Great selection of words. As an SLP, this app has a tremendous selection of words in a convenient format to use during therapy. It is also a great resource for older students in therapy because there are no pictures that would allow them to say this is "baby-ish." A suggestion for improvement word be to separate out the various forms of vocalic /r/ words into their own categories (I.e. /air/ beginning, middle, and end vs all in one folder). The only reason I did not give this app 5 stars is because i need to use the mute button. The voice is way too sing-songy and sometimes the pronunciation is off.

We are enjoying it!. My 5 y.o little girl is struggling in kindergarten because Portuguese is my first language and it is very hard for me to make her believe in my English . I bought a letter factory from Leap Frog to help "us" practice the phonics and it did helped a lot, but my little one is having a hard time putting them together. When I downloaded this app I read all the reviews and decided to give a shot. I'm very surprised on how it is divided in groups of sounds and the first group we worked was the magic e (made), Chloe got the hang of it after the fifth word and she IS reading the words in that group. The only thing I didn't like is that the audio doesn't give the child the chance to try by herself first because it says the word as soon as she clicks on it. I fixed that by putting my phone on mute and she can change that when she is done trying to ready, so it's only to check if she ready correctly. Besides that I really liked the app :)

Tz. I can't spell sings on you, I cannot believe that I can spell 6 to 9

Disappointed. So disappointed that the playback mode stopped working. Tech department treated me like a moron, insisting that I didn't have the sound and mic settings right on my iPad. They stopped responding when I told them all my other apps with mics and sound worked fine. A wasted product for the intended use.

Really Helpful Phonics App. Phonics Genius has many features that you can use to customize it for your student/child, incluing font size, sound, highlights, adding cards/categories and play/learn mode. You can even record your voice or the student's as they say words with whatever you are focusing on. This is a great little app to reinforce the Orton-Gillingham-based lessons that I use with my clients.

Exceptional and helpful. This is a fantastic way to help kids learn specific sounds. My son kept getting tricked on his "b" and "d," confusing them for the other. In one day with this app he has mastered them. Now he's mastering the difference between "ar" "er" and "or." we love this app!

No sound. It doesn’t work on my iPhone 8.

Sound needs to be louder. Can barely hear it!

Good but overwhelming. This app is great and gives parents many options to customize what their child is learning. But, it's overwhelming with so many categories and words...especially for beginning readers. I wish there was a way to hide certain categories or words and then unhide them once your child has mastered the simpler ones. It's a good app though!

Sound issue. No matter how high the volume is on the phone, I can barely hear the app voice. Also same problem with recording. Also when I swipe the word, I cannot swipe back to return or reverse or review.

Great for ESL students. Having English as my second language, I am always seeking tools to allow me learn it. Finding a tool to learn phonics has been one of the most difficult things I have faced given the resources available in the market. Your application is very friendly to use and easy to understand. Thank you for contribution. It really has been the tool I was missing to learn phonics. Your tool is amazing! I am so happy I got it.

No customer support. I was excited when I found this app because it allows my dyslexic students to get the extra practice that they need. Unfortunately, the sound does not work in the game mode for customized lists, and I make lots of customized lists. Despite Alligator Apps' professions of excellent customer support, they have not responded to any of my e-mails on this issue. It may be an easy fix, but since the company does not provide support, there is no way for me to know. I had hoped to ask parents to purchase this app for the kids' iPads, but I can't recommend it because of the poor support. A shame, because is does have potential.

Great App for Reviewing Phonics. I use this app with my son. It's so much easier than flash cards and he can use it independently when we are in the car. He reads each word out loud and then checks himself by touching the sound symbol. I wish there was a category for the beginning "a" sound like in alone, away, afraid, etc. I know I could add one but the app's voice is so much nicer than mine!

EA Can Make 3 Sounds. There are three sounds the vowel blend 'ea' can make and this app is missing one. The vowel blend 'ea' can also make the long A sound as in the words "great", "break", and "steak".

Earning Points For Play Would Help. hold the interest of my 6 year old son. The content is spot on (5 Stars)and there could be loads of learning going on here if my son were even just a little more engaged by earning something! Haha! Anything —Stars, points, cash to by some virtual something...he like to win things. While great content the game application of finding the right word of six words just drones on with the words, great, perfect or good job. Cool sounds would also add to raising the engagement factor as well. Great app just need some swagger to engage a savvy audience!! Engagement score (1 Star) combined with content score (5 stars) to come up with a total rating of 3

Fantasic. Love this app. Great homework app for 15 year old autistic son for learning new words. I can hear where his weaknesses are and the direction to take in helping him with speech issues! UPDATE: This app is more of a 4 star -- if there were pictures with the words it would be PERFECT.

Excellent. Great app for use in special Ed reading programs. I use it with my behavior disordered students who don't have a lot of patience, and they love recording themselves. I like that it has one syllable words that illustrate the phonics rule, but also multi-syllabic words that challenge students to apply the pattern in longer words.

Phonics Genius. This app is perfect for my speech students and I love how I can have it repeat the word if the student says it incorrectly. I also like how I can turn the volume up to help the student hear how the word is pronounced and later on turn the volume down to challenge the student to decode the word by themselves.

GREAT APP!. I love how there are many pronunciations and a speaker. The bad thing is every time I play a record of my voice, the speaker's volume is smaller

Love. I am teaching my 4 year old son to read and this app great! He is not ready for all of it yet, but we found lots of new words for him to sound out that he had not tried before. Love the game mode and all of the customizing options. My son does best with all caps. So I was very happy that was an option. I do wish there was a way to just un select words from a group. I hate to delete them because I may want to add them back later when he is ready. It would be nice to just be able to check or uncheck word that you want in a group like there is on some of your other apps. But even without that change this app is so useful!! We will be using it everyday.

Unbelievable quality, features, and easy. I've used this awesome app for 2 weeks and I can't believe that it is free with no in-app purchases to trick you into buying in order to use the complete set of features. I've used the ready made list for the CVC (short vowels), I've made customized list with "highlights " and category pictures I.e. The Polar Express. And I've let the children that I tutor record their own lists. If you find that you can't record, simply go into settings where you select the app and flip the button for the app to access the mike and do the same if you want to add pics to your categories; flip the button to let the app access your camera roll where you can select the pic you want to use. I love free but I would actually pay for such a useful, simple, and fun app.

Not working. Sound doesn’t work and support doesn’t reply

Good but needs improvements. It’s very helpful. However, the words change by touching the screen. This limits us to cover and teach the kids letter by letter. The words accidentally change by a gentle screen touch. It’s very annoying and limits all the good things about this app. Adding one option to change the words by screen sliding than touching will greatly help.

Very nice but needs a few more settings. Being able to add and delete words is great. The list of words is huge and It's easy to create your own category/word list for words You want a child to practice before reading a story. The words included with the app are at a variety of difficulty levels, which is both an advantage and a problem. I would like to be able to arrange the words according to my preference so I could group words by level and/or hide words rather than delete them. A work around is to mark words as favorites, which has its own category at the end of the list and can later be changed as a child progresses. In the game portion, I would like to be able to turn off the encouragement phrases. They are too frequent and get to be annoying. Turning off sound in settings does not turn these off. Overall, this app gives you plenty to work with in clear phonetic categories.

Love this app to use with Abeka. This app is a great companion for anyone teaching with the Abeka Phonics curriculum. There are so many fun ways to study and teach with this.

Better than flash cards!. Creating, maintaining and carrying flash cards around is, for me, an obnoxious burden. Now, I don't have to worry about any of that thanks to apps like this. They've done all the design work for us parents and teachers. I am so thankful for this huge library of phonics flash cards I don't have to worry about making and losing! I love the clear, simple design and the fact that kids can record themselves saying the word. Thank you for creating this useful app!

Sound doesn’t work. I have tried multiple time to use this app. The sound is inconsistent. I can’t tell if it’s frozen or broken.

Phonics Genius. Thank you for this app! I am thrilled! It offers so much and all of the settings are easy and provide a lot of variability. The record feature is such a bonus! I can target a phonics skill for a student, have a quick engaging activity, and go on with our lesson. Good stuff! I had no idea!

Glitches. I cannot get this app to combine or copy lists as it advertised. It also asked me to rate the app FIVE times within my first ten minutes of use. It still continually asks for a rating.

Amazing. As a teacher in early education and as a mother, this app is the best phonics app out there! You can customize your own words and lists for each sound. The only possible way It could get better is if they made this interactive phonic helper more colorful! So glad an app like this exists!

dyslexia teacher. I love this app! I can find word lists that match many of the skills and concepts that are in my lessons. It offers a good quick reinforcement. I also love the customized lists that can be created for each individual student for the words they specifically need., or the fact I can create a sight word list of my choice. Thank you for creating it!

I don't get it!. I downloaded this for my dyslexic son to help him read. Yes, there is a an enormous list of words but aside from listening to a voice read word after word, what else are we supposed to do? There is a record button but nothing ever happens. What is the point of recording if you can't play it back. And yes, I enabled the microphone. Everyone says this is awesome but I think it is monumentally boring. How is this helping my child to read? There is nothing engaging or interactive about this. I can only surmise that I am missing a key component here but have been unable to locate instructions anywhere on the Internet or within the app other than to change fonts and colors, whoopdedoo. There must be something more here, hoping someone from alligator contacts me or this is being deleted.

Phonics Genius. Fantastic app for older children, but how about one for preschoolers? Of course, many of the words are too abstract and unfamiliar for that age, but easy, recognizable pictures of short one or two-syllable words would be great for speech therapy! Seems ok but can’t hear anything. I don’t know if it’s just my phone or what but I can hear any of the word played back. I can hear them faintly but that’s it. When I exit the app other apps are super loud and clear. I tried killing and re-launching the app. Even deleted and re-installed it. Shame because looks like it would’ve been real helpful for my son.

Gift to educators and students. This free app has just about every phoneme you can think of. It is organized in alphabetical order by phoneme and students can record themselves and then compare their pronunciation to the app speaker. It is being successfully used by our beginning readers, students with learning disabilities and English language learners. The free versions of many of the Alligator Apps have many excellent programs but we plan to get the full versions when our funding becomes available. ABC Genius, etc. are also highly recommended. Thank you for this gift.

The volume is so quiet, the app is of no help.. It would be awesome if it was fixed

Amazing!. The ability to customize this app makes it one of the best to use with my students! It is easy to navigate through and has great custom features...like the ability to record your own voice to your custom flashcards and the option of choice making when the vocal stimulus is presented. Students can choose from between two to six choices...which makes this app useful for young and intermediate learners. You will not be disappointed with this app!

Phonics genius. One of the few apps I've found based on the Orton-Gillingham system for this great price. I can set up the list of words based on the syllable type or sound we've just learned and my students can self-check if they've read the word correctly. Nothing fancy but my little 1st graders feel very successful reading such "tough" words.

Versatile. I like using this app in speech therapy with my article kids AND my phonics kids. The number of sound choices is great, although there seem to be some missing for what I need at times. I like the updates with the recording option and the repeating the word. Also the starring is nice for marking words the student did well with.

Very complete!. I purchased Brill Kids reading a couple of years ago, but my daughter lost interest fairly quickly. It was difficult for me to personalize and focus on one learning objective at a time. With this app, I can find a phonics skill she's struggling with, and have her work on THAT particular set and be done. I LOVE this app!

Somewhat helpful as examples. My son can see and hear words and phonic rules that apply to his own spelling and high frequency words! If I can not find specific words that go with the rule he is working in these cards are good to give him examples. I wish I could find an app that EXPLAINS why the letters are that way or explain the rule that goes with the word.

Microphone not working. The app is great. My mom is a speech pathologist and she uses this app a lot with her students. However, I am running the latest version of iOS 8 on my iPhone and the microphone won't work with the app even after I flipped the toggle to allow it. My mom's iPad is running on iOS 6 because the app allows her to record with that version. Could you please update the app for iOS 8? Other than that, awesome app!

No Sound... until I unmuted the iPad. I will come back and rate this app when I have had a chance to use it properly but I want to leave this review here to help others who might make the same stupid mistake as me... I thought that because I could here sounds in some programs such as music that I would be able to hear all sounds... I did not realise that the little switch next to the volume control switch actually was a mute button. I flicked this switch and hey presto, I got sound.

Fantastic. For this app to be free is awesome, there are more speech therapy apps out there but they cost $40 and up, so I was really impressed that this was free. Thanks :)

Great app for Speach Therapy. My son is a thumb sucker and having trouble with his s sounds. This is helping him greatly, especially with the record function do he can hear himself back. Only suggestion would be to make the record and play buttons bigger for little hands to find. He'll often try to hear it back and miss the button, then moved onto the next word.

Phonics galore. Fantastic app. Only suggestion would be to add a hide function. This way the educator can select the focus areas for the child and/or limit the selections available. I don't wish to delete anything as it is all useful. Well done!

Fantastic a student must have!!!. Fantastic great app must have for all first readers to make sense of sounds in words. So invaluable should be at all schools.

A great find!. A fabulous teaching app for phonics, spelling and reading. Especially useful for guided literacy sessions and 1:1 assistance are - The ability to highlight / remove highlight of phonic pattern - the arrangement of words in phonic/ families - the ability to change font (especially for a,g print issues) - the ability to re-record over the given American pronunciation: this means we can make it phonetically accurate for our region and makes it a truly usable on an international scale. Congratulations for this feature! - the ability to edit/change the words to suit your students: another great feature! Highly recommended for primary school, ESL Classes, learning support teachers, adult literacy classes, home schooling parents and speech/ language specialists.

Great. Great app. It would good to be able to sort or group the pages/sounds.

Great app. No condescending gimmicks, just the essentials. Highlighted common sounds, spoken words, groupings of words based on spelling and phonetic. My children are learning a lot from this. My eldest child struggles with encoding/decoding - and he's made great inroads in 1 week. Re: not for the children comment? Which part of "bulldust" don't you understand?

Great to align to Words their Way spelling program.. The children particularly enjoy recording each word into a sentence. The record button is a little small for some students, so they sometimes advance to the next word by accident.

Good app!. Overall this app is great. The only change I would like to see is to be able to change the accent. I'm from Australia so would prefer an Aussie accent.

Game is hopeless. While the word lists are ok - there are some really big words for learner readers - the game is terrible. The word spoken is not even shown and you can choose the wrong word and it says, 'that's correct'. You couldn't use it with a learner like this

Great resource with some issues. I love the app for what it’s designed to do. I am having trouble with the recorder. Playback is either faint or non existent and there are no volume options within the app to speak to why this would be happening on a device set to full volume. Also the app support link just sends me to join or download more apps which is why I’m posting here. Keep up the good work and please work on an update

Great for speech therapy. I have only used this app a couple of times but I can see that we are going to get a lot of use out of it. My 4 yo son goes to speech therapy and this app will compliment our sessions quite well. I am currently re-recording the sounds we're working on as I don't want him to have an American accent!

Never been able to use. Have never been able to use the app. I have sound but when I try recording voice then play I hear nothing. Have tried resetting app but still nothing.

Educator impressed with this terrific app. I'm a retired professor working with my six year old granddaughter and this is clearly a superior educational tool. So many apps have a hidden commercial motive. I'd give this a ten out of ten. My congratulations to the developers. Superb!!!!

Great. This is very useful tutoring an adult ESL student. Very easy to add / edit words in each list. Would be even better if there was an option to mix up words from selected phoneme lists.

Great phonics practice. This is exactly what I was looking for. My son is a good reader, but it never hurts to practice a bit extra! This has more variations than you could ever hope to make with actual tiles or printables, and all in one handy place.

The best phonics flash card app. This app comes with a great selection of phonics flash cards. I love the phonics highlighting which serves as a visual cue for my toddler. I also love that the clean interface - others I've seen are too "noisy" and distracts my kid easily.

Good VoiceOver,clear flash cards. It does need a "randomize" option, though, so that we can mix up the flash cards into different letter sound groups after we've mastered each sound. As a pure flash card style program, this is great.

Don’t waste your money. This app does nothing to encourage kids. It just goes through words and reads them out loud - that’s it! How is that learning? Will be getting a refund!

Great App!. An option to track proficiency would be useful as well as adding mixed-up flash cards after mastering a group of phonemes. It's a great tool to practice.

Upsetting. So I wanted my child to practise her words..,and as an aboriginal I was extremely offended and upset hearing her when she was doing the "aw" sounds and SQUAW came up. Too put it simply, bad choice and very offensive!

Excellent app. As as Speech-Language Pathologist, I use this versatile app with all types of clients including stroke survivors and foreign language speakers seeking to Americanize their dialects! It is really great! I'd like the ability to repeat the same word over and over when needed tho.

Awesome. This app has been helping me so much, I pick some sounds that are more difficult for me and practice them everyday. It's amazing the improvement I'm getting. I really like this and it's complete free!

One word...excellent. Love this app...would like to have a feature that highlights individual syllables when pressing the playback button. Maybe it's on a future version? :-)

No game, just cards. My daughter enjoyed the novelty of recording her voice and hearing her pronunciation of words, but all novelty wears off. She has not touched this app in over 6 months. While I could go into settings to adjust the number of multiple choice answers for a game, I could not play a game or find anything but the flash card sets. No wonder why she quit going to this app.

Great app!. Perfect phonics app for all school age children. I use at home with my granddaughter and at school with my students. Flash card style practice with or without sound. No pics but, plenty of words, words, words. This app gave me more than I expected!!!

VERY good app. BUT. The mic isn't working so I can't record new words, only write them. It would also be great to add the following features. - be able to customize the color of the highlight (I do that to help them notice the next vowel) - Be able to change the font. - be able to choose an option in which the font, order and color changes every timeso small children don't get bored easily. Great potential and an awesome timesaver. Unfortunately without the mic I HAVE to be there and read the words aloud.

Great app. English is my second language, I have benefited from this app to pronounce the sounds that I have difficulty. If this app has pictures, I would benefit from it even more. (I prefer to turn on the sounds when needed)

Definite problems. I checked out the game section where it will say a word then have the child pick the word out of 6 words, half the time the word was not even there, making a right choice impossible. Definitely not designed by a phonics genius. Otherwise it can be a valuable app for the other sections.

Volunteer tutor. This has been so helpful in my tutoring group. It makes it fun learning the word lists. Second language students benefit from hearing the words. Great app.

Phonics Grows Up. One of the few apps that deals with phonics beyond the introductory or primary grades. I'm using it to help a young man with an LD prepare for his highschool equivalency exam. Drilling may not be great for some, but for an adult who wants to get grounded in phonics and what letter combinations make what sounds--so far this is it.

Lots of bang for your buck. This app saves me a tremendous amount of time. People who write negative reviews because the app wasn't what they were looking for are just plain rude. This app is a very generous effort by these folks. Thank you.

Phonics genius. I love this app!!! It is so easy to use. I can customize it for individual students or for small groups. I've even made high frequency word flash cards just because this app is so easy to use!!

just what i needed. it is so hard to come up with new ways to teach phonics to children. This app is fun and my children love to use it.

Phonics Flash. Great app to help learn phonics. It gives the different spellings of the sound, you can hear it pronounced correctly, and can record yourself so you can hear how you are saying the word. The best part is it's FREE!

Fantastic. Very good app for phonics rules. It offers game mode and practice of a multitude of phonics rules. Great as flashcards! Many options that allow you to customize to meet your needs.

Great app. My daughter started using this app at the age of 3. She had a knack for annunciating, spelling and pronouncing words. Although she soon grew weary of it because of her abilities, I would most certainly recommend it for any child. Especially, parents with accents.

Please fix record ability of the microphone function.. Love the app, but record function no longer works. It's much better when kids can listen to themselves read each word.

Excellent!. I love this app for the combination of sounds that the English language has to teach new readers. I am spending time with my 5 and 6 year old grandsons teaching these sounds! And it is fun for them!

SpEd Teach. Fantastic. I use it daily. Sometimes it freezes up, but always come through n the end. What a great way to introduce and review letter sounds!

Good rhyming. I like this app as a rhyming game but found it too advance for my four year old. It did not keep her attention for very long. Maybe you should add in a reward system like sticker collection or something. Love all your other apps!

Fabulous for English students. English is my second language. Often, I have pronunciation issues. This App is a dream which comes true. It helps me a lot. I encourage all students around the world to download it.

Works well for unusual reading problems. My child can easily intuit large words but has a hard time seeing the components and applying to new words. This has increased her vocabulary as well as helped her understand sound components.

Great help tool. This has been the best aid in getting phonics practice for my son. There is a huge list of words that are chosen by easy buttons by blend or letter combinations. I can pull out my phone every time we are in the car and he can practice reading words. Super!

Pronunciations are okay. Tons of decks!! I like that each deck has many cards to choose from. I have some disagreements on some of the pronunciations though. The overall layout is rather digestible for students who are sight readers and have difficulty with the phonemic awareness side of learning to read.

Very Thorough!. A very thorough app, it includes Australian, British, and U.S. spellings, graded sight words, and many helpful arrangement and customization options. I use it nearly every day as a special ed student aide, but it is a great vocabulary and pronunciation tool for any student.

Phonics geniou. I like this app but the words should be easier...maybe grade the words for k through 6th grade. Some f these words a first grader would not know. It's can be a good app and I'll use it with higher level kids but not with younger ones. Also I could not get the font size to change. This is important as i work with visually handicapped kids.

Amazing App!. Best Educational App I have downloaded for my 5yr old son who has a Speech delay. I was able to create my own flash cards and add my voice. I high recommend it especially if you have a children who has a developmental delay. I also use this app at work with kids 5-7yrs old.

WOW!. Incredible resource to use during guided reading or skill groups on a daily basis. I know many teachers who use it regularly and simply LOVE it!! Hoping you create more apps like this especially since it is FREE!!!

Great flexibility!. I am raising my child bilingual. I create my own cards for Spanish sounds. I am still learning the ins and outs of the app. I hope I can make flashcard stacks for specific purposes. This is a great tool for all ages. I am also a Leaning Specialist and a tool like this can be very helpful to strengthen phonemic awareness for anybody.

Ok but not perfect. I use this app with students I tutor. While it is helpful, it has many non phonetic words that don't belong where they have been placed. I would happily share the mistakes with the app writers if requested. Could be so much more useful.

I use this app for literacy interventions. This is a great app for teaching struggling readers phonics skills. I also love that you can customize the lists and make your own. That customization process could be streamlined but otherwise this is a great app for education professionals and parents.

Great selection of words. This app has the largest, most assorted selection of words I have seen. It allows the parent to choose the phonics, on which to work. The child can record themselves saying the words. We like this a lot.

Phonics genius. I really like this app because it gives a clear pronunciation of sounds in words!

Awesome applications. I am very happy with this application, and my DHH students love it too. They get so excited when I pull my IPad and I open this application for them to "play". Very helpful for anyone who is learning to voice words, even for autistic high school kids, and/or any type of Language/Speech impairment.

Simple and best. Free of peacock feathers and does one thing well. An improvement would be to give option to child to sound the word so that child can verify own pronunciation.

Gerry g. Very nice app, with such a large volume of words to practice specific sounds combination and check your spelling. It would be nice if there were rules that was a part of the apt that would indicate when certain combination are used! Otherwise a great app.
