(5 stars) "Wonderful for an high intermediate reader like me who often needs a clarification but doesn't want to haul around a heavy dictionary. Collins-Robert Concise Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Soooo convenient!. This app is great. So much better then a book. I can look up things so fast. It would be cool if you could bookmark words and review them later, like a flashcard feature.

Worth the money. This is expensive by app standards especially for something you can get dozens of for free. But you'll be bothered by ads with those and, worse, you won't find words unless you enter them in unconjugated original form with no prefix or suffix. This dictionary is just much more useful and pleasing.

My Favorite Dictionary So Far. I looked high and low for a good French dictionary app that was stable, didn’t crash, had good translations, and worked offline. This is the only one I could find that fit the bill. It’s not perfect but I’m happy to pay $15 for something that just works when I need it to.

Flexible French / English Dictionary. This is not just a simple translation dictionary. It covers the complexity of language and gives you many ways of dealing with this complexity. You must read the instructions carefully to get full benefit from this dictionary. In some ideal sense it is impossible to translate from one language to another as each language is ultimately idiomatic. But this is addressed implicitly by this dictionary. It must be one of the best.

Exactly what I need. Just moved to France, and I have only one year of middle school French under my belt. Up to now, I've relied upon my not-so-little "pocket" dictionary, but it's both too bulky to actually put in a pocket and lacking in what one really needs when learning a language, living here, traveling, etc.: those fine distinctions, subtle differences in meaning, and, most of all, lots and lots of examples. So I knew I needed something else. I gulped very, very hard at the idea of spending so much, but I NEEDED it... How has it turned out? How practical is it? Suffice it to say, I'd pay twice as much if I had to. A great dictionary is indispensable when learning a language or living/traveling somewhere. And this is a great dictionary. Best of all, it fits in my pocket with ease.

Vast improvements. I like the "new" format, although it may have been implemented some time ago. I took 18 months off from French, so these improvements may have been in place for awhile. This is a thorough reference source. I may not ever use it to its fullest. 5 stars. -NK

Conjugator Doesn’t Function — App Closes. Unfortunately, thee app closes every time I try to conjugate a verb. It is a very pricey app that doesn’t work properly. Please fix the bug.

The pronunciation audio is bad. Audio for the pronunciation takes three or more clicks to access. I wish there is a dedicated button for the audio of the word so that it is accessible in one click. The sound quality of the audio is not so good, often with the beginning of the word clipped.

A mixed bag. My intentions in buying this app was to have an aid in my study of French, as I am presently taking French in school. What I got was an excellent, albeit cumbersome and somewhat lacking resource. First of all, this is a powerful app and I look forward to using it when I forget a conjugation or some vocabulary, but where this app is majorly lacking is the absence of a translator or something to help in basic sentence structure. Sentences are formed slightly differenly in Fench than they are in English and it would be nice to have something to display the proper way to form a sentance. I wouldn't even mind if it was simply a tool where you could write (and have it correct you) in French and then spits it back out in English or correct French. For a $25 app, I would've hoped it would had something to actually form sentences. So, would I recommend this? Yes, but only if you know how Fench is structured already or you just need a powerful reference tool; don't buy it If you're starting w/ the language.

Not worth it. Helps with pronunciation? They’re only phonetic s no aural aide. Detailed definitions are one word i’d like my money back if I can get it. Simple dissatisfaction does not qualify I guess..

Great dictionary. A pretty amazing dictionary but extremely over-priced. Happy to have it

Wthomas. Very helpful, detailed reference particularly when used as a second resource after Google translate. Explains idioms and acronyms.

Great tool. An terrific resource for quick consultations. Wonderful for an high intermediate reader like me who often needs a clarification buy doesn't want to haul around a heavy dictionary. The interface is great because it anticipates the word as you type and if your French spelling is weak - like mine is - is saves a lot of time.

Great app, with one little issue. This is easily the best French dictionary app. A lot of care was put into making the interface clean and intuitive. And the content comes from LeRobert- arguably the most authoritative source possible for the French language. The only issue is that it's clumsy to close definitions. You open a definition by tapping on the word, but to close you have to click on a little "arrows" button on the other side of the screen. The definitions also stay open forever, so after awhile a bunch of definitions are open. I'd expect them to be closed automatically at some point, like when you open the app.

Don't waste your money. I'd heard good things about this app, but thus far precisely none of the words I've looked up--"prescience", "grits", and "sprocket"--are in the dictionary. Had I known this prior to purchase, I would have continued to do what I've always done, which is to type the English term + "French" into my phone's internet browser ("sprocket french" for example) and arrive at the translation I'm looking for. The ludicrous price tag on this app has left me with nothing but an incurable case of buyer's remorse.

Inadequate!. I just spent $17 for this dictionary, and within 10 minutes I've already been unable to find definitions of several words that I found with ease on the Collins dictionary site. And these weren't arcane words, but ones I had stumbled across, as an intermediate French student, in Courrier International: "mise en garde" (warning) and "bourbier" (quagmire). Until you can offer a complete dictionary similar to the one you have online, don't advertise it as such!!

Needs some work. Not bad, but not great either. Overall, it will get the job done better than the free options out there, but just barely. The app is really sluggish on the iPad 2; it can't even keep up with the slowest typer. There are a lot of words missing, and, more annoyingly, you're frequently brought to the wrong word when presented with words that have similar spellings. If they can iron out these flaw then the app wouldn't be so bad; it won't replace a higher-end dictionary, but it'll definitely get you through basic French classes.

It is all that it claims to be. I use this a lot and have had no stability problems on iPhone 3gs. I wish the dictionary were a little larger, but it has many words and examples of word usage. Idioms can be a little hard to track down, but that is not unusual. The verb conjugator is very thorough, and it has entries for many verbs. No regrets about buying it at all.

Change of heart. I've gone from disliking this app to using it every day. I was wrong before. I should have taken time to get to know it and understand it, and now I have. I value it not only for helping me with my French pronunciation, but for providing a seemingly endless number of relevant examples for almost every word I look up. This app has become indispensable to me, and I'm grateful for everything it provides! Keep those examples coming!

Collins has been the gold standard. For over fifty years. If you need a dictionary of real quality this is it.

They updated this app and ruined it; Do not waste your money. This was a great app until they updated it. They changed everything that made it awesome and easy to use. Tasks in the previous version, which were repetitive for you, now zero themselves out and you have to start from the beginning and go through each step every time you want to conjugate a verb or some other task. I wish I had known how bad they ruined this once truly awesome program, I would have never updated it. BEWARE, this 4 1/2 star rating you see, it is for the old version, not this junk. Do not waste your money.

Spotty. Having just read the first few pages of "Une ténébreuse affaire" with this dictionary aiding me, I can report that it is almost useless for reading works written before 1900 or so. Missing: coutil, guêtre, carnier, loup-cervier, factieux, rave (meaning betterave). Coverage is spotty.

Worth it. It’s worth it to spend a little money and get this high quality product over the free French to English translators. They have an extensive list of example sentences which is very helpful.

Best French dictionary ever. In the 30 years that I have been studying and using French I have yet to find a better French-English dictionary, whether in-print, online or an app. This app is totally worth the price. You will throw away all other dictionaries once you have this app.

Cumbersome but detailed. This is a little cumbersome and difficult to navigate and use, but it makes up for that with in depth definitions and example sentences. Great app.

Quick and comprehensive. The history function is great - you can go back and study words you've looked up. The only words I have been unable to find are fairly obscure. A random word feature would be a great addition. Highly recommended.

Highly useful!!. I've been living in France for some time now, and this dictionary has saved me on numerous ocassions. It's far better than an online one, since if there's no Internet you're out of luck, and it has excellent examples of how to use nearly any word. My one complaint would be that if I enter a French word, it should be able to recognize it as such and automatically give an English translation, and vice versa. Right now if you enter "ready" while French to English is selected, it will tell you that there's no entry available. It should be able to deduce that ready may be an English word instead... I highly recommend it and think, at least in my situation, it's definitely worth every penny!

No publisher support...no recommendation. Expensive, but excellent product I thought would last me for many years. Little did I know I would have to change computers and Collins would not let me transfer the program to my new one. I cannot ever recommend a product that the publisher will not support. Totally wasted $25... I provided the order number and the receipt for payment and Ultralingua will not do anything to permit me to re-install. Horrible service!

Great dictionary. Bought this application when I moved to Montreal for school. I totally love it especially after the new update that suggests a word as you type it. Developers: please add the pronunciation feature!

So much better than what I had been using.... I am very impressed with this app. I had been using a French-English bilingual dictionary on my Blackberry (I have forgotten the publisher) and thought that was nice. But this app totally blows the BB app away! One really cool feature is that it will recognize conjugated verbs - what a time saver!!! Add to that the fact that it has full conjugations for every verb, and you have a really useful app. $25 seems like a steep price, but I am happy with my purchase. Navigation is taking me a little bit of time to get used to, but I am new to the iPhone, so I suspect the difficulty is with me, not the app.

Number of words too little. There are too many words I can’t find, they need to increase the number of words. I can find more on the Larousse dictionary that is also much cheaper. For $15, they should have way more words.

Amended Review. One would think that for 25 bucks you would get the feminine version of an English noun. You don't. Unless you specifically enter "actress" etc.. Then there is the user interface - which is not nearly as intuitive as it could be. Why would the designers assume that if I enter an English verb, looking for a French translation, that I would want that verb conjugated in English? True, I can get that conjugation by tapping on the French translation, but they could also have made the French-English/English-French button work for the conjugation utility. Having said all that, the usage examples provided for every word are excellent. And the word database seems to be enormous So, all in all, a good app. But for 25 bucks they could definitely have spent a little more time refining the interface.

The Best. This is an exceptional bilingual dictionary. Must have.

The gold standard in translation dictionaries!. I have 3 different Collins-Robert dictionaries and have never found a better dictionary!

Outstanding.. I love the new interface. I'm a daily through-the-day student user. Fast search with everything I need instantly without having to fumble around. No mode switching required. Have had this a while in its prior version and I am BLOWN AWAY by the rewrite. Nicely done, ultralingua!

Very helpful. Well worth the investment - good idiomatic uses as well as explanations. Verb conjugations are useful. Flipping between French and English is easy. Multiple meanings are explained well.

I love these dictionaries!!!!. Well...I study Romance Languages, Spanish(my first language) Italian (2 yrs. of it) and I am about to start French and Portuguese, I own Collins Spanish and Italian pro, and I just bought this one for French I am confident that It won't let me down.....especially since such an old company is behind these apps. it beats carrying a dictionary with you which does not conjugate verbs and does not write numbers for you... BUYT IT!!! It's worth every penny...!

I love this app!. This dictionary is a necessity for any native English-speaker studying the French language or visiting a francophone country. While in France this summer, I enjoyed the fact that I didn't need to be online to use it. Also, in my French courses at Texas A&M, using this app is so much more convenient than flipping through a paper dictionary. Love it!

Best French Dictionary! C'est Parfait!=). This French-English dictionary is the BEST, I have ever used. It is well worth the price. If you ever find yourself stuck on translating a word from English to French this app will help you. type the word in English and get it in French. I recommend to all people who speak French/English. extremely helpful. It deserves its' upmost respect as the best French dictionary. It is also very easy to use. great work Ultralingua, inc. BUY IT!!

App Needs Audio Pronunciations & Random Word Button. This dictionary app has a good intermediate vocabulary but it is yet another dead silent app. It needs the important features Audio Collin's Mini-Gem French-English (beginner's vocabulary) app has. It needs 1. audio pronunciations in French and in English that do not require internet connection, and 2. a Random Word button.

Excellent for language, poor for usability. This app is really good for learning French. I love how words are broken down by separate meanings, how you can flip between French->English and English->French, all the wonderful examples, and all the compositional phrases! However, it’s just not a very usable app. It’s not very intuitive flipping between verb conjugations and translations (although on the iPad it is easier because you get a split screen). When searching a word, you can’t make the keyboard go away without actually hitting search (it would be great if you could just browse the results that automatically come up as you type). To get speech features you have to highlight the words and use the iOS option that comes up, which is a pain. It’s just really confusing. Anyway, for the sake of learning, get the app! They have a ways to go to make it more usable though.

C'est Parfait!. I'm going to France tomorrow for the 5th time in a year. I love this app. Translations are detailed, often with example phrases. I like looking at words I already know just to pick up a new French phrase or two. Tap on a word in an example phrase and that word is opened. Don't worry, the back arrow takes you back to the original word you were studying. Verb conjugations are complete. This is the only French/English dictionary I need.

A modern dictionary. This dictionary translates words in a way that takes one to the various usages of the word more quickly than older versions of French-English dictionaries. The translations seem to be more to the point. And words are nicely matched up with expressions that have the word in it.

Initial Confusion was Unfounded. I was a bit confused when I first used this application. However after reading the introduction and the tips and tricks, I have found that this is an absolutely fantastic dictionary. It provides quite a few examples for each entry and is easy to use after just a minute or two.

Update is a dud. If you haven't updated, don't. If you are thinking of buying, wait. I have used this product in French language school in Paris since September. Content is fantastic. It is worth the money if you are seriously studying French. It has a fantastic dictionary with many expressions, and the conjugation tables are a huge help. Unfortunately, the latest update crashes constantly and is not worth the money until these issues are resolved.

Worth every penny. Compared to a print dictionary costing twice as much, this is amazing. The ability to simply click and get instant conjugations, tenses, declensions, etc is well worth the price. Typeface is easy to read and the user interface is easy to use, but you have to get used to remembering to click to translate in the opposite direction. (This is much like remembering which half of a print dictionary is Fr->En or En->Fr.) This version contains "back" and "forward" buttons which are particularly useful. Although entry-line spell-check is not provided, there is now a useful "Google-style" feature that will suggest other options ("Did you mean...?") if no entry is found for the input that the user just entered. Ultralingua offers a similar dictionary for slightly less money. The two are very similar, but this "Pro" version includes an enormous number of examples of words as used in colloquial expressions (some of which are decidedly "colorful", and not suitable for all audiences). Remember that this is a DICTIONARY. It is not meant to translate entire phrases or sentences. With the translations and grammar tools provided by this app, you should be able to form phrases on your own. If not, you might consider a different type of application, such as a phrase book.

The best... and most expensive. I tried a bunch, and this one was by far the best and most expensive French dictionary for the iPhone. I wish I would have just spent the money on this one first, and not wasted it on the the cheaper ones that had such a limited selection of words....

Hidden commands. I can’t figure out how to find a word or change the word on display . Not a friendly program.

C’est terrible. Over promised and under delivered. That’s this app in a nutshell. Lots of different words that I can find in other French-English dictionaries that are not present here. Difficult to navigate. Did I mention it’s convoluted and difficult to navigate? The “hear a word pronounced” feature that they have the gall to list as an in-app feature relies on you highlighting the word and asking iOS to “speak” it back to you. A huge disappointment all-round and definitely not worth the $15 paid.

Very practical, 🤘🔥. This app is a must. It covers many expressions, idioms and common phrases in both English and French. There are lots of positive points that you can enjoy learning with it. But there is one drawback that somehow gets really disappointing and it’s the audio option in iphone platform that you have to hold the word to let the « speak » option pop up. Instead they can have a simple icon for listening to prononciation just by touching it. Hope it gets done in update.

Not happy. The new interface is difficult to read. There is less information in this upgrade. This was an expensive App. I would like to return to previous version please.

Slower since update. There's a slight lag in the application when typing or favouriting a word. This only started happening after the update. Otherwise it's an indispensable dictionary. iPhone 5, iOS 6.

Superbe je l’adore. Excellente

Prefer this app to a paper-based dictionary. When at my desk, I prefer this app to a paper-based dictionary. The range of words in both languages is extensive and the "switcheroo" device for changing the direction of a search is extremely useful when you need to double back to cross-check a particular usage. The IPA/API pronunciation guide, normal for French dictionaries, is in a large and easy to read typeface. As someone else has posted here, the white-on-grey reverse type in the search box is hard to read and I support the reviewer's comments. My own quibble is that the method for clearing the search box is sometimes very good - you simply overtype the previous entry - but at other times it is necessary to tap tap tap away on the backspace key. If there is some way of forcing the search box to default to the overtype method, please explain. That said, this is a very good and useful dictionary. Pop Vox

Perfect French Dictionary. I loved this dictionary, it's incredibly compact and easy to use, but is just as complete as any physical dictionary. Because of this you can use it in classes and while reading without needing to use an unwieldy paper dictionary. I've never come across a word it didn't recognise (including slang from both languages), and the layout is so pleasing to the eye it's enjoyable to use the app. The ability to look up another word you come across in the dictionary by clicking it is incredibly useful, and there are a lot of little but useful features like spelling correction, dictionary history and the verb conjugator. The only thing that could be improved is the size of the actual history, and the price tag. The size of the history is currently an arbitary 50 results, but a longer history would be useful in case you've forgotten some of the words you've looked up in the past. The dictionary is also bit pricey at $30, and might put some people off. Overall, though, this is an amazing app, and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone who needs a French dictionary.

Dissapppointed with upgrade. I am not happy with this upgraded version. It also seems to have fewer words than my previous version had. It is notably slower than before and I am not a big fan of the "new" user interface format. Would also like to have some basic grammar rules and usage included.

What a Shocker!. Don't update to this version. The other one was much clearer display, easy to use, and would only close down every now and then. It was 5 star. So far, with this version, when I ask it to display English to French, it displays French to English, both on my iPad and iPhone, and all the words come up in one chunk, and you have to hunt through it all to try and find what you are looking for. It has been nothing but trouble. Dreadful. I agree with the other reviews. I have never written a review before other, but felt compelled. We want the other App back please.

Well worth the money. A great dictionary, I can alway find the correct usage in its comprehensive listings. Love the new way verbs are listed... Each improvement adds so much to this dictionary. I spent a long time looking and was dubious about the cost, but I have wasted so much money on other language dictionaries that I know I made the right decision to purchase the Collins.

love this app. This app is amazing! I bought it last year and it was pretty darn good, but then I loved it so so so much more when I went to France and stayed with a French family for a week. It did everything I needed and helped so much with my limited French, I could use it wherever I was, it, was fantastic!

Disappointed, no depth to this. Look elsewhere if you're looking for a French/English dictionary app with any depth of coverage either in words listed or translations given. Wiktionary in a browser is much much better — in fact wonderful.

Perfect for anyone studying French. Love this dictionary, particularly the lists of verb conjugations and grammar examples. It is by far the most comprehensive and useful dictionary I have found so far.

Inadequate. I had to resort to my thirty year old Collins Robert print dictionary because this app did not have the vocab I was searching for !

IMHO, it's not that great.. This app is certainly not value for money. My biggest complaint is that you cannot look up conjugated verbs. Sure, you can get the conjugations for verbs - but you cannot search for them! This shortfall is appalling, given this is the most expensive electronic dictionary in the App Store by a mile, and also given the capacity of the hardware it is running on! You may as well go back to using a book.

Very useful app!. I've had this app for three years, and have in that time used this app almost every day. It makes living in France (at the start, when you're learning the language) so much easier because it's convenient and easy to use, as well as being comprehensive. Great application! I'm not a massive fan of the last update where you can scroll upwards towards words placed previously in the dictionary. It makes it really easy to get lost among all the text. Otherwise, all in all a great app.

Excellent French dictionary. App made by a top publisher of French-English dictionaries, it has all the content of a medium-sized dictionary. The app is much faster to use and 2kg lighter than the print version. Well worth the money.

Great app. I just wanted a dictionary and have got just that. Is user friendly, and I am very happy with it. Would be good to include audio as well

Collins dictionary. I love this dictionary. It is very handy when I’m reading my French novels …so fast! i’ve used it for years now and wouldn’t be without it. TV

Contrast colours not good enough. Dear developers, can we please go back to having black text on a white background for the word search? How can anyone possibly think white on grey is ok for any level of vision? Some of us need a helping hand! Universal accessibility, please! I would give 5 stars if it wasn't for this problem.

Mrs Dellas Macdougall. I have recently updated my Collins English/French dictionary and I am extremely disappointed with the result. The verb conjugation particularly, is like a dog's dinner (please excuse the expression, but I am so frustrated). Instead of being able to print out a page of verb conjugation which is in neat precise columns, it is a mess, taking over 2 pages and almost incomprehensible.! My eyes have to go everywhere trying to follow what was a simple system. Please can I have the old version back as I am on the point of ditching your version completely and looking at another simpler, more explicit dictionary. I have been studying French for three years and found the old version of your dictionary so helpful, and just purchased a new Wifi printer with the intention of printing off the page of verb conjugation as required.

Fabulous. I bought this app a year ago when I went to France to study French full-time for three months and it turned out to be brilliant. I didn't want to buy a traditional paper dictionary before I left because it would just take up space in my luggage, so I bought this app and decided to see how I'd get on without a traditional dictionary in the classes. Well, this app is so much better than a book in so many ways: My favourite is that I can look up a verb without knowing what the infinitive is. It's very useful if you don't know what the verb is (which is why you're looking it up, of course!) It's much quicker and easier to use. I always had it with me so when I was out and about, I could easily look something up. I used it extensively to translate menus! It also came in very handy when I realised that I needed to ask someone something but I didn't know how to say it - I could just pull out my phone and look up a verb or a noun and figure out the question on the spot. It's not a phrase book but it has many, many examples of usage and idioms. Actually, the extensive examples and usage in the entries made it incredibly useful in class. Often I knew the meaning of the individual words in a sentence but I couldn't make sense of it until I found the idiom in my dictionary. The translations are very accurate and up to date. So much so that, if there were ever communication problems between the teacher and a student (which happened every day because it was an immersion class - the teacher did not speak any language other than French), the teacher would turn to me and ask me to look it up in my dictionary so I could tell her, in French, what the student was talking about. She said that my phone was the best dictionary any of her students has ever had. Oh and the verb conjugations are just plain awesome. It's impossible to express how much easier it is to learn different tenses when it's clearly laid out for every single verb. In short, this app made me a much better French student than I would have been without it.

Fantastic App!!! ...Just one possible adjustment.... I love this app!!! Finally I've found a French/English dictionary that includes conjugation and everything I could ask for. There is one thing, however, that I would love to be improved that would make it absolutely perfect... With regards to the conjugation section I find it rather disorganised, I have two other apps (Bescherelle-Le conjuguer & Le Robert-Dictionnaire Dixel) who arrange their conjugation sections much better. For example, grouping the 'temps' under 'mode' headings, e.g: Indicatif: Subjonctif: Modes Impersonnels: - Présent - Présent - Participe Présent - Imparfait - Imparfait - Participe Passé - Passé Composé, etc - Passé Composé, etc - Gérondif Présent, etc This would be so much more organised and easy to use, especially for beginners! I love my Bescherelle app for this reason, but unfortunately it's not a dictionary, let alone a French/English one, so if Collins improved this it would be my NUMBER ONE app. Developers, if you read this, please, please, please consider this improvement!!!!! Thanks :)

Very Good. Very good and authoritative. Conjugations are handy. The only real issue is that you can only search for headwords. If you want to search for an expression, you need to guess what headword that expression might live under, find that, and then see if the expression you want is there.

Almost perfect! Needs more definitions.... I'm using this app to help me fight my way through Dumas' unabridged copy of 'Le comte de Monte-Cristo' that I'm reading on (and got for free from the Gutenberg Project via) Stanza. Looking up a word or conjunction takes about 5 seconds. A double-click later I'm back in my book. It's seamless, accurate and very fast on my iP4. However, there are quite a few (admittedly obscure) expressions in the book that the dictionary simply does not know. I'd love a few more definitions..even $2.50 apps have 80'000 definitions.

Not working. I downloaded the latest version and I can't use the app anymore! It just freezes!!!

Downgrade not upgrade!. Very unhappy with this upgrade. It was good when you looked up a verb you could immediately see the present tense conjugation and the present and past participles, then just double tap for all the conjugations. That was very useful and quick - why on earth have you made it slower to get to this basic information??? I used to love this app and didn't mind how much I paid for it but it's a lot less useful now. Please rectify this immediately! I've never felt the need to comment on an 'update' before but I feel strongly that you've taken something that was mine and replaced it with this rubbish. Give me back the app I paid for. As the saying goes: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Fantastique!. This dictionary is brilliant and leaves paper based dictionaries in the dust. This is what smartphones were made for! The search is powerful and smart and the phonetics are extremely helpful. I highly recommend it for anyone learning French it's saved me hours of hardship. Absolutely worth the price :)

An Excellent French - English App. Collins Pro French-English Translation Dictionary is a solid, responsive and comprehensive program. It works as described and is quite useful. You can search English or French words (and it has an autocomplete feature). It also makes useful suggestions if you mispell the word. The ability to touch any word in the dictionary and then either a) lookup the conjugation tables b) search the dictionary for it or c) google it is extremely useful. The app provides conjugation tables for many tenses. It's as easy as touching 'Tense' then selecting the tense you'd like. The numbers app is also very helpful - I imagine it would be excellent for beginners who need a quick converter. All in all this app is excellent.

Great!...but.. Great, as a student learning french having an update that includes things such as how to form and place sentences with forms such as indirect and direct object pronouns.

Superb. I am learning French and I use it every day. Far better than a print dictionary.

What's wrong with it?. I am among the ones who've been using these Ultralingua dictionaries for years. Apart from a few teething problems with the latest version (I had to delete and reinstall to fix a crash on startup), this app is still awesome and is better than ever. The conjugations work way better now, the interface is quicker and you can see everything on one screen if you want. The only learning curve is that you have to press the entry you want to see in the search results list to get more detail. Basically they've combined all the previous version's "modes" (numbers, dictionary, conjugations) and put the dictionary entries and the former search results list on the same screen. They've also combined the many dictionary apps into one "Ultralingua" app (you only have to pay once! read the instructions, it's easy). If you want to downgrade to the old version, look on your computer for the app name .ipa - the old version is normally there unless you've gone out of your way to remove it. Just drag the file onto iTunes and sync. In the meantime, the rest of us will be enjoying the slick and streamlined new update. Keep the updates coming! If you're wondering, I don't work for / I'm not affiliated with Ultralingua in any way shape or form. I'm just a fan who is surprised by the bad press.

infinite scrolling is perfect. The infinite scrolling is a feature that was in my wishing list and it is finally here. It works perfectly! My french keeps getting better and Ultralingua is part of it, thanks

Very timely rediscovery of this French Dictionary. Today I am going to French Calendonia and hope I will have lots of opportunities to practice my French. I didn’t learn much at school but did four years study at University. With this handy dictionary on my iPad it is so easy to refresh my memory with difficult words.

Night mode!. It needs night mode!

Terrible and annoying upgrade. I loved the original app and have used it every day for several years. It was easy to access and negotiate. Very straightforward and intuitive. This version too opaque, takes too much time to use and I dont find the usage I want easily. Gender of nouns must be at the very first level!! I am devastated by the upgrade. The previous version was everything I need and I absolutely would prefer to have it back. I have several other dictionary apps that are as bad as this upgrade so am now left with a set of poor and frustrating choices. Please given us the option of choosing the previous version that we have paid for asap.

update. this was a great app until the last update (during the last few days) this update was meant to fix crashes. i never had it crash until the update, now it crashes at least one per day (albeit with a lot of use). Also, as some rebiewers have said, it is missing some expressions etc but until the last update i loved it. now not so sure. if they fix the crashes and add expressions, prepositional phrases and conjunctions, it could end up the best dictionary app for french, c'mon guys go the extra mile , you are almost there!-

Where are the verbs translations. You need to be able to type in "to go" and below it it comes up "aller". Then you click on "aller" and it takes you to aller and its conjugation. A major flaw in a food app

Better than a dictionary!. Easy to use interface that allows you to quickly flick between English and French and back again at the touch of a button. Good definitions and listing of relevant phrases and terms. Better than a dictionary because it has a built in history of your searches. Worth the price and invaluable for students and travelers. Bonjour!

Bad upgrade. This was one of the best apps around until this recent 'upgrade'. If I had known how bad the new interface was going to be I wouldn't have updated the app. Refund please!

J adore mais.... I love this app...used it constantly during my year-long stay in France. Only wish it was updated more often with new words and phrases. Ce serait parfait si c était le cas! De toute façon 30$ très bien depensé! :)

Simply Amazing. This is the best French dictionary I've ever seen. Simple interface, simple transition between languages, phrasebook, and great conjugations interface. This is such a great jump from the previous updates. Well done guys, you deserve a pat on the back. Well worth the money!!!

UNWANTED Upgrade. What have Ultralingua done?? This is not an upgrade, it's virtually a different app!! This is not the app I married. This is not the app i paid for. I have had this app for 3-4 years, used it every single day and loved it, but now the look and feel is SO different. In my view, Ultralingua have no right to change something I have paid $35.00 for so drastically. Bad move. WE NEED OPTION TO REVERSE THE UPGRADE PLEASE.

Great App. This app has been enormously useful to me. I’m learning French and it is my primary resource. I notice on my iPhone usage stats that it is consistently my most used app. I really like the recent changes to enable filtering out of selected verb tenses. This is great because some are so rarely used or I haven’t learned them yet anyway.

Voice needed. Yes really needs a Speak option. I use ISpeak French to help but would be good to have it integrated. Please :)

Very nice. I was so impressed with your latest upgrade (2.3, German and Italian), that I bought this as well. The previous versions were always really good. The latest version has improved on that. I really like the way conjugating verbs has been integrated, and the way one can change tenses, yet remain in the context of the original word. The verb tables and font choice are also excellent. Well done.

Worth the high price. Very professional interface, which does just what you want and with as few keystrokes as possible. Recognising inflected forms is an absolute boon. It's as good as having a printed book (which, for many "read this" -style PDA applications, is really saying something.)

Handy but improvable. Have been using it for years, it’s very handy, but when you’re listening to music it cuts it off when you open the app, and also crashes a lot.

The content is great but this is the same as Ultralingua. Nice for you to sell this as two different Apps - its described differently but this Collins App is the same as the Ultralingua app. Same authors, same copyright. Different description but the same thing when you run it. Nice that I blew $35 on the same thing. Thanks guys! If you have one, don't buy the other. Pffft!

Excellent, would love audio pronunciations. As others have mentioned this is excellent, and much better than a print dictionary with its verb conjugation section. My only request is for some audio clips alongside each entry. I also use the Collins-Robert dictionary on my desktop computer (through Safari) that has audio pronunciations, so it'd be great if you (kind developers) could push them over into the iPhone app. Thanks, I use this every day.

Décevant. Des mots simples que l’on ne trouve pas, une traduction qui fonctionne dans un sens mais pas dans l’autre... bref, j’ai acheté ce dictionnaire sur la réputation de Robert et Collins. Je suis très déçu.

Where's the iPad version. Looks terrible on iPad, when is the update coming?

Ne vaux pas le prix. Je trouve qu’il manque beaucoup de choses

Misadvertised and buggy. Only has 45000 entries! Vs the unabridged Collins which should have over 800,000. This is bad app dressed up with a premium price. By comparison, the Collins pocket dictionary has 80,000 real entries, not just translations! Collin's should be ashamed of associating with this app. To top it all off, it's extremely crash prone and even has the honour of being the first app to cause a kernel panic on my iPad. Avoid like the plague, there are better and cheaper dictionary apps.

Better. Pros: -no need to select translation direction. Every bilingual dictionary needs this feature. -you can select which translations to copy -excellent quality translations Cons -there must be better uses for the sidebar. What a massive waste of space. -no highlighting feature. This would be great for languages such as English, which have so many possible meanings for so many words. -history and favorites should be accessible from the top bar. -no flashcards for reviewing -no audio -no paragraph translation feature (like Pons and Midori have) -no way to organize favorites into groups or export them. Other apps let you email them -no wildcard or example searches

De la fausse représentation !. Du bon marketing avec le nom Collins mais il y manque des mots aussi simples que "carob" / "caroube". Il faut trouver mieux. À ce prix-là, c'est du arnaquage.

One key improvement needed. Aside from being expensive, these Collins/Ultralingua products are reasonable purchases. They seem to be essentially the old Franklin electronic dictionaries ported to the Iphone. One could certainly have hoped for a more comprehensive dictionary after all these years, but no doubt some improvements have been made (even if they are not very clear to me). Anyway, the obvious missing functionality from my point of view is the ability to build up word lists for revision/vocabulary building (the Larousse boasts of such an improvement). It is a little hard to know why Ultralingua have not done this too. Overall they seem a somewhat lazy company, just milking an old franchise. Hopefully competition will rouse them sooner rather than later.

Dictionary French-English&English-French. Thank you so much for this essential tool when you read newspaper, magazine and books.

Ultralingua Collins Roberts. Vraiment très bien, le meilleur dictionnaire de traduction parmi la vingtaine que j'ai essayé

Of tremendous help for traveling. I already speak French having been an immersion student in the 1960's but my vocabulary is rusty after many decades of non-use. What I was looking for was an app that didn't assume that I was a beginner trying to learn the language. This app fits the bill with a solid word count, plenty of usage phrases and a smooth user interface on the iPad. I do wish it was possible to search beyond just the dictionary entries. For example, being able to search for two word phrases such as "wrong turn" in the usage entries would be of great value.

Collins updated 12 Oct 2011. Ok, but no more than just ok. Too Manu words are missing. Il manque trop de mots.

Latest update breaks the app. Was a great app until the last update. Now the horizontal and vertical are messed up, and the keyboard covers the search results. Fix this app.

Worth the $30. It is $30 but absolutely worth it. It works fast, you can switch between the languages with a little button at the top and it's easy to use. I also hate the idea of paying $30 for an app (I bought the Spanish and Portuguese ones too), but it'll be worth it to brush up on my languages on the go, or to translate things I don't quite know the meaning of. You can try the other cheaper apps, but I just went straight to the brand I trust the best, rather than wasting money on lower-end dictionaries. I hate wasting money.

Expensive...but worth it. $30 is expensive. Especially for an app. However, I found this app indispensable during my last trip throughout Europe. It works perfectly and has useful verb conjugations as well. I bought this one and the German one and they both came quite in handy. Even the locals were impressed by the examples. A paper dictionary might be cheaper, but not as handy as this one. The one thing you might consider is whether you need the iPad version or could settle for the iPhone version.

needs improvement. the suggestions box covers the title of the result you're looking for, as it aligns itself with the bottom of the search bar. fix it please.

Not enough entries. I keep looking up French words that are not in the dictionary. This makes the dictionary very unsatisfactory. I had had this problem using Ultralingua dictionaries on my Mac and would not have bought this had I known it was Ultralingua (I have used the Robert-Collins for decades and find it very good: here it is seriously abridged without telling you). When the entry is there, the dictionary is fine (hence two stars instead of one). If you are at all literary, this is not the dictionary for you.

Bring old interface back.. BRING BACK OLD INTERFACE - as option perhaps. OR FIVE NE MY MONEY BACK!! The new interface is not efficient.

Definitely need more words. Quite useful when words are found but it is annoying to have to often resort to go back to the web to find legitimate words and their definition.

Jek. Il devrait avoir des expression ausss

No iPhone 5 support yet!. Version 1.5.2 For the price of this app, iPhone 5 screen resolution should be supported by now. Version 1.2.5: The verb conjugator is nice, but it would be better if they could lay out all the tenses on a single scrollable screen (like Antidote Mobile) as that would make it more useful. As it stands, you have to know the name of the tense you need (plus-que-parfait, passé antétieur, etc.) or go through each tense until you've come to the one you know you want, but just didn't know the name for.

Collins-Roberts English French 21.00 app. This app sucks! A waste of money! No sound for pronunciation...a disappointment! I rate this purchase at zero...no stars....this comment wouldn't send without a star, so I am rating it with one star but I do not mean it, I really am rating it as ZERO stars.

Not very good. This dictionary is not worth 20$. A lot of word are missing and it is overall not working really well

Easy to Use and Very Helpful. I use it all the time for school and emails. It works great.

Trop basique pour mon besoin.. Trop de mots manquent. Je pensais avoir acheté un dictionnaire complet, mais non, je m'aperçois qu'il en existe une version plus complète à un prix plus élevé. C'est presque une arnaque, ça aurait dû être dit/offert au moment de l'achat. Bref, je suis déçue et n'ai pas envie de prendre le risque d'acheter l'autre et de ne pas trouver tous les mots dont j'ai besoin, encore.

Nice little dictionary for an astronomical price. Yes, it is an very nice little concise dictionary, but you can buy the Larousse English-French dictionary with many more words and audio pronunciation for $4.99. Considering the price of Larousse this dictonary should be selling for no more than $3.99.

By joe. Deez nuts😒

Very good. Pricy but it is worth it

Save your money. This app is not worth the money. This one may satisfy unilingual users, but bilingual users ( I'm thinking teachers) will find it below average - and, it does not feature predictive text as all of my other dictionaries do. Big drawback.

Decent, but probably not worth your money. This version compares pretty well to the abridged version of the Collins, but is a long ways from the unabridged version, whose price it more closely reflects. For those serious about French, the unabridged paper version is much better for your money, as is a cheap iPhone French-English dictionary. Also, an irritating bug makes it difficult to see any pronominal verbs, and although they informed me several months ago that this issue was to be rectified in a forthcoming version, there have been no changes. Altogether, it seems as if Ultralingua isn't going to update what is currently a mediocre, buggy dictionary.

Love the rewrite. Same level of great content, but looks much slicker now. Thanks for updating, not re-releasing!

Waste of money. It is claimed to be able to tap on in the browser but not working. Just waste of money!

love the app the cheap ones don't compare. Would be nice to add audio pronunciation.

Not satisfied.. I speak French fluently, but require help with unusual or technical words. Many of these words are not found, but are available on other sources. Good tool for beginners but not fir expert speakers or translators.

Great job! Great dictionary. Fantastic app rewrite.. This is the best iPhone and iPad French-English dictionary available. First, it is a solid bi-lingual dictionary. (The best dictionary was Harrap's, but that is no longer available on iOS. It's only available in hardcopy.) The rewrite of the app has taken some of the great features of the company's other Ultralingua app and applied them here. In particular, I really appreciate the ability to change the font size. Also, the app is pretty quick to find words. Great job!

Verb Conjugation. I highly recommend this app. It has been a lifesaver for learning French. But I would like to see a separate section included in the app for verb conjugation. Please don't sit idle, however, as there are words missing that need to be added to the dictionary.

Worth it. This dictionary is everything it says it is and more. Although the price might seem a bit high, buying any high quality dictionary is going to be a similar price. One very useful feature is the verb congugation. It is acurate and has ever tense of the verbs. Overall a great choice

Better than the real thing. While this is pricey for an iPhone app, it is definitely a good deal compared to a real dictionary. I don't regret the money I've spent on it. I've used this dictionary every day for the last month, in French class. I always beat classmates in looking up words, and so far it has only missed one word compared to the large classroom dictionary. It has all the pronunciation, word use and alternates you expect from a real dictionary, and is easy to read. Being able to quickly look up words or conjugations (and Google!) in the definitions themselves is also very handy. The verb conjugation tool is excellent, and completely replaces my Bescherelle. Changing tenses is very easy. The history list is very handy, particularly if you want to make up a vocabulary list later on. There is a number translation tool, but frankly I've never used it. The only bug I've found is when doing a search for a word. If you type in "rec" (in French » English), you'll get a long list of possible words, but you cannot select any of the last few words. You can force the table to scroll upwards to see them, but the table snaps back with the words out of sight when you release. The only workaround is to narrow your search. I don't often have a problem with this, though. Finally, one change I'd like to see is an option to erase the entry field automatically when you go back to look up a new word. Now it takes two steps before looking up a new word: go back to the search screen; erase last word. Not a big deal, but when you are looking up several words in a row, it gets annoying, and the erase button is rather small so I often miss it. There is a back-arrow at the bottom that could take you back to the previous word if need be. Overall, a great app that needs a few tweaks, and a lower price, to be fantastic.

Pas à jour. Il n’est pas à jour. Par exemple, je cherche le mot VAPOTER, il n’y est pas. Ce n’est qu’un exemple parmi d’autres.

Perfect since the new update. Thanks for fixing the bug quickly

Good. It's maybe not cheap, but it's good - I reckon it's worth the coin...very easy/fast to get to what you need, no internet required and generally easy on the eye. I've completely abandoned my paper French-English dictionary for this; I use it every day. Works fine on an iPhone, but with the bigger real estate of an iPad it's very nice to use. If you consider the 100's of hours you'll spend studying french, why would you want some pos toy app for $0.99?

Perfect. Yes, it's pricey, but this is a high-quality, comprehensive dictionary with a great interface. Quick, convenient, and portable. Perfect.

Love it. This App is one that I use everyday and during French Class. I highly recommend it, as it is worth every penny

An Inferior product. It does not work as advertised. Double tap on verbs do not show verb conjugation (iPad). Search produces a lot of clutter, the search becomes useless. I do not recommend this product.

Excellent resource. Well worth the cost. I'm now tackling more advanced novels in French since looking up words with this app is so easy. Nice to have all the verb conjugations so readily available as well.

Not working!. Whats happening with the new update? Doesn't work in iPhone 4!

Barbod dejami. Awesome I use it every day And guess what, it fantastically Guides me through and that's not all I love it where translations are also included in the conjugation section

To Apple: please improve app previews. As I watched this app being downloaded onto my iPhone I was uneasy. It's a lot of money for a phone app--yet I had no real confidence about what I was getting. Luckily it turned out great--I love it. My only suggestion is that a future version allow you to page-flip through tenses in the conjugator, instead of popping through a menu. A lot of times I think of a certain tense without consciously thinking of what it's called, and so the menu distracts me. I also share the earlier reviewers negative opinion about the opening splash screen. But again, great job, I'm glad I spent the money. But getting back to the avoidable risk I took in buying it in the first place (which is the very reason why I still have yet to buy an English dictionary app), I have this to say. I am very glad to pay when I get something great - I don't feel entitled to free quality like so many people out there these days. But guys---and I really mean Apple---you're normally a lot better about this. Give me more control so that I can connect my discriminating taste and my top dollar with the person out there who's doing the extra work to earn it. I am a bibliophile, and I'm not the only one either. Books are like the air that I breathe. I want clean air. The cleanest air possible. Put the book in my hands so I can leaf through its pages, sense its quality, know down deep whether it's the right one. Otherwise I can't go out and buy these things. I gotta stay safe and buy something cheaper. So here's my point--for the sake of expensive, high end, objets d'art, luxury apps, there should be much more (?) "previewability" in the App Store. To be honest I'm sick of the four or five screenshot + plaintext description + dicey public reviews combo. So please fix it, my two cents. Thanks. Merci.

Awesome. A bit expensive (relatively) but must-have French language dict!

Collins-Robert French-English Dictionary App. Excellent in giving lots of examples of usage. There are errors though, especially in the conjugations, so I keep my Larousse and my Bescherelle handy. However, the convenience of the app on a smartphone is unbeatable, so this Collins-Robert is my go-to.

Awesome App. Excellent and comprehensive dictionary. I like that it is offline too.

M. Moi. Il est carrément le meilleur dictionnaire électronique sans besoin de wifi.

Great flexibility. This is great and poetful. I even tried a verb and the translation automatically looked at the root verb and translated well

Excellent Resource. It's been an excellent resource for my French studies. My phone is always with me so it's always easy to look up new words especially when I cannot take my dictionary with me. A little pricey though and that's why I'm taking away 1 star from my rating

Valuable bi-lingual dictionary. Good first level bilingual dictionary. Accurate and thorough. Should be used in conjunction with Le Robert all French dictionary ASAP to grow your vocabulary exponentially. I'm speaking as a French teacher.

Excellent. Indispensable aid. It shows you your searched word and nearby words. It recognizes verbs not in the infinitive. Highlight any word and it will conjugate it for you.

Beau. Ça marche très magnifique pour moi qui étudie le français en debout.

Please add iPad and iOS support. Used Collins and ultralingua for a few years. Great dictionary. Great software. Please update it to universal app so I can use it on my iPad as well

Excellent. Excellent French-English dictionary. As a beginner student of French, I wish the dictionary provided IPA for the inflected forms of the verbs.

For beginners only. This dictionary has a very limited range of vocabulary. I would say it's adequate for intermediate learners at best. Even free apps and google translate have a wider range of words. Definitely not worth the exorbitant price.

Indispensable. Je l'utilise presque tout les jours. Il est très complet et est facile à utiliser. Recommandé pour toute personne vivant dans un pays anglo saxon.

Excellent usable dictionary. I'm really happy that this app has been updated for the iPad! I've been using it for the past month or two on my iPhone and it's quickly become essential for me while taking French class. Now on the iPad I'll look forward to being even more productive with it. Thank you. The dictionary is very complete, and the ability to look up verbs regardless of conjugation is absolutely essential and marvelous. Definitely a highly recommended app!

No updates. Also please implement the system wide back gesture.

A true French dictionary. This functions as a true French dictionary complete with IPA for all entries. As expected, multi-word expressions are hard to find, but it's great overall.

limited scrolling. Good dictionary with many usage examples. HOWEVER, limited scrolling, which is disappointing if you like to read dictionaries. e.g. : Enter the letters "ab" and you will get the first ten or so entries beginning with "ab". You cannot scroll further.

Great App. Very easy to navigate, clean and convenient interface. Waiting for update to fit the new iPhone 5 screen size!!

Not bad, not great. Works well for verb conjugations. Vocabulary is too limited. If you need a dictionary for the less-common words in French literature -- even modern literature -- this may not be it. For more common words, it's fine, but it doesn't compare with my old, heavy Collins Robert French Dictionary.

Update went smoothly. No problems, update fine, seems to work as before, and very helpful overall for the French student.

Please update is dictionary.. I am a college level French teacher and have been using this dictionary for about four months. This dictionary needs more definitions and to fix the "No Entries Found" for reflexive verbs that you do have. This app. was expensive. Please continue to improve it as a resource.

Excellent, bien conçu, un véritable outil. Excellentes définitions, exemples nombreux et pertinents, conception intelligente. Un véritable outil de travail ou de loisir, selon l’heure ou le texte à traduire.

Mostly accurate for Americain English.. I use this app almost daily and find it excellent except when British spelling and usage don't correspond to Americain English.

Poor dictionary. Bought this app because I own the paper version of Robert/Collins. This app is not even close to the paper version. Lots of words are missing, very few example sentences. Very disappointing.

Excellent application. Totally worth it.. I have purchased three of the ultralingua dictionaries. They are the best on the market. Keep it up!

Completely broken. The new iOS7 update makes all three of my Collins dictionaries crash immediately on launch. That's an investment of nearly $100 rendered completely useless. Fix this!

Excellent dictionary. The best out there!

Nice application, but too pricey. I bought this application. It is fairly nice to have the verb conjugation feature. However, it runs slowly on iphone 3G. Perhaps, it will be faster on 3Gs. Another thing, $24.99 is a bit pricey. Had I known another cheaper dicitonary, I would not have paid so much.

Best money I ever spent. An elegant marvel. I use it everyday. It has great illustrative phrases. Easy navigation.

What Happened. After the latest update which includes iPhone 5 support, I can no longer search for words in French or in English. When I touch the search bar, nothing happens. This is a great App, but this problem needs to be fixed ASAP!

Fantastic.. It is amazing. Very useful for students of French like me. Congrats Collins Congrats. Can't wait for future updates! Hope they come soon!

It's ok. I expected it to be better... ( with pics... Etc) but whatever

Worth its price. must to buy!

Great !. Great dictionary

Comprehensive. For a beginner it's great to quickly find the English version of words. Further, will find the French word from English. Verb conjugation a huge plus.

Magnifique. This is a great app for learning a language - much more than a dictionary. It's fun, smart, informative. Really a pleasure to use.

Qu'il est Bon!!. Very pleased. The functions are very helpful and it seems to have just about every unknown word that I come across. Expensive but extremely useful

This is a keeper. This has proven to bean extremely useful French-Englsh dictionary because, not only is the equivalent word in the opposite language displayed, several variations in usage and application of the word being researched are provided and the conjugations of verbs are accessible without having to move to a different section.Having used this for several years now, I have one picayune quibble, which is that the dictionary needs to be updated and expanded more frequently as when readin modern French books and magazines, I come across neologues and argot for which I then need to consult Larousse which does not provide the ancillary information on usage etc., that this one does. Definitely deserves five stars.

Not That Helpful. You have to enter the whole word, then search, instead of definitions coming up as you type. I couldn't find words in this dictionary that are in Ultralingua for $5 less.
