KORG iM1 App Description & Overview

What is korg im1 app? A complete reproduction - and more - of the legendary M1 that defined an era. Mobile Digital Synthesizer for the iPad.

● Selected by Apple as "App Store Best of 2015"
● Ranked #1 on the App Store on Top Paid Music category in more than 20 countries! (15/5/27)

Since it went on sale in 1988 the legendary M1 music workstation rapidly achieved record-breaking sales, becoming a mainstay of the music scene from the late 1980s and beyond. The common element of electronic instruments that have left their name in history is that they had a unique sound that was difficult if not impossible to replicate. Sounds such as the “M1 Piano” is instantly recognizable and have appeared on countless hit records over many years, and yet these are sounds that could only be produced by the M1. And that’s what you can now have on your iPad!

● A faithful reproduction of the original M1 Sound
The PCM data provides the library of the original M1. For the hardware, we analyzed the circuit diagram of the original design, and completely replicated it in software down to the last detailed parameters. Engineers with an exhaustive knowledge of the M1 made careful adjustments in order to obtain the sound of the original unit, something that cannot be obtained simply by sampling the original sounds.

● A continued evolution of the M1
Not content with simply reproducing the original, iM1 provides further evolutionary developments. Synth parts now have the Filter Resonance that was requested at the time of the original. The effect parts, originally consisting of only two effects, have been powered-up to 18 effects. The user interface has also been refreshed with additions such as a KAOSS pad. iM1 is the ultimate version of the KORG M1.

● A gigantic library encompassing 3,300 sounds and 34 cards*
In addition to all 19 of the ROM cards originally released for the M1, iM1 also covers the sounds of the M1EX which expanded the internal PCM of the M1, as well as the sounds of the T-series which appeared as an evolution of the M1. There’s also “BEST OF M1”, a selection of 100 great M1 programs. The new “Smart Sound Browser” makes it quick to find the desired sound. You can also view the sounds ranked by how often they are selected by iM1 users around the world.
*with all the expansion card installed via in-app purchase

● KAOSS pad lets anybody perform
iM1 features a KAOSS pad from the popular KAOSSILATOR, allowing you to perform intuitively just by touching the screen. By using the dual KAOSS pads to play phrases or adjust the sound, even people who are not accustomed to keyboard instruments or knowledgeable about synthesizers can enjoy performing the iM1. There’s also a conventional keyboard, as well as the “Smart Keyboard”, which lets you specify a scale setting and play phrases with a single finger.

● Use with KORG Gadget for song production
iM1 can be used together with Gadget, the music production DAW app that won the App Store Best App of 2014 award in Japan. If both apps are installed, you can use iM1 as a sound module within Gadget, taking advantage of the program sounds in iM1 for music production. iM1 also supports Audiobus and Inter-App Audio, so it can also be used for GarageBand etc.

● Connect a MIDI keyboard and use as a sound module
In addition to enjoying iM1 on its own, you can connect a USB MIDI keyboard* via a Lightning adaptor and play the iM1 as an external sound module. You can easily take along an even more powerful workstation sound module as part of your iPad-based compact mobile system.
*microKEY, nanoKEY etc.

● Interchangeable with the KORG Legacy Collection and the original M1
Sounds that you create in iM1 can be sent from your iPad via iTunes to a Mac/PC. If you have the Legacy Collection M1, you can use those sounds in a DAW.

Korg iM1 app on an Ipad. this is one really sweet app it’s got tons of great voices that are massively impressive and you can even edit those voices with a bunch of visual tools which are really great so I’m super impressed especially with a price and only 25 bucks

Low volume and update. When I play live on stage, the audio is so low on the app (with the volume already turned up all the way). A volume booster would definitely be nice!

Amazing Synthesizer - still room for improvement: AU needed!. We had an M1 in my school, so this this app brings back memories to me. The iM1 app offers the amazing sound and similar configuration options as the original. In particular: using combinations of sampled instruments; adding and controlling modulators to change the sound; assigning regions of the keyboard to different instruments/patches; and controlling instrument/patches by defining key pressure (initial and in some cases polyphonic aftertouch). Pressure thresholds can also be set to trigger instruments, e.g. adding or changing instruments when playing “louder” or “softer”. What is still dearly needed is an implementation of this app as an AUv3 plugin to make this great virtual instrument accessible to apps for music production such as garage band.

Cheap fun. This app is my favorite. Tons of tweak able sounds and I do not need to rent a barn to store a large number of instruments .

Really cool. You can have all the M1 sounds on your ipad! Pair it up with a midi controller and an audio interface for a really powerful sound module. Use Gadget as the sequencer and viola, there's your 90's "workstation"!

Its awesome !!!. One of the best synths out there. Now, please tell me Korg why I cant play this app with Arturia Keystep midi controller ? 🧐🤔 what am i doing wrong?

It’s great, but there’s no AUv3 support still. Since Inter-App audio is being phased out, hopefully Korg is working on updating this.

THANK YOU KORG !!! ☺️. Finally ! Was wondering if it was ever going to happen Seems all is here from Legacy M1 & thanks for the file transfer feature ! Now please add the whole 01/W set & cards & for Legacy M1 too (Waiting FOREVER for that alone !) Sounds awesome of course And now, that the iWavestation is here ... we NEED the same file features to create iOS WS presets & take them over to Legacy Collection !!!!!!

A must buy if you own controllers. How could you possibly pass up a $16 Korg M1? Sounds luscious, easier to use, high dollar voice upgrades, 64 note polyphony is right out of the box. Side 1 track 1 Universe is so fun. If you're looking at it, you need it.

My Go-to Synth on iOS. Like many others, I have bought quite a few iOS synths. They are like jellybeans, it’s tough to stop at one. Unlike a number of other synths though, this is the synth I choose for quick renderings of ideas, or a fast patch that fills a mood. It is simple enough that I can edit and change patches relatively quickly, but versatile and rich enough to fill many needs. I will say that it doesn’t have the punch and power of the best iOS analog emulations, so you may want to add those for your muscular synth sounds. Also, many sounds are very similar to those produced by iWavestation. The difference is that iWS followed this synth and is more complex but adds greater animation to the sounds. It’s not as easy to use and program but was the next generation product (though still 25 years old). I have both products by Korg. They are well-rendered and sound amazing. Add a ballsy analog synth and you are pretty close to having it all.

Back to 1990. I saved all of my money to get a Kong M1 back in the day. I also purchased a Frontal Lobe expander with expansion cards. When that died I got a M1r. Now that has died and along comes this app to save my world! I use this on the road with our band. A controller and my iPad. Glorious. Kudos. Thank you Korg!

IM1. This is a nice app beautiful sounds but what will make it great is that you guys make it au3v support I don’t use it much just because of this reason

Amazing. It’s all here, city pop, summer pop, beach pop, Kyoto summer jazz (pop) anything you want

Please consider adding AUV3. App would be much more useful if it was available as an auv3.

Love the sounds, not so much the UI. Slathered in 80's effects (reverb for days), a real blast from the past with many (non-acoustic piano) sounds still holding their own in modern times. While WAY easier to program with touch screen, I keep forgetting how to store the flippin' patches to the dang User Cards! Perhaps I'll feel stupid when I find it again, but why is it so friggin' hard to do? Going to the user manual now to figure it out. Sheesh!

Almost great.. The idea of bringing this to the iPad is to be commended but it has not kept up with modern programming. The AUv3 update is way over do. Korg seems to lag way behind with software and driver compatibility.

Fun to play with if you don't see it as a sampler!. This is the perfect synthesizer for layering sounds! I don't simply treat it as a sampler but a Linear Arithmetic and DWGS synth that can have sounds layered and split in different ways! I also find the presets and samples interesting because of their "Japanese" sound. It is also one of the few Multi-Timbral apps. This means that each preset can be assigned to its own Midi channel.

Please add AUV3. You will not be able to use this app with Logic Pro or Beat Maker 3. I’m new to iPad and didnt know this before buying. Other than that, the app is great

Great sounding Synth. I bought the iM1 today It was half-price off and I bought the two additional cards. Great sounding presets but the regular piano presets sound like a electric pianos even the grand piano sounds like a electric piano. It says a gigantic library encompassing 3,300 sounds well that’s incorrect and it’s way off, could be a typo. I added up all the cards except for the Library cards and the user cards and I came up with 1,569 different presets.

Nearly perfect. Really good synth with great presets. Synthesis engine has a lot to make great sounds however, for whatever reason every time you are editing a patch which would have many levels of effects, as soon as you try to select a different waveform for any Osc the patch or sound outputs solo and DRY which means you can't audition your patch while selecting different waveforms, you are forced to exit the edit page before it will allow you to hear your change. This has to be the most idiotic procedure I have ever seen in any synth and makes creating or editing patches useless and chore! KORG FIX! This! Please

Great sound -not working in AUM. Great sounds in Korg fashion. I want to give this a 5 star, but it doesn’t work in AUM. All of my other instruments work fine, but not this.

Best synth for the money. With all the sounds in this library the im1 will keep you busy for quite awhile, everybody trying to buy the original m1 but you get it at a fraction of the price with a Huge library, awesome !

5/5 huge amount of preset for people who don’t know sound design like me, and super nice sounds.. The presets are ultra great, I rate this 5/5 for one of the most greatest sounds that come with this app. Because some people like presets already made for them. Like me I not into sound design yet but I’m learning how to create sounds in these synths [noob at sound design]. Great app.

Finally the iM1 Comes Around. Yes! The iM1 finally has AUv3 and is universal. Hope to see the rest of the Korg Synth apps follow soon. This is a major game changer!!

It would be nice. It would be great to see more sound packages for this great software.I love the m1

Awesome Korg M1 on steroids!. Are use it Korg M1 keyboard in the past. This software version sounds are very close to original my M1. Still have a Korg M1 ex (module). I couldn't tell where the difference between hardware and software and the quality iOS app sound's. There's huge convenience when you have choice to all the libraries of card's from M&T series plus your own imported sounds! Great job Korg! Mitch

Great, but it needs auv3. There is no excuse for this not being auv3. This really needs an update fast. I’ll change it to five stars when it’s AUV3

The best all around virtual instrument synth from KORG!. I own the majority of Korgs iOS apps and this one kinda takes the cake on features alone. I would also suggest getting the in app purchases for this! You can program your own drum kit with a keyboard chase option! I am ecstatic because I have really been searching for an easy way to map drums to my Arturia beatstep without remapping midi notes. You can also map any sound to a key on the drum kit and it will auto assign the lower pitched notes with a no assign slot. Going to got absolutely bananas with drum kits now! Not to mention this thing does practically any instrument sound aside from heavily modulated stuff. My gripes are bit of a high learning curve for beginners, and it has no easy mixer page (could just be on master fx page) aside from adjusting each instruments volume one at a time. The app sounds awesome and is a great addition to iOS music making. After touch supported for the seaboard like gear. Also works great with geoshred more mode, but I just record audio for that because I don’t know how to record mpe midi into cubasis. Midi routing is pretty good and allows channel selection but lacks source option. Software manual is online. Obligatory comment about Korg not making audio units (or allowing them in gadget) for apps like aum3, cubasis, etc. Use aum + rozeta sequencer suite/atom + midiflow + this... for a good time. 🤪

Great sounds. I wish I had found this months ago it is opened the possibility of exploration and the ability to create new sounds on my canvas thank you

Awesome. I have all kinds of pro keyboards. This app is great. I've used it on gigs Sounds are great and it's a reliable app. No crashes. Get it.

I love the sounds available in M1! Need Audio Unit version please.. This brings back classic sound from 90s dance music.

Not easy for me I had a real m1 for years. Some times the patches plug in great some don’t I purchase all cards for app I think sounds are great I would buy again

Almost perfect. I love this synth, for the good sounds; but there’s no way to control master volume from my midi controller. I have in my iPad other apps like Grand Piano, It gives the option to assign a control for master volume and works perfect. Please make an update or instructions to deal with this problem.

Confusing as heck and the store patches should have come for free. Some of the samples sound really bad , I don’t remember the big m1 sounding like it’s been bit crushed into the dirt. Could just be me. Idk However I still love it. And yeah for 30 bucks they needed to include add on sounds for free.

Where's the M1 card?. I've been using the app for about a month now, and the iM1 card which says best collection is not accessible.

Love it!!!. Sounds great and you can have with all the cards!!!

Reliving the 80s. I love this app. Google iM1 Program Change and Audio Bus 3 and you can get a list of the bank and program numbers so that you can select patches from a midi controller or other program. Hope they make this into an Audio Unit. That would be awesome.

Help! Can’t save anything!. I LOVE this synth module and use it all the time. But at some point, I lost the ability to save patches. I hit “Write,” then select the card and location I want to save to, double-tapping it to bring up the keyboard, but when I hit return, nothing happens! If I hit close and go back to the card, it’s just a blank preset.

iKorg M1 serious ambient Ipad performance. For years I’ve toyed with music apps on my iPad and iPod each one provided some amount of fun pleasure and intrigue all at the same time accompanying my dream that one day these music apps would be very aligned within a classical musicians intention .few years ago music apps began to show serious dedication to the possibility that series musicians were using them .KORG is one of a handful of dedicated companies to be friend the dedicated lightweight compact portable artist like myself and offer their classic KORG M1 synth KEYBOARD in a portable downloadable iPad app form .since downloading it and learning it and custom designing the massive sound library to my ambient taste I’ve never hesitated to introduce these sounds into my live and recorded performances with confidence, with joy and with aesthetic delight.

Needs Auv3 support please!. Great app! Good sound quality. Highly recommend it.

Love it!!!. This is my go-to whenever I make a beat!

Great but need Auv3 version for Logic Pro iPad. As the title says. When I was a younger person back when the M1 first came out, all of my favorite RnB groups and producers were using the M1. The sound was incredible. But I couldn’t afford it. Now those same beautiful sounds are still great, but infinitely more affordable. The only issue I have, and this isn’t Korg’s fault, is that Logic Pro for iPad came out and it doesn’t work with this product. I’m hoping the dev retools this app to be AUv3 compatible.

It sounds great but… auV3 PLEASE!!. I can’t imagine why a company with these resources would not make they’re awesome legacy keyboards play nice with the rest of iOS. But I realize that would minimize Gadget 2.0’s ‘play nice’ monopoly. C’mon guys. Get on the right side of history! Edit Oct 23’: With Logic Pro now available on the iPad, auV3 is more necessary than ever. Pleeeze?

New Review - AUv3 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😎🔥🔥🔥🔥. They did it! Thanks Korg!! M1 was one of my favorite hardware synths. It’s one of my favorite iOS apps too but it so needs to be AUv3. C’mon Korg! I’d even pay full price for it again! Really!

Nice but two major flaws.. This is a great reproduction of the m1. But if you are using an iPad Pro the effects cause crackle. Must not be compatible with 48hz. Also no auv3 in 2020 is a huge problem. Doesn’t have to be a full synth. A preset player would be enough for us working in midi. Program our sounds in standalone then use in auv3.

Drains iPad battery when not even in use or background. Fully charged my iPad yesterday. Today I open it and it’s down to 60%. Why? 100% of the battery drainage was caused by iM1, which I haven’t opened in months.

NO AUV3 SUPPORT. Come on Korg this is ridiculous!!!! It’s been how many years now? I deleted Gadget because this. Gadget was born on iOS yet you give the flexibility to desktop only. I never bought the desktop version because of your shady business dealings on iOS. I spent over $200 on your iOS products. To access gadgets on desktop, to put in your personal daw, is $200. Over it.

Good sound, but, not Audio units support. not Audio units support, even some free app, has audio units support.

Universal App?. It would be nice to have on the iPhone also given the power that the iPhone has now.

Low sound. The sound is low even with all turned up

It's Hear. Awesome. Second KORG app I've bought, and it is rock solid. Just ordered their microKEY 25 for my iPad.

Another great Korg App but paid expansion card not working in Gadget. It's great to see cool M1 recreated on an IPad. The expansion cards are still not showing up in Gadget!

Nice rack. Great app, serves me well as a rack module.

Blast from the past. What a glorious age we live in. I used to own the original M1, and then bought the Legacy and Digital Edition VSTi as soon as it was released. Then this app is released, and instead of paying thousands for the sounds (as I did back in the day) I paid the price of a pizza for this great app. The sounds are pretty much identical to the original M1, and I've only been playing with this app for a few hours. A winner!

Classic sound, but are paid expansions available in Gadget?. Perfect reproduction on iPad. Kudos Korg.

Working in the past. Love revisiting old patches, still useful, sometimes importing patches from M1 keyboard via iTunes into app - a little finicky. The app is a favourite, so I will be persevering on the data transfers. Korg would love to see more Triton/Trinity in the Korg Module app. Great job.

My long lost beloved :'-). The original M1 was my first and best synth that I have ever owned. For years I was regretting having gotten rid of it and was over the top when Korg released the VST and bought it immediately, And now the iOS app is just plain amazing. So easy to use and over 3000 sounds to chose from, and I can take it with me everywhere! The sounds is still nothing short of spectacular and have not dated at all. They have bought back such nostalgic memories... Welcome back, my love. I am so sorry for having deserted you. You have returned more beautiful than ever...

Great for live performance!. I am a live performer, who was looking for a synth app that I could play with my MIDI foot controller while playing bass guitar at gigs. I had downloaded three other synth apps before this, and they were disappointing because their interfaces were horrible, and they didn't do what I needed them to do. I was about to give up on using my iPad live, and was considering using my foot controller with a full-size synth instead. I downloaded the Korg iM1 app on a desperate last-attempt whim, completely expecting to be as let down as I was from the other apps. Was I pleasantly surprised! Not only did this app give me superb, easy control over sound shaping, layering, filters, effects and envelope generator, but also a highly configurable and easy-to-use MIDI interface. The app also allowed me to do some things live that I didn't think I would be able to do with my feet. (I needed to slowly raise and lower pitch in two of our songs, which I was able to program into the envelope generator, and map to custom key zones so I could isolate that effect to specific keys). The control this app gives you over MIDI configuration is great, and the sounds are rich and powerful. There is also a great interface for storing and loading your sounds. I pre-program chords into my Keith McMillen 12-step MIDI foot controller keys, and the chords play beautifully from the Korg app through the PA. I use the iM1 at every gig now, and it's such a comfort seeing it on my iPad screen as I'm about to begin a set. I highly recommend this app.

Is it a pure Synth? Dated? Who cares, it is a work of Art.. For me, a couple of "pure" synths were 2 of the the 2014 Stars of iOS: Mitosynth, Photophore...another Korg Monster, Gadget, and the stunning FX suite, Flux were high up there last season... Cut to 2015. iM1 may well use some dated old sounds, but on my iPad, it sparkles not only as one of the most beautiful sounding Apps I own, but maybe the most stunning visual design in the history of the platform. Amazing. A Grand Slam and I doubt it will be topped in this already fantastic year for iOS music production.

Great app. Money’s well spent.

Phenomenal !. One of the best sounding synths on the App Store!

Yeah!. Finally it all makes sense....

Awesome application. Perfect recreation of the M1. Easy interface. Works perfectly on the IPad. Awesome for live setup!

Crap, no Omni midi selection.. Wont work with external keyboard via USB midi. This app is missing the “Omni” midi selection standard like evey other iOS keyboard apps use. All my other keyboard midi apps work just fine using the camera adapter -Kong is the only app that wont work. Korg shame on you. You took my money and screwed me. M-Audio MK3 keystation.

Sound editors delight. I’ve owned the M1, M1R and M1R-EX at some point in the last 20 years.. this app brings me back to almost the exact same vibe/sound, minus a bit of DCO hardware punch only sound engineers will notice. The deep patch editing interface options on this one are good for a synth, not just an M1. This synth can make nice ambient pads, dark sounding strings, leads etc usable in 2023, but you have to make them yourself! Keep in mind the preset sounds were designed in 1988, so the presets “sounding cheesy” is mostly due to that, no fault of the app

iM1. Love my M1.....Nuff said

Excellent Synth. Great sounding synth. Lots of presets although one could argue that many are practically duplicates with different names. Tons of tweak options and integration with Korg Gadget is a blast. My only request would be to make song selection stick with a single click and to make saving your favs more user friendly and available from any screen. Well worth your investment.

Easy and great sounds. A great interface with many ways to tweak the sounds. Great for beginning sound designers with hundreds of patches to play and re-program.

WOW!!. This is amazing! I had an original M1 and now I get it back in a portable format. Excellent. Thanks Korg.

Bluetooth midi not working. Great classic sounds, however the bluetooth MIDI doesn't work. It works with Gadget app though! Please fix it.

Will only stay great with AUv3 version. Great app, have been using it for years where it’d have been 5 stars but with Apple’s deprecation of IAA and since iOS15 it has become problematic in that it randomly looses background audio so the app needs to be brought to forefront to get sound back which in the middle of a live performance is a major problem. Korg needs to bring it into the future with an AUv3 version that keeps all the current features and ideally adds more MIDI parameter control. I’d even buy the app again if that’s what it takes to make that happen.

Amazing!. Great keyboard for a fraction of the cost of the original!

I like It !. Such a treasure from the past , who thought a whole m1 could fit in a iPad!. I like Korg even more now!

Korg M1. One of the most useful synth on the market, love all those sounds and so easy to work on them.

🤔Good but can be Great. I’m stuck here guys I’m confused 🤷🏾‍♂️. How is it possible that Korg has all these great sounding Apps and NO auv3 support ¿🤔? That’s like having a rare expensive sports car 🚗 sitting on used dirt bike wheels😖. 🤨Now let’s get it together you are better than this NONE of your apps shouldn’t support auv3.... Now #LetsDoThis so I can own them all and rule the world😈!!!! Your friend sincerely BeatzByBiz

Stellar. This has become my go to synth in my iPad-based rig. If only Yamaha and Roland would follow Korg's Lead on releasing their classic synths as apps.

Amazing. With the right controller (korg micro key air, blue tooth....) it plays like the real thing...

This has keys. When played correctly this does stuff Neatomosquito I recommend it to any one with fingers especially thems with opposable thumbs Nice work Yamaha

The first synth I ever owned.. I was 18 years old when I got the M1 back in 1988. I played it till the backup battery finally died in 1995. It's been twenty 20 since I had the opportunity to enjoy these sounds, and now I'm happy as a clam. Thank you Korg for making an aging electronic musician happy again. Perhaps next the itriton? please :)

Fantastic value. Wow!!! After buying almost every synth app in the store this comes along. It features really great sounding, well rounded variety of sound that suits anything I'd ever want to do in music. Purchased the extra cards with no regrets. Couple this with audio buss and zippo your on your way to hours of fun and creative time. Thanks for this fine app.

Awesome wave synth crippled by a horrible patch management interface.. I would say that iM1 has “one of the worst UI” but having tried so many synth apps It’s probably safe to say that it deserves to get the first prize as THE worst User Interface of all. To be specific, I’m talking about the Cards as the chosen method for managing pads. (Basically everything that doesn’t have to do with saving/loading/managing is awesome). The idea behind imitating the “original hardware” not only makes the interface extremely difficult/unintuitive to navigate but introduces artificial limitations. It’s like half of this app was done in present time while the other was written back when MS Dos was your primary OS! You get a bunch of “cards” with completely random patches inside. You can’t move them, can’t group them, can’t edit and save or delete individual patches in these cards, and can’t even favorite them! Then you can buy additional cards, and will have even more of this completely random madness! There are a lot of good patches but good luck finding them (especially a second time). Especially because (as of this writing) there’s no AudioUnits (AU) support, which would make things a *lot* easier because you could save the preset from your DAW and come back to it later. But with only IAA - you’re back to square one. Oh, but there’s a search tab that can look for patches by Instrument and Character, but it’s not well done in terms of intuitiveness and allowing you to find what you’re looking for. It only makes *browsing* better. It’s the preferred way to navigate through this chaos but wouldn’t even be needed if the patches were stored in a normal folder-like structure like every other modern synthesizer app out there. As a supplementary tool this search would be a nice touch, but not as the only way. There’s also a “Popular” tab... really... Who cares? How about a Favorite tab that I can put my own stuff into?? My popular won’t be the same as someone else’s. To store a patch you have to “write” it to one of the “user cards”. You get 4 cards (“intuitively” labeled Library 1 through 4) each having 50 slots. Yes someone had to program this complex silliness! But it’s not just cumbersome, it’s also a limitation! 200 user patches max! So if you thought you could use user cards as a “workaround-favorites” well, keep in mind this limitation. It’s really good wave synth, one of the best in fact, but guys please get on with the times! Just put all the patches in a folder-like categorized structure. Forget about “user cards”, and “write” interface. Just give us: Save, Save As (unlimited of course), Move (between categories/folders) and Delete (for *any* patch, as there are many I know I’ll never ever use). These things are industry standard. There’s not a single musician that will disagree with the things I’ve said here, even the ones who own the original M1. I really love the capabilities and sounds of M1, as well as the UI for the individual and multi patch manipulation, it’s really well done - clean and intuitive. But I can’t help but hate the completely unproductive patch managing interface. It takes the joy and creativity out of what otherwise would have been one of my top favorite wave synths. Also a huge problem, as others have mentioned, while selecting and previewing a sound wave for the OSC, you get the sound in pure form, not how it will sound within your project. So on/off there would be very useful.

An awesome and unique app for synth players!. When I purchased this app and bought the in-app purchases, I was happy when I first started messing with the other instruments. I mean, for example, the harp, strings, tubular bells, pan flute and percussions were used for the SNES versions of Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia in Japan. Also, to my surprise, the Busy Talk instrument in T1 was used for Dr. Robotnik's theme in The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, my childhood favorite, especially Tails. I've enjoyed this app a lot, and many thanks to the musicians such as Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury from Queen for introducing me to this fabulous synthesizer! Love you, Korg! <3

Im1 great but crashed and I lost all my user presets. It's nice to have an m1 on your iPad for sure. Everything was glorious the first few days. Saving quite a few presets until it crashed and I lost all the presets I made in a few days. Had saved properly so must be some sort of bug.

Sounds AMAZING. Needs midi controller mapping.. This is probably one of the best IPad instruments I've used. Sounds amazing. The only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to map the controls to a midi controller. I would love to be able to map any of the dials, levels, etc, to a midi controller. It's the only feature that's missing.

The best. The best 😃😃😃😃

Inspirational. I've been a guitarist for more than 30 years and never cared about synths until I got an iPad. I have no nostalgia for old synthesizers or sounds. My reason for getting this was simply because the sounds were very good and inspired me to start creating immediately. Being a guitar player I'm always looking for good pads to play over. This has so many that I wouldn't have to create my own if I didn't want to, but I wanted to. And I did. It also has some very expressive lead sounds and the drums and sound effects are usable without sounding to "80s". The fact that this is compatible with both Audiobus and Apple's own inter-app audio means recording is very easy and very high quality. What makes this synth amazing to me, though, is the ability to blend different sounds together to create a whole new sound. I think that keeps it from becoming locked into a certain period of music. If you're looking for good sounds and usability, this has them. The on-screen keyboard is tiny so you'll probably want to use this with Korgs Gadget app, some other kind of midi sequencer/ controller or by plugging a midi keyboard controller into your iPad. An awesome addition to my collection and will be for yours as well. I've read some of the negative reviews and I can't say I'm having any issues. If it doesn't work right then either your midi keyboard isn't compatible or you had a bad install and need to delete and reinstall. If you can't make the in app purchases then that's definitely not the app because everyone seems to be getting them just fine. As for controls not being accurate, they are a bit of a pain if you're a little OCD. You may try to get a control on 10 but when you lift your finger it jumps to 11 or drops to 9. If you need it RIGHT on the mark then you'll go a little nuts. You can do it but you have to be careful and deliberate. Personally, there's no noticeable difference between 9 and 10 in most cases so I couldn't care less that this problem exists. If you have problems renaming a custom patch like one reviewer I read, don't over think it. They tried to simplify the process but made it more complicated in doing so. To save something simply leave the edit mode. Seriously I am having so much fun with the midi capabilities in this app. When someone complains about the midi in this app I'm not sure what they are trying to do. This does everything I can think of. There are rows of controls that allow you to make all kinds of custom changes like pitch shifting, panning, attack and release, of course, levels... enough that I can control three groupings of sounds using just three fingers on my controller. It sounds HUGE!

Better than the original. I started my career as a song writer/keyboard player back in the late 70's, and kept up with and bought all the newest hardware as it progressed. Having owned the M1 and T1, imho this app sounds better, the originals had a nasally AD converter, the iPad is cleaner thus this app sounds better! Very faithful app to the original M1 and T1. Would have saved my back literally having this back then :)

Dated. I bought this primarily because I wanted more pads for Gadget, which I love, and it's moderately useful in that respect, but otherwise a horribly dated synth, sounding very early 90s. In many respects, everything good that has happened to synthesizers since then has been in reaction to PCM synths like this: workstations which gave you a cheesy, fake-sounding patch for every instrument in the orchestra, instead of focusing on what synthesizers do well, which is create electronic sounds and music. If you want loads of bright, cheesy stabs, plucks and hits of windchimes organs, and "synth bass", here you gol Most of the sounds are defined by putting a very sharp attack sound with a lot of bright reverb over another more sustained sound, but most everything sounds glassy and shallow. Sounds like sitar, flute or saxophone will make you want to cry, they sound so fake and wrong, and the many basses & drum kits are far inferior to what you can get your hands on today, including of course Korg's own Gadget or Odyssei. This is pretty much a glorified "Marseille"; if you like that Gadget a lot, then you'll like this. And vice versa. I feel it's overpriced given that this is recycling some very stale old sounds.

Great and wonderful sounds abound!. If you are at all interested in keyboard and synthesizer sounds for your music playing and production, then this app is most useful indeed! The term "rompler" doesn't do justice to the presets included. Blows other similar apps away. From synths to full blown orchestras, there is a huge variety of sounds to inspire you! get the extra cards too!

Beautifully done!. While this synth is forever associated with some very easily recognized synth/sample sounds from the late 80's and early 90's, it is capable of being so very much more than a "rompler". Korg clearly put a tremendous amount of effort into making this their flagship stand alone iOS synth and it shows. Everything sounds really, really good from the pcm sounds to the crystal clear reverb and delay effects which go well beyond those available in the original M1, and the kaoss pads allow a one to create authentic pitch inflections with the many ethnic sounds available. Korg is clearly treating the iPad as the fully legitimate professional music creation platform it is now becoming. Thanks Korg.

Great but one tiny problem. As in the keyboard is tiny. I love everything about this synth app except that I can't seem to change the keyboard size to something bigger like pretty much every synth apps out there. Please fix this. My hands and fingers a big and I'm looking to buy other kong apps but.....

Amazing!. Very satisfied especially with the price. Now Korg needs to make the X3, X5, N364, Triton Le, M3, Kronos

In a word - WOW!. I remember many trips to Guitar Center many years ago as a college student when I would turn on the M1 and drool at the awesomeness. Of course I couldn't even dream about buying that synth at the time. So when I saw this on the App Store, I didn't even have to think twice about hitting the BUY button. Thankfully I have not been disappointed. For under $40 (including the two card packs),you get an amazing abundance of patches and combis that are sure to delight. I actually have a Korg M3 and this is the perfect complement. I was also very glad to find that this worked with my ancient M-Audio Keystation 61 connected to an iPad 2 with the original camera connection kit, but with one caveat. Although the Keystation worked without external power, it died after about 15 minutes. I'm guessing the iPad shuts off power to it after a while to save power. This was remedied by connecting the Keystation to a small powered usb hub and then connecting that to the camera connection kit, and then to the iPad. If using the camera connection kit, make sure to connect your keyboard to the kit first, launch the app, and then connect the camera connection kit to the iPad. Grab this awesome workstation now, and happy jamming!

I have another M1!!. Just got this and the cards, it's what I remember and I love it! I bought all of the cards and some of the sounds on them are brilliant! The only thingI can't figure out is the write function, I actiually got two to wirte to the user care but after that it wouldn"T write so if you've figured this out please let me know. Korg you've out done yourself and nwo on to the Wavestation!! We're never happy are we? LOL

Synthetic Bliss. I had the M1 when it first came out -loved that synth- eventually sold it and got the M1REX sound module. Just sold that as well for $250. Now I've got all those great sounds back- except they sound cleaner and clearer, not to mention all the additional effects which were not there on the original. All this for $20? Ridiculous. Put it inside Gadget? Fuhgeddaboutit. Korg is spoiling us. I've actually heard people on forums complaining that Korg's apps and IAP's are too expensive. Hahaha.

Awesome. While I'm not a fan of 99% of the presets that come bundled with M1, the synthesis engine is really powerful (and fun) if used with discretion. At first I found it aggravating that none of the presets I had saved to the Library cards were showing up in Gadget until I realized that this only works with presets saved in Program mode. So now all is fine - I just wish there were more hours in the day to explore the vast potential of these apps!

Doesn’t work with keystation 49es. I tried everything and also googling around. So one star for now. Not a good Christmas night !!!

In a word: Wow. Having used synthesizers since the early 70s, I have tried them all. Then I tried this app. WOW! It sounds better than my 3 real units, and costs a very small fraction of them. This is a testimony to the quality of Apple (air 2) and Korg. I am using my $1600 Roland synth to control it. Great job!

Great product. Korg did it again, wow nothing but praise. This is my best investment so far saving a lot of money on sound module. I Purchased Irig Midi2 for my IPad and now I feel sorry I ever purchased a synthesizer, virtual synth programs, and sound modules, this beats anything I had in my repertoire, that is why I purchased all the library that did not come with the M.

No AUv3, useless in GarageBand or other DAW. Great sounds, but can’t be used with in app midi. Maybe sample the sounds? Wish there was an easier way with AUv3... it’s 2020, how is this not a thing?

No midi. There's no way to dial in precise values via midi cc. Using your finger is impossible because the value changes on touch release. Will update the rating if they ever add simple and common feature for iOS synth.........

Midi Controller Problems in current version. Great app. Very versatile, but with the current update, my midi controller no longer works with the app. I had no problems before the update, and my midi controller still works with other soft synths, like Arturia's iMini. I am using an M-Audio Oxygen 8v2 midi controller connected via the Apple camera adapter. Hope this problem becomes resolved quickly!

Disappointed. This sound just like the iM1.I want my money back please!

Pure nostalgia with added possibilities. My best friend's dad had a Korg T1 which the family used to maintain their piano chops. I, however, used to spend hours on it painstakingly composing horrible soundtracks for the films my friends and I made on our VHS camcorder. Now, years after having bands and side projects, I get to revisit this experience in a novel way with almost zero downsides. Hearing the 'Lore' preset takes me right back to that place! I feel like I can go back in time and and make right all the poor note choices I made then!

Nostalgic sounds.. Nostalgic sounds galore. I never knew about the Korg M1, even though I owned an M3 at one time. Just playing through the presets reminded me of so many songs. I have the "now I know what instrument created that sound" moment. I can't possibly imagine what an M1 cost back in 1989. It was certainly ahead of its time. I've purchased many Korg software synths for iPad and was not impressed until now. I wish Korg would create a midi sequencer that was built into the iM1 versus using Korg Gadget's app. I would like to see Korg Gadget accessible from within iM1 dedicated sequencer.

No AUv3 traps these awesome samples in a silo. Wishing to glob KORG would wake up and smell the AUv3 coffee... I’ve bought every sound pack for this thing as they are classic but now I can’t use them with any other music apps >={

NO Sound.......fixed 5 stars now. I would like to give this synth a good review only on my iPad PRO 12.9 there is no sound? Not sure what is wrong? I researched online and found out by doing a reboot of the iPad this fixes the problem....and it did. This synth sounds great and is very flexible.

rubio. me encanta esta app

And The Winner Is.... The Korg iM1 is the best all around audio synthesizer app available in iOS. Period. Yeah, yeah, yeah - I get the Korg Gadget criticisms. But in the context of a stand-alone app of it's type - even compared to the flat-out professional Waldorf Nave, and the impressive Virsyn Poseidon - iM1 functions as a fully mature, completely tweaked software synthesizer app: musical and user friendly; has 1000's of iM1 programs imminently accessible, searchable, and (easily) editable; plus great polyphony (on late generation iPads) - I have yet to find a single glaring fault using iM1. My conclusion is that Korg's iM1 is a beautifully done iOS recreation of (and improves upon!) arguably the most popular professional digital synthesizer engine of all time. The gold standard. (5) stars.

Very Accurate M1 Sounds. If you remember the Korg M1 from the 80's, this app is amazing. Great sounds. The IAP for both sets is just $9.98. That will give you more M1 sounds, and the T1 sounds. I do recommend a keyboard controller. Much easier to play than the iPad. For the price, Korg has a winner here.

Inspiring. My first real big boy workstation was the Korg M1. Purchasing that instrument while still in high school was the most important event in my musical life. It set the parameters around which I judge all things that inspire me musically. I was an early adopter of the Legacy Collection for my Mac. At the time I exhaustively compared each sound I knew so well with my original unit. I sent in a few bug fixes which brought the virtual M1 to jaw dropping perfection. I didn't mind that the extra noise the electronics produced wasn't there. I didn't mind the extra polyphony, the increased stereo image and overall improvement in the sound. It made the experience better in all the most important ways possible. And now to have that and more on my iPad is extraordinary. A heartfelt thank you to Korg to bringing this product to market. You truly get it.

Expansion Card, Sound Selection Issues. Expansion card issue quickly fixed - bravo! Sound selection displays do not scroll upwards, and are obscured by the larger (and more useful) keyboard. As with all music apps, there is no synchronization between apps (aka MIDI) outside of their own ecosystems, though the M1 sounded best within an array of sound sources. KORG presumably has the resources and clout to remedy this situation, but (presumably) is content with locking users into Gadget, diminishing the value of all of their apps, and iPad as a music creation tool.

Fabulous synth but no AU support. Sounds and looks great. But without AU support I never use it. I hope Korg can bring this synth up to date

An Evolving Beast...and Multimode!. I initially underestimated the iM1. It's a synth that I dreamt about as a teen, but it's now 2015 and the sounds of iM1 are mostly locked in an era. That's also one of the things that's great about this synth. The sounds are instantly recognizable and 'bad' or 'cheesy' in a great way. It practically encapsulates much of the definitive sounds of the late '80's and early '90's. ***The Multimode alone is fantastic and makes the iM1 perfect as a stand alone synth with a sequencer or DAW and doesn't seem to be a CPU hog. Well worth the price, and now I essentially have an M1 in my backpack!

Super illusion de Chicago. This is a great app love it

Sequencer. Where is the sequencer? How can I make song?

Great synth. Great price

I love it. Great sounds, legendary Korg M1 Make this possible; for Standalone & AUv3 please

Needs better Module integration. I am amending my review to five stars, it may not be clear but you need to save your presets to the library cards, not the user cards, or they won't show up in Darwin within Module. Once I got that sorted, I ran out of complaints. Well done Korg. Maybe work on the documentation a bit, but ok, I'll forgive you.

AUv3 Needed. Great sounds but this app seriously needs AUv3 support. Please update it!

Sounds so lush.. I have several synth apps and this one always gets the most play. Once you get past the somewhat cheesy 80s presets and starts crafting your own patches and adding the generous effects, you hit real sonic magic. My favorite pads i have come up with are all iM1, such a beauty!

So Many Great Sounds. I finally sprung for the iM1 because of the price drop and for the associated Darwin gadget the lush sound pallet that it brought to Gadget is fantastic. I found that I seem to not be using Gadget as much anymore but am now using Fugue to sequence the iM1 with midi in multi and combo modes controlling up to 8 different sounds at the same time with send effects. It's cool because the sounds I create I can use in Gadget...once I get around to it but I seem to be immersed in iM1 exploration for now.A truly professional sounding app. I think I need a deserted island.

Meh. Having owned a Korg T3 and several EXBs in the day, and the Legacy M1 VST more recently (which included the entire M1/ T-series library with all the EXBs), I found this iM1 underwhelming. I purchased it with the idea of turning my iPad into a 'mobile sound module' to use onstage. I was disappointed to find it had a very limited sound selection (basically just bread & butter sounds from the M1) and the expansion library that was included in the Legacy VST, which had better and more interesting sounds, was nowhere to be found. The iM1 apparently cannot load SysEx data from the Legacy version and now I'm stuck with boring, dated and well-trodden sounds, making this app virtually unusable.

Auv3 please. Please update this amazing instrument to AUv3 compatible! I just spent $30 and can’t use it!! Please and thank you!

Superb sounds and lots of them. KORG have done it again with the release of IM1 for iPad. This is a great app by itself with some unique functions like Kaoss pads, different sound layering and a cool chord function. The best use for some of us iOS musicians is having iM1 available within the other app, "Gadget." Note that on iPad-mini Retina iOS 8.3, all of the iM1 memory cards, including the IAPs, are available and function properly within Gadget (select Card, then swipe left or right on the memory cards).

This will undoubtedly become one of the best synths in iPad. It's awesome. Just buy it if you are into iPad synths. This is clearly well produced, high quality. Like Thor, Magellan or Animoog. They have two in app purchase options for 4.99/each. Got them immediately and now have so many presets. If you have Gadget you can even sequence. Korg is the best!

Simple simply amazing. This device is lightweight and full of presents. It is amazing
