Great Tool For Everyday. I bought this application because I recently became and expat in a french-speaking country and I don't know any french yet. I have found it really easy to use and the "clear" using the x button not a problem at all. Maybe this new release made it bigger? I looked at all the applications available on itunes and read all of the reviews. I am very satisfied with this particular one. It keeps a list of words recently looked up. The only downside is that it doesn't do entire phrases. Now that would be cool..... but I don't think any of them do it yet. Keep your eyes out for it!

Awesome app, but lousy update!. The update for the French-English dictionary adds a neat feature to be able to scroll faster, but it was at the expense of search returns' speed. It takes up to 4 seconds to return a search sometimes now. This is a five star app, but this update was a step backwards. Please fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I take French at, probably the hardest language course there is, DLI, and I absolutely love this app. It is so much quicker than a regular dictionary, and having the verbs built in is amazing!

Awesome!. Wonderful App. I've been browsing for a great French app for my upcoming move to France. I took 5 years of french and needed app to help refresh my knowledge of verbs and this is simply the BEST out there as far as I am concerned! Worth the money!

Version 1.3 crashes my iPhone.. Title says it all. The German, Italian and Spanish ones do the same. Had to take them out of my Apps directory and off my iPhone and then put back the last version. What a pain. But when it does work, it is great!

Upgrade crashes. The new update crashes upon opening. The old one worked just fine. Strangely enough the Spanish-English version 1.3 works for me even though reviews on iTunes of that version say it also won't open. This is a great app when it works, especially verb conjugations. Rating the app with the stars above doesn't work. It would be 5 if the worked. As it is now 0 stars.

Great product. I bought this and the Italian version of the dictionary. While some reviews said that you could always use the free dictionary online, I find that having an offline access is a good enough reason for spending $20 since very often I am at the location where neither wifi or data network is available (subway, airplane, abroad, etc). That coupled with a relatively good interface and built in conjugator makes this product worthwhile. I do agree with some reviews that if you don't particularly need the offline access that the online dictionary is perhaps sufficient. Otherwise, you should try this product. It is better I think if Ultralingua could give us the demo version so that people could try it out first before giving bad review solely because of the price.

Disappointed. I’m sure this app has many good features, but I have 2 complaints: 1)I noticed a poor translation in the App Store example. Parler de quelqu’un means to speak about someone NOT something. So I don’t trust their translations. But I bought it for the verb tense translations, only to find that 2)they don’t provide them for the more complicated tenses. For me, this dictionary is superfluous.

Great French App!. I was carrying around an old French-English dicitonary around Geneva and France before purchasing this app. I was leery about the price, but it has more than paid for itself in it's ability to quickly look up words and help me learn the language. I have used it for two months now and I'm very happy with it.

Tres bien. This is by-far my favorite app on my phone (just my opinion). I use it constantly throughout the day. In fact, an on-the-go electronic French dictionary is the sole reason that I invested in an iPhone. If I were to suggest anything, it would be small. I would like a larger "x" clear button. Somebody already suggested that, and I think they were spot-on. Second, in-line input suggestions would be very helpful. I search with the thumb of my right hand (it's a large thumb!) and read/write with my left. If the program suggested recent or common words during input, it would make the process less cumbersome and minimize errors. But these suggestions are minimal and aren't meant as biting critique. I love this app. The software is solid and perfectly simple. The conjugation portion, alone, is worth the price. Thank you for offering such a great program. -Alexander Revision: the update is strong. Thanks to the software team for listening to the users. The new "history" button is an invaluable addition. It features word history and translation description. And the interface has undergone a face lift. The developers must have remapped the "x" button coordinates because my clumsy thumb doesn't get in the way of speed anymore. Thanks again. I love this program.

Very good. Not perfect but I’ve Been using this app for years and it’s been reliable. The phone version could definitely use some updating for a smother experience because it takes a moment to learn how to navigate the app effectively because there are minor glitches that they still have not fixed on the phone version of the app. It is however worth investing in !!!

A real winner!. I was initially a little dubious about spending $20 for an app and I wasn't convinced it was going to be all that helpful. Boy was I wrong on both accounts. It is a very easy to use, tremendously helpful and valuable addition for learning the language and traveling. I have found it a pleasure to use and it has exceeded my expectations in every way and has not yet let me down in any way. A terrific app.

great app. I am a korean business person, using french and it is great app. I always wanted the dictionary that I can see Conjugaison easily, and this dream came true through this app! Thank you. One thing I want more is more explanations for each words and example sentences. Great job!

Road-tested in France. I used this constantly while in France. Just like having an excellent French-English dictionary always at hand, without having to actually carry one. One star missing because we ran across several menu terms unlisted here, but I think that is almost unavoidable. Worth the cost, absolutely.

Learning French. I like this app because of the examples for conjugations. However, I purchased this app because I thought that there were sentence examples. I am still learning how to use this app. Perhaps, I haven't figured out how to find the examples for sentences.

Needs some improvement. I have been using the desktop version for several years and was excited to see Ultralingua available for my new iTouch. However, after just some quick searches, I noticed a glaring omission: no personal pronouns! With these missing, it will be tough for beginners to translate such common phrases like "il faut" or "il y a". In the desktop version, the user can lookup "il" and these related phrases appear. There are dozens more like this using "en", which is missing as well. The Ultralingua team has been superb about making desktop version improvements; I'm sure they'll take care of these on the next go-around.

Stalling solved. Stalling problems noted in previous review have all been resolved in latest update. App works fast and flawlessly. Well done!

My most used app. I usually don't write reviews but I had to write one for Ultralingua. I recently moved to a francophone country and this app helps me navigate my intermediate level French in an all-French environment. I would not be able to do my work without it. Terms are super easy to look up and conjugations are super easy to access. I wouldn't ask for anything else of this app!

I like my French. Learning French

Great App. Very useful for people with a working or basic knowledge of French, but not fluent. I use it to help me translate words or find a word to use that I don't already know. This is not a learning app or a phrasebook, there are other apps for that... it is a great reference though which is what I need. Who doesn't have 20 bucks anyway, children?

EXCEPTIONALLY USEFUL - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I am impressed over and over again with this app. It is a constant ally in my project of learning French at an aggressive pace. Bravo. Parenthetically, my previous review was highly critical of the cost of the app. My use of the app has led to my giving it five stars without reservation.

One issue. I’ve been using this app for years and I like it. But it’s got one major flaw in its verb conjugations. The negative past-tense of pronominal verbs in passé composé are, every one of them, incorrect. "Je ne me suis demandé pas" instead of "Je ne me suis pas demandé" for example.

Best current Fr-En offline app, needs improvement. As a fluent (non native) French speaker, I need a serious offline dictionary and I use the app daily. I like that it has expressions integrated into the search feature (though less than the online Word Reference app) the conjugations are extremely easy to use with all tenses listed. Things I would like to see in future versions: 1) MORE FREQUENT UPDATES, current version has become extremely SLOW and CRASHES when certain letter sequences are typed in, forcing you to type (ab) or (ad) and scroll when you wanted a word starting with (ac) 2) a way to ADD YOUR OWN words, definitions, and annotations since I often search online for words not in this app 3) MORE SLANG, older words one finds in literature and informal language 4) wider variety of specific words within everyday categories (food, garden tools, medical terms etc) 5) more compound words like "contact lens solution" 6) default to the keyboard in upon start up for faster searches 7) moving the "switch languages" (English to French vs French to English) button further away from the X out button which erases the search field There are also a lot of UK English definitions without the US equivalent - especially annoying when looking up a slang word. (I'm American)

Awesome Update. This app has really helped me learn French. I've been using it almost daily for a few years, and I love the new layout! Definitions, conjugations and expressions all in one place. I really like the simple navigation and easy to read font. Thanks for the beautiful dictionary and awesome update! Great app.

Perfect translation app. The app is lightening fast. Its dictionary/translation function is probably worth the $20 alone, but the verb conjugator is indispensable. Much faster than any website and leafing through any book.

Love it!!. Update: (june 17) love the new 3.0 update that also makes the dictionary do a real time narrowing list of potential words as you type a term. This was only available in the verb conjugation section before and that missing featurein the main dictionary section was my only gripe. Now this app is officially perfect to me. Highly recommended. This is my most used app after the Todo one. All the other reviews have described the usefulness of this app so i wont say much except that for any college French students like myself or in general, this will be your best investment. The $20 is not expensive!! A good paperback dictionary costs just as much. I know cos i bought for classes. But you find terms and conjugations way more easily and faster than paging through a book.

Best app of its kind. As a student and teacher of French for more than 50 years I've found this to be the best tool available for use both on the spot and in a more studious, relaxed situation. I have used it extensively over a period of years throughout Europe, Haiti, and at home with complete satisfaction.

Waiting for a refresh. I have been using Ultralingua on my Mac for French and German for about 3 years. This app is more than adequate. So I bought the iPhone app for my 3GS and it worked fine. The latest version, updated in late May, crashes on startup. So I am waiting for a refresh.

Wonderful dictionaries!. I have been using the French, Spanish and Italian dictionaries of Ultralingua almost daily for several years. I speak and teach French and Spanish and am learning Italian and absolutely love having these excellent dictionaries at my fingertips on my ever present i-pod!

Another reason to check each app before using autoupdate. Crash on start with version 1.3. The old version worked fine. Reinstalled the old version and it works fine again. Later tried deleting and redownloading as suggested below and that worked. Not sure why this stuff doesn't show up during testing. Can't say I see any difference in speed as stated in the update notes. It is a good complete dictionary. It sometimes recognizes verb infections and translates them, and other times not. It's well priced for a book but relatively expensive in the app world. It doesn't require an internet connection making it more useful when traveling in Europe.

Best language dictionaries!. Comprehensive and easily searchable!

Wonderful app!. This application is fantastic! I am a student living in Paris and am often in need of more advanced words than the cheaper translators can offer. This program is really worth every penny. It's easy to use and quite thorough. I've yet to find something it was unable to define. The verb conjugator is a great addition that can be helpful with the occasional oddity. It's a great reference to keep in your pocket, and it's much easier to carry around than the traditional "pocket" dictionary. I would recommend this app to any and everyone!

Indespensible. I've used this app to help me in reading French novels for years and think its scope and layout are superb.

Serious bug somewhere. Repeatedly crashes. Switching between the dictionary and the the Safari browser seems to do something to damage the dictionary app. Of course switching between the dictionary and other apps is something you do without, so I would not buy this app! A fresh reinstall seems to work OK until I start multasking again, which re-damages the app. It will immediately begin to crash and get progressively worse until it's virtually unusable. I see this app hasn't been updated for a year now. Is it still being supported even? Who knows?

Good, but needs a few more features. It's a great app, a life saver for my french homework, but like most everyone else it needs a better search clear button, a recent search list, and maybe more words (though it already has a great amount).

Don't like the new look. The new interface is less attractive and less useful to browse. It looks like someone decided they could save money by putting a couple of menu items that could've been done as buttons next to a copy of the iPhone user interface and calling it an iPad app.

abandonware. I really liked the look of these apps when they came out, and I bought the Mac version too because of the hotkey feature to define selected words. But this is abandonware people. They haven't done anything to these in years and there is a bug in the French one that won't change contexts properly when languages are reversed. You've been warned.

A five but for the Bad Icon. The Collins Ultralingua dictionary content and new user interface overall is great. The one major, major minus - They need to bring back more easily identifiable icons. The flags worked really well for quick easy access to the right dictionary. Can barely discern the difference now. Also, Do not bother to download the Ultralingua bookshelf. It is just a marketing tool for Ultralingua's benefit not their users'. It forces an extra click to get to the dictionary you need while presenting you with needless commercials and social media options.

Ultralingua versus Collins. Had to go back and install all of my apps that were not backed up, and both the Collins and Ultralingua French apps are up with nearly identical icons. Now i've got both, and I'm out 45$. Great product, but I only need it listed once. It would be pretty cool if I could get at least the cheaper version refunded. Since it's a publishing house instead of a small company, though, I doubt this is even being read. 

Trusty tool for years. Use it all the time as I read French newspapers or listen to France Info. The UI has improved over the years and is rather attractive. One quibble is that the app icon looks dated and could be improved upon. (Would be easier to find in my apps if it were more distinctive). The language coverage is quite good in French although it lacks certain slang words. I like the favorites feature too.

Excellent Assistant But I Miss The Pop-Up Translations from the Computer Version. I have been using Ultralingua since our first trip to France in 2006; at that time I was using a version for my Palm Pilot. Later I was tickled to see that it was available for my iPod and that there was also a version for my Mac. When I got an iPad I got Ultralingua for that device as well. It is attractively formatted, easy to use, and is invaluable when traveling in France or when reading in French. I've run into words it doesn't include, but not frequently, and they are usually either old terms, very new slang, or part of a specialized vocabulary. The only thing I really miss on the iPad version that the Mac Ultralingua offers is the ability to highlight a French word on the screen and have the translation pop up. That feature is a tremendous help when reading online or when writing; it's a great way to check gender so I get the adjective forms right, or to make sure that I'm using a word correctly. I hope that will be included soon.

Just started crashing. Love this app. It has been a really easy to use and reliable tool in reading and studying French. However, it has just started to crash on entering certain French words. Hopefully this can be fixed soon.

Excellent program!. This is a terrific program. I use it constantly, and the updates have made it better. It really exceeds my expectations of what a dictionary can do; it has words in context, figures of speech, easy access to conjugation.... great tool. There are other french programs for learning I've found for the computer, but nothing else for the iphone that is this helpful. And, no, I don't work for them!!! I've just bought other programs that are more trouble than they are worth.

C'est merveilleux!. I was using one app for dictionary and a second for verb conjugation and bouncing back and forth. This app had all in one. You can enter conjugated verb and it suggests infinitive. It provides required prepositions for verbs as appropriate. My French homework would be impossible without it!

French Dictionary Little Help for Beginners. Lack of sound is big negative for beginners hoping to learn French. Less than ideal interface. Remembers words looked up. But easy to delete history with no warning if misplacing fingered selection by a hair. Great dictionary if you can already pronounce French. But appropriate price would be $7, not $20. The over-10MB size means carrier won't allow download on iPhone and can be slow to get over wi-fi.

Pretty Good. This application works well and is user friendly. However, it does not translate phrases. It will translate both ways and provide modern examples of the word used phrases and idiomatic expressions. Also, it will conjugate words in all tenses both for English and French. This is pretty cool.

Highly Recommended. Very well made program. The conjugation feature is extremely useful, and the program in general is well designed and easy to use. A little expensive, but worth the cost. R

Best Conjugator Around. This is a fine dictionary, and the functionality suggestions made by reviewers would certainly make it even better, but the conjugation function is fantastic. You type in the infinitive, and then just choose the tense or mood. Instantly all forms of that specific verb will appear--not just a sample verb that conjugates the same. For me, though I'll miss my well-worn Bescherel and even my high-tech Cassio, having the letter-perfect form presented, with doubled letters, disappearing accents and all, is a great time saver.

Great app, but crashes too often. The Ultralingua team needs to pay attention to this. It is ridiculous and unacceptable that the app should crash when looking up a word. There is mo way to re-look up the word after a crash. This NEEDS to be fixed. I also have the Spanish version and it crashes less often. Please fix this! It is very frustrating.

What happened to landscape mode? Thumbs down!. I also have the German & Spanish dictionaries from Ultralingua, and can't believe that with this update, the landscape mode is gone from all three. Frankly I'd much rather do without the latest 'improvements' but at least be able to use this on my iPad. The worst part about it is that even in portrait mode, when you try to enter any text for search, the keyboard that pops up is in… landscape mode, which blocks the field where you're supposed to enter the text. Thus rendering this app TOTALLY useless. Please fix this PRONTO!

Great App!. I have always been a fan of the Ultralingua French dictionary, and have had it as a desktop application for as long as I can remember. It is absolutely wonderful to have it on my iPod Touch, so that I can translate things even if I am away from my computer. I would have given it 5 stars for content alone, but there are some irritating things about the interface. After you search for a word, it would be great to just be able to click into the search field and it were automatically blank ready for your next search. (You have to click the "x" to clear the field, which is easy enough, but sometimes you do forget and you get something that looks like this, bonjourprendre. So, that would be a nice fix.) Also, it is easy to accidentally switch between languages and not be aware of it, which can be mildly irritating when you can't figure out why there are no results. All in all, I love this application and when the interface becomes a bit more user-friendly, I will have no qualms about giving it 100 stars! I recommend this for any French student, Francophile, or serious traveler. I have had a lot of fun with this app and will be enjoying it until my iPod dies!

Eric. As a linguist,I can tell you that this ia a superb language tool. Cheers Eric

Handy dictionary. A good dictionary with a useful conjugator. I would love for the entries to be a little more comprehensive. It's a little buggy and slow; fingers crossed that it will be fixed in an update.

Good, and very useful, but could be much better still. Being able to carry around a French-English dictionary in your iPhone is fantastic - throw away your heavy paper version. However, it's also frustrating to see so little use of the electronic format. They should add some sound (common words pronounced), have better one-touch links between entries, add in a phrase book. This application could be the gold standard. At the moment there is plenty of opportunity for a competitor to leap-frog over ultralingual's app.

Great. If the ultralinga Collins pro French-english was out when I bought this I would of gone with that, this goes along well with the straight French version as it also has a thesaurus and a lot better definitions than a translation dictionary.

Good app. Very good French English dictionary, like the conjugations !! The app. Speaks the French if required, You receive both iPad and iPhone versions. I use the apps for learning French with the excellent duolingo, app. language course.

Disappointed with all the major glitches. Purchased this thinking it would be a good companion, and it is. But it does have some major glitches (Bugs) that should not be there for the $24 price tag. These occur on both the iphone and itouch. i.e. Importantly. If you search for a word in the French dictionary that is incorrectly spelt or not in the database, it brings up a "No entries found” screen, and also Suggests some other possibilities of the correct word on the same screen. However the links to these other 'Suggested' words are always broken. When you press on the link of the Suggested word you get another 'No entries found' screen but without the suggestions. This is very frustrating when you are unsure of the spelling of the word. There is also no way to enter accents on the keyboard, which can be crucial with the French language. In fact can be the main reason why you get a "No entries found screen” in the first place. In addition, It often crashes when entering certain words. ie. 'Faire' for instance This could be a great tool if the developers release an update ASAP fixing these crucial bugs.

Smart app choice. Even when typed in conjugated verb will display the original verb Also has full brechelle works really well A little expensive but I need this for school and it does what it says

Pricey. its pretty good and all but $20 is pretty steep for this app its good in french class for me so considering ill be using this for at least a yr i guess $20 is somewhat worth it i dont recommend this for a one time kind of use thing tho

Perfect. I used this on a trip to Paris and it was extremely helpful.

Fantastic App. Great app with a nicely implimented verb conjugation feature - with all the tenses (in both languages). Solid value, considering my two daughters are studying French & they (& I ) have this deep resource easily at hand. Next feature request is for a voice synthesizer.

It's not bad but needs bug fixes.. This app looks good but it often crashes with no messages and then you need to restart... Offten is like every 5 min.

French English Translation Dictionary by Ultraligua. The conguation aspect of this app is convenient -- it would be very handy for students. It's an adequate french-english dictionary, but not nearly as useful as my Sharp Electronic French-English Dictionary. I think the "translation" part of the title is misleading. For example it doesn't translate phrases.

Pgr. This is a very basic dictionairy. The price should be $2

Amazing app !!!! But .... ... could you please make it optimized for iPhone 5 !!!! Please !!!! Other than that !! It's an awesome app !! Thank you !! :)

Just what I needed. I use 6 of the Ultralingua dictionaries at home for research and when traveling. They're great.

Great dictionary. This dictionary is an excellent reference book. It does everything I expected and some other things, some of which are listed below, very well: - switches back and forth between English and French dictionaries without erasing your search box text, - allows tapping on any word (english or french) in the definition to take you to that definition - the 'history' list can quickly get you back to a previously looked up word, and you can sort the history list in different ways which makes it more useful - makes word suggestions as you type in the search box, as you may not always know the correct spelling of the word you want to look up - provides the conjugations for all verbs and provides a button to select the desired verb tense Make sure you take the 2 minutes to read the instructions, accessed by tapping the lightbulb. I highly recommend this dictionary as a great supplement to learning the French language.

I tried the new design GUI - no thanks. BRING BACK OLD INTERFACE - as option perhaps. OR FIVE NE MY MONEY BACK!! The old design had its flaws (too thick, more taps necessary) but it was efficient. Now u have to scroll kilometres and miles of text to get to what I need and it's not good on eye too.

Awesome resource. Amazing resource to have in tut pocket. Especially at university level. I didn't buy a 29$ dictionary cause this is soo useful. Excellent resource to have when doing hwk. Only wished the GUI was more responsive to touch when trying to input text In the white textbox. I always have to touch the box 3x for the app to let me type a word.

Useful!. Good dictionary. Advantages: * Gives you conjugations for all tenses * Gives you expressions * Gives you translations for slang * Doesn't require internet access! Disadvantages: * Should have an update where it gives a whole list of idiomatic expressions - would be more useful! * Should have a pronounciation tool * Price is kind of expensive! If the update(s) above were given, 20$ would be a bargain price! All in all I give this app 4 stars :D Really useful tool in French class! x

Excellente application. J'espère que le correctif pour ios 6.1 arrivera assez vite car ça ne fonctionne plus

I dig it. I bet I use it 40-70x a day... it's the most-used app I've downloaded, by far, and I recommend it to any of the students in my classes who ask about it. Overall, no regrets - although for $20, I think it could have a bit more going for it. I wish it had more memory, to review new words on weekends, and it could really use horizontal keyboard capability. I wish there was a francais-francais version, too. :)

Snuh. Basically, a dictionary. A very expensive dictionary. Would be better with either a translator or useful phrases included in the price.

Fix it, please!. I updated the up on 21.05.10 and it crashes before opening everytime! It was excellent before that problem. I had a version of these dictionaries in my Palm and then the advantage was that all the diccionaries I bought would merge allowing to go from one language to the other, and to a third one or a forth one ( for example look for the French word for "sun" and then go from "soleil" to its German word.) Can you had that feature??? It would be awsome for everybody like me who speaks several languages and is imerged in a bilingual culture having a third language as mother tongue.

phenomenal. This is one of the main apps I was excited for and it's every bit as good as the desktop version and cheap to boot. With a great verb conjugation dictionary, it's also much better than Wedict and well worth the price.

Absolutely great!. Very useful dictionary. Translates both ways, conjugates verbs in all tenses and writes numbers in French text format. It saves all history. I use it intensely in my French class n can't live without it now.

Awesome. Works great so far. No idea what the other complaints are all about. $20 is a bit pricy though.

Great app. Very good app! May I suggest including a short definition along with the translation. Other then that, I am very pleased with this app despite the high price!

Not any better than previous version!. A proverb says tha the best is the enemy of the good. I think that it is what happened with the Ultralingua dictionnaries (I have three of them), they are surely not more useful than the previous version! And before I could chose the right one instantly by looking at the flag on their respective icon. Now I need to put on my reading glasses to read the barely readable text on the icon!

Update is not free!. I was about to update this app on my iPad but it was rerouted to app store and asked for my confirmation to pay 19.99 !!

20$ - plus cher!. Selon moi, 20 $ est plus cher pour un traducteur. Mai il fonctionne bien.

New version also a winner. I reviewed version 1.2 back in 2009 and have been using all updates since then. The current version also makes me happy. It’s never let me down.

An excellent app carrying a beginner's dictionary. The framework of this app is very good – it's been through many iterations, and on many platforms: I've purchased it and re-purchased it for Newton, Palm, MacOS, OS X, and Windows over the years, in addition to this iOS version. It served me well when I was a beginner, but now, it just doesn't have enough words, nor are the definitions nuanced enough for me to trust that I'll use or understand a word correctly. If you are a beginner, it may be the right choice for you, but please read on. The Larousse bilingual is a better dictionary (and is much less expensive), but that app isn't as good as this one. Ultralingua's own FR-EN Collins offering is a better bilingual than this, and uses the same excellent dictionary engine as this, but is much more expensive. For a similar level of investment, one can purchase Le Petit Robert for iPad – there is no better one-volume monolingual dictionary currently available in print or in digital form than the Robert. Alternatively, Robert's Dixel is also a superb monolingual dictionary – less scholarly than Le Petit, but including more proper nouns – and runs both on iPhones and iPads. (If you're not yet at the level that a first-rate monolingual makes sense for you, then this dictionary may, in fact, be just right for you. I'd still encourage you to stretch a bit by trying the Larousse bilingual, however.) My compromise is to grumble about how clunky the Larousse bilingual is, use it only when I'm stuck, and mostly use Le Petit Robert, or the Dixel if my iPhone is the device at hand. In the final analysis, however, it comes down to whether the underlying dictionary will support me. In reading an article in Le Monde yesterday, for an example, I needed to look up 6 words. Only one of them was present in this dictionary, and the proposed definition was insufficient. In contrast, all 6 had good definitions in the bilingual Larousse, and in Le Petit Robert. None of those words was arcane; the Sunday Le Monde magazine section is written, after all, for a wide (but Francophone) audience. There's almost never a situation for which this Ultralingua bilingual remains the best choice for me. A guiding principle one hears in one's study of Software Engineering is the desirability of designing for "a low threshold, and a high ceiling." This dictionary provides the first, but not the second.

Excellent; worth every penny. Love how everything is linked and clickable. Makes suggestions when you mis-type. Great for looking up words. Powerful and comprehensive. Totally worth $20. Top notch.

Excellent untill I restored my iPod!. After I restored my iPod and put all my apps back in, the conjugation for this dictionary stopped working! This was very disappointing! Even after I downloaded it again!

Very Disappointed with this Update. The old version of the app was so much easier to use. This new update seems very elementary and is just not as good as the earlier version.

Seconding: Crashing w/Certain Words. This app was rock-solid until recently. Now, certain words or letters cause it to crash, every single time. Example: Fre-Eng. g a r -> CRASH!

No QUALLETY COTROL. Do not buy version 1.3.. A company without good quality control. Wait until 1.3 is updated and buy after reading most current reviews. The previous release works great on my iPod.

Crashes - doesn't work any more. I can't use this app any more!! FIX IT...

Struggling student. Absolutely marvelous. Extremely easy to use. I wish it could also pronounce the words.

French man. If u could make it talk like the app "my language pro " it will b great, I'm a French man who is learning English but sometimes I don't know how to pronounce certain words so if u add the talking it will b awesome.

Version 1.3 crashed. I updated the version to 1.3 and it crashes. I could not even open the APP any more. I unistalled the update back to 1.2.5 and it is fine. Please fix it guys. Other than that it is a good app. Thank you.

Keeps crashing!!!!. I just downloaded the new update and now it won't open on my ipod touch! I restarted the touch numerous times and this app is still not running- fix it or give me my money back! It was very useful, when it worked, but now they just destroyed the app.

Moutain lion?. Whoa, typos in a dictionary? At this price? Loved the Ultralingua Palm app (Spanish). Not too impressed w Collins Spanish app, so chose this for French, but I'm disappointed so far...more later.

Update. Just downloaded the most recent upgrade. Don't do it! The app now keeps crashing! Stay away! Paul NYC

Great app!. I use this almost ever day. Just really useful and handy. I'm surprised that there aren't a bunch of reviews already! Great on my iTouch and iPad.

Excellent tool. I am attending school in France and find this app extremely useful. The linking available in the latest update is a great feature.

Latest iPad update ridiculously slow. The dictionary is still terrific, but the latest iPad update slows the app to a crawl. The app sometimes takes seconds to recognize key presses, and seconds more to return a search result. Oddly, the same app on iPhone works instantly.

Great App. This is a wonderful app, easy to use and great interface. Get this app and you will not regret it.

Not Current With French In The News. During the end of negotiations with the U.S. and Iran the word "Raprawshmahn" came up however it does not appear in your dictionary! Current events is the language needed. JECIII

Very good. Single handedly saved my grade in French class this year.

Now 5 stars. I had previously given this app one star, but the developers have fixed the bugs and this app is now tip-top. Great app.

Notes on Content, Function, and Convenience. As an undergraduate student who is majoring in French, I find the convenience of a French-English dictionary on my iPhone to be irresistible. For this reason, I purchased Ultralingual's French-English dictionary three days ago. CONCERNING CONTENT: So far, so good. I have yet to happen upon a word that the dictionary is unable to translate. Although, I must grant that I am not yet fluent in French nor have I actually attempted to "stump" the application by searching for rarified vocabulary. However, after three days of enjoying the advantage of an ever-present French-English dictionary, I am satisfied thus far. If this product really does contain 250,000 valid entries as Ultralingual claims, then I do not foresee a problem to arise regarding the application's content. After all, my beloved Collins Robert French-English College Dictionary contains 350,000 entries - only 40% more than that which I can now find anywhere, anytime in my pocket with the Ultralingual iPhone application. CONCERNING FUNCTION: The application’s functionality poses minor, but unnecessary, inconveniences to the user. Here’s what I’ve noticed: (1) As another reviewer has noted, the dictionary’s search bar does not automatically clear itself when the user proceeds to type a new entry. Considering the minuscule size of the search bar’s “x” button (which serves to delete the previously typed content within the bar), the user finds difficulty in regaining an empty search bar in which to type his or her next entry. As another reviewer noted, one may end up searching for “bonjourperdre,” instead of finding the meaning for “perdre” after looking up “bonjour.” (2) There’s no “back” button! For the user who searches for a word only to find him or her self in search of several more, the lack of a feature to return to the previous page is a pain. For instance, if I am to search for the French translation of the word “inconvenience,” I would be met with three entries: “incommodité,” “contretemps,” and “gêne.” Let’s say that, from this point, I want to check for the pronunciation of “incommodité,” for other meanings of “contretemps,” and for any idioms that may exist for “gêne.” I am able to tap one of these three entries to be taken to its page (which is, by the way, a convenient feature), but once I have been taken to the page of, let’s say, “incommodité” and have verified the word’s pronunciation, I find myself stranded there, incapable of returning to the entry of “inconvenience” with the same ease at which I left it. Looks like it’s back to old search bar to type the word “inconvenience” a couple more times if I would still like to check out those other meanings of “contretemps” and those idioms for “gêne.” The "back" button is a simple feature - it should be included! (To the application’s credit, as referenced above, the user is able to merely tap any given word on any given page to be offered a link to that word’s entry page, conjugations, and even to a Google search of the word. Great feature!) IN SUMMARY: The happiest buyers of this dictionary will be those who desire convenience. Despite search bar issues and a missing “back” button, having 250,000 French words and phrases on a phone provides users with amazing (off-line) accessibility to improve their French language skills outside of the classroom and away from the computer and hard-copy dictionary. This product receives 4 out of 5 stars for meeting expectations of a digital pocket dictionary application while suffering minor functional problems. Now just to cough up twenty dollars…

Excellent, but could be improved. Excellent app! I don't understand why people are complaining about the price so much. A decent electronic translation dictionary costs at least $50. The convenience of having a dictionary on your iPod without carrying around a separate device and without using battery-draining wi-fi is definitely worth $20. There are 3 things that drop my rating down to 3 stars: (1) The most annoying thing about the app is that the search bar doesn't clear automatically. I usually have to tap the "x" 2 or 3 times before it finally responds. They need to make that button bigger! (2) Where is the iPhone's built-in spell checker and auto-correction? Why is it mysteriously disabled? I rely on it to correct typos. Typing on that tiny keyboard isn't perfectly accurate, and it's very frustrating to have to backspace so much. (3) As mentioned in another review: There is no back button! It should at the very least have a back button or a recent searches list. Am I the only one who forgets the translation of a word a minute after looking it up? Otherwise, it's a very good dictionary. It has pronunciations, parts of speech, gender, and also phrases related to the search word. Searching: If you don't know the exact spelling of a word, it will make suggestions, but you still have to be pretty close to the correct spelling. Also, you don't have to type the infinitive of a verb to get the definition. You can enter any conjugation. Looking up phrases is kind of tedious. If you don't type in the phrase exactly right, it doesn't show up. But if you do a search on just the 1st word, you can find the phrase by scrolling through a (sometimes very long) list. The conjugation feature is excellent. It displays a complete conjugation list for each tense/mood that is very easy to read and navigate. It even tells you if you're supposed to conjugate with être. A cool feature: you can tap on any word and it will bring up a menu: dictionary, conjugate, and google. If the issues mentionned above were fixed, I'd give this app 4 stars. 5 stars if a "flash cards" feature were added. Being able to add words to a study list via the pop-up menu would be convenient. I look forward to updates from the developers! --- UPDATE: I originally gave this app 3 stars when I first bought it when it first came out, but now I give it 4.5. I'm very impressed by the vast improvements that were made with all the updates. The developers really take these reviews seriously! I love the back & forward buttons and the search history. I have a suggestion though for the search history: it would be useful to delete individual entries, so the history can be used as a study list. Maybe swipe an entry to make a delete button appear next to it? Also, I liked it better when the search box was always at the top, instead of having to press the left arrow/button at the top to look up a new word. It made it easier to use the app one-handed, plus that was one less tap. The most useful app on my iPod touch!

Great but lacks some things. Beat French dictionary app for re iPhone but it lacks features that I believe to be neccessary for a french languag learner. How about a woe of the day feature? Grammar? References? Adjectives?

Great app.. Easy to use, beautiful, tremendously useful. I love the conjugations. And Ultralingua support is responsive and helpful.

Good, useful. Not perfect, but a good, solid resource to have while reading French. I have a large, paper dictionary that is better for multiple meanings and slang, but I have found this Ultralingua dictionary to be very useful.

Disaster, this upgrade just doesn't work. Installed the upgrade to 1.3 on my iPod Touch and the dictionary just doesn't come up. After a few seconds of inactivity and a more or less empty screen, the main menu reappears.

Really poor marketing practices. STINKS!. I had just installed this app when I got a notice from them that an upgraded version is now available. I only had to pay the same price that I just paid to get it!!!!!! I was not given the choice to buy the upgraded app first!

Could still use a little polishing.... Good dictionary, but desperately needs a back-button. A "Recents" list would also be very convenient.

rapprochement. The word rapprochement appears in the app if you know how to spell it, it is the same word in English and is not a new word. Great app!

Fix the update!!!. Invaluable app for language training. The latest update slowed down the search function dramatically - please fix it!

New update. The recent update is terrible. The app crashes immediately on launch with my 3GS.

Extremely useful. Well worth the price! Much better than even a fairly comprehensive print dictionary and far easier to use. I love it!

Upgrade is excellent too!. Just got the new upgrade and now it is VERY FAST! excellent!! Before it was pretty slow but now theres a world of difference. Merci!!! xxx

Good dictionary. This is not formatted well for the iPad. It's very sluggish and the screen space is not efficiently used up. When you tap the help button you can't navigate out of it. You have to close the entire app and start over if you want to loo, up another word. I don't reccommend this for iPad.

Very bad!!!!!. Don't buy it!!! This dictionnay is a rip-off, it doesn't even have full translation for most of the entries. Very dissapointed

Perfect. I have been a huge fan of the desktop version and I'm happy to report that this version really delivers. I can't think of a single deficiency. J'aime ça!

Finally for iPad. This was my favorite French app for iPhone, and i'm so happy it's finally in full iPad mode. Please add a separate conjugation button.

It's aiite. Needs a pronunciatio feature!

Well thought out. It's fast and chique. You'll be the coolest French geek on the block. I am a french major and I use this almost everyday.

I love it. It's what I was looking for for a long time and it is really a good and useful app. Thanks! And the price of $20 is ok!

Not digging the new look. Why fix something that wasn't broken to begin with? I don't like the new look, it's confusing to navigate.

Great!. Cette application marche très bien. Je l'aime beaucoup! Geat app - love it (apart from the occasional crash when searching for some specific words).

Disappointed. Sadly disappointed in this app. The conjugation feature is interesting but the dictionary is lacking many phrasal verbs needed for translation purchases. Too expensive for what it is. You'd be better off buying a 2 or 3 dollar app.

Works for me!. I use this mainly as a dictionary to aid me in my French lessons and so far it's been really helpful!

Contextual menu doesn't work with iOS 6. With iPhone 5 and iOS 6, the contextuel menu stopped working. It's an iOS 6 issue as it's the same with my iPad 3 I just updated to iOS 6. One of the best feature of this dictionnary just disappeared. Ultralingua MUST address the problem! It's time to work on an update! Your are already late guys...

Worth the money!. Great app- I've used this during traveling, and it worked beautifully.

So far, not so good. Restricted range of definitions for words that have multiple uses or connotations. First word I looked up (panache) was given the wrong gender.

Love it!!. if you languages then you will love this app! Wow...just amazing. Great teaching and friendly interface!!

Very comprehensive. I've taken this app with me on several trips to France and fine it very handy. It has idioms, verb conjugations, common word combinations in both English and French.
