Rogue Game Description & Overview

What is rogue app? A favorite on college Unix systems in the early to mid-1980s, Rogue popularized the dungeon crawling computer game dating back from 1980 (and spawned entire class of derivatives known collectively as "roguelikes"). gandreas software now presents the classic for all your iOS devices (10.0 or newer required):

- Playable in either "ASCII" mode, simple graphic characters or fully graphic tile mode
- Designed for simple "menu" based commands, or can be driven entirely via a BlueTooth keyboard for full retro mode.
- Graphics can be zoomed in/out via pinch
- Completely faithful Rogue experience (all the levels, monsters, potions, scrolls, etc...)

Explore the Dungeons of Doom and retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, or die trying!

One of the few free app store games you can keep playing and playing.. Obviously this game isn't for everyone. If you haven't played any rogue-like games you might not be able to handle it. But if you can use your imagination and like the sort of game where experience pays off and crazy things can happen, give it a shot. Some tips: There are lots of hidden doors – if a hallway comes to an end, use the search for traps command a bunch of times. To shoot arrows, equip the bow and throw an arrow – it is often worth the bother, but don't forget to go back to a mace or sword for hand-to-hand combat. Choose your battles and learn which monsters can kill you at various stages of the game.

Yay Rogue! But sigh.... So happy to have my beloved Rogue in my pocket! But sad because this implementation is buggy and has major usability problems. It’s subject to random crashes, clearly a bug, and it has weirdness about player names and saved games which also seems like a bug but could be a design problem. As for usability, there seems to be no rhyme or reason about which features are on which supplemental menu. And one constant minor annoyance: why must a double-tap in a tunnel stop at every corner, instead of running to the next fork or doorway as in some other implementations? With no keyboard, saving those unnecessary taps would make a big improvement in playability...

Great game with niggles. I Play this game compulsively, put in 50 hours plus. Graeat reminder of cllege and Mines of Moria Gesture's for character actions is a great innovation. Couple drawbacks preventing a five star rating. Issues with the throw function, after selecting throw and direction about 30% of the time the next screen is the food screen rather than the weapons page From a game play point of view, finding food over rides everything. Starting with just one food ration means food is the most important need. I've had three or four promising characters die from starvation because the app decided to not provide food. As a solution you should start with more food or start out at a city so you have the option to purchase provisions.

Great game!. It's a great game - really classic, with Okami-style controls to make it better! It's completely bug-free except for one time, when I did the gesture for "throw" it brought up the throw menu, then when I chose something to throw it brought up the eat menu instead of throwing. When I used the command picker it worked fine though. Other than that, it's great.

Great iPhone rendition of the classic. This is a great rendition of the classic Rogue. This is for addicts of Roguelike games. If you don't know what that means, pass on this. Don't expect it to be what it's not. I didn't just download this, I've been playing over and over again... and most of the "bugs" people are complaining about are the way the original game is supposed to work, or are easy to work around. I ran into the throw bug but now that I just swipe from edge to edge to throw, it works every time. And people who say it's hard to move or can't find an exit to a room... you don't know how the original works. Please do Nethack next! I actually prefer this to Rogue Touch (which I paid for) in many ways, and I play this more while Rogue Touch sits unused.

classic dungeon crawl fun!. Evolutionally speaking, Rogue is that fish with leg-like appendages that first walked upon land - a direct ancestor of Diablo and World of Warcraft. The graphics mode is a nice touch to keep it fresh for modern audiences, though I prefer ASCII mode. While there is definitely room for improvement and simplification of the game, I'm sure gandreas software did everything it could within licensing limitations - this is a port, after all. Rogue's difficulty reflects a realism that most of today's games lack. When you die, you're dead - start over from scratch. Everything is working against you. Only a combination of your wits, good planning, and extraordinary luck will see you through to a winning game. I've never won, and I'm not sure I ever will. But God help me, I can't get enough of it.

It’s about 60% there. If you’re looking for an exact replica of Rogue dating back from the 1980s, this isn’t it—it still needs a lot of work to make it the game we all love.

Flashback!. Wow! This takes me back a few years. I was absolutely thrilled to see Rogue offered. Interface is marvelous. Tilted sideways, map view looks just like I remember. Tilted upright, the new look is great. Commands from drop-down menu are easy enough, though a little clunky-feeling.. no moreso though than the original type-commands. I would have given it five stars just for pure nostalgia, except that on death it kicks me all the way back out to iphone apps screen, and I must restart Rogue all over again to continue playing. Thank you for a delightful application.

Needs work. Well done port, although this should probably be listed as beta: Throwing items works only occasionally, which is a big deal when you're trying to keep your distance from certain creatures. The biggest problem - I just had it crash on me, and when I restarted, it was back to level 1! Save file gone? I dunno, but I had some great items, hit points, and strength. :(

Excellent idea, but could use improvement. 1. As others have mentioned, there is a throwing bug where it throws something other than the intended item. 2. The response to transition between portrait and landscape view when the screen is rotated is slow and sometimes doesn't respond at all. 3. Pitch zoom is fine for photos, but terrible for games. Would suggesting using a two finger/three finger tap gesture for zoom in/out. 4. Does each character icon have different stats/characteristics/item specific luck? It seems that the only change is the icon. 5. The embbedded faq mentions the importance of saving the game, but I didn't figure out how to do this. Seldom if I close the app I can pick up where I left off, more often it starts a new game. 6. Difficulty selection would be nice. 7. Please consider a port of Larn or uLarn. It's more diverse than Rogue and much more entertaining.

Appreciate the effort.... Can't complain about a free, solid port like this, but I do wish the app wouldn't bomb to the home screen whenever a push notification or text comes in. More importantly, app stopped running after about 2 weeks -- won't load when I was in the middle of my best quest yet. :( Wish for more items to be found -- esp. scrolls of identify -- as in Epyx software version I played as a kid.

Can you fix the bugs plz?. I was excited. The first time I played this app, I had lots of hit points and found a 2 handed sword. Then at 4th level it froze. When it unfroze it kicked me off the app. Went back and my character was at 1st level at the beginning. Had to start all over. I would gladly pay more to have a solid version that actually works. Please fix now!

It's Rogue!. It's Rogue for the touch/iPhone! I may never come out of the dungeon again! :D And what a wonderful (and really clever) implementation it is. Gandreas Software, I'm keeping my eye on you. Your M.O.T.E.S app is the app I play with most and now you've given us the classic dungeon crawl--I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next. I'm super impressed.

Very Well Done. When my friend said "I found this cool game called Rogue" I thought it was too good to be true. I used to play this game all the time. To be able to play it anywhere is great! The controls are well done although it can be kind of annoying to walk to the mid section of a room since the run feature makes you keep going. Small issue outweighed entirely by how great this game is. It would be really cool if they ported NetHack because the class system really makes things interesting. Well done!

no keyboard support. no keyboard support this is garbage

Good adaptation, pity about the small things. Remarkably true to the version I played 25 years ago. The touchscreen shortcuts are excellent. My only complaint is that this version, like many variants, has become too difficult. One example was a teleport trap at the entrance to the room with the next door down. In the original version you just had to allow the trap to eventually teleport you into the same room- this version would not do so, ending the game. I also had a case where there were there were no secret doors- hundreds of attempts would not reveal one yet there had to be one to continue. It's frustrating to invest hours in a run that ends stupidly. Close to being a real gem.

Wands crash app. Liked rogue and want to like this but every time I select a wand to use app crashes and must restart!

I just don't get it... Yes, I'm too young for this to be nostalgic or even familiar, so I personally find if underwhelming. The controls are especially strange, and I don't think I'll play this again when there are similar games with better visuals out there. I got this to try out the gesture based commands, but they never worked for me.

Perfect little 'casual' dungeon crawl game.. There is a reason why Rogue is a classic, and I'm still able to enjoy myself 23 years after I first saw it. I was even playing this on my PC less than ten years ago while waiting for a download to complete. Sure there are more advanced clones of this (Nethack, Larn, Moria, etc..), but Rogue excelled with the simplisticness. I was hesitant over the touch interface, but actually I warmed up to it after a few games. (In fairness, the somewhat obscure keyboard method wasn't much better on PC's, but it was all we had.) I'm embarrassed to say that my largest complaint was simply that it may not be a great fit for the itouch. The screen is just a little too small to play without eye strain, and a zoom feature would make this much more comfortable to play, even though when I've had it on other versions (like for the Atari ST), I always needed to keep zooming out in order to see the whole map in order to figure out which direction to go in next. However, I say 'was going to be a complaint' because I played it several times without realizing that if I rotated the screen, the game automatically zoomed into a well drawn and playable closeup. Very nice. It may feel a little old school to some, but it is definitely well worth the playtime.

Glitchy AF. You will be playing and all of the sudden the game will exit. Your character is not saved when you come back. You have to start over. By the looks of it, there was just the one version and update released two years ago. Doesn’t like like there will be support into the future.

Shows promise, but clunky interface. I loved the old rogue, so I had high hopes. But the swipe interface is too difficult to use, it kept misreading my inputs, it just got frustersting. Its missing a help page, had to learn interface from the website faq. The graphical interface is very nice, the all text version is too small font to be easily to view. I'd much prefer a series of action buttons, but if you can learn the swipe system it looks like a fun RPG. P.S. Am frustrated I can't find the author's email address on his site.

Played too many hours in the 1980s. I was delighted to find a version of Rogue for the iPad, but after playing it several times, I must admit, I am disappointed. There are several disappointing flaws: 1) Can't throw potions - I used to throw potions of confusion at monsters to get an advantage. In the original, you could throw anything: food, armor, whatever. 2) "Run" is not implemented correctly - in the original, when you ran, you advanced to the point of a decision. For instance, if you ran along a wall containing a door, the character would stop at the door. This version blows right past the door. 3) Some monsters should not kill you - Ice monsters, Aquators, and Leprechauns (for instance) did their own version of damage, which is made these monsters interesting. But they didn't kill you. 4) Does leather armor exist in this port? I have yet to find some. It was the only armor safe from an Aquator. Having said that, the graphics are a nice touch. I don't remember a potion of hallucination or a scroll of floating, but whatever. But the items I mentioned are nuances of the game that made it timeless.

Please improve the guide/controls. Seriously. I have no idea how to move down. I’ll find a new game with better instructions.

Love this port. Play it more than anything else!. I'm an old school rogue fan and I've played this port on and off for a few years now. Accept the learning curve for the touch controls and it feels great once you get the hang of it! Yes, it occasionally loses your game, but in the world of Rogue you were probably about to die anyway. Stop crying and try again. Plus it's FREE. Pwnage.

Great!. I've been playing for days and haven't seen any of the reported throwing bugs or no exit situations. The commands take a little getting used to as is expected, but since they're mostly based on the original command letter shapes it's not a long learning curve. Terrific job! If you expanded to include ports of other Rogue-like games ( Nethack, Angband, Moria, Ragnorak, etc) That'd be worth paying for.

wow - basically perfect. This kicks - and it is one of the only apps that I've across so far that actually does what it's supposed to do and does a lot. Really nice recreation of the classic game. I can't think of anything to complain about - except that I don't really have the time to waste on games like this anymore :( If I was 8 again, this'd be eating up a lot of my time. Thumbs up!

Good Game But Awkward Commands. Once you get used to the move commands, it's pretty much like the Unix Rogue except it's over generous with the items you find. I remember in the Unix version, items were very scarce. Also, it's not entirely faithful to the Unix version as there are new potions and scrolls not seen before. Issues: 1) When the inventory is displayed the command button doesn't work right. It should clear the inventory and proceed with the command. 2) It identifies scrolls and potions after they've been used but it does NOT identify the wands after usage. Why? At least let us write notes to ID the wand. 3) Yeah throwing potions at monsters would be good. 4) Wizard mode doesn't do anything. In the Unix version you go up a few levels, get splint mail and a two handed sword. :)

Great implementation of gestures!. While it does take a while to learn, the gesture system is great and surprised me with it's ease of use once you learn it. I was expecting the learning curve to be much steeper but once you get the basics down it becomes very intuitive. I only hope he expands on the game itself. A crawl version of this would make my life complete. Being able to tie into a server like c.a.o. would only be icing on the cake. If you don't know what rogue is, try it on a pc first and learn the basics.

Rogue: best roguelike game!. This is a great port, and I'm happy to see it on the iPhone. The gesture-based interface is tricky, but it is no more obscure than the keyboard shortcuts of the original. Graphics and responsiveness are great on the iPhone and the pulldown menus are better than a keyboard system. Landscape mode zooms out so you can see more dungeon but everything gets small -- a pinch and zoom/pan interface would be sweet, as would some battle sounds. The port stands up just fine as is though, and is highly playable and ready to play, so long as you know you're playing a graphically simple, ancestral computer game. Can we get Nethack and Elite next, please? :-)

Good port, but there are a few minor bugs.. This is a decent port of a great game, and it really gives me hope that we’ll see more complex roguelikes such as nethack or moria sometime soon. I have run into a couple of bugs, particularly with directional commands such as "zap" and "throw" — especially "throw." Sometimes "throw" just accesses the wrong item completely or suddenly jumps to a different command menu (usually asking what item you want to eat). These bugs are frustrating, but the game is still playable. Hopefully they’ll be fixed in an update soon. [This review was written on December 2, 2008 -- if the app has been updated since then these bugs may have been fixed.]

Standard port, could be much more. A faithful reproduction of Rogue, which is both positive and negative. I hope future versions will take advantage of the interface, instead of giving us long command lists to scroll through or obscure gestures that often fail or are misinterpreted. The help page is much more user-friendly than the actual game, so I hope some lessons are taken from there.

The future is in the past!. I love this game. It was a little wired at first but it's great. I want more retro ports!!!! Nintendo should get in on this. I'm not holding my breath on that but if they just realesed some gameboy classic ports they could rake in the cash. Same with sega gamegear. Anyways dreams aside this is a great game and I hope to see many more classic games coming to iPhone. Free or otherwise.

Big fan of Rogue from back in the days but this version has issues!!!. I love rogue.......just not this iphone version, the original. This version is buggy as heck and the worst bug is having to start over because the program crashes and when you restart, it starts you with a new game. i tried many many times and half the time the program has crashed and erased my game. this has to be fixed to be playable.

An excellent game. I had never played this game before, and although it was frustrating at the start, I became addicted to it. For people who have never played, it takes a while to understand what's going on. Even with the instructions, it took a lot of time figuring it out on my own. After that, I enjoyed the game alot, and have played almost nonstop since getting it. It is an outstanding app.

Awesome. Absolutely addicting and brilliant. I'm actually kind of angry that I beat it, because now I don't play it anymore! Oh well. Now I can get some sleep. Best iApp ever. No bugs and you'll get the hang of the gestures. If you run into a no exit situation, it means there's a secret door or path. The Ring of Slow Digestion is your best friend!

Great classic game; iPod interface is well thought-out. Thank you very much for this port and for making it available for free. The interface is well designed and I'm amazed at how playable this game is on an iPod. I have one suggestion: when commands bring up a list of items, the list should include an option to pick an item that's not of the default type. For example, the "throw" command only lets you throw weapons, so there's no way to throw a potion of confusion.

My Childhood Game. May not be the exact replica of the game that we all love, but it is an amazing game by itself. Has some bugs that I hope get resolved eventually, but functions just fine!

Deadly creature. Please return the previous version to App Store. My latest issue with this one - on level 8 cleaning up my inventory, found a Leprechaun to zap with one of my three unidentified and unused wands, when I selected direction the app closed. When I reopened it, the save slot with my character had vanished. Was it a new, deviously powerful Stave of Character Invisibility? Doubtful, since there have been many other times that I have been dumped, locked, killed, and most of all frustrated by this version. What good is a potion that displays items that are covered by an overlay, requiring travel to all three rooms at the bottom of the map? The deadliest creature in this dungeon is the developer.

Great bug Control bugs. Just like the original. Awesome. Already too many hours spent. 😊 Bug: if you scroll quickly to start or end of menu, then there is a risk it will choose the wrong command / item. Especially bad when throwing, quaffing or reading. Please fix it. Gestures are very hard, I can use only three to four faster than awkward menu.

Well, it IS rogue..... Very good use of the Ipod Touch interface. Portrait mode is graphical, landscape is the ascii map. Most of the time the swipe interfaces are intuitive after the first hour or so of "how do I do..." and using the button interface. Would get a higher rating if it actually implemented some of the rogue elements properly - the character type appears to be meaningless - they all start off identically statted and equipped, from what I can see. Still, for those of us used to the classics, it's a good port - looking forward to the updates that fix the character types. I want my archaeologist back (ok, that was NetHack, but still).

Great possibilities. If make a little less buggy. It can be a great game. Nothing else close to this on Apple

Never played Rogue before.... ...but I thought I would try it out with this. It kind of lags at points but I really enjoy it. After researching (re:wiki) Rogue, it seems to me that this is an accurate port. The coolest feature is that you can switch between some pretty good sprite graphics to the full-on ASCII just by rotating the device. Five stars because the iPhone/Touch needs more games like this and Rogue for the iPhone needs some more love, not to mention it's a great game.

Old version was a lot better. The original version of this app worked very well and was a lot of fun. This all new version, however, is much harder to use and full of bugs plus crashes a lot. Can’t recommend this current version — bring back the old one, please.

Great for any rogue or roguelike fan!. This is a wonderful piece of nostalgia that I'm likely to waste many hours upon. The game itself is a classic. If you've never heard of Nethack or Angband, then you might not appreciate this game. It has a very steep learning curve. The gesture system is a little difficult to pick up, also. Definitely needs a menu interface added. However the game also includes an extensive help file to explain everything. It's free! Try it! Despite rogue not originally having graphics, a tile set has been included and the feature to switch between text and graphic mode by tilting the iPod is brilliant!

Execllent port of a classic. This is a faithful recreation of a classic game that I have played on & off for over 20 years and have still yet to win. The iPhone is not a great platform for this since it made use of a full keyboard. The devs did well with the interface though, as the most frequently used commands are easy to do & remember (not that you really need to if you use the button at the bottom). However, the graphics mode of this feels unplayable to me as you only see a small portion of the map - leading me to go into the same place twice unnecesarily. It's a good thing I like the "old school" ASCII interface though. I recently purchased "Rogue Touch" and it was not disappointing. They actually made the interface much smoother than this one (no screen commands and fewer presses to do actions), and the map they have in it fixes the gripe I have with this game's "graphics mode". If you like the feel of the free Rogue but not the interface, I'd suggest spending a buck or 3 on it. A nice feature for future updates: 1. A "recall last message" command as sometimes you can miss it.

I want to love it but.... ... but it just isn’t as easy to use as was the version before the major iOS upgrade. It’s more work than fun.

Good port but could be much better. I played the original long ago and would spend countless hours in my schools computer lab. After I got older I missed the hours of simple entertaining fun trying to make it deep into the dungeon. This game falls way short from other ports I have played and like another said there doesn't seem to be a difference between classes other then graphics. The Mage can't cast etc and I want me monk. Honestly I would like to see labyrinth ported over. It's freeware with open license on the pc. It's also true to the classic with a graphical interface. Over all it needs work and more polish

Great port of a classic. With very few problems, this adaptation of rogue opens the door for the iPhone interface to bring any roguelike. I play it often, prefer ASCII mode and find it as challenging as I'd expect. One issue that I have is certain autorun behaviors lead to difficult movement through mazes. That's my only real complaint, and it is just a result of the iPhone. Not a big deal at all. Great job and I look forwad to nethack!

seemingly unplayable. I figured out how to move around, but it wasn’t obvious to me at first. I was thinking it was relative to the @ but it turns out to be more about specific spots on the screen: left, right, top, bottom, and then the corners (for diagonal moves). I guess I solved that puzzle! It would be nice if moves could be more responsive and quicker. On a side note, panning around is possible while pinch-zooming. (I’d prefer being able to do this by one-finger dragging.) Again, it would be neat if the controls could look more retro/ascii in monochrome mode. — Original reaction: This is like trying to get a cat to go where you want to go. 80% of the time, it just stubbornly stays put. Sometimes it does move, but not where you mean to go. Other times, it just goes all the way to the opposite wall when you just wanted to move a little bit. If the movement itself is meant to be a puzzle in its own right, good job—it’s a challenging one. I have no idea about the actual game itself because I’m too distracted trying to get something, anything, to happen on purpose. And I actually paid for this...?! On another note, it would be nice if the entire UI could be retro/ascii in monochrome mode.

Yep! This is rogue. Once you figure out the gesture interface, you're up and running. In a few respects, it's easier to learn than the original full-keyboard version! Once I worked out how to actually attack a monster (swipe from the center all the way to the edge, versus just to the monster, which makes you rest!), i now have something to do at the airport.

Yes!. Awesome memories... This old game is a true case of substance over style - the epitome of gameplay over graphics. So many memories!

Looks cool.. I am downloading it now and it looks cool so, yeah, uummm, OK, Bye!

Mr. Awsome brings back memories

Bad!!!. I could hardly figure out how to play this game! Give this one a miss!

So where’s the keyboard?. Don’t have a Bluetooth keyboard and it seems to indicate it can be played with menu commands only. But I couldn’t find the in-app keyboard to respond to questions like “What do you want to identify”... got stuck right there!

Retro. This game is awesome and it's free get it people!

Has anyone managed to complete this game?. Talk about HARD! I've been playing for a while now and think that I've mastered the various algorithms and probabilities but still can't complete. Have picked up Amulet of Yendor a few times but still get killed shortly thereafter.

Good stuff!. Really liking this game! One minor setback though is that I often get stuck on a level with lots of rooms but nowhere to progress to (no stairs) I've tried looking for hidden doors but is coming back with zilch... My request is that the searching for hidden doors movement is easier...and less time consuming (it gets very aggravating since it needs to be repeated multiple times....) and a reset game button (I've been deleting and reinstalling the game when I get stuck...

Great version. Plays well, looks awesome. Could be my favourite app :)

Great port. This is a pretty faithful remake of a classic, and is the only game I play with any real regularity on my iPod Touch. The good and bad thing about this game is...it is Rogue. This is old school gaming right here, people. If you can finish it you are hardcore. It is incredibly hard, perma-death reigns supreme, and you can't backup saves like on the PC. For the life of me I just can't get beyond level 12 :( All in all a great game, very addicting, and it's FREE!!!

Not a game for touch/screens. I was wondering how this game would work without a keyboard, and it turns out, not very well. You have to remember different strokes instead of different keys.

Good, but missing something.. This is a good start at a Rogue clone. It's missing things you'd expect, but is still fun to play. It's free so try it out and see what you think. Tip: rotate your iPod 90 degrees to switch between map and room view.

Best replay value. Played of over and over. Favorite app. Only missing a save game feature

A great version of the classic game. This is a very faithful recreation of the original Rogue game. The developers have obviously spent some time converting the input to the iPhone's touch screen controls, and the result is pretty entertaining. This has become one of my favourite games to play. Well worth downloading.

I love it!. I'm from the younger generation so I got born a decade after this was originally made. Despite this, I love it! I highly recommend this FREE app!

Good port of an RPG classic. I'll keep waiting for an official iPhone version of nethack but in the meantime Rogue offers some solid ascii based action. Rogue and its descendants are easy to get into and difficult to master. If you want super graphics this isn't for you. If you want a game that is simple to play yet complex enough to provide hours of diversion then get it now.

Great. It may take a little while to get used to the touch controls but once you do controlling your character is a snap. Would be nice if you could throw potions at the mobs. And there is still room for improvement elsewhere but it's still quite solid. I've had very few problems with crashing or slow responce times.

Can’t get Bluetooth keyboard to work. Bought this to scratch that nostalgia itch, and was excited to try out the keyboard support for that truly authentic feeling, but I sadly haven’t been able to get it to work. I’m using iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, and the keyboard works in other apps (like Notes), but it doesn’t seem to do anything here. Am I missing something obvious?

Excellent. This is now my favorite game to play on the go. I love how the game is different each time, although a little more consistency with things like wands and staves would be nice, and perhaps an item guide?

Frustrating as heck. It seems impossible to not die, since the enemies are all stronger than you, combat requires no strategy, and you can't run from enemies. Other than the sheer impossibility, i'm sure it's fun. Too bad i die too fast to find out.

A worthy port. This classic game gets a solid port with some nice additions - love the gesture commands.

meh. Interesting interface commands but lame game play...a little too random. OK for a free game.

The absolute BEST. I seriously love this game! A few glitches in it though - staffs and wands will crash the game. Great fun and I’m so delighted someone brought this game back to life!!!!

Disappointed.... Was excited when I saw this on the app store, but faded once I actually started playing. The touch/gesture controls compltely ruined the game making it virtually unplayable.

Can't play. The game crashes on startup. Please fix it :(

Stupid kids. It's a great remake of the classic. All the low reviews are from ignorant kids that never player the original.

Nostalgia / throwing it all away. Thanks for a great free version of Rogue -- could I convince you to fix the bug wherein you throw random items (such as your ring of slow digestion) instead of arrows?

Great!. This is a great game! Mabye in the future there could more food and more magic.

YAY. w000t rogue rocks i cant believe they have that on ipod touch!!!

Completely glitched. Won't open on iOS 10.3, and gives a message saying it won't be supported by iOS 11.

Four and a half stars. I've played computer games all of my life but I've been coming back to Rogue over and over again for the past 15 years. I'm thankful to the devs for porting this. Please continue your work and add a few bug fixes! I love this game!

Great game. Fun game, but needs an update to fix the bugs. Can't really complain when it's free : )

Great Update for Fans?. After 20 minutes I could still not figure out how to play the game, so it unfortunately lost my attention. It's obvious a lot of attention went into this game to update not just the graphics but the controls as well, with gestures and what not. For fans of the original who understand how to play it, this appears to be the definitive version.

No longer compatible with iPhone - update required. Crashes on startup, please fix.

Rogue. Most excellent!

Awsome. I loved it man, I haven't beaten It yet but Rogue is a great game!

Nostalgic!. Love the graphical adaptation to this classic! Thanks for making it free! Auto-save is also awesome, 5 stars

Great free game.. Not quite as good as RogueTouch (which isn't free, mind you), but makes excellent use of gestures and swipes to make the game progress at a fairly good pace for those willing to learn them, which still making concessions for beginners in the form of the slightly kludgier command menu. Could use a "repeat last command" button (so could RogueTouch, actually. I think it wouldn't take much polish to make this into a viable paid game. This Rogue is simple as far as rogue-a-like games go, and those looking for something more complex might want to check out iNetHack, but this game offers a surprising amount of depth and replayability for those just starting out or looking for a lighter experience. Two tips for playing this game: 1) Read the manual carefully. Not all the gestures are in the Commands menu 2) If you want to fancy graphics in the screenshots, you have to start with the device in landscape orientation, then tilt it upright after its done loading. At least, I had to. I was able to play it one-handed this way, which I always consider a plus.

Best game on ios. Unfortunately it does not work since iOS version 10.1.1. So disappointing. Please update the game so it works again. This is a truly awesome game that is based on the original version for the very early computers. Once you have it figured out the gestures work very well for game play. I have beat the game several times. The difficulty is intense.

Won't even start. No good.. Won't even start. Just a black screen and crash.

Don't bother downloading.. Not compatible with IOS 11.

Staffs and Wands still crash the game. :-(

Awesome!. I'm gonna rate this game 5 stars because I believe everyone should get it. Pros: Good graphics for a free game. Good gameplay definitly worth the time. Easy to use interface. Cons: Not many different types of armor and weapons. Needs more abilities to make it action based. Because it's rpg needs some type of online. Could use some moving graphics.

i eat babies. i would give it no stars if i could

nostalgia. I think some classes would be nice like how nethack had them, and it's a little slow on response, but other than that I love this game 5 stars from me

Rogue hangs and deletes character. Scroll of Identify does not cause “pick” or “select object” menu to appear. Only way out is to close game and reload. Worse, when you try to Zap with a staff, the game deletes the active character.

Good start. The game is good and it's a solid port, but the conversion is too exact. Why have a dozen gestures when all you need is a simple grid-style inventory and paper-doll for equipping and item management. Shoehorning every single redundant verb into the iphone is the wrong approach imho.

Fig'd out Trow bug, pls fix corrupt save!. Excellent, if only developer would fix the corrupting save file that causes startup crash, he would be famous! Throw bug made unplayable, until I learned to throw by swiping across middle of screen in direction of throw. Hate to complain about a free app, but hate to see an awesome app near perfection abandoned by the developer. (issue known since 2009)

Great Game, problem with app.. Great game, easy to play and get used to, for the most part. I love this game, just wish it wouldnt crash so much on my iphone.

Fun and addictive. But the random crashed are killing me... It's bad enough dieng of hypothermea by those darn tree things... But to crash at level 5 is annoying as hell... None the less it's fun.

Almost there. Nice port though the controls are a little awkward and the difficulty level is far steeper than the classic. Download this version if you are in to frustration.

Addicting!. Takes time to get familiar w commands but once you do its great. Remember to check for secret doors if lost(top right to top left command). I've playn for many hoirs and still haven't beat it and is very replayable.

Quite good. ...the only flaw that I've found (it's a biggie) is thatwhen you make the throw gesture, sometimes it will mess up the menus, causing you to accidentally throw something you REALLY need (mace, sword, etc). This has happened to me multiple times. Otherwise, quite the good port.

How could it get 3 stars!?!?!?. This game is awsome!!! The only problem I can't get past level 13,not that it stops me from Playing. 1 suggestion-add a save game option. Still a very good game though

Great port!. Love the graphic version, but the ASCII version is just as fun. Better than some of the paid dungeon games. Commands somewhat awkward at first, but scroll access is easy to use. Belongs on every gamer's iPhone.

Game is ok but seems to hard. I know the game is supposed to be hard, but this one seems closer to impossible. I do play roguelikes, but I have not played THE original Rogue game. About the throwing bug, you can swipe through your character to initiate a throw and it will not bug out.

Good start but..... for a free version, this is just fine. Some minor problems with it, but nothing major. Overall though, the ongoing development of Rogue Touch just makes that worth paying for instead of this free version with no support.

Finally!. I have been waiting for a standard Rougelike to be released for these devices and downloaded it immediately. So far, I am pleased, control scheme is slightly awkward, and could use contextual help overlays to train the user the swipe commands, but overall a solid port. Nethack anyone?

Great..I guess?. Awkward at first buy great once you get the hang of it. & for free? A must have for any RPG fan. I supppose it does get a bit annoying, having to restart and all but that's what makes it different. I have yet to try RogueTouch.

Game is buggy and needs to be updated.. The game needs to be updated to the current os. It's buggy in its current form and crashes when you try to run it from the app icon. It strangely only seems to run when you tap "open" from the App Store menu, which is an odd bug. It pops open a warning saying that the app needs updating.

Just like the old days, but ..... Really like this and it works well on ipod touch. Per usual, I can't get past about level 14 or so, though made it to 20 once. Only "problem" i've run into is inability to throw potions, which would be very helpful.

Classic. This was one of the first DOS games I played. Now my son is enjoying it too. This newest update has some interesting options, but I’m having trouble playing it on my iPhone. Some of the commands are difficult to execute.

Great port of a classic. This is an excellent iPhone adaptation of Rogue. Very nice use of gestures for commands and the ability to choose ASCII, small tiles or large tiles made showed a nice sense of the history of the game. All in all, a very enjoyable version.

Pretty Decent.. A brilliantly done revival of a classic I never got tired of, that I had thought vanished forever with the big floppy disks, and 640k RAM. A few improvements I would recommend. 1) The Ice Monster originally never appeared so early in the game. 2) I remember food items being fairly more commonplace.

Great. This game is great; no problems ever popped up, and it never crashed. Oh, if you draw a W from the top left, to mid left to top center to mid right to top right, they will ask you for a wizards password. The password is BATHTUB.

Worth it for the memories. Reminds me of crashing the university server while playing Larn. I would paid for this.

Buggy!!. Buggy buggy buggy. Lots of times it will create a single room with no exits, and there's no reset button to start over. And before anyone says "search for hidden rooms," trust me, I played the original and searched each space in the rooms when this happened over 50 times and found nada. Not hard to do since you have to starve to death each time it happens!!! Add a restart button!!!

Rogue - nothing more nothing less. This is Rogue, if you put in the time to learn to play, it's absolutely wonderful, otherwise... well not so good. Rogue is fantastic, and this is a great easily playable way to enjoy the classic.

Fix throw bug!!!!. Great game. Very challenging as I remember from 20+ yrs ago. Would be nice to throw potions. Please fix throwing bug. Once it threw a great ring I was wearing. You need every possible edge you can get to get down in levels. Thanks for the free game!! I've never found the amulet of yendor.

Rogue Status!. Awesome port, would like some options added, such as a "how to" tutorial before it throws you in. Other than that, it's great!

good but.... I hate getting decently far (lvl 5/6) and then ending up in a room with no doors and no other way to go which forces me to starve my dude to death to play again. Please fix it. I even tried "scanning" for traps/secret doors everywhere with no success

Great port!. I play alot of tomenet, I'm sure someone here has heard of it. I never thought I would be playing this on my iPod. Good job! Let's see if we can get some adom on here! Port away!

Quit trashing classics. ATTN: stop giving games negative reviews because of their learning curve, it really makes you look ignorant. Alternatively it means good games have two and a half stars and rpgs for toddlers get five.

good port of rogue. This is rogue with better graphics. Excellent approach of putting an old game on the latest technology. So if you like rogue you will definately like this.

AWESOME. what a killer port! the redesign is very well done. Please please please add portrait mode, your game is very nice for one hand play and portrait mode would really lend to that. As it is, my thumb is reaching across the screen to move anywhere but right.

Great, but minor problems. The porting is well done. But I can’t get identify scrolls to work, and I had a crash wipe out the character I was playing. It is the game we played long ago, and it’s beautiful on an iPad. If it worked right, I’d be quite pleased.

No longer works. It worked great for a few months; then (this past month) it would no longer load. You click the app, it loads, and then it immediately quits. It did this on my iPhone 3, and it's now doing it on the iPhone 4S I just got. Very sad. It was a fun game to play.

Wow I just lost my original copy of this. This is Awesome. i am a big fan of old video games, I still have a computer that runs in dos. I just lost my copy of this game recently when i wanted to play it. This is really cool that someone ported it to the iphone/touch. Yay to you

Finally. A great start for what I hope continues to evolve. There are bugs such as monsters and items transforming into others suddenly but the graphics are perfect. Now, if the interface gets simplified (some gestures are obscure and unrecognized) I will get no work done. Now, can someone port Angband????

Rogue. I was never one of those old school games fanatics but my friends brother turned me on to this game and it is so awseome to get it on my itouch but i keep getting this glitch where i can no longer keep moving in tunnels plz fix it because i love this game!

Love it!. This game has such a special place in my heart - lame, I know! I had an old floppy-drive version for years but I no longer have anywhere to play it from. This version is almost identical. Took a bit to get used to the controls, but not bad. THANK YOU to the app developers - you made my year! :D

Epic.. I love this game. Old school, but very simple, one of my new favorite apps. No complaints, I didn't pay for it so I'm not gonna whine about something that was worth way more than what I got it for.

Love it. The game itself is as brutally hard as ever. Love the swipe system. So much better than digging through action menus once you get the commands down.

Very nice. Very nice port. I like the original ASCII graphics and the newer graphics. The controls work well too. Could use some polishing. There is no title screen, can't look at high scores, closes program when you die. It's free so it's a very good download.

Perfect little game. Would like it if they added some options for difficulty. Occasionally, I would like to dungeon crawl with better chances.

Old School Virtual Crack. Great app! Must download ASAP! Take the time to learn how to play and you will soon be playing this more than the games you actually paid for.

Classic Port for iPod!. Decades later, this time-sink still holds up. Minor interface tweaks and yet far and away better than many of the *paid* apps. Can't wait for iPod nethack.

Wizard. Faithful port of the original game as I remember playing it on a Unix-based VAX system in college in the early 80's. Great UI, especially gestures. Would be nice to be able to enter counts - e.g., rest for 30 rounds. Agree with others who have reported crashing issues...pretty frustrating when you've put a lot of time into a good game. Although, I remember similar issues with the original game...

Solid. The gestures could use work, but rogue was never meant to be played quickly

Woohoo! Rogue! On the iPhone!. The gesture-based interface is tricky, and could really use some refinement, but there's no denying it: This is Rogue, and I can play it anywhere now. I really want NetHack, but this will hold me over until someone ports that too. Or maybe I'll port it myself.

A few more things that should be added. Be able to create a rogue, even with limited selections for colors and parts. And maybe just update the graphics mode a little.

Great. I love rogue and alike games, my life is complete now that I have one in my pocket all the time. The gesture system works very well once you learn the gestures.

Finally!. Had this game in the 80's a d have been looking for it forever. I can't find any mac versions, there all for pc's. Now I have it anywhere I go. I'm was addicted then and now addicted even more!!

Kudos for the port, a bit basic. Classic games should live forever. It's refreshing to find little gems such as this one in the AppStore. If you were ever into MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) in the late 80's and 90's, you should also check out Bedlam MMORPG. Like this app, it's making clever use of the iPhone interface to revive a game that should live forever.

Nice work. They've done a great job recreating the game I spend way too many hours playing in college. I find it very stable, and always saves where you have left off. P.S. Please fix the 'Throwing' bug, when using the command menu. I hold my breath each time - never sure what will fly...

Must get!. I never got to play rogue but now I can try it out thanks to this app! I love the pixel style and since the app is free that makes it even better.

Please wait! Rogue game comments loading...
