DQS Mobile App Description & Overview

What is dqs mobile app? This is the official Racing Weight Diet Quality Score App, now with the ability to save your DQS data for as long as you want and view graphs of your progress over time!

This app allows you to calculate your daily Diet Quality Score (DQS) as described in Matt Fitzgerald's book, Racing Weight.

The Diet Quality Score is a simple instrument that allows athletes to measure the overall quality of their diet. The DQS Mobile app was designed to make it as easy as possible to calculate a Diet Quality Score each day.

As you eat throughout the day, enter the servings of each category of food that you consume. Tap a box to consume one serving of that category, tap it again and it will become a half serving, and one more tap will set it back to zero for that box. You can tap the category name to view an explanation of what foods fall under that category. Your total DQS score for the day is shown in the upper right corner of the page. DQS data is saved for each day you track it.

You can also log your weight and body fat % on the bottom of the Tracking page. We recommend you log your weight no more than once per week.

The Graphs page lets you see how you are doing with your Diet Quality Score over time. You can view your data over the last week, month or year. When viewing yearly data, it is displayed as 52 week-long averages. You can view graphs showing your total DQS, your weight, or your DQS score by specific category.

You can set a target weight, body fat % and a target DQS score on the Profile page.

Easy to Use and Effective. This app is very easy to use and it is perfect for providing the right level of awareness of what you are eating without requiring you to go overboard with serving sizes, calorie count, macro-nutrient tracking, etc ...

Good app. I really like this app. Makes tracking food really easy. 2 things I wish it had to make it over the top. 1. Index for how to record more foods. 2. Had a way to upload workouts to this app.

Helpful. Easiest way to food journal, with helpful explanations. Best used when paired with the book.

Used to be a great app. I used to use This all the time. Tried to use it today and there was no way to track food. I deleted the app and reinstalled it. When I tried to log in it said the password was wrong. I tried recovering the password. I set a new one and it said it was wrong again.

Needs log by meal. I have been using this app for almost a year now, admittedly off and on. The one thing I wish this app had was the ability to log a score for each meal and a comments sections to write what was eaten. If it had these features I would rate it 5 stars. The reason why I would like this is when logging multiple food items and multiple meals I sometimes can’t remember if I logged something or not.

Good app. This app is easy to use and effective in combination with the Racing Weight book and is a good adjunct to my food logging. The app has intermittently shut down on me or was not able to load, but that hasn't been a problem the last week or so. When it works, I love it.

Awesome app!. I use this daily. My family does too. It’s simple (meaning people will use it), and has a great focus on quality of foods. It’s less helpful when it comes to quantity. One suggestion that would get this to 5 stars: include as a data point the ratio of high quality to low quality foods.

Great Concept, limited uses. Works great for calculating your DQS *BUT* only if you know what category the food goes in. Ideally, I could say "I had two slices of pizza" and it would give me the correct categories - it doesn't, I have to deconstruct the food. I'd also like to see totals per meal so I can target areas that need improvement. Worth $0.99 but, I wouldn't go higher just yet.

Great Guide. I’ve been using the app for about a month and have found it very helpful as a reminder to eat balanced and whole foods. Much easier to use than a calorie counting app. I would also recommend reading the book The Endurance Diet by Matt Fitzgerald, which discusses in much more detail the theory behind the app.

Makes racing weight planning so easy. I love the app. I wish it were a little clearer on where vegetarians should record eggs, but it's super easy to use, has good information hidden in obvious places, and makes what would otherwise be super difficult very easy. I'm a fan

Basic but useful especially for RW users. I have gone back and forth between this tool and full-featured calorie counter apps. I've decided to stick with this one. If you are bought into the Matt Fitzgerald system, as I am, this is a simple tool to ensure as many of your nutritional choices throughout the day conform to his Racing Weight/Endurance diet as possible. When I was 30 pounds away from my target weight, calorie counting made more sense. I needed that kind of data proof that my food choices could make a big impact. I don't need to be convinced of that anymore. This app, despite its limitations, keeps me on the straight and narrow in a very simple way. It does not demand much of a time or memory commitment on my part. DQS scoring, once you get the hang of it, is instinctual. In short, it works. The only change I would make is having it report back to the health app that comes with the iPhone.

Works great. Goes along well with the book, teaching is easy.

Makes tracking what eat simple. This works great for making sure I eat a balanced diet and I know when I’m not eating the correct amounts of s food group

Working again and back to being great. I used this app all the time. I really liked it and found it very valuable. Since the most recent iOS update it no longer works. I tried sending a message to the developer first, but I did not receive a response. I hope it gets updated since I paid for it and would like to continue using it. Would change review to 5 stars if it returns to its previous functionality. Update: after not working for a vm couple weeks it now works again. As I stated, back to a 5 star review. Not sure what the problem was but I think it is a great app.

Use of app. Easy to use. Does not seem to coincide with estimates on ideal weight and body fat. Love the way to see what you are eating and how much to eat. A game changer

Helps keep me in check. I love the simplicity of this app. It's very user friendly and helps me to keep track of what I eat daily. It doesn't prevent or discourage me from eating anything I normally would, but makes me aware of my eating habits. As a result I've found aspects of my diet that could definitely be improved on. Great tool for developing healthy habits.

Don’t give up on figuring it out.. It took me a while to figure out which food is which as it’s often somewhat subjective. But make a decision and go with it. Then tracking is easy and useful imo. For me the biggest thing it’s done is keeps me accountable. Kept me away from the crap. I think twice before putting anything on my plate wit a neg. or minus sign.

PLEASE UPDATE. NEEDS SIMPLE ADDS.. 1) Need to be able to separate Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks 2) Need to add notes section per day 3) Need to add ability to log body fat percentage App is easy use but once you start adding half or full servings for the day, you get lost in if you added something or not. If it was separated by meals, would be much easier to keep track.

Love it. Love the app’s simplicity! Other apps are so feature rich, it’s overwhelming. This one is quick and easy. I would love to be able to track legumes and meat protein in the same day.

Constant crashing. This crashes as soon as I open it, making it unusable.

Minimalistic and very easy to use. The best diet is the one you will follow. Similarly, the best diet tracker is the one you will use. DQS makes it really quick and easy to use their app so you’ll keep using it.

DQS helps keep me in check. Little confusing at first but once I got the hang of it, I love it!

Like it a lot, a few additional features would make it even better. Love the simplicity and ease of use for tracking daily diet quality! There are two things I would change to make it just a little better: 1. I wish that I could have it in vegetarian or vegan mode one day, and then omnivore the next. I do eat meat, but not every day, so sometimes I'd like to score my legumes as a protein, for example. Currently, the app will only allow you to be in one mode for all days, so if you switch to veg mode, all of your days switch over to that mode. 2. I wish there was a place to put notes about the day - just a small field that I could fill in something I felt was important. For example, on weeks that my training load is reduced and I'm eating less in general (and therefore getting seemingly lower DQS scores), it'd be nice to have that noted so that when I look back I remember that detail.

Great!. Easy, fast and effective, when used in conjunction with reading the book.

Can't reset password, app is useless now. This app works most of the time. I just updated my phone - the app required a new login, understandable. However you cannot reset your password because the reset password link doesn't trigger an email.

Um... Saving scores please?. Bought into the concept. Very glad to have an app to aid in the concept. But, um, saving scores and noting trends seems a must. Hope our buying the app helps support a little more development of this obvious feature request. Waiting/hoping😐.

Very helpful, especially with the book. Book tells you why, how, and what to eat. This tool makes it easy to monitor your diet.

Great app, needs a few tweaks. Simple to use, and the interface is quick, so tracking isn't a chore. My main request is for more flexibility in eating modes. I'm mainly vegetarian, but eat fish twice a week and eggs almost every day. In the vegetarian mode, there's nowhere to track eggs, but in the omnivore mode, I feel punished for eating legumes/plant protein as my main source.

Great! Simple!. I love the simplicity of this app. It makes being conscious of eating good food so much easier than counting calories. Tracking the types of food you eat during the day, along with the quality, has really helped me avoid over eating at all. Love it!

Quick & Easy to Use; Could Be More Flexible. If you’ve read Matt Fitzgerald’s books, you know that in order to make this app work for you you need to be honest with yourself. There are no hard and fast rules, and it’s easy to lie to yourself about serving size. But that flexibility also makes this app very easy to use. I sometimes have to go back and remind myself what a serving size is, but I like that logging a days worth of food can take less than a minute. I wish the app had more flexibility for omnivores. I frequently don’t eat meat. But for omnivores, legumes are counted as vegetables not proteins. I can switch back and forth, but I don’t always know at the start of the day if it’s going to be a meatless day or not.

Great tool for Matt Fitzgerald readers. This is a well designed, helpful tool for quickly tracking your eating habits throughout the day using Matt Fitzgerald's DQS. Not only does it make tracking your eating easy, but it helps see correlations via some very clean graphs. If you're counting calories and getting lost, this may be your answer (but read Racing Weight or The Endurance Diet first)!

Game Changer. Very simple effective app that has changed my life. Thorough descriptions about the food groups really help. Excellent app

The best approach to food!. The book in conjunction with this app has taken the pain out of ‘dieting’. I no longer have food guilt and I look forward to eating because I know that I’m filling up with nutritious energizing food that will help me recover and preform my best. I had so many concerns about my diet and goals but after using this app and reading Matts book I feel like my diet is on autopilot and I’m seeing results!

great healthy diet tracker. no need for calorie tracking. just mark the HQ (or LQ) categories. cal reduction/optimization comes for free. read matt f book for more details

Really useful.. I am following it to the letter, however I feel like counting negative points for some of these categories is counterproductive. Why would whole grain pasta for active people be +2 but regular pasta -2. It just makes you feel like you did wrong when really you’re taking the carbs that M Fitzgerald is promoting you to. Otherwise, really intuitive and good!

Good could be better. I wish the categories were further broken down into breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack like the online version does. That makes it easier to track and update

Simple and effective. Usually hesitant with "diet" apps, but the DQS approach to overall diet quality is fundamentally sound. This app is simple and quick enough to where there's no reason no to use it and it helps you be more aware of what you're eating. It would only be better if it could integrate with other apps like My Fitness Pal and Strava.

Super Helpful, Love the Vegan Mode. This app is super useful, and so easy to use that I find it the most practical way of tracking the quality of my diet. The vegan mode is really helpful for me. Definitely prefer this to something like MyFitnessPal, which is more work and doesn't provide the same value. The Racing Weight strategy just works better, in my opinion.

Would benefit from color coding meals. As another reviewer said, I found myself confused as to whether I had already counted a particular snack in a food group that already had multiple logs. IIRC, that reviewer suggested a separate entry for each meal, but I think you could also allow us to select different colors for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack which would help a lot.

Great app! Lots of help. The app is great. Lots of category examples and explanations. The DQS is helping me to keep within my nutrition guidelines for training, something I have always struggled to do. I only wish you could plan ahead. I like to plan out my meals the night before so I can make sure my nutrition is adequate for my training schedule. I would like to enter my categories in advance. Maybe the next update???

When it works it’s great. The latest update was a fail. I was using this regularly but when it recently updated it won’t let you save any data. Tried to contact support over a week ago and haven’t heard back.

Love This App. I've been using this for a little over a week. I absolutely love how it is improving my diet quality. Here it is late in the day and I'm going to need a snack and I look at my chart and see what else I could use to round out my day or improve my score. Before I would just eat whatever sounded good. This is an awesome and easy way of keeping track of your food.

So useful and helpful. This is so useful and helpful. Simplicity makes it elegant. Only thing I’d add is a tab that reminds users of Fitzgerald’s five rules (eat everything, etc) and also give even more info about what fits in each category. Thank you, Matt!

Easier than keeping a food log. I love the simple UI, and I love not having to count calories or macronutrients. There is a good amount of guidance in the app, but it really is best as a companion to Matt's book. I wish there were a vegan version available!

Not ready for primetime. I like the algorithm this is based on, and I like the concepts in Racing Weight. But the app has bugs. It has lost my data several times in the last 36 hours I’ve tried to use it, continually resets to 0 and erases what I’ve logged on a given day. It also doesn’t appear to save data across multiple days for tracking purposes. Until I can get through at least 24 hours without losing data I can’t endorse it.

Doesn't really work unless you enter everything. The selection wheels don't work properly. Didn't know something so simply could be so badly implemented. Give me my money back.

Works well, some minor improvements would make it great. Easy to use, great companion to the Racing Weight book. A couple of suggestions for improvement: - Apple Health integration to auto read weight and body fat - searchable database of foods with the recommended categories for easier recording. The descriptions for the categories are great but the database would be a handy reverse lookup

Really easy way to track. The best thing with this app is the minimal amount of effort needed to generate a meaningful measure. It also acts as a disincentive to stray, given the negative score.

Good basic tracking for the DQS system. You must be pretty well aware of the DQS system to use it but good to keep a daily count of your activity. No frills but useful to stay accountable

Buggy, slow, minimal features.. It crashed the first day using it. Drop downs are slow and unreliable.

DQS mobile. I think this is a useful app, and it's simple to use. One small criticism: one is forced to select either meat or plant protein (pulses , beans etc) in the settings. As someone who eats both, I would like to see an option to have both available as a daily choice. Pulses and beans are more, to me, than just another vegetable. Thanks - great app.

Half functional. Helpful for tracking the DQS, but the daily weight log doesn't work. There's a bug and it only let's you enter the body fat %.

Simple way to focus on quality. Great way to get motivated to eat higher quality food. Easy to understand explanations of the categories.

Crash. The original app was great. It definitely needed to be updated to log more than one day worth of progress. I have not been able to try this one. Crashes every time I try to open it. Tried to uninstall and all the usual tricks. Still crashes. Look forward to the next update.

Incomplete. Save your money, could be way better but just too shallow to be of any value. Not enough categories & sub categories. My fitness pal is a much better option

Not ready to be released!. I'm happy to finally see this app come to the iphone, but I'm not sure it's ready to be out of beta. It's hardly useable; the selector for food categories, or quantities keeps getting hung up whenever I try to input my data. Please fix and I'll happily update my rating.

Useful. Does what it claims. Really needs a simple feature: view a simple calendar with your DQS number in each box. The monthly graph isn't that easy to read.

Nice idea, a bit clunky. Cannot make it through a day. I was entering food and got the DQS to read NaN. I got rid of it by shutting down and restarting the app but then only future foods were calculated what was there was ignored. I'd like to report this but see no way to do so. Not usable like this :(

Vegan/vegetarian option?. Great app! I wish there were an option to switch the categories for vegan/vegetarians. For now, I count non-dairy as dairy, and soy/plant protein as meat.

Should be 0. The line about “can’t save scores” is hidden by the “show more”. Kind of elides the fact that this app is good for one day, then you have to reset everything. Useless.

Doesn't work correctly. Can't use this app. Every time I select any of the dials to record a daily score it quickly opens then closes. Waste of $1

Looks nice but unusable. The app is a nice idea. However, I receive a 'NaN' error whenever I enter anything. Restarting and reinstalling did nothing.
