OpenPaths App Description & Overview

What is openpaths app? OpenPaths (https://openpaths.cc) is a secure data locker for personal location information.

Using our iPhone app you can track your location, visualize where you've been, and upload your data to the OpenPaths website. You can then download your data from the website in a variety of friendly formats, including KML, JSON, and CSV. The OpenPaths API enables you to integrate your own software with the platform.

You can keep your location history to yourself, or you can share it with specific research initiatives, art projects, or educational programs as you so choose. The OpenPaths online interface allows you to manage who has access to your data. Your data is secure on the encrypted OpenPaths servers and cannot be accessed by anyone without your express consent.

OpenPaths is a new way for individuals to take ownership of, to work with, and to share the data that they generate in their daily lives. OpenPaths is a community project initiated by the Research and Development Lab at the New York Times Company.

- Runs in the background
- Minimal battery drain

Unable to use. I actually can't tell you anything about the app since it would not let me sign-up or sign-in. I decided since that little thing would not work then the app as a whole would probably not be worth the effort and so I deleted it

Awesome!. A great idea and an amazing app!

Inaccurate to the point of worthlessness. Although the creator's TED talk is certainly inspiring and this application's UI is well-composed, the utilization of iOS's location APIs is poor at best. Overnight, with four bars and a view of the southern sky, the app will place me anywhere in a three-four mile radius—meaning that since work is three miles away, I have absolutely no valid data. Over 24 hours, I'm placed in 30 locations despite never leaving my apartment. I honestly wanted to use this app, and while it has so much going for it: decent UI, good service integration, amazingly interesting concept— the core function of logging my location simply DOES NOT produce reliable data. I refer you to xkcd's "tornadoguard" comic.

Works as promised. I've tried out the API, it's just fine. Battery life is not impacted too much, and accuracy of the points is good enough for me. Nice work. Please keep it simple.

Inaccurate tracking app, defeats the whole point.. So inaccurate it's absolutely useless. Never left my property today, but in the last 18 hours shows points as far as 4 miles away.

Own your data. Sync failures had me lose a month of data and recently seems a little bit abandoned. Got the app after a Jerr Thorpe talk over a year ago and loved playing with my own data in R and Python but lately the app feels pretty abandoned. Maybe time to delete sadly.

So what will happen to my years of movements ?.... I kinda want this to still exist

Crashes. Crashes every time I open it.

YAY. Glad its on my phone now where it seems to make better sense. Thank you =)

Great idea. And really simple UI. However, I get lots of inaccurate results so far. It shows me at places I have not been. Still have to try out the API.

Crowd mapping, if that's what you're into.. If you want to track a specific path, you and I will need to look elsewhere. The screen hides typical iPhone info bar at the top (see screenshots). Power consumption when I engaged the app was noticeably faster, to the point that my charger was ineffective: in twenty minutes it had only increased two percent. Accuracy aside (they do not promise it) it seems inconsistent in the way it records: starts off leaving markers in regular intervals, then randomly stops leaving gaps which is why it's not good for paths.

Not working :(. This app doesn’t work, and hasn’t since I last tried for iOS11. It fails to sync my data and it’s display hasn’t been updated for larger phone screens. I miss the app, when it worked. I used this app for years because it did such a good job of unobtrusively giving me a way of seeing where I’d been, but unfortunately it seems the app just doesn’t work any more. ☹️

Great. Works best when you drive a car, ride a bike or walk. When you're in the subway very often it gets confusing because it also adds places you have only been under the ground.. But its interesting to see what data all those apps can access when you let them use your location data.

Good baseline. This app shows me the general paths of where I commonly drive which is something I wanted. It is not accurate enough to distinguish between two parallel routes.

Not enough points. I might be more interested with at least ten times more data. And too many sync failures. Battery usage was not noticeably affected. Bye

Great concept, annoying and puzzling results. I live the idea, but the resulting data is of such poor quality that it's useless. The app places me 1 - 3 miles from my true location in ~80% of points logged. Also, interval between data capture is variable and appears arbitrary. Cool idea but to crude to be of much use.

So close!. Brilliant and innovative concept carried out with less than desirable seriousness. Crashes so often it's of little use. I'd like to see this improved upon! Could be something great with a lot of work.

Performs as advertised. Not a dazzling work of art but it is utilitarian. My installation has been stable and smooth. It provides interesting information.

Finally!. This is the app I've been waiting for. A super simple long-term tracker. I'm not interested in accuracy or real-time. I just want to be able to look at travel patterns over a week, month, and year. Please keep it simple and focus on battery-life preservation as you update. Thank you! This is a great start!

Just what I've wanted. The basic data but enough.

Lovely app, room for improvement. Seems to be a fairly good little app, has been tracking well so far. Good security measures, not too draining on battery life. Suggestion for future versions might be to allow comments to be made on each individual point when opening the app, to remember significant moments such as what you were doing, who you were with, etc. for personal reasons.

Works well. Not sure why I do it, but it works well and shows where I have been in a very general sense(not accurate background recording, but this would be to save battery i guess). My location must move a lot because of my phone switching towers even when i am at home, which I assume is an issue with how the iPhone determines the location. It would be nice if it could filter this out some how

Hang & crashed!. This app hang up and often crashed at almost every launched. Already tried to re-install but the problem persist. Tracking even worse. Need to learn from sport tracking app, they're mostly far better (some of them even great!) than this supposed to be real tracking app.

Nice in principle, but doesn't work. Lots of phantom sightings in places I've not been. And it's not even that I've forgotten.

Australia?. I'm getting really bad results for past records here? Is there a reason behind that?

Yay ! An update but.... Is it me or it saves less locations than the previous outdated application ? It looks like I got only some dots instead than a lot of dots :(. One other thing is we can’t reach the developers of this app ?

Great. I can only few the last day though... Looking forward to seeing future tracking though!

Need to be able to store data for longer than a year!. Great app but why can't we see more than one year? I really hope this changes.
