Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Face ID not working to login to App. It seems that Face ID is not working to login to the App. I’ve tried multiple times by first logging in manually and then enabling Face ID. But every time I logout and then try to log back in, Face ID is not initiated. I login manually again and see that Face ID is disabled. I enable it again, but it goes back to being disabled every time I close the App. Is the Face ID function only for access when the App is logged in, or is it designed to allow fore using Face ID to login when initially opening the app? Reply to developer: I saw your reply and do not agree because after three days of trying, the App will now allow me to login with Face ID. I don’t know what changed in the App, but I just kept doing the same thing. I have now installed the ProtonMail App on my wife’s phone and Face ID is working properly too. Increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars. Update #2: thanks for replying back to feedback so quickly! No, I did not need to choose or select any keychain or password icon. When the app is completely closed (swiping up from the bottom, on both an iphone X and XS Max, to close the ProtonMail app), then pressing the PM icon only once to open the app: FaceID now comes up immediately and after correct recognition, the PM app is unlocked and accessible. It was not like this when I first installed the app, but now it works this way.

App features lag iOS updates, otherwise an okay mail app. This app does not support the ability to change the notification sound- for me, it is stuck on the “Rebound” tone, and I have been unable to hear that tone in most normal environments (outdoors, in vehicles, etc.) as ambient background noise is enough to drown it out. A quick online search will highlight this as having been an issue for all iOS users for quite some time, and recent updates to the Protonmail app have not addressed the issue. Aside from this issue (kind of a big issue if the audible notification isn’t very audible) the app is a functional email app- it sends & receives email as expected. 3-star review due to the ongoing, unaddressed audible notification issue… those of us that pay for protonmail expect & demand better.

Much improved and getting better. Ever since the iOS app rewrite a few months ago, the app has only gotten better. It’s now very responsive and navigation and functionality has really come a long way. Also, now that you can select a message and perform multiple actions on it, there’s nothing left to complain about. The only issue I have is the message that tells me the app can’t reach servers and to try again. If I refresh a few times, it seems to connect and pull down mail just fine. This is happening less than it used to but I still get it when I have very good connectivity. Overall though, this has become a 5 star app when it used to be about 3 star. Bravo on the rewrite and I’m looking forward to the calendar app for iOS.

Some issues but worth supporting. Changing my review to 5 stars. Had no idea that there was an option to reset all data. That seems have resolved the freezing issues I was having. Thank you, Devs! Old review: I have used Proton for years. I love their products, and I'll continue using on the desktop. But the iPad app is completely unusable now. It freezes constantly on me. I've tried to Report a Bug, but that also freezes and sometimes even causes the app to crash. I'm a huge advocate for Proton Mail and I probably always will be. This review is for the app only. If there is any other way I can report these bugs please let me know. I'd love to be able to use Proton Mail on the go.

Great app, could use some enhancements. I am an avid Proton user and I enjoy using this app for email as a ProtonPlus customer. That being said I would like to see some small enhancements that would make using the app a bit faster or more seamless. 1. Add an image compressor to the attachment uploader. iPhone photos are 6-8MB usually and if I want attach multiple photos, I have to compress them outside of ProtonMail first otherwise I’ll reach the 25MB limit after about 3-5 pictures! Pretty inconvenient. An alternative would be file dropping with ProtonDrive, but maybe that’s an idea for the distant future. 2. Implement ForceTouch commands for Notification Center notifications, especially “mark as read.” This would save me the trouble of opening the app 75% of the time. 3. Implement a swipe command to scroll through different emails. As it stands I have to open an email, go back to inbox, open the next email, go back to inbox, etc. It would be faster if one could swipe from the edge left or right to sequence through your inbox. All in all this is a good quality app, just missing some more modern features I got used to from other major email apps.

Amazing Privacy-Focused Email. I love ProtonMail! I’ve been a paid subscriber for several years and a user of the iOS app since it’s inception, and I am very happy with the quality of service, friendly UI, and focus on privacy and security. That said, I’d love to see just one or two changes. First of all, the preview notification of emails only shows the Title field. I have no problem with not showing a preview of the body of the email, but I would love to know who the email was from! If the sender would pop up in the notification, it would be perfect. Maybe there’s a way to do this, but I’ve looked and haven’t seen anything. Secondly, as an admitted Apple fanboy, I would also love to see an Apple Watch app for checking messages quickly or when I’m away from my phone/desktop. Now I’m not super technical but I’m sure there’s some technical thing with privacy and encryption and whatnot and displaying messages on the Apple Watch, but it’s still something that I would like to see if at all possible. Other than those suggestions, this app and ProtonMail are about as perfect as email can get. I whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone!

In the end encryption is vital to our basic human rights. Isn’t combat reaching everyone of us to utilize some form of end and encryption in our communications very much like governments due. When companies begin to read and index emails easily because of the PGP protocols it makes hacking seamless for nefarious actors as well as governments looking to monitor individual citizens in order to target. Therefore proton mail offers an excellent source I’ll be at a pricey cost. It is important to note that another email provider Nonnas to do note provides even more robust encryption as the email address and your subject line are encrypted. They are free service offers similar options as proton mail but far less expensive cost. They are also in the EU with much more stringent privacy standards. Neither one of these platforms are subject to US search warrants. But note it is far more important to encrypt your email address so that you can’t be targeted in the subject line is an equally important tap task to be encrypted. The downside is the GUI is poor very poor. Proton mail offers a nice GY that integrates with the devices very nicely. All in all when comparing email platforms the only other platform I’ve seen that measures up to these two is start Mail.

"new redesign" started a downhill slide. current top issues with the app for me: - addition of a 'feature' to send emails to backup email account to tell me I have unread emails in my primary account (really? who wants email to tell you that you have email?) - unreadably small font size for mobile devices that cannot be changed, making the app basically useless on a phone for many. - settings in ios app are not remotely similar to settings in the browser version of proton mail; many new and existing 'features' and settings cannot be turned off or changed from within the ios version of the app. - pre-scripted responses to issues that always start with 'sorry for the "inconvenience" along with a promise to 'listen' to complaints...hey, guys, don't apologize, don't 'listen'- instead take some action on the problems, and quit trying to add 'features' only a small minority of paying customers want! - recent service disruptions large enough to warrant an 'explanation' from the management team- but not planned well enough to warn users in advance of a major event. - rhetoric from the management team that always seem to blame problems on the valiant struggle proton is undertaking to make the internet safer and more private- this reads like marketing speak, and is vaguely insulting to the intelligence of paying customers.

Latest Comments as of May 2, 2022. Thanks so much for the updates and for being able to easily report bugs. You always get back to me. Really appreciate that. April 5, 2022: Latest Update Has Issues Hello! While I love the new update, I am no longer able to see what Folders (including Inbox) my saved emails are in. For example, if I save emails under the label, Protonmail, if I go into that Label, I cannot see what Folder the emails were put into. Used to be able to see that. Thanks. March 28, 2022: So Loving the New Update Thank you for the new update. I’ve always loved Protonmail and only have ever had a few glitches that Support helped me with. This latest update is awesome. Thank you very much.

Great services, app needs work. Very pleased with the email and vpn services. Recently bought a visionary plan to try out a year in hopes of migrating all my domains emails under proton. While the web email works perfect and the iOS apps function ok, I have a big qualm with the UI of the app for iOS. The left column sidebar has this huge separate area, that does not appear to be moveable or collapsible, that lists link to settings, bug reporting, log out, and more. This utility section separates the main mail inbox, trash, archive, etc., from the user designated folders and labels, thus requiring scrolling past the utility section to see folders. It’s an annoyance, folders should be with folders. You can see what I’m talking about in the 3rd preview pic. On the web based, this is not the case, and user creates folders & labels are right under main inbox, trash, etc. this is the way it should be, folders in the mailbox section. I really wish this would be fixed to be either the same layout as web based, or maybe user configurable. Rarely do I need settings or bug reporting, but I use folders and labels multiple times a day for different emails and organizing, and the current app makes this not very cohesive layout. Maybe nit picky, but I am not sure I’d be able to deal with moving all my emails to the service if the app keeps this layout. I’d be bummed as proton supports folders and labels for emails, which I love.

Awesome service and app. I have been a Proton user for a number of years ever since I first understood the need for a more secure email service than than what the various freebies were offering. Proton’s free service is amazing, but I also wanted to support the organization and take advantage of some of their other services, so I have been a subscriber for awhile. I use the Proton email app (as well as the Proton Drive and Calendar apps) on my iPhone and iPad, and I have never had any issues on either device. The email app is nicely designed with a clean interface. The app (and web-based version) works really well, and I know that my data is more secure because of it (and I’m not being inundated with advertisements that seem to know way too much about me). I highly recommend Proton all around and am grateful that such an organization exists given the myriad companies that want your personal information in exchange for a “free” service. Keep up the great work!

Raw thoughts. I had this vpn for years and I also had express vpn before this one but it is more expensive but I don’t know why by itself it will turn off without me manually doing it. At least once a week I look to see if my vpn is connected and the majority of the time it’s not and ALSO need to reconfigure it he settings on my iPhone. I never had this problem where the vpn would turn off by itself without letting u even know. Vpn privacy is problem great I seriously wouldn’t know but I what I do know is if your not connected the privacy doesn’t matter. Express vpn never did that for me or make me passcode to reconnect the vpn every other day. It makes no sense to even have it if it doesn’t run all the time without me babysitting it. I mainly use it for public Wi-Fi within 2-4 days it will turn off and make me log in every week. 2-3 years it has always done this. Will not renew membership even tho it was a great deal but if it doesn’t stay on I rather kick rocks and not even have one… Also it has gotten more frequent turning of on it own.

Multiple Reinstalls of App. I like using Proton to encrypt my emails, and it works great for me on Mac. However, in the two months I’ve had the app on my iPhone (always keeping iOS updated to the most recent), I have had to delete and reinstall three times. The app stops opening for me. I try to open, it shows it is loading for a couple of seconds, and then crashes. When I reported the issue, I was told to update my iOS, which I had stated in my submission was done before sending the bug report. The alternative offered was to join the Beta. I am not comfortable with participating in Beta testing. Otherwise, there was nothing else to offer. I am not happy with this response as it seems others use the app without this issue and give 5 star ratings. I gave 3 stars because when it works, it’s great. But until this issue I am experiencing is fixed, there will be no improvement in my rating.

go Protonmail ; and thanks developers for all your hard work and courtesy. I am a basic user of email. I had been with Yahoo Mail for as many years as it’s been around. The incessant boring into my brain of advertisements ruined the interface for me and cost me any trust at all in the security of my emails. Proton mail fixed everything that I found depressing about Yahoo! Mail. it’s simple and easy to use; it’s free; the clarity and cleaner layout for me are phenomenal, and I “sleep better“ because of the security provisions. I actually look forward to going in Protonmail just because I’m not gonna be bombed with ads all the time. I’m going to upgrade to the premium version not because I need it but because I want to support the hard-working people who make Protonmail happen. Rock on!

Worse Now. I did not think they could get worse but they have They do not answer any support issues because they are scared to death to face the truth that there failing . It doesn’t reflect here because Apple reviews haven’t been honest in many years but in other Social media and forums people are very upset . They cannot separate regular mail from spam so all your emails are found in spam . I did some extra work for someone at a company and in return I received some big coupons but Proton will not allow any attachments come through even though this company is a trusted and in my contacts. I am also signed up at their site with my proton credentials but that make no difference to Proton. Therefore I had to set up a temporary email with gmail to get the coupon which is insulting because I just got through transferring everything to Proton . Please what ever you do stay away from the premium package because it isn’t worth at all . I really need my head examined because they started going down hill 6 months ago and I still had faith that the premium plan would be better even after the free side was failing on all fronts but that was my stupidity and now I am paying for it . I wish they would give us some sign things will get better but they actually take the time to send me a email to tell me they done have time to answer my support email .

Service gets 5-Stars, The new iOS app 1.5 Stars.. The service is fantastic, in fact I am a subscribing customer and an so glad to have shed my spyware e-mail accounts. The iOS app was never great but it was adequate, the latest version released 4/8/22 is horrible. It has this “Conversation” mode “feature” much like the focused inbox thing in Outlook that groups e-mails together from the same sender/subject. I know that many people might love this but I hate it! The app also removes the past messages in the tread from the chronological listing in the inbox so only the latest message shows, I REALLY HATE THIS! Often I go looking for something I know I got 2 weeks ago but someone in the thread sent a message later so the message from person A from 2 weeks ago is missing and you have to open the one from Person B a day ago to find the one from Person A, Aggghhhh! Just give us options! Many people like that style but some don’t. Please give us a way to turn this off. I hate this so much that I’m trying to figure out how to reinstall the old version.

Can’t send important emails/inconsistent. I’ve been using Prtnmail for a while, and it has recently been brought to my attention that I haven’t been able to send emails to specific secure emails, namely to my Credit Union Financial Operations (finops) and to the Claims Adjuster of my insurance company. Additionally, I can’t use my ProtonMail email address as my primary email address for my bank account, as they don’t allow anonymous email addresses to be used by their customers. Is/are there ways to get around my issues I’m experiencing? These are important emails, and I wasn’t aware that they didn’t go through until I had contacted the aforementioned companies to follow-up with my emails. Had I not contacted my Credit Union, I would not have known that my email message didn’t get received by the finops department of my Credit Union. On the other hand, I did receive an email alert immediately after attempting to send my message to the Claims Adjuster stating that my message failed to deliver. Can somebody at ProtonMail lend me assistance or explain the reason(s) as to why my messages aren’t going through? How can I resolve this issue? This is a deal-breaker for me, and I’ll need to find a secure email server that I can use for more consistency/reliability. It makes me wonder whether or not other important email messages I had “sent” were actually sent to the recipient(s).

Excellent Privacy Focused Email. TLDR version: great app/service for the price. App could use some creature comforts from an app like Spark or Airmail. It does what it advertises and does so at a fair price, especially if paired with their VPN product. In my opinion it works best when paired with something like gmail for the items where security isn’t as critical. That way you’re not missing out on the convenience of google for certain items (family calendars or contact sync to iDevices for example), at least until Proton is able to provide solutions for those use cases. Only suggestions to make this mail app better would be to have a one touch option for archiving a message on the screen when I read a message. Currently one must either call press to open the menu bar further then again the archive, or press the folder button at the top then choose the folder and press apply. The second functionality improvement would be use of share sheet or at least ability to export a message as a pdf. Every now and then it’s nice to be able to forward an email to someone as a text and export to pdf makes that happen easily. The other suggestions are cosmetic only, and that is more color schemes, at least a light and dark would be nice and the option to use other app icons. The lock is nice but they also have the various proton logos that would work well too.

RIP OFF DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH APP. I paid for the plus account and although I was charged it never worked. The support staff was dismissive and unhelpful. I decided to seek a refund from apple and just use my 5 accounts (allowed on app) on my laptop. Then out of the blue and for no reason whatsoever they suspended all five accounts. Mind you I use these for business and had several messages I was waiting for responses on. Suffice to say this app and protonmail are both UNRELIABLE. Do not waste your time on this app or service. This app and mail service is at best helpful for shady characters and NOT for legitimate business operations. Unless you want your business’s brand damaged when your accounts disappear. You’ve been warned. In response to your response I did provide the receipt to Protonmail and you ignored it. My 5 accounts were to be used with my PAID account (order ID mkqqyysnf2) on Sep 17th. Trying to pretend otherwise on the app store reviews is disingenuous at best. I reiterate this is NOT a service that is reliable enough to be used for legitimate business purposes.

This is better than 4.2 stars. Definitely deserves 5 stars. I read through a few of them, and most of the one star reviews seem pretty bogus.(I know 4.2 stars is not bad, but this is a 5 star app all day) The UI is not the same as google. Some of the features are little tedious. But they’re on top of stuff and I never miss any emails. I’ve never had any trouble sending, and no one has had any trouble receiving my emails. If you associate with an institution that doesn’t accept proton, or any other private email, as your primary email. Then you should probably stop associating with them. I ditched Google about a year ago. I don’t agree with them on multiple levels. Proton is secure and they’re never gonna give you up, let you down, run around, or desert you.

They segregate free users. Putting such a short time limit on users to upgrade their storage to 1GB by finishing an arbitrary checklist is incredibly disrespectful and demanding. People have things going on and many users will not meet the time limit for valid reasons. For ProtonMail to not understand that, shows that it is not the equitable, accepting, inclusive company it claims to be. For example, the Google community would be outraged if Gmail gave all users one month to upgrade and then segregated the father undergoing chemo, the depressed student drowning in school work, and the stressed single mother of three into permanent inferior accounts. The time limit is immoral if it is permanent. It is basically saying “screw your chemo, screw your depression, screw your stress. Give us money for something other accounts get for free because you could not log in for a month.” This policy is honestly disgusting. Companies that treat their users like tools to be used and manipulated do not last. Good companies don’t find ways to divide, segregate, and alienate users into account castes before they’ve even been able to decide if they want to become a paid user. I reached out to customer support but they basically told me it wasn’t their problem and I should have prioritized their useless checklist over something serious that was going on in my life.

Go anywhere else. I can’t even tell you what using this app is like. Why? Because proton has flagged my account for “violating their terms of service.” My brother, my father, and I all made accounts in order to deal with a consulship appointment. Because we made them at the same time, under advice from a law firm, proton flagged our account. Simple fix right? Wrong. Customer service has been beyond unhelpful. They refuse to read any information we provide and simply refer us to their TOS (which says absolutely nothing about 3 people making account who happen to share the same last name). The best the can offer is “read only” which again, is useless to us as we need to be able to communicate back and forth with the consul using these accounts, and this was a mistake on their end. They simply refuse to do anything about their mistake. DO NOT USE under any circumstances, this company has absolutely horrendous customer service. It has completely put me off any and all services from this company and I will be telling all of my friends, coworkers, and anyone who will listen to take their business else where. Such a simple fix on their end and they will not do it and will not provide any reasoning.

Protonmail the service, is great. Protonmail the app, not so much.. The Protonmail service it self is mostly good. However this app has severe usability problems. I'm writing this as someone who's trying to move away from Gmail towards something more privacy focused. And the Protonmail service is indeed great in that respect. But I wish the developers would try to take some UI/UX lessons from Apple Mail and Gmail. For example, archiving multiple messages is unnecessarily difficult. After selecting one or more messages, the user has to select the Move To Folder option, then touch the Archive folder, then touch Done. In Gmail, archive is a top-level option the user can touch immediately after selecting one or more messages. Am I just completely out of touch to expect that archiving a message is a common action? More common than deleting, tagging or marking as read/unread? Another annoyance is the unreliable behavior when responding to notifications. One would expect that when notified of a new message from the iOS notification tray, the user would be directed to that new message after touching the notification. This happens about 50% of the time. The other half of the time you're often stuck in a loading screen. I've simply started to work around the problem by dismissing the notification, and then manually launching the Protonmail app to find and view the new message. It boggles the mind that what should be a critical user path should be so buggy.

Great mail app, one or two minor concerns. Love the privacy features and mission of Proton. This mail app is perfect for me, but I’ve noticed one minor thing that bugs me. If I sort my mail into folders, the mail I’ve sent gets filtered into those folders and does not appear in the “Sent” default folder. I would have expected the mail I’ve sent to appear in both the folder I’ve sorted the conversation chain AND the default “Sent” folder. Another one is that when I have dark mode on, I can read emails fine, but when I go to reply to certain emails, some text is not legible because it is black text on my dark mode background. I would have expected the text to flip colors from the background.

Great Engineering, Poor UI. Paid user for over 2 years. Great construction, great premise but in my opinion it’s unusable in iOS without conversation grouping and a number of other design weaknesses currently make it unappealing against all the services it’s competing with. Something as simple as scrolling through emails feels unfamiliar. The scrolling experience is different than anything else in iOS. Typography and use of color is weak and makes things hard on the eyes. Email header design looks shrunken. Organization is lacking support for sub folders. No dark mode. The list goes on and the company is slow to improve so far - albeit I understand their focus on security slows them down and I prefer this but the UX needs to be dramatically improved over the next several years in order to remain relevant. I’ll continue support for the time being with the hopes that will happen but the web beta of v4.0 is not particularly inspiring. At the moment it looks like a new shade of purple against large white spaces again with just some new icons that are placed slightly differently. I think the design would be much much better off if it adhered to the iOS design language. It’s so far from a normal iOS experience that it doesn't accomplish its most basic goal - appeal to the average iPhone user.

Much better! Thank you!. I am an individual who relies on a screen reader to navigate content, and I have contacted Proton numerous times, giving feedback on accessibility. I wrote a review a while ago expressing concern over BoiceOver not reading a given message/composer field. Within the last two releases, the problem no longer exists; I can now use VoiceOver to read my message before sending it. Every time I contacted someone, Proton responded within 24-48 hours, and every time they stated that they passed my feedback to the respected team. Proton has improved its accessibility, making my life easier. While there is still work that can improve the user experience for screen reader users on iPhone, it is a step in the right direction. I will continue using the service and provide advice concerning accessibility. Thank you for all your work thus far!

Proton Fail. I’ve been using the app off and on since August 2021, but not as my primary. Then one day out of the blue it logged me out and said “Your session has expired because you have been inactive for awhile or because it has been revoked”. Great. I tried my password, but it no longer works, I guess they erased it with their recent update and or reset it? I do not have MFA or another security email associated with it. When I reached out to them for help they asked me many questions and I answered to the best of my ability. One of which was what was in my sent folder, I told them and another was what time I last logged into the app. Very odd questions, I have no clue the last time I logged into the app, I would not have the precise time and further more I don’t logon into it, I just touch the app! They refused to help me. They stated, “We regret to inform you that the answers you provided were insufficient to validate your account ownership”. I get it, it’s a security thing and in some ways my fault for not setting up more security measures, but I’ve given them a lot of details, what’s in my inbox, deleted and sent folder, also when I downloaded the app for the first time. Still nothing, with no way to help me. Now I have to change my email on a lot of my accounts yet again which you can see in my email box that they asked about. One of which, Dominos I won’t be able to, goodbye to my points for a free pizza and good bye Proton unless you can assist a hungry man out.

Fantastic. I’ve had ProtonMail for a few years and happily pay for the premium services. There are so many reasons why I love this service and some of them are obviously centered around the security aspect and the fact that a giant corporate monolith doesn’t use my data without providing me a way to effectively opt out. I think the most important thing though is that they truly listen to their users and implement improvements based on feedback and don’t shower you with useless platitudes making you think that they care - it really seems that they do. That’s important not just for the improvement of the service but for the comfortability of the people using it. Thanks to those who work hard to keep ProtonMail (and other Proton services) a fantastic product.

Terrible billing practices. This company has terrible billing practices. They are not consistent between accounts and it is almost impossible to get out of the subscription because the only way to get out of it is to downgrade the subscription—there isn’t a “do not renew button“ Once you pay for the year, you can’t get your money back, they only issue credits. So if you think “I guess I will use it, because I can’t get my money back” , you have to set a calendar notification for the day before it is set to renew in order to turn it off. Otherwise, the only answer is to downgrade the subscription so that it doesn’t renew. If you choose to downgrade, you will lose all of your account benefits and a Proton credit will be issued (not a real credit where the charges are reversed). So your choice is to downgrade and lose your money or set a calendar reminder just prior to the renewal date so that you can shut it off.

Excellent all the way around. Though there are some features missing from more traditional email applications (e.g., auto-reply, calendar integration, read receipts, pins, etc.) it handles the main concerns and uses very well. Encryption is great, though still needs a bit of growing to handle end-to-end encryption of the subject line and email addresses which is currently encrypted, but not end-to-end. I have had no issues with emails coming or going, and the app works smoothly with current functions. Having the ability to quickly encrypt emails to non-proton users is also great. While there are plenty of free services out there, they are free for a reason. With Protons’ new pricing plan, one can get the VPN, email, drive, and calendar services all under one price which is seriously worth it to me for the privacy. These apps really help to take control of your data and take control of your online presence. While I understand people who believe they have nothing to hide from bots and “anonymized” data collection, there is a really big difference between a company loosing fully encrypted data the company cannot even access, and data transmitted encrypted but stored on company data services unencrypted. Companies pay ALOT of money for granular data to target people with specific advertisements, so understand for these free services that the user is the product. Please keep up the good work, people rely on these services.

love it but needs a hi overhaul. I just want to start out by saying I am a huge fan of proton mail and what their doing and have no doubt that they are currently working on a new ui for this app but as it is now it does feel a bit stale especially compared with the incredible job they have done with their website (stopped using my custom css it was so good) I loved that they let you choose what theme you wanted and everything so yeah 10/10 great product but it could use a new coat of paint and i’m sure the proton team is already behind that so yeah highly recommend because at the end of the day I use it for the privacy factor and the desktop version has a super clean ui and because I can feel confident proton will keep updating and improving it

Great email service, buggy iOS app. I’ve been on a paid plan for several months and highly recommend ProtonMail, the service, in general. It does what it’s supposed to do, and the privacy focus is first rate. However, this iOS app suffers from two defects— one an actual security risk if unnoticed by a user, and one merely annoying. The serious defect is in the PIN/TouchID feature to lock the app. I use the PIN option (leaving TouchID disabled) and it usually works well enough, but from time to time I’ll open the app and it immediately shows my Inbox without a PIN. I contacted ProtonMail support about this, and was asked if the problem occurred after an app update. I couldn’t determine that, as I have my phone set to auto-update apps. The only workaround is to logout of the app entirely. My other apps with PIN lock features have maintained that setting for years, across major app upgrades. The annoying defect, as others have noted, is the lack of notification synchronization across devices with ProtonMail apps logged into the same account. If I read a new email message on one device, the badge on the other device’s app icon still indicates the unread message. This is by no means a deal breaker, but it should be fixed for a polished experience.

Proton great but... I love proton services and all that they do, especially in these days. I use other proton services and use proton mail online which is very nice. Regarding this app, it’s just OK. Not like the online service but OK. I would give proton five stars but for this particular app I’m knocking a star, I would actually knock more stars off but I realize that this mail app is in it’s just beginning form. My big issue is that I am visually impaired and it’s extremely difficult to see what’s on the screen because the Mail app uses tiny fonts. Plus it does not follow my iPads fonts settings. It’s stuck on its own tiny tiny fonts. So it makes it very difficult for people with visual issues to see. I just do not get why designers programmers default to such tiny fonts. They must be designing these apps on their phones. Plus this app seriously needs a dark mode. Hopefully all these will eventually be done and then I can rave about yet another proton app.

Excellent email service, private and secure. If you value security and privacy use ProtonMail. Even the free accounts are private and secure. They do not sell your information or scan your emails for keywords to send ads. I have both a free account and a paid account and they both work great. I have been using protonmail for a few years now and I love it. The app features are fine. It has all the necessary features plus security and privacy. Some people are too picky they want an app that covers everything and I don’t think there is an e-mail app that has every feature and still keep you info private and secure. I’ve read some of the reviews, and I have not had any issue with crashes or glitches. Some reviews don’t sound like they are about this app. Not sure what some people are doing.

Secure but not as efficient as I’d like. I appreciate having secure email that values my privacy. As such I upgraded to the paid version and installed the bridge so I could sync it with outlook on my desktop (this feature is not yet available for mobile but we are told it’s under development). The purpose of this review is to request some simple features that would improve efficiency. I would like the ability to click on a folder marked Unread as a way to filter these emails and find them more quickly. Also I have seen screenshots at review sites that showed an email preview but haven’t been able to configure a preview of email while viewing the list of all emails. It’s a much faster way of skimming through all the emails we get deluged with daily. Was this feature lost inadvertently during a prior update?

Egyptian gibberish. If this app has taught me anything is you cannot trust an encrypted email services or app to keep your most valuable emails safe from malware or viruses! I paid $60 for a encrypted email for all my memories I can never replace ••their answer is you changed you passwords too much! Well that’s kinda impossible bc I write them down, so I don’t use the same password on any app! Today I received an email•••telling me to set my account, by using an old password, to put my app in recovery mode!!!! Which is it??? Proton email your app failed to decrypt my emails transferred from my gmail to folders, and now unless you are an Egyptian archeologist you can’t read your most valuable and trusted emails! DO NOT BUY THIS APP! You will lose your most valuable, treasured memories, only to have customer support blame you!! You want a good encrypted email service, use Tutanota encrypted emails!! Save your money, they will deflect and tell you it’s your fault, and then request you complete putting your accounts into account recovery by going online to change your password! It’s a joke!! Absolutely no help, Customer service is a joke, save yourself $60 and buy Tutanota email services! Absolutely no encryption errors and it’s free! Hope my review saves you money and headaches! Peace, love, and safety from an app that loves to blame customers for their failures!!✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

Can No Longer Recommend. I recommended this app/service—to many of my friends, based on its public stated credo and no longer can—having done so to THE NICEST PERSON I KNOW—she contacted me saying she—terminated her account with “protonmail” and opened another—and was IMMEDIATELY sent a message (mansplaining) internet ABUSE and that “protonmail” may terminate her account (she did this trying to get an address similar to the one she was replacing from another service). This is on the same day that her long standing email was high-jacked and all her contacts and mail deleted and sent scam spam (hundreds of friends and colleagues received emails—myself included). I recommended protonmail trying to give her a positive approach to a catastrophic occurrence. It’s one thing to only allow one free account-it’s another to not allow an individual to change it (which might be done for a myriad of reason). This ironically occurred on the same day that I was going to subscribe and donate (despite the all too apparent lack of diversity on their team—one token women which explains the heavy handed tone in a first email to a new client). If this is how they communicate with new clients I’m glad I didn’t get in any deeper with them. Like most tech companies they are only great when everything is working, but woe to the person who has an issue and expects to be treated both civilly and as an individual.

Great basic email app. I moved my custom domain from GSuite to ProtonMail mostly due to privacy and security concerns. ProtonMail as a service is solid and reliable. I love it so far. The ProtonMail iOS app (as of the time of this review) is a bit sparse in terms of features, but it’s reliable and I haven’t had any issues. ProtonMail is a solid option for those looking to take their data protection seriously. Currently, the app is lacking some basic features that I’ve come to expect from a typical email app. For example, a calendar (which the team is currently working on), dark mode, and the ability to switch between multiple accounts without having to log in and out. I look forward to when the team finally to rolls out some of these quality of life features.

Decent product. Awful company.. The product is nice enough, but the way Proton operates is deceptive and borders on fraud. The fact that subscriptions auto renew is buried in the TOS. The the payment screens on the website don’t mention this, and don’t even link to the ToS. I have an account that I have not used in 4 years. They took the money to reactivate my account, but won’t let me log in unless I first pay the 4 years of invoices. There were no renewal or overdue email notifications, and they lock your account after your account is 30 days overdue. So basically Proton I insists on payment for 4 years in which they did not render a service. Support was entirely useless and and just replied with a copy paste response about the TOS. — Reply to dev‘s response: Your support team has wasted enough of my time over that past week. My trust in your company and product is irreparably damaged. Also did you seriously just ask me post my support ticket number in a public review on the App Store? What an epic OpSec fail for a supposedly SeCuREtY / PrIvAcY focused company.

Almost everything I need. I've been a paid subscriber for a while and this app works almost perfectly with the following exceptions: 1. No option for threaded view of messages (something that the web app does support and is sorely missed here) 2. Sometimes the inbox doesn't refresh automatically when a new email notification is triggered. I.e., I'll get a notification of a new mail, tap the notification to check it, open the app, and see no new emails in the inbox. I'll have to manually refresh to see it. 3. After refreshing the inbox to see new mail as in #2, tapping the new message to read it doesn't work for a moment or two. I usually ends up tapping two or three times in my impatience 4. This one is not specific to the app, but the service. It's not clear how much of my data is stored with zero-access encryption. It seems that the contents of emails are, but that senders/recipients and subject lines aren't. When I use the search feature in the web app, my search query is sent to the API and it returns a list of messages with subjects or senders that match my query. If the API can search that data, then it must not be zero-access encrypted. This was a bit surprising to me. I'd like to see these details spelled out more explicitly.

Still no email threads????. ProtonMail is the only email client I’ve used that doesn’t have an option to thread emails of the same subject and/or from the same sender. If you’re having a conversation with someone and want to find a precious message, you have to scroll through ALL of your inbox and manually search for the email. If you receive frequent emails on the same subject, like updates on a specific forum, your inbox will be flooded. Instead of having one email chain, you’ll have dozens of emails of the same subject and from the same sender crowding up your inbox. And it will be difficult to pick out any important emails. It’s ridiculous that the ProtonMail developers haven’t fixed this problem. Even tiny obscure email clients with a single developer have better UI, and they at least respond to complaints. ProtonMail is clearly not interested in addressing the problem. Update May 2021: I originally wrote this review about a year ago, and I received a response that email grouping was in the works and would be implemented in a future update. Well, a year later, ProtonMail still doesn’t have the very basic, essential feature that every other mail service has. The word “feature” doesn’t even sound right. Is grouping text messages by contact really a “feature” on my iPhone? No, it’s expected. There’s not a phone on the market where you have to scroll through all of your text messages to pick out individual replies to read a conversation with someone.

Non-Techies Should Steer Clear. Protonmail is great, until there's a problem. If you're not savvy about encryption and such, it can be daunting, especially since the fix options they provide may not work for you, may even make things worse. It happened to me. Customer support does respond, and seems to care, but problems don't necessarily go away. Their suggestions aren't helpful when they keep recommending things that have already been explained to them more than once can't be done, for various reasons, like using a previous password when I didn't have one, even though they have copies of earlier correspondence from writing back and forth about the issue. Some suggestions don't make sense. For example, I was having trouble with their iPhone app; so, they want me to do something with nonexistent files on my computer's hard drive???

Service is great; app needs creature comforts. All in all, I love Protonmail. I appreciate their mission to promote encryption and secure services through email and how they value privacy over all else. I’ve been a user for a professional email account for over 2 years and it’s rare that I’ve had any problems with the iOS app or the web app. When I do have problems, it’s usually relatively easy to report them and get them fixed in an update. One thing that I would appreciate, however, is some more perks and creature comforts associated with the iOS app. For example, the ability to schedule emails would be great. Equally, I’d love it if notifications synced between devices. I understand that Protonmail’s main focus is security and privacy (which I wholeheartedly appreciate) but it’d be great if they could compete a bit more with services like Gmail or Outlook.

My new primary email service. After using Gmail since it was invite only way back in the mid-2000s, it was time for a change. My private emails should not be subject to scans that serve me ads and do who knows what with my data. I had a free ProtonMail account for several years but finally went all in. I purchased a paid plan, decided to setup my own custom domain, and have migrated all of my “critical” email over to ProtonMail and I won’t be looking back! The redesigned Mail app has significantly improved the end-user experience and added a lot of features that were lacking in the original app. It’s easy to use, intuitive and you certainly don’t need a degree in Computer Science to understand how it works. On the few occasions where I’ve needed to reach out to them for support, their reps were always friendly and helpful. I’m excited to see them expand their product offerings into things like cloud storage, VPN and calendar.

Excellent Service Great For Privacy!. I am a ProtonPlus paid user, I started with a free account but I actually paid 2 years in advance I like it so much. I really am not cool with advertisers having the ability to read my emails which often contain much personal info. The ONLY reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 (which is not really protons fault) is because there are some companies that will either not accept your email address from proton or some online stores that will cancel your order when you give them as your email. It has only happened a couple times so far. I’m pretty sure the reason they don’t accept is because they are assuming your are some kind of criminal or scammer because you have a private email. When in actuality it’s because people are starting to realize what are huge problem we are facing with these tech companies knowing every detail of our life and mind. Anyways I’m hoping as more people start to use Proton, the stigma will be erased. Also if you notify proton of this they contact the company that is denying your email. Other than that it’s great! Some great features for filtering your emails into different folders too

Protonmail good; app not so much. I like proton mail except for the silly “All Mail” box which seems to store things I thought I deleted. The app doesn’t allow you to bcc yourself on all messages automatically which is something I started doing a while ago. So I find it annoying. So when I try to clear out my inbox and clear out all mail, I delete my sent messages that I hadn’t filed and lose all record unless I filed a response to the message I sent. I can learn new habits I suppose, but I wish the app allowed me to say I always want to bcc or cc myself. PS: the developer responded to my silly “all mail” comment. They like the box. But here is the issue. I use thunderbird. I go in and delete all junk and trash. However those messages stay in the all mail box. To get rid of them altogether, I have to delete the messages in the all mail box. But when I do that, it deletes all my sent messages. So deletion works one way from trash and junk but two ways from sent mail.

Great service, lacking a few features to make it a home run. ProtonMail is an excellent service for both the privacy conscious and the masses. The reason so many email providers are free is because it the provider is in a privileged position to scan all of your emails. ProtonMail sets itself apart from the rest, and doesn’t read your email, or store it in a format that they can access. I would highly recommend a paid plan, even if you don’t need any paid features. Pay for your usage with your money, not your data. However, the absence of one feature makes the ProtonMail experience painful (-1 star): No notification dismissal syncing. If I read an email on my iPad, it will still show the notification on my phone until I open the app. Almost every other mail/chat app has notification dismissal syncing, but when I asked ProtonMail about implementing this feature, they said it was not possible. If they found a way to add this feature (and it’s possible considering other services can do it), then this service would be a true 5 stars.

A couple Issues. The app works pretty well but I’ve run into two issues: 1) No offline access -not sure if this is a security thing or to keep storage use low, but I can’t seem to access any email if I’m not connected to the internet, even if it’s just a text-based message or I’d opened it a few minutes before. 2) Password Protection/Touch ID glitch: You can secure access to the app by requiring a custom PIN or TouchID entry to open it. I set it to accept both, however the app keeps spamming the touchID prompt, effectively making it impossible to enter the PIN. When you dismiss the TouchID option, it immediately pops back up. Can’t confirm if later model iphones have the FaceID option for the app and if this glitch exists for that method as well. Developers: please address these issues!

Underestimated this App. Initially, I downloaded this application for sending contracts and sensitive financial data, but I have completely converted over. I’ve used Spark for years, and Airmail as well, so I was used to over-the-top features and loads of automated mailboxes and various pins, flags, etc. Proton is simplistic and minimalist in aesthetic, and when you first start toying with it, it may seem a bit underwhelming. HOWEVER, once you create some labels and folders, link your business email and all the normal “set-up” that goes along with adopting a new application, its simplicity is its strongest advantage. No more do I feel overwhelmed and under informed by what is in my mailbox. I don’t feel like I need to spend all this time setting up automations and remembering color codes (because Proton uses WORDS+COLORS! Simple thing, yet so helpful). Overall, it’s just streamlined my workflow, taken away the clutter, and simplified my mailbox life. Something I was in desperate need of! Try it, give it a chance, and I promise you won’t regret it.

New version is lousy!. They should add a way to rearrange the order of e-mails. From newest (in top) to oldest (at the bottom). And they should make it easier to find the setting to ungroup e-mails. They call it “conversation setting,” pretty much other providers call it “group setting.” I find Proton to be very expensive compared to other private e-mail services. Proton starts at 52 dollars per year right now. Compare that to Tutanota which is a great service for only 13 and change dollars per year. Tutanota is based in Germany and they take privacy serious. With end to end encryption and even a free encrypted calendar. For the price of one Proton basic account I could have four at Tutanota. I don't work for Tutanota or benefit from anyone switching over. I am just a person who is tired of companies milking me for evey penny they can to fatten their greed wallets why not providing a service that is not or not much better than others that cost less.

Account renewal issues and slow support. I wasn’t using proton mail and forgot to disable auto renew. I noticed the renewal charge for another 12 months on my statement so I reached out to proton mail and requested to close the account and refund the recent charge (times are tough). Two weeks later no support other than auto responses from Zendesk. No human response. I Reached out to Amex and created a dispute in order to get some support and refund the charge. Proton then locked my account access because I reached out through Amex. I’m sure the thin veneer to justify is “account security” despite them failing to recognise the open support ticket requesting a refund and now Amex requesting the same. They insist that I “am a user” of their service since because I logged in after the renewal date, which was only to check and ensure what I had already turned off was in fact turned off (auto renew) and to contact support to request a refund, I am an active user - see, the logs prove our logic. I’m sure their is a BS definition of “a user” in their TOS - super, great support PM. Now I am locked out of the PM account and have paid for 12months for a service I do not want to Nir have used. Such a waste of time this is and typical of faceless technology companies. If we interacted face to face im sure your support would be different. What should be a simple matter is now a multi touch point matter. What a waste of my time.

Thankful for new UI. Now I’m smart with my security and have a smart looking interface. Long overdue, but really happy now that it’s here. Keep this experience coming across your services (calendar next?).

Amazing. I check my emails every morning. The service is confidential and reliable.

Great app on iPhone, could be better on iPad 12.9. A layout option that keeps the sidebar visible on the larger iPad would be great to make better use of the available space. Otherwise great app and love the redesign!

Really good. Guys, really love the mail service, can’t fault it at all. My only negative comments, the iOS app could really use an option to go to the next email when you’ve got one open and the ability to mark all your spam as read without having to open each and every email. Keep up the great work 😊

I like recent release. Recent release was great one which fix lots bugs and issues. Long time waiting though... There are lots more areas for pronton team to working on and make APP even better. I'll keep my subscription service as small piece of support.

ProtonMail app. Great app, I haven’t had any issues with it. I appreciate that I’m not being snooped on and having data from digital receipts etc stolen like other common email providers do. Would love to see a feature where you can block emoji’s from appearing in the subject line.

WHEN ARE CONVERSATIONS COMING? Love PM still. GUYS WHEN ARE CONVERSATIONS COMING? ITS BEEN YEARS! PLEASE! Have been using the app for 3+ years now, love ProtonMail overall. Back then we were told the threaded conversations feature would be coming soon in the app. But it’s now been years and this is still not implemented - this is a basic feature and the app should have that, it makes reading emails a real pain and archiving not practical. When will this be addressed?

Love Proton Mail!. I find PM a breath of fresh air, used as paid subscription for several years and it just keeps improving, BIG thanks!

Great Email Service. I love ProtonMail! The privacy and security is awesome and I use my Yubikey as the Authenticator via the Yubikey App which adds an additional level of safety. The ProtonMail app is functional if not aesthetically pleasing ... but ultimately I don’t care if it’s not pretty...

Needs better appearance options. I like the security of ProtonMail, but the lack of appearance options is really annoying. Add features to allow a more customized look in the app and it will take off. As someone who has switched over from gmail the app looks bland and difficult to navigate like communist Russia that I grew up in. Please sort this ASAP as it is not functional to people who run business and deal with a lot of emails daily.

End-to End Encryption Far From ‘Five Eyes’. This is the way to go! Full end-to-end encryption brought to you by scientists from CERN and based in Switzerland, where strong privacy laws reign, far from the clutches of Anglophone intelligence snooping. The free plan works great and there are still many good email addresses available as the userbase is still relatively small (while growing fast). I recommend upgrading to one of the very inexpensive paid plans to get more bells and whistles, and to aid the growth and development of this ambitious project which aims to bring truly private email to the world!

Performance issues. I like proton’s services and have been using them for a while now. UI+UX also deserve praise. However, the mail client in particular, has been demonstrating constant performance issues as of late. Notifications aren’t always prompt and when they are, it fails to load updated inbox content until the app is restarted. Sometimes, it fails to connect at all until restart, even when all other apps have been connecting just fine.

BE WARNED - using Protonmail can pose serious risks. I have successfully used protonmail for some time until recently; however even if you record your written password and later enter the password having a transcription error -Protonmail will lock you out of your account on the grounds you the account holder being viewed as a hacker , or robot ! Trying log back into your account is guaranteed to be made a nightmare and almost impossible as no matter what - you the paid account holder is not viewed as legitimate subscriber. Never put all ‘your eggs in one basket’ when it comes to protonmail as once you lose access all your important email records are lost as well as you money .Protonmail can ruin your life as constantly viewing you the account holder as a hacker , and no endeavour by subscriber is considered by protonmail in helping you to reestablish login acces to your to your paid account .

Can’t Login Anymore. Was an okay app. However since the latest update I’ve been unable to login. I just get an error stating that the data is in an incorrect format. I can log in fine from the website and can use it fine on my iPad which has an older version of the app, so I know my credentials are correct.

Text too small. Why can’t you let us make the text larger? It’s beyond ridiculous how tiny the text is by default compared to every other mail client in the world.

BY-PASS EMAIL CENSORSHIP. With 4000+bit encryption there is no way people can censor your emails like Microsoft or Telstra have been doing to me. I started sending emails with photos of Celestial anomalies and straight away attracted the attention of the Authorities who weren’t happy with that and so sent my emails and deleted the pictures in transit to their destination. I don’t know if the recipient can open this email that is encrypted with password if they don’t use PRONTON mail...but lets hope it by-passes censorship!!

This is My main email in Aust, cannot fault it!. I run a couple emails incl. the offerings from GL and MS but this is my main email. It is reliable; I appreciate having aliases to keep my main email somewhat protected, and I’ve recently switch to using the Proton VPN after my other VPN stopped working in Aust. Highly recommended !

Love this and everything is stands for but. I’ve stopped receiving notifications which is a very crucial feature. Tried everything in the website. Not sure what to do now

Problem sending message. I’m not able to send a message from iOS/iPadOS device. I’m getting “Message sending failed. Pleas try again.: can’t decrypt message body” error. I tried logging out, deleting cache and reinstalling the app. Deal breaker for me, starting to look for a different mail provider.

Simply Awesome and Secure. I have been a paid Protonmail user since before there was any such thing as an App. When you had to access via the website. I migrated from MS Exchange to Protonmail and absolutely love it. I have used many different mail platforms and I must say Protonmail is by far superior in functionality and security. I do hope they continue providing this awesome service and continue developing their VPN and other services too.

Privacy at the expense of user experience. This app has a long way to go from a user experience stand point. Reply and forward buttons are hard to find. Adding attachments fails frequently. Deleted emails still appear in list.

Love the security/ privacy. The app is easy to navigate and beats logging into the web portal. Happy to be a paid user and not pay others with my data.

Not user friendly. Can’t “select all” and delete. Have to delete each email in inbox individually. Very time consuming when your inbox is full of rubbish.

Reliability is zero. Shockingly, I could not log into app, tried dozens of times over many days copying and pasting password from pw manager. Tried website via browser as a last resort and was able to login. Then tried the app again and was able to login. However, this is an indication of how unreliable this service is. There is no guarantee you will ever be able to access your emails again. A 'secure' service that leaves me insecure?

It's okay. Generally good. However, it has been plagued by a bug that applies swipe actions to the wrong message. This has been present for months, and despite supposed fixes it is still a constant annoyance.

Good secure email provider and iOS app. I am quite impressed by the security features of the ProtonMail service, and the ability to apply these to a custom domain if you pay for a subscription. The usability is also really good. The import wizard lets you bring your mail and contacts with you and works really well. Once imported I’ve found the search function far superior to both the built in iOS mail app and Outlook connected to an IMAP account.

Reliable. It works every time. Highly recommended.

Solution for me. Moving away from free services, ProtonMail (and Suite) works fine. Being secured and reliable is all I need.

privacy and ownership. so the app has vulns, perhaps it’s just PM’s ownership now, which isn’t Swiss. at all. It’s relatively functional so long as you don’t need your work to be confidential. Journos may want to look a bit further for encrypted, private email apps than this 1, which seems to be riding on its original reputation. btw, I would not go near PM’s accompanying VPN with a 40-foot bargepole. Webmail is still best idea for PM users.

Finally an update to the ancient app that makes it modern!. Two key things to fix please! When archiving with swipe for a thread, it frequently glitches with a couple of archive messages, and the message staying visible for a few seconds after the message. Also, there is no single button press to archive a message while reading! Isn’t this a really common workflow, to open an email, read it, and press archive? Very frustrating. Overall though, the new app is a major improvement, well done.

Disappointed. I’m currently overseas and my yearly subscription didn’t go through because my money situation is tight so I have paid for a month subscription and I cannot access my emails on proton where my flight tickets are to return home I think proton mail is a bad choice if you surrender your safety to then they can control your safety

Do not use - after 4 years I have realised my mistake. I have been a paying customer of ProtonMail for over 4 years. I will now be leaving them due to dreadful customer service and blocking me from accessing my personal data. Although user interface is not as good as Google / Outlook I was generally happy with the product and felt that the security & privacy justifies the price. However, when my premium subscription automatically renewed in 2022 and unfortunately I was unable to verify payment with my bank due to travel restrictions, rather than remove premium features and shift me to a “free” account.. they have blocked me entirely from the platform and left me unable to access years of personal documents and emails. They are trying to extort me to pay money for a premium service that I have been blocked from using. Proton Mail treatment of a long term paying customer has been incredibly disappointing, and I would strongly encourage you to consider other email hosts.

Much improved. This last update has significantly improved the app. Interactions are fluid and stable. Haven’t noticed any glitches swiping away, replying or reading messages. Can’t wait to see the new UI though. Single pane view on the iPad Pro is still a bit odd.

Select all option. Hi, can you please add a select all option inside trash folder, also whenever I delete an email it still shows in ALL MAIL folder which is 😕.

Latest update is a disaster. I can’t access my mailbox without a persistent orange ‘timed out’ message banner. When the emails finally show, I can’t open them and get a blank page. Content of sub-folders has completely disappeared. Am beside myself. Please fix….have lost valuable content.

Half Bug. Some messages are abruptly cut in half, with the images and text not loading beyond the screen parameters when the message is first opened, i.e. scrolling down the page reveals that the rest of the screen is blank

Good but tapping out emails can be sluggish. Just moved business email across. Really like Proton mail for dedicated email & security, but have noticed when composing emails with the iPhone app that tapping out a message encounters some lag at times. — Developer: thank you — will try that! — What would also be good would be the ability to ARCHIVE an email when it’s open, with a single click from the bottom of the screen. At the moment you must tap the 3 dots and ‘move to archive’. You can also swipe right from the list, but a single tap archive button from within an email is very handy :)

Unusable on iPhone 13 Pro. With the latest update, the UI has become very unresponsive. It takes about a minute before I can start scrolling through my inbox. Then I scroll about half a page down and it freezes again.

A lot better than most free emails. I normally go by the amount of reviews apps have to judge, but so far an not a complaint from me an I’ve tried many emails, thanksalot

Please add 20 seconds recall Button.. 1. Please add 20 seconds recall Button, when I double check my just sent E-Mail. I made a few typos. Now this ONLY available on web version. Please bring to App. 2. Please add 5 seconds auto save function. I tried to edit draft on protonmail across different Devices. Too hard. Always overwrote my new draft with old one. I have to use Google Doc again.

Can be clunky. Seems to timeout a lot and had a larger than expected delay between hitting send and the email sending. No doubt this is a byproduct of the encryption, however this has resulted in mails being sent greatly delayed as I’ve closed the app before it completed sending. Having said that ProtonMail raises the bar when it comes to accessible mail security.

Great encrypted email service but free plan should have bigger storage. I’ve missed out on the free upgrade 1GB offer and I’m very disappointed. I completed the 4 tasks on 20th of January, was I too late? Please give free users another chance to upgrade 500MB to 1GB sometime in the future or how about let us buy more storage. I would happily buy to add storage, I’m willing to do one time purchases than subscription.

I just sent your support a message. There is something very weird and suspicious going on with your app and the actual way it’s acting like it’s ready to be deleted or something like that with a - like this beside it just like when you are deleting apps on your phone

Encrypted but primitive. The good: secure end-to-end encrypted email. Pay a modest fee for all the features (or pay google with your private data). The bad: ancient iOS app interface and a developer who does not appear to be listening to users - majority of feature requests have been in the queue for *years*, with no progress. Basic email filtering (read/unread); threaded conversation view, snooze or flag emails, to name but a few. Poor show.

Email attachments cannot it be found?. I’m tearing my hair out with this email system. I paid for extra data bc the free version doesn’t provide enough. If you hv a string of emails on the same topic, & there are different attachments over time, it’s almost impossible to find the latest attachment - or any for that matter!! Such a basic requirement in an email system. I’ve gone to chats abt this & also searched reddit without an answer or solution. It’s a thing. Many are discussing this???

Don’t bother.. Encrypted email sounds cool and all, until you realise you can’t forward emails if you wish to change providers. Also, this app is awfully designed. Unless you work for CSIRO or some other research body where you need to keep communications safe from corporate espionage, there is absolutely no reason to put up with this app’s awful UI.

Briliiant as usual w/ room to improve. I can see myself as a paid customer for years to come. The app, however, can be improved more. 1. Delete email directly from notification center. (NVM if ios doesn’t allow this), it is extremely annoying to delete email I don’t need to read. 2. Faster loading speed (NVM if its a encryption problem, the current speed is still decent) 3. Dark Mode, please? 4. Swipe (gesture) AGAIN to UN-mark emails. 5. Custom notification ringtone for different folders, sender etc. Rather than default Apple all the way.

How email should be. Thanks to the Protonmail team for continually working so hard on improving its service! Releasing the iOS app and now providing the ability to use the Mail application on MacOS have made it so easy to keep my inbox private and secure. All emails should be kept private and thanks again for championing this cause.

Encryption, data protection and security. Its a must have app for anyone who wants to have their own data in their control. The new app UI is very easy to use and more secure with the protondrive. Kudos to the team for thriving continuously to make the app better and more secure every single day.

Needs proton calendar for iOS. Amazing app but when are we going to start seeing the integration of the proton drive and proton calendar into the iOS platforms?

Subscribe is not worth it.. More free stuff please. Or one time purchase. Does anybody actually pay monthly for subscriptions to an app?? What a waste of money. Subscribe to any app is such a scam. Unless it providing new media like Spotify or Netflix why the hell would a monthly payment be a good idea???

Best alternative to Google. Privacy forward company making outstanding products. Make the switch.

Works.... but. This is a fine app, but they need to include an option to choose all email and allow users to mark them as read.

They don’t fix anything....ever! Update: Pure garbage, look elsewhere for reliable email!. Update: Jan 2023 — it is useless now with each and every new update. It crashes alllll the time or takes fooooorrreevverrrr to load each and every email, particularly any email with an image and always with more than one image (so like every email you’ll ever get, as this isn’t the 90’s!!)...if they even load, or even load more than just the top tiny portion...and then crash again! Some email lists I’m signed up with I’ll never again see as they should be because PM blocks images from loading and you can’t shut off the “feature” on the app. Absolutely none of the previous issues from several years are fixed, and as frequently stated, they keep adding newer “features” that just make PM a bag of $#!¥! You can’t have Proton VPN on at the same time or good luck even getting a single email open and loaded. And of course telling support back when the crashing was added to the mix of nonstop issues several updates back, their response was that they’d get around to fixing it in a future update. And their initial support was to say to update to the newest version after I’d already stated it was acting like that with the newest update! Do they not actually read anything and just go in thinking you’re a raging moron, when really it just makes them look like raging morons??! And so, as usual, no “fixes” have happened yet and it’s already been several months and updates later with nothing to show for it, but worse and worse functioning. But again they NEVER fix anything they break, so just find a more reliable email provider and save yourself A TON of time and stress!! Be thankful you don’t have to figure out how to migrate everything away from them because migrating to them was broken as well! Response to Developer’s most recent response: Hahahah that’s so laughable! You are not working hard at fixing jack! I’ve contacted Report a Bug MANY, many times over several years, to which your support people are even more laughable. They do not care, as I outlined originally! They’ve not fixed a single thing, especially the sending/receiving issues. Update: After 3 or so recent updates, the app continues to crash frequently, boots you out, so you have to sign in again. And absolutely nothing from the previous review has been fixed to date with the app, at least for Apple!!! They keep creating new features that don’t work, and instead of fixing everything else. Beware because more and more places don’t seem to accept Proton Mail so your emails won’t get through and contact pages will send your inquiries to their junk mail or block you altogether! Previous Review: I’ve told them how with the new overhaul is incredibly easy to accidentally Unsubscribe from your email lists based on the stupid location they put the button (more like a bar across the top of your email, right under the contact info), no confirm Unsubscribe, nothing!!! Some you’ll know about because the odd email list will email you one last time to confirm, and many you won’t know about. They don’t care!! The screen constantly flashes when you go to respond or compose an email also. Many emails, in the new thread or not, when you open won’t show the actual message, and some take time to appear, while others you have to hit Reply (whether you were going to or not) in order to see what was written!! WTH?! Sudden inundation of Spam mail that you CAN’T delete at all in the app version. They know about it, but I see haven’t even bothered to fix it for the newest update. They tell you to go sign in online and delete it from there. I rarely ever go Spam before and now don’t know why now. Etc. But then they’ve never cared about all of the issues, as there are maaaaannnnnnyyyyy things that still don’t work or were never fixed. The primary one that is serious is not receiving emails from people or lists that are in your White list. They randomly get blocked somehow or can’t get through for long periods of time. I’ve tried resigning up to some lists to see if that works, but nope, or it’ll let one email through and then never again!! The same goes for emailing out, where less randomly people don’t receive your emails at all. Also, using contact forms on websites and leaving your email addy usually means you’ll never hear back. It’s like PM is blocked and blocks its users from receiving and sending email...the purpose of it. Could be awesome if it worked and didn’t create nightmares.

Fantastic, worth every penny as time goes on. Yes, Protonmail is not cheap. But I believe in their mission. I’m happy to support their fight for privacy by default by paying for their services. Additionally, new products are being added over time. With ProtonVPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar, this is a great replacement for the Gmail suite. I would like to see an online Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editor too in the future. Additionally, a family plan would be great where existing protonmail users can be brought together under one plan. Currently there is no option to do this. So please if you could add this option, that would help see higher adoption rate for your fantastic services! Cheers!

It’s dead Jim. Since last update I can’t open the app on iphone or Ipad

Set up impossible. Keeps cycling to verification. Waste of time

I got the code but.... When I was at the point for the verification code, I got the code, and I typed it in and it kept telling me it was wrong, then it disabled me and won’t let me back on. Oh and I want a nickname of my choice, I don’t care if someone else has the same one!

Notifications not working properly since iOS 15. Surprise when you click on the app and find new unread emails. No badges, no banners and everything on the users end set correctly for notifications to appear. Sent a bug report, they said they know about it, and months later, no fix.

Lost all of my emails. In the process of de googling myself, I turned to proton mail. The free version worked so well that I ended up paying for 2 years as well as getting Proton VPN. Unfortunately, two days ago, I lost all of my important emails, the ones I brought over from other services. I was prompted to log into the beta version after downloading that, and once I logged back in, all of my messages disappeared. Now, all of my recovery codes, including financial information, is gone from my inbox. After trying all avenues, I reached out to support, and still waiting for a resolution, 3 days in. Ticket number 592823

Answering back an email sends pictures or attachment you received again, even if you delete them. No setting where to avoid it. Any mail app has a setting where automatically you don’t send back MB of photos again. Is it so hard to add it 😖? Please!

Help my eyes please. I would love it if you could make the text of the email title and the sender’s identity larger. I can read without glasses for hours but seeing the senders identity is very difficult, with or without glasses. To some extent, 50% of the population has eye issues. Otherwise I like protonmail.

Painfully slow and crashes. This app used to be great a year ago. Now: Takes 10-15 seconds from loading the app to being able to see any mail in the inbox. I used to use the app to send myself emails as a way to take notes, but now this crashes the app. Also whenever I’m writing an email longer than a few paragraphs, the longer I write, the keyboard takes longer and longer to respond, until it ultimately stops altogether - so I have to write emails in the note app first and then copy and paste. It can’t be easy to develop a great app, unfortunately Protonmail on iOS went from great to barely useable on my phone. (iPhone XR)

Same issue. Crashing in iPhone. Working fine until recently. Now it doesn’t work in my iPhone at all

App crashing on all iOS devices. App does not work on iPhone 14 Pro nor iPad, Pro 11 and I have Protonmail Plus. It crashes within a few clicks in. Tried restarting the devices but it doesn’t do anything.

Deactivated accounts. I thought this was a secure email domain. It turns out that if youre not a paying customer they will deactivate your account if you have not entered your password within 3 months, and with no notice. Even if you access it frequently, they will deactivate your email. Also will deactivate your email if you have more than one free email. Protonmail is probably a great email service if you pay. WARNING DO NOT USE FREE SERVICE!!! Ps I was going to upgrade, and pay for VPN and dual account subscription after trying it out, but then I couldn't as they had deactivated my email...never did I think this was possible, and I sent my most important mail to is now GONE!!

Redesign. I’ll come back to this review in a week because it deserves a second chance but right off the hop I’m not enjoying this update. It feels like we went from a functional mail app that didn’t need a redesign to something that looks like it was designed for looks with bad tastes and not functionality. There’s a reason why the stock iOS email app is the most popular, you don’t see apple trying to redesign the email app.. you should take note. Now I’m faced with trying to deal with this new ugly design or consider moving apps. You guys could of at least left the old style as an option.. not happy.

The WORST customer support!. Wrote 4 emails in the course of a week and not a single response. Only till I closed my paid account and moved to a competitor did they finally respond to my LIST of issues offering me a discount. If you have a business to run and need support ASAP, be aware.

Loving ProtonMail. The interface is crisp and clean. Please don’t ever change it!

Price too high. I trust Proton and it is a good product but refuse to pay $84 Canadian for email service. Keep looking for alternative.

Love protonmail. I have been using protonmail for years and I love it. It’s a great service that I don’t have to worry is being collected for google’s revenue algorithms. However, something in the latest iOS app is causing noticable lag (noticed during typing emails and when trashing/archiving emails via swipe). I’m on iOS 17 with an iphone 13 mini, and I was also having this issue for a little while when still on iOS 16. I hope it’s fixed soon. The in-browser interface is working just fine.

So many glitches. I get a new email, open it, exit it, and it still shows as unread in my inbox. The iOS app takes forever or never syncs when I use Proton Mail in a new browser on my computer. I wish we would be able to view our emails while offline. The app is decently intuitive and dark mode is nice, but it’s just so annoying how glitchy the app is and how terrible notifications are. This is an ongoing issue that still is the case with iOS 17.

The new theme degrades the user experience.. I am a PRO version customer. the new force-imposed theme is awful, it's not ergonomic, and the usability is poor. The list of emails is unreadable. The user experience is very degraded with your new theme.

Crash on start fixed. Wow, after latest “redesign” update, now the app literally crashes back to home screen at startup. So now I cannot check emails. Amazing. I am guessing you no longer support iOS 12.5.5, but if that’s the case, you should have blocked the update for this iOS version but you didn’t. And of course there’s no way to roll back. Edit: crash on start fixed quickly thank you. I like the new design but there is no dark mode option like it says in the release notes. I guess it’s because the app is following the system-wide theme setting and doesn’t have its own dark mode option. Since there is no dark mode system setting in iOS 12 so the app is never in dark mode.

Hate new branding. Would continue using but your upgrade is terrible. Great new streamlined features I’m sure, but one major reason I chose your service was the dark and discrete look. Will be choosing a different service now due to this ugly purple and white look. So disappointed.

Browser clearly superior. I still find myself having to log in on a web browser to access certain features. Like all their ios apps, it feels bare bones. Then I get emails about all their updates and promotions. Tldr; it works. Not consistent with the original product

Very Impressed. I am very happy user of Proton. I’m very grateful a company like this exists. I feel well protected and that my best interested are at heart. The service it’s self runs great and easy to use. Highly recommend.

Totally broken highlighting in iOS. This app is totally screwed up on iPad. You cannot highlight a block of text for cutting, copying, or pasting because for some bizarre reason the screen jumps all over the place and you cannot scroll. Never seen such a basic function broken in an app before

Easy to use professional email platform. My only wish is an easier way to imbed photos on text rather than then being attachments at the end of the email.

Great app. Been trying to de-google and de-ms myself and I have mostly succeeded! (Now using proton for everything that I could remember), great alternative to google. The only thing holding me back from 5 star is the storage. I understand your not google sized and giving everyone 10GB would be expensive but it would be great. Thanks for existing proton!

Great so far!. I am a bit disappointed that I cant use the encrypted calendar on my phone app… really unfortunate. Otherwise this is just what I was looking for! Canada has a similar encrypted provider, Thexyz, but, apparently, Canada doesn’t have the best security/privacy laws.

J’aime pas la nouvelle mise à jour. Avant on pouvait remettre nos messages lus en messages non lus juste en glissant mais la on doit ouvrir le message et aller sur les trois petits points

Garbage. Maybe this app would get more use if it actually worked as intended. PROTONMAIL, FIX YOUR POS APP!

1 free email. What’s the point of allowing only 1 free email to be added to the app? It’s such a useless limitation. No other mailing app limits the number of emails you can add.

Love the App … but. It would be really nice to be able to BLOCK spam in the mobile app

Slow and lacking web app functionality. Takes too long to refresh the inbox on a fast internet connection. Almost impossible to use when you have patchy internet. Quite limited in functionality compared with the web app. This app has been around for a few years now with little apparent improvement, while the web app has come a long way. I suggest ProtonMail put some resources into improving the iOS app.

Not ready for prime time. Some UI elements freeze and don’t update until the app is forced to quit and restarts. It also fails to update messages frequently. Needs quite a bit of work.

Slow on load, doesn’t show emails for a long time. Recently the app takes forever to load and doesn’t show emails for a long time. You’ll need to force close the app numerous times or wait quite a while for the emails to actually show up. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Scrolling inbox. Swiping from email to email would be great

Lacks basic email client features. Still no conversation threading or dark mode after years. These features would take a few days at most to implement.

Uhhh can’t access my email!!. I just updated the app and now it crashes every time I try to open it! I have an important message I’m supposed to access right now… but now I can’t get to it!! What am I supposed to do?

sending to my pgp contacts unencrypted. Be seriously careful sending emails through this client. Currently messages I am sending to a non-ProtonMail PGP-enabled contact via iOS client are being sent *unencrypted*. They send encrypted on the web client without issue and without any special action on my part. In iOS client there is nothing in the UI that indicates to me whether the message will be sent encrypted or not. This is IMO a CRITICAL issue and totally inexcusable for a product that has been around this long. I will update my review if this shockingly terrible bug is resolved, though my trust in the service is massively challenged at this point and I’m considering canceling the 2 years of Pro I just paid for! (I have filed a support ticket for this issue)

No notifications from iPhone.. I get email notifications from Samsung phone, but not from my iPhone. Perhaps due to the fact that the emails are forwarded to a sub folder? Do you not provide notifications if emails go into sub folders? Please check.

By criminals, for criminals. Not safe

Encrypted Emails. I love the fact that this email service is encrypted. I’ve been using the free version for quite some time now. I finally bit the bullet and subscribed for a year. I was hoping that there would be a setting for font size, background colour choices, etc., but there wasn’t any. Don’t get me wrong, I love the plain look, but wouldn’t mind a little colour and being able to choose larger font for those of us who need it. I have recommended ProtonMail to my siblings and recommend it to whoever is reading this too.

Bugs in the app. we love Protonmail, but every time we open the app several times on our iPod, it bugs and only displays the proton logo. thank you for fixing this bug

No more trust after giving away IP address. After reading that you guys complied with Swiss laws and gave away that climate activist’s IP address to authorities, I can no longer place any trust with you guys and immediately and effectively removing your app.

Notifications are so bad. ProtonMail, what happened? I’ve been a paid subscriber for years but as of lately iOS 15, I have not received any notifications until I open the app. Then all of a sudden I have 11 unread emails from days prior. At first I thought it was app corruption so I logged out of my account, deleted the app and reinstalled but it’s still broken. I’ve been waiting patiently for this to be corrected but it’s been months now. When will it be corrected?

Awesome BUT. They should add an option to remember your password so you don’t have to re write your password every time

Great service. I am an American & my family was here in 1660, long before there was an America. America is a Constitutional Republic, is not, never has been and NEVER WILL BE a democracy. We have democratic representation ONLY. I have used Proton Mail for years and then got the mobile app. Have not had any issues til today which is what led me here and read the snarky review by an ignorant person who spouts off about America, so excuse the sidetrack! Today when I click the app on my iPhone 8, I go to my acct but when I click on the email to read it, the app closes. My phone software is up to date as is the PM app so maybe the developer has an idea of what is happening? Thanks

Non adjustable tiny font & poor implementation Photos attaching. I will give Proton credit for staying in touch. But based on these two issues, It’s almost as if no one at Proton Developer team uses an iPhone. Aside from the font size issue below, when you go to attach a photo from within IOS ProtonMail, it only shows you disorganized Albums from iOS Photos. It doesn’t give you access to your entire organized folder and album structure within iOS Photos as do 99% of iOS 3rd party for apps. It’s still too hard to read on iPhone se2. And yes I have given ProtonMail access to my entire photos library. Re the font, you need to either add a setting in your app to allow the user to control font style and size, or use the part of the Apple Software Developer Kit that allows the user to use iOS built in Dynamic Type feature to control iOS Proton Mail’s font size from iOS Settings/Display & Brightness/Text Size. Cc by bug report since editing this at the developers request doesn’t seem to show up as edited in the App Store Also there was a link to directly contact developer but that goes to some semi automated faq.

Great to have the encryption backbone, but the email editor in iOS stinks. Although bo electronics communications is ever 100% secure, I like having the additional layer of encrypted email protection - especially with some of my work-related engagements. My major gripe is the email editor is attrocious. The app does not reference the screen size to wrap text in the latest iOS. When composing on an iPhone, text will scroll off the side of the screen. Thus, editing text becomes a real pain (PITA). I submitted a ticket two weeks ago, but absolutely no response from the app developers indicates "they don't care" about the various users' platforms - even the most popular iPhones.

Pretty basic. I love the idea of an advertising-free, privacy-focused email account so I’ve given this a try for a year or so. Their approach seems to provide iron-clad security and privacy, which is awesome. Right from the start there were a few things I wasn’t impressed by. First, the functionality of the app is a bit disappointing. The design and interface could definitely use a refresh. The idea of creating email aliases is great, although to delete old aliases it seemed like I had to email support. Unfortunately when I signed up for this service, there wasn’t an option to do in-app purchases unfortunately. So I reluctantly gave my credit card number on their website. I lost track of time and about a year later my credit card got charged the annual fee. When I went in to my email account on the website to cancel I found it really confusing. And it looks like they immediately downgraded my account even though I paid for a year. Luckily now they do offer in-app purchases, which should be much more user-friendly. In the end, I decided to phase out using ProtonMail. I’d consider going back one day if the concept was given a big refresh and the user experience was improved.

They can’t keep their promise. I was happy to find out an email service provider who cares about privacy, not only to find out the claim of not keeping log of IP address is not true. I have deleted the app and the email address, if you claim to care about a privacy then news pop up that they have basically lied. There us a difference between a company who claims to care about customer and people privacy , and a company that never ever claimed they do. When a company that never did claim they care about privacy, have customer information leaked, then we would understand they never cared in the first place. But a company like proton, who claims they don’t keep anything and it’s private and privacy is important, then they openly go and give out the same information they claim they don’t keep to someone who asked for it, then that’s disgusting and disrespectful claim from the company.

Fantastic app. I had done a lot of research on various different companies that had end to end encryption and came across this company about a year ago. At beginning it was a little getting use to how it works but once I did I loved it and still do. One thing that would be nice; however due to end-to-end encryption (I truly love this company) I’m not sure possible; is to be able to open two email address that I own in the app. Not necessarily at same time but rather be able to switch between two addresses. If not possible I would completely understand I would much rather have the satisfaction of knowing that my data is safe which is what I currently have using Proton Mail. Awesome app!! Nicely done guys.

Love ProtonMail, the app not so much.. I love ProtonMail, but the app needs a lot of work. First, mail that you move to the trash still shows up in ‘all mail.’ This just clogs up your view with trash. You can’t make an email template, which is a big deal for me because I have several that I use constantly. One of the biggest shortcomings is that if you have more than one proton email address, the app doesn’t show them separately and there’s really no way, at a glance, to tell which email they were sent to. I’ve already paid for a year’s service, and was gung-ho about moving away from Goggle, but after using the app for a couple of weeks, I’m thinking of keeping my Google addresses. On a side note, the web based access for ProtonMail is much better than the app, at this time.

Love Proton, but…. I’m a paid user, and will continue to be for as long as Proton keeps to their principles. The latest version (3.1.4 at this writing) looks great, and the new organizational features are good (just keeping pace with the likes od Outlook). But it has two flaws that are a big deal for me. When managing email in bulk, the app often simply does not do what is asked. i.e. If I’ve not kept up on my inbox and need to archive or delete in bulk, I can perform the steps of selecting messages and choosing archive or delete, but the messages remain in the inbox. This seems only to happen when dealing with multiple messages at once. The other issue is that the search function is nearly useless. It does not seem to search message content, only address and subject lines.

No dark mode. So many people talk about eye strain from our screens, but with me it’s even more important. Thus, the “clean white” that Apple bragged about ten years ago and is still their default screen mode is very troublesome to me. Many apps, then, also default to this, and Proton Mail is one of them. But, many qpps, to counter this, have a Dark Mode for those of us who want — or in my case, need — darker, less eye-straining, backgrounds. So, I submit to Proton, PLEASE build a default Dark Mode as an settings option. Yes, the app is compatible with Apple’s Accessibility option for Invert Colors, but then when you set it so the main mail screen is dark, if you pop up the side menu, that’s white again. Thus, not enough. Thank you for your time and consideration. If this were fixed, I’d give the app five stars.

Love ProtonMail but the app just doesn’t work. Can’t seem to find anyone else having this problem so my troubleshooting so far has been limited to reinstalling the app and force quitting. I get notifications that I have new emails, but my inbox won’t show them. If I try to force sync it hangs and never loads them. At times it looks like the syncing crashes. At this point I’ll need to find an alternative mail solution for my phone until it’s fixed. Edit: once I posted this it started working. App works well and it’s easy enough to navigate. Looking forward to some ui updates over time!

No support for font scaling - major flaw. While the iPhone app is a great idea it does not support font scaling or minimum size fonts which makes it completely unusable by people with low vision. Emails are presented in browser like windows with tiny unreadable font although with ability to zoom with 2 fingers but then you have to move the message around to read it. In 2019 considering all the technical achievements and coding advances such a setup is unacceptable. I d love to use this service but this is a show stopper which is extremely unfortunate and disappointing. I got a standard reply from their customer service they are “working on it” but how hard can it be to implement it after so many years in the business? So, great idea but very disappointing implementation.

Usually good. Have used desktop for several years and email is quite good. The phone app is usually good but occasionally and more often of late it flakes out. Can not login. Won’t launch. Touch ID or face recognition won’t work. The phone app is a hit or miss proposition whether it will even launch or let you login. I find myself saving icon shortcut to the website in safari browser on home screen. Works ok. A work around but not the most elegant. However, it’s necessary as the phone app just isn’t stable enough or reliable enough. I’ve deleted the phone app. Again. Might reinstall again in day or two and see if they have fixed and it’s working again.

Worst email app I've ever used. I was excited to use Proton's services and now I just feel trapped. This app is very basic, and still isn't performant. I can't tell you how many times I get a notification, tap on it, and then have to wait 30 seconds for the app to refresh before I can see my email. Other bugs: Sometimes I swipe an email away and it acts on a different email, when an email is open there isn't any archive button, you can create folders but not edit them, "threading" is super aggressive but also inaccurate somehow (my Uber eats receipts are "threaded" with tons of other similar receipts in the past for some reason, but not all of them... The worst is when ProtonMail sends me a email telling me it blocked a spam message, what am I supposed to do about that?! Very disappointed and of course I spent three days importing all my email into Proton, bought a two year subscription, and changed over my MX records. The design of this service requires that Proton writes the apps, because of that you have an obligation to do better than a basic React Native POC. Please acknowledge that and get to work writing a native iOS app if you want normal people to use this service, and not just the most privacy conscious.

Customer support doesn’t care, need tech support. I completed all the steps for the increase in storage but the amount still shows as half what was promised. I double checked all the steps and everything looks good. I only had issues with verifing backup methods. I had to do the email verification a few times till it took. I completed the tasks within the first week. I used the app on a separate device whereas I completed the others on a computer. Judging by this app’s feedback I see many others with the same problem. I’m sure there’s a way to physically add it, by way of how it works it’s a simple fix since New paid subscriber’s get additional memory all the time. Plus the settings in the back end are sure simple to adjust. I need someone from the tech department.

Very good but lacks an important feature. I lProtonMail is an excellent service for both the privacy conscious and the masses. The reason so many email providers are free is because it the provider is in a privileged position to scan all of your emails. ProtonMail sets itself apart from the rest, and doesn't read your email, or store it in a format that they can access. However, I have more than one protonmail account and having to log off one account and log in the other is a hassle. I request for Protonmail to support having more than one account can be logged in on the app at the same time and be easily be able to switch between accounts.

Good product but unprofessional staff. I do like the product, but getting tired of paying for a bunch of tools that are basically in beta mode. The only thing that works flawlessly is the email. Proton Pass is a disaster, you cannot mount Proton Drive as a network drive in Windows 11. However, the real issue is the unprofessionalism of their staff. Staff members troll their business Facebook site and insult anybody that criticizes their anti-Google, anti-last pass, unprofessional marketing methods. They do this from their personal site/profile, but are not smart enough to not say that they work for Proton. They seem to be a bunch of typical Millennials: self entitled brats with no respect for others opinions. UPDATE : I received your reply and it was a “false statement” as the situation in the original post did indeed occur, so own it. Now I question your corporate “integrity” and therefore lower your score from three to one stars. Grow up!

Was amazing, now buggy after major update. I really do like protonmail. But after a major update that they had a while back, I’ve had constant issue with the app. I rarely get notified of emails (I’ve done all the right things and contacted their help line) and it still isn’t fixed. It takes a long time to load when opened and even then, I have to refresh to get new emails to show up. I was hoping these issues would be fixed with updates, but it hasn’t. I’m not the only one who’s experienced this either. I really hope this gets fixed, because it’s very frustrating and tedious to have to manually check my email throughout the day for new messages.

Almost There. I’ve been using Protonmail for several years and have been rather pleased with the service. Furthermore, the app has been running well on both my iPhone XR and second generation iPad Pro. If there is one item I could suggest to improve the functionality of the interface, it would be the option to put any given “box” (including the search results) into “select” mode, whereupon the user could choose specific messages—via a checkbox column—to move or delete. If that option is already available, then I have not found it.

Good but needs some basic updates. The app is pretty good, notifications come thru quickly & the feature set is rich for the free version. Sometimes copy/pasting between devices (iPad to Chrome on Mac or iPhone to iPad or visa versa) yields text that becomes redacted or blacked out once the message is sent but looked fine in the draft. At times also when drafting on an iPhone the message field needs to be scrolled to the right instead of the text wrapping to the size of the screen in use. Lastly, what’s holding me back from providing more stars is that if a message is read on an iPhone or Mac browser the Unread Number Badge won’t update on the iPad w/o having to launch the app & let the inbox refresh, this should happen on it’s own.

I love the service, but I hate the app.. I have had the same issue with this app through two different phones now, over the span of three years. I love protonmail and the privacy protections it has, but the app is soooooo frustrating to write emails more than a few sentences on, because the longer an email is, the slower and slower it types. Get more than about 200 words in and it creeps slower and slower and slower on entering the words I actually typed, to the point that I can type 3-5 sentences “blind” and then just sit there and watch it for what seems like an eternity for it to type out what I wrote. This is the only app on my phone that does it, and it did it on my iPhone 12 Pro and it’s doing it now on my iPhone 15 pro.

Love protonmail. I don't do many reviews and I actually came to the reviews for help. I'm having an issue and I hope to hear from the devs about it. I'm really tired of getting auto-logged out. I understand it's for my protection but once logged in, I should be able to use touchID as identity verification. Here's the reason this matters. I don't know my password. I use an offline password manager and getting the password can be a tedious process especially if I'm out and about. For those of us who take security seriously, password managers are a must and when combined with a secure email, I feel much better. However, not be able to use my account at will is a real pain. Please, devs, add in a feature to touchID authenticate once I've logged in, I don't mind entering my 2fa once a day or something but touchID needs to substituted for a password once the correct password has been entered at least once. Other than that gripe, this app has been great. I agree with another reviewer that swipe to spam was annoying but there's been an update to change that.

Protonmail is great. I have been using your service for years now. It has completely replaced all other email services I once’s used. It’s fast, it’s secure and the spam filter is amazing. The only request I have is to add a function that allows you to log in to multiple accounts and easily switch between them. I have six different accounts and each time I need to check another one I have to log out and log in to the other, which is quite time consuming. Just an ease of life request. Thank you for all that you do. You provide a great service - I recommend Protonmail to everyone I know.

Version 3.1.4 is awful on SE. If you like only being able to see 4 emails at a time I suppose this is an improvement. But I was very disappointed to get an automatic update that rearranged the layout of the inbox so I couldn’t see half as many of my business messages at a time. To make matters worse. The divisions between subject lines are almost an imperceptible light grey. In this version, there are now little two letter name card that waste the left margin in the inbox. Who needs that for business? There are always more contacts than the short hand allows for. That makes it a pure waste of valuable screen space. Add to that the new location of the labels. Now each of the emails takes a full three lines of text to display in a VERY relaxed spacing. All the lines now have a “6 foot space” between them. Very disappointing. The last User Interface was easier to view. One improvement was the ability to choose what swipe actions do. Really if other folks want to waste screen space, that’s fine. But don’t force everyone else to suffer with the downgrade.

THE Secure Email Platform!. ProtonMail is a Swiss-based email service with modern encryption ensuring that only the sender and receiver(s) of a message will be able to read its contents. This implementation of end-to-end encryption happens automatically when email is sent between ProtonMail users. ProtonMail is the best way to use email with modern security and simplicity in mind. It completely eliminates the need for any of the popular email providers that cannot provide communication security. This is the service for you if you no longer want to send and receive the digital equivalent of postcards. It’s simply the best way to do email the right way!

Nothing is perfect....but ProtonMail is close!. Love it! The ability to encrypt/password protect/and set a expiration time for emails with moderate to sensitive personal data to users that use yahoo/google/hotmail/aol/etc......yes....still people using aol, makes it a game changer for me. I use another IMAP email.....but ProtonMail I believe is what email should be and have been all along. I didn’t give 5 stars because I fall into the old school mentality of nothing’s perfect, and with the new features/capabilities being added all the time, it’s obvious there’s a lot of development still being done that I can’t wait to see. Ignore the naysayers and PC rhetoric ProtonMail! You can’t please everyone....some can never be pleased no matter how much you bow down....so don’t! JS

You guys are corrupt. I got locked out of my ProtonMail, because I didn’t pay $0.50, THAT came from YOU not being able to charge my card for protonVPN. I had canceled my protonVPN a year before this because I didn’t like the speeds, removed my subscription and well, got stuck with it for a year since had already paid and you wouldn’t give me a refund. Then a few days ago, I get a notice saying my “card couldn’t be charged, please add a card”, and for not having a card for you to charge for a CANCLED SUBSCRIPTION, I had to give you my card and info or continue being locked out of my email, which I DIDN'T want to do in the first place, for a stupid amount of cents. It’s not about the few cents, it’s YOU charging for not being to charge ME for something that was already cancled and LOCKING me out of a separate service of yours. It’s ME having to give information I felt uncomfortable sharing with you. Straight PETTY AND TYRANT COMPANY .

Best email service out there. I started utilising protonmail free after my gmail was hacked and Google didn’t do anything to help me secure it. Since I started with protonmail (first with the free service then the plus one) I’ve had no incidents occur which makes me feel safer as I use my personal email a lot for work as much as personal. I also enjoy letting people know about this email service and how great it has been. What I love about upgrading is when protonmail send me news letters letting me know how my money is helping others as much as it is helping me. You get really good perks when being a subscriber like a multitude of folders, more storage and early access to their other items such as personalisation of themes and to use proton calendar. The only issue I have is I’m not able to use the calendar feature on my iOS devices yet. However, I don’t mind waiting. Despite this, I highly recommend Protonmail because you never know when you could be like me and get hacked. Highly recommend protonmail and can’t wait to see what they have in store.

Dramatically Improved. I have enjoyed ProtonMail for almost a year now as a paid member. The experience on desktop was better then the IOS app but I had no issues with the all to make me stop using it, but you could tell it needed improved. This latest update dramatically improves the experience on my phone. The folders are now correctly categorized and color matched to my desktop version making it easier to keep organized. The app also seems to run smoother now then it has in the past. I recommend you trying this now more then ever.

Thank You. Absolutely great app and company, you pay for what you get here I pay for the top tier because I believe in this company to continue to do the right thing. Have been really needing another thing like this when it comes to my day to day. I have been getting more and more worried about the aspect of big tech knowing selling all info and just the thought of people being able to buy a pretty well equipped profile on all your online activities and having sensitive investing and financial emails come through Gmail and knowing they scan everything was a big concern of mine. Very happy with the way this company is moving forward.

Great Email Service. I have been using Protonmail and ProtonVPN (free versions) for several months. I have used Vyper In the past, and appreciated the strict privacy laws in Switzerland. I love the fact that everything is and to end encrypted, and secure, even from Proton employees. I have moved any websites that have to do with financial or medical info off of the free mainstream services to Proton. The only problem I have is with US Post Office Informed Delivery service which emails me a photocopy of my mail each day. Their mail servers apparently don’t work well with Protons, so I get attachments I have to download. Otherwise, it is a 5 star service. Maybe some day US privacy laws will catch up to the EU and Switzerland.

Great service, so good I pay for it.. I love ProtonMail and everything they stand for. I have been a paid customer for years. But I feel they should continue to refine the mail app instead of moving on to calendar and proton drive apps. The search feature is terrible. Only searches the sender or subject line. No way to filer out trash. So if you are looking for a coupon or a receipt you have to search for the merchandise name and then look through hundreds of trashed items. The app has been around for years and it’s still very basic. Rather than expand to other apps. I feel you should master the thing that made you great.

Great Service, Mediocre App. I have been a paying ProtonMail customer for multiple years now, and I have been very satisfied with the service in regards to privacy, stability, and features. However, the new version of the app feels really, really clunky. It does not bring me to the top of my email list to view new emails; I have to manually scroll up from the previous top email on the list from when I last accessed the app. Additionally, sometimes it will inexplicably start the app with a random recent email from the past few days already open, which I did not tap on. None of these are dealbreakers, but they are obnoxious, and it makes the app feel like it lacks polish or didn't get thoroughly tested in QC.

Excellent app. So why 5 stars? Because ProtonMail offers an e2e solution that’s easy to use and let’s us move away from ad driven companies. Just for that it’s an immediate 5. Where are the weaknesses? Well the app and design is nice - but it still has quite a way to go. For example, multiple emails don’t collapse and pile up. Also you get bombarded with notifications (not spam, just if you get a lot of emails you get a lot of notifications). Also you don’t get all the modern GUI features you would normally get. Luckily it’s open source so if you’re a dev (like me) you can just contribute to help build a better experience.

Accessibility and Usability Issues. UPDATE FOR BETA: The issues below are still real, but the current beta version makes side-by-side windows possible. I can now also use two fingers to expand or shrink the size of a message I'm looking at, but only if there is rich text. Plain text is still miniscule. — Keep in mind that I am rating the app, not the solid email service. REVIEW OF CURRENT RELEASE: The font size on iPadOS is so small that the app is unusable for me. I appreciate ProtonMail's take on security, but accessibility matters too. It‘s a little better on the iPhone, but it doesn’t respect my font-size settings there either. Another issue on the iPad: side-by-side windows are not possible.

Mid. The email service is fine, but the app sorely lacking in ergonomic features like Gmail. Every app has tiny UX and QoL hacks that nobody notices when they work, but are extremely obvious when they’re missing. When I’m selecting and archiving multiple email, which is essential to my workflow, requires 2-3 taps because Archive is hidden under a “…” submenu rather than being a top-level item. The “…” menu button is also tiny and often requires 2-3 tries to properly hit it. I am certain that archiving is a more common operation than tagging. The selection buttons on the left of each email are tiny and not vertically centered so I end up accidentally tapping into an email when I am trying to select it. The interaction region for the selection toggle should be the entire vertical span of the email list entry not this tiny square. The app just feels generally… slow? Gmail feels snappy while protonmail doesn’t. I would consider investing into profiling and optimizing response time. Overall it’s fine but makes the daily routine of clearing inbox feel like a grinding chore. And I pay for this.

Amazing, Secure, Exc Cust Svc. I’ve been using Protonmail for business/personal for over a year and absolutely love the service!! I transferred my website domain very easily and the peace of mind and security it brings is unmatched. I’ve tried all the others. Yes, I’ve had a couple of emails that didn’t make it through, but the “good” FAR outweighs any “bad” with this company. Most of us have had our email accounts compromised and/or attacked in one way or another. With PM not only can you see a list of every device that is using your account, but there is also a log showing when and where any attempt to log into your account occurred. I know others claim to provide this service, but I’ve found major inaccuracies with them. PM is like having “Email Police” on guard 24/7! I strongly recommend using the VPN service as well. Both services are less than $15 per month!! Can’t wait for the release of your Calendar 😉 GO PROTON!

The only Encrypted Email Server that I will use. Proton mail is the one and only important email server you will ever need! Especially if you need to send or receive important financial documents. Ex: Filing taxes, Buying a home, etc. I know how easy it is for other servers like Google and/or Yahoo that will use and sell your personal data. I personally call those type of email servers my Junk Mail. I will only trust one server with any and all of my personal information, that will always be Proton Mail. 😅Thank you for offering a free email, some of us folks really can’t afford any type of subscription for anything fancy like an app. 🙏

Excellent encrypted email app. Update: the issue I mention below has been remedied in the latest update. Thanks devs! Overall I’m happy with ProtonMail - they’ve got a nice app and provide a secure service. However, I really wish swiping left on a message in the inbox screen would send the message to archive instead of spam. I don’t know about others, but I hardly ever get spam, it seems like an infrequently needed feature to be given such prime UI real estate. Archiving on the other hand I do all the time to keep my inbox uncluttered, and I have to invoke the drop down menu to do it. Anyways, I would still recommend this service, but would like to see that feature changed.

Thanks for ruining the app. Honestly I don’t know how app developers that do stuff like this can sleep at night. How do you look at yourself in the mirror and feel proud of your work when this is what it is. You took a perfectly serviceable app and redesigned it and added a bunch of new bugs for absolutely no benefit to me, the end user and consumer of your service (which I pay for). This new app design is harder to read, launches with the top most email hidden below your new dumb header, and crashes hard out whenever I try to edit a draft. Great job! You ruined the email experience in an EMAIL APP! Just bring the old app layout and appearance back, fire whoever dreamt up this terrible new one, and focus on fixing bugs and making your app *work* good, not just *look* like every other awful, MiNiMaLiST redesign.

Please add the ability to block senders via the app. Overall I’m content with Proton Mail despite hearing from multiple sources that the developers sold out and it isn’t as secure as it once was during its inception. My only gripe is that you please add the ability to “select all” messages when searching for a specific sender. An online troll recently signed me up for a ton of mailing lists and spam and when I search for example “NBC NEWS” it’ll pull up all the NBC news spam messages but doesn’t give me the option to select all from the search query menu. Also, please add the ability to block senders from the mobile app not just the desktop site. Thanks

ProtonMail for life, but update ruined the app.. ProtonMail service is outstanding. I’ll say that out of the gate. But this last app update with the UI overhaul absolutely destroyed load times on the app. Used to be quick, efficient, and snappy. What it seems like they did is before it had your emails downloaded locally and it would update just new emails after the app opened, like an email app should be. Now you get a blank screen for 10 seconds while the app checks for new emails. Slow, and sluggish, basically using a browser in the app. The app used to be my go-to whether in home, office or out, now I only use the app if I can’t get to a computer. Even if wireless or service internet is turned off on my phone it still takes 10 seconds to load my emails. Ridiculous. I should be able to browse old emails without looking at a blank loading screen for 10 seconds.

One big trust fall for the price.. I will probably never buy proton products from the App Store for that Apple take like %30 of the sale and assume that affects the price. As of right now it’s a coin toss as to if our data is not shared with big data company’s. Lots of back and forth information about that. Is it lees sketch from Facebook and google I can only hope. If vpn and mail are the same price or less I would buy more years for a less price. Ps. Not able to delete mail that is marked for trash. Have to go into each file to delete it. :/. Over all thank you for this product. It’s needed in this day and age where tire shop will sell your info but demand it for service. No hospital is safe anymore as well. Sad

Not that great. Everyone raves about how ProtonMail is encrypted and the high security, but I’ve found it to be awful. Every time I send an email from my iPhone if I close the app right after pressing send the email will NOT be sent. I have to press send and leave the app open for about 3 seconds longer to make sure the email goes thru, but now I’m always concerned an important email will not be sent and I reopen the app to confirm it went thru. Another major problem I’m having is that when I receive an email with an attachment I can view the attachment but later on the attachment disappears! It’s so frustrating. Probably going to switch to outlook if ProtonMail can’t function properly at such a basic level. Don’t waste your time setting up with this service and go elsewhere.

Great service, terrible new UI. First, thank you for the great service that PM had always been. However the new UI is not user friendly. It’s the same “metro” style that made so many people ditch Windows 10 and move to Mac. All white on white (or black on black if you use dark mode) with a lot of waisted space. It’s difficult to read. Useless icons on the left waste a ton of space. Thread “feature” groups messages from the recycle bin. Why? - they are already deleted. Look at iPhone’s native mail client. Despite simple looks, it’s exceptionally polished. I am sad to see that MS design plagued PM’s interface. At least give people an option to switch between the former and new style instead of forcing it please.

Not really private. Your entire email history of who you wrote and when is stored wide open, unencrypted. This is more than enough to get you arrested by an authoritarian state (ie, most if not all of them). Privacy? What a joke. Also, if you downgrade to free account, they will hold your mailbox hostage until you pay them for what you don’t want. Edit: Let me reiterate—do you really want to do business with a company that will lock you out from all your email, sending or reading, to extort 50 cents from you after you have canceled premium? Even from reading your own messages. They seize. All. Your. Mailbox. History. If you do (I sure don't)--hope you don't say have a card expire while you're away and then think you still have--any of your email!

Love this app BUT. Love this app so much. They just released a new design and I really don’t like it. Too much like gmail (yuck). But maybe that’s just me. Anyways, one of the best improvements made to the app is the “unsubscribe from this list” button. Brilliant! Thank you! HOWEVER please move this button away from the “load remote content” button. One tiny accidental slip of the finger and you never get the emails again. That’s a huge bummer and it already happened with one of my newsletters. Dang it! Please just move it to the end of the email where people expect that button to be anyways. Thank you so much!

The mail service DESTROYED me. AVOID at all costs. This service really really blew up my life. I cannot say how hard it should be avoided. Wanting to get away from the big free services i switched my entire digital life to this. All accounts. All banks. All log ins. And then when it came to the second year. Time to renew. It WILL NOT accept any payments methods. Verify this and that. Triple certify this stand in the shower with your birth certificate singing yankee doodle and you can continue. Of course what i mean is. You cant pay. No matter what you do. So they will not allow me to access my email or even downgrade to a free account. IVE LOST EVERYTHING. My entire digital life is tied to this email and the just locked me out after it refuses to allow payment. I have to start with a new email. AGAIN after switching all to this. Because and only because its a lousy horrible service.

Solid. I like the variety of options (both free and paid), the layout choices are sleek, it is easy to navigate and of course the encryption/privacy aspect of it is very appealing in comparison with other alternatives. I wish there was more space available for free accounts but there is a checklist of things you can do to earn up to 1 GB of storage for free, which is nice. Also, there are deals if you are thinking about upgrading to the paid version as well. I’ve been aware of Proton Mail for a little while now and I’m hearing good things so I’m looking forward to trying this out in addition to the VPN, Calendars, etc.

PM “STILL” wants u 2 go blind!. Ok... PM really doesn’t want that but come on... after all these years PM still has the smallest app font in the industry!!!! The developers still don’t understand or even know who their core customers are! Ok… I will help you… Your core customers use phones… small mobile phones with even smaller screens… got that!?! This “updated” version continues to ignore that fact and is now a confused jumble of disassociated functionality passed off as new and improved! This tiny app font situation continues no matter how many complaints developers receive from across the web... I would have been a “Visionary” subscriber for years by now if they had at least made an attempt to fix the font issue!!! Just can’t see rewarding a company who ignores something as important as vision!!!

Ugh! Multiple issues. Signed up for free account And upgraded a few months later. My paid account expired and now I cannot log into my original email address from my free account that I set up before switching to a paid account due to "unpaid balance". I purchased the original upgrade through the App Store but I have never been able to see the purchase history in my apple account, only the App download and I am getting a pop up saying my account is disabled unless I go to the website and pay. Why do I have to pay to continue a service that I signed up for initially as free? I don't mind doing that but why can't I go through my apple account since that is how I originally paid for the year of service? Lastly, all of the times I have reached out to support, someone has replied from zendesk...I thought PM responds directly. Not ideal and now I cannot access import emails!
