NHL Comments & Reviews 2026
Almost There. Video quality is excellent but sometimes load times are slow and the app crashes on every device I have when loading highlights of games just concluded, particularly on the Smart TV versions. It would also be nice if those highlight recaps provided some context before each segment as to what is going on in the game at the time, as in whether a team is on the power play, what time of which period it starts from, etc. Also, non-scoring chance related events like player injuries, fights, etc. that give provide more of the feel of the game would be appreciated. I would also say that during live broadcasts, I’m okay watching the full complement of commercials rather than the “Commercial break in progress” screen, especially if that helps bring the price down!
Coverage. Lifelong fan, entire family. We all watch We are bruins fans but don’t hold that against us. Born in Mass and grew up in Vt where it was easier to a Habs game than it was anything else. Satellite dishes turns to Primestar then DirectV and things got a lot easier. Then cable…… then we moved to the Washington DC area. Started buying the NHL package so we could watch our Bruins. Then Covid screwed up everything, sorry bad joke. My parent live in Myrtle, I live in Delaware, and my two boys live in corners or PA. We don’t use cable anymore we Roku. We pay for ESPN, Fubo, tried NESN (then they figured out I was in DE), and most recently needed to get sling to watch games on TNT, TBS, CNN, CCCP and DISNEY, some of that is fake news. BUT the point is accessibility to televised games has gotten a lot harder and more expensive. I would easily pay $200 a year for the package even if all I got was bruins games. $300 if you could promise they would win more. Bottom line, we need online streaming in ONE spot. Maybe even give an option to purchase ALL Games or even better a packages PER TEAM. I think you guys, by trying to reach a larger audience, have alienated some of your most diehard fans. Oh, and tell the refs to ease up on Marchand
Great game & news updates but in-app use needs work. Love this for game and news updates on my favorite teams and players (much better than the ESPN app), however the clunkiness of some features while in-app leave me frustrated. I'm no tech expert but I think it's just a lack of a little "polish". Might sound nit-picky but main reason for me only giving three stars is the video player. If the app is going to notify me about all these awesome videos to watch, then I feel the video player should be capable of showing them. More often than not I'm sitting, starting at a black screen, waiting for an ad to play, then again staring at a black screen, waiting for the video. There's so many apps out there capable of playing videos quickly and easily, why can't the NHL app do the same? I know it's not an issue of my cellular service. Please fix the video player! 5 stars in it for you after it's fixed!
It’s a Solid App... With a Few Flaws. I have been a long time flyers fan and I downloaded this app to follow the team better. It allows me to do so by notifying me about scores and news articles, but there are some flaws. For example the “free games” on nhl premium (which is a scam anyway) are not free for everyone. Also, sometimes when I open the app while game is going on, it gives me a notification that I can watch a game live on NHL premium. However I CANNOT ACCESS ANYTHING ON THE APP until I click on the notification which sends me to a page to buy a subscription to NHL premium. It’s fine if it’s a one time glitch, but it is every time. There are also some smaller things, like how stats don’t include hit leaders, but the radio feature is nice and overall it is very customizable. So 4 stars, it could be better but it does its job
Crashes more than Chris Kreider does into Goalies. I use this app a lot to stream games because Xfinity is way too expensive and the games aren’t in HD... But if there was any other reliable options to watch I’d probably go with that. The NHL app works half of the time which is why I gave it three stars and no more. When the app works it’s awesome, 95% of the time the stream is clear and the other 5% is just because of our internet so I can’t blame them on that. I love how it’s set up where you can see standings, League news and news about your single team! BUT... And this is a big but, IT CRASHES HALF THE TIME, I’ll think to myself, “HMMM I wonder what the scores are tonight” and these are the three things that happen... It either just won’t load, the app will load and you’ll see the home screen for a second and then it’ll crash OR when I press to see the scores it crashes. I don’t mind having to google scores but isn’t the point of the app to make it easier on the users to have info and entertainment easily accessible? Also like 15% of the time when we try to stream it’ll say we’re streaming the game but it’ll just show the two team logos and the NHL shield in the middle and will do nothing... Again when the app works it’s great but I find it not working A LOT
New Update is Terrible. The newest update to the app is pretty terrible. Not only is the redesign of the main user interface unnecessary but they took out key features that were the reason I would use the app. For instance you seemly can no longer listen to the games via the radio meaning that now if I’m driving I can’t follow the games as I do not live where my home team plays. Second the information is pruned down from the stats page showing far less in the game view overall making it feel less important to look at the app. Finally in the settings in the list of all teams, the Colorado Avalanche aren’t present which just doesn’t make sense and I think it may be missing another team or two. Please bring back these older features that were loved and make the UI work as I encountered so many loading screen to nothing and blank white pages. Also please bring back a darker UI or night mode as the white is not enjoyable.
Game recaps buried. As has typically been the case, versions other than the iPad version allow the user to access Game Recaps with one click after selecting game under “Scores.” Better yet, those versions allow the user to go to Videos and then watch a series of Game Recaps without taking any action after clicking the first desired Game Recap. For some bizarre reason, the iPad version has eliminated the Game Recaps under the Videos section and, instead, Game Recaps available only if the user selects a game and then scrolls all the way through the Gamecenter write up to see the Recap vid at the bottom (after seeing who has done what in the narrative and individual play vid captions). The Game Recaps have to be one of the most popular features. Why make them hard to get to?
App or NHL?. Overall the app is pretty great, there are a few things I don’t like, but I don’t know if it’s more about the App or about NHL.. I don’t understand why it is I pay for NHL premium but still get stuck with blackout restrictions? As if the NHL doesn’t have the right to air it’s own games? The other thing I wish was different was the commercial breaks; they finally updated it after 6 years of it being the same, but why don’t they just show highlights or news stories from around the league during them? Seems like a great opportunity for fans to get updates, and not debate on if they should just go to bed between periods because intermission is so boring.
Drastic improvements. Original Review: This year they dropped support for ps3 and Xbox 360. Due to this I was given the opportunity to experience how terrible using the app to watch a replay is. No period start selection. Absolutely garbage scrubbing controls. The -10 sec button often reverts back to the beginning of the game. The one positive is the streaming feed has less jumps and quality drops than the console apps had during live games. Almost forgot the constant notifications telling you if you want to see the notification content to turn off “hide scores”. How about not sending score notifications instead when hide scores is set? Update: The casting video player is fantastic. 10 second buttons have been replaced with 30 second buttons that actually work. The slider is much smoother and loads the video perfectly and at the correct time that is showing when you lift your finger up. Would still love to see the addition of the period start selection and ceasing score notifications when scores are turned off but I’m very happy with the recent changes.
Amazing App, Also An Idea For The App. NHL is just an amazing app, you can watch live games, listen to commentary of live games, check standings, check players stats, check what happened in previous years, it’s just so amazing! I also have an idea for this app. Maybe you could add betting? My idea of it is that someone would create a bet, invite people to the bet (maybe you could add accounts too?) and they could add a winning prize, and a losing pay amount. (If you do add this, make sure to not let people scam on bets.) But that’s just an idea. If I could give this app 6 stars, I would. I don’t know how you wouldn’t like this app, but everyone has their own opinion. Keep up the good work, team! 👍
‘23-24 season update is BAD. I don’t know what the redesign was intended to achieve except the cosmetic revamp but I’ve been really struggling with this update for the Schedule tab (on team pages). Whoever designed it seems to not be a user? Or at best, is just unfamiliar with a range of users needs? The design is so hyper focused on presenting news that you all forgot about the bread and butter of what ppl open the app for in the first place. The calendar format was so much more informative - what do I care about having the dates as numbers (day of the week is not well represented this way), why should I have to pick the month I want to see (what happens at the end of the month? I see one future game and a whole list of completed games?) aka why should the schedule list not just be continuous, why are completed games at the end of the list instead of either greyed or called up by a checkbox or something, why are you no longer color coding home vs away games? ….the previous calendar schedule feature was the best representation of the most important information. Why change a perfect thing? I can’t say enough bad things about this one feature - it ruins the ENTIRE app experience. I effectively don’t need this app anymore, the only other feature I use is standings.
NHL RESPECT up in here. I have seen NHL players fight for social causes and I have seen them express their pain and their empathy for communities of ALL backgrounds. But I have never seen them interrupt games or disrespect our national anthem. They are the only professional sport who plays in front of their fans and does not force personal political views on people who spend good money to watch their favorite teams play. I support every one of their causes no matter what, and I know they support positive energy from their fans bc this league comes to play, and win. All of that deserves 5 stars on itself BUT this app is also very user friendly and informative especially for my home team when I am out on the road. Thank you NHL for keeping it sports and thank you to the developers who make this app possible. The behavior of the league and teams makes it really easy for me to choose the only sports app I will carry on my phone and the app makes it super friendly and easy for me to keep!! #NHL #GoAvsGo!!!
Wow. This is bad.. I’ve left probably less than a dozen negative reviews for anything in my life. I’m only motivated to do so when something comes across as just remarkably bad. Not in an employee did something bad on this visit kinda way but more like there is something fundamentally wrong with the organization kinda way. Did anyone look at this app and think this is what we want? To take an example, if I want to go look at the score of the last Islanders game I hit scores. It allows me to click the previous day on the banner of dates. If the game was two days ago I have to click the calendar icon and click one day at a time, check if the game was on that day. If not, click the calendar icon and repeat. Why can’t I swipe between dates? The front page looks like a video game and I don’t even know where to find news articles…. I’ll stop there.
Don’t buy into premium. The app itself is great, I would have given it 5 stars until I got suckered into trying premium to watch games. They give you a warning that you’re at the mercy of blackout restrictions. Okay, I won’t be able to watch EVERY game, that’s fine. I bought a subscription and immediately canceled (literally within minutes of the purchase) because the game I wanted to watch was blacked out, despite the notifications that if I got NHL premium I could be watching the game live. So I’m stuck with it for a month. All the games I’ve tried to watch so far, except for one, so that’s 1 out of 13 games that have been blacked out. What am I even paying for? And of course, every game gives me a notification every period to watch the action live on NHL premium. Every time it pops up it just angers me more. Especially when I know it’s a lie. Here’s an idea, don’t send out notifications that you could be watching the game live with premium if the game is backed out and you can’t actually be watching it live with premium.
Love My Panthers. My family and I have had Florida Panther season tickets for over 25 years. We have been through all the ups and downs with this team. At the moment it’s amazing to be a Cats fan. We have the most dedicated ownership that has revitalized our franchise and brought a level of stability it has never seen before. The Panthers are now a team that future Hall of Famers and the leagues elite choose to seek out to join our incredible young roster of current and future all-stars in their quest for a multi year Stanley Cup run. We have a management group lead by men of such integrity from our President to GM to Head Coach, they all lead this group of outstanding young stars on the ice and even better stars in our community!! It’s very easy to love the Panthers whole organization including all the wonderful people who work for the team like our account manager Austin to the sweet ladies who make the custom jerseys and all of the other staff that make the games an amazing experience each night.
Keeps me up to date. The NHL app has allowed me to keep up with pro hockey even though I live in an area where the sport isn’t followed much. The app allows me to customize what I want to be notified of for each of the five teams I follow, so if I only want to know when the Wild, Knights or Jets game begins but want scoring updates for the Penguins and Stars, I can do that. I can also listen to the live radio broadcast of any team in the league and read news stories about any team. The scores tab allows me to see what games are going on when and on what TV channel, so I can plan ahead. I have used this app for two seasons now, and I have found it extremely useful.
Took a step backwards. This app used to work great and this season has taken a huge step backwards. The user face is not user friendly at all. The app no longer works with Apple CarPlay so I cannot listen to games while driving. The thing that irritates me is they have now cut the goal scoring clips to only the goal… so the video ends after less than 10 seconds where they used to show the TV replay after the goal so you could actually see what happened and they let you listen to the TV announcers play by play of the goal, now we just get the actual 5 second clip of the goal. Terrible. I also cannot stand the display of current goal scores. The old app used to tell you what time and in which period they scored, now they just show the total score after the goal and the order it is presented in is backwards. Any NHL fan should be disappointed by the updates to this app. Please change it back or at least improve upon the app.
Nearly unusable.. DO NOT USE THE NHL APP. USE THE ESPN APP INSTEAD. THIS APP IS ONLY HERE TO INCREASE AD REVENUE FOR THE LEAGUE AND ITS INVESTORS. This app is just as the title states, nearly unusable. The format from the previous version wasn’t great but it was okay for looking at league statistics, standings, rosters, players, and most importantly SCHEDULES. So let’s expound a bit on each of these. The schedule view is about as far from user friendly as can be. Users have to tap through multiple drop down menus just to view upcoming games for that month alone. If they want to view previous games, they have to scroll all the way down the page and then select the month (if they know it) for the previous games they want to see. Even then the box scores from those games are impossible to access once the next game has been played or started. Say goodbye to quick access to player stats, profiles, etc. Users are redirected to an external page, which loads at about 3x slower than the previous version. I’m assuming the end goal was to generate site traffic and increase ad revenue because there’s just no possible way this was built with the user in mind. The developers have taken something totally fine and altered it beyond use. Shame on Bettman for driving away fans. First black outs, distracting ads that move on the boards, and now this trashy broken app.
Why not?. I realize that there is a certain bias against teams in non traditional hockey markets. However, there were several days during the first round when there were no stories at all about Carolina Hurricanes. There were also days when the only mention of Carolina was as the afterthought in the coverage of Boston. When there are 32 teams playing, I can understand that maybe not all teams could be covered in 30 stories. Yet the team that’s being snubbed has 2 Stanley Cup appearances with one Cup Title; they have been in the playoffs for the past several years and finished as one of the top teams this year. We don’t want anything more than the respect they have earned as one of the better teams.
PLEASE READ PLEASE. Ok so I know you can change the app icon and I’ve done that and changed it to the sharks but it’s different than all the rest. I wish that you would change it to look like all the others where it would be the sharks logo and have a teal background rather that the white and the nhl on top. I don’t know why this bugs me but it does. Please fix this in the next update. Other than that I really enjoy this app. It gives me lots of stats and other thing other apps don’t. I like that when my team scores it plays their goal horn for a notification. It’s really cool. This is a really great app and nice to use for when I want to see the latest hockey news and stuff. GO SHARKS!!!!!!! -Sharks fan 🦈🦈🦈🦈
Mixed feelings. Some really good features in the redesign, but need some old accessibility back. While using the app recently I was on the scores tab looking up the previous nights games. What is really cool is that under the date it shows a small number of how many games are being played that day, the value of this may vary by individual. However while on the schedule page for my favorite team the layout is atrocious and was much better suited as a calendar style format, there is a lot of bouncing around between looking at previously games at the bottom of the list and the upcoming games at the top. The previous design allowed a calendar view which updated the W/L record and was easy to read for the entire month in one glance.
Issues Every Year, No Customer Service. I’ve been paying for the nhltv subscription for years and it’s the same awful experience every year. No matter which device I’m streaming a game on with everything up to date and wifi in top shape, game streams are garbage. It’s the same every season, especially in the first month where it’s unwatchable. I have screenshots of my “customer service” experience for 4 straight years where they can’t do anything about the app reverting alert settings to default constantly and the game streams being mostly unwatchable. If you pay for this service you’ll get real familiar with all the error codes very quickly, but don’t expect customer service to be on the same page as you even once. They’ll have you do basic troubleshooting over and over again until you can’t stand it anymore while offering no sort of discount or refund for this lackluster and frustrating experience. No wonder the NHL can’t compete with the other major sports leagues, it’s own app and subscription service can’t even provide a reliable source for fans to watch games or get news. If you have another service available to you to watch out of market games that isn’t pirating, I would highly recommend going that route.
Decent App but Faulty. I love the layout of the app, the scores section and playoff section is clean and easy to follow. I also like the addition of the videos section under latest. My issue is with crashing. I will be reading an article and halfway through it will crash and/or send me back to the main loading page of the app, causing me to have to scroll through and find the article and pick back up where I left off. Very frustrating. I used to be able to easily cast games and recaps to my chrome cast. I could select watch live and it would give me the live broadcast. Now if I’m trying to watch a live game (I’m an NHL TV subscriber) it will start from the beginning and not let me pick up with the game live. Also, if I do stream to a device from my phone, it will crash when I’m done and I will have to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work again, which means I have to log in, select my settings and preferences again. All in all, it is a great app for articles (even if you have to keep going back to them), videos (as long as your not streaming them) and general use. Highly recommend using the app on any other device than mobile to utilize any video feature.
App Is Hilariously Bad. NHL really outdid themselves with this one. Not one person enjoys this new update, but in typical NHL fashion, they don’t do anything to appease to their fans and make the league and highlights easier to watch. Any functionality the old app had (which wasn’t much) they completely stripped from this update in an effort to make the app “look cooler and more modern”. Can’t click on box scores of old games, can’t click on players names in box scores of live games to see who some guys even are, can’t see healthy scratches in the box score; and truly I am just scratching the surface on issues this app has—I could type for hours. It is TRULY not usable for any interactive hockey fan trying to follow a game. It’s like they let a 65 year old intern to come in and try and make the worst app possible. The funniest part is there is probably a team of people somewhere at NHL that signed off to actually allow this update to be published. Like do these people watch the game of hockey and try to interact with their app? Apparently not, and It’s hilarious how tone deaf they are. I have deleted the app and am going to use ESPN app til they figure this one out (not counting on it).
Yet another game ruined. I'm updating my review because with this latest update, I have had yet another game ruined for me. I started to play a game on my iPad that I had been watching on my AppleTV. I had intended to fast forward to where I was, but the super-effective "jump forward 30 seconds" button wasn't showing up. (don't even get me started on their horrible imitation of "VCR controls". Yes, I know I said "imitation" instead of "implementation." A VCR has a fast forward button, not a "jump ahead 30 seconds" button.) Anyway, I stopped the game to try again, and when it started to play, I was greeted with a banner across the top of the video (at the BEGINNING of the game) telling me that the 3-on-3 overtime was being sponsored by EA Sports NHL '18. Great. I've seen up to the middle of the second, but now I know regulation will end in a tie. Thanks, NHL. I'm so glad I pay $112 a year to have games ruined. Come on, NHL, get your act together.
Update is Awful. I’ve had the NHL App for a quite a few seasons now, and it’s been great. However, the new update is horrible. I have a pretty busy life, so I can’t always sit down and watch a game. The radio feature was great for this because I could still listen to the game. The radio feature has since been removed with the update, and I know a lot of people are upset over it. The live scores have also taken a hit with the update. The timer is no longer as accurate, and it does not tell you if a team is on a power play, 3 on 5, etc. I tried to look at the stats of a player last night, and it took me to the NHL WEBSITE. Personally, if you’re going to have an app, everything should be IN the app. Taking me to the NHL website is ridiculous. Not to mention that they have limited the amount of teams you can follow. As someone who likes to keep updated on many teams, this is an awful feature. You used to be able to favorite and follow as many teams as you’d like. Now, you can only follow four and favorite one of those four. Overall, the new update is absolutely terrible. It changed a good functioning app to one that is practically useless. They oversimplified everything to the point that there’s no need for it. I could probably get more information on Twitter or X at this point.
Blah to garbage.. The App used to be alright. But updates have made it pretty terrible. Navigation has becoming even less intuitive. But my biggest complaint is the audio option to listen to the games. They updated it in a way that was a huge step backwards in three major ways: 1 - when listening to a game, you can no longer do anything else within the app. If you exit the audio stops. It’s not just not being able to read articles. You can’t follow the gameflow or anything else for the game you’re listening to. 2 - in previous years, there used to be an option for which feed you wanted to listen to. Two teams, two radio feeds, each local to the contenders. If you want to listen to your team’s commentators great. If you wanted a choice in case those guys are boring, it was there….. not anymore. One and done. 3 - and the most unacceptable, there hasn’t been a single time that I have tried to listen to games this season where they had the wrong audio linked to the game i clicked. And I’m not saying the app says I’ll be listening to the Chicago feed against Detroit and getting Detroit’s feed. I’m saying it will be the link for the Chicago feed for Chicago v Detroit and the feed will be a Pittsburgh local feed for Pens v Caps. That’s just pathetic. Amateur Hour folks. Disappointing. . . . **Update** They seem to have fixed the first of my three audio complaints.
New update is disappointing. The new updates seem to be pushing Connor Bedard news and the latest news for my team doesn’t even update weekly. No more “Listen” feature for games. Can’t click on players names in the box score to check out their profile/history. And I really miss how when players scored the players who assisted in the goal were also clearly visible. The app is only showing goal scorers now. Keeping my fingers crossed that this update improves over the next couple of weeks. I think the only positive of the update so far is that pictures of players have already been updated as opposed to halfway through the season like in previous years.
New Update 21 Sep 2023. This is, without a doubt, the worst update this app has had. All of the layouts for each section are horrible. Almost anything I try to tap takes me to my browser and out of the app. There was nothing wrong with the app the way it was. The only thing I wish it had was a dark mode. That is literally the only good thing in the entirety of this new UI for the app. Everything else is horrendous. The layout is awful, I have to pick between my team and league wide news on the “Latest” tab. It was much easier just having the home be your desired team with their Articles and videos, then if you wanted the rest of the NHL, you just tap on “Latest”. It’s absolutely horrible and I want it to go back to previous UI in its entirety. I’d deal with the blinding white screen over this complete garbage.
Go back to old UX. This is the UX equivalent of over-engineering. It was perfect before. Please update the app with some of the old features, such as… I want to view my team first when I open the app. The view of the team’s schedule was perfect at the top. I always knew when my team was playing because I looked at the upcoming schedule every time I opened the app. 99% of users are not interested in reading the news when the open the app. Speaking of the schedule, the schedule page is awful. Just organize the games by date. There doesn’t need to be a different page for each month. You don’t need to show this months completed games at the bottom. Default the standings page to “Wildcard” standings. It’s the most relevant. I want to know where my team is in relation to the playoff picture. Condense news and video back into one tab, and give my team their own tab again. News and video are one in the same, and I don’t care about the other 31 teams nearly as much as I care about my team, and I’m sure every other hockey fan can say the same. I understand the urge to keep things fresh, but the old version of the app was flawless. I would go back to the drawing board and restore many of the old version’s features and UX. And also, if whoever reads this has any connection to ESPN, please push to bring back “In The Crease” with Arda Ocal. That show was the perfect way to keep tabs on the whole league, and Arda added entertainment value like no one else.
Awful app. I’m a massive NHL fan who for some reason purchases the full access every year but this may just be the last. This app is a train wreck. It takes sometimes 2 minutes just for the app to load. Once it finally opens you may or may not be automatically logged out for some reason but good luck trying to log in because sometimes sometimes when you do it will say you just logged out so you have to try about 3 more times. If you’re lucky enough to get past that good luck trying to touch those millimeter wide play buttons to watch any goal highlights. If you used to use this app on ps4/xbox you know how unbearable that experience was. But on mobile it’s not as bad but still glitchy and way too spotty. Whoever makes this app needs to maybe start using it on a regular basis and fix the horrible bugs that have been in it for a long time.
Major Improvements Needed. There seems to be no clear way to edit account information. No clear way to delete an account. Trying to search for a league in the bracket challenge doesn’t work. You type in the league name that definitely exists and after clicking search it goes right back to the screen you were on. The “share” button does nothing when trying to share through email. You can’t invite anyone once you create the league, only when creating it. If you forgot someone’s email the oops! Looks like they have to navigate through like 150 pages of leagues if you didn’t make your league starting with the letter A or Z. Two members of my league for some reason have no name! Just blank slots. Can’t fix it because there’s no way to do so! Please look into these issues
New app is garbage.. The new app updates are completely awful. The biggest change being even if you have hide scores turned on so you can watch the game after work, there will be a big article on the homepage with the titles that tell you the winners. Also no longer seeing which channel the game is on the Home Screen, to know if I need to use ESPN+ or a local channel to watch the game. That info is now buried in the game page which you have to allow scores to show to read. No more calendar view for each team. You have to scroll day by day to see if a team is playing. Lots more issues but these are my main three gripes. Bring back no titles on articles when score is hidden, bring back tv channels on the scores today page, and bring back a calendar so I don’t have to scroll through 60 days of games to see if there’s a game when friends and family are coming to town!
Read this, it will take 2 minutes.. To start off, I love all American sports, Like Basketball, Football, Baseball, and, of course, Hockey. I have the NBA app, NFL app, MLB app, and this NHL app. Of all of these, I can safely say that NHL has got my favroite set-up. It's easy to use and really worth it if you're a fan of Hockey. What I don't like is that you can't watch Hockey in the app, you need either Bally Sports for your location, or ESPN+. I do like how they post a 4-10 minute video about all of the goals scored the previous day, and I like the standings section. Another feature I like is that it allows you to customize the Icon you have for the app. You can either have a certian team or the NHL Logo. It's really cool and easy to change. Overall I say get this app, it's good, easy to use, and really helpful for keeping up with scores and the "Gameflow" Feature is nice, too. Thanks for reading! Have a nice day.
Premium is a Joke. Good app, premium is terrible. When I bought a year subscription it told me it would black out 3 teams. I figured, why not? I can watch all the hockey I want and catch my team games after 48 hours if I want to see the game play. Well, what they mean is these three teams will always be blacked out for you. If a game is showing on a channel in your area, well that gets blacked out too. Oh and those 3 teams, it’s actually 5 that are blacked out. The real kicker is, 3 of the 5 teams ARE NEVER SHOWN IN MY AREA! If you can black out other games because a channel in my area is showing the game, then you can show me the teams that are not shown in my area. Get the cable networks out of your pocket NHL. You are letting them ruin the sport for your fans.
More articles needed…. You have at least close to 1000 regular roster players in the NHL yet hardly any good articles about these players. When the season ends, other then the first two weeks of free agency, there is almost nothing exciting to read about. For example we know my Lightning won the cup two years in a row. There should be WAY more coverage of them out celebrating with Stanley. You need reporters who will go chat up all these rising stars too besides the established ones. And some interviews with players who have been bought out and have to start over again. I want to know what’s going on with Zach Parise!
Long time subscriber. I have been a subscriber for 5 years and I love it. I dont experience the issues some others report. The games cast easily from my phone to my smart tv with crystal clear clarity. I travel often for work and even over cellular, games are clean and clear. Sorry for the others experiencing trouble, but I’ve never had any. The subscription works great on my apple TV as well. The game flow charts are fun to watch during games. Works great on my apple watch too. I like being able to watch any game I want (except for my home town Blue Jackets) and as a hockey junkie, I typically watch an eastern time zone game and then a western time zone game most nights.
Happy radio is back; still glitchy and betting odds is a unwelcome addition. I’m very glad the radio was brought back after many complained including myself. I usually listen to games that aren’t otherwise available and love the Leafs’ broadcast! That said, the app still has major issues with not updating scores during the games, I have to restart the app just to update the score. I’m extremely disappointed in the NHL for deciding to introduce betting odds for each game on the app. The seamless integration of betting into every NHL experience has gotten out of control, and the “chill” presentation of gambling is the worst part of it. Betting among friends or occasional betting on some games as an aware and in-control adult is one thing. But this large-scale corporatized gambling is being marketed to feel like it’s no big deal to young people. Seeing people even younger than me(mid-20s) get into actual financial trouble because they treated betting like fantasy football is horrible. This is REAL money, not just some game on your screen, and so many don’t really get that until it’s too late and they’re in a really bad spot. The NHL needs to stop contributing to this issue.
The app is useless after the recent update. The NHL app for iPhone is such an awful update that I no longer want to use it at all. The user interface is awful: there is no longer a calendar page view for team season schedules. There is no longer any obvious way to add dates to icalender for iPhone, nothing is easy to find any more and the user interface doesn't flow naturally and function how a user would expect it to. The app was stripped down of any aesthetic appearance and there is no useful information about favorite teams directly when you open the app anymore. On top of all that, my favorite team's custom app logo was changed for the maple leafs. NHL should have never even touched the app. I'm deleting the app and I’ll Use ESPN from now on. Whoever designed and approved this most recent update for the NHL app royally screwed it up. It's worthless now.
Terrible update. Worst update ever for an app. Individual team news stories have to be found now by searching through an old story and then scrolling down to find any new ones. Even NHL articles are now limited. Player stats are “dumbed down” and no longer include give aways or take aways. For some reason, the NHL doesn’t think player stats are that important. Don’t dumb down the game for us! There’s no link for audio radio stations that broadcast the game. Game info no longer has the lineup. Oh, there are tons of advertising and links to bet on games, links to buy tickets and apparel from the NHL shop. It is easy to see where the effort and $$ went when doing this update. It’s to get more money. It certainly wasn’t to improve experience using the app. Overall, this is now a waste of space on my phone. It’s now only good for checking the schedule for games. Have fun being frustrated if you install this.
Game flow update is really insightful feature!. I have had the NHL app for almost three years, and this is perhaps the best update to the app so far. I also have the ESPN app to follow the NBA, and it shows real time graphs of the game flow. I was hoping that the NHL app developers would add a similar feature. And my wish came true! Although this feature is still relatively new, it offers a lot of potential. In the future, I hope the NHL app developers continue to add similar statistical features to the app for us hockey nerds out there. For instance, there should be a feature that shows where on the ice each team scored their goals. Kudos to NHL app for this awesome update! 👍
Bad radio interface!. They’ve changed the way you access the radio streams and it is a major step backwards! If you enter a radio stream you cannot leave that blank page without closing the stream! I often would open the box score while listening to the radio but I can no longer do that because I can’t use any other aspect of the app if I want to listen to the game on the radio. Also hate that I have to scroll through all the teams and divisions in order to find a game! You used to be able to tap the radio icon and it would just offer you the games currently on, now, instead you have to scroll through huge logos of all the teams— whether they’re playing or not— (I have a big phone screen and I still only got like 3 teams at a time) to find a game I’m looking for. Also, I would occasionally listen to games of teams I don’t usually follow because they were featured in the list of games currently streaming. So that will never happen again with the new radio stream interface.
They took an efficient app and made it awful.. Allow me to preface this review with saying that I never thought to write a review in my life on the App Store. Having said that, the clowns that are in charge of this app must have been under the influence (or two) when they decided to make these changes. Instead of going on on about how incompetent this development team is, I will simply point each thing they removed/changed since last season, see below; • When you click on lineup cards, you can’t click on each individual player that takes you to his stats. • When you go to look at the individual stats of a player, you can’t click on them. Last season and before each players name was a hyper link to a profile page with individual stats and awards. • The scores don’t update on the score table, you have to click on each individual game. • Constantly you will see “PP” logos next to a team when there is no penalty called. • In addition to the previous point, some times they will write an absurd amount of minutes next to the “PP” such as “7:00”!! • When you click on the score to see who scored, they’re many instances where they’ll inaccurately write “SHG” or “PPG” when it was either neither or one or the other. I’m not upset that they made a mistake (albeit many), I’m upset that it’s December 8th and they still didn’t change/fix or address any of this. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Radio broadcast interface is borderline unusable.. The update required to use the app at the beginning of the season buried the radio broadcast access deep in the far corner of the app. Hasn’t been perfect in the past but did the job located at the top of the homepage with some ability to pause and skip backwards. For some reason that I can’t figure out, they decided to take something that works well enough and make it frustratingly more difficult to use. I would understand if they were trying to “improve” the app, but it seems they went out of their way to make the experience worse and less accessible. Now, not only do you have to go to a different page altogether to use the audio, you cannot access the rest of the app while listening to the audio of a game or else the audio stops. Utterly incomprehensible why they would change something that worked well (to nhl standards) in previous seasons. I’m used to incompetence but it’s as if they’re actively trying to make it more difficult to experience NHL games. It’s as if they don’t even want you to use the app at all. Downright incredible. For the love of all that is holy, just put it back to the way it was and stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
Naples FL Blues fan. I am a lifelong St. Louisan and Blues fan. At the age of 55, I retired to Naples FL. Blues TV coverage is hard to get down here, so I have reverted to my childhood days when only a handful of games were on TV in the 70’s, I follow the Blues on radio. I used to love hearing Dan Kelly call the Blues games, I wish his son John was on the radio broadcast rather than TV but Kirbs calls a good game. So on to the review, this site is excellent at keeping me up on all Blues news and info. I also enjoy being able to see all the game recaps to visualize that which I didn’t get to see during the radio broadcast. I highly recommend this app to every Blues fan!
update removed all convenient features. This update completely ruined the app, the team Home Screen, team monthly calendar, daily game schedule, game scores, and so much more we’re all pointlessly overhauled. Instead of having an intuitive user interface with easy to find pages and plenty information, the app is slow, clunky, pointlessly confusing, and missing many useful features. Now if you click on a game to check the score, you can see who scored but it won’t show assists, I click the box with the player who scored the goal to see if I can find out who assisted the goal, but it brings me to their team website imbedded in the app for no reason. Removing team schedule pages and the monthly team calendar were two more pointlessly terrible design choices. The app was fine how it was.
Video playback issues. In general, the app is great. BUT. It's almost impossible to watch a game when the resolution drops to the point of looking like a distant video through a windshield on a rainy day for several minutes at a time, the audio cuts in and out entirely, and sometimes just freezes indefinitely until the app is force closed. It would be great to see a 15 second skip button option since the 30 second skip passes over the whistle to faceoff game time pause most of the time. Last but not least, if trying to watch a game from behind, be aware that sometimes the skip feature forwards to live, so spoilers aren't out of the question.
More variety. I’d like to see the app reflect more of the options offered on the desktop website. For the news section I’d love for their to be a way to filter out based on senior writers, trade deadline tracker, scouting reports, etc. There is a lot of material offered through the website that app users really cannot see. The app also used to offer an option where you could filter videos by game recaps, goals, saves, etc. I’d love to be able to just select the type of video and just run through a bunch of them. The app runs super well with very few bugs but for users who use the app consistently there could be more for you to select and filter through. Other than that, it’s amazing and the layout, design and way it works is wonderful.
Getting Worse. The media on this app is getting way worse. And fast… Goal replays get cut down so minimal that the clip ends almost immediately after the puck crosses the goal line. They no longer include all of the different replay camera angles and slow motion shots that get broadcasted live, so you just get a tiny clip of the live goal and that’s it. Most of the post-game interviews do not get posted. They might post a coach and MAYBE one player. I’ve even notice them not even posting the coach’s interview on multiple occasions. So many team-relevant news-worthy stories just don’t get posted to the relevant team’s ‘news’ section anymore. If you were to follow the team’s instagram page, you would get 10-times more relevant team updates than the NHL app provides. Even big news doesn’t get posted to this app. Overall, looks like this app is speeding quickly in the wrong direction. I’d bet my money that it’s managed by people who are in no way hockey fans (or even sports fans of any kind). And it shows. Currently in ‘sad’ status, but the app could easily dip into ‘pathetic’ status soon. Can’t wait!
Almost Infuriating. The app is designed well and it helps me keep up-to-date with the standings and games for my favorite teams - as well as the rest of them. The notification on this app are what make it unbearable. Despite the number of times I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, every time being particularly careful to update the settings, I still can’t avoid getting 20 spurious “news” notifications a day. You have the ability to subscribe to the news - for the entire league as well as individual teams - which presumably add to the number of notifications that you can’t turn off. I will almost certainly turn notifications off for the entire app, even though I still want to the scoring updates for the teams that matter to me. Figure it out NHL.

Terrible update. I don’t know who let their kid design the new update but change it back!!! It is so annoying to navigate around now and information is not easily readable. Also is nhl radio not available through the app anymore ? Terrible update.
New update doesn’t show scores. The app seems fun but annoyingly the scores page (the most important and my most frequently used) is not working. Have tried re-downloading, restarting phone and signing in and out to no luck… frustrating when the old app worked perfectly
Why did you change it!??. This app was fine the way it was. Now the calendar doesn’t work properly. It’s difficult to navigate to previous scores. I am in Australia, the times and dates are incorrect. Can no longer access player bios. The previous version worked fine. Why have you done this?
Game spoilers. I have the hide score settings on so I can watch the game without knowing the result. As soon as I click videos - there's the SCORE...that says "game recap: TBL 4 TOR 1". What's the point of hide scores if you can STILL see the scores?! Paid 150 USD to watch games and the results already known. Ruined my subscription. And please truncate the "commercial break in progress" and remove it on replays. The NBA app does it right..why can't you?
Schedule issues. Scores always come up with previous day. Then when you click on schedule the app glitches and just starts going backwards through the days.
Too many playback issues. It’s nice when it works and you can actually live stream games, which is of course what you’re paying for. Half the time the video quality is so bad it’s not worth watching. And new bad things randomly happen every now and then, like randomly going back to the beginning of the feed (where it says “Game will begin shortly”) in the middle of a game, or the sound being out of sync. I’m sitting here angry because my team just scored three goals in a short time frame and I missed all of them because of some stupid playback issue. That should be exciting happy times, not frustrating!
👎. Will not stream live games to tv but will stream the ads. Go figure. Attempted to watch live games on phone and the feed continually drops out and I have to keep reopening the stream. Phone and tv are new with latest updates with great internet connection. Sweet app! 👎
Couldn't use.. Purchased the NHL TV subscription. Every time I tried to watch a game it kept taking me back to the purchasing page, I'd truly to restore and it kept coming up unknown error. Contact support and all I got was generated generic uninstall/ reinstall advice that did absolutely nothing. Very poor.
App crashing. I have to keep deleting and reinstalling the app because it keeps crashing and won’t open
Great up but...... Love the app use it everyday. However, it lacks performance in Australia. Quality of picture is below par and buffering often apparent. I am on fibre at 100mb/s connection. Please fix it’s been too many years!
Ads. I paid good money to be able to watch all the games, ...so why oh why must I be continually bob are definitely with ads for the product I have already paid for? The same “cellys” and “ unbelievable saves” over and over.
Improvement commercial break. Think you can improve your resume of good play and update on regular bases - like every weeks - Sometime very boring to see all the time the same one and as we are having a split Canada \USA will be appreciated to see more from team of other division Cheers
Don’t subscribe. The app is great if you are using it for free but even if you a loyal customer you are just another cow to milk, poor customer service, it’s better to pay a little more and get the service with subscription
Awesome, but video can be a bit choppy.. Absolutely love the app and content, but it is time they put a CDN node in Australia. The picture is rarely at HD, it often buffers and picture quality chops and changes a fair bit. I’m on cable, so this can only be down to a lack of CDN or CDN quality. Come on! Make it happen!
The best app ever. You can listen to any game you want and you get a free game to watch every day, no other sports app does that.
Archived Games. I used to love this app and nhl service and then a 3weeks ago I stopped being able to watch archived games (the only thing that gets me through a long offseason) I tried contacting customer service and have had radio silence from them for over 2 weeks. Really disappointed with the service and response I have received.
Where’s the CarPlay. The best thing about the app before the update was the layout and the ability to use it through CarPlay. Why would you remove that feature. It was far easier to cycle through games without having to touch the phone.
Better. The design is better than it has ever been. Annoying that Closed Captions is on by default for every game. Hopefully that gets fixed in an update.
Love the app. This app allows me to watch my favourite team live from Australia. I am a Canadian living abroad and would be lost without this. It’s clear and on point so thank you NHL app!
Pop up adds. I would rate this app as 5 star but the latest version has annoying pop up add that even add blockers cannot stop.
Great service. Hope it is as accessible when you switch to ESPN
Please fix the time zone issues. The time zone is completely messed up in the new app released for the 23/24 season. For example, it is 11:30 am on Monday, November 6th, 2023 in Melbourne, Australia, the app is showing today is Sunday. The small number under the date shows there are 4 games today. However, the games shown underneath are the Devils/Blackhawks and the Golden Knights/Ducks games (with the Devils/Blackhawks games shown to be in-progress with a 2:1 score). In short, the old app worked perfectly in this regard. The new app is confusing at best, and outright frustrating to use sometimes. Please fix it!?
Frustrating. Playback is very rarely in HD in Australia. Game replays aren’t edited so you have to manually fast forward through intermission/ads or sit through a silent screen that says “ad break in progress”. The bare minimum is put into this streaming service which costs a premium price.
Poor. Trying to watch the game and the app constantly crashes every time it loads a video . Hurry up and fix the bug
Waste of money. Not able to watch games due to my account “apparently” being active elsewhere, I’ve had to change my password 3 times in the last 3 games I’ve watched to justify this, now on the odd chance I am able to watch the game, I’m not able to stream it to my TV for the same reason “account being active elsewhere (on my phone)” Contacted tech support twice now, issue still not resolved Definitely wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.
The latest update is infuriatingly bad. This app functioned perfectly last season. Somewhere along the lines, someone decided to update it for the new season and it’s turned to utter garbage. I’ve just spent five minutes trying to load the scores for today and the screen won’t load. Each new section I try to click on constantly lags, taking so long just to try and navigate the app. It’s rendered the app completely useless. How you can screw something up so badly, when it was already functioning perfectly fine, is beyond me.
Calendar and schedule. Australian here. The calendar dates don’t add up, they display incorrect and as others have stated as soon as you click on a date it starts scrolling backwards, completely unusable.
Time zone handling still broken.. Two versions ago you claimed you fixed time zone handling for locations outside of North America. All you did was remove time zone handling. Removing is not fixing. This update contains “bug fixes”. The bug of time zone handling being completely removed is not fixed.
Worked fine, then didn’t work for months. Worked fine and then it stopped working. Tried calling customer service nhltv they confirmed no issue with the account, and concluded must be the app. Couldn’t find where to get assistance or report issue with app- everything directed back to nhltv. Seems to be working now a few months later. Understand that things sometimes happen, but would be helpful to know whom to contact.
Terrible. Picture quality switches back and forth along with the imagine freezing and the sound keeps going. Really sick of these Scotia Bank commercials I am in Australia and cant physically use their services so to have it pop up EVERYTIME i look at a video is very frustrating. Your app looks for your location for streaming why not with the advertising and every video?? Really.
Time zone issue still not fixed. Time zone for international users still not fixed and quite frustrating. A little slow with live updates but rest of app, after a number of updates, is now very good. Please fix the time zone - last years app had no issues with this.
Terrible Quality. Horrible playback issues. Crashes whenever you do anything when it tries to suggest you watch some live occurrence (last 5 minute, PP etc.) from the main menu. Terrible options/settings with regards to spoilers/scores. It astounds me the quality of an app can be so bad given the amount of money flowing around commercial sports.
App review. Good information through the app, all round great experience just wish some off the sports app in Australia where as good as this one
Cannot view games in AEST Timezone. Hey team, post the most recent update (yesterday) I was able to see the game start times in my Timezone but since the update this has been changed to ET time. It’d be great if you could enable users to select their Timezone as this would negate the seemingly inconsistent auto Timezone selection.
New update is rubbish. This app was GREAT before the update. The ability to play in the car, play-by-play commentary, who was on the ice, layout etc has all been changed/removed. The calendar update is ridiculous, I’m in Australia and it’s all over the joint. Pleeeeease change it back and include those functions back in!!
what is going on. Why change what was working last year and years before, the “new” update is useless for starters it doesn’t have a PP clock run down❌ it doesn’t have a in game Lock Screen ❌ it doesn’t have who is on ice feature like years past ❌ it a big major fail❌❌❌
Missing CarPlay. In past years I could connect to the app to listen to hockey in my car. This feature is missing and would be great to have again. Please bring it back!
It’s OK and unable to lodge tech support. And again, watching the game 5 minutes behind the live stream, it kicks me out to the main menu again! Very frustrating. I thought it was because the game must have actually ended, but it hadn’t, as after getting back to that spot, there is an extra ten minutes of post game commentary. So the game hadn’t ended when I got kicked out. There is a blank drop down in the tech support submission page. I’m assuming because of this it won’t accept my issue. Getting fed up of it suddenly returning to the menu with five minutes left in a game (or less), in either a live or finished game. Only way to get back to that spot is start at beginning and fast forward (if you remember the time) to where it stopped. If you press resume there is a 90% chance it will take you to the end of the game and suddenly a close game is ruined as you know who won.
Radio. I love the app but I want to look at the stats of the game I’m listening to like it was in previous seasons but now that the radio opens a link inside the app I can’t do that. Can you please fix this because I can’t always watch games so like to listen when I’m driving
Great for keeping up with games, but ..... This app is incredibly taxing on the battery, and the “scroll” of screen and functions when the app is active is like using an old computer without enough RAM - sluggish. The phone heats up and can not be held. Fix this issues please, it’s a great, great app, especially for listeners here in Australia.
Awful. Any chance you revert back to last version this is truly awful so many errors every time I look at something else on my phone , scrolled down is painful, you have to click on the game to see who assisted on the goal calendar open to previous day and only have the current week can’t find game Highlights video , should I keep going
Used to be great. I have loved this app for years. I live in Australia and it has been great for years. It is now so unbearable to try and watch games. The video quality is unwatchable most of the time. Finding free streams on reddit is more reliable than paying $150+ to watch on this. Really disappointed.
Unable to turn off Google ads banner in middle of screen. This year the NHL app is atrocious. Unable to watch video recap due to inappropriate google ad banner covering middle to bottom portion of ice. What were you thinking by changing a successful app. Adblockers do not remove this ridiculous banner… NOT HAPPY!
Thanks for helping me, an overseas fan reignite my passion. When I was a kid, I loved hockey. I wanted to play it but never had a chance. We used to play in my driveway on in-line skates but there was never an opportunity to play. Now I can follow my team and listen to every match. With the new deal on ESPN I can watch live and chrome cast and if I miss the game I can watch the recap on here and chrome cast it to the tv. It was so hard for so long to watch and be a part of it but it’s been such a blessing to be able to follow the sport and learn all the names again and this app is the key to everything. I also love I can customise it with the logo of my team. Thanks so much developers and the whole league organisation.
New update?. The new update feels a lot like another addition to the modern adage of fixing a something that wasn’t broken. The new update means each screen you click on is very laggy, and it just takes an annoying amount of time for one to view the scores and stats of each game. I may as well just use google. Furthermore, why must I sign up to have my home team saved as my home team? I already support your app. Always loved the layout of the NHL app and it’s ease of use. Not anymore.
Terrible. App always takes me to yesterdays games and won’t load todays games until I swipe to tomorrows games then swipe back. Unable to swipe more than a few days and news feed is awful. NHL app has been 5 star every season besides this one. Terrible management and update
Buggy Mess. This app is a buggy mess. Looking at the schedule one week in advance causes the app to glitch. The scores are slow to update and the stats are delivered in an unintuitive manner. I recommend deleting this app and using another one to track your favourite team.
Australia. Make it easier to stream from Australia I don’t want to have to pay $60 a month for a foxtel (pay tv) subscription just to watch the hockey.
Time zone adjust fail. Since they've updated the app, the time zones for local area does not work. Example it should show my games on Thursday at 10 AM, but it shows it as all local times with no time zone adjustment. The old app adjusted for time zones to my local area. this whole app is a huge failure and the ESPN plus deal for Australia is a failure. NHL is failing it's fans just like hockey Canada.
Horrible upgrade for radio. Hate the update for 22-23 season. If you want to listen to the radio broadcast of a game it is a longer search and when you do choose the team, the player is so small. It is also the only thing you can do on the app while listening to a game.

New app. Update is horrible
Terrible version. You should revert to the old version. This one lost the calendar feature and it feels more like a news site than a place to check on your favourite teams.
App is brutal. Your app sucks complete meat. Absolute dog water app. You hosers.
Awful Update!!!. just switched over to TheScore and it’s much better :)
Battery drain and phone heats up. Okay honestly, I don't know what you guys did but several people including myself are experiencing very fast battery draining (like literally 5-10 percent drops in under one minute! My phone also feels hot. Fix your garbage app!!!! I don't know how you guys can break the app like this 😡
Update is awful. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I have no idea who thought the app needed updating but the new UI is awful, frustrating, and bordering unusable at this point.
Very bad, very bad!!!. This app sucks. It was bad last year, and they’ve made it, like, multiple times worse this year. It’s barely functional and all the things you want (like oh i dunno, details about goals) have been removed. Best sport, worst league.
Refreshing while reading. The app refreshes when you are in the middle of reading an article. This is an ongoing problem that happens with my iPod, iPad and iPhone. This is the only app that does that.
Convoluted design.. The app is useful in some aspects, but very tricky to use in others. For example what if I want to follow a new team? Why can’t there just be an easy way to do that? Also ads are absolutely annoying, 30s ad for a 10s highlight clip.
Put it back!. This new update is AWFUL! Opening the app no longer goes directly into my chosen team I have to navigate to it each time and if you venture to another tab and then go back to the home page you AGAIN have to navigate to your chosen team page. Also am I blind or can you no longer listen to the radio play by play on the app?? Can’t find it. The organization is ridiculous and after a few days with this update I instantly regret updating the app. Please put it back!
old app much better. this new version of the nhl app is so horrible. please go back to the last version.
New update is trash. I’ve had the app for 5 years and it rarely changed. It was good. You could see your team’s news, the new around the league and videos of goals on the news tab. Then on the scores, it would tell you the network the game was playing on and the top player from each team in goals assists and points. Now it gives minimal information. I thought an update was supposed to improve something not downgrade it. As for when the game has started, you can’t click on a game and see who scored with both assists mentioned too. Now, you have to go on Game Center. One of the best features was when you could press on a player and see his stats from the app. Now, when you press on the goal scorer or assisters you get redirected to the website which also changed for the worst. Next is the standings. The new modern look is not what anyone wanted. The old more rectangular design showed the standings just fine and no one ever complained. The app never needed changing. Maybe one feature could be added but we never needed anything to be removed. I always used NHL app because it showed just hockey from the start when you loaded in unlike Espn or sportsnet, but now where your favourite team isn’t even on the front page when you log in and the schedule for your favourite team and the league is messed up, I think navigating other multi-sport apps would be easier at this point. Horrible update and I hope it gets reverted to the old and better app.
Hate the updated app. The updated app is horrible. The old layout from previous years was simple and perfect. Easy to follow scores, your team and see the stats you cared about. Whoever designed this garbage should be fired. This isn’t just coming from me. I’m in multiple yahoo fantasy NHL leagues and the condenses is from all groups that the revamped NHL app is horrible. Fix this please.
Not working. I can’t see scores. Try again later. Very frustrating
Latest version is garbage. The latest version of this app is awful. It’s embarrassing. Score board doesn’t refresh. The games over you can’t look at the stats. It’s bad.
Can’t turn off Closed Captioning. I am SOOOO FRUSTRATED with this app. I always watch the game recaps for every game each night. I have since the start of the app. But I recently got a new phone and downloaded the NHL app, and I don’t know if this is part of a new update or something but the game recaps automatically have closed captioning on AND it’s incredibly slow and not even right. AND there is no where on the video/screen that lets you turn it off, and nowhere within the app that lets you turn it off. FIX THIS.
New Update. The new update is terrible. I use a different app now to check on scores and stats. Having to go through multiple pages to see who got the assists on a goal is beyond a waste of time. The old version was 1000x better, not sure why they changed it so much.
Drains battery. Recent update seems to cause this app to drain my battery incredibly fast. Like 5-10% per minute fast!
Why? Just why. Why not just stick with the old version? Don’t know where everything is anymore. Just press undo.
Who designed this?. Every time the playoffs roll around, the developers pass off a brand new, seemingly untested app that ruins the start of the playoffs. The issues are systemic. Fire the project manager at this point, because the last three years playoff app rollouts have gone terribly. I end up having to use other apps to get live scores. That absolutely cannot happen. You’re losing ad dollars from people using other applications, plus it seems amateurish for a major sports league. I want to be a fan, stop making it so hard.
Wow. This new update is absolute garbage, it’s all but useless at this point
WHY CHANGE. The app used to work fine and you could actually see important stuff like assists and 3 stars. Now you have to go into the game to see assists. Also it should open to your TEAMS page when you select them not the stupid NHL news screen, I want to see the team I follow first. Before the major overhaul the app was good 4/5 stars. But now it’s just garbage and I don’t even use it anymore, if you want scores fast use theScore it’s way better.
Terrible app.. Hey NHL your new app sucks. Might be the worst app I’ve ever seen. To see a players stats you open a new window…. That makes zero sense. Go back to last years. It wasn’t perfect, but it was miles ahead of this one.
New App is Unusable. This app has taken a huge step back in nearly every category. Your functionality on the app are now severely limited. Nearly everything on this app will redirect you to the NHL.com website or an advertisement website. Unable to view stats (just redirects to NHL.com with error message), Schedule function is horrible and can only view a day previous without going to calendar. Scores won’t show secondary assists without looking at the games individually. Games don’t list backup goalies. The app might look nicer but everything else this app has to offer has regressed from its previous version. If I could give 0 stars, I would.
Cr-App. The NHL needs to stop it with the local blackouts. Tell me why anyone would buy this app when you can never use it to watch your home team? Until then, I’ll save my $179!
Bring the old version back. Since the update its the worst app ever.
Rogers = Worst Support Ever. The app does not link with your account. When the NHL ran this app a few years ago I was up and running in mintes.. I have spent over 6 hours on various tech support lines with Rogers and am still not able to watch any games as the app and website do no recognize my purchase via the Apple store. As it stands right now I have paid over $200 and spent 6 hours on hold and missed opening night of hockey and any exhibition games that might have been available and still do NOT have the ability to watch a game. I suspect this is a Rogers paywall screw up (so they can add commercials and "Canadian Content" of course) and not so much to do with the app developers.. but please be aware it would be better to buy from the NHL direct than pay Rogers... never again.
Ruined the App. I am not sure how basic UX gets casually discarded. The NHL should be embarrassed at their new app. The old app easily showed the latest and relevant videos for my latest team, easy to see stats and standings. Now, it is an absolute embarrassing mess. Doesn’t even filter things by my favorite team. It’s like they rebuilt this whole app listening to someone who doesn’t understand sports let alone hockey. They would have been far better reskinning the old app. Terrible decision by whoever is in charge over there.
Brutal change. Losing assists without multiple clicks is awful.
Price increase is way to high for what you get!. For an app that just streams hockey games $.99 a month was a fair beautiful price I’d even be fine with $5-$10 a month but now they want me to pay $30 that’s ridiculous sorry eh but I wouldn’t recommend this app anymore to anyone just go check out the prices on other streaming apps I will be canceling my subscription as of February 10th still have nothing bad to say of the app quality itself but this price change is ridiculous.
Frustrating updates. Can’t keep my old version on my IPad even if I that can’t install the new update! Keep ask8ng me to update but would not keep working
Awful update. This is the worst update I’ve ever seen on an iOS app. Can’t see assists without clicking into box score. Can’t see the schedule beyond 7 days. When you try to watch a highlight a 15-30 second advertisement starts playing that you can’t stop unless you shut down the app completely. Brutal brutal update. I never leave reviews on the App Store. Please fix your app NHL.
Terrible update. There is absolutely no way this refreshed app had user experience in mind. What was once easy to view and click for scores and player stats is now an absolute pain. I can’t believe how bad this new version is. Someone needs to be fired over this.
Watching live feeds is terrible. NHL gamecenter shouldn’t even be allowed to sell their product for money. I’ve had it for years and nothing has changed. Still a terrible live feed. Blurry, grainy, washed out, stops and starts. Feeds get mixed up and you will get French audio from RDS instead of TSN. Either fix your product or don’t charge money for it. It’s been in beta mode since it’s inception.
Gets worse every off season. I have no clue why they feel the need to ruin this app more and more every offseason. Brutal
Terrible update. Somehow I need to exit and actually force close the app to refresh a score. There’s also some pornographic ads that I’ve been unable to remove. Used to be great, but this is garbage and I’ll be deleting it until the ad thing is repaired.
Terrible update. The recent update is terrible and borderline unusable, the scores page glitches out and cycles through days uncontrollably for me and I cannot look at scores. It also always sets my page to the day previous on the scores page and I have to click on the current day. I also was annoyed that the app always opens on the NHL news and not my teams was annoying, until I found out how to change the setting by myself. Perhaps I missed an instruction but I did not see that information anywhere. The fact that assists don’t show up at a glance when looking at goals on the scores page is also very frustrating.
Scores don’t work. Keeps saying refresh. How can you not sort this out? Dummies
Baffling changes have ruined the UX :(. Used to love this app, now it’s borderline unusable. The updated schedule design and hidden roster menu are the worst offenders imo. Annoying to use.
Quite tasty 😋. I tasted this app and it has a great texture
Unreal. This app is a dumper fire. One day everything works, the next day you can’t even see who assisted a goal. Nothing was wrong with the last version.
Doesn’t even work. The scores tab won’t even load, it just says an error has occurred no matter how many times I restart the app.
This new update is horrible. They recently updated the app and it’s awful game scores don’t refresh so you have to close the app and reopen it every time. For some reason they decided to list the goalscorers from most recent to oldest?! And you can’t see assists right from the scores screen. The app is worse in every way compared to how it was before. Highly recommend using a different app to follow the NHL because this one makes me want to shoot myself everytime I open it.
This most recent layout update is just confusing. Man, trying to find information about my team and their schedule is just painful. I can’t see the schedule beyond one week at a time, I have to go to 3 different tabs to see anything specific about my team, instead of what’s happening around the league in all the other games. The old layout was way simpler. Open the app, see the current game, score, players, highlights and player stats all on the front page. You give us the option of selecting our team for the icon, but the app is more about the going ons in the league than any one specific team. I wish each team had their own app. I’ll change my rating when the app inevitably changes again and the layout becomes much simpler. Until then, I think I'm done with the app and will just go through Sportsnet
App got an “update” that destroyed it. you could click an empty space anywhere on the screen and itll register as you hitting a button thats half way down the screen
New app is worse than ever.. Usability- As a person who likes to look up stats, this update makes it impossible to use. Player pages opens up a separate browser page and that’s if ur lucky enough to find the player since we are no longer to search our favourite players. In terms of the design- The page design makes everything feel super cluttered since 40% of the screen is the header and/or banner. The 60% of useful screen real estate is often dominated by advertisement. That’s not okay.
This content could not be loaded. The title says it all … since 2 months i cant see the scores
Advertising. I understand the need to advertise. The NHL is a business after all. But they now play a 15+ second ad ahead of EVERY 30-45 second highlight clip. One would imagine they’d be quite capable of spacing them out more attractively than that. However, one would assume a lot of things about the NHL and one would be disappointed nearly every time. Unusable trash.
Old version was better. The calendar and game recap are less accessible than before. The old app was perfect!
Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!
Worst of 4 sports league apps. Only has benefit of 1-star review because I can’t give it zero or negative stars. How NHL could take tech of (impressive, efficient, well-built) MLBAM engine and run this app straight into the toilet boggles the mind. Crashes on all my devices and platforms (new and old), all the time. Newest version lacks better features of older version. Deceitful, inconsistent blackout policies addressed in many other reviews mean tons of people are buying this app for no reason. I read some of the better reviews, trying to keep an open mind, that maybe I was the one using app wrong. But I left feeling most positive reviews were vague, like BS ones posted as propaganda for league marketing. By FAR, the worst of the 4 pro sports league apps. Sad that hockey always gets short shrift—there was so much potential here.
Fix this one thing. Love when goal highlights show the play then follow with replays. Hate when goal highlights are short and just show the goal. Some goals happen so quick you can’t even process what you saw in the highlight. Have to rewatch multiple times and wish I could see replays with more camera angles. If it’s just a difference in the person putting together the highlight then tell the lazy dudes to do better or fire them. And kudos to the dudes putting together the goal highlights with goals + replays. Your extra efforts are much appreciated.
Last year’s app was way better. 1. You used to be able to access a schedule that had each teams W/L/OT record on it and scroll smoothly from month to month so you could see the whole season with just scrolling and not tapping to change the page. This doesn’t even have WL records. Pretty lame. 2. The app will pivot into landscape with a couple exceptions. One of the most annoying is recaps and goal highlights. You still get to see those with TV ratios, but your phone is going to have to be upright in portrait mode, making the picture as small as possible and making most of your phone screen black. Someone doesn’t know that viewing in landscape is better.
Not working on my iPad. I’ve been using this app forever and recently, I guess with the update, it does not work at all. I’ve deleted and tried to reinstall several times and the first message I get is that I can’t load the latest version but it can install the compatible older version. It loads but with dated information on the “favorite” team home page and while the scores are up to date there are no game highlights you can see ( not even sure if the listen functionality works). Either way, shortly after looking at the updated scores a window pops up and says I need to install a newer version of the app. I try, and then the loop repeats itself.
Disney killed the radio. ***UPDATE*** THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FIXING THE RADIO FEATURE! This is why hockey is the best sport, hands down. Thank you, Thank you, so much. Whatever change(s) that were made to the radio feature totally messed it up. It took away the quick link icon in the upper right for the first month, and now that it’s back you have to play radio roulette to find the game you want. For instance, I selected the Philly/CBJ game and got injected to Caps/Panthers. So now I’m listening to the Flyers through the Pittsburgh game. Please fix this.
Garbage app for the garage league.. Wow. My favorite hockey app has now turned into a dumpster fire. One thing that DOES work? The new ads. All over the place, so you know that’s what the redesign was all about. MAKE SURE YOU GET THAT AD REVENUE! It’s not enough that the NHL has turned the players into human billboards, slapping ads on the helmets and jerseys. Anything to scrape in another shekel. (I’m surprised they haven’t plastered ads on the player’s backsides and their crotches yet.) My favorite new feature? A constant pop-up claiming to not have a network connection, even though it’s on the network and has zero problem downloading the constant ads. My two choices to acknowledge and remove the pop-up? “OK” or “Try Again”. Both choices do nothing but give you about 10-15 seconds of peace before the pop-up returns, again and again. Amazing work, folks! Quite the quality control you have in the IT Department. NHL: Read the reviews, you zombies. This app was fantastic until the latest update. Roll it back to last year’s version or be prepared to lose 90% of your users.
Blackouts are Horrible. I live in Utah, yea, yea I know, you feel bad for me, point is the closest game to me is an 8 hour drive. How is it any game is blacked out in my market? Especially games on the East coast, I paid for a season pass only to find a third of the games are blacked out. I’m not sure how anyone could give this 5⭐️. I guess if they bought a pass knowing their basement dwelling team would never be blacked out. I give it 2⭐️ because at least I can see some games. Just not the games that mean anything. Pretty sure a game between the Sabres and Stars won’t be blacked out because nobody cares. Very disappointed in the NHL not wanting to market their product to people outside of their own cities. I guess it might be time for a new class action 😏
No Presidents Trophy but a solid 2nd seating. Don’t listen to all the people crying about blackouts and I can’t watch my local team they obviously didn’t read the TOS. I’ve never heard of nor will I ever expect there to be an app to circumvent local broadcasting rights that huge money is paid for so get over it. Now, the app it’s self as far as functionality is pretty decent does it buffer and is the picture quality less than 1080p 60fps during high volume, yes, but for the most part it’s pretty reliable. The developer that handles both the MLB/NHL apps puts out a pretty decent product. Compared to the NBA League Pass app(720p 30fps) NHL TV is a Ferrari
Changed a perfectly functional app for no reason. At first glance, the update is sleek looking. However, it’s completely dysfunctional. The scores tab rarely works. A lot of the pages prompt a external website to load rather than an internal page. That’s stupid. If I wanted to look at the website, I’d look at the website. You can only “favorite” one team and “follow” three more. I like to have notifications for a lot more than four teams. I like to keep up with the competition, or follow teams with several people on my fantasy rosters, or have notifications for every game across the league if I wanted to! But with this unnecessary update, you are very limited. This app is horrendous and I’d suggest your user experience team take notes.
2023 season update bad. The new app interface for 2023 is not great. Can only view current week of game scores. If you try to look at a previous week or day, you have to go into monthly calendar then it only shows the single day of games you select. So to look at another day, reopen the monthly calendar. Very lame. Suggest adding a slider function in the weekly scores so you can avoid opening a single day in the monthly calendar. Over and over to view a day that is outside of the current week Edit: reminds me of the espn+ app now how its set up. Espn+ is a terrible app to use. Be less like the espn+ app and more like the old nhl app. There was nothing wrong with it!
What happened to this app?. Getting ready for new season and just went into the NHL app. It’s completely changed and for the worse. Navigation is confusing, functionality now missing, and the app has fallen into the trap of over using graphics making things harder to read….looks ‘cool’ but much less useful. Example of lost functionality; calendar view of your teams schedule. I’d like to look at a teams schedule, my teams schedule. You use to be able to do that, but not now. And that view also showed you the results after the game was played. Also very quick and useful functionality. I’ll never understand upgrades that remove functionality.
The most garbage app ever. This new app is horrible. I use to be able to listen to Wild Radio but now that is gone. Way too much useless articles and news as soon as you open the app. Just ugly. Also, they took away the calendars. I loved looking at the schedule via calendar. You could even see past games, whether they won or lost, and the score was listed on the bottom. That awesome feature is gone now. The last two seasons I thought it is unbelievable how great this NHL app is because it was perfect. Now whoever created and approved these updates needs to be fired. At least let us be able to unfollow NHL on the app so when we click on “latest” it will only show us our team. I’m sick of seeing Connor Beddard’s face every time I open the app.
Brackets not saving. Every time I make a bracket it doesn’t save. Every single time I close the app I have to sign in to my NHL account again to make a bracket. When my friends try to join my league, looking up its name doesn’t work, but looking up one word in the name does. There’s no option to invite people after you create a league, and the only option in general is via email. The interface is glitchy - the button to save # of game predictions is covered by the web bar at the bottom, the fact that that bar exists in general, sometimes the edit button doesn’t show up, i can’t join a league without also making or submitting a bracket, when i’m editing a bracket and go into # of games in series there’s no way to save it or leave it, and there’s no way to manage all my brackets in one place.
Hockey? Is it a real sport?. Growing up and living in California, hockey was a winter sport you only saw and watched on ABC during the Winter Olympics. It was a sport oddity you could enjoy infrequently, like figure skating. Then Disney brought the sport to Anaheim and Southern California with the Anaheim Ducks. My future wife worked at Disneyland as a Construction Project Manager. (Side note: I got free admission and would avoid rush hour traffic on the 55 Freeway frequently with a stop at the Friendliest Place on Earth). This was my undergraduate education about this amazing TEAM sport.
New version reverting to old. Sad to see the newest season update. They are making good changes but it’s all stuff they took away that fans were upset, so they brought it back. Here’s some more. PLEASE bring back the time of goal to the goal highlights for each game and organize them from oldest to newest rather than newest to oldest. Bring back the calendar view for team schedules. Bring back the ability to EXIT HIGHLIGHT VIDEOS when there is an ad (only way to do it now is to close the app entirely). Bring back the ability to scroll past the current week in the scores tab. New possibilities: Would be nice to be able to rank standings based on each category as well as SEE ALL CATEGORIES in standings that are on the website (notably GF, GA, Last 10, streak). Will be interested to see how this app ends up by the end of the season. They’re moving in the right directions even if it is toward the previous version.
App is virtually unusable and radio is gone again. The latest update to the app has made a fine and functional app almost completely unusable. It’s hard to figure out where things went—it shouldn’t be THAT hard to find the tab for news on the team you follow—and radio broadcasts are gone again. A bunch of the clickable things (stats, etc) are either weirdly out of date or send you to the NHL website—what happened to in-app navigation? The way I see it, the purpose of this app is to let me listen to radio broadcasts, get news and scores about my team, check the schedule, and look at the standings sometimes, and what it hasn’t gotten rid of (radio), it does poorly and inefficiently. Stop trying to axe the radio, my dudes.
Unneeded changes for worse experience. First review ever written. This app was great before the version 14 update. The best official sports app. Before I could have it open directly to the info I wanted to see: my team news and schedule. Now it’s a worse interface designed to look pretty (it doesn’t) and fit in more ads (the real reason for the design). It takes me far more clicks to get to where I want to be while being overloaded with ads. The radio functionality also seems to be removed, which was great on the go. Some stats seem to just open directly to the NHL website which looks terrible in app. Absolutely awful decisions for user experience all-around. Deleting and looking for a replacement app.
Update is horrible.. I used this app for the past 2 seasons and it was amazing! I would open the app and it would take me straight to my favorite team and I could easily navigate to find everything. The update they did before this season, is horrible. It is completely changed. Does NOT take me to my team when I open the app, and when I hit stream game it takes me to the Apple Store to purchase the ESPN app that I already have and the previous version of this app would have taken me straight to the game. No score notifications. I used to get a goal horn for my favorite team…not anymore. Y’all really need to revert back. People really do not like this update. Have you seen the reviews in the last week alone? Just delete and give us back the old one.
Ads, Ads, Ads. Last year I was able to pay to have ads removed from highlight clips. It was great. I got to watch so much content and became an even bigger fan. This year you took that away. Why? Watching highlights of goals is painful. Even watching the same highlight again forcing you to rewatch another ad. Not good if you want to increase the fan base. You make tons of money with tv why do you insist on forcing us to watch an ad before every clip. Horrible. I followed the league less this year because of it. In the bed it means I’ll watch less playoff hockey on tv and that’s where it hurts you more because those ads are your real source of income. Change it for next year please.
The new version of the app this season is unacceptable. Simply put, the new version of the NHL app that was introduced this season is easily the worst professional sports league app on the market. It’s difficult to find what you’re looking for and it’s missing a lot of the functionality from the previous version of the app (which was fantastic!). The player stats portion of the app is horrendous — I shouldn’t have to be led to a separate site (in-app but obviously a webpage) with 1998 style filters that aren’t intuitive or user friendly. Scores don’t even update/refresh automatically in the app. I often have to refresh the page multiple times to get an accurate score. Would give 0 stars if I could. Pure failure of an app for the most loyal fanbase in sports.
Bring back classics. I have had NHLTV for years, used to be Game Center, I love it, I have some issues fast forwarding on Roku4k and it has trouble reloading when I stop fast forwarding, works fine on fire-stick4k and appletv4k. I wished NHLTV kept the classic games that used to be on Game Center and I’m sure it’s easy to put them back on there as some of us like to rewatch old classic game from Adams division like Bruins vs Whalers first round playoffs. So bring that back and I will put 5 stars up. I watch at least 2 games per day and never miss a Bruins game. Not a great product if you live in your teams region, but if you are a transplant and miss your team it’s great.
Oversold, Underdelivered!. I thought it was a good idea to buy the NHLTV app because I’m a fan, and wanted to see the year end playoff push. And, although the app does offer vast amounts of hockey data, all too often the actual games are subject to some ancient black- out rules. Blackout rules that seemed to be rooted in 20th century TV norms and frankly just can’t seem to be explained to ordinary people. I want to be a fan, I’m willing to pay to watch the NHL product, yet they seem to want to limit access their own content? It would appear that in the surface this app offers a well thought out technology platform to be a fan , but it’s the league’s management and their attorneys that are really screwing up the experience.
The new NBA. The NHL network uses mostly Canadian hosts so it’s never fair for the states. They are all star struck. To me all they care about are the rangers and all the Canadian teams. The top 6. What’s going on with players running to Florida? How are they able to pull this off over and over again. Hockey is a team sport and I just don’t understand why they won’t get rid of Gary Bettmen. Hasn’t it been long enough? Time for new blood and change the lottery to live TV. Gary has his hands on the Rangers. No way did the Rangers get 2 first rd first picks, a chance at the playoffs and the bread man all in 2 years. Totally unfair. Tampa bay being $86 million over the cap. All this crap needs to be fixed
Some issues. Overall, the features and ways to see stats are all easy to access, but there are a few problems with the app. for one, when on the team page, the current game being played isn't displayed, and instead, shows the next game. One thing I wish was done better was the future game display. Only being able to see 5 days of the schedule is a little upsetting, as last year you could scroll as far as you wanted. Apart from this, the app is solid, and works much better than many of the other professional sports apps
New Update 👎👎. The app was just fine before the recent update, but there were a few features either changed or removed that were just so unnecessary. First of all, the system for favoriting or following teams is all messed up. I enjoyed the fact that you could follow and favorite an unlimited number of teams and that you could rank them. I don’t know why they had to change it—there was literally no reason to put a limit on your teams now. Second of all, either they removed the radio feature or they made it impossible to find. That radio feature was great for keeping up to date with the teams I enjoyed.
Don’t Fix What Isn’t Broken. The update is not good. It is a scroll-heavy mess. The app used to be great. Easy to navigate, everything right there or a tap away for your favorite team’s news, schedule, standings etc. Yes, you can still set your default team and home page, but half the time I don’t even know where to look to find certain things. The “enchanced UX” is a clear downgrade from the previous. The calendar view of the schedule needs to return, and the standings tab needs to be redone or reverted among a slew of other issues. In all honesty, it seems this update was done to fit more advertisements. I’d rather use google on a mobile browser than the app in its current state.
Why I love Hockey. I have loved hockey and have been an ardent fan since my father took me to my first game many years ago. We lived in New Haven, Conn., back then the home of the New Haven Blades of the now defunct “Eastern Hockey League”. A bit like the movie “Slapshot”. I have worked with adolescents since I was 19. I’m now well over 50 years into the work I have loved from day one; now owning and directing, as President and CEO, a therapeutic Boarding School. Akin to owning and managing a Hockey team in many ways. We have a very high winning percentage. I need to have a winning team. This means my students (and all our Staff) have to get better at the game of Life; develop their skills, learn to work as a team, and along with their teachers, peers, and Directors, build a winning culture. Hockey is Life. It all goes together. Richard L. Chorney President and CEO Grove School Madison, Conn.
Everything is blacked out. There isn’t a single game available to watch in my area and I live in Alaska! There isn’t a local team here so local channels don’t need to worry about their competition. This is most certainly not worth $25 just to check stats and news! I bought it to watch games. I don’t want to watch a game after the game is played, who wants to pay for that? I’m not sure who is giving this 5 stars but they’re high. Trying to watch hockey games in today’s streaming world is extremely difficult. I thought this app would be good for that, it most certainly is not! Save your money
It takes sooooo long to update the standings. Overall a pretty good app but it literally takes days for this app to reflect the actual league standings. It typically takes two days (at a minimum) for this app to reflect your teams actual record which means if your team is playing a back-to-back, it is still out of date. If you want to see where your favorite team actually sits in the standings you are better served by using another app such as Bleacher Report. It is incredibly hard to fathom how the NHL itself can’t do such a simple thing as having it’s own app reflect up to date standings of it’s own teams. Somehow apps like BR can do it, but the NHL can’t. Shane on you NHL, it ruins a otherwise pretty nice app. Until you can fix this baffling issue though, I give you 1 star.
At least they gave us dark mode. Basically, the app is completely useless this year. The only positives I can see are we now have the dark mode option and switching between teams is easier. However, the devs decided to make the schedule only viewable week by week, the final box score is sometimes viewable (otherwise you have to scroll down for the assorted official reports which are not comparable), you can’t swipe right to go back a screen you have to use the back button, the players’ stats pages open in an in-app browser for some reason, you can’t share a goal highlight video, and you can’t even search for one (you have to go to that specific game). Guess I’ll be using ESPN and The Score. Great job NHL
New update is trash. I can’t find players stats easily. I used to be able to click on the name of a player and it would pull up the stats page. I don’t have a homepage for my specific team anymore along with stats of every player. I can’t listen to the broadcast easily anymore. I hate how it redirects me to an online link whenever I can look at players stats. 10 games haven’t been played yet but the app will show the last 10 games instead of their overall record. Relatively minor but I’d rather see the season record than the last 10. A reskin of the old version would have been better imo. I’m currently looking for a new app to use along with using Twitter. If I could give it 0 stars I would. Overall very difficult user experience.
Update ruined app. The app was never great to begin with. Things with teams weren’t updated regularly was the main problem for me. However now the update has made everything far worse! The layout looks nice however navigation is terrible and the fact that now when I enter the app it shows me the nhl page instead of my favorite team is not ok with me! You can go through and cycle it back to your team but you have to do this everytime??? Why not just leave it on whatever you were last looking at? It is also not the easiest to see what day you are looking at when going through schedules for scores fixing that would be nice too.
This app is horrible. You would think the NHL could put together a decent app given the revenue they generate. There are two things in particular that are annoying. First, when you look at the scores tab, you cannot scroll over to check the scores of games from the day prior if it’s the start of a new week. For instance, if it is a Sunday and you want to check scores for the previous day, you cannot simply scroll to the left… You have to click the calendar, which is extremely non-intuitive and tedious. Also when you check the box score of a game you cannot click on a players name to pull up their stats. Just an awful app.
Great if you have a popular team. Bought this app to watch my Carolina hurricanes since I didn’t want to have to buy the fox sports packages come to find out every single game is blacked out. That’s not an exaggeration have not been able to watch a single game. When they say you might experience blackouts they don’t tell you that might means you will definitely experience a blackout every game. I’m sure if you have a more popular team you can catch every game but if you have a less popular team expect every game to be a blackout. Not to mention the cruel updates asking if you want to watch live since you have premium every 5 minutes. Only reason it deserves one star is because it is in fact an app they at-least have that part correct.
Like New Look, but Several Glitches. I really like the new look, however there are a few things that need improved. First of all, the “wild card” standings show the top 3 in central, followed by the 2 wild card spots, the 8 teams currently out and then the top 3 in the pacific. The order is really bad as both divisions should be ahead of the wild card teams. Also, it would have been nice to have the “Live Activities” so you can track the score in your iPhone Home Screen, similar to what MLB did with their app this year. Other than that it’s a pretty decent app.
Very annoying. This app sends you way too many notifications, even more so if you follow individual teams. I sometimes receive more notifications from this app throughout the day than I do texts and phone calls. You can try turning off the notifications you don’t want to receive but good luck if the app actually listens. I have most of mine turned off because of how annoyingly frequent they are sent but I STILL receive them. I had the opposite problem a couple seasons ago where I had all my team notifications turned on but didn’t receive a single one so I would constantly miss game starts or entire games. That problem somehow resolved itself but now I can’t stop the ones I don’t want from coming in.
Why has the standings tab gotten worse?. Look, I love hockey so there is no way I don’t have this app. However, one of the changes in the most recent update seem to take the app back instead of forward; the standings tab. It used to be so clean and concise with all stats viewable when opened. Now I feel like I’m trying to open a webpage that was never formatted for phone settings. There is literally a refresh button in the corner instead of the super clean “pull down to refresh” option of the past. The whole tab seems outdated and not fitting with the rest of the app. Honestly, it’s kinda ugly.
Coach. Get rid of Quinn To whom ever is in charge ask the fans and you’ll have your answer hire Mark Messier as head coach those youngsters would look up to him more than you can possibly imagine these kids when they started playing hockey when they were old enough to watch old past games they watched him at Edmonton they watched him play for the Rangers he knows the game and he’s a no nonsense guy he takes the game seriously he would be an excellent head coach
Worst season of using the app. Is it that the app devs can’t make this work well on the Apple X series of phones? App constantly crashes. If I can get a video to run, soon after, the app goes haywire and either closes itself or I have to force it closed just to reload it. I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled it more than twice and the same issues persist. I’m forced to only use the app on a gen 3 iPad. Seems to work on that with no problems. Problem with that is I don’t tote around an iPad all day.
Notifications Are More Useful Than The App. Once you click on the notification, you're taken down the rabbit hole, and you're on your own from there. The app is extremely linear, so if you don't random videos jumbledtogether or news that doesn't always match the link or banner that you hit, then you're out of gas. No game recaps, no fantasy info, you can't pick a fave team to group all related items around... I just read the alerts on my lock screen and don't bother with the app. And, if those things are there, then it's the same as not being, if you can't easily find them.
New Update Is Garbage. There was nothing wrong with the app UI, but I guess someone thought change for the sake of change is somehow a benefit. It now takes me more clicks to get to my team page and there is no longer a monthly/yearly calendar view of games I can quickly scan to find games. My teams news feed also doesn’t work as it shows a bunch of old stories. To find the “real” news for your team, you must open a story, then scroll to the bottom and then you’ll see your teams news. This is GARBAGE!! Revert to the old app and fire your developers. Seriously stop changing things that aren’t broken. I deleted this crap and downloaded my Teams app which is so much better.
Money Grubbers. Thai app was my favorite app. I was a subscriber for three years. Now you changed the setup so you can only watch game in one Wifi network. That screws up home watching because TV in rec room on one, high speed network for better resolution. Have to use other Wifi upstairs. Now I can’t watch in 2 TVs In my house. My residence. Rip-off!!!! I also used to watch with my daughter when she’s at school. Now I can’t do that. I HOPE YOUR MONEY GRUBBING IS WORTH IT. Why did you change away from old setup where it limited devices vs networks. You’re screwing families. MONEY GRUBBING RIPOFF. I tried to call tech support and I’m quite sure I woke up some guy in Pakistan. He didn’t have a clue. Apparently cutting corners there too.
Current update is awful. I haven’t seen an app get in the way of me trying to find information quickly quite like this update. It’s actually frustrating. Hard to see schedules (more than 4 games, and there isn’t an option to change views). The schedule vertical alignment isn’t good visually. Team Box scores don’t populate the next morning after games. It’s a pain to just get to your teams page, you have to go through the nhl page and minimize. Apps should be easy to get to the information you want. And I’ll go ahead and say that the new bubbles around everything don’t have chic look. It isn’t very visually nice. I don’t like anything that changed with the app
Just Terrible. The app is always lagging and closing unexpectedly. I try it on my iPad, iPhone, and home computer and still get the same results. It’s not the internet because other streaming runs smoothly. The video is not the highest quality either, goes from HD to fuzzy and back at least 20-30 times during a game. As far as the blackouts, there are way too many. Yes, I understand the policy but the amount of Penguins games that I’ve not been able to watch because of the blackout restrictions is ridiculous! I live nowhere near Pittsburgh, which frustrates me when they play my “local” teams (Vegas and Colorado). One would think the NHL Network games would not be blacked out, but they were. Overall, I’m extremely disappointed in this app and package. I will not be purchasing this package again.
App has gotten better. The new version of the app is pretty good. There's a few improvements but there's just as many features from the old version that should have been kept. The NHL does a great job giving its fans a way to track scores and watch highlights on the go from their mobile devices. This app even allows fans to listen to home or road broadcasts of any game they like. I’d say the National Hockey League knows how to take care of its fans & customers.
Radio needs work. I love that you can listen to games free over the radio with this app. But I dislike that it’s either/or….either you listen to the game on the radio, or you get to use the app. Users Need to be able to play radio station and hide the media player while browsing scores, stats, standings, etc. Generally the app seems glitchy and behind on updating scores. Lastly, it would be nice if there weren’t so many ads in front of highlights and video clips. Ads are 30 seconds over and over for a 15 second highlight. How about 30-60 seconds and then you get a string of 3-5 goal highlights without interruption?
Awful Game Recaps and Goal Highlight Video Experience. All game recap and goal highlight videos in “Gamecenter” and the “Latest” tab are unable to be watched “full screen” and you are forced to view a landscape video (16:9 aspect ratio) while your phone is in portrait layout (9:19.5 on my phone). This essentially means the video you can watch fills ~1/3 of your screen which is a SUPER great viewing experience when trying to track a puck that ends up being like 5 pixels x 5 pixels. You can watch videos from the “videos” tab in full screen/landscape, but anything in Gamecenter/Latest (which is where I would imagine a majority of users spend their time in the app) is such an awful experience, I can even be bothered to watch them anymore.
Give me back my NHL App. This new version is so bad! No horn option when team scores. It does not show you who the other goalie is (only shows the main goalie) unless you scroll to the very bottom then click on the game reports then scroll down again to get to game roster to see the full roster. You cannot tap on the players name to get information. The scores only come up half the time when selected. Most of the time it says try again. The original app way way better. Simple, basic and gave you all the information you needed. Was way easier to navigate. Why try and update something that worked perfectly? NHL sold away the rights to ESPN to broadcast so they should have enough money to produce a better product!
Junk. This app has been awful for a long time and it’s just getting worse. All the perks are gone from games, lazy highlights and no condensed versions. App never wants to work. Constantly closes down on itself. I always cast from an old phone through the NHL app to my TV to watch my games, and it’s telling me my account is open in another location (surprise, it isn’t). Won’t play the game on the phone. Close everything out, look on my regular phone. Game plays fine but won’t cast to TV - just get same error message. Can’t load the page to reset the password (which doesn’t need it anyway since I’m the only one using my account?????). Go back to the app and now the “watch” button doesn’t even respond. Turn phone off and on again, repeat, throw across the room. It’s a nightmare. I don’t even know why I bother.
