Note Flash Music Sight Reading App Description & Overview

What is note flash music sight reading app? Note Flash helps you improve your sight reading skills for sheet music. This is the most intuitive way of learning how to read sheet music notes as it listens via the microphone or a connected MIDI instrument to make sure you play the correct note in the correct octave. Note Flash is the ONLY app which also has accidentals (sharp and flat notes) along with ledger lines for advanced players. Note Flash is also the ONLY app to show graphs on your progress in recognizing notes faster. This way you will know which notes you are spending more time thinking.

**How to use**

- Best results via a MIDI connected instrument. I developed and tested using a Yamaha P115 Piano connected to iPhone/iPad with this cable (other MIDI cables should work too):
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0829NV65Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1UM1J239QRPCJ&psc=1

Play the Note shown on screen on the piano and the app will listen via the microphone or via the connected MIDI instrument. You must play in the correct octave too - Note Flash is very intelligent to recognize the correct octaves.

If played correctly, the app shows a new note on screen. If you can't remember, then you can tap "Show Hint". The app is built for infinite practice which encourages practice more as it makes note reading into a game.

Note Flash learns which note you are getting wrong or spending more time thinking and shows you more often. You can view your progress graphs for each note and both staff. This way you will know exactly how long you spend thinking of each note and how it's improving!

You can select which hand you would like to practice or you can do both randomly. You can also choose to show accidentals - sharp, flats as well enable ledger lines for more advanced students.

The app comes with a variety of beautiful themes and you can use your own picture too for the theme.

The app contains no ads for a distraction free experience.

Please note that the app needs microphone access to listen to your piano. The app does NOT connect to the internet and your microphone data is completely safe as it never leaves your phone.

I recommend using a MIDI connected piano. If you use the microphone and are having trouble detecting the notes, go to my app's settings and change the "Sensitivity". Default value is 5.

I have made this app with love because I myself struggled to read music when learning piano and the old paper flash cards were just not effective! So I really hope this helps you and your students out!

Nagged for review repeatedly during timed session. Also consumes insane battery

Worthless. Worthless app doesn’t register notes

How does this app work?. Did not get any idea or help on how the app works after I downloaded.

Needs more ledger lines. Seems like it’d be exactly what I’m looking for except it only goes two ledger lines above and below

Love it😍. I lo

Not very responsive. Finding this a bit frustrating for sure hitting the right key at times and it’s not registering so this is very frustrating and could be misleading and detrimental. Anyone has any suggestions in regard to this issue would really appreciate knowing about it

You need to buy a pro version and there’s only 3 settings. You need to buy a pro version and there’s only 3 settings

Reviewer. I’m old but even so I’m learning music theory. Now all I have to do is learn an instrument (good luck with that!).

Limited but OK for what it does. I like that it provides a full range of notes to practice and can take input via MIDI. Having said that, these are not discrete exercises, just one note after another ad infinitum, so it’s kind of boring. Also the orientation is fixed so you can’t turn your phone upside down if you need to in order to accommodate a MIDI cable. (At least the orientation doesn’t change on my iPhone Mini.)

Phone get hot and battery depletes. I use app for maybe 2 mins max. it completely kills my battery and the phone gets very warm to hot on the one side. But the way its designed has helped with remembering notes quicker, But i will have to delete app makes me nervous for my phone.

Paid and constantly asked to rate. Great idea. Stupid that I paid for the upgraded app and it keeps asking me to rate…….

Has potential but needs work. I think this app is a good idea and I do enjoy it. It’s nice how you can customize which notes you want to work on. There is a bit of a problem with accuracy. I purposely pressed the wrong key a few times to test the accuracy of this app and it did fail to catch these mistakes a lot. My daughter came in the room and coughed and it went onto the next note as well. There were a few times that it would catch mistakes but not as often as I would have expected it to. I would like to point out that I am playing on a piano that was just tuned by a technician two weeks ago. I do like the app and I think it’s alright for people who already know their way around the piano and just want to become faster with their sight reading, but if you’re a beginner and you’re just learning I wouldn’t suggest it.

App needs a lot of help!!. I purchased this app to help me on some sight reading. Now, I didn’t have super high hopes because it’s pretty cheap but this app is not even worth the money. Even if you hit the wrong key it goes to the next note as if you hit the correct one. This app will not help me improve. Save your money.

Eeeeee. It's a great app and easy to learn but you have to pay to learn the left hand.

Ask to review every minute. Decent app but window pops up to review every minute which is annoying.

Poor. It appears that it fails to respond to correct note played frequently why. Probably to frustrate you enough to buy “the pro” app

Sound. It would be a lot better if it had a sound!

Asked me to rate 3 times in first minute of use…. Sheesh

Says wrong notes are right. It says wrong notes are correct and is extremely inaccurate. There’s a setting that lets you turn the sensitivity up or down but it still will go to the next note and show you did it right even if play a note that’s not even close. It also sometimes skips through a few notes even when you does play anything.

Great tool for learning music. Help me remember all notes

Too fast. Cannot be slowed down

Terrible. It showed notes that didn’t even exist and for some reason only accepted the letter D as correct. absolute trash app I’m gonna delete right now

Unreliable note recognition via iPad microphone. Tested it out and often had to play the same (correct) note a few times before the app recognized it. If it worked it would be great, but unfortunately it didn’t work for me.

Really Bad App. You can not set the app to your level at all. If you want to change any settings you must pay monthly. The "game" pretty much never stops. Altogether, an app you do not want to download.

Revised review. After a few days I decided to try the contact us option within the app again. It worked. I was able to reach out to the developer. The app is now working as it is designed to function. My one suggested upgrade would be to add midi and Bluetooth capabilities. A big thank you to the developer! Previous one star review that I upgraded to four-star. I had no intention of writing a negative review until after attempting to contact them through the app. However the contact us link in the app is not functioning. I also tried the app support link right here within the App Store. That particular app support link takes you to a non-existing Twitter account. So I am left with no choice. My first disappointment was the free version offers nothing. They would be better off giving you the full version for two weeks, or something like that. However the app is only four dollars so I went ahead and purchased to experience the full version. The app is not picking up the sound of my keyboard. Therefore it is stuck on one note and wont switch to a new note. The microphone option is turned on within the app. I have also restarted my device which is a 2018 iPad. Hopefully the developers respond to this feedback so that I can have the problem resolved or a refund. Then I would be happy to upday my review. The app is useless as it is.

The feedback nagging is very annoying. This program requires concentration to learn the placement of notes on the staff. The constant nagging makes this impossible. I paid for this app fair and square. I didn’t pay to get nagged every few minutes. Knock it off,

Slow MIDI reaction time. Software is slow to react to MIDI keyboard. Never quite sure if I got the note wrong or software still ‘thinking’. I do not recommend.

Nice layout. 😑

Response time is slow.. Response time is slow.

Doesn’t work. This stinks

Screen frozen on new IPhone 14. Does not work on latest IPhone. Screen is frozen.

Does not work on new Yamaha csp 170 piano and brand new iPad what am I doing wrong?. Looks fun but won’t work

Really fun..... 🙂 this is just ok. but boring to.

Very good Sight Reading help for piano. Does sometimes fail to hear a note but this may be dependent on keyboard tone or IPad microphone. Overall very pleased. It definitely helps and the charts identify weaknesses and improvements. Note that where app. initially fails to recognise a note, this shows as you taking time to find it. Plenty of options to increase difficulty and change appearance. Worth the price but try the free version first to ensure equipment compatibility.

Paid but nothing. I bought this app through the App Store but when I open it, the request is to purchase the app. It seems as though you must pay twice to unlock the features.

accepts incorrect notes !!!. This app is quite helpful in learning piano keyboard orientation, however - when using an acoustic piano (recently tuned) it often accepts incorrectly played notes and moves on without any visual indication that a mistake was made (especially in the range of notes below middle C). Most persons using this app (and especially those familiar with the keyboard, and those persons with a good “Ear”) will realize that they played a wrong note immediately AFTER they played it, so the overall learning process is not seriously impacted. Regardless of the above, I continue to use the app and improve!

My daughter loves using this to practice playing the piano!. Remove ads :)

Bugs. App doesn’t hear/recognize the notes I play - mic is on.

Amazing tool for all musicians!!. Such useful tool for musicians of all stages. Sensitive enough for different instrument, simply amazing!!

- Fixed an orientation bug on iPad where settings screen was chopped off. I recommend using a MIDI connected piano. If you use the microphone and are having trouble detecting the notes, go to my app's settings and change the "Sensitivity". Default value is 5. I hope you are enjoying Note Flash and improving your sheet music reading! Please leave us a rating on the app store as that helps spread awareness for the app. Email me for any feedback: pran@pranapps.com ---- Previous: - The timer now only starts when you press the first correct note. This prevents your average from being skewed while you position your hand then pressing the first note. Note that this will work best when using MIDI and not the microphone as the microphone might pick up "noise" which can be the "correct" note. - App now works in upside down orientation too - this might help users who have a phone connected via MIDI as the USB port can now be at the top and practice sight reading. - Added MIDI support: Now you can practice via a MIDI connected instrument. I developed and tested using a Yamaha P115 Piano connected to iPhone/iPad with this cable (other MIDI cables should work too): https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0829NV65Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1UM1J239QRPCJ&psc=1 - Increased the microphone sensitivity of the app and added a new setting to change it. - Fixed a bug where custom note collections would lose the sharp & flats after restart. - Reduced the frequency of review prompt. - Updated App Store metadata. - Switched to blue color theme. - Small UI tweaks. We listened to you and made a bunch of improvements from you feedback: 1. We removed all ads from the app for a pure distraction free experience even for free users! 2. Added a play and pause button in the app. 3. Added a pure white background and a pure black background theme. 4. The Treble and Bass sign on the staff is now accurate. 5. The Note on the staff is now accurate and touches the lines just like real sheet music on paper. 6. The charts now say "Average: X seconds" instead of the old short form "s" only. 7. A few users mentioned that the hints should use the traditional form of naming. For example previously, a E note would have a hint "E or F flat". Now there is a switch in the settings called "Traditional note hints" which if on, will only say "E" in the hint. 8. A few small UI tweaks to make the app more appealing and accurate to real sheet music.
