FINAL FANTASY IV Comments & Reviews 2026
I’m forced to only give 1 star. It’s probably worth 4 stars. The game is beautiful and has the best soundtrack of any version of this game. I’m only giving one star because I spent 20 hours to grind all the achievements and the final achievement never unlocked. I have 29/30 achievements and the last one is “earn all other achievements”. Total joke. I don’t recommend grinding for achievements because there’s a chance you won’t even get them. If they fix this bug I’ll change rating to 4 stars.
Great game but dumbed down. Awesome game but they made this substantially easier from SNES versions for two main reasons: -cure spells are automatic -tough monsters are on a delayed and easier fight sequence I almost feel insulted at how much easier they made this for us.
Sudden Crashes…. Surprising this 30 year old game is to much for a iPad. Graphics looks great but the chugging between transitions triggers “is going to crash?” Spoilers yes it will so save often. I love the quality of life changes from the original but come on. Make it playable.
Great but schemes are broken. It won’t unlock some of the achievements, needs a fix. Other than that really enjoying it
Great classic. I love this game but it would be better if we could use a controller with it.
Crashes constantly. Love the game, but crashes frequently which gets in the way of enjoyment. Could be because we’re playing on an iPad? Anyway, I’ll update this if they fix this problem.
Welcome take on a classic. This was my first RPG back in the 90s, and I’m happy to say it holds up. I’ve played most versions of IV, most recently the 3D one. If there’s something about the 3D reimagining that I disliked, it’s how slow the whole experience felt, from combat to dialogue. Every little fight took like a minute to resolve. In this version you can get through most random encounters in 20 seconds, which keeps the pace up, like the original did. The music is outstanding and the rearranged tracks strike a good balance between the classic MIDIs and real instrumentation. All sprites look fantastic, and they’ve added really cool particle animations to spell effects etc. Negatives are: - Horrible font, would welcome an option for the classic pixel fonts - No controller support - Touch d-pad is awful, use tap to move instead (though tap to move doesn’t work for discovering secret passages) - Easier than the 3D version (I never wiped in the entire play through)
downgraded translation, choreography. loaded this up on an iPad Mini 4 and: - things are quite slow - i was able to hang the app by trying to load the bestiary before playing the game once in the game, i found it strange that: - the text is so clear yet the sprites/environment relish in the pixelated feel - the new translation is awful - why remaster the soundtrack if you are down-mastering the graphics? other thoughts: - no augments? woof. know what would have made this nostalgic game fun/worth it? re-introducing the “bug” that allowed you to duplicate weapons by re-equipping them in battle. seems like a missed opportunity. thanks for at least including cecil’s darkness ability. for the record, the DS/polygon-character remake is the best version of this game.
WAY TOO EASY. Zero challenge. SNES version was way more challenging, took twice as long to level up, and you had to level up to beat the bosses. You can’t walk through the 4 elemental fiends with no sweat in the SNES version like you can with this. Redditors who claim the game was always this easy are lying. Try for yourself on SNES and see if you can beat the 4 elemental fiends with ease like you can in this version. You can’t. This version also has the least amount of content. The 3D version is better. Way more content and it’s challenging. With the pixel remaster you are stuck with super easy difficulty and a shorter game. Also you can’t skip cutscenes. I’m on my phone just let me skip the cutscenes.
Now with Controller support it rocks!. Now that this game has controller support, you can pair a PlayStation or Nintendo pro controller and it is awesome! Music is great, game is great! If you like classic RPGs, you will love this game! Highly recommended!
No controller support. Square Enix continues its trend of questionable decisions. Is it really the ULTIMATE way to play this classic game if I can’t even use a controller (backbone or otherwise) with it? Get it together SE!
Please create quicksave on app close!. I’m used to mobile games always creating a quicksave if you close the app. Closed accidentally several times and lost progress. This is standard with mobile titles.
Controller support please!. I’ve been playing square games for years, and it’s a pleasure to continue. Controller support is what’s missing from this great legacy of games!!
Rare Drops. I love the pixel version of this game. It’s beautiful, and the soundtrack is wonderful. This is the first version that felt closest to playing the OG SNES. I’m loving the nostalgia of playing my first FF again. My only complaint is the rare drop rate. While the rare summons are easier to get, the rare weapons and armor are so difficult. I am at the point were I think the Artemis Bow does not exist. I’m at lvl 99 now and probably farmed at least 2000 Selene Guardians. 😭
Time Capsule. Absolutely love the Pixel Remasters. These are perfect time capsules to my childhood. Everything is the same but with improved graphics and easy playability on mobile - you get the choice of touch controls or tap to move. If you want controller support, then I suggest you play on Steam.
Last Achievement Wont Pop. Is anyone else having trouble with this? Last achievement is the achievement for getting all achievements and it is still locked. Anyways. Good game. This port is too easy, but the interface is good. Would be nice to have more features like old endgame content, swapped music for original, etc. FIX ACHIEVEMENTS PLEASE
An excellent game; reviewed bombed because of controller support. A flawless remaster of a timeless classic. It’s really a joy to play on iOS. It would be 5/5 if it weren’t for review bombers.
Please add controller support for this version of Final Fantasy IV. Please and thank you. I just bought this backbone controller and it is not compatible. Please make it compatible. Thanks.
No OG music option. The game looks great, and the music sounds good, for all intents and purposes, but some people actually want to play the game they remember, and this soundtrack does not have that same retro feel. It would be great to have an option to switch to the original sound, since that is a huge part of what made the original game so great, and is something that got me to purchase this app, which I probably won’t play now.
Love the game but.... I appreciate the pixel remaster for its upgraded looks to original pixel style and giving me nostalgia, (I like that better than the ds look). I do, howerver, wish that there could have been the option to enable/disable added content from other versions like being able to use the former party members again near end game in the gba version or augments. Even though it was nice to replay this game, those options would have made it feel like it was worth my money. I suppose it will be the same for 5 and 6 as well... I may have to pass on those and just enjoy the memories of when they were brand new to me.
One major flaw. There is absolutely no option to play the game in portrait mode. I hate using landscape. There was no warning that we would be forced to use land scape viewing only. Fix this. It’s a mobile game, we should be able to play with one hand if we wanted to!
Better than you think. I was skeptical… But the soundtrack is stunning. The subtle effects are great for quality of life. And the font, which looks terrible in screenshots, is extremely easy on the eyes in motion. Happy to finally complete my FF IV journey.
Good old FFIV. Plays well. Graphics look great and reminiscent of the classic SNES version. Only downside is that it seems to only be the “easy” version. For those unaware, on original release in Japan, an easy mode cart and hard mode. In the US only the easy mode cart was released. Later rereleases (like the PSP version) did include the hard version. While it’s nice to experience the game again closer to its original style, having hard mode available would be a welcome option.
Controller support. This is a great game with wonderfully updated graphics that are true to the original. The score is excellent and compliments the great story. The touch controls are good, however, lack of controller support is an unfortunate oversight which really effects gameplay. I can’t imagine why controller support was not included.
Controller option. Wish it wasn’t just touch play
Great, but Unstable. Hello! This is one of my favorite games, but I have now gotten to a point where, when I use my strongest spells, the game freezes. You gotta correct this stuff. I’m going to spoil a lot if I explain how and where it’s happening, but it’s near the end of the game with end-game abilities; it happens, specifically, when I use auto-battle. Please fix this, and it’s 5 stars all the way!
Nostalgia. The music is a huge upgrade from the original SNES version I played. I never played the mobile FFIV due to the 3D design that I found ugly. I am enjoying it greatly, partly from nostalgia and partly from the upgrades. I wish tap movement would go through tunnels, though. Font seems OK on my iPhone 12, but could be improved as well.
Just needs controller support. Please update for controller support! I love this game and there are so many amazing controller out there for phones now.
The ONLY reason I’m not giving 5 stars…. The only reason this masterpiece isn’t getting 5 stars is because of Square Enix’s puzzling decision not to have controller support. Don’t get me wrong, the touch controls work fine but are not ideal. The Steam version supports controllers and other Square titles like Chrono Trigger and even other FF titles support them on iOS so what’s the deal?? Also would really prefer a console port of these games since they belong there. Still one of my favorite Final Fantasy games and they nailed it when it comes to the soundtrack. Please add controller support though. Please!
True to the OG. And with welcome, subtle changes to graphics and musical score. The UI is crisp and auto battle is also nice. That said, very disappointed at the lack of a Hard Mode option, and I do not see any NewGame+ mentioned anywhere. FFIV is a classic, but it is a notoriously easy game, and for replayability sake, I wish Hard Mode and NG+ were here. I also think there was a missed opportunity here to package The After Years within the remaster, as most people have never played or even heard of the “sequel” to FFIV. All in all, if you’re a fan of OG FF, grab this, it’s clean and legitimately well done. I just wish there more options to tinker with.
So far, so good.. This was the first big adventure game I played as a kid. I still remember getting Final Fantasy 2 for the SNES on release day. I have such fond memories of playing this game. So far this game is bringing back some really good memories. The graphics are crisp and a little cleaner than I remember, but I do welcome the changes. The upgraded audio is fantastic. I do wish there was an option to use the original 16-but audio as well, maybe in a future patch. I also enjoy the auto battle with faster speed for some the generic random battles, and no mods to turn off random battles. My only real gripe is the same with any console game on mobile, I am not a fan of touch screen. I play this at random various times (like at work) so using a controller is pretty much a no-go anyways. But being able to play this anywhere is being super cool. Can’t wait for FFVI now.
Fair recreation. I played this way back when it was called ff2. It seems a lot easier now than then. For some reason, elixirs aren’t showing up in my inventory. That’s a big deal when you have a lot of spellcasters in your party. Like part 3, tap mode doesn’t work with secret doors. Kind of disappointing.
Glitchy. This is a glitchy mess, but the worst thing is just how bad the directional pad is. It makes the game almost unplayable. Considering all the other games have the same issue, it’s gunna be a hard pass.
I love this port!!!. It’s a very good release. After playing for awhile, though, there’s a lot more that could make it worth the price. For example, Controller Support. I could suggest adding the original soundtracks, not saying the new arrangements are bad -they’re amazing, in fact - but the feature would at least make it worth the price. Even then, the ports are very well made. My only other complaint is how small the battle UI is on an iPhone 11, but that’s it. The QoL updates make the game a lot fun, the music is very good, as well as the sprite work. It’s very good, I very much love FF4, it just needs a little more to make it worth the price.
Controller support.. Please add controller support squareenix! otherwise pixel remaster is great! Wonderful remixed music by the original composer. Graphics are nicely done. extra features such as quick save and auto battle are a nice feature. Don’t know why they haven’t added controller support. Old school gamers don’t like touch controls.
Still no controller support on any pixel remaster. I was hoping that since FF4 remake on IOS had controller support this version would too but it does not. Game is amazing looking and the soundtrack is awesome. If youre a person who likes touch controls dont hesitate to buy but i dislike them and prefer controllers for games originally designed for controllers. So they got my money on all of them but im not a happy customer yet.
Rare Drops. Would be higher but you will never get rare drops to drop even after over a 1000+ battles. They increased pink tail and now you can get it in 10 battles but if your farming more ribbons and protect rings don’t waste your time farming you’ll never get any extra ones. Adding new game + and hard mode would be nice as well and controller support.
My Favorite Final Fantasy but AWFUL controls. I’m okay with onscreen controls generally, but this is god awful. The graphics are beautiful. It looks like the wonderful PSP port of this game. But why, dear lord, is it so difficult to control? I was disappointed that the version of Final Fantasy games you had in the store was no longer available, so all my save data was lost coming to this version. I created a new AppleID in divorce, but I finally decided I’d buy them (again) just to be presented with a prettier version I can barely play. My character wants to move all over the place. I don’t mind the onscreen text appearance as some do, but… These controls have got to be fixed. Also, why no Spanish translation? 30% of Americans speak Spanish? The sad thing is, I know none of this is going to be addressed. This port has been out for a while. I saw and ignored the bad reviews because I really missed the story and music from this game. Alas, I don’t know if I’ll be able to replay it on my iPhone. My only hope is maybe Apple TV with controller support? Ugh. Why couldn’t this just be a clean direct port of the perfection of the PSP perfect port?
Controller support please!!. Not at all sure why, in the year of our lord 2022, there is still a need to call upon games like this that natively supported controller to do so on iOS. Just make it happen! 5 stars if added.
Great version, with room for updated improvement. Great remake of a classic game. One thing that would make it five stars: 2. Include the lunar trials and being able to select characters at the end similar to the GBA version would be great!
Achievement glitch patched. The glitch preventing achievement completion has finally been patched alongside several other QOL updates. 🎉
Great!. The music alone makes it worth. A joy to play on my ipad.
Worst Version of FF4. FF4 is my favorite game of all time, but this release is awful. As a mobile title, it suffers from illegible narrow font and a poor interface. Too much of the screen is filled with the movement ring (tap movement is unusable due to mandatory hidden passages and is unavailable on all ships but the hovercraft) and 4 widely spaced menu buttons. This is a severe downgrade from the now defunct FF5/6 mobile titles that, despite controversial graphic changes, were optimized for streamlined play on mobile. Unlike those releases, this title has issues with the combat screen, with its extremely zoom out making the Evil Wall start halfway across instead of menacingly moving in from offscreen, and bizarre targeting menus which overlay the bottom windows and do not let you see current character HP once you select the cure spell. Game is also substantially easier than the SNES release it is supposedly based on- I easily conquered the game in under 9 hours without a single game over, using items/buying equipment, or grinding levels. A huge disappointment since I wanted a solid mobile FF4 and this is not it- the defunct old mobile FF4 was based on the 3D DS version and was also not optimized for mobile play. QOL improvements (autobattle, character pathing with tap movement, visible minimap, auto equip) were outweighed by awkward gameplay changes and the worst font I have ever seen in a mobile game. I sincerely hope they patch this later to fix the font at the very least, since right now it is a complete waste of money.
Backbone one support. This game doesn’t support the backbone one i would love to have this feature in the later dates.
no controller support on mobile?. The much older 3D remaster has controller support for mobile phones, and the PC port for this remaster has controller support, so I don’t understand why this version doesn’t. Was looking forward to playing this on my iPhone with gamepad, very disappointed to see it not supported.
This was actually a good game.. Alright, some minor spoilers for gameplay bellow. This game was the introduction to the new (at the time) way Final Fantasy handles real time back and forth battles. If there were issues in the NES version, I never had any playing through it. The whole process can be turned off but I played through it as it was and didn’t mind it after a while. Some battles were pretty hard when you realize you don’t have 2~5 minutes to review over your abilities. These enemies can attack whenever so it does add some urgency. Things I liked were leveling wasn’t too bad and made it easier to play through. Saw a review that said they made it easier, but as a casual player I felt it made it easier to grind if I want to and beat tough bosses I didn’t know would be randomly thrust at me. Am I unhappy that I couldn’t play as the end characters I wanted, probably. But I will not fault this game. As a “pixel remaster” I don’t see it as some definitive edition people say it should be. I never played the FF4 3D version which probably has these things, and maybe even added or changed story beats. The story was also pretty good, but I’ll forgive them that it wasn’t the end all be all standout. This game does great with revitalizing what it should. The game took me even longer to beat than FF3 which is not unexpected. There was a lot of additional content I didn’t expect as well. I’m curious if I missed anything but all in all, great game. Would recommend playing just to experience it if nothing else.
No controller support?. This game does not appear to have iOS controller support. Why? Obviously the original game does, the Steam version does, and even the 3D remake, which is still on the App Store, does. Why remove something that was already there?
Not on par with other versions. I LOVE the original Final Fantasy games so you can only imagine how happy I was to learn about these new versions. In good faith I bought the whole FF Pixel Remaster bundle. I was immediately upset to see there was no controller support. When I went online to see if an update was pending, I was dismayed to find out that not only has there NOT been an update in ages, but the PS4 and Switch versions have alternate music tracks, no encounter mode, and an EXP boost mode! As a family man with a rather busy schedule, those last two features would have been extremely welcome. I’m unfortunately going to issue request for a refund. Hopefully someday Square will find it in there hearts to make all versions have the same feature set.
Great game. Needs controller support.. I want to use my iPhone as a handheld, and this is one of the games I miss most from my PSP. Square was so close with a perfect release but didn’t add basic controller support. Add it in and this is five stars.
4 for 4. Four for four !! Final fantasy 4 get a 4 stars. The PSP version is a straight 5 stars. The reason why I have to dock points is due to certain nuances that affects the game play experience. First, the text is rather small and difficult to read. Second, the directional pad is quite large and occupies space. Third, unlike the PSP version, there is no bonus content. Fourth and final, there is no controller support. All in all if you want to support square and want a copy of FF4 on your phone then it’s a decent buy, otherwise I would suggest to just replay the PSP version for a more complete experience. Did I get my money’s worth ? Tbh it’s a no, but nostalgia in my case has superseded common sense. Even the pixelated sprites are at best average. Unfortunately this is just a watered down version.

Disappointing. I’m pretty disappointed that given this is a pixel remake, the developers didn’t keep it close to the ps version. The quality on that is top notch and considering this was a remastered in 2022, you would think it was better than the PlayStation version. Had I know this is the type of quality, I would have not purchased it, even though I’m a huge FF fan.
Controller support please. Would be 5 stars if controller supported 😑
Decent Port with Great Music. Great game in general, and a decent port of a classic. Please add controller support, though!

Level up. Too bad I don't get to use the option level up, that is the reason I am trying this new version. This review should've given that info.
No controller support 😭. Controller support would make this awesome, square really needs to add it!
Perfect. Even better than the first time I played this magical game so many years ago.
Updated Review (added a star). Previous issues that have been fixed: Added controller support! Cross-device game saves (previously wasn’t able to download save data that was uploaded from iPhone onto iPad version). Still lacking: Automatic syncing of save files in iCloud without having to remember to “upload” and “download” within the app would be ideal, and would be more consistent with most other iOS apps/games. Still no Mac OS version. This game should be a universal (cross-platform) purchase for all apple devices (Mac OS, iOS, TV OS).
No controller support. What’s the point if you don’t add controller support. You literally waste my money because the game is better on other consoles.
So far, so good. My most favourite game ever! Played about 2 hours so far, and so good. Walking diagonally was a trip at first, lol. Hoping it doesn’t crash like others are saying, as an auto-save feature is not there… that would be REALLY nice and would make it 5 stars from me. I’d give it 4.5 at this point. Thank you Square Enix, for another trip down memory lane!
No controller support. Obvious detractor
controller support. How many complaints does it take for you to move your asses and patch controller support for your Pixel Remaster titles? What kind of incompetent fools handled this project and decided to take that BASIC part of the games out? All of this, so you can resell the games on consoles later on? ou clearly need to go take a long look at what Squaresoft was during the 90s, because you definitely lost your soul along the way.
Needs controller support. Game needs controller support bad
Crashhhhh. Some bugs, it crashes, no controller support. The game wasn’t ready to launch…..
Controller support. When do we get that update!! 😕
Great but lacks controller support. The version I’ve always wanted on iOS but no controller support. To be fair the touch interface is superb but there isn’t really an excuse to exclude it
Nostalgia is prime. This pushes my nostalgia buttons far more effectively than the 3D remake. This feels like the best version of the SNES game I used to think was FF2. Controller support would be nice, but the tap mover feature is a huge bonus in terms of mobile support.
Great game, but needs controller support!. Great game, but needs controller support!
Please add controller support. Great treatment overall of this amazing game, but would really love to play this properly with controller support

PLEASE HELP/ I HAVE NO SOUND. Booted up the game after buying and there is no sound or music!!! Can someone tell me why that is?
Controller support. Please add controller support for the backbone
Please support controllers. Game is great but needs controller support
Please add controller support. Please add controller support
No controller support. I guess I’ll Ramon me for not checking, but all of they’re other games support controllers. Really ticked off there’s no MFI support.
Worst Version of FF4. FF4 is my favorite game of all time, but this release is awful. As a mobile title, it suffers from illegible narrow font and a poor interface.
No controller support.. You’re better than this…
Controller support. Game lacks controller support, which is odd as their WotL supports it
NEEDS controller support. Game needs controller support, I paid much more for this decades old game than I would any other new iOS game only for it to not be updated to modern accessibility. ADD CONTROLLER SUPPORT PLEASE.
Controller support. No controller support.
Needs controller support. This game is best played with a controller, like the original. I wish controllers were supported
Please add controller support. Please add controller support
Add controller support. Add controller support
No sound on iPhone 8. I have tried on 8, 8plus and iPad. Sound only works on the iPad.
Controller support?. Would be nice if you could use the backbone controller.

Please add Controller support. A great version of this classic but please add controller support!
Good but no controller support. The on screen virtual game pad is awkward. Bluetooth controller support would be better.
No controller support, really?. I feel stupid for buying this game without verifying that it was supported but f off.... What a joke
No controller support. Just like the other PR there is no controller support, great game just needs controller support!
