"Absolutely phenomenal. This is better than any YouTube video, podcast, or music theory book I have read. Within 48 hours using this app I have actually comprehended what is being taught far beyond any previous comprehension for past products. Intuitive and straight to the point. I started music theory recently with a few beginner audio books. I also bought a hard copy to supplement my learning. While the one I am using is really good it is broad and intense. What I love about these app lessons is how much territory this covers in a clear and concise manner. Did I say how fast learning these lessons are? I was up to speed in a fraction of the time compared to the books I am studying. This teacher is very, very good and I hope the lessons are expanded. Well worth the $$$.

Good App. BUT it is in desperate need of more “courses”. Right now it only covers chords and melodies. It would be great if we could also get practice in for inversions and modes. But with what was given I was able to memorize things like relative minors easily. My only other suggestion is to put an option for continuous practice on an area rather than stopping after 30 seconds intervals or whatever it is. Overall great app and it would be worth the money if it had more courses.

Gate Way To Notes. In 3 Days I learned about Notes and Scales. The quizzes drove me crazy like a relentless teacher that wanted to make sure I knew my notes and scales. I like the most how every quiz is different, even if you try to start the quiz over.

Experienced musician, beginner theorist. I’ve been piano for years. Picking up a bit of theory here as there as it was necessary but never really diving in. I recently decided I wanted to elevate my playing, and was recommended to check out Waay as a fun, easy way to learn theory. So far I’ve loved it. Simple, bite sized lessons I can do in my phone in my free time. Great app!!

Clear, concise easy to understand basic theory lessons. Very well organized intro to basic music theory with guided skill building exercises. Very clearly presented with a logical flow that builds on what you’ve learned. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I was able to learn in just a few days. This app demystifies music basics for beginners and tracks your progress as your knowledge base increases. I highly recommend it.

Why would this be a subscription?. And seven bucks a month at that. The cost quickly outpaces even the priciest of music apps, and punishes you for wanting to keep practicing over time. For educational and skill building content, just no sense.

Fantastic. I don't usually leave reviews, but this App is SO GOOD, so easy to comprehend - I am super happy i discovered this gem! Highlyyy recommend to all beginners-song writers!

Exactly what I needed. This app is incredible. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been wanting to learn music theory for a while and have been putting it off. Recently, I’ve had the desire to dig deep and really learn music theory. I was searching for a course that was clear, concise, and guided. This app fits the bill 100%. The lessons are very well presented and the exercises are a fun way to test and hone your skills. The developer has done an amazing job by gamifying the process and making your progress feel tangible and substantial. Then there’s the cherry on top: this app is a one-time purchase and the developer doesn’t collect your data! Seriously, this kind of honest business practice is unheard of these days on the App Store. A big thank you to the developer, and his two beagles! SUPPORT THIS MAN!

What a find!. I’m so glad I chose this app. I’ve tried so many times in the past to learn music theory and have never been successful UNTIL NOW. In just one week, I understand how to build major and minor scales quickly and identify their chords. I’m now working on chord progressions and can’t wait to start applying all of this knowledge to my guitar playing and maybe even my own songs (something I would never have dared to think about before!). The lessons are clear and concise and the exercises are very helpful. I highly recommend Waay for anyone who wants to finally understand music theory! Best money I’ve spent in a very long time.

Buyer beware - carefully read course content. I purchased this based on a recommendation. I found it helpful until I discovered the app cost only covered one lesson, and another lesson would be another $4.99. Content is limited for the price. Edit: to rephrase the criticism, I knew the additional lesson would be an additional fee. My criticism is aimed at the volume of content in the lesson. Not worth $4.99 and I am definitely not purchasing the additional lesson. I find other apps offer significantly more value for the cost.

🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. This app is rad. I’ve been using it for about an hour and I’m trippin out at how fast I’m understanding theory. Way to break it down in an extremely easy to understand way. 👍🏼

I never usually review apps…. …But this app singlehandedly reignited my love for making music. I can say that because of this app I can finally write a song in whatever key I want without hesitation.

Absolutely Essential for Musicians. I’ve been playing guitar and bass for years now, always just playing what sounded good. I knew music theory was the next step but it confused the heck out of me and I didn’t want to pay a bunch of money for a class. This app made learning theory so easy and simple, my playing has never been better and I feel so much more confident in my music-making ability. Totally worth the money and with what I know about the app now, I would be willing to pay even more for it.

Intermediate musicians BEWARE!. I am an intermediate musician and I purchased this app to brush up on the basics. Once you pass the first course which is pretty simple, they want another five bucks to continue! This initial course maybe worth it for the beginner, but if you’re like me, this is not very much schooling for five dollars. I completed it in less than an hour.

Highly underrated app. I think this app is one of the best in the App Store for music theory. I don’t usually comment or give ratings ever, but I just have to make people more aware. I feel that they took a lot of time to make the videos and the games they have to make sure that you actually understand and memorize the lesson all together. I have looked at many videos on music theory and the circle of fifth and I feel that this is the most understanding way that it has been broken down to me. How you can’t continue the lesson unless you’ve reached a certain quota is perfect. The way the lessons are broken down into 5-6 minute videos is great for someone like me who loses his attention too easily. It always kept me coming back and wanting to learn more. The only problem I can see coming from the app is that maybe main hub screen is a little boring and can make you think that you aren’t gonna have fun while learning but I was really surprised when I started watching the first video. I hope to see more lessons in the future from this app!

Simply fantastic. Although I’ve never left an app review before, I feel compelled to voice my support for this program. This is by far the cleanest, simplest explanation of basic music theory that I’ve ever encountered. The tutorials, exercises, and overall course design are all excellent. After years of playing various instruments, I finally feel equipped with the fundamentals of theory—something I’d always avoided because it seemed too difficult to learn on my own. I’ve enjoyed this app so much that I could go on and on praising it, but in short: it’s certainly the most worthwhile app purchase I’ve ever made. Thank you!

Amazing!. Love it! Got it just the other day and I’m already seeing improvements in my grasp of theory.

Awesome For Songwriters. Worth the 10 dollars all the way! This app is organized and designed for you to learn quickly. Perfect for my needs!

Amazing. My first 30mins with Waay was great. Music theory explained in a simple, practical way. Video is on point and exercise very helpful. Worth it!

Perfect. Functional music theory.. Easily the best app for learning fundamental and functional music theory.

What you are looking for!!!. I’ve tried a few before- there is no other theory app out there like this. It’s terrific. Useful for mature kids and adults alike. Simple and well explained. Get it!!

Great App!. This app is great for learning music theory in a fun way. It teaches you the theory in a a simple and easy to understand way too. This may not be fair but I want to give a four star to encourage the app developers to add a feature that I thing would complete the app; That is to have the notes on a virtual piano. Because why forgo the opportunity to both learn theory and solidify our knowledge of where all the notes lie on the piano? Great job developer guys and gals?

Useful. It’s a well made beginner app to learn how to quickly recognize chords and keys. I paid for one month to check it out and I learned some useful tips and tricks. However, it is not worth the price or the monthly fee. $10 purchase is sufficient for this game and tutorial. There is a wealth of free information online so the app is really not necessary. You’d get more bang for the buck taking a music theory class at a community college.

Awesome app. Definitely put some care and very thoughtful. Started this app a couple weeks ago and I love it. Excellent exercises and they change every time you redo the exercise. I would highly recommend this app

Absolutely the best!. I just finished the first lesson, and I’m SO happy. I’ve played (memorized) songs on the guitar for years, but never could understand guitar theory. I’ve had several people try to explain it, but it never made sense. It just seemed so overwhelming. It was a foreign language that I couldn’t seem to learn. But Alex explains everything so well, and in such a common sense way, that I finally get it! After YEARS of trying. Best app ever! Thanks Alex!

really great app...well.... ...up until the sharps part after circle of fifths. went right over my head. no way to dig myself out to make any sense of it or pace it out either. i know this is my ignorance talking, but as a beginner, it feels like i just learned how to add and subtract, and now im being thrown algebra. i keep staring at it and i still do not understand what the hell ive just been told.

Unbelievable. I’ve learned more in 3 days than in the last 20 years, no joke, in regards to music theory. It’s always seemed confusing and mysterious. But put it in a game with some thoughtful dialogue and - what do you know? Suddenly it makes sense since you are actually applying it to something. Now, I’m not saying I memorized everything - but with the formulas provided in understanding the circle of 5th’s (finally!) and 4th’s and the magic chord formulas…honestly it’s like the light was turned on in my brain.

I finally understand theory. This App is an organized way to engage with theory instead of just trying to cram-style memorize things. The exercises helped me actually memorize instead of just staring at flash cards or trying to cram it all. Do yourself a favor and just try the month like me, at $7 it’s a steal to finally have the understanding I was always looking for.

Really Useful and enjoyable. I really like this app. The approach to learning is easy to understand and engaging. I wonder if you guys would make an ear training app that teaches melodic/harmonic minor and the like if you haven’t already.

Efficient, answered my gaps in knowledge. Very clear and engaging since it’s so efficient in teaching what matters. Really worth it.

Fabulous. Hands down, best app for learning music theory. Has helped me take my guitar playing to a new level.

Seventh Chords Are NOT included in CHORDS In-App Purchase. If you're an intermediate or advanced musician looking for an app to practice chords, scales, modes, etc. this app only covers the basics (CHORDS in-app purchase does not include Seventh Chords). Would be excellent if Seventh Chords and (practical) ascending melodic minor and harmonic minor scales were included. Hopefully, an additional course/update will be added in the near future. The app is a great start for beginners (covers basic intervals, triads, Major and natural minor scales.)

Amazing Learning Tool. I’ve played guitar for many years and always struggled with music theory. Waay made it so I finally grasped the circle of fifths and was able to apply it, which has really vaulted my playing and understanding to another level.

I think I can do this!. Thanks for making this app. I’ve wanted to learn theory for a long time. This is making it fun. ❤️

Easy and fun. I’ve always felt like I had a mental block for learning theory. This app is just amazing. Feel like in a while this block will totally melt. Thanks for creating this

Kinesthetic Learners this is for you!. This app is very good at explaining things out. I recommend taking notes of your own. This app has been exponentially helpful.

Great learning tool. I studied music theory in college and I’ve gained more from this app in a few days than a few semesters in class. There are just a few updates I would love to see to make the app more enjoyable to use. Examples are a erase button for the quizzes. It’s very frustrating attempting to correct mistakes. It would also be nice to have access to the segment rules once the timer runs out. When you need a refresher, you have to completely exit the quiz to review the short paragraph from the lesson. Other than that, I highly recommend this app to anyone wanting to learn music theory in an organized fashion.

Great App. As someone who has tried to learn music theory but gave up due to confusion this app really broke it down for me, especially with the scales. Really appreciate the care put into this. Already bought the chords lesson! Thanks!

Superb app of a superb developer. The application’s content is great as the developer support is great, kind and outstanding. Thank you very much for the such a great resource to study music theory.

Great for just beginners. I’m 20 years old I’ve never played an instrument or taken a music class I had no idea what anything meant when I started but this has made it really easy to start learning very happy (:

Well made app. Way too pricey.. One of the best made apps I've ever used. Price is way too high for the basic information that's given. But I enjoyed checking out the free lesson.

The best most awesome music theory app.. This app is actually fun and so useful!! So happy I found it, this is the one your looking for! Easy to digest music theory without the fluff you see on every other app! Seriously give this a shot because it changed my life when it comes to understanding music theory.

Great job. I really like the pacing and organization of this program. The scale information was very concise and exercises great for any level. I look forward to progressing!

Great way to explore 🎼theory. Comprehensive instructions. Challenging questions. Changing and engaging lessons. Ways to keep track of your progress. What’s not to love???…

Love these courses!!. I use the app as a theory refresher every few months; they are the best!!

Amazing for learning music theory. One of the best apps or ways in general to learn music theory, would highly recommend!!!

The memorization app I needed!. As someone learning music theory on guitar, I was looking for a way to commit everything to memory: scales, accidentals, intervals, chords etc. This is the perfect way to work on those skills when not in front on your instrument. I almost went down the path of learning to make an app myself just to create an easy way to quiz myself. So glad I found Waay first.

First time its clicked!. I’ve tried to learn theory in the past and concepts do always stick but I’ve never had it come together really. So far, this is looking very promising!

Great addition to learning music theory!. Music theory can be and is very complicated. Anything that adds fun while learning it is a plus. It’s all about the reinforcement of scales, intervals and notes. This app makes it fun, easy and my favorite go-to when I’m waiting in line. Perfect app for all music theory students! AAA+

The key that finally opened the door. I struggled for YEARS with music theory, everyone kept raving about how simple it is, and I always felt confused and stubborn with anything regarding music theory. However I owe everything to this app for finally unlocking the door, it explained everything easily and effortlessly and now I’m able to learn even more theory after using this as my building block. If you still don’t understand or get frustrated do not give up! I even deleted this app from my phone for a year, came back and now I’m finally understanding of music theory. Thank you to the creators of this app!

Clever way to understand base theory. The developer - Alex - has obviously spent a lot of time thinking about how to present music theory. I have many books but never understood the circle of fifths like this. The instructional videos are friendly and encouraging. I can totally recommend this App. Well done!

Engaging and informative!. Excellent app to learn the basics and apply in songwriting straight away. Really short, sharp lessons with lots of little practise activities that keep you motivated, got a little bit addicted to it already!

Perfect for beginners. Great app man, well done

Music theory - made simple. For me, it is getting back to the basics that is important, as I find as I advance I keep asking simple questions like in a G major Scale why is the C chord called the 4th Chord. Then I know I got to go back to basics…..

It helps!. The app is very easy to use, the lessons flow well and are quite succinct. Definitely for beginners, or for musicians looking to brush up/refresh on their skills. The quizzes are fun, and actually do help. The only thing is there isn't a great deal of musical jargon used throughout and this might become tricky for beginners looking to learn some music theory to apply later. However it is all accurate. You may also need a pen and paper just to write out a few things like the circle of fifths or the order of flats/sharps. It takes a little while to memorize and writing it down at first may help. Perhaps a short test on the circle of fifths and the order might be worthwhile adding.

Excellent. Everything I needed as a mature student. All the foundation work that now makes sense. Being able to repeat any lesson which varies the questions each time ensures you are not just memorising the question base and forces you to apply the knowledge. This makes my real life lessons so much easier.

Best music theory app out there!. I personally love the teaching method and how you start at one point which then develops into a progress journey instead of being shown 100’s of options and tasks Thanks for developing this app!

Great app with excellent quiz’s. Not only are the concepts explained clearly but they’re reinforced regularly with great quiz questions. Nice work.

Amazing app and worth every penny!. It’s obvious a lot of time, love and energy has gone into this app. It’s very well thought out, easy to follow and keeps you coming back for more. The developer is super friendly and answers any questions you have. It’s clear he has a real passion for what he does and genuinely wants to help out. Awesome work all round 👍

Wow!. I don't usually write reviews, but this app blew me away. Well made, clear courses, and great exercises. I am hoping that Alex will add more courses in the future!

Great app. I love well designed products so when a friend showed me this new music theory app I was caught by surprise. I never thought that i would get into music theory but i guess all it took was good design and just the right amount of gamification. well done !

Makes so much sense!. Finally! A practical approach to learning theory. Well done Waay!!

Immersive application. Although I’ve taken voice lessons, violin, and guitar, Eventually taking music theory 1, theory 2, and harmony in college, I never knew how to apply those concepts and they eventually got lost. I kept playing guitar and singing in bands but was discouraged that I couldn’t get past my ceiling. This app is perfect because it does what it claims to. It doesn’t stop at just content but provides fun, fresh ways to apply that content, which is the path mastery. Understanding AND application. I’m actually excited to write songs again and this app is greatly simplifying and speeding that process along.

Great course. Easy to understand, easy to use.

Great app, could use iCloud sync for progress. I use iPhone and an iPad so it’d be nice if my progress synced across all my devices. Otherwise I love the app.

Amazing app. Worth every penny

I thought I paid for the app. But it was only for one of the courses. The app is good but don’t expect to learn much unless you’ve never played an instrument before. With the melody course you will basically learn where to put the sharps and flats on a staff according to the key. Not worth the price in my opinion.

Crazy. Probably the best music theory educational app out there!

Music theory demystified!. I red an introductory book on music theory but needed a fun way to apply this knowledge.Explanation are really clear and just added to what I knew. The app is so beautiful and fun than I look forward to use it.Well done!

Helpful. Love this app. Helps you understand music theory and tests you on what you have learned.

Finally, it all makes sense. I am a hobbyist musician (at best) who has been playing guitar for over 25 years. Despite all that time enjoying the sounds that came from the instrument, and even writing several of my own tunes, it was all done by trial and grueling error- “this and that sound kinda good together- yay”. Commonly enough I would get stuck in certain parts, or otherwise not understand how to achieve certain results or resolve the sequence in a way that felt satisfying. I had learned the basic major and minor scales, pentatonic and blues scales. I knew my basic chords and way around the fretboard. But what I had never managed to wrap my head around was this seemingly intimidating thing called the circle of fifths. I had watched several videos on YouTube over the years, and even had a cardboard slide in a drawer somewhere… but for whatever reason the concepts never managed to comprehensively sink in or feel tangible. But all of that has changed after progressing through Waay’s very synchronous and digestible courses. Waay’s approach to the material somehow managed to break down and communicate these concepts in a format I could actually comprehend and apply. I now find myself going back and seeing my favorite songs as if for the first time… now realizing why some chord progressions work so well to shape the feel of the song or support the melodies and harmonies. I am also going back and reworking some of my own tunes, and am increasingly feeling the benefits of these courses. I am immensely grateful to Ten Kettles for producing such a well designed, succinct, and affordable app for those out there who, like me, may have struggled to get off the ground with this material. I cannot recommend this app enough, and am already preparing to go ahead and work my way back through it a second time just for funzies. I am also hopeful that Ten Kettles may some day produce further courses which build on the material already presented; such as how to utilize modes, borrowed chords, and transition between keys.

Great!. I feel like it's helping me catch on to theory in a way that I wasn't able to before.

Ummm???. Although I appreciate the game style learning, however I questioned the accuracy of the scores. For example: I know I did horrible on some phases of the games but nevertheless the program said I did a great job

Love it. This app is great for learning basic theory. Alex teaches in a very understandable and easy to digest way. Love the app

Why would this be a subscription?. And seven bucks a month at that. The cost quickly outpaces even the priciest of music apps, and punishes you for wanting to keep practicing over time. For educational and skill building content, just no sense.

Useful tool for beginners and intermediate musicians. Very helpful with repetition helps with muscle memory

😍. I really love this app!! I learned a lot, really quickly, and I'm typically a slower learner. So grateful I found it and I'm excited about course 3!

I really like this. I really am enjoying this app. I'm up to counting flats using circle of fourths which is something I couldn't do at all yesterday. I am giving four stars because it looks like I'm almost to the end of the course and I was hoping there would be more. I really like practicing with it though. Hope there's more after this😀

Absolutely phenomenal. This is better than any YouTube video, podcast, or music theory book I have read. This truly helps you find an actionable way to put music theory to practice. That was always my frustration over the years I’ve been trying to learn more theory, the application of what I read what hard to put into practice. Within 48 hours using this app I have actually comprehended what is being taught with this app far beyond any previous comprehension for past products. After using this app my other music theory books make more sense, and my favorite part is Waay provides tips and short cuts for figuring out scales within seconds. Honestly they could charge more than double the amount and it would be totally worth it. Thanks to the folks who made this.

Misleading. Lessons are pay per “course”. You learn pretty much nothing about melodies, and the information is terribly basic. If you feel like $5 a “course” is worth it, go ahead, but it’s a very disappointing app.

Amazing!. Love it! Got it just the other day and I’m already seeing improvements in my grasp of theory.

Incredible. Very well done TenKettles. - Extremely elegant User Interface - Loads of great Lessons - Exercises which challenge my music theory knowledge but are fun - continual improvement in exercises after completing: try to obtain 2 and 3 stars which re-enforced my knowledge HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Perfect. Functional music theory.. Easily the best app for learning fundamental and functional music theory.

Amazing. My first 30mins with Waay was great. Music theory explained in a simple, practical way. Video is on point and exercise very helpful. Worth it!

Fantastic. I don't usually leave reviews, but this App is SO GOOD, so easy to comprehend - I am super happy i discovered this gem! Highlyyy recommend to all beginners-song writers!

Love this app!. It’s been a huge help for me.

Amazing for learning music theory. One of the best apps or ways in general to learn music theory, would highly recommend!!!

Best app for theory.. This app has done more for me than Jesus.

I think I can do this!. Thanks for making this app. I’ve wanted to learn theory for a long time. This is making it fun. ❤️

why it's so expensive now. I can't afford that

Love these courses!!. I use the app as a theory refresher every few months; they are the best!!

Helpful!. Very helpful and easy to use.

Encourages chord fluency. I like this app because of the fact that it goes beyond teaching the facts of chord construction to speed drilling those facts until they become something you don't have to think about (fluency).

music theory applied. A fun and fast way to learn music theory and apply it to song writing.

Fabulous. Hands down, best app for learning music theory. Has helped me take my guitar playing to a new level.

Loving this app!. A great review for all my piano students - and these explanations are clear enough for anyone who has little or NO experience with reading music! Upbeat and easy to listen to and work with.

Rad. Super helpful

Good entry to theory. Nice app for learning the basics of music theory on the go.

Efficient, answered my gaps in knowledge. Very clear and engaging since it’s so efficient in teaching what matters. Really worth it.

Amazing App for Theory Practice. I’ve looked for an app like this for SO long!

Such a great way to LEARN. I have watched many youtube videos and read many music theory websites to start learning music theory but this app was the best, least confusing and most intuitive way to start learning the fundamentals of music theory. I hope they keep releasing more apps so I can keep on learning. I HIGHLY recommend Waay.

Askhat. Perfect app. Recommended

Content/price doesn’t match. I would probably consider it to go for one time pay, but subscription, really, for the price of Netflix….

really great app...well.... ...up until the sharps part after circle of fifths. went right over my head. no way to dig myself out to make any sense of it or pace it out either. i know this is my ignorance talking, but as a beginner, it feels like i just learned how to add and subtract, and now im being thrown algebra. i keep staring at it and i still do not understand what the hell ive just been told.

Helpful little practice tool. This was the right gradient for practicing the different scales. I did the drills over and over until I was confident about it before moving on.

Here's what's new: • New exercises. Three exercises have been added (and another two updated) in the Melodies and Chords courses. These exercises will help you develop a strong foundation for the order of flats/sharps and fast fifths. • Completion screens I. If you're trying to refresh a three-star skill but only get two stars, Waay will now more clearly tell you why the skill wasn't refreshed. • Completion screen II. Once you're finished a set of corrections, you can now return to the original exercise with one tap (Thanks, Jacob!). You'll also get more specific feedback on your performance (Thanks, Andrew!). • Skipped taps. When scales were entered quickly, a button press could sometimes not be caught. This issue has now been fixed. (Thanks, Lillian and Andrew!) • A few other minor tweaks, fixes, and additions. I hope you like the new update! Please feel free to get in touch anytime with feedback or questions about Waay. You can tap "Get in Touch" in the sidebar (under More) or go to tenkettles.com/contact. -Alex
