Catan FAQ:

Question: An expansion seems gone after an update or reinstallation of Catan or after restoring the device?
Answer: Don’t worry! Your initial purchase is already saved in your iTunes account. You can restore your InApp purchases by selecting the restore-option in the Catan IAP menu.

Question: I lost my campaign progress after reinstalling, updating or restoring my device. Is there any way to restore it?
Answer: When saved games can’t be automatically restored, we’ve integrated a cheat code: In the campaign mode go to select player and enter „CatanWarp*“ (* = 1–15) as your player name and confirm. Exit the game via the home button and restart it. The campaign can now be continued from the specified level number (1–15). Levels up to the specified number will be unlocked in the custom game mode as well.

Question: Are dice rolls really random?
Answer: Of course! All dice rolls are 100% random and not modified in any way. We’re avid Catan players ourselves. We’ve played the iOS version hundreds of times while developing the program. There have been times when we won and lost a few games in a row because of the dice - just like when playing the board game!

Still fun, but the dice randomness could use some work. I have had to develop a whole new strategy to pivot from real life strategy. The dice and subsequently the robber will almost certainly fall out of your favor after you earn a single additional victory point. The AI is hyper fueled to gain development cards and the robber is constantly working against you. If you try to acquire a dev card, it is almost never a knight card. ANYTIME you have over 7 resources someone rolls a 7. EVERYTIME. There have been games where the robber has been thrown 4-5 times in a row and then knight card are tossed around. I had 6 resources go down to zero after the robber was tossed back and forth on my hexes in tandem by AI. This would very rarely happen in real life. Unless I stole someone’s dog and the table responded John Wick style to my aggression. My strategy has been basically to clear my hand every turn. AI also never trades, ever. Have to rely soupy on ports. If you can get over the fact this doesn’t play life real life, then it does get fun. You still have that same sense of accomplishment when you see “Lord of Catan” populate.

I don’t have to pretend anymore.. All the “kids” (12 year olds through 32 year olds) would sit around at family gatherings and play Catan. Us old folks (45 to 60) would pretend to know what was going on with the game. This app has made learning the game easier and it’s a lot of fun. I’ve always enjoyed turn based games that combine strategy, expansion, resource management , and cooperative elements, so Catan is a winner for me. I’d give the game a better score, but the online aspects of the game don’t seem to work.. I’m not a lost Boomer who’s unable to navigate the internet either. I’m the excel, db, computer question go to person at the place where I work. I can reset the PW 100 times, but it still says it’s wrong.. so I’ll just play against the AI for now and when I’m ready, I’ll try another App for online play. We’ll worth $5 too.. I spend more on a double mocha frappewappechinolatte drink down at Starbigsby donuts.. (I think that covers it all)

Rigged!!. While I do love the Catan game I’m constantly frustrated at the way the AI on this game turns on you once you are in the lead. I’ve played it hundreds of times so know the tendencies. Once I get Longest Road, out come the “7” rolls and Knight cards against me. And where are the AI players getting all the cards? They’re no way getting the rolls to get the resources for the Development cards they acquire. I also watch sometimes amazed at how a player can build 4 roads and a village with only 8 resources. I also watch their trades and resource spending. Their numbers don’t match up to what they’re spending. I also know if I refuse a trade before my turn I’ll get a seven if I have 8 or more resources. Never seems to happen to the other players who seem to stack up 12-16 without ever getting robbed. And the “luck” of the rolls. I once played a game where there were SIX rolls of 7 in a row. Other times it’s other numbers but the distribution curve is anything but truly random. What this app needs is a true randomizer for the die rolls.

Disappointed in the quality. My family likes to play games but we prefer to lounge on the couch instead of sitting at the table. So we all got the Catan app so we could play. We play other games like this all the time. However, this app is buggy. If I close the app and come back there is a great chance it will kick me out of the game. It takes forever to start a game even when all players keep clicking the green check mark. It also doesn’t seem to be consistent in swapping cards with other players. Sometimes it shows up even if I don’t have what the other player is asking for and it’s very confusing to the person requesting the swap if it was accepted or not. Really need to clean up the interface in some areas to make it easily understood. We got so frustrated today that we finally gave up playing. If it was a free app that would be less frustrating but we paid $15 for everyone to have it. Back to Ticket To Ride for now.

Love it. This is a very faithful rendition of the board game, which I love. Excellent job. As for the dice, which many of the reviews talk about, they do not appear skewed. The game developers went so far as to allow you to see the roll history, which I have reviewed several times. They appear exactly as you would expect, but are not perfect matches because there are only so many rolls in a single game. The developers even allow you to skew the distribution if you like, making the middle numbers more likely. As for beating the AI, I am just slightly better than 25%, which is how I would like it given I want to get better. There are many times when the AIs all gang up on me, but that makes sense when I have 4 points in the first two rolls. Totally worth the price in my opinion.

Something needs to change or don’t bother getting it. The queue times for online need to change. They constantly cycle through the same people god forbid its someone who you just played with and quit either mid game or at the very end because they’d rather run away than see someone else win. There should be like a 30 minute temporary ban for ditching before the game ends too many times in a row. 5 out of 6 games I have played today have ended due to someone quitting; thats the only reason anyone can play 6 games to begin with and its irritating. Also rolling a 7 is 100% not random and neither are the rolls after. You could go through the whole game without your piece being rolled once but as soon as someone uses a knight or rolls a 7 that number will be rolled more often than not until the robber is removed and then once again returns to never being rolled. I kept trying to give this version a chance but can’t continue playing this until they fix something.

Very disappointed in this game. Wow, where to begin, the free version is better, plain and simple, not with 4.99 by any stretch of the imagination, super 2D graphics with barely the element of a 3-D interaction I was very disappointed to say the least for a 30 year old game you think they would give a little bit more love to the development now had they charged a dollar for the game like a $.99 game maybe I could see that before 99 it’s just completely out of the question I was kind of gypped on the original game that I downloaded for free got one game and then they wanted to charge me $1.99 to play the game I was just honest I said well I might as well get the other game that I can play endlessly well turns out this game is even worse than that game when it comes to graphics and how to play and all that stuff now the game is miles ahead and that one’s not even that good so Catan you really need to put this game on sale and the other game you need to give other people a chance to play it not just one every 24 hours y’all are ripping people off

Frustrating AI and unrealistic dice. I’d pass on thus. So, the odds of dice mean nothing and if you’re doing well the dice will equalize and knights/7’s will destroy you. Leaving this review after being robbed 6 times in one round and, in islands, having the first 4 islands discovered take 4 of my 6 resource numbers (including 8 and 6) moved to islands as the islands started to get discovered. It’s just a waste of time when 6 or 8 is not rolled dependent of which one you’re on (the little dice tracker helps yo notice its true and on in your head). Another time 10 wasn’t rolled the whole game (standard dice setting) and wouldn’t you knows it, I would get 4 resources of brick and had a brick port on ten. And as other reviewers have said you’ll be up multiple victory points and then there will be three 11’s rolled someone will build 4 roads and 2 settlements and turn one into a city to win with 4 victory points. It’s annoying. Deleting the app now. Annoying because other than the waste of time the rigged gameplay makes it, it’s well done and just like playing.

Bad AI, multiplayer glitches. The game is good at it's core, but playing against the AI is mostly unusable if you are looking to improve at Catan. The game dice fixes to allow the AI to "catch up" when behind in points. This means skill has very little to do with whether you win or lose in single player. The AI should instead be worked on to better mimic a strong human player and the dice rolls should be COMPLETELY RANDOM. In multiplayer, there are numerous glitches as well. For example, when buying dev cards, if connection lag forces the game to take time to register this buy, and you click on buy dev card again while the first one is still in process, it will give you two cards even if you do not have enough resources for them! This is game breaking and gets abused quite often online. It even allows players to do this as long as the lag lasts, sometimes buying 5-6 dev cards in one turn with only enough resources for 1! Finally, there is the problem of players constantly leaving games online. For this issue, I suggest matching players based on how often they leave games, so that players who do not leave games often are matched with similar players, and not forced to play against the frustrating AI when others leave. For the price I paid for this game, I did not expect these many issues, and therefore I give the game 2 stars.

Faithful Recreation for Mobile. There’s not much to say, if you like the game, you’ll likely enjoy the app as it is faithful to the original game. I’ve played 100’s of games and can tell you the dice roll randomly (though you will still lose some games due to them not always following the bell curve), and there’s nothing to back up the game being rigged besides some users feeling cheated that a game had an unusual number of 12’s or 3’s. You can even check the stats at the end of the game to see what numbers were rolled most often. It’s main fault comes with the AI. The computer players have limited intelligence and will allow you to always fish for a better trade deal or build towards a spot you’ll obviously head them off on. This makes it easier to win, but they are still competitive enough to win if the dice don’t fall your way. Lastly, the game will occasionally start to crash by not displaying some pop-ups. This is easily solved by backing out of the game and re-entering, but that should ideally Not be needed. Only bug I’ve found.

Game is always stacked against you, more frustrating than fun. Definitely looks like Catan, definitely does not play like Catan. Any strategy you try to play should get thrown right out the window. Sure, the first few rounds may be “random” but the rest of the game plays as if it’s trying to make sure you lose, no matter what. Have a settlement you need to upgrade? Don’t worry, you’ll never roll what you need. Finally get that brick, on a 6 of all numbers? It sure seemed like it took 10 full rounds to roll but no, you didn’t, the computer will roll a seven and steal THAT 1 BRICK from you. This doesn’t just happen once, it happens every. Single. Time. I thought I was crazy when I bought this a few years ago and it seemed like it was always stacking against me but after reading all the reviews it’s good to know I’m not the only one who feels this game is rigged. If you want to be annoyed that the computer players have massive favor on their side and you’re constantly digging out of holes, buy this game!

Skeptical from reviews but own experience differs. Reading the reviews I was a bit worried it wouldn't be what I'd like...I.e. Dice rigged or teaming up, etc. I can say, from my experience, that the dice can screw you or it can screw the AI just as well. It's just...random...like it's supposed to be. Only thing that's unusual is that AI will sometimes play knight cards to steal/or just block you without a strategy to it past that...but I have friends who do the same. You can lose games like this, of course, but that's catan! Great for playing with buddies, we actually opt out of setting up the whole board game now for the convenience of the app. For those that did wish this was a "play on your own time app," it isn't that, so be aware (you can't be playing and leave for hours). Awesome app - thank you to the creators!

Decent but AI is blatantly aimed against you. I loved the board game and truly excited and have enjoyed the creation of this app; however, the Artificial Intelligence is clearly calculated against you and to an unrealistic degree. I know the roll of the die are left up to “chance,” but your number gets rolled repeatedly once the robber has been placed on that number. Once you are ahead and nearing victory, you will get hit with an onslaught of knight cards, robber rolls, monopoly cards and 12+ rolls with not a single one of your numbers coming up in order to keep you at bay. You could offer the same trade to an AI player that they just offered you and they reject it, to only re-offer it on their subsequent turn. I don’t want a game where human intellect can easily outthink a simple cyclical algorithm from the Computer, and I genuinely appreciate the cunningness of the AI thwarting you in strategic ways. But, I have often just quit a game when it becomes a relentless calculated attack. I wish the creators could make the adjustment to receive the 5 stars this app otherwise warrants.

Fun Game, Unfair A.I.. Great base game, but the programmers have not taken the time to implement proper A.I. Instead of the computer using strategy and cunning, it will manipulate the outcome so the robber is constantly thrown against you, rolls on your settlements are then thrown while robber occupied. As well, even when using the Stack dice roll option, if the computer can’t outthink you, it will devolve into ignoring the Stack rule and give your numbers less roll chance (I have screenshots proving this). Lastly, and the most obvious and annoying cheap tactic is that when playing against three A.I. opponents, one of them always seems to relegated itself as the sacrificial lamb in order to trade whatever the other two A.I. players need at any given time. Again, the base game is great, the different modes are super fun, but the unfair A.I. curbs the excitement. An important note- I’m not saying this out of frustration because I’m losing, I probably win 65%+ of the time, but I want to win against an A.I. with more fine-tuned programming. Lastly, I hope the devs aren’t saving all their programming efforts for the always online, less awesome version of Catan. PLEASE just perfect this one! Thank you!!

"Catch-Up Mode" is Ridiculous. AIs get an unfair advantage when the player takes any sort of lead. And they maintain this advantage even after they've caught up. They even trade amongst each other to take down the player in ways no human would because it hurts their own chances. For instance, the blue AI had caught up to me in victory points in one game and was 3 away from winning. Red traded with Blue three times in one turn even though Red was losing by at least 6 points. Yellow's turn came and they also traded with Blue, allowing Blue to win. Why on Earth would that happen? It makes no sense and is very frustrating to watch the AI collaborate against you in ways no human player would ever do. Especially when this turns a calculated win into an incredibly improbable (bordering on mathematically impossible) loss. As other players have noted, this behavior extends to the robber and even seems to affect dice rolls. This is at the very least a poor decision and in my eyes is even unethical (although very minor on the ethics scale, admittedly). Please fix this, I love Catan but this game barely counts as Catan.

Fix the crashes. I’ve been playing this game for years, and I agree with what many other reviewers have indicated about the AI teaming up and the unfair rolling of the dice. Also, the AI is not trading when they have the resource and they actually need the resource you’re trading because they don’t have it but make the same trade when it’s their turn. And the multiple knight cards being played beyond the number in the deck. And roads sometimes appearing where they shouldn’t and they don’t make sense. I’ve actually screenshot of where they build a road into the water. No kidding, but my biggest issue right now is my game crashes since my device iOS was updated to 16.2 so while you’re fixing the crash, please fix some of these unfair tactics of these AI players. Thank you very much I love Catan.

The AI Cheats; Still Great. The AI absolutely cheats on the more difficult mode. I have no doubt of this. Yet, this game is still great. I never lose when I play in real life, because I’ve played against the cheating AI and learned how to win regardless. The only other quibble I might have is that the computer won’t ever trade multiple of the same resource. Ever, that I’ve seen. It will occasionally trade you, say, one wheat, one brick, and one stone, in exchange for one sheep, but it will never trade, for example, two or three wheat for one stone. Meanwhile, you can see if the computer will trade for something, then just keep adding the other resources from the AI. Usually, you can get extra resources that way, whereas in real life, it never works that way. People in real life are far more likely to walk away from trades in real life if you try to renegotiate. The computer will always just give you more, assuming it has more. That is sort of the opposite of cheating, and it’s way too easy and tempting to avoid. That could be randomized or fixed somehow, I’m sure, based on how people play in real life. Maybe make different characters play that differently. Again, there are annoying aspects of the AI, but it’s a great game, and I am shockingly good in real life now because of it.

My experience... So, I love Catan, playing the board game with friends/family. I’ve been playing for several years and have had the app for a couple years now. It’s fun to play the original map and to try the other ones (seafarers, etc). My only complaint is that the AI WILL NEVER/RARELY trade with you. Playing with humans there is a lot more trading going on. Playing with AI I can almost guarantee that I will never get anything from them. So I often do a 4:1 trade or strategize to get a port. But, the AI players constantly trade and always ask a million ways and times for that ore that you just drew of course. I often toggle the “no more trading with anyone til my turn” button. I have even played around with giving an opponent a resource that I may need or want to see if they reciprocate the favor later (you know, like a human might do). But no. No absolutely not. All in all it’s a fun app/game and I do enjoy playing as often as I want.

Meh.... While many people will play most of their games online with random opponents, I prefer to not have to constantly wait for people to play their turn. That means I've played a significant number of games against the AI. I really tried to give this app a chance, and I may come back to it for the occasional game if I feel like I can handle the frustration--but the AI is just so infuriating to play against! The AI is not nuanced or well-developed, which means that it relies on screwing with the dice rolls to give the AI players an advantage. A game that is essentially about probability management is broken when you lose that very capacity. It takes all the fun out of the game. In fact, I'm only rating this app x3 stars because I can see how I might enjoy online games against random strangers if I was another person... This app is really disappointing to me.

Pros and cons. This is my go-to game for passing time, so obviously I like it! I like that you can set the speed to turbo when playing the AI (the only way I play) so you can play a fast game, and that the game is challenging when you have a variable board set up. That said, there are some annoying parts too - every single thing (rolling dice, trades, actions, etc) covers the board so you don't get to see it except on your turn. Like when An opportunity to trade comes up, but you can't look at the board to see what you need most. And it takes more steps than it should to build things, especially if you are - for example - building multiple roads in one turn. Looking at other reviews, many complain that the game favors the AI, I feel that way sometimes, but I've won enough times that I'm not convinced. Overall, this is the only way I usually get to play Catan, as the rest of the family is not as hooked as I am, so I'm happy!

Great adaptation. Easy interface, great system. My only problem has been that other players online may take way too much time on their turn and the option to boot them from the game only appears once, and will only succeed with a vote by the other players. The vote will almost always fail, so you'll consequently have to put up with that player taking 2-6 minutes for their turn for the rest of the game, which is frustrating. There should be an option to pressure the player into playing quicker, or for the vote to be called for again. Alternatively, there could be a 1-3 minute timer for all players to take their turn, and if someone exceeds this time limit 3x in a row, they are booted from the game and replaced with an AI. Still an awesome game though! I love that I can play offline and online.

Needs improvement. The game is beautifully designed and looks exactly like the board game. But I really wish the computer played fair. At some point during every game I am ahead and then all of a sudden a certain number is rolled multiple times in a row to benefit the computer players. Or 7’s are rolled multiple times and the computer just keeps taking turns placing the robber on me. There have even been several times where it’s obvious the computer is doing everything to benefit one player just to beat me. I understand it’s strategy and it’s impossible to win all the time, but it’s really frustrating when I just keep having to pass the dice without making any moves for SEVEN turns, and then just have one of the computer players catch up to my six point lead and win with 3 victory point cards. I enjoy playing but for an app that ISN'T FREE... it needs to be more user oriented.

Why I Uninstalled This App. After countless rounds, I finally uninstalled this app for good. The AI is clearly rigged against you. As soon as you build one settlement, all 7’s start piling onto your spaces, even if the computer is ahead. All knight cards played will peg the robber onto you, on your best money-making spots. The only way to win is to box the computer in so they can’t expand, but it literally takes twice the amount of resources to win (or do anything, really), because half your resources get stolen and redistributed back at the computer. Year of plenty always is played so that it steals your resources the most. No point in buying knights, you won’t compete against the amount of knights and 7’s rolled by the computer. Even if you have the most cities and spaces, you’re playing poor the entire game. Getting the Longest Road is a MUST. There are so many things that make this game unwinnable that it’s absurdly frustrating, such that I want to throw my $900 iPhone 11 at the wall, every time. And that’s why I uninstalled this app, because I’d probably do it one day and be down $900 because of this stupid app.

Great UI, Hilariously Flawed AI. I have had this App for years. And have played a lot. I love Catan and the app is pretty good, but as seen in other reviews there is both silly and frustrating AI behavior. They definitely team up on you when you’re about to win, but not each other. The probability of 7’s being rolled when you’re about to win is comically probable. The AI definitely play knight cards when they don’t even have development cards. The trading with AI is tilted toward the human player—basically because you can always keep asking them over and over what they would give to maximize your gain, which no human would put up with. The AI will sometimes build roads in directions that have no value whatsoever. And while I believe that the dice roll may match the bell curve, there is definitely a high probability of your numbers being rolled while it’s blocked by the robber. And also a higher likelihood than normal that all your numbers will get rolled in sequence followed by a seven. I think the AI’s weren’t smart enough initially to challenge human players, so they added all of these strange handicaps.

Near Flawless. The game is amazing and true to the classic. The ease at which it plays and the pieces move is incredible. Visually, it’s great and I also love all the settings that you can change to make the game you’re own. I also think the prices are in line and had no problem forking over the money to play my favorite board game of all time. Now the reason for the star deduction. Fix the NBA Jam style AI. It’s almost laughable sometimes. It’s to the point where I can guess dice rolls. Sure, when you’re in the lead, the others will be gunning for you, so I understand, to a point, the knight jumping from your space, to your space, to your space, etc. etc. etc. (the AI always seems to have an endless supply of knight cards when you’re ahead). However, you better not end a turn with over 7 cards when in the lead, because you’ll definitely be missing some cards before your next.

Holy Shizz! I beat the AI. I was just introduced to the board game this past week whilst on vacation, and as soon as we played our first game -- I was hooked! Decided to give the mobile game a go because I know this will be the only chance I get to get my fix of Settlers in. Read the reviews which said that the AI becomes basically impossible to beat which meant I definitely had to try it. But first, I tried the online experience -- definitely something left to be desired there. Wait time to find a lobby was long, and once I was able to join a game the group suffered connection issues and players exiting and entering the game. So yeah, first online Settlers attempt...not so great. But why wait around for some noobs to POSSIBLY play their turn, when you can get instant gratification from playing AI!? So, I scroll through the custom game set-up mode, and before you know it, I'm laying down the foundation of becoming The Lord of Catan! Lemme tell you, the game held true to the reviews I read. The computer seems to pull off these ridiculous come from behind wins; rolling an absurd amount of 7s, and rallying together to play back to back to back knight cards against you! I was determined though. Every loss was motivation to try a different approach, and what do you know....6 hours later, I finally friggin beat the AI. Yessir. I can finally go to bed!

AI will make you want to scream. Overall the interface is good, but I absolutely cannot stand the AI. The dice rolls are absurd - the AI players somehow manage to roll every seven and produce countless knights; I have literally gone rounds where I lost 5 or 6 cards in a row because every player just kept stealing from me. Ridiculous. My numbers are rarely rolled, regardless of how good the number is (say 6 or 8). The other players constantly gang up on me, even when I'm losing! They also refuse to trade with me when I'm winning, which would make sense, except for the fact that they trade with each other even if one of them is winning. In general they're not so great at trading, but that's more of a side note. Overall this app is great, as it allows me to indulge my Catan addiction, but sometimes it's so frustrating I have to exit and come back later. Developers, please fix the AI!

Game always lets computers win.. I’m leaving 1 star until they fix the absolute abomination of what they call a campaign. The dice rolls are absurdly unfair. The game CLEARLY favors the computers. I’ll be in a game where the goal is 12 victory points. I’ll have 10 points while the computers have 5-7. Within 10 turns, 5 of the dice rolls will be a 7 and at least 5 of those turns a knight will be played and placed on one of my tiles. The tile they place it on will be a 6, for example, and the entire time the knight is on my 6, the number 6 will continuously be rolled but as soon as the knight is removed, the number 6 is now never rolled making it impossible for me to obtain the 1 resource I need to win the game. Also, the computers are constantly trading each other allowing one another to obtain the resources they need to win the game. Within those 10 turns, a computer will have gone from 7vp to 12vp and won 100% unfairly. It’s stupid and impossible to win the game. The number 2 and 12 are also rolled an impossible number of times. Hey. Fix it.

Full of bugs that have never been fixed. This app has had bugs that have never been fixed in years. This is extremely frustrating for such an expensive app. The game constantly crashes (for one person the game app just closes on their device and everyone has to wait for them to rejoin and the latest turn has to be replayed, which in many cases requires honesty because before the crash someone may have got an informational advantage like seeing someone else’s hand using the “Spy”). Another bug that has been around for years: If a “computer” player reaches an island and builds on a hex with gold, 80% of the time, the next time that number (with the gold) gets rolled, the computer player will not “choose” a resource (from the gold) and the game just gets stuck with nobody being able to do anything; it basically means the game ends as all players are stuck waiting for something that never happens. Other frustrating bugs happen as well, these two are just the two most prominent.

Fix your AI. It’s total garbage. And find a way to penalize players for quitting online games. I just had two players drop out because I had a one point lead and they’re bad sports, only to have the AI replacements LITERALLY play knight cards AND roll 7’s FOUR TURNS IN A ROW. and only rob me, of course. In a matter four or five turns an AI player managed to pick up Longest Road, Largest Army, AND two Victory Point cards for the win, while I was unable to build a single road or buy a single development card. This is total bollocks and extremely frustrating. I play this game a lot and that’s pretty much how every game goes. It’s no fun, even when it sometimes seems to be skewed in my favor. What’s the point of playing a game where there’s no challenge, just a question of “are the dice all gonna go my way this time or not?” This is the most expensive app I’ve ever purchased and definitely the one I hate the most. I love the board game and this has potential to be a decent substitute. What a lazy and sorry excuse for competition they’ve come up with though😕. Ridiculous. Fix it and it’ll be the best app ever.

More glitches all the time. They added in a new feature where you have to login every single time you go to the game. The game used to be annoying because people would always get kicked out mid game and have to rejoin but now you have to log back in every time and it kicks you out more frequently, I’m currently in the middle of the game that I’ve gotten kicked out of three times in a row at the same point when the AI offers to trade with me and have logged in and this last time the game is frozen and won’t go any further to prompt me to login. I hate this new login. It makes games so much chunkier and slower and there are more opportunities for it to glitch out and ruin a game. Some thing that’s always been annoying is people who are sore losers will hijack the game by exiting the gameplay but hanging out in the lobby and then the game is essentially stopped until they leave or you leave.

Great UI, Ridiculous AI!. I’ve gotta give credit for the design of the game - it’s amazing. But the AI is laughably flawed. I say “laughably” because I’ve already pushed through the confusion, denial, anger and fuming stages of playing the app. At this point I just laugh out loud when the AI players move through absurdly ridiculous scenarios to strip me of all my cards and roll anything but the numbers where I have settlements and cities (how many times can you roll only 3s, 11s, 7s and 12s in a roll!!) Oh, but then it does roll a good number, but, of course, only directly after it has placed the robber where you have a city/settlement on that number! And then it rolls it again just to add salt to the back stabbing wound!! Then it teases me by giving me a rainfall of good dice rolls before rolling a seven on my turn and depleting the supply. Wait, I’m not done! I’m in awe of the “ghost” knights - where the AI players suddenly jump all over the board using a string of knight cards that spontaneously appeared in their hands for free. And don’t get me started on the monopoly cards... aargh!!

Don't download if you love your phone. Because you will be tempted to beat your phone with a hammer if you play this version. Yes, I've played countless games of catan with real humans and understand the drama that is catan. However, you will find that your ai opponents have a nearly unlimited supply of knight and monopoly cards and that possessing ownership of as many as 10 of the 12 numbers available in the range of possibilities may result in the other two numbers being rolled so exclusively that you go 4 rounds without receiving a single resource. You think you know how frustrating the robber can be? Just wait. In short, the programmers must have been slighted by their wages or resented the project somehow. They are quietly chuckling everyday in the knowledge that they are torturing the minds of catan faithful worldwide. To be fair, it is a beautiful interface. Very user friendly and completely addictive. Nonetheless, I happily flushed the money I spent on this game down the toilet and deleted it from my phone. Life is good again.

Great Game - Unfair AI. Like many reviews, I could spell out the flaws that make this game less fun. The board game is a blast and this one is very close to great. The only problem is the users need the company to read this feedback and to make the probabilities more fair. The dice for AI players tend to roll the live players number very frequently when the Robber is blocking that spot. The ganging up of AI players against the human is extremely evident. There are several flaws that have been mentioned throughout these reviews. I plan to keep playing but hope these can get fixed to improve the game. It could be a 5 star game I shout about front the mountaintops but for these little programming needs. How about an updated version to address some of them? Maybe even a few more AI players with varying ratings in each category. I bought this for each of my family members phones and there need to be a few more novice-like players for when people are learning.

Very good!. So I just bought this after reading up on family board games and then watching videos. I was interested. So I bought the mobile version. I was excited. Played the tutorial. But I ran into a problem. Probably didn’t see it because the color of the mark on the map, or it wasn’t there, but there was nothing marked to progress through the tutorial. So I had to exit and close the game. Not a problem. Loaded it up, mentioned it was marked on the map where to build, saw it marked. Maybe I got what it was saying and looked. Great. After I touched the green check mark, the camera decided to move by its self to the left—zoom in and lock there. I can move a bit of the camera and zoom not completely out. Oh now what!? Closed and exit the game again and loaded it up. So far so good. No problems yet after those two issues. These problems are probably mentioned already. I would be happy if they were looked into and fixed. Please. This isn’t the free version. So I’d be happy if the issues are fixed because $4.99 may not a lot, but it is supporting the game and the developers/publishers. I’ll definitely rate it five stars once they’re fixed. Forgot to add. I think it would be cute if there was sole animation. Like the water moving, and the tide splashing against the rocks.

AI > Laws of Probability. I once played a game where I placed my first two settlements near 8’s. Yes, both settlements would get a harvest if anyone rolled an eight. First roll, 8. I got wood and a brick…never to see another 8 rolled again! 5’s we’re most common and 9’s. So not out of the realm of reality, but one 8? Just one? And the AI seemed to have an unlimited amount of Knight cards! Just decimated my chance to win…and yet, (I was playing the oasis map) AI makes foolish trades. I got into the clouds and placed my settlement and cities on the “multiverse” land hex. It was a nine and I had three cities around it. I won because of longest road, cities (I did have a settlement near a rock 6 later in the game) and victory cards found in the clouds. I only play oasis now because of the AI’s knack of rolling 7’s and having all the knight cards, and to get some space to get all the numbers so no matter what the roll is, I get something.

Good implementation, OK AI. This is a good implementation of the classic board game. So far I’ve only played on the included base levels and haven’t seen any annoying ads or upgrade offers that plague many games these days. Thinking about other people’s comments - the included AI players do tend to buy a lot of resource cards as opposed to many human’s road/settlement focused early games, and that can take some getting used to. Also, the “friendly robber mode” setting can make it feel like you’re getting hammered by the robber if you’re the first/only player over two points early on. I often purposely avoid getting any (non-victory card) points until several of the the AI players do, focusing on roads (4 or fewer on a row) and cards - then add settlements in later so the robber is spread more evenly. Anyway, this is a pretty good implementation of the classic and well worth the price.

Computer cheats or game is buggy. I left a one star review a month ago and it didn't get posted so consider this 2 one star reviews. This review is completely unrelated to my last review. This game is either cheap or buggy. I've had my resource cards disappear out of nowhere. Didn't trade them, didn't get robbed. They literally just leave my hand. The computer players work together against you. AI knows what cards you have. They only offer you resources you already have, never offer anything you need. AI almost never accepts offers for resources that you need in exchange for resources they have in abundance. AI almost exclusively puts the robber on your tiles. Every card they steal from you is a resource you need for your next turn. Any card you rob from them is a resource you either don't need or have a lot of already. Anytime they place the robber on your tile, that number becomes the "hot" number to roll. As soon as the robber is moved elsewhere, that number goes cold and doesn't get rolled. I paid $5 for the app and I'm deleting it for my own sanity. The $5 doesn't matter at this point. Even if you have the patience of a saint, this game will severely test your patience to the max. Good luck if you do decide to play it.

Dice rolls are not random. Games start to get frustrating because you can tell that dice rolls are not being rolled randomly, but almost in favor of the AI. I have played countless games where I have an 8 or 6 spot and they HARDLY get rolled in comparison to some other slots like 4 or 5. I was 15 minutes into one game and 8 was rolled zero times whereas 5 had already been rolled 7 times and 12 had even been rolled 2 times. It’s clearly favored towards the AI and the only way I seem to win is by trying to neighbor their rolls and spread them out so when they get a decent roll I do too. With resources I also find that in most games I will get absolutely robbed for every resource I have and then the AIs have over 10 resources to play from. That’s also due to the unfair rolls and also that the AI tends to “gang up” on the CPU. I might not have the most VP but then I have one resource and a good spot so the AI says I’m gonna wreck this one spot and take that one resource even though someone else is ahead and has 10 resources.

Great UI but too much bs. I love how seamless this app is when transitioning from the board game to the app. It's so much easier than you think it would be and it is a really good use of spare time. Quite frankly, for the catan enthusiast, it's great, especially when you fork out the 12 bucks for the whole package. After playing countless games against the AI Bots in this game, my only beef is that the game clearly tries to equalize itself too much. I can't tell you how many times I've been ahead by 5 victory points only to have the game roll a ridiculous amount of 7s and other nonsensical numbers just to try to equalize things. Just got done playing a game where I was a staggering 6 victory points ahead with one to go for the win, only to have the app roll an ungodly amount of 7s, 3s, 11s, and 2s until the computer finally caught up to 'give me a run for my money'. It's honestly frustrating and blatantly obvious the game tries to equalize. Game should've been over in two turns, stretched the game out to 12 more turns

Definitely not as bad as people say. I’ve spent the past year playing this game. I’ve read more than a few reviews about how the game is unfair or it’s impossible to win, etc and that’s not true. Sometimes the game players do make weird decisions but they each have a specific way they’re programmed to play, and just like playing with real people, you can figure out their style and use it against them. When I first started playing the game I think it was about 20 games or more before I finally won. Now? I win a good 75% of the games. So the game isn’t impossible, it just requires critical thinking and strategy planning, learning your opponents weaknesses, etc. My only complaint is that the latest update made all of the lettering insanely small. Luckily I have an iphone 8 Plus or I’d never be able to see it. So here’s hoping that gets fixed asap. Other than that, I think this game is fantastic because easy games get boring quickly and I’ve played this game for hours on end for a year and still love it.

Fun, yet frustrating.... I like the game Catan, yet I rarely am able to bring it to the tabletop at home. I'm lucky to play it a few times a year. So, I got the app version in order to be able to play it more frequently. It was good fun for about a month. After that it was just irritating. Why? The dice rolling generator is anything but random. The game seems to have a built-in "catch up" feature for the AI players. If I get out to a strong lead, I will get hammered by the computer with the die rolls. Seriously! There have been games where I have gone as many as four rounds without being able to do a thing because the dice have come up 7's four times in a roll, causing me to lose half my cards and then having the AI players continually placing the Thief on my hexes. Meanwhile, the dice roll 11 or 12 again and again so the hexes they control keep on producing. Ridiculous! I had to delete it from my phone or risk throwing it. The game needs a true number randomized to be truly good.

Fun, almost like the table top. I read the reviews before purchasing the game, almost didn’t buy, but glad I did. Maybe the AI has been updated, because I haven’t experienced unfair play. I have played a custom game 10 times now (hardest difficulty), classic game mode, and won 8 times. The AI plays mostly how I would, doesn’t trade with me when it will give me the win, and places the robber on the person who is winning, or has a needed resource. The roll data at the end of each game is fairly accurate with the probabilities. Seems fair to me. Aside from all that, I haven’t payed for the rest to unlock everything, and haven’t played anything but classic mode with the AI. It’s not quite like playing live with friends at the table, but still fun.

Ok but very irritating (more so than a real life game of settlers). The AI loves to hammer you with the robber even if you don’t have the lead. I get in a game you can pick on someone who’s building towards what you want or just got the resource you need but a lot of the time it’s who has the lead. The AI doesn’t care even if you're down 3 points and on the other side of the map you’ll still get slammed with the robber 3/4 the time. Also there is only 2 monopoly cards in the deck and I’ve played standard games where they have been used 3 times. I get in the different scenarios that rules and limits vary (although none note more monopoly cards) so I won’t pick on how in those games, but I’ve seen as many as 4 used in a game. Overall this app allows me to play my favorite game whenever and wherever but it does need some tweaks. Originally gave it 3 stars but after playing the “scenarios” I had to drop it to 1. Literally every game if you get 2 or more points ahead it will constantly roll the 2 numbers you don’t have and you’ll get hit by the robber with every 7 rolled and knight played by the AI players. Even after you lose the lead and if you have one card when every one else has multiple you’ll get hit and the AI will steal your one card.

Good game, frustrating AI. As other reviewers have said, the game is good...but the AI and scripting are frustrating to the point that it ruins the game play. I thought it was just me being a sore looser, but the post game stats show otherwise. Put your settlements on an 8 - watch as the 8 becomes one of the least rolled numbers. Get ahead by 5, watch as the others miraculously come from behind to win. Get one point from victory and watch as the other players store up 12+ cards for several turns without anyone rolling a 7 so they can catch up. The work around is that you have to match up your settlements with that of the computer players. Also, you have to hold off on getting points so you aren’t too far ahead (leave breaks in your longest road, hold knight cards, etc). I don’t know why developers think this makes it better. I would not recommend this game based on my experience.

Decent but.... This is a decent game (I’m playing free version), but every few games the AI will hammer you regardless if the other AI player is sitting at one VP from victory and you’re down 2+ points and have no resource cards, robber will still be played on you. I would have rated this as a 3 star game, however the recent update for iPhone X devices made the game glitchy. Choosing resources for Monopoly cards or trading, the selected resource will get stuck halfway between up/down, the resources and several options are at the very bottom of the screen now so when making a selection I invariably close the game and have to reopen it, and the text and graphics are much smaller (presumably to fit on the smaller screen, but there was no problem before the update). If they can fix this recent update then I would say it could get back to a mediocre 3 star rating. If they could fix the AI to be realistic and less “Kill All Humans,” it could easily be a 4-5 star app (just playing free, so I can’t speak to scenarios or anything else exclusive to the paid version).

Stupid AI and breaks Catan rules.. There are several rules that this app breaks. Mostly concerning knights. There are random trades between the AIs that you can’t see. Many that no real player would do because it causes a win. They work together to make sure you don’t win. The numbers rolled cannot possibly be random. It will not roll what you need while over rolling their numbers. They put the robber on only you, never on each other. The barbarian is rolled WAY more than I’m real life. It’s crazy. I’ve lost cities in almost every game but not until the AI is covered and won’t lose theirs. Walls don’t save you like they’re supposed to. You lose them anyway. Another rule break. 7s are rarely rolled when they are holding too many cards but more than half the time when you are. That means you lose card constantly while waiting for your number to come up or while needing something they have a robber on. It’s as if the devs will not allow you to win. It’s complete crap. I love a challenge but you have made it almost impossible to beat and that’s not cool. You took every bit of fun out of an app that I paid for. Not ok.

Robber cannot be moved with out crashing the game!. I am very disappointed! Call me a fool and a glutton for punishment! First I purchased Catan HD, thinking it was the newest and would be the best Catan game. Wrong, as the robber would freeze the game if I put it in the obvious advantageous place for me. Frustrated, I purchased Catan Classic, thinking it would be different. Wrong! It also crashes, where the selection to go ahead with the game disappears when you move the robber to the most advantageous place. You have to cancel out of the game completely, and restart, saying you want to continue... but the same thing will happen if you try to move the robber in the most advantages spot again. Yes, you may be able to move it to a location that doesn’t help you, and still continue the game, but if you are hoping to win, you are at a distinct disadvantage. Unless this flaw is repaired, I definitely do not recommend this game. Today is May 8, 2020. If there is an update after today, you may want to try it. Otherwise, choose another game to download.

I want my money back!!!. This is my second review by this app is so horrible. I just quit a game by it was skipping my turn and saying I do not have sufficient resources to buy a dev card or a settlement when I had the cards. So my only option is to pass the roll and then someone rolls a 7 and I lose half the cards it just said that I did not have! Then someone rolled wheat that I had a city on and it showed the two wheat coming my way but they never registered as my wheat. It gave me two dev cards when I bought only one and then I was never able to play either of them! How can such a popular game be so poorly created online? Not user friendly and crashes often. Create a separate league for the common quitters who leave you with the AI to play. How do you get it to stop zooming in on every play! Such a frustrating game to play online. Also, lots of bugs. It would not let me build a settlement for no reason. I had the roads and the cards but it said I didn’t have the cards. Ugh. I had to wait until my next turn to play the same cards.

Terrible design and layout. DO NOT PAY FOR THIS GAME. Game is not worth $5 by any stretch of anyones imagination. Terrible layout. 40% of the game screen is water/unused surface, but for some reason they lay the ridiculous emojis over ur opponents running score. The game selection menu is junk. Worse than junk. Hot, sweaty, junky junk. If someone does not accept to join game, all players are reshuffled per each not acceptance and have to accept each time a new player even enters the screen. Makes no sense. Worst part is people not playing. There is apparently no time limit on turns, which is obnoxious, and when someone quits mid game, instead of just switching over to AI player seamlessly, all players are logged out to menu screen and have to re-accept playing a game that they are already playing. The game freezes constantly. Like 60% of the time. It’s like the have one server. You are likely to complete about 20% of games started because either the game freezes, someone else quits mid game and it just idles endlessly, or you quit yourself out of frustration. Whoever designed this game should have an immediate reduction in pay, or at minimum should have to spend the months of June-August scrubbing the Oakland Coliseum mens room latrines….. if u have never been there, it is a community urinal…… sooooo….. u know…… gross…… just like this game layout and functions. Yuck. THIS GAME IS FRIGGIN GARBAGE!!! I want my money back.

Doesn’t fit Iphone 11. Fantastic game that I have been playing for years on my old iPhones but it’s unplayable on iPhone 11. Either the dice are cut off or the menu button.

Great Game but buggy. Great game when it works, online is super slow and crashes frequently. Have been playing the board game for a long time and this is true to that. The AI is very biased and there are many technical hiccups. Overall not a bad buy if you like the board game.

Great, BUT.. Loved the board game. Online is great fun, though when losing, people often quit game. Unplayable offline, AI cheats with rolls. I get it needs help against human players, but when the dice isn’t fair, it just becomes frustrating. Online worth it if you love catan.

Great game BUTTTTT. A great addictive game but have way too many crashes and when you play online it so often fails before the game finishes. You should be able to Bluetooth with someone in the same room and play a game offline..

AI bias but otherwise solid. Have played the board game extensively over the years and thought what a great chance to be able to play whenever I want either against the AI or other players. Haven't tried the online as much as I get connectivity issues but the AI is a bit of fun. The only downside is that I have often found after getting to 9 victory points that the AI gang up, seem to roll their numbers and 7's more often (placing the robber on your main square) and 1 AI runs you down even from 6 points back in no time. I've got to the point where it's just a joke and you quit. The only time this doesn't happen is with the non aggressive AI. They are the opposite in that they just give the game away and you walk all over them. Still I enjoy the maps and the challenges and there is more than enough fun to fill some time

Bugs!. Play this game frequently online with family. The app has THE most frustrating bugs. The game itself is great and fun, but it makes it extremely hard to play when it’s constantly freezing, crashing, skipping people ect. It happens to all of us with different devices. Please sort it out!

Great challenge with fun. Good game, prefer the board game but this is a great portable way of playing. The app seems to be a little biased with its dice rolls favouring the computer opponents but that provides a challenge.

No campaign?. Own this on iPad and have purchased all add ons. Not happy to have to pay for this version as well. Even more unhappy that the campaign mode is locked unless I make extra purchases. Surely the basic campaigns are free with the high purchase price?

Game shut downs when in Easy Mode. I played this game after recently downloading it in Medium difficulty mode, but as I’m new to it, switched it to Easy mode after getting beaten multiple times. Now, when I try to load a custom match, the game completely shuts down, even if I switch it back to Medium. Cannot play a single game with it, waste of $8.

Allow this game to be downloaded on iPad too!. I shouldn’t have to purchase this game twice just to be able to play it on both my phone and iPad. The UI needs updating too. It’s outdated and clunky which is hard to use compared to catan universe.

Jo. Love it! Great fun just like the board game is and get the chance to try upgrades before buying the board game Would like there to be an even harder version for more challenges

Robber algorithm. Playing against all AI opponents I note that the robber never gets put on any of my settlement hexes until I am leading the point score. This is a definite advantage to the human player and could be improved. Great game generally.

Love Catan!. This app is great to satisfy you Catan cravings and waste time! Worth the price to unlock more scenarios and a good challenge to become 'Lord of Catan'! I personally would love more scenarios and expansions but it's a good challenge anyway. Another good thing would be able to live chat with online games to be able to gloat over a good move or express annoyance when you're outplayed!

Glitchy and Rigged. Crashes often which to me should be instant refund until fixed. AI is a little controlling of circumstances but I guess it needs to in order to compete. Game play feels very formulated which is a shame. Everything else is great, could be a great product if crashes were fixed.

Fun but frustrating. It’s a good game but hard to beat the AI due to roll of the dice always going in favour of the AI, robber comes in que always seem to steal your resources as soon as you go over 7 cards or about upgrade, robber wreaks the game,AI takes all the development cards and the dice never goes your way. Maybe a few faults here that need to be fixed including crashes, this game might fustrate some 2stars

So convenient. It’s awesome to be able to play Catan on the app without having to wait for enough family or friends to play in RL. Fun to try the other game options. Online hasn’t worked well for me as it’s very slow and other players often quit before the game is done.

Great when working. Have managed to play one online game so far, incredible when it worked and I really enjoyed the game and experience. Went to play my second game and I’ve had it disconnect on me and shut down the app repeatedly for the past hour now and I’ve lost patience with it. Please fix or I’ll be requesting a refund

Constantly crashing!!. This game just constantly crashes. Money wasted. What’s so annoying is that it would be such a great game if my energy wasn’t burned from spending all my time trying to reconnect cause the app keeps crashes. Please please fix your game!! It’s unbearable to play with friends!!

Great game. I really enjoy this game. I haven’t played the board game so can’t compare but I also have a version on my pc and this version is far better than that.

Good, but updates required. Awesome game. Way better vibes than Catan Universe. -Too many crashes -Not enough interaction between players. It would be awesome if you could send messages and trash talk a bit. -should be a ranking system so that when people dropout, because things aren’t going their way, they should be penalised. -dice seem loaded as hell sometimes! Please keep us lords of Catan happy and throw an update our way every now and again. Cheers

Good but. Needs frequent updates!!!!! Too many crashes, players can deliberately manipulate game to their advantage by switching off their personal “wifi” it’s Annoying!!!! be better if you could choose "pace" as some puzzles require 'thinking time' & then all of a sudden game players can vote for you to be "kicked" from your game! Not impressive as this can happen even if you are winning!! Considering It's around $13 Aus then another $13 to unlock all other levels hopefully developer will look into this issue. Needs update for bugs! 21st October 2017! Update! Update!

Waste of money. Bought this game and it won’t even let me register. Even after trying 6 different emails I tried to make and usernames. Always says they’re “in use” even though I just made them. Waste of time and money. Don’t buy

Good but too easy. I play mainly a mix of seafarers and cities & knights and no matter which 3 AIs I pick I win 95% of the time Would love to have more of a challenge Also sad that I can’t play the other extensions that could be bought for the board game

Freezes whenever rubber moved. Would love this but freezes whenever rubber is moved hence unable to play development cards so almost impossible to have a fair chance of winning!

Would be good. An app that allows you to play a great game when ever you want but you need to creat a log in using your email and are required to give email verification. This only works if the verification email comes through. Given you can only use your email once the app is near useless if the system fails to do that. Couldn't find any way to get a second email either, disappointed 👎

Used to be great. Was an awesome game until the more recent update and now it often breaks your game midway, just doesn’t let you play or make any move as if it’s not your turn, but no CPU players do anything either. Restarting doesn’t fix it either.

Expensive and Need more. I have loved catan forever and was so excited when I found this. Swallowed the price and was initially happy with it. I only play AI as I find people online take things WAY to serious and reck the fun. In saying that I finished all of seafarers in a matter of days. I need more boards!!! Cities and nights is taking slightly longer as apparently only aggressive AI players are chosen and they seem to get the best progress cards for doing nothing...

Please update for iPhone notch!!!. I love using your app with my friends but it’s getting a bit annoying not being able to view the full screen due to iPhone notch. Seems really weird this hasn’t been addressed years ago as it’s not a new feature. Would very much appreciate a fix. Thank you

Could be a 5 star rating. Have played this game for many years. Recently upgraded to a iPhone 11 pro and it’s difficult to see the entire screen when playing cities and knights. I have to keep flipping my phone the other way around to see all my opponents info. The game needs to be slightly narrower to enable the whole screen to be viewed. This was not a problem on my old iPhone. Perhaps this can be fixed?!

Crashes. I’m enjoying the app, however I can’t get through a game without it crashing multiple times. It’s beyond frustrating and very disappointing for a paid app. I also find that if I’m winning there is an increase in me throwing a seven. So much so I can almost predict it, the roll of the dice should be 100% random. Please fix the bugs.

Password reset broken. The password reset and subsequent emails send me in a loop and won’t accept the new password. It also randomly turns into German text between forgot password screens. Support won’t help fix it, very frustrating and not what you would expect from a good app developer and company. AVOID.

Robber bug. About 95% the time when I get to move the robber both after a roll of 7 or knight card, the game freezes (offline play). And there was no way of getting out of the freeze but to start a new game. Very much inconvenient and making the game, well, pretty much unplayable. I do hope this bug gets fixed.

Well worth it. My favourite board game, well translated to app form. I'd love to see the seafarers/cities and knights rules applied to all scenarios (as an option) rather than only a handful. I agree that the AI seems a little lacking in strategy after a while, and unfortunately I've never gotten the online connection to work to play against real human brains instead!

Great translation of the board game. Love the translation of the board game to App form, the mechanics all work well and makes for a really enjoyable experience... I hope that the other expansions will be added down the line. Nice App guys!

AI and gameplay algorithm faulty at best, and way to intrusive.. No sure what changes were made but the new algorithm for the dice is majorly biased depending on previous win rate and standing in the game - you notice if multiple points ahead the others will get all the “luck” until they catch up etc. Ruined an otherwise fantastic (but dated with a few idiocies) app.

Great but could be improved. Great and very fun to play. Could be improved by having the option of having playing 3 player games

Great game but need serious updates. Catan is great game. However this app needs serious updates. It is a paid app but it’s UI and user experience is worse than the free app the Catan Universe. Most of all though, it needs serious updates on online game connection issues. The online match with other players is painful as it is too slow and often get bugs!

Game crashes constantly. Game crashes every 5-10 button selections. Impossible to get through a single game without restarting over and over, which negates any fun or positive features. Can live with no new game boards or expansion packs but the game has to be supported on current devices (iPhone12) and operating systems (iOS 16.5) as a bare minimum.

Highway Robbery. This is the worst purchase I have ever made in my entire life, bar none. I cannot fathom how they legally or ethically charge $8 for this abortion of an excuse for an iPhone game. You are doing the incredible game of Catan a disservice and should rethink your life choices for even considering doing this to people.

Good digital version of classic.. A good digital version of the classic board game. The various expansion packs allow further variations. This app is a great way for fans of Catan to pass some time.

I almost entirely love using this app. This is a fun way to play Catan, and I love that I can play as many games as I like whenever I like without having to wait 12 hours between games like in the other app. The only thing I don’t like about this app is I can’t zoom out in order to view the whole board at once. The screen gets stuck zoomed in and it’s really annoying not being able to see the game without having to pan around constantly to observe everything that’s happening in the game. Aside from that one quirk I think this is a fab way to play the game!

Could be better. I have loved playing this game but I am getting extremely frustrated as the game keeps crashing. Majority of the time it will take you back to the game but a lot of the time you completely lose your game, always seems when I’m close to winning too. Finding it quiet annoying, don’t know why I paid for the game when I can barely play it. Fix the crash issues and i would give it 5 stars for sure!

Good single and multiplayer both.. It is the gameplay as with the hugely successful game boards, but here you have access, on payment to a plethora of boards and playing styles via the sea expansion and the city's and Knights expansions. For people new to Catan the training is a must as the strategy needs it with the multiple rules in play. But once you learn, you are hooked. The single player gets compelling once you have all three. Enough to keep it competitive and engrossing. The multiplayer has enough of a community so you get a game at any time of the day within a minute to three up and away. The next update should have a few ux options when in this mode, but overall very well structured through out the multiplayer mode. The main thing with a game like this is a challenging atmosphere and no hiccups to interrupt the thinking and the fun. Catan delivers. 4.7/5 from me.

Can’t see edges of the screen on Iphone 12. This app is not yet optimised for new iphones with edge-to-edg displays. Important buttons and information are now missing (covered by a speaker/front camera :( used to work fine in my old iphone.

Ok but missing the family. Mechanics are great but doesn't beat the real thing playing with family

Great game. I’ve been playing this for years. Great version of Catan. My only complaint is the animations are too slow even on turbo mode.

Was so excited but so disappointed!!!. I was so excited to ply Catan again, as I haven’t played for a very long time, and so purchased the game (something I don’t do very often on my phone!). But imagine my annoyance that after paying for the app, I then have to buy something else to gain access to the campaign?! Not happy at all and I’d like a refund if this isn’t a glitch!

Screen resizing issue on my XR. It’s a good game, but since loading it onto my new phone, it continually shrinks to a quarter of the screen size. Super frustrating. Hopefully you guys can fix this bug.

Should be 5 star. Great game but connection issues and instability is inexcusable for a paid app with add-on purchases. UI is subpar and having to reconnect after every denied quickmatch is annoying. Please someone give this some update love. Could be a best seller.

One bug. This is to bring attention to a bug I’ve found on IOS 14 - if you place the robber on your turn the arrow on the side disappears and you need to force quit the game to keep playing, which doesn’t save the last few turns

Constant crashes on my iPhone. … I am going to ask for a refund.

Worst EI ever. Don’t get this game. It’s garbage. The EI is so bad and the random number roles are garbage. All game your numbers don’t get rolled and any game you’re doing ok the thief just rotates in your spaces. Learn to program dummies.

Latest update crashes frequently. Application crashes frequently after the latest update. Please fix this.

Great!. So much fun! And this coming from a Settlers addict 😀

Great Game, but unstable. Fun game of the classic. But it’s unstable and often crashes, without warning, I’m latest release.

Boring. 1. Looks like only 10% is unlocked for money you pay for the game. 2. Boring game process Doesn’t worth money they asking for this game

Waste of money. Campaign only available for a fee, you can play the exact same game for free by downloading catan universe instead. Wish I could get my $7 back.

Crashes and can’t start a game.. Won’t let me start a game without crashing

Not worth money.. People constantly leave mid-game and there’s no chat or turn timer so games can just end or get stuck at any point. Also the UI is sticky/buggy

Download and unable to play it just crashes. Can’t even play

Heronia. Un jeu super lfun on ne peux plus s en passé sauf la seule chose qu on aime pas c est quand les ordinateurs sont sur un chiffre c est toujours leurs chiffres qui sort mais on aime bien pareil

Not worth the money. The app crashes at least 20 times within 4 hours. Connection with server is also very bad.

doesn’t let me register. I paid for the game but I couldn’t even play it. I used more than 5 emails and yet it doesn’t let me register. It says there’s already an account with my email. It doesn’t worth the money... DON’T BUY THE GAME

Bit late at the party. I like it but seem like it hasn’t been updated for many years. Crashes many time per game, both ipad pro and iphone 14 on ios17.

Fun but…. Fun game but crashes often. (iPhone 12).

Catan Crash. Hello developers, I saw a couple years ago you were working on a VR version. I would think to invest the players money in fixing the constant crashing issues when playing online with friends instead of VR…. that would be the better choice. Also sometimes the development cards will disappear and you have to logout of the game and hopefully still be able to log back in. We started just playing on the board instead, but is super convenient when you’re not living in the same town as the others to play online. We can live with the dice complaint that I see in other reviews, just want to play a game with friends online without it crashing after we’ve invested an hour into the scenario. Please please please, fix these issues

ALWAYS crashes. please update the app as it constantly crashes when playing

Great Game. As everyone knows, Catan is fantastic. The app does a good job but does tend to crash on me fairly often. At least it always picks up right where it left off. I play all the time… haha be warned!

New update doesn’t work with new iOS. The game crashes as soon as you hit confirm to play. Plss fix the issue or return the app money since the game doesn’t work on new iOS update at all.

Game is rigged. Dice roll is rigged to allow bots to catch up. The amount of 7 being rolled every game is astounding. In all my games 7 comes out 1/3. 7 also always comes out every time someone as more that 7 cards. Every single time.

The best Catan app :). Love this app, have been playing it for years. Nice graphics, beautiful music, lots of options to customize. It’s the 3rd or 4th Catan app I’ve tried and the one I keep coming back to, so I highly recommend it :) P.S. it’s funny how some people are so quick to complain about the dice rolling not being fair. I haven’t noticed that at all through the years I’ve played this app. Ever. Sometimes the dice just tends not to roll in your favour. It’s not supposed to. Sometimes you just don’t win. The exact same thing can happen during a the board game version with real people rolling the dice… you can have a game where you hardly ever roll any 6s or 8s, or roll a ton of 7s or even 2 and 12s. With real dice. It happens. It happens in the app too (because there’s an element of chance in any dice rolling game) If you aren’t winning any games just keep playing and you WILL get better. It’s not the dice, my friends! :)

Might be a bit pro AI. I would have to try the actual board game before being 100% if this is good or bad. So far I have only build 2 settlements and 3 roads max in every game in over 10 games. Every time things are looking good for a second, next dice throw well hello there’s a 7 and I’m down to no resources again😂 Also it don’t seem to matter what numbers one goes for, dices seem to go with the AI’s selection the majority of times. It was an enjoyable game for the first 10 times. But now it has become a tad bit boring and therefore deleted. Maybe the real board game is better I’ll have to test it out. Give it a try, you might have a more enjoyable time than me.

FCC. Not bad but it takes you out of the game

Glitches - can’t get through a game. This was really frustrating as it is glitching and freezing on me. Mostly if a robber was played. But also in tutorials at beginning. It just keeps on screen and now way to back out so I restart my phone.

Purchased full pack, still missing options. I was using the free version for a while. I recently upgraded for 12.99 to get access to the other versions. My opponents have options that I don’t. I can’t purchase development cards in the C&K games. And yes, I’ve restarted my device. My opponents have all sorts of great cards to play and when I go to purchase it’s just blank… no cards to buy. Also I am unable to register to be able to play online.

Good game ruined by crappy AI.. Nice distraction except for a useless artificial intelligence for the computer players. That alone would make the game a 1 star, however I would rate the game a minus 10 because of the ridiculous lack of random dice rolls the developers have used to compensate for the lack of AI to make the game “difficult”.

Complete Dogsh*t. Just bought the game and it crashes before I can even start a custom match. Just a steaming pile of garbage this app is….

Crashes. The app is fun but for the last few months it keeps crashing. Poor support.

Crashes. Love the game but crashes very often

So many bugs …. Crashing pretty much every time I play. It would be nice if this were updated more often than pre-pandemic.

Dice roles unrealistic. I love this game but the Dice roles are unrealistic. Continually rolling in favour of the opponents. At times I can’t get a resource. It seems the better you play the harder it is to win.

Yikes!!. Get ready to play the worst game of your life. Nothing like breaking a mirror under a ladder very roll. The roll chances are not realistic and as much as I like the game as a new player it’s not even close to the board game. I’m sure advanced players can manipulate the game but that’s not me.

Game crashes all the time. I really like playing this game but the App is constantly crashing. And now it won’t even load I keep getting an error code. Checked and it’s up to date. Ridiculous to pay for an app that doesn’t work!

Crashes. Games crashes all the time. Even after uninstall.

Crashes Constantly. I love Catan, and this version would be great if the app didn’t crash constantly. I can’t believe Apple would allow an app of such poor quality a spot in its store! Ridiculous! The developers should pay me given the trouble I’ve had!

Suspect rolls. Same comments as other re: unrealistic dice rolls. Apart from that - occasionally crashes. Fun game tho.

So so. 7’s rolled too often and game randomly shuts down at least 1-2 times per session

Bad game. Can’t believe this game is $7. I was hoping for easier controls. Game keeps crashing. I want my $7 back

Rigged AI. Rolls are not random. If you are doing well against the AI you will hit the worst run of bad luck ever. The AI isn’t programmed to be strong on harder settings, it just cheats by hitting the perfect numbers at the perfect times. Save your money.

Great game but .... This is an awesome game. I play against the computers because I don’t have time to dedicate to a live game. My only complaint is that the computer cheats when rolling. I have tried all the configurations but I will still get long runs of dice rolls of numbers I don’t have, with the probability being impossible.

IOS update issues?. Seems to crash a lot since the new update. Can you fix this?

Belle expérience. J’adore l’app. Les scénarios sont dynamique et j’aime la variété des options dont , avec l’ordinateur ou des scénarios du jeu. Seul problème est lorsque j’achète les extensions ça Lag et je n’y ai pas accès. Mais 8/10 pour le reste.

Out of date. Not compatible with new iOS. Game crashes within a minute of gameplay every try.

Won’t let me restore purchases!. I bought all of the expansions. When I went to restore my purchases, the game shuts down and crashes. Enjoy my money, I guess…

Unrealistic dice rolls. Great format. Would give 5 if the dice rolls were actually random. What’s the point in manipulating the algorithm, people just want to play the real game.

Catan. Love the game but in between games people leave and sometimes game freezes or dice keeps Only showing certain numbers. But I still I’ve the concept and how real it is! Make those types of changes will increase game consistency

?takingtoolong. Really like the app. Just a bummer there’s no way to report those that are taking too long on their turns. Messes with your stats without having a chance to even play the game 🙃

Rigged dice. When playing vs computer the dice are rigged and will always roll against you. Mine just rolled a 9 and 7 ten times in a row to prevent me from collecting

Crashing a lot. I haven't been able to play a full game because it just crashes all the time

Don't buy. Pretty much what every other comments said... frequent crashes, bullcrap dice rolls, and the robber just cycles your hexes. The better you play the more unrealistic and unprobably it gets, then it crashes. Don't waste your money

Love Catan. I love the board game Catan and have had the mobile game for years. I love the game and it’s a great way to play when you don’t have a lot of other people around that want to play. The AI can sometimes team up on you when you are ahead but I have never found that it has been insurmountable. Trading with AI characters is heavily favored towards the player but that can be an advantage if you keep getting hit with the robber due to the 8 knights the AI will likely have. Also can’t say enough good about the cities and knights and seafarers expansions on the app!

Great but.... Have played hundreds of games, generally love this all. But has a weird glitch. I play online with friends, usually one friend and an AI. If we’re playing one of the maps with a gold hex, and the AI builds there, the game freezes when the dice roll the gold hex and the AI has to choose a resource. Not every time but about 1/2. It just ends the game, I can’t figure out how to force it to go forward. If one person leaves the game, it will replace that person with a second AI player and then unfreeze and you can finish with two AI. But if you’re in the middle of a game with a friend it’s super frustrating. This has happened to us at least 4 times just in the last 2 days.

Keeps getting frozen. The Game takes a lot of Time just to find you a Player, Once the players are all in, it won’t just start you need to tap a green arrow..!! Many times even after tapping that green arrow it goes back and doesn’t select.. After all the waiting time when the game finally starts..!!!, there is no time limit to each player playing their turn. And sometimes out of nowhere it kicks you out of the game and gives an error message that you’ve been kicked out by the host..!! Like seriously..?! For no apparent reason..!! And if at all after all this when you continue to play the game (if you’re lucky enough) then the game gets frozen like 2-3 times and the app shuts down..!! Also while playing the “”Building-Cost-card”” is no where visible..!!

Glitchy. The app is ok, not terrible but not great. As far as user interface I think it’s about as good as it gets but the servers are glitchy so it can take forever to start a game. Also when I change my settings for some reason it never saves, the settings always revert back. The deck of development cards also seem off as well. In the real game you only have 2 monopoly cards in the deck, I’ve seen 3 played in the games also there’s only 5 victory points in the deck and I’ve seen player win with 5 victory point cards on more than one occasion, what’s the probability of that happening? So overall the downsides are minor but enough to deter from the experience that’s why it only gets 3 stars. Not bad but not great either

New version needed for iPhone. This may not be developer’s fault, but iPhone’s strange design where front facing camera eats away a small potion of the screen end up covering Catan’s control arrow or dice based on which way you are holding the phone. But it also tells me that the developers haven’t paid much attention to this game and no longer cares to make it good because this is a simple tweak and easily fixable. Also AI can be frustrating. Dice isn’t really random but fixed so that either they gang up on you or dice rolls for the numbers you don’t have. I’m sure this is to make the game harder, but it’s sad that programming is done this way to make it feel more like cheating rather than make the AI smarter with better strategies to make it challenging and fun.

Great App and True to the Real Thing. I have found this app to work great. I think it comes close to the real experience of playing your family at home. All these folks complaining of wanting to throw their phone and of being surprised with the "2" rolling too much must have never played the table-top version! Its Catan! If someone doesn't yell or throw things at some point in the game, then you are not playing it right! I do like the ability to pick the skill level of the AI opponents. I also like the speed at which you can finish a game. All in all, this app is totally worth the money!

Classic strategy game. This is a lovable game in itself. Even better now that it is on a platform instead of the kitchen table. It needs an update for online matches. There are pauses online, difficulty with the ready matchmaking button, and you need some sort of reminder or way to poke people on their turn. I think sometimes people just close the app on their phone and you don't find out the game is over until you've waited patiently for them to finish a turn that will never happen. I've made additional purchases in the store and when I've put almost $15 into it I want some updates for the crashes, game improvements, and better seamless online play.

Love this game but…. 1. More often than not, the number space that the thief is put on (yours) is exactly what the dice rolls every time on the next dice roll. 2. I have played the real Catan game hundreds of times, and I have NEVER seen two monopoly cards drawn in the same game. Not saying it isn’t possible but highly unlikely. 3. More often than not, the “person” (NPC) that robs you just happens to take the one card you have the most of, which lends it to the AI knows what you are holding, whereas in the real game you almost never know exactly what another player is holding. Been playing for years and still am. I just wish these things were different.

Annoyed with point counting. This is a great game, but I have one annoyance - when you get victory points from development cards they automatically show up in your point count on the screen, but they do not show for your opponents. So for all you know you could be in the lead with 8 or 9 points (including your dev card victory points) and then your opponent with less points suddenly wins with their dev card victory points. I know this is the nature of the game and dev cards can quickly change the tide, but I just wish there were more consistency with point counting - either include everyone’s victory points on the visible scores or don’t include anyone’s.

Great Game for Catan Lovers. I play alone against AI players and win regularly - almost too predictably in fact, as long as I’m able to secure the “money spaces” on the board in the beginning. I enjoy the game and find it more challenging if I switch up the games I’m playing & the AI players I’m up against. I find it’s pretty easy to suss out how to win if you always play the same game against the same players. I’ve never experienced any of the strange antics other reviews are mentioning (progress cards disappearing, weird trades happening between AI players, etc.).

Really fun. I just wish the friends system is a little better. I wish we could find the people we played after a game has finished. I also wish that was an audio on or off option before the game started. Right now you can't talk at all. Last but not least, if I click on quick game to play online but leave the room because I don't like the variant, please don't make me go back to the main menu. Send me back to the online menu. Also, can you give us another button in the waiting room to let other players now we're waiting for a fourth player Otherwise the game is super fun to play once you get enough people to play. Thanks!

Good game, nice challenge. Many reviews say it’s impossible to win. The game keeps stats of everything from resources gained to winning percentage. I win against the AI (max players) about 45% of the time. So a win is not guaranteed but there is enough challenge to keep it interesting. The robber will be used against the person with the lead, or against the next logical opponent when the leader is moving the robber. There are no more knights or monopoly cards than the real game: Only 25 development cards are available just like IRL. Four stars because there should be an option to turn off the dice/resource animation. Once there are cities it becomes pretty repetitive.

Not really a game. Games involve chance, and this AI is so horrible the game is not really enjoyable after a few plays. Robber is moved to your tile then miraculously that number is rolled a ridiculous number of times. Or, engine will roll five 5s in a row in order to avoid giving you resources. Just wait until you get 8 resources, you have like an 80/20 chance a seven will be rolled immediately after, meanwhile the bots can collect 12, 15, even 18 cards and hold them for round after round. Bots will never trade 5e resources you need, and seem to be able to buy Development cards at will, and know what is in your hand so play the monopoly card at just the right time to wipe you out. I love Catan the board game but this is awful. Given that Catan is the granddaddy of classic games with really good mechanics, I would have hoped this would have been built better, and truly involve the element of chance.

An infuriatingly bad “AI” makes solo games unplayable.. First, let me say that this is a great rendering of Catan as an app. If you’re playing online against other humans it’s really quite good. However, if you are attempting to play as a human against the AI just understand that you’re in the Hunger Games and the game is being manipulated in ways that make it nearly impossible to win. The computer opponents do not have advanced strategy or cunning, they have luck that defies probability and are probably gifted with development cards that they did not earn through resources. Oh, and they roll an insane percentage of sevens. Game play is tolerable until you get more victory points than the computer opponents. At that point, many of the times you earn resources, you will be stripped of them by a series of knights and sevens before you can use them. Additionally, many times while in the leading position and close to victory, I have been defeated by the AI claiming to have 3 or even 4 victory point cards. While possible statistically the probability is very low compared to the number of times I’ve seen it. The poor intelligence and high cheat factor of the AI makes this game unplayable, or certainly unenjoyable for me. I’d avoid it.

Rigged in CPUs’ favor. I’ve played the board game for as long as I can remember and I am sad to say that the mobile game pales in comparison. Cities and Knights is near impossible to win, the CPU always beats you to a metropolis even if they’re on an 11 and you in a nine. The roll favors the CPU and makes it impossible to expand when only they get any resources. Some luck can be found in the base game and seafarers, but it can be very frustrating when a CPU wins with 4 victory point cards despite there only being 5 in the deck. After playing the game for many hours I can only wonder how I keep losing when the CPU decides to start on 3’s and 12’s: the answer? The game is rigged from the start. The CPU is too poorly created to actually make good enough decisions so the game “gifts” them more resources.

Needs Multiple Enhancements. I love Catan, the game...but this online version needs help. First and most importantly to me, there should be a category for those that want to play three players or four players. It’s pretty silly that you can’t enter into a game that has the number of platers as a preset. The user interface is pretty bad...sometimes the game itself is slow, but you can’t tell if it’s the game or just slow players. Also, sometimes the game will just shut off, and you’ll be kicked out of the app. You have to go back in and click back into the game. That’s fine every now and again, but it happens way too frequently. If someone is losing and somehow the game gets timed out, these sore losers will just mot reconnect and block you from winning. Too many loose ends, c’mon developers...

Not too many problems. I think this game is great it was how I learned to play the board game and made it easy to start out because it did stuff for me a beginner wouldn’t know but the better I got at it the more the flaws started to show like the fact that the AI is laughable and annoying there odds are very good (get a seven almost every turn and put it on land I get resources from) but when they have a clear advantage because I’m not getting any wood they make stupid decisions like building roads where I had already cut them off so fun to play but if you got the money (and the friends) I recommend getting the board game

Needs updating. While I mostly tolerate the strange AI behavior (I mean really does the robber get rolled and knight cards get pulled that often when I’m just a point or two ahead??!!) but what’s really annoying me lately is that it’s not user friendly on iPhone 12. It doesn’t really consider the notch so buttons and relevant graphics get cut off. And it also doesn’t consider the iPhone screen touch directions. The amount of times I completely backed out of the app to the Home Screen while trying to adjust a trade is annoyingly high. Other than that I’ve had this game downloaded for YEARS and I still love it. 💙 wouldn’t write a review otherwise.

Easy to use, AI could be harder. Very easy to play the game with full functionality that doesn’t slow you down… there is an option to reduce time between rolls and the game controls are really nice. I’ve only played by myself because I never could get the online play to work. The computer players have varying skill levels but I wish they would make one with a tougher skill set. They have done some hardcore moves though—like trading a wheat then playing monopoly right after to get it back. Hoping for some more of that to really make it tough when you want it.

AI dice blatantly cheats. I’ve been playing this game for less than a week and I have had at least a dozen instances where the AI has been skewed to focus attacks only on the human player and not the other PC players. I’ve been a software engineer for 19 years and recognize the dice algorithms become weighted in certain situations and are not randomized. The AI purposefully continues to Knight against the human player - I just got out of a game where the PC players played Knight on me constantly 6 out of 8 instances and I was far behind them in victory points and resources. Improve the AI to use sound strategy rather than be lazy programmers and just de-randomize the dice algorithms...I’m not bothering to buy any expansion until I see an update

Good but could be great. Lets start with the things to improve: 1. There should be a chat feature. Or at least some pre-loaded phrases you can have display to your opponents like "Go already!" Or "Are you still there?" Or "Don't trade with him, he's got 8 points!" Things like that. 2. There should be a way to block players and friend players. 3. When someone is trading in resources, you can't really see whats going out and coming in. The screen should say "He traded 4 sheep for an Ore" since in real life games you'd see and know that. 4. Add more emoticons. There aren't quite enough to express all the emotions of a game. 5. Add a digital version of the resource reference card for newbies to remember whats needed for cities and settlements etc. 6. Make the 4 player colors totally distinct. Red Blue White Black would be best to tell colors apart on small screens Onto whats good: its a simple, easy to play format that is pretty addicting. They have an easy way to communicate desired trades. Games can move quick with focused players.

How lucky can the AI be?. As in all the other reviews, the AI reigns supreme with the luck. They amazingly ALWAYS roll for what they need, conveniently never roll for what you need, and I don’t think I have EVER played a regular board game where everyone gets roads, cities, ships AND development cards. Yet every game it happens. You WILL lose all your resources to 7 rolls every other roll, and a seemingly unlimited supply of knight and monopoly cards. Every. Single. Time. Even if you aren’t anywhere near the lead because your measly two settlements are either u def the robber or your numbers mysteriously never, EVER, get rolled. Sit with zero in your hand, and watch the robber still move over all your spaces. While it is sort of ok to play, after a few games, it’s just boring to loose over and over.

Why not fix the obvious problems?. You have hundreds of reviews telling you about the AI playing dozens of robber moves on the player in a row. I’ve had my entire hand emptied multiple times. It’s an obvious abuse of the rules. And they just happen to take the resource they needed and that you refused to trade them, every single time. I’ve literally had each AI play a knight card, move the robber from one of my blocks to the other, then magically roll a 7 and move it back to my other block. All of the AI did this back to back, and no, I wasn’t even in the lead at the time. It’s more than a little broken guys. Sure it’s still fun, and it’s still beatable, but when you have games like that it’s not fun anymore. Simple fix guys, quit ignore it.

Rigged to the point of not being fun. All of the other reviews are accurate. If you are ahead, the game will do everything possible to ensure you’re failure. The other players suddenly have an unending supply of knight cards and place them back and forth on your spaces, and the dice ALWAYS roll to whichever of your spots has the robber. Somehow, however, while also playing more knight cards than seem to be in the game, other computerized players also manage to have three victory points in the form of development cards. In nearly every game I’ll be ahead by 4-6 points, only to be held in a holding pattern where I can make no plays, followed by a mysterious and sudden victory by one of the other computerized opponents. This happens so often that I’ve lost interest in the game. For a pretty expensive game this is disappointing. Buyer beware.

Worth every penny!. I love catan and this game is incredible! After reading a few reviews about the AI I do agree they seem to get some advantages but you have every chance to win if you play smart and a tactical game. I’d assume people are most mad at spending so much time in a game and then losing. On a side note, I spent the extra money and got the upgrade version. I haven fully played everything yet but the upgrade is worth it. It introduces new things that you get in the board game with the upgrades. It’s SO hard as well at times. The game has its flaws, but it’s CATAN on your phone! Awesome, love it.

Used to be wonderful. This used to be my favorite app. I logged over 100 hours of gameplay, effortlessly. Then, something happened, I am not sure exactly what; maybe it was because I updated to the latest iOS, or maybe it was because I uninstalled and then reinstalled the app... but whatever the cause, this app is now so frustratingly buggy. Previously, I would experience no lag on my iPhone SE, but now the simple dice animation slows to a crawl, moving the map focus stutters, etc. And, worst of all, occasionally all of the settings in the game will reset to their defaults, such as the map terrain style, animations speed, opponent comments, and even the Player 1 name and avatar, as well as all the AI players. The app on the whole just feels unreliable and flimsy, now.

Surprisingly Buggy. Crashes constantly.. I love the game and when it works its great. It closes all the time. Constantly. sometimes 3-4 times in a row. Then there are weird bugs where the rules aren’t right. Some situations where you have correct number of knights, and maybe a metropolis and still lose a city. Or if the ai plays a diplomat card and removes your road they can place it as their road, which is incorrect, but wont let you do the same(which you shouldn’t but at least make it even!) They periodically have updates but never seem to address any of the real issues. I still play all the time as its a good time per game, so I can play when I have a little time but dont need to make a big commitment.

Enjoyable Game. We have been playing the board game for 25 years and love it! Our cards are worn and smell like popcorn, for some reason. Now we enjoy the board game with our grandchildren - and win occasionally. The App Game is a fun way to keep up skills, develop strategy, and just kill time. I do have games where the 7’s seem to come up many more times than other games. The options to choose my partners, a friendly robber, and mixing the resources add variety. Although I tend to choose the easiest options and partners, I still recommend the App version almost as much as the board game.

Great functionality; unfair AI and dice generation. The game and its features work remarkably well, and I have nothing but praises. Yet the entire experience is ruined by the fact that the moment you take any lead against the AIs, it's an all-out war against you with the dice included. There will literally be games when I am targeted on 12-15 straight "7"s until I have no cards left after having worked the entire game to place myself in the most favorable position that I could, and not a single dice roll will favor me for sometimes as much as 8 rolls. I like difficult completion, but this is quite clearly broken and unfair for the single player. However, if you don't take any lead, none of this happens; but again, the game is infuriating the moment that you do.

Necessary evil. If you love Catan, then it’s a must play - however there are so many bugs it’s infuriating. The app will close suddenly with no warning; the system often gives you some sort of update window that then requires you to reset all of your preferences; computer opponents can move the pirate even when their knight is nowhere near the blockade, they can also use diplomat cards that can turn a road to a ship route and vice versa (which human players cannot do), or play a card to rob you when you have the same amount of points as them; sometimes ship paths just stop working (you go to move a ship and can only move the second to last one not the last one); when you zoom in you cannot zoom back out again. Honestly if I didn’t love the game so much I’d just delete the app and move on.

Great game, terrible software. Catan on iOS is fantastic and addictive. Sadly, the implementation is horrific. The app/server hangs. Numerous bugs cause the game to lock up, presumably on the sever side. For instance, often when a human player leave that is replaced by a computer, if the computer have to choose a resource from a gold tile, it never does it and it just spends and spends and spends waiting waiting waiting. Another flaw is that somehow when you play the deserter card, sometimes there is no desertion the card simply disappears and the opponent keeps their night. No idea why this happens. Often, the client app will tell you that everyone is waiting for you, when it’s someone else’s turn and there’s no prom for you to do anything. The whole game hangs and all you can do is leave. Frankly, I’m shocked at the very poor execution. I’m also sad that I paid money for the expansion packs.

Inconvenient to play with friends. My friends and I downloaded this app because we love the board game and wanted to play even when we aren't together. Well apparently that's not what this is meant for. We thought this would be similar to other "with friends" games with the ability to play your turn on your convenience and then it would send a notification to the other person so that they can play their turn when they have a second. Well that doesn't work. If I leave the game it kicks me out. So we would have to be sitting around on our phone playing at the exact same time and not doing anything else until the game was over. That is just not convenient. Guess we won't be using this app after all.

Love the game when I'm losing. The moment you get a single victory point more than the other players; everything turns against you. Multiple 7's will get rolled against you. Knights cards will also be played against you. You won't be able to roll what you need no matter what that is unless the AI needs it too. It's almost impossible to get resources. I consider myself a veteran player. I adore the board game and understand the various strategies involved so I know I'm not just a terrible player. I've had games where I was at nine victories point and the AI would make a come from behind win when they had 4 or 5. I literally win 1/5or6 games. The only saving grace this game has is playing with other live people.

Terrible. I’ve been playing this game for some time now and the AI is TERRIBLE!!!!! The robber will spend 80% of the time on “human” player spots while the AI who may be winning due to multiple ridiculous handicaps has free reign with multiple houses on another AI spot. The dice will suddenly refuse to roll a seven for your benefit and the other AI’s will put the robber on human spots refusing to cover the AI spot that has multiple houses of the winning AI. Once the robber is on your spots the dice will roll your spot that is covered by the robber multiple times until the robber is removed then the dice will suddenly be incapable of rolling your spot that is no longer covered. The AI’s will trade with one another to boost one AI even though no human would trade with another player due to the position or circumstance the winning player may be in. The dice will “fatten up” your resources with random resources you don’t need while not your turn but then when your time comes around and the human player has 8 or more resources the dice will roll a 7 even though the AI who was able to clear 15-16 resources before did not have the same fate of a 7 being rolled. There are multiple other issues but I care not to waste any more time. All that to say, it’s beyond ridiculous, it’s down right maddening.

Issues. The '7' comes up way too many times. As others have pointed out, the computer teams up and just slams you with the Robber. Then they will just trade with each other what they need, and outright repeatedly reject any offers you make (it doesn't matter what you offer...I've tried!). It's infuriating! Sometimes I just stop playing because of it. If you want to just play a one-on-one with a friend online, this isn't possible. The game requires at least one computer player. I don't like that. If you play the board game version, this isn't required. It shouldn't be for this game either. Also there should be a story mode offered with the standard game. I even bought the expansion and was still told I needed to buy more in order to play them. Ridiculous. Finally, you this game should be playable on iMac. I can play it on my iPhone but the screen is small. It's hard to see what's going on in the game sometimes. I know it can be played on an iPad but I don't have one of those. So that would be a good update... Anyway, this game is a mixed bag. I have buyer's remorse and pretty much just play it as I should "get my money's worth out of it" kind of thing.

Been playing this for years. This has been a good game for years. I can tell you with lots of experience that the game doesn’t cheat. When you get good at it, you start to get disappointed that the AI isn’t smarter, but it is still good enough for some entertaining games. Some parts of it work really well, such as the trading interface. But other parts have some really annoying usability problems, such as not being able to see which items are getting traded by other players or having to click three or four pop-up windows in a row when it could have been done with one. With just a little more effort, the developers could make this a polished game, but it feels like they gave up just a little bit early.

Not worth it. I’m a huge fanatic of Settlers of Catan, the board game. Seeing the game available for my IPhone I was stoked! I would definitely be glad to fork over a couple of bucks to play this game against others in my free time. Unfortunately this game fell short of my expectations in many ways. First off, you have to pay so much extra just to play any of the expansions or anything other than the original map. I would be able to handle that if the game didn’t take 8 years to load. Not to mention it crashes every time someone leaves the match. Also if someone takes forever to make a play, your stuck there picking your boogers for about 10 minutes until they finish their turn. There should be some time constraint for each player, or at least don’t crash the game if they quit. Please don’t waste your money on this game. The quality isn’t even that good, and it’s a waste of your time.

Developers, come ON!. Listen to the reviews, and fix the app, guys. EDIT: I had originally made this review two stars, but have dropped it to one because there are so many negative reviews to which the developers do not bother to respond, and because the flaws mentioned over and over again are so frustrating. 1. It’s so obvious that the rolls are not random. A) I’ve never seen so many 2’s and 12’s roll as when I have settlements on every number except 2 and 12. B) If the AI only rolls 7’s and numbers I’m not on, and I only roll the number they have my robber on, FOR 11 TURNS IN A ROW, the rolls are not reflective of realistic statistics. C) I took a screenshot of a game in which we were 33 rolls in, and the number 8 (8!) had not come up once yet... what a coincidence that I was on both 8’s and neither AI player was on an 8. 2. Let’s not pretend your AI characters have different play styles when the only thing they all do is buy up every development card so that they hit the human player with a knight card at least once per round. 3. In the board game, you can see what resources your opponents have. There’s no reason for that not to be the case here, as well. Catan is a fun game. This app is a poor imitation of it. You have the technology. Make it enjoyable.

AI is Horrible!. The game itself is good. But the A.I. seems to target you over the other players in regards to the robber (almost as if it knows what resources you have) but also, I’ve noticed on multiple times the other players build and their resource number doesn’t change. I know this because I would end my turn knowing they only have 2 resources - they can’t build a settlement. But then when their turn comes around suddenly they have 5 resources and then it rolls and they get another 2 from the dice. It’s as if the AI is able to see what you have in your hand and plays against you. It’s very frustrating. I’ve learned to play against it though. For example, your placement of settlements needs to be placed on numbers that the AI is placed on. Forget about the hot numbers. The dice will land on numbers more frequented by the spaces heavily occupied by the AI.

Not terrible but not great. If you’re looking to play Catan this is great for casual play. However, there are some qualms that could be smoothed over. When playing AI, be prepared to constantly be hammered by the robber. Also, there is a lot of predictability in the dice. As soon as you get over 7 resource cards, you’ll be sure to see a 7 rolled. Also, if you use a knight card to remove the robber from you, expect the very next player to roll a 7. Online play has some bugs that need worked out. There is the same issue with the dice predictability (mainly with 7’s being rolled) and if a robber is placed on one of your settlements, that number will be rolled at least 3 times in a row. Also needs a better system for hurrying idle players or removing them from the game.

More $ to play it and bad NPC’s. Two HUGE problems. First you need to pay to play more of the game, big bummer. When I buy a game I like to be able to actually play it all, not have to fork out more cash. At that point just charge me the $50 you want out of me up front so I’m not unhappy. Secondly if, like me, you can’t find anyone who wants to play with you then you are stuck with the NPC’s who only gang up on you with the robber and knight cards (no matter the difficulty) and constantly take all your resources in each round. It makes me not want to play at all because nobody wants to play 1v3 against the computer, it’s far too unfair. P.S. Don’t do the random matchmaking online, it takes forever to get a lobby going and the players are either terrible and take forever or just up and leave right away.

It’s fine but..... The absurdity of the bots is unveiled and unparalleled. Initially as I would expand more rapidly than the bots (who seem to focus on development cards), I thought their systematic targeting of me was nothing more than strategy. But then the more I played and even when intentionally not acquiring victory points I realized it’s not even remotely strategy that inspires their decisions. Even while in last place I realized the bots didn’t care who was winning. They will target you no matter what. Even if you’re down by 4 victory points and the front runner is on the verge of winning, they don’t care. They WILL target you regardless. It’s infuriating because it doesn’t actually allow you to play the game as it’s meant to be played. A good app but clearly designed to target you no matter the situation.

Don’t waste your money. I love the board game, but the app is ridiculously flawed. The AI players will gang up on you with the robber and refuse to trade with you once you get 4 or more victory points. You’ll see them throw the robber on each other until you hit the 4 point threshold and then it’s always on you. You will take 20 rounds to get the roads built to a certain point and then before you can get the settlement done an AI player will get all the right rolls and built 5 roads and then the settlement where you want to go. Once you get to 8 victory points then an AI will hurry up and built a settlement and win with 4 victory point cards. It’s unbelievably frustrating and stupid, and it’s not worth your time/money. If you like the board game don’t waste your money on the app because it’s puts a negative light on the whole game itself.

Confusing - campaign. I purchased an expansion "The Islands" today, as it says that you must purchase an expansion pack in order to activate the campaign. It does not say which one, I would like a REFUND for the expansion pack because there as it it does not activate the campaign, and I can not use it to create new games. I enjoy the game, there are too many 7's and there is no way to see your online opponents stats, which leads to people leaving games if they don't get the tiles they want and then being stuck with random computer players. Lastly during set up - if the player before you takes a long time you can get kicked immediately if they say "x is taking a long time". I enjoy the game - but lack stats on game play and opponents and fleeing players makes it frustrating.

Potential, but needs serious improvement. Like most people who downloaded this app, I am a huge fan of the board game. I prefer to play against the AI, as it provides quick and easy set up. However, I cannot stand the fact that dice rolls stop being randomized when you build up any kind of lead. They clearly start to favor the AI. The AI will also gang up on you and continue to do so even when I have dropped to 3rd or 4th place. I feel like this would be an easy fix. It causes the gameplay to become so irritating I couldn't recommend this app to other Catan fans. I also feel that there should be an option for C&K to not role the pirate die for the first two rounds, as this is an optional rule in the original game. If any of the developers are reading this, I think these would be much appreciated changes.

Way too many 7s. Please fix the fact that 7s are literally the most commonly rolled number in the game. I have had times that 4-5 7s in a row are rolled. The computers only strategy is to buy devo cards and play them against the human player and they get victory points and the math does not add up when it says they win with 3 victory point cards. They are typically short by 2-3 points of an actual victory. That glitch needs to be fixed. The catch up feature is ridiculously crippling. Please make the game feel like you are actually playing a real game on a board game. The real percentages for a 7 to be rolled is 18% this game rolls more like 24% of the time with 7s. This is really disappointing because the design is so nice and flawless.

Love Catan but this app is disappointing. The entire premise of this type of game is to be able to play other players online. I have tried three different times now over a two year period to play this game but the developers have put almost zero real thought into what should have been the core of the online experience The servers are horrible. You can rarely make it through a whole game without somebody being kicked out or the game crashing entirely. When someone loses connection the entire game freezes and makes everyone wait for a few minutes. The ai players then come in and make horrible trades and ruin the game for all the human players There is no rating system, no good statistics about your record, no chat Overall while I’m a great fan of catan this game is not worth the money I shelled out to play. I okay risk and splendor online and the servers actually work and each person has about 60 seconds to take their turn or move on. This game takes forever to play I have now deleted it tonight for the third time. I keep coming back (since I paid 10 dollars) every few months and each time I am disappointed. I wish it were otherwise

Online play could be so much better. I’ve had this app for a few years now and have enjoyed playing against the computer. The live online play feature has so much potential but has suffered from the same annoying drawbacks for so long. This would easily be a five star app worth four times as much if online play fixed a few simple features: - make an online quick play game menu so the user can pick which game they’d like to join - or at least make it so you can return to the online interface if you don’t like the quick play game you’ve been assigned - include chat (with a mute option) - include vibrate alerts for turn and “taking too long”

There are WAAAAAAAAY too many bugs!. Here we go: 1. The online multiplayer service is broken and slow. 2. Sometimes the language switches to German. 3. The UI is broken and confusing. 4. Sometimes the AI’s freeze and that’s it. 5. Sometimes text boxes overlap and such with X’s and checks everywhere. 6. Sometimes when you place a road or house, it gets stuck and nothing fixes it. 7. Sometimes when you do stuff with the development cards it crashes or freezes. 8. The in-app purchases took a while to register to the app. 9. There are dozens of different unexpected exotic crashes and freezes that think of right now off the top of my head. 10. Sometimes if you have a pretty large amount of cards and you roll a 7, it crashes. 11. Most of the time when the AI has too many C&K cards and they have to give one up, it’s indecisive and it softlocks. 12. Sometimes reloading an old unfinished single-player game file crashes. 13. Sometimes the replacement AI’s when a player leaves don’t know what to do and either do nothing for the rest of the game or flat-out crash. 14. Sometimes certain C&K cards when played don’t do anything when they definitely should. 15. The Great Canal crashes all the time. It’s unplayable at this point. It’s hard to recommend friends this app to play with them when there are this many issues.

Well done and well supported. It is so wonderful to be able to play this addictive but LONG game (the board game seems to take 2-3+ hours to play) in a way that doesn’t take nearly as long (more like 30-45 minutes for one game). At one point there was a bug having to do with pirate ships, but the developers fixed it. I don’t mind bugs as long as they get fixed. Overall, this app is well-written, and I’ve enjoyed the add-ons. Looking forward to trying out the new 3D version of the game that the developers so generously grandfathered this app’s users into (after I conquer the knights and cities single player campaign).
