Waste of money and time. I only bought this game based on the reviews and having played other DQ games. Unless you have loads of free time trying to figure the game out by talking to all the people in the village or dungeons then don’t waste your time. Also, the controls are awful. No controller support and also no way to flip phone like every normal game out there.

Great rpg. It’s a great rpg! I’m 20 hours in and it’s amazing. The towns feel alive and the story is great so far.

First Dragon Quest Game and well worth it.. This was my first time playing a Dragon Quest and giving more than a hour of my time. I tried VIII back when it first came out on PS2 and didn’t give it a chance because the music. I am now at the end of this game and loving every minute of it. I love this game and it has become probably my favorite JRPG of all time beating Final Fantasy X! Definitely give this a shot if your looking for getting into the series because it has got me hooked and wanting me to play all the other games.

Addictive Well-Written RPG In A Classic Style. I played Dragon Quest games as a child on Game Boy and got back into them recently. Always played the monster games and not the plain old Dragon Quest, but this one I was told has monsters. And it does! And it’s cool to build up a team of them though it’s certainly not the focus of the game. The focus here is a well-written interactive story that’s touching, engrossing and funny. The port to iPhone is excellent, can hardly tell I’m not on a Gameboy. And it’s hours and hours of play too – I’ve played 24 hours so far and I’m still playing. It’s not some fly by night hacked up mobile game, it’s rich and gorgeous and fun. I hope this introduces more people to the fantastic Dragon Quest games.

Good? The best!. Not only is this a fantastic RPG, it is the BEST RPG I’ve ever played. The story is dynamic, there’s lots of variety. This is perfection!

I Noticed A Few Bugs. While playing through I notice a few bugs. When you use zoom it causes a bit of lag in the game. And sometimes the music will skip for a fraction of the second without finding probable cause for this I recommend you look into this. Other then that it's a great game and runs smoothly.

Underrated entry to the series.. I love the monster taming mechanic. Creating my own party was very enjoyable. The music is great and the story is even a little heart wrenching at times. Fantastic game for sure.

Needs some quick save options. Great game, great story. It’s in app form though and needs a quick save option.

Please support Backbone controller. Please support Backbone controller. Controller is always better than touch.

PLEASE!. Amazing game makes me miss the original “DRAGON WARRIOR MONSTER” please put that up so I can give you more money!

Great Game on ipad. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I had started playing on iphone but things are too tiny. Game was outstanding. Typical old school rpg.

Great game. It enjoyed it a lot on the iPhone X

Japanese translated. Pls I want you to introduce a Japanese translation

Great story!!. This is quite possibly one of the best JRPG’s ever made. It is absolutely brimming with charm and wit. It’s so addicting and fun to play

Horrible port. This port appears to have been optimized for an iPhone. I’m playing on an iPad and I find the graphics to be choppy and just appears to be blown up. There is no landscape mode. Obviously being a port this was designed to be played with a controller and the touch screen controls just don’t feel as nice

Great for Iphone. The joy of these vintage RPG games is how well they adapt to the iPhone for easy play. This is arguably one of the best of the dragon quest series and definitely one of the better more personable storylines. Such a vast world to uncover, and there’s plenty of bonus material once the game is beaten to keep you busy for hours. Best RPG game I’ve played on the iPhone yet.

MY GAME OF THE YEAR EVERY YEAR. While every one else is playing final fantasy vii remake and i patiently wait for my preorder to arrive i decided to purchase this game and was absolutely blown away... probably one of the best rpg storylines i have ever played period.... and long after the credits rolled i am now going back to hunt and enjoy the lore... random battles can be a bit much but there are plenty of ways in game to deal with them thru clever game mechanics and items... the ending was perfect and all of the trials and tribulations the hero goes thru come together nicely in the end to create a satisfying peaceful ending that is well worth the players time.. the emulation in this release is spot on and dare i say despite the annoying touch controls at times it is better on mobile devices with the added convenience of your phone being with you all the time. This game alone has now made me a life long dragon quest fan forever, wow just wow. BUY IT... thank you square-enix.

Great game bad lag. I love dragon quest games but this is unplayable on iPhone with the constant screen jarring when moving

Can’t play my music. I’d love to play my own music/audiobook while playing, but sadly that isn’t an option. 5 stars if I could though.

No controller support.. This is honestly unacceptable. I get that you made touch controls for devices, that makes sense. When you take away the option to play the game as intended and charge retail prices. This does not. Square you need to fix this. You of all companies understand the importance of choice. Fix this. I will not purchase another SE title on iOS until you wake up. Yet another saddened fan.

Still a classic but.... I have enjoyed the game fir the most part. There are a couple of annoying things about the game though. 1) I play on an iPad and playing this game looks terrible the way it is landscaped. In the upright position. It is pretty badly pixelated 2) The controls are pretty bad as well. I find myself accidentally moving the location of the controls. This is exceptionally annoying. This could be easily surged with a game pad option. Other than that it is the game I played all the time as a teen. Note to Devs. I am currently unwilling to buy more SE games unless I know they are made with iPads in mind and has game pad options. I will not make the same mistakes people whom played FFT made.

Still a goat in my opinion with the DW Franchise. Haven’t played this game since I was young. Purchased on a whim and was glad that I did. It has such a good and compelling story! The gameplay is simple to pick up, but you will find yourself spending time thinking about your perfect team comp, and recruiting those beastly Golems. Overall if you are an rpg fan, this is a great one to take with you on the phone!

CHINESE LANGUAGE SUPPORT. I see that the other DQ games have chinese language support but this game does not. Please add the Chinese language support it would be very much appreciated by all !!!

icloud synchronizing doesn’t work. It never works!

I hate JRPGs. I really dislike JRPGs for the type of game they are, and this game fits the mold perfectly and delivers exactly what I dislike: annoyingly strict linearity, painfully cliche and predictable writing and characters, the silent protagonist projection model, the "collect items to save the world from the evil empire" skeleton-frame plot, the tragic background of the hero and his friends, and, above all, the illusion that 40hours of gameplay isn't made up entirely of walking into "random" encounters on the grid every fifteen steps + mini-game grinding. Seriously, if they took out the grinding this game would probably take about 2 hours from start to finish with time for snacks and bathroom breaks. I purchased this game because of all the praise it receives as one of the best, if not the best, JRPGs of all time, and because it is a very good port. I had been feeling the (irrational and/or insane?) urge to play a classic JRPG reminiscent of final fantasy "2/4" that I played on the SNES many years ago. Because final fantasy "2/4" on the AppStore is a terrifyingly horrible 3D mocking parody of a once beautiful game, I hadn't quite got my fix when I wasted my money on that graphical eyesore. I should have learned my lesson before I purchased this game, but I am not entirely disappointed in and annoyed at my purchase, just bothered by the genre as a whole. DQ5 definitely works fine for iPhone without any noticeable bugs. The translation is fairly high quality for most of the characters, although the main villain seems to have difficulty forming a coherent sentence, which honestly surprised me because the rest of the translation is top notch. It is a decent port for a JRPG, which is why I give it four stars, because it is exactly what it claims to be and there is no freemium model. I took one away because I don't believe the price is justified. But overall, if you like JRPGs, then you will adore this game: it embodies everything a JRPG has ever been, and in comparison to its low-performing counterparts of the genre, it is well-written and designed. I even found myself mildly interested in the story about halfway through, despite my reoccurring grumpiness at the perpetual grind. I, however, could not finish it, but I haven't deleted it yet because I hope that my insanity will return one day and I can put my nose back to the virtual grindstone to see how it ends.

Frustrating. Doesn't age well. It turns out, you really can't go back. These games require a ton of grinding that just isn't worth your time as an adult. As a kid with nothing better to do you don't remember it that way. But as an adult, if you're honest, this just feels like a tedious time sink. If you really want to play it, grab the original ROM on a NES emulator where you can skip the tedium. Also: the mobile controls are TERRIBLE. Most of the game will be playable but frustrating--be prepared to enter a level and leave and enter and leave etc because the directional pad is so poor. But other parts of the game that require fine control, like pushing rocks or avoiding holes, is flat out obnoxious.

Fantastic Game - Fantastic Port. This is a fantastic port of the 3DS version of Dragon Quest V. Dragon Quest V is a wonderful game with a charming story about family and destiny, and finding one’s place in that story. It’s every bit worth your money, and more importantly your time. The 40-50 hours you’ll spend with this game will be unforgettable. Thank you Square Enix for updating these games and keeping them current for new generations to enjoy.

Please add game pad support.... I hate the touch controls. Other games support game pads.

GAME BREAKING BUGS, DO NOT BUY!!. I’m literally 30 minutes into this game, encounter a weird bug where the story doesn’t progress. Eventually it does, and now my entire party and all my items are GONE!!

Game freezes when rotating the camera. Almost unplayable as the game freezes when you try to rotate the camera. Playing on an iPhone 11 Pro.

A great classic nicely upgraded. The upgraded graphics do this classic justice. Touch screen game play is also well done. I completed the entire game including bonus dungeon in 15 turns. Not very challenging, grind not extreme but you need the correct monster, group. My only complaint is the translation, seemed like many conversations were poorly done. PS2 translation version way better, don’t understand why they didn’t just copy text over. You can still get the gist of the story line... A family story line that spans three generations extremely well presented. Played on iPhone... if you get a call your game sound will cut off, all you need to do is minimize the app (don’t close!) then switch back to game audio will turn back on. Tips: as soon as you get to casino put in an hour getting “monster magnet”. You only need one, the difference between hating monster find grind and finding your entire crew in a short period! Get your king cure-slime, then life is very easy.

Won't let you progress. The game won't let you progress past the boat scene... not sure if this is a legit copy.

Awesome!. I love this game, it's so excellent, it has everything I like in an RPG that I grew up with, it's sprite characters in 3D environments like XenoGears was, and also like XG allows me to see the environment from any angle and search in anything, dresser, wardrobe, clay pot, barrel whatever... The fighting is great, the score is clear and well done, I love this game, I never got to play this on the DS so even better for me. Love how the merged the top and bottom screens from the DS into one screen, that's why there will never be a landscape mode people, it's an adaption of a port from the Nintendo DS, what would you expect.

Amazing game but can’t hear the sound anymore. Just recently Getting back into playing it and for some reason I don’t get sound from the game anymore I don’t know if it’s just my phone or not but I hope it gets fixed

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic game and great port. Just wish they would update for the later iPhones to help with the fps issues.

Great Game Getting Even Better. Since the update to allow podcasts audio behind the game music, this game is even easier to enjoy! Would love to see the same for DQ8!

Great game, needs some work. The game is great DQ5 is one of the best Dragon Quest has to offer. There are a few issues like the over world has visible seams. The biggest problem is there is no phone audio (music or audiobooks) able to be played while grinding. This makes for a more grinding experience.

They really make a legendary quest that fits in the palm of your hand.. Almost every lifelong Dragon Quest fan knows every single aspect of this amazing game with memorable characters and introduces monster recruiting, however recruiting them is complete luck, but that’s the only flaw. It still appears on best of all time’s list as i can put this at one best games of all time. I don’t have to say much else about this masterpiece as its revolutionary, memorable, and still hold up perfectly to this day. And if for some reason you haven’t played it I would highly suggest you give it a try.

Autosave does not work in dungeons - otherwise PERFECT!. This is one of my favorite RPG franchises of all time. I've played them all on console and portable and keep coming back to this one because its storyline is superb. I give it five stars. My only gripe with this - and the others - is this... this version is for a mobile device - iPhone or iPad. There have been a few times where I was waiting in line someplace, pulled out the phone, and started playing... but I had to stop because whenever I entered a dungeon, I knew I couldn't save my progress. Autosave works great, EXCEPT not in dungeons! I don't understand how such a silly limitation could be placed on a version of the game ported to mobile devices... I've lost progress several times because I had to quit in the middle of a dungeon - only to watch the game reset upon executing it again... I hope this issue is addressed in the future, it is a limitation that really makes no sense whatsoever.

Amazing Core Game, Low Quality Port. Dragon Quest V is arguably the best game in the Dragon Quest series. Truly an amazing game at its core. That said, this version is lousy at best. Like all the iOS iterations of this series, this is in desperate need of a landscape mode option. That this is even an issue at all still at this point is baffling. The quick save option also appears to not work at all. Unless I’m missing something, the option is grayed out and not functional what-so-ever. And even if I am simply not understanding how it works, that in itself is a problem due to its unintuitive user interface. Just a very sloppy port all around that isn’t mobile friendly. Stick to the DS version if you have that option available to you.

I keep accidentally activating the app switcher. The bottom icons are way too close to the bottom of the screen. Is there a way to rearrange the UI elements or at least push them up a little so the game doesn’t keep awkwardly stuttering? On an 11 Pro Max.

One of the best in the series. This is the definitive version of the DQV remake, and DQV itself is one of the best in the series. The storyline was sprawling and revolutionary at the time (and still is!). Classic Dragon Quest gameplay, refined. The iOS version is like joining up the two DS screens and taking out the gap, and upgrading the resolution. It looks and sounds great on iPhone and iPad, and you can play it one-handed on your phone. It is uniquely suited to portrait mode due to being played that way on the DS (just on two separated screens instead of one joined screen). It's a little weird playing with touchscreen controls, but again, you can play one-handed!

Best $15 I’ve ever spent. Was scared at first cause it’s a mobile port. However, this by far surpassed my expectations and feels incredibly smooth for being a mobile port. Also hands down one of the best games in the series!

Fantastic game, great execution. I'm usually concerned about on screen controls, but this game does it amazing well. Movement consists of an eight direction virtual joystick with a button in the middle. You can change it so the joystick is on the left side, right side, or centered. I found it easy to change to suit how I was sitting or laying down at the time. All menus including selecting combat commands is done by tapping through the menus on screen.

One request. One of the greatest games of all time and this is true to the 3ds remake minus one thing which is controller support. Please please please add backbone or at least Bluetooth support

Third Time Supporting This Masterpiece. I’ve bought this game three times; for almost anything else I’d call that overkill. But this game is special. It’s not complicated but it’s deep. It’s got random battles but that’s it’s only flaw. I’m writing this review at the spur of the moment but if I had time I’d go on and on. This is a heart-warming journey that doesn’t pull punches, full of personality, great little asides like Treasures N Trapdoors. Long story short, price tag is totally worth it. This is a full-length studio quality JRPG with replay value thanks to the choice of 3 brides. And just really lovely overall.

An (almost) perfect port.. The DS Remake of this amazing game is the reason I got into DEEP long RPG franchises. This port brings back my younger self in me, feeling like I AM the hero. The music is crisper, the lack of the big break in the top and bottom DS screens is a HUGE bonus, and the load time is almost nothing. The only problems I have are minor at best. The grammar is a bit off at times, saying a slime when there are seven or eight. And I have big thumbs, so the largest movement circle is blocky on screen, and I seem to bump the menu buttons and times. I did have it crash once randomly when I was (spoilers-in the cave to get your dads letter) but the auto save was maybe 5 min before. All in all it's an amazing port. It is an amazing game, and I can't wait to go beat estark.

PLEASE ADD IOS 13 Controller support. This game would be even better with controller support.

Add controller support. Game needs controller support also dqVIII would be better with a controller

Best story in the series!. This entry has the best emotional story that's based on coming-of-age in many ways. Battle system is similar to DQIV but this time you can recruit monsters in your team!

Faithful update. Thank you so much Square for continuing to support this classic game. The recent update made it so much easier to grind catching monsters thanks to the addition of the magnet monster item. However, the UI is no longer located at the very bottom of the screen, which is very annoying. The bottom part of the battle menu blocks some of the beautiful artwork of the monster background, while the general map UI separates a small section of the bottom background from the rest. This issue is also present in the other DQ games. I’m playing on an iPhone SE (2020) for reference. Also, please remove the annoying white line artifact that appears at the top of the screen when you first start the game. It doesn’t appear for the other DQ games.

Perfect port to mobile device. Translates really well to mobile great game very playable and fun

Frequent player of this game. I play this game every few years. It is the best rpg I have ever played and every rpg I ever play gets compared to this one. Fantastic and in-depth storyline, fun adventures and great battle system, it’s hard for me to find anything bad to say about this game. If I really try, perhaps it would be that I got frustrated now and then with the randomly generated opponent system that made it so that I couldn’t ever have a chance at actually avoiding some enemies. Oh well though, I can suck it up. Great game.

Please add more features to this game.. Dear Square Enix. Please add the following feature to all dragon quest games on iOS. You have no idea how many people are avoiding these games due to lacking the features down below. 1. Option to change language in game. 2. Add Korean, Chinese keyboards when typing in the name. 3. Option to download VoiceOver Packs for people who want them. 4. Landscape mode. 5. Controller support 6. Mac Support

Beautiful. Quite simply one of the best rpgs ever made. DQ5 tells a story unlike any other..the attachment you end up feeling for the characters is truly wonderful. If you like rpgs and haven't played this you really need to fix that, it's beautiful and amazing.

J'adore!. Achetez, ses un super j-rpg...

DQ ports are the best. The Dragon Quest games are the best Classic RPGs on iOS. If your into old school combat and a great story you won't be disappointed.

DQV. Wow what a real piece of art and true masterpiece in the gaming world. Also 5 star port no issues or crashes played one full play-through so far no complaints at all. This one is a real gem.

Great game!. Great storyline. If you are new to the dragon quest series I highly recommend this one.

Great JRPG. Excellent JRPG that has been superbly ported to iOS. An ageless classic; definitely a must-buy if you enjoy JRPGs.

Good game!. This game’s good and fun, well worth buying for TB RPG fans. iCloud saving and synchronization between devices work fine in this game.

Play the classic. Can be played in airplane mode. Do not have to use iCloud saves. Can « temporary quick save » on overworld map only (would be awesome to be able to save-quit anywhere, sure). Quick-paced enough for a JRPG. Flawless controls and runs flawlessly on my 6S and very low battery usage(!) Played 1.5h thus far and am in love. Goodbye pseudo-games-time-Easter iPhone games for a long time, gimme a meaty JRPG.

dragon quest vii when??. ??

Love this game. Played it on the ds and love it on here too.

Great!. I enjoyed the game immensly on the DS But havent tried it on IOS yet i highly recommend getting it on Here because on DS its near impossible to find

Great!!. Love the 2.5D gfx!

Bought the game watching Netflix. Think a lot of people did the same. This is supposed to be the favourite DQ story-wise of Yuji Horii.

The best game and most nostalgic experience I’ve had in a long time. I used to play this game on my old DS since I was 5years old and I finished the game multiple time back then because it was so fun it’s been 12 years since I played and I found this game on the App Store and I don’t have my DS anymore so I decided to buy this game again and I’m loving it so much i played 20hours in 2 days lol I love this game and dragon quest V is the best out of all of them and they also have a anime movie on dragon quest V on Netflix I really recommend it especially if this game was your childhood this game is worth every penny Only thing is I believe that you cannot tame every monster in the game which kinda sucks but it’s still an amazing game

Great classic, aside from design flaws. Fantastic game overall, but inferior to the DS version. There are events that lag for about 10 seconds. Playing in portrait is ideal for me, however, the portraits of the characters during battle are very tiny, and the black space during battle is too much. There wasn't too much thought put into the layout at all. This is a great game and worth the price, especially if they fix these issues.

Recent update. The most recent update has slowed down everything from walking speed to fighting speed and it has made the game much less enjoyable. I have the iPhone XR so maybe it was the screen size change. The viewing angle that changes what direction you look at at the bottom did not move in the update and it is now floating

Just wow!. This is a good port. Sometimes, and nothing serious, I think that the controls are a bit too sensitive. Otherwise good job and bring Dragon Quest 7 to North America please!

Nice port. DQV reminds me my childhood. It's one of best RPG in the history.

Great!!. iOS needs more games like this. Nintendo is missing out on a huge market sector of casual gamers who don't have time/money to invest in pricey consoles and piles of hard copy games.

Great dragon quest port.. Best dragon quest game. I've played it nonstop for 3 days now. Works just fine on the iPhone. If you're reading and wondering if you should buy this game, just do it. Worth the money. It's a fun game to play on the bus ride somewhere. Very grindy so make sure you like that in your RPGs!

Download?!?!????. Would like to play the game I payed for. It will not download. I just download 2 other apps without hassle

Outstanding, 12 hours in. It is a terrific game. Easy to control. Great story. Beautiful original graphics. IGN review and guide is helpful. Since the game save method is true to original, I don't play it when I only have 5 minutes. I had to read IGN review to understand when and how to save. I haven't left it running in the background for more than 5 minutes and I have not lost a game bringing it back up. The point here is it is a fully developed and produced game, and it shows. Worth the cost.

A five star game has come to us. You have the download nowdo not miss so worth the money and only game that is worth playing an iOS I'm 34 years old and I play games like this back in the nes days so what are you waiting for download it now

A masterpiece. This is a must have for any RPG fan. Amazing story and fun gameplay. The best of all Dragonquest games and one of the best RPGs ever.

Great game, awesome storyline and impressive characters. One of my favorite in this series,Just can't put it down once I started to play!

Waited for this one. I have all the DQ, but I have waited for this one specifically, and I was not disappointed, worth your money. Better than all other ports, and yes the quick save works fine, don't mind the other reviews.

Controller support. Controller support!

Love it!. Dragon quest V is amazing! A classic Rpg with a story line that is still original even today. I want to write more but honestly, I need to get back to playing the game!

The best of Dragon Quest!. This game is perfection. The multi generation story line where you can get married and have kids is excellent and the rpg is old school awesome. Do your self a favor and experience one of the greatest challenging game of all time!

My favorite DQ. fix a few issues and I'd give it a 5/5. I bought this bc it's favorite dragon quest and I've never played it in English. The price is pretty steep for the quality of the port but I bought it anyway mostly for sentimental reasons. This could be a lot better with a minimal amount updating. Here are my suggestions to improve this legendary title: -please add party hp/mp to the display when not moving. It's not cool to have to go into a menu to see hp and mp. -please allow for landscape -please optimize for iPad -please allow to rotate camera while walking

Great Game, Bad Port. Like many have said, this is a GREAT game. I bought it after it was so highly recommended on Touch Arcade. I also love it's portrait view, allowing it to be played one-handed. The biggest thing that this needs is to be able to listen to other audio sources. I'd love to be able to listen to podcasts while I play, but it always stops everything else, even when it's own music is turned off. It also needs quick saves, like so many others have said. This is surprising. I would love the buttons to be cleaned up on the main view. Many don't do anything and they're ugly.

Do you have another languages ? Like Chinese. Like RPG games

Glad it's here.. An epic game more than worthy of the Dragon Quest title. This is the most awesome of DQ games. Make a choice halfway through that will decide fate for the rest of the game! From monster recruitment to watching your hero grow from childhood to parenthood, it's all amazing!

Lovely masterpiece. In my opinion, DQV is second only to DQVI as far as the series goes... On its own, this game boasts one of the most unique and exciting storylines in RPG history. An incredible game!

More save points PLEASE. Oh my god. Are u kidding me with the saving only in churches? We need more save points in mobile games.

Won't download. Why won't this app download it just says waiting. Does anyone know how to fix it.

Pure Awesomeness. One of the best RPGs ever

Amazing. Played it on the ds and the snes and now I have it on the iPod touch. Love this series and love this game. Just beat DQ Heroes last night and all I can think about is Dragon Quest.

Controller support?. Great game, the touch screen controls work fine but I wish it had controller support

Please refund to purchase it. I decided to buy for $9.9 with yearly sale but payment proceeded $14.9 regular price. Please refund it.

Wow. I can't believe Square Enix messed this one up. No auto save on a mobile device? I went to my browser quickly to check something, then when I went back to my game the whole app restarted and I lost my progress. I'll give the game 5 stars once saving has been addressed.

Great game!. Finally DQ 5 is here on iOS! Great job SE while I agree this is possibly the best game in the series, I think it is unreasonable to expect landscape mode because you don't want to hold your iPad "upright" for whatever reason. No there is no quick save, but if you are too lazy to save at the church you probably shouldn't be playing lol

DQ5. Good game.

Very pleased!. Only negative I have come across is there is no option to switch the top/bottom screens for battle. Loading times are excellent, sound is good. The controls are awkward at first, but quickly learned. Overall very pleased!!

Audio issues. Just purchased this on sale. Audio does not work unless I used headphone jack. Game still runs though...

The greatest story ever told. ....(sigh)....I would like to take a little time to talk about possibly the greatest RPG of all time...Dragon Quest 5. So its been a little over a month now since I've embarked on this unforgettable journey through the breathtakingly emotional Dragon Quest saga, and I can't possibly stress the words "breathtakingly emotional" enough because its taking all I have to hold back tears while I am writing this review, as I have just beaten the main story and the entire 45+ hour experience is still very fresh in my mind. I've stated in my review for Dragon Quest 4 that the storylines (very much like the ones for the Final Fantasy ffranchise) become more and more engrossing and emotionally potent with each and every release, always wondering to myself "how on earth can they possibly top this?!" Well my friends, I believe I have finally reached the very pennicle in story telling, the true holy grail of RPG storylines...behold...Dragon Quest 5. Ever since I made the choice to play all the DQ games on the app store, I think I was always most excited to play DQ5 more than any other title in the franchise (along with DQ8) due to the fact that I've seen multiple video reviews on youtube and other such sources that Dragon Quest is among if now the most loved, and most critically acclaimed installment in the entire series, saying that it is one of the greatest RPG's of all time, mostly due to its extraoridinarily well told storyline, and I don't think I could possibly conqer with anything more if I tried. The game spans ove three generations from you and your father, to your very own children. starting out the game as a little boy at your father's side to rescue your long-lost kidnapped mother, to growing into an adult and getting married and having kids of your own, and the way the beyond brilliant writters spanned the time between generations, chock full of UNFORGETTABLE bonds and friendships, as well as some of the most heartbreaking and forboding events in videogame history, is absolutley nothing short of miraculous. See, just as I was writing that last sentence, all those heartbreaking moments came flooding back, and I had to pause to hold back a few tears. Not all is despaire however, because this game is filled with enough amazingly heartwarming moments to sort of balance it all out, and I think it was the heartwarming moments that had me crying like a baby. I really truley can't ever say enough good things about this storyline you guys. As a matter of fact, as far as pure storytelling goes, I think I would have to place Dragon Quest 5 as the greatest storyline of all time, even above Final Fantasy 7...(wow). Aside from the out-of-this-world storyline, there exists one of the very best battle mechanics I've ever played in an RPG. I of course am referring to the totally A-W-E-S-O-M-E monster recruiting system! Its like a wonderful mix of Pokemon thrown right in! You can travel the world and recruit a wide array of different monsters that you randomally encounter, with an equally vast selection of weapons and armor to outfit your new furry friends, as well as many monster exclusive spells and abilities that really give birth to nearly infinite strategic possibilities. One of my very favorite parts of the game hoever is the fact that after a long day of piliging, you can kick your feet up and get lost for HOURS in the biggest and most exciting collection of mini games I've ever seen! From the casino which includes poker, slots, monster arena, and even introducing slime races, and the almighty totally friggn' awesome as @#$% T n' T board game!!!!!!!!! Even a fun litthe arcade game called "bruisn' ooze", which is essentially a slime themed whack a' mole!!!!! I have been a huge fane of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series ever since I was a little kid. With the amazing storytelling and the gorgeous animation, It only makes since that some point in my like I would eventually gravitate to the Dragon Quest games, I just wish it wouldnt've taken me this long. I mean considering that it was created by the same people it was bound to happen sooner or later. I suppose I can place the blame on the fact that Dragon Quest never got the very much deserved recognition and popularity in the states as it did in Japan...oh well. All that matters now is that I have it in my life now and I am never letting go. I know that I've thanked the Square Enix team in the past for bring these essential RPG classics to the app store, but I just wanted to thank them again...THANK YOU SO VERY VERY VERY VERY MUCH SE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next stop...Dragon Quest 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great game, not the greatest port. I love the DQ series. I've loved each of the iPhone ports thus far. However, this one seems to have some of the most problems. The quick save option doesn't work, which is bad for mobile playing. And a bit nit picky, but when there are more than one enemy in a group, it doesn't change to plural (still says "a slime" for a group of slimes). Hopefully they'll fix this soon. I want to be able to fully enjoy this port like the others.

Super stoked. Great game! Worth it!

RPGer. It's finally here!

Amazing. Very good game completely worth the money.

Masterpiece. To the last review... It's made for mobile, not ipad, it's supposed to be portrait! You don't need to auto save in towns--- that's what the church is for... To everyone else: As good as a DQ game gets.

Not a good version. As others have said, there are better versions out there. The latest version has a lingering bug that the app will not play sound if the phone is in silent mode. Can still play Spotify or YouTube or whatever, but this app refuses to make any sound… As others have asked, plz copy the ps2 port and fixe the bugs and you’ll have a better app to play
