So good it should be built in. Dark Noise is so easy to use and such a good citizen of iOS that it makes you feel like the iPhone should *come with* a Noise app, and this should be it. A good noise app and a pair of headphones is the best defense against insanity, and I think Dark Noise is going to keep me sane for a long time. (Don’t worry, I already lodged a request for a starship engine noise 😉)

good and simple. I heard about this app in Mac Power user poscast. It is a simple to use app, the ready made sounds are a diverse and covers a lot of ground. And in the same time you can customize your own mix of sounds. During working from home, it's very useful for me to have the ambient sound of people, while keeping the benefit of no inturruptions. Add to that your prefered natural sound, and you get the nicest ambient environment. Using it on macOS is even more awesome because you can play it while you are listening to something else. The awesomest of awesome things is the fact that it works on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. I wonder if it can be modified can be modified to work on the watch too :)

Overall a nice app but its not without issues.. I’ve been using this app for about 2 months now and although I love the overall design of the app, there are a couple of frustrating issues I’ve been unable to resolve. First, I tried creating a Siri shortcut to start playing Brown Noise on my HomePod but Siri only responds that I need to continue on my iPhone. Second, the app will randomly stop on my HomePod, usually during the middle of the night causing me to wake up. I think its a great app but until these issues are resolved I’ll be looking for something else.

Absolutely fantastic. Only thing that could make this better would be even more sounds to play with! Maybe even add an option to add to your own imported sound?! Only recently bought this app and love it already — hoping to love it even more as it updates!

Great app & amazing interface. This app is amazing. The developer keeps adding more nosies. Maybe even eventually we’ll get noises you hear when in a boat on an lake/ocean. The interface is phenomenal and easy to use. I would highly recommend this app. And overall sound quality of almost all the noises is very good and you can not pick up when they repeat. At least I have not been able to except on the seagulls one.

Awesome App!. I like Apple’s ambient sounds, but Dark Noise has let me make a combination of sounds that remind me of my youth. Being able to combine, mix, and adjust individual sound volumes is way cool! We’ll worth the few dollars! Just wish they’d add a crack of lightning sound. The Thunderstorm and various rain sounds do not factor the crack of close lightning. Needed for my epic sleep symphony!

Solid App In Need Of Menu Bar Support. This is a great sound app & I've already purchased the lifetime upgrade. However, it's a bit annoying to have the app take up valuable dock real estate when it's open. An app like this would easily benefit from a "hide dock app" option and menu bar icon with a drop-down menu of quick actions, such as play noise.... I'm still using it, but this is something I've been looking forward to for a while, since others have also asked.

Best noise app I’ve found. I’ve been looking a sustainable, good looking, and quality noise app that supported Siri shortcuts. Only two things keep it from being 5 stars for me. I would love to be able to mix sounds. Crickets and campfire mmmm. Secondly, the ability to enable the timer in Shortcuts would be lovely. I want to set a bedtime shortcut to turn off certain lights, play brown noise, and fade out after a couple hours. That sort of thing.

Great design and sounds!. This is just the simple noise app I was looking for — easy to use, and a classic selection of sounds. I love the ability to set up a widget for easy access. The only feature I’d love to see in a future release is to have the noise automatically fade out when interrupted by an alarm or sound from another app. Thanks!

Janky volume. Great sound loops, but generally the app is too loud with my headphones one. There's an option to "Lower Volume" — it only works after enabling the setting in the preferences. If you later adjust the app's main volume bar, it "breaks" the setting and the sound is again too loud. Also, being new to the app, I wasn't aware there were 50 sounds because the UI is too minimal/unclear: The main window didn't look like it could scroll, and there was no indication that there were more sounds available.

This app is made with love. Long time user and I have to say this app is the best. The variety of white noises and other sounds keeps my other friends on their toes. The new green noise is amazing! My new favorite for sure Setting up shortcuts and automation with the action button is just the icing on the cake. The ability to play this under other audio is so helpful when studying or listening to long meetings that I really need to focus on. I could not be without it 🙌

“Airplane Noise” is comforting and doesn’t require a paid subscription. I like this sound more than Apple’s default background noises, and haven’t seen it available elsewhere. The pressurized sound inside and an airplane is an under appreciated stimulus I’ve come to realize. Kinda nostalgic. Good background sounds on a free app, and the straightforward user interface prevents me from overthinking the settings on an app I use to relax. This app is deserved of a Five count’em (5) star review from my pov.

Listen. (Get it!) Dark Noise is a sound investment.. Dad jokes aside, just think about this. Paying an inexpensive subscription price for a joyous app like Dark Noise is totally worth it if you want to stay focused for the entire year and block out external sounds and be aurally transported to bliss. Chapman cares so deeply about this app, and though I already bought the app on a one-time purchase, I will subscribe when the time comes. Kudos to Dark Noise, king of the soundscapes apps. Now - Apple Watch app? Here's to hoping :)

Great for old dogs. I have incredibly loud neighbors, both upstairs and downstairs and I have an old dog who basically suffers from PTSD. He’s a big dog and when he’s spoked by loud banging he literally climbs all over us. Putting this on the Brown Noise setting on my iPad and he’s happily under my desk when I work and can even sleep easier. It helps me zone in on work too. What a wonderful app. Thank you for making something so useful.

Best Sound Machine By Far. I've always wanted to have a sound machine that let me combine the different sounds together and this app does just that, and it does it so well. The selection of various sounds is pretty amazing too. Even my teenage daughter was impressed, though she did question what sort of sick developer would put a snoring sound as an option. Keep up the great work!

This app is perfect!. I’m a huge fan of using noises like these to concentrate at work or relax while reading. I have a playlist of thunderstorms that I normally listen to but this app has replaced that. I use it everyday and really enjoy the consistency. I’d love for more thunderstorm sounds and at a higher audio quality. Other than that I love it.

Helps My Insomnia!. I am a combat veteran with PTSD and have trouble falling asleep. I’ve tried a ton of things including prescribed medications that haven’t worked consistently or for very long. But the custom sound I’ve made in the premium version of this app lulls me to sleep in a Pavlovian way. And it helps keep me asleep. I’m so, so grateful for this app. Thank you Charlie Chapman.

I love Dark Noise!. I use Dark Noise everyday when I work and when I'm trying to relax or fall asleep. The mini player in the Mac app is a delightful addition. I miss the animated icons for the noises when I'm using the Mac app. I also wish there could be custom icons for the Mac app but I get that the implementation of custom icons on the Mac would be janky and thus likely not worth pursuing. I appreciate all the hard work you put into the app. Keep it up! It's awesome stuff!

Simply incredible.. Underwater and (now with update) Spaceship have helped me fall asleep consistently since Day 1 of downloading this app. I rarely sleep without it now. It’s also helped me wake up, since I become acutely aware the moment the timer stops the sound and my body naturally wakes up, miraculously 5 minutes before my alarm is set to ring. Unbelievable, especially as someone actively recovering from social media addiction (I previously suffered from anxiety driven largely by Facebook/IG, had a difficult time sleeping for more than a few hours, etc.) I am so grateful I found this app on Product Hunt.

So good, so easy to use across platforms. My wife and I both use this app extensively. Current favorite is a mix between spaceship and brown noise. This app is one of the best developed and supported app accross all mac and IOS platforms-- I wish more developers put as much time and care into their apps. Highly recommend. It's been so long since I bought it I don't even remember the price I paid, but it would be worth far more in value add to my work.

Good app, but. Good app, but I never had to pay for an app twice even when logged in with same Apple ID. Contacted company they just said the obvious “if you were logged in with the same Apple ID you shouldn’t have to pay twice. I had in on my iPhone wand wanted it on my iPad but the system didn’t detect I purchased it before. Plus most paid apps tell you within the app you paid for it or are a premium user.. no follow up from developer, sad with such a good app.

Solid Sleep Sounds. This works great. It's easy to use and plays quality sounds for 8 hours so that I can drown out external noises while I sleep. I love that it integrates with shortcuts on my iPhone so that I can tell Siri "It's Bedtime" to run my nightly sound. My only suggestion is to make the sound fade out slowly after the set amount of time; right now it just stops suddenly. Harsh way to wake up! lol

Great Premium Noise App. I really like the selection of sleep or relaxation sounds in this program a lot. If I need something to listen to, to be able to sleep or just to de-stress, Dark Noise, is what I inevitably choose almost every time. Also, I cannot thank the developer enough for offering this app as a premium program. The fact that Dark Noise doesn't contain any greedy micro-transactions or stupid subscriptions and is just sold for one fair price is the main reason I took a chance and purchased this application. I only buy premium programs and I'm very glad to add this one to my collection. I own more than a two handfuls of these types of noise applications and Dark Noise is easily among the best in my opinion. Thanks, again, for being a rad developer and selling Dark Noise ethically and morally as a premium program and God bless.

Amazing App. I love this app, if it ever gets the ability to blend sounds together like noizio it will completely replace that app for me but for now I like to mix it up and use both. The interface is clean and easy to use and the sounds are amazing. My only complaint is that the app doesn’t stay in the BG very well even just opening a few apps afterwards on my XR causes it to not want to resume the audio, even when opening the app and pressing play. Also if my phone is locked and I have to pause the audio it won’t resume until I unlock my phone and press play. But these are minor issues to me and I am super happy with it, keep up the awesome work!

This app woke me up. The way it mixes sounds together is awful and jarring. In addition the sound quality of said sounds is poor. I was drifting off the sleep after a few minutes and one of the sounds just changed so dramatically I woke up with a mini anxiety attack. It’s not a constant sound at all and that’s fine to a degree to make it realistic but after 5 minutes there shouldn’t be a DRAMATIC change in the sound that’s already poor quality. Odd though because I remember this app being great.

Sound quality is off. I agree with scampercom about the sound quality being off. The sounds sound thinned out. I use in-ear headphones (not Apple’s) to help blocked out co-workers when trying to concentrate. I usually listen to music but sometimes that can get tiresome and I prefer white noise. This app, though I really like the selection, probably wouldn’t help. The sound quality from other apps like Noisli and Noizio are better, with Wildfulness being the absolute best with 3D sound. I can mix sounds with Noisli but the app hasn’t been updated in a year or so and you can hear the looping. Noizio is updated, has more sounds than Noisli, but you can hear the looping and it requires so many in app purchases to expand the library. Wildfulness, Wildfulness 2, and it’s 3rd counterpart Sonas Island (or something like that) has beyond amazing sound quality. You can hear the looping with a few sounds but it’s biggest flaw for me is the lack of variety. It’s ALL nature sounds. There are other apps I have tried but most were unnecessarily complicated or not worth mentioning. This app is good for it’s simplicity, ease of use, features, and variety, but unfortunately not it’s sound quality.

CHEATED by the developers, reporting this to Apple. I paid for this app already. My family became dependent on it for sleep sound. Tonight, the app informed me that I am no longer a paying user, that I must now pay, AGAIN, every year, to continue using an app that I already bought. This is a violation of section 3.1.2(a) "Permissible uses" in Apple's App Store Review Guidelines: "If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for." I'm reporting this app to Apple. If you want more of my money then you need to make another app that I want to buy. You can't just charge me for the same app over and over after I already paid you for it.

Best unified app experience. Dark Noise has a gorgeous app on both iOS, iPadOS and macOS...don't think there's anything else out there that is so well designed and works across all platforms. Now that it has the ability to mix together several sounds into a unique mix (which you can save), it has everything you need from a white noise generator. This is the app that everyone else in the category should measure themselves against.

Best single purchase app for soundscapes. Ok, so I have had several different apps. I hate subscription services so I try and avoid anything that is based on that platform. However, I am a student and do require noise to drown out my wife watching TV, company that comes over, people in the library, etc... I am constantly listening to white noise or other things. However, this app has the ability to create your own soudscapes which I absolutely need. I don't want to listen to TV static for 5 straight hours so I like to layer the sounds so that it reduces my listening fatigue. This app is awesome! One suggestion (not a complaint) is that I would like to have different enviornmental sounds. Such as wind whistling (more like the sound you hear when you are in a cabbin / snow boarding) and one other one which would be some bineural frequencies a few Studying: BETA (14-30 Hz), High Beta (40 Hz) & Meditation/ Sleep: (4-8 Hz) or (432 Hz)

Well built, poor quality sounds. I downloaded this app from widget ad that showed this app as a sample. I instantly loved the UI and the capability to function with shortcuts. But the sound that works best for me(airplane interior) is apparently a very short audio loop with just enough pollution that it keeps me awake! I can hear a faint clicking noise that occurs every few seconds and for a neurodivergent mind, I fixated on the noise. I wish there was better quality audio sampling.

Pretty much Feature-Complete. Fantastic app: it does exactly one thing background noise and it does that one thing exceptionally. I would love to see (and purchase!) more sounds if they are ever added in the future. But as it exists, currently, incredibly worth the value. I use it almost daily!

This is the background noise app you are looking for. I've tried many of these apps, and they are all missing key features or lacking in terms of overall functionality. Dark Noise hits all the right notes, so to speak. It's lightweight and won't drain your battery, offers deep customizability, lets you combine sounds to create custom background noises, and most importantly, the sounds it has are top-notch. I listen to a customized Thunder/Rain/Crickets sound while I work and it's perfect. This app is more than worth the price.

Great sound and Responsive Developer. So this might get lost in the reviews but i wanted to review and rate this app ASAP. I've been a beta tester for this app for awhile now but had no reason to rate it until today. My dad has difficulty getting to sleep, and uses a white noise app on his phone. Tried to convince him to switch to Dark Noise a couple months ago but he wouldn't. When asked he said because of all the years he spent in the military, he fell in love with "rain on a tent" and he only found one app that did it. I submitted the feedback to have that sounds added right away. And now, the app has it thanks to the developer. And my dad is now full on using the app. Cheers to the dev, I wasn't sure if that sound would get added, yet here we are. 5/5 all around

Siri Shortcuts no longer work. Shortcuts stopped working a few weeks ago when my iPhone updated. When it worked, it was buggy. Sometimes just saying the phrase worked and sometimes Siri would say, “ready to play ...” but never started the requested sound. I contacted the developer and did not get a response. I dislike having to play it from my phone and hand off to my HomePod using airplay enough that I’m ready to stop using the app altogether.

Wanted to like it but iPhone version is buggy. The iPad version works great and does everything it’s supposed to do. The iPhone version however is basically broken. UI elements disappear (like the list of sounds vanishes and won’t come back until I force close the app), and it freezes when trying to a access the settings menu. I think the app shows promise but I needed both the iPad and iPhone version to work reliably, so unfortunately I had to request a refund.

Beta user during COVID. Special shout out and support to this dev. They allowed users to join their beta free of charge during the COVID-19 outbreak and still continues to do frequent updates all for free. I bought the app not for access but to support them and show my appreciation for a continuous level of support, a thank you and the app is great! Thanks dev for this now and in the future!

[Almost] all sounds are monaural. [2.0 update below] The app design is lovely, and the sounds are of a fine quality … except there aren’t any stereo sounds as far as I can tell. I’m a sounds app connoisseur (yes, that’s a thing), and of the six sound apps I use, even the free ones, this is the only one I have that has no stereo sounds. (Even the color noise sounds can be produced in stereo.) So the sounds will be fine if you’re far from the source, but if you’re close by they’ll sound a bit flat and less immersive. I’m hoping the “more to come!” promise means this may be addressed in the future. 2.0 update: this version introduces some new sounds, but after auditioning them I’ve found only two that are in stereo: Lake, and Ship Deck. For me, an app centered around monaural ambient sounds is like a camera app that can take only black and white photos. But YMMV.

The ideal noise app. Dark Noise is an app I have wished for for the entire existence of the iPhone, and I'm so glad it exists. My only complaint is that the wind chimes sample is way too short and repetitive; if that ever gets fixed, the app will be perfect for me. I'd also love a native watch app that works without the phone present.

By far, the best in the bg sound app as of Oct '22. The fact that it let's you COMBINE (i.e., mix) sounds to make the perfect one for yourself, has a minimal interface (i.e., all you care about is the sound, not an accompanying wallpaper or video) makes it great. The thing that makes it PERFECT (and why I gave it 5 stars), however, is the fact that it has a macOS widget 😍 (i.e., a quick start shortcut that shows up when you two-finger swipe to show the widget panel on the right side of the screen)--thank you for supporting what I think is one of the most underutilized macOS features! Maybe consider adding a screenshot of that in the App Store if you're not already?

Helps with Tinnitus!. I have Tinnitus and I have my favorite sound on all the time while I’m at home. I use to have a sound machine, but many years ago I found this app and I have used it every day since. My only complaint is if I have it on and I get a text or an alert on my phone, it changes my sound or turns it down real low about 5 seconds after the alert. I have to unlock my phone, go to the app, and turn the volume back up or switch it back to my preferred sound. I can’t turn it up with just the volume button. Imagine my frustration when I’m group texting!! EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Awesome. This is a perfect, simple app that follows the philosophy of doing one thing, and one thing well. I appreciate the unified experience across the Apple ecosystem. Thank you for not collecting data - if you did, I wouldn't use it. Thank you for your humor - unamed goose mode xD. The one thing, on OSX, is the volume is super loud, which you acknowledge via the Labs section - and the 'Lower Volume' setting works perfectly - but I am curious why not change the range on the volume control?

Well designed. I have been using this app for hours every day, mostly because it has Shortcuts functionality. That feature alone makes it more useful than other noise apps. The drawback for me is the sound library. As a person with tinnitus, some days I need different blends of sounds, and rain is best for this, but there aren’t enough rain choices for me. I wish that it had EQ sliders or the ability to import other sounds. Still, it’s a great app!

This is awesome on so many levels. I beta tested this app (because in a nerd and like testing things). I purchased this as soon as it was in the store; because it’s awesome! It uses so many of the more modern features of iOS. But the sounds are fantastic! I have no idea how they got them so realistic without sounding repetitive. One word of warning: goose mode 😉

Great app, but needs improved audio quality. I’ve been very pleased with Dark Noise. Really helpful for sleep inducing ambient sound. The variety is solid. Good design. I especially like the ability to create custom sounds by combining the stock sounds and adjust their individual volume to make a highly customized mix. It even synchronizes my custom mixes and settings through iCloud to the other devices, including the macOS version. I would rate it five stars, but the audio samples need to be stereo or surround sound to really deliver realistic ambience.

Scam. Always Trying to Rip Me Off.. I like the app. The problem is that the app conveniently forgets quite often that you already have an active subscription. The app then locks you out of the premium features, because it wants you to spend money to sign you up for a more expensive subscription. Therefore, I have stopped using the app and canceled my subscription. I refuse to use any app that has a primary focus of using me to make money. Really sad that such a great app has as a primary focus scamming subscribers out of their money. If I could give the app no stars I would. I mean what is the point of paying a subscription to have access to premium features when the app will the next day conveniently forget that you have an active subscription and want you to sign up for an even more expensive subscription.

Best ambient noise app. I’ve probably been through a dozen noisemaking apps over the years and this one is by far the most polished and enjoyable. Every little things sets it above the competition. My favorite thing (that has nothing to do with the excellent sounds) is the subtle little animations. It just shows the developer cares about the small things.

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨. This app desperately needs Binaural sounds please add it makes so much sense to add them to this app The sound never changes on Binaural Beats so that makes it easy to loop and they can be very short file won’t take up much space on our devices But please no popping sounds on loops it’s extremely distracting and annoying

Sublime. Beyond the magnificent user interface, there are exquisitely curated sounds. That’s simply what Dark Noise is all about. It is extraordinary. And then (this is key) the dev of Dark Noise is responsive. An email query about an issue gets addressed rapidly; counts for a lot in my book. Things happen and not always within the control of the developer. Always prefer to check-in with the dev directly before posting an issue or question here.

Flawless.. Dark Noise is not just the best white noise app I’ve ever found, but one of the best APPS I’ve ever found—period. The amount of sounds to choose from, the range of style customization, and the smoothness/creativity of each animation make this app so much fun to use. You can tell each element was considered carefully. I highly recommend checking this one out.

Beautiful design but disappointing sound. This app is gorgeous and thoughtfully designed with excellent widgets and Shortcuts integration, and the variety of sounds is impressive (5 stars). However, the quality of the majority of sounds is frankly just average, which is disappointing, considering that sound is the app's entire purpose (3 stars). Most of the sounds are thin and practically monophonic, with only a couple providing any sense of depth and spatiality at all ("Lake" and "Ship Deck," for example, are excellent and convincingly immersive), and volume levels vary wildly across sounds (at 50% volume, "Heavy Rain" is finally audible, while "Cat Purring" is deafening). I hope the developer will make sound quality improvement a priority for future updates. Until then, I'll return to the similar apps in my library that offer superior recordings with exemplary stereo presence.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. This is the best noise app I’ve ever used. I particularly appreciate that it runs in Slide Over on the iPad - immensely useful when working on the iPad!

Nice selection of noises. crystal clarity with the sounds included in this app. The rain variations are spot on and are really good for night time listening as is with the fireplace/campfire ones. The keyboard one is good for listening in places that are a bit busier. Overall a good selection and is a good alternative if I get sick of listening to music but still want sound in the back of my head.

Great App!!. Very useful, wouldn't be able to study at home without it

A scam. This app looks like it will let you create noises, and mix cool sounds. Its only 50 noises and the only thing you can do with them is put play and listen the noises. All thar for $15. i feel robbed

Perfect for reading. I'm an academic and have always read with white noise. This app does that and way more. Who knew I also liked reading with "rain on tent" and "campfire" noises?

too expensive. Requires subscription of $30 per year for anything other than white noise and rain.

Perfect for blocking out distractions. This app is perfect for setting background noise for either focussed work or to relax. Use this in the office or at home to concentrate. Highly recommend, and the developer goes above and beyond to add small touches which make using the app intuitive and easy. 10/10.

Keeps asking for a review. Very annoying and disruptive. Makes using App difficult. There should be a way of stopping this very annoying behaviour.

Not worth it honestly. I thought it looked pre g and I was willing to pay $6 for it but in the end I don’t reckon it’s worth what you pay, the sounds have little bass and are quite overpowering making it hard to find relaxing. It’s still a good idea and has a nice variation of sounds but nothing special.

New feature requests!. Some soft piano loops would be great as well as a mixer! Otherwise incredible app :)

Good albeit limited. I have a tough time focusing and this app paired with a set of noise cancelling headphones does help quell external distractions. The caveat being that only a few noises included truly resonate with me. YMMV in terms of how useful the provided library is.

Perfect. If you are after an app for ambient noise stop searching, Dark Noise is what you are looking for. The presets are great and being able to build your own is also really useful.

New study buddy. I struggle to stay on task studying! Instead of getting distracted by my phone every 5 seconds.. my person favourite "distant thunder" keeps me in the zone! Great help

New pricing is ridiculous. I would be happy to pay for lifetime but it would have to be much cheaper. Currently looking for an alternative to this once simply beautiful app.

Any normal fan music. I want normal fan music

Perfect for Study!!. no complaints, this is an amazing app that i've had for a while and just downloaded onto my new mac. its so good at distributing the sound evenly for a nice experience. i play it in the background when reading and/or studying !! def recommend - from a gen z

Great App. I work in a workplace that doesn’t respect the concentration required for development and coding. This app manages to knock out the general laughter and irritations of the work place. I highly recommend this app if you need to be able to focus on a task.

Good, but too expensive for Pro tier. I do like the app and the long fade sleep timer, however the price is far too high for what’s being offered. Lucky there’s a free tier. But lifetime access was far cheaper before they changed to a subscription model. I wish I found this app earlier, and would purchase the lifetime access if the price is lowered.

This is the one. If you’re looking for a rain/white noise app, this is it. Great clarity and sound quality, great interface, great user experience. Nice work, Charlie.

EXPENSIVE. It’s ok, lots of options, but it’s now incredibly expensive. Many other apps out there basically doing the same thing. For what it is, it’s hugely over priced at $80 for one time payment and $30 annually.

Fantastic. Almost every feature you could want, and it's the best kind of iOS citizen. Supports Siri, Shortcuts, widgets, system dark mode, everything. Dark Noise is the kind of app that does one thing, really well. Completely worth the price of a latte.

Almost perfect.... Great interface, great sounds. But no playing multiple sounds at once/mixing of sounds? Why not?

What the hell. I bought this app and now I have to subscribe.

Disappointed. I was really hoping to like this app. However, I was instantly let down by the audio quality of the recordings. First off, the audio sounds very heavily compressed. In some of the louder sounds like Thunderstorm or River, you can hear the artifacts that you only get in a low bit rate audio file. It’s incredibly distracting and unpleasant. Next, the recordings have a ton of noise which should have been filtered out. In the Crickets sound, there is a ton of noise in the lower frequency range. It’s so loud that it almost drowns out the actual sounds of the crickets. Finally, the recordings are just difficult to mix. This is partly due to the previous point of unwanted noise filling out the frequency spectrum. If I want to mix Windy Trees with Crickets, it becomes a muddy mess. The lower register noise from the Crickets competes with the low wind from the trees. The upper mids of the crickets is overpowered by unwanted white noise from the trees. I do enjoy the functionality and design of the app, but I would not recommend this to anyone that values high fidelity and properly mixed audio.

Super effective and the free version is enough for me. Love everything about this app, only problem is I don’t have a reason to pay because the free options are sufficient. My favorite is airplane interior. If you add the free ones to your favorites, then use the favorites menu, you can even get rid of the annoyance of seeing the paid options. Thanks for the great app! Hope those who need more will pay for it!

I bought this app. Now I have to pay again for life subscription?. As others have mentioned… you can get much better quality audio from Apple Music. They should have offered a lifetime to current customers who bought the app already… perhaps a discount like other developers have done to show value in their current customers 👎🏼

Must own App. Purchased this app a few years ago and I use it almost every day... I have severe tinnitus and the constant ringing in my ears can drive me crazy some days.... Thankfully this app helps me drown out the noise when I'm in a really quiet environment. I've tried a bumch of white noise apps and this one is by far my favourite. I purchased this app before the subnscription model was introduced so I can't reveiw that aspect of the app, but I'd glady pay $2/month for some peace of mind

This app is incredible. I have searched everywhere for an app like this! I bought this and was immediately pleased with the simplicity of the main interface, and the organization of the sounds. Oh, the sounds. These are some of the best noises I’ve ever heard, and they play in the background, and with the phone closed.Immensely helpful to someone like me, who doesn’t like to keep video running. I strongly urge anyone who hasn’t downloaded this or is considering downloading this to get it! It’s great and definitely has my support! ❤️

Surprised. I did not expect to like it or use it as much as I do. Thank you for a really lovely app.

Perfect in its simplicity. Such a simple concept for an app, a collection of ambient sounds for different uses, yet no other app does it so neatly, elegantly, or reliably. The sounds are clear and uninterrupted, the theme and app icon options are super fun (Relay FM listeners will love all the different themed icons), and everything just works. One of the most “Apple” apps developed by a third party.

Just simple and awesome. Love the app. Great way to get into a focused state and block out noisy distractions. I would like it if the quality of the sounds were a bit higher to make it more immersive but the automation, blending capabilities and general design outweigh the sound quality concerns.

Amazing. Flawless! Absolutely recommended

Shortcut integration. Next level background shortcuts, bravo!

best in class. there’s always been a slew of “white noise” apps. And they’re mostly crap. the bar for Dark Noise was not high, but it’s just so, so good. you can tell the developers who care and the ones who don’t. this dev cares.

Wow. Was listening about them for long time and thought nothing new in some noise app but wow this review comes within minutes of downloading app as merging other app sound with noise in this app is killer feature.

Disappointed by the sound library. Definitely a quality app, but I was expecting more variety in the sounds being offered. I will never listen to a microwave or a vacuum running. I was expecting more nature sounds etc. Too many man made categories with sounds I’ll lever listen to.

Sounds too compressed... I bought this thinking I’d be hearing some quality white noise especially for the premium price… but ….Sounds toooo compressed… especially now that you can find lossless white noise on Apple Music. Just takes some searching.. I’m a bit disappointed that they’re charging at such a premium. Only pro is that the white noise choices are all neatly organized but I can’t even set it as a scene. But at least has Siri support.

Sounds. Great selections

Great app, awesome sounds, pay once!. Thank you for the great app!

Love this app!. I use this constantly. It is incredibly good and helps with both focus and sleep.

Bring back the 2.9 icons plz. The icons in 3.0 look like pre-iOS7 icons.. I use this app religiously, but it’s messing up the good thing I had going on my home screen. Keep the features, but please for the love of god bring back the pre-3.0 icons. At least fix the neon one for you old pal Cam

Great app!. Very pleased with the simplicity of the app and all the sounds provided!

Invaluable with a newborn in the house. 👶👍

Thank you!. I just love this app. The design is great, and I really enjoy the ability to mix my own custom "dark noises". It allows me to have background noise to focus on my tasks at hand. It is worth every penny!

Best noise app I’ve ever tried!!!. I have previously tried many noise apps before dark noise and all of them where simply dreadful. But this app is well made and simple. Plus the developer clearly listens to a lot of the same podcasts I do haha

Loving this. This app is absolutely amazing! I love having some kind of background noise when I’m working but find audiobooks, podcasts, and even music can be too distracting. It’s nice having an assortment of sounds on phone, ready to go.

I love the spaceship engine noise. Sometimes when I have to get a lot of work done I turn on the Spaceship Engine and play it thru the HomePods. It is just like being on a spaceship and sometimes under high velocity it rattles in exactly the way you would expect. It is totally awesome and I love it.

Good, Except Bait-n-Switch. I bought this app with no indication of having to re-up for continued use of all sounds. The only couple of noises I really care about are thankfully still there in basic mode, but I'm docking two full stars for the misrepresentation/underhandedness.

Killer app for focused work…anywhere. With “Mix Audio” on (under Dark Labs in the app’s setting), I run the Coffee Shop noise while playing some background music (Corelli’s Concerto Grosso or one of Stafford Bawler’s game soundtracks) on noise cancelling headphones. Instant concentration during my train commute or in a shared office. Great app! (Thanks to the Cortex podcast for the plug!)

Great App!!! One useful feature missing. Very well crafted app. One nice feature would be to have a few different 60 beats per second sounds like a ticking clock and so on. They could be used to construct sounds that were useful for Pomodoro timers.

Make your own sleep sounds!. Being able to tailor and make your own sleep sounds in this app is the most amazing feature ever. I love it

A Top 10 App. Like sleep in a bottle. I have used this app both for relaxation before bed, and for finding the “zone” while working from home. This app distinguishes itself from all my other white noise apps (I know, I’m weird.) with personalization, a variety of mesmerizing sounds, and an overall feel that is one of a kind.

Outstanding attention to detail. It’s exactly what you’re looking for if you’re looking for a noise app with that quality indie craftsmanship you just can’t get from a big company app

Simple, straight to the point. Great app, great price point, does what I need it to do without a lot of work, tweaking settings, or menu diving. Since it is easier than ever before, please make iPad, iPod, Apple Watch, and Mac compatible companion apps for Dark Noise as well! I’d buy it.

Best sound program I’ve found.. Easy to use. Nice widget to quickly access sounds. Large selection of sounds. And even iOS shortcuts to create some nice scene capabilities. All around just awesome.

Great UI!. Love this app because I can no longer sleep without noise, and when I am on the road this app works perfectly. The UI is as easy as it gets. And the variety of sounds is great. Excited to see what new features come in the future.

Best sleep sounds without crazy subscriptions. This is the one you're looking for. Good sounds, good features - without finding out it's actually 10 bucks a month.

It good. The only thing I hate is that you don’t get to play all the sounds unless you have premium, but other then that it overall is a great app and can be used anywhere or anytime of day. Also it has a setting where you can set a timer for it to stop playing.

Helped me get to sleep!. This app really has helped me get better sleep. I am a thinker before I go to bed and being able to turn on this app and just go right to bed is amazing. My favorite is the spaceship engine.

An essential app. Dark Noise is one of my most valued apps on my phone because it helps me focus and center myself, especially helpful during a very difficult year!

Nice selection and mixing. I like the different noises to choose from. Mixing them, and saving them is the best part and allows for quick selection based on your mood. Thank to this developer for a fun and useful app, and for putting in a touch of his own personality (goose mode!)

The Loops Are Too Short. I think this is a great app and I use it for work all the time. The main issue I have is I can hear the loops with every sound I like, which is kind of distracting to me. I wish the recordings they made were a lot longer.

Best sleep sounds app ever!. I was looking for a perfect white noise / sleep sounds app to use across my iOS / MacOS devices which was also scriptable with Shortcuts, and I found Dark Noise. Absolutely perfect: simple, clean design, scriptable, and great sounds. Highly recommended to all!

Pretty Much Everything. All the sounds you want and More!!! My wife and I used Apple Music until I found this App, but the tracks always fade out. With this, there is no gap between your white noise, just ONE LOOP! Couldn't have asked for a better app.

A wide variety of sounds. There are many different white noise sounds that you can play, even if other apps are running. Has a timer and color options as well. Great app. My only issue is that cannot combine sounds. That would be great!

Love this app. Great for boredom too besides sleep, studying and concentration hehe Hope to hear more sounds (but not entirely like sound effects) in the next update like hums, winds, moans, Musical instruments, Ambient Lofi quality of record pops or a messy tape looping. something else that’s kinda underrated but not thought of and interesting to be honest

Needs more sounds. I like this app, it’s a great app and I just love the design, but it definite needs more sounds like rain tubes, (those tubes full of beans that you turn upside down to make a noise), and I have recently had a problem where sound shuts of after about one or two minutes occasionally

Great app, quality of recordings could be improved.. First, this app is a great example on how to stay simple and fit well with the ecosystem. The UI is excellent, and it is super easy to use. 👏👏👏 Bravo That said, I feel like the recording of some of the sounds are a bit sub par. I saw on reddit that you wanted to keep the download size small, and I totally agree, but it would be nice to have an in app option to fetch higher quality recordings. Side note: some of the sounds would pop a bit better with dummy head recording, have you looked into this?

Awesome sound app. On the surface, it’s an absolute ball to play with and use. Dig a little deeper and quality touches stick out (sound that doesn’t loop noticeably), the icon animations for each sound. Awesome. It’s been so long since I just had fun with a non game app...till Dark Noise. Can’t go on though, have to get back to playing with this app...

High Quality App. I’ve used a number of sound-machine style apps for help sleeping while traveling. This is far and away the best. The quality of the sounds and the attention to detail in the interface adds up to be a great experience. It’s the only sound machine app I’ve found worth having.

I use it everday and all night!. I love this app. High quality sounds. Excellent selection. Syncing across devices. App stability. Beautiful UI. The only thing I could think to add is ambient noise. Keep up the good work.

The best sound app. Simple, clean UI with a great variety of sounds. Widgets and shortcuts integrations are also A+. To top it off, you’re supporting an indie developer who respects your data privacy. Would recommend this app to anyone looking for sounds for focus or sleep.

Definitely a work of passion. I can tell a lot of effort went into this app and it wasn’t just completed as quickly as possible. The animations make it feel fluid and responsive. In essence this app is a very simple concept that doesn’t require all the fancy artwork for it to accomplish its purpose. But it completes the experience. Well done!

Favorite Background Utility. Charlie, you provide an incredible service to us users. This utility not only helps with its simple function, but it influences both my mental and physical health by easing anxiety and sleep equally. Thank you

Really Fun Sound App. Great for relaxing your mind or pets. I find myself using a lot. Creating mixes is endless fun. You might become somewhat of an amateur sound engineer. I highly recommend for ambience art/sound.

This app is the best!. It always works. It does what it is supposed to do. It has many different sounds (I like brown noise or the beach). It is great for working on the train or focusing at home when you need to block out outside noise. It just plain works! Get it now!

Love it!. Airplane interior is my favorite sound to fall asleep to. For some reason that sounds better than actual white noise. I love the variety of sounds and the app developer clearly loves and cares about this app. Looking forward to future updates and ones that will hopefully include sound mixing. :)

Love the app... Possible battery issue. I’d like to say that this is a very well-designed app. Love the look, feel, and sound options. Last night was the first night I used it all night. I had Space Engine running for about 5 hours on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Screen was off. Battery went from around 90% to 9% in five hours of running. Is this normal?

"Remastered" sounds are distracting. The airline sound is still messed up. The volume lowers when it loops. For an app that only has one purpose - prevent distractions - it actually creates distractions. Really more work is needed and more care. There are some analytics that seem to run in the background without telling us... there is a setting buried in the preferences to disable... not cool. Otherwise, the app works ok and UI is good.

Exactly what I needed. Has all the features I wanted, and I hope that the feature for background play behind music is integrated full soon.

Digital blip noise in airplane sound. This app is great with the exception being the airplane sound. There is a digital blip when it loops which is very distracting and some other odd sounds in the clip. I hope they fix this though it’s been an issue for a very long time. Space engine is more what it should sound like.

Indispensable. I rely on a white noise generator as a coping mechanism for misophonia, and this app is such a joy to use that it helps reduce anxiety even more in those situations. There are so many clever design considerations, like a layout for one-handed use, special care to mask when a sound loops, an overall app size that’s a fraction of competitor apps, and more. Thank you Charlie!

Subscription Insanity. Original buyer before the subscription. Everything is a subscription now why not have one for a noise generator? Love the app, very much dislike the new subscription model. Even more interesting is the fact that the app acknowledges I was an original buyer but tried to get me to subscribe anyways. I swear it's impossible to find a product these days that doesn't eventually try to hook up a perpetual siphon to my wallet.

Simple yet powerful. This app is simple yet provides everything you could ever need from a white noise app. It is clean, has many diverse sounds and absolutely mesmerizing icon animations to watch while you listen. My personal favorite is the spaceship.

Add stereo/sound mixing and it would be perfect. Great app, fantastic design. Only things missing are stereo audio — all of the sounds seem to be in mono only — and adding the ability to mix different sounds together. With those two things it would be perfect.

Don't like the new remastered Rain sound. Used to love Dark Noise and have bee using the Rain sound every night for the past 2 years. The new remastered Rain sound is too load and harsh. Don't like it at all. Will need to look for an alternative. Not sure why something that wasn't broken was "fixed".

Great for sleeping. I use this app in a Siri Shortcuts goodnight routine to turn off all the lights, make sure garage is closed, set DND on phone and play some “noise” output to a HomePod when going to bed. Great app out the door and getting better. Dev is really responsive too. (Maybe in future, open a store in app to get more sounds!)

Great interface. Dark Noise does a great job of staying out of your way, making it easy to start and stop your background noise. But when you want to dig in and customize, it’s powerful. Highly recommended.

You won’t be disappointed. This app is so good, I am shocked the developer didn’t charge for the upgrade by deploying as a new app. Version 3 should deploy as a new app and charge again. It worth paying for...

Simple reliable app, no ads, does what it says on the tin. This is my default noise making app. There are a million of them, I like this one because it is simple, ad free and i can trigger it and hit play with two clicks where it remembers my previous settings.

Delightful. I only use an ambient noise app occasionally, but Dark Noise is one of those apps that's so well conceived and designed, with such a delightful sensibility, that I have a feeling I'll be dipping into it again and again just for kicks. Support indie developers, especially this one. You'll be glad you spent the four bucks.

Beautiful design. Dark Noise has all the features you would expect in a noise app, plus some things you might not expect (like Siri shortcuts). Best of all, the interface is gorgeous, customizable, and fun. Overall am amazing app.

Jocb. Jocb and the rest are the best players on this list for sure and I don’t know what else you want me for you 🎂🇲🇾💰🎂🎂🌍🌏🌍 but you are a great person to work for you I am very happy to be part for your yyoung family I love your company you have been an inspiration and I I
