Major Change Needed. The game is great. Nice colors, fun, a little challenging, all you need. Except one thing: it crashes a lot. I don’t know about anyone else’s phone, but I’ll be playing and a text or whatever will pop up. I’ll click on the text take like 6-10 seconds to reply and when I go back, it freezes and makes me restart. It is especially annoying because some texts are important and need to be replied to, but it’ll restart me when I’ve gotten really far into the game. I don’t know if you guys are still updating this game, but if you are, can you fix this?

BEST GAME ON THE APP STORE. Highly replayable, nice to look at (you can change the color palette) and easy to get into, I find it hard to find much wrong with this game. I’ve put more time into this game than I care to admit and I’ve only just beat it for the first time (great ending btw). Looking forward to hard mode. The only thing I can think of that I would change, or rather add, is a few more mods to take at the end of each mission. I found myself making the same build each drop. Other than that. I highly recommend this game to anyone considering. At only ¢99, I’ve gotten so much entertainment for the price.

Best Game on iOS. I've had an iPod/iPhone for more than 5 years and never have I had this much fun with a game. Never have I played a more responsive and fluid game on any touch screen device. Technically, the game is nearly flawless. Downwell is an easy to learn but difficult master kind of game. It took me about a week before I ever saw the end boss and I still haven't beat him. The constant unlockables, like different play styles and palette choices leave you wanting to play more just to see what comes next. It's always surprising you, even until the very end.

Excellent Game. The best iOS game in existence, period. I’ve been playing this game regularly for about a year now and I love it more and more each time I play (still haven’t quite beaten it yet tho lol). Intuitive yet challenging, simple yet engaging. The fast pace and permadeath also work so well for a mobile game. I love this game so much. I also love just paying a flat fee and then never seeing a single ad. Such a rare and beautiful thing. Plus, I’ve played more hours and had more fun with Downwell than I have with some full-price console games, so safe to say it’s well worth the price.

Long time gamer first time all the way down. I downloaded Downwell two years ago when it came out and beat it for the FIRST time yesterday (the final boss is insane). Just to give you an idea of how insanely fun this game is, perfect combo of old school gaming and modern phone games. Amazing way to kill half an hour when you’re stuck somewhere. The controls are difficult but imho that’s a plus, reminds me of double dragon II where it feels like it takes actual thumb skills. Make more games please!!!

A Work of Art. Years later, I’m still not tired of Downwell. The play control, sounds, and graphics are undeniably solid. The upgrades, shop system, and difficulty of the game are perfect. The game plays well on iPhone, PC, and Macbook (using boot camp), and its small footprint makes it even more attractive to have installed at all times. The touch screen controls are fine, but the game is even better with a paired controller.

Bought this on iOS and steam. This game is freaking addicting! Unlocking and playing all the different color pallets reminds me of playing 90's GB and GBC games. Favorite is the black and red scheme though. It just seems easier to see gems and such. Really fun game! I flat out hate a couple weapon types, but the first gun actually holds up well as long as you increase its capacity, so it's more of A personal observation than A complaint. I think it's easier to play on iOS, but I did play it for two months on iOS before getting the PC version. It just has A more fluid feel to it control-wise.

Well Done!. I'm very impressed by this game in so many ways! At first glance, it doesn't look like an enticing game in any way, and it seems like it should be played on a gaming system of some sort instead of a handheld device. But I absolutely assure you, it's marvelous! Downwell has me addicted simply because it is a one-of-a-kind app that runs smoothly and plays beautifully. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly. My favorite part of Downwell is the pure joy my fingers get from tapping on the simple controls. I don't normally spend money on apps, but this is an exception I'm glad I made. Thank you so much Moppin!!!

Fantastic. This is a fantastic game, and well worth the price. The controls are tight, the game always feels fresh, and the style is great. Random level generation means that every game is a different experience, so you can play it over and over without repetition. The progression is nice, though some more palates would be nice for a future update. It's definitely unforgiving, and a single mistap in hard mode can destroy a run. But all in all, it's a must-buy for whatever platform you have.

Fantastic!. This game is simply fantastic! It's simple, very, very fun, and addictive. No microtransactions either! The game rewards you with different styles and palettes. Not only that, the game is reminiscent of classic side scrolling arcade games, but you're going down instead of side to side. You jump into a well filled with different kinds of beasts, armed with only your gunboots. It takes a bit of time to get used to the fast paced action, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a sort of adrenaline rush. You collect gems, find gunboot weapons, shotgun, burst shot, etc, and after every level are rewarded with a new ability that is permanent, until you lose all of your lives that is. I can't praise this game enough, not only is it good for passing time, it genuinely makes you feel great whenever you get further and further down the well. Buy it! It is great!

Game is amazing! One minor problem however. I love this game, gameplay feels smooth and satisfying, and difficulty feels hard, but accomplishable. One minuscule problem is a lot of the time when I play rogue-likes/rogue-lites like this, I like to listen to a podcast in the background as I go through run after run, and turning off the excellent music is possible, but there’s no way to turn off the sound effects. I realize it would be a whole thing to go and change that now, but really my only issue with this otherwise impeccable game!

Incredible. This is one of the best games I've ever played on my phone. The novel approach of a platformer in a constant descent brings up some great aspects to gameplay, like physics based combos where you leap from enemy to enemy, in a ballet of destruction. This game is easy to play but challenging to beat. And after you beat it the first time you unlock hard mode, which unsurprisingly, is very hard. There is an incredible attention to detail in the pixelated animations and physics. I played this over and over for many months and still find it entertaining and challenging.

Downwell is Down Right Awesome!. So I am usually a fan of games like these, I saw the price and the good praise from many places and people, and I bought it. I had seen it on steam before but I just hadn't gotten around to buying it yet. Now that I have, I can't stop playing it! I have yet to find any bugs (is the moon supposed to be flickering? It might just be my iPod 5th gen acting up...) and the game play is simply awesome. I love the controls, and to hose who are complaining about having to tap each button, I think you can just slide your finger, but you get less control as you descend into the depths. The unlock able pallets are what makes me keep coming back, and trying to hit the highest combo. I love the concept, too. I live everything about this game! 10/5 all day long! -Turtle

The one game to rule them all.. It makes me want to come back every time. I just want to get further into the well and see what is down there. I don't know if it's the simplicity of the game, the nostalgic factor it gives me when I play it, or the fact that it can go from being a quick dopamine-fix game to a hour long session. Worth every penny. I'd love to have more updates added to the game, new power ups, new modes, new enemies. I'm just craving more and more.

Very Smooth, Fun Marriage of Roguelite, Platformer, and Arcade ShMUp Aspects. This is one of the best games available on iOS in my opinion, and certainly the only one that I've really sunk hours into. The gameplay is challenging, but fun and satisfying, and you can take things at your own pace and land often, or descend at breakneck speed racking up massive combos. The concept (both for the item of gunboots, and "falling based Platformer") is original and pulled off fantastically. The sound effects are kind of "crunchy" if that makes any sense, every sound effect feels natural but dynamic. The graphics are simple but have a very nice sort of minimal look with most of the many palettes and effectively get across the information you need about the things you're plummeting towards. Some animations, particularly the "jump moving into falling" animation for the main character, are beautifully smooth. The music is really great and atmospheric and I could listen to it over and over, which is good, since, this being a Roguelite, (roguelikelike?) you'll probably visit most levels, particularly early ones, more than once. If you're thinking about buying this game, just take the plunge (har) and go for it, especially if it's on sale!

Best Arcade Style IOS Application EVER.. I would like to start of by saying, NO there is no story to this, this is an endless arcade shooter/platforming game so, YES of course you will love it if you like arcade games. The thing is, unlike most arcade games, there are millions of ways to play this game. No joke. The description and pictures don't serve it justice. I see a lot of people complaining about button placement, but you can simply go into options and set "Buttons" to "No". And besides, when an enemy nears the buttons, the button goes semi-transparent in that region in order to make way for the enemy. The only issue I had with this game was my own issue, the way you hold it. But ignore that! This game is great and it deserves 5 stars. I have written one review in my time and that was to get credits, but honest to god, this game is perfect and customizable down to the color of the screen. YES, tap that buy button, YES!

Spectacular except for one bug..... This game is amazing. Looks great, plays smooth, and all-around fun & addicting gameplay that will make you say "Just one more...." This game is perfection except for one pesky bug. Sometimes, when a person calls me, Facetimes me or exit the app and go back to it, the sound turns off. I check settings and it says it's on. So, I keep switching in on and off, but sadly you need to close the game and open it back. I don't know what the problem is, I'm playing on a 1-month old, brand new iPhone 6S, so I don't know what's happening. Please solve this imperfection for an otherwise stellar game! You guys are amazing :)

Favorite iPhone Game in Years.. I do not put that title lightly. I have been playing games on my phone for over seven years. Most iPhone games age badly or have terrible micro transactions these days. This game is timeless, super fun, and has great music. The animation is fluid and funny at times. The power up system makes every game feel different. It's so satisfying to get further down the well every game. I've been playing for months but I've never beat the games four locations, because it's such a perfectly challenging game. There are four characters that play differently, so even more replay value. And then there is one of my favorite features, the color pallets. The gems can unlock new color schemes the longer you play. It's like throwing a fresh coat of paint on the game every time. I simply love this game. You should play it if you like real games.

One of the best. There are only 2 games I’ve ever played more than a month or two on iOS and this is one of them. Simple, challenging, addictive, and most importantly, elegant gameplay. I never get frustrated with the controls, rare for a mobile game. I like how easy it is to get back in to another game after you die, similar to hotline miami. No ads, nothing to buy to make the game less frustrating, just a simple, fun game you can enjoy for years.

A Gem.. Simply put, this ode to classic gaming has it all. The introduction leaves an enticing feeling as you decide to leave the comfort of your bed for an adventure down a challenging and exciting well hole. As far as iPhone controls go, this game has a smooth feel with a three button layout. The animations of the sprites are cute and well thought out giving way to the simple color palette. Overall a complete experience for handheld gaming and worth your cash. I look to developers to take something from this game in terms of style and simplicity.

An Amazing Game. Let me start of by saying that I love this game. Like, deeply. The pick up and play value is phenomenal, as it never requires too much of your attention. Holy crap, though. It's hard. It'll have you asking yourself "Why am I even playing this?!" before long (as you start again without thinking any further). I only withhold the fifth star because it would be the best game on iOS by FAR with only one more feature... The ability to choose a chapter after you've cleared the previous ones. Given that the games highest value to me is as a short, something to do between responsibilities ten minutes at a time game- it's painful to know I'll be back at 1-1 when I inevitably bite the bullet.

My favorite game on iPhone. This game is DOPE!!! Seriously, I have to really hate a game or app to leave a review. I don’t leave reviews if I like a game, I never keep them long. I’ve had an iPhone since the iPhone 2 was released, and as weird as it feels to say this, Downwell is my favorite game I have ever played on an iPhone. I loved games in the 80s, particularly Metroid which this game was obviously inspired by, so the style of this game is exactly what I’ve missed and wanted out of a pocket sized pick up and put down game. The music is perfect, the color theme is perfect, the characters and style is perfect, it’s simple, kinda loud in a fun way, medium to fast paced, funny, just the right amount of customization options, no overglossing..the game never feels like it breaks character, just all around hasn’t received the credit it deserves at all. If I were to add anything at all to it, it would be more side scrolling and just a longer game (even though for now the farthest I’ve gotten is level 3). This game will be staying on my phone permanently, it’s underpriced, the creators are underpaid, and I’m hopelessly looking forward to merch in the future. Also, no, I was not paid to leave this review. I hate writing reviews, I just finally found a truly good game. New update crashes, won’t let me play at all ☹️

Excellent Game. I have a hard time spending money on a game that isn’t optimized for my phone, because I want the best experience that I can get out of it. That was basically my only reason to hold back on this title, but when I figured out that an update optimized it for the XS Max, I immediately wanted to try it out. So far, it hasn’t disappointed, and will probably stay on my phone as a game to play on the train or when I have absolutely nothing else to do.

One-of-a-kind gem!. I have never had anything bad to say about this game. It keeps me coming back with the unlocks and characters, and gets my blood pumping with gems as I fly through the increasingly difficult levels. You really care about how much health you have and upgrades will truly help you stay alive in this action packed adventure. Starting above the well on the surface really tops things off. The one thing I would like to see change is iPhone X full screen support. It would let the player see much more of the screen with less finger in the way. To be honest if you never changed it I would still play everyday. It would be nice though! Fantastic game 5/5 *UPDATED REVIEW BELOW* Wow, this game hasn’t left my phone since I downloaded it. And that’s saying a lot because I get bored of games really quickly. You would think there’s not much to do, but that’s the beauty of it; you are perfecting the art of falling in a way that hasn’t been done before! Reaction time, patience, and a few minutes are the ingredients for a good time in Downwell. But there’s nothing stopping you from playing it like a slow paced Mario level! With the characters, upgrades, shop items, and pallete options, this game can be played in countless ways! Amazing!!!!!! Oh and the only thing I would have added has been added just recently! iPhone X support!

The best mobile game ever.. This is by far the best game on this site. This game has the quality of a game on consoles or pc, but on your phone. The gameplay is fun to play and replay, and the graphics and music is great to look at and listen to. The only thing I would say is bad is that the game doesn't give too much to make you want to come back except for the fun gameplay. But this game still needs to be more known because it's the best mobile game ever made.

I wanted to like it. I wanted to like it. I really did. But the controls are terrible and force you to put your fingers where you need to see. You can set the buttons to be invisible but your fingers still need to sit on top of them. This is a game where you fall down. However your character is on the middle of the screen and your fingers are on the bottom. You have a tiny portion of the real estate on the screen to play the game, meaning most of the screen is wasted showing you what's above you. Which doesn't matter nearly as much as what's below. What's worse is that the tap left or right controls are much less accurate than sliding your finger left or right, which would be a much better method of control. Worst of all is that the game is advertised as having elegant controls. The irony is just too much. On top of this, the description says things you gather on your trips stack. They absolutely do not. You reset everything every time. The only element of progression is unlocking new colors and character traits. Disappointing because the same early levels over and over get boring quickly.

Keep It Simple Stupid. Awesome time killer. You fall. You shoot things. You get gems. Tons of unlockable palettes and game modes incentivize continued play and keep things interesting even after you've cleared the game. Clearing the game will take a while however. It took me a dozen tries just to get to 2-1 and I promptly died to the first enemy there. The game is difficult but having to restart isn't rage inducing since everything is a little different for each playthrough. Downwell is definitely worth the $2.99 for hours of "jump in and go" entertainment.

Best iOS game I've ever played. I've played some good mobile games before - but nothing like Downwell. All of the other games have really felt like a mobile game. Downwell simply doesn't. It feels like something I could have played on my Gameboy when I was six years old. The graphics and sounds are so authentic that, when coupled with the original gameplay, you've got a serious winner on your hands. I can't stop playing. So worth the money.

Hotline Miami meets terminal velocity. When I get many games, they start out endearingly basic and some bloom into monstrously entertaining games. When I got Downwell I thought this was going to be a quickly boring jaunt into thumb-busting 8-bit territory. While not a strategy-rewarding life-devourer like Imbroglio, this is a fun time-waster with a novel way of making a fall down a hole appealing to roguelife players - players of those games where repeated deaths lead to better starting options. If you are looking for a soul-altering game, $2.99 is a bit of a question mark, but otherwise a fantastic job. Not recommended for slow types, but DW did help me dust my game thumbs off and get away from turn-based play for a bit. Just one addendum: while this is procedurally generated, it is an action game above all. Look up Bump & Jump.

Pricy, but worth it. Although it's a bit on the expensive side, such a small game for $2.99, this is one of my all one favorite iOS games. It's very smooth, action packed, and it keeps you interested. It has very simple three button controls, cool/retro visuals, and it's very easy to play. All you have to do is kill enemies and fall- there's not really any aiming- it's just a great game. I've always been stingy with prices, but if you aren't me, it's worth the money.

Great Game, but Control Problem Literally Gets In The Way. I already owned Downwell on another system, but I love it so much I figured I would also get it on my phone for quick bursts of action before getting back to work. The game is minimalist in the best way: the 3 color graphics (with your choice of unlockable palettes) instantly convey what you can land on and what is better avoided, and the single button (besides left and right movement) that combines jumping and shooting gives you a surprising amount of agility that allows you to strategize your ammo as you assess on-the-fly whether to plunge ahead to preserve a combo or to take your time and plan your next jump. This leads to this version’s major fault that cost it a star: you can turn off the visibility of the onscreen buttons, but unless you have an external controller, your own thumbs are still going to be blocking your vision of what threats you’re about to pounce onto or dodge! If only there was an option to switch the button zones to the top of the screen with the threats you’ve already passed. Still great game, though!

This game is AMAZING but... This is one of the best games that I’ve picked up in a while, there’s only one problem with it that I would REALLY appreciate to be fixed. I’m on an iPhone XS Max so I’m not sure if the problem occurs on all platforms, but what happens is that I’ll be having a really good run, then I get a text so I get to a safe spot then answer it, but when I come back the game is frozen and the only solution is to restart that app which deletes all my progress. If the developers manage to read this and update/fix the problem than this game is a hard 5 and would also change my rating. (As a side note it would also be a REALLY good change if the game would allow the user to change the size of the buttons, as I find it really off putting having to reach all the way to the other side of the screen just to turn right).

Smooth Platformer With A Great Twist. Downwell is one of the most fun and addicting games I've played in a while. Most iOS games are fun at first but I lose interest after a few days. This is definitely not the case for this game. It has a very interesting way of shooting that makes it stand out from most games. It's a little frustrating when you lose your upgrades after you die but it's fun progressing through each of the levels, seeing new enemy types, and collecting new weapons.

Amazing Experience. This is definitely one of my favorite games ever. The tight controls, great visual style, and interesting concept make this game a treat to play. The team behind this game definitely knows how to take an interesting concept, and do so much right with it. The gunboots, for example, are something you would never think would exist in anything, but they’re applied so well that you just forget about it. The controls work great on mobile, and I rarely go in a direction I don’t intend. All the explosions feel impactful, and it’s just great to sink a little bit into each play session whenever I want to play. It’s tough, but once you beat it, you’ll feel accomplished. You’ll never have the same experience every game, and it mixes up the game all the time. I’d recommend this game to everyone, and it’s definitely worth the $3 it is. (This isn’t a paid review, I just love this game).

Really amazing game!!!. I'm just going to say I haven't fully played this game, I got it a few days ago and (Maybe it just me) but this game is hard!!! But that and a whole lot of other things makes me really like it, like the fact there is no story, or that there are different gun upgrades that help you change the type of gun you have or when you get an extra 4 health you get 1 more health point, And it's really addicting. Totally recommend it!!!

SO CLOSE. I absolutely love this game, don't get me wrong. There are just a few features that hold it back from perfection. First off, there's no save feature, so when you leave the app for like five minutes you have to restart your whole run. That coupled with the fact that runs take about 30 minutes makes the lack of a save crippling. Additionally, the game sometimes crashes when you run music streams in the background. Please fix this, lovely developers. Your game is too good not to.

One thing to make it excellent. As others have said, the buttons at the bottom are elevated to the point where it makes it difficult to see what comes ahead. If the powerup/status icons were moved from the bottom of the screen to the top (say just under the health bar), then the action buttons could be moved lower and let the player see more of the enemies and terrain that lie ahead. (Putting it more on par with the PC version.) Please make this change! EDIT: After playing the game a while longer, I've noted that you can turn off the visible buttons by tapping the top bar and going to options. Anywhere in the lower half of the screen can be tapped instead, making it easier to see.

Amazing game. I couldn’t get into it at first, but after getting the hang of the mechanics it has become one of my favorite arcade style games of all time. The epitome of easy to learn, hard to master. The mechanics are very simple. It cleverly rewards risk taking without forcing you to take risks. This allows you to naturally adapt the difficulty of the game based on your current skill level. In the beginning you can land on the ground a lot to reset your gun. However, the key to mastering the game is learning to create long combos which you can do by not touching the ground between killing enemies. If you only land on enemies or in safe zones, you can keep the chain going. But why would you want to do this and make the game harder for yourself? Every time you get a combo of 25 enemy kills, you can land to end the combo and gain 1 health. If you are full health when you get health (from a 25 enemy combo or from the shop), the bar beneath your health will start to fill up. When all 4 white rectangles under your health are full, you increase your max health by 1. The key is to focus on increasing your max health as much as possible before you reach the final boss. You’ll need all the health you can get!

The best mobile game. This is actually my first App Store review, because Downwell is that good. It is not just a great game, but a perfect game for its format. It’s quick, arcade-y rogeulike gameplay with its intuitive simple controls and gameplay make it perfect to play on your phone. The combo system allows its surface simplicity to actually have a lot of depth and challenge. It really is the best mobile game no doubt, 5 stars. However, I do have complaints. As a UX change, I wish you could also turn off sound-effects. You can turn off background music, but it’s pretty annoying when you’re trying to listen to music and you hear the little beeps and boops. As an actual gameplay complaint, while I really appreciate the simplicity I do wish their were more upgrades with more diversity. The very few in the game feel somewhat limited after enough gameplay. They haven’t updated this game in a year so I really hope they make a sequel with more content. This game is truly amazing and if you’re gonna have 1 game on your phone it should be Downwell.

Great Game. Staying on my phone forever, really like it. If I could change anything, I would add more simple core colors. What I mean by this is simple, in the game, you can unlock color palettes to make the colors different. The first 3 are Downwell, Matcha, and Aqua (red, green, and blue respectively), these palettes don’t change anything but the primary color. I would add more palettes, so we can have yellow, purple, orange, and pink types of these, or even a custom palette maker. I know you get Nikaido later on, but it isn’t true to the core 3 because it changes the background. Other than that it’s a great game, add a “tip the dev” in-app purchase so I can give you more money, if the dev(s) are listening.

Great game, just fix a couple things. Please add an option to move controls towards the top of the screen. Falling down into things which you can't see because of your fingers getting in the way gets frustrating. Also could we have a chapter select option once we beat that chapter? I can make it to the catacombs but it'd be nice if I could start at catacombs level 1 after I die instead of starting back at the beginning of the game. Love the gameplay

Reasonably good for the price. I'm not certain this game is deserving of the praise it's received. It's good value for the price, but I grew tired of it quickly. I enjoy the concept, the art style is nice, and the audio and music enhance the experience. If you want to enjoy about 8 hours of roguish gameplay for a reasonable price, pick this game up. Great? Good. Now here's what I don't like: • The game doesn't save its sate in the background. If you have to switch apps and Downwell is pushed out of memory by the OS, you lose your progress. This is inexcusable for a mobile game. • When I play a roguelite, I expect to have a drive to unlock things that could potentially help me finish the game (see Wayward Souls, Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy). I want that, "Oh, that's new. Wonder what it does?" experience. None of that in Downwell. There's a dozen upgrades and around 8 gun modules. You end up unlocking "styles" that barely make a difference on gameplay. Big whoop. • Because you have little control over your trajectory, a single mistake is *very* punishing. • The controls really should be at the top. • The controls sometimes don't work. I've absolutely had instances where I put my finger on the Go Left button, and the little dude doesn't go left. I look at my finger resting on the screen, look at my dude not going left, and just stop playing.

5 Stars. Now, for those who don't want to read this review, I'll sum it up real quick. It's good, and you won't get bored of it. It's worth it. For those who need REASON as to why the game is so good, then here we go. Some people have rated this game poorly due to its retro graphics and simple gameplay. This game is superb, and an amazing experience. It is very polished and very fun, and that gives it HUGE replay value. The game is very big, and I don't see it ever growing old. It has simple controls, but requires a certain skill that must be developed. With the leveling system and the color pallets, this game is a fresh breath of life into indie retro a evade games. 1 purchase and boom. Infinite fun. Why are you still reading? Download it already!

One Fun Killing Bug. I love this game and I play it all the time but there is one bug that has almost single handily ruined this game for me. Sometimes I'll be in the middle of a really good run (Several times have been about to complete limbo) and I'll lock my phone by accident or leave the game to look at a text message both AFTER PAUSING (this could be the reason it happens) and when I try to either get back into the game or unlock my phone I find that either I A) cannot unlock my phone B) can't load the game. When I do finally get back in all of my progress for that run is reset and I don't get any credit for it. I hope this gets fixed soon it's really getting annoying.

Amazing pixel style arcade falling shooter. Downwell is a ridiculously addicting vertical shooter where you slowly fall to the bottom of a well while trying to collect gems, find gun boot upgrades or purchase health or charge upgrades from the shops along the way down. The game sports a classic retro look with its 8-bit pixel graphics and also let's the player unlock skins that will have you thinking you're playing it on your first ever game boy. After completing normal mode you're given an even more challenging mode which I have yet to beat to do this day. Even though the game is for the most part repetitive, the upgrades you'll receive after completing each level will make it seem like a different run through each time. It also rewards skilled playing by giving you health, gems and charge points after racking up large combos. The combo system makes the game feel very rewarding and gives the player a reason to keep playing to rack up even bigger combos. I have been unable to delete this game from my phone and will continue to play this for the foreseeable future. Amazing game Devolver keep up the amazing work.

This is a REAL video game!. If you are looking for a mobile game that actually feels like a "real" video game, then you've found it. It's got beautiful 8-bit graphics, excellent sound, responsive controls, and it's difficult enough to keep you going for a good while. I have enjoyed the heck out of this game. I do have two complaints- First, I often wind up with a frozen game when I leave it for whatever reason, whether it be to read a text, or maybe just having to put the phone down for a while. Exiting and returning to this app often causes it to freeze upon return (iOS 9.2.1 on a 5s). Second, it does not play well with other audio, i.e. music, podcasts, whatever. Having a podcast running makes it almost certain that my run is done if I should happen to leave it for some reason. Now, in spite of the fact that it is *incredibly* frustrating to lose my progress 2/3 of the way through a winning run, I'm *still* giving 5 stars, because this game is just that much fun. I've been playin' video games for over 20 years now, and this is one of the greats. The learning curve is steep, but the depth is there, and the end is worth it. This isn't some dandy rush/mash of blands garbage; this is the real deal. Good luck with hard mode! (^_^)

A Beautiful Game with Amazing Animation, But.... I'm going to start off by saying this is probably the best looking game on iOS, in my opinion. The animation is just flawless. With that said, playing the game on the iPhone is hindered, not by virtual controls, but by the size of the phone. It actually cramps my hand when I attempt to hold my phone the way they intend. I would MUCH prefer holding the phone horizontally, even at the sacrifice of screen usage. At least give players that option! The way it currently is, I just can't play the game.

10/10. Downwell is a simple game with a simple control scheme and a simple goal: Find out what's at the bottom of the well. After that however, the game starts throwing everything at you. It's a game that gives you everything you need to win but the amount of effort you put into it is the difference between success and failure. I've had the game for about two months and just reached the last floor of the game...Before dieing of course lol. It's retro, challenging and fun to play

Nearly Perfect. My only issue with this great game is that the controls are somewhat difficult and twitchy. Not only are they at the bottom of the screen (where you are heading), but the arrow keys are too close to each other. I constantly find myself moving the opposite direction intended when I'm caught in the game. The fire button is also too small for a quick use, and its placement makes it hard to reach at times. If the game could be played on a sideways orientation, it would deserve a 5-star rating.

5 stars if not for annoying button lock!. I would absolutely give Downwell 5 stars if it it worked perfectly. I can’t stop playing it, even though I can’t get past 2-2. I’m having a real annoying issue, and I don’t know if it’s due to the type of phone or what, because I’ve seen others having the same experience as me. There are often times when I can’t jump and move at the same time. One button works while the other does not until I tap them separately. Makes the game a lot harder than it already is. Hope there’s an explanation or it’s fixed at some point! It’s gotten worse lately, which is weird, and it’s rendering the game almost unplayable.

Pretty sweet. It's a very solid, tight iOS game that represents everything that they should be. Makes excellent use of the screen and the graphics are pretty nice once you get used to it. It's simplicity and difficulty hides hours of good gameplay. Don't let the price tag scare you away - It's worth getting and yet another home run from Devolver.

Wonderful. Fresh, fast, responsive retro style shooter - comes highly recommended. Buy it now!

Well worth it. Have put hours into it already and more comin

Beautiful simplicity. Such a gorgeous little game. I'll echo what everyone else is saying; this is what mobile gaming could/should be! Just a few bucks will get you a gorgeous, addictive, polished, responsive, full featured, (and most importantly) fun experience! Definitely worth a buy, supporting games like this is important.

Amazing. Fantastic game, super tight controls and really addictive. I'm not usually into the rogue-like games, but this one is just great. If you're on the fence, go for it.

The perfectly designed game. A thing of true beauty

Gem. This is a rare game, instinctively understood, easy to pick up yet incredibly hard to master - but you feel like you're always so close - you just know next time you can make it... The level of attention to detail is amazing, shows how much love has gone into this game. We should all buy this, play and understand the meaning of FUN

Problem. The Iphone 13 notch overlaps the game display. Also, when the phone is turned off, the game does not automatically pause. This game needs an update like the Apple Arcade version (Downwell+).

Would be 5 star if you could play in vertical mode on an iPad. Amazing game, great mechanics, with a massive omission of vertical play mode for iPad. The game is designed to be played vertically, and with controller mode it’s a massive oversight that you can’t enable TATE mode on an iPad.

Levels🥺. Please please please please please, make levels in this game! It is awesome, but with levels as well , it would be absolutely perfect 👌! I bet you MUCH more people would get your awesome game if you did that! Downwell is amazing but it would be even more so if you did that! I would never get tired of it!

Perfect game. Just what I've been looking for 10/10 IGN Please make more games

Great game. I'm really happy to see this game in the indie game showcase this time because this game certainly deserves it

Amazing Game!. Downwell is the best game I have on my iPhone, though i played it on my friend's iPhone 6 and it was a bit easier cuz of the bigger screen. I also would like to see a mode that resembles the PC version and lets you play the game holding your phone horizontally. But it is an awesome game and worth every cent!

Perfect in every sense of the word!. Fantastic, love letter to retro gaming. Such amazing attention to detail! BUY THIS GAME! Definitely worth the money

Undoubtedly deserves 5 stars. I was skeptic at first before I bought the game, but now that I have, I can say that it is truly worth the 5 stars and 5 dollars. Amazing detail with a great soundtrack. Plus what's more is your own music can play as the BGM just as easily. As somebody who loves customisation, I thought it was great how there are different pallets thrown into the mix. All in all an amazing game, definitely lives up to the perfect ratings

Genuinely Good. This game is super duper fun. The GunBoots are very intuitive and creative for an iPad app. Random enemies, creepy locations, and perfect difficulty make this game a really good time. Final Rating: I give this game a Dead Body/10.

Brilliant Game. Sound design is brilliant, plays beautifully. Addictive fun with a 'just one more run' feel.

Best well.. Downwell. Best well. Get it.

Awesome!. Super impressed to see that the framerate issue on older iPads has been fixed. It's telling that a small game like this listens to feedback and actually does something about it when so many AAA games don't bother.

It’s ok but needs more ( suggestions ). If your gonna put a game at that price, your gonna need more to be a great game •You should try adding colours instead of black and white •you should add more characters with way better abilities like forcefields jet packs Etc •for the characters, add some game coins which you can save up instead of levelling up just to unlock them •in app purchases, why not, right? •a proper home screen menu, for example settings, start game, etc on the main menu •a back function, I hated how once your selecting your character, you can’t go back

Great!. Simple and have hours of fun!

Perfect. I normally don't write reviews, however this game is perfect that I want more people to experience the joy and genuine fun that this game gives. So here's to downwell, the best game in the App Store.

A masterpiece. This game is excellent, one of my favourites games of all time. This game has an amazing control scheme and visual style. This game has no tutorial and yet, I fully understood how to play the game with 30 seconds. 9.5/10

Woow. I love this game. I am addicted

Perfect Mobile Game. This game is worth the money. It's great for a short play and for longer sessions. It's one of those games where when you die it's your own fault - and you instantly have another go because you know you will do better the next time. Sound effects are great, fantastic chiptune music. Rewards (extra themes and game modes) come regularly. There's this excellent risk/reward gameplay. Do you go for combos (and extra gems)? Or play more carefully (but with lower rewards)? Note: your thumbs will be slightly in the way on iPhone. This is only a small issue. Won't run on my iPad 3 (as detailed in the game info above) and is a battery hog, so could do with some optimisation.

Poorly optimized. Great little game but starts getting alot of slow down issues from 1-3 onwards (iPhone 5, though friends with a 5s/6+ are experiencing the same problem). The fact this game isn't supported on more devices shows optimization is needed so would love an update!

Just awesome. I can't believe this was just a couple of bucks. Compelling gameplay, cool sound design and neat pixel art. This is what casual mobile gaming should be.

One of my favourites. Instantly a fan upon download. Crazy fast retro fun, ultimate "one more go" app.

Just ok. This game is ok, it has a very short shelf life. The game doesn't change much, it gets much harder about 4 levels in. After which you are going to die, not because you need more practice but because the accumulation of things that can kill you become so stock piled that it becomes more luck then skill. There is no levels so your consistently repeating the same game, although the levels are random build, which then just means you cannot learn them to master them. A pretty boring game that has a price tag way over its value.

Definitely worth the money.. When I watched the video in the description for this app it looked complicated because of the amount of stuff in the screen. However this game is extremely simple and easy to learn but not to master. :)

Excellent game, but has an issue. I love this game! I've played it for ages now, its great fun and I can't imagine I'll stop playing any time soon. However, recently I've started experiencing a really annoying problem. On many occasions, if I either leave the app quickly to do something else or turn my phone off for a minute, the game will crash when I come back to it and I'll lose everything I've just been doing. It's terrible, especially if I'm in the middle of a great run! Can the devs please take a look at this and see if there's a solution? Thanks for your time. Great game!

What mobile gaming should be. This game is a perfect example of what mobile games should be: they shouldn't have a million micro-transactions and have a freemium style model to them, they should be highly addictive fun like this. A perfectly crafted homage to retro games that works absolutely amazingly on the mobile platform

Amazing. Addictive and infuriating. One of the best games I've played in a long time.

Wow. Very, very good!

Instant Classic. Amazing atmosphere and retro inspired visuals, excellent sound design and tight controls make this game a wonderfully challenging experience. Going for big combos is incredibly fun and satisfying. Downwell is pure elegance!

Fantastic!. This is as good an iPhone game is there is. The touch controls may drive you crazy at first, because this is the kind of old-school fast-paced twitch game that you ideally want a classic controller for. But when you get used to the touch controls, they actually work fairly well.

Revising my review. I had given this game five stars earlier this year. I stopped playing this game a while ago, but then two days ago I picked it up again and it was just as much (if not more) fun.

Addicting. Very fun gameplay; I connected my controller to my iPad and even though there are three buttons, it really enhances the experience. The game is still very fun, nonetheless.

Awesome!. Still one of IOS’s top games!

Good. Great game, would love controller support though!

Best game ever. Really love it very well done

Great game. Lots of fun. Very addictive. Great game by the developers

Fantastic!. Just a phenomenal game, challenging but fair. One of the best games I've ever played on iOS!

Downwell. First and foremost, Downwell is my favourite iPhone game so far! I love it to bits! It would be awesome if there were new modes. Maybe a mode where you start with 4 health. Once you lose one health, you can't go above. Eg: if you were at 4, then lost one, so now you're at 3, you can't go above 3 health. A mode where you get to pick your starting gun, but can only change it after completing a set of levels (eg: Cavern). A mode where you don't have a gun, but you do have a double jump and a safety jetpack (you get a gun for the boss level). Also, I saw the gif for the no blocks/platform style, and I really, really want to play it. Last thing. Will Downwell be coming to the Mac? Thanks for making such an incredible game! I'll be playing this one for a long time! :)

Falls short. It’s inexpensive but there’s not enough going on in this game. I don’t like the core gameplay loop of dropping down and shooting to slow your descent.

Love it. Great game. 5 stars. Simple, yet amazing.

Good game but.... Its a good game but i wish you could mute the sound because i like music and that would amazing

👌👌👌👏👏👏💯💯❤. Yes

Action pack. Run it

It’s a great game BUT…. I love playing this game to pass the time but one gripe I have is that I can’t listen to my music with headphones on without hearing the game audio if you can make it so that I can play my music with headphones without hearing the game sound effects that would be great thank you.

Needs sound toggle!. Incredible game, you’ve probably gathered that from all the other reviews. It feels like a real arcade or console game on my phone which is unreal. However, I wish I could turn off sound effects in game so I can listen to my own music while playing without the effects!

Don't buy on iPhone 4. This is probably my favourite mobile game of all time, but if you have an iPhone 4, the experience is subpar. The games page on the App Store states it's recommended you have an iPhone 5 and above to be able to play it. I thought I'd take a chance and get it anyways on my iPhone 4, but the game runs at 1/4 of its regular speed (which almost makes it easier, but a lot less fun). Just a PSA for anyone who's rocking an older phone.

Quite a good game. For the price and no ads or intrusion it's worth it.The levels are never repetitive and there are different enemies and ways to progress. Controls could use better spacing/placement, enemies are quite persistent and difficult to deal with (especially bats and ghosts). You'll die alot and sadly you have to redo every single level if you do. Edit: Compared to the PC version the controls and hitboxes are God Awful, look elsewhere for a good mobile game. Get this on steam instead.

Great game but crashes. Awesome game, I got it on my iPhone 7. Only thing is that if I’m playing and I exit the app to text someone when I open it again to continue playing it’s frozen and crashes. Pls fix this!!:(

Holy crap. This is absolutely amazing, worth the money. I love this game.

Playing on a 6s is a pain. The game is sort of fun but playing on a 6s means your finger are going to cover most of the actions plus the buttons are so easy to miss that you'll be steering your guy in the wrong direction very often. Poorly executed in my opinion. Must be a blast on pc though

Lag issues. This game is the best platformer in recent years. I've loved devolver's work and have played way too much luftrausers. Unfortunately, this game runs at what appears to be half if it's intended speed. It has done this since i first opened the app. I'm on an older iPhone but i thought it could handle this. Pleasebring some performance upgrades. (Seriously, im stuck in a well)

Great game but has some small issues. Downwell is an amazing game and a perfect example of a good mobile version of a game. However, the hitboxes can seem a little off sometimes and the game will often crash if you leave and come back, which can be a little frustrating.

Perfect 10/10. One of the few mobile games that is undeniably perfect at what it does, amazing pick up and play game and there is so much variety in colour pallets, weapons and play styles to where it could be played near infinitely

FANTASTIC!. Awesome game probably the best game I’ve played all day😄

iPhone X. Please please please update it for iPhone x!

Fantastic Game. Usually, apps and games on the phone/mobile are LOADED with Pointless adverts, this is what got me back into mobile gaming, along with The Battle Cats and Terraria, I HIGHLY recommend this game to those who enjoy mobile games, sure it’s hard at first but the more you play, the better you get, just like anything else. Yeah it costs money, but it’s only 3.99. 3.99 for a Fantastic game. Go play this. It’s great

GOTY!!!!. This game is simply amazing, best 2$ ever spent in the Apple Store!!! 2015's GOTY

Great Game. Really love the feel of it, the way it looks and the sound effects. Would be cool if there were more styles and maybe different modes, but definitely worth $3.99

A fine game, but.... Can it seriously only be played in landscape, with the gameplay wedged in the centre? What a terrible waste of space! Why not have it functional in portrait with the invisible buttons overlaying the (now proper-sized) game? For something I’ve heard so many great things about, you’ve managed to disappoint me right out the gate! Not a good way to be introduced to a game...

Fun. A little tough to play on a tiny iPhone se but after some practice it becomes so addictive

Awesome!!!. Shooting these monsters with the different weapons is way too satisfying to handle!

My new favourite time killer.. Seriously addictive game, well worth the price. Beautiful visuals, fun game play and great style. It reminds me of Kid Icarus where you fall instead of climb. Try it out you won't regret it.

THE BEST GAME OF THE APP STORE. French Alert: Au début je pensai que c’était un jeu normal avec une chute libre et tous sa mais non.... C’est un véritable chef d’œuvre à l’ambiance rétro et plutôt drole. Il vaut son prix et Une note de 5/5 sans même réfléchir

YES THIS GAME IS PERFECT BUT!!. IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF BUY THIS GAME <3 PLEASE READ THIS PLEASE ADD TILTING THE IPHONE FOR CONTROLS SO TILTING THE IPHONE TO THE LEFT YOU RUN TO THE LEFT<- TILT TO THE RIGHT YOU RUN TO THE RIGHT ->TO PLAY WITH ONE HAND =) Please add this option !!!BEST GAME IN THE WORLD!!!

Hall of famer. Buying this game feels like a win. I hesitated at first thinking the black and red colour scheme would eventually get too much, I was wrong. Fluid, crisp controls - fast and fun gameplay and beautiful 8-bit graphics. What’s not to love?

A level of twitch-gaming I did not expect to find on a iPhone!. This blew away all my expectations of what an action twitchy game on a phone could be. With tight controls and an addictive gameplay loop, I can't ask for much more.

Great! Less freezing please.. It is a great game, it’s the only one I have on my phone and I play it all the time. I have it on the PS4 too. But on the phone it freezes for me when anything happens; if I get a notification, or I leave the app, or do anything besides play the game uninterrupted. If I do anything stated above it will freeze and I will have to close the app to play it again. Please fix this if possible! It would be greatly appreciated.

Great game. I love this game, with its simple controls, yet difficult gameplay there is a lot of things going on in this game. I think this game deserves a lot more recognition. Great game keep up the great work.

Incredible game!. Beating Downwell (on normal) was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my life! Such a perfect balance of skill and strategy. You discover the great depth of mechanics gradually overtime but it never feels frustrating. Can’t recommend it enough!

The best. Very fun

Addicting and Fun. One of the best games I've ever played. It has amazing graphics and sound. With fun gameplay. However I recommend playing on an Ipad

Great but.... Lots of fun, but I can't put my phone to sleep or use any other app without the game crashing. Very annoying when I click a text message notification or something...

Best iPhone game, period. Please add option to turn down sound fx!. Downwell is certainly one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played on iPhone. A little tough to get the hang of at first, especially with the touch screen controls. Your fingers tend to be right in the way of where the enemies are coming from. But, it’s crazy fun and I’ve put countless hours into this game getting the skins and trying to beat my times! The music and 8-but graphics are sublime and it’s truly a full experience that is simple and elegant. I couldn’t recommend this game more. The only thing I would change is adding the option to turn off the sound effects as they can be a bit loud compared to Spotify and this is already an option in the console versions. And add more levels or a sequel, please! The game hasn’t really been updated in years because it doesn’t need to be but it would be cool to see more content with this formula.

iPhone X, Xs, Xr. No support for X series’ screen resolutions. It’s a shame, because this game otherwise shines on OLED.

You need an update. I love the game, its AWESOME. I love the pallets thats one of my favourite things, i havent beat the game yet. But everytime i back out of the game and i do it in this manner. 1 pause. 2 press home. 3 text or reply someone. 4 go back. 5 F R E Z Z E S. even if I accidentally do it, it will still be frozen which is annoying and kills off all the progress. Couldnt do 1 star since i love the game. UPDATE IT PLEASE ? ALSO the movements are really rigid! After a long time playing, plus its been a year ! Please ! Update the movements more sharper and flexible !!!!!!

Awesome totally worth $4 cad. Really fun, love the game. A tip for the developers, if u could make an option for the controls to not cover the bottom of the screen, like maybe put them on the side or on the top, it’d be nice. Can be a bit annoying falling and not seeing what’s next cause ur thumbs are in the way :) still absolutely fantastic game

Horrible. Just horrible

Fanatically addictively fun!. Best game i've played for a long time the music is so catchy i play it on guitar the developers did a fantastic job now we need a volume for the sound and music. Other than that best game ever.

Absolutely Phonominal. Ever play a game and think to yourself "This is cool, but, it would be really neat if the designers added X to a mechanic"? Well Downwell does exactly that. If you think of a cool idea that could be implemented into the game, then there's a high chance that it IS in the game. There is just so much to love about this game; from it's ingenious use of a minimalistic, but still visually pleasing art-style, to it's incredibly rewarding combos, it's just a complete masterclass of game design that needs to be taught in programming schools.

Love the game. The game is great but what I really think it’s missing is a mute mode, the sound doesn’t fully mute when I’m jamming to music and I still hear the game sounds and sound fx. No hate to them but it’s always bothered me when I’m at work jamming out and I want to play this game but with the noise it makes it’s always too overpowering. Other than that love the game! Have for a long time.

Love the game but can’t figure out how to get the music to play. I’m loving this game. It’s an innovative game and Nintendo like in its multiuse moves and items that do two things. However even when I have BGM turned on, I don’t get any background music. I have my volume turned up and have tried reinstalling the game but to no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?

Can't put the game down. This game makes the time fly by like sleeping does. It's fast and easy to learn, yet can always be practiced. There are unlockables, never too far away, always encouraging you to play more and more. This game always serves as a challenge. I have yet to pass the 2-3 (catacomb?) phase, so who knows just how far this game goes. A definite "worth-the-money"

Good game, poor Control. This game is very good, and I’m a fan of the console version. Unfortunately, on mobile is is MORE than hard to control, and I find myself losing lives when I shouldn’t have. The game plays fine, but I’m dying way to much do to poor controls, and occasionally I will jump on an enemy and still take damage. Another upset is getting hit from the side. And enemy swooping in immediately tapping me from the side. Completely out of my control!

Best Game on IOS. I never write reviews, but this game is worth it! I usually play a game for a week or two and then get bored. But months later I still find myself playing this game at least once or twice a day. The levels are always different and figuring out different strategies and enemy types is always a blast. I can only recommend this game to anyone and everyone. Worth every penny!

Amazing Game, but…. This is such an amazing game but this game really needs multiplayer mode. It would add more risk to it. Who can survive the most levels, who can finish a certain amount of levels quicker, and co-op. I am sure there are other things you could do. Again, an amazing game, just needs multiplayer.

Exciting and fun but imperfectly ported. While I can't even begin to find fault with the gameplay of Downwell, I find myself desperately yearning for a "hard save" option, as the game freezes and crashes on my 5th Gen iPod Touch whenever I switch apps or lock my device. As a result, I'm often forced to abandon any run that outlives my commute or lunch break, no matter how promising. Please either improve the game's background support or implement a non-volatile means of saving mid-run progress.

Needs optimization. I have Downwell on PS4 and really like it but the game just doesn't work on a phone. The "buttons" are super cramped and not really comfortable at all to play. Enemies that are border line unfair (looking at you bats) are downright cheap on a device where you have to look to see which input you are actually triggering. More thought should have been put into this than just a direct port...

Incredibly fun and addicting. Starts off a little confusing because there's no tutorial or how to play page, but once you get used to it, this game is just so fun and addicting. There's something so satisfying unlocking a new color completely change the look of the game. Definitely worth the 3 bucks.

Brilliant and long lasting.. I really love this game. I like how every single thing in this game does at least two different things, like how your gunboots not only attack things, they also slow you down. It makes for a game that is super simple, but takes forever to get old. Really just a smartly designed game overall.

Great fast-paced action.. I love this game. It's addicting, can be played instantly when you're waiting for something, and it's plenty difficult to keep you motivated to get better. Anyone who complains about button placement or that it's too hard is simply a casual gamer. This is a great buy.

Really good game but. This is a really good game just have a small problem with it, why doesn’t it have a option to turn off sound effects? I want to listen to my music but it guys drowned by the sound effects of the game. I know it has a no background music option but, no sound effect option? Please fix that.

Only missing one thing. A campaign mode or story mode. Where it saves between caverns. Then it has bosses as well. This would complete the game. I love it enough already but adding this would be amazing. And not a skimpy amount of levels. At least 10 boss fights and thats one at the end of each cavern.

Overall fantastic game. First things first, the reason this isn't a five star: the game has really tight controls, but no controller support, as far as I can find. If this gets fixed, I'll be extremely happy. As it is right now, this is one of the best games on the store. Simple design, easy to pick up, very skill based, at least as far as level 2 as I haven't ever gotten further than that, and again, tight controls. I'd highly recommend it.

So great...but crashes and frustrates me.. This game is incredibly addicting! So much fun to pass the time; HOWEVER....it's unstable!! I will be playing and make it really far in the game but if I exit the app to check a text or answer a phone call, it gets overwhelmed and starts me all over. It shouldn't be that hard to come back to the app and start where I left off. What's the point of pausing the game if you can't come back to it. It's happened multiple times and because of this issue I am very tempted to never play again. Please fix!!!!

Great game, really difficult. I love the game a lot, but the precision it seems to require from the player is frustrating at times. I enjoy difficult games, but wow. that being said, if you enjoy a challenge and learning a new game, i bet you’ll like this. the gameplay is addictive and fun. Just wish there was a slow mode or something.

An actual game. Couldn't recommend more. If you're looking for something to play when you're out and about but still want a challenge, this is the perfect blend. It's not stressfully difficult, but it's not easy either. You can tell there was a lot of love put into this game.

The Real Old-School Game. Now, you might think this would be a waste of money, but no. If you've dreamed about playing something retro-style, wish granted. Because with all the 8-bit graphics, the changing palettes, etc. are the reasons why you should get this for miners and fighters alike. Get this game.

Legitimate classic feel. I love this game. The way it plays, the difficulty, the music, everything. My only issue is the controls, it seems like the button overlay doesn't register presses on the bottom portion sometimes, which is pretty frustrating. Using iPhone 6s

Lag. Game is great, really. In fact it may be the best iOS game I've played. But there's lag. Lots of lag. Wayyyy too much of it. It gets a lot worse once you reach Hard mode as you have to constantly be aware of the speed of the game just to have it change at the last second, killing you. I'm in an iPhone 6s also so this should not happen. IMO this isn't ready to be released in this state.

Best on iOS. This is the best game on iOS. Period. Everything about it is perfect. Im a dark souls fanboy, and I'm not saying this game is like that series, but the difficulty, the attention to detail, the combination of simplicity and complexity - I put it on a par with dark souls and other From Software games, in terms of quality. That's as high as my praise for a game gets.

Stunning game. This is a amazing arcade style pixel game. I love the different aspects to it. The $3 dollars a little pricey but luckily I bought when it was $1. But still, it is definitely worth it. The sound effects are amazing. The different guns and abilities to earn is great. If is a all around terrific game. I 100 percent reccoemend getting it if you are willing to pay three dollars.

Fast and fun!. Originally found this game because it was mentioned on an episode of game makers toolkit. Only feedback i have is that I wish I could put the buttons on the top of the screen. My thumbs are a bit in the way of what I want to see. Other than that, love it and have played for hours.

Great. I love this game a lot and play it in my free time, it’s progression system is great, it accommodates to your skill, so the better you get it takes around as long. Quick price of constructive criticism, I think you need to patch and fix the fork and knife upgrade, when you can use it you get healed a full heart

Great on PC. Have on steam and loved it. Thought it would be great on the phone but forgot that “touch” controls are nothing like gameboy buttons. I don’t understand how people play games like this on these phones. That said I don’t understand why I thought I would be able to play this game on this phone. Now I feel like an idiot. If you are like me and are constantly wanting to toss your iPhone into Mount Doom because your fingers never touch where you think they should then skip this, or buy it on something with buttons.

Sooooo good!. This game may look like a pixelated reverse game of doodle jump, but it's so much more! iPhone version = 4* Too tricky to play & see what you're about to fall on. iPad version = 6* This is the way to play it! It doesn't just give you a bigger version of the game, it puts the game in the center & the controls on the side. Much more fun. The game is fun, challenging, and surprisingly different per play, thanks to the variety of level ups. I do wish there was a way to skip to certain levels for practice, the 4 dungeon is hard (and hard to get to) Overall, amazing game for the iOS, which honestly has mostly crap games.

Great game.. - In all honesty, this game is very fun and hardly gets boring. + When it does I feel like it could have used maybe other modes such as side scroller type levels or something like that. (It’s just my opinion but this game is still great.) =One issue though is that the music does stop working even if the music in options is on. That’s the only problem with this game.

Fantastic game worth the money. I love the game but it need to have something more, and maybe permanent upgrades instead of upgrades that last till u die or like have two different ways, one way to play is permanent and the other is till you die, I like unlocking the different type of levels that's fun but the upgrades should be permanent, and have upgrades for the upgrades instead of receiving an upgrade at the end of each level. That's my only criticism and I love the game.

Love this game to death, BUT. I’m serious this game is actually amazing and worth everyone’s time. My only issue is that the left input doesn’t always work while the jump button is held. I can consistently replicate this issue and it’s deeply frustrating because this does not apply to the right button at all and it has caused many deaths due to my sudden inability to correct my positioning while using the gunboots. Please fix.

The epitome of perfect apps. You will never, ever, ever come to a better app. Ever. Sorry if that opinion seems a little blindsided, but I've been playing this game for two months, and let me tell you, this is what apps should look like. Simple controls, randomly generated but beatable, and creative enemies and ideas. If you buy this game you WILL enjoy it.

Thrilling gameplay. By far the best controls of any touch device game I've ever played. I have played both the mobile and PC versions of this game, and both just shine. The concept is simple, the controls feel tight, and the experience overall is just fantastic. It might look simplistic at first, but I really can't recommend it more.

Iphone X?. This is one of my favorite arcade game on the app store so far, I played it non stop on my iphone 7 and is a perfect time-killer, i just need thia game to be optimized for iphone X, a bigger screen would be just what I need to prevent those sick bird and floating Eyeballs to crush my streak. So please think about it, optimize it for Iphone X please!!

A dissenting voice. First, I’d rate this 3.5 stars if I could. I got some decent playtime out of it (a few hours), but mainly because I kept hoping the unlockables would eventually yield a more entertaining game. It’s still worthy of the stars I gave it because the graphics and sound and new idea (a downward platformer) are quite satisfying. Clearly, tho, I’m not the intended audience because most players seem to love it. My advice? If you’re an arcade shmup, platformer person, indulge; if not, proceed with caution.

My favourite game. I have three games on my iphone. Downwell, 2048, and Minecraft. Downwell is by far my favourite game because it’s color theme is perfect, it’s pacing is amazing, it has endless strategies, and it’s really difficult. I have had it for a few months and I’ve made it to the boss level like twenty times but I can’t beat it! The only thing I really need to complain about is that it crashes every time I leave the app and come back. Please please fix it. Other than that, amazing!

Amazing pixel game. This is so far the best Pixel animated game I have ever gotten, I'm a iPad mini user so I'm not sure how it plays for others but for my device there is no lag and the controls are amazing even though there's only three, and the cool part is that there's so many frames you can unlock to make the graphics look even cooler.

Good game, one ding. The game is great and I love that they finally added controller support but it seems the update is missing one key feature to make it a great gaming experience on iOS, and that’s cloud saves. Controller support and cloud saves should be a high priority for game developers on iOS and I have no idea why a developer wouldn’t take advantage of said features. At least they added controller support. Maybe the next update will have it?

Great Game But Needs Support For Newer Models. Down well is a fantastic game. I’ve been in love with it for years but having an IPhone Xr makes playing the game a chore. Makes using the buttons on the larger screen much tougher as it does not extend to the full height of the XR’s screen. An update to fix the ratio for newer model phones would bring my love back for this tremendous game.

Difficult. Pretty fun game, but the touch controls on this one add an unnecessary level of difficulty. There are also lag problems when there are too many objects on screen (a ton of gems get dropped at once). The layout is not great either. I would personally allow a horizontal view, just to have the controls out of the way even if it required the play area to be smaller.

Big hands make left/right movement terribly uncomfortable on iPad. Love Downwell, and the extra screen real estate of an iPad makes sense for it, but unfortunately there’s no way to reposition the buttons so they fit where your thumbs fall. If you have big hands, your only option is to keep them uncomfortably open to reach the left button, or not play at all. Basic customization would be super simple to implement and extremely appreciated.

A well made game. This is a fascinating game. I like the music but could of made a ton of different music and randomize the levels to make every gameplay different after the cavern level. The design is also good and it gets interesting on what upgrades you choose. There should of been a tutorial so that you know what to do.

One of the Best Games Out There. I love the game, the choice of how the game looks, the gameplay, pretty much everything. I only have one request for this game. Multiplayer. Maybe, you could put a smaller well to the right of the main well. This is just a suggestion. I do love the game, but I would like it more if it had this.

Sort out bugs.. I got a new phone and waited to get Downwell as the bugs had rly annoyed me out of the game before. I got it one day I was bored and yep, they had not been fixed... - If you switch to another app (say someone calls you) and want to come back to your game, the game will almost always crash and you lose all your progress. So you have to restart from the first level which is frustrating. - When you have headphones on and open the game, sometimes the game will overtake your music app and pause it. No thank you.

Classic go to for a challenge. Just finished winning the game...which I’ve managed to do maybe a half dozen times at most over the course of 5 years or so. It never gets old. Definitely for gamers of a certain generation who like challenging, high sensitivity games. It’s a great combo of rogue like, bullet hell, platformer, and what used to be called “twitchy”. A modern day classic for sure.

Love the game, but…. No problems with controls, runs great in the state it’s in now (mid-2021), but any chance of getting Game Center achievements? The PS4 version where I first played this has them and it really gave the game that extra bit of replay value (not that it DOESNT, beating it alone is a challenge), but achievements is that extra little bit of go-to to keep me coming back. Please?

A hecking good game.. Downwell is disturbingly addictive and fun to play. Only reason it's not a 5 star is because I tend to glitch where I'll take damage instead of the enemy if I come down at a slight angle. I'm still above them, but the game doesn't like angles. Also in handstand style, you still stomp on enemy's with your feet and shoot with your feet. It would be cool if everything was inverted in that style.

AMAZING BUT CRASHES INSISTENTLY. This is my FAVORITE game by far. I'm a sucker for these addictive games like Monument Valley, Sword and Sworcery and of course Downwell. The game is amazing but the only thing this game lacks is consistency. It crashes everytime you try to do anything outside the app - this deletes your progress. So if you need to answer a call or a text, be aware, you WILL lose your game due to the app crashing. I have an iPhone 6. Nothing has been fixed so far.

High Octane Arcade Action. Let me preface this review by saying that I DETEST 2D scrollers of any kind. I have never played a more engaging, tight-controlled, all-around entertaining, beautiful, and well made app game. If you're teetering on spending $.99 on this game, let me sway you with this: a game of this caliber could appear on other platforms like Steam or one of many other eshops, with a much heavier price tag. You're getting a steal for a gem of a game like this.

The only mobile game I've been unable to ever stop playing. This is, by far, the BEST mobile game I've ever played and I play quite a few out there. My only suggestion would to be to make the jump button the entire right-hand side of the screen instead of just a small button. I hope the Devs see this because they deserve 5 billion stars. thanks guys!

One of the best iOS game in a while. I agree, wholeheartedly, with some of the other reviewers here. This is the best all-around game to hit the iPhone in quite some time. No micro-transactions! Superbly replayable. Once you get the hang of it, you will be hooked. While the mechanics remain the same, each game really does feel like a totally new and different experience. Just a great, great, really well put together game.

Glitch. Please fix the glitch that makes it so that I can’t leave the app during a game (even to answer a phone call) without the game freezing and losing my process. This is irritating because I usually only lose progress during my really good runs, as they go longer and have more of a chance of being interrupted.
