Interval Ear Trainer App Reviews
Interval Ear Trainer App Description & Overview
What is interval ear trainer app? Every musician should work on Ear Training (or Aural Training) and Interval Ear Training is a very important element of ear training. To put it very simply, you will learn to recognise the relationship between two notes (by distance), when they are played together or apart!
There are two types of interval listening, harmonic and melodic. In harmonic intervals the notes are played at the same time and in melodic the notes are played one after the other. Easy to remember: Melodic Intervals make melody, Harmonic Intervals make harmony!
Many of you will probably want to understand how the names are found and how to work out the interval note names in every key. For this info you probably want to check out my ebook Practical Music Theory (available from justinguitar.com) which will explain all the theory related to this.
This app deals specifically with Interval Ear Training, both melodic and harmonic. It will start very easy and gradually get harder as you get more correct and can pass each stage. You can choose from Piano or Guitar Input for your answers, and you can chose to hear the notes and guitar or piano. Personally, I'd recommend getting used to both. In "Training Mode" you can select specific intervals to work on if you are struggling with just specific intervals or types of interval.
I'm sure you'll find this app very helpful, all you need to add is practice time!
Best wishes, Justin

Easy to use and customizable. This has been a great app to learn intervals from. It has a training mode, which allows you to specify what intervals to train. I spend a lot of time using this feature for problem areas. I do wish this app had some additional / customization. I'd like to know at what pitch my ears start to waiver and it would be great to specify a pitch range in training mode. Side note: I had a lot of issues being successful with this app until I started using mnemonics. Search for ear training mnemonics. There are a lot of good suggestions out there.
Learning musician. Ten minutes in and I think this app is amazing and I have already justified the two dollars for its amazing services. It i very nice to receive such incredible high quality programming and lesson giving together- Justin you freaking rock! I recommend this app with the highest of honors, could not be happier with how well this app will be able to take me to where I want to be musically.
Good Idea, Poorly Designed. Some may find use in this app, but as a novice I think it’s too difficult and it only gets harder. After almost every question, it switches up the key and octave. There is no option to limit keys or octaves. This confused me. After using the app for 12 hours, I was convinced that I was tone deaf. Level one (easiest) starts off by playing a root note then another note and asks you to guess the second note played, which is either a perfect fourth or fifth. Those are, in my opinion, the two hardest notes to identify in the major scale because they’re the furthest notes from the roots. It should have started off with R, 2, 3, 6, 7, Octave all in one key; instead it does exactly the opposite of this. I have a few other gripes as well, but if these two problems were fixed I probably would have been satisfied with my purchase. I downloaded another app which was free and it’s infinitely better. It starts off in C major with options for R, 2, 3, & 4. I learned more in 10 minutes with that app than I did in a week with this one. Turns out I’m not dumb, this app is. The only person who would benefit from this is someone with a great ear or a masochist. Unfortunately I do not have a great ear which is why I bought this app in the first place. It’s too bad, I really wanted to like it, but for my purposes it’s totally useless. If anyone is interested the other app is called Functional Ear Trainer. It’s terrific.
It's a game?. The way this is presented completely ruined it for me. First, it's not very intuitive to use, and second, the fact that this is considered a game with recorded scores cheapens it. I'll keep looking for a better interval ear trainer.
Phenomenal app.. Interval training at will and on the go without the need for an instrument. The ability to customize your own training regimen allows you to focus on specific problem areas. The app is a bargain for the price, same as almost anything Justin offers on his website. If you are looking for a serious and easy to use ear training app this one is for you.
Helpful for ear training. Does a nice job with aural training
Great way to train. I’m really enjoying training my ear with this app. My only suggestion thus far is to add an option, perhaps only in training mode, to replay a missed interval. When I miss one I find myself wanting to hear it again so that I can train my ear properly.
Use in conjunction with Justin's web site. To take full advantage of this, you should first watch the videos on JustinGuitar and then work with the app at the corresponding level. Without the videos, it would be very difficult and frustrating to train the ear. However, when you couple the videos reference to a song that starts with the root and the major third, it helps your mind remember that interval and then the app is a super resource to drilling it home.
No instructions on how to use!. I purchased this app because I love Justin’s guitar course. But can’t figure out how to use it. Every link I try to get usage info is either dead or just tells me how great the app is without any instructions. Very frustrating!!
Great little app!. Wow, I am making great progress using this app. I love the trainer mode! Really great job. I would like to have a review button so when I misidentify an interval I can listen to it again and get it in my head instead of the app moving onto the next test.
Needs to be updated to run in IOS 11. Can’t run in IOS 11
So unintuitive. Aweful. I gladly pay for apps, but this was just a donation that turns me away from Justin Guitar. Wasted time trying to figure it out, text information is bad. Video was worse!
Tip for beginner ears. As i was finding this app difficult at first since it changes key with every question, i found if you take your guitar and find the interval on the fret board and compare it to the surrounding intervals to really hear the difference in pitches, this has been an amazing way to kill multiple birds with one stone, you familiarize yourself with the fretboard, understand scale construction and of course train your ear.
I ~love~ Justin but this app is garbage. This has zero internal documentation and it took me half an hour to understand what it even meant. Just a poorly devised app.
Game. It not a real trainer. It's a game for kids. It will teach you nothing. Total waste....I was going to get the Metronome app but after seeing this is just a game not going to.
Read this if you need help!. When I initially opened the app I was confused on what to do. (I’m a slow minded individual lol) Here’s how to work the app- Level 1: Begin on the screen with the fretboard. Play the sound and decide if it’s a 4th or 5th interval. Choose your answer by either selecting the 4 or 5. If you picked correctly the button will turn green. If incorrect it will flash red. Eventually, once you answer enough correctly it will move you on to the next level. I highly recommend going over to Justin guitars website and learning ear training before attempting this. It is a frustrating and rewarding experience to learn! 🙂 I’ve only gone up to the second level but I will update if anything changes on the app. Have a wonderful day! -Viv
Simply amazing.. Thank you Justin for taking the time to develop a set of amazing apps! Use it on the bus on my way to school (as well as the Note Finder).
Perfect app for ear training. If you’re looking to develop and maintain your ear, there’s nothing better than this app. Easy to use, practical and fun. Highly recommended.
Love it. I learn so much from Justin. I'm grateful for this App. Works great.
Huh?. No idea how this is supposed to work. I am pretty good at intervals and was looking to improve, but this makes no sense. Please reply because I would love to support your work, but never wanted my $1.99 back so badly! Afraid to try your other apps now.
Needs work. The game interface is a pain. Get rid of it, or allow turning off so you don't have to go through it. Also, I purchased his and the fretboard note finder. Neither shows up in iTunes like all other apps - even after transferring purchases, or allows transfer to other devices. Otherwise, I like the functionality.
Need landscape rotation.. Never use apps that dont rotate. That inconveniences me.
Amazing but One Important Problem!. I really love this app..this is amazing and a necessity for my training. I can’t thank you enough. However there is one problem, on the descending 4th and 5th intervals I think it is wrong. If the starting note is on the 5th fret, 4th string...the 4th interval should be on the 3 fret, 3 string... while the 5th should be the 5th fret, 3 string. I think it is wrong on the app and opposite. Please fix this if it is broken, because it will screw up people’s hearing in the future.
Just what I needed. This is a simple, easy to use app to help with my guitar interval training. If I want to practice one particular internal, I can do some training. Thanks Justin!
Just what i needed. Perfect in every way. I think the harmonic setting should be recorded with someone actually playing the intervals so they sound more natural. There should also be a tempo change for the melodic setting
Love it. All three apps from Justin are top educational quality and value. Outstanding!

Finally. I have been looking for a good interval training app, this works great.
Good app. A good app. Justin guitar app will not do everything, but it is worth the investment in time and cheap price. i would suggest using in conjunction with "ear Trainer" and "right note" apps for an all round ear training regime. "Music theory pro" or "MTP" is also good.
Ear the difference. The difference I noticed after a few weeks of using this app is amazing. I'd highly recommend giving it a go.
"Best of the best'' Love it. Justin you are a hero for providing your service on donation bases, not many people on earth do that. Beside my review is not based on your generosity it's based on apps performance. ITS THE BEST APP I HAVE OWNED.
Makes a big difference. This is a very well designed app that compliments the free ear training lessons on justinguitar perfectly. I didn't realise how poor my interval recognition was and this has helped significantly.

Not compatible for iOS 11. Loved the app, but it’s been phased out by iOS. Wish it was compatible because it really helped my understanding of music
Antony. Great for interval training. I've never had any ear training so this is helping me to sharpen my ears.
Not working!. Love Justin’s videos but I just bought the app and it doesn’t work.
No longer works. Not updated to 64 bit, so will not run on iOS 11 👎👎
Functional with glitches and missing feature. It does work. At times however it does not respond to touch input to select an interval. The Back button still works. Annoying. Wish it had an automatic mode where it played interval then told answer after a few seconds. Could use this while driving or before falling asleep. Ideally, we could adjust how many times it plays before revealing result and allow config of time between.
