Slow Down and Have Fun. If you're looking for an app with excessive filters and "cutesy" overlays, this isn't it. However, if you'd like to get a hint of how it felt to shoot analogue and develop in a darkroom, this app is a fun exercise. Like film and darkroom processing, Darkr forces you to slow down and consider your photographic choices and actions. It's not a go-to, grab-a-shot-on-the-fly camera app. But it IS a way to expand your photographic thinking. And I love the medium and large format options--and Darkr's execution of them!

This has brought me back to the fundamentals. I’ve been using Darkr for a couple of years and from the beginning loved how it takes me back to when Inused to shoot with film and my old 4x5 rail camera. Certainly it has some limitations I suspect because of the limitations of the lens on a phone but I have on occasion been able to capture some pretty amazing images if I do say so myself. There is a problem as of today (Dec 15, 2019). There is a bug in the most recent update that causes it to crash right after pressing the shutter release. And it does not keep the photo after the crash as well. Hope you can find the bug soon. Love using your app.

Good but buggy. The viewfinder lags, and it crashes often while editing, leading to lots of frustration and lost time. Until that’s fixed there’s pretty much to reason to use this not even knowing if my progress is going to be saved. I just bought the full version too 🤷🏽‍♂️

If I could give it 10 stars.... If you’ve ever used large or medium format cameras and a real darkroom, you’ll love this app and the level of creative scope it gives you with just the few filter and camera options. Seems like there isn’t much here, but it does a whole lot that no other camera app will do. This app is one to add to the collection that is different from the pack.

Best camera app ever!!. Every picture I have taken with this app has been amazing. The results are beautiful. Very unique.

Excellent app - Feature request. Two things would make this app amazing. -the ability to control how color photos are converted to BW. Like you’d use a red or green filter with a color negative. -the ability to control the transparency of the cut and patch mask Tools.

my new favorite iphone photo editor!!!!. This app is seriously the best iPhone photo editing app I have come across so far. I shoot medium format film and this really is a great fun tool for the iPhone and my iPhonography. I can't speak highly enough about this app. Favorite so far for iPhone work!!!

Remarkable. I am a large and medium format photographer, best known for my portraiture. This is a super enjoyable app and a great way of using the iPhone camera. Among the highlights, my favorite is that the large format camera is just as fidgety as the real thing and demands a focus on composition in the same way. The film choices, dodging, burning, blurring, filtering and other options yield great photos. And you have to have a good eye, this is for people who understand, or are willing to learn, that artistry is proportional to effort. I will be eager to see how it develops over time.

As close to Manual mode as you can get!. This app is wonderful. It’s not a point & shoot process with tons of the same old filters. It’s a process of taking your time, framing your shot, and creating the image. Mocking dark room techniques, you can create beautiful black & white photographs from your phone.

Seems Good, But Repeatedly Demands Reviews. I’ve been playing with this app for 20-30 minutes total, and it has asked me for a review 3 times already. I’m leaving this just to make it stop, and I won’t reward their annoying intrusions with anything positive. Truth is I haven’t had enough time to form a decent opinion.

Great app but my god. Can we please fix this crashing problem I work for a long time on photos and almost always this thing closes on me before I can save my project and have to start over. PLEASE I paid for this app for a reason not to not be able to use it.

Interesting, but dodge and burn have issues. I love that this app really does bring us back into the darkroom. However, when doing detailed work with dodge and burn, every time I use two fingers to enlarge the image, the mask disappears. Hope it’s fixed in the next upgrade!

Amazing. This app is great. It allows for such fine control over black and white photos, and the interface is super cool and easy to use.

LOVE. I’ve wanted an app like this for a very long time. I stumbled upon this browsing the App Store and downloaded it instantly. It takes some getting use to but it’s worth trying. I really appreciate the tutorials. It has been a long time since I’ve been in a darkroom. For me, using Darkr is like traveling back in time to what helped me fall in love with photography, the darkroom. Thank you for this. I can’t wait to see what it develops into. Just don’t go away! lol

Incredible pro camera app!. Awesome app with plenty of control over your image. Small learning curve if you don’t understand the darkroom process but it has tutorials that are simple to follow. Master the Darkr app and you will create some jaw-dropping photography.

It’s ok. Not a bad app. Sometimes would have problems with burn/dodge feature with more detailed “negatives.” Other than that and not being able to save progress for later, it’s pretty ok.

Darkr. Amazing for editing and creating black and white photos. Complete, user friendly control of features like crop, burn, dodge, and blur.

Great editor, somewhat misleading. Perhaps I just misread the description or I was being stupid but I thought this app could scan my actual negatives and edit them. I will no longer have access to a dark room and was excited to see an app that could help me “develop” my remaining negatives. ((Wouldn’t that be amazing? Bypassing the whole printing process then scanning and editing the photos on/to a computer THEN saving them to the cloud to post on Instagram and other platforms?!)) Anyways, it’s a good app and I recommend it for pristine black and white photography. I however will probably not use it - I’m too let down to use this at the moment.

Great darkroom simulation. If you’ve made your own darkroom prints you’ll find this to be a really fun app to use. I hope the developer will add some stuff like different medium format aspect ratios, a 6x6/6x7 switch would be nice, and split toning.

Seriously. Come on we are in 2019, why digitally simulate a darkroom workflow when you have really great photo editing apps for iOS out there already. Digital is not a negative going to a paper and shouldn’t be treated as such as it just makes the digital workflow way slower and a bigger hassle. If you’re interested in Darkroom techniques it’s not that expensive to buy an enlarger and the trays plus liquid. And if you do black and white it’s really easy to also develop the film yourself. Digital is digital.

Darkr. I’m finding this app refreshing. It is beautifully done in B&W and brings the reader into the timeless darkroom. Tying today’s digital photography to the timeless darkroom and does in in B&W. I just started using this app. I think it’s a very unique app in the way it approaches some of the basic and important rules of photography. I have only browsed the other topics so I can’t yet give my opinion. If the app allows, I will give my review of the remaining topics as I finish them. I can’t put this app away:)

Love. This is a fantastic app. I’m a photog, yet I don’t have a camera and this app allows me to create photos that feel like I spent hours editing and printing them.

Freezes and crashes. I haven’t used this app in a while, but used to really enjoy it. I came back to it today only to find it freezing and becomes unresponsive often when trying to select a photo from my camera roll.

Joy. This app is a joy to use especially if you are using or have used a large format camera.

There are better less complicated apps out there. I was hoping for some great editing app but it takes to long to learn and the pay off for me wasn’t worth it. Example I could not get the pocket camera to shoot, no matter what I did. So I will stick my other apps.

I like it but .... Make the camera roll (when developing ) in colors not negatives, so we can see what we are developing in black and white..make it an option. (THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE, it's much better now that there's a colored camera roll!)

App. The fact that you get to download the app to find out , that you can’t even use it without purchasing all the edits and the filters. I think a part of it should at least be free so yea that’s why i'm rating it 1 star and deleting the app but bumped bc it seemed a good app but defiantly not worth the purchase since there’s a lot of more free advanced and professional apps

Stand out. I’ve done some dark room fun in college, loved it, since then looked for apps that offered the same classic looks to digital media, and I found this beauty! I adore this app and if I could support it multiple times, I would, I love it! Easy set up, controls, and a great tribute to dark rooms in this digital age. Keep up the great work!

My fav photography app rn. This app has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you will fall in love. You have a lot of control over how you want the picture to look like, including the ISO and what film you want to use (basically how you want the colors too look like).

Brings me back to my darkroom days. I’ve only just started playing around with this but I think it has great potential. I think anyone that has ever done traditional black and white darkroom work will feel right at home. It is a great way for others to feel what it was like without the chemicals! There are also a lot of good pointers about improving your photos with compositional pointers.

Amazing nostalgic app!. I started as a wet photographer years ago and remember the excitement that first time I processed my own film and then that first black & white photo appeared in the development tray. Nothing, NOTHING is quite as rich as B&W photography and this app replicates that in the digital world almost perfectly.

Amazing App; also, request if possible. Hi there! I absolutely love your app! I was wondering if there’s a way to add a feature where you could control the “color” of the selenium toner. I worked tons with Agfa Multi Contrast Classic paper and when you selenium toned that it generate an amazing hue. And I would love to replicate that if possible. Fascinating, Jim.. This takes me back to the supply room darkroom I started out in with my friends Pentax. The magic that happened in those smelly trays thrills me forty years later. Thanks for recreating the experience here: I love screwing around with exposures and emulsions. Throw in a gray filter when you get the chance so we can play around more with depth of field. Dream list- the ability to under or over develop the negatives. Hope you make millions on this fresh fresh look at photography in the digital age. Fun!

Just got it. I really like this app so far! Really did a good job of making it work like a real darkroom! I’m so excited to use this!

Need some info.... So this developer has another app that looks exactly the same that goes by the name Darkr. I am certain this has been asked plenty of times, but can someone please, in simple language, explain the differences between the two if there is any? And if they are the same why not simply remove one of them from the App Store?

some problems with the app. darkroom tool is cool. it is just like the real darkroom. but to be frank I feel the camera program is really hard to use. when choose the film we still can change the iso. And it’s really hard to compose and focus. when I compose is way more harder than my rolleiflex camera. And for the focus, I personally suggest add the vibration function.

Move negatives?. I LOVE this app overall. Rekindling my love for photo. But... is there a way to move negatives from one device to another? If so, I haven’t figured it out yet. 5 stars easily if there’s a way to do that. I’d like to take the pics with my phone and do the darkroom work on iPad Pro...

Real photography revival!. The mystery (or is that mastery) of the art of photography comes to life with this app. This is not an app for someone who wants fun filters or easy edits. This is an app for someone who appreciates how far photography has come and wants to enjoy magic without sniffing silver halides.

Do not download this app unless you are prepared to pay for it immediately. There is no chance to test it, try it or play with it without paying full price. It might be an excellent tool but I do not support the false advertising used in the App Store to entice me to download it. There are plenty of terrific apps out there- and if I can’t trust you to promote your tech honestly why would I trust you with my images?

Great app, just needs a few tweaks. I'm loving this app. I've had fun taking beautifully imperfect images with it and looking for the 'soul' of the moment. Overall, top app. It would be nice to see them not be so slavish to emulating cameras of the past, but instead giving users a choice about what options to have (the main issue here is the upside down large format viewfinder, and tiny view finder for the small format).

Seems cool? Not entirely functional though?. I’ve got the pro edition which, as o understand it, means I should have full use of the app. I’m playing around with the app, I’ve done the tutorials, and I get to the point where I want to play with the burn tool. Unlike with blur and dodge, there’s not a “done” button. And nothing I’ve done seems to cause the burn function to have an actual effect, that I can notice. I jump back into my carefully patched mask, and it always opens the second time as untouched. Interesting app but this is super annoying.

Almost completely amazing! :). This elegant, genius app brings detailed camera controls, and a range of camera-types to the iPad or iPhone. It also brings excellent emulation of proper darkroom techniques that anyone who's processed and developed black and white film will love to bits! My *only* gripe is that the app author did not get the text in the app, for tutorials and general instructions, checked by someone fluent in English. There are numerous misspellings and clumsy/awkward turns of phrase that take away from the otherwise excellent technical achievement of the app, and that's a shame. It would be extremely easy to fix, though, and I'd be happy to offer my services (ambedford AT westnet DOT com DOT au) in this regard.

Great tool and fun to use.. Excellent app well supported and is fun to use. There is a small learning curve but well worth it when everything clicks into place. Has helped me take better pics by marking me think about light and composition before I press the shutter.

One of the best editing apps. This 5 star raw editing app is great for both professional and amateur photographers alike. Incredibly easy to use with great filters & professional editing tools, including an impressive raw image processing feature.

MISLEADING. It’s believe that it’s misleading when the app is classified as free within the App Store and when downloaded, cannot be used without a single in app purchase. I would expect at least one filter to be free for this app to be classified as free. Make it a paid app. This is deception. There’s no place for content like this in society. - My opinion

Amazing but it’s almost impossible to use gradients because of the constant crashing. Everytime I use gradients the app crashes, it’s an important feature to me and it’s very frustrating to lose all your work because of the app crashing

Borders?. Just wonder where can I find borders? Follow-up review: hey thanks. Yeah I found that. The app is great. I have a bit doubt at the beginning considering I've been using PS and LR for years and all those work flow mimicing the film age did seem quite fancy and impractical to me at first. But surprisingly after a few hours trying and some getting used to, it's actually very enjoyable and can get you some unique results. My guess would be that by directing the way your brain works with an alternative workflow, the creation of such different process simply will lead you to a different result. Thats actually quite interesting. But I did found the larger format cameras very hard to compose. Ppl who use large format almost exclusively shot with tripod and thus have time and accuracy to compose. But the idea may not work for smart phones. Last but not least, I wonder if there's better functions can be added in the future to create dof rather than the blur tool. Something more realistic maybe. Of cause thats a lot to ask. Anyway. Great app! Super long review XD

I’m enjoying my trip back down memory lane and taking up darkroom bnw photography once more with this neat photo app. What’s more, Marcus is I great source of help should you get stuck, after reading his free tutorials. So don’t be afraid of this old/new technology, be brave and jump in. It will reward you no end in great bnw images if you stick with it.

Love this app. This app takes a simple picture to a piece of art it's free and totally customizable 10/10 would recommend it.

It does what it was ceeated for. Its just not for me. I did darkroom photo processing for real...and I now realise I dont miss it at all. I own and use tons of photo apps and this is somewhat powerfull but really not user-friendly compared to all the new photo-apps out there.

Darkr. This app brings me back to the good old days of being in the darkroom and experimenting with film and paper printing. Love the ability to control focus, exposure, shutter speed, and tilt in paid version.

A step back in time that will make you a better photographer.. Going back to basics and better understanding the things that affect light and dark in your photos is a great thing to do. Not to mention that it is easy and lots of fun.

Complicated. Just complicated and confusing and the translations are terrible. I feel like I just wasted 7$ and want my money back.

Love love love darkr. It's been great learning to use this app. A tutorial about how each tool works and is applied would be great. There are many tutorials explaining each function.

Love working with Darkr. It feels very similar to the darkroom experience. My "prints" come out remarkably similar to how they did when I was using a real darkroom.

What a great experience. I come from a 4x5 photography and wet darkroom background but have been shooting digitally for over 15 years. What a pleasant surprise it is to turn my iPhone into both a large format camera and a classic wet darkroom. I’m looking forward to doing a series of photos with this app, printing and displaying them. Advantages: The darkroom simplifies things and forces users to concentrate on just a couple of options at once. Using large format puts the image upside-down and backwards, which teaches users to pay closer attention to positional and tonal relationships. Some of the improvements I would like to see (and may have missed) include: Spot metering – I would like to read my highlight and shadow areas to allow me to use… Zone system placements; shadows with detail on Zone II – the “West Coast, Ansel Adams” way or highlights with detail on Zone VIII as Fred Picker invented on the East Coast; Orange filter, for when yellow is too little and red is too much; Cold and warm-tone paper options would be nice, even different paper bases (cream, eggshell, stark white) and why not smooth and textured surfaces while were at it!; Adding a cold-tone selenium effect of slight purple cast would be welcomed; Vertical test strips are needed to accommodate checking different parts of a print; Lastly, the app needs a way to maintain/lock proportions when cropping (or select an aspect ratio). Great app, though. Love it!

Familiarity Meets Modernity. UPDATED; Original review: I love it, except for what I want to use it for is editing photos I’ve already taken. But every time I try to do so, it crashes. That’s the only thing stopping me from purchasing the full version. Edit: Great support from developer! Somehow it started working it’s own so I’ll definitely be purchasing the full version because this is one of the best photo editing apps I have on my phone!

Great app with a newsletter that’s actually useful. I recommend this app highly, it has a bit of a learning curve but rewarding in the end and I found it fun to learn how best to use this app. I used the real physical equipment back in my college years (before digital took over) and this does a great job of mimicking how professional photography was done before everyone could do it with an iPhone and a few apps that do everything for you. This allows for more precise controls on your exposure especially in the darkroom. Great job to the developer and thank you very much. Oh...and In-app purchases are worth it for the most part. Take your time to learn it, you won’t regret it.

Great app.. Update - After receiving the devs response, I am switching this to a full five stars! A quick look through previous updates shows how responsive he’s been with updating and replying to reviews, so I am sold! Original review - I am really enjoying this app - purchased the full version and all, I really like the pictures that come out, and it’s a fun way to learn to edit as well. The only thing stopping this from getting a full five stars - I would love to see the implementation for use of the tele lens on the plus models, it would make this app even better for street photography.

As close to a dark room as an app can get. Brilliant output!

Nice, needs work. Please make the masking tool adjustable, and fix the orientation on iPad. I like the overall effect, but the dodging and burning processes need to be a little more fluid and gradual. On an iPad Pro, the latency in monitoring what happens is a little counterproductive to working intuitively. Good, but I still had to go into Snapseed to make the finer, more critical adjustments.

Idea is good. I like the idea. The controls could be better if they related more to a darkroom - like “expose now” or using a tool not a digital mask to render burn and dodge.

unusable featurs. dodge and burn have no way to save, large and medium formats are completely unwieldy. I regret buying this app.

I see. Okay, let me see if I’ve got this straight. The only lens that can be used with the free version is the pocket camera with a viewfinder roughly 3/8” x 1/5”, which can’t be enlarged. Everything else is an in-app purchase with no way to try it out ahead of time. That’s an easy decision. Delete!

Pity it strips EXIF data. The app is amazing and yields stunning photos when taken directly with it. Unfortunately, it seems to strip EXIF data from any existing photos it processes.

Garbage.. This app is complete garbage. Keep actual film and dark rooms alive and go shoot with an actual film camera. It’s not that hard, nor takes that long and the “test strip” within this app is completely and utterly POINTLESS. There’s absolutely no reason for it. I would’ve given a 0 star if I could.

👍🏼👍🏼. Unfortunately I never got to develop photos in a darkroom but I always thought it was cool & very interesting What you learn from this app is worth the in app purchases alone not to mention the great results you can get Looking forward to future updates keep up the good work

Update just keeps spinning. Help! The update just keeps spinning and spinning. It is stuck in my updates and I can not update, or delete it! Can you please help?

Difficult to use.. Tutorials are very limited; no step by step guidance; contacted developer, who provided no clarification. I was very intrigued when I saw the app’s sample photos, but the unwieldiness of the app yielded nothing but frustration.

Oh, I miss my dark room. I'd hoped this would be so much more. Sticking with Adobe. I get much better results.

Great app!!!. Great B&W photos on the go. But what is the difference between this app and the Analogue app ?

Viewfinder on pocket camera. DUMB... cannot be enlarged. What you see is what you can use and it ain’t much.
