Magic Stave Midi Recorder App Description & Overview

What is magic stave midi recorder app? Magic Stave listens to you singing or playing an acoustic musical instrument and displays the sound as notes on a music stave and shows the note positions on a piano, guitar, violin, flute or chromatic harmonica.

If you have a MIDI keyboard you can connect this to Magic Stave and it will display MIDI notes played directly. You can connect any MIDI instrument through a suitable interface and cable OR wirelessly using Bluetooth (on IOS 8 or later on a compatible device).

Magic Stave records MIDI tracks either from the microphone or directly from a connected MIDI keyboard.
When recording from the microphone only single notes can be detected (not chords). When recording from a MIDI keyboard full polyphonic performance data is recorded.

Once you have recorded a MIDI track you can either play the track via the built-in MIDI player OR play the MIDI data (send it) to any set of connected MIDI devices (sound modules, GarageBand on Mac etc.) you choose.

Share your MIDI files via Airdrop, DROPBOX, MMS or email. Whenever inspiration comes to you, you can sing/play your ideas as MIDI and share.

Automatically detects the key signature you're singing/playing.

Use the large Cent Meter to improve the accuracy of your singing as you can see exactly how sharp or flat you are.

See for yourself in the YouTube demo - search YouTube for 'magic stave'.

A brilliant tool for seasoned music professionals and beginners alike. Ideal for supporting you as you learn to read music or vocalists away from an instrument and want to know whether you're singing in tune.

Learning to read music and not sure whether the note you're playing is right? Magic Stave shows you the note you're actually playing and you can compare that with the sheet music you're reading to check you've hit the right note. All in the correct key signature.

Are you a singer reading music? Magic Stave will display the notes you're singing so you can ensure you're hitting the right note! Magic Stave can automatically tell you the key you're singing in too!

Ever wondered how high or low you can sing? Magic Stave will show you instantly. Works great with all transposing instruments too.

Magic Stave:
- Converts detected notes via Microphone to MIDI notes.
- See notes on Piano, Guitar, Violin, Flute or Chromatic Harmonica.
- Record MIDI data from Microphone or a connected MIDI Keyboard (via cable or bluetooth).

Useful but unstable. This is a pretty nifty little app which accurately displays notes based on what your phone hears. The only thing bad about this version is that it crashed repeatedly on me. Hopefully, this unstable bug gets fixed soon.

Good App. I really like making my own music but, unfortunately, I don't actually know a whole lot about it. This app is really helpful for me when it comes to figuring out which notes I'm singing, and it even shows me where those notes are played on the piano, which saves me a lot of time and effort. The only thing upon which I believe could be improved is the clarity of how to use everything, because I'm fairly certain I'm not making the most of this app, but purely because I don't quite understand how to go about using it. Maybe it's just me and I'm somehow missing something that would be straightforward for another person, but I'm still confused nonetheless. Overall, it has been a good app for what I'm using it for.

Very cool app. A very cool app that keeps getting better. I use it mainly for vocals, but I could see it being an excellent tuner for guitar as well. I'm sure it'd be even better on a 3G phone, but it works on my older phone, too. Author is very responsive to feedback and suggestions. Keep up the good work!

Perfect for Singers. A great little app for learning to sight-read. You sing a note into the phone. Magic Stave shows you the note it heard in your choice of grand, treble, or bass cleff. Keep practicing until you get it right! It also shows you the note on the piano keyboard or guitar (your choice.) You can also set the key signature. My only suggestion is a small improvement in setting the key signature. You set the key signature by choosing the key name (e.g. D Major). It would be nice to tell you the number of Sharps of Flats (e.g. D Major: ##) for those of us who don't know our keys as well as we should. The author is VERY responsive. I haven't tried the recording function yet.

Note History doesn't work. Tried the free version and liked it but it didn't record a note history, which the full version boasts. So bought the full version for that purpose and i greatly regret it. The note history, for one thing, can't be cleared. But then it only shows the last 7 notes anyway, and it has never once actually shown the correct sequence of notes that i played. It also won't show the same note if it is played twice in a row. It shows a correct note here or there plus a lot of incorrect notes that were never even played. It often seems to be laying notes down randomly, sometimes going to a lower note when it should be going to a higher one. The lack of accuracy is both profound and disgusting. It does do a decent job recognizing notes when the note history is turned off. My recommendation, if the note history is important to you, is to stay with the free app until the developer fixes this one, or perhaps find another. I can't comment on any of the other features.

nice app. This accurate note recognition through a simple interface. As a guitarist, it would be great if the note history could be stored and displayed in tab format within the app, as opposed to exporting the midi file and then manipulating with something like guitar pro.

My Dream App. Ever since I was a youngster learning music, I dreamed of an app that would allow me to hum or sing a melody and immediately show me the notes. That dream has come true with Magic Stave. If you have a modicum of ability to sing on key, you can use this app to figure out any melody you imagine. I have fairly decent relative pitch from many years of playing music, but sometimes I just cannot figure out an interval by ear. Magic Stave to the rescue! If I can sing it on key, Magic Stave can tell me exactly what note I’m singing and I can figure out the interval from there. It can display the note position on various instruments, including guitar, AND show you the actual note name on the stave (A C note will actually appear as the letter “C”). This is fantastic for dummy, self-taught rock guitar players like me who only have very basic music reading ability. As an added bonus, Magic Stave can now immediately PLAY that melody with one of several instruments along with outputting the MIDI file. You don’t have to wait to import the MIDI file to a DAW anymore (although importing the MIDI file is also a FANTASTIC feature). All around an awesome app! I’d buy this app 10 more times if I could. It’s THAT good to me.

Terrible. I got this app to help me write music when I had a melody. This is probably one of the most confusing apps I've ever used, and does a very bad job of finding the correct notes. It also ignores double notes, even if you rest between them. It's one of the worst apps I've ever had to experience using.

One note only. Records notes if you only press one note at a time If you press two, it records a random note Does not record if you press the same note again No timing, everything is a whole not This is completely unfinished

Cool so far. Is there a way I can listen to the midi recording in the app? I don't see a play button? Thanks

Awesome. Could use better accuracy sometimes but about 95% accurate sometimes there's a delay in note display if singing into the phone but it has helped me a lot with pitch and songwriting I highly recommend it.

Magic Stave. New display for Violin very innovative ! This app deserves 5 stars ! Looking forward to Mandolin Fretboard !

Horrible. The notes it plays back and also detects are incorrect. It also sounds terrible. It's a stupid app.

A great way to indicate the notes. This is a great little tool for those who don't yet sight read music, or are looking to fine tune one's accuracy. I play the theremin, and this will be a great tool for my theremin students. I noticed someone mentioning inaccuracy of notes being displayed on repeated attempts at the same note being played. A number of factors can cause inaccurate note values to be displayed. Room accoustics, overtones generated by the body of an instrument (violins, cellos, guitars, ect), and room noise, such as computer cooling fans, insects that make noise (crickets), refrigerators, or airconditioners humming, or even an old flourescent light humming can interfere. It helps to have an accoustically quiet room. Perhaps a microphone adjustment might help filter out some of these issues in another version update. Tobad the ipods, and iphones don't have line inputs. All in all I like this product. Thanks.

I likes.... If you had the feature of saving the notes shown or making them available for print... That would be excellent.

Cool utility for musicians. Great for tuning my guitar or the whole band. Does what it says simply and quickly.

Does what it promises!. Finally able to " write" a song by singing it. It records the notes in midi format which I was able to import into Garage Band then convert to a printable score. I'm a novice so putting notes from my head on paper has been a challenge- but not anymore. This apps also tells me what key I sing in. I had some questions about the app and the developer was very helpful. Happy with my purchase!

waste of time. interesting concept, terrible execution. useless for any real musical endeavor. avoid.

confusing. not sure this app works at all. directions are confusing and i do not believe this works as advertised. wanted it for ukulele since there is not much sheet music available. I cant get it to work at all. I would be happy to retract this if we can get this to work or provide some education.

Can't even play the recorded midi. Can't even play the recorded midi. Have to export to a computer to play.

Brilliant!. Just learning to read music and this is amazing! Love the ability to show the notes as the note names rather than as notes. I’m learning fast. It’s amazingly fast and accurate too, how does it do that? I upgraded from the free version as I wanted to see the note positions on a guitar. Thoroughly recommended!

Awesome!. It's so cool-!

Very Cool music app. This is so cool - to know just what frequncy I'm singing or playing. Esp. in a capella singing. You isolate the one person who might be singing the wrong note (or even just a bit out of tune), and Presto, you've got instant (and deadly accurate) feedback, plus the ability to test the corrected pitch. I have had zero crashing problems. Getting back & forth from the note-and-frequency display was a bit mystifying for a while, until I figured out it was just based on screen orientation. Note that most of the reviews consist of enhancement requests - the sign of a good app that people are figuring out new ways to use. Recommended.

Impressive. It works very well it'd be cool if it had a feature that actually wrote the notes down as opposed to just showing them as you play but still pretty cool :)

Violin, and precision of fingering. Would you provide an option for fingering 'tapes' for violin? It would show whether the note is correct, or between tones. Magic Stave seems to have some trouble detecting notes above high E (in the octave above middle C). I think I saw a notice about improving this, though the same clefs still seem to be shown.

Great App- Please work on making function with iOS9. Great app. I use it to find notes in songs. However, it doesn't function on any of my iOS9 devices. Please fix that!!!!

Pitch recognition.. This cool app hears the note you play and automatically shows you what it is!

Good but maybe a timing snap?…. Because the human voice varies so much more than traditional instruments, maybe it would be possible to have a time constraint limited to 1/16 or 1/32. The user could choose the tempo and a click track count in would help them to stay on track from the beginning. And every note would be constrained to the tempo and the quarter note 8th note or whatever they choose.

The requirement of OS 3.12 is ridiculous. To the developer, build your app with lower version SDK, otherwise I can't review it.

The program fail to find correct note frequently.. The program fail to find correct note frequently.

Disappointing. I just bought this App for my iPad thinking that I could convert some of my midi tracks in Garage Band and Music Studio to sheet music, but this is not the App for that. In fact, I have been unable to find an App that works on iPad that will do that. Anyway, I figured that I could still use this App to capture elusive chords and notes when humming in the mic as it is advertised. However, Magic Stave does a pretty lousy job of capturing all the notes no matter how slow I try to sing or hum a tune. I even tried different mics including USB mic attached to the iPad using the Apple photo adapter but that didn't work (that mic setup works fine with Garage Band). Also, when I attached my midi keyboard I got a lot of electronic "fuzz" with each recorded note on playback and had to make sure I switched to just the midi input to get clear notes. Same with the mic, but the instructions don't tell you that. It would also be good if you could hear a midi instrument when recording, but Magic Stave doesn't convert to audio on the input. That's a real shame for someone used to plugging their midi keyboard in to record on Garage Band and being able to hear what they're recording. One more thing when attaching a midi instrument is that you have to select the right channel. At first I could not get my keyboard to work until I "found" it on channel 8, then for some reason I lost it and eventually found it again on channel 1. I also wanted to send a piano track from Music Studio to Magic Stave because I could see that it was showing Music Studio as a midi interface, but I'm not sure how I would be able to import it in to Magic Stave as there were no instructions in the Help section how to do that. This App is a good idea for someone wanting to capture a song idea while on the go, but I just couldn't get it to work. I think it will need some improvements to make it more usable, but for me it was a wasted 3 bucks and Saturday afternoon screwing with it when I could have had more fun recording a new song. I hope to see an update that will make it more usable.

Excellent for piano or singing. One of my favorite music apps to date, this quickly shows the pitch of the last notes played. Doesn't show chords or note durations, but still pretty unique and enduringly useful.

Great value. Use with slowed music reads note names and length in exported midi score app
