Artemis Director's Viewfinder App Reviews

Artemis Pro erased all of my Location Scout Photos. Do not buy this app. I just went on an all day scout photographing park locations across LA. It was a jam packed day, so I didn’t have time to export all of my photos from Artemis to my Photos folder between locations. I returned home to two very sick and fussy toddlers, and an exhausted wife, so I took care of my family and elected to sort and export my photos in the morning. Well, I woke up and the app updated itself overnight and erased all of the photos I took the previous day. Literally, hundreds of photos. An entire day wasted. And it’s raining these next couple of days, so I can’t go and reshoot everything because I need clear skies for the location deck of my outdoor spot. There is no customer service support to reach out to, either, so the best I can do is warn you all about purchasing this terrible app. Next time I will just use the dedicated camera app on my iPhone.

Used to be my go to choice for scouting. But the excessive functions have made this app literally impossible to use when i need to get a frame quickly. I will be switching to cardage

Pictures were deleted or went offline.. Every picture I took was deleted or went offline and I can not recover them.

Could be the gold standard. I love this app, but it’s constantly has issues that really have no excuse existing in this day and age. Taking pictures with the viewfinder is insanely slow. The app needs 4 seconds between snapping a photo, or often doesn’t register photo button at all. If the photos in the album exceed 80 photos, review photos just falls apart entirely. Pictures you’ve taken won’t save, or previous photos won’t appear at all. It just crashes and can’t handle it. Why is this an issue on an iPhone 15 Pro in 2025? Especially when I’m on set and need to pull up a reference that is no longer even viewable. It’s this reason that I’ve switched to Cadrage where none of these issues exist.

No Canon mirrorless cameras. I downloaded the App (10 min ago) and was not able to use it because there are no Canon mirrorless cameras listed. When I followed the instructions to add the Canon R5 as a custom camera but received an error “No valid size available.” Likewise there are no lenses available. Further, there is no content info for the company in the app. This app needs to be updated.

Works for LF Cinema Cameras. If the new version crashes when you install, try this: Open the Settings App > General > Reset then tap Reset Location and Privacy Open Artemis Pro and tap Allow or Yes for any prompts.

A couple small feature requests. I really wanted to contact the company directly vs leaving a review but there is no contact link through the support path. So far as lenses are concerned, there are enough Sirui lenses floating out there at this point that it would be nice to have those in the set. Further more, in the generic lens section why not have an option to customize your anamorphic squeeze? They have some 1.3 lenses but their new full frame lenses are an odd size of 1.6x. SmallHD allows this type of adjustment and it would be a great option to have in general. I have also noticed that you cannot select any focal lengths in red. I understand these would create vignetting but sometimes I would be cropping it anyway so I don’t really care if it vignettes, etc. In the case of ZCam, we can mod an MFT mount and put it on an F6 and pretty much get full frame coverage up to about 5k if the rear diameter of the lens allows for that. Any chance of importing our own stand in models or transparent png files would be huge as well. Thanks for such an amazing app, and for adding Z Cam.

definitly the best app for filmmaking. precise usefull and always improving. Can t live without it. Not only a go to but THE reference in film making app. and onset best tool. thank you

Best Cinematographer’s Tool. I love using the Artemis Director Viewfinder! I have been using the app for years on ALL my productions

Cadrage is 100 times better. Don’t waste your money on this overpriced app. Cadrage is so much better because it’s easier to use and has a nice simple UI. This app is worthless to me. UPDATE: No Nic, I have no interest contacting you. I changed my review to correct the price I listed. Thanks for letting me know about that. You also addressed several other issues I mentioned in my review, but oddly, you did not address the fact that Cadrage is so much better. USERS: Do a search of Artemis reviews before buying and you’ll see that the majority of people agree that Artemis is bloated and difficult to use, and has LUTs that are comical and tacky. Save yourself the frustration of trying to use this app and get the better one.

Very useful. Between is and Cadridge my cinematography tests are very fluid. Excellent app

Nothing but crashes this version. On iPhone 15pro, can’t get the app to launch.

Saved my movie. Wouldn’t have been able to do it in the ridiculously short time and ridiculously small amount of money we had. Lifesaver.

Robust and Well-Conceived. All of the features I need (and more) as well as stellar tech support to boot. Worth every penny.

Not for me. I am using the App on my new IPhone 12. I working on a feature film and about half the time I go to use it the screen is black or freezes. I have to quit it all the time and restart it. I don’t think it was the money for the level of frustration. Salvatore Totino ASC , AIC

Great App!!. Been using it for a while and needing to add new lenses and Nic is very helpful adding lenses right away and also talking with him, informing me how to add custom lenses properly and understanding lenses in general… more than an app! Nic Very accomodating!!

Stellar Customer Service!. When ArtemisPro first came out, I upgraded. I knew that it would have better features since the developers listen to their clientele. I was right. I use this app on every TV commercial I produce. I don’t micromanage the Directors vision or the DP’s framing but try and previz the oncoming circus that is known as production. If I know the DP who will be shooting the spot, I try to reach out to confirm the camera that might be used. I’ll usually just go with a generic set of primes to cover off the basic FOV. As they say, it’s all in the prep. I’ve had a few questions since this upgrade and depending upon the complexity of the ask, someone gets back to me in 24hrs. I recently had some issues with an uploading process that took some back and forth but fortunately the person I dealt with really wanted to understand the issue. He hung in there and eventually figured it out. Also, the fact that this marries up with HeliosPro, their sun/moon prediction app makes it a winning combo. Go to the hip, it’s worth every penny.

It’s the most valuable app I’ve purchased.. It’s great.

Depth of field. I love this app and I use it all the time for location scouting. It would be really cool to see a live depth of field calculator on the screen while framing a shot. Lets say you are taking a picture with 50mm lens at 2.8 aperture. What would the depth of field equal to as a reference on the screen. This would help to see how much light would be needed for a certain shots.

Update is working good. Working with iPhone 15 pro, after a few weeks of glitches

Great app but crushes after a while. My Artemis pro starts crushing on opening on my iPhone 8 and iPad Air 2. It used to work fine on both device but a while ago it stopped working on my iPad first, show the logo page and quits itself. I tried reboot, reinstall, and even after updating the iOS it still won’t work. And now it starts doing the same thing on my iPhone 8. I also tried rebooting and reinstalling on my iPhone but no luck. Both device has the latest iOS and latest version of Artemis pro. Anyone experience the same issue?

App Doesn’t Work. I purchased this app in the bundle with Helios. It used to work fine ( a little slow between shots), but it hasn’t worked since I upgraded my OS to the latest versions. I open it, and it just closes out before it opens, every time.

Big privacy issues here!!!. You have to give them full entrance to your photo library, as well as for sound libraries. Excuse me??? Would have been great to be informed about this before paying...

Just download.. Please add a lock screen widget for faster launch times. So I can pick up my phone and get right into the app. Also allow us to save different camera and lens packages. So when moving between different projects I don’t have to redo settings each time.

Artemis Pro is great!. I find Artemis Pro incredibly useful and easy to use. I was recently on a shoot with several different models of Red cameras, and the Artemis app excelled. The accuracy and flexibility of the app is so useful on a technical and creative level that that I’ve begun to really rely on it. Being able to move around a set or locations and share information with key members of the production is critical. I would highly recommend it cinematographers and camera teams. The Artemis Pro team is extremely knowledgeable and responsive. When I reached out to them about a specific question, their response was fast and accurate.

Been using it for years now. Had some hiccups along the way, but it’s been pretty solid for a while now. Use it on every tech scout.

Slow. I purchased this app and had to look for an alternative. I find it too cumbersome.

Very good. Everything is very cool, especially the viewing angle for framing, I own a Nikon ZR camera and I really want you to add it in future updates

UPDATE - Fixes in process! / For these prices, apps shouldn’t repeatedly crash. I just got an email from the developer, and I am extremely impressed that he reached out and is working with me to fix these problems. If every developer was this responsive the world would be a beautiful place. :-) —————————- I just got Artemis Pro and HeliosPro. A number of functions such as trying to change camera info, or zooming in on light pollution maps l cause both apps to crash on iPhone XS Max and iPad Pro, running most current iOS 12. Unacceptable, and very disappointing. These are apps meant to be used by professionals!

Great app for professional directors/DPs. I pulled the trigger and picked this up to use on a feature I’m shooting soon. I can’t tell you how convenient it is to be able to pull out my phone on set and tell my AC exactly what lens I need in seconds. Beyond that, the team behind Artemis have packed this app with tons of useful pre-vis features. You can definitely tell that Nic and his team are industry vets. Not to mention they have the best customer service I’ve ever experienced, hands down. Blown away by the dedication shown by the dev team, and I know I’ll get lots of use out of Artemis.

Artemis is the real deal!. I have used Artemis since it’s beginning… And can’t begin to say enough good things about it… It has been such a huge tool to helping setting up and designing shots. Sharing info with other departments.. it’s a massive timesaver and gives you the ability to communicate with photos and videos exactly what your plan is.. if I could give it an 11 star rating I would!!!! Industry Standard. Great app with above and beyond customer service.

Loses my photos. There has been a glitch on this app for over a year. I take pictures and when I go to send them to my computer, they do not exist. Usually restarting my phone 3-4 times brings them back to the library.

Please add Komodo. Love this app!! Can’t wait for the Komodo to be added!

Poor Picture Quality. I know this app is not meant to take the greatest of photos, but the app takes very low quality images. It would be great if the software was improved to take better images.

An ESSENTIAL Tool. My Artemis App has replaced my Director’s Finder. It’s inclusive for all who need to know what the Camera will see and helps create a shorthand with the Director. Nic keeps improving the experience and functionality, (I love the Golden Ratio frame lines) and he’s responsive when I need assistance. I use Artemis seamlessly between my IPad and IPhone. Bravo and thank you Nic for all that you do.

Indispensable. I use this app with each and every setup every day I’m on set. Accurate, easy to use, easy to communicate with, indispensable.

Always had issues. I’ve been using Artemis since 2018, probably even longer. It’s always been plagued with issues. A very clunky app that costs a lot. A recent update has rendered this app useless for me (iPhone 14): every time I tap on the scene to view images it freezes. I lost an entire scout because of this. I just tried deleting and re-downloading and still the same problem. It’s an app for taking pictures and I can’t look at the pictures. It’s basic function is useless. Moving on to another app

The new Update had me lost all the data. Everything was fine till I the new update. Everything is gone, the setting… and all the photos for one of my project….. Also, some of the focal lens are blur.

Awesome. There is no equal to this app or the amazing company which developed it. You simply will not find a more dedicated developer.

Terrible. Keeps crashing with all me scout images

Incredibly detailed and great customer support. I have repeatedly been impressed with the customer service when I’ve had issues that I couldn’t figure out. Also, very impressed with the new update as it’s very flexible regarding frame lines, lens combinations, etc..

Very impressive customer service. I had an issue with the size of the image displayed on my iPhone and couldn’t figure out how to reset it back to full screen. I sent an email expecting to hear back in a day or two, but instead within minutes I got an email as well as a text and was on the phone with Nic. Solved my issue immediately and allowed me to continue on with my day of scouting with full use of the app. Great service! Thank you guys!

Best Video Pre Production App On Mobile. I’ve had the app over 3 months now and the amount of information that I’ve been able to gather just by remembering I’ve got this tool on my phone is astounding. Once you it have your camera and lens choices set up, it’s very quick to capture your visual ideas and keep them organized. The only thing that would make this app even better is having the ability to create multiple camera & lens profiles to quickly switch between! Keep up the great work! ✌️😎👍

Filmmaker’s Friend. There’s no question that this app is the most useful tool for every filmmaker. From concept to production it has aided in the process and given me and my crew a better way to convey what is in my mind!

Crashes despite all attempts to fix. I’ve tried every recommended fix to the crashing issue, the most I can get it opening the app and using it for a while, but eventually it will start crashing again and I have reset location privacy, which is super inconvenient to then have to go through all my other apps and ‘okay’ the pop ups. It also felt very deceiving to remove a lot of features from Artemis legacy and so that you’re forced to buy the pro version if you want things like 2.35 frame lines for cameras that don’t shoot it internally. Definitely would like to see the crashing fixed so I could actually use it, and then maybe it would be worth a couple more stars, and the price tag.

Incredible. This is a wonderful app that often makes me stop and marvel: “isn’t technology amazing.” To have a digital view finder that can emulate pretty much any camera and lens set that you’ll ever need, that can take high resolution photos with all the positional data you could want... and now capture video 🤯 All on a device you always have with you. Whatever the price is at the moment - it’s a BARGAIN! Over the past 10 years of my career this has been the most significant addition to my tool box, and with the new iPhone wide lens it just got better. Don’t read the one star reviews. I’ve had this app since version one and it has never crashed on me. Keep up the great work guys!

Would be great if it supported more formats and lenses. Good app, easy to use, etc. but not the right tool if you want to shoot with any lens apart from the extremely limited pre-sets. It would be great if users could customize more. For instance, you can select Generic Anamorphic lens but only in 1.3 / 1.8 / 2 - there’s no solution if you need to shoot 1.5 anamorphic.

Literally Unusable. I’ve used this app since 2019. It’s always been good at what it does. However for the past two updates, and at least the past six months, the app is unusable. The image is not able to be brought into focus within the Artemis app. Meaning that none of your shots ever are clear, regardless of focal length. Most frustrating is when the app finally does find focus, the second you hit record the app goes out of focus again, and you’ll be lucky if it ever comes back. Sometimes it will focus after ten seconds or so, but then you’re that person on set looking like an idiot for saying “action” during your blocking, followed by “oh no, wait, sorry hold on. Artemis isn’t in focus” I’ve gone back to using my iPhone/ipad camera instead of the app. Really disappointing.

The Gold Standard. Artemis has changed the way we work on set and it’s a dream come true. Impeccable customer service.

Great support. I’ve been using this app for years when scouting. It is a great tool. Recently, I had a problem exporting images. Sent a help request through the app and the developer contacted me almost immediately and helped get a workaround to save the day. Great support that was much appreciated.

Great and useful app (with one deficiency). This is such a useful app, but it would be helpful to have a crosshair.

Why did I wait so long to upgrade my Artemis Legacy?. The pro version is simply amazing. Saves so much time during pre pro, scouting, and on set! Highly recommend. Customer service is also amazing.

Wrong price. Hello, I thought the price is 39.99 dollars but I got charged for 51 dollars. I’m confused about it.

Ridiculous glitches. This app has glitches that are APPALLING in a $40 (CAD) app. Organizing shots is a disaster - the folder management is a mess. If you do manage to get your shots in folders, they REVERSE ORDER unexpectedly and for no apparent reason. This makes exporting a shortlist unusable. Edits, and sketches cannot be revised or removed. Shots cannot be easily duplicated. This app is WAY more work than it needs to be. Developers: please fix ASAP! Until then, I would avoid this app.

Saving profiles. It would be of great advantage to save several profiles. Having been doing daycalls on several shows. It would be great to save camera and lenses and to Title the saved profile.

Bugs. Great app, but a lot of bugs. Cant report a bug in the app because there is a bug that prevent the keyboard from going away. Big bug with viewing previously taken photo, opens the most recent photo so you have to swipe through every photo youve taken

A must have for any DP/Operator/ Directors kit. The two things I never show up to set without is my light meter and a fully charged phone with Artemis Pro. Aside from the obvious production environment, I use Artemis extensively in pre-vis while location scouting and shot listing with my collaborators. The ability to use the virtual stand in feature has proved invaluable while standing in a location and trying to estimate frame sizes without a physical cast or objects. This allows me to return from a scout and share those mock set ups with other departments with all the relevant information like orientation, sunset, sunrise, geographic coordinates, colour palette and lens metadata. In the production environment Artemis Pro is what allows me to collaborate and express my ideas to my keys, operator and director in real time. Long gone are the days of relying on a physical finder mounted with a prime with only the director and DP can only see. There shouldn’t be any hesitation in purchasing this app if you are a working DP, operator or director. This is a must have tool for any kit.

Love the updates. Being able to share camera and lens settings is very useful. Would love to be able to export camera/lens settings as a QR code so I could print it up and stick it on the lens case. Then when you show up as a daily you scan the code and off you go.. no need to chase another crew member around…

Not accurate. This app has one job to do....relay an accurate replica of the various focal lengths. Right? Well it fails. Miserably. My voigtlander 10.5mm looks more like a 14mm. And even tho that sounds small, it makes a huge difference. 5 min after purchase, I regret this. Buyer beware.
