Through the Ages Comments & Reviews 2026
App as game assistant. We use the app (with the expansion) to play our (literal/physical) tabletop game. The app controls the card row, the event deck and colony bidding. Everything we do on the tabletop we mirror on the app. The app is set up to play we two online. The app shows all resources and statistics in real time. We have no disputes as the app is the rule keeper and keeps us from losing track and allows us to try actions and subsequently back out as needed. The status screens of all cards in the game by age let’s us play a better game. The log allows us to never forget what we did and allows us to easily correct errors in tabletop play. The app is very well done and very easy to use. The graphics and UI are very well designed. Kudos to Chvátil and his team for a great game and a great app.
Latest update made the game less fun to play. EDIT: Podcasts work again after latest update. Most excellent. I used to be able to listen to podcasts while playing, but now this game kills all audio playing from other apps. And the rendering is now causing crashing. I can tell it speeds up frame rate during animations which looks pretty when it works, but if you play with the hard AI the CPU still kills the frame rate so it is kind of pointless. But as it is a turn based game, who cares about frame rate? Wish I could downgrade.
Addictive. I was looking for a turn-based strategy game that I can play for 10 minutes at a time, or keep me entertained on a long flight, and this fits the bill perfectly. I thought it was a bit too challenging at first, even on “easy” games, but now that I have the hang of it, I win about 25% of the time, which keeps me coming back for another try. The game offers a ton of variation. You can try numerous strategies, the AI isn’t predictable, and the variety of cards make every game unique. My only wish is that the easy mode was a little easier, especially for a first-time player.
Excellent but a few rules are obscured. I am a huge Clash of Cultures fan and was looking for a new 4x style game. Tried the app before picking up the board game. The rule book is very good and is easily accessible mid-game and I use it a lot. My only real complaint is a lack of understanding around the events that pop up at the end of the game. Plus you can't see the board while they're resolving so you can't figure out why they scored the way they did. So with minor complaints, I still give it a 5 star. Quite an excellent app.
Don’t purchase until connectivity issues are fixed. When working properly, this game is really well done. Great interface, intuitive, true to the board game but with worthwhile digital improvements. It should get 5 stars. Connectivity issues, however, make this a frustrating purchase. At least once a day over the past several months I’ve found it impossible to play because the server can’t handle the traffic. This is especially frustrating when playing a live game where your failure to play results in your forfeit. If I were buying this for the first time I’d wait until someone I trust told me the connectivity issues were resolved. Until then you’ll just be paying for something that works only part of the time.
Entertaining Civ-Style Game, Needs Balanced Warfare. For those of us who enjoy Civ-style strategy games, Through The Ages is a solid multiplayer card game that provides a fun overview of the usual Civ experience. Choose your leaders and follow your path to greatness over the course of the ages. Great as a solo game versus AI, or timed multiplayer versus other players worldwide. BUT: The biggest issue with this game is that warfare is woefully imbalanced. The most common path to victory appears to be winning the early race to largest army - combine that with a healthy number of aggression or warfare events, and you are practically guaranteed victory. The problem as I see it is that aggression is an all or nothing event. If the aggressor wins, there is no cost to that player whatsoever, no matter how close the victim comes to a successful defense. In warfare, the spoils go to the person with the stronger military - attacker OR defender. I would like to see these same rules applied in the aggression events.
Great version of a great game. My wife and I have played the board game version of this game and love it, but there is a lot to keep track of with bonuses and all the different types of resources. Also, we have two little kids who would love nothing more than to chow down on the bricks. This app does a wonderful job keeping everything straight, removes setup/cleanup time, and takes away the choking hazard! Five stars. And the expansion is worth it.
Amazing - please add Peaceful Variant!. This is an incredible implementation of a great game. One of the best! It’s easier to play than the physical game because it takes care of the accounting. I got this app when it was new and the developers said a peaceful variant would come most likely. We’ve had an expansion but still no peaceful variant option and I’m losing hope that this is a priority for the developers. PLEASE??? I really only want to play the peaceful variant and I really only want to use the app b/c it takes care of the accounting. But.... I can’t. Life is hard... I know...
Excellent adaptation. Through the Ages board game is a ton of fun, but it also has a lot of rules and a lot of triggers you can forget. The app does a truly excellent job smoothing this over. The tutorial is excellent at teaching you the game, and has a nice personal tone to keep the tutorial engaging. While playing, you can undo all the way back to the last-revealed piece of information (pretty much a whole turn). The app tracks what cards you submitted to the event deck and if that’s the only one left, it warns you that you “know” that event is coming. If you try to pass your turn, it will remind you about military tactics you can play or copy and when you might lose resources because you didn’t use enough of them that turn. When taking actions, a dialog pops up that lets you choose how to take that action (e.g. submit this colony to the event deck or colonize it by removing Christopher Columbus from play). Everything is just very smooth. I don’t have a single suggestion on improvement.
Make custom games more custom please!. Absolutely love the digital version of this game! My only suggestion is if you could give us a little bit more freedom in the custom custom game settings. I want the option to make my games longer, and do wacky stuff with the settings kind of like you have the challenge modes set up. Users love more freedom! Other then that, this is everything I would hope a “Through the Ages,” digital version would be! Excellent work and I look forward to see what else the team can dream up for the future of this magnificent board game.
IMHO best digital board game port ever. As both an avid tabletop gamer and someone who owns ever digital port out there (also own the physical games too), I can say without a doubt this is the best iPad board game/port I have ever played. Extremely true to the real game, amazing graphic design, intuitive UI and mechanics feel tight and fluid. This is a must have for all board game enthusiasts. Two small issues that I think bring it down a little- (a) cannot add AI players to local pass and play, (b) there should be an option to hide military cards when playing with pass and play. This can be a real issue as in the real game watching your opponents turn is extraordinarily important to playing well. I really wish you could turn the cards over with a click (like having a hand of cards). If these issues were fixed a strong 5 stars!!
Great game, app well done. First off, yes... Through The Ages is a difficult BOARD game. I think people giving poor reviews based on difficulty has zero relevance here when commenting on the app version. The difficulty has nothing to do with the app itself. The user interface is well done. Adaptation of the billions (exaggerating) of cards are easy to use and will be able to play mostly without having to read any ‘what buttons do what’ guides. Majority of things going on in the game are intuitive to those familiar with the board game. Some minor things I’d like to see done differently: 1) Allow options for choosing the ‘Simple’, ‘Advanced’ or ‘Full Game’. 2) Allow options for game variants that are available in the actual board game rules. 3) Use actual player board from the board game, or at least the option. While this isn’t a big deal for people unfamiliar with the board game... I imagine a lot of board gamers would appreciate it (we game nerds prefer substance over style, and don’t need flair to enjoy a board game). Wonderful game, which does have a high degree of learning to strategize, let alone master (that is a good thing). If you want a quick and easy game, there are plenty of other board game apps available. But if you want an app version of one of the highest rated and loved board games around... this is it!
A Great Adaptation. I really enjoy this game. The board game is good, but this adaptation removes all the tedium of cube manipulation and status tracking, so the player can focus on playing. Where the board game can take six hours, this can be played solitaire in an hour or so. It’s a deep game. When you’re learning it, you may find that you quit after a few turns because you just realize you made a serious mistake two turns ago. The computer doesn’t care. Learn away! The adaptation greatly increases your situational awareness, showing you your income and assets. In just a click away, you can see how you compare to your rivals.
Buy it, just buy it. If you know about this board game, then you have already bought this without needing to look at reviews. If you have not, then this is the perfect way to learn. This is one of the best board games ever made. It is in the top 20 board games TWICE (once for the original edition and for this edition). The tutorial for this game is spectacular. It makes this quite complex game easy to learn. That being said, this is a challenging game. This is not your monopoly or clue; this is a game for a more “civilized” era. The AI is tough, and you probably wont win for a while. Every game is till extremely satisfying. I hope this review helps, along with the other countless 5 star reviews. This is the best thing to happen to digital board games in a long time.
Best Card-driven Civilization digitalized board game. I’m a big board & card game enthusiast with a fairly large collection (compared w/ normal folks) and this digitalized version might even be better than its original 2nd Edition tabletop version. This is easily my favorite Civilization-themed board game and I love playing it online with my real-life gamer friends. This digital version allows for the near perfect info of tracking all the game decks and each opponents’ civilization, all at your very fingertips. Now, the new expansion allows for more variety and mix of cards to keep the game fresh with every new session. I wholeheartedly recommend this Civ based game as it has some learning curve but its really worth the ascent.
Great game, super polished app!. This game has quite a learning curve but when you get the hang of it its great fun! Not only is the game well done but the app is very polished and feature packed. The online part of the app is very well done as is the game itself. Convince your friends to get this game and learn together. The 24 hour turns makes it easy to play over time. Me and my friends did this and we are always talking about and learning about it. Awesome!!
Excellent tutorial, great combo of luck and strategy. This is a great game themed optimization/luck/strategy game. You can pick it up at any time to continue playing against AI players, then put it down instantly whenever your elevator arrives or whatever, to continue later. There are no additional abilities or DLCs to purchase later - you get the whole game for the original purchase price that is well worth it. The tutorial is outstanding and a lot of fun. There are three levels of AI difficulty - after maybe 100 games I’m still using easy AI but I can tell I’m getting better and will move up soon. You can also play online against human components if you know you’ve got 40+ minutes to kill, and that’s great, too. This is one of the best of the best of the Euro games that have come to the fore in the last 15 years. A beautifully balanced and entertaining game that incorporates the best concepts of modern board games - worker placement, strategy, random elements, extremely high replayability, created by a master board game designer. Truthfully, the digital version is better than the board game it emulates, because the digital game automatically handles housekeeping tasks and allows you the option to play on your own against AI players (which means you’ll be much better prepared when you later play the physical board game with real in-person humans). This has been my main iPhone/iPad game for 3 months now. I highly recommend it!
Must buy for boardgame fans. IMHO, it is better than the board game. I even like it better than Sid Meier’s Civilization. Perfect execution, wonderful AI and the most fun tutorial for a board game ever. Expect a learning curve but it is worth it. And please just ignore the negative reviews, especially the one from someone who calls himself a “gaming vet” but who can’t beat the game on easy. That review says more about the writer the game. The game is challenging but if you pay attention to what is going on then you will be beating the AI on hard pretty quickly, and you will love doing so.
Great implementation of this outstanding boardgame. This takes away all the fiddly accounting of the boardgame and adds a much improved visual representation of your civilization as well as a very intuitive interface. Pleasantly surprised by how well the developers have managed to transfer such a rich and complex game to an iOS platform. This is going to become a top game for me, as I am already loving it. For those of you who enjoy the original boardgame, you will not be disappointed by this version. In fact you will probably think it's an improvement. For those new to the game, the tutorial and reminders throughout the game make it very approachable and allows you to feel immersed in the game without feeling overwhelmed. Be warned, however, that this is a subtle and complex game so be prepared to feel challenged!
Bought the app to teach me how to play. My husband loves board games. I enjoy them as long as I understand them. The rules to this game confused me resulting in the game sitting on the shelf for over a year. This app continues to teach me new strategies and techniques without the frustration of having my husband tell me I am too slow. Once I understand it completely I will kill my husband while playing. Takes the frustration out of learning (to an extent as it took me two days to beat easy). Addiction and fun as all board games should be!
I’ve discovered an amazing game!. I’ve just read a review criticizing this game for being too hard (even on easy level). Well, people have to understand that this game has been around for a while and holds one of the highest complexity rates on he top board games ever created. Even if you are used to gaming, TTA has a lot of depth in it and it takes more than a few plays to get used to its mechanics. It’s a ver rewarding game if you are up for the challenge. This is not a game you will win on your first or second match. The AI, to be honest, is not that strong, but it’s enough to give most people at least some challenge. I’m not a good player at all, but after 20 matches or so I could beat the hardest level heads up. I still occasionally lose as well. This app is very well designed. I can play even on the tiny iPhone screen and keep track of all my stuff and everything the opponents are doing. Also. It runs on my old iPad 2!! To sum up, this app changed my mind about this game. I own a copy since it’s release, but before playing it over 50 times on the app it was just an ok game for me. Now, after so many plays I am able to realize how well designed TTA is and why it does deserve to be on the top board games of all time. Since I’ve played this over 50 times and every match takes about an hour, I’d say my 10 bucks were a very good investment.
Great AI. I really enjoy this game—very strategic, nice level of complexity, lots of options regarding game play, and many paths to victory. One of my favorite features is the AI. I have other games of this genre that I really like, but they have a sucky AI, so the only way you can have a good game is to play live players. The AI for this game at the advanced level is good enough to give me a run for my money every time—I probably win about half the time after playing a lot of games. When I first started, without having played the game before, the AI kicked my tail, even at the intermediate level. I like that challenge!
It’s worth $10. I’ve never played the board game before. Just know it’s #3 in the top 100 board games of all time. So it’s a must have really. The app does a great implementation of what I know the game is. I can’t appreciate as much as people who have played it on board but it is fantastic! The tutorial honestly alone is worth the play. It teaches you the basic fundamentals really well but you will still be kind of confused on a few things. Honestly I don’t know how I won my first game against the AI but I did on Easy but still with a challenge. With much still to learn but I had a great first experience. I’ll be playing this a lot! Great job to the DEVS!
Makes a daunting boardgame accessible. Love board games & love Vlaada but the bookkeeping in this, otherwise deliciously rich, boardgame makes playing the tabletop version almost impossible. Enter this gem of a digital version, taking away all the tedious bookkeeping & leaving only the fun brainy core puzzle that's worth getting lost into. Inspite of such a complicated & fussy (in a good way) source material, the UX is bug free & excellent, which just shows the amount of effort & care that went into designing this digital version. Would wholeheartedly recommend!
Responsive service and oh yeah - an amazing game!. I recently began looking for digital boardgames to play with my crew. We immediately thought of TTA but were afraid to conquer the learning curve. We started by going through the tutorial - only to see that it crashed due to the recent iOS update. We reached out for support and had a reply within a day or so that the dev team was working to fix the bug. Within a week, they had and now the crew and I can start to learn this amazing game better. Thx so much and wow - this truly is the standard that other digital board game translations can look up to. Amazing.
Best Board Game App Ever. Insanely wonderful app. Allows you to take back parts of your move step by step, so you can try things out before committing. Does all the heavy lifting when it comes to the fiddly stuff. Very cool sounds, too. I usually like the physical board games better than the app version, but this one’s the exception … I own the board game, but I only play the app version, because it’s perfect. Phenomenal job.
No good, at first. I wrote a review before that wasn’t complementary. Truth is though, I continued to play after a bit of time passed. Was still met with some frustration. But I did start to learn how to play the game better. And I have to say that it does play like a board game. Which is to say that sometimes you lose because of bad luck or poor decisions. Yet I keep playing. The challenge is addictive. The only thing it’s missing from a board game is the goofing off and silly banter exchanged between friends and family. Which I find is half the fun of a good board game. In short, I will reprise my earlier review, and say that this game can be fun. If you don’t mind losing some. But that just makes your victories that much more satisfying. I left my earlier review below, in case anyone can relate to how I felt before. I've been playing this game for a few days now a lot. But no matter how hard I try, I have a hard time winning against one easy opponent. Maybe I'm missing something since I've never played the board game. I usually do pretty good at strategy games, but this game doesn't click with me. Now I'm just passed I spent ten bucks on it.
Love this game, but lately, it crashes non-stop!. At first, I thought I had wasted money on this game but the reality was I simply didn’t get it. After giving it some time, I fell in love with it and have an amazing time with the challenges and learning new strategies. Unfortunately, in the last few weeks (maybe since last update and I didn’t play enough to notice), the game has been crashing excessively. I’m talking like 5 times in 20 min. It will freeze mid-turn, and I’ll need to shut it down and reopen game. I am on a fairly new iPhone 7+, with updated iOS, and I’ve already restarted phone multiple times since noticing the issue so I feel it’s definitely on the game’s end. If this issue is corrected, the game is 5 stars. It’s 100% worth the price point, it’s challenging on many levels and has tons of replay value. I just can’t get through a single game without a freeze or crash anymore, thus the 3 Star review.
Fine implementation. I own a lot of board games both on iPad and in reality. This is a pretty cool game and a very nice implementation. At the hardest level of AI the game provided a real challenge. No glitches with 10 games played. If you like iPad board games played solo, this is a solid choice. This is a very high ranking game on boardgamegeek. I don’t think it would go over well with my tabletop gaming group because of its “take that” mechanic, so I really value getting to play it here.
This app made me buy the board game. While it does take some time to learn, it’s well worth it. The tutorial is extremely helpful and actually very funny. Who thinks to make such an entertaining tutorial? It makes learning such an intricate game much easier. Don’t even try to play without doing that first. You’ll get frustrated and miss out on some witty banter. As far as the game goes, this is probably the most fun I’ve had playing a game in as long as I can remember. So much so that my family has purchased the actual board game now as well. It’s VERY nice and very well-built. There is so much variety available in this game that the replay-ability is very high. I recommend spending a tad more to get the expansion version once you’ve got the original down. It’s even better balanced and adds great new cards, wonders and leaders. If you’re a history buff or just a fellow strategy game-lover, you’re in for a treat!
Best boardgame I’ve got for iOS. And I have quite a few. It helps that Through the Ages is already a fantastic game. I learned it via a play-by-web version that I think was fan-designed. I never quite understood some of the finer points because I’d never played the tabletop version, and I’d find myself facing corruption and/or unrest and wouldn’t know how I’d gotten there. After the (extremely amusing and helpful) tutorial I had figured it all out. And now it’s pretty much the only iOS game I play. There are so many strategies to discover. It consumes my interest completely for the 30ish minutes it takes to play a game vs the AI. And the AI is no slouch, at least if you’re a noob like me. Best $10 I’ve ever spent on a video game on any platform. What are you waiting for, get this!!
One of my favorite board games. I was thrilled to find there is an app for this game. The price tag made me hesitate for a moment, but I could not ask for anything better. There is a more streamlined/app friendly version of the rules, but I chose to stick with the tabletop rules, and it is exactly like the game. If, such as is my case, you don't know anybody with the patience for an hours-long game, then this is for you. If you enjoy Through The Ages, then it is definitely worth it! EXPANSION UPDATE: As soon as I discovered there was an expansion released, I bought it immediately. I was very pleased with the new dimensions added by the leaders and wonders, and they make you rethink a go-to strategy, or even take a course you normally would not have taken with just the base cards. I switched to using the digital rules and they are very minor changes but make online games a breeze. I am looking forward to the physical release of the expansion!
Works well in pandemic. Verified that family sharing works, and we also play with friends who bought the game with their own money. We had one terminal glitch and had to abandon a game but otherwise it’s been pretty flawless over many games. There is a learning curve. I mostly lose, but still have fun. You can play with people you know or people you don’t know or by yourself (against the computer). The pacing is so perfect. You play a hand for five minutes and then walk away while waiting for others to play. My games typically last about a week and provide little moments of fun several times a day when it’s my turn to play. I bought an expansion pack and it’s fun. Unfortunately expansion packs don’t work with family sharing. Devices tested include iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 10, and iPad Pro 2018. Play the tutorial and read the rules - you’ll have less frustration that way.
I am a big fan. I loved the board game and I think the app is a great adaptation. Works on both iPhone and my IPad. No complaints at all, if you are used to friendly games where no one uses military you might be in for a surprise, but after a few games you figure out you better keep up especially in the last age. Basically if the other players are not trying to add culture even by age 2 its clear they are waiting for Napoleon. It’s hard once you fall behind on military or government to recover. So if I had a complaint it would be that. However you can find a few friends that all agree not to be obnoxious. Just like anywhere else on the internet. If you don’t know the game there is a steep learning curve. That isn’t new to the app, the game always takes a little to get used to. I found that the first few games I would lose track of certain things that happened previously. But after a while got used to not seeing the score or so the other players screens on a table in front of me. It’s all there you have know where to look. I say get the game and enjoy.
Amazing, deep, with a funny tutorial. I'm assuming if you are a board game geek, you already bought this game, based on how awesome the physical copy is. For the rest, let me assure you - if you like Civ but wish you could play a complete game in 20-30 minutes, you will love this. If you think it looks intimidating to learn, fear not; this gem has one of the funniest tutorials I've ever played, taking all the worry out of the game. When you play, be prepared to be amazed at the vast options, all valid, towards winning. Buy it. It's worth the money.
Perfect upgrade of the game to Age III. They did an amazing job. It has all the strategy, but it fills in so many holes that could be lost in the conversion. Allowing you to undo actions until you get it just right, reminders of consequences (corruption, uprising, even forgetting the Ocean Liner), and most importantly a streamlined auction for territories. This game got it all right. Even more impressive, the AI is really good. It's rare to say something cannot be improved, but between the original source material and the great implementation to the app, my battery is devoted almost exclusively to this.
Top notch implementation of one of the all time great board games. The civilization style tabletop board game this is based on is not only one of my personal favorites, but as of this writing remains number three on boardgamegeek's all time rankings, and has been high on that list for quite some time. This implementation is one of the nicest I've seen in a game of this depth, giving me no trouble in doing what I want to do (except of course the trouble provided by the game itself, or my opponents). Tutorial is great, single player is great, multiplayer is solid. There are slight changes to timing in order to be more practical with asynchronous play, although even these changes are optional. Overall, even though it can be brutal when you fall behind, which I normally hate, I love love love Through the Ages. This app has made it possible for me to play TTA many more times than I ever could have gotten the board game version to the table. That makes me happy; can you put a price on that? Yes you can, it's $9.99.
Excellent, almost perfect. Bought this on a family vacation as a long-flight time-passer. Hadn’t played the tabletop edition, but my wife’s a fan of it, and this adaption proved faithful enough that she was able to teach me to play. Have had an enormous amount of fun since. Small critique: I miss the ability to mix human and AI opponents in pass-and-play. And I gotta say, I feel disappointed that Sid Meier shows up as a leader. I get the homage/joke, but it feels like he’s occupying a slot that could have gone to anyone other than another white dude. (Nelson Mandela?)
Great Adaptation & Challenging AI. This game is a near-perfect implementation of the board game, and just as fun. The AI plays an extremely strong game considering how complex the game is. I usually play a 4P Expert AI game, and I've only won once so far. I love the challenge. Speaking of which, I haven't attempted any of the "challenge" modes in the game. I'm having too much fun trying to beat the AI. Also, I love the async rules for online play. They speed up what would otherwise be a tedious experience. (Note to readers: the online async rules are optional). The only thing that would make this game better is expansion leaders and wonders. Please release them ASAP!!!! I'm kind of tired of Michaelangelo. Oh, and feedback about the game in general. I feel like early Aggressions are almost non-existent in this edition of the game. I don't think the card discard penalty is strong enough to make players think twice about defending. In the old edition, you had to sacrifice soldiers to defend, which was far more difficult a decision. I understand why the change was made, but it's almost too easy to defend when you are 2-3 points back now. Suggestion: If you choose to discard a card to defend, perhaps each card costs you one military action the following round? That would be a much tougher decision for me, and would increase aggressions without forcing unit sacrifices. Keep up the great work!
Love the translation. TtA Digital is awesome! Solo play is easy. AI works quickly. Tutorial was funny! I own the tabletop game and love the digital version. My only suggestion would be to somehow bring the later age units "closer" to the player. I have a large phone screen and I still find them to be pretty "far away" on my screen. Especially if I don't have buildings in between. Like going from bronze to oil. But that's just cosmetic and personal preference. Love how it translates from the concrete real game to the digital. Easy purchase. Two thumbs up. 5/5.
Strategic Depth Without The Headache. Note: Possible bug? Recently got latest update plus expansion. Several times, in Medium Level Mixed Cards challenge against two computer AI, the International Agreement cars will not allow me to choose cards when I choose the Skip Politics option, even when my hand is empty. Very frustrating :( Actual Review: An obvious labor love. Can be overwhelming to absolute newbs but then the tutorial is funny and informative. Lots of challenges to keep on and offline gamers busy. NOT a Civilization clone, but fans of Sid Meier’s Civ are likely to dig this. I really appreciated the visuals, with upgraded buildings and acquired colonies showing up on the map and really giving you a feel for how far you’ve come. The only bug I’ve run into is the one listed above, as of September 2019. Worth the 10 bucks.
Outstanding implementation of one of my favorite games. Through the Ages is a brilliant game, and this version has exceeded expectations in delivering the experience of play in a surprisingly simple and clear fashion. This is no easy feat given the complexity of the game's rules! Many iOS versions of board games are half-assed and only tolerable because of the quality of the original game, but clearly a lot of love and attention went into making this app live up to TtA's legacy.
Better than the board game. I own the board game, which is a lot of fun despite being seriously flawed: it’s a fidgety game that makes you push pieces to keep track of a million different things, takes forever to set up, has a bit of a learning curve, and takes a long time commitment to play. The app addresses those flaws marvelously; the fidgety parts are taken care of automatically; there is a tutorial that teaches how to play and a series of challenges to ramp up your skill and comfort with the game, and if playing with others you can choose how fast you want to play, whether you have the time to play straight through, or whether you have to work around a job and family life.
(Fixed) Keeps crashing in challenge mode. Edited - The developers got back to me and suggested that my iPad might be older and if I click the option for reduced graphics it might help. It fixed the issue completely and I can’t even tell a difference. I love this game. It is super fun and addictive. It would be 5 stars except for when I try to play the challenges the app keeps crashing. You can restart it and it doesn’t lose your spot, but it will only crash again and again. Usually once it starts it will keep happening over and over and it takes a long time to be able to finish the game. What is weird is it lets you play more than half the game before it crashes the first time.
Great Community. This game is first and foremost a game that takes time to get good at. Once you start to understand the game it is still challenging online. You have to have a good strategy to be able to win and still sometimes that might not be enough. Coming from consoling gaming to this board gaming is refreshing. People are nice and they try to help you out it you ask questions. I recommend this to anyone who likes strategy/board games.
Poor 32-bit Optimization. This app is the best implementation of a board game I’ve ever played, and I’ve played a lot of them. Combine that with the fact that the board game is solidly designed (there’s a reason it’s rated so highly on BGG), and you have a must-play app. Unfortunately, the game was poorly optimized for 32-bit devices (iPad 4 and lower); it constantly crashes. So, if you have only a 32-bit device, you’ll likely be frustrated by it. Otherwise, dive in without reservation! If the devs manage to eliminate crashes on 32-bit devices, I’ll increase my rating to 5 stars. But until they do (multiple updates since release still haven’t helped), I can give it only 3 stars.
Well Done. Very polished! Succeeds in every way I had hoped. If you enjoy the boardgame, you will love this. Takes 4hours to play the boardgame and so I just don't get the opportunity. With this app I can get a complete game in 20 minutes. Great support. 2 updates already. Ability to move forward and backwards through turns to find the right combination of plays - really is improving my strategies. One of my all time favorite apps! Definately one of the best boardgame to app implementations you will find.
Endless fun!. Perfect adaptation of the board game. The tutorial is easy to follow for those that have never played before, and for those that have, the user interface is so well done that you don't even need the tutorial. My wife and I have already had over a dozen games in under a week. It is nice to not have to finish the game all in one sitting either. We can start a game, take a break and then finish later. Or even have multiple online games going at once. I strongly recommend this app. Can't wait for the expansion!
Patience. I really like this game. I also like the graphs at the end that show your production across all areas, turn by turn, compared to your rival. That is cool! I do want to give advice to new players. I almost gave up on this game because I made the mistake of trying to quickly play through my turns and paid no attention to my rival. Consequently, I lost every game. So I almost gave up, but then decided to try one more time, and slowed down. I thought through my choices on every turn, figured out that production and military strength early on is important, while still doing things to generate culture. I even wrote down what my rival was doing so I could analyze the AI’s card and resource production choices. For new players, I would tell you - take your time and think through your turns. It makes a difference (I won that game by 31 points).
Great game, small bugs. What a great game! I’ve enjoyed learning via the tutorial and playing it. I’ve only encountered a few bugs which seem to be of the sort that would be hard to find in testing. The first one was that the online play did not work through my wireless, but it works fine if I switch to LTE. I believed this must be specific to my router configuration. The second was a hard game crash during local play. I wasn’t able to continue the saved game as it would just load and crash at the same place. This didn’t happen in my other local games, so I’m guessing it’s a problem that only occurs in a specific state.

Almost flawless. Really enjoying this great implementation of the board game. I’ve played several games without any issue, however the most recent game crashed part way through. The state was saved and I can go through the menu to continue, I get a glimpse of the game screen and then it crashes again. This is consistently repeatable. I’ll update this review to 5 stars if the issue is resolved.
Incredible app. Perfect implementation. The single player challenges alone have kept me occupied for weeks.
AI on easy is still impossible. Accomplished strategy PC player. AI on easy is still way too hard. Haven’t won a single game in three hours. Getting a refund. Very frustrating.
What did u do in the most recent updates?!!. The game worked well until the most recent updates and now my game runs particularly slow when registering military card resolutions.. generally has become more buggy as well… :(
Fantastic implementation.. This has the best tutorial I've ever played through and I expect it will help me get the physical version to the table more often.
Great game. Love the app and the game, does take a bit to get your head around it though. Tutorial was helpful.
Solid game. Definitely worth getting this game especially if you are familiar with the actual board game. Only issue and reason for not giving 5 stars is the app won’t send any notification of any in game updates such as it being my turn or resolving certain situation in a game making it hard to tell when and when not to take your turn
Loving it!. Loving this digital version of the board game. So much so that I want to buy the expansion.
Flawless. It actually plays within the amount of time printed on the cardboard box!
A wonderful game. I’m always happy to end my days enjoying a game of Through the Ages.
Awesome. Love the feel, it’s a great adaptation of the board game for sure
Excellent!. A deep and complex board game made very accessible thanks to the great digital port by the studio. Clear UI, a tutorial that are extensive yet it was fun to go through due to the humor, and great visualisations of the cards that help the players to see a civilisation actually expanding with the flow of turns. Highly recommended.
Crashes. It’s crashing frequently in challenges
Filled with nuance. Hard to master. Very easy to get started but requires a few dozen games to really understand how to beat different types of opponent. One of the best board games of all time. Very clever. AI levels are excellent. Very well thought out
Perfect. The best digital implementation of a board game I’ve seen so far.
Amazing. Love the new app!
Great implementation of a heavy Euro. If you are a fan of this civ builder, no question this app is recommended. If you're more like me and never seen this over-the-board, it's still worth giving it a go. It is cheap compared to trying to source a set and a three; online (replete with grades) is available on top of the AI. Through the Ages is both a very heavy board game and a lighter version of Sid Meier's Civ series, perhaps meaning that the app is dissatisfactory for both those gaming archetypes? But the app handles the complexity as good as could be hoped, cutting a game to less than an hour and that in digestible chunks. It wouldn’t be the same as offering an OTB social dynamic, but then not everyone has the time!
Works well once you get the hang of things. Nice graphics/effects. Almost there
Excellent adaptation of the amazing physical game.. Great stuff
Great game, great app - BUT..... Delightful game, and beautifully implemented - it’s SO much easier playing this on app than as a board game, and the AIs are genuinely challenging. However, I’m deeply frustrated by the Challenges: every time I reach the endgame, the app crashes - closes down without warning - and when I re-open, my current game is gone. The latest update claims that it has fixed this problem; but the opposite is true for me - I didn’t notice this problem until the recent update. I hope they fix this - my addiction is being threatened!
Awesome game.... This game is brutally difficult, and that’s half the charm. It’s simple in many ways, but also incredibly complex. Each decision has a huge impact. If you like card games it’s worth learning!
Just want to get pass turn 1. Awww... Game drops out during first turn continuously on all settings. Hope update is on the making or l've blown $15 for sweet....
Great game, make sure you’ve got the time to play!. With an excellent tutorial to help you understand the game, Through the Ages is a great translation of complex board game to a great app. Just make sure you have enough time to play, because like Civilisation and those style games, you always want to play just one more turn...
Love it. Really well done. I have the board game and this works really well as an app. The tutorial is excellent and makes you laugh at times. Was able to play with a friend online. We each had 24 hours to make each turn. I found that it helped to clarify some of the rules for the board game. You can also play against an AI with different skill levels if you don't want to play with a real person online.
Always wanted to learn the boardgame; finally have!. Really enjoying after first few plays. Quality implementation, like their Galaxy Trucker one.
Exceptional quality, an easy 10 out of 10. Hands down the best digital implementation of a strategy board game. I cannot fault this game in any way; my group absolutely loves it. Hats off to the designer and the talented production team.
One of the best. This is definitely one of the best board game ports out there if I could rate it a 10 I would!!
Great version of the game. I mainly wanted to respond due to the 1-star review that someone left because they couldn’t win on easy... the board game isn’t easy either! I’d played a few rounds of the printed TTA previously and managed to only just beat the easiest AI on my first play of this version. Keep going, and adapt your strategies to the leaders you pick. This is a great adaptation of the game and for me is more fun to play without needing to score resources etc manually.
The best board game app ever. Everything is so perfectly polished. Other developers take note!! Since the last update, however, it no longer saves progress in a challenge - instead it restarts every time loaded making it hard to finish. The version history says this has been fixed but it’s still a problem
Legendary. A great conversion of a fantastic game.
Tutorial crash. Crashes about 20 minutes into the tutorial. At the same spot multiple times. When teaching about what the opponent does (Yellow guy). Disappointing for such a popular and well-rated app. EDIT: I have since played through full games against the AI and it has not crashed again so that’s great. Only crashes in tutorial. The game is a superb rendition of the tabletop version. It even includes an option to switch between “tabletop rules” and “digital rules” which are almost identical but give a couple of little tweaks. Very good app. 4 stars.
Amazing game. This game is just amazing. It’s basically like the creators have distilled the best parts of a Civilization game in to a card/ lard game. It’s so concise and gameplay is super thought provoking. Every turn I can spend many minutes contemplating my options. The UI is done superbly. Well done.
So very much worth the wait!. Practically flawless implementation of the board game. Plays fast, well, and is very stable. More than worth the wait! All the different types of multiplayer games (various levels of async and live) are a godsend too. Love Vlaada's humour chiming in on the tutorial as well. I'd give this 6 stars if I could!
Excellent port of the brilliant board game. Plays quickly and well, interface is user friendly and forgiving. Great implementation. (Edited 14 Oct 17: knocked two stars off because upgrade patch continually crashes the game during challenges part way through game in progress. Have screen shot of crash)
Online problems. Overall this is a great implementation of my favourite boardgame. My main issue is that the game seems to freeze on the online screen which renders it unplayable online. Downgraded from 2 to 1 star. $15AU is too much to pay to not be able to play the game online. I don't really care much for playing against the AI.
Excellent app. Great game to play. The challenges are a great addition to this game. Looking forward to when the new leaders and wonders will be added to, in an expansion. A must have for any TTA player. Grats on CGE for making an excellent app to implement an outstanding board game.
Great game. Great game and well implemented into digital form!!
Great game. This is a fun game easy to learn but difficult to master
Sound electronic adaptation of the board game. A solid effort.
Great game. Would be 5* but fit the occasional crashes.
One of the best board game app conversions. Brilliant game, and the App conversion actually improves upon it.

Great Adaptation of an Amazing Game. a full civilization game. No small feat! I got the real life board game because of this excellent app. In real life the game is really excellent, but demands lots of bookkeeping that can drag the game length a bit. In this all is done for you and each turn can just fly. Can and have recommended this app multiple times. Simply the best Civ game in your pocket there is.
Not the rules I remember. I play the original imbalanced version. Though I recognize this to be an improvement, I have yet to see if I will enjoy this. Lots of changes to cards I was not aware of made it so I had to click on everything to read what it does for sure. I think I will enjoy it soon, but I have to see if wars no longer exist. If not this game is not for me!
Crashes on Ipad multiple times when playing the scenarios. When trying to play the scenarios, the game just crashes mid-game and you lose all your progress. Some scenarios won't even start and will just crash. Will be requesting a refund.
Great Port of the Game! Batts Killer Though.. This is a well polished port of the board game. The local campaigns and the online matching is very well done. I am enjoying this game and loving it. Only issue is that it drains my batteries. Playing one game kills my phone’s battery by 30%, other board game ports like Terra and Agricola don’t even take 5%. Must be some way to optimize Through the Ages.
Why can other digital board games be like this. This game is so well run for a mobile game. It stomps over all the other digital-board game remakes. It runs great, on-time notifications, lobby making with chat, profiles, set timers, the ability to swap apps while waiting, it’s got it all. I hope this company considers bringing other board games to this same digital standard. You’d have my business, even 20$+, lets get it going, there is a big market here. Lords of water deep Arestia! Architects of the west kingdom. Tons of great games Im surprised this is not top #1 in board game.
It's perfect.. They fixed it, it's perfect.
Best civ-like card game!. Love the development of the game, I’ve played countless hours and it never gets old. Hope to see more expansion packs in the future!
Best board game app I’ve played. Very streamlined and awesome for learning the game. Well done.
It’s the small things. Simple and easy-to-use interface disguises a host of smart design decisions and QOL features. This is exactly what board game ports should aspire to be.
Such a great game. This game is amazing, definitely recommend.
Great game!. Much easier than playing the board game, as the game is quite complex and has lots of counters to keep track of. Really well designed iOS version of the game. The expansion is worth it too, especially if you’ve played the regular version for a while.
Fix the create game. It’s a great game and I want to give it 5 stars. But until u guys fix the new game creation I’m giving it a one star so it gets noticed. For other multi player games if u want to actually have a rematch with the same players there is a button for that. Not to watch the entire game again but play with the same folk again. You guys need to fix this. Come up with an easier way to play again with your friends.
Great game but crashes. Thanks for contacting me. The fix for it crashing seems to have worked. Great game!
One of the best. I love this game. It is endless fun, the challenges keep it fresh and entertaining.
Best of the best. Through the ages is, with or without the expansion, perhaps the best strategy game in existence. The board game is fabulous, but the iOS app has the advantage of keeping track of your statistics for you, and gives you the ability to experiment with your outcomes before committing. A difficult learning curve, but an absolute must for serious gamers.
Cuts music volume 50%. Great game. However, right now, when I open the app, it cuts my music volume by 50%. Please fix!
Excellent implementation !. Playing the best boardgame ever just got better. I can't stop playing. I might have too many games running at once...
Great game!. This game translates so well to an app. It's well worth the cost.
Merci !!!
Excellent game vs AI so far. Feels a bit like Sid Meier’s Civilizations but as a board game. Very fun. Having difficulty beating the AI in my first few games. I like this challenge.
Change or heart review... I had to change my review because I can't play on my cell data anymore because my provider is using Ipv6 instead of the old Ipv4... So yea I'm stock on waiting for Wi-Fi to play my turns all the time and it really pisses me off because there seems to be nothing done to fix this issue from the development team.
Brilliant. Over 30 hours of playing and I'm still getting better and learning - this game does not get old fast. I don't often believe in the hype for a mobile game, I've been disappointed in the past, but this game is a real exception and a real gem.
Good. It’s a good game. Buy it once play for a long time.
Impressive. I’ve never been so impressed with a mobile game before. Very few bugs, great multiplayer support, good updates, and a great UI for such a complex board game. What really impressed me? If you find a bug while playing a game, you can report it. That game is then locked/put on hold while the devs take a look. Once the bug is fixed you can resume your game. CGE has the best dev team when it comes to mobile board games, hands down. Galaxy Trucker is just as good.
Wonder...full. Top civilization game!
A must have for any board game enthusiast. Worth every penny. Great implementation, smooth interface, well thought out. I originally bought it to improve my understanding of the rules for the boardgame. Since then I can vouch for the fact that this game is almost more fun than playing the physical copy.
Fav. My favourite board game on iPad 0 complaints all fun n games!
Love It! Absolutely worth the price!. I love the Civilization series, but the games take forever and The Mid-Late game can really drag. THIS thing is a breath of fresh air! Through the Ages takes significantly less time while still offering a surprisingly deep strategic experience AND its late game is a highly dynamic sprint to the finish. If you’re like me and you just can’t convince yourself to dive into another 4X style game but still wanna feed that itch, this game is definitely for you.
Great Game. Complex challenge, always a different path and highly engaging. Great game!
Now I remember. I've played over 200 games and kept detailed records and now I remember why we stopped playing this game at the game club. It's way too militaristic. The AI (or one of them anyway if playing with 4 players), always goes military (I've seen a 54 military) and then will constantly attack the human player. This, despite the fact other AI players have significantly more victory points and have weaker military. This sometime will happen in the board game version, and because of this military skew that provides such game altering effects, we have stooped playing and I fear this is also the case for the digital version. I enjoy the mechanics of the game, but the military aspect is too powerful and makes playing the game unenjoyable at times
THE best digital adaptation of a board game, bar none.. Everything from the tutorial to the interface to the (minor)rules tweaks makes this brillant board game shine.
Never board of it.. I always enjoy the game, it never plays the same and has multiple ways to approach it. The expansions are enjoyable as well. Worth the time and effort.
Missing a Feature. The port to iOS is excellent, however it's missing the feature to pass and play with the possibility to add a bot for a third and/or fourth player. Almost every other boardgame port to iOS include this feature so it is disapointing that an app of this quality couldn't integrate it ...
My favourite game app. After having tried other board game apps, I have new appreciation for how extraordinarily well-made this is. I’ve played about fifty games online and offline and never had an issue with any aspect of the game. CGE is now on my auto-buy list.
Great game. Excellent adaptation of the board game. Only issue is when playing the challenge, it keep crashing when you enter Age 2 and older.
My best game ever on smartphone (equal with Xcom enemy within). I only ever bought 2 non f2p games. Those 2 in the title. I own Xcom on ps4 and also computer and im buying the board game tmr for through the ages. It's so much fun
Amazing game!. Extremely replayable. I play this game almost every day, and have yet to be bored!
Challenging and a Fun. Very challenging, yet very fun to play. Every game played if different due to the unpredictability of AIs as well as which cards will come next. Absolutely love this game!
Good implementation, great tutorial. The in-game tutorial is superb.
The Best. By far the best Board Game on iOS. By far. Extremely complicated to play irl, extremely easy on digital. A masterpiece.
Can’t get enough. I have been playing for more than a year now. I love it. Cannot wait for the extension to come out soon 👌. I play against my friend online multiplayer. No issue.
The Best Game Ever. I’ve played this game so many times and it still is so fun.
My favourite game!. I’ve been playing almost daily for over 2 years. Countless countless hours of entertainment. Well worth the price. I recommend it to all my board game friends. The game itself is great and the app UI is excellent.
How to app. Puts user experience first. Highly replayable and always enjoyable.
5 stars. The best strategy game ever!!!
The best. Sooo good.
Great Game. unique, challenging and a fun strategy game to play :-))
Awesome!. Favourite board game of all time! Can’t recommend it enough!
Truly excellent adaption of the board game. The tutorial was perfect.
Best strategy game on iOS. Great multiplayer and lots of single player content as well. Excellent game

Worth the money three times over. I’ve now bought this game on three platforms and have felt good about paying for it every time. Brilliant digital implementation of the game. I have experienced very few bugs over my many hours playing, and they have added many features the community has requested.
Fantastic implementation of a great board game. I’ve owned both physical versions of this game and it was always a bit too fussy for me. This version massively simplifies the bookkeeping and is very informative; it warns you when you’re about to do something silly and even reminds you when a card you placed in the event deck must be the next one to appear. The tutorial explains the game quickly and humorously. Highest recommendation!
The best game ever. This game is honestly the best game I have ever played (I own hundreds of board games). The depth of strategy and tactics is so satisfying. I have played this game hundreds of times and still find things that make me smile. The app is an amazing achievement, it is smooth and the AI on the highest difficulty is really challenging still. If you have ever wanted to master a game for the next decade, forget chess, plan through the ages.
Love this app. Everything about this app is amazing. The gameplay and aesthetics is top notch! Love this game! The only drawback is that I can't play online gameplay with others unless I am connected to wifi. Big drawback for people who don't have wifi accessibility due to life constraints. Other than that. Great app and AI PLUS CHALLENGES. Wish online play with others went through phone data too
Fabulous adaptation of one of the best board games of all time. This is simply a fantastic game and plays true to the board game. It is now 1am and I have to be up for work in a few hours but I just had to play "one more turn". Best part is, you can play your friends and it won't take forever to set up and take down.
Needs better tutorial. Excellent game, but the tutorial, though entertaining, was woefully lacking. The on line instructions are not much better. Just finding the order of actions takes drilling down through instruction titles that don't sound like they will get you there. The game play is awesome as are the graphics. An in game link to online board game rules would help immensely. Bjorn Reddy aka Coral_Queen (in game name)
Terrific implementation of a terrific game. Through the Ages is one of the best strategic card games out there, challenging and always forcing you to think on your feet. This is a terrific version of that game too, possibly the best board game app on iOS. There’s a lot of game here, and it’s not a casual design at all. But those who want to learn will find it rewarding, and this is a great way to learn.
Perfect Mobile Strategy Game. Great strategy game that doesn’t require gems or gold to increase rank or any of that. The game is easy to learn but hard to master and the game always picks up where you left off, making this the perfect game for fans of the strategy genre when they have some down time
Great adaptation. I love the board game, don't get me wrong, but I always end up finishing a game and thinking "I wish I had done xyz better" and having to wait for another game night. This version scratches that itch to try new strategies with the quick games where the automated housekeeping helps a ton.
I think I like it. I got sick of Game of War's freemium drug deals and went looking for a new deep strategy game. This one has great reviews so I spent half of what I spent monthly in GoW on it. I never knew the board version so it's all new to me. But twice through the tutorial and three times at the first challenge I beat the AI. I still don't know a lot of what's going on but I like that. It means I'll get a lot out of my $10. It's well programmed and designed.
Excellent implementation of a great game.. Lives up to the board game! The challenges make it a great single player experience too. If you’ve never played the board game I suggest playing humans of a similar experience level. I am a very experienced player of the board game and it took me two tries to beat the “easy” difficulty.
Perfect iOS port of the board game. I've wanted the physical version of this game for a long time but my circle isn't really into resource management. So when I saw this, it was a must have. I am glad I did as well. The added online variant is fair and speeds up online play, but there is still classic rules for solo. The AI is a good challenge. I still haven't beat a hard challenge (I have gotten close though). I highly recomend!
Needs work. The server needs some serious updates cause it is slow or sometimes you can’t even connect. The app itself is great, but these connection issues are really killing it big time. If they fix that, I’ll update to a better rating.
Awesome!!
Best iOS game seen in a long time. A refreshing break from apps with in game purchases of digital goods! The game play is refreshingly complex yet balanced, and the tutorial is hella funny, even joking at other tutorials that encourage use of the goods needed to finish that can be purchased in game. Two thumbs up, best value of a PvP game I've seen so far or the iPad.
Well Designed and Good AI. The game itself is an awesome game, but takes a super long time to learn and play. This app makes it MUCH easier to play quick games against actually competent AI. The challenges are fun and engaging, and the app is super well designed. It’s the first board game app I’ve had that has an undo button, which I feel like should be a requirement for all board game apps.
Steep learning curve, my favorite game. The tutorial is really good and it makes learning this complex game much easier. My first few playthoughs weren’t great, but I learned and it is so much fun now. To make things easier for you: 1. Don’t sweat if you don’t have a leader. If one is convenient then great. Don’t pay a lot for one or take one that doesn’t give you what you need. It is good that they disappear because what you need can change. 2. Scale up iron first. Then grain, then science. 3. Don’t worry about getting the most advance buildings. If you have high population, you will do just as well with the lower tech buildings for longer. I usually skip level one and do great with level 2 buildings for the whole game.
Excellent. I like this even better than the board game because it saves a lot of time with set up. Crashes sometimes, but doesn't ruin everything you can pick up where you left off. Also I think there is a bug with Julius Caesar where if you don't use his ability right away it becomes disabled. Nevertheless I love this game.
Good implementation ruined by connectivity issues. I enjoyed this game for months but the latest update is highly unstable - connection takes several minutes and you still get thrown off if and when you finally reach the server. I don’t know what the update ‘fixed’ but it has rendered the game nearly unplayable.
Superb!!. If you like strategy games or board games this one is superb. My first exposure to this board game was this digital version. The tutorial is great, the interface is awesome and winning is very rewarding. It took me a few games to get comfortable with everything but the experience is worth the effort. I just want to thank the developers on such a wonderful product. Worth every single dollar.
Great game unless you have T-Mobile. This is an excellent game that really sets the bar for board game ports. Clean and clear UI, good AI, excellent multiplayer. So why only one star? This game will NOT work on T-Mobile’s network. From what I’ve read, it doesn’t properly support IPv6, and T-Mobile no longer supports IPv4 on iOS. As a result, I can only play multiplayer on Wi-Fi, and have lost many games due to timeout as a result. It’s a real shame that such a great game fails on a core feature: Internet connectivity. CGE has known about this bug since last year and has been promising a fix, but nothing so far.
Best iOS Board game app ever. I like the board game Through the Ages but it can very long. This app is tremendous. It has an easy to us UI and I can play a game in under 30 minutes. I absolutely love it And it is addicting. The AI is incredibly good. I struggle with the hard AI players. I cannot say enough good things about this game. If you don’t own it you should.
Great game. Love the challenge mode, however have to leave a 1 star due to it all comes down to luck on drawing war cards and cars distribution. You play ~20 minutes and then game gives you 0 war cards. Can’t be sure but stage 2 wonders pop almost always after your turn and you only get them if all AI passed it. If AI can take from you it will even if you aren’t the weakest player. Somewhat annoying too… all of this makes this game kind of 99% based on luck
Really Solid Digital Version of a Really Solid Board Game. I’ve been playing this with my husband and brothers for years now. The app is fantastic. I think the tutorial is the best game tutorial I’ve ever seen. Very helpful. On top of being a really fun and nuanced board game, the app is just really well made. Fantastic combo.
Challenging faithful board game adaptation. For those of you who are wondering, this is exactly like the board game. For those of you who have never heard of this game, it is a challenging game which can get easier with a well thought out plan. Though the game will go through the same deck of cards, depending on the order and with some luck, the game will turn out somewhat differently than the last.
Amazing App!!. They have done an AMAZING job with creating this application. There is only one bug that I have noticed, the activity log will sometimes not scroll. Otherwise, the app is flawless. I have numerous over board game apps, and this one is by far the most well executed. Kudos to the team for making it.
Amazing and worth the wait. As a player of the board game, it was exactly what I hoped! It simplifies all of the record keeping, explains the cards and actions graphically and has an action by action rollback where appropriate. The interface is extremely easy to use but it also has an excellent tutorial. Loving the challenges and as I improve will probably love the online play also.
Awesome board game implementation. So, I don’t own the board game and have never played it before (and I own about 800 board games). I bought this two weeks ago, I’ve spent literally about 100 hours playing it and have finally just now have beaten it on the hardest level against 3 AI opponents. This is by far the hardest game I’ve ever played. I rate it ten stars if I could. Definitely worth the money. I’d buy it all over again!!
Unplayable on iPhone X. I so desperately want to play this game, but the screen size and dimensions of the iPhone X make it impossible. First, text on the right and bottom of the screen is obscured. But more egregiously, you cannot build wonders because their location is obscured by the card row. Please please fix this screen layout issue soon!!!!!
Great implementation of a great board game. This game is great... especially if you've played the board game and don't get to play it as much as you'd like due to the length, complexity, whatever. The app adds a great tutorial, integrated card mechanisms (for instance: tells you what playing a card will due to reducing the cost of a building/upgrading). It evens warns you before you face corruption, accidentally pass with actions still available, etc. all and all, a great game!
Crashes. Purchased the game recently and have played a lot and enjoyed it. Games are time-consuming however and multiple unrecoverable crashes in challenge mode games is very disappointing. Update: crash fixed! This is one of the best digital adaptations of a physical game I've played (and is frankly a better way to play the game). Have played for far too many hours. :)
Great adaptation, loses nothing in translation. I love the board game, but it takes forever to play. It is also very prone to mistakes such as forgetting to use a Wonder or Leader power, forgetting to play a card, playing a card when you can't, etc. This app handles all of that junk for you, making everything much faster and easier to handle without removing any of the complexity of the real board game. It's also surprisingly good on a phone screen - small, but well-designed and easy to find the information you need. I expect I'll be playing a lot of this with my family and friends. Also the tutorial is hilarious.
Amazing Game, where’s iPhone X support?. Can’t believe the engine building in this game. So solid. Long games but worth play time. Can you please fill out my iPhone X screen? Such a disappointment. Will be five stars immediately once this is rectified. Bumping it to 5 stars on the promise of iPhone X support. Thanks for a wonderful implementation of an excellent game.
Great game!!. This was already a great game in tabletop format, but the only two downsides are solved with the digital version: 1: you can play a single game in a fraction of the time it takes to do the board game. 2: the tutorial is amazing and entertaining. I spent a weekend reading the rule book when I started playing. Now you can learn the basics in 20 minutes!
Best boardgame adapted to an app. Full stop!. Wow! A superior game in every way. Takes a very deep, rich and complex boardgame and takes away so many fiddly elements. The tutorial is engaging, helpful and funny. One of my favorite board games brought to an iOS platform is such a treat, especially when the translation is this amazing. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
Lots of freezing recently!. App has always been amazing but just recently it starting freezing on me frequently. Often when I was ending my turn, it would freeze and I’d be forced to hard reset and re-do my turn. This never happened to me over months of owning the app. I’m wondering if the recent update for “bug fixes” actually caused more problems than they fixed? This was a perfect app before but it is very irritating to play right now. It freezes during pretty much every turn I take.
Kevin. Played only once over the board and knew there was something good there but played too poorly to poorly to really grasp how good this game is. The app seriously makes it easier to learn the animation of the civilization you build is cute and makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Phenominal game!
Great game but resource heavy. I’ve enjoyed this game tremendously while sidelined after surgery. After many, many games the “novice” opponents are still challenging. I’m giving it 4/5 stars because it really has trouble on my iPad Air 1. I needed to turn off sounds and animations for AI players and it’s best to avoid four-player games. In the final few rounds the game stutters badly until eventually it will crash. Repeatedly. Sticking to three total players (two AI) is easy to do, but some of the challenge matches require four.
Small bug. Playing against the ai sometimes right at the End of your turn (after you tap end turn but before it goes to the next player) if you tap your government the card will pop up and stay on screen until the 2 players after you goes ex. If I tap my government then it will stay up while red goes but disappears when blue goes but other than that it’s a great game
Must Have. If you play/have the board game this is an absolute must buy. The interface is as elegant as any I’ve seen. It is true to the tabletop game. And probably best of all, the AI is challenging but fair. Admittedly I already know the game, but I also thought the tutorial was complete and excellent as well. This should be the standard for any board game going digital.
Easy AI is indeed easy.... The AI appears to be somewhat weak, I won my first game by miles. Both AIs went heavily in discontent workers and needed to destroy their buildings and units. Otherwise good app, fast animation, fast turns. You need to know the game fairly well to play it. Update : I played the above game against the easiest AIs (default), I just noticed today that you can change the difficulty level. I will try again with more difficult AI. The app is awesome and I am happy to have it.
Awesome. Awesome board game, and this implementation of it is brilliant and beautiful. I love it, and play it everyday online and have already hooked three other friends on it. My only complaint would be that they need to stabilize their network more. Disconnects are far too common, but I know they are aware of the issue and are working on it.
Great port of a very complex board game. This is a great port of Through the Ages. The tutorial was great to play through with that Vlaada touch. That was my big worry going into it that this very complex game would have a dry, unbearable tutorial, but everything is taught piece by piece with enough 'do it yourself' to commit it to memory. Once you know how to the play the game is a great. So much strategy and choices to make!
Fantastic game and adaptation. I own and play hundreds of boards games and this one is still my absolute favorite. I own a physical copy but honestly it plays so much better with the app. Very streamlined without the side effect of confusing rules and effects. A definite must buy! Also get the expansion as it makes the game infinitely better.
Worth it for TtA Fans!. Almost better than the actual game which is slow and arduous. Love the art, quality, challenges and features! Might even recommend it over the actual board game if you have a tablet that you can pass to or online play with friends.
Tough but worth it. This is a hard game, and the app really doesn’t hold your hand in teaching it. Regardless this game is the most insanely rewarding balancing act—it’s a joy to find a synergy and run with it. I’ve only been able to bust the actual boardgame out TWICE-since I bought a year ago and I’ve gotten to play a few games with this app already. DEVS PLEASE DO MAGE KNIGHT 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Worth The Work. I love tabletop board games. I bought the board game earlier this year and have struggled to learn all of the rules. I downloaded this app and have loved it. It has an incredible tutorial. The game itself works wonderfully. It took me 15 games until I won my first challenge, but it takes time to learn the game mechanics and how to gain an edge on competitors. The game is so great with a lot of strategic layers.
Loved this game until it kept crashing this week. I have been playing and raving about this game to family and friends for a year, thus past week it kept crashing on my iPad even if I have the latest updates. Contacted customer support through the app and reached out to their Facebook but received no answer. Please help me play again!
