NetHack Game Description & Overview

What is nethack app? One of the deepest, richest gameplay found in any game on any platform, NetHack is a cult classic since its release in 1987, and has since spawned many descendants (including Diablo). gandreas software now presents this classic for the iPhone/iPod Touch:

- Playable in either "ASCII" mode, or graphics mode (just rotate the device to switch)
- Obscure keyboard commands replaced with a simple taps for movement, or a handy command picker.
- Commands can also be activated by a unique gesture based command - want to search for a secret door? Swipe across the top of the play area (all the gestures are shown on the command picker for easy reference)
- Graphics can be zoomed in/out via pinch
- Completely faithful NetHack experience (all the levels, monsters, potions, scrolls, etc...)
- iPhone UI - standard scrolling lists, pickers, etc...
- Multiple tiles sets, from the classic to the sublime
- Never see a keyboard unless you are doing something like typing in a name!

Can you retrieve the Amulet of Yendor and return to the surface?

Hard to use. The controls are hard to use. I think you should play this game on the computer. It's alot easier.

Crashy. I tried playing this four times. Each time it crashed on the first level. Too buggy to be fun.

New version problems?. I just updated to iOS v7.0.6 and, while I'm not sure if it is relevant, I've found attempting to do any command causes the game to crash. It's annoying because I would really relish the chance to play Nethack on the go.

Doesn't even work on iPhone 6. All I get is a small blank window popping up and nothing else. At least it's free...

The NetHack. Since Apple took away iNetHack from the App Store, this is the only NetHack available here. We can definitely benefit from porting this app to iPad and new iOS.

Broken. I live the pc version and was thrilled to see it available for my iPhone! When I downloaded it however, I could not get past the initial black screen with copywrite statement. "Options", "Commands" and "Help" buttons visible at bottom of screen, but they do nothing when touched. Help!!

Update needed. I used to love this game but it fell so behind on updates any update starting with iPhone 5 and later will not run the game. Crashes everytime

Doesn't work on iOS 10. Please fix. Doesn't work on iOS 10. Can't get past first screen after it loads.

Can't get started.. Does not respond past initial screen. Made it to character selection once but the list wouldn't scroll. Isn't playable on my iPhone 5.

Pointless.. The app doesn't even get to the character selection screen. It just sits there in limbo. Not sure if it's just because I have iOS8 but this needs to be updated.

Old school computer rpg. Excellent game. Please make this a universal app (iPad support). Will give 5 stars for the suggested update. Thank you.

Poor controls!. I like the game NetHack, but the controls for the mobile version is hard to use!

Awesome but constantly crashes. Great port for iPhone; once you play for awhile it's not hard to remember the commands (no more difficult than it was remembering them on the PC). Unfortunately my game crashes constantly and does not always restore, or restores an old file. This issue has made the game pretty much unplayable for me so I have to give it a 2 star.

Last update in 2009...?. Now this keeps crashing I'd pay if ur willing to fix it

Please update, as it no longer works.. Im using an iPhone 5C if that helps. I know yall might not even be working on this game at all anymore but please fix it 🙏

Great game. This game is free!, who can argue with free. the idiots that say the game won't save because of a corrupt file didn't save the game manually. If your not smart enough to hit the save button don't play it

Just a few problems.... My games do crash occasionally, but when they do, if I press restore at the startup, it works fine. One crash cause is selecting an un-enhancable (needs training) skill while there is another skill you can enhance available, and pressing done. If the game didn't crash when you died, it would be fine. If that crash is ever fixed, when you select 'no' to restore after crash, it should say an are you sure? Message. The force command isn't in the picker, and options aren't saved between lives (likely because of the crash upon a death). Those would be nice fixes. All in all, it is very convenient and streamlined, once you learn most of the commands by muscle memory. Instead of using them straight from the picker, close it and do the glyph on your screen. You will learn fast. Also, it needs a way to enter wizard mode!!!!!!

Crashes. It crashes constantly

Pretty good. I love nethack, and this ios port is pretty awesome. The only problem is that when I try to move a couple spaces quickly by tapping fast, I run across the whole room. If there was an option to disable that, I would probably rate 4 stars.

One Game-brealing Glitch. This is my favorite version of the game but it doesn't work for iPhone 6! Please update this game I want to play it but I can't anymore 😢

Not the best iOS version. The app store used to have an iPad version of nethack named Nethack HD. It was vastly superior to any other nethack app, including this one. Of course, the better version is now 'not available in the U.S. store.' Typical.

How do I get it to work??. When I open the app it just stays at this black screen with the buttons "option" "commands" "help" but it won't let me press any of them. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I tried deleting it and reinstalling it, I'm still having the same issue.

Doesn't work. Doesn't work with the most updated version of iPhone 6. App Support button on this page is a broken link.

Poor execution. First, I have to say that the control scheme is confusing--not a deal-breaker, if I had a chance to learn it...but this version crashes within a minute of starting, on both my iPhone and my iPad. I might rate it better if these issues were corrected, but for now I can't possibly recommend this game.

Well made. Excellent emulator for the iphone. Please include a drink command for fountains and an eat command for corpses.

Sadly.... Does not work with iOS 8. Same goes with iNetHack, if you were lucky enough to get it. If you happen to have an old iPod Touch, like me, I guess you're OK, but remember this: until another great person decides to port NetHack to iOS 8, no newer devices will be able to play this classic. I can't wait until someone comes and does up NetHack to have 3D visuals and non-confusing amounts of commands/text characters, or even including mods for it such as SLASH'EM, SporkHack, and UnNetHack.

Crashes far too often. I'm sure it's as good as the pc version, but I can't move any more than four times before the game crashes and loses the save file. If you could fix this, it would be wonderful.

Doesn't work with current iOS. In need of an update, does not start for current iOS on iPhone 5.

Close enough for me. The frequent crashing is a major problem. However, if you use the glyphs instead of the menus most of that goes away. Just save often. Considering how dependent the original game was on the keyboard, this is a great port. Two other minor problems: there doesn't seem to be any way to force a chest, and you can't see yourself when you're invisible (yeah, I know, but in the original game at least there's a cursor).

Crashes a lot, but great concept.. Gestures seem a bit iffy too.

Great for local play, learned to love the UI. My first ascension was obtained using this app. Nowadays I prefer playing online on a public server like NAO or hardfought. I wish developer could bolt his UI on top of telnet or SSH somehow. Current telnet nethack on a phone ‘works’ but isn’t playable, IMO. Great job Gandreas!

Classic game, needs to be fixed. I have always loved nethack and I got to play this port when I found it on the iPhone 4. Interface was great and almost everything worked (occasional crashes were an issue - but just like having your mind eaten by a mind flayer so too, I suppose, is the risk of getting randomly crunched under the mighty heel of a software crash). However I have now upgraded to iPhone 6 with latest software (8.0.2 at time of writing) and it won't even launch properly. Please fix this game! I miss it.

Doesn't load for iOS 8. This opens but doesn't actually load. Please fix.

Please help!!. I've heard nothing except good things from my friends about this game. So I said, "Hey, I think I'll give it a shot." Went to the App Store, and, voila, it's free! So one click and a fingerprint later, it's downloaded. I launch the game, and it's a black screen that says iPhone NetHack 2008 (or something along those lines). Nothing happens. Occasionally, I'd get it to a character creation screen, it seems, and then it'd freeze there. What's the issue? Why can't I play? I have an iPhone 6, why is this miniature game crashing on me? Please help me. And thank you.

Can't play for the crashing. I am a big time nethack fan and was really excited to see it for the iPhone! But I get my options set the way I like them, then I try to name my pet and it crashes Every. Single. Time. And it can't ever recover my game after a crash. Very frustrating and disappointing.

Crashes. A lot. I haven't even got to the 2nd level. Even if I choose to reload from the crashed file it starts me back pretty much right to the beginning. It's awesome how it's on iPod/iPhone but it'd be more awesome if it worked -_-

Fantastic Game!. Is what I would say if it didn't crash every 6 seconds. Or had save without quit. Is that too much to ask?

I wish it worked. As a fan of the game since I was a kid, I was excited I could play in my phone. Alas it does not function on iOS 10.1.1. A big white box covers the title page and all toolbar buttons do nothing.

Awesome!. Learning curve is steep. Could use better FAQ. Besides not knowing how to open chests, its fun!

Awesome. Great game. After you memorize the action shortcuts it barely ever crashes.

Great, but…. Crashing constantly on my 4s. Such a shame, too, because I love this game, and this is easily one of the best ports I've played. Fix the crashing issue and this 2 star review turns into a 5-star one!

Crashes. I am happy this exists, but I am currently at about a 50% unrecoverable crash rate.

Plz fix freezing in character customization. I feel like this game has amazing potential but when I get to the character menu it freezes plz fix this this software required iOS 2.2 or later why won't it work on iOS 9

Won't run on iPhone 5. Crashes every time. Won't last for more than a minute. I'm guessing this project is dead?

Fun, but huge flaw. This is great fun and making hand gestures for commands is a very innovative way to make the game flow easier to manage. However, there is a huge flaw with game saving and recovery from game crashes. You could have the most promising character with the greatest inventory and stats, but it's all for nothing if you randomly experience a game crash. There is no way to recover the game from a crash and you have to start again from the beginning.

crashcity. constantly crashes when you exit, very difficult to resume games. Many commands are missing and there is no way to implement them. Nice attempt with the interface and tiles, but overall just not there. Use the other nethack app for stable games.

Would be a perfect IF.... ... If It didn't crash every 5 seconds. Pretty much unplayable due to how frequent it crashes. If this problem was fixed, it would be as good as we could ever ask for as an iPhone port.

Crash == unrecoverable save file. I could only speak highly of this port, we're it not for the fact that it crashes often, and when it does the save file is often lost. I didn't even get to level 2 yet. Stability would be legendary

Probably My Favorite Game but..... I wish it would get updated more , i like playing the original nethack more than anything else , i just love jumping into the game making a quick character then fighting a dungeon finding cool stuff and then dying.

Crashes all the time. Could be great if it were playable

Great game!! Classics revived!. This is really a great dungeon slasher. With a groovy graphics tile set, which u can change, and the immersive gaming that came from the original. With clever iPhone commands integrated, I can't reccomend this game highly enough. True it has a few little issues to iron out but otherwise this game is highly playable and very addictive! Well worth the download.

Doesn't work iOS 8 iPhone 6. Unfortunately doesn't work anymore on iOS 8 on the iPhone 6. Would be great if it were playable, and had a ui overhaul.

Crash. You move twice and pick up a box. Crash. Cannot recover file. You make new character and move to that kobold. Crash. Cannot recover file. You make new character and move to that.. Crash. Cannot recover file.

Get iiit!. Honestly my favourite game on the App Store - and I have played a fair few. There are, however, some crashing issues, and I have had some problems with random loss of saves. This really needs an update. Still, it's free, so there's no reason not to get it. Many do not like Rogue-likes, but I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Double tap frustrations. The double tap for quick move is way too sensitive. Is there a way to turn it down or turn it off? Other than that it's pretty good, way better than the other port.

Doesn't work on iOS 8. The game doesn't get any further than the copyright message.

Broken. Broken and unmaintained

Please update nethack. You created the best app version of this game. Please update it or redevelop a new app for sale.

Good free port of nethack. This is a good game. It even has the legacy ASCII graphics. I don't know if I would get it if it was paid, but as a free app, awesome! There are bugs here though. It needs not think that it crashed when you open the app. Also, when you die, the app crashes instead of starting a new game.

Fail. Constant crashing. Don't even bother. Deleted straight away. Waste of 6mb

Poor. Game crashes every time Not much fun there 😡

Crashes on menu. It looks awesome but crashes on all menu options from the rolladex menu. Even inventory . iOS 5 Update would be cool

Orphaned App. App does not work in very basic ways. Appears to be abandoned by developer. Support link broken.

Broken 😒. Not working at all since iOS 7...

App completely broken. Downloaded and loaded the App up but it seems to be completely non-functional. It is just stuck forever on the initial screen.

Great game now abandoned. Was great when it first came out. But has since been abandoned. INetHack2 has taken up the reign of this. The developer uses a new version of NetHack. Check it out.

Great port except for infuriating bugs. When the game is playing, it's a sweet port of the original. But the game crashes if someone calls during play (and can't seem to recover afterward), and the save game function is unreliable at best.

Want to love it. -crashes i cant save -awkward controls Update!!

Great!!. This is a great game, just fix the crashing and it will be perfect!

Not Bad, But Needs an Update.. This is really quite a promising rendition of a classic (much better in its execution than iNetHack is)... until it freezes and obliterates my save. Luckily, that means little in a permadeath game, but it's still VERY annoying nonetheless. Buy it, along with iNetHack (both free), and see which one you prefer.

Completely broken. The app opened for me and shows a popup, but the popup says nothing and has no "ok" button. I can't do anything because the popup is covering the screen. I understand that the app is super old and will probably never be fixed. But for those of you wondering: no, it doesn't work.

Disappointing. Game play is excellent, but every time I try to save and quit, the game crashes instead of saving & can't recover when reloaded. I can't devote hours to playing until I finish or die, I need a game I can save easily and often. The crashes mid game are bad enough, & far too common, but the ones when I try to save make this pointless unless all you want to do is replay the first couple levels endlessly

No longer updated. This game is no longer updated for current IOS versions, so you probably shouldn't download it.

Spectacular port. Absolutely brilliant port of the classic game. I thought Nethack would be impossible on iPhone but this achieves it admirably. The use of gestural controls is a drop dead genius solution to the games extensive control scheme. And the option to use various graphical tilesets is icing on the cake. Very well done.

Crash Prone. I really wanted to like this app, but it's very crash prone and the motions to do things seem needlessly awkward.

Fix the bugs. This port is much better than the other, but I have been having many problems. 90% of the time it doesn't save, and 95% the time I don't get the alignment, class, race, gender etc. that I had entered into the screen. And no, I am not pressing random. This was a great game on the PC but horrible here. And in the beginning when I said it is much better than the other? That one is even more horrible. Not that yours is good, but the other one is worse.

Missing this game. I use to know this game as rogue. Loved it’s simplicity and had fun playing it. Wish you guys would update it.

Broken. This app no longer works

Great port. I love the inclusion of both ascii and the 2d side scroller versions as well as all the different tilesets that really improve the game. I like how the commands are all on a slide wheel and categorized so you dont have to try and remember what character key does what. great game, even better on the pc though.

Great - but crashes under iOS 6.x. Would love to play this rpg classic if I could, but crashes after 5 minutes or less... not clear if the problem is iOS 6's known memory leaks or the app though. Looks great while its working. Any bugfix updates would be great.

Seems very cool. Especially with the shortcut strikes for actions, but the game crashes every time I try to do an action. Most unfortunate.

excellent use of the touch interface. This app has a learning curve with the gesture interface, but once you learn the gestures, you can quickly move through the dungeon and perform complex tasks. In fact, the gesture interface is MUCH faster than the menu picker. I just use the menu picker to learn/look up the gestures for a specific action. There seems to be a lot of low ratings, with few low reviews. My assuption is they are not getting over the learning curve.

Awesome!. An extremely faithful port that does a wonderful job of using the iPhone user interface. Nethack's multiple keyboard commands are all there and easy to access, organized using logical groupings and shapes. I was skeptical of the gesture system at first. I tried memorizing and got frustrated. I tried using the command picker and got frustrated. So I started using the command picker to look up a gesture; backing out of the command picker; and using the gesture. Sooner than I would have expected I had the common gestures memorized and could traverse the dungeon quickly. Now they are second nature.

Great, but can not save (v1.0). Nethack is probably responsible for dropping my college GPA a fill point, so getting an iPhone port is outstanding. My kudos for the outside-the-box thinking that inspired the gesture interface, it really makes this a truly iPhone experience. My problem is that whenever I save-quit, when restarting I get a dialog that says, "It appears Nethack crashed last time - try to recover game?" I've tried to recover 6 times, never successfully. So it seems I can't save the game. Ah, well.

Very good but one Q. Very good but has anyone reached 12 ascencion

The gesture controls ar ideal for Nethack!. This really is an excellent release of Nethack and I don't understand all the negative reviews. iNethack has such an ugly and needlessly cluttered UI. The gesture based system is much more user friendly and elegant than iNethack's cumbersome and clunky customizable buttons. I am very fond of this gesture based system, every command you need is a few simple slides away, and many of them are quite intuitive. And honestly, if you think there are to many gestures to easily learn and memorize (like iNethack's interface is SO much better) than perhaps you aren't the type of person who should be playing a game like Nethack! I do have a few minor issues though. Please add the #force command! I don't always want to kick locked chests open! And an option to completely disable running on a double press would be appreciated. I always set mine to crawl but I would prefer if I never ran at all. I'm alway running on accident when I am simply trying to move quickly and precisely. And FYI, if you have your doubleclick home setting set to "iPod" and you double click twice ingame, the game will crash and require a sync to play again. So remember to hit that close button after you are done fiddling with your music!

best nethack port. As i said in the title, the game is the best nethack port. The gesture controls are very user-friendly,although it takes time to master them. But there s a command button in which all the commands are divided like move or Inv commands. Howewer, this game still lacks in-game wiki help, make this and the game will be just awesome. There also some lags on iphone 1 generation.

Crashes Constantly. This app crashes and loses your game progress constantly. UNUSABLE.

Great port of the game. As a fan of roguelikes, I am very happy with this port. The gesture system is great if on a learning curve. Nice to see integration of the interface into a classic game. I did see the initial error, but since then, no crashes. The only problem I've spotted so far is the "more..." function sometimes flashes by too quickly to read. Not bad at all! Nice job.

Unplayable on iOS 8. Can't play on my iPhone 4s running iOS 8. Please update!

0 STARS FREEZES ON 8.4.1. Does not run at all on 8.4.1

Hmm. Good port to the iPhone if you liked this game. However, this game is so old and out dated, it makes zelda look cutting edge. The controls do however make it hard to move around. If someone could port Diablo 1, THAT would be awesome!!!

Great with a caveat. A great nethack port with a great interface, but the spell menu takes a very long time to load. Great on the whole. Get it, it's free!

Great game. I've only been using this app for a few minutes, but I have a couple of first impression tips. First, it would be nice if rotating the device kept the graphics as they are and the ASCII UI was moved to where the other tilesets are. I doubt that people are going to be switching between ASCII and graphics on the fly much, and this way you can play with a tileset on lndscape mode. Also, o had some trouble accessing the inventory. The command menu says to touch the center of the screen, buy doing so highlights my character and nothing else. Other than those, this seems like a good port so far. Keep it up!

Needs update. So update

Does not work on iOS 9. Do not buy!

Won't run in iOS 8 on iPhone 6. Subject says it all

Gestures to difficult. Way too many gestures to learn. Frustrated me after 2 minutes.

fantastic- nearly no complaints here. As a gamer who is unfortunately fairly new to NetHack, it has taken until now to discover this app, but I'm thrilled to have found it! This is an amazing translation of the classic NetHack to a touchscreen interface. There are all the options that I was hoping to find, as well as a handful of tile sets to choose from (I opted for on that looked close to the original text (the original text map is viewable in landscape as you can see from the screenshot.) I hope that this app will be updated in the future in an attempt to continue to improve the mobile version of this amazing game, and here is what I hope to see in the future: —[Improved Performance] Movement is slow, and I realize that there are a lot of gestures and there needs to be sufficient time for their input to minimize accidental commands.... movement is very slow. I think this would be most efficiently fixed by a button on the bar that would reveal/hide a virtual D-Pad for movement. —[Scaleable Text Map] I prefer the classic Terminal style display, and while the tile sets can be zoomed in and out, the classic text map does not zoom. Please allow players to zoom in on that map, as it is much too small to clearly see or play with. —[Black/White Invert Option] I'd like to be able to make it black text on a white background if I want. —[Recent Commands Tab] I think it would be very helpful if the commands list had a tab that showed the last 10 (non-repeating) commands used. I hope these suggestions are appreciated and applied; I love this game, please keep working to make it even better! :)

Terrible 😑. It doesn't even start up when I try to play. I'm on iPod touch

Not working iPhone5/ios8.. Don't bother.

nice port of a great game. nethack doesn't grab you with graphics or sound or fancy features. It simply provides a depth of play that is unequaled. There is hardly anything you can try that hasn't been anticipated and handled, and always in a way that keeps the game balanced. I'm still getting used to the gesture system, but I think I will probably use it for the most common commands, using the menu for everything else. Even with just the menus it is certainly playable.

Fails to launch on my iPhone 6. Sad face. Needs fixing.

Best Internet downloaded game of 1995. And still is 1! Five stars all the way!

Needs a printable command reference!. So far, so good. The old NetHack game I had is no longer even available on the iTunes App Store, but this one is much better so far anyway. It has no keyboard, which is great - but 100 gestural commands instead. I desperately need a printable PDF of all the commands. Maybe two versions, one for standard paper (Letter, or A4), and maybe a pocket reference that can be folded up to wallet size.

Nice, but missing commands. I like this port, especially in landscape mode. I would like it better if it had the full commandset, (the # commands, like dig and force), and a way to specify down as a direction. How do you dig up a grave using the provided commands?

Doesnt work with IOS 8. Great app, but it no longer works.

My favorite app - seriously. After a couple years since my last nethack obsession, I decided to search the store for it. I downloaded the two versions I found - this and inethack. Initially I was more impressed with inethack - mostly because, as another reviewer said, '[this nethack]has too many gestures to learn'. Something though felt clunky to me with the inethack version and was about to give up altogether when I decided to give this version another try. And embrace the gestures. If you take your time to learn the gestures in conjunction with the menu system, you'll love this game. I now use gestures for about 75% of my game play. The menus are fine for the rest (or when I can't 'get' a gesture (like 'Eat Food' sometimes)). All in all, a faithful implementation of this classic game with support for tilesets. Since I downloaded this a couple months ago, I have easily increased the use of my iphone 100-fold. I'm not kidding. Previously (after the initial 'wow, there's all these cool apps here') my phone was almost exclusively phone and music. Now, I play at least 2 or 3 sessions a day of nethack. As for the game itself, if you don't know it, you're in for a treat. Arguably my most favorite game of all time. And that's a tall order considering all the phenomenal games to have come out and literally break new ground in the 20+ years since nethack originally came out. But this game has one thing that (imo) almost all other games lack and that is replayability through the randomness and variablity of the game. Diablo was close, but you only had what? 3? 5? race/class options? No, this game is a true dungeon crawl where each new game is truly new. Items, objects, creatures, rooms, maps, are all random. But there is still an objective (acquire the Amulet of Yendor - good luck with that) and it's still the same game. I've played it for hours on end on my iphone. The gesturing system rocks when you learn it. Overall, 100% A+++ Issues? Since it's nethack, I'd like the source released for this version (the author says he intends to on his site). I would also like more custom options. Allow me to upload a tileset for the game to use. Persist my option changes (it's annoying to have to select 'show time' each game). Have a clock on the screen. Allow me to write my own gestures (i.e. map 'keys' myself). Allow landscape tilesets. Bravo to the author. Thanks for bringing my favorite game of all time to the iphone in such an excellent representation.

Very faithful to the soruce material. EXTREMELY faithful recreation of NetHack, I love it!

Yay. I am so happy they even have this game!

Great. Awesome game, it keeps me occupied throughout the day. Even though I've never played the original port, I still think that the developers' choice to put it on the iPod was a wise one. I'd rank this game on my list as at least no. 2

Brilliant port. I am a big fan of NetHack and I even had it for the Amiga back in the day. I downloaded both available ports at the same time. Since both were free I applaud the efforts of both developers. However, I give Glenn Andreas the nod for the better port and, while I believe it should have a better rating than the Zimmerman port, I'm not too suprised that it doesn't. Permit me to explain and perhaps you will agree. Regarding the Zimmerman port * The interface is inflexible. The original game worked with colored ASCII text. The Zimmerman port uses a half-text/half-graphic solution that is foreign to new players and experienced nethack players alike. * Input adheres rigidly to the original keyboard interface. On the one hand, I think this is good because of the familiarity factor. OTOH, let's get real: the iPhone/iPod is fundamentally keyboard antogonistic. This isn't bad, but it's a thing that must be recognized to port NetHack which is keyboard-philic. Why does NetHack use the comma for picking up objects? Because it does. It's convenient. It's not so convenient on the iP***. In all, a proper NetHack port needs to circumvent the keyboard in a convenient way. Regarding the Andreas Port * The interface absorbs all generally accepted graphical interfaces. The original ASCII is choice 1. The creaking old graphical replacements I had for my Amiga is there plus 4-5 others as I recall. Turn your iP** horizontally and you're at the full map as players have known and loved it for ages (plus one good graphical alternative). * The inputs are one of two: 1) apple style multiple selections and 2) finger strokes. As far as #1 is concerned, it's as awkward to use the Zimmerman menu hierarchy as the Andreas scrollable lists. One is as bad as the other. But the "fast" interface award goes to Andreas. Let's talk about this. Consider searching. On my PC I hit the S key. Under Zimmerman -- given that I know I need to press S -- I pull up the keyboard and lose half my view of the dungeon. With Andreas, I admit that it's not intuitive to swipe my finger accross the whole top 1/3 of the display to do a search. However, it's fast. And it's no worse than my old learning curve for NetHack to use comma for pickup, colon for "look" and -- yes, I did NetHack on systems lacking numeric keypads -- using J for left, ; for right, k for up and L for down. Mis-guided NetHack purist-wannabees have under-rated this particular port. If you're already a NH fan, get both versions, but I think you'll find I'm dead-on with this review. If you're totally clueless what this is all about, get NetHack, caffeinate your brain and make the most of your humor, brains and idle moments (Nethack pauses more easily than 90 of the games out there) and enjoy. Finally, some negatives. These aren't big negatives. Call them an encouragement to the developer to do a little tweaking. 1) I am told at start that it is recovering from a crash. This is awkward. We don't want to scare off the noobs. 2) I wish the settings would remember my preferences for auto-pickup. It's lost between characters. For the PC version it's a text file, so I appreciate the challenge on the iP*** to preserve this. You might give it some thought. 3) Character creation is a bit bizarre. I think the Zimmerman model is superior for intuitive startup. I think just a little extra help might clarify things.

Fantastic port of a classic!. First, thank you for taking the time to port and release this game - and for free no less. I was skeptical of how a gesture-based input system would work for this traditionally keyboard-based game. However, I'm a convert and I find it easy and intuitive to use. Thanks again!

Woah. This is by far the best NetHack port I have played. the controls were solid and the chang between textmode and tiles by rotating is fun. I was surprised this even ha the ability to have custom tiles! This is literally the best app I have.

Mostly awesome. Good port of a great game. A few commands seem a little hard to get to respond. Also I keep getting an error when I first load it that says it didn't shutdown properly before. It started with the first time I played. A little odd, but should be looked at.

Eminently playable. It isn't as elegant as rogue touch, but on the other hand, nethack is a vastly more complicated game. This is an admirable effort. I am very attractive.

Crashes on launch. Every time the game is started (including the very first time), it displays a message "it appears nethack crashed last time. Attempt to recover?" The recovery fails, so there's essentially no way to save and return to a game. Too bad, seems fun otherwise.

2014. Fix the app! iPhone 5 bugging out.

Doesn't work on IOS 8. Downloaded, doesn't run.

Classic!. Ty dev

The best iPhone nethack port. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have classic keyboard control and no iPhone menus (for inventory, creating a character, etc.) or at least a 'crazy old coot' mode or something that would switch to the classic setup.

It's ok. Inethack has a better interface. Check out that version.

Horrible. I hate this game! The iNetHack version is better. The gestures in this game make it horrible. Only play iNetHack and the computer version if the REAL version.

Please Update!!!. Such a great game, it's a shame nobody can play it on iOS 8...

Does not work on iOS8. Start screen is visible, but then you’re stuck

Won't load. Please update !!!

Great but needs fix. Desperately needs a fix for invisibility; the @ disappears and you have to mentally keep track of location which is not good when returning to saved games.

Does not run. I am sad to miss out on what sounds like a good port of Nethack. It does not run on my iPhone 4. It just sits there at the copyright screen. Sigh.

Lame. Crashes too often to be playable.

Best iPhone port. Take the time to learn the gesture commands, and it's great. I would love to see a slash em mode however. Other than that, it's perfect.
