Landscape mode please and…. So far I like it a lot but it shouldn’t say for ipad until they provide landscape mode. Typing with my attached keyboard is not practical on ipad with this app. I might need to go to a chiropractor after keeping my head bent at a right angle to read sideways😆 Also, I love that European Portuguese is included in some of the translation features, but why just some? Why not all? Apple and google translators both don’t offer any European Portuguese, so I’m thrilled to have it at all on this app, but would love it if it was available to download off-line.

Quality app should charge for it.. I use it to find characters left out of the 2nd addition Collins while translating the other…. Well I will keep that to my self… though it all started with a Websters for 7 dollars ever English speaking person should buy and start at “letter” the problem with the binding in the 2 simpler books is an issue I may need to buy them twice. This app can do much more than the two books. But I enjoy the ancient characters considering the keyboard can distinguish them better. The knew characters are PC but the old characters are better at guiding. This program recognizes both and uses a slightly different font to help recognition of characters one may find on on the street as a business owners personal touch. One time I was looking up characters in mandarin to see how it was said they surprised me with a addition to it that only a teacher would say. The attributes of one’s hand weighting may account for the inability to compute a translation for my personal righting but the “cost accountant” probably said hold on that.

The service is good but this app needs work. Edit: this app has got better and worse. The problems with dark mode have been fixed. However, the big issue now is that this service has become very unreliable. The conversation is regularly ended prematurely by the server. To be clear, the app is not crashing, my browser (on which I also join) is not crashing. The meeting is being ended at the server side. It has got much worse over the last 6 months. In today's 2 hour meeting it ended the meeting 4 times. Each time I had to start a new session. I use Microsoft Translator on my desktop regularly and it’s great. However, this app has a few flaws. Firstly, with my iPad in dark mode it is extremely hard to see the text I type. Next, the app has not been written to function side-by-side with another app on an iPad. That feature was introduced years ago. Finally, and most significantly, if you temporarily toggle into another app this app closes the conversation and you lose everything. I’m on an M1-powered iPad Pro. This is a supercomputer. This app shouldn’t have any memory problems on such a device, it should be able to stay open and in the conversation in the background while I toggle to another app.

My lifesaver. I should have known earlier that this translator had Cantonese because searching for a working Cantonese translator online with pronunciations is certainly very difficult to do, mainly because Cantonese is not spoken very much. Being a millennial, learning Cantonese is difficult, mainly because where I live in the US, no one teaches it and Mandarin is usually preferred and Google translate had Cantonese input, which for me is somewhat surprising, but there wasn't a reverse function so I couldn't type in English to them hear the spoken words. Now that I have this, I can reduce the language barrier between my relatives who only speak Cantonese.

Really great!. I love this translator. It’s super helpful on school assignments if I don’t understand a word or phrase and as someone who’s learning multiple languages at once it’s really helpful. I can use the split microphone tool to practice with my family because I can ask a question in a language I’m learning and it will translate to English for them. Then I can respond in my target language. The camera tool is helpful for restaurants and I love the phrase book. My only complaint is that in some more complex languages such as Korean it will only translate from English to Korean in honorifics. However from Korean to English it works just fine without honorifics. Otherwise I love this app and use it all the time!

Useless now. I use to be able quickly open this app, type something in English, hit the share button, and it would send the translation to a message or I could copy it. Now you need a PhD in UX and have to click multiple times to do the same thing, and it doesn’t even support the most basic use that most people use this for. Use another app until they bring back what actually worked. Oh and I’ve lost count how many times you click the little keyboard icon where the Enter button should be that actually closes the input and you lose everything you just wrote. They butchered such a great app in the big update I will never use this garbage again.

Used to love this. I really liked this translator and used it all the time. It was easy to use and fairly accurate. But… The most recent version had BIG changes which now it is much more difficult to use and has caused me a lot of frustration. Particularly the speech recognition part…the prior version required you to chose what language you were speaking, so it “knew” which language to detect. Now, it has auto recognition which doesn’t seem to work well. It used to recognize what I was saying in my non-native language, but it does not do well with it now. This “improvement” is not an improvement and I will have to find a different app for my needs now. I’m very diss appointed.

Trash New update and UX is harder to use than previous version. I thoroughly dislike this new update they made 9 months ago. The app is actually harder to use and less seamless than it was before. The app no longer translates as you type and If you accidentally mistype a word or sentence, you have to rewrite the entire thing over again! Switching between languages is actually more difficult and it no longer gives you similar words/ multiple translations for the same word. Some default translations provided aren’t what is used in conversations, so the feature that showed multiple ways of saying a word was actually really useful. You also can’t change the reading speed for translated text anymore. These were not issues in the previous version. How can you call it a new and improved version when it’s more trash than the last?? I used to love this app but it’s gone completely downhill. They just removed all the features that made it awesome to use. I’m extremely disappointed and am deleting it. Would not recommend this app anymore.

Just what I have been searching for. Just downloaded this app. I have been playing with it all afternoon. We are planing a trip to Japan in the fall. I have been thinking of purchasing one of those hand held voice translators. I have been reading reviews and looking at all manor of voice translators for months. Hand held and earbud translators range anywhere from $100 to as much as $400+. Well.....this app seems to have everything I have been looking for in a voice translator. All in an app on my iPhone 8. An additional plus is I wont have to carry my phone AND a separate voice translators. And the basic is FREE! I gave 4 stars because I haven’t had a chance you use this application while traveling. I have a feeling it will rate the five stars plus!

Nice tool for translating.. Nice tool for translating thoughts in real time. Handy for business and social use. Quite handy for me in communicating with non-English speakers in so many languages - all I do is pick the language, and viola! My criticism was that it didn’t take easily to allowing insert of a correction into a sentence already typed. Looks like they have improved the algorithm to fix that annoyance. However, it does not allow formatting for a paragraph, or maybe it’s me who just never figured that out yet. All things considered, it’s a great app.

Perfect as browser plug-in. I use this app primarily as an ‘extension’ to Safari. While iOS 14+ has native translation for certain languages, the list is short, and I’d often like to translate Polish web pages. Without this app, Safari can’t translate Polish, and to use Google would be cumbersome as only the desktop version translates entire pages. With Microsoft Translator, I can share the page in Safari, and Translator is one of the available actions. All the translation is done on-page within Safari and is quite accurate. The U.I. for the app itself could use some improvement, but I rarely use it. Great work by MS.

Still broken UX for translating images. Not sure why they don’t fix this. It’s been over a year and I’ve reported this bug several times. Repro: take screenshot > tap on preview image (iPhone X) > share > Microsoft translator > hangs trying to translate. Since it hangs, there’s an option to tap to open the app, but if you do, it takes you to the camera mode! You still have to tap on images > choose album > look for image > select > translate. This is the worst UX for translating an image. Why not just open to translate? Why not swipe sideways to toggle through photo album? Why the hang when taping the share to ms translator? Why? Why? Why???? Are there any product designers actually working in this team? This is unacceptable. Great technology, but lousy execution and UX. No dedication or love from the product builders.

The Imploding App!!!’. This was my go to translator app, I raved about it, but I just received an update yesterday and it is absolute crap now. It’s not even the same app, everything is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! It’s not as easy to use now and I can’t copy and paste the translation like I used to. I used to be able to communicate with my friends by copying translated messages and texting them, amazing, but apparently that was too convenient and made way too much sense, so Microsoft, as usual, had to change everything and ruin a great piece of software, and why? Didn’t it take you guys a lot of time and money to build the previous version m? Anyway translations can no longer be copy/pasted now. Too add to the devastation the app used to have a split screen that you could just talk into your phone and it would translate it facing the other person, amazing idea, the best I’d ever seen, but Microsoft being Microsoft, had to change that too. Why?!?! I’m just glad I don’t drive a Microsoft car or the steering wheel would probably change from side to side annually. Just when you learn to use the software they change it. I don’t even know what this company is thinking anymore, not much, apparently. Honestly I think they just F stuff up to look busy and keep their jobs. I’m downloading my new translator app right now. Don’t even bother with this one. It’s a shadow of its former glory.

The absolute best.. This translator is better then any of the other apps. It is free with NO ADS. And it is fast and smooth. I needed a good translation app, I had tried many or the paid or subscription based apps and they are garbage compared to this. I’m very happy with this app and Microsoft is definitely leading the way in real time translation. I’m so glad I gave this app a try. I wasn’t expecting it to be the best of them all. It’s so far ahead all of the others it makes me wonder how they are even on the App Store.

Better than Google Translator. I moved to Switzerland and I used to use google translator for everything since it had image translation feature that came very handy when in restaurants, or in streets. However, after using Microsoft translator, I never went back to Google app. First off, MS translator does much better job of pronouncing the words or a phrase by slowing it down for each retry. Secondly, when translating through image capture, it puts the words in the original image. Google and other translators bunch them all up in an unformatted paragraph which make it unclear where a sentence ends or starts. Very nice work by MS. The only improvement I would recommend is to have the landscape feature work. Currently, everything must be in portrait.

Works Well Mostly But…. I’ve been trying this app out by using it to translate Vietnamese, a language that I know well, to see its vocabulary and expression fluency. It works very good mostly, but I noticed that it censors the word “dog” in Vietnamese! Why???? Sure it can be used as a profanity but that certainly depends on context. “Chó” in general is a very common word which literally means “dog”, there’s no other words that can replace it. I don’t know if there are other bugs like that in other languages, which makes me kind of distrust the app. Also, please make it easier to delete previous translations. It should be as simple as a side swipe instead of having to click on it then click delete all the time, which is rather user unfriendly. Other than that, I love the way the translations pronounced. Much less robotic than google translate.

Froze when speaking out other participants’ output. Hi there. I am Deaf and uses this for my chats with colleagues at work. My co-worker have the app installed and I have it installed on my iPad. Two problems that you need to note: 1) Fix the rotation issue so I can read it easily on the iPad. It wouldn’t rotate AT ALL. 2) My co-worker turned on “auto-play messages” so her iPhone will read out loud when I send a message. She also have the “Presentator mode” turned on as well — so she don’t have to press and hold the microphone button. It sure did read out loud pretty good, but the problem is that her app’s microphone froze for maybe 1 to 2 minutes unless I trigger an action like open keyboard and then close keyboard and then click on the Microphone again. It became a bit annoying and would be perfect if these issues are fixed! Thank you!

Was five stars - what happened?. It’s less than a week since the new interface has rolled out and all I can ask is: why change something that was so good? A large number of features seem to be lost (like manually editing a dictated phrase that has been incorrectly transcribed or you wish simply to adapt); intuitive use has gone out the window; every translation is kept in a screen-hogging permanent scroll whether you want them or not Update on this point - and thanks for developer feedback on this - you can delete them by switching the specific entry to full-screen mode but why not simply apply the near-standard “swipe left” to delete an entry? Innovation means doing something different and useful. The developers seem to have forgotten the second part of this.

Updated interface UNUSABLE. The one thing bing translator had over google for me was Cantonese! It is so hard for us Cantonese speakers to find our language on the apps and bing was a godsend. Until they completed changed the interface and now it is so hard and unintuitive to use. So hard to simply paste the phrase I need translated or change the language inputs. Sometimes when I finally do figure it out, it won’t even translate. Please just revert back to what it was. What is this? I’m just trying to relearn my own language so I can talk to my family. Stop playing with stuff like this and just be efficient.

HATE the update. This was my favorite app for translating. I prefer it to Google translate! However I absolutely hate this update. And will be switching back to Google. It may look more aesthetically pleasing, but it is far less practical. It does not translate as I type anymore. Now I have to hit “go” to see the translation. And it does not permit editing after that. I need to retype everything because I’m not able to edit the text I already translated. Moreover, when I hit “copy” it copies both the original language and the language it was translated into. That is an annoying feature. All I need is the translated phrase.

This is pretty darned cool!. Easy to use, nice features and interface touches, lots of fun! Full disclosure: I’ve only been playing with the app for a little while, I’ve not yet tested it “in the wild,” and I’ve thus far only used English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. That said, the translations I’ve seen so far seem reasonably accurate, and the ways that the app presents spoken, printed, and phonetic results are very useful. To be sure, language in general can be subjective and analog, especially around edge cases, so YMMV, but this app seems pretty darned nice. Well done!

The best. I use this app almost daily, while I have been around Spanish speakers for my entire adult life and even taken several Spanish classes, I often just don’t understand or have difficulty expressing myself. Having a translator app on my phone really removes hurdles in daily life. I have tried the comparable app from Google and for English/Spanish Microsoft has done a vastly superior job handling linguistic idioms. To often other translators provide a literal word for word translation that is difficult and sometimes doesn’t convey the original intent. The chat function is great to collaborate with multiple people too.

A big improvement over the old. The app has been completely overhauled. It did take me a few weeks to get used to the new format, but on the whole I think it is more intuitive and easier to use. Someone coming into the app with fresh eyes unused to the old product probably wouldn’t have any problems. For Mandarin translations, I’m still frustrated by the lack of Pinyin transliterations alongside the Hanzi characters. The Pinyin is only showed if translating from Chinese (Simplified) to Chinese (Traditional) or vice versa - never to English or other languages. The Pinyin should always be shown! Such an easy thing to include and so helpful for Latin alphabet users; the oversight is confounding. Here’s hoping this feedback is considered for a later update. Thanks

The best I have found for a large group conversation. I have been using this app for a number of years and it always did an adequate job of bi-directional translation to help me as I learned Spanish. About a month ago I discovered the Group Conversation functionality and it has been a complete game-changer. I teach ESL classes to a diverse audience with five languages present and it initially did not look like it would be possible to have a multi-language class. The Group Conversation allows everyone to hear in their original language as they learn new material and then we can all practice in English. I have been able to use it in four class sessions so far and after working out some initial kinks, it works great. The only thing I would ask for from Microsoft at this point is better written installation and set up procedures. Initial setup with a large class is cumbersome but I am not going to rate this lower than five-stars for that piece. The functionality rocks. Well done. Update: One feature that has been changed in the new version is the removal of the two buttons in conversation mode, one for each language. It is now only auto-detect. This has not worked as well as having two buttons when it comes to accuracy. I prefer the option for either method, like it used to be.

Why?!!!. The previous version was leaps and bounds more functional than this “beta-feeling” update. The now missing Safari extension and 280 character copy limit makes the update useless when trying to read translated pages. Not sure what the objective of this update was, but sadly it went in the wrong direction of progress. I wish I knew ahead of time not to complete the update. Assuming we won’t be getting the prior version’s functionality back, I’m now forced to just bookmark the Google Translate site and copy/paste the URL there for a full page translation as an alternative since Apple’s native extension is still rather limited in available languages.

Absolutely beautiful for this magic app. I got this app for Spanish and this is just amazing. It is amazing to use for translating and finding words. It is super convenient! 👍It can even preform amazing tasks such as filling coffee for me in the morning and feeding my dog. I don’t even have to go to my job anymore, this app does it for me! I don’t even have to visit my family anymore because this app can even make me invisible to the outside world. This app is great, as far as my family knows I’m dead. I recommend this app for sure but there is one thing holding me back from 5 stars. When switching languages the the one translating doesn’t switch automatically and you have to do it manually.

Update is awful and takes away core functionality in an attempt to focus on “AI”. Basic design is taken away from this update. It took me 5 minutes to figure out how to “enter” and actually translate from typing from english to another language (Cantonese). It’s pressing the return button twice apparently. The first time it just added a new line?! My whole reason for using this app instead of Google Translate is because it supports Cantonese and used to make it easy to copy and paste the translation so I can quickly text my parents back but now I can’t even do that. Long pressing on the phrase does nothing and all I can do is add it to favorites??? Super poor design and organization choices overcomplicated what used to be a super helpful and easy to load / use app on the go. Pls fix!!

Continuous: good! Else: Bad. I really like the new ability to tap the microphone and have it continuously translate, without it shutting off the microphone every time the speaker pauses. That said, the split screen option should also still be available, as it is not practical to explain to someone speaking a different language that they should download the app and initiate conversation mode on their own phone. It’s a good feature, but should be optional, not mandatory! Also, please add back in the ability to delete all history at once. I do not wish to individually delete hundreds of translated messages. [UPDATE: Devs say this will be added back in] Also, there should be a way to do one-way translations. Sometimes the app incorrectly hears Japanese language as English, and tries to translate it into Japanese!

Fast image translation feature does not work stable. As the title suggests, sometimes the translation feature on the image via the shortcut key siri will fail to connect to the internet. Although tried again on 4G and WiFi but it did not work (but quick translation still works). When encountering this situation, there is no other way but to delete the application and reinstall, now quickly translating on the image will work again. however, some time later it will fail again, for unknown reasons

I am disappointed with the upgrade.. NEWS FLASH : I came back to see if they fixed the upgrade abomination. No they have not. So I use Chat GPT and it works. I can’t believe MS wrecked such a good app. I used app everyday multiple times per day to translate English into Chinese and I could write long involved Chinese paragraphs which I would check in Pleco and then revise etc. Even native Chinese told me it was very good. Then with the upgrade it is useless. I can’t write paragraphs or correct them. Back and forth between apps. It is just a total failure for me. It was the best. So unless I can find out how to get back to the good app then I will have to find something else. Very disappointed.

The update killed it. Once again Microsoft can’t leave a good thing alone. The most recent update took away all the best features, like being able to copy/paste and especially, especially the split screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTH?!? I also noticed the font size on the translations, especially for language like Hindi or Korean, is smaller makes the translation very hard to users to read. I depended on this app when traveling through Italy, India, and Greece and have used it religiously for years now. It took away all the stress of being stranded in areas where little English was spoken. I needed it when I found myself in the emergency room in Croatia, and had no one to help me explain my problem and fill out the paperwork. I would have been lost without it. The split screen is so helpful when shopping or even renting a car. I’m sick to have to delete it and hopefully find something similar. Didn’t you all do any user research before you updated???

Do not like the new update!!!!. Before the update I could run meetings smoothly and speak to my English language learner students easily. Now my students cannot just communicate with me quickly 😡. I get frustrated because it won’t just say what you say back you have to press buttons and it takes time to process before it repeats. Then you have to switch languages before the other person can speak. I work with k-5 students they don’t have a phone to connect with mine! I get where it is going and why it was done but I wish it was an add on and not a complete change. I got a lot of Gen Ed teachers and office admin on this app to help them with students and their parents now we are all disappointed. Too many steps 🤯

The One that works!!. I have a need to translate many languages since my students could come from any country on any given year. I also love to travel in the summer. I have found that this app has the widest variety of languages and is the most accurate. Other apps often give the message “Czeck (for example) is not in our language base.” I do not find that with this product. It has a huge range of choices. I can also split the screen and have immediate conversations with my students. It is fantastic!

New Update Actually Pretty Good. When i first submitted this review it was a 1-star rating and i said some neg. things, but after using it for a few days, i came to realize it's actually much better than i initially expected, so i've updated to 4-stars. It's probably 5-stars but i have to give it a few more days of a full workout to prove to myself it meets all my translator needs. Oh, and i am discovering that i much prefer not to have the translate-as-you-type feature, which the older version had and i often found it annoying. Thank you Microsoft, sorry for jumping the gun with my first and wildly inaccurate review.

Camera feature doesn’t work anymore. This was my go to translator app because I was able to take a picture and have it translated for me. But recently it stopped working. I always translated Spanish to English because my husband’s family all speak Spanish because they’re from Ecuador. It was a great way for me to translate messages. But now when I click on Spanish to English and take a picture it goes back to English translating English which obviously does me no good. I’ve uninstalled it and reinstalled it I even tried to put Spanish to Spanish just to see what it would do and it goes back to English. So they get one star for me until they fix the camera because that’s the only way I can use the translator

Issues with Some Languages, and Multiple Missing. Whenever I translate to and from Hebrew (true example), the punctuation gets completely messed up. Oftentimes I’ll hit the double arrows button to translate the results back to English to check. Whenever this happens (and this issue has improved some over time with updates), if there was a period at the end, one magically appears at the beginning as well, and so on with question marks, exclamation points, etc. (though not with commas). Also, several words in both Hebrew and other languages aren’t recognized and make radical transformations, including both common and proper nouns. In one incident, I repeatedly tried to translate a sentence containing “Galilee” (a region in northern Israel), and when I checked, “Galilee” had become “the cylinder!” I tried over and over with the same results. These were not the only times there was a glitch in the system, leading me to distrust Microsoft Translator with languages other than the Romance Languages (Spanish, French, etc.), with which I encountered much less error.

Best language converter, with typical inaccuracies. This is definitely the best language translator app in the store, and it’s free! The second best is iTranslate, but it’s expensive and though it has good features, it’s more wrong than this one, despite iTranslate using the same starting point. Either way, get this app and try it, the best feature bout it is the image scan that translates your documents or signs or whatever. It does a really good job and that’s where you can see the big company of Microsoft’s involvement because their AI is so good. :)

Probably not the fairest review.... I just got this ten minutes ago, but I want to say how good it is. I also got another translator where most features are paid for by subscription (which I probably won’t do because I don’t travel), but this Microsoft app is totally free and no ads or in app purchases, including the camera scan option!! I can’t say much else because I just got it, but from what I’ve seen, it’s terrific. And I previously had another app that also had limited translations and so on... The thing I find annoying (and yet I understand) is the Monthly part of subscriptions. I’m fine to pay just once like seven dollars or whatever, but the fact that it costs monthly (even when you don’t use it and its hard to unsubscribe) is what makes me avoid it. At the same time I get it, they got to make money to improve translation. I would if I used it more... but this one is fine because its free and Microsoft can and does afford it. If they can’t you could switch to Google but I don’t like it as much...

Laughably terrible app. This app is an abomination and an afront to modern language. I needed this app to translate some Russian and Ukrainian language books I'm selling online. I get it. Cyrillic alphabet is difficult to translate and hence why I downloaded this app, thinking it would help me facilitate that translation. Turns out I was just deluding myself. It flat out couldn't translate the Russian and Ukrainian text. So I tried to translate a German book. The app thought I was trying to translate French to English. French and German? Two very different languages. Okay, then I tried something very. Spanish. It can do Spanish right? Nope. The app thought I was trying to translate Italian to English. Seriously? At this point, I think Microsoft is playing a prank on me by releasing this laughably terrible app. I'll stick to Google Translate. It got the jobs I need done and with zero frustration.

Update added bug, they fixed it in days.. The copy function was re-added after my previous review, within 48 hours. The only thing I can say now is it would be nice to have a setting to copy only the translated text as opposed to both, and to remove the text starting which language it is. I use this app for messaging friends, and find myself having to remove “Portuguese (Brazil)” from each message.

Share shortcut doesn’t work, and photo translation needs Romaji option. The whole reason I tried this app was to have the “share to translate” function that Google translate didn’t have, but it doesn’t work at all. It always says that I’m not connected to the internet, and the translation options aren’t even visible when you tap on the language spots (it’s just a blank screen that comes up, and if you select done, it goes to auto-detect and Spanish. I only have Japanese downloaded for offline use, and Spanish is still the only blind selection that comes up even on airplane mode). Additionally, there needs to be a way of checking the readings for the kanji for trying to learn the language, on the image itself. When I bring an image into the app itself to actually make the translation work, there’s no way to have the overlay show Romaji instead of the nonsense translation it puts over the text.

The Korean wouldn’t work on picture translations.... The picture translations from Korean to English weren’t working. I tried to translate parts of: a website, general web pages, and a book from Korean to English. However they just wouldn’t translate, most of the text was incomprehensible. Some parts were even showing strange things like 0’s in place of translations. The text to speech however worked great. It provided me with sources whenever I would copy and past the text onto the internet. I’m not really sure why it wouldn’t work on the picture translation function though. This was especially strange since the Spanish to English option worked just fine with this function. Please fix the picture translations from Korean to English. If it weren’t for this I would have rated this app much higher.

So, so grateful!!. We just met our new friends today, an Afghan refugee family. They speak Dari and we were using another translation app with Persian because that’s as close to Dari as we thought we were going to get. After a few frustrating moments where that just wasn’t cutting it, I came home tonight thinking there HAD to be a way to translate English to true Dari. A quick google search led me here and we are already communicating in a whole new, much more clear way. THANK YOU!!! The gift of communication is no small thing!!

Was decent till update. This was a decent app, the dialect wasn’t great it was translating more of a European style Spanish into South American Spanish which made the wording a little confusing but it still was good enough to understand what I was trying to say. Now with the new user interface there are less options it’s very confusing because it won’t automatically play what you said you literally have to stop the Translator and hit the play button for it to actually play what you saidWhich is a major problem when for example you’re driving and your hands have to be on the steering wheel not pressing buttons on the phone. Bring back the old one until you get the new one properly tested and vetted, this is just a shame that you’re trying to stick and untested alpha on people guess I’ll just go and find another app.

New format. I hate saying this as I used to love this translator. But I recommend Google translate. Also the person that reads and responds to these messages doesn’t read the messages or doesn’t understand my issue with the application. I’m deleting the app from my phone. The new format of the app is very frustrating. Specifically when copying text, it pastes in both languages. So if you are using it for text messages, you have to delete one entire translation as well as the name of the language that you are translating. Please fix this or I will just move to another application. Despite the fact that your app has a better translation of the language that I’m learning and using. Thanks

Don't rely on Mandarin Phrasebook. I downloaded this app because I’m learning Cantonese and it's one of the few translators that support it. I’m really happy to see Microsoft recognizing Canto and making resources available for learners. That being said, I went through the mandarin phrase book out of curiosity, and there are many, MANY errors. For those familiar, it literally tells people to say “I don’t speak Chinese simplified,” which refers to a writing system not a spoken language. It goes on to suggest asking for a phone number by saying “how MUCH is your phone number” (你的电话号码是多少). There are also cases where the pinyin romanization does not match the characters above. Most of these errors wouldn’t make it impossible to be understood, but you’d definitely get laughed at. 1 star because although the translator seems fine, the phrase book is unexpectedly terrible and anyone who would actually need/use it would never be the wiser.

Latest version designed to be “not used”. I’ve used MSFT translator for at least 5 years and while not perfect, it offered simplicity and reliably with intuitive bidirectional translation from text and very simple translation of text in photos. Since updating from v22 to v23, I’ve quickly learned just how bad an APP. can be, and how important a method to get an older version back onto my iPhone truly is.. This latest version, v23, is user hostile, unintuitive, and completely undoes all the positive feelings I had for MSFT Translator. I have failed to translate typed text, test from photos, copy from a translation, and copy translated text from a photo.. the APP is now completely non-functional for me…but maybe I’m just … brain dead! Give us back the V22 UI … please !

Downgrade in typing interface. The UI is much more cumbersome for typed translations now. I can’t find an easy direction change button, which is one of the most critical features when traveling. I read words in a foreign language and want to look them up. Later, I want to say something and look up the word in my native language. Ideally, I’d like to be able to easily toggle directions, even if text was already entered… for example, it’s set English to Spanish, but I accidentally type a Spanish phrase. I’d like to be able to reverse directions with one button and not have to retype the phrase.

Glitchy but good. For a minute the safari plugin was working fine. Then, they updated a month or so ago and the plugin is dead weight now. Also, the keyboard collapses when switching between languages in the type menu. This is really annoying. Editing type is practically impossible in the middle of the body. The first keystroke will place at the cursor but every consecutive keystroke is moved to the end of the text body. All in all, most of the translations are fairly accurate. As well, this is the only translator I could find to do Cantonese really well.

Update ruined the app. The latest update ruined the app. This was my go to app for conversing with my students that do not speak English. I would pull up the app start speaking into it and it would translate and automatically translate and play the translation aloud. Now it will translate but I have to click on a button to get the translation to play aloud and half the time it won’t play after I hit the button. I work with elementary school children that may not be able to read so the play back is the feature I need and when it doesn’t always work it makes the app useless. Will be finding a new translation app. No idea why they would think this update would be an upgrade.

Complete rubbish. Don't bother still doesn't work offline, even if you downloaded the language pack it still won't work. Complains that you need to download the language pack. Way too difficult to use! Forget it

Microsoft Translate. Really handy. Reliable and from what the locals in Asia and Europe tell me, it’s pretty accurate too.

Good , but failed to improved over time. Areas have needed improving for a long time. Needs ; romaji displayed alongside the kanji (Japanese). Dictionary lookup /meanings for words. Live translation of pictures.

Could Improve. I wish there was a pinyin option for Chinese and for some reason the app cannot translate traditional Chinese to simplified Chinese even though I can select that as an option.

Very Helpful. It’s been very helpful translating websites on my phone. Obviously the translations aren’t perfect but they are understandable. Thank you.

Excellent tool. It is an excellent tool for polishing up one’s third or fouthforeign language. Many thanks.

New layout is terrible. New layout isn't user friendly and the previous layout was more accurate and intuitive to use when translating, so I will find a different app to use

Outstanding app!. This already has so many amazing features - can’t wait to see how much the technology progresses!

A terrible update. This was once the best translation app available. It’s now slow and lost features making it practically unusable. Please add the legacy app back to the App Store or restore this one to the previous version. Did the people who made this app even use the previous version or use translation apps regularly?? I can’t imagine the intention of the update was to alienate existing users and push them away to try other apps - that’s what it did for me.

Perfect. Simply perfect and far ahead than any other translator application

New update. Found the new format confusing, with an extra screen that is not needed popping up when I tried to copy the Chinese characters I can no long copy the Chinese and paste into other Chinese apps to do shopping etc very disappointing as this is essential

Getting ahead of Google. A very good app with quick and accurate translation, a welcome update on the way the auto translation is displayed would be the ability to adjust or move the middle line dividing the two texts, often not all text is displayed because of the line division.

Wow! Just wow.. I love translator because it helps me learn other languages such as French so I can get high marks. It is also fun to get on a chat with my sister and go to different rooms of the house and text each other

Translate. The Kurdish sorani language when try to search for a work it doesn’t translate it for you looks like short of many many words hope you guys improve that part, for Example when put in a English word expect to give translate in Kurdish Sorani,it only gives you what that word sound like in Kurdish not interpretation,,otherwise it’s a grate App Thank you

Originally brilliant app on WP. Not many people will know but in Windows Phone 8.1, the Microsoft translator app was absolutely the best. Instant camera translations (no photo needs to be taken/button pressrd) it simply worked seamlessly and better than anything out there . The entire app ran quicker as well on a much much weaker hardware. Offline mode was perfect as well (side note offline maps were great too on WP 8.1). Of course Microsoft app isn’t designed to work best on iPhone, but just saying that most people wouldn’t know how good that app was on WP 8.1

Not missing struggle. Makes a complicated language barrier uncomplicated

Sub optimal user experience. I want to like it but there are some poor aspects of using, eg switching your 2 languages and which one you're inputting.

Disappointment!. We have been using the previous upgrade of the app, and it was so easy to communicate with. The new upgrade doesn’t allow to cut n paste to other media, and create a longer conversation. Sometimes you shouldn’t fix what wasn’t broken Still a good app…but coming back to the pack!

Latest update has ruined a once good translator. The latest update to ver 23.2.1 has ruined a once good translator. Can no longer copy text and interface is very cumbersome. Roll back to previous version would be so much better

Convos. Finally we can communicate with some ease

Review. This makes conversation in other languages easy.

Clear History. The update has removed the Clear History feature. Now you have to delete each line one by one. Very tiresome. A simple Clear All History would be helpful

Best translation app. I’ve tried them all!! It’s almost instantaneously, does “rude words, I.e. Adult questions. “Would you like to make love to me “? No problems. The pronunciation is spot on and it understands even not perfectly pronounced language.

Translator. I have use all parts from talking to taking a photo and has worked 90% of the time.

Thanks for adding Khmer.. A fine improvement for Cambodian users.

Just amazing. Well done this is the first light app I’ve tried very happy😄😄😄😄

Translation. Hi. There. The translation is not quite correct. Hope it can be done well.

Ok. I got this app so I could translate mainly pictures but the writing is to big and clumped together so you can’t actually read it but other than that the actual translation is good

Removed ability to save translation outside of the app. Unfortunately this version has removed the ability to share/save the translation into own locations. Only saved within app. Pity. That was what I liked most about the app.

Pretty good but can’t handle long sentences. I like this much better than google translate as it’s dictation allows for good sized sentences without cutting out like competitors. I’m told the English to French translations are particularly accurate.

Waiting for perfection. Learning a second language? Must have this one. Speech recognition in the 2nd language - whoa - perfect the pronunciation! A great app but then there are so many things that would improve the experience. An example, the keyboard and microphone could open in the language appropriate to the field; instead of needing to reset language each time user swaps between fields. Better still, swiping between functions instead of returning to the menu every time! No, actually the first one would be a better fix - do that one first. Oh, and the app is free. Don’t change that. Thank you whoever you are out there. Wonderful.

Mr akeel. I been using it for awhile and I can’t imagine doing anything without

Missing language. What happened to Cebuano in the list of languages?

Revamp review. I find the app hard to operate since the update. I liked the previous set up a lot better. It was a lot easier to navigate and understand

Terrible translation to Japanese. I Compared this to google lens, This had EVERY word wrong. Completely jumbled in different orders. Absolutely no punctuation wouldn’t recommend this app to anyone. Use google instead.

New app looks great but missing old features. Love the look of the new app. But now seems I can’t copy the translation to use in other apps. Had to find a replacement to use till this feature fixed.

Most accurate. Most accurate of all translation apps. Great interface as well.

Word for word?. The translations of single words are to single words without options, so that the option offered can be contextually mistaken. I’m not sure how this could be handled. A mere list of options could be uninformative. Maybe advice that a single word, especially with regard to accenting (for example “pêche” or “pêcher” - that’s just what came up with autocorrection), is especially ambiguous and might be better sought by asking for a phrase. Anyway: felicitations! Iain

Pinyin is gone. Not sure what happened but since the last update when translating into Chinese it no longer also gives the pinyin as well as the characters so I can no pronounce anything anymore

Easy to use. I have used other translators but this is quick and easy...

Issue with writing Chinese characters. I’ve been using this for a long time and have found it very useful until recently when I discovered I couldn’t write Chinese characters at all as every stroke I made on the screen just disappeared so I couldn’t form any words! Trying to translate Chinese to English.. what gives?!

James Duncan. I have just returned from a visit to Paris to my Son-in-Laws Mother. We used the App constantly. Yes, one would say you are lazy learn the language. Correct, but it was much much better for her to understand my talk than not.

Ruined UI. Bitterly disappointing when an app that used to work so well gets the dreaded update and becomes incomprehensible and a pain to use. Just like you have made excel much slower to use through introducing new ways in which to do simple things in a much slower manner. Could the next update please uninstall this version and reinstall the old version? App deleted and switching to a competitor

Multiple Deletes. Great app but hard to use as it badly needs a multiple delete (or a Delete All) function. It is very laborious and time consuming to have to individually delete each translated sentence or word.

Thai Translation. Really a difficult language to translate from or to. Because of the context of the structural conversational meanings and the semantics of Thai phrases things are often incorrectly interpreted. Anticipating with more use of ML, AI and Deep NMT for future translations I hope translations will be more accurate.

New updated version a backward step. The previous version was fantastic, better UX plus option to vary speed of audio of translated. This new version is just horrible No speed control option as was available in the last version makes this a BACKWARD update

New ruined UI. The latest ‘update’ has indeed completely revamped the user interface, and made it an incomprehensible jumble. The menus and functionalities are bewildering and opaque. Congratulations MS, just like you did to MS Word and Excel, you wrecked your app with ‘improvements’. I’ll be deleting this app.

Translator app. I find this translator app easy to understand and use, it has got me out of a lot trouble in my where about’s! Definitely recommend

Getting ahead of Gxxxxxx. This is true after your are using it. Likes it . Love it. Reuses again and again Microsoft Translate. Thanks to Microsoft Teams working hard. Make our life more Convenient.

Latest Update is a mess. What was a fabulous app is ruined by this recent update. Shameful Apple. The previous User Interface also provided alternate translations based on whether it is a verb, adverb, noun, adjective etc and colloquial factors. It was purely brilliant - this latest version is a pale imitation. Please make the alternate translation facility available again. If not I’ll seriously consider using another app. Furthermore, the star ratings are only out of four not five because you can’t give a zero star rating and must give at least one star - so everyone gets one!

Don't like the new version. The new version is too difficult to use, there are so many bugs, can I use the old version back?

Useful app but some issues. I love the app especially since it has more niche audio options like Cantonese. But as of the last update, the app now talks like a chipmunk for Some reason....

Updated to garbage. I used this app exclusively when I lived in China because I had no access to Google. I recently deleted it because with its new quote improvements“ it has become virtually unuseable. It’s frequently either dumps all of the written work to translate or translate it back into the same language then I typed it in. Not very effective

New update. Have been using it for more than 3 years, the new update is so complicated and useless. Now delete it

Translations are way too fast.. When listening to the translation, it’s way too fast and no option to slow it down.

Doesn’t translate websites. Used to be a really good app on a phone. It would be useful at translating websites. Now there is no option for it. Go back to your old platform. There is a need to be able to translate in many dimensions.

The app is it still working?. It won’t let me translate at all.

Love this app. Easy to use, great language selection. PLEASE add Persian speech support. As an educator we could really use this to support newcomers to North America.

I like Microsoft translator. I like Microsoft translator because I can translate the word or speech I need to translate in any language I can also write a letter in any language to my grandma or anyone it is amazing I really like it.

True companion in my travels. Amazingly useful app especially when used as shared from other apps in emergency situations conversing with non-English people.

Microsoft ruined the app. As of the new update in April 2023 the offline use feature was removed rendering the app useless without access to the internet. Current rating: 0 out of 5 stars Previous rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Doesn't copy text. I've been reading the previous reviews and it's true. You can't copy text with this app. Double tapping the word doesn't do anything. You have to press and hold, wait for the native copy, prompt. Then you must manually swipe to make the selection, then select copy. Horrible interface here which shows lack of thought for the end-user. Microsoft MUST implement a copy button like the leading search engine provider and pretty much everyone else who have a dedicated button to copy text for translation apps for iOS. 👎👎

Why the awful update?. This was a perfect app, why did you ruin it??

The best. This is far the best free app ever. I speak five languages, but sometimes I struggle with expressions or sayings, and this app does the job. I strongly recommend this software.

no Esperanto?. You have Klingon, which is awesome, but not Esperanto, the international language?

When will you update this thing?. It seems like you're doing absolutely nothing to make the experience of this app better. Why is it that I can use this app in landscape mode? Why can't I split screen? Why aren't transliteration for languages with different scripts (like Chinese) directly below the translation which having to swipe over like an idiot? And why do they take so long to show up?

Very Helpful. I’ve only started using this app recently. I find it very helpful. Although a little clumsy to use - primarily because there is little information on how to navigate within the app. One improvement I would request is the ability to slow down the voice playback. Sometimes it is difficult to make out all the syllables in the words as they are spoken.

New update. New update is trash. Super nice to have a section to see basics and greeting etc so cool, but having to delete every translation & the format compared to before sucks. Also when switching between 2 languages (ex Eng to German then wanting to keep the text just switch around German to Eng) & having to retire is annoying This app is so close to being the best one but not quite, not quite.

Need to add more languages. Can you add Punjabi language pls?

Cannot change a translation language. I use different languages regularly. Now I have to start a new translation every single time I want to change a language. The old version was way better and easier, less hassle if you want to know an English word in multiple languages. Change it back please.

new update. Do not like the new update

Chinese input method issue. When inputing Chinese words, it will fail to continue after choosing some characters.

Great app, before the update. This app has helped me travel the world for years. It was easy, concise and fast for quick translations while conversing with new friends from all over. Unfortunately the new update has made it difficult for me to navigate and sometimes gets me frustrated. Hopefully the old version comes back, the fact that there wasn’t a history of past translations made it quicker and easier.

Amazing. A great app that can even translate using your camera, amazing and very accurate, also NO subscriptions at all!!! I love it!!!!

The latest version is bad. Don't "upgrade". The previous version allowed to translate offline with downloaded languages. This is actually a new app and the better, older one is gone. It's a shame. I will be looking for another app as you cannot roll back to the previous version.

Great App!. Easy to use. If you cannot spell the word, you have the option of saying the word. I also love to use it to let me know how to say it and every time you tap on it, the voice slows down.

Latest update is broken. Not sure what you guys did in the latest update but the picture translation option is very broken. You can’t translate a saved image or take a picture for translation.

Great for multi- language meetings. We’ve been using this app at work for almost 2 years. It’s made our group meetings much more interactive and engaging. I love how it translates one language into several at the same time. Only difficulties we have is using the verbal live translator without the internet.

New update is a step backward. I loved this app until the most recent update, which completely changed the way it works. This was especially problematic for me as it happened in the middle of a trip for me. I had been using the app to communicate with people smoothly until it updated. We all ended up downloading Google translate instead, which I previously liked less. Please bring back auto detection and return to the more user friendly format.

New update is horrible.. The old format was simple and easy to use, now it’s confusing and honestly terrible.

Great translator. For the past 2 days O have been looking for a translator in which I can simply take a picture of what I’m trying to translate. Today, I have found this and gave it a try, it works very well and is free! To all the people that are also trying to find a good app, give this one a try!

Speech playback is messed up. The speech playback sounds like it’s being run at 100x speed. I don’t know how this didn’t get noticed by your QA.

Good app … but Microsoft. Every update tries to circumvent your privacy. Wether automatically enrolling you in analytics report and collecting information you don’t agree to, or turning your microphone “on” - to better serve you of course. Avoid if you value your privacy.

Update is horrible. Change it back!. There was absolutely no need to update this once perfectly useful app. It’s now garbage. The newest update is so terribly confusing to use with most of the main features I downloaded it for now gone. Can’t even figure out how to download languages to use offline anymore - if that’s even still possible. What’s the point of this app if it can’t even do the basic things advertised?

Help. This app was amazing it had voice audio so I could hear how it was pronounced and was very useful but now every time I try to translate something it says “translate request error” I’ve tried to put a different language different words anything but nothing works it just continually says that so I can’t use the app anymore. I am also having a very hard time finding someone I can contact about this to help me so if someone could reach out that would be very helpful thank you

Freezes. Worked great before, suddenly unusable. Thanks Microsoft

Really helpful training a Co worker from russia!. you guys truly made mine and my new coworkers first day amazing! i’ve never had so much fun for free especially since apps normally say free then make you pay afterwards this is just so convenient the language barrier was literally nonexistent between us. And i think that alone is beautiful it was his first week in Canada he couldn’t have felt more welcomed partially because of this amazing app! Thank you sincerely! Y’all Doing gods works

Voice translate. good app but you seem to have dropped the voice back as it will say how to pronounce the word out loud

The best translator app, but short of one thing. Nicer layout then google translate, and less robotic voices. But it doesn’t speak the words in the language you are translating from, which google translate does.

J’aimerais mieux l’ancienne méthode. Bonjour depuis la nouvelle version je n’ai pas comme il fonctionne maintenant. Et il était très efficace dans les applications maintenant il ne traduit plus les applications. Alors avant je l’adorai avec 5 ⭐️ maintenant je lui mets un 2 ⭐️ parce que il ne traduit plus dans safari.

I’ve made new friends with this app!. I work on an organic produce farm building things and fixing things. For 5-6 months of the year we have Mexican farm labourers. They, along with this app, have helped me to learn the basics of Spanish. People really respect and love you when you take the time to learn their language to better communicate. Also, I have been able to teach some English in return! This weekend I’m having Coronas with the Mexican bros and I’m really looking forward to it. USE THIS APP AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE THAT DONT SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE...ITS AMAZING!

Was amazing. Microsoft took what was, hands down the best translation app on the internet and completely destroyed it by changing the UI to something horrendous. Not kidding. It went from literal perfection to a complete trash heap.

Info. Le site est très bien ,j’ai une tablette Apple et j’aimerais bien être capable de mettre la page à l’horizontale comme sur les autres sites.merci

Mise à jour. Bonjour je trouver excellent cette application avant la mise à jour Malheureusement suite à la mise à jour as trop changé les fonctionnalités Je donne 1 étoiles

terrible. this software is awful, such incompetent people , i hate when is not simple and intuitively, for example, i want to download offline languages, you must be lucky, is not in settings, more than that, i selected the 2 languages, and i choose enter my words by keyboard, you are locked with his 2 languages you need to move back to choose the method to enter your words. simply awful!

Too soon. I’m a new user, so I don’t feel qualified to objectively rate this app. I’m still doing comparisons with Google Translate.

I’m an English teacher - It’s a life saver!!!. I use Microsoft translator to communicate with my student’s parents! Without it I wouldn’t be able to speak and be understood or understand. Communication and being understood means ESL clients who feel they can speak with me directly. Work means I have food on the table. I’m very happy with the program! Wendy- Canada Pro Language School

Offline Support Missing. Previous features now removed so rather limited in capability

No longer impressed. I’ve used and loved this ap for about 5 yr. Loved that it worked offline. With the latest update it not only has a totally different look but it no longer works offline..not impressed when I now have to use data or it doesn’t work at all when out of cell range ☹️☹️☹️

Been using for years but the new update is garbage. Just updated the app I don’t know what they did but it’s garbage now. This is also the first review I have ever done because it is that bad. Download something else.

Klingon, but not Latin?. Incredibly surprised that apparently this does not support Latin, not even in text-to-text mode! (Somebody, please prove me wrong so I am forced to retract this review.) Are there no other nerds out there who read books with occasional Latin phrases or words? I am not educated enough to know Latin, but many times I have come across Latin phrases in print, but this otherwise helpful app just won't help me out with them. I suppose Klingon is just more important...

One important feature missing. 4 stars, but it’s missing the ability to tap the arrow between the language pair to reverse the order. Many people using the app to learn will want to know the word from their mother language, then they will hear a word to translate to their mother language. This happens almost every other word, so reversing the order quickly is important. Currently, you have to drop down the menu on both sides and find the languages again, but on opposing side.

Great app but missing IMessages. I use this app a lot and it translate well but I usually have to copy and past from iMessage to the app. I have noted another app that translates within iMessages but only has so many languages (more than Microsoft) and does not do grammar well, like Microsoft Translator. But one thing it has over Microsoft is it translate right in iMessage. The other app is Mate-Translator. Microsoft is falling behind. Is this translator ever going to have an option to work and translate right in iMessage?

I love this app soooo much!. This app is AMAZING!!! I have a friend that speaks Portuguese and I can speak to her with this app! Some of the languages don’t have the person saying the translation. it only shows the words no person saying it SOMETIMES. Mostly the person saying this. I have a lot of friends who speak UK and Brazilian Portuguese and even Chinese! No changes Please. I love the app the way it is. The app is so awesome. You definitely need to get this! 😻

Horrible for Eng to Polish. Maybe translating into Polish isn’t the highest priority for translators, especially this one but I downloaded it to help me communicate with a friend who is a recent immigrant. She speaks English decently but I thought it would be nice to meet her somewhere in the middle to make her feel more welcome and comfortable. There wasn’t a single translation that was close to accurate. In fact, I had her simply say “hello.” She was so embarrassed with what came up she whispered to me that it translated to “bra.” Google translate is just as bad. I’ll try iTranslate again but don’t have high hopes. I did research on my laptop for the best translators and this one came in 2nd behind Google. So very disappointed!

Highly recommend. Works off line.. I downloaded about a dozen “free” translation apps before leaving for France. Most of them required some form of invasive registration to open, so I deleted them. When I got to France, my cell service didn’t work but this app worked pretty well in off line mode. It could translate about 60% in photo mode. It probably would have done better if I was connected to the web though.

Great but. Best app yet. However some words are still translated wrong from Arabic to Kurdish. For example امراض الجلدية والتناسلية there’s still no actual legal word of translation of تناسلية in Kurdish. I hope you make contact with government to create a word. Second word that doesn’t exist in Kurdish language is “fellowship” in Arabic its : “ الزمالة الدراسية" however no translation exists for Kurdish

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. I loved this app until the recent update. Now there is just one place to translate from and if you want to reverse the translations, you can’t simply press a “swap” button. You also can’t just select the other language because it already is “checked” as the second language so you have to pick a third language first and then go back and swap the primary language to the secondary language and then you can swap. This system worked just fine before they ruined it with this update.

Unfortunately, I have to compose this sideways. This software does not work with iPAD Air. It gives great translations, but, unfortunately, it is locked into position and the only way one can use it with iPAD is to flip it portrait-orientation, which, if you use it with a keyboard, as I do, is quite unwieldy and means you have to disconnect the power. You program is locked and cannot be changed in orientation to suit the user’s machine. This is unfortunate.

It could be a great app. There is so much potential here, also there is a lot of room for improvement. Especially on the UX side. - Translations are working only about 50% of the time. Does not pick up voice in silent environment from close. - Many times there is a huge lag for the translation - Does not speak automatically anymore. On new UI this option is not available anymore - The other user's microphone can pick up your voice and it can mess up the conversation - The UI stops updating, freezes in conversation and only updates when one user leaves the conversation There are a LOT of these "small" UX problems. It is not that the underlying machine learning technology that doesn't work. The translations are pretty solid, when the app works... These are bugs in the UX / UI.

Best Spanish Translation App. I use this app to help me talk to my fiancé who lives in the Dominican Republic. I’m not fluent in Spanish so it’s not only translating what I have trouble saying but I’m also learning how to speak it more. The only down sight is because Mexican, Dominican, Columbian, & Puerto Rican Spanish all differs, it doesn’t always translate right and causes confusion. Maybe twice it’s caused arguments due to how it’s translated. 😂 Other than that this has been the best app I used for translating.

Amazing!!!. I haven’t been using this app very long, but so far it is amazing. It does what it says. No subscriptions, no fees, totally free. I mainly got this because I was on a website in safari that was in Italian. I really wanted to read what the website was about. It’s just so amazing how you can turn any webpage into your language with a click of a button. Thank you Microsoft.

Oh my goodness.... This app is actually laughably terrible at translation. I was trying to translate an email from Japanese to English and it did not make any sense at all. There were very few words that it seemed to be able to translate correctly. Now, this does mean that it should get only 1 star. But, in light of how much the translations made me laugh, I gave it an extra star. There is no way my email about video games in any way has the phrase, “oh please God, oh no, oh please.” So.... yeah, lol. Very much so do not recommend this app. Or at least not the image feature. I have no reason to try out the speech portion, but imagine it’s just as laughably bad.

Almost perfect!. The translations of English to Spanish is great! The photo translator needs work as often says “hmmm, can’t translate that.” If the speaking translator worked without internet, that would be fantastic. Many times there are people who cannot read due to vision problems and the verbal would solve the problem. Unfortunately, it does not work without the internet.

A life saver!. On our trip it was super helpful! We went to France, Paris and I have been learning a tad bit of French. I don’t know what menus or signs say so this app helped tremendously. My parents were sceptical about it but it was a life saver when our menus were only in French. The picture app is perfect English and it was THE BEST! 10/10 stars. The speaking part is a little ehhhh in real life but it’s a good app all around. Thanks Microsoft :)

Great App, but can be better. I enjoyed the app, but the updates have gone in the wrong direction. I would make the following changes. 1. Multi-line deletion. We should be able to delete conversation strings, and not just single translations. 2. Verbal translations. A previous version allowed you to select verbal translations which read the translations around. It was great for communicating with bilingual conversations.

So easy to use, and accurate. My bi- lingual son and his wife as well as many of my Hispanic friends, tell me how perfectly worded , my translations are by using this system… I recommend it to all, it’s not hard to use, a person can carry on an entire conversation rapidly… Again it’s the accuracy that counts in the translation.

Needs to add a flip translation button!. Works well enough for translating one way, but a super pain if that person now has to answer you. You can’t pick the output language as the new input language, nor the input as the output. You have to switch output to a 3rd language, then the prior output as the new input, then switch the output off that 3rd language to your primal input one. AT THE LEAST, they shouldn’t block out having the input and output language identical; then at least it’s only a 2 step swap rather than the ridiculous need of forcing you to use a 3rd language to make the change.

Constant voice translation - no stopping. Hello, I’ve been using the app to listen to what my girlfriends family is saying, but the voice translation automatically stops when someone stops talking for a few seconds. Would like to be able to leave the voice translation on until I press stop. A lot of times the other person is just taking a moment and continues talking and I have to press the translate button a lot. Thanks!

Disappointed. I’ve had this app for a few months now and up until yesterday it was working fine with absolutely no problems. I would’ve given it five stars but it’s stopped translating words in photos. Maybe that wouldn’t be such a problem if I could copy & paste words from photos that I take or from certain apps but that’s not possible. The photo translation feature was one that I heavily relied on. Microsoft, please fix this as soon as possible.

Oh my god, what did you do to a nice app?. This review is for version current as of March 2023. This update is so buggy, it’s useless. When I take a snapshot, it has spreadsheet type interface and it jumbles all words on the left, so, basically useless. Also, I want to manually switch languages (to/from) and it doesn’t work. The old interface of switching was so simple and practical. This is causing problems for short sentences or just words where it sometimes doesn’t know which of the two languages it’s translating.

Better than Google translate!. Where has this been all my life?! I speak Cantonese and Google Translate still doesn’t have that dialect so now I switched over! The conversation mode is lovely and will be super useful when traveling. Now, please add the feature to translate real time when pointing camera to block of text. Taking a picture of first is cumbersome.

Microsoft translate is amazing tool. I believe it is getting closer on many fronts and languages.... especially when translating from English to Chinese. We must however be careful when writing our original text that requires a translation in that the English language should be clear and avoid all ambiguities in what we want to be translated as the tool can’t assume what we mean to say. The clearer we are the more accurate the translation is. Excellent

Hasn’t been working as well lately. This app is how I have survived two years in China. However I’m not sure how I will survive my third year as the app is not working as well lately. The picture part usually always translated typed text but now it is almost never working. It usually says “hum can’t translate that” this is very frustrating as I use the photo translate A LOT for menus and signs. I deeply regret updating the app as this is what has caused it to stop working. Whatever you did to “fix” the bugs instead caused them please remedy this; I’m really struggling in China now!!

Awful changes for translating in voice. I cannot use this app to translate in voice as it no longer play whats being translated through the speaker in real time. The split mode of the older version where each person press their respective button to translate was excellent. It seems some features that made the previous versions great was taken away. Regarding UI changes that many have criticized, I do have to agree that overall it’s a step backward. It has become more google like, which lessens its appeal for those who prefer the older and arguably more intuitive UI of the previous versions.

Terrible Update, Safari Translate Button Gone, Update Message. Terrible Update, Safari Translate Button Gone, It is the most Useful Feature. This feature more useful than Apple Translate button which works only half the time. Please ADD THIS FEATURE BACK, but for now i wait. i revise my review later, if this Translate Safari Feature BACK 2nd Update Message - up from previous 1 star, I saw a message back from Microsoft of using Microsoft edge for the translate button, i just use plain safari, so plz just add that back. If possible. (Will change review back to 5 star as soon Safari Translate Button back.

The biggest and the best surprise. I had a little translater ,that I installed, and yesterday I find that Translator, which I did not installed, really one of the best surprise in my life,I speake several languages and sometimes I forget the words, for example Greek, which I ve been speaking when was a child,I kind of forgot it and now before I’ll go to Greece my language will improve, thank you

This is the best app I have ever used!. I am a 5th grade language arts teacher. This app has been so amazing for my students I teach ESOL teacher within a regular classroom. My students can hear my lesson translated in real time. Any work we do, they write in their language and THEN translate it to English! This is life changing!!!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this!

It gets the job done. Only 2 bullet points for future improvement (At least as far as Russian-English-Russian is concerned). The 2nd is dependent upon the 1st. • when translating a particular word from one language into another such as: Russian English князь Prince You show make sure that when the translation is reversed, preferably it shows the same word. English Russian Prince Принц In such cases when it is not possible, the secondary meaning which generates the original translation should be listed as an alternate on the bottom right. • when translating sentences and long statements the algorithm needs improvement and take into account the other words being written to better identify its word choice.

Webpage translate fails 50% of the time. I got this app specifically to translate Arabic webpages to English as I currently live in the Middle East and I don’t read or speak Arabic. It seems a good alternative to iTranslate as that app won’t translate webpages without a $5/month subscription. So far I’ve attempted to use the app 4 times to translate webpages from Arabic to English and it has failed twice, indicating to me the “the page is already in English” when approximately 90% of the text on the page is Arabic. In both failed attempts the first several lines of text on the webpages were Arabic. While I realize that 4 attempts is not much, 50% is still a complete fail.

amazing and useful. It would be even better if I could translate voice from a media file like an audio recording or a video. Also, sometimes I get emails and I don’t know what language they’re in. I can copy and paste the text into M.S. Translator, but it doesn’t auto detect the language. I have to guess at it until a translation works.

Great app but..... When I downloaded this app I loved it, Basically, it was the best and it's free. But as of recently it's been crashing and getting an SSL ERROR message. I have no clue what that means. I uninstalled the app and downloaded it. It will still crash then it will start working for a while then crash again with the same error message. This was my favorite translator app now I don't know what to do. Please please fix this so I can give 5 ✨✨✨✨✨ Thanks

So darn efficient. I need to use translation for Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Haitian Creole. Not only does it translate using real, everyday words but it does it very accurately. I love that you can change the voices based on country. Take a peek at the Spanish and you’ll see you can change the voice based on which Latin American country. I’ve been telling my coworkers about this app. It’s very impressive.

From Helpful to Worthless. This app went from super helpful to absolutely worthless in one update. The previous version was very intuitive. Living abroad in China I was able to quickly switch back and forth between translating messages from Chinese and translating messages into Chinese. With this clunky update, by the time I’m finished trying to switch back and forth, it’s taken me ten times as long, frustrating both me and the person I’m trying to converse with. I tried to give it some time to see if it became more intuitive to me, but no such luck. This app is just awful now.

Please change it back to the previous version.. I use to love this app and have used it for many years while living abroad…But this new version makes it extremely difficult to use for even the most simple of tasks. You can no longer change the wording directly, which means you must retype or re-copy/paste and then enter this new excerpt in to double check perhaps one changed word, causing you to waste much more time than with the previous version. Not to mention that the visual aspects of this version are also quite confusing and less attractive to look at than it’s predecessor. Unfortunately if it doesn’t get changed back, I’ll be deleting this app, which is a shame since it’s been a faithful companion for so long. Fingers crossed they change it back, If they do I’ll change this rating to reflect that change

What happened in the new version?. You used to be able to do a simple copy of the translated text and paste it into another app. It’s gone???? The app has become useless to me simply because this feature was removed. Update 3/6/23: So now you can copy, but it copies EVERYTHING (Original Language:Text, Translated Language:Text) ???? What if I just want the simple translated text????? This update is not any better. Why did you fix something that wasn’t broken in the first place???? I’m starting to use the iOS translator and it works just fine. Sorry, I won’t be coming back to this app.

Why is there no landscape mode?????. I don’t understand why there isn’t a landscape mode. I’ve been brushing up on my German, learning the newest slang and phrases, with Google Translate. I’ll put Readly on-screen with a German mag using split screen so that I can type words and phrases into Translate from the mags to get English equivalents. With Microsoft Translate I can’t do that because there’s NO LANDSCAPE mode. What?? I can’t even understand. Oh, and when it does support landscape, it should be able to do split screen. By the way, I can’t attest to the accuracy of the translations because I haven’t been able to use it like I want.

Very handy. I like to refer to words & phrases in my communications to give them character. I initially got this to help me remember my French which I took throughout my high school years (many, many years ago!) The saying “use it or lose it” is true. Not having anyone to converse in what was once my second language, I struggle to remember .... well, most of it (40+ years later). This app is very user friendly. I’ve been using it for about 8 months now & so far, so good! 👍

Best Translation App. I used to use Google Translate, but now that Microsoft Translator not only looks better but works better, I haven't looked back. Also, Microsoft has added offline translation. Big thumbs up. The best translation app in the App Store. [Edit: I had problems with the app crashing as soon as I opened it. It just started today. I re-downloaded the app and everything was fine, but nevertheless, there is a bug afoot!]

Russian to English is ok, but English to Russian isn’t useful. I communicate with native Russian speakers and they complain constantly about me sending unintelligible email. I paste the English text, copy this app’s Russian translation, then paste back in to see if it makes sense to me after I re-translate it back to English. If I see any odd words, I’ll correct them and try again, but the result is the same at the receiving end for my Russian speakers. They tell me they don’t understand my letter.

No longer student friendly :(. I was loving this app for my brand new -to-English learners in fourth grade. They speak Spanish & Ukrainian, and not all are fluent readers. So audio is a must! Now with the update it’s USELESS! I have to stop the auto translate and press play on each sentence to be read aloud. There’s no split screen option. It’s so cumbersome and stops the flow of learning and chatting with peers. Have not figured out the use of the conversation mode. Again, audio is a must and if we’re all at the same table it picks up all the conversation from each person instead of only one. I almost cried because this app was a teacher’s best friend.

4 stars because of lack of “clear all” button. I use this for my law enforcement job where I may talk to multiple people throughout the day. Having to manually select each transcript is a pain in the a**. Other people don’t need to see what I’ve said to others. If you could create an option to have a “clear all transcripts” that would be immensely helpful. Having to manually delete 100 transcripts is daunting.

Works Great!. I’m using it in conjunction with my Spanish learning app from Pimsleur & the Spanish Simplified Learning Program from Gail LeBow. It works very well to clarify things I don’t understand & introduce new words & sounds that I just want to know. I have found no bugs with this app & it does NOT display advertisements! Works great on iPhone. I have been using it daily for about a month now.

Massive Downgrade. Sometime in the last few months this app experienced a massive downgrade. Offline languages no longer work, the UI got confusing, and it became rather useless for a translation app. Nothing worse than developing reliance on a product, then go to use it only to discover they changed everything to the point of being useless. I actively remembering downloading a bunch of languages for offline use, but now support articles say offline is coming soon - like e should be excited. The MS Product Manager behind this mess needs to be fired. Just do a restore of the old version please!

It’s perfect!. I find so many sites on Pinterest that are in a language I don’t speak (or read) and I’m so glad I found this because now I can just open the site in Safari, then translate! I’ve found tons of DIY projects that before I thought I wouldn’t be able to do. Now I’m able to do most of them because this app does all the hard work of translating for me!

I love it until it stops working. Yes, I have had this app for several years in China and can use many aspects of it. However, I find every once and awhile every thing says the same thing and I have to delete it and start over. Very sad because I am often not in a WiFi area and cannot upload it again right away. Some times I am stranded.

No Bluetooth speaker to activate on solution. Hi , I am trying to use this app to do translation so that voice goes through Bluetooth speaker that is connected to my iphone. Although all applications on m iphone work perfectly like transferring sound to Bluetooth speaker, only Microsoft Translator does not work on Bluetooth speaker. Note that I have iPhone 7 iOS 13.5.1 your quick resolution is highly appreciated. I have checked back on previously suggested forum help support on Microsoft with no luck. Kindly do not send me a place to search. Kindly provide me with a solution.... Thanks.

Go to app for accurate and idiomatic translations. There are lots of literal translation products out there. the better ones are more accurate when it comes to idiomatic translations that you can actually use to communicate in the native language. I have used several throughout the years and to date this one is the best.

Update is terrible. I used this app for 2 years and absolutely loved it. After the last update, I cannot figure out how to simply type an English phrase in and translate it nor type in Spanish and translate it to English. The old layout was simple and worked well. The new layout confuses me. I’m glad I read another user with the same feeling! It once had a unique intuitive layout then looks like it was changed to be similar to another apps layout except it expanded on that apps layout it’s not user friendly at all. At least with the competitive app I can figure out how to use it for my needs.

Apple Watch App Crashes. Every time it completes the translation and I hit the play button the app on crashes. The iPhone and iPad work fine but the watch is horrible. Along with the translation voice crashing the app it doesn’t change to a different language easily, it takes multiple attempts to get it to change. Make the watch version the same quality as the iPhone version and it’s a 5 Star app.
