Always a problem logging me in. Edit: The app has literally just stopped working, come on Valve, this is ridiculous. I like the app, it helps me talk to my Steam friends if I can’t do it through Discord, but I swear to god, this app does not work outside your home half the time. It needs a stable WiFi connection to work at all public WiFi or data simply will not do 80% of the time. I might as well just use my PC, this can’t be that hard of a fix, can it, Valve?

Absolute Garbage.. This is a worthless app. It never works properly and shouldn’t even exist. It was MUCH better when the chat was integrated into the main Steam app. I don’t know why they decided to isolate the chat into its own app, but it has been absolutely useless ever since they did. It hardly works. It never remembers my devices, and when trying to log in, it usually results in an error even though logging into the main steam app works fine.

Just Awful.. So where do I start with this app? When this app first came out years ago, I was happy I could at least send photos via Steam Mobile in a way. However, the app would constantly display the wrong time since last online for friends, and wouldn’t update that correctly (friend could be offline for 2 hours, but “Last Seen” would display over a day ago for example). Not a big, big issue, just a bit misleading, however it didn’t stop there. This app has gotten nothing but worse over the years, mainly because it’s barely updated, and has a variety of issues, and new issues love to manifest themselves over time. Over the course of 2023, I’ve stopped getting any and all notifications from the app, and yes, I have notifications enabled. I’ve checked my phone’s notifications settings, and the app’s settings, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t be working. Today (which is also my 26th birthday) was the final straw. It kept reverting my alias all on its own, and now chats don’t even update whatsoever. I have to actually close the app down completely if I get a message while I’m not in the app or even the same chat with a friend. Between the new buggy mobile app and this horrendous attempt to be like Facebook Messenger, you’re better off just talking to friends via Discord or whatever else you like to use. Sadly, if you have friends on Steam, this app is the only way to talk to them via mobile unless you have an alternative method of talking to them (again, like Discord).

Broken integration with steam app. For one, this should have been an update to the original steam app in the first place. And now that they’re separate, they’re not properly integrated. I still get notifications through the old steam app for chat messages and I can’t ever clear them out because chat doesn’t work on the old app. Opening store pages doesn’t open them in the steam app, it opens a safari window. And why haven’t they fixed the old, broken steam app that hasn’t been updated in two years?

Barely functional. Able to login once, but messages weren’t coming through, mine weren’t being sent and after one attempt to restart it, the app is completely unable to connect again even after multiple attempts to completely delete it and reinstall. The layout is awful - only designed for iPhone with no flexibility to adjust based on device display. I get that Steam doesn’t want to bother with Apple products - I don’t blame them - but if that’s the case it would be better to have nothing than this obviously 1/4 designed, abandoned app.

Easily one of the most broken apps ever.. If I could rate ZERO stars, I WOULD. This app exists to fill a gap that was already filled. The Steam Mobile app exists now to serve only as a Steam Guard authenticator, when several years ago it was a fully fledged mobile device Steam catalog where you could message your friends too. Clunky; yes. But it worked. I could message my Steam-only friends about CounterStrike games before I booted my computer up, and catch up with my long distance gamers, but now I have to add my whole friend list to Discord, which I only use sparingly (believe it or not), just to message them if they wanna play, if I’m on my way home from work this is a huge inconvenience to then have to sit down, boot up, load up steam, and then WAIT for a response, when my 40 minute commute and an app THAT WORKS could easily solve this. This Chat app won’t even get past logging me in, and even when it’s loading it just says failure loading (retry) on an infinite loop. I don’t think I would even redownload this if it got fixed. I’d rather just take the time like I used to and get on PC to message my friends…useless.

Just doesn’t work. Messages just fail to send for no reason, sending images is like pulling teeth, and some messages are just straight up missing. Not a single day goes by where there isn’t some sort of blackout where you can’t send anything, and that’s when the app is actually functioning. For the past week, it just fails to load and constantly retries, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Still receive push notifications like normal, but can’t reply to them. Reinstalling the app lets it work for about a day before it fails again. Just strip out everything that isn’t a basic chat function and give us a working chat app.

Good app but lots of bugs. It’s a good app to use to chat with your Steam friends. I only use it to message one of my real life friends til the app decided to not work and keep on showing me a message saying “There was a problem logging you in” The app seriously needs a huge update just to be functional again cause as of last Thursday October 3rd I can’t even use it. Apple & Valve, fix it please!!

Notifications Broken. I installed this app specifically to be notified of messages from my Steam friends when away from my PC. I’ve triple checked my settings, and notifications are enabled on phone and in Steam account. Yet, still no push notifications when I have messages waiting! When I searched online for troubleshooting suggestions, I found numerous complaints about this app feature failing ‘again’ recently. When I tried to report this probable bug via the app’s Report Feedback, it just dumped me on the Steam Community website; no actual feedback form was found. For those thinking ‘why does this matter?’: It’s anxiety inducing having to check for messages manually over & over & over while I’m waiting to hear back from a friend. Did I miss that free time they had? Do they think I’m flaking on our plans? Do I have to expose my non-Steam contact info (and risk my personal security) to make sure I can react in a timely manner? For someone like me, who values time management and respecting the time of others, this is a complete failure of a primary app function. Steam: please fix!!! The app is otherwise ‘ok’ so far. It’s not fancy or fast, and it feels like an afterthought. But it gets the job done of communicating which is its main point.

Doesn’t work. If the app worked, it would be wonderful, but it doesn’t and it won’t until steam has another update. Their last real updates were years ago. The original steam app was better, and the split made it worse. Whatever you need to do, go back and find out where you went wrong, Valve. Maybe even create the third iteration to some of your franchise games.

Does not work whatsoever. I don’t know what’s going on, but this software is actually very useful for communities. it shouldn’t be up for downloading anymore if it does not work because it makes steam look bad. And the App Store knows it doesn’t work. It’s kind of like making them look bad. But don’t waste your time trying to get this to work. I’m not a hater just a lot of inconvenience, like I just want people to sit here and be free, beta testers

Needs Update. I really enjoy having the ability to chat with friends on steam without being by a computer. However, there’s no update and there has now recently been a consistent bug and the only way to fix it is to uninstall and install it. The bug: no connection with a retry button. Please update the app devs. This is my first ever review of an app in a decade of using the AppStore on iPhone. I felt this is something that needs to be addressed.

Was fun while it worked. Today- my app stopping logging me in. I tried everything to trouble shoot it. It was working fine even with the new IOS update. Frustrating, as I still get notifications but can’t log in to reply.

Works somewhat okay on iOS but iPadOS needs major support.. On iOS, the app works fine. I can sign into the app, chat with other users, works normally. But with iPads, it says failed to connect to steam when I attempt to sign in. If your other apps like steam link and steam mobile work on iPads, this one should too. Other than iPad issues though, I would suggest adding voice calling and game inviting to the app.

Combining it into one app? My unpopular opinion. For those who support the idea of just “combining all the apps into one”, that would mean that the storage requirement would be a lot bigger for the app. At least with having them separated, I can pick and choose what features I want to use without wasting any storage, because not everyone wants to chat or not everyone wants to use the Store. Combine it all into one and you won’t be able to uninstall those individual features that you don’t use to free up storage space. With that being said, I do agree that the Steam Chat app does needs to be updated.

It’s broken and Valve doesn’t care. I remember how good back then when you were able to send messages through the original Steam app and get notifications and then it broke. A few months later this app comes out with more features and with the ability to send images and use all the emotes I have collected over the years. Now as of posting this review it has been just a downhill ride to the point that it no longer works. First it was the notifications breaking again and now I’m unable to get past the login screen that every time I try to rejoin it fail. Valve do something about this and fix it. Why bother making this and then never updating it again. You make bank and can hire someone to fix this terrible messaging app or are you just going to look the other way and abandon it like most of the other products you have made that are no longer of interest to the company.

Needs steam voice chat. I think chat is very usefully for texting your friends, but it does not work for calling them. I feel like this should be a built in function to steam chat because of its name and because it would allow some people to voice chat when they are not by their computer

Too many issues with almost no benefits. First off, why is a separate app needed just for chats? Also the app doesn’t even work for its single function of use. I’m unable to chat in groups I’m in on steam through their dedicated chatting app. When trying to change chat channels I’m in the app freezes and I’m unable to do anything about it. All around awful experience for something that shouldn’t even exist since the chat for steam should just be built into their already existing dedicated mobile app

Why even make it?. What’s the point of talking in an app that isn’t even fixed properly? The only reason why I downloaded this app was to keep in contact with most of my online friends that play similar games with. Each time I get on to read a message they sent, I get a “retry” or “we’re having trouble with loading” or something. Steam needs to step up their mobile social chatting apps.

steam chat is a horrible chat app. You can’t do a lot of things that have become standard. Videos? Forget about it, you can’t send them even though there’s support for viewing them. You can’t send any file that isn’t an image or gif. Frequently you will get chat notifications ages after you open the app and see them. Even twitter’s DMs are better than this, and that’s not even purpose built for DMing people!

Terrible. The app is absolutely terrible. For starters, why do i need to download a separate app when you can just add the chat functions into the normal steam app. Second it has way too many bugs. I can’t even log in most of the time because it “fails to connect to steam.” I can already confirm that this is not an internet issue and is an issue with the app. Overall one of the worst apps I have had to use.

An unnecessary app that doesn’t even work. This app has been around for years, and for some reason with the latest update to the associated Steam app, Valve has finally decided to force users onto this Steam Chat app. This app has been notorious within the Steam community as constantly crashing when sending messages, the UI being not optimized for a mobile phone, and just overall unnecessary when chats have been always within the Steam app itself. Quite frankly, this update has just made me overall NOT use the Steam app. No point really if I can’t send my friends a message, and no point in having this app cause it doesn’t even work as good as the old chats…

Who Thought of This?. It’s genuinely not a good app. It’s worse than just messaging on Steam and sometimes it would just stop working for NO reason for a good while, even after reinstalling. The messages are delayed, notifications have no sound or vibration so you couldn’t even tell you got one if you’re not actively looking at your phone. This app is just a downgrade from the original Steam mobile app.

Seriously. Now that steam, main app removed the chat feature I have to use this. It was clearly made form phones. Ignoring that tablet users exist. The interface is small and it lets you stretch it. Still small and does fill in the whole screen when used horizontal. The keyboard is not a full keyboard either making it annoying to type. Fix this problem. Not everyone uses these things on phones.

Overall pleased. I'm quite happy with this new app. The previous, outdated "Steam Mobile" app would not send messages 50% of the time, and the chat would go offline constantly. This new app actually solves those problems, and also adds the ability to tap links to view them in safari, rather than having to copy+paste them like in the old Steam Mobile app. It also lets you see Steam emotes, and view pictures from the chat itself. I'm rating this a 3 out of 5 however, simply because they should have updated the old Steam Mobile with this as opposed to making a whole new app. Now I have to have both apps - one for Steam Guard Mobile Authentication, one for chat. Another gripe is the fact that I can't select chat history to copy it. If the latter problem is fixed, I'll raise my rating to 4 stars.

Why 2 Apps?. I hate apps where there’s another separate app for chats, it should be one convenient bundle. I only have the steam app 1.) for steam guard 2.) to check on my friends vaguely. I can’t even add a friend without an invite link on the app, so when I want to search for a friend that I don’t have added that’s not online, I can’t through the app. Overall very frustrating and not worth the time/space an additional app takes up

No keyboard. I honestly don’t know what’s worse. This? The steam mobile app or the web viewer via iphone. Not one will let me send a message, well no that isn’t entirely true. This app lets me send a message as long as I copy and paste it in. Is it so difficult to get a chat system right? 2 stars because it actually lets you see which of your friends is online and clean interface. Forget this app, just get the web app working. Would be cheaper too.

Not built for tablets at all. So after removing the chat function from the steam mobile app itself and destroying that UI, Valve has decided to take it one step further and make the UI for the separate chat app even WORSE. The app does not have a tablet/landscape mode, and instead displays in it’s vertical mode screen all the time, even when the device is in landscape. Which is painful to type in because the keyboard only appears in that tiny little window. Totally useless as an app until they improve or update it. (Which, knowing how Valve treats all their IP’s and products, will likely never happen)

Two new apps??. Why update the old ui to roll out with two separate apps. I have to install a new app to chat with friends. The confirmation window for trades isn’t any better now it in a clutter of all other notifications that are irrelevant. The trade window is absolutely clapped, why does it say that we’re exchanging x amount of items for x amount of items when the old ui gave you the count of each specific item in the trade

Slow and buggy. I definitely understand not wanting to be a battery hog like messenger as that app destroys your battery life. However it seems like a few compromises could be made. It takes a full minute to update after I receive the notification sometimes which is just a bummer. Terrible app. Please invest some more money into this app.

Constant Crashes and Buffering.. This app is very poorly optimized. It is constantly losing connection to the Steam servers or just out right crashing. It’s a shame as the app use to work very well, but they seemed to stop caring about it. When the app does work, it’s very handy. But the inability to clear chats or erase messages like before is again a great shame. Hopefully in the future this app is updated better, or it is moved over to the main Steam App and fixed.

I think Steam finally let it brick. It’s been a while since there were any updates, and today it just straight up stopped working. My partner works in a games field, and this was the best way for me to contact them while we’re both at work, but now it won’t context to Steam’s servers. I’ve tried uninstalling, re-installing, restarting my phone, waiting a while, everything—nothing has worked. Steam has abandoned it, and feels no remorse.

I was wondering, how bad could it be?. It’s suppose to be a simple app really. Just talk with friends on steam and that’s it. How the app has so many bugs and overall bad interface is beyond me. I always found it weird that this app had such low ratings when all it has to do is one simple thing. But after using it I can now fully understand why. Too many dumb issues to name in this review. I would only use this app if you absolutely have to

Too narrowly focused…. First of all, this app is obviously designed for a mobile phone and not a tablet. I find it hard to use on a larger tablet because it’s just a scaled up version of a mobile phone interface. Please release a version designed for tablets. Secondlt, the message threads are not updated in an obvious way. The friend list do not show the latest message from the individual on the preview… it only updates after you have entered into the message thread to retrieve the new messages. This whole separation of the old steam app is a terrible idea.

Why is this necessary. I can appreciate overhauling the core steam app as it was seriously clunky and outdated; though why exactly it is now essential to use an entirely separate app for messaging, I have no idea. The old app’s message system worked fine for me, the only hiccups being the occasional duplicate message. Unless there are some wacky new chat features that necessitate having their own app, I fail to see why mobile users should be made to jump through an extra hoop to message friends from their phones. The extra funds and dev time spent to launch this app would’ve been put to far better use overhauling and updating SteamVR, which has been lagging far behind its competitors in ease of use and functionality for years now. Do better, Valve.

Fluid and works well, but seems pointless.. It does it’s job, and it does it well. However, it doesn’t seem worth keeping it. The original Steam app is quite awful, but while being clunky, the chat was still functional. To have developed a whole new app instead of overhauling the current app (which is severely out-of-date (like, two years without an update)), just seems completely unreasonable. This doesn’t help me in anyway, all it does it give me more clutter on my home-screen.

App Fails to Load. I can’t login from this app. When launching the app that I previously signed into it just keeps failing and saying retry. If I delete the app and redownload I might be able to get in. This only works the first time I open the app then it fails to load again. The Steam app with Authenticator and store seem to work fine (go figure, the store is how they get money so of course that works). It’s been over a month since this app has worked properly for me. Can’t check to see if friends are playing anything to know if it’s worth getting on the computer (primarily what I used this app for). Well guess I’ll delete this app since it’s completely useless now. No point in it taking up space. What really bothers me is the fix for this is incredibly easy, they just can’t be bothered to fix it because it doesn’t make them revenue. Well news flash, if I can’t see my friends are online I’m less likely to get on my computer. If I don’t get on my computer then I’m not playing games. If I’m not playing games then I’m not spending money in your store. Funny how that works huh?

good when it works, but constantly broken. when it works, it’s great — it gives you a simple, clean interface to chat with your steam friends. unfortunately, it is currently (and constantly) broken, with login-loops, error messages, and broken notifications being standard for years. as of october 16, 2024, i can’t even login, so the app is functionally useless. hopefully valve get around to fixing this so i can keep in touch with my steam friends, and when they do, i’ll leave an updated review. a side note: if anyone at valve reads this, please move the emoji button that’s next to the text input box. when tapping to edit the end of a sentence, it’s nearly impossible to actually select the input box without opening the emoji.

Developmentally challenges. Firstly, I can’t understand why you would release this, instead of give the steam app an overhaul with this rolled up in it. Having 2 apps now, I don’t like it. Also, why are steam chats so... inconsistent? Start a chat in game with someone on the PC, even on the new iOS steam chat, no conversation. Then, there’s voice. Many of us have been using discord for voice, and using it happily on our phones and iPads. I would honestly love to ditch it and use steam more or less exclusively, but until it has mobile support, no can do. Now I realize steam is more of a sales platform, and for that I can’t be too harsh on the company itself for providing inferior inter connectivity tools, but the voice and text chat and overall social support on mobile is bare bones and clunky as it is.

Serviceable but riddled with problems. I use the app daily to chat with friends and it works great for that but some of the features advertised simply do not work. One of those are notifications, I receive no notifications. I also notice when I close the app my status is taken offline instead of being shown as away. Hope things improve in the future but knowing Valve I won’t hold my breath for anything in the near future.

Good port of Steam chat but has issues. While it is functional, and pleasantly featured; with a lot of little things that are nuanced, I have to repeat what everyone is saying. Why is this separate from the already existing Steam app. And Steam link too, for that matter. Make the phone app a proper progeny of the desktop Steam. The Steam app could already do direct messages to friends. Although Steam Chat is lightyears ahead because that couldn't show images or anything besides text (videos/webms don't seem to be working right now on Chat). But that circles back to why didn't they push this as part of a refresh or update of the Steam app that needs some attention to a few functionality problems and outright bugs it has. Also who even uses Steam chat anyway? I use it but not many people do, I like that its just there as part of Steam and mostly works. Actually funnily enough uploading images on the app works better than on desktop which often fails to load at all. So yay? Valve please release a content update for Team Fortress 2. This is nice, but.... This app has a visually pleasant and convenient UI, and I overall appreciate the design. This being said... why Steam Chat? The much more fundamental Steam Mobile app has gone months and months without a much needed redesign. The mobile app is slow, clunky, and ugly. I would have loved to have seen the design principles displayed in this new app baked into a Steam Mobile update, and I’m sure that’s still possible. So my request is a Steam Mobile redesign, it’s much needed because the current design is far out of date. As for this app, I’ll give it a 5/5 because I mainly reviewed it to beg for a Steam Mobile redesign frankly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you stupid?. Steals user data and passwords as far as i’m concerned At this point might as well make 10 other apps to go with it. Lets just make an app for every feature on steam. A friends list app, a store app, a community marketplace app, a groups app, a steam news app, a steam 2 factor authentication app. Then I can make a steam folder on my phone and sometimes just go play around in all 12 of my steam apps

🙄. This app WAS fine a year ago, then steam devs decided to redesign the entire app to have a similar feel to the desktop app, ever since then the app has been broken. I can’t open links, when I try to view store pages for games it pulls a loading screen for a sec then just goes back to the previous page, links dont work, pages are broken, I cant even find a game in the wild and be like “huh I should add that to my wishlist” nope I have to get on my pc now because the app is so broken I cant view a frickin store page anymore. Fix it guys, this is ridiculous, you shouldnt try to fix what isn’t broken.

Splitting the app - don’t do it. Not a fan of the split app idea, won’t be using this simply for that. You obviously tried to clone a stand-alone discord app, but you aren’t Discord you’re steam. Not to mention the fact that the actual steam app has never looked more outdated than it is right now (last update was TWO years ago) functionality is also not on par with the PC steam client at the moment. Diverting resources to a separate app to clone discord wasn’t exactly the route you should have taken.

Better than nothing?. It’s better than the original app but there are still a ton of problems with it. For whatever reason, dictate seems wildly incorrect most of the time compared to using dictate with the rest of my phone. But more importantly, it seems to go out of its way to make your life extremely hard if you need to correct anything. Anywhere you tap to select a word will select the wrong word, often multiple lines up and just constantly trolls you while you’re trying to edit. The emoji‘s button is secretly three times bigger than it looks, and will constantly trigger while you’re trying to tap or select anything on the right side. Needs work.

Step down for ipad users. The addition of being able to send pictures is nice over the older version … but given the main focus is chat … it is just not ipad friendly. I know how to type for real and not the gimped thumb way. Give us ipad users an app with a full key board instead of the crap iphone style. For its primary use it is near useless for people that for real type. Give us a proper ipad version instead of gimped iphone hand me downs

What I think & A Suggestion. First of all, I want to say that I like the chat application and I have never encountered with any kind of problems so far (I am using iPhone XR. ) I don’t know why some people are complaining about Valve making a separate chat application instead of updating the mobile application with the new chat. I believe that Valve / Steam Team or who developed this app should have released it before but I know that they are taking their time and making sure it works well. Here’s a suggestion (I don’t know how to explain it properly so I will try my best to explain it.) I know that we can use the “/store” command to show a game to our friends, and when we do that it says “view store page” but we should be able to view the game’s store page in the application instead of opening the store page from Safari application.

This app is dedicated to being more social, which makes sense. Maybe there should indeed be a separate app for all social interactions. But then what does that leave on the Steam app? Just steam guard?.. ooooooh......... wow.......... So many people wonder, why didn’t they just add this to the Steam app? And so do I. The community has been begging for an update to the Steam app, and instead they do this. I love the features on this app, but I wanted an update for the Steam app. Better chatting, the ability to add steam credit to your account from the app for iOS money like iTunes credit*rolls eyes*. And just less crashing and more features like what you would do on pc in all. Also, I can’t even access my groups on steam chat app. I wanna post an announcement from the steam chat app, but I can’t. Just.. And I’m still getting notifications from both apps now when messaged. Annoying! Fix!

Why even use this when other apps like discord are so much better. I try to send a picture and it sends it but doesn’t even visually display it in the chat. Then when I close out of the app to re-open it, in hopes of resetting it, it tells me it’s unable to log me in (when I was JUST logged in beforehand). I say “okay, I’ll just try the retry button”. And it repeats the message “unable to login” over and over. I really should be giving this 1 star, but its only saving grace is that it is cross-platform with my PC and reflects the same messages sent to and from.

I don’t understand it. So I guess valve just really really don’t want us to be using Steam as a social hub. That’s the only reasoning I can come up with for this unreliable garbage.

The new update Steam chat app logging problems.. Someone help me to login into my steam chat app, the password and username is correct on steam app. But when I try the same password on steam app chat its says (can’t connect to steam).

Annoyed. Add a voice chat feature please Jesus

Steam Mobile without Chat?. NOW PUT THAT THING BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM, OR SO HELP ME

no problems. i really don't understand why people are rating this so pathetically low. the app does its job, it's actually well made (which is surprising because you'd expect something lazy for a mobile app) and has literally no issues. it's completely fine, please reviewers, stop complaining. if it's that big of an issue then stick to pc chat.

Multiple issues not fixed for years.. A few years ago my steam chat stopped sending push notifications regardless of settings in app or iPhone. Regular steam app sends them fine for reminders about sales etc. What's worse is friend status doesn't update/refresh for about 30 seconds after opening app. It shows their cached, previous status from last time the app was open hours ago! If i notice a new message received (only indication is the red circle on the app icon,) opening the app won't show any new message for half a minute too it'll pretend there aren't any. Pull down to refresh doesn't fix, force close/swipe up sometimes improves load speed. Issues encountered over multiple devices, none of my last few iPhones have worked. Known issues with no fix found when you google "steam app lag" or "refresh."

So tiny.. The characters are only about 2.5 mm in height when used on an ipad. In both portrait or landscape mode it is the same at a tiny 12 cm for the long side of the the app. Why did apple allow this past its usually very good quality control?

Just wanted to see what friends were online. Tried to use ordinary steam app yet couldnt find “friends tab” either the Ui is stoopid, or its not there. So i investigated this chat app, assuming it will show me who is online. BUT NOOO. Cant even log in “failed to connect to steam” It’s literally the only app that has an issue connecting to steam in this house! Fix your sheit you useless devs. Need some help? Hit me up.

Doesn’t fit table screen. Has its own keyboard and the space bar fails for me half the time I really can’t see why this couldn’t be integrated into the main app

Why. First why have this as a seperate app? Second why not have voice chat only text? What a massive oversight/failure of an app. Why even have it?

No notifications. Often bugged and wouldn’t let me connect, wouldn’t send messages. Then it stopped giving me notifications when I received messages, but I’d still get the little red marker on the app on my homepage. Now the app doesn’t even do that anymore lol. What’s the point of a chatting app that doesn’t have basic features?

Combine this UI with the main app. This app is surprisingly functional coming from valve. Doesn’t take away from the fact that you force your users to use a pathetic excuse of OS software. shame on you.

AMAZING. 2 stars because they wasted resources making a good chat app rather than fixing the official auth app that has chat already. If the team is capable to make this, why can’t they fix and streamline the official app?

I use steam app a lot but this is not it. Mobile steam app on my iPhone 12 is one of my most used apps. Checked today and saw it updated and chat is now a seperate app. Jarring experience to users with no warning or notification of this happening. This doesn’t need to be stand alone please integrate back with steam app

worst messaging app i've ever used. i don't understand how this is so bad. steam messaging works fine on pc. for some bizarre reason, on this app, i don't receive any notifications (despite turning them on) and i have to check the app constantly for new messages. despite that, i still just don't get messages. i'll open the homepage, it doesn't show new messages. i'll open a text convo, there will be no new messages. then, i'll check like 4 hours later, and turns out i got a message five hour before! seriously? why didn't it show up as a notification? or when i opened the app? OR WHEN I OPENED THE CONVERSATION??? ridiculous, how do you mess up this bad?

They never issue refunds. Steam never ever issues refunds, even if the app/game never opens. This directly violates Australian consumer law but they don't care.

Never loads. Never get notifications on the app & my messages rarely send through without an error popping up. Very frustrating when it use to work fine in the steam app!

Why. Why not just improve that original steam app and add these features to it. I only downloaded this to get the voice chat challenge done for the holiday badge but it doesn’t even have voice chat. If you think this app is useful, discord will blow your mind...

Steam chat situation is crazy. This is the worst thing I’ve ever used in my life. Which says a lot because I’m used to using my mouth to cut peoples grass because I couldn’t afford a mower in Venezuela. Not even a voice chat, this is just as useful as emailing the hoes instead of a number or snap.

Barely works on any given day.. No notification badges on the app icon. Not sure if they ever worked, tbh. Can’t access the server now, even after reinstalling. Likely this will fix itself, since this isn’t the first time this has happened. Hot garbage.

Cannot reply to messages. So I got this stupid app because valve decided that they wanted a separate app just for chatting and this piece of garbage does not connect to my friends list no matter how many times I refresh no matter how many times I switched from my mobile data to my Wi-Fi. It does not want to connect to my Steam account sign out sign in. Nothing works I receive messages, but I can’t login to reply to anyone. What a piece of trash.

Infinite Login Loop. As of a few days ago, got stuck in an infinite login loop when trying to boot the app up to respond to a friend. Uninstalled, reinstalled, relogged, authenticated, and was immediately returned to the loop, still unable to access chats; all regular Steam stuff has been otherwise without issue. This app’s always been somewhat clunky albeit functional, but if a chat app can’t provide its basic chat function, then it’s nothing. And it’s Valve, so it’ll probably be a few more years before anyone there remembers this app even exists and thinks to check on it. I’m just hoping their mobile services haven’t been compromised in a way that’ll have broader consequences while they’ve been neglecting this thing.

Failed to connect to steam. Every time I put in my log in details it gives me a “Failed to connect to steam” error message. No matter what I do or the amount times I do forgot password, I always receive the error message. Valve is a joke of a company and this should have just been built into steam mobile

Doesn’t work. This app used to work every time I started it. However now for the last month the app works for a short while when first installed. Then stops until I uninstall and reply in. There is no way to log out and log in as it get stuck in a loop of “loading chat app” then says error loading with the option of retrying. Which never works. Two starts as it used to work but. Or at all anymore.

Why steam chat are not working. I have been waiting for the new patch fix this issue, seem like steam no long invest in steam chat, my steam chat app just said friend network error even my iphone was on wifi or data. Unless you fix this 1 star will stay here

Um…. Like the other comments, just keep this in the original app, or atleast remove the “chat” button in the original app, but enough about that. The problem I am having is whenever I try to log in, it says it sends me a steam guard code, and when I type it in, it says that it can’t access the steam account.

Notifications are borked. No sound, no notification count, despite all options activated in the settings and in the app. Sometimes, no notifications at all. Turned notifications off and on in the settings and in the app, rebooted, and all combinations of the above. Nothing changes. Completely useless for a chat app. Please fix.

Removed from original app and clunky. I never write reviews but this is going to be my first. Been using steam for over 10 years now and I feel like this is a step backwards when I tried to access my friends list like normal on my regular steam app and was directed to the store to download this. Feels really clunky, takes up more space and it’s super irritating to need to switch between apps when it’s the same platform. Overall this just feels like a super bad decision. You didn’t need to break something that was functioning better than this, could just improve the old app and people would be happy.

How can you break an app this hard?. If I could give it zero stars I would. A few months ago you were able to log in normally and chat, now? It’ll give you e “wrong name and or password” when your using the correct password, after those two times it’ll just spit out a “unable to connect to steam” so you give it a few and try again only to get the exact same responses and error codes as the time before. Hope you like an app taking up space on your phone while being fully unable to access it

App no longer functions at a basic level. You need to reinstall the app daily because if you do not you will be met with an infinite loading screen saying ‘logging in’ until you reinstall and resign in which will last until you shut the app down totally.

Broken and unnecessary. What was the point of having two separate steam apps? They used to have a basic chat function on steam, but instead of merging chat into that, they did the stupidest thing possible and removed the normal steam app's chat. Now I have to use this horrible app that barely works. I cannot log into it at all. When I could, the last message sent in a DM wouldn't show up, and it'd just be the persons name frequently, and youtube links don't work at all.

Steam app update forced me to download this trash.. And here I thought Steam's mobile app couldn't get any worse. The chat function in the old unified app was wonky and buggy, and didn't support image attachments. This "improved" chat app doesn't even support landscape on iPad making it effectively unusable on this platform. Oh, and they added a button to attach images but it doesn't even work.

Overall good app, but it’s missing the ability to watch friends’ games. This app mirrors the friends list on desktop, yet I cannot access game information when my friends are playing a game: I can’t access a game’s store page nor can I request to watch my friends’ broadcast

This entire app should just be included in the already existing steam app. It makes no sense to divide the apps like this, not to mention the chat app is down right now and I can’t chat on the default app. What a joke, shows how disconnected the developers are. Really excited then let down. I spend a lot of time using steam mobile on my iPad and get really annoyed at the constant chat offline. When I saw this and downloaded it I was super excited. But it’s not really useful on the iPad, if it could go into landscape mode I’d five star immediately. Please give us rotational option.

Terrible, dysfunctional app.. First of all, why do we now need two applications to perform the job of just one app? And why is this app which is now dedicated to one purpose and one purpose only WORSE than the original all in one app? This app is disgusting. I have to delete and redownload it on a regular basis to fix this issue where it says “friends network loading” forever. There is no fix except to download the app again. And I don’t use a PC anymore so I’m stuck with this garbage. Seems like anymore, all tech companies do is make their apps and technology worse, charge more money for it, and take all the joy out of everything. I’m glad I don’t use steam every day anymore.

Thank goodness.. On the regular Steam app it’s kinda janky towards the chat side of things. This app that i’m sure is new changed stuff. It’s basically like being on your computer. it’s super handy & im thankful i can send memes from my phone to steam friends now lol.

Seriously. Now that steam, main app removed the chat feature I have to use this. It was clearly made form phones. Ignoring that tablet users exist. The interface is small and it lets you stretch it. Still small and does fill in the whole screen when used horizontal. The keyboard is not a full keyboard either making it annoying to type. Fix this problem. Not everyone uses these things on phones.

Maybe make some security update?. I wake up and some previous webpages I approved about a month or so ago are being used by Russians and HK IPs to send my friend list scam links. Geez where’s all those two-factor and steam guard features? Oh they didn’t need them because of APIs unlike myself the account owner (who has to sign-in with two factors all over my stuff). Dear Steam make your security more secure can’t believe I gotta say that.

Who Thought of This?. It’s genuinely not a good app. It’s worse than just messaging on Steam and sometimes it would just stop working for NO reason for a good while, even after reinstalling. The messages are delayed, notifications have no sound or vibration so you couldn’t even tell you got one if you’re not actively looking at your phone. This app is just a downgrade from the original Steam mobile app.

Trash. You’d be better off just sending a letter through the mail. Can’t login but gives you zero options to change anything. Your only option is to “retry” which does nothing. No cache to clear. No settings to change. No way to try and fix the issue because we all know they aren’t going to. This is why discord owns all of our words. Thanks Valve.

Steam Chat value? Having a Hard time?. Less than week ago I tried to download this Steam Chat Value app, for whatever reason it will not let me download. All I see is a round circle that refuses to download it fully. At the same time I wish that it can download it fully. In other words when it download fully I can use this app. So that way I can download it in order for me to use this Steam Chat Value.

Steam mobile is steam mobile. Just using it for chat and it functions on mobile device for everything I need between gaming sessions.

Very buggy. Lately this app basically only works when it feels like it. When I launch the app it gets stuck in 'friends network loading' followed by 'there was a problem logging you in', hitting retry returns the same error so I just haven't bothered and just remote into my pc via steam link to check chats

One problem. I like that I can text to my friends without having to be at my computer. The only thing that I want in the app is there to be voice chat so I can talk to them instead of texting.

This should be all in steam Mobile. So I just recently figured out there are now two steam apps. One for chat and one for the rest of steam. Not a huge fan of this and they should be combined for simplicity sake. Though atleast the chat works on here now.

There was a problem logging you in. As others have said, can’t log in. Especially frustrating as I still receive message notifications, just cannot see them in the app. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and for a few days it worked fine, and now it’s back to not working again.

App is atrocious. Barely loads anything and the speed at loading is abysmal. The fact you guys had to make a separate app to let us chat on the same program is just so… words can’t describe what I want to say. I regret updating steam app to it forcing me to download this trash, but it seemed like steam chats weren’t loading new messages or supported the old firmware anymore, so I’m now stuck with this dog pile.

Good but Unnecessary. Instead of fixing and updating the Steam Mobile app, they release a Steam chat app. Have fun using more than one app for one service. Completely pointless. Why 2 Apps?. I hate apps where there’s another separate app for chats, it should be one convenient bundle. I only have the steam app 1.) for steam guard 2.) to check on my friends vaguely. Definitive steam chat. It’s the currently up to date steam app just like on the PC, the app we’ve been waiting for since the new chat, complete with emoticons and links and all that other good stuff. Shame it can’t be on the regular app.

Works “Fine”, a bit superfluous.. I don’t really understand why we must have a entirely separate application for chatting with our steam account. It’s a bit messy and seems like lazy work, not something I expected from Valve. Hopefully there’s plans to merge the chat into the main steam application because this really isn’t a good look.

Huh. Why are people saying this is bad? It works really well for me, but there are some stuff I would change like some customization tools like changing a pfp for a group chat.

Absolutely garbage. I don’t normally leave reviews but after sitting on the app trying to login for 20 mins and it saying failed to connect in beyond infuriated. I clearly have a connection as I’m leaving this review and the main steam app is working fine so it’s not steams servers being down. Why on earth valve decided to separate the chat app from the main app I have no clue but it was a silly decision.

Now fixed on iOS 13. Old reviews out of date.. Far better chat experience than the old, clunky app. Still waiting for more than just chat, though. Would love to see the old app brought up to date, or have features moved over.

Doesn’t work. If the app worked, it would be wonderful, but it doesn’t and it won’t until steam has another update. Their last real updates were years ago. The original steam app was better, and the split made it worse. Whatever you need to do, go back and find out where you went wrong, Valve. Maybe even create the third iteration to some of your franchise games.

Two apps is backwards. Okay I like some of the improvements BUT having to download a separate application to do the same exact thing you were able to do with one is kinda backwards, it’s super inconvenient. I just want to chat with my friends while looking through games and news and this new set up makes it so needlessly difficult to enjoy your experience.

Needs Voice Chat. I think it’s fine the UI/UX is fine. It’s also modern enough and works fine enough. The lack of voice chat capability means this app is basically useless especially for Discord refugees. Valve add the ability to do voice chat and this will be golden 4 stars.

Steam Chat is cool. Steam Chat is a good app, but you can do everything there is a to do on Steam Chat on the Steam. So there really isn’t any point in installing it since all of the features on Steam Chat are already on the Steam app.

Borderline broken. Steam chat mobile won't log in properly, its pretty much useless to use right now and they haven't updated it in years, would avoid at all costs to use unless they put something else up that's more available.

Splitting the app - don’t do it. Not a fan of the split app idea, won’t be using this simply for that. You obviously tried to clone a stand-alone discord app, but you aren’t Discord you’re steam. Not to mention the fact that the actual steam app has never looked more outdated than it is right now (last update was TWO years ago) functionality is also not on par with the PC steam client at the moment. Diverting resources to a separate app to clone discord wasn’t exactly the route you should have taken.

Awful. I rarely put in the effort to leave reviews but this app is abysmal. It refuses to let you sign into your Steam account and even after resetting passwords/removing and re-adding Steam guard, it still just will not let you sign in. The app does not work at all. Valve - please bring back the chat functionality to the main Steam app, no one likes this separate one.

Voice Chat is still missing. This app is good for group messaging but is missing the ability to join group voice channels. This is such a basic feature on Discord, I can’t believe it hasn’t been implemented already.

Terrible. The app is absolutely terrible. For starters, why do i need to download a separate app when you can just add the chat functions into the normal steam app. Second it has way too many bugs. I can’t even log in most of the time because it “fails to connect to steam.” I can already confirm that this is not an internet issue and is an issue with the app. Overall one of the worst apps I have had to use.

Lacks Landscape mode for tablets.. There’s probably mixed opinions for splitting the Chat and main mobile program but the update was necessary since the main client is so outdated. The program seems to be designed for phones first because I cannot find an option for Landscape mode which I use a lot on this tablet.

Broken in iOS 18. While the app has been a little flakey for some time, iOS 18 has completely broken it. Your friend’s list will not load at all. All you get are chat notifications now and cannot do anything else. Valve please stop abandoning your mobile apps for years on end. You did the same thing with the main Steam app only to come back and revamp it. Please do the same here.

This should just be integrated with the other Steam App.. Having an entirely separate app for chat, when it worked fine before, is entirely unnecessary and cumbersome.

Simply doesn’t work. Why add 2 steam apps in the first place when you could’ve just made a chat inside the original steam app? Most of the time Steam Chat doesn’t even let you receive messages from other players and you have to close down the app and reopen it just for the message to send.

great app, awesome port!. I don’t really have any complaints regarding about the port however I am not receiving any notifications at all from my friends, i’ve even checked settings and everything. Overall it’s pretty cool!

Could be better. It’s okay, it’s a lot better than the steam mobile app. However, the notifications aren’t the most reliable, sometimes images get randomly tilted sideways, and messages just straight up disappear sometimes.

Notifications not showing. App is on the latest updated version on iphone 13, notifications aren’t popping up. Checked through settings, they are supposed to be on.

Useful except you can’t call. I really like that you can now chat with groups and friends over mobile but I have one issue, you can’t call any groups or friends, my friends prefer to use steam over discord and I don’t want to have to get on a computer every time I contact my friends

Steam. I don’t hate this but I do hate that the two apps are not combined, and even that they are EXTREMELY hard to regonize from each other, I do get, and have the same problem with iMessage and Phone apps because they could be easily combined but this is a new level of that.

Is useless and pointless. So instead of just adding the chat onto the main Steam Application instead we have this app which is completely useless and super flawed. Not only do you not receive notifications but it’s also poorly executed and barely has any options compared to the standalone app.

Bad app. This is by far the dumbest thing you guys could have done for the last couple days not has your app claimed I been offline but just recently logged me out and claimed I failed to log in while not logging out in the first place this a bad app and if you don’t fix it I recommend no one use the apps at all they ruined both of them and this is highly disappointing >:(

steam chat is a horrible chat app. You can’t do a lot of things that have become standard. Videos? Forget about it, you can’t send them even though there’s support for viewing them. You can’t send any file that isn’t an image or gif. Frequently you will get chat notifications ages after you open the app and see them. Even twitter’s DMs are better than this, and that’s not even purpose built for DMing people!

Slow and buggy. I definitely understand not wanting to be a battery hog like messenger as that app destroys your battery life. However it seems like a few compromises could be made. It takes a full minute to update after I receive the notification sometimes which is just a bummer. Terrible app. Please invest some more money into this app.
