decided to hate me. It's a smart idea for an app and probably really useful if you go hiking and need a compass. But wasn't to useful for me.

Accurate?. I had a program like this on my Palm that used the time, lattitude, longitude and shadow to get an accurate compass reading. This program does not use geo location for some reason so it is probably only accurate if you happen to live in the same area as the programmer.

Cool. Cool but simple. For those who say "I don't know how this works " why don't you read the instructions, go pee your pants. And why don't you use your brain for once?

Great app!. It uses the time on your iPod iPhone and changes the angle according to where the sun will shine. Great app and it has never caused any problems for me.

Finally!. Had been looking for a compass for iPod touch. Since this is based on sun position, I can use it outside and without wifi connection. And let's face it; if you're outside needing a compass, you're not likely to be near a hot spot.

READ. THE. INSTRUCTIONS.. It works, but OH NO. IT DOESN'T DO ALL THE WORK FOR YOU. WOE IS YOU. Really, it's not difficult, and it's the best we non-iPhone users can get. Got an iPhone? Dandy. Go buy one that's capable in the dark. Otherwise, stop complaining an adapt. Or, even crazier, go buy a real compass. (They even make some that glow in the dark.)

Offset the idiots. It is a good app using the time of day and your fingers shadow just don't be an idiot and think that it can just magicly be a magnetic compass it is a solar compass at least it made it easy by just. Telling you where your finger should be you don't have to look it up in a chart

Best. This does work. The dash thingy changes with the time of the day. Just read the directions and it works. People think it's going to be like the 3gs compass but it's not. The only bad part is u need the sun

CLARIFICATION!!!!. For those who do not understand ths must go to school!! In younger and I figured it out...you can only use it during the daytime because you set your phone or touch on a table in sunlight and put your finger in the center and it points to where north is the north in the compass must be facing away from you.  a kindergardener could figure this out faster than most of these people sating its frozen or it crashed.

OH MY FRIGGIN GOD. PEOPLE ARE RETARDED. THIS APP IS AMAZING. IT WORKS. The light isn't supposed to move. Lay iPhone down flat. Put your finger in the middle vertically. Like an upside down T. And spin the iPhone so that your finngers shadow lines up with the light colored line. The direction that says north is pointing north. THATs HOW IT WORKS. PEOPLE ARE RETARDED

Regardless.... Regardless of what other people post, this app does work and for me being an ex-boyscout it is amusing. Plus sure the rises in the east and sets in the west but it the times like 10:20am when the sun's point in the sky is not in a straight line with the "direct" path the sun takes. Anyway it's a good app for what it says it does.

Whats wrong with u 1 star reviewers?!?!?!?!?!. THIS APP WORKS AS ADVERTISED. a good update is have it work at night. also you shouldnt listen to people saying change it. its good for people like me who dont have wifi so i cant access google maps or GPS

Pretty simple if you actually think.. Took a bit to understand, but yes this application does require manual movement in sync with the clock on the iphone. It's more like an ancient type of compass. Don't expect it to work like you're modern day compass. The clarification could be a bit better on how it does things, but overall it works well.

Not bad. I got this thinking it would be like the one built into the 3GS but it requires you to do things manually. I do like it still though, lacking a 3GS it's still a good option for those of us who don't know what way we're facing when we come out of the subway =)

Great app!. I think it works great but alot of people probably just don't have the patients to try to actually figure out how to work it. I measured it to a real compass and it was perfect! the only down side is that you can't use it at night

Works fine, read the directions. Probably the simplest way to make a compass. Use half an ounce of brainpower and it'll work perfectly. Great for any hiker or outdoorsman. Pros: will work without cell service, wi-fi, ect. Cons: useless at night or on really cloudy days

A-mazing. Works great For those of you that don't know how to get it to work it used your iPods time and location to determin where the sun should set shadows by knowing where the sun is it can tell you where north is

Great and creative app. This is a great app! People who don't understand that the earth revolves around the sun may have some problems with it. Read the directions and appreciate how elegant this app truly is!

Useful but can be improvised. This should have been called a sun dial instead of a compass. Can come in handy. I wish there were a feature where you can lock the point where the shadows intersect and then the compass would start rotating using the accelerometer.

Good for iPod Touch. This app DOES work. Read the directions. The image is NOT supposed to change; you have to rotate the iPod. This sunlight based compass is the BEST you can get with out a magnetic compass sensor in your device. Read the directions, people!

Works but not precise. Like most tools that use the sun's shadow this compass is difficult to use and inaccurate during midday when the sun is directly overhead. From 11:00 am till 2:00 pm compass was off by 20 degrees or more to the West. By 3:00 pm it was only off by 10 degrees which is close enough to navigate by. A straight stick about the size of a pencil works better than a finger.

It is what it is! Great fun.. I do not get it. I guess all those bad reviews haven't been watching the survival movies where people walk out using their watch for a compass. This is so much easier!

Excellent. Fun little tool. I didn't expect it to do much and it doesn't, but it does all that it claims to do. Luckily, if I go camping or put myself into a position where I may get lost, I bring a REAL COMPASS, and don't rely on an electronic device.

Very interesting.. Despite what some may say about it not working, it actually works. Following the directions, just turn the device till your finger covers the shadow. It worked! I gave it five stars for creativity and usefulness.

it's works. believe it. the only reason why it doesn't work for people is because they are too stupid to figure out how to do it for those who say the tilt measuring instrument inside the iPhone could show north it would have to have a magnet on it. tilt cant measure cardinal direction

No, its not a compass. This is a picture and a set of instructions that, if followed, will result in you turning the iPhone until the top, or where "North" is on the picture, will be north, sort of... I guess if you life where the developer lives, it will be more northish than if you live somewhere else, and God help you if you live in the Southern Hemisphere. Really, don't bother. Nice idea Masayuki.

Read the instructions!. For everyone who is complaining and leaving one star reviews, you obviously haven't read the instructions. This is not a magnetic compass, it determines direction based on shadows. It is impossible to create a magnetic compass app when there is no physical compass in the hardware! Only the iPhone 3GS has a compass, otherwise, it's impossible to use something that doesn't exist. If you were actually lost, this method of determining direction based on shadows could keep you going in a straight line.

Simple and useful!. For those who are giving bad reviews, please read the instructions. If you still can't figure it out, stick to camping out in your backyard.

Exelent app. Read the directions!!!. Please don't listen to any body who gives this app a bad review. They are just ignorant and have no common sense. If you just read the directions you'll find the app works great and actualy at a decent degree of acuracy. It works just like a sun dial. So I guess if that's too much for you.... Great app!!!

Simple and neat. Yes it is a simple and quite neat idea. Of course you can use GPS -- but what if it is not working? Anyway, its not bad at all for a free app using little memory. You may even be able to teach your kid a thing of two about direction (besides how to use a GPS). Good job!

Does free mean anything?. Hey this compass might not be like a "compass" but it's free and I can't wait till I try out this compass the next day. may be a few kinks to work out but the bottom line is free is good. also the low ratings are ingnorant. Read the intructions before review

Does not work. I installed this application one year before but it did not work. You always need sun to make it functional and some times it did not work with the sun either. I kept it with the hope that I may receive any update, which may work it more functional but now after one year, I'm totally disappointed and now deleting this app from my iPhone. I should have taken it out long time before but I was just too optimistic.

Get over it. It works. Does exactly what it promises. And truly is a one click app. Good for survival situations when gps and edge are not available. I recommend using a stick instead of finger for easier visibility. Needs a celestial component for night time use.

Listen. You guys are all stupid I have a 3g s so I don't need this but u guys realize that if you know which way is north, than u know west east and south. Some people were complaining that u only saw which way was north. This is a great app! 

Compass free. This is simple but really great. Reminds me of scouting trick using wrist watch to locate north. But I never could remember whether to point the 12 at the sun to read hour hand or point hour hand at sun to read north at 12 o'clock. This app solves that problem. Real easy if you know where sun is.

Doesn't work at all. I tried to use it, and nothing happened. I turn my iPod around, and all it did was have a light flashing on east. I walked around a bit, and still nothing. Crappy app. Don't waste your time. And for all u saying just read the directions, the stupid thing wouldn't even open them. I tapped the direction icon 10 times and got no response what so ever. Don't tell me to read the instructions. It won't open them. And what's the point if it only works during the day? Just do your self a favor and DO NOT down load this junk. Ok, so I gave it a second chance just now and did what the indtrustions said, and... NOTHING WHAT SO EVER HAPPENED!!!!! >:( Just a scam. God, I wish I could give it zero. And 4 all u saying that if u give it one u can't read, That's kind of rude!!!!!! >:(

Works well in the sun. It works like a directional sun dial, using the time of day and the sun's position to find direction. It's simple to use and accurate enough for everyday use. It could be quite useful if you are in a place with no good landmarks to go by.

Extra feature!. I was lost in the woods and this app along with a trail map I downloaded helped me find my way back to safety. Also, this app has the added feature of a built-in broad spectrum IQ test. Enjoy the reviews!

It works!!. I will tell you, I thought it was going to be a more "automatic" type app if you will. It wasn't, it's a bit more manual in the since that you and your finger are moving around just before you get the "Perfect" SW direction! :) I does work great! Enjoy.

App works perfectly. The apps works exactly as advertised. If you don't read the directions or can't understand them, look at the screenshots in the App Store. Don't downrate it just because it's not doing something that it's not advertised to do.

Great app!. This app deserves an award in the hall of fame for art, simplicity and an elegant solution! It's a little hard to explain but it back-figures where your shadow would be at that time of day, and knowing the sun's location it calculates North. Bravo!

Ignore the bad reviews!. If the rest of the morons on here had read the instructions, they would see how this app works. It is a fully functinal compass in sunlight, and won't turn to indicate north. This works like the watch hands trick to determine north, so don't make assumptions!

Learn to read instructions. You people are so stupid! The developer finally added instructions and even put them in the screenshots! Yet you fail to understand how to use a simple compass. Stop assuming everything is used the way you think. People are getting lazier and dumber now... How sad...

Only compass app for iTouch!. Since the iTouch doesn't have GPS built in, none of the other compass apps will work on it. While this app may seem frustrating, reading the instructions first will greatly reduce the stress of learning how to use it. It does work and all it requires is your finger, sunlight, and a little patience.

It works as stated. Read the instructions, and if you like it, don't give it 1 star... I used it a few times and it works. It's very simple, yet effective. It there's no sunlight, find some, or get yourself a silva magnetic compass and stop whining.

It, uh, doesn't work. Crashes.. I would love to have a working compass and would find it very useful. This just points in the wrong direction and then crashes. And then falls down and chokes on its own vomit. The positive reviews I read, I dunno, they must not have actually tried to use this. It's free, and yet I want my money back. I even clicked the support link here on the App store for this app, and it goes to a page on the developer's site that just says "Coming Soon". I think this app will be GOING soon. Bye bye.

Try it anyway. This app is fantastic. The low rating is indicative of our educational system. Please try to figure this out and learn something that might save your life one day.

Awesome. I know I'm a minority in these reviews but this really isn't a bad app. All it foes is change the shadow on the screen for different times of the day. And you just need to put your finger in the center and turn your iPod/iPhone until the shadow from your finger overlaps the shadow in the screen. It's that easy!

Sun dial!. Some idiots can't follow instructions. I guess it's not entirely their fault as the name is misleading; it's not actually a compass. This app is a good last resort if you have nothing better on your hands to tell direction.

I get it. I was confused about this app until I read the comment that talks about using old school Boy Scouts tools with it. The ( i ) info on the app never opened for me. But for those of us who don't know the technology, neither old nor new, I think a "how it works or how to use" should be included on the info section, that's all.

Useless and Pointless. This is a pointless app to have. It is useless and takes up unrequired space. Apps should be more advanced since they are made for advanced products like the iPod touch and the iPhone. Also both products have free maps and there will never be time when you are lost in the woods and your gps on your iPhone/iPod touch won't work put you compass will. If you bought an iphone you could just call for help. In just one sentence, this product is pointless and useless.

This is great!. But what is better and much more entertaining is reading the reviews! Of course if you don't understand how to use it the reviews will likely puzzel you. BTW. For those of you saying the app is not worth it: it's free. If you do not understand how it works you might want to consider taking a few basic geography or science refresher courses. Fun for the brainiacs here: don't download this app; instead use your phone to triangulate your position and figure out North from that.

Haha. I find it hard to believe and sad that so many people can not figure this out. As far as it using it in the mid-day sun, line it up with the shadow of your body. Great app, low tech solution that doesn't require much thought. You would.

What has the world come to?. When people can't read SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS and do a LITTLE bit of work themselves? Sorry, but if your expecting everything to be done for you then get an Iphone 3gs and download a magnetic compass app. People are so lazy nowadays.
