Flashnote Derby App Reviews
Flashnote Derby App Description & Overview
What is flashnote derby app? Flashnote Derby is a fun, effective way for kids to learn and practice reading music notes.
Perfect for piano, guitar, band, orchestra, and general music students, this teacher-created app turns note recognition into an engaging game that works equally well at home or in music lessons.
————
Race to Learn Music Notes
Each race is a fast-paced challenge: identify notes correctly to speed your horse toward the finish line. Missed or slow answers allow the other horses to catch up.
After each round, students can review the notes they missed—turning every race into a meaningful learning opportunity.
————
New! Practice Mode (No Timer, No Stress)
Students can now choose a relaxed 'practice mode' with unlimited time for each note.
Perfect for beginners, this mode builds accuracy and confidence before racing competitively.
————
Multiple Ways to Answer
Players can answer flashcards in a variety of of ways:
•Play the note on an any instrument. Flashnote Derby will hear and understand what you play. (Works with transposing instruments too!)
•Use a MIDI instrument
•Tap on-screen letter names
•Or play notes on the on-screen piano keyboard
————
Fully Customizable for Any Student
Tailor each drill to match your student’s level:
•Treble, bass, alto, or tenor clef
•Select specific note ranges or individual notes
•Add sharps, flats, or full key signatures
•Adjust time limits (or remove them entirely in Practice Mode)
•Expand difficulty all the way up to five-and-a-half ledger lines above and below the staff.
As skills grow, you can increase the challenge. Higher difficulty earns higher scores—keeping students motivated.
————
Multiple themes keeps practice fresh.
In addition to the classic horse race, students can take flight with the whimsical Pretty Pegasus course, blast through an arcade-style space challenge in Ecliptic Encounter, or switch to the seasonal Reindeer Race during the holidays.
————
Built for Teachers, Loved by Students
Flashnote Derby is designed to fit easily into lessons:
•Quick to set-up and perfect for a 1–2 minute warm-up
•Send homework assignments directly to students
•Track progress automatically
•See which notes need more review
Teachers see real improvement. Students stay engaged. Parents appreciate the progress.

Flashnote Derby Comments & Reviews 2026
Great!. I just discovered the informational videos and that I can tack student progress with this app! I can’t wait to try out all these features with my students.
Emailing Presets Stopped Working. So disappointed that I can no longer email preset practices to students which was the main reason I bought the app and asked parents to buy the app. I’ve tried logging out, uninstalling the app, etc but nothing fixes it. The buttons to select “send the preset” or “cancel” do not respond when selected. I did email the developer but haven’t gotten a response.
Answer keyboard should customizable. It is frustrating for a student to name a note and have to pick a note on the keyboard that is on the wrong registration of the keyboard. The eye is not learning to think horizontally. This is true for all answer choices. Otherwise it is an ok app and children enjoy it. I have answer direct on the piano and I supply the answer to compensate for this error.
Love it!. I use this a LOT with my piano students. I am delighted with the new option of playing the notes on the piano instead of tapping them on the screen. This is my favorite feature! Thanks for adding that. I have noticed sometimes it doesn't give an "x" if the wrong note is played. My student hit a Bb a couple of times instead of a B, and it allowed her to try again and get it right. I would prefer an "x" first time, but apart from that it's a wonderful upgrade. Keep up the good work!
Great Potential. I agree with another reviewer who pointed that the app “boos” when they miss a note. Saying “awww” with the ability to keep trying until you get it correct. Also, I find the website lacking severely in showing you how the app looks on the student end. Sending and creating a drill is not clear. You also can’t ask questions on the site. Keep trying, because I like it otherwise.
Great concept. Reward system could use improvement!. I was excited to find this app to help my 4 year old daughter read notes better. She plays the piano and is beginning to read notes, but isn't fluent yet, so I thought this app might help. (She reads on a 3rd grade level, so I think she is capable of learning how to read notes.) Most kid apps we have are encouraging and use positive reinforcement. If you miss a question, you are encouraged to try again, and when you get it right, there's some sort of positive reinforcement. However, in this app, if you answer incorrectly, you hear "boo" sounds and unless you get all questions right, you lose and a sad tune is played. It's not encouraging at all and makes her not want to try again. If this was fixed, it would be a great app. But not as is.
Great app for kids and Adults too. Love this app. I use it every night with my kids. Very easy to use and fun too. Makes learning fun the whole time.
Flashnote Derby. What a great app! I am a piano teacher and I am going to use this with my students this fall. I love the way you can customize what notes will be used in each race and how fast the races are run. We need more music learning apps like this one. Thanks
Educational AND fun. Very good app! The positives: As a teacher, I love that I can tailor the parameters to what a student knows and/or needs to work on. I have used it in a few lessons already and I've seen clear improvement after a few rounds. Having the ability to email the settings to the student is a feature I would never have imagined but have already used. The "derby" itself is fun and the graphics are pretty good. You can set it to letter names, piano keys, or both. The negatives: the booing has got to go. I would never "boo" a student for making a mistake, and although older students might find it funny, it's way too harsh for young kids. This would be a 5-star review if not for the booing! Suggestions: I would like to see the treble and bass clefs extended out by an octave. I could see adding an alto clef option at some point. Finally, why isn't there an option for the jockey to be a girl??
Amazing App for teaching young ones!. I'm teaching my 5yr old twin kids how to read music and this has absolutely been the best app to engage them.
Extremely useful application.. I would like to see four additional lessons, in the next version, that will provide exercise drills on both treble and base clef combined.
Music Teacher. This is hands down the best note naming app. It was worth every cent. I used it with my band students at school to help them learn the note names and with my beginning piano students at home. The best part about this app is being able to choose exactly what notes to quiz the student on. I haven't seen any other app that lets me do that. Highly Recommended!
Good for drills. I bought this app to use with my piano students. Overall they like the app. It has cute graphics that appeal to children. My only complaint is that I would like for there to be a two octave span on my iPad. My kids found it confusing when F5 in the treble clef had to be played at F4 in the app when doing the treble line drill for instance. I could see them wanting to press a key an octave above the keyboard display (where the note actually resides). I don't use the keyboard since it is causing them confusion.
Great app!!. This app has really been helping my daughter learn to read notes. We use this along with her piano lessons. Plus I'm trying to learn some too along the way. It's the pre-made lessons that really work for us. We'd love to have more too!!
Just what I was looking for!. Great app! I was looking for a fun way for my five year old to learn his piano notes. I looked through many apps, and this was exactly what I wanted.
Excellent. I'm 48 and just learning to read music. I've tried other flash card apps but this simple one packs in all the versatility and repetition needed to really memorize those notes.
Play It!!!. If you are a student learning music or just a little rusty on your notes, this is the game to get! It helps you learn notes and is simple enough to figure everything out!!!
Great.. I am very pleased. The difficulty is easily adjusted and you can easily focus on specific notes. My younger children really like it.
Well made app. As a parent of three boys and a piano teacher myself, I am very happy with this app. Customization is perfect, and video lessons are a nice addition. Thanks for a quality app.
Low instruments don’t work. Tried playing this game with bassoon students today. The note recognition didn’t work when they were playing the correct octave, but when I started playing an octave above it worked.
Great way to learn notes.. I've known every good boy does fine since I was six, but this is the first time I've ever been able to immediately play a note just by looking at it. Very good app.
Outstanding. Well constructed app, clear and simple. Customize the flash cards for the notes that your class is working on makes note-naming easy and fun! My students 4-8 LOVE to try to beat their friends high scores!
Flash note derby. We love this app!! Kids are learning piano and its such a fun and easy way to learn to read music. I grew up playing only treble clef on flute and now learning bass clef for piano - not sure if the kids enjoy it more than me or not!
Immediate results!. After only a few days u saw an improvement in my sins piano playing. The intense reviewing with notes and key options made rehearsing his note recognition fun. Great app and lessons
Setting the speed. I can no longer choose a speed or choose the number of flash cards. What happened? It used to work.....when I touch walk or gallop nothing happens.
Bravo!. As a music teacher, I search high and low for tools to make learning fun. This app is one of the best tools I have ever had. I have been using it already in just the last few days with my elementary age students, with great success. This program is simple, easy to figure out, and extremely effective. The students are a little resistant to using it at first, because they know it is supposed to help them learn. But after the first few "races," they are hooked and really enjoy playing the game. This app gets even better though: the videos are fantastic. For instance, I could not ask for a better video for teaching how to read guide notes. The only improvement I could possibly ask for in this app is an additional game that allows students to press a key on the keyboard that corresponds to the note they are reading. But as far as learning just the names of the notes goes, this app is perfect.
Awesome!. This app is exactly what I was looking for for a quick way to learn to read music. I love that you can handpick the notes you want to be quizzed on. The only improvements I can think of would be to have a larger keyboard option on the ipad app so that you can differentiate between middle c and the other c's, etc and also the option to be quizzed on sharps and flats. Still an awesome app though and a great resource!
Unnecessarily violent. You win the space race -“Ecliptic Encounter” by shooting missiles into the opposing ship until it explodes. Really?? This is a tool for little kids. Why can’t the ships just...race? I can’t let my kids use this.
Some big developmental flaws. This app was recommended by my 8yo's piano teacher. I could be great, but he was quickly frustrated with it. The cheering when he gets a correct answer is good, but does there really have to be a loud "awwww!" or, even worse, "booooo!" for a wrong answer? Also, the letter choices are in a font that can be confusing for young children: namely the D can be easily confused with a lowercase A, flipped right to left (but that is lost on many children at this age). Simple block letters would be a more appropriate choice. Once we straightened out which letter was which and turned the sound off, it went better, but that was rather too late.
More themes?. So, I am asking if you could add more themes. Maybe some stuff like other animal races? Such as owls, dolphins, huskies, bunnies, and some other stuff. Please respond because I feel it has been a long time since an update, but it is still a great app for children to learn how to note read.
Good app. I'm an adult learning to play the piano, this app has helped me learn the keys, it's way better than flash cards.
Great teaching tool. I teach piano and the kids love it. Best part is being able to set notes you want on quiz without restrictions.
Great BUT. This a great app that has made piano lessons more fun for my students. I especially love the option to play the instrument. SUGGESTION: Have an option with no timer or race, just answering the notes, as some kids don’t do well being timed.
Happy to pay for more themes!!. My students LOVE this app! They ask me for it every lesson. And often ask when they will come out with more Themes. Please - I’d be happy to pay for more themes! Thank you for creating this app. Piano teachers dream come true!
Great App for Kids. This is a simple and fun app for children. I like that every aspect of the game can be customized: speed, number of questions, and the notes. It's great for beginners. The positive reinforcement is good and it is nice that any incorrect answers are reviewed. And you can't beat the price! I really think this is a great tool. Thoughts of an 8-Year Old: I like Flashnote Derby because it helps me learn my notes. I started out slow with just a few notes and after I did good on those, I added more. Then I added notes for both hands and that was a little harder.
I can only give the app one star because it won’t open. After the most recent update my version won’t update. I have an iPad Pro and have not received any customer support.
The best in class!. Timely updates and great support. The only note reading game with style and polish! All my students love it!
Glitches. Flashnote Derby is a great way for children to practice note reading. The pacing allows children to think before they answer and it records progress. However, the free teacher features are frustrating when you can’t access them. The system suddenly doesn’t seem to recognize my password and I can’t reset it myself . I’ve tried with several accounts and emailed the developer three times with no response or resolution.
It's Great!. Does what it says it does and a few unexpected bonuses! My kids love it and I enjoyed playing it too.
Exciting way to practice flashcards!. My students love this app! It’s so much more fun than the old flashcards. My own 3 kids fight over who gets to do it next and they love competing to see who gets the best score!
Fantastic. It helps with both note and keyboard recognition/speed. I have searched and searched for this one!!!! Fun and effective. Thrilled!
Great for Learning notes. My seven year old son enjoys playing this app! His piano teacher actually assigned it to him as part of his daily piano practicing. It is easy to use and you can specify which notes to practice.
Luke Bartolomeo does not respond!. I am a teacher. I've been using this app for several years after other teachers highly recommended it. The app itself is good for the most part, but I've had some issues that are not working for my studio. I started having issues with being unable to set a master device and clone my other devices. Although Luke followed up to my initial request, asking if I am logged in, when I answered his questions to explain this issue is not on my end as a user not being logged in, he never responded despite multiple emails. In good conscience, I can not recommend this to my students when the app developer is admittedly MIA. I will use other apps instead. I will update IF the developer ever fixes this and responds to my emails.
Suggestion. I really enjoyed the lessons as well as the games. I wish you had one overall review & more importantly game at the end of lesson 4 in each group that summarized/combined all 4 lessons.
Increases note naming speed. My three kids all love it (ages 4, 7, 9), has improved their note identification speed.
Simple app that kids really like. I was really surprised how much my piano students like this app. It's really just flash cards with sound effects but they love playing it. Some of them liked it enough to ask their parents to buy it; at the very least I get no argument about practicing our letter names. Now maybe they'll write an app that works on steps and skips with the same game engine.
Great App!. As a piano teacher and parent, this is a great application to help learn notes on the piano. My only recommendation would be to have two octaves for the notes that fall below or above the staff.
No updates for years, can’t do what I want. I can’t use an external audio interface with this; it’s too buggy. I want my students to be able to silently practice their notes on guitar, and I can’t do that. No updates for 4 years means I doubt this or any future bugs will be fixed. This product may be near end-of-life. EDIT: website says last update was nov. 2017. Looks like two minor updates since then, the last being 2019.
Excellent. My piano student were exceedingly excited with the new Reindeer theme. This little app holds their attention and enthusiasm much better than regular "analog" flash cards. Would like some additional features, like personalized high scores for multiple users. This would add some motivation
Space race. My students LOVE the space race. It’s very exciting for them and keeps them trying to learn notes so they can win!

Note Racing Game. Absolutely fantastic! Great fun learning notes!
Flashnote. Amazing App…. 😘
Flash note. This is a such a great game and I have learnt so much!!!
Perfect for learning the musical staff. Great app! I use this in private & group sessions with my students and they love it. It’s been a big help in my group lessons, and there are a lot of different levels available. Perfect for any instrument also, as it offers all 4 clefs.
Why it doesn’t share with the family even family sharing is on?. Hi, have send this question before, can you help us? our family sharing is on, and you support family sharing. why is it continue to ask us to pay on kid’s ipad? many thanks.
App not working. I have paid and downloaded the app but whenever I open it it just brings up a white screen then automatically closes itself.
Disappointing. Pretty counter intuitive that the actual gameplay doesn’t teach the note names of the staff, but they have to be learnt from some very dry 7-minute videos hidden in the settings menu. Even then, the notes aren’t sung or played so there’s no connection between the visual and the aural, a real basic music ed principle. Was hoping for the price that it would have levels for progressive advancement and rewards to encourage children to learn, but it’s very bare bones and as my 5 year old said, “Boring”. Wouldn’t be so upset by it if I hadn’t paid $8 for it when it’s worse than most $2 apps. Going to ask for a refund.
Valuable classroom app. My students love this app. The new options are appreciated and many thanks for the Christmas theme, nice thought!
Better than the rest. This app offers it all - letter names, do re mi, totally customisable notes to test. It’s absolutely brilliant and will be recommending to all my students.
Bad. Very bad. :(
Pretty boring app with nothing much. Anyone else forced to play this by their piano teacher?
Better than flash cards!. Fantastic app! Love that you can choose the notes to test. Highly recommended to any beginner student and all teachers.
Pretty cool!!. I love this app, it gives you an amazing note reading confidants boost. I would rate this four out of five stars!! (Download now)
Been forced to play flash note :(. My piano teacher makes me use this all the time :( it works but I still don’t like it :,(
App drops out.... My son plays for awhile and then shuts down, very annoying, would give it 5 stars. My tablet 6th gen apple tablet is updated so this can’t be the issue...Kind regards Shayne

The best music flash card app for students of all levels. I purchased this app for my piano group students & I end up using it all the time for my private piano students too. In the group setting, we race as a team. We sit around the iPad & the students take turns naming the notes. It is such a hit that they usually ask for it at every lesson. In a private lesson, I usually start lessons with a quick round of 10 or 20 flash cards while I open notebooks & generally get myself situated. I love that I can select exactly the notes that I want to drill & I can even email them to my students. The students love playing games to review their notes. The students love the reindeer background for the game. It would be great to have a Valentines one or an Easter one too (the kids would be so excited!) One little problem I have with the app is the "you lose" message & wah, wah, wah music at the end if you don't beat the other horse. My beginners use the slowest setting (walk) but often just can't beat the other horse. Maybe "good try" instead? So far, I find it most appealing to the under-12 crowd, though if you were to add an option of alto & tenor clefs, I'd definitely find a use for it with my intermediate & advanced theory teenagers :) I've tried several apps but this is definitely my go-to app for note-naming flash cards. I recommend this to all my under-10 students and recommend it as a "must-have" app for any music teacher.
Great app for learning lines and spaces!!!. I am a piano teacher and currently use this app with my daughter and my students too. Their note reading is improving weekly!! Easy to select which notes we're focusing on. Can also easily flip between naming notes by letter that are found on the staff to deciding where played on the keyboard. Highly recommend this app!!
Great app!. The app is cute! In the next version if they could play a sound of the notes then it would be great.
Doesn’t fit right on apple screen. Doesn’t fit right on the screen
AMAZING!!!. My piano students LOVE this, and it’s so fun to be able to switch between the unicorns and spaceships etc. Can’t wait for these guys to come out with more games!
Great. Sweet app it’s awsome! But the licensing feature is pretty terrible.
Great App. For today's connected children, this is a great App that keeps their interest. I recommend to all my students! Thanks! Looking forward to your next App. My suggestion would be Rhythm Race
Horrible. Bad

Unusable. Hello: this is not accessible by my students. When I send it to them, there is a message that says “Safari will not support it.” Could you please help. I have a lot of students, Android and Apple, and no one can open it. Thanks!
I like this app. This is the first app I bought. This is a great app. I would recommend it
Easy to Use. Works as advertised. Easy to use.
Awesome tool!. This app is a HUGE help! I use it and so do the kids now!
Great!!!. This app is great!! It's a must buy for all piano students no matter what age!!
Fun note naming game!. Thank you for taking away the booing sounds! My students love this game!
Add alto clef please. This is a great product . I use this in lessons with beginning students. Please add alto clef!
I love this app. I love this app it helps me learn notes and it seems like a game 🎶✌🏻💖
Please help. Videos say they're loading, but then time out back to flashnote derby screen
Great app. I have a hard time memorizing notes. This app saved the day!
Fun. Kids love it. The Christmas reindeer are super cute.
Almost good. I got this to help a child review notes. The first time, she got 8/10 right, and the game makes noises like she lost/did a bad job. Totally threw her off. A big disappointment.
Great app!. Great way for kids to learn notes!
It boos if you get it wrong. It's for kids and it boos you if you get too many wrong. I would not let my child play with that!
Teacher. Terrible App.
.. Excellent way to learn to read music.
Awesome App. This app makes it so fun to learn.
Great for the dreaded!. My son hates practicing his flashcards, but this little game makes it fun and motivating for him to do it.
AWESOME APP!. Wonderful app!! Helps me learn music.
Great app. My son learned the treble clef in just 3 days!
Note games. Works great! I am a music teacher and got it for my kids. Highly recommended.
Fun note drill. My students really enjoy playing this app!
Great game. My students love playing this game. The only thing that they would like changed is the letter names to start with "C" instead of "A". This is a must have game.
