Best up & coming trails website. Finally a site that is free and that you can trust. Also, all of the trails are crowdsourced are updated as necessary. The curation team was great to work with when I added some of my local trails in Barstow.

Looking for trails, not roads.. I live outside of the Fort Bragg, NC area; nearby St Pauls, NC. The first day I used this app, I drove 45 minutes to discover the “trail” on this app was nothing more than a long stretch of highway. Also, the app doesn’t have the few existing trails I know of. I’d bet this app is fine for areas where trail running is already popular, but for folks that don’t live in the mountains, there still isn’t an app worth downloading. Hope that changes in the future.

Crashes. Was told about this app from a running buddy. Downloaded the app and keeps crashes no before it can complete loading trails. Obviously no good if you can’t open the app. Too bad. It could have been really useful if it worked.

Super! But.... I hope that improvements to the run/gps tracker will soon come. Auto audio feedback with time, distance, pace and elevation would be great! Additionally, it would be most helpful to include an off-trail warning system for those times when we unintentionally run too far off a chosen trail. Otherwise, this app is spectacular! Big thanks to REI for their app support.

The Best. I love this app, sending a big thank you to all the folks that have made finding new trails easy peasy!

Using for a year... best running app ever.. I find it very reliable and helpful to plan runs. Can’t imagine hitting the hills without it.

So needed. Please keep it up!. Thank you for getting this going. It’s a life changer! Haha only wish there were more trails haha near the humans on the planet.

A great app for planning fun routes. I use this app all the time to plan routes for outings. I like to use it on the go too, if I download areas before hand I usually can use the gpx tracks even in the wilderness. The elevation profiles are very helpful, especially the green/yellow/red zones which show you which sections are runnable.

Great app! No cell data connection needed. Great app with good guidance, good info from others, and I love that, once you download the maps, you don’t need a cell data signal to use the app. This is very helpful in remote areas with poor cell service. The app still gives you a live specific and generally accurate location on the screen. That makes it harder to get lost.

Best app for trail running, hiking as well. Finally a great outdoors app. AllTrails is barely functional, and this app is outstanding. Major props to the UX/UI team, and the developers in general; this is my goto app for any outdoor activity now.

Have loved this app for forever and shared with all my running clients and friends. I love how the gps signals your on the map regardless of having phone signal or not, as it’s a GREAT SAFETY FEATURE!! There’s so many maps and profiles of trails to help you understand where you’re headed to and to prepare, along with imbedded driving routes via google maps which is super convenient! I recommend it always to friends, my ShineOnHealth Coaching clients and strangers I meet out on the trails!

The “fresh new look” is not so fresh.... After the UI update, the map jumps around and makes it impossible to find what I’m looking for (I end up in Utah instead of Colorado and then the map freezes.) Beyond the bugginess, I’m disappointed in the UX changes, I was trying to find a trail with my friend and I got so confused. The old app was great - it’s awesome to improve on it with fresh design but only if the core functionality still works!

Great, but.... Great app! Can I suggest if not a forum, i.e., Mountain Project, then at least a place for comments on individual runs. Someone who recently ran a trail could mention the conditions, availability of water and such. That is not a deal breaker!

Missing the old version a lot. I LOVED using this app in the prior version. It was the best. The new version has been disappointing to say the least. After trying to use the map to find trails in certain areas of my home state I’ve just given up - the map is touchy and the screen/trails seems to refresh every time I move the map just a little bit, and not in a good way. The old version used to very concisely list the trails in whatever part of the map you were in...now there’s a scrolling set of trails you have to try to make your way through on an already touchy screen. Like other commenters, I’m all for improvements, but there was a ton of great functionality on the previous version that’s gone, making this app barely usable.

A very good resource. I appreciate being able to look up trails all over the country. The maps are a huge help when the gps tracks your location to keep you on the trail.

Love This App!!. I am a new trail runner so I have found this app incredibly helpful! I had no idea that there are so many wonderful places to run and this make makes them accessible to everyone! I’m so happy to be able to log my runs, contribute reviews and photos to the community of runners, and get to know the natural beauty of my state. I think running outdoors is going to really help me this year - especially considering that many activities are closed due to the pandemic. Thank you so much to all of those who contributed to the creation of this wonderful app!

Great App!. This app proved to be the best if several I tried in a trip to Fraser (CO). It misses some trails but the ones in are very well documented and right on spot which was important as we were running/trekking with loads of snow.

New trail runner. Love the on trail navigation. Helps keep me running on the right path 🤣

Great app. Love this app, only thing I would add is a timer to your gps tracked runs. I tracked my path on gps and realized the app only shows you the distance and the time the run was started...would be nice to have a record of the time...

We need a watch app. App is great, but would be killer if we had a watch app to track runs, and even better if it could use the map to keep you on track

Mostly a great app. We primarily use this app when running or hiking in unfamiliar terrain. It’s a great way to check location via GPS if you think you may have gotten turned around when deciding to try a new trail with poor signage or missing blazes. Also a pretty good option for looking up running options when traveling. My one beef is that some of the trails available on the website (including popular race routes) don’t show up in the app. In some cases you can even download a GPX file of the route from the desktop website, but you can’t load it into the app, and the trail/route doesn’t show up in app. Seems weird for Trail Run Project to have complete, downloadable GPX data for routes but for them not to be included for use with app.

missing feature from prior version!. there was a feature in the previous version that was **awesome** that i can no longer figure out how to access. in the past i could, see where i was in the elevation profile; a black dot on the profile indicated pretty much exactly where i was in terms of distance travelled and elevation. this was so helpful as i would know what to expect and how much further i had to go. bring this feature back please!!!!

Awesome app. Really like the app, but what would be awesome is an apple watch version of the app so that I wouldn't even have to take my phone with me

New update is bad. The latest update doesn’t allow me to pick trails from the map view to view more details even if the are highlighted. You have to click based on the list view and then select. And once I have one trail selected the map view won’t allow you to even see the new trails. Please update or I’ll probably have to delete and just use Trailforks.

So excellent!. As an avid trail runner, I found it exciting that upon researching the sport, it’s relatively less communicated when compared with others. Less websites, hardly any apps, trails are all geared for hiking. Thankfully it looks like someone took the opportunity to change that, and thankfully it is done very well!

I have no complaints.. I’m an avid trail runner and in Colorado there are literally hundred of trails within an hour of me. This has been amazing at helping me find all the hidden gems! If you are just trying to discover new trails or have been trail running for a while GET THIS a APP. Best features: The feature that takes you directly to google maps to find trail heads. It makes planning routes and deciding which trails are worth my time so much easier. Updated trail conditions, which is super helpful in the spring and winter months Ability to add trails to a “to do list” The descriptions are so detailed from elevation maps, personal reviews and tips, pictures.

Saved my life. Went for a trail run while on vacation and downloaded this app on a whim while walking out to the road. There were countless times on the trail where I referenced the map to figure out which way to go so as to not get lost. Without this app, we would be lost on Mt Hood, for sure.

First app that's dedicated to hikers. This is the first app I have seen so far that is dedicated to hikers. It has detailed maps of the hikes and best part is that the maps work offline too. I truly love the app.

The best!. Hasn’t let me down yet and I appreciate the reviews and knowledge from other folks

Perfect for traveling. The perfect app for finding trails on long drives to stretch your legs or when traveling to new cities!

Best Hiking/Trail App by Far!!. I use this app daily and tell everyone I meet on the trail about it. The data it provides - at zero cost - is truly remarkable and much appreciated. Fantastic app for hiking, trail running, and planning future hikes. I absolutely love it. Thank you for such a quality product!!!

My go-to adventure map. I have saved myself and a few other lost hikers with this map. Even without a decent signal it can, most of the time, show the basic blue locator dot and trail lines. Super easy to plan stops, distances, connector trails using the satellite image. People cannot believe it’s free. I worked at Rei and no one knew about it. Elevation profile on the main page, being able to highlight each section is just beautiful. I cant say enough about it.

Moab. This app saved my trip. The maps I had were outdated and I was able to find trails the whole week of my trip.

Another nagging app from REI?. Why do I getting get asked every time I open the app to download South Dakota’s maps? This happens with MTB Project app and Hiking Project as well. Nice apps otherwise!

Updated format has made this app unusable. This was my favorite app until the recent update. It is now very difficult to navigate when looking at areas with many trail options. Elevation profile used to be much easier to use too. I feel lost without this app so please change it back to the original!!!!

I have been waiting for an app like this!. I have used this app on my travels but nationally and internationally and helps me to quickly identify some great trails with some insight on trail maintenance and directions right to the trailhead. Simply the best!

Garbage!. This app is absolute garbage. You can use it without having your location services turned on. Sometimes we just want to choose our own level of privacy. Why wouldn’t this work without knowing my location. It should let me research and locate trails without telling IT where I am. DONT USE OR SUPPORT ANY APPS OR PROGRAMS THAT DONT LET YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN PRIVACY. THAT MEANS YOU (new millennials).

Marble falls. I love this short trail, run it a lot. Takes about 1hr and 10 min or less. But be careful this year ,lots of ticks. Found one in my arm 2 weeks ago. April 2018

Missing. The website online has a grays and Torrey’s Peru trail but the app does not show it. Just wondering why Thanks love the app

Awesome. This app is fantastic. I have been using it for years. I wish there was an easy way to add trails

R M Smith. This is reminiscent of the old Motion Based system that Garmin bought and then, for whatever reason, the components that allowed you to view trails in different areas was cancelled. This new program by REI brings that capability back. Great way to find places to run when traveling. Love it - thanks REI!

Best Trail App. Beats AllTrails by a long way. This thing highlights all the trails on a satellite map. It’s fantastic and the only app that any trail runner or hiker should have. Provides detailed elevation information as well as current conditions. Also provides safety advice, like when snow might be present on trails

Better than the park maps. I can find trailheads and the actual trails, better than the maps provided by the parks. If near WiFi, it’s easy to locate where you are on a trail, especially if it’s an unknown trail.

Awesome app. So your experience may vary depending on what region you are in, but here in Colorado this app has been invaluable for finding new trails to go run. Love it.

Waaaaay too complicated. I have mapped many trails that are from state parks and it is like there is a barrier between the app and the website. Taking a trail run that I just completed should be easy to submit into the trails index. Instead, it is so complicated that I have yet to submit one.

Glitchy. The individual trail selection scroll at the bottoms of the screen is absolutely terrible. Pervious versions of the app were significantly better. Go back to the old version!

My favorite app for trail running!. I’ve recently gotten into trail running and this app helped me learn the trails in my area. I absolutely LOVE it!

Latest update won’t sync state maps. I like this app a lot, however the latest update basically broke it. I can’t see and trails and when I try and update my state maps it fails. Any idea why this is happening?

Great idea, poor execution. Love the idea behind this app, and I use it frequently, but it’s so sloppy for the resources REI has. You can’t add photos via the app, which is annoying. Lots of trails are missing/doubled or start/end in the middle of another trial (which might not be the apps fault, but maybe they can link them all together?). Driving directions is super nice, but sometimes they don’t lead to the right spot (again, probably based on poor information given to the app).

Great App!. This app is really a huge resource, and t came in very handy for finding a fun place to run while on vacation.

No way to download GPX data. The app is fine I guess but there’s no option to download GPX data.

Buggy, difficult to navigate, non reactive. That sums it.

Best Hiking App!. Not only does the app make it easy to find your next great hike/run... once you're on the trail you'll never get lost with the downloaded maps. GPS works even when there is no cell phone coverage. Saved me many times!

Enlightenment. This app is so nifty! It's showing me trails in Georgia I didn't even know existed. It's super handy too because it has the little arrows to show you how to go.

Great resource. As a newcomer to trail running, I love the app's full trail descriptions (at least the ones near me that I have read so far!).

Fun & easy app. Thank you...

Lots of promise.. I think this app shows a lot of promise along with the other apps in the series. It will be really nice for travel and to find new places to run. I hope they add a section to get into the form within the app, like mountain project. Although, I do like this user interface better than Mountain Project.

Great guide for trails. I used this while on vacation at Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon North Rim and Zion for places to run, and it was great for evaluating the terrain to make sure I wasn't getting in over my head. I love the elevation maps, the pictures, and descriptions. Every update makes this app better and better!

So far, so good.. Just started using it. So far, so good. 👍🏻

Too few trails, can't add new ones. The map doesn't have many nice trails, and for many states only a handful of trails is available. This could be remediated if this app could allow sharing trails and uploading new trails to the cloud, but no, it doesn't. Yes, it could help you to find new trail runs, but app developers need a better product manager :). Thus I mark it as 2 stars. At least, until these issues are fixed.

Great resource!!!. New to Texas and love the easy interface to find new trails!!

Too many bugs. Too few trails.. I have a friend who loves this app, so I tried it. I don't know if it just isn't Apple friendly or what. I live in San Diego and only 5-6 trails show up. The app won't let me add new trails from a run unless I go on my laptop and create the trail, then upload to website. I tried to contact creators, but the "I am not a robot" feature shows half an image that I cannot verify from an iPhone. If you have an app, make your features compatible with mobile devices!

Treasure Trove of Trails. Been wanting something this detailed and helpful for a long time. Thank you so much!!!

The Best. This app is awesome. Has most trails and saves me tons of time. Big fan and thanks for providing it to us!

Buggy, glitchy good idea gone bad. I used to use trailrunproject almost exclusively for trail hunting. The new interface is extremely glitchy as well as inaccurate. Bummer that I can’t use it anymore.

Excellent app. Used the app to find great running trails while driving through KY.

Yikes. Great app before the update. Now it is nearly unusable. Bummer!

Glitchy. The individual trail selection scroll at the bottoms of the screen is absolutely terrible. Pervious versions of the app were significantly better. Go back to the old version!

One more step to a full five stars.. First and foremost, I greatly appreciate the application you have produced and see tremendous potential. Here is an idea that I think will make it better, work with Garmin Connect to develop a plug-in that allows users to share their trail runs on your application. There are similar capabilities with Strava, just a little less formal competition, and more to make sharing trails and loops more convenient for the users. While I understand there is an option to record trails using your mobile device, I think more users would find it more convenient to upload trails they (we) run and already record using our GPS enabled wearables- they're a little more battery friendly than a phone, and more often than not, I use my runs off of the beaten path to get away from my phone, as I'm sure most trail runners do. Just a thought, I look forward to the progression of the application.

The best. I love this app, it's perfect. The new updated version did the impossible. It's even better then the previous version. So good I couldn't not review it. It's perfect for picking out that hidden trail you'd love to run, and it's perfect for locating the perfect trail for you. You can use it both offline and online, and the offline version is great. In fact I hardly ever use it online, everything you'll need is there offline. So go, check it out. Download it. I love it, and I guarantee you will too.

Great but slow. Great app before this new update. The app is a lot slower and crashes often. I’ve tried to simplify the display but no effect.

Fabulous resource!. Just started using this family of REI apps and super excited to research. We hike, run, bike, and snowshoe- so always looking for well-annotated sources. Pictures are a HUGE plus, as are elevation details. Will plan to add our own favorites because it looks like individual contributions will be key to success

Trail run project. Seems like a great resource! It's cool how you can download your state's data and use the app with no cell service. It looks like their trails are sourced from individual local contributors... Might be why trails are more scarce in some places? Either way, this is an awesome app if you want to run new trails and not get lost. I'll be using this when I travel, for sure!!

Great resource!. Enjoying the ability to view trails we haven't yet explored. Have only utilized a few basic features-- I like the opportunity to rate trail conditions and see the trails w/ satellite imagery.

Trail Runners will LOVE this. I was introduced to this app yesterday on a run/crawl up Siphon's Draw and on to the Superstition Ridgeline Trail. I would have been lost without this amazing app. It showed me exactly where I was. Won't leave home without it!

Useless for my area. Seems like a decent concept, but none of the local trails used in the St. Louis for trail running or even Mtn biking show up during a search. I've tried clicking on trails that show up elsewhere in the state and nothing happens. There is just a circle that says 4 trails.

Thank you - such a great resource!. This has been such a great resource for me! I highly prefer Trail running, and finding good ones was challenging until I found this app.

Great app, lots of great trails listed. I'm amazed this app is free. I've used it to find trails around the state. The write-ups on the trails are excellent. Like that we can update the trail conditions as a community. Thanks, REI

So much potential...disappointing for now. Having spent a fair amount of time with the Mountain Project app, I was excited to give this one a go - unfortunately it falls a little flat. It has lots of potential, but it feels like something built by a bunch of people who don’t actually understand the activities their apps are made to support. As a run tracker, it’s pretty awful. Strava, Runkeeper and even AllTrails leave it in the dust. No splits, no elevation mapping, no on-the-go feedback - really nothing besides a stopwatch and a GPS tracker. The ability to download trails for offline use is cool, but not unique. Because the app essentially depends on crowdsourcing for its content, the trail labeling is an absolute disaster. At the best of times, this just leads to confusing, duplicated records of the same trail...at the worst of times it’s just straight up inaccurate. The majority of established trails are named, mapped and maintained by some kind of association - for the life of me, I can’t understand why ANY of these apps haven’t been able to forge relationships that would allow trails to be properly named! It fails on the safety front too. All the big names in the game have a way for you to let your friends and loved ones monitor you in real-time. This is a great feature for solo adventurers (anybody watch 127 Hours lately?). AllTrails and some of the other players out there even have “off trail” warnings that notify you when you’ve strayed too far from your intended route - this is a feature I love when trail running on poorly blazed trails! This app has nothing close to any of these features. So far I haven’t found any of the trail ratings to be accurate, mostly because the ratings themselves are poorly conceived. I’m also confused why the developers have to have all these disparate apps for individual activities, but haven’t built a hub for users to combine their data in a single place? That’s a problem for another day though. Overall this app has a pretty user interface, but lacks the substantive content to make it a player in the market. Maybe the developers will hire some people who actually understand/participate in the activities they’re trying to support and we’ll see improvements in time, but for now, this one is a hard pass.

The best trail app out there!. I can't wait to use this app when traveling to new places! And I love being able to add trails in my area so visitors can experience it!

Removes all doubt. I stayed at a lodge about 30 mins out of town and an hour from the National Park. Not only did it give me perfect directions to the starting point, it told me what to look for when I got there, where and when to turn, and what to look for while running.

Excellent South Bay resource. Probably excellent elsewhere too

App now crashes.. Used to love this app. Just today the app crashes while trying to open. Tried deleting and reinstalling as well as resetting phone.

Great for runners. This is an amazing collection of runs curated by and for trail runners. New routes and loops await you!

Good idea, needs some work. I like the app. It seems pretty easy to find preloaded trails and has a lot of good info about them. However, some of the local trails are missing around here (as is to be expected). I tried to save the trail section of my mixed run today and it mentioned it would be saved in my personal app but not made public until I did something. I was still running on the road section so did not stop to really pay attention figuring I would sort it out when I got home. At home I realized I misspelled the trail name and do not see an obvious way to edit the name or publish the trail. I'm sure I can figure it out if I look a bit harder, but this should be a quick and easy process if you want this to be a community driven app. I still recommend the app, but it does need improvement...

Best app I've experienced. This, along with the other Project series ( hike, mountain bike, powder, park series, etc) are probably the best apps I've experienced. Their layout, user interface, and amount of information (which will get better as more people upload their routes) are extremely well thought out. The amount of detail for each route (description, distance markers, elevation detail, difficulty rating) are all very useful. The ability for one account across all the apps is very helpful. I've found the one (sort of) stop shop for all my outdoor excursion leads! Super pumped to get to using these apps and exploring the opportunities they lead me to!

Really great. Found a relatively obscure trail online and found it in the app. Kept me on the trail, perfect info on elevation - great app.

Update horrible. He new update is horrible and not user friendly. Can I get the old version please

Great app.. Love this app. Excellent for finding loops to run in Rocky Mountain National park. More people that use it and contribute trail reports, etc the better it will get

Pretty cool and amazing potential. This is a great app for searching trail runs across the world. Although limited, as more people contribute, this will be a great site for all future journey planning. Please contribute!

Need users!. Great site. Best medicine is numbers! Need more input from trail users. Or, input from vetted users.

Love the maps!. Can't beat free, quality offline trail maps.

Great Job 👍🏻. Very useful before and during trail runs. Great job!

Awesome app and site. Very great, particularly with the recent update. Tons of detail and very thorough. Love that you can download areas to help loan even faster.

So glad this exists. I already use MTB Project and for whatever reason never thought that a trail run project would exist. Found out today and am ecstatic. Looking forward to using and abusing this bad boy.

Amazing!. We trail run 1-2 times a week. We have always had our personal favorite trails, although, now with the quick resource of this app we are able to find new runs rather then use maps. Super happy.

Awesome app. Great app if youre new to a city and want to know where the good trails are located around the area. Theres also another app called mtb project for mountain biking.

New trail runner. Love the on trail navigation. Helps keep me running on the right path 🤣

Best Trail Ap All Time!. Unbelievable content! Super easy to find the hidden gems you've always wanted to run, hike, or bike. The Adventure Team has high standards and all submitted content is reviewed for quality. If it's on here, it is good!

Don't update. Overall...the update is nice. More trails, nicer feel, sleeker, yada, yada, yada. But it's ruined. The maps feature is gone, as well as the feature to see where you are on the vertical view. Also, while you can see how long a trail is, there is no longer distance markers on the app to show say, exactly where mile 5 is. Please bring back the Maps tab, with distance markers, it's so much easier to use than the new way. Also, allowing us to see where we are on the elevation map wouldn't be bad either....:
