New Lakota Dictionary - Mobile App Description & Overview

What is new lakota dictionary - mobile app? The New Lakota Dictionary (NLD) Mobile App is the best way to look up Lakota words, hear pronunciation, and view thousands of example sentences while on the go. It’s the ultimate electronic Lakota learning and reference tool.

• Male and female voices for audio
• Consistent phonemic spelling – Standard Lakota Orthography
• Superior cross-referencing capabilities
• Faster and more responsive than online versions
• Works offline, without active data connection
• Inflection charts show complete inflectional paradigm
• Copy/Paste by word or line
• Save favorites lists and navigate search history
• Leave comments to improve future versions
• Built-In keyboard for typing special characters
• Built-In lemmatizer searches for conjugated verbs and word forms
• Over 400 native speakers involved in its development and review
• Accurate and reliable
• Fun to use and explore
• An excellent self-study tool

The lemmatizer is one of the biggest advantages of the app when compared to the printed version of the NLD. Affixes are added to words all the time, so identifying stems with multiple affixes can be challenging in a print dictionary, but this dictionary app does that for you. If you type in e.g. waŋwíčhablake the app will show you the entry waŋyáŋkA.

Extraordinary resource on iPhone - Pronunciation doesn’t work for me on iPad. Absolutely love the revisions and new version of this. Wish pronunciation worked for me on ipad as well as it does on iPhone. As a newbie to this beautiful language, I look forward to learning with this tool in my tool belt.

Great resource!. This is a great app for those that want a resource for the Lakota Language. It has so many entries, for how the words are used. In the latest update, it has a great chart for all the different conjugations of the verbs. This is very helpful in learning the diffeeent conjugations.

Pronunciation. I’m not able to get a verbal sound from a lot of words. It keeps wanting me to copy or go to or search when I want to heard a pronunciation of a word

Needs better navigation. When I’m in an entry and I click on another word it would be nice to be able to swipe or use the arrow back to go back to where I navigated from to go between pages rather than swiping and it goes to the next alphabetical entry. I know it’s a dictionary but it would be nice to have some text about letter sounds and piecing together sentences correctly since it’s different from the English order. That’s where I have a problem with the example sentences clicking on a word to see what it is and then not being able to nav back to where I was without re-searching the page I was at

BRAVO on new version!. Amazing updates… these make the app REALLY easy to use. So happy! Love the pop-up congregation (“inflection”) charts & that you can create specific lists in “favorites” for study purposes. All of these new features are really going to help me in my Lakota language learning journey. Thank you, LLC!

Fraud. The editor is non-native and not even from the US. His definitions are not translated correctly. So. It rely on this info. He is a fraud.

Needs improvement, a lot of improvement. The application is confusing to understand.

Super handy. It's great to have this mobile dictionary! Quickest and easiest way to look up new or confusing words. Lost a star because navigation is not great easy to lose your place and have to re search the word.

Good App For All Lakota Learning Levels. I have the book but the app is really fast and helpful with word meanings and conjugations. I am pleased to use the dictionary which was made with Lakota people. It is a really good thing to read and share. The dictionary can be searched with english or lakota words. it can be read in lakota if you are a fluent speaker. The dictionary will supplement other lakota learning materials you may have. Its really exciting to be able to read and pronounce new words quickly. u can also hear audio of each words pronunciation.

Deleting soon. App is very frustrating to use. Needs to be updated. I’d rather take the time to search on kiwichoiye than refer to the dictionary for the newly added words. The app won’t allow me to view the word I’m searching for and instead leads me to a different word. I cannot tap on any of the datives for further conjugation and the words with male and female pronunciation say entirely different words. Disappointed in the neglect of some simple app structure/development.

Still supported?. The app is great; I use it quite often. I notice though that it hasn’t been update for some time. Is this app no longer being supported? I know the LLC website it mentions going through the web browser and saving it to the home screen, which iOS isn’t letting me do (asked at an Apple Store and they said I couldn’t do this, so I assume it’s not just me).

NLD V2 update. This is a review for New Lakota Dictionary, particularly after the very recent V2 update. A previous update was attempted by the LLC in April of this year, and unfortunately issues with that revision caused some major headaches and may have shaded the dictionary reputation slightly. I’m happy to report that it appears whatever coding errors that took place have been rectified with V2. The dictionary now works absolutely fantastic. Many new words and phrases have been added, along with their recordings, so what is unique about thus dictionary, the ability to hear the words spoken by male and female voices remains a huge benefit. There is really no other Lakota dictionary to compare it to. I sincerely do not know how folks learn this beautiful language without this dictionary; it is indispensable. Some fixes: I don’t notice the delay when typing words beginning with “F” or “u” anymore- an issue that plagued V1. The favorites button DOES work, and a great pre-copy function in the search has been added. This allows you to copy a word from the search bar into another phone function- say, an email or a text. To me this is subtle encouragement. The dictionary is designed for you to USE the language - in texts, emails, and other written modalities, along with being spoken. Writing strengthens reading, reading strengthens speaking. The “review” function (small down arrow located on the right in the search bar) allows you to bring up words you have previously searched, something I personally lobbied for, as this function did not work on my phone in V1, although it did for most others. This function is awesome and I’m grateful for the fix. Another issue with the previous version was the inability to search for words that included a glottal stop (indicated by an apostrophe “ ‘ “ in the SLO. This has been fixed as well! There has to be something to complain about- the only thing that is seemingly bothersome is that there are still words appearing in the entries and full text example sentences that you cannot click on and look up. You can still type them in the search of course, but many words can be looked up straight from the entry. There are still many that can not. Also, idiomatic phrases are super important, but phrases that appear in a list cannot be clicked on to look up, except as individual words. It would be great in the next update to be able to click on the whole phrase to be taken to the entry. I use this dictionary day in and day out. As a serious Lakȟótiyapi student, I find it irreplaceable. It’s an amazing resource and I’m grateful for the work that went into its creation, from the fluent speakers who provided many of the example sentences, to Uŋčí Ella Deloria for her text corpus, that makes up many other example sentences, to Lekší Ben Black Bear, Leksí Kevin Locke, Haŋkáši Iris Eagle Chasing- all of whom (and others as well!) grace us with their voices in the app, and of course all those at the LLC that put the tech work in to make it happen- an incomparable undertaking. Looking forward to investigating the app even more! Michael Rossi Phoenix. Arizona

RIP-OFF!!. Just purchased through App Store. Nothing works. All I get when I click on the icon is a description of the supposed content. Not functional. I just lost $9.99.

V2.0. I was told to purchase 2.0, because the previous version was terrible. I was hesitant. It took me a year. So far the app has shut down my phone twice when it did finally open I did a word search and clicked the sound to hear the pronunciation and it shut off my phone. Then I tried again and the speaker icon doesn’t work there is no sound on this. I’m so disappointed.

Bummer. The male female pronunciation shut down. That is the main learning process for me.

Help. Nice resource but the favorites button does not work so I am unable to save anything. Also it is not easy to search and come back to where you were? Some examples just return an error message without explanation? Not user friendly at all.

Purchased recent and not supported. Bought the app and it’s essentially dead on arrival. Really disappointed it’s still for sale when it’s not been migrated to current compatibility.

LLC is a corporation from Indiana. Ullrich is a hobbyist from the Czech Republic and is the compiler of this dictionary. He and Meya and the LLC and the TLC are banned from the Standing Rock nation. Despite Standing Rocks initial investment, they have never shared revenues with this corporation- no Lakota tribes do. There are no citations meaning no honoring of the people who have helped and which word and which community they are from. Their writing system was forced on the Lakota people in order to sell these products. Also, the text corpus database where this stems from- the Lakxota people not any tribes have access to it. This is a data grab, harvesting from people who already are experiencing settler colonial violence.

Excellent!. This is a fantastic resource. The pronunciation recordings are invaluable and I can’t praise the format and navigation enough. Thank you for creating this! A language as beautiful as Lakota must be preserved for all our benefit.

App won't load content. After downloading the app, it will open, but no content loads. Unable to find a way to contact the developer. Hope this is resolved soon.

Issues. For some reason the sound won’t play anymore (I’ve had the app about a week and a half) and restart etc doesn’t help. It was great up until then. I wish there was a help/support option
