Gauss Field Looper App Description & Overview

What is gauss field looper app? Co-designed with Berlin-based electronic musician Hainbach, Gauss brings the oldschool tape-looping art form to mobile devices. This creative field looper works both standalone and as an Audio Unit effect plugin and puts the possibilities of using looped tapes in your hands. Without the need for scissors.

Like real tape loops Gauss takes you off the grid of your DAW: you can adjust tape speed and direction, even during recording. The flow of your loops will drift organically as the tape follows its own cyclical timeline.

Use overdub, or even multiple instances of the Audio Unit plugin, to create multi-layered ever changing sonic palettes.

We want this app to be a celebration of digital audio technology, so when audio quality is degraded it will do so in a pleasingly crunchy digital way. For example, recording on low tape speeds will give you longer recording time, but at the cost (or pleasure) of a distinctively lower recording quality. So Gauss mimics the behaviour - not the sound - of magnetic tape.

Set the length of the tape, record and overdub your audio, play around with tape speeds; Gauss captures the essence of two ends of tape stuck together in all its unsynchronised, free-running glory. There's even a unique built-in 4-step polyrhythmic sequencer for sequencing tape-speed changes.

- designed as a standalone field recorder and an Audio Unit effect plugin (AUv3) in one package
- universal app: plugin and standalone work on all iDevices, iOS11 and higher
- variable tape speed; seamlessly change direction and speed during playback or recording
- 4-step sequencer lets you trigger (polyrhythmic) tape-speed changes in sync with your host tempo
- variable inertia for the tape drive motors (from instant to very slow speed changes)
- built-in multi-mode filter with LFO modulation
- delay effect with optional host-sync mode
- “1989” mode uses a special 8 bit/11KHz tape head for a last-century vintage digital sound
- 45 seconds maximum loop size at 1x speed, proportionally longer at lower speeds (.e.g 90 seconds at half speed, etc.)
- overdub at any speed or tape direction
- plugin supports global cross-host preset handling (requires iOS13+, compatible AUv3 host)

Half speed ist best speed. Warbly tape goodness.. Herr Hainbach and Bram! Winning combination! The 1989 setting sounds like a broken dictaphone. I’m guessing that is intentional. My only gripe would be to be able to adjust the amount of crust on that setting. Otherwise a fantastic and intuitive app, Gents. Well done.

You can get some really creative stuff going with this.. The only things I would add/change is to have monitoring on in the default state. It’s the only effect that I have that cuts the audio signal by default when added to an audio chain. I would also like to see the ability to trigger recording when pressing play on the host.

I can’t wait to sample the world out side. Thanks Hainbach and friends ! The sequencer/ looper thing is an awesome game changer! Peace Christo👽

Great buy why can’t you load loops in standalone?. This app is killer as an audio unit in AUM but why is there no simple way to load loops from AudioShare or another method in standalone? If this is some “purist” decision to only serve as a field recorder it’s a bit ridiculous….

Thanks for the wonderful tool Bram!. I love Gauss it’s such an amazing app... the UI is also very beautiful, cheers on the amazing design in general. I do have one thing to say: I remember when Gauss launched, recording something inside of a host such as AUM and then lowering the tempo, would directly affect the playback speed of the recording. This is no longer the case! Recordings stay at the speed they were originally recorded even if the tempo changes. I can understand this being a personal preference, but I was of the impression that that was the intended behavior wasn’t it? That was fantastic! It made a lot of sense for the tempo to affect playback speed of the Gauss instances. I hope you can re-add this feature at least as an option in the future, I found it to be infinitely convenient so I am quite surprised to see it gone. Hopefully you’ll consider it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✔️

Lost in Space. *sigh* another 5-star review for a Bram Bos app. I’ll just say the reason I love Gauss so much is its simple elegance. Bram and Heinbach have crafted an instrument that really has just what you need and nothing extraneous. Really quick to dive in when inspiration strikes, and light enough to layer up multiple instances in AUM. Pair it with all your favorite apps, I like Koala Sampler and Kosmonaut.

Almost perfect. Really creative and inspiring little looper, though the inability to load samples in to it is puzzling. When you click on “load a loop” you see demo loops you can play with, while the “user loops” section is blank. However I don’t see anywhere in the app where you can import sound files. I also tried navigating to the Gauss folder in my iPhone (using the files app) and adding MP3s to the “loop” folder, but that doesn’t make them appear in the app either. Hopefully this is something they add in the future.

Cool app - UI uselessly small on iPhone. Really like what this app does. Pretty intuitive and satisfying. But the UI is so irritatingly small that it seems rolling this out on tablets-only would have made more sense. It’s 4 years old so I can only imagine it hasn’t had enough adoption to put time into another UI update. Bummer. Could see this as a bonus auxiliary tool in live sets but not as it is now.

Well-designed but not for me. Very excited to try this one out but find it to be a let down. Perhaps it is suited towards a very narrow range of music style or maybe I haven’t learned how to use it well enough.

Absolutely love this app. Really opens up a world of new possibilities!

Flutter Some More Warble, Bitte.. You can finally retire your multi tape speed, overdubbable(? Not multitrack, which is fine) dictaphone. Not that you were ever able to synch sequence a magnetic tape or fine tune how much it warbles or the intensity and speed of fluttering (filter cutoff and modulation) and I have never heard an analog tape machine come to an adjustable speed stop so that it may reverse the direction it was traveling without having the capstan blow and pop off into the air like a Russian tank. Like most of these apps, you don’t need much to get started and messing with the provided preset loops will teach you more hands on than any documentation. I’m sure there is a way to improve this little beast, but at the moment I have been using it mostly standalone for a few months and I can’t think of anything that would add to it. Maybe something that would over-complicate it, but nothing to improve it.

Essential Creative Tool. One reason I love app on the iPad, are the non conventional ways you can compose music, in a tactile and fun way. Gauss hit the nail on the head with instant sound manipulation at your fingertips, as it you have a physical looper. The interface is ideal for anyone who instantly want to capture audio and become Halim El-Dabh or DeliaDerbyshire for an exploration into tape techniques. Also it works so well with other apps, within Audiobus or AUM as well as external recording of hardware (with iOS interface) Thank you for these tools. - King Britt

Works Great! Just one problem…. This is an absolutely fantastic tape loop emulator. However whenever I plug my phone to an external output, the loops will either no longer play or the control interface just goes blank.

Funky Looper. The app is perfect for all of your off kilter looping needs. You can do all sorts of transformations of your source audio from subtle to extreme. Nice straight forward GUI with all of the controls at your fingertips. Shape the sound frequencies and rhythms. You can record sessions as presets in the AU. Resampling the output of your Gauss sessions is great when you can have a source instance of Gauss followed by an effects chain and another instance of Gauss where you record the output. After creating the recording, save it as a preset and change the audio source Gauss to the preset you just saved and reset the instance of Gauss for recording again (I have a couple of presets for my fav recording setups). Experiment with iterations of this to get your creative juices flowing. The developer is in the process of exposing the transport AU parameters for even more MIDI based fun. I will be using this app a lot.

Great app. I just wish it was a plugin.. I like this, but dealing with Apple’s walled garden when getting sounds in/out of my iPad is frustrating. I have a pretty killer recording setup but its all windows, so I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get the audio onto my setup. This would be a killer VST3 plugin. I could see easily dropping $30 - $40 on this so I can run it in Ableton or Reaper. Imagine having multiple tracks of Gauss simultaneously running! Anyway its a great app its just feels like a toy because of the limitations of Apple’s ecosystem.

Creative options!. So much you can do with this!

Huge update. Sample import makes this already great app 10x as great.

Super intuitive and versatile field recorder!. I’ll buy anything with a Hainbach endorsement and yet again I am not disappointed. There aren’t many functional apps for tapeheads so I am truly psyched about this! I just wanted to *echo* what another reviewer said about adding a visual waveform/sample info to the interface at some stage!

Not working on iOS 14.1. Looks like a brilliant app on demo but doesn’t work. I’ll revise my rating when it does. I’m sure it’s a glitch.

Sonic dreams. Awesome app does everything you want from a looper and has a sequencer - which is super cool. Would like to see more tape years and types - like 1980, 69, wire tape etc and some control over the grunge. And would love an easy access button to where the sessions folder is. Love it!

Perfect for what I need!. I realize this was just released but I’ve been looking for a VERY long time for something I could tinker with while I am at work or on the go. This is precisely what I needed. Field recording and tape loops, what’s not to love!! Awesome work guys!

Beware of, but do not fear the feedback. UI is brilliant, nothing to get lost in but your own exploration. Well done, BramHain.

Great for iphone. awesome little lofi effects sampler that mimics tape. pretty neat

Headphones Not Working. I cant use my bluetooth headphones with the app even though connected. May be a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Also USB audio does not work. Disappointing, I was hoping this would be more of a finished app

Love it! Two of my favorites come together. Fabulous. Deep. Love it. Feature request: more visual feedback of the waveform, during monitoring and looped playback. Looking forward to experimenting with it over the weekend!

Pretty fun. Pretty fun messing with the stock loops and recording simple things with iphone mic. I’d like to be able to import loops and samples, mangle them in Gauss and export them. Please add Audioshare for importing and exporting on the next update!

No audio. The demo seemed really nice but it is not giving me audio on my iPhone 11pro running iOS 14.2 nor am I able to even see it in AUM. I know this will probably be fixed but it’s a bummer after spending $7

Instantly in love.. It feels like ages since inspiration has hit me like this. I should not be surprised. I suppose I am not, more so comfortably myself again. Bram Bos lightweight software to the rescue. I was just thinking about you Bram Bos. Thank you for the love. I needed this. A beautiful collaboration

Fun. Interesting app. Now that it works now the app is a lot of fun.

When Time Becomes A Reshapeable Loop. All I know is that this looper is going to get a lot of mileage on my iPad. It's the first looper that syncs up with my brainwaves...and reshapes it in so many psychoactive ways...wow...talk about sonic teleportation to the power of HB 🙏🏼💕🔥

It gets it right. Tape/loop music has always been about discovery for me. We've had loopers for decades. We've had loopers in our pockets for years. This one is different where it counts: work flow. Within minutes of launching the app I was building loops, capturing performances, sharing the recordings, and walking around the house recording stuff like it was the first time again. You can touch you sounds. You can play with time. This app makes the capturing, manipulation, and utilization of sound a joy! Great app. If you get the concept of what this app suggests, you'll love this thing!

Loading file. Unique App. I (as with many) I have way too many Apps. Samplers galore. Gauss standing as a super experimental field recorder stands apart from the many create samplers out there. One thing Gauss is sorely missing ( and maybe I missed this option) is the capability to import your own pre recorded samples. Sure one can open it in Aum and route AudioShare to the App, but it would be nice to have an immediate load option to simplify the workflow. Broad midi implementation as well.Btw has anyone seen a tiny orange microdot to the far upper right. Given the sounds emitting from this thing microdot indeed.

Awesome stand alone.. AU?. Awesome app, only seems to work standalone for me. Already emailed the developer but wondering if anyone has come across this issue or found a fix. I can not get AUM (or Audiobus) to see it. It does not appear as an available AU or in inter app audio(IAA). Works beautifully standalone. Some things I tried/noticed that might help figure this out -I have tried restarting and reinstalling all apps involved (Gauss, AUM, Audiobus). - I have Ruismaker installed and it works fine in AUM -using an iPad 7th Gen and an iPhone 8+ both running iOS 14.2, both have the same issue.

iPad too?. i paid and installed it on my iphone and then went to install on my iPad and Apple is asking me to purchase again!

Boom. Another Bram Bos home run.

Seems to crash when I plug in an external mic. Can’t figure out what’s going on but when I plug and external mic into my iPad, the GUI disappears and I have to restart the app

Very useful sample manipulator. I'm still using this a lot, thanks for keeping it up to date and compatible with iOS

Amazing and musical.. Really really fun, and instantly musical. Definitely recommended! I have no complaints, but I do have a few feature requests: 1. I would love the ability to run multiple loops natively without using an audio unit host like AUM. I understand if it’s out of scope, but... would still be nice! :) 2. The ability to sequence it externally via midi would unlock some very fun things. Thinking a cc to change the main speed, reset to zero, and midi notes would change the relative speed. 3. If it could import audio files, that’d make it possible to work with existing field recordings Anyway! Great work!

One missing feature would make this a 5/5. Gauss is an incredible plug-in. You should definitely buy it. But… Why isn’t monitoring on by default?? Multiple online reviews have mentioned how annoying it is to have to switch it on every time you want to use the plugin. On should be the default behaviour. Other than that, this is just awesome.

Awesome app!. Crazy what can be done on a phone! Having a lot of fun with this but was just wondering if there could possibly be a feature implemented to count in when the recording begins, like the metronome on garageband. It’s great either way, but I would personally that feature extra convenient for seamless looping!

It’s sweet!. Great sounding effect and the developers are very responsive!
